Distributor/ignitor malfunctioned, causing vehicle to stall.

The ignitor module failed which causes the car to stall at highway speeds.the engine does not work again until it has a couple of mintues to sit.but now it has failed for the last time because my engine would not turn back on until i got a whole new distrubitor.

The distributor went out without warning.it has been noted to fail on these engines as the recall for prior years.in addition, the transmission has a habit of failing.for more additional information and complaints, please go to www.probetalk.com.there are hundreds, possibly thousands of others who have complained about their distributors and transmissions failing at relatively low miles.

While slowing down and making turns engine dies; lost control of vehicle power; steering wheel locks up; no warning; intermittent problem.

All owners should have been notified of the distributor problems from past customers.

Vehicle stalls when vehicle is coming to a stop.i am unable to get the vehicle to idle without pressing the accelerator pedal. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer to fix this problem 4 times in the past several years, but the problem intermitently persists.the dealer has changed the iac valve, the distributor, the distributor cap, the plugs and plug wires, and now they want to change the iac valve for a 2nd time!by reviewing this database i see that many other probe owners are experiencing the exact same problem, but it does not appear that the dealer has a solution to fix it. Also, after talking to ford's customer assistance phone line, it does not appear as if ford is even willing to admit that there is a problem! it costs me at least $500 everytime i have to take the vehicle to the dealer so that they can attempt to "fix" this reoccurring problem and i am getting quite fed up with the entire situation!

The pro-lock system that is in my car is having to be remove because it is sparking. The item has been dis-continued. The dealers were not sure what i was talking about when i called them because they are not used anymore. One dealer said he has to do the

Vehicle stalls inmiddle of traffic or out of the driveway.the vehicle starts after parked for a while.the dealer could not find the cause.

This problem was with the ignition--same as the current 'recall'. I have the original distributor. I had to replace it at a cost of over $600. Several months later, the tsb was to replace the thick film ignition..... This happened at 53000 miles, well with.

The ignition went out on my car unexpectedly.checked myself for spark and confirmed there was none.a local shop repaired the distributor for over $400.a month later, in an unrelated incident, the automatic transmission went out and after 4 weeks, 2-3 rebuilds and $2300 later i was back on the road.i have heard and read of numerous fellow 1993-1997 ford probe owners reporting these failures time and again.

Ok, so a week and a half ago i went to start my car and it had trouble starting.when it did start the check engine light came on.i pulled the codes and got codes 3 and 4, which pertain to a faulty igniter.to explain my complaint, the form asked how many times it has failed and i wrote 12... 12 being the number of times roughly, that it has had trouble starting.i've heard this is a common problem in 1993 probes and i will have to replace it soon.thanks for your help

The car had to be towed 02/14/0 due to the the distributor system was replacedtotal $515.28 and the diagnosed and filtering stsem was replace at $161.00. The next incident was 03/03/00 where phil fitts spotted a plugged idle air valve that was replaced. Phil fitts. 3250 wilmington rd,new castle,pa 16105. I didn't mind the occurance on 03/03/00 but the one 2/14/00 was quoted as something that was rare on car for the whole distributor system to go. I had to be towed tice which i don't care about that i have insurance to covr that.when i broke down it was a cold evening and the car had just died and started to smoke to me that was alot of money to put in a car that you just purchased 2 months prior.i always like dealing with ford i hope someone could look into this for me i know that i bought the car used but,to me that is alot of money. Engine shuts off without warning.

At times, vehicle does not maintain the revolutions per minute needed to continue running, it stalls intermittently.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Vehicle shut down without warning at hwy speeds 65 mph plus. After waiting 2 to 3 minutes, vehicle would restart and go another 7 to 8 miles and the same problem would recur. Engine died again without warning at hiway speeds.

It was a hot day.we had been on the interstate for approx 10 minutes when the vehicle began to lose power. The rpm indicator dropped to zero by the time we made it to the side of the road. This alone was a miracle as we lost complete power within seconds. The mechanic diagnosed the proble as the distributor. We've just learned that the tfi (thick film module) is being questioned as faulty in some makes of fords.the complaints have sparked recall cries all over the country.we had a new distributor installed yesterday, august 13, 2001. It has the same tfi module mounted on the distributor that the previous faulty distributor had. So, are we riding in another time bomb for a possible accident where we could possibly sustain injury or even loss of life. I sure hope not.

While driving on a freeway at 60 mphrpmsstarted to drop.vehicle started to lose power and die.consumer felt this was very dangerous because they were on the highway.took to dealer, and they said it wasdistributor. Consumer replacedtfi module ,and replaced it with same part.there may be a defect indesign ofpart. Please provide any further information.

This is the second ignitor this car has had.this is a defect from ford.it is both dangerous and unacceptable to let ford get away with this injustice.probe owners all have had this problem it is a defect and should be fixed by ford motors.

Vehicle stalled in traffic without warning. Narrowly missed accident. Towed to dealership. Told it was a faulty distributor.

1993 ford probe gt stalled while driving without any warning.the stalls seems to occurrandomly.i stalled on hot days and cool days.this problem was primed to cause a serious accident.the main problem appeared to be in ignition coil.

Ignitor inside distributor failed multiple times. After a thermal reset i was able to restart the car whereupon it would run for a few minutes and quit again. It would do this until the length of time it would work became zero. Thankfully i had a replacement ready.

Vehicle failed to turn due to starter and ignition module design flaw.

Vehicle is stalling, specially when filling up for gas.tt

At 37000 miles the ignitor within the distributor failed, stalling the engine and stopping the car in traffic.at 37000 miles the throwout bearing in the clutch was also vibrating bad and needed replacement. Then the airbag monitor shorted out for some reason.

This has been a very, very, common problem among 1993 and 1994 owners of the probe gt.each fix is temperamental.recent ford recall in ca ordered by court. No safety defect listed.

I am just wondering when the new ones going to fail.its still in the same spot-right next to the hot engine.

Icm overheated several times this summer (always while on interstate), causes the car to shut off while at 65+mph, all power lost (brakers, steering, acceleration).car only at 37,000 miles during first failure.replaced icm/distributor (icm built inside distributor) with a non-oem part.

Short in ignition switch causes radio to stay on after car is turned off/key removed.

Started the engine, two minutes latersmoke started gushing from under the hood on the driver's side, turned the engine off and ten minutes later flames were in the dash leading out to the under hood of vehicle.

While driving, an electrical short in the wiring, caused the vehicle to catch on fire in the dash area.

The contact owns a 1993 ford probe.while driving 60 mph, the fuel control light illuminated and the vehicle shut off.the contact was occasionally able to restart the vehicle after two or three minutes.the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure and advised her to take the vehicle to a ford dealer for a proper diagnosis.as of november 16, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the failure mileage was 74,550 and current mileage was 75,000.

Valve cover gaskets failures.

Spark plug gasket below valve cover failed twice.*skd

Engine head gasket blew, causing the engine to overheat. Also, brakes and the steering failed.dealer indicated consumer needed a new head gasket.

This car with a failed air idle bypass valve is extremely dangerous and could result in a traffic injury or fatality.when this condition occurs you lose power steering, speed and engine control.this valve has had to be replaced two times before, and is again needing replacement at a cost of $700.00.i feel that this is an original factory defect, and should be replaced by the dealership with no cost.it is a hazard on the road.

Fuel pump inertia cut-off switch is designed to shut off the electric fuel pump in a rollover or serious accident. The cut of switch on my probe cut off the fuel pump (and therefore the engine) after hitting minor bumps. Dealer in spearfish, sd., installed new cut off switch on 10/9. It failed that afternoon. I installed a third switch i brought from rapid city, sd. Ford dealer and it failed twice. Vehicle quits running creating a hazardous situation particularly on roads with limited or no shoulder to pull over. To get vehicle running again i must pull over, open hatchback and press the reset button. A very hazardous situation is createdwhen vehicle quits running unexpectedly. Parking brake pivot pin siezed, which caused rear brake pads to remain in contact with brake rotor, which subsequently overheated. *et

Emergency brake rear caliper sticking in the open position, making emergency brakes inoperative.

Rear brake caliper freezes upon use of the emergency brake.

Release of hand brake on ford probe gt fails to disengage the rear brakes, rear wheel(s) now partially or completely locked, current method of correction involves manually releasing from underneath the car (always park downhill now).

Emergency brake will not release causing the rear calipers to overheat.

Faulty parking brake mechanism.

Parking brakes do not disengage. Extreme high heat ruined rear rotors, possible fire hazard.

When using the emergency brake, it may not release. The rear brake will start smoking after a few miles. The driver will repair the existing caliper by spraying oil on the part of the caliper where the emergency cable attaches to the pivot and spring, then working the hand lever until it becomes free.

Majority of 2nd generation probe owners have problem with emergency brake. Seizing of left rear brake calipermay cause emergency brakes to not operateduring emergency. The brake cable may break due to seized pivot pin in the caliper or can cause unbalanced braking since one side will not work. If emergency brakes are applied during some speed the unbalancing of rear brakes may cause the car to spin out into deadly crash.

Parking brake locked up twice. Ford didn't replace until car warranty expired.first lockup at 2/13/95, mileage 24,273, but no caliper replacement, just a lube and reposition.subsequent intermittent problems reported to dealer, but unreproducible at dealer.second caliper seizure on 2/4/97 at 52,941 miles.dealer replaced caliper at $400 cost to me.this was a chronic problem on 1993 and 1994 probes and mazda mx-6s that could lead to caliper seizures while driving.there should have been a recall.

Hand brake fails to release. Rear calipers siezerear calipers have been replaced 3 times- approximately every 43k miles.this appears to be a common problem i have seen it mentioned repeatedly at ford probe sites on the internet

1993 ford probe gt. Both rear brake calipers have each seized twice (both calipers were rebuilt by a dealer after the initial failures).when the failure occurs there is a burning brake smell, the rotor glows orange, the entire wheel gets extrememly hot, and the vehicle is destabilized towards oversteer.the brake pads are destroyed very quickly resulting in inoperative rear brakes (including the emergency brake).the brake rotor may also warp due to heat damage.it is difficult to immediately diagnose the failure correctly since it initially just seems like a loss of engine power.the problem is caused by a rubber seal (handbrake pivot-pin seal) that deteriorates prematurely allowing moisture and contamination to enter the caliper where is causes the needle bearings to corrode.it therefore only effects probe models with rear disc brakes (probe gt).ford revised the rear calipers on probe gt's manufactured after 5-jan-1995 to correct the defect although earlier models were never corrected.

Left rear caliper locked up on a cold morning.was not able to tell, drove for 1 mile, rotor heated up enough to turn cherry red, smoking very badly.this is very common problem, every '93 & '94 ford probe gt has this problem.i now have no parking brake which i should have.i am always hearing of problems from others on a probe faq site.you will be hearing from others on this problem.please make ford recall this very serious problem!

Both of the rear brake calipers are seizing up. This is dangerous, as it heats up the brake system, causing loss of breaking ability.

My wife purchased this used car in oct 1997. She had the rear disc brakes lock up while driving just after she took possession. The brakes have locked up on either side three additional times since she has driven it. It has been so bad tha t the rotor have cherry red and smoke pouring off the wheel. Whave had both calipers replaced and it continues to happen.my wife cannot drive this vehicle due to fear of being killed. I have had a complaint against northeast subaru in del.co. While driving at any speed, the right rear caliper will touch the disc and make a very loud screaching noise.even without using the brakes, the squealing appears.sometimes, using the brakes makes it momentarily stop, and sometimes it just makes it worse.ford dealership estimate for rebuilt calliper is $420, and $600 for a new one.i have heard about ford paying for some of these replacements, since it is design defect and was only solved by a redesigned calliper in 95+ models.koons dealership said they have never heard of anything like that and said it would be very expensive to replace.seeing as how it is a design defect, i don't think that i should have to pay $420-$600 to have it replaced.

Majority of 2nd generation probe owners have problem with emergency brake. Seizing of left rear brake calipermay cause emergency brakes to not operateduring emergency. I have read on the web that after so many miles that the rear abs calipers would wear out because of a design flaw.uk ford has aknowledged this flaw and has helped to replace the calipers on the probe.although my calipers are not yet locking up, many other us probe's have had the problem.the problem is caused by a quick deteriorating rubber seal on the rear caliper.once the seal is gone, water can cause the bearings to corrode causing a major brake failure.i would like to know if ford is responsible for this and why haven't us probe owners been notified of the problem since uk probe owners have.this is a serious problem because the brakes can possibly malfunction at any time.please send me any information that may help me solve my dilemna.thank you!

I learned just last night, from yahoo.com, that there is a recall for this problem on 1993 ford probes. I have contacted both my dealer and ford motor company by phone. The dealer says they have no knowledge of any such recall. Fmc says the recall applies to some 1993 probes, but not to mine as determined from my vin.

I've been having problems with the air conditioning compressor ever since i've owned my 1993 ford probe gt (v6-cylinder). I had 3 previous new and rebuilt compressors replaced.they only lasted between 1 and 2 years.each time costing me between $750 and $1100 for labor and to replace the compressor, o-ring, condenser, pull a vacuum, recharge the system, etc. I was informed by all of my ac repair guys that the problem was a small $10 valve on the compressor that had a limited 1-2 year life built-in to it by the ford manufacturer.ford calls this a known design flaw. This valve is not available to the public.evidently it'sonly available to authorized ford compressor rebuilders.ford has not taken any steps to fix this valve design flaw. So, when my compressor (valve) went out for the 4th time, i decided to try repairing it myself.this is what i did to repair my air conditioner myself for only a small fraction of the cost 1).i put in leak detector to verify that only the valve was leaking.it was.2).i sanded and cleaned the end of the defective valve.3).i put jb weld on the end of the valve to plug up the hole.4).i recharged the system with freon.that's it.4 easy steps and my air conditioner is blowing like gangbusters again for less than $50.you would think that ford compressor manufacturers would have fixed this valve by now, or maybe my air conditioner repair guys could have just plugged-up the hole in the valve with jb weld just like i did.but noooooooo!that would be to easy, and they wouldn't make a ton of money off me.it seems that they are all in it to make major bucks off of the supposed design flaw of a valve.

Cruise control failed to disengage when driver applied brakes, causing accident. *dsh

Hose clamp twisted and caused throttle to stick wide open caused engine to over rev and damaged engine, and could have caused a deadly accident if someone would have been in front of her or crossing in front of her at a stop light, if she would have been going faster a terrible accident could have occured.ford rep and local ford dealer say they can't do anything about it.many accidents may have happened or may occur with this vehicle and no one would know the cause of it execpt it was speeding, which could have been because of this problem and they didn't know it
