The contact owns a 1997 ford mustang. The contact stated that the steering wheel was cracked in the location of the horn. The failure caused the air bag to become exposed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the air bag would not deploy. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Consumer's son was driving and was involved in a front end collision, driver was killed in accident along with 1 other injury, front air bags did not experience deployment, consumer was told by an attorney that if air bags would have deployed, the driver may not have been killed.

The engine electronics went out; and the transmission has failed, and the passenger's side power window quite working.

Engine electronic control failed, causing vehicle to stall/stumble.

Used wrong key in ignition and it blew up the ignition system. Had key made at a local hardware store. After 4 weeks of ford promising assistance-they denied it. Trying a wrong key should not cause the module and transceiver to go bad. Followed recovery procedure in owners manual but car still would not start. This could be a potentially dangerous situation. Ford should recall or at very least put warning on ignition.

I have been having a problem with my 1997 ford mustang.this is a problem that has gotten progressively worse over the past few years.at first, when starting my car, the engine would turn over yet the car would immediately die.after a couple of attempts, the car would eventually start and stay started.now, when attempting to start my car, the engine turns over yet the car dies immediately.in most cases, the car does not start until it has been serviced.it has been taken to 3 service providers (including ford), who have been unable to duplicate and/or fix the problem.recently, ford replaced my air flow valve and sensor and just after picking the car up and driving it for about 30 minutes, i went into a store just to come out and find that my car won't start.once started the car always continues to run with no problem.please please help!

This car was bought with an extended warranty which never honored by the dealer.ford replaced (fired) the general manager of this dealership for dishonest practices.the car was purchased 5/97 with 13001 miles on it we picked up the extended warranty at time of purchase as per statement of general manager at the time. While driving, vehicle began to overheat, the engine cooling fan caught on fire and exploded. Consumer purchased a new cooling fan but the vehicle continues to overheat and smoke.the service manager explained that the bearings had seized and the vehicle was in need of a new engine.there is a recall on said part but this vehicle is not included.*jg

Engine is leaking radiator fluid, caused by a crack, heater is taking longer to get warm. Dealer stated that oil may cause engine to lock up.vehicle was diagnosed by the service techniciian at dealer.. Consumer stated radiator fluid is leaking from the front valve cover, which is also causing loss of heat.

Excessive rattling..rough idle..while engine is running..a slight "humming" can be heard over the dual exhaust..nothing major has happened as of yet.

With 60,000 miles on vehicle head gasket blewout, and had to be replaced atconsumers expense bydealership.then 4,000 miles later,timing gasket blewout which was covered under a manufacturer service program.then, with 68,000 miles onvehicle, it started vibratingwhile traveling at approximately 65 mph, and revved to over 6000 rpm. Consumer pulled to the side ofroad whereengine stopped working. 3.8 liter v6 engine had to be replaced by the dealership because of complete failure. Air conditioner would lose power after 45 minutes of operation, dealer stated an accumulater and orifice tube was needed.the connector to the cruise control system was cracked almost in half causing the cable to disengage from the cruise control system.

Antifreeze drips out from defective timing cover, and starts causing a burning smell, andsevere engine damage. Consumer feels fumes are dangerous.

Head gaskets blown causing the upper radiator hose to swell and rub the air conditioning compressor clutch.the hole in the hose caused all the coolant to leak out and causing a misfire in the engine.the head gaskets were blown on three of the six cylinders.the engine is a 3.8l v6 in a 1997 mustang.

Car had been running hot with anit-freeze in engine.car finally over heated and was taken to "bp gas station, 4499 roswell rd., atlanta ga 30342, 404/255-5341 or 404/252-8204 chuck allen manager "mr. Allen 1st said timing gasket failed & would cost $200 to fix.then when he removed timing cover found a major crack in it next to a bolt hole, "stress point"& that it would cost over $500 to fix now.also stated that this fairly new car with low miles should not be having this kind of problem and that it is more than likely a defect from manfacturer.car had been to "banner ford, 1665 scott blvd, decatur ga 30033, 404/633-4005, stephen c. Watson, sr." on 08/18/98 with 34,143 miles "car still under a 3y/36m warranty" for running hot & stalling in traffic.they replaced fule gage tank unit, but should have noticed oil & anti-freez dripping did nothing.10/24/98 car back to banner 36,440 miles "440 miles over warranty" - they gave an oil change & top off fluids again the fact that the car is dripping oil & anti-freeze has not been either noticed or just not mentioned & reported.two months later the engine finally gives out and the cars is "2,100 miles" over warranty & the dealership, tidwell, where purchased "svc manager" says i'm out of luck and with an attitude!could you please investigate or advise me, sincerely,.......shelby pease

While driving40 mph consumer noticed fluid leaking from underneath the vehicle.consumer was able to maintain control of vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection.mechanic determined that intakemanifold needed to be replaced due to a blowout.

The consumer tookvehicle into be inspected, andmechanic noticed that the plastic intake manifold cracked, causing fluid to leak onto the engine.

A common problem with 1987-1993 mustang gt's, when driving with the fog lights on, the wiring at the headlamp switch can not handle the power, and willmelt down causing a potential risk of fire.the problem is so common that aftermarket suppliers carry a plug and pigtail for these vehicles.here we have a 1997 mustang gt, while driving with the fog lights on the wiring at the headlamp switch overheated , melting the plug to the headlamp switch. Also i noticed burn residue on theswitch itself. Being aware of the prior problems with the older cars i knew to sut the fog lights off. This immediately turned the gauge cluster lights back on. I turned the headlamp switch off and the smoke began to clear.this is a very popular car with a problem that i am finding is far more common on the sn95 model mustang than thought. I was suprised that there was no other nhtsa complaint regarding the veh. I called and checked. My friends 1995 did the same thing with less than 36 thousand miles on it and ford repaired it at no cost. I have emailed web sites asking any other owners to file similar complaints with nhtsa and ford so that consumers can be notified. If not for any other reason than at least to have people notified not to use the fog lights until thier car can be inspected. It is a couple of screws and the removal of the headlamp knob to inspect the switch and the wiring.if you have any questions please call my friend bobby silva at 480-961-7433. He is also an owner and works for an insurance company. He was the one who told me what to do when my car started smoking and he knew of this problem. Cable linkagecame loose form the carborator and could have caused and accident.

Consumer noticed water leaking from vehicle.dealer statedplastic intake manifold had cracked, and needed to be replaced.

The intake manifold erupted and lost all coolant within 30 seconds while travelling the speed limit, uphill. A large cloud of coolant/mist enveloped the car from the engine compartment and blocked vision of the vehicle behind ours.

Ford experimented with a composite intake manifold.the intake manifold cracked and catastrophically failed due to this new material.ford knows about this problem and has a secret recall on it:01m02.other drivers have had accidents following this failure because the smoke gets so thick that it is impossible to see.there was so much smoke that i thought my car was on fire.this problem needs to be recalled by ford, and ford should pay the towing bills of those of us who have needlessly suffered this failure.

The rubber seal between the fuel filler pipe and the fuel tank split causing fuel to leak out onto the ground.this could cause a fire or an environmental spill.

Suspension-sway bar - the bolt for the sway bar has sheared off.i have no idea when this occurred except that i was stopped, turned to make a u-turn and heard a loud bang.after that i began to hear this noise hitting my car i thought it was a tire or jack in the trunk.i have found it to be the sway bar.gas leaking - when my car is ideling i start to get gas fumes filling my car, especially with the air conditioner on.i took it to ford last summer, they charged me $300 to fix but that has not worked.my car fills up with gas fumes and now that i am using the air conditioner again, its back at my attention because the fumes are very strong and i get sick, headaches, dizzy and lightheaded.

This car has a salvage title, which i later found was due to a trunk fire. I bought the car and later followed up on research about salvage titles finding out that the gas tank is in a bad location and that mustang's when hit on impact have a tendency to leak gasoline causing fires. I also have problems with my locks. Power lock don't work, and when i open the driver side door, i must keep the key in the the turned unlock position while pulling the handle up in orer to open the door.i have also had problems with the car in the rain. Going at very low speeds, most the time, from a complete stop, i have hydroplaned and have done a 360. The car isvery scary to drive in the rain.the ride is bumpy making all my cd's scratch. The car also lets off gas when the ac is on, causing me to become sleepy. All in all i find mustangs to be very unsafe vehicles and would never buy another.

1. Gas leakedbadly from the top of gas tank when the tank is full at the gasstation.. Tank can explode if there is any spark and subsequently the whole car.very dangerous suitation for the driver and any passenger in the car.may cause fire and major catastroph for all the surroundings.3. The jount between the fill line and the gas tank was leaking due to manufacturing defects.the jount was re-welded at the dealer shop and the leak stopped.

With parking brake in 1st and emergency brake up, car rolled into another car. I have had the car checked before at a ford service dealership center and was told it was fine.

Emergency brake slips regularly.had it adjusted once,but still slips.must keep car in gear to ensure it doesn't roll away.

Parking brake failed, causing damage to the left rear panel, spoiler, and bumper, consumer was not aware of recall 00v349, and paid for the repairs himself, causing the trade in value of the vehicle to go down.the vehicles tire tread appeared to be separating.nlm

I feel that the mounting bracket where the teeth on the hand/parking brake mesh is too thin. Thus the amount of friction caused by the weight of the fuel in the fuel tank sways enough to cause the parking brake to dislodge and become disengaged.

Parking brake does not always engage- manual cars were recalled but not automatics.

Automatic transmission is at times unable to shift out of park into a drive gear, this renders vehicle useless until the gear shift is moveable. Yes the brake pedal is depressed.

I pull into my garage to retreive something from on top of my washing machine.i put the car into park and began to exit the vehicle. The engine was still on at this time.i was about 3/4 out of the car standing with only my right foot still inside .when all of a sudden the car begin to back out by itself in reverse draging me with it about ten feet before i could free myself.i tried to get to the brake but the door of my car was tothe wall of the garage and the door took me with it.slamming me against my water softner garage springs and planter box outside of the garage. I was then able to free myself. The car continued down the driveway across the street into my neibhors yard before stopping.when i got to the car the gear was in reverse. I substained many cuts and bruises as a result of this incident. I contacted ford about this matter08-02-99 and they seem to not be intrested. All they said was um!! um!! really. A vibration occurs when upshifting.at first it occurred only at 43 mph; however, it now occurs around 30 mph as well and has become more pronouced particularly at the 43 mph shift point.the automatic transmission fluid is at normal full level and appears to be of normal color.we have also checked the universal joint bearings which are tight.

The transmission has been replaced because it pops out of gear when driving at 55 mph.the transmission also grinds when shifting and this causes the vehicle to slow down.

Transmission failed. Also rear end axle malfunctioned, causing vehicle to vibrate.

The transmission developed a leak while driving home one day.i estimate 1 quart of fluid was lost.i filled it up but major gear wear had already happened (could hear whine from then on).the leak could not be found and sealed itself.months later the main input shaft exploded while cruising at 40 mph rendering the transmission undrivable.the rear sway bar snapped on the right side while entering my driveway at low speed.i have been told both of these are common problems with this car but the close proximity after the warranty expired disturbs me.

After hearing a strange noise in the rear end of the vehicle while driving at speeds no more than 45 mph, the vehicle was taken to the dearlership where it was purchased.i was given an original estimate of $250., and the next day was told all the bearings in the rear-end including the axels had to be replaced, due to possible factory defect.i phoned ford motors the following day and was told i would hear something within a day or two.after picking up my vehicle, and paying the $1,474.82 for the repair, was told by ford a week or so later that i never should have paid for the repair until i had recieved disposition from ford motor company.however, the dealership would not release the vehicle until thte service was paid for, and i had a new job to report to on 9/23/98, in salem, nh.all the parts removed from the vehicle are located at my former residence in california.i have written various letters, and made many phone calls with no further assistance obtained in this matter.rear-axles should last more than 40,000 miles.

When clutch is hot, veh is hard to shift into second and third gear, i found two tsb's, dealership says they cannot find problem and i asked them about the tsb's, they said they new of none and said the fully researched it, no action was performed by dealership, learning my lesson about buying a ford,

Severe clutch pedal vibration and chatter...the clutch, throw out bearing and pressure plate have been replaced 3 times and the flywheel once...they also have replaced the entire clutch pedal assembly and cable...tomorrow i will take it in again and have a new "redesigned" throw out bearing installed...this is either a design flaw or a problem that should have already been rectified.

I purchased the ford mustang cobra during july, 1997, and currently have 16,850 miles.the driver's side seat belt has worn at the poing where it retracts into the floor such that it may break at any time, especially in the event of an accident.because of the wear location on this seatbelt, it would not normally be noticed by the driver.i was unaware of this unsafe belt until someone outside the car while the door was open, and while i had my seat belt fastened, pointed out this unsafe condition. Reported abs light continually on; abs control module ordered 09/04/1999 (cost to owner for part:$600+).part was received and to be installed 11/11/1999, however, new part was also defective and part was re-ordered.in checking, the technician found another problem with abs--part estimated at $800.received both parts and installed on 11/30/1999.$500 was applied under "warranty."owner still had to pay total of $900+ for parts and labor for a system (abs control module and abs hcu unit) that should not have failed in a car this new!also, if the part ordered the first time was also defective, it would seem that there could be a major problem with these parts at manufacturer's level.

Brake rotors replaced

Vehicle was taken to dealer for vibration when applying the brakes it was determined by the dealer that the rotors were warped. They advised that would on turn the rotors instead of replacing. Aprox. 7000 miles later the vibration returned.it was taken back to the dealer who advised that the vehicle was out of warranty by 7 days and that ford would not authorize repair. Suspension-sway bar - the bolt for the sway bar has sheared off.i have no idea when this occurred except that i was stopped, turned to make a u-turn and heard a loud bang.after that i began to hear this noise hitting my car i thought it was a tire or jack in the trunk.i have found it to be the sway bar.gas leaking - when my car is ideling i start to get gas fumes filling my car, especially with the air conditioner on.i took it to ford last summer, they charged me $300 to fix but that has not worked.my car fills up with gas fumes and now that i am using the air conditioner again, its back at my attention because the fumes are very strong and i get sick, headaches, dizzy and lightheaded.

Tires had to be replace at 13,000 miles.

This was rental car from hertz, thathad only 2000 miles at time of rental, on feb 2, 1997. I complained about the tires to hertz the first day of rental because the tires could barely drive when the ground was wet. I had an accident on march 9, 1997 and the police report reflects that the accident was due to damaged tires which were firestones. I wrote ford to report the tires in 1997 and 1998 to every board director with a response of to not write them again, still have copies. I wrote the vp of hertz and was told that i change the tires and accuse me of lying and ignoring the police report. I still have over $60,000 in medical bills and over $200, 000 in loss wages. My two daughters still suffer from back pain and another with her tongue that needed 8 stitiches and still has a hole in the tongue. I suffer with back pain. Ny no-fault only paid $37,000 toward medicine, doctor bills and loss wages. I loss everything and still suffering. Ford took a report and after giving them the vehicle id they confirm that the tires were firestone, i did this on 8/23/00. The police officer told me at the scene of the accident that if my children and myself had not been wearing seat belts at the time of the accident it would had been fatal. We hit a tree that totaled the car. I have color pictures of the tires and other documentation. Ford told me to contact firestone but the person i talked to there was not very cooperative, his name is tom salor at 1.800.465.1904 who was rude and gave me no help told me that i would not be helped by firestone. I have also sent a letter to cong. Billy tauzin about this and i am asking you to help put me touch with the person who can handle this complaint at firestone or ford or both because they were both neglient when i reported this problem in 1997 and 1998. Engine light keeps coming on.people with 97 mustangs are having problems all over the internet with there head gaskets cracking and engine lights coming on due to engine problems.mine only has 44,900 miles!do something.

When driving at any speed there is some knocking noise coming fromvehicle and vehicle is stalling. Also,engine check light keeps coming on.consumer can't determine the problem.

With 60,000 miles on vehicle head gasket blewout, and had to be replaced atconsumers expense bydealership.then 4,000 miles later,timing gasket blewout which was covered under a manufacturer service program.then, with 68,000 miles onvehicle, it started vibratingwhile traveling at approximately 65 mph, and revved to over 6000 rpm. Consumer pulled to the side ofroad whereengine stopped working. 3.8 liter v6 engine had to be replaced by the dealership because of complete failure. Air conditioner would lose power after 45 minutes of operation, dealer stated an accumulater and orifice tube was needed.the connector to the cruise control system was cracked almost in half causing the cable to disengage from the cruise control system.

There is not a safety issue, just a 2+ second delay in the acceleration when punched.
