96 mustang overheating due to cracked intake. Dealer will not fix unless i pay. There was once a recall that i was never aware of. I need my car fixed.

Check engine light will not go off even after service.

Engine cooling system constantly overheats from june to september in ordinary driving conditions with a/c on.

2 years after complete engine replacement, my mustang has blown another head gasket! i had to have my 96 ford mustang engine (v6) replaced because of a bad head gasket, and after replacing the engine, which cost me $3000.00 at the time, two years later am now looking at replacing another head gasket, in a newer engine, and looking at another $2000 in repairs. This is ridiculous. Something has to be done about extending the warranty to cover other models of ford vehicles beside 94-95.

1996 ford mustang replacement of the head gasket and radiator.***no answer required***. *mrwhile driving on a trecherous mountain road the head gasket failed and the radiator split.

The defective design of the engine coolant system which is not adequate for the size of the engine, caused the vehicle to overheat and stall unexpectedly, which couldresult ina crash.dealer will install a new coolant system at consumer's expense.

Plastic gasket not able to handle to with stand the pressure from the coolant system.most cars do not have plastic cylinder head.

I have had several reoccurring problems including 2 transmission failures.the transmission is an aod automatic, and it still doesn't shift correctly.if passing gear is engaged, then car's rpms shoot up and it shifts down to too low of a gear.i have replaced 2 water pumps that were leaking.i have replaced a sway bar that broke while driving down a flat road.there is a whinning sound that comes from either the pulleys or the crankshaft.in hot weather the car will act like it is running out of gas when accelerating even when the tank is full.the brakes are very poor even with new pads and the rotors resurfaced, they fade especially when braking must be done quickly or at higher speeds.there are also many rattles that come from various bady panels and the trunk when driving.

Engine overheats after manufacturer tsb kit installed, dealer kept car 1 mth afterward, no further updates, no repair, car still runs hot

Engine stalled and began smoking from under hood. All coolant lost from cooling system. Repair shop said there is a crack in the intake manifold made from plastic. Has repaired 3 in past 6 months. Ford dealer in the area keeps 15 of this expensive part in stock because it is an ongoing problem.

The intake manifold cracked & leaked/steamed under normal driving conditions. It had to be replaced at a cost of over $400. (parts & labor included). I have owned several cars & have never even heard of the intake manifold going out at this low mileage. I asked the dealer service mgr @ moyer ford in foley, al if this had been a problem & he said, "not on this model, the police cars have had some problems with it though". This isn't right & it makes me want to go back to another make of car that is more reliable.

I have a 1996 ford mustang lx. I was driving my car at night and i had it on cruise control and it blew up.i took care of my car and checked the engine and the antifreeze before i leave my house.i gave my car a 15 minute warm up period before i leave my house.the engine overheated and blew up due to faulty engine gasket. I have had to change the starter, the water pump(2x), radiator, and pistons because of that. I amvery mad at ford and i told them so in dearborn mi. Engine continues to stall and overheat have had 2 engines replaced because of this has seen dealership several times and there has been no resolution

Consumer states her auto is running hot, and she has taken the auto to 4 mechanics and each has said that this part has been on recall.she also states that her air condition and defroster does not work. She also said she was told that the 95 and 96 has been recalled for this problem. Ts

Flaw in the design of the engine cooling system causing vehicle to overheat and damage components.

Bob allen ford and the regional ford representative refused to fix the problem.the vehicle's cooling system was not upgraded to the specifications outlined in the service bulletins published by ford which acknowledged that there is a systemic problem in the cooling systems for 1996 mustang cobras.

Car has had serious braking, transmission and cooling problems since the date purchased.has been in the shop for these repairs more then 12 times.dealer & ford have said there is nothing wrong with this car.i have read 33 pages of comments of 1996 mustang owners who are experiencing the same serious defects that i have.please do something about this unsafe vehicle!

Engine idler pulley noise.

My ford mustang broke down on my way to frederick, md. In december of 2000. I had already taken it in to crystal ford for a recall on june 8, 2000. The recall program no. Was 99b29. They said they fixed the problem, which was a leakage of engine coolant at the head gasket. On my drive to frederick in december, the mustang began to overheat and proceed to break down promptly thereafter. The result of the overheating was a cracked engine due to a thrown rod. My vehicle was towed from frederick to laurel to my mechanic who informed me that the cracked engine was due to a engine coolant leakage. I then had my vehicle towed to crystal ford so there mechanics could look at it. The serviceperson, [xxx], called me to let me know the engine threw a rod which was due to an engine coolantleakage problem. I wrote letters to ford customer service and the service rep for the area and both denied any assistance to fix my vehicle. The damage done to my vehicle is definitely related to the recall and the engine coolant problem at the head gasket yet ford refuses to fix the vehicle. Please help me in anywayyou can with this problem. Thank you very much for your time and effort with this problem. My car's cooling system was draining fluids, and when i took it in to the dealership to get checked out, they told me the head gaskets as well as the front timing cover gasket needed to be replaced.it cost me $2500 for the repairs necessary.there are about 12 or 13 complaints of a similar nature for the same model and year (1996 ford mustang), but since this engine was installed on other models and years, who knows how many others have suffered from the same problem.

The mentioned gaskets failed on my car on 10-25-99 and on my husband's former 1996 mustang on 2-2-99.i also found a customer complaint in your files about the same problem (odi id# 544839 dated 2-15-99).i contacted the manufacturer when i realized i was having the same problem that my husband's car had, and was told ford would not offer me assistance with this problem because i am 12,000 miles out of warranty and do not have an extended warranty.i told them that was unacceptable and asked to speak to a supervisor.i am still waiting for their return call.even the dealer i took it to (holly ford-holly,michigan) said that this should not be happening to my car w/that mileage.i don't believe ford is going to address this issue without additional assistance from organizations such as yourself.i had to pay $489.00 to repair these defects, and i want a full refund.this is obviously amanufacturer defect.you have documentation from one customer with this problem, and i can provide you with documentation that this problem occurred with my mustang and my husband's mustang.hopefully you will be able to investigate further to prove this defect.

The first head gaskets blew at 40,000 miles and were replaced at my cost, and now, again, at 80,000 miles head gaskets are going bad. I have had multiple other problems with this vehicle since it's purchase, although this has been the most frustrating and costly. There is definately a problem here that needs to be addressed by ford. They have, thus far, turned a deaf ear to the problem. Thank you.

Consumer was unable to start vehicle. Dealerships mechanic determined thatthe problem pertained to anintake manifold leak. The problem was not resolved.vehicle originally lost power at 55 mph, vehicle didn't restart.vehicle was towed and found that one valve was leaking and head gasket was blown.vehicle has 100,000 miles on it.*la

Timing cover gasket failed, causing radiator fluid to leak, also caused antifreeze to leak into the engine compartment, however fluid leaking ino engine is not immediately noticeable from the outside, by the time leak was discovered, engine bearngs were severly worn.

Engine head broke, causing a leak.

My 1996 ford mustang head gastkets have gone out.my car has 87000 miles on it.i have heard that many 95 mustangs have had the same problem.i bought my car a year ago and i beleive that the problem was not completly fixed in the newer models.i was told that because my car is a 96 it was not covered by ford, they informed me that the new models have been fixed and that the head gastket failure was due to my "excesive wear" on my car.

Contacted dealership prior to failure about overheating problem and ford head gasket history, but they did nothing then and will not cover in warranty.

Dealer fixed "hidden recall" gasket after head gasket repair - front cover gasket - no charge for "hidden recall" gasket replacement.i wonder if the head gasket was really the problem or if they made a mistake, fixed the wrong thing and then fixed the right thing for free. )ak

Head gasket failure. Which may have caused other engine problems. I can't get another mechanic in town to touch it. So i have to take it to the ford dealer to get it repaired, at a cost of $1,400 or even a new engine.

They refuse to fix the problem even though other cars like mine have had similar problems with the head gaskets, they told me at the beginning of this mess that it would be covered and now they will not and want to charge me $1300 to repair.i believe th.

My wife bought a used 1996 ford mustang v-6 two years ago still under factory warranty.recently, the car began leaking a significant amount of oil.the ford dealership in crestview, florida (hub city ford) told us that the leak was from the timing chain cover and the manifold cover.they also said that the problem had been fixed under a recall at 30,000 miles.the problem, however, wasn't really fixed and we were informed that we would have to have this $600 service done every 30,000 miles and that ford had no plans to address this issue further.obviously, the recall was completely bogus, as the "fix" was merely temporary.any auto manufacturer that intentionally is aware that it's recall efforts failed is completely misguided.it is ludicrous that a major $600 service every 30,000 miles or less be acceptable.thank you for your time.

The engine cracked without warning.the dealer was notified.*nlm

I have contacted ford motor company's customer service department as well as my local ford dealer (charlie hillard ford-fort worth). They both tell me that the head gasket on a 1995 ford winstar has been recalled. This vehicle has virtually the same 3.8l v6 engine as my 1996 ford mustang. My local ford company tells me the only difference in the two engines is that one vehicle is front-wheel drive, and the other rear-wheel drive. The head gaskets should be manufactured the same on these two vehicles. However, ford tells me they cannot help me pay for this repair - which was a failure of the head gasket. Additionally, my mechanic says he and other mechanics he knows have seen the same problem frequently on ford mustangs and ford thunderbirds with this same 3.8l v6 engine.

Timing chain gasket leaks.

The rubber seals keeps popping off due to improper alignment of windows and doors.

Car overheated once and head gasket blown; odometer runs slow

After filling up the coolant container, somehowitbecame empty without any leaks visible. A technician mentioned a problem with the head gasket.

Blown head gasket, front seal, and cracked timing cover.ford did not cover head gasket repairs though this is a known problem.

Our family has three 1996 mustangs, one with a manual and two with automatic transmissions.we have had all three of them blow the head gasket on them, one at a year, one at three years, and one at four years.now, i have found out recently that ford offered a free replacement on the gaskets, for an extended 7 years, and would like to warn others that they are very likely to go out, and to let them know to "remind" the ford dealer about this issue.i paid to replace three of them, and feel that the ford dealer should have alerted me to the fact that they were under warranty, and therefore not charged me.

Engine failed twice.

While driving at normal speeds engine cuts off, causing a loss of power steering. Dealer has seen vehicle 4 times and still no solution.

Vechicle overheats resulting in the covergasket failing, causing fluid to leak into the engine compartment was not noticeable right away as had oil chage the week before and the mechanic did not notice any problems. This has caused us to replace all the gaskets costing us $600.00 then when drove one day vehicle suddenly began making gurgling noise and the temperture gauge went hot and now the whole engine needs to be replaced as the overheating had caused more problems than we first thought. We feel this is a serious problem with this ford product and would like to be reimbursed.

Before i puchased this car, i had a ford escort with the same problems with the o2 sensors. At that time it was my understanding that the parts and labor were covered under a federal warranty. This dealership says it's not.

Emmisions canister failed.

The contact owns a 1996 ford mustang. The contact stated that on june 4, 2010, while driving at 25 mph, the intake manifold cracked, the antifreeze spilled and he lost control of the vehicle. The contact had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were approximately 136,000.

Consumer was driving approximately 35 mph when suddenly the head gasket blew out.antifreeze started to pour out of the muffler.

The plastic intake? cracked ford recall repaired it. 1st dealership notified wayne morris ford in perry, ga would not help at all. 2nd dealership notified warner robins ford found the recall and repaired it a no charge. Also have problems with the front end and steering wheel vibrating/shaking at various speeds. I have replaced the rotors and brake pads which has helped a little. But can not get any answers or a resolution from any mechanic to date.

Consumer was complaining about plasticintake manifold. It just didn't stand up to the heat that was created when in use.consumer made several attempts to get this resolved. However, the consumer had notreceived any assistance from the manufacturer.

While driving the intake manifold blew. This problem was caused by antifreeze leaking from the intake manifold. Smoke started to accumulate inside the vehicle from the a/c vents. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

I have 96 mustang gt, at 21000 miles intake manifold cracked in the rear , ford replaced for free, now at 79000k the intake has cracked again in the front , the first time i was told it was a silent recall, before i go back to ford, again does ford have to fix it or do i?

I purchased a 96 mustang gt 4.6, in 1998 and in 2001 the plastic intake manifold cracked so i did some research into this problem and it turns out 90% of all 96 and 97 mustangs with the junk plastic intake manifold cracked. I call my local ford dealer and it costs 904.00 that is outrageous. Why was there never a recall and why do you charge such an un comprehendable ammount of money to replace it????

Engine front cover gasket issues.my 1996 v6-3.8l with approximately 57,000 miles required a new front gasket cover.this is the same issue owners of 1994-1995 models had and filed suit against ford for and won.

Consumer 1996 ford mustang intake manifold cracked and could not be repaired under warranty.the consumer felt that ford should cover the entire cost of repair plus the monies spent on borrowing vehicles to get to work.*sc

Door ajar buzzer defective.

Cd player inoperative.

I purchased a 1996 ford mustang from auto credit #3 in airway heights, washington. On 1/2/2011, i receive the vehicle and after three hours of driving, the driver side rear emergency brake locks up. This puts me into an uncontrolled 180 degree spin. On 1/3/2011, i take the vehicle to a les schwab tire center. I told the mechanic to check the brakes. After a few minutes of waiting, i am called into the work area, and i see the front passenger tire is clearly needing to be replaced, as it had the appearance of having been shredded. The same mechanic then tells me that both rear brakes must be replaced, as the emergency brake was frozen in the on position. While the work was being done, i managed to take a few pictures of the brake pads and rotors, but unfortunately, not of the tire in question.in addition, when i received the vehicle, the headlights would not stay lit, and would turn off and on at random. When icomplained to the business on 1/5/2011 around 3:00 pm, they said they could not take the vehicle back as i signed a contract. What i signed was a loan agreement. Even when i told them that the vehicle was received in these conditions, they still did nothing. Finally, i told them to take a look at the vehicle and to tell me what was wrong with it the next day, referring to 1/6/2011.

Brake lights never inspected. Went to take car back right away, lights were fixed but failure to do a thorough inspection resulted in not liscence plate.

Brake lights: the rear brake lights don't work while the brake pedal is depressed. There have been no aftermarket modifications to any part of the electrical system. The brake lights work only when the clutch pedal is lightly pressed and the brake pedal is depressed. This problem is currently being addressed by the dealer, but since the car is out of warranty, i have to pay for it. Seat belts: the front drivers side seat belt doesn't retract. The belt "hangs loosely" after it is the driver takes it off and requires "excessive" manual adjustment for a proper and safe fit. Mileage odometer: the mileage odometer doesn't work.i don't know how long it has been broken, but i noticed recently that it stops occasionally. After reviewing my driving paterns i believe that the odometer may be reporting more mileage than i have actually put on the car (but i have no absolute way to prove this).

Water leaks into tail light.

I have repair invoices and testament from repair facility that this is a common problem due to thin plastic walls ofintake manifold.

Lifetime recall on plastic intake manifold.

I have noticed that there has been many other listings reguarding the intake manifold.

Intake manifold failed due to plastic material used on original part - replacement part is made of aluminum and plastic - this indicates manufacturer knew about original design being faulty.

The plastic intake manifold ruptured under pressure from the coolant system. This failure occurred under normal weather conditions (85-degrees f), but thermostat was most likely still closed. Car had been started for approximately 2- to 3-minutes. Upon inspection of the crack, in the plastic manifold, the fissure appears near the injection mold 'seam'. The crack did not appear near the gasket surfaces. The crack was located on the bottom-center of the forward section of the manifold, running perpendicular to the driveshaft. The hairline crack is about 3/4-inch long. To replace the manifold, it cost me $520 in parts and labor. My mechanic felt that this crack was a manufacturer's defect, as a result of poor engineering/manufacture. My personal subjective analysis is that a plastic is inherently weak (cheap crap).

The intake manifold is cracked. Ford has recalled many of their 4.6l intake manifolds in their crown victorias, but not in the same engine in the mustang. They need to!! please help.

Appears that the intake manifold suffered a coolant leak. Is there a recall and what are the details.

Consumer took vehicle to auto center for a squeak behind tire, the problem was due to the intake manifold busting at a seam and had sprayed coolant everywhere, the intake manifold was made out of some kind of plastic, there was a recall and the prior owner had recall repairs complete, however recall component failed again, ford will not reimburse consumer for the faulty intake manifold.

Intake manifold cracked and lost all coolant on the highway.mechanic reported problem is not uncommon, but no recall issued.

Fuel line cracked, causing a fuel leakwhich resultedin a fire.this was determined by ford and the insurance investigator, and fordwas willing to pay for the vehicle.please provide further information.

While driving, noticed and smelled smoke; checked underhood, vehicle wasengulfed with flames, no warning, dealer determined fire caused by defective fuel line.

Fuel tank is defective.area of wetness seeping from top of tank on drivers side adjacent to exhaust tail pipe confirmed by dealer . The point of defect on top of tank is obscured from road hazards by it's close location to the underside of the auto frame, leaving the conclusion that the tank has a manufacturing defect and needs to be replaced. I do not feel this should be at my expense as the seepage and it's proximity to the hot exhaust is a serious safety hazard.

I will not buy a ford in the future and i tell everyone that asks me about my bad experience w/ this car and i tell them to not buy ford cars or trucks. Thank you for reading this.

I read about a recall for parking brakes for 1996 ford mustangs with manual. I have an automatic i bought online in january 2007 that has parking break issues it wont keep the car form moving. I had it towed one time and the tow truck driver said it was faulty. Is the recall still available for an automatic?

Transmisson needs to be overhauled(rebuilt) due to a malfunction internally through no fault of my own.

Transmission jumped out of second gear, causing vehicle to acccelerate/lose control.

While engine braking, engine stalls when downshifting. First had this problem at 1000 miles. Dealer has always claimed the engine is in fine operating condition.

Noisy transmission; also vehicle sverves when abs brakes are applied at high speed/ small oil leak.

Passenger seat belt is stuck and will not retract.

Driver's seat belt failed.

The seat belts do not lock when braking.

Seat belt on drivers side is very worn and fraying.it is fraying due to a plastic guide that is supposed to keep safety belt in place.i do not feel comfortable driving the car and feel if i were to be involved in an accident the seat belt would rip and cause me to be thrown forward with the impact.

Seat belts at times donot retract, or at times will not buckle correctly.

The air bags did not deploy during an accident.*mrthe consumer was rear ended and hit other vehicles, as this happened, the seat back broke and the seat belt buckle had came loose.the engine continued to runand the fuel safety switch did not turn off.scc*nlm

Seat belt has become frayed while passing through retractor guide.seat belt tangles and will not retract due to poor guide design.numerous dealers contacted and advised about possible seat belt failure and lack of crash worthiness.all have said belt is out of warranty (problem first noticed at around 60k miles) and that ford was not responsible for replacement.wear on belt caused by retractor guide, not use or abuse.

While driving the hydraulic brake booster failed causing the steering wheel to lock up and loss of control (accident), as a result the seat belt retractor broke. *et

Consumernoticed that both driver and passenger retrctors deteriorated.the belts were inoperable.consumer was afraidthere was a great risk involved while driving without belts.

The seat belt retractor for both front seats jam.they jam when you are trying to pull them out to hook then together.this does not enable you to be able to hook up your seat belts. The first occurrence was sometimes in 1997.we contacted the dealer.they took the cover off off the retractor and straightened out the belt so it would work.this has been done several times by the dealer and by the owner of the vehicle.the belt is easily twisted and jams in the retractor.the retractor was replaced by the dealer 0n september 21, 1998.the problem continued, and the dealer was contacted again on june 2, 1999 and the retractor was replaced again.we have been in numerous times for this problem and it still is unresolved as to the retractor jamming.this is obviously a serious design defect which the manufacturer should correct immediately.the car cannot legally or safely be driven with a defective seat belt assembly.

Seat belts at times donot retract, or at times will not buckle correctly.

My car has been to the dealer twice for this problem and will be back next week for the same problem.the steering wheel shudders, becoming severe at speeds of 50mph or higher.when braking the wheel pulls hard, the pedal must be pumped to keep from steering right.if you brake hard the wheel "jerks"hard causing you to loose hold of the steering wheel if you are not expecting it.the rotors have been cut twice to correct the problem, this time it has made it much worse.

Rear sway bar sheared off at bolt hole on lower control arm on drivers side. I removed the part and placed in truck of car. Since this is a part that should last the life of the vehicle i called the dealer the next day for a replacement sway bar. I offered to bring the part in so they could inspect it to make sure the failure was not caused by abuse. Dealer was unwilling to help so i contacted fords customer relations. They state since the car is out of warranty and does not have a recall they will not help. They have been very evasive and difficult to work with. The first representative refused to let me speak to a supervisor when i was not satisfied with her decision. The final supervisor admitted she did not know what a sway bar was. If she did she would know they last the life of the car. Any help would be appreciated. They have made this seem like an isolated incident. From looking at the ntsa web site i see that i am not the only person to have this defect.

While backing vehicle into driveway noticed a dragging soundin the rear.believes this condition is not a normal wear for 40,000 miles.dealer notified.

Rear sway bar broken at left end. This is not a mounting failure but an actual break!this problem is so common that all dealers (more than five) in this area are out of replacement parts!!because this is part of the suspension system and because so much of the sway bar is hanging loose this should be considered a serious safty hazard.

Tires failed. (goodyear zr)

Tire are dry rotten.

I ordered this car at the very beginning of model year and requested to pay for an upgrade to premium tires instead of what came on the car.sarasota ford said that was impossible unless i paid for 2 full sets.the original equipment, guaranteed for 45000 wore out at 13,500 miles so poorly and unevenly that i just replaced them because they scared me.now i feel there was more to my problem and i could have had a blowout in a convertible from defective tires.the service mgr at the tire store could not believe the tires had only gone 13000 miles.i don't know if the tire info is on the original sales receipt for the car.i truly feel those tires i was forced to buy were defective.( dot number: 0 tire size: 16 )

Tires failed.(b.f. Coodrich comp t/a zr 245/45-17).

I have had to replace all 4 of these tires at a cost of 685 dollars to myself. The tires are coming apart at where the tread meets the sidewall much the same as the firestone tires that are being recalled. I took the vehicle into pauls tires in marion indiana and they would not replace them because fincannon ford did not buy the warranty. I then took them to another kelly dealer here in muncie. They called kelly and kelly denied any other complaints of this and i was charged for the replacemnet of the tires. The first ones to go bad were the front tires. Now the passenger rear is doing the same thing. I would think that people should be aware that firestone is not the only manufacturer having this separation problem. Had i not have been putting brakes on this car i would not have even noticed that the tires were separating. Most people do not look at the tires on their car. On my 1996 ford mustang the paint on my front fender, drivers door, trunk lid and roof had started peeling away from the primer brought it to a ford dealer and he said the same thing there is a problum with the paint and ford will not do anything about it

Air bag light is flashing a code, and no one can tell consumerwhat the code means.every now and thenengine check light goes on for no reason.consumer has taken vehicleto a number of mechanics, and no one could give her any reason whyvehicle was doing this.

While driving engine overheated. Engine check light came on, and car started smoking. Drove car home. Then took it to dealer.dealer saidthere was a recall on vehicle's make/model,but this vehicle was not included.

Vehicle makes a clicking sound when accelerating 40-50mph.

After setting the cruise control onvehicle it began to pick up more speed, andvehicle was going more than spedindicated. Dealer has not been contacted.

While sitting in traffic without prior warning the vehicle began to move forward and tap the car in front, as a result the dual air bag falsely deployed and broke the window.nlm

Was driving vehicle & felt transmission slipping. Had returned to dealer who refused to repair it. Later had cruise control on & vehicle suddenly accelerated. Applied brakes shut it off, but did not stop it. Turned vehicle off & restarted it. Vehicle has no air bags. Vehicle had a 1998 front repair done, but no accident had happened.

My cruise control will not turn off with the key.it retains its last known speed.

Car accelerates suddenly without warning at stop or at 0-5 mph(throttle goes wide open)in forward or reverse. Must shut off ignition switch to stop car, brakes will not stop car. Problem corrected by dealer under warranty first time. Replaced purge air valve. Fouryears later problem is reoccuring again. Believe purge air valve has failed again. Original servicing dealer is out of business. Wondering if this problem is widespread in mustang line since it has a potential to loose control of car, damage property or loss of a life.

Dt*: the contact stated the speedometer became stuck at 40 mph.the speedometer has been repaired two times in the past 2 years and this problem has recurred.this has been an ongoing problem with the vehicle since it was purchased.

While driving, vehicle accelerator sticks to the floor.please describe.
