I was involved in a serious auto accident on 11/17/98.i topped a hill and was struck headon by truck driving on the wrong side of the road.the blow was serious enough that it broke tie rods and suspension rods on my truck.i then went further down the road and down a 20 ft embankment, striking a large pine tree.though both impacts were on the front of the truck and the truck will likely be totaled (1999 truck), the air bags never deployed.calls to the dealer and to ford consumer department were ignored.i think that ford has a problem with the air bags on the new trucks.i checked my sticker and it indicated that air bags were part of the equipment.

From delivery, abs and check engine light intermittantly stay on. El;ectrical system sometimes 'stumbles' and looses voltage... As if it is going to stall.. Then it corrects itself until the next timedriving is very difficult at times due to poor front shock/spring setup.. Must fight to keep on road at times. I have had to place 500 lb. Weight in rear to improve this somewhat.

I bought my truck in feb. Of '99 and change the oil and filter every 3000 mi.. I use motorcraft parts and i only use the truck for hauling soda drinks for my business. Needless to say, the truck is still like brand new!! from the very beginning, the engine would develop a slight knocking about 10 to 20 seconds after initial start-up in morning. As the miles increased, so did the length of time the knock took to go away. The knock has gotten louder and longer and the dealer where i took it on sat. 3/17/2001, told me i need new motor!!

Due to defective turbo intake which blewout vehiclestalled while driving. This might have caused a crash.dealer fixed this part5 times, but it is still reoccurring.also, while downshifting from 2nd gear to 1st gearvehicle will go into reverse automatically, causing damages to the rear part of vehicle. One turbo lost its power and shutdown before being pulled over to road side.the transmission does not go into reverse gear.

While driving vehicle would stall on road, turbo-chargerwould not kick in. There was aloud knocking, took to mechanic, who saidthat there was a problem with the seventh ring.

This questionnaire is complicated. There are problems too numerous to list all here. This vehicle has rear end problems, engine, diesel exhaust, fumes inside truck' cupping of the tires and front end problems. The towing power is terribble. Cruise control kicks off if truck is in a pull on a slight incline. Loss of power like engine dies when you pull off from stop. Dealer is trying to fix, but so far no luck. When driving on interstateat 55 mphspare tire cable broke from underneath of vehicle, causing the tire to drop down ontohighway which caused a near accident. Consumer has contacteddealer. Please provide any further details.

Spare tire asembly cable snapped - tire flew off truck and almost struck 2 other cars

The spare tire broke loose from under the truck while traveling down the highway, being that we were pulling a 24'enclosed race car trailer at the time the spare tire broke off. When hit by the trailer it threw the trailer in the air braking the axels on impact.luckily no one was in the oncomming lane at the time or following to close behind.damage was cause heavily to the trailer, the truck seems to be ok.i am glad we weren't traveling down a major highway at the time of the incident.

Have noticed failed third brakelights an almost all 1999+ f250/f350s on the road. Talked to many who experienced the same failure. Then checked mine and found it failed. Extremely high failure rate for a safety related component.unfortunately, light bulbs are not covered under the warranty past 12,000 iles.this lamp burns out every couple weeks it appears.

01/2016:vehicle was being driven home from work when there was a loss of engine power.vehicle was able to roll to a stop in the parking lot of a church.later it was determined this resulted from failure of #7 cylinder injector unit, believed to have failed due to delamination inside of fuel tank.about 02/23/2014, 207980 miles: fuel tank had been removed and internal screens cleared due to the engine stalling while driving prior to injector failure.internal pick-up tube screens were blocked with delamination material from the inside of the tank.two new fuel pumps had been purchased and installed prior to cleaning the internal pick-up screens.i have receipts for work and parts relating to the fuel system problem.

The contact owns a 1999 ford f-350 pick up. The contact was driving 60 mph when the fuel straps detached from the fuel tank. The vehicle was towed to dealer where the dealer confirmed that both fuel tank straps were rusted and needed replacement. The manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed the vin did not qualify for recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 99v311000 ( fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). The vehicle was repaired.the failure mileage was 121,000 and the current mileage was 124,000.

Nhtsa recall 99v311000 and manufacturer'srecall 99s32/ fmvss 301- fuel system integrity.parts were not available.

Rear fuel tank strap that holds the fuel tank in position failed.in 2003 ford had a recall on this truck to install safety straps around the fuel tank in case there was a failure of the main straps.when the rear strap failed the safety strap failed and the only thing holding the tank in the truck was the fuel line. The tank was about 3/4 full if it had separated all together it would have been a disaster and probably a fire.

When driving the vehicle stalls and dies.the dealer has replaed two fuel pumps .

Fuel pump had been blowing fuses. Dealers contacted stated part (fuel pump) was on national back order with a 4 to 6 week delay. Fuel pump died completely at night while on an interstate highway in oklahoma. Ford then replaced the fuel pump the next day.

Fuel line worn, caused by rubbing against another fuel line, resulting in leakage. *mjs

Fuel filter failure resulted in high pressure fuel leak that flooded the engine compartment with diesel fuel.approximately 10 to 12 gallons pumped from tank at high pressure, and sprayed all over engine and engine compartment.problem was not noticed after picking vehicle up from routine service. Noticed pungent odor which intensified as i was driving home.dealer stated they did not service fuel filter.when vehicle was picked to be returned to the dealer, diesel fuel came spilling off the top of the engine. Diesel fuel has penetrated the ventilation system and got all over front suspension parts removing paint from these parts.failure of fuel filter and resultant leak could have resulted in a fire, thank god it did not happen (note- fuel leak was occuring while i was driving home).will be happy to discuss this issue via telephone to give more details.

Engine died while traveling with wife and small children in truck on freeway. Following engine failure, brakes and steering became very difficult to manage while coasting off of freeway onto exit. Two of these instances occurred while driving on freeway within 2 months of each other. Engine began sputtering and then died completely within 10 seconds.the truck had to be towed to shamrock ford in dublin after each incident and no replacement vehicle was offered. After being fixed the 1st time there was a noticable lack of power and fuel consumption increased, leading to the second failure. I am very frustrated that the 40,000 dollar "dream truck" i purchased is a pile of unreliable junk. I bought a 5th wheel trailer to use with this truck and it is so unreliable that i am afraid to tow it anywhere. I will not allow my wife, who weighs 110 lbs, to take the kids anywhere for fear that she would not be able to control the vehicle if this occurred again. Do i have any recourse? thank you, tony zwetsloot

Owner has dual fuel tanks. Iffront tankdoes not stay fullgas fromrear tank goes intofront tank.front tank receives gas from rear tank, and if gas cap is opened, fuel will spray out.dealer has not seen vehicle.

The u-bolts failed, and the axel dropped down. We heard a "thud" , and felt a dropping sensation. The steering immediatley became inoperable, and the truck crashed into several bales of hay. The driver's side door was damaged. When i contacted parker toyota, they claimed my extended warranty did not cover the axel. I then paid for the repairs out of pocket. Later the same day, i pulled a vin history on the vehicle, and found that the odometer had been rolled back. When we purchased the truck, we were told that it was a trade in from a guy that bought it at parker ford, and traded it in to parker toyota. The true story (verifed by ford motors), was that the truck came out of terrace, bc. It went to auction in may 2000, where the odometer was converted from km to us miles. They have records that it went in to the odometer shop with 68,000 km, and came out with 33,100 us miles. This is a mistake of nearly 10,000 miles. Parker toyota admits that they are at fault for the odometer fraud, but refuses to do anything about it. We are filing suit against parker toyota for fraud.

We have experienced repeated transmission problems including 2 total breakdowns, the last one on 09-07-2000 endangered everyone in the vehicle. May 9, eratic shifting, speed control sensor had to be replaced, may 10 - may 22, shifting problems continued, control module replaced. May 23, total transmission failure, transmission was rebuilt onjune 8.. June 29, shifting problems started again. July 18, ford dealer checked, reprogramed transmissionand told me no problems found. July 31, ford dealerload tested truck, replaced module and reprogramed again, everything ok. September 7, towing trailer down 7% - 7 mile lewiston grade transmission failed, lost engine compression braking and had to rely only on brakes to slow truck. Had no transmission in any gear when we reached bottom. New transmission now being installed. This is a safety problemwhichplaced everyone in the truck in danger.

Vehicle gives a loud metallic knocking sound from the transmission/ flywheel area gives sluggish performance and transmission slippage.

The vehicle is being used to pull a trailer and the transmission will not hold the vehicle without putting it in park position.the vehicle will roll in the opposite direction.

Transmission in for repairs on three occasions, sensor failed.*mjs

While driving down the road atapproximately 50mph and applying the brakes, heard a heavy noise. Whentaking off and givingitgas, vehicle won't shift, and the rpms were higher. Also, speedometer would go out. Vehicle is the fifth time at the dealer for service.

While driving onhighway transfer case broke andvehicle was no longer able to run.there was no prior waring. Consumer has contacted dealer, anddealer said they couldn'tdo anything becausevehicle is no longer under warranty.

Four wheel drivewill engage at any speed while making a turn or stopping. Dealership has examinedvehicle three times, and cannot effectively remedy the problem.please provide any additional information/attachments.

Transfer case shifting fork wore out. Truck had only been in four wheel drive about a dozen times all in snow conditions on major hiways. No offroading at all. Had to replace the shifting fork, a planetary gear an a imput shaft. This was the only way ford would sell the repacement parts. Ford has made a design change on the shifting fork.

When on a downhill of about 20-25 degrees when vehicle is placed in park after a couple of seconds it will roll 2-3 feet then stop this is duplicabale although after 2 times it will not do it again until on level surface and then back on hill.i almost rolled thru my gate at my house.

Transmission system malfunctioned, which while reversing and pulling a trailer, transmission overheated andburned out. Dealer redesigned the transmssion and cooling system.vehicle was still experiencing the problem, and vehicle downshifted,it did not slow down the vehicle.please provide further information.the vehicle is not equiped with mechanism to control vehicle's speed when descending steep grades. The transmission failed twice prematurely. The transmission also over heats under heavy load and when driving in reverse.

Transmission/engine cranckshaft are misaligned. Torque convertor in bind. Vehicle makes a metal grinding noise. Vehicle needs to be driven before working properly.

Cab of the truck vibrated very hard at any speed.took to mechanic and they replaced torque converter, then hub, still same problem.took to ford, ford replaced tires, still shaking. Then, they replaced driveshaft, still shook. Dealer did not know what the problem was.please provide any further information.

The contact owns a 1999 ford f-350. While the vehicle was at the dealer for routine maintenance, the mechanic indicated that the rear axle was faulty and would need to be replaced. Although the vehicle had not experienced any failures, the rear axle was replaced. The contact indicated that approximately 30,000 miles, later the mechanic indicated that the rear axle was faulty again and the axle was replaced a second time. After having the axle replaced, the contact was unable to shift to the sixth gear while driving approximately 65 mph. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 363,000. Plastic spacer in clutch assembly broke, causingclutch to malfunction.please provide further information.

The vehicle's clutch mechanism failed while driving. As a result the vehicle was unable to come to an complete stop. Please provide any additional information.

The plastic retainer located where the clutch pedal engages the rod for the clutch master cylinder wears out allowing the rod to disengage the pedal assembly without any notice of inpending failure. This happened to me in a crowded parking lot at the canton trade days. Luckily i was in 1st gear and was able to idle to a parking space without hitting anyone or anything. Once the pedals comes loose and the engine is stopped it cannot be restared without the pedal assemble being in place. This problem can be avoided by returning back to the old style ball and socket set up used on older vehicles and doing away with the plactic pieces in the setup. Had i been behind someone or been in a downtown driving situation where a pedestrian been in front of me such as a stop light when it decided to come loose the outcome may have been extremely serious.

A spring keeps popping out of clutch disc and jamming it. Consumer had clutch replaced 4 times. Cause is unknown.

Clutch locks up and its impossible to shift gears.failures occur without any warning when the clutch disc spring pockets break, jamming the clutch.if this happens intraffic it could cause a serious accident. Fordadmits that there is a failure problem with clutchdisc. Consumer says clutches are lasting 25k miles between failures.*ml

Low clutch engagement causing the clutch to release with pedal against down stop or not to release at all.had truck towed for safety reasons.when the clutch doesn't release this could cause an accident and failure to be able to stop vehicle when clutch goes all the way to the floor and not disengage clutch. *jg

Clutch replaced several times due to breakage during service/inspection.*mjs

Clutch was replaced at 40000 miles, it needs to be replaced again.manufacturer/dealer have been notified.*scc

Clutch hydraulic release system failed catastrophically, causing vehicle to jump forward immediately and violently.fortunately the car in front of me was far enough away so that i didn't hit it, before getting vehicle stopped.on investigation, i found that the roll pin which holds the clutch line into the slave cylinder had backed out, and allowed the high pressure line to disconnect.when this happened, the clutch engaged violently, and the vehicle lurched forward on engine power.this could have caused a major accident, if any of the circumstances had been different.

Clutch slave cylinder stuck to the floor almost resulting in vehicle hitting another, service bulletin on failure, however unable to fix due to back ordered parts. Mjs

I am not the only ford f-350 truck owner having these clutch problems.i have talked to several guys who have put 3 or more clutches replaced under 100,000 miles.there is definately a problem with these clutch assemblies.these trucks are sold as super-duty work trucks, but are not withstanding the workloads they are supposedly built for.i have contacted ford several times with no satisfaction.i feel a recall should be in order.

Ie99-069;when traveling 68 mph andattempting to downshift, the clutch would not disengage, shifted out of gear. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has not replaced parts. Please provide any further details.

Whenever driving at various speeds clutch would go out. Would have no prior warning. Had taken to dealership at least 4 times, and clutch has been changed 4 times. There isn't any indication of cause of problem. It still exists.

Clutch did not slip at all.was in 5th and slowing for an exit to 4th.clutch would not engage to 4th,towed to dealer.told springs failed and had been failing a long time.also informed that dealer has had frequent problems and ford has redesigned clutch assembly three times.power steering will just go out usually in a turn. Eems to happen when engine is hot or running over hour or so.

Vehicle was at a complete stop and manual clutch went out. Vehicle lurched forward through a red light..

Consumer has difficulty getting the transmission into gear and when shifting, when the transmission does shift gears, there is a grinding noise, the free play in the clutch is always different, sometimes the clutch would engage when the clutch pedal was near the top , other times the clutch would engage when the clutch pedal was pushed all the way.the consumer was informed that there was a 6 inch piece of rubber hydraulic hose in the hydraulic line of the clutch assembly, so when the vehicle was warmed up, it expanded instead of staying ridged.ford is aware of the problem and updated the clutch assembly, however, the consumer was told that problem is considered a wear item.*scc

Clutch pedal will not return when applied.vehicle taken to dealer, and was informed of a yoke failure.repairs were madeat consumer's cost.dealer stated that this is not an uncommon problem.replacement parts were from ford, consumer is concerned why failed yoke is not a manufacturer defect.

While driving on a flat surface at 15mph, the vehicle lost its clutch.making it hard to stop the vehicle.dealer notified.the consumer stated that the roll pin that holds the hydraulic line to the slave cylinder on the clutch had come out and the line dropped down.(no clutch)*scc

Manual transmission clutch rod cylinder broke while shifting to make a turn. Was going only 25mph on a back road. Was able to restart vehicle and drove it home. Had it towed to dealership, and mechanic could not find cause of breakage, but was able to replacerod and slave cylinder.

We have had 3 1999 superduty's 6-speed duallys when we bought them.all started having the same problem at about 3,000 miles.every time that you would be going down the road and you turned, the rear would make a bumping and grinding noise. You can hear it on the outside real bad.we took them to the dealership because they all started leaking rear end oil.they put the part on them, but the problem persisted.the leak had stopped on all of them, but the grinding noise still remained.we had to let one of them go back because it was so bad.the others are still doing horrible.plus, when you put them into gear, mainly in reverse, you hear this god awful popping noise coming from the front when you start going.they all make that grinding noise in the rear end even when backing up and turning.please help me.i have taken these trucks to the dealership so many times and yet they still all have the same problem.thank you again

I have had the front brakes replaced 3 times and the rear brakes replaced 2 times. These repairs were all done within the 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Soon after the warranty ended, the brakes failed again. I brought the truck to the dealer and they stated the truck was fine. This is in no way a true statement. Each time i have brought the vehicle in for these brake problems, they have replaced the brakes and have agreed there was a problem. The last time they have wanted nothing to do with it. There also was a recall for the rear brakes.

At 10009 miles i had brake shutter(vehicle would shake) when applying the brakes. This would occur more at highway speeds. I brought the vehicle to a ford dealer ( monaco ford 767 new london tnpk po box 110 glastonbury ct 06033 phone 1-800-727-2377)and they repaired the problem. On a number of occasions in the following months i have repeatedly had the same problem and the dealer has repeatedly repaired the problem. I have listed the dates and mileage. Second occurence june 1999 mileage 22876. Third occurrence june 1999 mileage 24225. Fourth, oct 1999 mileage 36370. Fifth, jan 2000 mileage 46492. In feb of this year the problem came back again and i contacted the dealer and they stated to me that they didn't know what else to do and ford wasn't giving them any more input so they had to take the stance that there wasn't anything else they could do for me. I contacted the ford customer assistance center on a number of occasions and was repeatedly told that the truck was out of warranty and there was nothing that they could do for me even though they realized that this has been an ongoing problem since 10000 miles. One of the phone reps at c.a.c. Did tell me that ford realized that this was a problem but they did not have a fix for it at this time. Her name was shirleen(this was on or about feb 21 2000). We she stated that ford had agknoledged the ongoing problem, she told me that ford would continue to repair my truck dispite the expiration of its warranty. The problem continues to worsen and at this time the truck violently shakes when i apply the brakes at all speeds over 40 mph and i am very concerned about safety if i were to incure a panic braking situation. I have desparatly tried to contact a ford representative through the c.a.c. And the dealer but they are unable to put me in contact with someone from ford. Therefor because of the lack of contact from ford i have been forced to contact my attorney to help me with this matter. A written supliment will follow.

Headlight switch failed unexpectedly, going to work.brakes pulsate when applied at all speeds, dealer cut down rotors at apporox. 23,000 miles...i asked if they had any others need cut at that mileage, he stated was probably due to rust...i purchased this truck only 4 weeks after build date, and it does not sit...truck continues to have a pulsating brake, and is hard to stop.

When applying brakes at high rate ofspeed, driver will feel a vibration, at low speed a pulsation will occur underneath the pedal. Dealer has cut rotors three times and replaced rotors three times.

Brake rotors keep warping causing cyclic loading and possible fatigue failure to steering and braking components.design change has been made to recent production, old units are still defective in design and/or manufacture.

Brake rotors repeatedly warp.first time, dealer covered under warranty at 12937 miles.second time, dealer claims that warranty repairs for brakes are not covered after 12000 miles.air conditioner totally failed last summer--so far working ok.

All four rotors and pads failed and were replaced only after a year.nlm

Consumer stated the rotors failed prematurely, which also caused the brakes to fail, when dirt was between the brake and the inside of the rotor, it caused premature wear, and the caliper became in contact with the rotor which created a metal to metal contact.mr

When applying the brakes the front left wheel locked up,causing vehicle topull to the left. Dealer has replaced has replaced the 2 front rotors.

Front left tire hub broke off causing the truck to hit a bridge, driver says the truck dropped down and then hit the bridge, the tire fell off before impact with the bridge, this accident totalled our truck and did significant damage to the bridge. Have compalined to ford, they will not replace truck, says it was our fault, but we know the tire fell off, the investigator told us the nut on the inside backed off, causing the front left tire and hub to break off, and it was in noway our fault, is a defect in the truck..

I feel there is a design defect in the parking brake system on my vehicle.i have spoken to owners of similar and all seem to have this problem.when the paking brake is applied it is insufficient to hold the vehicle from rolling.

Consumer was travelingabout 30pmh onhighway. As he was approaching the light, went to applybrake the pedal, and pedal went all the way down to floor.there were no brakes, and consumer ran into another vehicle. There were no injuries. Vehicle has been to the dealership, andmechanic told consumer that the brake line needed to be replaced.

At 30mph brake hose starts to leak fluid, making it hard for vehicle to stop. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

While drivingabout 50 mph consumerreleased accelerator, and stepped on the brakes pedal to stop vehicle. The brakes pedal went all the way to the floor, forcing consumer to use the emergency brake.according to consumer, the brakes problem occurred because theleft rear brake line was unprotected.vehicle was towed to dealer.

Vehicle lost braking capability at highway speeds due to brake line separating at a union, causing brake fluid leakage. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

Flexible steel brake line has ruptured, causing complete brake failure. .et.

While driving 45-65 mph, brakes malfunction/ lock up, consumer took vehicle to dealer twice. Consumer states that on 23-feb-2002 dealer replaced hydro boost and front pads vehicle started locking up again, on 24-feb-2002 dealer replaced master cylinder and now brakes are working.*yd

Fastener clip that holds the brake pedal was omitted at the factory, causing the pedal to fall off without warning, resulting in an accident. *ml

When consumerapproaches a stop sign vehicle moves by itself.he has to pumppedal two or more times to stop. Pedal is bleeding through the system.

Hydro-boost assembley started leaking at master cylinder and hydro-boost mount point. Lost of brake assist and steering due to fluid level loss. Ford dealer has truck for repairs repalcing hydro-boost assembly. I see this is the third reported incident on the web page.

Brake system failed.also, steering system failed due to a faulty hydroboost unit that controls brakes and steering.

The contact owns a 1999 ford f-350. The contact stated that while traveling 40 mph, the power steering failed and caused the contact to crash into a snow bank. The contact was uninjured. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop where the vehicle was inspected. The technician advised the contact that the failure was caused by crystallization of the steering shaft, which was fractured. The failure and the current mileage was 145,000.updated 02/15/12*ljthe consumer stated there was no road hazard to cause the steering shaft failure. Updated 02/17/12

At 55 mph truck became sluggish/hard to steer while rounding curve. Steering seemed to be unresponsive and resulted in head on collision which resulted in 1 death in the oncoming vehicle. My truck overturned upon impact, and was taken to trauma center with cuts/bruises and head wound.

The contact owns a 1999 ford f-350. The contact stated that while the owner was operating the vehicle, the power steering assist malfunctioned. The contact indicated that the power steering assist was available while turing the steering wheel to the left however, was not available while turning the steering wheel to the right. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 190,000.

The contact owns a 1999 ford f-350. While the contact's father was driving 55 mph, he swerved to avoid striking another vehicle. When the brake pedal was depressed, the driver's side tires did not stop and the steering seized. As a result, the driver struck a tree and the vehicle rolled into a ditch. A police report was filed. The air bags did not deploy. The contact's father sustained blunt force trauma to the torso and was fatally injured upon impact. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. The vin was not available.

While drivingat any speed andeven when vehicle stopped, would step on the brakes and steering wheel would freeze.consumer won't be able to turn.this happened at all time. Dealer claimed it was a normal operation.

Thereis too much play in the steering, especially when driving on the highway. Steering movedeither side just a bit, and consumer tried to correct, then lost control.

While making a sharp right turn and applying the brakes vehicle would not steer and kept going. Driver hit a little embankment and ended up in a hay field.air bags did not deploy when this happened, and no one was injured.vehicle was towed to the dealership for repairs.also, whole steering gear box was being replaced because the shaft broke.

When thebrakes are applied the steering wheel will lock up. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

Consumer stated that the steering wheel was not centered off to the left properly.

While driving sector shaft broke, causing vehicle to lose control.*jg

Consumer stated that the steering wheel was not centered off to the left properly.

You can not turn the steering wheel while your foot is on the brake pedal. Like when you need to park pull in or out of your driveway go at a very slow speed and turn. If you had to turn the wheel and apply the brakes as if a kid run into the road you could not do that.

Consumer states steering column has a resistance in the wheel, and does no return to the center after turning.

While driving vehicle severely pulls toright or left and extreme vibration occurs, causing loss of vehicle control. Replacedsteering gear box. Consumer states all the ball joints and bushings in front end also had to be replaced.rear brake pads were replaced.

Steering wanders. Dealer added steering stablizer, but still wanders all over road.

Ongoing problem with power steering loss whenever brakes are applied in a sudden situation. Dealer / manufacturernotified and informedconsumer that it was a normal characteristic for that vehicle. Asking nhtsa to share some light on this matter.

I was on an internet site called ford-diesel.com and a few guys there reported a problem with their steering locking up when applying the brakes hard.one guy even reported that he was unable to steer his truck when he was hit from behind and had to brake hard to get control of his truck.i decided to do a little test on my truck to see if my truck had the same problem.i applied my brakes hard at about 55 mph and tried to steer and sure enough the steering wheel was locked up.see this link for the guy who almost lost his life http://forums.ford-diesel.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=24&t=003307 .i am not sure if ford is doing anything about this problem buy guys with bran new trucks are reporting they have the same problem and their dealer is saying they have no fix for it.i would hate to see someone pulling a large load with one of these trucks and not be able to steer when they needed to.

While making a"hard stop" t vehicle loses all power steering which may result ina crash.dealer cannot determine the cause.been to dealer several times, and said it was the characteristic of the vehicle.please provide further information.

When vehicle brakes are applied, steering becomes difficult.turning steering wheel quickly, causes steering wheel to momentarily lock up.a second and related problem is an excessively soft suspension system.when a quick turn is required, these two problems mentioned here, in my opinion and experiences, combined, create a potentially dangerous situation.

All power steering lost at idle when brakes applied, had all components replaced by dealer and still have same problem, very dangerous.

While driving 45 mph consumer lost power steering. This caused a collision. Consumer sustainedminor injuries.had vehicle towed to dealer.

Driving at 25 mph hit something in the road, lost powersteering/brakes . The consumer used the emergency brake and slowed the vehicle down, the consumer had power steering/brake radiator replaced, dealer can't determine the problem.

On several occasions, consumer complains that the front end pulls badly to the right, dealer replaced a worn part on the right side and have realigned front end, but problem still exists.

Simply put in physics terms the front end goes into unwanted resonant vibration where the trunk is out of control. This has benn reported to the dealer and ford customer service. They do not understand what unwanted resonance vibration is. The trunk is out of control and the driver has to use the emergency brake to slow the truck till the vibration goes away at about 30mph.

I had just checked the tire pressures (70psi) prior to leaving home. 45 minutes into the trip, i felt 2 or 3 seconds of rough shaking of the steering wheel and then a loud noise accompanied by a "drop" of the left rear of the vehicle. I had taken my foot off of the acelorator at the shaking and maintained control while gently braking and when slowed enough, pulled off of the highway. I was towing a gooseneck trailor and all whights were within load capacity of the f350. The sepeaated tire tread completely tore up the rear panel of the truck, two estimated within $50 of each other; lowest was $2654. I filed a claim with firestone to pay or the repair and was required to send them the tire remants as part of that claim. I think those tires are too light for a superduty truck rated at 3600# load capacity. There were no injuries with the blow-out, but i cut my finger really badly undoing the bent fender strut damaged by the tire in order to get the spare tire on. Tires were constantly going flat. Several times i pulled pieces of gravel/rock out to find that was the cause of the leaking.i feel these tires were unreasonably susceptible to punctures . To hear of gravel piercing through the tire, i replaced them fearing that if i hit a larger piece of debris that a severe tire failure may occur. (tiresize: 265/75/16)

Tire blowout occured at 55 mph on straight section of dry smooth gravel covered highway during daylight conditions with outside air temperature of approximately 75 degrees f.two weeks prior to failure vehicle had tires inspected, inflated (60 lbs psi), and rotated by firestone tire center dealer. After incident the destroyed tire was taken to same firestone tire center dealer where i reported the incident.dealer informed me that this tire was not part of other firestone tire recalls.dealer replaced tire under provisions of firestone road hazard insurance protection which i had perviously purchased. I am submitting this report due to later information in the news reported on 9/29/2000 that nhtsa had begun an investigation of the same type of firestone steeltex at tires as used on my ford f350 pickup truck because of a series of complaints nthsa has received in recent months concerning tire failure situations which seemed to be the same type as i had experienced.(note - this tire failure is the second i have experienced since purchasing the vehicle new in september 1999.the first occured within the first 500 miles of vehicle ownership but did not result in a blowout, but with a sidewall failure above the treadline.this failure was also returned to the same firestone tire center dealer for replacement.) We were traveling hwy 40 at about 60 mph around 2:00 p.m. When our right rear tire exploded.as the tire tread was peeling off, i tried to gain control of my truck/camper to avoid going off the shoulder or a head-on crash.the blowout caused about $2000.00 in damages beside complete tire replacement.i made a claim through farmers insurance agency and the damage has been documented.additionally, i still have the damaged tire and rim. Upon my return from this trip, i immediately replaced the tires because i felt i might not be so lucky if i had another blowout like this.i feel this blowout was due to a defect in the tire because of the way the tread unraveled and the steel belts blew out.i would like some information how to pursue reimbursement for these damages.your prompt reply will be appreciated.( dot number: vnw8 tire size: 265/75/r16 )

The left rear tire blew out an approx. 3inch section of the side wall on the out side of the tire, a section stayed on the rim and the inside of the tire was intact. There was no evidence of tread separation on the tread. The loca firestone dealer inspected the tire and could find no reason for the failure. They replaced the tire with the same type for a prorated price of$64.78. The tires were inspected by me before i left for yosemite national park and inflation and condition appeared ok. The failure occured aprox. 35 miles into the trip at about 9:30 am pdt and the temperature wasapprox. 60 to 70 degrees. The failure occured on business is80, westbound , inside lane.the pickup was empty at the time of failure, if i would have been pulling my fifth wheel trailer with a gross combined vehicle weight og 18560lbs, the results could have been a serious accident as i was in rush traffic and on the inside lane of a six lane freeway. I was able to control the truck and move safely to the outside shoulder to change the tire. I am reluctant to use my trailer with these tires as i do not want my wife because of inacaction by firestone and ford to replace these alledged defective tires. I urge your agengy to initiate an immediate recall of these tires if action is not taken within the next 30 days, i will be contacting my congressional representatives for action on this serior problem. The truck is being bought back by ford; so i don't know the size / make; i'm 99% sure it was firestone tires on the truck.the thread wrapped around the front suspension thereby locking the tire from moving causing almost loss of control of the vehicle (i've raced stock cars 10 years and am fairly used to blowouts, this was far more violent than anything i've ever felt in a race car).the tire wrapped around the front suspension damaging the fender, inner fender well, brake line and power steering lines.the tire could not be gotten off the truck until several hours of work it was wrapped around things so bad.the vehicle is in tn where the tire blew out; i left it there for ford to decide to buy back or not as it was unsafe to drive after this with the damage, not to mention we didn't trust the other tires on the truck after this.the tire was in the back of the truck (in the bed), however as i said; ford is buying back the vehicle (although i don't have that in writing yet; only verbal confirmation).the tire looks worse than any of the pictures on cnn today of blowouts, it's worth getting a picture of.the passenger and myself have no injuries nor claims against firestone / ford for the problem; other than the passengers almost heart attack (we had tractor trailers surrounding us in front, behind and to the right). Ps: the truck had numerous other problems with clutch not working, brakes, and engine problems; hence the buy back.
