Number 1 fuel injector became defective, causing vehicle to hesitate and shake, not driveable. 2 days after dealer fixed it , number 4 injector became defective . Dealer could not solve defect, had to take vehicle to another dealer. Cause is unknown.

Charleston county operates a fleet of 20 ambulances. In the past 60 days we have discovered 5 units that have fuel leaking from the fuel/water separator housing. The cause of the leak appears to be caused by the water sensor shorting and melting/burning a hole into the housing. This allows diesel fuel to leak on to the engine. This fuel can go undetected until a sufficient quantity accumulates to be readily visible. We have discovered this failure because we replace the filters in this housing on self imposed periodic interval. This accumulation of the fuel on the engine is in close proximity to the turbocharger. Once enough fuel accumulates raw heated fuel/fumes could be ignited. I have discussed this problem with ford motor company technical assistance representatives. Our local dealers- jones ford inc./843-744-3311- service department stated that they have seen numerous failures of this type on many of their customers vehicles.spontaneous combustion of leaking diesel fuel under the hood of an ambulance would be a catastrophic event.currently ford is not accepting responsiblity for consumer failures and consumers are being charged for replacements as a normal service item.(this is what jones ford is telling me.) ford motor company has made policy adjustments to assist charlestoncounty with the cost of these replacements. If you need futher information please call or e-mail me. Your assistance is appreciated.

Vacuum pump came apart, causing brake failure.

Loose steering is difficult to control.

While traveling steering wheel wanders left to right and there is a lot of play inside ofvehicle. Dealership is aware ofproblem.

While driving in new mexico in september 2001 i experienced a sudden loss of power steering. Continuing for approximately an additional 1/2 mile i pulled over and checked the power steering area. The high pressure hose end connected to the powersteering pump had separated from the fitting in the pump. Upon further inspection i found that the end that separated used an internal snap ring allowing the metal line to separate from the pump. The other end of the line was a standard high pressure hydraulic flare fitting common to brake lines and obviously far superior in design to the failed end. There is a segment of high pressure of high pressure hose so the reason for this inferior type of connector is unclear and unsatisfactory. Contacting ford provided no satisfaction and no answers. Four ford dealers have been contacted and all are familiar with the problem. Contacted ford direct and they said contact the dealer.i have the failed hose and a solution - please contact me. I plan to change this regardless of any outside assistance or cooperation. The local tv station already did a piece on this event last week and i'm getting thumbs up for pursuing this. Let's get something done. This is totally unsafe and there is an obvious and inexpensive cure.

The power steering line blowed off the couplin . Loss all control.the fitting just slides off on the end i noticed it when it was removed & new one replaced. The rubber line was still in good shape. .i think the fitting should be flared on the end so that the coupler cannot be pulled off.

This is regarding inability of an authorized ford dealer (gentry ford - baker city, oregon) to inspect and detect a ball joint problem which would be easily detectable in most vehicles. My concern is that impending ball joint failure for this particular year/model may be undetectable in some instances even when the vehicle has been thoroughly inspected by an authorized ford dealer such as gentry ford. Prior to purchase of this vehicle, i test drove it. During the short test drive i had not noticed any symptoms of loose ball joints although i did notice some wandering on the freeway but attributed it to local road conditions. While driving home on the freeway i noticed the wandering steering was present but attributed it to varying road conditions. Halfway home, some sharp turns at slow speeds caused binding during the turn. Finally, after arriving home and making a 90 degree turn uphill into my driveway (1-2 mph) i really noticed the severity of the ball joint condition. Not sure what was happening i took the truck to a different local ford dealer with a request to inspect the front suspension for any adverse conditions. Their report revealed that the right front ball joints were loose and their vehicle inspection report reflected that the suspension was unsafe and needed immediate attention (red). The gentry ford service department, was apparentlyunable to detectany problem(s) with the front suspension according to the vehicle safety inspection report done on the truck 4 days prior to purchase and had checked the suspension block as (green) incorrectly showing it was safe.my main concern is that not all ford dealers may be able to detect an unsafeball joint condition which may require a tsb to insure detection of unsafe ball joint conditions during normal safety inspections.
