As a past and present owner of ford vehicles, i wish to express my sincere dissatisfaction with the recent lack of support the ford motor company and its dealerships provide to insure the integrity of ford vehicle safety systems.i am writing with respect to a recent repair that was performed on the airbag system of my 1995 ford explorer.when the odometer read approximately 56,000 miles, the dashboard airbag indicator lamp began to illuminate.after taking it to dick ruhl ford at 7250 sawmill road in columbus, ohio for repair, i was informed that the cost of the repair ($425.45) would not be covered due to excessive mileage.in addition, two separate visits to the dealership were required to complete the repair since the source of the problem was not properly diagnosed initially.

Since leasing the vehicle, have had persistent problems with the front end, which resulted in wearing out several sets of expensive tires.reported same to seller ( r. Brown & sons, inc. ) but no resolution.involved in a crash in august, 1998, front end impact causing $2500 in damages, buckled hood, shattered bumper brackets, etc. But neither air bag deployed.took vehicle to a different garage because front tires again seriously worn.mechanic discovered right front stabilizer missing -- and no indication that it had ever been present.it is my belief that the vehicle was in a front end collision prior to our leasing it, a fact the seller did not divulge at the time.the salesman involved was terminated from employment at brown's shortly after we leased the vehicle.thank you for your time and consideration.
While driving ran off road and damaged front end, air bags did not deploy and fuel cut off system failed.

Thought the guy in front of me was going to go through a yellow light, so i figured i would follow in suit.thenhe just suddenly stopped, with me hitting him directly in the rearend.my seatbelts did not deploy, as my head hit and broke the windshield, and obviously the airbag did not go off.suffering chest bruising and troublebreathing.
I put on the brakes when i realized i was going to rear-end the car in front of me and when the accident happened the airbags and safety belt restraints failed, leaving me hitting the steering wheel and my head hitting the windshield.

Gracomodel number 8480hg, dom 2/17/01. I have a 21 month old boy and he can easily undo the harness clasp when in the seat. I think that the clasp is made of a too flexible material.manufacturer doesn't agree. Could you check into this?
I was driving my car when it began to down shift around 35mph. Eventually, after adding more gas, it kicked into gear. My vehicle is an automatic. Once it down shifts, the od light begins flashing on and off. It has now been doing this consistently. The drive is not a smooth drive and when i am going approximately 50-60mph or more, the car begins to shake.
Consumer states the third brake light on the rear does not work, he states when the service technician drove vehicle into bay to be serviced, the brake light flashed on for the first time in several months, which possibily meant there was a short in the light, also the head lights flicker badly, especially on rough pavement.

After operating the heater a fire occurred under the hood.it burned the plastic case around the heater core area. I was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.i contacted the local ford dealership and was told that no recalls had been issued on my vehicle (1995 ford explorer vin# [xxx]).the service tech at the dealership said that the heater core could not have caused the fire and that perhaps a mouse had built a nest inside and that could have been the cause.he did not mention any service bulletins regarding electrical problems in the dash,a/c/,heater area that i later found on the internet. He suggested i bring the car in for repair.needless to say i am not taking it to the dealership.i do have an appointment for monday (1/24/05) at a repair shop. I will know more about costs to repair and the extent of the damage then. I fear driving the car knowing it could catch fire again and am using a loaner car from a friend at work. 95 ford explorer parked in carport with engine shut off for 5 min while carried groceries up stairs - i hadleft dog in crate til finished unloading but when i came down noticed electrical smell, got out looked around car but did not notice any burning, got dog out and returned in three minutes to find key no longer unlocked door and could not see through windows - when door was opened smoke bellowed out, interior was covered with black soot, a hole bigger than a basketball was burnt out of seat and back of driver's seat was parched - had i not had the windows completely up it most likely would have to continued to burn.

The engine has been stalling for the past year for no reason.
Last year my car would shut down. Go from regular rpm to zero and die. This would lock my steering column. I observed that this happened when the outdoor temperature exceeded about 90 degrees f and the car was exposed to sun (more likely to shut down that if i was coming out of a covered garage where the temp was lower, until exposed to the higher outside temp read. The steering column would lock as the ignition shut off whether i was idling in a drive thru lane or existing a freeway ramp where i would expect to go from 55 to 35 to zero at the stop, i would go to zero and bypass 34-1 mph. Just complete system shut down and column lock. I took the care in and they said it was the fuel injectors and paid $500 for who knows what because the problem persisted. It's hot. The problem persists. It's dangerous. Am i placing my family at risk? i already had the aerostar catch fire in the steering column while i was at full freeway speed . I am afraid that a similar defect is at work here. The aero was a manual so i could always rev to keep the rpm up, the explore is auto trans and goes from drive to lock. Please help me.
My car stalls continuously on a steady basis - may be going ok and then just stalls and may take up to 30 times to get it to start again - will only go ifit is in neutral and i slam the gas pedal - also anti lock brakes skid all the time and i am told there is no problem.
Everynow and then the 4x4 lights flash, while in 2 wheel drive, windows won't roll upor down. Goes away after a few minutes. Ford replaced ignition, but it still does it. Dealer was a bad dealer and did not know what was causing problem but replaced ignition anyways.

My 1995 explorer was sitting and at 12:30am, when it caught on fire and burned. The fire started under the hood, and the vehicle was a total loss. The incident occurred on the evening march 23. This was the same evening that ford recalled the expedition for this very same type of problem, a cold vehicle catches fire under the hood. This was what our explorer did as well. However when we called ford they said that the explorer was not on the recall.

The contact owns a 1995 ford explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that there was an electrical failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. The vin was unavailable.
The vehicle doesn't shift since its missing the transmission wiring harness o/d sensor cant locate a replacement part the check engine light goes on all the time it uses a lot of antifreeze speed control don't work fuel pump keeps going out.
The temperature guage stopped working 12/98. The dealership was asked to look at it shortly thereafter. They said it was nothing to worry about...probably something in the wiring of the guage, and it may be expensive to find it. Several months later when the check engine light came on, the dealership replaced the thermostat. The temperature guage immediately began working. We could have encountered a number of serious problems (such as overheating in texas in the summer), but the dealership didn't catch it. Then, our lock actuator went out. Because it was a rear door, the dealership said the manufacturer's warranty didn't cover it. We paid $188.16 to fix it in addition to the extended warranty. If the dealer's warranty covers the front doors, it should cover the rear doors. This makes no sense and cost us a lot of money out of our pockets! we only have 65,000 miles on our car.
Significant loss of radiator coolant in the snow, while idling, after a 10 degree night.
The contact owns a 1995 ford explorer. The contact stated the vehicle was moved, and while he was in his house he heard a noise and within seconds thefront end of the vehicle was on fire. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard for further investigation. The fire report was not available. The manufacturer was contacted and they advised that the vehicle was included nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 vehicle speed control. The failure and the current miles were 187,000.
I don't know that the temperature gauge has ever worked correctly in this car - i just guessed dates and mileage, but i have had the car since 1997 (32,000 miles) and it has never worked correctly.this is my second ford explorer with this problem.furthermore, i recently spoke with a friend who had the same problem in his 1997 ford explorer.i do not think this problem is being reported because it is not obvious when the temperature gauge fails.

Engine replaced due to cooling system failures and continuous overheating.*skd
Radiator leaks.
The transmission is currently being rebuilt.a defective part allowed transmission fluid to leak into the radiator, and radiator fluid to leak into the transmission.the radiator must be replaced, and the transmission rebuilt.i only have less than 72,000 miles on the vehicle.i did not purchase the extended warranty when i purchased the vehicle because at a cost of over $22,000, i did not think anything should go wrong with the vehicle.i would like ford to pay for my auto repairs, and a recall to go into effect so that others with this car do not have to go through the same experience.100,000 miles is not unreasonable to expect a car's major components to last.

Consumer's concern over the handling by ford motor companies of the cruise control deactivation switch recall.*mrone nov 11, 2003 the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer because the brake light illuminated, brake fluid was leaking and the cruise control no longer functioned.the dealer quoted the consumer $5000 to fix the vehicle.the consumer declined the repair, purchased the part himself and replaced it himself.the consumer recently heard about the recall and contacted the manufacturer to see if he could recover the money he spent to replace the faulty parts.the manufacturer indicated that the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall.the consumer's vehicle also experienced stall during acceleration, excessive tire wear, pulling to the right and transmission failure.
There would be a knocking sound from the engine and this cause the vehicle to shake while driving. The speed could vary for the knocking but when vehicle is over 40mph, the vehicle would shake. Have taken to independent mechanic and indicated no recalls. Would not repair vehicle for free.ts
While drivingat 55mph a pop was heard, like a gun. Heard something hitting underneath vehicle. Was making a ding, ding noise. Was in moderate speed lane, steering, whenleft front corner nose dived. My concern is that everytime we take our explorer on a road trip we get a check engine light. It will come on atthe first 200 miles of the trip. I've pulled over everytime it has happened and checked all the services on it. I always found everything is where it should be. When we have departed from every stop to fill up. Driver's side low-beam headlight failed.the vehicle has a bulb sensing system, and issued a warning to check the headlamps.i replaced bulb, but it still did not work.a day later the passenger side low-beam headlight also failed, leaving the vehicle without any low-beam headlights.after looking for a fuse or wiring problem, i found through research that this is a rather common problem in this and similar vehicle models, and has been indirectly acknowledged by the manufacturer in a tsb, but no recall has been issued. To me this seems to be a serious safety concern, and should be addressed more proactively.

My guess is that this opacity occurred within the first 2 to 4 years.according my mechanic (who is a "ford man"), "this is a very characteristic and longstanding flaw with the ford brand, you would think ford would have dealt with this safety issue long ago, but ford has not and continues not to deal with it." this safeti issue/problem not inexpensive to remedy.
Clear coat is pealing on hood and over back hatch, transmission problems and headlight problems the headlight will not work on dim i have taken it to the shop and they can not find anything wrong with it.the sensor keeps going out on the transmission.
Lenses on headlights have become discolored. Dealer said yes it was a safety issue. But since vehicle was out of warranty they would do nothing . Consumer went, and had police look at headlights,.they stated yes he would be pulled over and cited due to headlights not being bright enough. The consumer believes it is the dealer's responsibility to replace the head lights.
I have a 1995 ford explorer which the headlight sensor continuously goes bad which would not be an issue if the headlights would continue to work without it.when this sensor, which has gone bad twice since i have had the vehicle, fails i should not be made aware of this until the headlight goes bad and the sensor does not alert me.when the sensor goes bad i get an indication that the headlights are out and when replaced they are still out because the true problem is the sensor has gone bad.how a sensor goes bad when it still senses the lamp not functioning is beyond me.this is a design deficiency in my opinion and the manufacturer should be recalling this item due to the obvious safety issue.the sensors should be replaced by the manufacturer at no cost to the customer and replaced with a sensor that if it were to fail would not affect the operation of the headlights.
Headlamp assemblies were originally clear plastic but have aged not very well to the point where they are opaque (cloudy) and i feel the light output has diminished considerably below original lumen levels.i have noticed majority of ford products that are over 3-4 years of age have clouded plastic headlamps. Close examination reveals slight crazing of the plastic outer surface as well as general dullness of the plastic.
1995 ford explorer eddie bauer. Headlights went out, found out through research that it is the lamp outage module located in the console of the car. Almost started a fire, completely melted module and affected other areas of the electrical system, very dangerous and no recall that i can find. Part is dealer only and 90.00.
Vehicle had been parked and locked for 30 hours prior to fire.fire appears to have spontaneously ignited in the left side of the dash area of the headlight switch and dimmer control for the interior lights.
Rear center tail light assembly had complete failure; dealer says it will cost between $250 and $300 to replace.i presume it is a safety problem since i failed annual inspection due to the failure of this component.are there other reports of similar failures?i am upset that i have to pay so much for a component that should have lasted more than 3.5 years.
I have a 1995 ford explorer the windows work sometimes you mit drive a block than thay don'tand the 4/4 will the same thing . My son has 1995 explorer it will do the same thing is there a recall if not ther shough be thank you .
Multi-function switch failed
After driving through water engine died after water was sucked into engine pistions due to airintake being located on bottom of vehicle.
Since purchase of vehicle in 1998 following components had to be replaced: transmission/fuel pump/ all 4 tires blew and not on recall/ cruise control/radio quit, and no longer able to buckle drivers seat belt.*et
Fuel pump failed.
Part is back-ordered country wide. Must mean that there is quite a few defective fuel lines which could cause a fire on impact due to leaking gas.
As i drive the explorer on the highway or at any speeds for longer periods of time(200+ miles), engine checklight comes on, and the horsepower is affected.gas mileage decreases to about 8 mpg, and this lasts for as long as the vehicle is driven. I have had the transmission replaced, and i have changed the spark plugs, the spark plug wires, the mass air-flow sensor, the fuel filters and the alternator. The problem is still occurring though. I would like to get the problem fixed so as to feel safe in this vehicle.
While driving ran off road and damaged front end, air bags did not deploy and fuel cut off system failed.
Consumer noticed while filling vehicle with fuel, fuelleaking out from under the wheel wells puddles. Manufacture and dealer has been contacted. Vehicle was service by technician and notice gas neck filler. Please provide further information. Ts
Fluid which was later confirmed to be oil from overflow tank spilled out on brakes on passenger side.i had to drive 2 hours back to north carolina because the dealership in galax, va closed at noon on saturdays.if i was by myself it would be a different story but i had my child with me.town and country ford confirmed the situation and stated that ford had sent out a memo saying if the vehicle was in warrantee the could put the cover on to prevent this problem but due to my mileage i had to pay $375.oo not including parts to have this taking care of.my question is if they put this device on and knew this could happen why not warn the consumer instead of finding out this way and why should i have to pay for a potential safety hazard which was not of my making.i called the 800 number on several occasions; got a claims number and that was it. The second time they said call town and country ford which the regional rep still hasn't responded. Next, i sent them a e-mail stating the problem and still no response. On the tires, which i had to replace myself, except for the spare which is a firestone, since the warranty was not honored stating that since they were only theywere only the stateside receiving dealership they were not responsible.the tires blew out less than two weeks after picking up the vehicle.i am very displeased with ford.according to the distance of travel i have resorted to renting so i would not have to worry about getting into an accident with my child in the vehicle.this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.i can replace a vehicle but not a life.however, i refuse to pay for something which was already there to begin with.thanking you in advance for your time and attention in this matter.
When driving consumer can smellgas in the vehicle. Took vehicle for service and the dealer noticed that there was split at the seam of the gas tank.if the consumer were tohit a bump or a hard object, the vehicle might blow up while driving.
When filling tank with gas, regardless of level, gas comes back out of tank; flows onto ground underneath wheel well.tt
The straps that hold the fuel tank in place are broken and corroded, causing the fuel tank to be connected only to the fuel lines.please give any further details.

The contact owns a 1995 ford explorer. The contact stated that he noticed that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The failure mileage was 56,000.
Dome lights stay on. Consumer is worried it may cause an electrical fire.
Courtesy light bulb shorted and smoke came from the center of the dash which caught fire.
Dome light will not turn off, causing poor visibility to the driver while driving at night.vehicle was taken to the dealer who could not determine the cause of the problem because the light turned off before arriving at the dealership.after leaving the dealership the light turned back on and would not shut off.
The drive gear in the transfer case failed and was replaced, 27k miles later the problem reoccured, the consumer believes that an incorrect component was installed, therefore causing it to fail again, while this was being repaired the dealer tore the door molding and the dash lights became inoperative.*nlm
Speedometer light does not work on the 30 to 40 mph range.
1995 ford explorer rear hatchwhere it connects to the hinge the spot welds broke. Went to 3ford dealerthey say this is been a problem read hatch to heavy welds weak. They said to contact ford. Called ford said nothing they could do for me. Told then rear hatchis going to fall off. Made a complaint . To see if a recall of fix problem. They said my problem. My fix.. I told them your dealers said this has been a problem and ford will not fix it. I need ford to fix my rear hatch be fore it falls off. Need your helpthis is been going g on for a year. I give up!
On the 1995 ford explorer, there exists a problem whereas an individuals couldbe trapped in the vehicle during an emergency, due to the lock mechanisms high rate of failure (poor quality material) on the rear passenger doors.to date, the doors cannot be opened from the inside, due to the (apparent) lock linkage breaking on each door.
Locking mechanismboke off inside ofdoor, making itimpossible foroccupants to get out of vehiclein case of anemergencywith both doors.
Child proof locks on both rear passenger doors have broken, causing the doors to become inoperable for exiting the vehicle.consumer states the child locks were never used, consumer states that both rear locks failed within one week of each other.
Latches on both rear doors are broken.
The interior read door latches are not operable from the inside of the vehicle.the rear doors can only be opened from the outside of teh vehicle.there is a child safety mechanism which provides this function, but it is not engaged on either door.it appears that both of the interior door handle mechanisms are defective.i believe that this is a very serious safety issue as a passenger in the rear seats could become trapped with in the vehicle.i have never seen a door handle fail in all my years of driving and working on automobiles, much less two on one vehicle.thank you.
Each ofthe 4 door lock mechanisms (passenger & driver) have broken at one time after 100,000 miles, preventing the occupant of that seat from opening the car door from the inside. Doors could be open from the outside (by rolling the window down and opening it using the outside door handle). The driver's door lock is currently broken - if the driver is inside without keys (keys are necessary to turn on power so the door window can be rolled down), he must then climb over the center console to exit through the passenger door. As mentioned, the driver side door lock is currently non-openable from the inside, but all other doors have had the same defect. There is a neoprene door lock part that breaks after 100,000 miles or so (i would guess), which causes this problem.*nlm
Rear hatchback hinges are buckled, preventing the hatchback from closing. Water gets inside because of the 1 1/2 inch gapin the rear hatchback. Also, exhaust fumes are coming from the rear hatchback.

Hood latch failure at approx.40mph causing hood to release and completely cover windsheild... Totally blocking forward vision.resulted in damage to hood and lower winshield area.($1000.00 +)if this would have happened at highway speed the chance for serious injury would have been great!!!!!fortunately traffic was light at time of incident(approx 6pm on sunday evening) .

For the third time, my '95 ford explorer during normal operation has had the throttle stuck open and accelerate to the point where the truck will not slow down even while applying the brakes. Even when the car has been put into the neutral position the engine continues to rev. I have to throw the truck into park and turn the truck off before the engine will slow down. The first time this happened a few years ago- i had a new transmission put in. The second time this occurred my mechanic told me that there was build-up which caused the throttle to remain open. This is the third time in a year and a half and i am now petrified to drive my once beloved vehicle. I can't possibly imagine selling this car and having this happen to another human being. Luckily, the second time this happened a co-worker was in the truck and i have an eyewitness. Please help me!! i am just a normal hard-working peron that is trying to get this problem fixed and am becoming more frightened by the research i am finding on this subject of the "open throttle".thanks-dani menzel
Driving in light city traffic, "overdrive" indicator light began blinking on and off a few seconds after pulling away from a traffic light, engine raced and wouldn't upshift, then it just coasted to a stop, and wouldn't go anymore.we had to have vehicle flatbedded to a repair shop, and found transmission needed a complete rebuild, which cost about $3,800.
My vehicle will not go in reverse.

The consumer believes that the vehicle undisclosed transmission problem caused the clutch cylinder, slave cylinder, master cylinder and pressure plate to fail multiply times. The clutch and slave cylinder was replaced four times, the mastercylinder was replaced three times, and the pressure plate had gone flat twice due to leaking.the transmission was hard to shift into low gears while in motion intermittently mostly in first and second. *sc

The speedometer/odometer module failed causing the speed to fluctuate erratically and surge when the cruise control was used.nlm

Problems with o/d light flashing, transmission shifts hard.*mr
Had to totally rebuild the transmission, something that should have to be done on such a low mileage car.
One year ago i noticed the overdirve light began flashing on my 1995 ford explorer. I was told by a local mechanic that my transmission had to be rebuilt. We spent $1000 on the repairs. Now, one year later, the overdrive light is flashing again and i'm told that all that is required is to clear the code because explorers do this all the time. I'm hearing from several other owners of explorers that these vehicles have very frequent transmission problems which would indicate a manufacturer defect.
When driving the jeep feels like it lossing power the over drive light on .tt

1995 ford explorer transmission. O/d off light blinking. From the sources on the net it looks as though i will have to junk it. Ford knows this trans is no good. It just started tonight. My wife has heart disease and my have to carry to hospital at anytime now i learn i will have to have a new trans. We are both disabled and bought this for dependability. Now from all the sites i have checked it is a pieces of junk. On the highway it just revs and goes no were that is bad in traffic can cause wrecks. It is not right for fordto know this is junk and not recallthese transmission hopefully u can help all of us with these junk fords. If someone there would get on the net and check out o/d off blinking on ford explorer you will see what i am and others are talking about.
I have had 3 transmission failures on my 1995 ford explorer. I bought it new.the first failure occured just out of warranty.it was rebuilt.the next failure occurred just out of the warranty for the first rebuild.i had a new transmission put in.the third failure is just beginning with the od light flashing and a hard clunk when the auto transmission downshifts into first gear.
Transmission failed.
Transmissionslipped in and out of overdrive while driving. Would have no warning. This causedvehicle to jerk. Problem was not intermittent. Took vehicle to dealership & was informed by mechanic that transmission needed to be replaced.
Have had extensive transmission and transfer case problems with this vehicle. I have replaced the transmission three times.
Ford supposely replaced our transmission in jan. 1999 due to a defect they could not explain, i paid $550.00, the dealer supposely paid $550.00 and ford was warrantying the remainder.the check engine light came on the vehicle 18 dec, 2000 .i told them that the vehicle was not shifting out correctly.so not to damage the vehicle i had it towed to our ford service department.ford installed an ait sensor at a cost of $293.78.the vehicle was ready to pick up on the 19 dec, 2000.due to the weather we did not drive the vehicle for several days, then after about 15 miles the o/d off indicator started flashing.i again called ford.i was told that we could drive the vehicle to the dealership.i talked with fred sizemore, service manager several times about the status of the vehicle.he told me that ford was bringing in a special computer to see if they could find the problem.finally on dec. 29 fred told me that the transmission again was out and that he was talking with ford about the problem.on tuesday, 2 january fred called to tell me that ford would not stand behind the new transmission.the person that fred spoke with said "there comes a time when the consumer has to take responsibility for the vehicle". I spoke with lovia at ford costomer assistance this morning.she advised me that ford had a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty on parts and we had exceeded that.i told her that this was "supposely" a new transmission and that it should have the same warranty as a new transmission.all service on this vehicle has been done at the dealer and we had the records to show that we had paid for the servicing.we can show the amount of money we have spent on this vehicle in maintenance.ford knew when they supposely put in this new transmission that we would again have problems and will not stand behind defective equipment.
While driving 65 mphtransmission quit without prior warning.
They replaced transmission 9/98, 2/99 i'm told i need a new transmission, my vehicle repeatedly loses power when driving, i've also been told that the clicking noise in my engine is a ford defect , but ford tells me i'm not covered because i didn't purchase a warrenty. A 95 ford explorer w/48000miles should not be having these problems. I also have a 91 and 93 explorers, a 73 ford ranchero(with original engine & transmission) and 83 ford conversion van and have never had any problems. This situation has really discouraged me from ever buying another ford product.
While driving onhighway transmission quit working. Vehicle would not moveforward or reverse. Manufacturer has been contacted.
Service bulletin:vehicles produced prior to 6/20/95.premature failure; flashing of transmission overdrive off land.result:stalling. Consequence:needing replacement.
The vehicle has given us good service until may of this year, when a problem developed in the transfer case. An oil pickup tube had broken, the unit had to be disassembled and repaired at a cost of $1304.53. This failure occurred at 72,202 miles and seemed peculiar at the time, but we accepted it as unusual wear at tear. On october 21st we took the car into the shop as the overdrive off light was flashing. The service advisor (jason savidge) called later that day and informed us that the transmission would have to be replaced. This was atotal shock to me as an automobile driver for nearly 60 years. Having ownedmany vehicles (and driven many more) of various manufacturers both foreign and domestic, i have never experienced such failures. I do not abusemy vehicles and have them serviced regularly. As a one time apprentice auto mechanic, a graduate mechanical engineer with 40 years of professional experience i know that properly designed rotating machinery, maintained and not abused will last essentially indefinitely. Ihave retained most of my vehicles for 100,000miles and more without such failures. I noted on your web site a number failures similar to ours, some multiple transmission replacements. I also realize this may not be a safety issue. But what does it take to get the manufacturer to stand behind their product. I contacted the customer service at ford motor co. And received and i am sorry but nothing in our records indicate ford motor co. Should pay or help pay for the transmission replacement.dt
Vehicle takenin for routine transmission oil change; mechanic noticed broken pieces of transmission positraction friction plate. Informed owner bearings needed to be replaced. Took vehicle to transmission shop & informed transmission was missing washers & it was poorly machined, the friction plate.

Driving from san diego to lax airport.1/3 of way there, o/d off light starts flashing, see in manual to contact dealership and to have vehicle checked.call rancho ford in temecula, ca, they said vehicle fine to drive, come in for appointment a few days later.vehicle not in correct gears, rpm awkward, too high, too low.then 1/2 back and hear pop sound, like gunfire, and see smoke coming from under vehicle.past experience with ford tells me not to trust them, so i pull over and call my mechanic.transmission blew cap off and cover undercarriage of car with trans fluid.mechanic said that as long as i did not rev above 2700, i would be okay.made it all the way home.had transmission rebuilt and reinstalled, two weeks later, same symptoms.this time new transmission.then 4 weeks later, problems occur again.take to aamco, and they say needs new torque converter, take to regualr mechanic, says needs new transfer case, take to rancho ford, they don't know what to do, and take to lake elsinore ford, where they run diagnostic, and find nothing is wrong.

Replaced 2nd transmission in october 1998, and 3rd infebruary 2001.consumer felt transmissionswere defective.
The dealer tried to sell me an extended warranty for $1500.00. I did not want it. Less than two months and 3000 miles, the transmission failed...the cost to repair it is $1400.00. To me, this seems oddly coincidental. I have tried to find any manufacturers defects with this transmission. I would appreciate any information concerning this matter.
Check engine light comes on intermittently since approximately 30,000 miles.no cause could be determined by several ford dealerships.at 109,000 miles o/d light began flashing.dealer diagnosed transmission failure and recommended replacement ($2558).5,000 miles later same symptoms appeared (o/d light flashing).dealer diagnosed transmission and pcm failure - replaced transmission under warranty and replaced pcm ($264).5,000 miles after that same symptoms presented themselves (o/d light flashing).dealer diagnosed transmission failure and pcm failure - both replaced under warranty.check engine light continues to present itself intermittently (typically on long drives).summary: 3 transmissions and 2 pcms failed within 12,000 miles.

Rear left door lock - cannot be opened from inside vehicle; 2nd failure; fixed 1st time by dealer at approx 30000 miles;;; transmission failed; o/d blinking; 3 planetary gears busted up;;; bad ground - rt headlight, rt turn signal, and high fan not working properly
Automatic transmission failed (parking pawl) while in parked gear resulting in collision with fence.
The overdrive light comes and will not go off . Please describe .
O/d light began to flash then the transmission went out, ford wants $2,000, so im going through an auto salvage for $845, will never buy ford again, they have a history of problems with there transmission. Of course the transmission went out 2 weeks after my warranty! i got a 1 year warranty for free from them because i had gone to carfax.com and found out that when i bought it from them there was an odometer roll back!
Vehicle exhibited hesitation while shifting, then, the pick up was slow. Six months ago consumer heard a clanking sound at slow speed. Currently, there was delay when shifting to drive and reverse. Also, intermittently vehicle wouldnot shift while driving. Mechanic statedtransmission needed to be replaced.
This is my 3rd transmission. My 1994 explorer had an ireprepairable transmission, so i had to upgrade at my cost to the 1995. In my 1995 i am now faced with replacing my 2nd transmission. So far i have been told the ford factory rep does not talk to the public. For each incident i have at least 2 weeks of "down time" while waiting to have the vehicle repaired. The transmission tech at town & country ford here in charlotte, nc indicates he sees this problem often with the explorers, yet no official recognition from ford. I feel powerless, and at the total mercy of ford. My bmw had 388,000 when i sold it and it never had transmission problems. My vehicle has been properly serviced, yet the ford warranty seems to speak for itself...inadequate. This is apparently due to an inferior, faulty product. Ford needs to do a better job backing up their products, and needs to do a significantly better job responding to a consumer with habitual major problems such as this transmission. How does ford expect to foster repeat business if the message they clearly send is the factory rep is not available to john q public. What the heck is their job description? i know the factory reps from the competing mfg'ers do field questions and issues from the public. I intend to leave ford if this is the best they can do and go to gmc, or a foreign mfg unless i can get some acknowledgement and relief!!!

On my sixth transmission on 1995 ford explorer have a life time warranty from tanner transmission but they will no longer stand behind there warranty because of the transmission being junk.
O/d off light flashed on and off for months. Ford would not admit a problem till it was out of warranty. Rpm's would go up dramatically for a few seconds while going down the road.abs sensor went bad causing unexpected and longer stopping distances at less than 20 mph. Thje abs brakes would kick inon dry pavement at slow speeds when turning and braking at the same time. Almost caused a couple crashes.

The contact owns a 1995 ford explorer. The contact stated while driving, she noticed that the vehicle would "shimmy and shake". Recently, she noticed that the vehicle would not shift into park so she had to use the parking brake to keep it stable. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. Due to the defective computer system, forwhich there is a service bulletin, transmission malfunctioned, causing vehicle tostall while driving. May result inan accident.
This is the second ford motor co replacement transmission to fail. The last one lasted 18,00 miles. Ford motor company informs me that there are over 500 backorders for this replacement transmission. If this is the case then there seems to be a serious problem with ford explorer transmissions. I've been given the run around for two weeks, told today 10/31/02 that it will be another month before i can get a transmission. This is a major problem and ford needs to be held accountable for producing inferior explorer automatic transmissions.thank you,dt
Noise in the transmission was said to be okay by the dealer despite the interior warning light.later, the owners wife experienced an extended downshift with the rpms reaching critical levels without any acceleration.vehicle was manuevered off the road wher it would not move.dealer towed vehicle and informed owner he would need a new transmission.

Od light started flashing at approx. 41,600 mi.was told by dealer listed above that fault codes indicated internal failure and best advice was to replace transmission-replace trans at 41,600 !!!!!!vehicle purchased from private party, great service records provied including transmission service at 41,158 by jackson ford mercury in jackson, ca.
It should be noted that freedom ford is the dealership that provided a $2,772.85 estimate to rebuild the transmission again.we purchased the vehicle from colorado springs jeep/eagle inc.the transmission has failed twice.the first time at 55706 miles, rebuilt at a cost of $2,628.92.now it has failed a second time with an additional 51644 miles on the odometer.this vehicle has been used mostly for highway driving, as i commute a 101 miles each day.it has not been used to tow and has only been used in 4-wheel drive during snow storms.the upkeep and maintenance on the vehicle has never been neglected and there is no reason that the transmission should have failed unless there is a manufacturer defect.i have contacted ford and was told there was nothing they could do to compensate me for the repair costs.i did brief research on the internet and found that this is a problem experienced by many ford explorer owners.there is information that indicates that ford is aware that the transmissions used in these vehicles have design defects, are poor quality and that they have a high failure rate. However, ford has done nothing to compensate their customers.i intend to pursue this situation and i would appreciate any information, assistance or investigative research your organization can provide.thank you for protecting us.
Transmission failed. From park to reverse or drive took 8-10 sec's for it's position. Dealer says nothing wrong. Trans. Specialists charged$2500.00 for rebuilt ford trans.

Automatic transmission overdrive servo seal failed.
I believe this truck was involved in a rollover accident before i purchased it. I think this because of the bad fiberglass work on the roof and bad paint job. I also believe this because of all of the front end problems i have encountered. I believe once this truck is involved in an accident there is no repair to make it safe again. I also wonder if the accident the truck was involved in is related to the tire and rollover recall from ford and firestone.
I own a 1995 ford explorer 4x4. I purchased it new and did not have any problems with thetransmission until last year when i had it flushed. I started to work the next morning and thetransmission began to slip coming out of first gear. I took it into aamco and they told me the transmission needed to be replaced. They also informed me the engine was strong, but the transmission would have to be replaced. I have no problem after it gets to second and third gear. It is really unsafe trying to merged into traffic, because of the hesitation trying to get out of first. If ford knows this is a major problem with this year vehicle, they should at least agree to recall these transmissions. I am sure most people have junked there trucks by name, but i am still hanging in strong 237,000 miles and counting, with the same slipping transmission. If anyone knows a solution to this issue, please let the rest of us know how to rectify our problems with the 1995 ford explorer transmission.

On tuesday january 16, 2001, the o/d off light started flashing while my wife was driving to work. I checked the owners manual for this status and it stated to have the vehicle serviced. I scheduled an appointment with columbiana ford for thursday january 18, 2001. I test drove the vehicle to see if anything felt wrong and all i could determine was the automatic shifting into overdrive was not working. On thursday january 18, 2001, i was shocked by the phone call from the ford dealer. They informed me that while the vehicle was in overdrive a part had broken. During this breakage, they stated that 3rd gear was damaged. The final shock occurred when they stated the repair estimate was $2313.00 for a new transmission. The final bill was for $2484.00. When i inquired about repairing or rebuilding the transmission they stated that it would cost the same as the new one. I called other transmission service companies and they verified the same conclusion as the ford dealer. This vehicle only has 67,000 miles on it and the transmission needed replaced.

Consumer stated the overdrive off indicator light located on the instrument cluster flashed steadily, the vehicle then began braking roughly including a slight grinding sound during braking, consumer is requesting reimbursement for the replacement of the transmission, stating the manufacturer was aware of the transmission defects.
Transmission would slip in & out of overdrive while driving. Would jerk when this happened. Vehicle was controllable, speed was not a factor. Not an intermittent problem. Took vehicle to dealership & was informed that a new transmissionwas required.
Transmission has very hard downshifts which sound as if parts have been left behind.
Consumerhad a rebuilt transmission installed . But encountered the same problem as existed before. There was a humming noise, overdrive light stayed on .
Transmission problems since vehcile was purchased. This wassecond transmission, and itwas a rebuilt transmission. Contacted dealer.
The transmission went out at about 43,000 miles. Dealer is replacing transmission.
The contact owns a 1995 ford explorer.while driving the over-drive warning light will illuminate on the instrument control panel, and then the vehicle will hesitate before decelerating. He contacted the dealer, and a technician stated that this was a common failure for this model type. He then added that the transmission control module and the pcm have failed. The pcm needed to be replaced at an expense of $500.00. No repairs were made. The failure mileage was 55,000. The current mileage was 107,000.
Transmission caught on fire. Consumer stated that when the car is in drive it goes intoneutral and engine revs.
Gear shift failure.
On 12/20/01, i tried to go into 4 wheel drive. Auto 4wd light didn't come on.driving it resulted in noise from underneath the vehicle: groans, loud clunks, severe vibrations, and difficulty steering the vehicle.next both 4wd lights started blinking. On 12/24/01, i took car to dealer.actuator was replaced, which they said was a problem in these cars. Charge was $441.77. I noticed same problem.back to shop on 12/26/01. After 2 days work problem was identified as water getting into the transfer case, contaminating clutches, causing them to stick and grab. Fix was to drain and refill the case. Cost $205.45.he said there was a vent but this would not have allowed for this problem to occur. Problem is less but still present.later, all the while still noticing the vibration, i noticed that both lights would begin to flash.the nhtsa site providedseveral tsb's that seem to deal with the problems: sb# 97314, dated 02/97; sb# bc0206970201, dated 01/97; sb# bc1011297020, dated 01/97.all deal with the transfer case binding or shuddering. Also two tsb's recommending the use of a revised vent tube to prevent water getting into the transfer case: sb# bc0133970201, dated 01/97; and sb# bc1012797020, dated 01/97.dealer was unaware of this procedure and did not suggest doing it on my vehicle.i still have problems with auto 4wd. The dealer has replaced a speed sensor, eliminating the flashing lights.bill is now $700 and not fixed the problem, known since 1997. Nobody bothered to tell me to have my transfer case fluid checked or the vent tube changed.dealer even told me that they normally would not check for this and that i should take it upon myself. Since this problem appears to be due to an inherent design flaw and has been known by ford since 1997, within my warranty period, i called ford customer service and asked for problem be fixed without cost to me. They knew of the problem and the repairs but refused to help since its out of warranty.

I have a 1995 explorer that has had a major problem with the automatic transmission with only 42000 miles it was taken to the dealer and was told that it needed a rebuld.. But to my dismay to find out that it had premature wear on the torque converter and on the servo piston.. I know that this is an on going problem with ford explorer transmissions, i hope that something will be done about it cause as a consumer it is very frustrating knowing that many people have put in 3 or 4 transmissions before 100,000 miles.. Clutch hydraulic slave cylinder failed 3 times, but vehicle not driven off road or harshly. Most mileage has been high speed use over interstate highways from here to florida or northeast pennsylvania, without excessive shifting. First failure, 12/31/97, i was told slave cylinder failed when clutch pedal went to floor after a reported prolonged period of squealing. The squealing occurred as clutch pedal was being depressed. Dealer repaired it, sharing the cost, since it was only after 2/12 years old. Second failure, 03/04/98 after squealing noise again developed. Clutch assembly rebuilt. Subsequently, at each service visit, i reported the return of the squealing that preceded other hydraulic failure. 01/21/99 slave cyl. Failed again. I learned from the service manager that he had a nhtsa tech. Service bulletin, bc2301970501, in his possession since nov. Of 1997, preceeding the first clutch failure. This tsb advised replacing the slave cylinder lip seal with a newly designed one. The dealer did not do this the two times he replaced the slave cylinder, now it's failed again, and leaks. Who knows if it will fail again while driving, causing a loss of control? thank you for your time and assistance.

Driver's side seat-belt latch seems to have failed due to the spring mechanism.first, the belt would detach without warning (while driving) and then difficult to latch at all.seems to be similar to other complaints found on your web vrtc-dcd2038 (ea02-011)i called ford customer service (worthless - but they did confirm my car was manf. In april 1995 which seems to track with the batch of springs which have failed in other complaints.)my issue is that, even though the seat belt now is unlatchable, before it had spurious "unlatchings" while driving, leading one to suspect maybe i didn't latch it completely - so in an accident, not knowing this is a potential defect of this year of this component at time of manf., in an accident, the failure could have catastrophic effects of death and injury due to the failure of this primary safety restraint system.it seems a known potential issue with these specific date/components.why wouldn't ford at least inspect them and avoid this????

Service brakes, hydraulicdetails: i took my 95 explorer in for a recall (09s09) for a speed control deactivation switch which may pose a risk of fire if it leaked. When i got my veh. Back i looked under the hood to check their work. (i am a mechanic my self by occupation) they had replaced the pigtail to the switch but not the switch itself. The letter talked about the switch and not a pigtail leaking brake fluid. The switch is mounted on the master cly.above the exhaust manifold area. The recall intent was to have ford replace the pigtail and switch or the switch but only if the switch was leaking. The service manager would not give me any explanation. Is ford changing the wrong part. I am not sure how the pig tail will stop the brake fluid from leaking.
I am wirting because there are several recalls on my vehicle howerver i was told that the recalls are vin specific. Meaning that even though my vehicle is experianceing the same problems of cars that have been recalled of the same make model and model year the manufacture is not required to correct the defect. I have a problem witth that because it places the public at risk. In my case i have a 1995 ford explorer. The vehicle has been recalled for problems with the tie rods, sway bar links, and brakes. All issues that are saftey related. I have talked with other owners with the same car that have the excat issues. Obviously the problem is systemic and places the public at risk as this was one of the best selling models of that year. I am asking that you issue a recall all vehicles of this make and model for that year. This would alleviate the saftey risk casued by the defect. I believe that your office and the manufacture should take reasonable steps to adress the issue and act in the publics interest. Please contact me.
I took my 95 explorer in for a recall (09s09) for a speed control deactivation switch which may pose a risk of fire if it leaked. When i got my veh. Back i looked under the hood to check their work. (i am a mechanic my self by occupation) they had replaced the pigtail to the switch but not the switch itself.when i talked to the service manager about it he stated that the pigtail was the fire hazardand they only relocated the switch if it was leaking at the time of the recall. The letter talked about the switch and not a pigtail leaking brake fluid.the switch is mounted on the master cly.above the exhaust manifold area.was your recall intent to have ford replace the pigtail and switch or the pigtail and the switch but only if the switch was leaking. I will be waiting your reply thank you for your time.

On saturday, august 21, 2004 i pulled out of my driveway and attempted to apply my brakes.the brakes went to the floor with very little resistance.i continued driving about 100 ft and noticed the brake light had come on.i thought it might be the emergency brake.it wasn't.within 10 seconds of noticing the brake light i attemted to stop.after about a minute of applying the brakes, i stopped.i applied the emergency brake and decided to open the hood to see if the brake reservoir was empty.it was 3/4 low.i went back to the house and brought back a can of dot 3-4 brake fluid.i filled the reservoir to the proper level.i got back into the car and started the vehicle.i again pressed on the brake pedal and again the pedal went to the floor.i used the steering wheel to turn the tires to the far right and then to the far left.i looked behind both front wheels to see if there was any visible signs of brake fluid leaking.there was none.i decided to chock the back tires buy placing a large tree log behind each rear tire.i then crawled under the rear area of the vehicle and noticed dripping brake fluid coming from above the transaxle (rearend).i placed my hand above and felt the hydraulic line and felt a large amount of corrosion on the brake line.i am sending the vehicle to parkway auto repair on wednesday, august 25, 2004.if you would like to see pictures or the actual brake line after it is removed, please let me know.no crash or injuries occurred from this equipment failure.

The steering column and all the parts associated with the steering of the vehicle were affected when the bolts that hold the clamps that secure the bushings to the steering column began to loosen. I examined the area carefully and noticed that because the bolts loosened, the clamps were given too much play. Within a short while, a month or two, the entire steering column and the shifter were completely secured by one broken clamp that held its place because of the bushings and a loose bolt. The other clamp was also broken but was laying on the floor board. It wasn't an expensive fix. I customized a metal clamp for each of the two places the went. They are the same clamps the electricians use to secure cables and wires to the walls and ceilings. I used the ones made from bronze. They are more pliable to shape for an almost perfect fit. With a little grease above and below the bushings and also some where the now bronze clamps hold the bushings, i believe that the steering column is as safe as can be. Also, the plastic that holds the cable that is used to adjust the shift indicator needs to be made of a different material. I'll get to that soon.

Our 1995 ford explorer was parked on the side of our garage, well off a quiet street. When we came out in the morning to go to work we discovered that the back liftgate window exploded. Thankfully, this happened when it was parked. It would have potentially caused a major accident if we had been driving alone or with our children or friends. As we had talked with neighbors and called to get estimates weheard about this happening four times to other people. This was a definite safety issue and it should be recalled. As i filled out the questions below i am also so thankful that i did not have to type in a number other than 0 for number of deaths or injuries. Please notify us immediately if/when you decide that this was a serious danger to your buyers and will help correct and replace this default. Thank you.

While driving at a low speed vehicle shimmies andshakes.it is noticedmore at low speeds. Also, when it's windy outsideconsumer doesn't have a lot of control of the steering wheel.

On june 7, 2003the right side torsion bar broke collapsing the frame onto the right front tire.a metal inspector has inspected the part and indicated that it is a manufacturing defect.i went to my ford dealer, the parts manager at the dealership said too bad it happened now because my car is a 1995 and the warranty is up with no coverage for replacing this part.we will need to purchase both the right hand part as well as the left hand part #s f57a-bc rub & f57a-bc lub and have them installed.i can send pictures of the defective part.
The actual date and mileage is unknown. I just discovered the problem last week.both link pins that connect the front sway bar to the wheel assembly were missing.with the sway bar disconnected, the car sways severly in cornering or hard manuevers.i had the pins replaced at my expense.i contacted ford and they had issued a customer notification on 6 nov 2000 #00m11 that identified the (link pins breaking)problem for 1996-1997 ford explorers.however, the limit for mileage for ford to replace the parts was 100,000.i had at the time of discovery 102500 miles on the car.this problem, i believe, occured back in the summer because i started getting a lot sway on cornering.i figured that the shocks were bad do had them replaced in about september 2000.this didn't solve the sway problem.last week i was changing my oil and noticed that the sway bar was loose.after replacing the link pins my sway problem went away.i contacted ford customer relations, mellanie hall, and relayed my problem.i was told that ford would not pay for the repairs since my car was 2500 miles past their limit.i believe that this is a safety issue and may have been a contributing problem to the tire problem causing roll overs.this car, with out the sway bar attached, would definitely be unstable in hard turns and i am convinced that it could lead to a roll over.mellanie hall for ford, did not agree. I believe that this time of failure should be added to your investigation on tires and roll overs.i also believe that this should be safety recall and not be limited to a certain number of miles, consequently i should be reimbursed.

One of originally installed 16 " firestone wilderness at tires in ford explore blew out prematuarly when we were driving on the south-bound of i-95 at conneticut on may 10, 1999. Fortunately, no accident was involved and no one was injured. We just replaced brocken tire to a new one at nearby tire shop. I have not reported to anyone then. This tire failure was obviously premature tire failure, which is the same to the one currently recalled on firestone tires. I brought the car for inspection at a ford dealer in virginia in late august, but they rejected to replace it since this is 16 inch tire and only 15 inch tires were recalled then. I am reporting that 16 inch tires of this tiye are also in danger as we experienced and those shall be recalled immediately to avoid future accidents. ( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

I identified the defective tires before they failed. 95% of each tire was like new, but the inside tread was warn down to the steel belts. I contacted ford, but they said the only thing they would do was look at it. I already knew there was a problem and declined their offer to "look at it!" after going through three sets of front tires in 75,000 miles, i convinced my front end alighment mechanic to set the angle of the alignment so that the tops of the tires were out 1/4 inch. This seems to have stopped the problem. I beleive that this was a design defect that was compounded by a flawed alignment specification. I'm sure that i would have experienced a blowout, if i had not performed my own oil changes and kept such a close eye on the tire wear.( dot number: tire size: p22570r15 )

On may 9, 1998 my husband and i purchased a used 1995 ford explorer from hooks ford in granbury. At the time of purchase my husband commented on one of the tires. The salesman assured us he would have the service dept. Check the tires. After merely "rotating" the tires, they declared it safe. Three days later, may 12, 1998 while driving home to austin, the rear driver's side tire blew out and caused the vehicle to flip over and roll 5 1/2 times. A four year-old child was thrown through a window and survived. A second child restrained in a car seat was physically unharmed. The driver, myself, remained in the vehicle as it rolled but my seat belt failed and i sustained a compression fracture of my neck, laceration of my head and ear, and went into a coma. We reported the incident to the dealership and to ford and never heard back from either. We consulted an attorney and because we no longer "had" the vehicle in hand, he couldn't prove anything. My husband was following the explorer in a u-haul and watched the entire incident. This accident changed my life, as i sustained permenant injuries. Our family was devistated. If there is every a class action suit or anything we could do to prevent another family from enduring what we went through. Please let us know! we do have pictures from the accident and proof i was wearing my seat belt, which failed. We do have a photo of the tire that blew, causing the wreck.

This report relates to the current tire problems with ford explorer vehicles.my previous letter to nhtsa is dated 13 may 1997. You need to go back and reread this letter. Ford motor company is deliberately and flagrantly putting incorrect tire pressure labels into all ford explorer trucks. The reason is that the truck "rides better" with lower tire pressure (26 pounds). Fords own mechanics will tell you that you need at least 35 pounds of air pressure to avoid premature tire wear.then when you go back to ford and try to get them to replace your damaged tires (if they don't fail first), they "stonewall" all your letters and phone calls. Trust me, because i went thru the whole process and got no where with ford.they don't care about premature tire wear or damaged/unsafe tires, they just want a nice soft ride in order to keep selling ford explorer trucks. If you put the proper air pressure into the tires (35 pounds), the truck rides hard and rough due to the suspension system. You folks need to check this out, ford is literally getting away with murder here.arj
On april 20, 1999 i had my 45,00 mile service performed at a local ford dealership in dallas, tx on our '95 ford explorer xlt.during that service visit the technician noted the steel core exposed on the left rear tire; after close examination of the defective tires it was noted that it appeared that the tire had blistered and burst the outer core.since this was well before (16 months ago) the firestone axt recall our only recourse was to place the tire(s).in a effort to not put myself or family at risk we elected to "bit- the-bullet" and purchased a complete set of new michelin tires at sam's wholesale store.i wish to be reimbursed along with the other customers who are offered replacement tires or being reimbursed for tires purchased after january 1, 2000.i feel that i was was victimized by firestone's misjudgment, but unfortunately at this time do not fall within there 'specified window' of replacement or reimbursement policy guidelines.any help you can provide me would be appreciated.i have contacted both ford motor company and bridgestone-firestone and have been passed on from phone number to phone number to no avail.i am very frustrated with both ford & firestone as to how they have handled this unfortunate situation with the general public as well as myself.(tiresize: p235-75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235-75r15 )

We suffered a sudden tire failure on the left rear wheel while traveling northbound on i10 between tucson and phoenix and towing a 1970 vw beetle.just prior to the tire failure, i felt something was not right, so i stopped the vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate and inspected the hitch, the vw beetle and the rear tires on my explorer and found nothing of concern.as i was getting back up to speed, the tire tread on the rear left tire came totally off and the explorer felt like i was driving on ice, essentially no steering without danger of losing control.i stabilized the vehilcle but it gradually slide to the left and i sensed that if i tried to correct the car would go out of control. Fortunately, i was in the right lane on a two lane highway with no one around but i the car gradually move to the left slowing slowly; when the beetle caught the shoulder gravel we launched into to a roll over.we rolled twice and landed upright and the treadless tire was still inflated.towing the beetle provided a substantial amount of drag slowing both vehicles lessening the severity of the explorer's roll. When the beetle broke loose during the roll it took a lot of momentum with it as it rolled much further than the explorer causing the explorer to hit on both roof edges on subsequent rolls and landing on the tires without the airbags deploying; both passenger were wearing seatbelts and despite sprains, bruises and scratches we walked away from the accident.however, both cars were totaled and contents damaged and lost.a few weeks before this, i had the front tire develop a severe bump and took it to my local firestone dealer and bought new front tire and asked them to check the rear tires which still had plenty of tread depth which by the way the front tire that developed the bump also had plenty of tread left.firestone dealer assured me the back tires did not need replacing.( dot number: )

We don't have the recall tires or a problem on our vehicle. But, rather suspect tread separation being caused by anti-lock braking system and disk breaks on all 4 wheels. This can cause more breaking/shear stress on the tread over time. Running at high-speed doesn't simulate breaking, particularly in heavy stop-go commuting which many vehicles are now being used for. Then when they are taken on long high-speed drives, the weakened tread is subject to failure. Testing should include anti-lock brake surging tests and radial break-load simulation.( dot number: )

Abs failure on both of my '95 fords.. A windstar and an explorer.in both of the cars the abs loses the ability to work properly. At all brake applications to very, very quickly alternates braking b/w wheels essentially it interferes with the braking of the car..remedy is to disconnect the abs. Since 1997, vehicle has had problems with the check engine light.response from ford was that due to the large number of sensors that activate the light, it would be impossible to tell what was setting it off.then told ford to run pcm diagnostic test to obtain codes, didn;tknow what i was talking about.finally got them to do it, and it came up with faulty o2 sensor.replaced sensor, and problem persisted.went back, ran test, came back with same results.ford has been no help, contacted ford, said not safety related, therefore not their problem.will never buy a ford again.

Purchased vehicle from private seller. I asked the seller why the o/d light off was flashing on the dash. He said he had no experience with engines and he didn't know what it was for. The next day, i was checking all fluids and levels. Anyway, i look in the transmission filling area and noticed the level was waaayyy past full (above crossbar area); i see that there is only milky-pink like substance in it.from all the research i have done already, i think the pink substance is a mixture of transmission fluid and anti-freeze. I have not had a chance (or the money) to know exactly what is wrong with it, but i do know that anti-freeze is not supposed to be in the transmission fluid area(s). My guess is that the problem was caused by an internal failure in the radiator cooling line.i believe that ford should recall these transmissions because they know it is a major problem. Please, is there anyone that has already started a class-action lawsuit on ford because of this matter? knowing that they are selling (or sold) a defective product to hundreds of thousands of customers.this has to be a manufacturer issue! the consumer should not be responsible for this issue.

This is a complaint about ford's recall process. I recently received a safety recall notice regarding a fire hazard. I have not owned my 1995 explorer for at least five years. When i called the number listed in the recall notice i got a department at ford - the man said they contract out their recalls to a third party and that he could not help me, nor could he give me their number. He said the company gets owner information by using the dmv. If they had done that they would know i have not owned this vehicle in many years.this recall notice was about a fire hazard and obviously will not get to the person who may now own the vehicle, so it isn't a very effective recall. The third party company who is doing this for ford is not doing a very good job on something as critical as a safety recall.

I also double checked the cruise control and it was in fact off and tried to pump the gas to see if the pedal was stuck but neither worked.when the vehicle reached approximately 85 mph i attempted to shift into neutral when the vehicle skidded out of control.the skid mark was about 350 feet long and then the explorer left the road and rolled a few times until it came to a stop on the driver's side with the engine still roaring.the engine only stopped when passenger turned off the ignition key since the driver was unconscious.

I have a 1995 ford explorer the windows work sometimes you mit drive a block than thay don'tand the 4/4 will the same thing . My son has 1995 explorer it will do the same thing is there a recall if not ther shough be thank you .
I have experienced an under the hood fire on my 1995 ford explorer which i believe was caused by a faulty speed control deactivation switch.my vehicle had begun to exhibit symptoms which have been described in relation to recall campaign number 05v388000.specifically, the cruise control had stopped functioning, brake fluid was leaking around the switch and my vehicle had started blowing fuses.on october 29th my fiance drove the vehicle to work.shortly after having arrived at work, someone interrupted a meeting she was having with her supervisor to inform her that her vehicle was on fire.the fire was quickly extinguished and the vehicle was not a total loss.in fact, the damage looks relatively minor to me.however the local ford dealership has given me an estimate for repairs in the amount of $12860.02.i have researched and determined that the switch for my explorer is the exact same switch as is used on the 1995 ford f-150, which is the subject of a recall for this very issue.the part number in question for the explorer is f3tz9f924bb.the part number for the f-150 is f3tz9f924b.a parts sales person at the ford dealership has informed me that these parts are identical and has faxed me information to prove this.i also have very good photographs of the damage, as well as the vehicle.the vehicle has not been touched since the fire other than to be towed to the dealership.i believe the estimate for repairs is based on a visual inspection.the fire department was called, so there may be an official report available.

Windshield washer will not spray fluid on the windshield unless it's pushed hard repeatedly, also the windshield wipers come on for no apparent reason.
Washer function only intermittently. Wipers often stop or work at arbitrary, intermittent speeds. Dealer said they fixed it but it stopped working shortly thereafter. Didn't have the energy to argue with them. This problem has been going onn since about a year after car was purchased. I saw a news article aboput the problem and thought i would contribute another report. Thanks!
Windshield defect causing poor visibility in line of vision, replacement of windshield & wiper arm did not correct the problem.
