My 93 ford explorer had approximately 3 diagnostic tests with results that show there is nothing wrong with it. The vehical consistently over 7 months has been stalling, dieing, and surging. It usually stalls at stop signs or while waiting in a lines of cars. It dies at stop signs or when trying to start it up. It surges while driving on the freeway and feels like a tugging motion. The rpms and amps go way down and feels like it may stall then it surges and gets power. When it gets power it almost jumps forward and hits the car in front while my foot is still on the break. It also jumps around at stop signs with the rpms and amps going up and down. Mossey ford in san diego, ca has replaced the oil and filter and the fuel pressure regulator. They said it would take car of the problem and it did not. The problem became more dominant, persistent, and dangerous. This work cost approximately $300.00, so due to high cost at ford. I took the vehical to greg's automotive in el cajon, ca. I then replaced the battery and was charged uselessly for finding no problems. At this point, i spend about $400.00 more dollars for nothing. They had a hunch that it may have been the timing belt, but i would have to pay $600.00 just for them to check. I have been spending hard earned money uselessly and disregarding my bills for my vehical not being fixed. I am scared for my safety and other's safety while driving the explorer under these unfixable conditions. I need help and high quality service to pin point the exact problem. I depend on my vehical and must use it to get me places i have to go. My ford vehical is stalling, dieing, and surging. This is not safe and ford should deal with this problem by recalling vehicals with these type of complaints.

1st case was summer time, engine wouldn't even turn over when trying to start it. Air conditioner had been on earlier. Turned the air conditioner switch to off and engine started and ran just fine.attributed the problem to bad compressor loading down the engine. $900 later with new compressor andconversion to new refrigerant i assumed everything was fixed. Truck is 2nd vehicle not used much until winter. December while driving at night, i accidentally pushed the heater switch in, (air-conditioner on mode) and the engine instantly shut off, as well as all the lights and the horn.reset the switch and once again everything was fine. Never blew a fuse! expected a wire harness fire after that! i'd expect the load line to the compressor to be on a separate circuit and isolated by a fuse link or replaceable fuse! replaced the $95 switch and inspected it. It was all melted inside.i wonder if the switch was the original problem and the compressor was actually good since the air was cold when it was running. Could it go from good to instantly seized? could the circuitry in the explorer sport allow a large current draw to melt the switch? if so ford owes me for the compressor and labor. Can't understand why a fuselink or fuse didn't blow. Only a dead short would knock out the lights, and horn. Luckily the switch could be switched off, as i rolled to a stop. Second item to report was that while replacing the badresistor coils for fan's speed control, the heater enclosure was packed with leaves- very dangerous. Vacuumed everything out. Need to find out why there is no screen somewhere.

I was pulling into my condo's parking garage when driver in car behind me alerted me that my truck was on fire.i stopped immediately and noticed smoke and a burning smell inside of the vehicle and my feet got really hot.exited vehicle and noticed fire dripping from underneath vehicle and black smoke and fire from under the hood.immediately called 911 to report fire, as the fire unit was on its way the vehicle had two or three explosions under the hood and the horn came on.the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.it was a total loss. The 22 story condominium fire alarms went off, all the elevators stopped working and the fire marshall evacuated the entire building.the parking garage was full of sooth and dense black smoke. The main lobby and elevator lobby was full of smoke. The er diagnosed me with smoke inhalation and shortness of breath.subsequent lung test shows 30% decreased lung capacity.

This is one of two explorers on which the same component failed. I had the guage replaced at the date and mileage noted, but it failed long before that date.i find it hard to believe i was unlucky enough to get two bad temperature guages.especially since a friend told him he had to replace the guage on his 1997 explorer.

The truck has a known design flaw causing the truck to vibrate excessively between 52 and 67 mph.the dealer graham ford in dickson looked at the truck and will only repair the truck if i buy the service kit and pay labor.the service manager informed me this was a known defect and that they had to buy back a truck they sold new on one occasion.ford is aware of the problem and even supplied this dealer a kit while under development to see if fixed this problem.this vibration causes the truck to becom difficult to control while drive in the about speed ranges.

She had to be transported to the hospital. The vehicle was completely destroyed. The failure and current mileages were a little over 200,000.

Oil filter replaced 4 times/engine overhauled due to large oil consumption, also exhaust system replaced due to oil entering pipe/noise.

Results in oil leak which could lead to fire as well as a source of pollution.ford motor company does not have any replacementvalve covers on hand.howcan a company of this size get away with selling as many of these vehicles as they have and nothave replacement parts available to there customers?

Premature head gasket failure is apparently a common ford problem.this head gasket blew at only 70,000 miles on a 6-year old vehicle.this is too early for this type of problem to happen.it could be a fluke, but there are internet sites about ford vehicles with this same problem.repairs are very costly for parts that shouldn't have gone bad in the first place.this vehicle was not ever driven roughly or put under unusual stress--just city driving.i think that there is a real problem with ford head gaskets that should be investigated.thank you.

The engine mounts are defective. The truck shakes and a thumping sound is heard

I bought a car from a dealer and have the car for less than 30 days and the transmission is going out. The dealer would not give me a temporary tag unless i went to his mechanic for a inspection also the vehicle has been constantly leaking oil since the 2nd day i purchased.

Wantagh ford, the servicing dealer has advised me that there is internal engine wear/ low oil pressure, and that i needed a new engine.

The engine, regardless of speed or driving conditionsshuts off and creates a dangerous situation when it occurs in the middle of traffic.the lights, horn, flasher function ,but the engine just cranks without starting sometime 5 minutes, sometimes one or more hours blocking traffic lanes. Aaa has towed to garages a couple of times and when the mechanics turn the key, the car starts right up and a diagnostic cannot be performed.i do not wish to be a victim in an accident with any vehicle before ford decides to investigate this failure that is becoming more frequent. We have had continuous problems w/ our 93 explorer.the transmission went out at 93000 miles and had to be replaced.the abs light keeps flickering on and off and we are not sure which sensor is out.the dealership wants to charge an arm & leg just to tell us which sensor it is.my experience with the dealerships havenot been positive.they charge too much for simple tasks and i have been lied to on numerous occasions about what is wrong with our vehicle.it idles rough and we have replaced all of the parts the dealership has said were bad and it still idles real rough.we have spent more on auto repairs than what the vehicle is worth.the air conditioner recently went out, the blower motor was replaced, now they are telling us it is the fan switch - somebody needs to give ford motor company a swift kick.i will never buy another ford vehicle as long as i live.it seems that foreign vehicles are worth the few extra bucks in the long run.

This is in response to you ongoing investigation...nhtsa action number: pe99072 make: ford truck model: explorer year: 1993 component: structure manufacturer: ford motor company date investigation opened: tue, november 30, 1999 summary: spare tire winch cable.the spare tire winch cable had deteriorated to just one small wire holding up the tire. I had the spare tire changed and the mech. Said that i should get a new winch. Ford was happy to sell me one at $70, they had them right in stock, since i guess they fail all the time. Mine did not actually fail but was very close to it. The wire was broken/rotted just above the piece that is crimped on to hold the piece that goes in the center of the spare tire.

Ea0012; spare tire winch cable: whiledriving about 65 mph spare tire fell off the explorer, which caused a crash. Dealership and ford were called about the problem. Cable the holds the tire snapped/ broke.repairs will be made at owner's expense. Please provide any further information.

While driving about 60 mphspare tire cable broke and tire bounced on a slow road with not much traffic at the moment. Consumer found out that cable did break due to corrosion.the spare tire, which was secured under the vehicle by a cable with a large wing nut, dropped on the road because the wing nuts were breaking off due to aging.

The spare tire crank wire frayed and broke releasing the spare tire on to the road.ford motor owner relations was contacted at 1-800-392-3673 and informed of the problem.they indicated that there is no recall on this device.this is extremely dangerous since when the wire fails the tire releases on to the road.please investigate as soon as possible.thank you.

Copy of notice sent to ford motor co on 10/10/2001 -- > urgent i replaced my 5 firestone tires, and almost lost my spare because the 1/8" inch cable that holds the spare up rotted through. Fortunately it fell off in my driveway, and not while driving home from the tire dealer oninterstate 87!-- end of message to ford. I am surprised that this1/8" cable that has no protection from corrosion, is the sole method used to hold the spare in place!this problem probably exists in many other older explorers... And if you never need the spare... You might not find out until someone behind you gets injured!

The cable that holds spare tire cracked & broke, falling from under vehicle into the highway crossing onto uncoming traffic. Manufacturer saidthe vehicle is out of warranty.

This seems to be a major problem with this vehicle. I do all my own servicing and as indicated this is the 5 failure. Indications are speed control does not suspend and the exterior brake lights do not illuminate. In every case i have disassembled the device and the electrical contacts are pitted and deformed from usage. Also appears to be indications that the internal workings of the switch has been evolving, i suspect due to usage related failure.

Cruise control:1993 ford explorer- while traveling on the highway, i had my cruise control on. As i approached another vehicle from behind, i put my foot on the brake pedal to deactivate the cruise control. The control did not deactivate, and i had to push the "off" button on the steering wheel to gain control. This isn't an isolated incident, this has happened to me on 3 other occasions. Also when this switch goes bad, it is apparently tied into the rear brake lights, as they don't work when it goes out. On all occasions when this switch goes out, i have taken it to a ford dealer(ross ford- piedmont, mo.) to have it repaired, so it should be documented. I feel this is a safety hazard that should be investigated.*la

Total failure of emergency parking brake - went to apply brake and the pedal went all the way to the floor without engaging brake; repeated attempts unsuccessful - the vehicle when stopped can only be kept from moving by the foot brake, or placing the vehicle in gear. This defect is the subject of prior recall (nhtsa campaign id 94v169000) covering the same failure. This recall work was completed on my vehicle in 1994. Both before and after the recall work was done, my vehicle experienced the intermittent failure of the parking brake to engage, but releasing the pedal and re-applying would always work. Now, there has been a complete failure of the pedal system and ford & the dealer indicate that this is not covered by the above-referenced recall since the work was already done. This failure is a safety hazard!

Car was parked with engine running on my residential driveway in park.i got out of the car to briefly go into the house to get my son.i walked from the car into the garage, and was about to enter the house through the door inside the garage when i saw the car rolling into the garage.i tried to get into the car to apply the brakes, but the car hit the water heater.the water heater was moved off its base and into the wall.damage to the water heater, garage wall and interior utility room wall occured as well as damage to my explorer.i have tried on many occasions to duplicate the condition but cannot.it is impossible for me to put the car into drive and get out without the car immediately rolling forward.the driveway has a slope going away from the garage and yet it still immediately rolls forward.in fact, it rolls forward faster than i can walk at a normal pace.however, i had walked approximately 40 feet when i noticed it coming to me the day of the incident.i've tried to duplicate this with both a cold and warm engine, but cannot.in other words, it always rolls forward as soon as i release the brake while in drive.this shows me that i couldn't have left it in drive.if i would have left it in reverse or neutral, it would have gone backward.i left it in park, but somehow it went forward, after i left the car and walked some distance.i've contacted ford motor and they say they can't do anything about it unless my insurance company files a complaint with them.apparently my insurance company is not interested in doing so.meanwhile i am out 2 deductibles (auto and home) and bewildered as to how this happened and concerned if it will happen again to me or someone else with more severe results.

Re: front hub assembly: failed infirst year of ownership and was replaced by ford.second failure this year.although my car has a lot of miles on it i only rarely use 4 wheel drive.i would estimate about 1000-2000 miles of 4 wheel drive running time.danger involves not being in 4 wheel drive when you think you are.second concern: car has occasionally stalledwhile driving and running perfectly fine and will restart after 20 -30 seconds. Happens in warm weather after car is warm.seems similar to california court mandated recall issue but ford denied any relationship.danger is car may stall when pulling into traffic.

Manual transmission failure.

The input shaft broke, causing the transmission to fail and the slave cylinderto melt.

Transmission plate rubber plugs allowed transmission fluid to leak rapidly from the casing while driving a long distance on the highway. The vehicle lost power and the transmission parts and case were "melted" due to the heat caused by the friction of the parts. Mechanics agree that this is a very common design flaw in the ford transmission. If ford would have used a better sealing surface for the plugs, then this would not have happened. Ford no longer manufacturs these transmissions.

Manufacturer closed the recall case and will not perform repair according to the dealer. *la the service dealer had inspected the rear lift gate and said that the repair was subject of a recall that ford issued.recall#95v164001 *scthe consumer stated the paper work stated the repair had been performed when it had not been, because the first time the consumer was at the dealership, due to time constraints the consumer was unable to leave the vehicle.

Hatchback cylinder broke and fell on owner's wife . The door was hanging off on one side. Owner has notified the dealerand manufacturer.

Recall 99v310000/ hydraulic lift cylinders. Parts needed to perform recall repairs were not available.

The insulation blanket under vehicle's hood deteriorated andfell down into the engine compartment. I have been pealing away the hanging down material periodically, however my concern is that material may fall apart, falling upon the engine and possibly causing a fire.

Rear tailgate lift clinder mounting bracket weld failed on passenger side.the weld that broke was from lift cylinder bracket to tailgate.tailgate will now no longer stay open on its own.

Liftgate welds broke.recalled by ford, however only for vehicles manufactured from jan 1992 to mar 1993.my vehicle was manufactured 5/26/93.ford refuses to repair.claiming vehicle does not qualify due to manufacture date.

Rear lift gate hinge (window hinge only) failed.hinge snapped in such a manner that indicates casting was likely bad at time of manufacture or that design is faulty.

Tailgate hinge torn loose at weld.

The brackets on the liftgate broke off completely. Dealer will not fix because the car exceeded mileage.

The weld failed due to manufacture defect under normal use.this failure should be repaired at the cost of the manufacture with no limitations to mileage or years on the road.

Both rear rocker panels were rusted out.the body has a 6 year warranty against rust, but the rust was not noticed until the side skirts over the rocker panels were knocked off.when i called ford, they stated there was nothing they could do, because the vehicle was over 6 years old.the rust was bad enough , that it had to be developing well within the 6 year time frame.

Rusting, rear quater panel, around gas cap(inside and out.)filler tube could come lose. Know of 30 vechicals 1993-1994 with this problem. Could become a gas filling problem. Clarke ford in hudson, ohio " the car is 5 years old, we dont care." called ford service 1-800-392-ford, and they said they would look into it. Also ford said if i repair it, save all reciepts incase of recall.

Suspension defect, causing extreme vibration while driving.

Consumer was driving approximately 35mph when crashed into a gaurdrail. Mechanic replaced fender/bumper/radiator/grill/ radialand radial support/ball join, and installed lift kit. However, vehicle still vibrated, even more when driving with 4 wheel drive. Also, when making a turn steering locked up in 4 wheel drive. Consumer then replaced all four tires. Vehicle still vibrated. Mechanic said the radius arm was bent, and replaced it. Also, replaced the springs shocks/ abs sensors/ rear shield and bearings.

Faulty suspension caused shimmy/vibration in vehicle while driving, consumer hasbalanced and rotated the tires 4 times, replaced radius arm bushing, alignment, replaced inner and outer bearings, replaced shocks and replaced the goodyear tires, the consumer later found out about tsb 960415a, the dealer refuses to fix the problem at their expense.

While car poolingon the highwayheard a boom. Then vehicle started to wobble. Consumer thought it was a flat tire, but then lost control andvehicle flipped 3 times. The only thing that was left was the axle. Vehicle flipped over 3 times before coming to a stop. Consumer felt this was a serious defect, andwere lucky that they weren't killeed. Police told consumer that the whole rim and tire had come off.

Vehicle rolled over during vehicle collision.

While driving on highway on a 7 hour trip there wasvery bad vibration. Replaced two tires on fronts, didn't solve the problem.contacted dealer, and they saidshaking problem was with the 1993 vehicles.needed to install motor mounts brackets and shock absorbers on the rear.not under warranty will not repair.

The entire automobile shakes when driving above 55 mph, and dealer will not do anything about.the consumer stated that the manufacturer has a modification kit for shake, but refuses to pay for it.

The vehicle floor and steering wheel vibrates excessively at 55-65 mph.assumed to be "aftershake" addressed in tsb #94-2-20 (nhtsa#sb035605).

While driving at 60 mph, the vehicle vibrates, causing lack of control.please provide any details.

The problem first displayed itself at 8000 miles, i contacted the dealer and was told to bring it in. On 7/14/93 they did a front end alignment. When i picked it up i questioned the unusual tire wear on the front, they told me there was nothing they could do, about this.this condition persisted and i again contacted the dealer and was told to bring it inon 10/19/193.they performed another front end alignment and rotated the tires due to the exterme wear. The problem continued i again called the dealer and was advised to bring it in on 2/11/94 at which time another realignment was performed and a part replaced. The problem only became worse i again contacted the dealer and was stalled repeatedly. In desperation i contacted the ford rep in atlanta (matt darnell) and requested his assistance. Again i was stalled almost ignored, the problem became so bad while waiting for mr. Darnell that i was forced to take it to firestone who performed another front end alignment and rebalanced the tires. The tires were worn so badly by this time , the damage had been done. There were other repairs made to this vehicle by claxton lawrence ford who at one point refused to repair it because we did not purchase it there. At this point we had to contact ford directly and threaten legal action in order to effect repairs. At this time the explorer was new on the market and information that is now widely available was not available to us or others. It is my belief that ford motor company knowingly knew they had problems and now that i reflect back on it mr. Darnell alluded to me in one conversation to that effect, but at the time i did not put it together. I too was involved in a roll over with my explorer and it was totally destroyed along with my life and career. Had ford been more forthcoming with information that they had things may have been different for myself and many others. I have contacted an attorney who told me to much time had passed for me to take my case to court.

The front end just exploded for no reason. Please describe.tt

Vehicle vibrates 20 to 65 mph; vibrates more when applying brakes. Vehicle pulls very hard to right, sometimes to left; possibly caused by faulty engine mounts.

Noise when going over bumps or turning vehicle.

The vehicle has a severe vibration/shaking problem with the front suspension.i have had it checked with no problems according to my local dealer in blackfoot, id.the tires are brand new and they are balanced properly.ford has refused to fix this problem since the warranty has expired.i wrote them a letter explaining that it is a safety issue and not a warranty issue but they blew it off as an expired warranty issue.ford has admitted to the defect through publishing of a tsb # 96-4-15.it resolves a vibration/shaking problem with my model at various speeds of which my problem exists at 60-75 mph.it violently shakes the front end to make it difficult to brake heavily and maintain control on all road surfaces.the fix is a newly redesigned left and right engine mount and an addition of a lateral shock absorber installed in the rear of the truck.i wanted them to fix it as a safety recall but they refused.i'm currently taking other actions such as reporting this problem through your site.evidently, ford thinks they can get away with it.

Vibration, sometimes severe, at approximately 50 mph and faster.ford dealer aware of the problem, but say they cannot repair.dealer has suggested that tires and shocks be replaced, which i have done but to no avail.had front end aligned, left camber shim installed, radius arm bushings replaced, tires balanced and re-balanced, front right tire replaced but the problem still persists.vibration becomes severe at higher speeds.not safe.i have contacted the ford motor company customer service rep., but they tell me to see the dealer!getting the run-around.vehicle is only 5 years old with only 68000 highway miles.this should not happen!i have spent approximately $1,000 to repair the problem without success.please help me!i am concerned that, with all of the vibration, something will loosen while i'm driving with my wife and children causing an accident.i feel this is a design flaw as i have spoken with several other explorer owners who have the same problem.i do not drive the vehicle hard.i take excellent care of the vehicle and, for the most part, it has been a good vehicle except for the incessant vibration.i feel that it is the responsibility of ford to pay the price of repair (or replacement) before someone gets hurt or killed from this obvious design flaw.anything you can do will be very much appreciated.thank you, greg halpern.

While vehicle was elevated for tire rotation, i noticed a crack in what i call the torsion bar on both sides of the front end of my vehicle.the torsion bar is attached to the outer end of the cross beams inside each wheel.the cracks looked like fatigue failures.they encircled the rear end of the torsion bar bushing where it goes through the support bracket.both sides were about to completely fail.to my knowledge i had not hit anything that would cause these parts to fail.if i had continued to drive and a failure had occurred i would have potentially lost control of the vehicle and possibly have rolled over.i returned the failed parts to my local ford dealer, ken stoepel ford in kerrville, texas, and suggested he let the manufacturer know.

While driving at speeds of 55mph, the vehicle's front left wheel bearing seized, causing the wheel to lock up.

The car shakes at speeds in excess of 65 mph.it shake soo much i believe we are damaging parts of the car that could lead to and accident or premature deterioration and wear and tear.i am not satisfied with the dealers response sighting normal wear and tear.i beleive there to be a design problem with this car more than normal wear and tear.other problems i have had with this car include 3 front end wheel bearing replacements which in hindsight might have been caused by this vibration before it became so noticeable.i am very unhappy with the performance of the engine mounts.they are a basic and integral part of the car tha should not wear out.i am concerned enough that this severe vibration could cause an accident and warrants consideration from nhtsa and ford motor company.

While driving home from sandiego, my vehicle seemed very unstable.three days earlier i had just had my 4 month old tires rotated, balanced and aliegned.immediatly returned to dealer to be told i was lucky not to have a blow out, that the passenger side rear tire had a 10" bulge on the inside wall.they replaced the tire.30 days latter, i notice a similar unstable ride, went back to the dealer to be told it was now the front passenger side tire with a similar defect.they offered to replace, i opted to upgrade to a michellin tire.2 weeks latter, i notice i am missing a lug nut on the drivers side rear tire.the big "o" tire dealer tells me the bolt is stripped and forgot to tell me.

The tread separated while driving on i-8 at 70 mph and damaged the right front and side my explorer. The treadless tire did not deflate and i safely slowed and gradually steered to the shoulder. While enroute to vacation on the coast of south carolina, our explorer had a blowout approximately 40 miles from charleston on i-26.the tire was only 4-6 months old with excellent treads, we had to get two new firestones installed at sonny's tire & alignment in summerville, sc. Because the blowout of the tired occurred on the left rear of the explorer, my wife, who was driving at the time, was able to maintain control on the interstate until we could pull off onto the safety lane.at the time, we did not realize that this was not an isolated incident and we did not report the blowout.the firm in summerville that installed the new tires stated that the blowoit had occurred due to tire failure from tread separation and not from running over a foreig object.the blowout occurred on the side of the tire.we still have the mate to the tire that blew out , since it was mounted underneath the caras a spare.it is available for inspection if needed.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Approximately 18 months after i purchased this suv (brand new, 0 miles) two of the tires developed bubbles on them. I noticed them during a weekly inspection that i perform on the vehicle. I had those two tires repalced by a local tire store. About 6 months later a 3rd. Tire developed a buble. At that time i had the remaining two original tires replaced. I still have the original spare tire on the vehicle, it has never been on the ground. I didn't get the numbers off of it however, with the defects on the other original tires of this vehicle i would bet it is one of the tires involved in the recall.

While driving at 55 mph and 60 mph, left front wheel broke off the spindle next to the axle, causing the tire to fall off. Consumerwas able to bring vehicle to a stop on three tires, and shock absorbers were flying accross the highway.

While changing my rear brakes last friday on my ford explorer i decided to check my spare tire which happens to be a firestone atx. To my surprise the tire had actually "blown-out" and seperated while in the spare tire rack under my vehicle. This tire has not been on my vehicle since july of 1999 when i purchased four new tires and put the best looking tire in the spare tire rack. I believe someone needs to look at this tire in the rack and document this before i reomve it. This backs up ford's claim that it is the tire, not the vehicle that is at fault. You can see i have not tampered with tis tire in anyway, there are no fresh marks on the spare tire system showing the tire has not moved in many months. (dot number: b081tiresize: p235/75r15)

Consumer replaced firestone atx tires (p235/75r15), they had trouble staying in balance even after alignments and balancing, consumer learned of recall 00t005 and is being denied due to purchasing the tires prior to january 1, 2000.

On 8/15/97 we were travelling west on i-40 between winslow, az and flagstaff, az when our rear passenger tread came flying off our tire.fortunately, my husband was able to safely control the vehicle, reduce our speed and pull off the highway.we examined the damage, there was some small amount of body damage, but the tire, still inflated, had no tread. We removed the tire, replaced it with the spare and made our way slowly to flagstaff where we found a discount tire co. And had the damagedtire replaced, not with firestone tire, and we continued on our way to las vegas the next day.in november we took our vehicle to discount tire to have the other 3 tires replace and were told that they all showed tread separation and we were lucky.currently, we have one of those firestone tires as a spare as it showed the least to no separation.the dot # i provided is from the spare.i do not have the number off of the actual defective tire.no reports filed since there was, thankfully, no serious accident.i have receipts from both tire purchases and one from ford stating that we didn't have matching tires since we'd replaced the one, so they couldn't do the alignment requested that we thought was why the suv pulled to the right so drastically.we were told, by discount tire co. Rep., that it could have been due to the separation the other tires were experiencing.we feel very fortunate after learning of the recall.we had never heard of that type of tire separation before and the tires appeared to be in great shape!they weren't all that old nor worn.this was our first trip in this vehicle.it was frigheningbut we chalked it up to a blowout type of incident and did not report it.the slight body damage has since been taken care of too.( dot number: w2hl1m0083 tire size: p235/75r15 )

Traveling from western washington to helena montana i experienced a strong shake in my front end.i proceeded to drive home anyway as i had been gone for over a week and needed to get back to work.when i arrived home in helena i went to a alignment shop a few days after my arrival.i was told by the alignment person that my left front tire would not balance properly.after this i inspected the tire myself only to find that i could visually observe several bumps on the outside of the tire.i contacted the dealer where i had got the tires (i had only 5,000 miles on these tires), and they contacted firestone.firestone sent a replacement tire and the dealer put it on for me.the next day i heard about the recall and because of the problem i experienced with the one tire they sent me four new tires.i am satisfied that my tires were replaced, but i feel very lucky that i did not experience a blow out as i was traveling at high speeds and the tires was obviously bad.according to the dealer the cords inside the tire had ripped causing the obvious warping on the outside of the tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I had my firestone atx tires replaced by sears.i sent the necessary paper work to firestone on august 21, 2001 for reimbursement.i have call firestone twice since i sent them the information (october 2, 2001 and november 5, 2001). They have acknowledge recieving my paper work, but i still have not receive my check from firestone.this is going on for three months and i still have not recieve a check.i call firestone and i get nothing but a run-around.i would appreciate any help.thanks.

Multiple failures, continually brake problems.the vehicle also overheated, thermostat replaced several times. A/c compressor malfunction, etc.a blowout ripped the running board assembly, the abs light was intermittent and the mechanic could not figure out why, the brakes locked up on the vehicle and violently skidded to a stop, the exhaust was replaced twice, there was a noise that lingered on in the front end and a loud creaking sound. *sc

I had been traveling on the interstate for approximately 40 miles when i noticed a vibration.i slowed from 65 mph to 60 mph.within the next mile or so, there was a loud bang and i was instantly going sideways.when i got the vehicle under control and stopped, i initally thought i had struck something on the road because all of my tires were still inflated.then someone who stopped to help me pointed out that i had lost all of the tread on the rear driver's tire.i believe it is significant to note that i had just had my tires rotated about a month prior at a tires plus store and they did not inform me of any problems with my tires.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On the road while driving from jacksonville,fl. To norman,ok. On 12 apr. 95 i noticed a thumping vibration from the rear of my ford explorer. Following a visual inspection of the wheels i determined the vibration was caused by a swelling of the threaded surface of the left rear tire. Nearing our destination my partner and i decided to drive on into oklahoma and have the vehicle inspected at the nearest ford dealership since it was still under warranty. On apr 14th reynolds ford of norman,ok referred me to firestone mastercare car service in norman,ok. The tires were then balanced and rotated and it was recommended i have the shocks replaced which i did with the top of the line shocks.the problem persisted on the return trip to jacksonville and continued to worsen. Having been bounced back and forth between ford and firestone neither claiming responsibility for the tire problem nor able to fix it , i decided to replace the tires bf goodrich and have had no tire problems since. I feel like i've gotten the run a round about my atx tires and should have been compensated for tires and shocks not to mention the time wasted and the exposure to a hazardous condition had the tire exploded during high speed driving on my return trip from oklahoma. I was led to believe that my tires were ok and that the problem was merely an out of balance tire probably caused by bad shocks.they completely ignored the swelling at high temperature while driving at interstate speeds.( dot number: )

The tire separated while i was driving on the interstate.the tire did not deflate and i was able to pull off the highway without crashing. It was the rear drivers side tire. I had two early tire problem one bubble on tread area and the other a chunk 5x10 inches came off with no damage.in early summer a large seperation flap caused about $1500 damage to the lt rear quarter panel area, which firestone payed with no questions.later in august the rt. Rear seperated with a smaller flap that did about $500 damage.a claim was not submitted here as the familywas on the way to rocky pt and had no room to store the old tire.we just had to buy another atx firestone tire because the tire store wasn't a firestone store.just last month, july 2000 i had a noticable steering wheel vibration at higher speeds you guessed it, thetread was starting to bubble.i bought a used firestone atx from the dealer that used to handle my tires.i needed to match the wear on the other tire as 4 wheel drives require equal rolling radius on all wheels.i took the old tire to the firstone company store and was told by the manager that they couldn't warrantee it because that tire was no longer available.that i concider to be an intentionally miss leady statement when a total recal come out two weeks later.i was never offered a subtitute for tires!i also have a spare that hasn't been on the ground in years, since the earlyest tire problem.this tire is checked, pealing and has pea sized voids in that have fallen from the tread area.my guess is that this is caused be the high rad heat in the local and is guarenteed not from of road use.i decided to right this because on the tv news tonight there wasa segment werein it was stated that there haven't been that many complaints.well--- phooey!not everybody complains, if a set of tire cost me a weeks take home pay i'd complain hard.i think a lot of better off people (or yuppie stagecoach drivers) just think oh well bad luck and buy more tires.i do hate to get screwed though.iv'e been waiting two weeks now for acceptable atx type tires that will run on a little snow or ice.

The tread separated and tire did not deflate. The other 3 tires had cracks along edges also. 40,000 miles on tires and properly inflated. Had handling problems prior to the tread separation.( dot number: tire size: p235 75r15 )

While driving on i95 in north carolina , on july 06, 2000 the right front tire shed its tread and left us waiting about four hours until the local firestone tire store opened so we could get the tire replaced and continue on our trip to maryland.upon return to myrtle beach , s.c. I had recently learned of recall and immediately went to the tire dealer that i had purchased my tires from. They told me they would have the tires in sometime this next week and they would replace all four at no cost to me.but they also said they wouldreplace my tires with the wilderness tx and i dont think i would feel comfortable with anymore of their tires, so i will return to the store this week and seeif i can get another brand of tire as my replacement at their expense. I would also like to be reimbursed for the damage to my vehicle in the amount of $1268.00 and i hope they will agree to this but i was told to contact firestone and the number that has been given on the national news and of course i can not get throug( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

On two occasions (aug/1998 & may/2000) i experienced a tire failure - total tread separation. Each incident occurred at high speed in extreme heat. There is body damage from the tread slamming the body of the car.( dot number: tire size: 235/75-15 )

The problem started close to 6 months ago.i noticed anytime i reached speeds abouve 60 mph my explorer would begin to vibrate violently.i didn't think much of it at the time.i always keep my tires roatated and inflated properly, so i didn't think that was the problem.i recently was going down a back road and hit a bump.i felt my car jerk and then felt my tire was flat.upon exaiming the flat tire i observed that the tread had peeled partly off.at the time i was unaware that my tire was prone to this type of failure.i had the tire replaced with a uniroyal.up to this point i had been totally unsatisfied with my tires. They handle poorly in wet conditions and are noisey.recently the shaking became more frequent.i had the shocks replaced thinking that was the problem.the shaking continued.and last week i started reading the first stories about my tires.upon exaiming my tires, it was quite apparent that tread failure was the problem.i observed a large crack all the way around the tire tread on all the of my firestone tires and the spare.i documented this all with photographs.i was in a bind about what to do.i go back to college this coming friday, the 18th.this will involve a long drive at high speeds and carrying heavy loads. I realized i need to have my tires replaced asap.i began looking at tires and became concerned that i, a cash-strapped college student, would have to replace relativlynew tires because of a manufacture's defect.lucky a recall was issued, but this has done little to resolve my problem.with my move-in day rapidly approaching i have been placed on a waiting list for tires.i felt the nhtsa should be aware of my story and the fact that i'm a resident of south carolina, which has been given a low priority in the recall.thank you for your time and i hope this helps you in investigating the situation.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

These wilderness at p235/75 tires are not part of the present firestone recall.the tires have cracks that run around the circumference of the tire on both sides where the tread meets the body of the tire.a firestone service center employee inspected the tires on august 11, and i was told that firestone would replace the tires, and i was placed on a wating list.on september 4, i returned to the store to determine the status of my tire replacement and was told that firestone would not replace the tires because they did not have the "dl" dot code.i asked if the tires were safe to drive on and was told by the firestone representative that i should replace the tires if i could afford to do so.i have replaced the tires.the tires were on the vehicle for 15 months, have approximately 22,000 miles of service and have approximately 9/32" of tread remaining.the tires were rotated frequently and maintained between 30 and 32 psig.i feel strongly that firestone wilderness at tires other than those with dot code "dl" are faulty and would like these tires inspected by a representative of nhtsa so that the recall can be broadened to cover other firestone wilderness at tires before other accidents occur.( dot number: 8xhl tire size: p235/75 )

While driving southbound on texas highway 288 between manvel and lake jackson, the tread on the right rear tire separated from the tire and came off.the tread damaged the wheel well, the corner of the rear bumber, and the trim below the rear passenger door.the tire did not lose air and i was able to pull the vehicle onto the shoulder and safely stop.this happened at approximately 6:00 pm and the temperature was about 90 degrees.there were four adults and two children under the age of 2 riding in the vehicle at the time.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Tire tread blew off while driving on straight road at about 35mph. Some tread remained hanging off the tire. Tire was still inflated. Was original tires for the vehicle. Rotation occurred at about the proper intervals. Decided to replace both rear tires at the time. New tires placed on front of vehicle. Old front tires (still firestone atx) were moved to the rear. My problem sounded exactly like those being reported on the news, so i thought that i better report it. It is apparent that this was more than a close call, i realize that this was a near fatal accident.besides my being blessed, the only reason that i could create of why i am still here today, is due to the width of the median.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

While on vacation to montana in august 1998, we had a flat tire, which we discovered in the morning after parking the car in a bozeman, mt, motel lot overnight. We replaced it with a spare. When we took the flat tire to our mechanic after we got home to wisconsin, to have it fixed, he said it could not be repaired because the tread had separated. We had to buy a new tire. It was hot (in the 80s) in montana during our trip there and, prior to the flat, we had driven several hundred miles at speeds of 70-75 mph, including driving over a high pass on the idaho border and driving for many miles on unpaved roads.we have not had any further problems, though we do have 4 of the recalled tires currently on our explorer. Cable is rusted unable to operate

Spring to the trottle gauge stuck, causing car to accelerate at full throttle. I was going 55 mph at the time and could not stop the car at all with the brakes.the manufacturer says this is a mechanical failure not covered because my warranty expired. My insurance will not cover the damage to car because it was not an accident. I could haveeasily been killed and caused a serious accident if i didnt decide to stop the car inthe manner i chose.

Heater system smells like burning leaves everytime you operate heater

Burning smell and a bit of smoke coming from ventilation system. Happens only occasionally. Smells like burning leaves sometime. Once entire passenger compartment filled with smoke but cleared out quickly when windows open.i heard that this type of incident has been reported before and is attributed to a hot element in the blower unit. Is this something ford dealers have a ready repair for?

While vehicle is parked, leaves and other foreign items would enterheater/ventilation area. This could cause a fire if ignition source is near. Took to dealer to have ventilation cleaned out. This has happened several times.

Pe98048; blower assembly fires; while driving with the air conditioner on, smoke started coming out of the vents. Truck checked by dealership. Dealer found th fire startedin the vents which was caused by debris. The problem was corrected.

Leaves in the blower motor caused smoke to fill the cab of the car.

When the heater is turned on, the the passenger's compartment is filled with smoke. Dealer has not seen.

While driving down the road, a smell like leavesburning and smoke came from under the dash and there was a fire in the heater system.

While driving consumer noticed smoke coming through the vents which resulted in afire. Dealer claimed that fire wasdue to leaves building up in thevents.

Anti-freeze is leaking intoexhaust system which make it hard to see when anti-freeze is needed to defog window.

Design of auto heater motor speed control is defective.speed is controlled by switching in various wire resistors mounted in the air plenum without a protective cover over the resistance wire elements.resistors get hot at low motor speeds and incinerate leaves or paper in the area.this fire melts the plastic heater fan housing, as well as the a/c evaporator.site of entry of leaves is unknown, but one dealer rep said there is a gap in the fender wall.two dealers' service writers and an independent mechanic acknowledged several such fires in explores and f-150's a perforated metal cover over the resistor elements is mandatory.

The contact owns a 1993 ford explorer.while idling at a traffic light, the contact noticed dark smoke coming through the vents.the contact shut off the vehicle and restarted it when the smoke ceased.while driving 25 mph, the smoke reappeared.the contact looked under the hood, but could not locate the source of the failure.the contact had the heater fuse removed, which stopped the vehicle from smoking.the vehicle had not yet been taken to the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 89,000.updated 05/27/08 the consumer stated the ac only worked on high and the rear windshield wiper did not work. Updated

Leaves would enter the heater system from the outside and would start to burn while driving.

Fire in heater blower, 1993 ford explorer, heavy smoke in passenger compartment.

While driving with heat on, vehicle filled upwith smoke due to leaves getting into the heater box.

The aluminum finned heat exchanger unit under the hood has a plastic shroud around it the ducts fresh air into the air conditioning and heater blower ducting. This shroud became full of leaves which eventually caught fire , filling the entire interior of the vehicle with dense smoke. I had to pull the duct work under the hood apart and blow out the remaining ash and leaves to alleviate any future fire source. Ford has a defect in the way they designed the fresh air intake ducting which allows leaves and other debris to drift directly into the blower housing shrouding which becomes a major fire hazard. I now have to cover the lower half of the windshield and the upper half of the hood including the fresh air intake ducts with fiberglass window screen when the vehicle is parked outside to assure leaves do not fill the ducting system again causing another fire. I have also found 2 other incidents of this blower housing fires in other nhtsa incidents on this site as referenced by this :

Started 1993 ford explorer and heater fan was on setting 2.burning leaf smoke started pouring out of the defrost vents (heater selector was set to defrost).immediately shut off ignition and had to drive other vehicle to work.will have to remove heater blower motor resistor assembly and clean out debris from blower housing.noticed burnt leaf smell before but never saw smoke until today.

I was parked in my driveway and was opening up the glass portion of the tailgate when it suddenly exploded in my face.the glass broke into a million small pieces and many large jagged pieces.i found glass as far as 20 feet away, i also found several pieces in my face and hand.when i contacted the local ford dealer i was informed that this was very common and every vehicle equipped with a rear defogger will have this happen.usually as they are driving down the road or shutting one of the side doors.when i took my vehicle in to a local glass repair shop i was told that this was not normal at all.i plan on sending ford a letter, if i can ever find an address to their corporate headquarters, but i wanted to tell everyone possible about what happened to me.thank you.

In 1998 my ford explorer was recalled for nhtsb id # 97v083000, component: visual systems: mirrors. The recall was to correct a short circuit condition that could occur in the remote power mirror control swith circuit board as a result of a separated part of the contact assembly bridging the switch positive battery pad and adjacent chassis ground pad. The recall was completed. But, the exact defect stated in the recall ocurred on my vehicle. Evidently the installation of a 10 amp inline fuse was not a positive correction to this defect! i contacted ford motor company and was told that i would be responsible for replacing the "switch".
