My son was driving home from the next street over when my 1992 ford explorer started smoking in the cab and then caught on fire. The dashboard, glove compartment burned, and the windshield cracked from the heat . The hood got scorched, and the head liner melted, dropping the melted liner onto my seats. Truck has not been repaired due to cost at this time.
At 5:30 a.m. On february 22, 2006, i awoke to a loud explosion. I went to look out my kitchen window and under the carportour ford explorer had flames coming out of the hood. As i was talking to 911 to report the fire i heard another explosion. Hung up quickly to go and get all of our 4children out of the house and as we were going out heard another explosion. Thank god we all got out and the fire dept. Got the fire out before the house went with the fire. We could see after the fire was out that the drivers side front tire was blown off and the battery was blown up as well as the front windshield. We want ford to be notified so that no one has to endure a similar experience and god forbid loose any family members!

I bought a 1992 ford explorer on 2-16-05 from a privite party thru the newspaper. On 04-16-05 i was driving to softball practice on a busy road when a gentleman next to me in his own vehicle yelled get out of your car it is on fire. He let me turn in front of him and ipulled in to a parking space and got out of my car. Within 3 to 4 minutes the front end of my car was completly in flames. All the windows broke and the tire popped. The seat i was sitting in only minutes before was completely in flames. The firemen came and put the fire out. By then my ford explorer was totled. I was very lucky i did not have my stepchildren with me that day and i was told to get out of my car in time for myself not to have been hurt. I only had liability insurance on the vehicle and my belongings were burnt. There is a recall on the vehicle that can cause smoke and fire. I called the ford company and told them what happend they said they will get back to me about the situation. I received a generic letter from them yesterday saying there is nothing they can do to help me. I feel very lucky in a sence that i did not lose my life that day, but also very violated that i now have to buy a new car and replace belongings that were destroyed.
Went to ford dealer 3 months ago about check engine light said oxygen sensor or cold weather it be fine on my way home sunday it had a bad miss then fire shot through my floor board and dash all my doors instantly locked i barely made it out of my vehicle if wife and children had been in prob wouldn't be here at the second i made it out of my car i turned and watched the steering wheel hit the seat i own i 1992 ford explorer i can be reached i have contacted an attorney locally.
While driving vehicle automatically shut down. Consumer put the gear in park. She was then told that vehicle was on fire. There was no warning. Consumer statedshe heard a pop. Consumer contacted dealer and manufacturer. Found that it was a computer problem.
My car caught fire at parking lot when i tried starting it up after my girls and i got back in car after being at mall for about 2 hours flames coming out from bottom and top of engine and front dash. Thank god we got out in time. My cars electrical wires for everything is melted and im unsure how much more is damaged since im not a mechanic.
I am concerned about the number of electrical problems i have had since i purchased my explorer. Since november of 1992, i have had 3 batteries short out. I have had to replace the battery cable harness (if was fried). I have had to replace the ignition switch. I have also had to replace the a/c, heater blower switch along with a fuse box that ties into this system. When the truck is running all of the lights flicker and notice the altenator gauge fluxuating. When reviewing this site, i noticed the number of electrical problems with the explorer, along with the number of fires. I am beginning to wonder if i should be concerned. Please look into this problem.
Battery failed. *dh
Battery replaced. *sd
Battery leaked acid through the vent holes corroding the cables.
Consumer attempted to start truck, it wouldn't start, took it to the a dealer, the power cable was burned out, truck wouldn't start . Please describe .*
Due to a corroded positive battery cable, power went out, cd changer failed and the automatic transmission cooler line bursted.
While driving vehicle stopped running, warning light came on, and consumer went immediately to a parking space. Took to dealer , and dealer saidmodule near the battery had dirt in it. Consumer stated there was no dust incity. Dealer put in the module. Consumer said when vehicle cut off there was no power steering/ brakes, everything stopped.the owner is says that such sensitive part should not have been placednext to the battery in the engine compartment.
The vehicle occasionally hesitates on accelleration, and repeatedly the engine stalls (however, radio etc stays on) causing a loss of power steering, brake power, etc. This occurs in all seasonsand at all speeds but, seems more prevelant during the summer months. This stalling has resulted in 10 near miss accidents while attempting u-turns and left turns in traffic , and while driving at freeway speeds (65mph +). I have repoted this to the dealer so many times they don't even track it anymore. The response during the "service" checks has ranged from, "we can't get it to create the symptoms"to "it's a mass air flow sensor." it is my belief that there is a manufacturer's defect in the design of the wiring harness, or the computer. I know that this problem is not limited to the "explorer" as a work associate had the same occurrances with his aerostar van. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
Vehicle stalls out intermittently, dealer cannot locate problem.
Fire started in the dashboard near the steering colum, possible short in ignition.

After purchasing this uv from a dealer.paying top dollar for this eddie bauer uv,i have had nothing but problems with the vehicle. Could not go more than 60 miles an hiur,uv was shaing so bad. Oil leaking ,brakes bad. It was bandaided t sell i am sure. A 8 year old car with only 52,000miles and in this horrible repair condition,is almost suspect toinquire y of a odometer turn back, luckily i bought ins, took to a ford dealerand had repairs totoalling almost $2500.of which i had to pay $800. Out of my own pocket. The brakesneeded to be worked on, ther were 3 reca;lls which were taken care of. The engine was needing seals and much more . The driver seat belt is broke, now and the engine is now leaking again and i have to put a qt. Of oil every wek. The car is basically unsfae to drive, betweeen the brakes and the engine leaking oil, which i was told if it got into the gear box,it would start a fire. This was the words of the ford dealer.whre i had the uv serviced. Recently i noticed an article in the newspaper commenting onthe frodgasket flaw.i have been trying fro days to call their toll free number for infromation line always busy. They do recall some of this model.idont know where to turn to any more i have 3 children and am concerned about their saftey,a single motherwith no income other than 900.. Amonth from workmasn comp. Cant afford anymore repairs neeed help to where i need to go, i feel the uv is not safe and i feel that the odometer may have been set back, the dealers where i purchased are tired of hering my complaints. They worked onthe uv once, but never gave me a list of what work they didafter having the car in their shop for 10 days. I would like my money back, but i will have to prove the car is not safe . Tell me what i can do. I can fgax you all the copies of repair work that was serviced on this car in feb. If you need them it may help u make a desicion as to where i turn to next. Please respond what do i do??
Engine running rough at slow idle but ok at fast idle.
From the beginning the explorer has had engine vibration, oil leakage problems,at 98 miles, of buying the explorer from the dealer from brand new. As to date the explorer has not been fixed, and when i have taken the explorer in to be fixed, they ask me to take it home for they done want to fix it.i have reported it to the atterney generals office, and ford wrote them a letter and said there wasn't anything wrong, but they lyied????the engine has been fixed 22 times for oil leaks, transmittion 3 times, vibration 12 times or more,3 times for the engine missing,3 times for the engine beening noisey, and one dealer worked on it has said it can't be fixed, that ford should replace it, but this was denied by ford as the dealer had made the request. After all of this ?? this doesn't seam fair???for we still have the explorer with all the same problems, oil leaks ,vibrations, transmittion not right, gas in the oil,and still misses. Can anything be done by you??

My explorer caught on fire while i was driving down the highway. The fire was around the engine. The fire also in the dash of the vehicle, so fire is unknown where started. The vehicle was totalled. Please look in to this matter or contact me on who i need to contact with this matter.
Engine leaks oilcontinuously, problem with vibration and gasoline leaking into the engine oil.
Engine backfire causes sudden loss of brakes. Seven vacuum hoses tie into the one pipe and then into the intake manifold. Only the brake vacuum assist has a clamp on the hose. When the engine backfires into the intake manifold, it blew off three of these hoses resulting in inadequate vacuum for the power assist brakes. The engine funs very rough but maybe it will smooth out when driven a little. So, you drive and suddenly find no brakes. If you are lucky, you have time and room enough to stop.
Engine rear main seal replaced due to leak. *sd

Engine fire. (ohio traffic crash report).
My explorer caught on fire while i was driving down the highway. As i was getting out it was already in flames over the windshield. I had only liability on it so it was a complete lose. I have contacted ford motor company and explained the problem i had several times and was told "their is nothing we can do for you. A week after my explorer caught on fire another explorer caught on fire in a kmart parking area. It was also in the the engine that it started. I have a complete lose here and i'm just your average working person to strive to have something in life and take care of my family. Just when i thought i was getting ahead i have this incident happen. A total of 8,000 down the drain not counting the stress that caused me to get sick and be out of work for a week. I just think someone should do something about these explorers catching on fire before someone gets hurt badly. Ford has no answers for me and act like my loss is no business of theirs. I think it is. I was driving a ford vehicle and would like to know why it caught on fire and if they are responsible, would like to be compensated for it.thank you for your time.

Vehicle was picked up from a dealership and driven for approximately 20 minutes to haveemission system checked.when hood was raised for this examination an engine compartment fire started.an examination ofvehicle determined that fire originated close to bottom of engine where it met the automatic transmission assembly.possible cause was automatic tranmission overheating and causing a group of wires and grease to ignite.please provide any additional information / documentation.note:prior to the fire, the dealership was examining the for the following problems:anti-lock brake system, a hub & wheel noise, and a leaking exhaust manifold located close to the rear differential unit.
Exhaust system has a design flaw. The hot exhaust pipe is 1/2" from a rubberbushingon the radius arm- passenger's side. The intens eheat deteriorates the bushing, causingmovement in radius arm and right wheel. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that a recall was issued and mailed in 1/98.but it also expired in 1/98, contact94-m-85.

Within 24 hours of buying my 2002 ford explorer sport trac, i experienced my first problem with this vehicle.i took the vehicle home on september 14, 2002, saturday afternoon after buying it and on sunday (9/15) with my wife in the car, the vehicle started hesitating/jerking and finally stalled out while driving down a country road.it seemed that the vehicle was not getting any gas.i was able to get the vehicle started again and i immediately took the vehicle back to be checked and was told it would be fixed.i received a call from future ford telling me that i should only fill the gas tankfull to avoid problems.i informed the future ford representative that this was not an acceptable option for a brand new vehicle.i have taken this vehicle back to future ford 6+ times for the same problem and in each case it was not fixed, or it cannot be fixed.one time this last summer in 100+ degree heat, my wife and i stopped at a shopping mall.when we started to leave the mall, the vehicles air-conditioning would not work, as we started driving it started hesitating and then black smoke was coming out the tail pipe and it was jerking violently.i was close to the dealership and i immediately drove it to the dealer.future ford dealership states they are unable to find anything wrong, but they have replaced parts they thought were causing the problem and other items they found wrong.why or how they cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle is beyond me.this vehicle has stalled out or hesitated numerous times besides those i have taken it in for.i have been fortunate to this point that when it hesitates and/or stalls out that i have not been in the middle of turning right or left or heavy commuter traffic.because when it dies there is not any power steering.i will not take it on any long trips because i feel that it is not safe or dependable.

Fuel regulator diaphram blew causing the vaccum return line to deteriate and come off. While the key was on it was blowing gas everywhere. Thankfully the motor wasn't hot because it was running right over the exhaust manifold. This could have caused a major fire possibly hurting passengers if the vehicle was on the highway. Being a firefighter myself i feel that if it was hot and the constant flow of gas with no way of knowing what was going on it would have been an instant ball of flames. My major concern is making them aware of this to prevent any problems or possibly even deaths. This is my family vehicle along with many other peoples what if there was kids in it? this is a very unsafe piece of equipment i feel and it needs to be addressed.
Ford motor company failed to help me even though it was clearly a mechanical defect.the car was running fine, and i had no warning, such as engine light, prior to the engine catching on fire

The mechanic found that the brake line was severed due to the main spring support broke and cut the brake line. The car was towed to another mechanic who did the repair. I believe that a very serious design flaw exist in the brake system on the ford explorer. The light on my abs brakes would come on once in a while then go out. I think that most people would not even notice. It happened to me twice that i am aware of, the first time i was braking moderately hard for a red light my vehicle immediately spun hard to the left i was able to correct it and regain control i was driving at 40 mph. The second time it occurred i was driving at 50 mph under the exact same conditions but this time i spun out and hit a curb damaging my left rear rim and breaking the support cable for my spare tire. This time i traced the problem to the switch on the brake fluid reservoir. On a vehicle that spins out so easy i dont think that it is a good idea to disable the abs brakes with a low fluid sensor. I had plenty of fluid in my reservoir the switch just failed, if the faulty switch had been set up to just indicate low fluid the dangerous conditions that happened would not occurre. This is a copy of the letter i sent to ford. I think that a lot of the roll over accidents are caused by this problem.

While driving at approximately 35mpr , both the emergency brake and antilock lights came on. I pulled over to check the situation. Couldn't determine a problem so drove two blocks to a service station where i determined that i was loosing break fluid. After pouring in brake fluid and it came right out on the ground i left the car to be worked on the next day. The mechanic found that the brake line was severed due to the main spring support broke and cut the brake line. The car was towed to another mechanic who did the repair. The second mechanic suggested that i report this very unusal failure. He determined that the spring support rusted away and the spring moved and cut brake line. He had to install spring support member cut off rivets and repair chassis and new brake hose and steel lines.

The contact owns a 1992 ford explorer. The contact stated the brake pedal would feel spongy when depressed and would increase stopping distance.the vehicle previously received repairs under nhtsa recall campaign id number 96v024001 (service brakes, hydraulic: power assist: hydraulic). The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised that there was a missing stud and nut from the master cylinder. The manufacturer advised that the vehicle was already repaired under the recall campaign and would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 220,000.
Recall 96v024000; when driving and upon depressing brake pedal to make a graudal stop, brake pedal traveled to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance. Emergency parking brake was engaged to stopvehicle. Consumer has contacted the dealer.dealer statedthat air brake booster assembly was bad andshould be replaced. The vehicle had power brake assembly replaced in march 1966 due to recall on this part.so, the current failure is due to the improper fixing by the dealer at recall fixing.

Brake master cylinder booster separated from the vehicle, causing the brakes to fail.
The contact owns a 1992 ford explorer xlt.the contact states while driving approximately 55 mph on normal road conditions. There was a loud squealing noise coming from the front end of the vehicle .there was also excessive vibration.the driver continued operation with caution. Steering gear box failed due to leak. *sd
At any speed the steering gear box starts degrading which causes the truck to drift and wander all over the road.consumer states dealer recommended replacement of the gear box, dealer stated the gear box could not be adjusted.
The problem is that the power steering will intermittently freeze up, or stop operating altogether during a turn. It acts exactly like it would if the serpentine belt were off (not the case). If you force a turn, it will act normally again.this is very intermittent failure. The power steering pump has been replaced twice (for other reasons), but the problem is still there. While someone who is strong may be able to continue a turn without the use of the power steering, someone who is not may be unable to control the vehicle and an accident may result. I have not yet had the power steering gearbox replaced yet, as i felt i should report this 1st to see if there is any record of complaints of this from other explorer owners.

Power steering failure.
I first noticed a severe brake pull while operating the vehicle.when brakes were applied, the pull was so severe that the steering wheel would come out of my hands.upon inspection of the under suspension components i noticed the radius steering arm bushings had melted.being a previous certified general mechanic and an automotive inspector for the federal government, i knew this condition was not normal.i made a courtesy call to ford motor company to inform them of my findings.they acknowledged that a problem existed with the rubber material used in these bushings.mr. Esh (customer id 2160 of ford motor co.) told me they had sent out owner notification letters on 1992 explorers (94 m 85).i informed him that i never received this letter.ford motor company had an incorrect address.they had an oldpost office box number instead of my street name and number.mr. Esh said the timeframe on replacing these bushings had expired and he could not replace the bushings under warranty.i questioned him how come this was not a continuous safety recall.i disagree withford's refusal to issue a safety recall.at any time there is structural failure in a major suspension component that affects braking stability and steering control, this has the potential to create a life threatening situation.ford motor company acknowledged that they were aware of the bushing material component failure and stated that the ntsb did not deem it a safety item.these bushings are dissolving like a marshmallow over a fire!

Ihave been looking for interior door panels for about 2 yrs.the problem is with the portion of the interior door panel where you are supposed to grab the door to close it.all the salvage yards say the same thing"idont have to look that up, i know we dont have any, there all broken". My children have scratched their arms on the broken plastic that is left behind after the door pull/armrest breaks off.since i have been unsucssful in tring to locate a replacement i can only conclude that this is a big problem. It makes shutting the front doors difficult as there is no place to grab the door to close it. This is a real hassle when parked on a hill or it is windy, as the only thing to grab is the door handle half the time the door dosent latch fully making in nessessary to open the window and grab the top of the window to shut the door fully, creating a second hazard by opening up the possibilities of breaking the window. My children as i mentioned have been scratched badly enough to draw blood on several occasions, and my wife has ruined a couple of sweaters by getting them snagged on the jagged plastic. Ford wants over 100.00 per door to replace them(i need all four) and frankly icant afford it and dont think i should have to. Thank you.

Every 1992 for explorer that i have seen has had both rear rocker panels rusted away. Origonal body rust was guarenteed for 4 year or 60, 000 mi. My rust began much prior to 60,000 mi. But i was told at my ford dealer that the rust would have to have gone all the way through. My was well taken care of and did not rust as much as most. Ford does not even offer or make any parts to repair this. Ask any dealer in a 4 season state and they can tell you this is true. I feel this is way too widespread and should be addressed by ford to it's customers. I filed a complaint with ford some time ago. They said my complaint was noted and i never received any response. Thank you.

Radius arm bushing totally crumbled ,fell apart, causing a loss of vehicle control and brakes.
Replacement tires were same as factory original, rated at 50,000 miles.at 40,000 miles, began to experience vibration, the source of which could not accurately be identifed by mechanic.(u-joint and several bearings replaced to no effect).during driving trip to little rock for thanksgiving, vibration worsened, which i attributed to bad road surface conditions in mo and ar.during return trip to kansas city from little rock, approx. 100 miles west of little rock on wb i-40, right rear tire tread failed, delaminating completely from tire core at 70 mph.lost control of vehicle and traveled down grass embankment of center median, hit concrete drainage way at center, and continued up the opposite embankment toward oncoming eb traffic.regained partial control as vehicle slowed up the embankment, and was able to steer vehicle to rest back at the bottom of the median.passing motorists assisted in returning vehicle to the highway, and i put on the full-size spare.passing arkansas state trooper stopped and ascertained that there were no injuries nor collisions with other vehicles.no report was filed.continued to kansas city on spare tire; no further vibration noticed.approximately 5000 miles later replaced all four tires with same brand, firestone atx.these tires now have approximately 8000 miles.no further incidents to report.originally thought to be isolated incident, and so did not report to nhtsa until i heard news reports about your investigations on this tire.ntb salesman noted that they were familiar with failure problems on this tire at the time that i bought the last set. Iwent ahead and bought them because original set performed ok, and they were most economical product for my budget.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r14 )

Severe vibration problem between 55 and 65 mph.i have owned two 1992 explorers and both have this problem.dealer and tire manufacturers deny knowledge of any such problem.i see there are multiple complaints in your data base that identify the same problem.local ford dealer has said there is no service bulletin on this problem, however, i see your data base lists sb033695 as a likely bulletin that addresses this issue.how can i get a copy of the bulletin if ford denies it exists?this vibration problem showed up at just over 65,000 miles on the vehicle and i have done several wheel balancing efforts, bearing and rotor replacements to correct.additionally, i suspect the vibration problem could be related to service bulletin sb037583 which describes "vehicle operation that generates high exhaust may cause the radius arm insulator to deteriorate--i have observed such deterioration on my vehicle and may be the source of reduced stiffness or damping that contributes to wheel critical speed vibration response.please provide information on how to get a copy of this service bulletin too.thank you for your time.i look forward to your response.

Whendriving vehicle above (55) mph there is extreme vibration coming from the front end of vehicle. Vehcle has not been repaired.
When this bushing fails it affects the steering and control of the explorer and might be a cause of the firestone tire failers (ware and heating of tires). I have been checking other explorers and have found that almost half of the explorers i have seen show visable signs of this bushing being excessively worn. The right side bushing is next to the catalytic converter and subject to excessive heat.

Tire tracks show that as he came back onto the road, he lost control, the car flipped, and he was thrown from the vehicle and died as a result of severe head injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt. We didn't know that suv's tend to flip when control is lost. I saw the report on studying later models for front stabilizer bar links and thought you might want to look further back to 1992.
Motor mounts, muffler tailpipe assembly and rear axle shock absorbers need replacment due to vibration problems, service bulletin issued.
The faulty engine mount and rear axle shock absorber cause extreme vibration in the entire vehicle while driving, the engine is not harmonically balanced and sets up a vibration that extends to the frame and the rear shock absorbers..consumer states that this problem is a manufacturer defect, but manufacturer is n ot willing to take any responsibility, consumer was advised because of the age and the mileage it would be the consumer's responsibility,

We were going on vacation and had a blowout on the left rear at 65 mph in the fast lane of interstate 10 .the car began fishtailing and i was able to get it to the right shoulder.my wife asked why i was pulling over at first because she could not feel the problem.it scares me to death to think of what would have happened if she were driving alone at the time or with our daughter.they may have becoome statistics like so many others in explorers equipped with these tires.unfortunately, i still have 5 of these firestones, and the wait is months to have them replaced. After purchasing four new tires and all new shocks, the car would not ride smoothly at 60-65mph.with repeated return visits the mechanic tried rebalancing the tires, tried rotation and checked the u joints. Each time it still vibrated badly.finally he beleived that the vibration was caused by a tire defect and he replaced 1 tire for free.this reduced the amount of vibration but has not eliminated it.we rely heavily on using this car for family purposes especially with the summer vacation time and weekly camping trips.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

In june of 1999 i was traveling down i15 when i heard my explorer making funny thumping noises.i pulled off at the next exit and parked my car.i didn't know what it was so i let the car sit for a while in case it was something in the engine, i also got out and looked at the tires.this same noise had happened to us less than a year ago while traveling down the highway in aug. Of 1998 with the driver's side rear tire.i did not see any bulge on any of the tires so i decided to proceed down the road and if the noise persisted i was going to pull off again and call my father to come and get me.i was not on the road for a mile when the passenger side rear tire blew and i "fish-tailed"for a while untill the tire wrapped around the axel which took me into the median where i rolled twice.the police did come to the site and i was not cited for the incident because there was no way to avoid the incident.we notified our insurance company and they sent out what they called a "tire expert".the insurance company told us that this tire expert informed them that there was no reason the tire should have blown.this car was totaled beyond repair, so we had to accept the fact that we have been without a car for over a year.luckily we do have another car which we use to get to and from work.we also do have pictures of the tire and the vehicle after the accident.i unfortunately do not have the vin # on me but probably could find it if i need it.please keep me informed of any updated news or if you have any questions call me.thank you-kristie heaton( dot number: )

I was traveling down highway and the spare tire cable broke and the wheel fell out and got jammed under the explorer.luckily i some how was able to get pulled over before their was an accident.after that had happen i found out that they had a recall on the cables due to them breaking.
The spare tire cable of my 1992 ford explorer that holds up the spare tire rusted out dropping the spare tire to the ground. Fortunately this occurred while the vehicle was stopped. If the tire fell when moving down the highway at 65mph, the consequences may have been very different. There is no excuse for ford to use a cable material that can corrode and drop the tire.

On june 11, 1999 i was driving on route 571 in jackson, new jersey when my car started to shake.i pulled over to the side of the road.i got out and looked at my passenger side rear tire and the entire tread was seperated from the tire.i called my road side assistance allstate and had them come change the tire.at that time i only thought of this as a blow out due to the fact that i was carrying a heavire then normal load in my trunk.until the recall i did not realize what had actually happened to my tire. The read basically seperated from the tire it self.i had my spare tire put and i brought the car to sears who sold me another firestone atx tire.currently, i am very upset that the new jersey recalls may not even happen for year.this is happening here to and it is a problem which needs to be corrected with no delays.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I had the first blowout in feb. 98, i had the spare put on and went to firestone the next day (i was approx. 60 miles from home when this happened). They wouldn't honor the warranty even though the tires had less than 10,000 miles on them because i wasn't the purchaser. I had contacted the person who sold me my explorer the night of the blowout and they were going to bring me the original paperwork on the tires to use the warranty but firestone said this wasn't possible since they were not the owner of the vehicle any longer. I had the second blowout in june of 98 on the freeway just leaving texas and coming into new mexico, the temperature outside was about 95*. I was no where near a firestone dealer. A tow truck stopped and changed my tire for me and followed me to the closest town (about 30 miles away). There was only a small tire shop there (no firestone dealer) and i purchased the best used tire he had (he had nothing new in my size). When i got to las vegas the next day i went and puchased a new tire, but at this point i had stopped purchasing the exact same tire. I bought 2 different tires that were comparable and put the firestone as my spare. I haven't had another problem yet but now am scared to death of what's to come. My best friend's son was in a fatality crash (not him fortunately) 2 weeks ago in a 1999 explorer. They are now checking the totalled vehicle to see if it also had these tires on it and if so will be filing a complaint and possibly a law suit.( dot number: tire size: p235/r7515 )

On 3/30/000 while traveling from san diego to san francisco, i felt slight vibration in the rear of the vehicle which i assumed was a wheel slightly out of balance. I stopped for the night in pismo beach and on inspectionfound that the rear tires were separating.on one tire there was approx. An 18"tear between the steel? backed tread and the rest of the tire.the other rear tire also had a smaller separation starting. The damage was not immediately noticeable from a casual look at the tire. It was only by luck that we had planned to stop in pismo beach. Had we continued directly to san francisco. I suspect the tire would have come apart on the highway. Ihad both tires replaced the following morning with goodyear wranglers - rotating the remaining two atx's to the rear.the tires with the separation were not badly worn or underinflated.they still has a reasonable amount of tread left. I may be able to determine the mileage on them if i can find the original invoices or the tire stores have maintained a record - which i expect to be the case. My sonsometime borrows the vehicle during the summer and recently made a trip to los angeles up and down i5, which is both hot and fast.i would urge you to make a rapid determination as to whether these tires should be recalled.( dot number: )

I believe this problem could easily be repeated in a test and i would have done it if there wasn't a good chance that i could have zapped my computer at my expense.i think this is serious because if someone would have been walking on the sidewalk or been behind a car at an intersection i would have hit them.there should be a check in the program that prevents the valve from opening max if the engine is running.

Smoke filled the interior of the vehicle within 2 blocks of the start of a trip.the odor was clearly that of buring leaves or wood.driving was not possible.the dealer initially disbelieved that smoke was at fault, but rather escaping coolant must be the problem.after further investigation the dealer found debris in the ventilation system and cleaned it out, charging me $50.i was told not to park under trees.hardly possible in north carolina and surely not a design specification for an suv.a letter to ford's customer assistance center produced only a telephone call telling me that "ford stands behind its dealers"and that no further action from ford would occur.the problem still exists.for my own survival i now park only under a roofed area at home.

This is the second incident of this kind since i purchased thiscar in 9/1998.the first incident occurred in 2/99.i did not report that one, because i wasn't aware that i could.in both instances, i was driving and noticed that my car was acting stange, driving rough like a flat tire.i was able to pull over to the side of the road both times (guardian angel must have been watching out for me).i looked for a flat, and did not see one, so i proceeded to drive away, when the noise was much louder (metal against metal).when i got out of the vehicle, the right rear wheel (same wheel both times) was on a diagonal.all of the lug nuts were severed off and the wheel came off with just a pull.the second time this occurred (2/11/2002) i did report it to ford and to my insurance company.i am very concerned that this not happen to someone else, who may not be as lucky as i was.whenever i have my car serviced on a regular basis.i had new brakes installed in 7/2002, and that was the last time that my wheel had been worked on.i had my wheels checked after a few days, as i have aluminum rims.everything was fine, not too tight, etc.has this issue ever been brought up to you??thank you for any information that you can provide in this regard!i do not know anything about the vehicle prior to my purchase in 9/1998.
