I have gently driven this vehicle never went off road with it,changed the oil every 2500 miles, leased another car to preserve my suv, what i have now is an unsafe vehicle that is literrly falling apart, everything from the paint to the fasteners that hold the interior trim on is failing.i paid a lot of money for my suv and the ford motor company should take some responsibility.do i sound mad well wouldn't you be?

Engine hesitates then fails particularly at 90 degrees plus outside air temperature and engine under load.consequent loss of steering control, brakes etc and danger of negotiating traffic while attempting controlled stop.this has happened numerous times over the past two years.date given on previous page of report is most recent incident.problem does not occur in colder climate.problem is worse when operating air conditioning.engine must be off for 10 to 30 minutes before it will restart.depending upon conditions, vehicle can then be driven anywhere from less than a mile to idefinitely without incident repeating.have replaced edis at a cost of over $200 and problem now appears fixed.saw reference to ignition failure in tsb listing but apparently did not result in recall or voluntary repair by ford.now see articles in newspaper reporting nhtsa investigation of millions of vehicles (including explorer) over several model years.what recourse, if any, do i have at this point?has decison been made to mandate recall?encourage you to pursue vigorously.judging by the number of problems and repetitive repairs on this vehicle (including front brake pads/calipers that must be replaced frequently), i believe there were design flaws in this model that have safety ramifications and for which ford has not proactively taken responsibility.how will i know if/when a recall is initiated?

Starter failed. Radius arm needed replaced.air conditioner needed replaced.hydraulic control unit needed replaced.

Air conditioner caught fire under the hood. Fire started inside the air conditioner probably the fan speed resistors. Melted the left side of the housing where the resistors and fan are housed letting smoke and fumes in the car. In feeling around inside the blower hole you can reach up and feel the sheet metal where the wiper arms are and i think probably leaves got in and were blown on to the resistors when they were hot starting the fire. Damage included air conditioner housing, blower and motor, blower resistors, evaporator, sheet metal above the air conditioner housing and also melted the inner fender well. Not to mention the smoke and fumes that were blown into the car. To me this appears to be a design fault and it surprising that no one else has reported it. Luckily i was sitting still when it happened or it would have caused a crash due to the smoke and fumes.

I own a 1991 ford explorer ltx 4wd with a 4.0l engine.over the past 6 years i've had a reoccurring problem of the lights (headlights, interior lights, etc.) twinkling especially when idling.i'm in the military so i'm constantly moving thus dealing with different dealerships throughout this ordeal.i've had at least 6 new alternators and 3 new batteries installed and each time the problem reoccurs, usually just when the dealer's 12,000 mile warranty runs out or i move.i then take up the problem with the next dealership and spend another $200 for them to troubleshoot the electrical system.they immediately tell me it's a bad alternator and $150 later the problem still exist.they then say well it must be the battery.sure enough $90 later the problem is still there.this whole time though i've stated that neither could be the cause and they certainly do not refund my money for needlessly buying an alternator and battery.today while i was in an autoparts store a gentleman informed me that he had the same problem with his 91 explorer and that the defect was a recall item but i was unable to find it on your web sight.

Engine cooling system:aluminum head cracked block which forced anti-freeze to get sucked into engine.took in for dealer to look at and theysaid they the get themall the time.

1991 ford explorer cooling system was inadequate to cool the 4.0l v-6 engine adapted from the ford f100 series truck.i have talked to numerous owners who experienced the same problem.the engine cooks thermostats about every 2 years or 30000 miles.a am a marine and while i was deployed overseas for 6 months, my wife noticed that the temperature gauge was fluctuating significantly.she reported this to sanders ford in jacksonville, nc and was told it was normal.she explained that the temp gauge had never moved before but they insisted that it normally fluctuates.about 2 wks later, my wife noticed that it was loosing coolant constantly.she took the truck back to sander ford, in jacksonville, nc and after forfeiting $1478.32 and 2 days loss of the vehicle, her suspicion was confirmed that the cylinder head had warped.this common problem to the early model ford explorers has never been recalled by ford.more alarming is the propensity of ford dealerships to be dishonest and monopolizing in overpricing parts and service.we have observed this in ca, va, nc, and hi.ford motor co appears unable to control quality of service in its franchise dealerships.

I was having problems with the vehicle missing when going up hills and also rough idle at start up.i took the vehicle to napa, a aaa approved shop, with ase mechanics.there was a leaking head gasket which allowed antifreeze to get in the number 3 cyclinder and plug.when they took the head off to make sure it wasn't cracked they found the rocker arm assemblies and push rods had to be replaced.the push rod ends were worn to the shape of footballs and had worn indentations in the assemblies.this vehicle has never used oil.i change the oil/filter every 3 months.it has never been low on oil or overheated.the shop owner and the mechanic both said they think it is a design flaw and i should report it.parts had to be ordered from chicago because they were unable to find any in wa or or.the reason they were given was that these parts couldn't be kept in stock because of the high demand for them.i baby my vehicles and required service work is done on time.i do not feel that this problem is one of normal wear and tear.this cost me $1,493.41 to repair something which i don't think should have gone wrong.in this case an accident did not happen but could have if the rods had gone through the head while i was driving.

Complaint received via e-mail.the brake lights on my 1991 fordexplorer cannot be made to work consistently. This presents an obvious safety hazard to the drivers following my vehicle. When i hit my brakes they can't tell. I have been rear ended twice already, and i am tired of it. But fortunately the rear bumper is very strong, and only is bent in a little so far, since the vehicle behind hits the tow hitch, which is capable of towing 3,500 pounds. Raceway ford in riverside, californiaattempted to repair this problem by replacing the switch at least twice since 1997. I have not yet gone through the paper work before 1997 to see how many attempts were made to correct the design defect. Ireplaced the switchagain, and still cannot get the brake lights to work properly.

Original transmission failed 1/97, approx. 60000 miles. Rebuilt by transmission shop. Took back 4 times before they considered correct. Still not right. Clunked when slowing.. 2nd transmission failed 12/98. Driving 65 mph...just quit...rpm's started revving...barely got to side of road...have been told by every transmission shop i'm dealing with that the original transmission put into these explorers are very poor quality, plus almost impossible to rebuild correctly...all transmission shops, including ford only give 12,000/12 month guarentee...that's ridiculous...you assume a tranny should outlast the car...they all say the transmission is unreliable to match to original ford tranny put in...i am now out $1875 for first transmission and one year later am looking at another transmission repair ($1400-1600)...i feel ford should back their products and at least offer a rebuilt tranny in their own shops that is guarenteed for more than 12 months....this is what gives our american cars a very bad reputation....

After purchasing this ford explorer i check all fluids and added and changed as nessasary about 2 weeks after i purchased it my stepson and my wife and large dog went on a little trip to check out this thing, after letting out the wife and dog my stepson and myself tried to go up a slight hill in 4 wheel drive to see if it worked, after it wouldn't make it up the hill we backed it down and headed back for my wife when the left front tire wheel and brake assy fell off due to the plastic piece failing inside automatic hubs causing c clip to fail, i had to call my brother in law to get my truck and trailer to get this thing home where by skinning my knuckles on rocks trying to get this on a jack, i later went to ford to try to buy just damaged part they wanted 385 dollarsfor whole kit which now has a locking devise that will not allow the nut to freely spin off, i believe the newpiece is no longer made of plastic either, i went to junk yard and got a used plastic piece and made my own permant locking devise to keep this from happening again. Clutch cycling pressure switch failed, emitting musty odor from hvac system.

Periodically, when beginning to contact the clutch pedal and if the explorer operator's left foot is too high, the top of the foot will come in contact with the fuse box lever (between the parking brake lever and the hood release lever) underneath the steering column.this will disengage the fuse box from its secure position and lower the fuse box.on the next attempt to contact the clutch pedal, the foot will come in contact with the fuse box, hindering and possibly preventing the operator's ability to contact the clutch pedal and effectively operate the clutch.

Apparently the mazda std 5 spd sold in these trucks is destined to fail.it has so i'm told (recently saw when i was forced to get rebuilt do to dealer refusing to act on my complaint)three rubber plugs that are designed to fail.why they are there is beyond me.after a time they start to seep and cause transmission fliud to slowly leak out only when vehicle is running ie in gear.as the fluid drips out moving down road you don't notice it.once it gets low enough it causes tranny to overheat.i brought vehicle in the first time this tell tale sign of no clutch occurred.transmission shop told me that dealer should have at least test drove vehicle when i brought it in.of course when i got there it was working properly because it had cooled down, both outside temp & vehicle since it was parked while in lawyers office.i pointed out it looked like it was leaking something & they shrugged it off as probaly an oil leak.since they wouldn't even make an appointment for me to bring in @ a later date i took it to mean, since they're the experts that i didn't have a serious problem.well apparently i did because after about a month the input shaft was severed while i was driving on highway driving beside a 18 wheeler.luckily nothing happened to vehicle but woody anderson put my life in danger unnecessarily by ignoring my problem.i found out later the service mgr was aware of the problem w/ these transmissions but neglected to train his staff on it.their general mgr ki. Harris said to me on 12/15 that he was in business to service vehicles & he would do what would make me happy.well now it's me against the big dealership, for he has gone ack on his word.i need additional data to support my position from your data banks to show this is one a poor desigh & two a known problem was not conveyed to customer which could have resulted in serious injury if i lost power passing on a one lane road or similar situation where i could not avoid an accident .

Accident occurred in the afternoon of august 28th, 1999 in durham, north carolina.the accident involved my vehicle hitting a vehicle in front of me (i was travelling at about 35-45 mph and reached an intersection where traffic was stopped for the light.i hit the brakes and thought i had enough time to stop the vehicle, but i ended up rear-ending a truck (at the point of impact the car was probably travelling 5-10 mph)).anyhow when i received my car from the repair shop it rode extremely roughly.after taking it to a firestone dealer they informed me that my tread had 'separated' and told me the only solution was to buy new tires.this is all very circumstancial evidence (i realize), but after reading about other similar incidents regarding the same equipment, i felt compelled to report this accident as well in case the tire too were responsible.the faulty tires (2 of 4) have since been discarded.i would appreciate knowing whether the tire separation could have been related to the accident as i know think it may have (the tire's tread was not separated prior to the accident and the other tires which had been purchased at the same time are still roadworthy).( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Vehicle is a 1991 ford explorer xlt eddie bauer edition, 4x4 5-speed manual transaxle, 4.0l v6. Vehicle is equipped with rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. Both rear wheels perform uncommanded full lockup after medium application of brake pedal. Condition persists even when pressure to the brake pedal is removed. Vehicle skids to a stop. Full application of the brakes for several seconds is required to release the rear wheel brake drums and restore normal control to the driver. This could easily result in loss of vehicle control. Symptoms present regardless of weather/road conditions, vehicle speed, or maneuver type.

Brakes are grinding loudly, pedal feels spongy when applying brakes.dealer replaced front and rear pads/ calipers/ drums, and rotors.when making turns grindingbecame worse. Brakes were wearing out far sooner than normal.

My abs light came on while i was driving at approx. 5 p.m. On 4/28/2000.i continued with my daily activities and made a mental note to get this checked out.at approx. 6p.m. I was traveling at around 45 mph when a car cut in front of me.i hit the brakes, the rear tires locked up, and the vehicle went immediately into a 90+ degree slide, the vehicle rolled 1 full time and landed upright facing the lane i was just in.i've driven 3 cars without abs and i've never had the rear tires lock up so easily.

Majority of brake parts have been replaced over last 3 years and problem persists.rear brakes lock at all speeds and vehicle swerves to right.several brake experts cannot find problem.

The brakeslocked up when slowly being applied. Had to turn wheel to avoid being hit by another vehicle due to locked brakes. Hit a flat wall & was flipped over after going upa wall, instead.

Complete brake failure occurred when backing out of parking slot. Was able to stop vehicle with the parking brake. Failure of brake pipe, due to corrosion, just forward of rear axle. The two pipes from the junction block at the differential also badly corroded but not leaking. Changed these also as a precaution. Total loss of braking power was unexpected since i believed that there was a diagonal brake systen or other backup. In attempting to pump the brake once i stoped all i successed in doing was pumping brake fluid on the ground. This had the pontential for a serious accident since i would have been hauling a trailer in a few dats on a long trip.

Transmission went out, then the front main seal. It hasn't been two months and then my heater core went out and at the same time my heater fan. Also, before the front main seal went out the rotors went bad and i still have problems with the braking system. This has all happened within a years time. I am thoroughly disgusted and broke. I praised ford before this, now i wouldn't recommend ford to anyone i know. I am a single mother trying to make ends meet and now i have no transportation because i can no longer afford to fix this truck. I have replaced the transmission, front main seal, water pump, starter, rotors, alternator, and the low wheel drive on my truck but now its the heater core and i have been quoted over 600-800 to fix this! that is if i can find anyone who wants to do it which by the way no one does. What do i do now?

Copy of letter to fmc:i own a 1991 ford explorer 4wd xlt [xxx].i purchased this vehicle on 11/9/96, from crown dodge, ventura, california. The selling dealer assured me at the time that no recalls were outstanding on this vehicle.on november 11/22/06, as i closed the hatch on this vehicle, the bracket that attaches the right-side liftgate gas assist cylinder to the hatch tore away from the hatch.i have just learned that a safety improvement campaign (number 95i007000) was issued in october 1995 to reinforce this bracket.the campaign stated that "if a bracket and gas assist cylinder were to detach completely from the liftgate and no longer bear against the liftgate as intended, the remaining cylinder would not hold the liftgate in an open position.personal injury could occur."the corrective action was for ford dealers to reinforce the bracket attachments.my local ford dealer service representative stated today they could not honor this safety improvement campaign.rebecca (#6048) at the ford customer service call center told me the campaign had expired, and couldn't offer assistance.your company's response to date is not acceptable.the bracket was attached to the hatch by only two small spot welds, as is the left-side bracket.the failure still has the potential for causing serious injury, especially if the left-side bracket were to fail.the vehicle was apparently not repaired under this safety improvement campaign.i was not notified of the campaign nor offered an opportunity to have this defect repaired.since the safety hazard that this safety improvement campaign sought to resolve still exists on my vehicle, i request that the broken bracket be repaired and the remaining bracket reinforced at no charge to me, per the intent of the safety improvement campaign.thank you for your assistance.[xxx]updated 07/12/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Lift gate open the hydrolic lift bracket snapped off causing the liftgate to fall on my sons head.bracket was poorly welded. They claim that there was a recall aroung the time the car, but it is no longer in effect. The recall was to be reenforce the brackets. This is still a safety issue.

In 2001 the right side bracket attachment of the rear liftgate gas assist cylinder came off from the inside of the liftgate of my 1991 ford explorer.the remaining assist cylinder does not hold the liftgate in an open position. As i understand from nhtsa campaign id no 95i007000 over a million vehicles had the brackets reinforced, but my explorer wasn't included although in my opinion it clearly should have been. I haven't priced the repairs.

Vehicle's structural component is rusted.

There are huge corrosion holes under both rear doors. I noticed the same corrosion problem on all 1991-1993 ford explorers driven around.

The left and right rear rocker panels are rusted through. This is a common problem amoungst ford explorer's (1991-1994). Many auto bodyshops have confimed that this cronic problem is a a result of poor design of notadding drain holes in the rear proportion of the rocker panels. Though this matter is not a saftey factor it is very costly to repair.

While traveling on the local interstate, the tread on one of our rear tires separated.thank goodness it was at night and not much traffic.this occurred before the recall, we just thought that it was a fluke accident.the tire was replaced with the spare, which is also firestone, and another spare was purchased.now, we are having problems with the other rear tire -- we have called our local firestone dealer daily, but they have not received a shipment for recall replacements since the recall was issued.we are not in the position to make a major purchse of 4 new tires, and fear our safety.what in the world can we do?please advise -- i have contacted firestone, but only get their standard scripted answers.i also object to the way firestone is placing the blame of their faulty workmanship onto the customer and hot weather.if their tires cannot hold up to hot texas summers, then they should not be selling their product in texas.thank you for allowing me to vent.( dot number: )

We was on a trip to kentucy,( 9/24/99) we got right past the st. Joe missouri exit and the front end of my truck started shaking then i had a blow out. I was able to get off the road. I called a state patrol, who inturn called a wrecker, (randy's repair 169 hwy, gower, mo, 424-6232). He towed us back to his garage and replaced my tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

1st incident: steel belt broke and began flapping against rear left fender with terrific noise, car shaking, until broke off and could stop. Was traveling at 74 m/p/h. Could have been a fatal accident if faulty tire had been on front wheel.-2nd time car and steering wheelwobbling at 20m/p/h, suspected a similar problem on a tire. At a later opportunity, while pumping gas, discoveredr/front tire's steel belt showing thru outer tire (again steel belt breaking). Luckily discovered just in time.= 3rd time, car shaking at 65m/p/h. This time went to good year. They found the 3rd firestone tire separating. That was the final straw. Ihad all 4 firestone tires replaced with good year , wanted firestone to pay for the damage to my car from the 1st incident. To do so, they insisted on my sending them the damaged tire, which i did not have (left with firestone store when replacing bad tire). I consider firestone tires as very hazzardous, requiring constant vigilance. Would not want them ever again. My wife had to replace 2 of her firestone tires, also beginning to separate (car was shaking at 65 m/p/h). Same thing happened to one of my relatives. I recommend that you urge that ford changes its brand of tires on itc cars.( dot number: )

All firestone tires need to be investigated. The original firestone tires that came on my "91 ford explorer xlt and the subsequent replacement tires all developed cracks all around the tires where the tread meets the sidewall. I stopped buying firestone tires. The tires i now have, show none of these signs of cracking. Investigate all of firestone tires, there is a problem greater than currently acknowledged!!!

Left rear firestone atx tire experienced blowout, vehicle fishtailed and consumer lost control of vehicle, vehicle rolled and consumer was injured and pinned under vehicle, vehicle was totaled, tire size is p235/75r15, dot vdhl1pm136.

The rear tires belts appear to have seperated causing large knots all around the tread of both rear tire they even have bubbles on the inside of the tire.all of this happened in about a 30 mile trip, you could feel a wobble in the back that grow worse, and worse.if i had not pulled of to inspect them i am sure they would have blown.i still have the tires but don't know who to contact about them because i can't find a lemans tire company and there is no other manufactures name on the tires.

While driving, consumer experienced heavy vibration in the steering column, after having vehicle looked at, dealer replaced heavy duty shocks and 4 new tires.

On july 18, 1999, i was taking my daughter (15 at the time) to summer camp from henderson, nc to brown summit, nc.she was driving under her permit, and i was dozing.i was suddenly awakened by a sound like a machine gun, and the next thing i knew, we were spinning in circles across three lanes of i-40/85.we ended up spinning off the side of the road, but fortunately did not turn over.i found that my right rear tire (firestone wilderness at) had lost its tread, and that was the noise i had heard.a passing motorist stopped to see if we were ok, and he said that he didn't know how we avoided being creamed by an oncoming semi-trailer.the next day (monday), i went to a tire dealer in henderson, and forked out $400 for a set of michelin m/s tires.the dealer commented about the firestones, "oh, yeah, sometimes tread does come off like that."we were lucky, and all we suffered were psychological injuries, and damaged wheel well.i recently traded in the vehicle and purchased a new isuzu rodeo.( dot number: )

I found several recalls for my vehicle. It is an old vehicle, but i only bought it in 2003. I know some of them expired, and it says to contact fod. I did via web site. They do not show any recalls. But, you showed me over 5 recalls? can i still get them fixed? my tires i guess, have been replaced but they did nit replace the spare tire. I still have the recalled spare tire?? what do i do now? can i do anything? but, i still have bad tires, the 2001 tire recall does not say what brand? i have atx and apt firestone tires.campain #92v113000,91v189000,00t005000 and another tire recall, i did not get the #, but it was in 2001.thank you.

Tire separation occured on interstate 66, va.i did not lose control of the vehicle, because i was driving within the speed limit.however, the noise from tire separation caused some emotional stress.these tires are identical to "original equipment" when i purchased the vehicle.i would like to know if there have been any reported incidents with these tires, or possible recall. I have a 1991 explorer which i purchased new.when i recently inspected my spare for the firestone recall, i was reminded of a problem i found back in 1991 where when i lowered the spare for the first time there were 2 cuts on each sidewall of the tire;deep enough to cut thru the steel belts.this was caused by the frame chafing the tire while driving. Just a few more data points for the firestone investigation; two of the firestone atx tires that came as original equipment on my 1991 ford explorer experienced tread separation in mid 1995, causing body damage but no accident or injury. We took the tread from one to a local firestone dealer, who claimed it was "road hazard damage" and that he couldn't help us. The tires were always inflated to the psi recommended on the sidewall; they were not underinflated. (dot number: unknowntiresize: p235/75r15)

The tire peeled away and was flung up and hit the windshield on the driver's side. We were driving on the interstate and were going through two concrete bunkers in the midst of some road reconstruction with an 18 wheeler right on o ur bumper. He didn't see that the tire had exploded and bore down on us and to avoid being hit we had to ride on the rim while trying to control the truck until we could get out of the single lane of construction. We lost control of the truck after coming o ut ofthe bunker lane and went across the esplanade. We were able to come to a stop before going into the oncoming traffic but it bent the frame of the truck and ruined the rim. When we went to a firestone dealer at spring cypress and kuykendahl road in spring, texas we were told that the tires were our problem and we'd probably just picked up a nail. We had to replace the tires in that town.( dot number: )

Tires are showning signs of tread seperation , crack all the way around tires on sidewall just below tread area.you can stick a dime into crack in tires. Was told by ford & firestone that these tires are not part of recall and were ok. Firestone dealer told me that this was normal for tires on large suv's.my father has a 4 wheel drive chevy suburan equiped with unaroyal tires of the same size and no cracking or other signs of trouble have shown up.how do i get these tires replaced< my wife and 2 girls are not safe with these tires.( dot number: 8xhl tire size: 235/75r/15 )

I installed a lift kit and bigger tires.knowing that my speedometer would be off, i had a shop check it out for me and found that with the larger tires, the speedometer was almost perfectly matched to real speed (new tire size 31x10.5x15)this means that the orginal setup from the factory was off, therefore increasing the milage shown on my odometer, which has decreased the value of the vehicle, as well a, making the warranty end at a sooner date.

At the time of tire failure we weren't aware of the general problems, so we didn't keep the tire, get info on the dot numbers, etc.april 2000 incident, tire had a big bubble on it after slightly hitting it on the curb at a turn. We replaced the tire immediately.may incident the car skidded after taking a right hand turn and car spun around and hit the curb.we assumed this was purelya skid because of rain slick streets, but now are wondering if the tire failed first.we replaced the tire and paid for other damage (damage to the axle and several other related parts). 4 tires now on this car are the recalled tires, so we believe the failed tires were the recalled tires also.they were both wilderness at tires.it never occured to us to save info on the tires at that time.the car is currently at a firestone dealer having the recalled tires replaced.( dot number: n/a tire size: p235/75r15 )

It may pay to take this tire off of the rim and check and see if there is a nail or something in it that would have caused this tire to have gone flat. There is a spot on the back side. There looks like there is a hole in the back side of the tire. The front side of the tire looks like the tire has been run low for a long time. (claim# 25-5432-593) *mw

Twenty minutes into a 65 mph speed the right rear tread separated from the tire body causing a loud noise. The tire did not lose any air. The incident occurred at mid-day on a pleasent sunny day in central florida. There were no injuries only fright. The tire was original equipment on my 1991 ford explorer. The firestone manager told me the tread separation was due to the tires age since it was manufactured in march 1991. I bought a new set of four atx replacement tires after hearing the firestones' manager's comments. If they stay in one piece they give mileage over 90,000 miles which no other tire can match, maybe that's why the tread comes off -- it's too heavy with tread. ( dot number: )

On dec 23, 2004, my 1991 ford explorer caught fire while i was driving it. The vehicle was destroyed. The vehicle had 208,000 miles on it. It had been professionaly serviced a week prior to the fire. While i was driving, i noticed a burning smell. I looked in the rear-view mirror & saw some white smoke behind me. Within seconds the engine died. By the time i got it pulled onto the shoulder, smoke was streaming out from under the hood. The fire burned through the firewall and caught the interior on fire very quickly.

My wife [xxx] was driving my 1991 ford explorer to see her son on 2-2-04( and never uses cruise control)when on hwy 161 heading north the cruise control took over and made the throttle stick wide open, the brakes would not hold and vehicle went up to about 70 before she finally turned off key, the brakes were smoking from about 1 mile of fighting to stop the thing, she finally stopped after hitting a truck in front of blackstone collision, whose owner demanded she remove it due to blocking driveway, (2) salesmen from jet chev saw the whole thing and since the other drivers vehicle was not badly damaged he wanted to leave, the salesman started the ford explorer and it was still floored he was able to move it and parked it, he also unstuck the throttle thereby destroying evidence,my insurance co. Was going to go after ford but didn't , so we were cancelled and now i pay twice as much due to ford defects they need to own up to this. Veh id[xxx]my wife had to go to hospital for 2 cracked ankles due to this as x rays were taken within 4 hrs of wreck (she had both feet on brake pedal trying to stop it.) i am going to also report another incident from this same vehicle, mfg defect. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

The contact owns a 1991 ford explorer.after receiving the recall notice for the vehicle speed control: cruise control, the contact called the dealer.the dealer stated that they did not have the part for the repair; however, the recall stated that they were available.they did not know when the parts would arrive.there had been no failure to date.the recall number was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 81,000.

While driving vehicle out of office garage, gas pedal suddenly went straight to the floor, the engine was racing, vehicle took off, tried to stop vehicle by applying brakes, vehicle slammed into a building, smashing the front of vehicle.

Smoke and flames from all ac vents while driving, fire consumed entire vehicle. Fire report, pictures & insurance report available. Reported to ford motor company. No positive results.

Debris, leaves and mouse found within the heater system coil causing smoke to enter vehicle.

A/c system; the connection in system are faulty due to design. Joints weaken causing full load of freon dumped in air. This occured (3) times since ownership.

Upon starting vehicle and driving approximantly one mile i turned on the heater and started smelling a burning smell and cab filled with smoke. I stopped the vehical and turned it off. Smoke was so thick i had to exit the vehical. Upon investigation under the hood i could find no source of fire or damage to the truck.i used the heater the following day and have had no further problem. This seems to match up with the feb,23 1999 newspaper artical i read. I am intrested to know what might have caused this.

Confirmation info...columes doesn't my info....but to add transmission was replace, was informed vehicle was repainted by aaa, brakes went out, replaced cable wires to battrery- wired coat hanger pieces in with cable wires...

While driving down the highway, with the a/c running, all of sudden black smoke starting pouring out of the heating vents, vehicle caught on fire. After five or ten minutes, driver restarted engine and was able to drive truck home. Dealer found leaves and other debris inside the blower system which caused the problem. The problem was corrected at owner's expense. Please provide any further information.

For about a yearthere was at times a smell of something burning when the vehicle was started.in january, 1999 smoke porede out of the dash and the heater blower stopped working.burning leaves in the air intake.now the vent systems exude a burnt smell and the interior of the car is permeated with the smell.the blower motor relay (or switch?) was replaced by an independent mechanic.how do we avoid another fire?how do we get rid of the smell?

Continue to get smoke/burning smell thru ventilation sys. Even after repair to blower

Whenheater is turned on there would be a burning smell inside the vehicle. Have taken to repair shop & mechanic found leaves, pine needles and other debris inside the heater system.

Heater motor fanwas blowing smoke into vehicle which was caused by an electrical short in motor. Dealer notified, and they infomed vehicle was not under a recall.

The transmission problem was a shaft that snapped. Valve gaskets are inferior material. Have been tightened, but still leak.
