Since the car was first bought the engine has been extremely loud as well as shaking occasionally when stopping at a traffic light.i spoke with my salesperson, who was friendly and took it on a test drive again, and he found nothing wrong.he said it was probably due to the cold weather, but told me to take it to my local dealer to have it looked at as a precaution.i went to the local dealer and they would not see me then so i asked to make an appointment for a better time.i was told that no appointments could be made and they accepted cars on a first come first served basis. Since neither dealer is located close to me, i decided to wait a while to see if it was just the weather.in february, the air bag light came on and would not go off for 2 days and since then it will come on and stay on for a while, and sometimes it will turn off after a few days.this is a major concern because i don't want it to come out unexpectedly or to fail when needed.i went to the same local dealer 2 days ago and they would not see me.at first, the man tried to make me think it was all in my head, but after insisting on having it checked out anyway, he told me they could not see me and that i would have to make an appointment.i explained that i had tried to before, but was told i couldn't and he basically told me to call later to set up an appointment.since a failure could cause a tragic accident i don't know where else to turn to have ford check the car.it is only 3 months old and this is the 4th time i have had to see about it which makes me leary of either the quality of fords or that my car is not up to the same safety standards as it should be.please help.i also saw on the news last night that several ford cars are being recalled now due to safety concerns so i would like to make sure my car is safe before me or someone else gets hurt.i would appreciate any assistance you can give me, and please let me know what steps to take.

I just want to complain that i feel ford motor co. Should offer a subsidie for owners of 1999 ford escort zx 2 automobiles for the addition of disengagment switches for their front passenger side air bags devices. I am aware that newer models come equipped with this feature. I was advised by ford motor co. That they actually encourage people to make this addition to their cars for safety purposes. I contacted my local ford dealership and was told by the serviceperson that in the ten years "he or anyone working there" had never performed a "switch addition" i asked him if it would be expensive and he said probably yes and that he would call ford and see exactly what could be done. He said he would call me back. He has never called back.i have three kids and there is only two seatbelts in the back. I want to be able to let my eleven year old ride in the front, but i am afraid of the airbag. Now that it is standard(switches) on the 2001 and newer cars i feel there should be some cost shared by ford motor co. In performing this upgrade. I feel it should be a "recall" for this addition.

My then 20 year old daughter was driving our 1999 escort zx2. She stoped at a stop sign, and as she began to accell. The air bags deployed for no reason. She was shaken up, and burned on her face and arms. I reported this to ford motor company, they told me because the vehicle was out of warranty, they would not be responsible and would not even inestigate the concern. They advised me to contact my insurance co. I contacted farmers ins. They said that since there was no accident it was not covered. However they agreed to pay for a portion of the investigation. A report was made by an independant co. They recommended taht the air bag module be removed and sent to a qualified engineer for evaluation. North point ford in n.l.r. Ar. Removed the part, and farmers sent it to be evaluated. In the mean time my vehicle is damaged and no one will help. I have not heard anything more from farmers, as of 1-31-05. I know that ford has recalled other year model escorts for the same possible concern, but they refuse to help me or even investigate. I had esp to 100,000 miles , i carry full coverage insurance, andthis kind of damage and injuryis not covered , this does not seem right to me . Is there anything more i can do. Please advise.

I purchased a 1999 ford escort from carmax in may of 2001.about 2-3 wks later i constantly had problems with the headlight going out.i got ticketed by the police several times because i was unaware of the problems.then one day driving from work my engine died.without any warning at all.i took it to carmax and they then took it to another repair shop.whenever i put the ac on there is a rumbling coming from the front end of the vehicle.frankly the car is a lemon and i had no idea because there was no reports on the car and i remembered asking the sales rep.if there was anything about the car that i needed to know and i was told no.please let me know if there is anything that i can do because i am spending money on this car for manufacturer problems.thank you.

I was out of town, drove for 2 1/2 hrs then parked for shopping. Was on way back home..10 min into drive, when my ford escort zx2 just lost all power while driving on the highway.i had little warning..a minute before it was running rough then nothing..no gauges or steering etc.i had the alternator replaced (did not think to keep the old part) and havereplaced several fuses "just because" since it keeps doing this and the scary part is i bought it for my son who is a new driver and he had it happen to him twice in one day and twice to myself the next day.wewere able to get it back home after jumping it twice in 8 miles the last two times it quit.it is now parked fearing we will be stranded or worse lose control and end up in an accident due to loss of headlights, steering etc.

I purchased my se in november of 2006 with less than 83k miles on it. Three months after purchasing it, one of the head gaskets cracked. I had the head repaired, and less than two months after that the head cracked again. I had the engine replaced. I have now had new heads, new engine, new fuel pump and a new alternator installed and now am having a new problem. When i pulled out from a stop, the brake light would come on until the brakes were applied. The engine is now emitting a grinding noise when stopped, and i feel it is unsafe to drive. This is all in addition to the violent shaking, faulty front headlight, transmission that needs flushed and loud engine noise. I have spent more on repairs than i paid for the vehicle, and now have to put more money in to it, and it still has less than 94k miles on it. This is my first ford, and will be my last.

The vehicles horn stopped blowing.the consumer feels that the horn is a safety issue, and other drivers need to be made aware.tsthe repair f the horn would require the replacement of the air bag.scc

Membrane switch for horn stuck in closed position causing horn to blow constantly.wire to horn had to be pulled to remedy problem.membrane switch not available from dealer.dealer states entire air bag assembly must be replaced at a cost of over $500.not having an operational horn or logical and economical way to repair is a safety hazard.i have read several of the same complaints which seems to indicate some sort of defect in safety equipment.dealer benefiting by huge replacement cost.part should be made available or mandatory recall is necessary.

While making a left turn, consumer honked the horn and it would not stop blowing, consumer was forced to pull the fuse in order to stop the horn.

The car will inconsistently not start.i have been having this problem since july of 1998 (it began mildly and continued to get worse), and the dealer has been contacted.they have replaced one part, but after several weeks after the problem began again.now i am waiting for ford to come out with some computer configuration.when you turn the key sometimes it will be totally dead, sometimes it will begin to idle, as long as you keep pumping the accelerator (recommended by my dealer), however, the second you remove your foot from the accelerator the car "shuts off."once the car does start (usually after trying 10 times) it runs very rough.when i have brought the car into the dealer they have attempted to duplicate the problem, but are unable to do so.about 10 days before christams, i brought the car into my dealer and they again, for the third time or so attempted to duplicate the problem.they returned my car to me the following day when i learned of a possible computer configuration that ford was coming out with.it is important to not that the problem was duplicated when they first changed the initial part.they have run various tests and feel that the part replaced (fuel injection censoring)is not causing the problem after all.this is where i currently stand with my car.some mornings it starts and some it does not.i have had occurrences where the car will start in the morning, i will drive 20 min. To work.park the car and attmept to start it 4 hours later and it will not start.there have been times that it will not even start after 20 minutes of resting times.

Vehicle has continuously stalled.dealer was contacted and vehicle was brought in due to vehicle would turn off while idle, vehicle would not go when the gas pedal was pushed and then finally the vehicle just would not start.dealer informed that the wiring harnest as well as the computer needed to be replaced.this was able to be figured out after the third time due to the fact that the check engine light did not come on until the third time, in which the dealer informed that they could now find what was wrong, unlike previous times when the car would not stall for them.

On 06/30/99 at 02:10 hours the crystal fire department responded to a vehicle fire in the back lot of elk county ford. The department found a new, 1999 ford escort se (vin #[xxx]) burning in the area of the left front tire and wheel well area. The cause of the fire was determined to be a short in the wiring in the vicinity of a "block" of relays and fuses in the left side of the engine compartment. The vehicle had not been operated recently (2:00 am in a small community car dealership).

Since 2001, i have had my car serviced at ford and sears repair shop to address my complaints that when my car is stationary it has excessive vibration. I was told by many ford shops that it was nothing that i need to replace the motor mounts. It was replaced the mounts and it last long and still the vibration continued. Recently, i took my car toa local repair shop regarding that same complaint and they found it is an "engineer defect: engine-idle vibration". Can this be repaired by ford and at no cost to me?

While driving , the car lost power and the steering wheel was hard to turn, after coming to a stop, we tried to start the car up again it bsounded like it wanted to turn over but didn't after a few tries it stopped making any noise. A mechanic said the engine blew and that it was a on going problem for this year and make of car.the engine was put in the car when we bought it, it was advertised as new so the previous owner must have had thishappen to them and knowingly sold us their problem.please we need help.

The contact owns a 1999 ford escort.the contact stated that the engine dropped two valve seats.as a result, two cylinder heads failed.while driving 30 mph, the vehicle performed as if it were not receiving any power and then shut off.there was no compression, but the vehicle still drove poorly.the contact also heard a disturbing, chopping noise under the hood.she purchased a rebuilt engine and had the transmission sensors replaced; however, the engine failed again six months later.the contact purchased a new engine, which was supposed to be under a lifetime warranty, but the failure recurred and the engine needed to be replaced again.both the dealer and manufacturer offered no assistance.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was approximately 142,000 and failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Company states they do a comprehensive inspection, sell high quality used vehicles, meet customers personal needs, and back their product. No inspection was done, only cosmetic repairs to sell the car. No inspection report can be produced except the repairs before car was put on lot. This vehicle is far from the high quality. We have had this vehicle back in the shop 14 times in 14 months. It did not meet the 4 personal needs we requested. Everything with those needs has gone completely wrong! we did not want a ford; we got a ford, it is not reliable. We have beendealing with theacat the shop 7 times, now rendering the car disabled.it is not reliable, keeps breaking down. It does not get good mileage; car gets 21 mpg when it should get about 35-38 according to mfg. Warranty was burned by miles going back and forth to shop for constant repairs. 700 miles for the same issue- the ac. Service issues are that they have not found the route of the problem and we keep having to go back to get the same thing fixed. Owner is uncooperative, wont listen, always comes back with responses and replies that go in circles. He will not listen. We have been asking for a different car since two weeks after we bought thiscar; when we found out the car was unsafe to be put on the road. Within two weeks it was in the shop for broken motor mounts, broken transmission mounts, bad fuel pump, worn brake pads to metal. Which were worn in two weeks after they were changed because of a warped rotor. We had told them there was a shake in the car when we did a test drive. They said it would happen to a ford. We did not want a ford! we were desperate because our car was disabled, old and ready for the junkyard. We were broke and could not come up with a down payment. This was the only place that advertised no down payment. We did not need to repair credit as most people who go here. We were approved everywhere, just had no down payment.

Since the purchase of my car at 12,000 miles, it has shaken and vibrated violently.when i run my defrost or a/c the problem gets worse and my car stallsout.i have replaced the transmission at 30,000 miles and replaced everything the dealership instructed.on july, 18, 2003 i made my final attempt to correct the problem.i took the car to the ford dealer and again specified the problem and showed them exactly what i was experiencing.i picked it uplater that afternoon they had replaced the valve again that i had just replaced in january 2003.i turned on my car and ran the a/c and i saw no improvement.so i asked to speak with a manager who told me that this is a common problem that my car shouldn't stall anymore but they have done everything they can do to correct this problem.basically, we purchased a $13,000 dollar car that never ran right and can not be remedied.no one has a solution and i'm expected to be satisfied with a car that shakes non-stop.if ford knows this is occuring they need to notify customers before they purchase the vehicle, instead of letting them drive away in a car that can never be fixed.i have lost all respect for ford and will never purchase a vehicle from them again.

1999 ford escort, 5 speed manual transmission, station wagon:oil leaked through the camshaft bolts into the manual clutch assembly, causing it to gum up and eventually fail to disengage the transmission.symptoms included the car lurching forward when starting the engine with the clutch fully depressed, and a thumping sound when the clutch was depressed while driving.the clutch was replaced at owner's expense by kayser ford in madison wi; unclear what was done with the old parts.

There is a knocking in engine, when car is driven, louder the knocking gets. My 1999 ford escort excessively stalls, idles low and acts like it is choking when i have come to a stop or i am starting the car. The car stalls when coming to a stop at stop lights.it seems like when these cars reach a certain temperature they shutdown.i have taken my car to the dealer and they were unable to fix the problem.they had me change the mass airflow sensor, throttle body, replace engine mounts, repaired the transmission twice and the car still stalls and the transmission continues to go bad.i have done research on other consumers complaints about this vehicle type and have noticed that they are experiencing this same problem.there needs to be a recall of this vehicle type and consumers need to be reimbursed for money spent on repairs. Please have this investigated because the cars are unusable and dangerous.this sudden stalls when driving can cause a major accident. *la

Ok, so i just bought my 1999 ford escort zx2 on december 1, 2008 at 82,000 miles.2 months later i needed to replace my alternator in february 2009.in may 2009 my engine blew, apparently the #1 rod separated and went through the oil pan.i replaced the engine since i still have a loan on the car.it is now july 2009 and my transmission is slipping.i only have owned this car for less than 8 months and repair costs are more than what i paid for this.unfortunately i can't get rid of it because i don't have enough money for a better car and now i am in this endless cycle of repairs.

Vehicle vibrates violently becauseengine motor mountsbroke.dealer has inspected vehicle, and counld not fix the problem.

We are having a vibration problem with our ford escort. I took the car in for service with the description "it's idling rough". The service center came back to me with a "technical service bulletin" from ford outlining a procedure to limit vibration. Apparently, the vibration stems from inadequate/improper engine mounts in this model escort. The service outlined requires changing the type of parts used in mounting the engine, and the tsb contains instructions for modifications to be done by the repair center prior to installation. Ford is obviously aware of this situation, as the tsb also states this affects escorts from 1997-2002, escort zx2 from 1998-2003, and the tracer from 1997-1999. We were told the repair bill to fix this would be $380.00! i don't feel i should have to pay to have this defect fixed. I contacted ford, and was basically told "sorry , we're not going to fix this, it is your responsibility."the problem came to my attention because everythiung in the passenger compartment not screwed down rattles like a one-man-band. This has gotten progressively worse over the last year, and has been attributed to problems in the engine tuning. Thanks to a well-informed service technician, i now know the real cause of the problem. I feel that left unchecked, the vibrations could cause more serious problems in the future on the car, and i would like to see some action taken to see that ford corrects this defective part on my car.

I own a 1999 ford escort se, 4 door. About a week ago i took it into the local ford dealer and was told all four motor mounts were bad. A counter person looked up vehicle notices and (i think) found a service bulletin on motor mounts for 2001-2003 escorts. My question is, how can all four motor mounts go bad at one time unless it is shoddy equipment to begin with. I have never heard of all four going bad. In all the vehicles i have owned i do not think i have ever had any motor mount replaced. Have any other similar problems like this been reported?

Vehicle had less than a year when a metalic knocking noise started from the engine. The lifters & other parts has been replaced several times since the begining of the year 2000. Car still has the noise after many attempts to correct the problem and the ford international still does not want to claim the vehicle a defect. The second band of the transmision broke into many parts and the technition of bayamon ford said it was the first time he had seen this on this type of vehicle. He has seen this in explorer & expeditions, but not on ford escorts. Bayamon ford nor auto vega has been able to fix thisthis problem in more than a year. I also would like to add that another recurring problem in this car is that the headlight socket keeps melting. This is a fire hazzard and it is a recurring problem after replacement of headlight fixture. I noticed that the negative wire is thinner than both of the positive wires, thus causing the over heating & causing it to melt. Another recurring problem is that about every 6 months i have to take the car to the dealer to replace the front struts because they are shot. I would like to get a technition to properly do its job and not to put myself or other people in danger because he/she does not want to blow the whistle on a problem.

I had to put an engine and transmission in my car last year.now my ac doesn't work and i recently had to replace the battery and put a new alternator in it too.i have had issue after issue with my zx2.

Noticed that engine warning light was coming up on and off, changed spark plugs, wires, light would go off for a period and than come back on. I was driving down the freeway between 65-70 miles/hour when i hured a loud bang , pulled off the freeway, i had the car taking to a local ford dealership, service writer told me that the valve seat in the head had seperated and fell into the motor. He also told me that the 1.9 motor had a flaw in the head and ford motor company new about this problem for many years. Than he showed me another escort that6 had the same exact problem and that this was not the first car he seened with this problem. Second problem: i have had to replace 3 transmitions with in a year, which was covered by ford motor company and possibly a 4th. I don't know because the motor went. Third problem: while at a stop sign a was rear ended an about 30-35 miles/hour, my seat bellt did not hold me and my seat collepsed on top of my child who was in a car seat behind me. The car was in the shope about the week before the motor went and they told me that the problem had to do with the transmition but i believe that the computer in the car new that the valve was prepering to fail. I was also told that the ford motor company had redesigned the head, so this problem could not happen again.

On 12-11-04 while returning home from work, i heard a loud noise coming from the engine and the car stalled. At first i though it was the timing belt. I took the car to a local shop who said that the timing belt had been stretched and had actually skipped gears. They replaced the timing belt and upon starting the vehicle, they heard a loud noise from the engine. They removed the spark plugs to find that the #4 plug had been broken due to an impact from the engine. After contacting the spark plug manufactuer, they said that this was a known problem with ford 2.0 engines manufacturered between 1991 and 2000. Ford used a powdered metal valve seal instead of a stainless steel one which over time breaks apart and falls into the engine damaging the engine. As a result, the engine must be replaced.

In 1999 we purchased a ford escort.within the first 6 months, the check engine light came on. We took it in and they said there was nothing wrong with the car, that sometimes a new car would do that just by going over a bump.within the next two years the car developed some really weird problems. Diagnostics were done, parts changed and money paid.no change. The car will stall after being driven for a while, especially in the summer.now it stalls constantly.we have taken it to five different mechanics plus the ford dealership again, and no one can tell us what the problem is. Diagnostics are constantly being done. Parts changed "just to see" and more and more money has been spent and nothing has changed except it is getting worse.my daughter is now expecting her first child and the car is hers.we are afraid to let her drive it anymore because of its instability. Ford keeps telling us to bring it back to them and they'll diagnose the problem...they haven't been able to yet and now they won't even respond anymore.so ford is ultimately the problem...along with their car.we don't know what to do now.we can't sell the car this way.we can't afford to buy another one without selling this one first.do we have any recourse at this point?

Poor motor mount caused the car to vibrate while driving.

I wasn't able to get an inspection sticker due to the broken spiral codes. The mechanic told me that this problem generally should not happen for the car which is quite new and has low mirage like mine. He mentioned that the spiral codes must have been defected because he found so many of newer ford cars had the same problem. He suggested me to ask ford company for any re-call information. I called ford and explained it but there was no re-call or no financial aides to fix the problem. I had to cover the cost, about $400, by myself. I still believe that the spiral codes were defected from the beginning. I firmly request for a strict investigation.

The smell of gas fumes in the passenger compartment is subtle while the car is in motion. When the car idles the fumes increase in intensity. The dealer was unable to find the cause and claimed they did not experience the problem when they tested it. *yd

While driving a pipe had snapped, causing fuel filter to leak.

Sometimes vehicle will not start and sometimes it will, fuel pump replaced twice, nov/00 & jan/01. Cj

My daughter purchased a used 1999 ford escort from cooper ford, camden n.y., first 9 months with car okay but as soon as cold weather set in she started having fuel pump failures. This failure causes sudden shut down of vehicle, total loss of power. The first ocassion was winter of 2001-2002, problem re-occurred 12-27-02 and 1-28-03. Dealer insisted that the problem was fuel related that these fuel pumps were sensitive to additives in fuel. I believe there is an underlying problem that is beingoverlooked or troublshooting by technicians is inadequate. If fuel was source of problem every other vehicle in this area would be affected also and i am unaware of any mass exodus of fords into the dealers for new fuel pumps. The possibility for a serious accident exists as long as this problem remains unresolved, the sudden and complete shutdown of a vehicle at highway speeds or when pulling into busy traffic etc. Could result in serious or fatal consequences. In conversations with ford motors customer service i was told that they had no record of this type problem with other vehicles of this type. Technicians at dealer have been communicating with factory regarding this problem and all the engineers could come up with is a "fuel problem" .apparently little or no failure analysis is taking place as to why one particular vehicle would need 3 fuel pumps in approx. 13 months and only in the winter time. Any assistance in this matter would be helpful for all intents and purposes my daughter has to drive a "timebomb" that we in good conscience can't sell with this defect. Thank you. I hope i never have to fill out the lower portion of this page!

Vehicle stalls intermittently and fails to start intermittently.dealership said the first time that it was a fuel pump failure, second time it was a defective fuel pump, third time it was the fuel sensor and fuel module.now doing it again.reported to the dealership awaiting report on this fourth incident.

While sitting at a stop and making a left turn another vehicle rear endedconsumer'svehicle, in which consumer's vehicle was air bound about 50 feet, causingdriver's seat and passenger's seat to go backwards.also, switch for the gas unit system didn't shut down, and the motor kept running.

While driving down the road another vehicle ran consumer off the road and lost control of the vehicle , and hit a tree.it caught on fire.had the vehicle towed.was toldthat the fuel line, which was partly plastic, wasknocked loose and fuel leaked on it, causing a fire. Consumer didn't contact dealer.

The power steering pressure line blew out of the pump as we backed out of the garage. The pump quickly emptied its oil supply onto the serpentine belt, engine bay & the driveway. It appears as if the retaining o-ring was sheared in half as the male fitting blew out of the retaining nut that attaches it to the pump. I have digital close-up pictures of the failed part if desired (e-mail). There is no excuse for this totally disabling failure in a 2 yr old car!!

Fuel injection system is leaking from the fuel pump, cause unknown.please give any further details.

Under carriage is separating.spot welds are breaking.fuel tank straps are not secured for tank, which causes it to move around.structural integrity of vehicle is compromised because of spot welds.windshield tilts towards driver.passenger's door inrear of the station wagon would pivot and was getting worse.

While driving and with no warning hood latch snapped, causing hood to fly open, distracting consumer's view, and causingconsumer to pull over. Dealer notified.

Hood latch mechanism does not properly latch which could causehood to fly up whilevehicle is being driven. The cable to the hood release is the problem.

While driving home from work at 65 mph, both hood latch and safety latch failed allowing hood to open and wrap over the top of the car.

The contact owns a 1999 ford escort. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and no occupant inside, the vehicle rolled backwards and crashed into another vehicle. A police report was filed. The contact stated that the gear shift lever was in the park position at the time. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. The vin was not available.

Car idled at 4-5 rpm but was not accelerating. Felt tremendous pulling when trying to accelerate. Upon deceleration all service lights came on and car shut down.

Intermittentlyvehicle will not engage into reverse.when it does engageit will accelerate unexpectedly. Dealer has repaired and inspected the vehicle several tmes, andproblem still exists.

Not only was my rebate check stolen by someone working at the dealership but i have complained so many times since purchasing my car.i believe that i 've been given the run around because i've just past qualifying for california's lemon law.my car is unsafe it rolls back on hills and now it won't go into park.i've had problems since buying the car. No safety defect.

Dt:1999 ford escort.the consumer statedthe gear shiftermalfunctioned.it didnot go into 2 or 1 gear.the vehicle was fixed last year on august 3, 2004.the dealership was contacted, and they statedthese gears should not be used.the entire shifter assembly will need to replaced at this time.the problem started approximately two years ago, it started shifting hard.this caused something in the mechanism to bend.the remedy did not last a year.this problem washappeningall of the time.

While driving at 45 mph downshifted to second gear and was making a right, lost control of vehicle. Consumer had no brakes/no powersteering, andvehicle went across on the other side of the road about 137 feet andend up on the passenger's side.

Catasthropictransmission failure while going 75 mph on freeway.engine runs fine. Vehiclewould not go forward or reverse. No previous problems or sign(s) of impending failure. Would likemanufacturer to do material failure analysis.

The vehicle will not properly engage into reverse.when it does engage it accelerates suddenly . Dealer hasinspeced and repaired the vehicleseveral times.

While shifting gears, the vehicle failed to move on its own.the consumer tried to shift the gears and a knocking noise was heard coming from the front. The consumer was able to drive the vehicle tothe dealer for an inspection.the mechanic informed the consumer that the transmission needed to be replaced.

With no warning or early signs, transmission burned up.drove fine the night before, woke up the next morning and had not transmission.transmission fluid was black.had to get entire transmission rebuilt.

Transmission had to be replaced 3 times because it went bad within at 47,000 miles while driving transmission made a noise like it was straining to go into gear.it felt likevehicle was being driven in secondgear instead of drive. Dealership only replacedtransmission, but didnot provide a cause for the problem.

Transmission light came on.dealer determined transmission needed to be replaced. On april 26, 2002 transmission light and engine check light illuminated again. Transmission had to be replaced. Consumer stated both times transmission was dragging.

Gears are not changing properly.transmission is sticking. Please provide any further information.

While shifting vehicle into reverse heard a loud noise, and running rough. Also, vehicle would not gain speed. Vehicle was serviced. Technician stated transmission needed to be replaced.

Failure of transmission for 1999 ford escort purchased new. I bought this for my then 72 year old mother who put 29,000 miles on the car.

Transmission very erratic while driving. While driving, the transmission will shift up and down all the time. Also makes a whinning noise on occasion.

When vehicle is put into reversegear, it does not engage.the dealership indicated the problem was the automatic transmission and that it needed to be replaced.

Whenever the car is shifted into gear it jumps forward, and then back out of gear again.dealer says it needs new transmission.

Our zx2 has been nothing but trouble! on 9-10-02 (29,183 miles) $342.30 worth of work was done on the brake system: friction reline, disc pads, brake shoes, rotors, drums, disc hardware (which was broken), shim kit, return springs (weak), bleed & adjust, and bearing pack. On 6-19-03 (37,829 miles) we had to have the complete transmission replaced. The cost for this was $1560.07, but since our warranty had just expired our local mechanic had firend at a ford dealer who gave us the 'good faith' policy and we only paid half. Gee...what a bargain for a 4 year old car. 2 months later, our a/c went out. W delayed repair due to $. On 2-10-04 (44,000 miles) the housing and water pump broke. This is a huge metal piece which the mechanic said he'd had never seen break. It snapped like plastic. The cost of this was $509.47. On 2-24-04 (44,428 miles) we had to have the battery and cabels replaced which cost $117.58. On 3-22-04 we repairedthe a/c(45,524 miles). The technician found constant control relay module faulty. This cost $375.76. On 4-25-04 (@ 45,700 miles) another huge metal piece broke! it was the serp. Tension housing and belt. The mechanic again said he has never seen that problem, special ordered the part from a ford dealer who was also shocked. This cost us $195.96. So far, we have sunk $2321.11 into this car. The worst part is that we still owe on it.may of '04 we went to lou grubb ford and were told that they were not responsible because our oil changes were not done at a ford dealer!ford field engineer denied seeing us. The fordc.s. Woman said, "well, i guess it's time to trade in the car. People trade in bad cars all the time". I have issues knowing that some poor soul will own this money trap. We have written 3 letters to the ford headquarters in dearborn, mi, but have had no response.it shakes & idles like it could die at any time!i would love to see a class action suit. I will never buy a ford again if this is their idea of 'built ford tough'.

1999 escort automatic transmission was completely replaced at 30,906 miles (6/8/2001). 35,386 miles later (3/30/2004), the differential assembly blew up and destroyed the automatic transmission. Ford's customer support cntr on 4/6/04 said i would be responded to within 3 business days. I tried e-mailing them again, and i still have no response. A total of 66,292 miles and two new transmissions broken. Today is six business days later.i feel i am now being ignored by ford. They know i have bought 8 ford cars/trucks since 1977. I have dmv records for 6 of them.

I had to put an engine and transmission in my car last year.now my ac doesn't work and i recently had to replace the battery and put a new alternator in it too.i have had issue after issue with my zx2.

Vehicle lunged forward while in neutral, causing a front end collision withgarage wall. Dealer has been contacted, and informed consumer thatoil pan was dented.also, vehicle will not shift into reverse. Please provide further details.

Brake shift interlock will not disengage. Cannot shift out of park after starting car. Required to use manual override procedure of sticking a screwdrive down a small hole near the gearshift. (this procedure is listed in the owner's manual). Dealer has been contacted. This should not happen on a new car. Fuses checked w/o problem.

When trying to brake car would stall trying to put in reverse wouldn't go trying to put it in drive wouldnt go transmission was replaced and it is doing the same ting again intermittently.

When pressing gas accelerator pedal, car does not move.car hesitates when starting from a stop. Occasionally (about 1 of 2 times) the car will shut down and check engine lights and other service lights appear.the transmission was replaced once already on 11/29/00. Transmission further complained about on 1/15/01 and 8/9/01 - told there was no problem. The car has been towed by aaa twice in past two weeks. 5 mechanics cannot diagnosis the problem. Also, when car is idling, in gear, the whole car shakes.

While in reverse position, the vehicle jumps forward which may cause a crash.dealer replaced transmission system.please provide further information.

10/09/99 nelson ford supposedly fixed a problem with the transmission making terrible noise.11/27/00 transmission locked up at 75mph on i40 in nc.all american ford replaced transmission and was supposed to be like new.12/26/00transmission slipping out of third gear nearly resulting in accident and continues to happen.01/09/01 wade ford supposedly fixed the problem.problem still exists and i am scared to drive the vehicle.i have nearly been involved in several accidents because of this unresolved situation and i am conviced that i will die in this vehicle due to the explained situation.

The vehicle goes into reverse but will not go backwards.*et

My car was broadsided by another vehicle on the passenger side doors.my 13 yr. Old son was in the front passenger side, with his seat belt on.when we hit the car spun, his door swung open ejecting him.he landed about 6 ft. From the car on the ground.there were marks left on his neck from the seat belt.fortunately his injuries were not servere.he had a huge lump on the left side of his head from when he hit the ground.i have contacted the dealer where i purcased the car, and have heard from a lady in chicago.my main concern right now is that they investigatefor malfunction/defects on the seat belt.i was asked what his injuries were (the dealer ship never asked, just told me that if the seat belt was defective they woule replace it)what type of compensation i was looking for and i told her "none, at this time because i don't know if my son will have something come up 6 months from now.she stated that i will receive information in the mail, requesting a copy of the accident report, medical records and picture of my sons neck showing the seat belt marks. I want to make sure that this is investigated, documented and told of the results.the car is now in lufkin tx. Sent by my insurance company.

Vehicle was rear ended, and none of the vehicles seat belts, front or rear, held the passengers. All 3 passengers were thrown forward.dealer said the owner was at fault for seatbelts not working.

I own 2 ford escorts a 1999 escort se, and a 2002 escort se, i've noticed on both vehicles, when i've had to do an emergency stop (slamming the brakes) both vehicles take fairly long to respond, increasing the braking distance. I have 2 other friends who own similar escorts, and notice the same problem, i feel that this concern needs to be investigated for a potential defect in the braking system.

Automobile has been taken to the dealer on four different occasions.dealer has not been able to find a remedy to the problem.this is causing consumer fear of driving, and could result in a serious accident.

Rear brakes are not adjusting themselves.*et

Loud squealing sound made whenever brakes were applied, and a clickingwould commence from the brake pedal. Vehicle beento three different dealers, and problemstill goes unresolved.

While traveling approximately 35mph brake calipers would start to rub against the brake pads, causing the brake pads to wear out excessively. It would sound like metal to metal grinding noise. Will be taking vehicle to dealership to have it checked out.

1) headlamps:originally thought there was a loose wire because right light would work periodically.upon further inspection, my mechanic found the connection to which the "bulb" was plugged had melted some what.he suggested that i return to the dealer to ask if there were any recalls on this particular problem, which i intend to do tomorrow.2) brake pedal:recently i found it necessary to have new brake pads installed.part of the problem (for me) was the brake pedal was too soft and too low (the brakes were bad also).the repairs were made by an extremely reputable mechanic.unfortunately, the brake pedal is still too soft and too low.

While approaching a red light brake pedal was applied, and it went straight to the floor, consumer had it checked out, and found that the brakes lines had exploded, and all the fluid was lost. Dealer has been contacted.

The contact owns a 1999 ford escort.while driving 60 mph, the brake pedal extended to the floorboard when it was depressed.the contact applied the parking brake to stop the vehicle.as a result, he crashed into the front of another vehicle.the contact was able to drive the vehicle to a mechanic and he stated that the master cylinder failed.the master cylinder was replaced and there had been no further occurrences. A police report was filed.the current and failure mileages were 100,000. Updated 01-10-08. Updated 12/31/07

The master cylinder was replaced 4 times.

Brakes failure at intersection. Pedal went to floor with no resistance, and crash occurred.

6-7 times brakepedal got stuck. It happened only onhighway andbeltway at 55 mph or higher. When pressing down onbrake pedal it get stuck, and continuing to press down it became unstuck.dealer has been able to duplicate problem, but they could doanything wrong.2 mechanics has test drivenvehicle, and another mechanic from dealershipwill be test drive it again.when the consumer applied brake at 55 mph, the brakes became hard and the steering wheel shimmyed followed by brake going to floor.

While in milwaukee preparing to go home made a stop at the stop sign then made a turn, traveling about 12-15 ft and steering broke, sending the automobile out of control and hit a tree. No injuries.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 20mph, the steering wheel locked, the vehicle crashed and the air bags deployed but did not inflate.the vehicle proceeded to crash into 2 parked cars.injuries were sustained to the driver and passenger's hands, back and feet.both occupants were wearing seat belts.the police responded and provided a written report.the insurance company inspected and deemed the vehicle totaled.there was additional property damage to the parked vehicles.

While driving and getting close to a light vehicle will stall, andsteering wheel will lock up.. Same problem had happen more then ten times.

While traveling at 50 mph engine check light came on. Engine stalled, and steering locked up. Consumer felt that this was very unsafe because driver was unableto steer properly.

The steering column shakes very bad while driving and while at a stop sign or stop light, possible steering column or suspension problem. *et

Steering wheel lock up while driving.

A grinding noise was coming from the engine area of the vehicle, then while traveling approximately 20 to 25 mph, grinding noise occurred again, and driver lost all steering control of vehicle, resulting in a crash with another vehicle, insurance company deemed vehicle as a total loss.

Whenever it rains and i drive in a puddle of water my serpentine belt comes off, causing my car to have no power steering and my battery light comes on.everytime this happens i go to my mechanic and he has to manually put the belt back on.the mechanic tells me he doesn't know why this keeps happening and doesn't know how to fix it because he's inspected my vehicle and can't find anything wrong.

While driving at 45 mph downshifted to second gear and was making a right, lost control of vehicle. Consumer had no brakes/no powersteering, andvehicle went across on the other side of the road about 137 feet andend up on the passenger's side.

While turning left out of a parking lot the car pulled hard to the right and ending up going over the concrete medium.i could not control the vehicle as if the steering locked up.

I bought this 1999 escort from a dealer.it was used with around 20k miles on it.i made the dealer change out the tie rod ends before i took it because i noticed they were bad.the car now has 54k miles on it and the passenger side tie rod end failed causing the car to skid and turn into oncoming traffic.due to a quick-reacting oncoming driver, no accident happened.however, this could have led to a serious accident and possibly deaths.the tow truck driver said that whenever he gets a call for a failed tie-rod, its an escort.this was definitely changed too.i checked it myself after the dealer did them.therefore the tie rod ends only lasted for around 35k miles before extreme failure occurred.something has to be wrong with the steering/suspension design in this model car.every other car i have owned i've driven into the 100k mile range and still no problems with the tie rod ends.what is the deal here?

Front outer tie rod attached towheel assembly failed twice. First time failure was found during maintenance, next time failed while going around ram, interrupting steering.please describe details.

I took my 99 ford escort to a auto repair shop to fix one front tie rod (another frequent problem on escort) and the mechanic told me that one of the spings in the rear suspension was broken. I did not notice anything different when driving and i don't know for how long it has been broken. The mechanic also said that this is a frequent problem with escort, and advised me to check the existance of a recallwith a ford dealer. To this date (jan 2006) there is no recall. He also advised me to keep the receipt of the repair ($ 750 to replace the springs and struts on both sides) in case a recall will be made in the future.

During a state inspection, the consumer was informed by the state officer that the front end driver/passenger side tie rods were defective and needed to be replaced.the upper left front tie rods were defective in 2002 and 2003.the consumers concern is that the lower right and left tie rod may go soon. *scc

Failurre of all four motor mounts in my 1999 ford escort.

The structural integrity of the entire vehicle is unsound.there are broken welds, distorted sheet metal subframe componants, and shifting or flexing of the body throughout the entire vehicle.it has severe oversteer at speed when cornering over roads with varying surfaces.the undercarraige will twist allowing the gas tank to strain and loosen at its retaining straps and the brackets they attach to are pulling loose at their welds.the windshied angle changes, the roof bulges and buckles, the rear doors drop and lift as well as the rear hatch area as the car is accellerated or the brakes are applied.when the steering wheel is turned left or right the body twists.there is a noticable pull under accelleration.also the interior seats shift and sway seperate from the exterior.

Car was not sealed before it was painted,so the paint is chipping away, and rust is beginning to show,on the hood, top, and trunk of car.

Under carriage is separating.spot welds are breaking.fuel tank straps are not secured for tank, which causes it to move around.structural integrity of vehicle is compromised because of spot welds.windshield tilts towards driver.passenger's door inrear of the station wagon would pivot and was getting worse.

I have a manufacturing defect in my 1999 ford escort, which i am second owner of. I contacted local dealer from where purchased as used car, york motors, whom told me to contact local ford dealer, galpin ford. Tony pacini, at galpin, contacted scottsdale ford engineer, with pics i provided of defect. After a few weeks engineer was able to come to my place of employment and see it up close. Engineer confirmed that the rear quarter panel for the car had been "pressed to thin" in the manufacturing phase. I got the estimate for repair, as they requested, for approx. $1500.00. Now they are telling me that this fits under their "good will" policy and i would be lucky if ford will pay for 50% of the repairs. The damage is an open gash of 17" in the rear door casing. I have small children, whom ride in the back and can cut themselves severly with this fault. According to the body shop, where i got estimate and whom told me to do this complaint, the repair procedure that ford initially requested would hinder the proper crash compression of the car and therefore increase danger in an accident. Needless to say, i had originally asked the ford engineer and mr. Pacini that if ford was not willing to consume the cost of repairs, that i would be willing to give them the car and take my choice off their used car lot, with no difference in my car payments or cost. Just a flat out trade. If you need the correspondences i have encurred with ford i would be glad to forward them to you with pictures of the fault.

Took car in to have the muffler fix and they said the frame was busted and coming up through the floor boards separating from the car. Also the frame under doors are eroding. They said it is unsafe to drive and if i hit one big pothole i would be in big trouble.

While vehicle is being driven an extremely loud noise can be heard within the engine compartment. Asbeing driven the more prononced the noise becomes. After a diagnostic test was completedit was concluded thatbearings were bad.please give any further details.

When vehicle accelerates itpulls to the right, also whiledriving over 45 mph vehicle pulls to right which may cause a crash.dealer refuses to acknowledge a problem with steering.

Took car in for oil change. Tech discovered both rear springs are broken. Was quoted $1200 to replace, including struts (still good). I am in minnesota and this car has no traction in the snow. I can drive at 10 mph and the back still breaks traction. I have spun out more driving this car than i have with any other vehicle. I do think ford designed and sold an unsafe vehicle.

When pulling off there is a knockingandrattling noise coming from the vehicle, and the dealer can't determine the cause.

The contact owns a 1999 ford escort.while driving 45 mph, the contact heard a noise and felt a vibration coming from the vehicle's front drivers side.there were no warning indicators.a mechanic stated that the axle was the cause of failure.the engine size was unknown.the current mileage is 65,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

When driving down road, approaching a stop sign and making a stop, vehicle vibrates real badly. It feels like the vehicle is about to stall out.contacted.vehicle has been in the shop for the third time.they said this is a normal characteristic of the vehicle.

Problem is intermittent;when driving at any speed and without prior warning vehicle will cut off.also, noticed shimmying coming fromfront end.consumer has contacteddealer, dealer unable to determine the cause. Please provide any further details.

Vehicle experiencing alignment problems due to suspension failure, which could have cause consumer to have an accident. However, the airbag was loose at the rear part of the steering wheel, which could have caused airbag to experience no deployment during the accident, resulting in multiple injuries.

The vehicle stalls and vibrates from the front end.dealer said problem is common.

After proceeding from a stop signvehicle severely pulls to the right, cause unknown.please give any further details.

There is a knocking in engine, when car is driven, louder the knocking gets. Consumer has contacted an outside mechanic and was informed that source of the problemwas underneath hood where the bearings were. Also, deal hasbeen contacted for a replacement of engine block/ head and cyclinder, but that still has not remedied the problem. Please provide further details.

I bought a used 1999 ford escort stations wagon with only 16k miles on it. At30k miles i took it to a local ford dealer for an oil change and they gave me an estimate for $585 to replace the rear coil springs that are broken, saying it was a safety hazard. Note i never asked for more than a simple oil change. In reading all the complaints here for broken springs i believe ford has gotten awaywith a major safety defect that even its dealers are well aware of.

During replacement of tires and alignment, service personnel advised that the rear coils springs were broken. Was advised that several complaints had been filed with both nhtsa and manufacturer but no recalls had been issued. This is clearly a manufacturing defect which can result in additional vehicle damage, injuries or death. A mandatory recall needs to be required and enforced.

I own a 1999 ford escort s . The mileage is 48,700 miles.i took it in yesterday for a state inspection.i was informed thatnotonly one but both rear coil springs were broken.from my research on the internet i have read that this had been a problemfor several years.but yet no recallhas been issued.

The rear springs were replaced.

Both rear coil springs broke at same time. Car had only 37,000 miles and was4 years old. Independent technicianfixedat least 8 other ford escorts with the same problem.

During safety inspection discovered that the rear springs of 1999 ford escort se had broken.this is the second ford escort i have owned that this has been a problem. First vehicle was a 1997 ford escort lx that i purchased from a dealer in ft. Collins, co.i have owned that the rear springs failed and had to be replaced.

I drive carefully and i maintain my car well.my ford escort wagon is a 1999 model.as such, i still consider it quite new.with only 44,000 miles on it, i considered it to have low mileage.last week my car failed its annual auto inspection.the mechanic (hamilton's garage of portland, me) told me that both rear coil spring assemblies on my car were broken.he said that this has become a potentially dangerous common problem on late model ford escorts.he said that this problem is very rare on other cars.he told me to go to the local ford dealership to see if ford has initiated a recall of the escort's defective rear coil spring assemblies.the ford dealer (rowe ford of westbrook, me) informed me that they were unaware of a recall for that specific part.the ford dealer told me that i would have to pay to replace the defective broken rear coil springs myself as the original warranty on my vehicle had expired.the repair job on my car at the ford dealership cost me $400. My wife contacted the ford motor company headquarters and reported the defect problem with both broken rear coil spring assemblies on our car.the ford headquarters also stated that there was no recall of late model ford escort defective rear coil spring assemblies.they "claimed" to be unaware of such a defect problem with the late model ford escorts. I do not believe ford.i remember ford's lies concerning the scandal with theford pinto's explosive gas tank. This defect problem with the ford escort's rear coil spring assemblies can potentially be very dangerous.i wonder how many people will have to get killed due to this dangerous defect before ford will admit that a problem exists. I strongly believe that ford should have paid the $400 repair bill required to replace their defective broken rear coil springs on my car.the fact that they refused illustrates the poor moral character of the ford motor company.

Our 1999 ford escort with only 11,904 miles on the odometer (we drive a subaru forester mostly), received its annual inspection (nys law) on august 11, 2005. The inspection revealed that both rear coil springs were broken. I asked the technician how that could happen with such low mileage and so little use and both he and the service manager (they are a highly regarded, after-market, auto repair business, servicing all makes of vehicles, and have no cause for bias) said that in their experience ford escorts are notorious for having weak and defective rear coil springs and that they had replaced many over the past few years (more than any other make or model). To a lesser degree they also noted that the taurus had the same problem. Before having the work done i had called the dealer (sam dell ford of liverpool, ny) and the ford consumer complaint office. Neither were at all helpful, denying all knowledge of a defect with the rear coil springs. I am attaching a memo from the independent repair shop, documenting their experience with the escort.

Took vehicle in for service, and technician found that both rear springs were broken. I was unaware of this damage, though i had noticed some suspension noise when turning. Also, thehandling of the vehicle was much "looser" in the rear. Technician informed me that the springs could further deteriote and the body of the vechicle could collapse onto the chassis. The estimate for repairs was $750.00, though no repairs have been made to date.

Car meticulously maintained yet both rear springs had to be replaced at 60,000 miles (close to $300 repair) due to their both being fractured on the bottom-most loop.*la

Both rear springs broke on a 1999 ford escort wagon with 102000 miles providing very dangerous handling situation. This is a very well known problem with this car and is due to poor design.

Rear coil spring broke, the dealer stated that the springs were defective.nlm

Consumer stated that while driving and while driving and with out warning the rear spring snap causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealer notified ts

Rear coil spring failure. 2 separate rear coil spring failures within 2 months. 1 of which punctured the tire at highway speeds. The car lost control and went into the median. Luckily nobody was injured and there were no other vehicles involved.repair shop noted this is a common problem with escorts.

Both rear coil springs broke at same time, and car has only 43,000 miles and is only 4 years old.no excessive weight ever used in this car. Mechanic said he has fixed at least a dozen other ford escorts with the same problem.

Vehicle was taken to the dealer due to driver hearing a noise coming fromrear ofvehicle. Dealer found that rear coil springs broke.

I took my 99 ford escort to a auto repair shop to fix one front tie rod (another frequent problem on escort) and the mechanic told me that one of the spings in the rear suspension was broken. I did not notice anything different when driving and i don't know for how long it has been broken. Rear coil springs are broke.

When i took my car (1999 ford escort stationwagon vin.#[xxx]) in for its oil change & inspection. It failed inspection because a rear coil spring was completely cracked in half. The car is 5 years old, but only had 8,953 miles on it. I am a senior citizen and only drive the car on a limited basis, usually for shopping or to a doctor's office. I was told the the spring was not covered under any warranty and was charged a total of $412.99 (plus tax) for this repair. I was told to contact ford directly to see if anything could be done to compensate me. My son called ford's customer relations # and was told to see the service manager at the dealer, who would then submit the claim for me. After 2 seperate visits to the dealer, my son was told: 1) the manager had gone home early that day & that only the manager could deal with the problem.on the next day 2) the manager was in a meeting (friday afternoon @ 4:00 pm) & could not be disturbed. My son returned home & called fords customer relations #. He was told that the dealers service manager had called and said that they would not offer any compenstaion. As for the broken coil spring, my son had told me to request the broken parts and i do have them. When the spring broke, i do not no because the ride of the car was always the same as when i purchased the car new. Now with the new springs, the rear of the car rides higher.updated 07/26/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

1-courtesy check by a local tire & auto service center during a tire rotation.suggest replace rear coil springs.2-we were told one of the rear coil springs is broken, these have to be replaced in pairs.3-this is a design flaw and should not be a regular item that needs to be maintained.we should not have to pay for a pair of coils and a suspension alignment.we are looking for a recall instead of paying money out of our pocket for an item that should not need to be replaced.apparently this is true because of other complaints for the same reason for years of 1997-2001 for ford escorts/sedans and mercury tracer/sedans.

The clearcoat on the black paint of my 1999 ford escort zx2 has cracked.there are fine white cracks covering the car body but mainly on the hood.i took the car to the dealers auto body shop and was informed that it was a factory defect and that they had seen this problem on other black cars.so far both the dealer, gus johnson ford, and ford customer service have refused to stand behind their product.this vehicle is covered under the extended warranty.

While traveling at 50 mph engine check light came on. Engine stalled, and steering locked up. Consumer felt that this was very unsafe because driver was unableto steer properly.

Accelerator causes car to surge forward or backward at a high rate of speed, depending on gear. Happens 9 times out of 10. Have lost control of vehicle three times on ice this winter, and had repeated close cals, especially when reversing. Took car to ford dealer where bought, and told it is model defect and not fixable. Note one similar in your records, see: odi id:854752.

When defrosting my windshield, the section directly in front of me never fully defrosts.when the sun hits it it glares so much that i cannot see anything.dealership found nothing wrong.it only defrosts from the inside if i wipe it off, but otherwise it stays fogged up.

I was driving with my heater fan running and began to get a burning smell. The fan then quit running. When i investigated to find out why the fan no longer would work, i found the electrical connection for the fan motor had melted and looked burnt as though it may have smoldered. I have that piece available for inspection if needed.

The contact owns a 1999 ford escort. The contact stated that the rear heater blower failed and sparks were shooting from the wiring harness. The contact was able to disconnect the harness before a fire ignited. The contact located a manufacturers recall for defective wiring of the defroster system, in which he believed to be the cause of the failure, but did not confirm if there were any recalls on his particular vehicle. The vehicle was neither inspected nor repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 105,000.
