On december, 17th, in the evening, my husband was on route 20, in marlborough, ma.he had made a wrong turn and was going 2 mph, doing a k-turn, when both the airbags in his 1998 ford escort inflated.he has a standard shift car.at the time of the faulty inflation, as he was struck by the airbag in the head, his feet came off the pedals and the car stalled, rolling to the side of the road and hitting a curb.we are very lucky that he was not on the highway when these airbags deployed.had he notmade the wrong turn, he would have been on the highway.at a speed of 65 mph on route 495, i don't believe his outcome would have been so good, after the airbag deployment. He suffers still from neck and back pain from theincident.the important point to note here is that he did not hit anything.the airbags just deployed on their own, while he was driving.we called ford the next day to report this.they said that someone would contact us within 7-10 days.two and a half weeks went by, and no one called.my husband called ford again.they said there was nothing they could do.my husband then called our local ford dealer.a regional rep. Was going to be at that location the following day.he called us, stating that within a few days ford would be in contact with us.a few days went by, and he told us that there was nothing he could do, we had to file certain paperwork first before ford would talk to us.the paperwork arrived the next day.it requests such things as "complete history of oil changes and any work performed on the car".it is a generic form, not applicable to faulty airbag deployment. I am writing to you because i have a problem with their lack of caring about consumer protection.what ford should have done, wasto immediately take possession of the car for as long as they needed to find out why the airbags deployed.ford apparently has no interest in assessing the reason for the faulty airbag deployment.

Brief summary of defective safety gear:09/26/98 this vehicle was traveling 35-40mph and rear-ended a truck, neither air-bag deployed.now, 9/17/99, atruck traveling 35-40mph rear-ended this vehicle causing about a 20mph smash to the vehicle in front and again, no air bag deployment and the fuel pump cut-off switch failed to function.this time however, the driver of this vehicle received double the whip-lash effect that could have been kept to the single inflictrd in a rear-end collision involving only two vehicles.a needless neck injury has been suffered this time and i feel that if the air-bags were deployed, the elimination of the forward whip would not have been a factor of the neck injury.

Choosing child safety seat on the menu brought me to this form...anyway, child safety seats that do not have a means to adjust the straps without removing the safety seat from the vehicle are unsafe.many parents will just put their child in thinking the seat is safely installed and they don't realize that proper strap adjustment is a major part of the child's safety.i recommend a recall on all seats that don't have an adjustment lever at the front of the seat.this time of year is especially dangerous, when the weather one day will require a winter coat and the weather the next is summer like.an example of an unsafe seat is the cosco ventura. An example of a safe seat is the century brevvera.

The battery failed without any warning on the dash. The car was jump started and ran for another 40minutes before the car died again in traffic. I was able to push the car offthe three lane highway onto to the shoulder. I received another jump start to the battery with a battery pack connected to the car battery terminals which enabled me to exit the highway. Immediately upon removal of the battery pack ,the car died again. I was towed to a safe location. The following day i installed a new battery and the car started immediately and continued to run after removing the postive cable connedted to the car's battery. A co-worker informed me today he regularly had to replace the battery on his escort about every two years. He also had no prior warning of imminent battery failure. This is a dangerous condition.

At 123,00mi i noticed water leaking form behind water pump took it to ford dealer and they had to replace the water pump housing part #f8rz-8501-en it had eroded from the inside out resulting in a pinhole leak i also had the water pump, timing belt replased just in caseat a cost of 625 dollars. 13 months and 33,000mi later same problem with water pump housing eroding for inside out of corse it was out of warranty and the timing belt was failing do to a seized idler cost to repair 700 dollars. The idler you can chalk up to bad luck the housing on the other hand is ridiculous it has no moving parts other than antifreeze running through it and the mechanics have no idea what is causing this. Harmonic balancer for the king pin broke.consumer states while exiting parkway, there was a loud vibration coming from the front end, the harmonic balancer was hitting into the wall of the vehicle, consumers husband checked under the vehicle to see what the problem was, his hand slipped and got caught between the belt and the balancer, resulting in his finger having to be amputated.

Pulley had frozen and serpentine belt had came off. It was frayed. It then shot up into the timing belt. This caused the timing belt to jump & causedvehicle to stop. While driving home from work a grinding ticking noise was heard from the engine compartment.the noise became louder and more constant the closer i got to home.when i got home i opened the hood to investigate and discovered that the outside portion of the crankshaft vibration dampner pulley had slid out and was rubbing on the inner fender well.the serpentine belt was destroyed from not being centered on the tensioner pulley and rubbing on the fender well.i am going to call the dealer tomorrow to report this and see if they will fix it.i just thought you might want to know about this.thank you.

While driving, the vehicle stalled.the consumer tried to restart, the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.the consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed replacement.please fill in additional information.

Harmonic balancer separated/broke causing serpentine and timing belts to malfunction.no previous problems with vehicle and luckily it occurred while vehicle parked with engine running.original warranty "expired" less than 2 months prior.understand now that this is a common problem from mechanics and the nhtsa website.

The engine mounts were apparently weakened and allowed the engine to vibrate excessively, beginning at the time of vehicle purchase and continuing, growing worse, through april 2000, when i had the parts replaced under warranty;i was told that there is a tsb involving them but no recall and no public notice...this could potentially be dangerous if the weakened mounts break!my problem has been solved but i would like to have had some warning from ford or nhtsa that this might occur.

When you try to use the washer fluid it leaks on the hood of the car causing the hood to become discolored from the windsheild washer fluid. Also whenever you are at a stop the car starts to shake, they ford say that it is from the engine mounts and that it is not hazardous so they will not do anything about. Last their is problems with the transmision, whenever you are moving slow or in a stop position and start to move the car jerks really bad. It makes you feel like someone ran into you or that you ran something over. I have reported this to the company, but they can't do nothing about. Crankshaft/ pulley came loose frommounting and shifting over, causing vehicle to lose all power.piece that broke off jammedgear, andtiming belt was changed and reset. Manufacturerand dealer did not know of a problem ,and didn't offer to do anything. Warranty was expired. Part number and name is damper part# f7cz-6316-ba. The pulley was loose and shifted half inch causing the belt to shred.

Dampner pulley came apart from crankshaft. Inside wall of vehicle was the only thing keeping it from falling out onto the ground. I notified ford company that a 3 year old vehicle should not have parts falling off. They informed me that there was nothing they could do since the warranty had ran out. I am very unhappy with the attitude they have towards their customers.

Service engine soon light appeared on dash. The consumer stated the trouble dated back to the recall, prior to the recall there were no problems. The dealer stated the problem was due to an over sensitive sensor or air being in the gas tank.the problem was determined to be a bogus code. Nar 1/21/2003

There have been many problems with my 1998 ford escort since i purchased it new in august, 1998.the most severe and recent problem was repaired in december, 2002.the head gasket blew, causing major overheating problems in my vehicle.the vehicle had less than 40,000 miles.i am not certain if the head gasket became faulty while vehicle was being built, or if fullerton ford damaged the gasket while doing work on my vehicle, and then attempted to sodder the part together.according to corbo's auto service in somerville, the gasket had a "soddered" hole in it which caused the gasket to blow. Fullerton form was the only repair facility i had taken my vehicle to be repaired before it was taken to corbo's.i have called ford on several occasions to complain about the service work at fullerton.i have expressed to them that i believe fullerton ford was hurting my vehicle more than it was helping it.the ford company has not been very supportive in my efforts to investigate fullerton fords service practices.

Consumer hears a loud noise everytime she starts the vehicle. Dealer cannot find the cause.

Dealer was unable to diagnose vehicle problem of high pitch whining sound that developed after the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature. In my observations i noted that the engine was not circulating the engine oil properly. When pulling out the oil dipstick it was apparent that a vacuum problem existed in the engine. Also when taking off the oil filler cap a vacuum sound was detected. Finally i removed the part at the top rear of the engine which is connected with hoses to the air filter housing. I immediately noted that the engine started to run smoother and after driving the vehicle for 2 hrs no noise was detected from the engine. It is obvious that the vacuum caused by the defective filter did not allow the engine to be properly circulated in the engine. The vehicle ran hot and the coolant had to be topped off.i feel the defective filter has caused engine damage. I took the part #f8cz-6a768-ab to the local ford dealership parts dept and have ordered a replacement. My complaint is that ford and their dealerships could not diagnose a problem that could lead to complete engine failure due to overheating.

I was lucky that i was on a lonely road at 3:00 am with my teen daughter when they went out for the 1st time. As i have 4 children and 2 parents to care for with a full time job and was away from home at the time to help my daughter. I was unable to get this taken care of until oct, 2001. I called in september and was unable to reach anyone until 10-3-2001. I feel that this is a defective thing as i have talked to other people that have had problems in the office with the ford electrical. 1998 escort not getting enough gas into the engine. Changed fuel filter, had fuel injectors looked at, got premium gas, no luck. The car idles extremely roughly and shakes uncontrollably. It feels like it wants to stall and bucks when idling and even while driving. The idle is becoming worse and worse to the point where i feel uncomfortable driving the vehicle. This used to happen periodically, now shakes and bucks everytime i drive the car. I am a poor college student and can not afford to continue taking it to a mechanic.

The fuel pump initially failed within 30 days of the expiration of the warranty on the car.the fuel pump was replaced by kip killmon's tysons ford in tysons corner, va in july 2001.in january 2002 the fuel pump again failed, and the same dealership replaced the fuel pump for a second time.fortunately, the failure did not occur while i was driving the car, but resulted in the car failing to start.had the pump failed while the vehicle was in operation, i might not have been so lucky.the fact that the same problem occurred within 6 months on the same well-maintained car with low mileage, indicates to me that this may be a manufacturing problem with the part and/or the car.ford had no interest in addressing my concerns when this problem was brought to their attention.

While driving, vehicle stopped running, consumer had a mechanic look at vehicle who found that the engine was not getting fuel, the problem was the fuel pump, also 2 wires, a positive and negative, had soldered together and had bare spots that were touching, consumer's vehicle could have blown up, ford will not assist consumer at all in this matter. *scl

I was driving the car on july 15thand stopped at the red light before crossing the tracks and when the light turned green i attempted to go forward and the car would not go forward.i flagged the people behind me to back up and i couldn't go backwards.i panicked because it was early morning rush hour and my 5 year old daughter was with me but after a couple of minutes the car slowly went forward.i called service and made the appointment to take the car in on july 22 which was the earliest they could get me in.on the morning i went to take the car in i was driving down the street at 30 miles per hour and the car started to slow down and i looked at the dashboard and realized that the indicator lights were all on.fortunately i was able to pull over and had my fiance' with me.i took the car in and needless to say it took two weeks to get a replacement transmission which they said would be brand new and on the receipt it says reman transmission and that there was also a leak at the emv valve which the

Automatic transmission will not downshift to change gears once it has warmed up a bit. Has taken vehicle to dealer & it was test driven for over a week. Mechanic could not find cause of non downshifting.

Transmission failed causing vehicle to stall.

While traveling on the highway transmission had a loud noise coming from the gear.

Transmission slips in & out of gear whenever vehicle is at a dead stop or when vehicle's ready to take off. Took to dealer twice because of problem, but mechanic was unable to repair it.

Fuel guage fails to register the correct amount of fuel.also, transmission would jump/jerk forward if placed into gear. Whenever the brakes are applied, the transmission would jerk. Rear passenger door cannot be open from the inside. Took to dealer & had transmission replaced. Mechanic indicated nothing was wrong.

The failure involves the interlock that keeps you from shifting out of park without applying the brake.my left rear turn signal bulb had burned out.i stopped the car, put it in park, and set the emergency brake, to get out and check the other turn signals.first i turned on the left side and verified that the left rear bulb wasn't working. Then i asked the passenger in the car to switch on the right signals.she leaned on the shift lever to try to reach the turn signal lever, and when she did, the car went into reverse.it moved back slowly since the emergency brake was on, so i jumped out of the way and got in and stopped it.upon further investigation, i found this:that if the left rear turn signal bulb is bad, the shift interlock is released when you turn on the left turn signal, allowing the shift lever to be moved out of park without stepping on the brake first.when i put in the new bulb, the behavior did not happen anymore.i put the bad bulb back in, and it started doing it again.if i had not set the parking brake, i could have been run over.my concern is that this defect may exist in several model years on this vehicle and possibly other ford vehicles.this problem was on a 1998 ford escort sedan with automatic transmission.

Vehicle had transmission repaired in august of 2001.soon thereafter, it started to have difficulties with shifts.now, the vehicle grinds going into 5th gear / refuse to go into 5th and will actually force itself out of 5th gear while at highway speeds, which is obviously unsafe trying to merge onto / drive on dc highways.took it to a dealer on may 30th, who said they could not recreate the problem.took vehicle to same dealer on july 5th, rode with shop manager who recreated the problem but was told it would be at least 2 weeks for repair.took vehicle to another dealer, who had it all week, repaired some component, but problem resurfaced on trip home from dealership.contacted dealer, who suggested that i could drive a vehicle in this condition on the highway for the next two weeks, then bring it in.i am teaching in another state for the next two weeks, so i am in an urgent need of a functional vehicle.

I live in burlington ontario canada, yet felt that this issue needed to be addressed beyond contacting the ministry of transportation in canada, (of which i am in the process of doing).i belong to a large group of escort zx2 owners who are on the second and even 3rd transmission!this model was first introduced in 1998(the year of my car) and should not have had so many problems with our transmissions.it is extremely weak and has frequent mis-syncing shifts.i feel this is not only a safety issue, yet one that deserves immediate attention.please have ford do a study on this transmission and come up with some sort of "fix" as the present is unacceptable.i have gone through every other channel of which i could in canada and am now coming to you.please help.

My son was driving my 1998 ford escort lx on a 35 mph road when the driver in front of him slammed on his brakes.my son immediately tried to stop the car, but he rear-ended the other car before he could come to a complete stop.during the impact, the driver's seat belt did not lock in place and the dual airbags did not deploy - allowing my son's upper body to continue forward until his face hit the steering wheel. The lap belt functioned properly, holding my son's lower body in place.

While driving 30 mph vehicle hit pole, driver's and passenger's seatbelts did not work, driver and passenger hit their heads on windshield.

I have had this problem since i purchased the vehicle, as you are driving the back of the seat will drop down.i had taken it in to the service center and made comment of this to which i was told i have never heard anything like it before.what i have found out over the years and miles, is that the seatbelt strap at the lap can catch on the release lever of the seat and any shifting in position will pull on the lever and release the seat back.this is just a warning to others as it can cause a fatal accident as it catches the unsuspecting driver off guard when the back of your seat falls.i have had this happen over a dozen times since owning the vehicle.

I am concerned regarding rear bumper cover. This very important paft on tbis vehicle is made totally of fiberglass or a similar product which becomes more cracked with time and the main issue is that it has no hard metal bar for protection in theevent of a rear impact . This bumper which i had removed to rplaced what was left of it has something that appears to be a bar attached or part of it yet it is notany type of metal that would in any way help endure the rear of the vehicle in the event of a rear impact. In fact i am concerned that it can easily seriously cause serious injury to rear passengers if not death because there is no protection with this bumper. Besides this and making it more dangerous , the gas tank is right next to this said bumper andthis makes it much more dangerous . I don't know if there was a recall for this item , i just want to let nhtsa know the safety hazard this is and the danger it poses to the rear passengers and really all people in this vehicle in the event of a rear impact.

Tire t301887-gcw-74m8ms - tire blowout at 65 mph.(dot number: mkmf bewrtiresize: p185/60r15)

Hello,my complaint concerns the rear coil springs of '98 ish escorts. In my case, the first spring failed at about 80,000 kms and the second was confirmed just today while having a tire replaced due to a puncture.three garages have made unsolicited comments concerning the awful coils delivered with the car wondering if they (the rear coils) had failed yet. Initially i was skeptical of the mechanics motives; now i just fume when i hear these comments. If this is such a problem, why isn't ford making arrangements to redress this problem?now i'm wondering whether that busted coil was responsible for yesterday's punctured tire - the garage thought this was certainly not out of the question.

Tires (no make or size) will not hold air adequately, consumer adds air about once a week, tire pressure is as low as 20.

Pe00 048; consumer was traveling about 65mph onhighway andheard a loud banging noise.she saw smoke from rearview mirrior.she was able to pull over, andnoticed thatfront right passenger tire tread separated fromvehicle. Goodyear tire. Goodyear was notified.

While traveling on a straight portion of highway, driver heard a click sound from under the vehicle.vehicle swerved to right, driver lost control and crashed.

Sensor light comes on and off intermittently. Consumer tookvehicle to dealership, andmechanic fixedvehicle. Dealership mechanic replaced wiring in front ofvehicle, andproblem came back three months ago.dealertold her to ride with sensor light on.service engine soon light on steady due to powertrain control module (pcm) failure.

Dt:the contact states the vehicle has a loud roar when idling.the vehicle also accelerates rapidly on its own.he took the vehicle to an independent garage.the technician suggested a new speed control and an idle control module.this was replaced twice but did not correct the problem.a diagnostic check did not detect any codes.the dealer was unable to determine the cause of this problem.there have been no further repairs at this time.updated 12/27/2005 - this problem seemed worse in cold weather.in order for the vehicle to idle down the consumer had to turn the vehicle off then turn it back on.the problem would sometimes resurface a few minutes later, a few weeks later or a few months later.

Entered expressway and throttle linkage stuck open. Got vehicle slowed from upwards to 75 mph by smashing brakes and slowed enough to exit. Was not able to slow down to a stop so turned right on exited streetand once straightened out, while still moving at approx. 30mph,shifted in neutral, letting the motor race uncontrollably while vehicle was brought to a stop. At that time lever was put into park and motor turned off. Driver shaken up and vehicle motor may be compromised due to stuck accelerator over-revving. Looked for a recall for model type for stuck throttle linkage-none for escort but there is one for ford like model, the contour, recall # 99v194000. Escort was built in 3/1998 which falls under time of recall for other ford product.

Vehicle would accelerate. Would start revving at stop light/sign. Manua clutch makes noise. Speed not a factor. The brakes would jerk & jiggle when applied. Had rattle in right front after repairs. Was informed that was normal.

The contact owns a 1998 ford escort. The contact stated whilesitting idle at a traffic stop with the brakes depressed, the vehicle abnormally accelerated to 80 mph. The contact was able to avoid a crash by weaving in and out of traffic and attempted to shift into park but to no avail. The contact then engaged the emergency brake with the assistance of the passenger. The contact stated that there was very little brake fluid in the vehicle but enough that the brakes should have stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected at a local repair facility where the contact was informed that the throttle body and exhaust/ gas recirculation flaw were defective and possibly the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the manufacturer nor the dealer was contacted to report the failure. The contact stated she did not feel safe driving the vehicle. The failure and current mileage was 150,000. Updated 10/15/10 the consumer stated the problem has been fixed. Updated 10/21/10

While drivingthrottle remained open and was stuck. Ended up hitting another vehicle. Also hit a tree & a pole. Tried to shift into neutral & vehicle failed to slow down or stop. Finally shut vehicle off. Sometime later, restarted vehicle & it was still running at full throttle. Have not taken to dealership.

While driving vehicle hesitated/revved, and finally accelerated, almost causing arear end collision.dealer could determine problem. Please provide further information.

The car is constantly shaking, once you put the gearshift in drive. Car was checked and reviewed by mechanic through the computer.the tps was replaced. The motor support rubbers are ok. Went to ford dealer and they do not find how to fix the problem.this continuous shaking movement is really annoying.

Poor pickup, poor interstate onramp speed, rough idle.

Vehicle vibrates terribly at stops signs, consumer was advised by mechanic that ford is aware that this is a known problem, which is called "poor idle quality"and that a recall would probably go out soon to remedy the problem, consumer still has not received any recall notification and the vibation is intolerable and very loud.

Engine idle remains at high rpm's while changine gears. Mjs

Ongoing p[roblem with exhaust smell coming into vehicle when heater/defogger are turned on. Dealer / manufaxcturer notified.

Smell comes from a/c-heater vents when either one is turned on. Makes passenger nauseous. .was told by my 2 yr. Old to turn off, making him feel sick. Reported to dealer. Twice.no problem found. 97/98 cougar same problems as reported by friend.

The sealing lines on the lower outside of the windshield on the vehicle is being pulled apart by the humidity and heat.*scc

I have heard other people with the ecaxt same car have the exact same problems

Wiper blades do not work, causing poor visibility in rainy weather.

On highway under snowy and icy conditions consumer tried to turn on the windshield wipers, and they would not turn on. Consumer felt this was very unsafe.
