The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving at a low speed and attempting to park with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle accelerated independently. As a result, the contact crashed into the front of another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.

My steering wheel is very very hard to steer on my 2009 ford escape 2 wd.i need this fixed by the dealer & want to know if this is part of the recall#14s05 my vin is:[xxx] .i hope this is part of the recall so my local dealer can fix it free for me.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Car not starting because of a poorly designed ignition housing.the car sometinms doesn't start because it doesn't turn the ignition switch like it should.i got the replacement part from dealer and they said it is a common problem.so why is thre not a recall for the issue?

A recurring issue with the electrical/brake system of this vehicle was a random-occurring "short" or electrical system glitch that would partially disable the electric power braking system and causing a substantial loss of engine power, which caused the braking capability of the vehicle to be reduced to a barely functioning operational level as well as the loss of power steering.this occurred at least 20-times during our first 22-months of ownership.this sudden and severe lack of braking required the vehicle to have the transmission downshifted to a lower forward gear and a hard mechanical effort applied to the brake pedal and steering wheel to bring the vehicle to a stop.with the vehicle stopped, the ignition could be turned-off and the key removed.when the key was re-inserted and turned to "start", the vehicle would always start as if the entire electrical system had "reset".this required a total of five (5) different multiple-day repairs at the local ford dealer in attention to the normal maintenance intervals service. Each of the 5-"power problem" repairs were found to be from different causes, including but not limited to: faulty starting-battery location and wiring harness damage, faulty wiring assembly (different location), abs brake sensor module.the ford dealer we purchased the vehicle from, and ford corporate ultimately did not stand behind our purchased "ford premium service plan" or our purchased "ford extended service mileage contract" costing us over $2,000 of out-of-pocket and "non-covered" plan expenses.because of the random and severely unsafe power and braking conditions of this vehicle, in addition to the excessive repairs and finally the non-resolution attitude and non-performance of the ford motor company, we sold this vehicle as a dealer trade-in for the purchase of a new suv from a different manufacturer and dealer.

To whom it may concern:in late may 2009 i purchased a 2009 ford escape hybrid, from stoneham ford in stoneham, massachusetts and within a period of a month placed the vehicle into service as a taxi cab. On the night of september 10, 2009 at approximately 11:00pm, after the vehicle had been sitting unattended in our yard for a period of two hours the vehicle caught fire and was destroyed. In a report compiled by the boston fire investigation unit dated september 14, 2009, it was determined that the fire was unintentional and did not result from human factors.the report further stated that the source of ignition was located in an 'electrical wire cable', on the passenger side of the engine wire harness in the area of the abs unit under the hood. After being inspected by ford motor company personnel, ford recently informed us of it's conclusion that the fire did not result from any default in the manufacturing or design of the car.i am trying to ascertain whether any similar under-the-hood fires involving ford escape hybrid and non-hybrid similar vehicles have been reported to you.kindly forward to me all documentation relating to similar under-the-hood fires within the last 3 years involving both ford escape hybrids and non-hybrid escape.in addition, please notify me whether this model has ever been the subject of any recall notifications within the last 3 years.thank you for your cooperation in this matter. I am asking that the investigation into ford recall 14s05 be reopened as the repair options were not sufficient to ensure the vehicle be correctly repaired as well as insure the safety of vehicles operation.vehicle steering wheel jittering, bumping and vibrating while vehicle is stopped and experiencing intermittent loss of power steering.ford recall 14s05 performed on vehicle 12/17/2014.at the time ford chose not to replace electric steering column and elected to complete recall with alternate software update.on 3/17/2017 the same ford dealership that performed recall on vehicle has determined that the electronic steering column must now be replaced due to part failures stated in recall.both the dealership warranty administrator and ford customer service state that recall has been closed on vehicle due to december 2014 maintenance therefore the repair costs of the recalled parts will not be covered.

Sudden brake failure with no warning. Vehicle was initially traveling at 55 mph when a sudden stop was initiated by driver. Vehicle stopped as expected. Vehicle also stopped as expected 3 more times over next couple miles. However, when brake pedal was depressed prior to next turn (now from 45 mph), brake pressure was low, pedal travel was long, and vehicle did not slow. At this time 3 dash indicator lights illuminated: abs, brake pressure/emergency brake, and traction control. No warning chime or driver information message. Vehicle did begin to slow at slow rate once brake pedal was depressed all the way to floor. Issue remained for duration of 1/2 mile drive home. Vehicle was then parked, ignition switched off, then restarted after ~30 seconds. Warning lights went off, and brake pedal pressure was normal after restarting. Brake fluid reservoir level was okay. All systems function normal during 1 mile test drive. Vehicle has no history of brake problems.

My 2009 ford escape hybrid has a problem with starting the ignition. It has been getting worse and worse for many months. I have to push it in and try over and over before the car starts. It also has so many of my warning lights on even tho the problems fixed or replaced.

Our 2009 ford hybrid escape caught fire in our driveway. The fire department came and it took two firemen to put it out. The entire front was destroyed. Even the dash board was melted as a result of the fire. It appeared to be an electrical trigger, but there is no certainiy as to what cause this fire, which had flames nearly 10 feethigh. My son was sitting in the car taliking on the phone. He came running in sayng there was smoke in the car and when i looked out the window it had already started to catch fire.smoke and catch fire. I am thankful he was not injured and that my house -a cedar sided home- did not catch on fire.

On march 9, 2016, our 2009 escape hybrid completely "stopped" in traffic on boulder highway, las vegas, nevada which occurred about 1 mile from a carwash that we have frequently used no less than 15 times annually. Our vehicle had completely stopped in traffic 5 times within a 1 mile distance between the initial stop on boulder highway to our rv park. At the initial stop in traffic my wife and i had to push our vehicle into a gas station because the vehicle would not restart. Each time the vehicle stopped the red master vehicle electrical hazard warning light had come on and the digital panel showed the message "stop safely". The master vehicle electrical hazard warning light "indicates hybrid component fault/failure that will cause the vehicle to shutdown or fail to start". The vehicle did both. The vehicle was towed to ford country in henderson, nevada. A diagnostic test was performed, however, the computer results showed an abs and transmission issue, but no hybrid problem. The abs and transmission error codes eventually cleared themselves. The ford technicians stated that since the undercarriage had been washed, as always, an electrical sensor had probably created the failure. I questioned the idea that car washing could create the problem since the only opening to the hybrid battery is the vent located on the driver's side near the rear of the vehicle. The master vehicle electrical hazard warning light failure resulted in the complete shutdown of our vehicle in traffic and is worrisome since our experience could have resulted in a major accident with possible fatal consequences. If a regular carwash is the diagnosis for the warning of a "hybrid component failure", which completely shuts down the engine in traffic, there may be a vehicle design issue. And, the fact that the escape's computer failed to store the error code is also alarming.

Brake light came on, pedal went to floor, acted as if lost power mode. Turned off car, brake light went off, brakes worked fine. Took it in to dealership and the computer did not show any issues. Problem occured intermittently but i would turn off the car and it would be ok so i figured it was a computer issue. Took it back to the dealership and they said it was a module repair which cost 1800 dollars to repair. Now it is june 19th and the wrench light came on and i could put the gas pedal tothe floor and i couldn't get over 30 mph. Again i turned off the car and it acted normal.just came back from the dealership and they said it sounded like a throttle box issue. I now have to take it back in to repair this issue for 450-750 dollars. I was driving this vehicle approximately 20 miles to work everyday and still am.

2009 ford escape hybrid, 50,000 miles.my throttle body is defective and causes the car to have seriously reduced low speed acceleration.i have been advised by ford service, wayne ford, wayne, nj, that i need i need a new throttle body.unfortunately, the throttle body is on backorder.that in and of itself should indicate that the problem is widespread.my car is dangerous to drive, and the part that is defective should last more than 50,000 miles.ford should issue a recall for this dangerous condition and also refund customers for any repairs done to this defective part.i amalso experiencing a problem where the hybrid battery will no longer engage. When the engine is fully warmwith ac and or defroster off, the engines idles continuously.it is suppose to shut off, and engage the battery.it does not.the car is now no longer "a hybrid" since the battery is never engaged, and it runs poorly due to the throttle body defect.at 50,000 miles, this is unacceptable for a vehicle purchased new.

14s05 recall, code b2278 lost power assist system luckily i was not on the highway. I was driving in a neighborhood at less then 20mph. I have 154,000 miles on my car. This failure made it nearly impossible for me to steer my car. If i had been on a mildly busy street and needed to turn at an intersection i would not have been able to do it. I was moments from getting on the highway and can not imagine how i could have had any control of the vehicle. Ford should be replacing all the failed torque sensor. Should be a class action lawsuit!

Stopped at red light when car begin to run extremely rough, service engine light came on and when light turned green it would only accelerate up to 20 miles per hour. Vehicle was towed to the dealership this morning (08/14/2014) and it is the throttle body issue listed in dp12006 for ford escape vehicles.the reason for this case is ford motor company / randall reed ford wants to exclude a 2009 ford escape hybrid from the customer satisfaction program 13n03 and have me pay for the repair.your help in getting this resolved is greatly appreciated.

Poor acceleration, lost power on highway.would not accelerate with gas pedal pushed.pulled over side and restart.enough power to make it home 10 miles but still poor acceleration.

Driving approximately 35-40 mph for about 15 minutes. Suddenly vehicle lost power and would not accelerate. A "wrench" warning light on the instrument cluster also illuminated, which has never occurred in the past. I have owned the vehicle since new and have never had any engine related problems.maximum speed was now 22-25 mph. Pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor did not increase engine speed or vehicle speed. Engine rpm was around 1500-1800 rpm according to tachometer. Due to faster traffic slowing behind me i had to pull to the side of the road for safety. Engine continued to operate but would not work properly. I turned the vehicle off, waited a minute and restarted the engine. Wrench light came on again and i had a scary drive back at 25 mph with my kids in the car and traffic speeding around me. Woke up early the next morning to bring in for service and the wrench light was now off and the engine worked normally. It has been 4 days since and the problem has not reappeared. Problem is i am now afraid to drive on the highway or for long distances, and my wife will not drive the vehicle at all.

While driving on the highway, my check engine light came on and the car immediately switched from gas to electric. From that point on, the car would not transition back to gas.took the car to ford and had to have the throttle body and motor assembly replaced.

Driving 65mph on interstate, yellow wrench light appeared on dash, vehicle lost power during rush hour. Forced to cross three lanes of 65mph traffic going 5-10mph (limited by vehicle's computer no matter how far i pushed the gas pedal.) after shutting car ignition off and restarting, wrench light still on. Shutoff ignition again, removed key, opened door (into traffic) to completely shutoff electronics, radio, driving lights, etc. Restarted vehicle and wrench light was now off. Proceeded to drive with the vehicle surging faster/slower as i drove.a diagnostic code dtc p2112 was retrieved indicating "throttle actuator control system - stuck closed" which is covered under extended warranty by ford customer satisfaction program 13n03 in response to nhtsa?s office of defects investigation (odi)action number : dp12006. When i contacted ford about this they responded that my particular vin was not covered. The ford customer satisfaction program 13n03 extends the warranty for the throttle body to 10years 150,000 miles. My escape hybrid is 5 years old with 86,xxx miles but they say it is not covered. Why? i have the defective part number throttle body 9le-bc installed in my vehicle since new, which has been superseded by part number ford oem # ds7z-9e926-d and, which ford is installing under this program to replace my defective part. Why am i being denied warranty replacement when i meet all of the criteria they have listed? during a call to ford 1-800-392-3673 on 6_23_2014 i was told that they do not know why my particular vin vehicle is not covered even though i meet the criteria for the replacement, however they can positively confirm that it is not covered. I was further told that i can bring the vehicle to a dealership for diagnosis, but there will be a diagnostic fee i will be required to pay even if i do not authorize any of the repairs that may be needed.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled and the stop safely now warning indicator illuminated. After two minutes, the vehicle restarted normally. The contact also stated that the failure occurred approximately six times in four months. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 26,000.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving at 70 mph, the vehicle lost power. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.

My 2009 escape hybrid had the same throttle body failure as shown in pe13003 and dp12006. I was driving on busy street on way to airport when wrench light and engine light came on and car lost power to accelerate which was scary to say the least! i managed to drive (or rather limp) to side street to prevent being hit and tried turning engine on and off. Wrench light went off but engine light remained on and drove car to ford dealer in limp mode. I was advised by them that my car went into limp mode to prevent any further damage to engine. I let them know i have extended warranty(premium esp) that was good up to 109,913 miles /aug. 2017 and currently had 108,287miles. The throttle is covered under this warranty however i was told the throttle did not need replacing. I was told the throttle was spitting gas as throttle door not opening properly and "the throttle had a cold which needed taking care of" and just needed a throttle/ fuel injection cleaning service. I was charged $346.18 for fuel injection cleaning and flush, hybrid battery filter and labor. I'm concerned this will happen again as throttle was not replaced and my problem was identical to the others investigated in pe13003. I don't understand why throttle wasn't replaced. Are escape hybrids not included in previous investigations? why not??? under my warranty, if throttle was replaced it would have cost me less than cleaning it. Is this just a money making ploy at the expense of safety? please advise if escape hybrids will be investigated for throttle problems. Thank you

My 09 escape hybrid suffered the same throttle body failure investigated in pe13003 and dp12006 where the vehicle goes into 'limp mode' following the tb failure.in essence, my daughter was merging not the highway and suddenly lost power to the vehicle.she was able to exit to the shoulder and the vehicle would drive in slow speed but not normal.i had the vehicle repaired at the dealer and have the receipt.however, ford excluded the hybrid from its consumer satisfaction program 13n03.as my receipt shows, the tb part number is the same as those on the covered vehicles as is the diagnosis and fix (replace the throttle body).i've contacted ford for coverage of the repair iaw the csp 13n03 but their stance has been that my vehicle was not included in the program.i'm contacting you to see if there was a technical/logical reason why the escape hybrid (with the same 2.5l engine and tb part) was not included in ford's response and whether there is anything additional i can do from the consumer end.i realize this request is some time after the repair but i was never notified of the csp program since my vin number was not included and only recently learned of the ford csp.thank you.charles

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

"throttle body recall" issue, but for some reason i'm not covered car stalled, then restarted, then went into limp mode 2 miles later. Then on aug 4, 2016 throttle body completely failed and i limped back to dealership (fugate ford) where it is awaiting repairs but i am told my vin isn't on throttle body recallcode 2112ford notice 13n03

While driving, the 2009 ford escape hybrid slowed suddenly and while i still had power, i was unable to accelerate. I was on a busy road and there was nothing i could do to get my vehicle to "go". The "service engine soon" light came on and we were able to enter a neighborhood and pull over. We turned off the car and looked through the manual but couldn't find anything. The car started up again and seemed to drive normal but with the "check engine light" illuminated. The dealership said the electronic throttle needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, it appears to be a common issue and while they refused to issue a recall, ford has issued a "customer satisfaction program" to extend the warranty on that particular part - with the exception of the hybrid model. This problem is the exact issue that has been happening in the other escapes and i don't understand why the hybrid is excluded from the extended warranty. That was not only terrifying but dangerous.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled when being driven for an extended amount of time. The failure occurred several times. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Jack madden ford (825 boston-providence turnpike, norwood, ma 02062, (781) 762-4200) was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 18072344f8w3r8. The failure mileage was 129,000.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving 55 mph, the throttle control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was advised not to drive the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.

Driving on 26e in charleston, sc, i suddenly lost power and was unable to accelerate nor maintain speed. I pulled over and turned the vehicle off and in doing so, a grinding sound came from the engine. I restarted the engine and began operating normally for several minutes and began to notice the rpm's would increase and decrease without adjusting pressure on the pedal. At this point i noticed i had limited ability to accelerate and very sluggish.this issue continued to happen sporadically over then next 2 weeks until 9/12 when the vehicle was practically unable to be safely operated due to the lack of power. I took it to an auto part store and the diagnostic indicated trouble code p2112 "throttle body stuck closed".i took to a ford dealer to repair the open recall for electric power steering and asked for an estimate for the throttle body. Car is currently in my driveway awaiting me to schedule an appointment to get repaired on my dollar... Doesn't sound like i am the only one with this issue.

Throttle body replacement after repetitive wrench light, limp mode, and engine light.dealer stated ours was not to have recall, but active warranty extension shows other 2.5l vehicles under 150,000 miles and within the 10 years of the model.looking up the part they are the same part numbers being replaced non hybrids.this is excluding vehicles that not only originally cost more, but have defective parts int eh same year ranges as other 4 cylinders.they also have 6 cylinders showing that this is a more widespread issue with other parts on other throttle bodies outside that engine size.this shows poor manufacture of similar and for mine the same as the non-hybrid.will contact national service next. Hybrids should be included.i have had 5 and feel my current model may be next and is showing some symptoms.this 2009 has always shown some surging surging for the 4 years. It is in the south where moisture is a problem when humidity and ocean salt can amplify when visiting on occasion.the issues appeared on the highway at first in a feeling of surging when on cruise control and could be seen in the rpm, almost like the transmission was slipping.as it progressed we replaced 3 emission parts, and finally in the last month the car was crippled to a point that the check engine light came on and the wrench light may or may not light, but car would not go past 45mph, and even felt sluggish like it was not accelerating making it dangerous to drive to work. We could not call off work to take it to the service garage, and almost had it towed to the shop. This was similar to the 2005 we had except it was due to the coolant circulation pump.the only difference was the engine did not shut down after limping as the other did. They normally are good, but i felt not represented this time, and they were just happy to have me pay. I do have receipt. 485.00

9-27-2013, my car was idling weird at a red light. I looked at the rpm gauge and it was bouncing erratically. At some point my wrench dash light came on. I was driving thru a neighborhood at the time so my car seemed to be ok going between 30-40 mph, but at every red light my car seemed like something was wrong. It wasn't going into electric mode like it normally would. I drove on the interstate for a mile and my car would not accelerate over 40-45 mph so i put on my hazards and did my best driving in traffic. The escape was acting like it was dying at one point and started decelerating so then i kept pressing the gas pedal to the floor and it still wouldn't go over 45 mph . I stopped at a red light about a mile from my house and turned the entire car off and sat for a minute or so. When i started it back up the wrench light was off. I took the car to my nearest ford dealership the next morning and was told that no diagnostic codes were coming up but the tech did some special tests and determined that my mass air flow sensor needs to be replaced. So that's what they did. I asked if they could also replace the throttle body and he told me that they would have to send the part to ford and if there wasn't anything wrong with it they would be out that money so they could not replace the throttle body. My car is at ~78,000 miles so this seems like a problem i should not be having. My wrench light came on once back on 7-22-13, on a road trip but we pulled over on the side of the road, turned the car off and back on and it never came on again until 9-27-13. My car had been idling weird right before my last oil change on aug 30, 2013. I mentioned it to my ford tech then and no diagnostic codes came up so they did a fuel induction cleaning service costing me $145.95. I'm not sure that this even necessary.

Vehicle suddenly loses acceleration due to throttle body and motor assembly.ford has extended their warranty on escape but has no warranty for the hybrid limited.

I was driving at 55 mph on the highway and the wrench light came and following engine light , the car suddenly began to slow down , after that acerlation would not go more than 15mph, checked the code got p2112

Vehicle intermittently enters "limp mode" showing dtc p2112:00-64code: p2112 - throttle actuator control system - stuck closed.instances have occurred at highway speeds, at below 40 mph and starting from a stop. Status

On wed, jun 3, 2015 - i was driving, engine cut out and would not let me go over 35-40, wrench light came on, i pulled over, stopped, turned ignitionoff, waited a minute, turned back on, wrench light stayed out.on fri, jun 5, 2015 - i called the local ford dealer for an appointment, got one for mon, june 8, 2015.as i started driving, the same thing happened except after i started the car and began driving again the wrench light came on and the service engine light came on.i had the car towed to the dealer.mon, jun 8, 2015 - was called and informed the throttle body needed to be replaced, and that it is not covered under the consumer satisfaction program 13n03.was told it only applies to gas models not hybrids.i will be contacting ford to file a formal complaint.

Air conditioning condenser failed, cost $1500 to replace.

Organization owns two 2009 ford escape hybrids.first vehicle has had numerous problems including ac/heating system was repaired under warranty, steering wheel cover disintegrated and was replaced under warranty, check engine light has repeatedly come on dating back to when vehicle was under warranty, but dealership could not replicate the problem or find any codes, abs module went out at 52,000 miles, when module was replaced, code for hydraulics showed another module needed replaced, car is still in shop, and dealer says there are still additional codes that have not been addressed.this vehicle has not been in an accident or any other type of situation that would cause this kind of mechanical and/or electrical problems.when ford customer relations was contacted, they said there was nothing they could do since the car was no longer under warranty at 52,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid.while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and noticed the pedal had fallen into the floor board. The brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact continued to depress the brake pedal until the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics but the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000.

Thank you

Turned the car on and the wrench light was on.driving it felt a little bit strange because it didn't feel like it had good power.turned the car off and back on and it was running fine again.drove about 5 miles and once i got to a parking garage, the check engine light came on and the car went into "limp" mode.pulled into a parking space and had it towed to the dealer.they said that the throttle body was sticking.this is the third failure of this part in 33 months.part was first replaced in september 2015.had a failure of the part they replaced in january 2017 and now a third failure of the same part in jun 2018.the throttle body has been replaced each time that it has failed.this seems like a defective part that only lasts for about 15-18 months.there was less than 20,000 miles put on the car before this part failed in june 2018.

Throttle body problems p2112 and p2111

Today my wrench indicator came on and then roughly 8-10 minutes later my vehicle suddenly lost speed while travelling at roughly 55-60 mph in the fast lane, it dropped down to ~40 mhp no matter how much i pressed the gas. I had to cautiously get over into the slow lane and luckily my exit was close. After the exit there was a red light where i stopped and restarted, then it seemed fine. This is not an isolated incident with the accelerator malfunctioning, in the past year or more i have had 5-6 instances where i start my car first thing in the morning and while in park or reverse the engine revs really high like it's stuck, at 2k-2.5k rpms. It either stops doing that on its own or i restart the car and it stops and seems fine. In the past year i have had 4-5 instances where i was driving at low speed soon after starting my car in the morning and it would not accelerate properly for several seconds, then finally it would. I had one instance perhaps 3 months ago where i was driving on city streets at 25-30 mph when it went into "limp" mode and would only travel at perhaps 15 mph no matter how much i accelerated, i pulled over and restarted the car and it seemed fine after that.this seems to be an obvious product defect similar or the same as the customer satisfaction program 13n03 that i have been reading about. I called ford and they told me that my car was not part of the csp, as hybrid models were not included, which makes absolutely no sense since i am having precisely the same problems that were the subject of the csp and presumably the exact same throttle body parts were used on my car as non-hybrid models.

Car loses power while driving, does not completely stall out, but loses power steering and acceleration. Wrench light sometimes turns on. Once i pull over, stop and restart car, it seems to return to normal functioning.this has happened four times over a period of six months. Dealer diagnosed throttle body failure and replaced throttle body.

Twice in the last 3 months the ford lost acceleration. From 65mph to 40mph..even though i pushed the gas pedal all the way in. And the pedal and acceleration locked in! until i hit the brake the car locked in on the freeway. The situation is getting terrible!! afraid major accident will happen. Please fix this problem ford!!!!

In 2012 a clunking noise and slight lurch began to be felt occasionally when breaking my 2009 escape hybrid.over time the clunk and surge increased in intensity but remained intermittent.when i took my vehicle in for its 40,000 mile maintenance, i requested that the dealership check my breaks.they reported the breaks looked in excellent condition.over the next year the clunk and surge got worse. Suspecting perhaps my transmission or u-joint was the problem, i took the vehicle in to the dealership to diagnose and fix the problem.i was able to leave the car at the dealership for about 1 month.i told them i was not in a hurry, i just wanted it to be fixed properly.several mechanics drove the car and explored possibilities but reported back to me that it was a normal aspect of the hybrid breaking system although somewhat extreme (more severe than most hybrids).one mechanic explained it to me in this way.there are two types of breaking in the hybrid. In electric mode the car uses "simulated breaking." in normal engine drive mode, the car uses "normal" breaking. When i use the break, the computer decides which type of breaking is required and when to switch between the systems. Under certain circumstances, when in between modes, the clunk and surge occurs.the abs breaking system complicates the problem.the mechanic suggested i try to drive so that i can break the car more slowly and gently.i believe the degree of clunk and surge is dangerous and may contribute to the hastened deterioration of my car.i am also worried about the breaks actually failing.i am worried that my 2009 escape hybrid is unsafe. The mechanics at the dealership insisted there was nothing they could do to fix the problem.

I was driving to work.the powertrain light came on, my car started jerking. It wouldn't accelerate and the steering wheel became difficult to control.i had to pull to the side of the road.i turned off the ignition and restarted it.it was ok.that has happened twice since that first incident.

The service wrench would go on and hold and but always seem to go off when i arrived at the dealership so they could never check the problem.this went on for a month until in addition to the light the vehicle would not accelerate above 40 mph.i took the vehicle in and the throttle body was replaced at a charge of $476.99 since my vehicle was no longer under warranty.this upsets me because i find out tonight that this was a known issue and because no official recall was issue, i was forced to pay for the repair.http://www.lemonauto.com/complaints/ford/ford_escape.htm.my vehicle was purchased new and delivered in november 008 - vehicles produced after oct. 15, 2009 have electronic throttle bodies manufactured with a new process that resolved this condition, the government said. The bulletin instructed dealers to replace the throttle body on a number of ford and lincoln vehicles. Depending on the condition of throttle control system malfunction, a driver may experience varying levels of reduced engine performance.in addition, i would have never known about this had it not been for the fact that i received an official recall notice today for something else.

I was driving at a speed of approximately 45 mph and the throttle went out. I could not accelerate above 40 and was very slow to get to that speed. The engine was idling at a higher rpm than normal at stop lights. When driving up hill the speed was about 20 mph and there was no throttle to increase the speed at all. The yellow wrench light came on. Once i made it home and turned off the vehicle, my husband took it to get the codes pulled and the wrench light had gone off and it ran like normal. We could not get the codes pulled.

The wrench light illuminated indicating a power train failure. We immediately took the vehicle to our ford dealership the next morning. Diagnosis revealed a faulty blend door actuator motor in the rear which controls air flow to the hv battery. The dealer said it would not be covered by warranty. The vehicle is only 2 months out of the 3 year warranty period and has only 28,000 miles on it. The power train warranty is 5 years/60,000 and the vehicle is still within that warranty period. The dealer says that component is not covered by the power train warranty even though the vehicle itself and all documentation says it is part of the power train system. This is a highly dangerous problem and if not fixed, could result in the hv battery overheating and causing a fire or serious damage to other components. This is a known problem on 2006-2008 models, including the mariner hybrid, and a tsb was issued for those vehicles. This vehicle was one of the first produced for 2009, so the problem was apparently not fixed and is carried over from the previous model year.

Vehicle power steering failed while turning left. In 2014 my vehicle was serviced for a power steering recall. I did not have a power steering failure until after the software update.

Driving down a major blvd. 4 lights turned on simultaneously, brake, abs, traction control and the "wrench" icon indicating a major failure.brake pedal went to the floor and i experienced an 80% loss of braking power narrowly avoiding a collision with cars stopped in front of me.lights remained on and brakes were severely compromised as i limped to the nearest repair shop with very little braking ability.turned the car off.when i restarted the car all systems were operational and all lights were off.drove the car to a ford dealer the following day for evaluation.dealer diagnosed a compromised battery as the source of failure and replaced the battery.dealer service rep denied this problem had anything to do with hydraulic control unit as other reports mention with the exact same symptoms on your site,as well denied problems with the master cylinder or regenerative braking system. The battery didn't explain the problem to me, why then did the car continue to drive normally for a while following the failure before the battery was replaced?even if this is the problem, no battery light indicated a problem prior to failure.am i to expect brake failure to be what announces my battery might be in need of replacement?no fail safe mechanism appears to be in place on this vehicle.treacherous.i'll likely sell the car as i don't want my less experienced 16 yr old to be confronted with this issue. I was lucky to have left plenty of following distance, without which i most certainly would have become the victim of an accident.

In 2013, on several occasions, while driving, the car lost power completely under acceleration, while going uphill on city streets.i had to pull over to the side, turn the car off, wait and try to start the car again.after several attempts the car turned on and was able to drive normally.after the first incident, the engine indicator light came on.at the dealership, they informed me the throttle body accentuator was faulty, not under warranty ( car 3 years old at time) because it was really an electrical malfunction.thewas replaced in 2013.now again in 2016, engine light on again...same diagnosis.part replaced again, not under warranty.dealership says it has no indications that this is a common problem in the ford escape hybrids.engine light still on...yet to be resolved.

I was driving my 2009 ford escape hybrid home from work, on the highway during rush hour, when the car went into "limp mode" nearly causing an accident. I could not accelerate at all. I barely avoided a 16 wheeler and made it to the freeway shoulder while hitting a concrete curb nearly causing me to lose control and damaging my right front tire. It was terrifying, and this happened less than one year after the steering went out, nearly causing an accident also.the wrench sign was light up and a message to pull over was on.i was able to turn the car off and restart it and was able to drive home. It has happened 3 more times, driving at various speeds, in the last 2 days making the car basically undriveable. A code 2112 was pulled from the car and i was told that the electronic throttle body was bad and that there was a customer satisfaction program that shouldreplace this. When i called ford with my vin number, i was told that my 2009 hybrid was not included in the customer satisfaction program 13n03.i went online and found numerous other 2009 escape hybrids with this exact same problem that were not covered. These vehicles need to be included in this customer satisfaction program before someone gets killed!!!

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

On september 11, 2009 i was involved in a rear-end collision.i was hit from behind by a towing truck while i was stopped at a red light.i spun around and went into the intersection.there was significant damage to my vehicle, a 2009 ford escape hybrid.upon inspection i noted that the back of the front driver's seat (the one i was sitting in) had collapsed backward so that the back and headrest were laying down and in the back (still attached to the seat however).i was alarmed as if i had someone in the back behind me they would have sustained serious injury if not death.i was alone however and sustained some aches and pains including a neck injury.i do not know whether the vehicle will be totaled yet.i do not know if i will have ongoing neck issues.i assume the back of one's seat is to remain upright in a vehicle crash.i looked on line and this seems to be a defect in my ford.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the check braking system, traction control and emergency brake warning light was illuminated. The contact drove to his destination. The contact stated while restarting the vehicle, the contact had to depress the brake pedal to the floor and use the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not drivable. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was referred to local dealer. The vehicle was taken to local dealer nick mayer lincoln westlake located at 24400 center ridge rd, westlake, oh 44145, (440) 835-3700, where it was diagnosed with needing the brake master cylinder, brake booster, electronic control unit and module and abs hydraulic unit to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired as of yet. The manufacturer had been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 101,000.

Sudden and immediate loss of braking system without any warning lights etc. I had started car, backed down my driveway and entered roadway when abs and brake warning lights appeared and i had no braking system operating. I had to be towed to a service station.

Brakes weak on manual mode almost no stopping power, codes c1320., hydraulic travel sensor circuit, hcu, abs light on, service brakes lights on, no hcu compressor coming on at pre start any more. Suggested need new hcu, at a part cost of $3889.00 plus 10 hours of labor to bleed system putting repair cost over $5k, car blue books at $3.5k, how can this be feasible, thanks for the disposable car ford.!!!

I own a 2009 ford escape hybrid and on june 28, 2014 when i was driving the brakes suddenly failed. The red brake warning lamp lit with an alarm sound and message - 'check brake system'. The brakes did not work and reverted to the fail safe mode where it required pedal to the floor to stop the vehicle. I pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and stopped. On restarting the vehicle the brakes returned to normal operation. This was very concerning as it could have resulted in an accident/injury. It did not occur for 2 weeks then on july15th, 2014 while my wife was driving the vehicle on the highway the brakes failed again with the same message and alarm. She had use the hand break and pull the vehicle to the side. On shutting down and restarting the brakes returned to normal operation. I have taken the vehicle to ford dealership and they have not been able to reproduce the issue and the brake systems checked out as working properly. There were some error codes but they were not able to provide any conclusive evidence as to the cause of this issue. All they said was there was a communication error and they cannot do anything about it. I had the vehicle taken to another repair shop after the second incident and they told me the same. They asked me to bring it back when it happens again but i do not know if they understand the risk of driving a vehicle with brake systems that can fail at any time. I have read in internet and few blogs about this issue with the ford escape hybrid vehicles and it seems to related to a flawed design. Its a shame that ford is not taking any action on it. I do not understand what they are waiting for, anything involving brakes not working should be considered very serious and actions need to be taken quickly.

I have had the suv for 3 months. I'm experiencing total break loss. The first time i almost rear ended another vehicle.

Car passed safety inspection in may 2018.brake pads were replaced in may 2017. On the highway when my brakes failed in june 2018. Was going about 55 mph.had car towed. Problem was diagnosed as a master cylinder failure. Told since the brake fluid resevoir was full and no obvious signs of leakage, this couldn't be predicted or prevented.repair made.brakes failed again. I was on a city street and was going about 25 mph.problem diagnosed as a de-linking of the computer systems.brakes failed again (third time in a month). Unable to replicate.there is no warning. The warning comes on at the same time as the failure. Brakes fail unexpectedly in a parking lot.going about 2 mph..third time car was in a parking lot. I feel fortunate not to have crashed.i no longer feel safe in my ford escape.

Hydraulic central unit failed, requiring replacement to prevent failure of the system and loss of braking ability of the car.

Backing out of garage at home brakes failed.was unable to stop almost backed in to a parked car. Since backing out was going very slow and pushed brake as hard as possible to the floor finally getting the car to stop.the abs light, parking brake light, and check brake system came up.car was taken to service station in neighborhood and ignition turned off.started car back up and no lights were on and brake functioning was almost normal.

I was driving in heavy stop and go traffic on the highway for 10 minutes.all of a sudden the emergency brake light illuminates on the dash board, the electric panel reads "check brake system" and i loose all braking power.i slam on the brakes as hard as possible, but it barely stops.i pull over on the shoulder and turn the car off and back on and the lights go away and the brakes work again.i have the car looked at on three different occasions by two different dealerships and they can't find a problem.fast forward to september 12, 2013.i am in heavy traffic while driving from massachussetts to michigan and the same problem happens twice in heavy traffic about 4 hours apart.taking to the dealership on monday, sept 16th.

Driving down hill on dry pavement at 35mph.gentle braking for red traffic light.everything normal until slowed nearly to a stop. Then a sudden loss of braking effect requiring extreme pressure on brake. Simultaneous with the loss of braking a clunking sound was heard and several warning lights came on including brake, abs, & traction lights. Drove to a safe location with the warning lights still on and the brakes requiring markedly more force to apply. Engine never stalled.once parked i turned off the car and removed the key.when i restarted the car all the lights went out and the brakes behaved normally.drove the car to nearest dealer. They found no codes and could find nothing wrong.called national service number and was assigned case # [xxx]. Almost hit car ahead of me.now i am afraid to operate vehicle.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Upon starting car, check brake system warning came on. Attempted to take it to dealer but, when approaching stop sign, brake pedal went to the floor and could barely stop. I made it back home and also noted that the vehicle could no longer hold itself up even on a small incline. This happened for no apparent reason and brakes had been working as normal with no indication of wear. Had tow truck take it local ford dealer and the driver said he tested the brakes and they were working. Once at the dealer, the service manager said he drove it around parking lot and all seemed fine. I told him how the wrench warning light (power train) had come on approximately 3 times in a month, but never stayed on after vehicle shut off and restart. He said that all these warnings should be stored in the computer but when checked, the system was totally clear of any errors or warnings. The ford dealer is not sure what to do with it now, after having it for over 4 days, and they are concerned because everything to appears to working normally and no issues with the brakes themselves. I feel it is unsafe to have a car where the brakes can spontaneously stop working, for no apparent reason, which seems to lead to a software malfunction.

I was driving in my work parking garage when i got a, "check brake system" warning on my dash, and a couple of dashboard lights lit up, including the emergency brake light. I suddenly realized that i had no brakes, and i was pressing my brake pedal to the floor in an attempt to stop the car. Luckily i was going about 5-10 mph and there were no cars or people in front of me. I was able to continue around the parking garage until the car slowed, then used my emergency brake to stop the car. I started reading the manual trying to figure out what went wrong, and that didn't help. I turned the car back on and there were no warnings or lights on my dash, so i tentatively moved the car. The brakes worked perfectly. I drove it to a nearby mechanic shop to have it looked at before it acted up again. They said i needed to take it to a dealership since it was a hybrid and they were getting high voltage battery codes that they weren't experienced with. The dealership mechanics spend the next 2 days trying to figure out the issue and recreate the problem. They were finally able to recreate it and told me the abs control module had an electrical issue and needs to be replaced, for approximately $2,000, due to no fault of my own. Everything else on the car is in great condition, and my car only has 100,000 miles, so i am going to foot the bill.

My abs brakes on my 2009 ford escape hybrid engine light came on and the rpm ramped while i was going 65 mph down a highway and the front passenger brakes started smoking.i took it in to have it fixed and it was going to cost $5700 to fix because of some hcu unit that failed while i was driving at pretty good rate of speed.i am glad it didn't throw me off into a ditch or catch on fire with me in it.what a crappy design this is.wow!!!scary stuff.

Check brakes sign came on all of a sudden i was going slow so i pulled the car to the side and pressed on the breaks but the car would not stop and the breaks failed. I turned the car off and put it in park it made this loud sound and finally stopped. Turned the car back on and the brakes were fine got home i was terrified thinking what if i was on the highway. First it was steering and now it's the brakes. I don't think i can drive my ford escape anymore thinking i am safe.

Brakes have given out, while coming to a red stop light luck that no one was around when i ran the light sent to dealer they could not duplicate issue but they did a update on steering and knowwhen backing up steering gets stiff, causing turn radius to become extreme, but only does it sometimes.went back to dealer no problem found and could not duplicate problem.hoping someone find problem before a person or persons gets killed!!!

The initial incident in which the hydraulic brakes failed in my 2009 ford escape hybrid was in early june 2015. The vehicle was serviced at the dealership on june 17, 2015 at 57,164 miles. The service department was unable to duplicate the brake failure: where hydraulic brakes go soft, making it very difficult to stop, and then the check brake system light and the abs light turn on. The vehicle must be turned off and restarted for the system to reset itself. The hydraulic brakes failed again on july 25, followed by two more failures on july 26, 2015. The only common factors that may be linked to my brake failure incidents are use of power window and turning airconditioning on/off multiple times. The vehicle spent a full day at the dealership (july 27), and baffled service personnel are waiting for ford hotline to provide direction.

Hcu malfunctioning causing brake system failure while driving. Deadly flaw in brake system design

Brake systems lightgoes on when starting the car and we lose 90% of the brakes .this has happened 6 times.ford has not been able to diagnose problem. There was one attempt to fix by tightening low fluid switch on brake master cylinder.a week later, we got the same brake system light warning as well as an anti-skid warning and a power train warning.we drive this vehicle on mountain roads .this problem has occurred over the last 6 months.

When i started the vehicle this morning there was a complete failure of the braking system.a ford dealership reported that a wire had broken and this resulted in a electrical failure in the braking system that caused the entire braking system to fail.had this wire broke while i was on the highway it would have likely caused a major accident.

The vehicle has approximately 7780 miles on it. While driving the vehicle a complete failure of the brakes occurred. When the brake pedal was deployed it did not create braking power even being pressed to the floor. To stop the vehicle it was down shifted and then placed in park after it coasted to a stop. After turning the vehicle off and restarting it the breaks seem to work again. This is the first occurrence. The dealer is being notified today. Consumer stated complaint was submitted years ago, vehicle was sold updated 6/8/18

Brakes failed at low speed with brakes feeling like there was no pressure. The 3 lights for the braking system were on when this event occurred.

With absolutely no warning my brakes completely failed!!!!

Two weeks ago, at 50,000 miles and just back from the dealer's service, my brakes failed at start-up: very little braking action and a warning on the dash. I drove it around the block and went through four stop signs. I had it towed back to the dealer, where it has been ever since. The technician there found a code for "over-extended brake pedal" -- naturally the result when the brakes fail and the pedal goes to the floor. The service manager says they cannot duplicate the failure despite frequent attempts, and that ford will not authorize repair unless they can see the failure for themselves. The "customer service" manager at ford headquarters, implies that ford's engineers are unaware of this kind of problem and have no explanation for it -- a position that is belied by the many posts on ford escape hybrid brake problem forums. The dealer's technician was more honest: he said "we can't replace the system without ford's approval, and they won't approve that because of the high-dollar parts."my reading of more than 150 posts on the web shows that 1) this problem has plagued the escape hybrid since 2005, 2) the problem often goes away immediately, only to recur unexpectedly later, and 3) ford usually refuses to fix the problem, even when the car is, like mine, still under warranty.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the check brakes, abs and traction control warning lamps illuminated. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 25,000.updated 11/15/13the consumer stated on three occasions, the brake became very soft and all the warning lights illuminated.updated 12/3/13the consumer experienced a fourth brake failure. The dealer stated it would cost $3,600 to replace the hydraulic brake system.updated 09/17/14after inspecting the vehicle, the dealer determined the problem was the brake pressure switch. It was replaced at a cost of $670. Updated 10/28/14

We purchased the car new on august 11, 2009.on or about september 18, 2009 while traveling down a steep hill at approximately 25 to 30 mph we lost brake power.specifically, there was no response as brake foot moved 2/3 of the way to the floor.in last 1/3 of the way as braking foot moved to and made contact with the floor, there was only a weak response.it took several seconds to stop the vehicle.brake light was on.we were terrified.we took the car to the nearest dealer.they had the car for 5 days, after which time they informed us that they had replaced a faulty booster travel switch.they assured us that the problem would not reoccur.however, on or about october15, 2009, the problem did reoccur.this time my spouse was driving and had leveled out after rising a steep hill.he attempted to apply the brakes.again, no response for the first 2/3 of the way as braking foot moved to floor.only a weak response in last 1/3 as braking foot hit the floor.brake light was on.again, my spouse was unable to timely stop the vehicle.my spouse was terrified.both times, when we shut the car off and turned it back on, normal braking function resumed.we took the car to the nearest dealer again.they kept the car for 18 days.ford corporate sent their engineer to oversee the repairs.they were apparently able to duplicate the error in their testing of the vehicle.they replaced the wiring harness and have stated that the vehicle is safe to drive. However, we are afraid to drive the vehicle based on our two scary experiences with this new car with less than 1400 miles on it, as well as what we have read about other recurring problems with fev filed with nhtsa and other sources such as the "ford hybrid escape brake problem" forum at edmunds.com.

About 2 weeks ago the check brake warning light and a red brake warning light came on but the brakes were not affected, and the lights did not reappear after the car was stopped and restarted.i still took it to the dealer but nothing wrong was found. Yesterday while driving home the check brake warning light and red brake warning lights came on again, a chime or alarm-type sound went off, and when i pressed the brake pedal all the way down the brakes didn't respond. To get home i had to use the emergency brake every time i needed to stop.the car was towed to the dealer last night and i was told the brakes were working fine when they started the car this morning.i haven't heard anything further.

Check brake system and red emergency light came on. Pressed brakes and car did not stop. Hit concrete wall.1st time at dealership, bad sensor.ordered new sensor, and got car back.same day same lights came on.2nd time at dealership, changed abs module.got car back on 23rd and on the 24th lights came back on and car continued to roll even though i was pressing brakes.car is back at dealership since the 24th.

I was pulling out of a parking spot when i found that steering was extremely difficult. It felt similar to what happened in an old car i had when my power steering fluid reservoir had a leak. I could still move it, but it required a lot of effort and was dangerous to drive. I took it to a repair shop, and they told me they could not help me. They said there was a recall on the system involved (the electric power assist system), but that it was not active for some reason. They told me i had to go to the dealer. I took my car to the dealer and it was a $1900 fix. They said i needed a new motor/steering column. The first place told me it was due to programming, though. It should be covered under the recall, but my vin is not included. This seems incredibly suspicious that i am suddenly having the exact same problems that there are recalls for and that other people say they have had problems with themselves.

While driving the power steering just failed, the steering column became very hard to use and needs replaced.i had felt a small chimy in the steering wheel at a stop a day or 2 beforehand, that is the only possible warning, but didn't repeat. It just failed while running errands in town, dashboard problem lit up and is worse than a car without any power steering. Even though i was told it is safe to drive without replacing the power steering, the difficulty of it makes me wonder how safe it really is for most drivers.date is appx, but very close to end of dec2018.

Total power steering failure on start up when backing out of driveway.the power steering has been intermittent since then.seems most likely to fail when cold.so far it has started working once warmed up and restarted.the vehicle is very hard to control when the power steering is not working. I'm concerned it will fail while driving and cause an accident.i plan on taking it to the dealership today.

Our 17 year old son was making a turn in heavy traffic when the power steering went out. He nearly crashed into a truck due to the fact that the car became nearly impossible to turn and he was taken by surprise. He able to barely muscle the car away from the other vehicle and pulled over and called me (his father). It turns out my wife had taken the car into ford just last fall to have recall work done on it, and only now, am i finding out that the faulty part involved in the recall work was not replaced by ford. In fact, nobody's vehicles had the faulty part replaced. They just "adjusted" it. How the nhtsa could allow this is beyond me. Because of the near collision that occurred in this, i will most likely file a suit against ford for giving us the impression that a faulty part was replaced when in fact it was not. I own 3 fords and am taking this very seriously.

Was getting in vehicle to go work. Started engine and put into reverse to pull out of driveway and noticed how hard it was to turn steering wheel. Couldn't turn steering wheel hardly at all. Pulled back up on driveway and turned vehicle off. Started vehicle again and tried again. Was able to drive vehicle but the power steering was not working.it was like diving a old manual steering vehicle; very stiff and took all my might to make turns.during the day; wednesday called ford dealership and talked with a service mgr. Who looked up information on our service records.he told me we had brought the 2009 escape hybrid for the 2014 recall back in sept. 2014 and had it serviced. They had reset the computer and said it was fixed.it is now april 2017 and have had power steering failure and ford service mgr. Told me to bring in vehicle the would hook up and run diagnostic on vehicle which will cost me $127 plus the cost of whatever is wrong. Ford will not cover any costs that may be incurred.my vehicle did not give any warning of power steering failure while i drove it or did it ever have any sensor lights come on.as this is a problem that was recognized by ntsb and ford to cause recallin past and ford didn't fix problem so wouldn't happen they should be responsible to cover any repairs and costs so i do not have any accidents with the vehicle now or in the future. I should not have to worry every time i get into drive that i could have power steering failure.

Vehicle power steering failed while turning left. In 2014 my vehicle was serviced for a power steering recall. I did not have a power steering failure until after the software update.

When driving at all speeds, but more so at slower "city" speeds, the power steering has failed and control can only be maintained via manual steering which is difficult to control and maneuver.this vehicle had been "reprogrammed" without any reported symptoms in 2014 and has now experienced these issues approximately 10k miles later.this reprogramming was done through a previous recall program that did not have an adequate repair to solve the problem.

My 2009 ford escape (escape hybrid)was being driven into a turn at 35+ miles per hour. The steering locked up as i entered the turn which forced me to hit the brakes and go skidding across full speed oncoming traffic - i narrowly avoided a head on crash, which likely would have resulted in many injuries or worse. The vehicle came to rest after skidding across the traffic lanes in the safety lane area ofthe far side of the road.after stopping, i found the steering wheel was still 99% locked up - i turned off the car and then after a few minutes to gain my composure, i restarted the car and found that steering had been restored - i drove home(nearby) at a speed of 25 mph. Vehicle was taken to the ford dealer who confirmed that the torque sensor / steering column / power steering system - had failed causing steering lockup. An entire steering column unit was replaced at my cost of~$1500.the unexpected failure of this critical component is very likely going to cause accidents, injuries and or fatalities as more ford escapes enter the mileage at which the steering column / power steering fails and locks up.

Vehicle has had intermittent loss of power assisted steering function. System provides no warning of steering function loss. Currently the steering is showing evidence of the steering torque motor feedback loss. Produces small oscillations in steering wheel while sitting in park or at idle.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse of the driveway at approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was turned off and on couple of times and then the steering ability returned to normal. The vehicle was taken to the chapman ford lancaster dealer of petersburg pennsylvania that determined that the steering wheelmodule failedand needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. ...updated 11/15/17 updated 11/28/2017

Complete power steering failure upon starting car and leaving a parking space.

The loss of power steering first occurred in november 2015. I got an appointment with my local ford dealer in december 2015. They reset the power steering module. After driving without any issues for two weeks, the power steering is gone again. Before the reset, switching off the engine would remedy the issue, now i have to drive the vehicle without power steering and my local ford dealer is saying the part is not covered in the recall and its costing $1,600 for the part and labor.

The power steering assist has gone out.ford did a recall on this part but if you weren't having any problems with it at the time they did the recall they would just flash your ecu and call it good.this doesn't actually prevent the failure from happening.so eventually the power steering fails like it did to me while i was driving on the freeway, which is a known problem.they then want to charge you to have the steering angle torque sensor replaced.this is a safety issue and should be replaced by ford at their expense.

The automobile steering became stiff and wouldn't turn. I had to manually turn the car at the corner. It happened within the week 3 times.i took the car to be checked at the dealer who explained that they could not help me because they could not duplicate the incident.my car is under warranty only to 36,000 miles so i am concerned as to thesafety of the steering on highway and on surface streets, as it happen periodically.

On three occasions, the power steering was not activated when the vehicle was started.restarting the vehicle corrected the issue.luckily, no sudden loss of power steering occurred while driving, only immediately after starting vehicle.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering failed intermittently without warning. Upon investigation, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) which she linked to the failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where they informed her that an unknown sensor had caused the power steering failure. Additionally, the contact was informed that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. The contact was informed that the vin was not under recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

Two times on 2/1 the power steering quite working for a few seconds while driving on a mountain freeway.the safe issue occurred two other times in the past few weeks.the power steering is working find and all of a sudden it stops and it's very difficult to get the vehicle to turn.very scary for my wife is the one that drive this car.last night when it happened she had two children in the car with her.

My 2009 ford escape hybrid has a problem with starting the ignition. It has been getting worse and worse for many months. I have to push it in and try over and over before the car starts. It also has so many of my warning lights on even tho the problems fixed or replaced.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving 65 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning and became difficult to steer. The vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. The contact powered off the engine. The vehicle was restarted and was able to drive normally. The contact also stated that the failure occurred three times, and was intermittent the first time. The contact stated that sometimes when the vehicle was powered off and restarted, it did not always correct the failure. The vehicle was taken to south bay ford (located at 5100 rosecrans ave, hawthorne, ca 90250, (301) 584-7641) where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). No further assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

While driving at about 30 miles per hour, the steering wheel has locked up on two different occasions ... Once recently, and once about a year ago.in both instances, i tried to turn the wheel to follow a curve but the wheel was locked.i quickly hit the brake to slow the car, and proper steering then resumed.i'm very frightened that steering may not recover in future instances, or that even the short term loss of steering will result in a wreck, accident, injury, or death.

While traveling down a winding road, the steering locked and i did not have control for a few seconds, then it came back.this has occasionally happened in the past, but thought is was something related to the battery.the battery was replaced a few months ago, and obviously not the issue.brought to ford dealer.they said i the steering column replaced to the tune of $1300.00 plus.they said it was a faulty sensor to the power steering.they confirmed that there is no warning with this and recommended that i not drive the car, even though they did not have the part, nor did they offer me alternative transportation.if they view it as this dangerous, and the part is backordered because it is so common, how on earth is this not a recall covered byford?are they waiting for me to have an accident?i have to drive the car to get to work in order to replace the part.this is outrageous.perhaps there is legal action to take.additionally, the dealer wants me to "prepay" for the part.i have never, in my entire life, prepaid for a part from the dealer.my mechanic cannot fix it because ford has made it impossible for a third party to do this.this is my first ford and will be my last.

My ford escape 2009 started experiencing power steering issues and ended up with no power steering. I have contacted ford and they were of no help whatsoever. I then proceeded to contact nhtsa at 1-888-327-4236 and filed a complaint. The agent gave me a complaint number and suggested to contact the federal trade commission at 877 382 4357, which i intend to do when their office opens. From my research this very issue has been recalled for my model & make both in the united states & canada. My particular model vin was not part of the recall. I have discovered that i am not alone in this power steering issue boat but ford has not been proactive. I strongly suggest everyone do the same complaint filings as i firmly believe that ford - on their own - will not fess up to anything and will provide no assistance.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape. The contact stated that start-up of the vehicle, excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. Upon investigation, he discovered nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) which he linked to the failure. The contact drove the vehicle to a dealer where they diagnosed the vehicle with a defective steering column assembly; however, his vehicle was not included in the recall. The contact then took the vehicle an independent mechanic where they diagnosed the vehicle with the same failure and informed him that his vehicle should be covered under the recall. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and referred him nhtsa for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the independent mechanic. The failure mileage was unknown.

Electric power steering failed for 1-2 seconds then returned to normal.this had happened several times in the past.ford dealer followed technical service bulletin and replaced a connector.per ford, the technical service bulletin exists because this has happened on other vehicles.ford is treating this as a common, out-of-warranty component failure.electric power steering is required for safe operation of this vehicle.had this happened at highway speeds it could have had serious consequences.because of this i believe this issue should be elevated in level.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering, while idle and at various speeds. The contact stated the vehicle was operable however, the steering column needed additional effort to be moved. The power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed for the issue. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted however, no further assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

While backing out of my driveway, my power steering suddenly and completely went out.a dashboard light came on which read "power steering assist fault."i drove to my ford dealership and was told that my vin was not on the recall list and the list was "vin specific." i was told by the dealership the part that needed replacement is the torque sensor which is one of the parts specifically mentioned in the recall for the 2009 escape.thenhtsa website called the recall 14s05.i have been told it will cost approx. $900.00 to repair my vehicle.

Two months ago, we took our vehicle into the local ford dealership for a firmware upgrade that was part of a wider ford recall for some power-steering issue.we had not experienced any steering issues at all with our vehicle, but we went ahead with the firmware upgrade to be on the safe side.well, two days ago, we started our vehicle, and steering was uncommonly difficult.we then turned off the ignition, and re-started the vehicle; after the re-start, steering was back to normal.then yesterday, we started the vehicle, and steering again was uncommonly difficult.after two re-starts, the difficult steering persisted.when i say "difficult" here, i really mean hard -- only a physically strong and fit person could manage to turn the steering wheel.the maneuvering felt so unsafe, that i felt compelled after a single drive to take our vehicle into the local ford dealership this morning.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that after entering the vehicle and starting the vehicle, the steering wheel was difficult to turn. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle three times and the vehicle started to operate as designed. The vehicle was taken to carcare import and domestic (350 rockland rd, hendersonville, tn 37075 (615) 822-5002) where the vehicle was diagnosed and the contact was informed that the power steering control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact mentioned nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) as a possible solution to the failure however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall. The failure mileage approximately 129,088.the consumer stated the vehicle had been taken in to be repaired on multiple occasions but, the failure persisted.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving 30 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning and a wrench warning indicator illuminated. The contact and a bystander pushed the vehicle over to the side of the road. The contact called an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the vin. The approximate failure mileage was 211,000.

Power steering assist failed while driving on the freeway in the rain. I've heard of other cars off this model have the same issue do wonder if it's a systemic problem.

On oct 25th 2008 we purchased a 2009 ford escape hybrid from encinitas ford.on april 11, 2009(mge 3809.4)while driving between 40-45 up a small incline and the steering wheel jerked hard to the right and put me into the other lane of traffic beside me.this same instance just happened again on 12/10/09 (6856.0 mge) but i was going between 30-35 under battery and trying to curve to the left when the steering stiffened up again quickly and veered me to the right off of the road. I dropped the car at the dealership on 12/14/09 and they can't find anything wrong to come and get it.i am so upset that they think this is an acceptable solution.if i were going even 5 miles per hour faster, i would hit a very large oak tree.i do not feel safe driving this vehicle, and am very afraid that my chances for an accident to myself or others has just increased 10-fold!i called ford motor company on 12/14/09 at 4:30pm (pac time) and filled out their online complaint form.on 12/16/09 at 9:17am, a rep from ford called me back and said he is opening a "claim" to investigate the problem.he was headed out of town and asked if he could have until tuesday, 12/22/09 to return a call to me between 12:00-4:00pmi said that was fine.

When driving in the mountains the power steering assist fault indicator came up and vehicle lost power steering completely.

Power steering went out in2017(recall 14s05 was appled in 2014)

Brakes have given out, while coming to a red stop light luck that no one was around when i ran the light sent to dealer they could not duplicate issue but they did a update on steering and knowwhen backing up steering gets stiff, causing turn radius to become extreme, but only does it sometimes.went back to dealer no problem found and could not duplicate problem.hoping someone find problem before a person or persons gets killed!!!

Power steering failed while operating vehicle on public roads. I believe the falure was caused by a faulty steering torque sensor htat was the subject of ford recall notice 14s05. The vehicle was serviced by dealer to address this recall and the dealer performed a "software update" to correct the issue. "the update allegedly would make sure the suvs wouldn't lose power steering while driving and would provide audio and visual warnings if problems occurred. If a driver received warnings, they were told to return the vehicle to the dealer." the audio and visual alerts did not occur and the power steering system failed leaving only manual unassisted steering, making operation of the vehicle unsafe.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving unknown speeds, the steering column vibrated and was difficult to maneuver without warning. The vehicle was taken to jim hudson ford (1201 w main st, lexington, sc 29072) where it was diagnosed that the steering torque sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. This car steering gets locked while driving and gets very hard while turning.

First occurrence driving at approx 45 miles per hour made a left turn into a parking lot and lost power steering.was able to move to parking spot, turn off car then restarted and power steering was restored.second incident was traveling at approx 50 miles per hour made a left turn, again lost power steering, was not able to stop car safely due to traffic and had to continue without power steering for approx 1 mile until i could safe stop the vehicle.turned off car and restarted and power steering was restored.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving various low speeds, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact performed a vin tool search and discovered that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The dealer (long mcarthur ford, 3450 south 9th st, salina, ks 67401, (785) 823-2237) serviced the recall. The dealer later recommended that the steering wheel be replaced. The dealer could not perform the repair due to an absence of the necessary diagnostic trouble code, which would authorize a steering wheel replacement or a torque angle sensor replacement. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: cas-15217422. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.

My vehicle had a recall 14s05 involving power steering done 7/23/14 yesterday while at the post office, when i started the car and went to back up the steering wheel was difficult to turn and handle. Able to get home without power assist, but now after researching this problem, i understand that since the recall done was just a computer upgrade and nothing physical done, i have no recourse except to have the power steering column replace at my expense.this is a deception on ford's part, as most people would take the car in for recall without questioning the procedure to be done.ford should be paying for every faulty steering problem as a matter of safety and avoiding any loss of lives

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving approximately 35 mph, the steering failed without warning. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and the steering power resumed. The dealer replaced the steering column at a cost of $ 1700.00.

Thought i felt something strange in the steering while traveling at over 60mph around a curve on the freeway. 10 minutes down the road and after turning into driveway the steering suddenly failed. I almost hit the entry gate. Steering became very stiff like driving a tank, the eps system completely failed.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. The contact stated that ford issued an unknown recall regarding the power steering module. The vehicle was taken to friendly ford (2250 south rd, poughkeepsie, ny 12601, (845) 462-1900) and no failure code was found. The contact stated that the vehicle was currently experiencing power steering failures. The dealer diagnosed that the power steering module needed to be replaced, but they would not cover the repairs because they already addressed the recall during the earlier visit. The contact was advised by the dealer to escalate his complaint to a tier 2 level. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer and the dealer later stated that a tier 2 inquiry could not be done because the case was closed. The failure mileage was 155,000.

I own a 2009 ford escape limited hybrid. The pscm failed. I paid $1,322.41 to get it fixed. I read in motor trend that there is a recall - 104765, ford recall 14s05 -for this exact, specific problem with 2009 ford escapes. I called "ford customer service", opened case [xxx], and was told that the recall applies to every car but mine because my vin wasn't included! however, my problem is not with my vin, but with the exact, specific part that was referenced in the recall. Ford admitted that it manufactured and installed a defective pscm, but is hiding behind a lame excuse that it doesn't apply to my defective pscm because it (ford) neglected to list my vin in the recall. Ford customer service assured me that they would contact nhtsa but i do not believe them, so i am. I think they say this to blow-off owners with complaints so nhtsa doesn't find out about them. They lost my trust with their lame excuse - "it's your vin that's the problem, not our defective part." feel free to contact ford and reference my complaint.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was driving low speeds in a parking lot and crashed due to a power steering failure.i was trying to turn 90 degrees but it was extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel even with both arms.i had a low-speed crash that wrecked my front end.i checked with ford dealer but they stated the power steering recall did not apply to my ford escape hybrid.i'm disappointed that the same faulty steering system in my hybrid is not covered.

My 2009 ford escape hybrid has a problem with starting the ignition. It has been getting worse and worse for many months. I have to push it in and try over and over before the car starts. It also has so many of my warning lights on even tho the problems fixed or replaced.

I was driving at 55 mph on the highway and the wrench light came and following engine light , the car suddenly began to slow down , after that acerlation would not go more than 15mph, checked the code got p2112

No crank, no start.ignition switch or starter issue.been going on for years.if i pushed in and giggled it would start for a while, now it will not start at all.i had to push so hard to start it, the key almost broke several times.

Vehicle lost all power when pressing accelerator at 40 mph.had to coast to bottom of hill and pull over, wrench light came on.no response when pressing accelerator.vehicle sat for about 40 min, wrench light cleared and we were able to drive the vehicle to a ford dealership.ford dealership said throttle body and gasket needed to be replaced.model not covered under consumer satisfaction program even though manufactured during time frame and same plant as other vehicles that were within the program.

Throttle control/powertrainwarning light come up.

While driving you lose power/speed no matter how much you push the gas pedal, an alert symbol comes on the dash especially on the freeway. You have to get over and turn the car off and then back on and it will work for a while. They tell me it is the throttle body that needs repair but my vin is not one of the effected ones...

My wife was turning around in a parking lot. When she started to shift out of reverse the accelerator surged, she could not stop the car with the brakes, she shifted into park in a desperate attempt to stop, and slid sideways into a cement wall causing considerable damage to the car and shaking up the occupants.

I was driving on the highway in traffic when the wrench light came onthe dashboard.i applied pressure to the accelerator but the vehicle was not accelerating.i was moving at about 10 mph when this happened and i was able to get to the middle of the highway where there was someone i could wait for traffic to open up to get to the shoulder, the vehicle moved at about 2 mph from the center to the shoulder, this was while having the accelerator fully pushed down.i turned the vehicle off and then back on and the wrench light turned off and i was able to drive home without the issue occurring again.prior to this, in september 2015, i had the same experience where the wrench light turned on and the accelerator provided no power to the car, this was repaired by replacing the throttle body.less than 30,000 miles have been put on the car since this repair was made.i saw there was an issue covered under consumer satisfaction program 13n03, however, the hybrid type of escape was not covered under this.

Poor acceleration, lost power on highway.would not accelerate with gas pedal pushed.pulled over side and restart.enough power to make it home 10 miles but still poor acceleration.

When i start my car i mainly come from a resident area or a parking lot where the speed limit is 10-15mph once i hit the main street where the speed limit is 35 mph my car wont accelerate to the proper speed even though my gauges are showing the speed im supposed to be at after 8 seconds the car shoots off to 35mph and when i brake to slow down it rolls again at 5-10mph. This is very scary especiallyin congested areas and trying to pull over in an emergency is very difficult when my car gets stuck in a slow speed. It is now so constant its every day the only way to bypass it i have to pull over turn off the car lock and unlock 2-3 times and it will start up normally

While driving on the highway, my check engine light came on and the car immediately switched from gas to electric. From that point on, the car would not transition back to gas.took the car to ford and had to have the throttle body and motor assembly replaced.

The contact owns a 2009 ford escape hybrid. While driving approximately 30 mph with the heat on the engine light illuminated. He set the heat to 70 degrees and it became hotter than normal in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for the failure.he was advised by the dealer that the air blend box actuator was defective and replaced it at the contacts expense. The failure mileage was 37,000 and the current mileage was 38,000.
