Lighting control module (lcm) failed, resulting in a loss of headlights.

2003ford crown victoria. Consumer states air bags did not deploy during crash *tgwthe consumer suffered a minor injury and his wife was severely injured. Updated 09/18/12updated 02/09/12. Updated customer address. Updated 10/04/12

Automobile accident - highway - hit center concrete wall multiple times - both front and back of automobile.air bags did not deploy!

Hello i was informed that my vehicle the 03 crown victoria had a recall on the lighting control module which has not been replace in my car but ford is unwilling to give part to fix

Lighting control module (lcm) failure exactly as described by others reporting the same problem. The lcm had to be replaced and the second one failed as well and is currently being replaced. This is an expensive part and causes a very dangerous situation as it happens intermittently until it completely fails. It should be noted that the a/c fan operation is also tied to the same relay that fails in the lcm. Ford claims there's been no recall on this failure. My cv is the sport lx and had under 46000 miles when it happened the first time and less than 48000 the second time. Our other cv of the same year is the digital model cv.

I have a 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor that has faulty lcm that causes the headlights to turn off (short out) while driving. This has happened at least 40 times since i bought this automobile in february 2012 and has caused me to pullover in dark dangerous situations. I researched the problem on the internet and the solution pointed to a faulty lcm. I had to bang on the lcm each time to get the lights to turn back on. These lcms have never been recalled even though the problem and solution is all over the internet. I'm afraid someone will have to get hurt or killed in an accident before nhtsa will force a recall. I am asking that this part be recalled immediately. Thank you

Heating and defrost failed. Ford service co wanted a $1000 to look at it. I didn't have them look at it. Now, i only drive it in the summer months. This vehicle has an original 70,000 miles on it and now the headlights only work intermittently. In 2010 i had to have the gas tank replaced. I have read several reports on 2003 crown vic with the same problems. I live in the south, lots of rain and humidity. Defrost is a must as well as headlights. I do not understand why ford is giving the option to as to whether or not they will fix their defects or pass them on to the consumer. I have a 1995 nissan, 140000 miles. The body is falling apart, but the engine runs like a sewing machine and all the electrical works, even the windows. Made in the usa... Sad.

I bought my ford crown vic 3 years ago paid 6000 dollars, within two weeks the windshield wipers stopped working, then the transmission went out cost me 2500, then horn would go off and would not turn off till i pulled the positive battery cable off. Two weeks later the blinkers stopped working, then the lighting control module started making a loud beeping sound, then my headlights and tail lights stopped working. I revived a recall letter from ford and it says take my car to ford dealership and they would fix it free of charge. I went to dealership and they said i had to pay 85 dollars to check and see if the lighting module was bad or not if it was they said they would replace it for free, but there could be additional cost to pay and i would not get my 85 dollars back no matter what. I have a small business of my own, and if i sold something that did not work i would feel bad and would have to fix or replaced it or be sued.what can i do my name is [xxx] my email address is [xxx]and my phone number is [xxx] thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2003 ford crown victoria lighting control module fails without warning and causes headlights to go out.cost to repair seems to be $500. For the module and $200-300 for installation.after researching the internet for a reason, it seems to be a very common problem for this module to fail.

First taka take airbag on jan.1st 2008 i'm hit a deer and i'm had to replace my whole front even the hood the ,airbag light came on in fact it is still on but the bag did not deploy. The lights inside my truck stays on for 30 minutes and the alarm will not set after the vehicle is shut off. My suspension system on the passenger side sounds as if the brake caliber is loose when movingyou can hear it when turning i took off the wheel, and i can not find the problem

I have a 2003 ford crown victoria.i am having issues with the electrical system.i only have 2 speeds on my wipers.either the second intermittent, or full speed.while on full speed, if i turn on the left turn signal, the wipers stop.a while back, my horn would just honk on its own.the worst, which made me take out the fuse, was at 3:30am one night the horn just wouldn't stop.i was asleep in the house.the windows work, sometimes.i can roll down the passenger window with the drivers side button, but have to reach across the car to roll it up with the other door switch.my lights, that are supposed to come on automatically when it's darker outside, seem to be on no matter what time of day it is.i know it is an old car, but for so many things that are wired through the electrical system, it makes me think that part of that is one of your recalls.i tried searching by vin, but it kept telling me to enter a valid vin.i checked it again, wrote it down twice, and tried again.i also noticed that you have a recall on the wheels for this car as well.i have replaced the tires 4 times, and the valve stems twice.for three years now, i have driven on bad, or new tires off and on.i thought the rim was bent, but read that there is a recall on steel rims that crack causing air seeping out.i really would like to have this examined.that, and along with the issues, is why i am installing a complaint to you.down below, when it asks for when it happened, i am not sure.it has been going on so long, i'm not sure when i noticed it exactly.but the horn was close to the date below.everything has happened since then.thank you for your time, and hope for a quick resolution to this complaint.

Onjuly 10 my wife and grand son werereturning to our florida home from an amusement park about an hours ride when the head lights went out on my 03 ford crown vic. She was able to pull over and after 30 minutes trying different ideas the light did come on and she was able to drive home fortunately with the lights staying on, it was a nerve racking experience for them. Since then it has done it on several occasionsduring the day as i run with my lights on during daylight hours. I have since found that it is the lcm unit(light control module) that controls the lights in this 03 crown vic and the 04,05 models. I know that you had an investigation into this recurring problem and closed it when you did not warrant a recall even after many complaints, some of themvery scary on dark back roads. I think you would have to have it happen to you to know what its all about. What will it take a highway death to have this problem look at in a proper manner? i just can believe that this is not a serious recall item. Just try shutting your light off on a narrow back road at 30 mph to just get an idea of what it all about, you will be putting them back on real quick, not something you can do when the lcm fails. Thank you for your time reading my e-mail.

2003 crown victoria, was using vehicle for commercial use during the night hours, when experienced intermittent low beams, closer examination found that the lcm lighting control module, located above brake pedal had heated up to a temperature from high resistance of soldered contact joints not supporting required voltage for low beams when turned on. It is only when the joints cool that the lights would come on only to end in going off when heating back up.for the cost of the lcm at 400 bux used, i was forced to bypass the lcm by installing a toggle and later the high beam function ceased to operate, which then i added a second toggle for the high beam feature.the a/c has to be integrated on the same board as the a/c comp only kicks on approx. 15 min after engine is warm, rather than on demand. This is a definite factory defect as the 03is totally different from the 02, and most likely wasn't adequately tested for the market.this defect needs attention as the danger here is without the lights a collision may occur, and or using a high beam as a substitute may and blind opposing traffic causing a collision.

Lighting control module (lcm) failed, resulting in a loss of headlights.

My headlights don't work until ever now & then the only one that work is the running lights 🤨 i was told that it was a recall on the headlight control module but it wasn't on myvehicle 🤦🏾‍♀️ i just don't understand cause i having problems wit my 3003 like other ppl 🤷🏾‍♀️

I took car into miller ford, provo after receiving recall, they said switch was defective. After 4 months of no communication called and they blamed ford, called and complained to ford, case# [xxx],said would get call dist. Mgr. Within 48 hours no calls. Problem headlights go out while driving. Six weeks ago while driving on dark road lights went out as a child ran across street while traveling 45mph, almost hit child. This is a safety recall that ford is not handling in a time manner given the safety defect. Maybe dot can get these needed repairs ordered in a timely manner, or is a class action lawsuit needed to bring a negligent, uncaring manufacturer to do the right thing. It is sad theydo a dangerous recall then fail to follow through, i guess i cannot buy from another american car manufacturer, have 7 other fords, but planning to sell them. Headlights shut off while driving at night, no way to illuminate the roadway.hour later they came back on.failure continues intermittently for a month now lights do not work at all.major safety issue.had mechanic review and told lcm needed replaced, this part failure also causes the digital climate control to not operate (meaning no defroster, no heat, no a/c), the dome lights, and vanity lights not to work.only way to drive at night is to hold the flash to pass on constantly which again is a hazard with both hands unable to be on the steering wheel.

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria.the contact stated that the light control module failed. The contact was traveling down a mountain road when the light failed. The headlights and the high beam headlights were both inoperable.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was confirmed that the light control module failed and needed to be replaced. In addition, the contact stated that the rear axle bearing would exhibit a very loud noise when driving. The contact stated that there was a manufacturer's recall for both the rear axle and the headlights for the same year, make and model but only for those vehicles that were being utilized as police vehicles only. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 156,000.kmj

2003 ford crown victoria headlamps shut off while driving on interstate at 70 mph was told by ford motor company no recall exists for (lcm)unit {lighting control module} that is defective and headlamps can go off at anytime & will not work in manual or automatic operation positions, this could lead to a serious accident!

2003 crown victoria caught on fire near the fuel injection system.this was a police vehicle.the vehicle was started the turned off so the officer could go back inside the station to retrieve something.a few minutes later a firefighter noticed heavy black smoke coming from underneath the engine compartment.the origin of the fire appeared to be in the area of the alternator and in the area of the fuel injection system.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving, the windshield wipers and the wash was operating on its own.the radio made a crackling noise and the reception came in and out.the dashboard lights intermittently illuminated.also, the contact smelled plastic or rubbing burning however, no smoke was present.there is a nhtsa recall, #05v206000, regarding the electrical system: wiring: interior/under dash.the vin was not included in the recall. I havent recieved a notice to repair my vehicle

A couple of years ago, #2 cylinder blew the spark plug out.this cylinder was repaired using a thread insert.the car had approx 130,000 miles on it.today, no warning, again, blew out another spark plug, this time #3 cylinder.going to attempt repair using same type of insert.plugs have been replaced one time, were properly torqued per ford specs, the problem, in my opinion is a defective design of the cylinder head where there are only approximately 3 threads in the aluminum head that actually grip the plug or about 1/16'th of an inch, where the plug has nearly 3/4 inch of thread.naturally, ford won;t do anyting to help, but there are literally thousands of cases like this, some of which have resulted in fires, and even the aftermarket heads by trick flow address the problem by fully threading the spark plug holes in the heads.

Spark plug blew out of cylinder #6 and ruined coil-on-plug along with it.i had to take it to a mechanic and they used a time-sert kit to rethread the cylinder spark plug wall and replaced all plugs with factory plugs.i replaced the spark plugs myself 6 months before the incident using aftermarket plugs and it ran fine for about 5,000 miles until a plug blew out....updated 09/22/15 updated 10/13/2015

I was on vacation coming home and the car started to pull then let go and the engine light cam on then car locked up on the high way few seconds latter their was thick white smoke coming from the hood of the car and threw the vents inside the car. I turned the hazard lights on and got out of the car on a heavy high way the car smoked for about 20-40 minutes, after it faded i opened the hood to find the ( manifold intake ) broke spraying the coolant all over the engine and electrical under the hood of the car. I see online their has been other complaints and ford fixing them only in the hotter states as i live in ny but was in texas when this happened. Also when this happened i had no place to pull off the road as i was in congested traffic / busy highway - i am lucky i didn't get hit by a car. Ford motor company i know you know of the issue !!!

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. While driving approximately 50 mph, thick white smoke started emitting from the front end of the vehicle. The failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

The engine light came on the dash and the car started to slow and sputter as like it was out of gas , when i had my mechanic look he found the intake to the manifold was shattered ( the plastic part that the hoes grips onto . I was coming home from work it was cold and the car just stops working as the loss of the fluid from the intake sprayed all over the motor, belt, hood, electrical and the motor locked up as i was trying to cost to the pull off as it was a major traffic area .the manifold intake broke !!! in new york "

Threw a spark plug on interstate.had to have it towed to nearest ford dealer and repairs were over $400 plus a rental car to get home.i understand this is a problem with ford engines.not good for older peopl traveling alone and out of town by 3 hours.this needs to be fixed.

2003 ford crown victoria p71upon starting the car, a spark plug was ejected from the engine.necessitated repair of engine.this is the second cylinder to have this occur.

Vehicle has had repeated computer problems, vibration, excessive oil consumption, low gas mileage, check engine light, mirrors, cruise control, surging engine, engine dies, all of these have been repeat complaints.these complaints are over the last 16 months.

I purchased a 2003 crown victoria new. The engine devoloped a pinging noise which was recognized by the dealer. The car is under warranty.i received a call from the dealer stating it was an engine problem and they were on the phone with the ford hotline tech trying to come up with a solution. They felt the engine was running "too lean" but they weren't sure. They needed the advise from ford motor company. An hour later another call was received from the dealer stating ford told them they had many complaints about the pinging problem in crown victorias on the east coast. It has been determined by ford motor company that it is a problem with the gasoline on the east coast and therefore, the problem cannot be fixed. I was told i could try a higher octane gas, allthough this was not recommended by the owners manual. When first discuusing this problem with the dealer, i told him i had this same problem with my previous car, a 1999 ford windstar, and had been told by the previous dealer to use a higher octane gasoline. The response from this dealer is "that won't solve the problem."frustrated, i called ford's customer service. After explaining my problem i was told i had a good question and they would have to put me on hold while they researched the answer. The answer was "as this is caused by contaminated gas, the repair is not covered by the warranty. I'm now completely confused as the dealer wants to fix the problem but can't because ford has determined its the east coast gas. The treatment of the ford customer service was appalling. My way of thinking is if its a gasoline problem, wouldn't all crown vic's ping. In the final anaylsis, the consumer(me) is stuck again. This whole episode to me is soludicrous, that maybe i write a play about the incident but i doubt anyone would buy it.i want to thank you for taking the time to read this complaint. If nothing else i hope it adds a little chuckle to your day.*la

Consumer complained about abrake problem.while driving vehicle accelerated whenever the brakes were applied.*tc

Vehicle has had repeated computer problems, vibration, excessive oil consumption, low gas mileage, check engine light, mirrors, cruise control, surging engine, engine dies, all of these have been repeat complaints.these complaints are over the last 16 months.

2003 ford crown victoria purchased in 1/03 has repeated engine vibrations that are noticed while idling in drive and applying the brake. The indications feel like the engine is missing and gets worse after dirving more than thirty minutes. This vehicle has been to three different dealerships with not resolve. The one honest dealship was friendly ford in crosby texas and they told me that ford engineering was aware of the problem and i would have to put up with the vibration until they found a solution. The engineer told the service manager that they have to lower the idle "the cause" to meet federal emmission control standards. I have just returned from setting in a brand new crown victoria that does not miss like mind does. It seems that ford knew what they were doing and did not care what the consumer had to put up with. I was also told that ford is having alot of engine problems with the crown victoria police interceptor. How can ford sell a car that is below par and mislead consumers. I paid almost thirty thousand dollars for a car that feels like it is running on seven of the eight cylinders. Can you please advise me of where i can go from here. Regards, ted matuszewski

Sudden headlight failure at night on freeway. Repeated intermittent headlight failures. This is a very dangerous and potentially fatal flaw in the lighting control module (lcm). After reviewing similar complaints online it seems that this part is defective and overheats causing failure. It is expensive to repair and ford offers no assistance aside from selling an expensive replacement part which happens to be the same defective part as was originally installed.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 15v861000 (exterior lighting); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer (harrelson ford in charlotte, north carolina) was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer was not aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.

Headlights randomly quit working for extended periods of time.i had a mechanic install a new lcm (lighting control module) and the lightsnow work but it has caused other wiring problems.

All ford vehicles do not have day time driving lights.as a safety group you, know that vehicles with day timedriving lights get in to less accidents. And how many pedestrian are injured or killed each year because they did't see the vechicle. It is the law in canada. What about us here in the usa?

Lighting control module failed....head lights went out in dark on hwy.unable to get lights onsafety hazard.had to use flasher to approach pull off area.still unable to get lights on. Family member came, followed to get car & passengers to safety.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds during night hours, the headlights intermittently failed. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileages were approximately 140,000. The dealer recommended replacing the lighting control module at a cost of$ 500 plus labor. Updated 04/24/13

Ford dealership wont fix saftey issues recalls

My wife tried to turn her headlights on and they would mot go on. All other exterior lights were lit. She tried several times , but they would not come on. She drove home using her high beams, as they were the only ones functioning.she works 125 miles away and brought the car home on the 23rd. Today, the 26th, was the first time i have had to look at them. I tried them and there is neither low beams or high beams now. Only high beams in the "flash to pass" mode, where you pull the turn signal arm back.while researching the problem online, i came across a lot of similar complaints all suggesting the lcm being defective or broken. I also found this comment in place of an actual recall by ford: "4/172014 *****customer satisfaction program 14n01.... Check it out, lighting control module will be replaced or reimbursement made if already had done!!!!*****.i would like to know about this program.we have had a dozen fords since 19984 and there are four in our yard right now. It seems we have been loyal customers a long time and would like a repair done that is not an isolated problem, but a very dangerous one if the light go out while driving.if this is not a recall, it should be.by the way, had the light switch repaired on a 1989 crown vic i owned and the switch was melted because it wasn't heavy duty enough in the wiring. Probably a recall, but didn't know about it. Thank you for your time.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v861000 (exterior lighting) however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Part distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that the headlights were faulty and the turn signals did not work. As a result, the contact could not drive the vehicle at night. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to lb smith ford (1100 market street, lemoyne, pa 17043-1423, 717-761-7600), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the vehicle's age. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

While driving down the road, with my 10 month old son in back, my headlights turned off randomly as i was going around a sharp corner, i slammed my brakes on in order to not go off road, but still ended up with two tires off road. I cannot drive at night, and after doing research found that there is a lighting control module issue, thinking that this is a safety hazard i figured that ford would have a recall on it, went on their site and they said i do not have any recalls listed for my car, and the repair will cost me 300+.

Loss of park lamps while driving/parked not knowing it. When the issue occurs the vehicle looks to have driving running lights type operation when it did not come with that option. My dash stays illuminated. Kicking the lighting control module located under the dash (above right foot) can make the lights come on for a time frame that varies by temp around the unit. Season cold/hot climate does affect how it performs (ac/heat does play a role). I have no tail lights when the problem occurs. I have had the headlight recall performed (similar issue) that states the headlights may go out driving and the lcm would be replaced free of charge. I have paid a diagnostic fee at ramey ford for a verdict of a faulty lcm. I have spoken to ford relations over the phone about the matter and got nowhere and still have to foot the diagnostic fee. To me it sounds like ford knows they fail but will not cover it unless its headlight operation. My vehicle is a safety concern at night to others. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

I was driving home late one night and the lighting module went out leaving us out in the country with no lights. We were just driving down a winding country road. No street lights, no way to see. We managed to get home hours later. On 9/22/15 i had the car looked at by my mechanic and he replace the lighting module fixing the problem. Mechanic said there was a 15 year warranty on this unit and ford new of this problem. He said i should get reimbursed for the part. On contacting ford they will not honor the cost of the unit even though it has not been 15 years because i did not bring it to ford. They also claimed they have sent 2 notices to my address which is not true. I have lived in the same place from before purchasing the car brand new. 2 issues to address is #1, the claimed 15 year warranty not honored they reported to the government and #2, the claim of sending out letters that they do not send. Please help resolve this lighting issue and monitor fords claim to send out letters.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. While driving, the parking lights and headlights illuminated and shut off on several occasions. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 198,000.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria.the contact stated that the headlights dim without warning.the failure has been occurring for approximately one month.the headlamp control module is the cause of the failure.the contact feels that the manufacturer should be responsible for replacing the module due to multiple complaints for this failure.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 160,000.

Driving my vehicle home from work at night got pulled over because i have no tail lights . The lighting control module that was put in from the recall is bad and now ford says its not under warranty and i have to pay for it myself. Why even have a recall or issue a recall and fix something if you're not going to fix it if it's still messed up leaving consumers screwed

Safety recall notice 15s39dated january 2016.according to ford customer service, ford is designing a new part.i seriously doubt this.it's been 6 months!if i experience a problem, i should have ford install a new defective part.

I have had the headlights go out while driving on 3 occasions. If i pulled back on the flash to pass bright light lever, the lights would stay on as long as i held the lever back. Turning the light switch to auto to the left or always on to the right did not turn the lights back on. Stop the car shut it off and turn back on after a minute may start the lights burning again. Headlights in these instances did not stay on very long after starting down the road but stayed on to complete the trip after shut off and restart.

While drive the crown victoria i hear a clicking sound, theheadlights goes off. It does not comes back on i have to hold the switch on bright lights to see in the night when this happens.i have search on line and i notice it is a constant problem that have occurred with other crown victoria drivers.why do we have to pay for having this malfunction fix when it is a factory fault?

Headlights on my 2003 ford crown victoria turned off without warning while driving at night. Main light switch does not have affect. All other lights work correctly. Unable to turn headlights on. They came on after about 10 min. Tapping lcm seems to make the lights to turn on. It appears to be safety hazard.

Random loss of park lamps while driving increasing rear-end collision risk. Headlights are operative and working. Headlight recall was performed by ramey ford. 15s39. I paid labor costs and has been diagnosed by ford as the lighting control module being the problem. Ford will replace the module at no cost only if it affects headlight function. After further contacting ford relations help line, fmc does not seem to care about the matter of the solder joints cracking for park lamps.i have had multiple traffic stops over this matter all verble due to me kicking the lighting control module temporarily correcting the issue. Dash lights illuminate, thinking park lights are working when they are not. I have attached a photo of the problem.

Dash lights and headlights on when driving down road on dark night, then dash lights went out - couldn't see speedometer or gear indicator.then headlights went out, but dash lights came back on.this happened several times while driving the 25 miles home. Tried looking under the hood and making sure all connections were good, they seemed to be. In case something got wet in the rain i waited several days to try again, then tried it today - the same things happened on the street near my home.

Nhtsa recall 16v-861the lighting control module (lcm) has problem. The headlights are not equal.

On april 14th 2017 a recall was issued (recall id = 264137) on 2003-2005 ford crown victoria's manufactured october 3rd, 2001 through august 2nd, 2005. Nhtsa campaign # = 15v861000. The recall was on the affected component, exterior lighting, headlights. I have a ford crown victoria that was manufactured in may of 2002 that has the exact same issue. Yet when i contact ford about the issue they said my vehicle was not included in the recall. Working with a major automobile company previously in honda of america, i tried to understand why yet found no reliable answers. I've been having this issue for multiple years where my headlight will come on and just shut off while driving.

Driving at night and the lights will cut off i have pull the bright lightlever and hold it on so that the lights would stay on other wise i have no lights at all. If i start the car and the lightswitch is on auto only the parking lights will come on. Never had this problem before it just started about a month ago and some days the lights will come on and some days they will not

Takata recalli have recall letter from ford january 2016vhtsa recall 15v-861.ford sent me to dealer in early 2016 and dealer said parts not available.ford sent me to dealer in may 2016 parts not available.called ford in december 2016 said part will be in early 2017.still waiting.

2003 ford crown victoria lighting control module fails without warning and causes headlights to go out.cost to repair seems to be $500. For the module and $200-300 for installation.after researching the internet for a reason, it seems to be a very common problem for this module to fail.

My name is matthew and i own a 2003 ford crown victoria lx sport.in early january i had a minor front end collision with a deer.my insurance provider replaced a headlamp, park lamp and a header (front panel that connects to the grille.in early februaryi was driving after dark and the headlamps shutoff, the park lamps stayed on but the two white headlamps shut off and wouldn't come back on.i played with the switch, high beams and finally turned the car off.upon restarting it the car the automatic lights came back on.in the past 6 months the problem has gone from a once a month occurrence to a permanent problem to the effect that the lights stay on for less then 2 minutes after the car is started.after that i must hold the wand back to turn on the headlamps the duration of my drive.the lights do not come back on at all.consequently it is hard to drive and control such a large car with only one hand and i feel that its unsafe to drive a car with the condition of the headlights.originally i thought this may be a headlight switch and am in the process of replacing it but my mechanic said not to bother because it was a light control module that was causing the problem....$480.00 for a safety part that under no circumstances should have problems.i highly doubt that hitting the deer ruined the module because the problem didn't start until a month after i had my accident and the impact was very light.unfortunately i'm not the only crown victoria owner that has had this problem and that makes me wonder why the ford motor company has not yet issued a recall.

Driving along interstate when headlamps went off. Apparently this is a known issue with several reports both to nhtsa and misc online sources. Other lights work as expected. Headlamps work sometimes and sometimes not. Clearly this is a safety issue that could have a potentially devastating result.

Ford crown victoria 2003 light control module thermal-sensitive failure at night. Headlights failed to switch back on after car was stopped briefly in cold conditions.unable to restore headlights in automatic or manual modes. Had to drive 6 blocks on parking lights only. Second failure required that car be driven at night with momentary-closure high beam switch manually engaged to provide some headlights. That evening headlights started working again after car parked in warm garage. All other running lights ok. Car taken to ford dealer which replaced lcm module for $722.00. Both extended repair warranty carrier and ford customer service refused to refund any portion of the repair. Ford customer service stated that "if this was a problem, there would have been a recall notice, but there wasn't one". This is both a costly burden to the consumer and a safety issue. There is no way to override a sudden lcm failure to restore headlights, as the dashboard headlight switch operates through the lcm in all modes.i find that the nhtsa just closed a case involving 306 ford lcm failures between 2003 and 2005. This problem continues as both a cost burden and safety problem, strongly calling for a reopening of this case in behalf of the consumer.

A couple of years ago while on vacation 200 miles from home with my family the headlightssuddenly went out.after a little inspection i found we still had flash to pass high beams. The next day (july 3rd) i went to the local dealer and the parts houses and no one had a replacement. As a former usaf jet engine mechanic i went back to the camper and found a wiring diagram. I figured out it was a problem with the lighting control module. I took it apart and replaced the defective relay. We finished our vacation and i soon forgot the issue. I received a recall notice for the module and took it to the dealership for replacement. I was informed by the service manager that since i had repaired the part ford would not take it back so they could not help me. I had the sneaking feeling i was being lied to. I went home and researched the recall. I found the repair does not even involve replacing the part but taps into the wiring before the module. I called ford corp and was told they did not understand what i was talking about as they weren't a technician but they stood by their dealers decision. I don't feel that i should be punished for doing what it took to get my family home safely. I hope you can help me withthis problem

The headlights in my 2003 ford crown victoria randomly turn off and back on without warning. They can stay off for hours at a time. Sometimes they are off, sometimes they are on and using the headlight switch does nothing to correct issue. I took the vehicle to a ford dealership and was told it is the lighting control modular which is going to be $700 just for the part. Also, i purchased an additional warranty on the vehicle which is valid for another 7 months and the warranty company is trying to deny the claim.i cannot find a recall from ford for this defect. The vehicle has approximately 70,000 miles. I have seen numerous postings for the same issue. The consumer should not have to pay for this defective part since clearly it is a widespread issue and is a safety hazard when driving at night.

Headlamps turned off while driving at night. They stayed off for about 60 seconds then came back on. This happened about 5 times in 20 mile trip.

2003 crown victoria lsx, 41,541 miles, well maintained. Headlights turned on during night driving will shut off on their own without notice while vehicle is traveling along the roadway. No warning. Just darkness where there was light. A very dangerous situation that forces a pull off to the side of the roadway with or without a shoulder for emergency stopping. The headlights return to their on position without doing anything manually to the switches or ignition. Time frame for this automated off and on operation varies.no set pattern observed for this occurrence. Mechanic relates that the light control module, (lcm) will need replacement. For a component inside the passenger compartment that is not exposed to the elements, on a vehicle with under 42,000 miles, this is an unacceptable out of warranty cost to be born by myself and others for a safety issue that seems to be caused by a computer board relay that is defective. The replacement part is several hundred dollars. I could see the headlamps themselves burning out, or a fuse, but not a component that is needed to make them light up in the first place.as of this time, i understand that your department has not issued a recall for this defective item that is central for the safe operation of this vehicle during the hours after dusk and before dawn. Seems that the problem was built into the vehicle by running the headlamp controller through a defective circuit board that is part of a overly expensive total part called the lcm. Night driving requires illumination properly controlled by the driver and vehicle systems. Not rocket science, just lights on and lights off when switched.control by the night illumination system to toggle the lights on and off when the switch is in an on position is a defect that must be addressed. Until it is, the replacement part needed is also defective.the original factory part is still installed and may be inspected. Air and oil filters have been replaced.

Takata recall. The head light do not work. I cannot use my car at night time for almost 2 years. It happened in 2012 and i fixed it that time, unfortunately, in summer 2015 the same problem came back again.

While driving after dark the headlights turned themselves off. The dash switch was set on auto so i changed it manual but no effect. I drove with the headlight flash switch pulled in order to get home. The lights will cycle back on and then off again without any input from me. When the lights are off it doesn't matter what position the dash switch is set on. This is a definite safety item and should be a recall by ford motor company. For me to have a shop fix this item will cost around $500.00. I feel this should be covered by ford.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speeds, both of the headlights failed without warning. The failure would occur intermittently, the lights would occasionally illuminate but would fail again within a few minutes. The lighting control module was replaced once and at a later date it failed again.the manufacturer stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle and would not provide any assistance. Search of the internet indicated that this problem has been reported numerous times in the model year that the contact drives in addition to other model years. The failure mileage was approx. 210,655.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact took the vehicle to ford of dalton (located at 925 shugart rd, dalton, ga 30720, (706) 278-1151) to be repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 15v861000 (exterior lighting). The contact stated that the lighting control module was inoperable prior to the vehicle being repaired. After the replacement of the lighting control module, the failure remained. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. The vin was not available.

While traveling down the intestate at night at approximately 65 mph my headlights went out.i did not have an accident as a result of this failure.the light control module was defective.i replaced the light control module.ford refused to reimburse me for the repair because a ford dealer did not do the repair.i saved over $300.00 by doing the repair myself.the replaced module had to be replaced again in jan 2016.

After dark, while driving on a divided state highway, the headlights unexplainable turned off, but returned after a couple of minutes of turning the headlight switch on and off, and activating the high beams.over the following month, they would sometimes fail to come on when i turned on the switch, but would come on after a few minutes of switch jiggling, high-beam indicator clicking and road vibration. (high beams would, however, activate if i held the lever back as if to flash them.)they also continued to fail while driving.unable to find a recall, and no knowledge that this was a common problem, i was going to replace the headlight switch.however, after research, i became aware that this is a common problem.the cause is a failed headlight relay in the light control module ("lcm") under the dashboard, which is not a dealer serviceable part. Dealer repair of this common problem (see the other complaints to nhtsa) consists of replacement of the entire lcm plus labor costs.i repaired the problem by removing the lcm and replacing the relay (approximately $6 for the part) on the printed circuit board.problem is now solved - for me. These headlight relays appear to be lacking in durability, not designed for extended operation.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. While driving unknown speeds, the headlights stopped working periodically. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (brinson ford lincoln located at 2970 state highway 31 e athens, tx 75752 903-676-5200) where it was diagnosed that the lighting control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The dealer stated that the manufacturer needed to authorize the repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000. Updated 08/24/17*ljthe consumer stated a local mechanic determined the dealer installed the headlights incorrectly. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer was notified, but did not offer any assistance.

My headlights dim in and out while driving and my wheel studs have popped off twice.

Nhtsa recall 15v861000 still not acted on.ford motor company said in january 2016 they'd notify me when part available so i could set an appointment with the dealer.no such letter has come to date.

Was driving on highway going about 65 when the lights headlights turned off. Took yto electrical mechanic said it was a bad headlight module . Was told ford had a recall on this.

Lost both headlights withfor turning them on, no other way to turn them try all means. Would stay off for 3 to 5 to never return.

I bought the car a few months back. The headlights worked just fine at first, then started either not turning on or would shut off while going down the road. They will not turn back on by flipping the lights on there is nothing you can do. Only thing you can do it wait a few hours and hope they turn back on.

Thank you

Lighting control module failed, causing loss of headlights.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the headlights suddenly stopped illuminated. The failure occurred intermittently.

This was the second time my lights went out and wouldn't come back on. I had to drive home from the er after my dad was admitted holding my high beams on. Very dangerous. Then they went out again this morning on the way to work i leave at 230 am and again i held my high beams on to drive to work. I called ford they noted my complaint. Yea no help!!!!!

I recently began having headlight and parklight/ taillight trouble when my headlights started to shut off while i was driving. I own a 2003 ford crown victoria i still had my dash lights and tail lights working. Apparently it is some sort of design flaw in the lcm and it only applies to the low beams and constant on high beam function. The flash to pass function will still work though when it was malfunctioning. It seems to be on the lcm or lighting control module. Or the bcm.

I havent recieved a notice to repair my vehicle

Hello i was informed that my vehicle the 03 crown victoria had a recall on the lighting control module which has not been replace in my car but ford is unwilling to give part to fix

Headlights failed for the second time on this vehicle!!! ran off road in pitch dark.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the headlights failed and would not re-illuminate. The contact had to leave the vehicle sitting overnight and the following day, the lights still would not illuminate. The vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileages were approximately 95,343.updated 11/29/12*ljthe consumer stated two later, the lights came back on.the lights worked fine until november 7, 2012. He stated he had to pull and hold the passenger high beam flash arm in order to drive home. The lights came back on the next the day, when the vehicle was started. Updated 11/29/12

Headlights will not turn on and sometimes cut off while driving and want cut back on

I own a 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor, over the last several months the headlights will shut off randomly. From researching online it seems this is a very widespread/well known problem. Why hasn't there been a recall on the defective part?

Last tuesday, i drove from san jose back to orange county at 9:00pm and when i drove on 152 east freeway around 9:30pm-10pm suddenly my headlight turn off at the curve that make me almost fall down the hill. I'm really scare and my wife had been crying because there is no street light and i turn my car follow the reflect things on the road to keep my car on driving right then brake and pull over on the side of the hill. After that happened i do some research and find out so many ford crown victoria have this defect i wonder why the ford company look the people life is cheap like that, they support to know this issue and have to recall to fix this problem. There is some one, some law protect us by that, please advise me what should i do with that. There is no problem to fix this issue but the things is very expensive and the ford have no right to this to me and my family. My car is 2003 ford crown victoria lx, my suggestion is whoever own the crown victoria should sign the law suit to sue them if not one day you, your wife and your kids will fall out of the mountain then it's too late.

My 2003 ford crown victoria's head lights do not work.every person i have spoken to with similar cars have had headlight failure.the problem is a lcm computer that controls the lights and is $500.

Headlights shut off without warning and then back on then off. Headlights seem to go off when ever they want. This happened early in the morning when it was still dark outside. This could be a serious safety problem. I had to pull over until it was light outside so i could see the road and others could see me.

Driving from walmart and my headlights went out when i turned my left directional now after 10 mins of having headlights on they turn off on their own. I had this car for almost 1 year.

Severe safety issue with no recall . .i drive a 2003 ford crown victoria. As you can see it's 13 years old. About 6 months ago driving at night my headlights went out. I pulled over and juggled the light switch on & off. They came back on. In the following months it occurred more and more often. Playing with the switch did nothing.one night on i-295 it happened again. On an interstate, with an exit 7 miles away. A sitting target to be hit and killed. Slowly got home. Next day took it to repair my shop. A computer that controls all lights was defective.so i asked him to repair it. "no need" just take it to your ford dealer. They had issued a warranty for this computer for 15 years. Remember the car is 13 years old. Replaced. No cost. So even though it was a major safety problem, they said no need for recall with the 15 year warranty.. That means they had a safety problem..how many people died? how many paid for a costly repair?the auto company wins again. No recall issued. Millions $ saved.lets hear it for honest repair shops ![xxx][xxx]jacksonville fl. 32246[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that the low beam headlights failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the light module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was to be taken to a dealer for a second opinion. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speeds, both of the headlights failed without warning. The failure would occur intermittently. When driving over a pothole or bumpy road surface, the lights would occasionally illuminate but would fail again within a few minutes. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the turn signal switch was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The lighting control module was replaced at a later date and the contact did not experience the failure after the switch was replaced. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle and would not provide any assistance. The current mileage was approximately 185,000 and the failure mileage was 179,000.

The headlight relay on the lighting control module (lcm) part number nec-eq1-11111s overheats and fails suddenly, shutting off headlights which could lead to a crash.this is an apparent problem on 2003 ford crown victoria passenger and police interceptor models.this happened to me. Researching on internet, apparently it is a common failure that gearheads are advised to "modify" their 2003 as soon as they get it by replacing this relay on the lcm (if they know how to solder.) apparently, it is a 10a relay, with 8+amps going through it and it overheats and fries the relay.don't know if this overheating condition enough to cause further damage or fire.it is apparently an $600-$800 fix at the dealer if you aren't' a gearhead to replace the whole lcm (although if apparently replaced with the same relay - same problem will develop).the fact that the headlights both go out suddenly is dangerous.to drive i had to pull back on the bright lights handle on the steering column to see, and this resulted in a ticket from police, but it was this or nothing to get home.car now in driveway.replaced the switch in steering column first, but this didn't solve problem.found out i have to learn to figure out how to solder or shell out big $$$ to fix.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria.the cruise control would not work.on several occasions, after driving 14 miles, the key would become very hot which was noticed when it was removed from the ignition.the electrical windows would not go up or down properly as they should and activate either very slowly or very quickly.the front driver's seat would not go back and forth as it should and either moves very slowly or not at all.this is the second time that the contact has experienced electrical failure with the windows and the seat.she also stated that the head light switch works intermittently and must be held in order for it to activate.the current mileage was 38,000 and the failure mileage was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated while driving at speeds of 45 mph, the headlights failed and reset themselves within seconds. The failure would occur intermittently. The dealer advised replacing the relay control module. The manufacturer advised that there were no recalls for the failure and any repairs would be at the expense of the contact. The vehicle was left with the dealer where he was awaiting repairs. The failure and current mileages were 105,000.updated 11/12/10 the consumer stated the headlights would fail at times. The consumer stated he took the lighting control module apart and found the relays that controlled the headlights melted the solder on the circuit board creating an intermittent connection. The consumer stated he compared the relay with another relay and found his relay to be significantly smaller. Updated 11/24/10

While driving car homeat night the headlights quit.lights came back on after car was stopped for 10 minutes. Car was driven again a couple of times and headlights failed again. Lights come back on after 5-10 minutes. No longer drive car at night due to concern for safety.

Sad.

The consumer was concerned about the safety of the 2003 crown victoria's gas tank. *ph*nlm

Fuel tank placement, and likely danger of an explosion in a rear end collision.

Dt*: the contact stated no failure has been experienced with the vehicle's fuel tank.however, there is concern for safety due to the manufacturer recently offering a protective shield.the shield was offered to vehicle's that were at a higher risk of fire based on their use.the contact is concerned about the shield not being offered as a standard on all vehicles regardless of their intended use. The consumer stated his vehicle has been rear ended twice. Updated 02/27/06.

How can you folks justify the policy which has been reported concerning the fire hazard on the ford crown vic, mercury marquis, and lincoln town car because of the location of and lack of protection of the gas tank.why is that not a recallable defect?we bought a 2003 crown vic not knowing about the gas tank location problem.who is responsible for informing the public of such death causing hazards?if not your agency, who?so what are we to do now?why should we have to pay $150 to get a factory defect fixed?not only are you doing nothing about it, you are negligent in withholding this information from consumers.it is further reported a representative of your agency stated that you were going to do nothing;it was a consumer vs. Manufacturer issue.what power does a consumer have to make a large corporation like ford motor company fix a defect like they voluntary did on all police cruisers.i believe that was an economic decision of ford, not necessarily a safety concern.if not why would they not be just as concerned about their loyal customers.i have owned crown vics for the past 15 years, not know about the gas tank hazard.how many more people (maybe my wife and i) will have to die from exploding gas tanks before you take the action you are entrusted to?as a commentator said the other day, it is such a sad state that people have to die before our government works.how sad.if you had purchased one of these automobiles not knowing about this death trap, would you feel differently about a recall?ford obviously is not going to do the right thing.will you?i request the courtesy of a reply, please!(the incident date is the date i purchased my 2003 ford crown vic.

I just purchased this vehicle and noticed while pumping fuel, it was leaking from a tube located under the driver side rear wheel. Fuel leaks out everytime i refuel. This is a fire hazard and hope the manufacturer can fix this problem since it seems to be a problem on other same year crown vic's.

While in motion, car began making a grinding noise from rear.what i though might be a bad tire or failed brake turned out to be a leaking rear axle seal , damaged axle shafts and bearings.this is the exact recall under 04s16 which applies toward 2003 fleet cv's.ford continually disappoints as i was told that my car vin is not included.i had a similar incident with my lcm (lighting control module)-- had to pay repair and save receipts for 2 years until ford fessed up and expanded recall and finally got a refund.as of this incident, the car is a passenger family vehicle in great shape/care with approximately 110,000 miles on it.4.6 v8 engine.i expect a full refund for this repair which is effecting others and could have killed me and my family.i called 1(800)392-3673 ford customer relations and was told to tuck my receipt in wallet and wait to see if a recall is ever issued.they do in fact acknowledge exact issue with p70, p71, p72--- just not my p74. Ford, do right by your people!no wonder why many go to foreign cars.let's hope nhtsa and ford can restore american hope. ---not to mention our lives on the road.

2003 crown victoria 57000 miles. My crown victoria was manufactured at the st thomas assembly plant during time frame in question in regards to recall number 04s16. At 57000 miles it developed a noticeable noise and vibration emanating from the rear differential. Upon inspection the axles were shown to be worn severely. Ford has recalled "only police and fleet" crown victoria due to there "severe" use and has deemed all other models built on the same assembly line, with the same defective parts unworthy of attention. This is a blatant disregard for consumer safety, the the general public. The parts are known, and have shown to be defective if place under heavy load. This recall should be extended to all crown victoria models, not just p70,p71,p72 as they all use the same exact axle shaft.

For over a year i heard a rumbling from the rear right of my car which a mechanic originally thought was a tire noise.on 3/2/10 the dealer reported hearing a bearing noise and on 3/11/10 "replaced right rear wheel brg and seal also replaced axel was damaged fill rear diff ..."i have the axle and bearings that were replaced in case you want to inspect them.at repair the car had 44884 miles on it.it cost me $694.57 to repair.the car was assembled at st. Thomas and is not a police or fleet car.unfixed, the loss of drive function could have resulted in a crash.how many other units of this model have been involved in a crash or are a disaster waiting to happen?

Dealer, who i had bought the car from and who had been servicing it, said bearing noise in r/r (mileage 44850).repaired it for $694.57 dollars.police and fleet crownvicswere manufactured at the same time in the same plant in canada and were recalled for wheel bearing and axle problems via ford recall number 04s16.dealer said recall only applied to fleet vehicles so i had to pay for the work.ford customer relations simply sent me back to the dealer.is there any possibility the l/r bearing/axle may fail?shouldn't the dealer/ford consider this vehicle as part of the original recall?you have a number of complaints similar to mine on your website under different headings such as axle assembly, suspension rear, power train, axle shaft for the same model, year of manufacture, place of manufacture and low mileage.just what role does your organization have in these situations?i had tried to get satisfaction in this matter much earlier but with the recent interest in safety recalls i thought i'd try again.thank you for your consideration of my concerns.

2003 ford p71 interceptor: right rear wheel bearing and axel shaft problem. Rumble reported to ford. They said it was fixed on recall when owned by san antonio police dept. Before i bought it. My mechanic found a broken bearing and worn axel shaft. Both on recall. Car only has 68,000 miles. Ford says they fixed it once so too bad. I said you did not fix it right and put bad parts in again because it failed in 30k miles. They said too bad. Replacing a defective part with a defective part is '!@#$%. Please get these '!@#$%.

Noise in rear of car. When i looked at right rear wheel i saw oil. I then took it to the closes auto repair shop in midland texas which was allen s auto repair. They tore the rear end down and found that both rear axles were worn considerably they also told me there was plenty of oil still in the rear end. They also showed me a bulletin that ford motor co. Put out on this problem, so apparently they have had problems in the past. When i got home in bander texasafter getting the repairs that cost me $677.00 two different people told me that they ha d the same problem one even lost a wheel. The car had less than 70,000 miles when this happened. I had just delivered 5 grand children to the air port. This could have locked up or ran a wheel off. The axles were worn down quite a bit.

I have a 2003 ford crown victoria with a 4.6l v8 and automatic transmission.in the last 44,000 miles i have had two rear axle failures that necessitated the replacement of the axle shafts, seals etc.the first failure was at 57,902 mi and was covered under warranty.the second at 102,753mi - 44,851 miles.i have found that ford does have a recall on these vehicles but will not cover my vehicle as it is not a taxi/police/fleet vehicle.i am nearly 60, drive mostly freeway and country roads, do not race anyone, do not tow anything and work to get the best gas mileage i can from my car.i drive it gently.i have had the rear axle serviced per the schedule and it was only about 3,000 miles after my last axle service that this new failure occurred.i saw fluid all over the wheel well and upon removing the tire saw fluid coming out of the hub area.thinking it was an emergency brake failure took it to a certified shop and found out it was the axle seals going and the axle shaft deteriorating.this was a $458.31 repair that i feel should not have been necessary.my axle has failed at 57kmi and 44kmn later.i have read on the web of numerous individuals who have had rear axles go and that some of these caused accidents.i was lucky both times because i have been working on cars for over 40 years as a hobby and watch my cars carefully.i feel fords position of using only vin numbers, rather that incidents, is a danger to the general public and an obvious safety issue.

My 2003 ford crown victoria, developed a grinding noise in the rear end on 8/05/04. Took it to have it checked on 8/12/04 and found out that the rear axle bearings were bad and that they had cut into the axle shaft. I had to have the axle shafts, bearings and seals replaced at a cost of $513.45. I searched the internet and found out that there had been a recall on the 2003 ford crown victoria "fleet" vehicles (recall #04s16) for the same problem. I called ford on 8/13/04 and found out that it only applied to vehicles assembled at the st. Thomas facility between 12/01 and 12/02. They also verified by my vin# [xxx], that my car was assembled in the st. Thomas facility in 7/02. I was informed that my car is not involved in this recall. I also found that ford had issued a technical service bulletin (tsb) advising dealers to be on the lookout for service complaints centering around rear axle noise in the 2003 crown victorias, and two other models manufactured prior to 01/01/03and included all chassis configurations (not only fleet vehicles) except heavy-duty limousine and hearse chassis. According to fords recall information, "early bearing failure and ultimately axle shaft fracture would lead to loss of drive function and could lead to a crash". I also found that it could lead to a wheel-off failure and a resulting crash. I also find that ford issued a "silent recall" or "secret warranty" to deal with customer problems prior to the end of the factory warranty (dealer operation code 030505a). My car had approx 21000 miles on it when i bought it and now has approx 69000 miles on it. In my opinion, ford is aware of this problem and has decided to be selective in which vehicles they are recalling without regard for the average person. I believe this is a safety issue and not something that should overlook the many people that ferry their families around on a daily basis in a car that is not deemed a "fleet" car but that apparently still has a problem. Premature bearing and axle wear. If not repaired axle may break. This was found on 7 of 8 cars checked. Cars built 02-04-03. Mileage 29278 to 40559.

At 40000 miles a 2003 ford crown victoria developed a loud noise. The local mechanic determined the axle's were soft and were worn downin spite of one of the bearings being well lubricated and in good condition. This is a police package cruiser. This defect could effect thousands of police departments and cost lives.*la

Went to midland texas from bandera tx. Which was around 300 mi. Was having noise in left rear wheel upon inspection saw oil on wheel. It was on week end i had a reputable auto shop check it out and found both rear axles were worn real bad. Their was plenty of oil in differential. They had abulletin making them aware of the problem so ford knew their is a problem. Since i have had two more people in bandera tx. That had the same problem one had a wheel come off.

2003 ford crown victoria-- the head rests in these automobiles are so high that it is impossible to see over or around them. The only way to have vision to the rear of the car is by raising the head rest up on its post, above the position that would allow it to be of use in an accident.. The 2003 is larger than the 2000 and i don't understand. The present size is definitely a safety problem that needs correction.

Driving steadily at around 30 mph on a city street. Suddenly the steering starting binding making it difficult to turn. Upon examination there was a lot of rust on the lower intermediate steering shaft and needed an immediate replacement. The mechanic noted severe corrosion and noted it could have fully broken without a lot of warning. Some research revealed that a recall was done for model years 2005-11 (13v385000). You may want to extend this to 2003-2004 which use the same steering components.

Steering the vehicle became hard when making turns, as if the power steering was not operating.after making turns, the wheels did not straighten by themselves, and turning them back had to be done manually, as if no power steering was installed on the vehicle and it was standing still.i see that the recent recall is only for 2005-2001 crown victorias (and similar panther platform vehicles), but this failure also occurred my 2003.a view under the hood showed that the steering column universal joints, located in 2 places on the shaft, were rusted and dry. After first applying silicone spray to loosen them up (which relieved the appearance of power steering failure), i applied very generous amounts of lithium grease to both joint locations.the problem has been corrected, but possibly only temporarily if the shaft actually needs to be replaced like on the 2005-2011 vehicles.i report this to show that the problem may be larger than only within the selected range of vehicles.

My vehicle's lower steering shaft became so corroded to the point i was unable to steer the vehicle safely. I did some research online and found that ford actually recalled 2005-2011 crown victoria (nhtsa campaign number: 13v385000) for that same exact problem. I am reside in one the affected states under the recall however ford refuses to honor the recall stating that my vehicle vin is not affected and my vehicle is a 2003. I don't think it's a coincidence my vehicle just happens to have the same problem. I would like to include and excerpt from the recall "the recall is expected to begin october 21, 2013. Ford's recall number is 13s08. Customers located in non-corrosion states who have concerns regarding their steering will have a one-time option to have their vehicles inspected and, if necessary, repaired." i repaired my vehicle out of pocket at my expense, however ford refuses to reimburse me.

The trunk lid of the 2003 ford crown victoria has a chromed metal strip of trim running across the outer bottom width of the trunk lid.this metal strip has an exposed sharp edge in a place where a user would instinctively reach to lift or hold up the trunk lid (on a windy day).

Problem:the rear sway-bar and sway-bar housing are damaged. Apparently, the initial problem occurred in the sway-bar housing, causing excess stress on the sway-bar, causing the failure. The local dealer told me ford is apparently re-manufacturing the parts because of "problems" with this model. The dealer was unsure if ford was going to initiate a recall on this model. The vehicle is owned by the knox county sheriff's department, but it is assigned to me for permanent use. The vehicle is still under warranty and is (still) awaiting service at lance cunninham ford in knoxville, tn. My concern is that this demonstrates yet another serious and potentially life-endangering defect with the crown victoria. If i had been operating the vehicle at interstate speeds (or above, as is sometimes required in law enforcement work), i feel that (at least) serious bodily injury would have resulted from a crash. I am hopeful that ford will recognize the defect and take appropriate measures to save lives.

Car had been running rough for a couple of days i assumed was poor gas quality when the car got loud and ran rough i pulled over opened hood and found that a spark plug blew right out of engine breaking the coil on plug and stripping the threads in the head.

While driving at any speed front seat moved back and forth. Also, speedometer failed.dealership urged consumer to call and file a complaint.

I saw similar reports of this failure and decided to add to the # of complaints, as i experienced this, too. Upon acceleration up a hill, air flow through vents (a/c or heat) would stop and go to defrost, then return after car began "cruising" again.over time, air flow defaulted to always being defrost. (i had heard that this default position upon failure was a safety mandate.)without a recall, the cost was fully mine, so i considered alternatives. A dealer service for this problem (replace the dashboard's electronic automatic temperature control unit or "eatc") would have been megabucks (i heard $800 for the unit, itself) for parts and labor. A rebuilt eatc by mail order (rebuild mine or swap for mine) would have been $250-400 for the part alone. The problem is failed original o-rings on the vacuum actuators within the eatc; not a dealer-offered repair. I repaired it myself. I ordered 5/52" idx 9/32" od silicone o-rings (4 needed, 1 for each actuator) and replaced them on the nozzle of each vacuum actuator, reassembled and remounted the actuators, reconnected the vacuum hoses and reinstalled the eatc unit into the dashboard. After more than 3 years, the eatc now continues to operate properly.cost of parts (o-rings, silicone spray and dielectric grease) was about $30 and 1 1/2 hours of my time.it appears to be an extremely common problem with a simple, albeit very expensive, correction, if done by the dealer.

2003 ford crown victoria police was parked. Driver put foot on brake, put car in reverse. Car suddenly accelerated at high speed.

Dt:2003 ford crown victoria.the consumer states on august 29, 2005 the vehicle was going 25 mph when it took off.the consumer'sfoot was not on the accelerator pedal.he tried to depress the brake, but they would not work.he put the vehicle in neutral and turned the vehicle off to get it to stop.the consumer stated the air conditioner made the vehicle go faster, and he thought this was the causeof the problem.the dealership could notfind anything wrong with the vehicle.the consumer stated this has happened once before.

1993 ford crown victoria with speed control recall. Consumer states that he received a letter in february saying parts were available. When he called the dealer they had not heard that parts were available.

While engaging in reverse the vehicle accelerated at 90 mph.the tires were screeching and smoking.as a result, the vehicle collided into three other vehicle and a pedestrian.a child was injured.(pinned between the vehicle and his father's vehicle)the consumer stepped on the accelerator to back out of the parking space, but the vehicle did not move.the consumer then stepped on the brake and gently on the accelerator again, and the vehicle raced away backwards at a extremely fast speed.the consumer stepped on the brakes with all her strength, but the vehicle would not stop. *sc

Problems with vehicle's cruise control.*mr while driving uphill the vehicles cruise control failed and the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration.the consumer had to apply the brake and switch off the engine to get the vehicle to stop.the failure was the result of a cable assembly between the cruise control box and carburetor which came loose, jamming the cable on the pulley.*ph *nlm

Cruise control failed at almost full throttle while going uphill from lee vinning ca to mammoth lakes ca, on us 395, from about 4,000 ft to 8,000 ft elevation. Vehicle was a budget rental car, contract 133247, from long beach, ca, (lgb) airport location, 2003 ford crown victoria, din [xxx], ca license [xxx], less than 9,000 miles.brake & cruise control off switch did not remedy throttle position.stopped car by applying brake & switching off engine on side of road.did not attempt to switch engine off at high speed as it may, or may not, have locked steering wheel.fixed problem as a "cable assembly" between "cruise control box" & carburetor had particularly come loose, jamming cable on pulley.there seem to be a defect in the fastener for the part reattached allowing recurrence.budget @ 800 858 5377 would not record problem but told me to report to lgb budget at turned in.spoke to service personnel at nearest ford dealer, eastern sierra motors, bishop, ca who said there were other rare instances of this happening & that it was an item covered by warranty (phone 877 503 6257).reported this to budget agent at lgb who was flippant & rude.he did not seem to care nor did i get the feeling that the item would be fixed.time of report 0620 hrs/6 july 03 (budget was 20 minutes late opening).agent reported his name as jock rocket (suspect this is not correct).i request that budget be contacted to have the car fixed so it will recur with a less experience driver who may be killed or injured.also, ford should be contacted to fix this defect.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Lighting control module (lcm) failed, resulting in a loss of headlights.

I purchased this vehicle 11/2015 from a local town.the wipers have started to work or not work occasionally.the last time they stopped i drove directly to the local dealer, crowley ford in plainville ct. They took it in to access the problem and when they tried them they worked and diagnostics were impossible. I picked up the car and the wipers worked.i drove home 10 miles and tried them again in my driveway, they do not work.my concern is if they work when i get in the car and they stop at highway speed will i hit anything prior to stopping at the side or the road.does the wiper recall # 05v206000 apply to this vehicle and if not why not ? i feel ford did not give the dealer good information which cost me a diagnostic fee and did not uncover the problem.how do i get this fixed under the recall # 05v206000 and get reimbursed for the fee for ford's lack of communicating this problem with their dealer?

Sad.

I have a 2003 ford crown victoria that has started turning on the windshield wipers and the lights. This only happens when the car has reached operating temps. I have also noted dash lights and other automatic features self activating. Again this only when the car is hot (not when first started).the dealers have been no help as to the cause of the problem (i think it maybe related to the overheating problem ford is having in police cars and taxi cabs, but will not admit it).

Have been driving the car back and forth to work under normal conditions.then realized the car had a flat, then took to the local tire shop.where they informed me the tire was fine, but the wheel had split at the connection weld(making it no good).found out ford had a recall, i went to my local ford dealer where they explained it was a defect and would be replaced if it was a current police vehicle. Where it is not cause i own it, they said they can not perform the recall. Now tell me how am i not anymore important than our police officials? my family is at safety risk, along with myself, and others on the road, because the wheel could split and cause and accident! so tell me why wont ford stand behind there recalled product?

Steel wheel cracked on vehicle.*mrthere was a separation of the weld between the disk and hub.a gap of 1/16th of an inch extended approximately 18" around the hub weld.the wheel was previously inspected at the dealer for possible involvement in safety campaign 03s05 and per the dealer the wheel was not covered in the recall.the wheel failed in the same manner as described in safety recall 03s05.see also 10083876, same incident.*dsy

My headlights dim in and out while driving and my wheel studs have popped off twice.

Steel wheel cracked around the circumference of the wheel.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria.the contact discovered a cracked rim in the back of his trunk.the dealer initially stated that his vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v079000 (wheels).four rims were ordered and, when they arrived, the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included because it was not an active police vehicle.the current mileage was 129,600 and failure mileage was 129,580.updated 11-25-08 updated 11/25/08.

2003 ford crown victoria wheels fail at the weld, we have at least 20 failures where the weld cracks and the tire deflates.this is a very serious safety issue that should be addressed.we are afraid that we will have a grave accident if this is not corrected.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that the front driver side wheel split where the rim connected to the center of the wheel. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 03v279000 (wheels), but the manufacturer informed him that the recall only applied to the models that were being used as police vehicles. The contact stated that the information was not indicated in the recall notice. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 180,000.

These particular wheels on the crown victoria police interceptor were known to crack, and leak air, causing an accident. They were recalled by ford, but the police department that purchased this vehicle, yavapai-apache police in camp verde, az, never had them replaced. I am constantly adding air to my tires. Luckily i haven't had a blowout. I would settle for a used set of stock wheels(12 hole type) to replace the current 8 hole type, since i still have the original hubcaps on the vehicle

Dealership hasn't been able to perform the steel wheel recall 03v279000 repairs for almost 10 months because the parts were on back order.

Consumer received recall notice pertaining to his rims, but had difficulty getting the recall work performed.*phone of the vehicle's rims were leaking.the consumer contacted the dealer about the recall but was told that the parts were not available.several months later the consumer called about the rims and was given an appointment.when the consumer arrived at the dealer they claimed that there was no recall on the vehicle.the dealer also stated that if the consumer wanted the rims replaced her would have to pay for it.(recall number 03v279000).

The suffolk county police department encountered a problem concerning wheel rims on the 2003 ford crown victoria which were outside ford safety recall #03s05. While inspecting rims detailed in this recall, this department found cracks in rims which had not been listed in the recall campaign as being potentially defective. It is suggested that agencies utilizing crown victorias equipped with wheel rims having 7 vent holes consider expanding the inspection of said rims. Rims that have repetitive slow leaks cound be indicative of a rim or weld crack and should be removed from the vehicle for a proper inspection of the welds.

My concern is for the 2003 ford police crown victoria (police interceptor) program 03m03 which is concurrent with safety recall 03s05. They both involve inspection and replacement of cracked rims. However, the 03m03 does not address the problem. It only extends the warranty. Both concurrent campaigns describe the same symptoms (repeated slow air leak, nibble in steering, difficulty in balancing tires and rapid air lost). However, after contacting my local ford dealer and ford motor company, i was told the rims would not be inspected at my request. I would have to pay for this with city of richmond funds. Ford states "that only a small percentage of steel wheels manufactured from september 23, 2002 through april 22, 2003 will be affected by this condition" . I feel a failure that could occur during a high speed pursuit is not acceptable. Ford also says in the 03s05 safety recall that rapid air loss may affect vehicle control , possibly resulting in an accident.....personal injury or possible death. Please advise me concerningthe action to take with these rims. We (city of richmond), are not an isolated case.mark schultzfleet maintenance training & quality assurancecity of richmond, virginia .

Dealership didn't have the replacement wheels for the steel wheelsrecall 03 v 279 000. Recall defects had already occurred on one of the wheels.

Vehicle's rims are cracked, a recall was issued; however vehicle is outside the remedy scope. Please provide additional information.

2003 crown vic police interc. Police car had its tire rim replaced by ford 9/2003, new rim dated 8/1/2003 was found to have a 12 inch crack on the circumference of the rim which caused the tire to deflate. Numbers on the rim were 16x7 j t dot k4 34 080103.

The consumer noticed a hard vibration coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was serviced by a technician, who stated the rim well was cracked.ph

The rims cracked without warning.*nlm

A police officerstatedwhile driving at lower speeds the vehicle would vibrate heavily due to a cracked rim.the officers vehicle was repaired under warranty.*nlm

Police officer noticed one of the front tires was flat due to a faulty/cracked rim.

The contact owns a 2003 ford crown victoria pi. The contact stated that about 2 months ago he noticed a slow leak in the tire.while he was adding air in the tire he discovered that the rim was cracked. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the vehicle was no longer in recall status since the vehicle was no longer owned by a police officer. The contact is concerned about the safety risk and doesn't think it should matter if a police was driving the vehicle or not. The rims have continued to crack.the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was approximately 105,000.

Left front wheel has slow leak. The tire was dismounted and had no punctures evident. The whell was inspected and a small crack was detected. The wheel was replaced. The cracked wheel was returned to ford motor co., attn: deb usrum.

My 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor has five wheels that have the affected date code stamped on them that indicate they are defective. The local dealer service writer tells me that they do not need replacing if they are not leaking air. Am i supposed to wait until i am stranded or invloved in an accident before ford will replace the rims?

Rims cracked on three of the six crown victorias owned by the city council of bluffs. *mr ph

Tire rims are separating on the weld-we have four rims that this has occurred to, on two different vehicles. The tires will hold about twenty pounds of air even with the weld break.front end shimmies at 30 mph or more which indicates the problem. *nlm

Failure of weld point on wheel rims causing rapid air loss in tires, a very dangerous situation.problem begin when i found tire gone flat after driving from milford oh, to middletown oh.tire was fine before i left milford.tire held air for only a few hours and my spare had a cut in the side wall from a tool in the trunk, so i put air in and took it back home.took it to the milford walmart tire and lube center, they discovered the air leak at the weld point.told them to put the rim from the spare on... Same problem at the same weld point.looked up online an found there is a recall.went to ford dealership garage and they told me there is a recall but only if it is still a police or fleet vehicle.called corporate customer line and was told same thing and it was only a danger for "extreme driving" and they could not replace for a civilian.both rims have spent time on the car and i drive it normally and yet two failures have occurred.i find it shocking that a known defect is only to be replaced for govt and fleet but not civilians who could be in the same danger of a tire failure on the highway.dealer and ford motor company refused to replace the defective parts.i was told by another customer at the ford garage he had the same problem on his used crown vic (and was also refused service) and he suggested i make a complaint here.

Consumer noticed a slow leak in the right rear tire. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated that the rim was cracked.consumer felt the rims weredefective.

The rims split in half. Ford acknowledged there was a problem.
