The car was parked inside our garage only for a few minutes when it caught fire and burned our house down.

Car sat for about 2 weeks in 6 to 30 degrees f with out being started. On 01/03/2001, i started the engine just to run it for awhile. After about six minutes i put the transmission in o.d. Drive with my foot firmly on the brake. The engine immediately accelerated to a high rpm and put the car in motion, i was able to hold the speed down with the brake, but not stop it. After about thirty feet i put the shift lever into park. The engine immediately dropped to normal rpm and the vehicle came to a stop within ten feet of a heavy traveled intersection. This was too close for comfort!

After using headlights for about 1 hour the headlights begin to blink on and off. Once the headlights are cut off for a while they begin to work again. The dealer was not able to correct problem.

Headlight covers are plastic. They were transluscent to begin with, but turn opague with age. This is normal for regular plastics, but should not happen with good optical plastics. Process cuts down amount of light shining through headlamp onto road, lessens lighting distance and intensity. Dangerous whether low beams needed because of oncoming traffic or high beams needed on windy roads or higher speeds where line of sight needed is beyond lessened lighting distance due to opaque lenses. When traveling on the highway with the high beams on, the switch fails and shuts off all head lights.this is a serious safety hazard when traveling winding country roads in pitch darkness.this is also a serious condition when traveling low speeds on a narrow gravel road when turning off the highway.this has occurred on several instances when traveling normal highway speeds and at low speed when turning into a county road from a paved highway causing loss of all visibility of the road.if i were not a defensive driver it would have caused me to run off the road because i could not even see the road.

Car kept accelerating after i let off. I had to stand on the brakes to make it stop. The front wheels locked up but the car kept moving. While pulling up to a light consumer hit another vehicle in the back, air bag did not deploy.seat belts were worn at the time, but shoulderbelt did not lock holding occupant. This defect caused occupant sust injuries. Head went through win shield twice, bounced against seat, minor bruises. Fordclaims shoulder belts was not working properly, lap belt was working. This defect can cause bodily injuries in case of an accident.

Air conditioning only works if it's not too hot. Brake rotors keep going out and need to be worked. Seat tracks can come loose any time. Had problems with loose driver's side seat for several years.seat would rock on frame.seat frame finally broke away from track assembly on 4 june.disassembly of seat showed 3 of 4 bolt-holes holding seat to track had totally disintegrated, the lf seat track link had snapped, and there were several stress cracks (one completely through!) in the seat frame itself.have researched 120 separate incidents of this seat failure condition on odi consumer reports on-line database on full-sized fords, lincolns, and mercurys in years 1990-1996.dealer said my car was "out of warranty" and would offer no satisfaction/remuneration for this obvious defect.would like to share my analysis of these relevant odi listings so nhtsa/odi can pursue this with ford.have compiled them into a 48-page document and also a spreadsheet to total the figures.this is a very dangerous condition possibly affecting many thousands of vehicles, including many crown victorias used as police cruisers.several database listings show "seats collapsed""seats fly off track"and seats separate from car floor during accidents.i am a 3rd generation auto mechanic and managed a goodyear auto repair facility for 6+ years.i know cars very well and have never seen seat assemblies built as poorly as this one!judging from the odi database, i am far from alone in having this defect on a ford motor company product.they must have reengineered the seat since the problems drop off noticeably after 1994.i did not receive any recall notice from ford nor could discover any recalls in the nhtsa/odi db for this reason.there were a few service bulletins.but, nothing resembling a recognition of the seriousness of this problem.a driver cannot control a car if his seat is broken.this also defeats the proper workings of the seat belts and other passenger restraint systems.i would appreciate a call or e-mail reply to discuss this with nhtsa/odi and pursue this with you.regards,jim mathias

Front driver's seat has ripped out of the seat mounting bracket.

As i pressed on the back of the seat there was a metalic "snap" sound and the back of the seat flopped back 3 to 4 inches on the driver door side. Later on viewing the seat from the front of the car in front of the brake peddle i was able to determing that a welded in circular, threaded, metal, tapped fastener, (a custom made nut) had torn through the pressed metal fram that attached it to the motorized portion of the seat. The resulting hole in the pressed metal frame component was about one inch in diameter. (2) the failure of the seat makes the vehicle impossible to drive.(3.) i have checked for recalls and found none relating to the seat except for an electrical failure. I haven't repaired the vehicle as yet but i will likely go to a automobile recycling yard and look for another seat. Of course inspecting first for the same failure. Also, as near as i can tell this vehicle was never in an accident . And it only has 84,000. Miles on it.

The driver's side seat track broke . Consumer states bottom and back of front driver's seat is loose, seat constantly shifts when vehicle accelerates, slows down or stops,consumer states there has been numberous technical bulletins ,dealership would not replace broken part under service warranty, consumer was told there must be a large number of problems with that part.

Front left seat to track attachment bolt tore away when someone leaned on the seats' backrest to reach for something behind the seat. The seat is no longer anchored at that front left corner leaving an unsafe condition. In a rearend collision the seat can easily tilt back causing injury to passengers.

The contact owns a 1992 ford crown victoria.when the contact places her vehicle in drive and depresses the accelerator pedal, the vehicle suddenly accelerates to 40 mph and the engine rpms increase.she must apply the brakes with both feet in order for the vehicle to come to a complete stop.afterwards, she smells the scent of burning plastic.the mechanic stated that the failure could be caused by the brake pressure switch.he informed the contact that brake fluid may be flowing to the switch and causing the heat to activate.this causes the vehicle to accelerate and could result in a fire.the contact also stated that he loses brake power occasionally, even though brake fluid is present.he also noticed smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle, which is causing the transmission to fail.the powertrain was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 33,000.

This car had continued brake defects from 03/29/01 (our first fire) until the last fire. We spent nearly $4,000 on brakes, each time being told the problem was fixed.finally, after the last fire in fremont, ny, 3 days after the last repair bill of nearly $800 for brakes, the company found a statement from ford saying this particular make could have a bad booster (from the factory), which would not slow the car properly after 60 mph and cause excessive wear and brake failure. He told my husband ford often doesn't issue recalls until someone has trouble with a part. Ford knew this existed; it is dated 08/09/1992. We feel ford should be made to answer why they did not issue a recall that caused not one, but two fires; the last one on record with fremont, ny police and fire trucks, who responded, and which could have been a lot worse., not to mention refund some of our money. If a recall had been issued, the problem would have been solved. No one else should have to spend $4,000 on brakes in 50,000 miles, and have them catch on fire three days after a very expensive repair job. All other major car makers issue recalls before owners have problems, if they know it. Why doesn't ford? why don't you make them do that?

The way the brake line is routed it rubs against the fire wall and it causes the brakes to fail.ttrear brake line is covered with 4 inch rubber hose and held on plastic cable ties where the undercarriage and firewall meet, the line rubbed and wore through the rubber hose and made a pin hole in the brake line, losing all brake fluid in the master cylinder.

This problem concerns the steering column of a 1992 ford crown victoria rubbing against a metal gas line until large amounts of gas spill onto the hot engine and cause a safety of life problem... As long as the engine remains on the electric fuel pump will continue to pump gas onto the fire caused by the fault.please notice that i am an engineer and this is not a small matter - it involves many thousands of vehicles and an identical vehicle has had a recall - yet ford has not had a recall on this model although i took this issue to the top of ford motor company.the issue deals with a gasoline leak caused by the steering column rubbing on a metal gas line - causing gasoline to leak from the worn gas line in large amounts.i first noticed the leak from the smell of gas - then i noticed large pools of gas leaking from under my car.after investigating the cause, which was the rotating steering column rubbing on the gas line, i contacted the ford dealer andi contacted ford motor company who put me off to an area person who rebuffed my complaint.the dealer showed me a recall for the lincoln continental with the same exact problem.... The lincoln continental and the ford crown victoria are identical in this respect.... The recall showed the exact gas line and the problem.... Check for yourself.... The lincoln continental and the ford crown victoria are exactly the same under the hood.the recall showed the same gas line and the same problem.however, if you are a credible organization, you will research this by simply looking at the recall for the lincoln continental and wonder why the recall never happened for the ford crown victoria.... Keep in mind that we are talking about a safety of life situation..... The gas leak is considerable..... I heard a loud metallic noise when turning or going over slight bump.i was advised by bp procare in cincinnati that frame was cracked where rear sway brackets mount to frame.the left side was about half-way detached, and the right side had a hair-line break.i have taken car to madeira frame and body shop carstar in cincinnati (513 561-0200) to, have this repaired.please advise me if there is a safety recall for this failure and/or if i am entitled to reimbuursement by ford.

I have this car for 11 yrs and was very upset when thetran went out on vacation at 83000 miles. I had no other way out but to get a life time warranty on a new tran from aamco knowing i would have the car for many more years. Im glad i did because after a year it went out again and aamco had to foot the bill but it caused me time. The window regulator went out twice in the front. Once in 1995 and 2003. Pain in the butt if you live in so. Cal. Would i buy the crn vic again?yes.

Pain in the butt if you live in so. Cal. Would i buy the crn vic again?yes.

The "anti-lock" light illuminates on the dash as you drive the car.it resets after the engine has been shut off and restarted, but the light reappears after using the brakes a few times.this seems to ocurr more during hotter temperatures.i know, from experience, that if the anti-lock warning light appears, the system "is" malfunctioning.my concern is this.i am a police officer also.i've noticed that several of our fleet crown vics are regularly experiencing this same problem.several other law enforcement agencies in the area are also experiencing this same concern.it would appear that this has become, or is rapidly becoming, a concumer concern for orerators and owners of crown victorias after the model year 1992.my personal crown victoria is just now reaching the mileage of a second year police vehicle.i had thought the police vehicle concern might be due to the way the vehicles are regularly driven.but, now that mine is doing the same thing, i wonder if this isn't a matter of deterioation due to age.it would appear to me that a manufacturer's recall may be in order.also, as an evoc (emergency vehicle operations course) instructor, i know there are law enforcement agencies who are not paying attention to this warning feature and are leaving these vehicles in active service with this dash indicator activated.i would appreciate your comments and research into this matter to determine if this is an isolated concern or widespread.i would also like to know whether there will be any cost to repair relief for the repair of my personal vehicle if this is determined to be a manufacturer's concern.....thank you

Car kept accelerating after i let off. I had to stand on the brakes to make it stop. The front wheels locked up but the car kept moving. Using 250-280 pounds of pressure on the brake pedal i finally stopped without incident.the incident can be viewed at youtube. It is titled ram cam episode 5. It is the last part of the video.

On numerous occasions vehicle accelerated on own accord, moderately to 40-50 mph (20 to 30 times). Able to brake and contain. Last two incidents, vehicle accelerates very rapidly, to in excess of 60 mph, unable to contain with brakes, had to shift into neutral, engine continues to rev for 1 minute.

I parked my 1992 ford crown victoria on the street while i was at my home for 45 minutes. I decided to leave to go somewhere else. When i got to my car, i smelled burning and saw wisps of smoke coming from underneath my engine area. I quickly opened my driver's side door and smelled smoke and popped the hood. Inside, there was a small fire (grapefruit size) in front of the steering column. I ran into the house and got some water and doused the flames. I was very lucky, because i seem to have caught the fire within a few minutes of when it started. I took the car into my local ford dealership, and the problem was the cruise control deactivation switch. They replaced the cruise control switch and a wiring harness that had burned (at my expense). They informed me that the problem was fixed.i called ford to discuss this issue, and they informed me that my car was under recall back in 1999, and the problem was fixed on 7/7/1999 when my dad owned the car. This was actually even more concerning to me, because the replacement switch, which supposedly fixed the original spontaneous combustion problem, seems to be defective as well!! so my car is now on its second "fixed" cruise control switch. I am also concerned from my discussion with the nhtsa representative. He said that no recalls can be issued for vehicles that are over 10 years old. He then told me that my complaint would not do anything since my car was over 10 years old. I don't expect to be reimbursed from my experience with the fire, however, this is disturbing to me knowing that my complaint could be dismissed out of hand. I want to make sure that others don't have this same problem. Especially when dealing with a car setting itself on fire when it is not running. This complaint should be thoroughly evaluated before dismissing it. If the car had been parked in my garage while i slept, it could have easily burned down the house, or killed someone.
