While driving at any rate of speed, or even while the vehicle is stopped, the vehicle kills without warning.there is no warning.the dealer has attempted to fix the problem since 1/25/00.since that date, i have had the van in my possession for 5 days.the longest i have been able to drive the van after it has supposedly been fixed is 3 days.i am told that the dealer can duplicate the problem but can't diagnose it.this is an extremely dangerous situation!

Ignition switchwiringshorted out, resulting in a fire.

Ignition system failure caused fire.

I already submitted this form earlier today, but i realized i made some errors on the form so here is an updated form with the correct information. As i explained on the first form, there are two related problems which have been occurring with our ford aerostar mini van. The first problem is that the sliding side door does not close properly because the door guide-trackis defective and has broken at the point where it attaches to the vehicle body behind the latch strike-pin. We had this repaired in december of 1998, but it has broken again only 15 months after the first repair.the other problem is failure of the electrical system, which is related to the door defect, because sometimes when the door is not latched properly, the door-ajar light comes on and makes a terrible grating/buzzing noise and at the same t ime causes all the electrical systems to fail. The turn signals, windshield wipers, fan , radio, etc all freeze-up. This has happened twice while driving, and twice the ignition froze and i could not start the van. I had to turn off the key and restart it to get everything working again. These electrical failures are clearly linked to the sliding door problem because the only occur when the door-ajar light is flashing and making that grating sound when the door is not properly closed.

Key turns freely due to failed cylinder assembly ignition lock.

Dt:the caller said ignitionfailed.she said a year ago that the vehicle started by itself without a key. She stated that currently she had intermittent trouble starting the vehicle. The lights onthe dashboardwill come on but the vehicle will not start. Dealer said vehicle was not recalled. They will not help her for free. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.

Started vehicle, within 5 seconds van filled with smoke and caught fire under dash.final diagnosis from sam swope ford in elizabethtown is that ignition switch shorted and burnt up wire harness under dash.

When putting the key in the ignition switch the key would get stuck. Consumerhad to have someone go under the dashboard to get the key out. Also, consumer had to get two different switches put on the vehicle. But problem has returned, and the dealer can't determine the cause.

You can pull the key out and the van will stay running. Crank the van and all the lights such as abs brake, airbag, oil, ect. Lights stay on and you have to turn the van off and then crank it again and the lights usually go off.

Failed head gasket in 1997 covered by ford.both head gaskets failed this month, after adding 50000 miles, and ford will not discuss repairs.3.8 l engines in some other models are covered by an extended warranty because ford has recognized a defect in the gaskets but will not consider mine.this is the second failure in only 3 years, 50000 miles.

Consumer noticed oil leaking from the bottom of the vehicle due torusted oil pan.dealer has been contacted.

After fueling, the engine turns over but will not start.owner waits 7 to 10 minutes and the engine starts. Vehicle runs normal until a fuel stop.if the engine is left running while fueling, then there's no problem.

Fuel line was not on properly, was made too short, they held it on with a clamp.

An electrical short in fuel pump. Vehicle was experiencing a loss of power and fuel gauge becomes erratic. Dealer contacted. All the gauges quit working and the engine stalls while driving due to main dash wiring harness overheated and burnt.

There is a very strong smell of gasoline fumes in the van.about 2 years ago, the fuel line system was replaced by the dealership under warranty. Dealer is aware of the current situation, and stated to consumer that fuel line could not be replaced free of charge.

While driving 30 mph, vehicle sputtered a few times, then stalled. Would not start again. Towed to dealer. Dealer could not find cause.wanted to replace fuel injection system. Consumer then repaired vehicle himself, fuel pressure regulator had failed and flooded engine compartment with fuel.

When filling up the fuel tank, the engine turns over, but the van will not start until it sits for about 10 minutes.when taken to dealer, dealer stated that it would take about $800.00 to correct the problem. Owner does not agree with the findings, and continues to experience a problem when filling the tank.

Plastic fuel tank is cracking at the top which is causing a massive fuel leak, and possible hazard.fuel tank must be kept at half level, but it does not stop fumes from entering compartment.

Fuel system failed, causing vehicle fire

The contact owns a 1995 ford aerostar. After refueling the vehicle, the contact detected a strong fuel odor around the vehicle. The contact discovered that the fuel tank was leaking fuel. In addition, the fuel strap and the fuel inlet were cracked. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000.

The original headlight switch overheated & the brake, tail, dash & head lts go off, switch 1/2 in will work.replacement after approx 1 yr is doing same.

The side sliding door does not close and latch properly because the side-track door-guide is misaligned or weak, causing it to crack and break at the point where it attaches to the vehicle body behind the striker pin. This causes the door to sag slightly, thus preventing proper latching. Also, when the door is not latched properly, thedoor-ajar light comes on and sometimes makes a loud grating sound behind the dash rather than the chime sound it is supposed to make. A few times, while the door-ajar light was buzzing, the electrical system failed as well. The turn-signals, fan, radio, wipers. Etc., all froze up and would not work, as well as the ignition. I had to turn off the key and restart the van to get everything to work again. Obviously, this electrical failure is related to the sliding door malfuntion, since it has only happened while the door-ajar light was flashing. We had repairs done at our ford dealer, but the problems continue to recur, so the dealer can not figure out how to fix these dagerous malfunctions.

Sliding door would not close properly, consumer drove vehicle with door partially open.*mjs

Side door won't open at all from the inside or from the outside, and the consumer can't determine the problem.

The sliding door does not latch and is inoperative, which may cause any occupant to fall out of the van if not restrained. Please provide further information.

Auto-transmission; system has history of stalling or not responding to acceleration, putting owner in jeopardy. Please describe details.

Continual loss of torque over last seven months. Dealer has always said it was the small engine until on 5-1-00 it refused to take off when stopped at a stop sign and had a leak coming from the transmission. Leak later stopped and a check of the fluid level showed it to be normal. Ron clark ford checked it out today and said the torque converter and entire transmission was worn out and estimated replacement at $2,800 for a rebuilt transmission. It was brought to their attention that each time we have taken it in for a check for the symptom that lead to this failure we have been told that nothing could be found wrong.

Consumer found out through a technical service bulletin that transmission had a design flaw.they had to alter the original design to repair the problem. Opening to transmission pump was too small, allowing the pump to become clogged up. It built presure to blow the front seal.

Very disappointing vehicle! np safety defect mentioned in summary.

Transmission/gearsfailed more than once. The consumer says the cost for replacing the transmission that failed again was paid by the consumer.

Ford refunded us $1000.00 for 1 transmission, the first one was still on warranty, the most recent transmission failure occured at 55 miles per hour and it wasthe tourque converter that blew in this case.

Recall 97v204000: transfer case: recall been repaired twice by two ford dealersquality ford, whiteville, nc and pervis brothers, fayetteville, nc 910-864-3983.the problem is still occurring, remedy did not fix the safety defect.owner has been trying to get rid of the van, dealer would not take it for a trade in. *ml

Recall remedy did not correct the problem which has reoccurredwith the transfer case that was replaced, but problem was not corrected.recall number 97v204000.

Recall work performed on the transfer case/driveshaft, was not completed in a timely manor. (# 97s83).

Consumer received recall letter for transfer case/drive shaft, consumer called two dealers for an appointment. Both refused to order the part until they have a primary inspection. Recall letter stated that the vehicle must be serviced without delay.

Consumer took vehicle in for recall on transfer case, recall no.97v204000. Vehicle was repaired, but problem reoccurred.upon deceleration from speeds 55 to 70 mph, creates a grining noise in the area where the parts were replaced, consumer is concerned that current parts would fail and cause problems controlling the vehicle, consumer states that the grining noise was not occurring before the factory recall and parts replacement.

Received recall notice 97v204000 concerning 4-wheel drive & contacted dealer. Took vehicle to dealer for repairs. Picked up vehicle. Was not satisfied with the recall repairs.

Transfer case failed due to driveshaft vibration.

Aluminum front clutch piston is causing the transmission to become inoperative or defective at approximatly 40,000 miles. Dealer and manufacturer are aware of problem.

Transfer case failed due to driveshaft vibration.

This vehicle is exhibiting some of the same symptoms as previously experienced with the recall number indicated (97v204000). This recall was done in early march 1998. The resonance, which occures while the vehicle is neither being pulled by the drive train nor the engine being pushed by the drive wheels(floating between acceleration and decelleration), is begining to be in the drive train, just as it had been before the recall. Is it possible that the recall procedure was incorrect, or not completely engineered? gibbons motor sales, dickson city, pa has in my past experience been competent. They were the servicing dealer. I feel that the problem is returning. I am unsure if the company would be obligated to repair this problem again?

Consumer had new tires put on vehicle due to vibration, problem still exist. However, the drive shaft / transfer case was replaced which was the cause of the vehicle experiencing sudden acceleration and vibration, prior to recall notice (97v-204).

Transfer case failure.

Transfer case exploded causing extensive damage to transmission components prior to recall notice.

During installation of carpeting, cutouts partially covered holes and bolt was forced into hole with edgeof carpet, causing cross-threading.

Went to install car seat in three row, passenger side and the seat belt came unlatched. It will not stay buckled at all. Went to a dealership and they want to charge us over $100 for buckle and an hours worth of labor. We are due in 2 weeks with third child and that is the only spot left in the van that the car seat fits in.

Van was total loss. Air bags did not deploy upon impact, seat belts also came unlatched. Please describe.tt

The middle seat belt in the third row got stuck and a child had to forced out of it.tt

Both shoulder seat belts in the middle seat of this 1995 aerostar mini van stopped working this week, one seat belt has nohold meaning you can pull it all the way out of the panel and it does not grab and secure my child, the other seat belt wont come out of the holder at all, so it is useless as well.this van has child safety seats built in ready accessable in the middle seat, but my 12 year old and my 9 year old are too big for them so they must have the seat belts to work properly and they both stopped working this week, i have owned this vehicle appx a year and never had any problems before this week. My van is in exccellent condition, with one minor scratch on the sliding door, i did a lemon check and found nothing, although we have had to have recall work done on the accessory power circuit. I thank you for all your time and help.dawn dowling [email protected].

Had adjusted seatback with lever, but when resting against it, it would make a clicking noise and jump out position. This causes problem with visibility. Had taken vehicle to dealer, and had seat replaced. But, problem still exists.

After passenger's seat was pushedattaching bolts were broken without a prior warning ofdefect.dealer refused to work onproblem.

I was parked waiting for a rider to get in the vehilce.the driver's seat snapped back( seat belt was on).thank god i was not driving as it would have caused loss of control of the steering wheel. Upon inspection of the seat the holding bolt sheared off with part of the bolt stioo in the seat hinge bracket.there are two bolts on the driver's side door hinge and 1 bolt on the opposite side.the bottom bolts on either side allow the seat to pivot (forward or backward).the top bolt (single) is the only blot to hold the seat from snapping back and this is the one that sheared off unexpectedly..

Height of driver's/passenger's seat along with panels between front and middle seats, cause blind spots/poor visibility.*skd

A bolt which holds back rest has sheared off and causedseat to collapse while driving. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further infoirmation.

You can pull the key out and the van will stay running. Crank the van and all the lights such as abs brake, airbag, oil, ect. Lights stay on and you have to turn the van off and then crank it again and the lights usually go off.

Abs brake failure. Also, premature wear of front brake rotors, resulting in scoring and vibration.

While driving vehicle to pa, brakes started to warp/ shake and hard to brake (abs), had them replaced and they warped again.

Experiencing ongoing problem withbraking system; whenever the brake pedal is applied the front end would vibrate and shake, causing difficulty in stopping. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that the material used in the pads is causing the rotors to warp. Manufacturer is aware, and has not found a correction to this problem.

Ignition switch cylinder came out.dealer was contacted and stated a rod was missing from the steering column shaft.dealer still has the vehicle and is attempting to repair it.

When turning the vehicle to the left or right the wheel will not straighten up when coming out of the turn. Please describe.

Fluid leak caused power steering pressure.

While driving vehicle front end shakes. Dealers has replaced bushings.also power steering pump failed, causing power steering to lock up.

1.power steering belt sheared off which could cause loss of steering and control of vehicle. 2. Consumer was driving at approximately 30-35 mph when it fishtaled and hit a pole head-on and then car onbumper. Upon impact, driver's side airbag did not deploy, resulting in injuries.

Having been driving at a low speed the break in the lower arm did not cause an accident. At a higher speed the van could have rolled very easy. Know ing now that you had a report on the rivets poping, i feel my life was put in danger along with my son's knowing that nothing else been brought to the attention of aerostar owners. I hope that you will contact me or tony mendez that has worked on the van . I feel that there has been accidents because of this but no one knew why. It is a design flaw that must be fixed as most people that own vans have children. Thank you

Sliding door not closing properly due to failure of the door track.

No alarm for the side door entry.side doors cannot be opened with a key.wheelchair tie down system is installed sideways--should be facing forward.

On our ignition key turn the ignition can be turned on without a key in it and it rotates round and round. On our sliding door the screws keep falling out @ the door keeps coming off track and it always shows door ajar. I think this is unsafe and both need a recall on them.

The rear cross member that supports the engine/transmission and transfer case sags down about 1 inch or more, causing the steel bolt to rest on the steel frame. The original support bar failed along with 2 replacement bars. The owner is experiencing the problem again. The replaced part does not correct the problem.replacement part # fmcf09z6a023c.consumer states that this part is defective and it can not support the weight of the engine, transmission, and the transfer case, the soft rubber gromets on each side will sag until the steel bolt rests on the steel support.

While driving vehicle front end shakes. Dealers has replaced bushings.also power steering pump failed, causing power steering to lock up.

Stress cracks aroundupper and lower control arms. When upper/ lower control armsfail, the door may come off.

Recall 94v239000 for "spare tire can contact brake lines"was for vehicle mfg. In oct and nov. 1994.my vehicle was mfg. On dec. 8, 1994.this problem happened to me.i paid for the repair in aug. 1999 and just now found out about the 94v239000 recall.this should be expanded to include my vehicle and possibly others.ford is not interested in this problem, but some research should be done to see how many other vehicles built after nov. 1994 have failed.

Tread completely separated from tire which has a warranty on the tire of 80,000 miles and only 35,000 miles were put on the tires before the blowout.the steel radial tore the bumper off of the van, thankfully my husband was driving the vehicle when this happened and was able to control the vehicle.when i took the tire to the firestone dealer he wanted to see the tread from the tire so that they could determine how much tread was left, but the tread flew off (completely separated) on the highway and we did not go back to retrieve it as it would endanger our lives to be on the interstate afoot.the firestone store did replace the tire but because there was no tread i had to pay for half of the tire and they did not offer to have the bumper replaced (it wasn't their fault).i had to have the tire so i paid for it and feel that firestone should have replaced it free of charge and should also have replaced the bumper.what bothers me most is the fact that there are so many tires being recalled, but i have not seen the affinity on the recall list but it did the same thing that the wilderness tires have done.are there other tires involved in the recall that firestone doesn't want the public to know about?please advise.thanking you in advance, rita cantrell( dot number: tire size: p215/70r14 )

Oil gauge shorted out and started smoking.please give more detail.

Re: safety recall 97s83-dealership is not attempting to perform repair in a timely manner.

You can pull the key out and the van will stay running. Crank the van and all the lights such as abs brake, airbag, oil, ect. Lights stay on and you have to turn the van off and then crank it again and the lights usually go off.
