Van just died out. Then all of a sudden the van started to fill with smoke and fire and bursted into flames. Fire believed to have started in the engine. The fire was put out by the fire department. Van had over $5,000.00 dollars worth of damage. The van has been totalled. Fire department stated that fire was caused by electrical problem. Manufacturer was contacted.
Electrical fire.
Replaced battery/negative ground cables.
Regarding the alternator/regulator fires, consumer believes the source of ignition is the alternator/wiring harness connection interface due to a high resistance connection.
After pumping gas, the vehicle fire started near the ignition switch.

While driving and without warning there was a strong burning rubber smell due to a fire inalternator system. This was the second aerostar star vehicle that had this problem.
Electrical: driving approximately 55mph , was exiting off the interstate and began to smell smoke. Arrived at work and parked the van and saw smoke coming from the sides of the hood. The vehicle was engulfed in flames. Fire inspector said the fire was caused by the alternator.

While driving at 55 mph smoke was noticed coming in the windows. Consumer pulled to the side to see what the problem was, and noticed that fire was coming from the bottom of the vehicle. The vehicle burst into flames, and the vehicle was a total loss. The fire department had to come and put the fire out. They could not determine what caused the fire. Dealer was contacted.

I purchased my van from monarch ford in exeter march of 1996, before buying the van i asked them to please give me the former owners phone number so that i could contact them inregards to any major problems they had before selling it back to ford.monarch ford refused and i guess that should have been a warning to me, i also asked if they had repainted the van because the ford and aerostar emblems were not on the back of the van.they said absotuly not that it was everything the same.it was only 10 months after i purchased my van that i noticed a gas smell and had it check with monarch in exeter.they assured me they could not find the source of the leak but that they could smell the gas.i have since had it to many other stations to have it check and i get they same answer.i have done some investigating myself and found thatford has a exsisting problem with their fuel tanks and leaks.i feel this is what has happen in my case. I feel i have a leak in my gas tank and that it needs to be replaced.i feel this is the manufactors reponseablity and that it why i am asking for your help.the gas leak is getting worse and the smell is really bad.i need this van fixed it is a hazard to drive.everywhere i take it they tell me they can smell it and that i should not drive it but that they can not find the problem and have also been told it is a factory problem?can you tell me what to do and how i can get this resolved as soon as possible.i know ford has this problem i just do not know how is the best way to get it fixed.i would appreicate any help you can give me so that i can get my van safe for driving again.please can you help me.sincerely [xxx]. Fuel tankhas developed cracks, causing a fuel to leak.dlr has replaced fuel tank prior to recall 98v190000 being issued. Dealer/manufacturerstated that vehicle vin# is not included in recall.

Consumer took gas tank out found it was cracked truck not under warranty .tt consumer had been smelling fumes for about 6 months, some of the passengers were getting light headed and car sick, consumer's husband took out the gas tank and found it had a crack in it the plastic tank where the structure part of the truck and the tank mount together, consumer believes thsi to be a manufacturer defect, it should have been mounted with rubber between the tankand the frame, this situation could cause an explosion because of gas leaking and fumes.

Nhtsa recall campaign 98v190000 fuel tank; the van was taken in as a service campaign by ford for the fuel tank back in 1999.after inspecting the fuel tank, the dealer told her the tank was fine and didn't replace it. Replaced front brake hoses.
The vehicle is only operated in texas. The design of the brake hose mount and a rubber collar at the steel to hose connection point allowed dirt and moisture to collect and rust the brake line in to.i was pilling in my driveway and was lucky i was not on the highway.this is very dangerous and i have to believe there are many other failures in the us.thanks

Possible master cylinder failure caused brake pedal to go to the floor when backingup resulting in driver hitting a pedestrian and a parked car.

Sliding door will not open from the inside or the outside. On 6/1698 the van was serviced for this problem by a dealership. Van will be taken to a dealership again for this problem.

While driving, the left front and left rear tires blewout, there was some damage to the vehicle, fut tur se, p215/70r14, dot number vdhynma396.
All four tires have a crack all the way around the sidewalls at tread line, in some areas cracks turn into tread (dot number: 25741-2 ??tiresize: 215/60r15)
Had two blowouts within a month almost resulting in crash (tiresize: 205-75-14)( dot number: tire size: 205-75-14 )

Windshield wiper pump failed.
Windshield wiper motor/pump does adaquately clear windshield;lack of fluid; mud from street comes up onto windshield, stopping pump; impairs vision.
Windshieldwiper motor assembly is fastened to the body with rubber insulators which are attached to the motor, glue breaks from the screws, causing the motor to break off mounts, and fall straight to the steering linkages. Dealer contacted and is aware of the problem.
