Tank spreading on motorcycle and becoming loose.

Gas tank on motorcycle is expanding/spreading.

Gas tank spreads (expands) out of the mounting brackets.the gas tank can be lifted off the frame.ducati has replaced the tank once and the new tank is spreading.i am losing steering lock-to-lock because of the expanding tank.

The contact owns a 2009 ducati sport 1000 biposto. The contact stated that the fuel tank swelled and detached from the vehicle. The dealer stated that they could chime attach the fuel tank back to the vehicle. The contact did not believe that the repair would correct the problem. The contact called the manufacturer who advised him to write a letter and purchase an extended warranty. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 16 and the current mileage was 119.

Plastic fuel tank on 2009 ducati sport 1000 has expanded and is now loose on the bike, causing a hazardous situation.tank has been replaced once by ducati north america but problem occurred again only after a couple of months.it seems the plastic is reacting to the gasoline or something in it (ethanol) and bulges making it loose from the frame.

The plastic fuel tank on my ducati sport 1000 is bulging and expanding, causing it to come out of the front mounts.

My motorcycle is an 09 ducati sportclassicand has a plastic gas tank which has begun to expand shortly after i bought it new.the outside dimensions of the tank have increased and it now does not sit correctly in the frame, the handlebars hit it on turning.previously it opened and closed without problems. The rubber mounts no longer sit on the frame.i have made no modifications to the fuel tank or fuel pump.i took the bike to the dealer who submitted a claim to ducati north america (the importer/factory) and they refused to replace the tank. Instead they shimmied it in place stating it is not quite bad for replacement.i am very concerned as to the safety of this motorcycle now.the tanks swelling has made it so the handlebars do not turn correctly, and it continuously expands asnothing got fixed and if the tank swells enough, it will split open and i am concerned this will happen while i am riding. I contacted ducati and asked them to rectify this but have not responded yet. From what i found out this is a wide spread problem and ducati is not doing anything to fix it. Must someone die or get hurt for somebody to do something? clearly these motorcycles have been sold and are still selling in the us market with a known defect. This is serious and your response and actions would be life and death critical.

Just bought a new ducati sport classic 1000 motorcycle from dealer and the gas tank has spread and is no longer attached to bike and the plastic tank is rubbing on the frame.

Fuel tank bulging and spreading at bottom front. This expansion has caused the fuel tank to become loose on the bracket, the tank wobbles and can be lifted from the frame. This occurred after only three weeks of purchase date. I have not had resolution yet from the dealer or manufacturer.

2009 ducati sport classic tank spreading problem.i purchase this bike new and have owned it for 4 months and the gas tank has deformed to the point where it no longer is attached to the bike.at highway speeds i can feel the tank lifting off the bike.i could image given a little more wind speed the tank would flip up and hit me in the head.i have investigated the problem and it seems this is a common complaint.the dealership where i purchased the bike has stated the manufacturer will replace the tank under warranty, but that the issue will persist with the new tank since it is of the same design.additionally, small cracks in the plastic (not the paint) are beginning to form around the fuel tank filler and checkered cracks can be seen around the side.as i have only owned this bike for 4 months and this issue continues to worsen and given that the replacement tank is exactly the same as the tank i have on the bike now, i may be replacing this tank a half a dozen times throughout its life.i am concerned after the warranty is over and replacement tanks are no longer available that i and others will be forced to modify the mounting brackets on the bike to fit the tank.and at some point the tank will ultimately fail.

Motorcycle: loose fuel tank due to expansion of the tank.i have a 2009 ducati sport classic 1000 and was made aware today at the dealer that the gas tank has expanded to the point where it so loose that it virtually lifts off the bike. This is clearly a dangerous condition but no recall has been issued and ducati has not informed me of this known problem. A new tank is being ordered under warranty but it is exactly the same component so the new tank will eventually expand as well. Apparently the cost of the tank is over $2000 so once my warranty expires this is a cost i will have to bear. Parts are on backorder for several months so this dangerous condition will have to persist for an extended period of time. There may apparently be a solution to spray the inside withsome type of epoxy but i am not willing to bear the $250 cost of doing that.
