Battery acid leaked on to motorcycle engine; damaging ignition wiring, damaging painted surfaces, and experiencing a sudden loss of power while in a heavy traffic situation.the vehicle is a 2001 ducati ms4.i'm also a member of a online owners group and have read of numerous complaints about this failure that is common to the ducati monster model.my motorcycle has been in warranty repair since april 8, 2003 waiting on parts.the battery is orientated on its side and is located directly above vertical cylinder valve head where it is exposed to heat with very little cooling.this is the second battery i've had replaced.prior battery replacement was 5/15/2002.also want to note that i had a leaky gas tank replaced under warranty between 3/27/2002 and 5/18/2002.the tank leaked from a poor weld where the tank hinge plate is attached to the gas tank underside, which happens to be positioned directly above rear exhaust header pipe.this also is a frequent replacement item for ducati monsters and 900supersports produced after 1998 with leaks specifically from that particular area.i've tried to contact the manufacturer and importer on many occasions to address these items with no substantive reply.leaking battery acid is an obvious corrosive hazard to the rider and machine.leaking gas tanks that expose fuel to extremely hot surfaces are also a hazard to a rider.any liquid discharge from a motor vehicle can be a hazard to other motorist.i'm concerned that these frequent failures could pose a harmful situation to a rider other than an obvious inconvenience.

I own a ducati monster s4 - year model 2001.original equipment on the motorcycle includes a gs brand battery - model #gt12b-4.last year, on a highway, my motorcycle was spilling gas onto the road causing my back wheel to slip.with no shoulder present, i had to wait to exit the highway before i could stop.upon doing so, i found that my battery had leaked and compromised the gas line causing the leak.the battery acid damaged parts of the engine as well.the battery was fixed under warranty and the engine is still awaiting parts from the manufacturer.i belong to a chat group focused on this type and manufacturer of motorcycle and have been involved in a lengthy discussion revolving around this common issue. As many as 13 people in the discussion alone have experienced this failure.luckily, no one has been hurt by it yet - to our knowledge. It seems that the motorcycle manufacturer refuses to deal with this problem in a responsible manner.because this is a common issue, replacement of said battery is not a solution.damage to other bikes includes but is not confined to fuel lines, damage/rupture to gas tank, electrical wiring, and compromise of engine integrity.any number of these things, in a normal riding situation, can be hazardous and/or lethal to the motorcycle rider or other motorists in the vicinity. As a saftey concern to motorcycle riders and others, i would like to see ducati of north america called to responsibility to the consumer and supporters of their products.

My 2001 748 with 2,400 miles..while driving on the freeway a "rod bearing failure" caused engine damage. Basically one piston stopped working. As i was pulling off the freeway the engine stalled and siezed.. I later learned that shredded metal flakes had clogged the oil pump and both pistons were broken..was towed to shop..ducati did start warranty work, however ittook them almost 8 months to get the part,s so i had no veh for 8 months..i sued ducati underthe california lemon law..they settled out of court for $18,500..

When applying brakes there would be chattering coming from front brakes.took vehicle to dealer for repairs, but problem still exists.consumer states the highbeam indicator was inoperative, there was an oil leak at the rear of cylinder head and consumer was also informed that there was swing arm damage.
