We had frequent electrical problem with the car and took it to the liberty dealership in johnstown, oh to get them fixed until we got to the point that it was going to take more than the care was valued to guarantee the fix.these items were not covered under our warranty.one day after pulling into our driveway after work, i shut the car off, opened the drivers side door while pulling the emergency brake and the air bags deployed, giving me a pretty good shot in the face.the car was sitting still and not running.the keys weren't even in the ignition.i called chrysler's customer service line and filed an incident.they assigned a.l. Gilbert to work on the case.a investigator was deployed from a private company out of dayton, oh.he took the car to a dealership in mt. Vernon, oh and determined by looking at the car's computer that it had been wrecked.obviously, this wasn't the case as there wasn't a dent or scratch on the car and i was sitting still in the driveway.however, chrysler refused to change their determination.even though it was requested multiple times, a copy of the report from the investigator from dayton, oh was never provided me. A.l. Gilbert blatantly called me dishonest because he said the computer didn't lie. I convinced him to let me take it to the liberty dealership and have the service manager look at the car while on the phone with him. The liberty service manager told a.l. Gilbert that there was no visible evidence of any accident on the car. A.l. Gilbert said there absolutely had to be something because the computer said so.the libert service mechanic said, in fact the only scratch i see is on the undercarriage and looks like he's driven on a gravel road.gilbert responded and said that was all the evidence he needed and that the decision stood.i still drive the car today but without air bags and with a dash that lights up like a christmas tree because of the electrical problems.

On july 27 1998 i was driving my dodge stratus south on state st in springville i was slowing down for a light i changed lanes to the right when my driver side airbag deployed ripping my hand off the steering wheel i stopped the car . My girlfreind and her kids where in the car. And jumped out of the car when i stopped. My arm was cut up from the cover on the airbag. I went to the hospital. Where they removed plastic from my forarm. I called the police and reported it.i called doug smith and told them what happend they looked at the car and said they whould not cover it because it was out of waranty, but i have exstended waranty they said to have my auto insurance take care of it. My auto insurance wont cover fatory defects. I was lucky i was'nt on the freeway or i would have been killed and other may have been hurt. Please look into this no one else would give me there time. Thank you.

While driving at 40mph the vehicle had a frontal impact on the passenger's side of the vehicle, hitting the left side of the other vehicle, and the defective airbag system did not deploy which did not protect the occupants in the accident.sensors are located behind the headlight.

I have an evenflo medallion v convertable car seat, model# 254191p2, manufactured 1/25/00. This particular model has a plastic harness tie that goes across the chest that the shouldar straps slide into. My son can very easily slide it off and get out of the straps. I have called evenflo 9/11/01 and spoke to jenny requesting they send me something that snaps together to replace it. She told me they do not make one for this particular model (even though it is their top of the line model, according to their website)but she can send me a new plastic clip so it will take him longer to get it off.i'm sorry but this is unacceptable, they make them for some models, but not all. I paid over $100.00 for this seat and as far as i'm concerned, it will not protect my son in case of an accident because this company doesn't care about all of their consumers, only those that buy particular models. I am asking you to find out why!!! please feel free to call, write or e-mail me if you need more info. Thanks for your time.

While the vehicle was parked it caught on fire. The consumer called the fire department to extinguish the fire.no injuries reported.prior to the fire, the consumer stated a mechanic worked on the vehicle and stated the vehicle had an electricalleaked.

Dt: contact's wife went into walmart and15 minutes later1997, dodge, stratus caught on firein the parking lot. Theoriginated from under the hood, possibly around the battery box or the master cylinder. The car was completely destroyed. This happened on june 5, 2005.the only problem the contacthad with the car prior to tthe fire was the check engine light caming on sometimes. The car has cruise control, and electric windows.

Car was sitting front of my daughter's house and it caught fire under the hood on the driver's side. Car was totally destroyed.

While filling fuel tank a fire commenced from fuel filler neck. Local fire department arrived to extinguish fire. Cause of fire believed to be static electricity. Dealer/manufacturer were not contacted at this time.

Power steering hosesdeveloped holes through the whole hosemassive fluid loss now power steering pump has froze and the car only has 67 thousand miles for 97 year 95 % of miles highwayalso a/c compressor and a/c dash switch both non working with fully charged compressor and all relays and fuses replaced.

While car was parked in a parking lot, apprx 30 min's when someone noticed the car was on fire. The fire dept was called and a tech from the place i was at went out with a fire ext. And put out the fire. Fire dept arrived and determined that the fire was started in a door panel swith (pwr door lock or pwr mirror switch)car was towed to scully motor and i calle d chrysler, they did a though investigation and found the fault to be in the pwr mirror switch. They have been great and have assummed responsibility for totaling my car and doing a complete buy back which is in the process. My concern is for the safty of others who may not have the good fotune i had of not being in the car since it burnt up at a fast pace. Hope this helps others, thanks karen.

Dt:the consumer owns a 1997 dodge stratus.she says that her vehicle caught on fire. The fire department told her that the fire started by a short in the driver's side panel.she contacted dodge and they said they wouldn't do anything about it because it was not their problem and it was not on recall.*eh

Takata recall, horn don`t work, millage don`t work ,gas light comes on and neddle moves up and down alot

Dt:the vehicle is a 1997 dodge stratus.at 27,000 the oil light came on while the consumer was driving and the vehicle cut off.when the consumer had it towed to the dealership they replaced the timing belt and pulleys.at 39,000 the engine would not start.when it was towed to the dealershipagain, they found that one coil was shorted, the pcm was bad, the timing belt had to be replaced again, they had to replace the module, the relay, and the plug wire.the whole electrical system had to be replaced.later at 62,000 miles it was leaking oil and would not start.it was towed to the dealer were the timing belt had to be replaced a third time, the head gasket and package, the plug and plug wires, and the spark plugs were also replaced. Currently at 89,000 the timing belt and head gasket need replacing.the vehicle is over heating and will not start.this caused the heater core to go out.the cluster has gone out; the whole lighting system comes on and goes off without warning.these current problems have not been repaired as of now.there are other issues that are included in a recall for the lower ball joints and for the floor shifter.the vehicle was immobile so the consumer can not take it to the dealership to have the recalls repaired.the manufacturer told the consumer there was nothing they could do because the vehicle was out of warranty.

Upon being struck in the left front wheel well, near the battery, my car bursted into flames. The vehicle continued to travel another 200 feet desipite various methodsofapplication of the brakes.i then deployed the emergency brake. The vehicle didn't stop until the powercut off and thefinally died.

Spark plugs failed.nlm

While turning the vehicle off the key could not be remove from the ignition switch.this caused the vehicle to continue running.

While driving oil light came on and vehicle stalled losing all power.took vehicleto dealer, and dealer replaced timing belt and pulley. Timing belt has been replaced twice.also had computer replaced.

Lost turn signal, radio, and rear window defroster functionality simultaneously.functionality returned after ignition was turned off and car was restarted.dealership said that they couldn't do anything because there was no failed part, but that it sounded like a glitch in the body controller.chrysler referred me back to the dealer saying that nothing would be done unless the part were shown to be defective.my concern is that nobody seems to be willing to share what systems are affected by the body controller and what the potential consequences could be if it fails.

When driving at highway speed 50-55 mph, upon taking foot off the accelerator the engine speed does not return to normal idle, and hangs up at 1800 rpms.the dealer is aware of the problem, but has not been corrected. The service manager stated that it may be a problem with the computer chip.

My head gasket blew out with 84,000 miles. Car is only 3 years old. I owned it for 2 years. I took it to a mechanic and 2 dodge dealerships.the first dodge dealership had my car for over 6 weeks they could not fix it after the headgasket was replaced. Basically the head gasket was replaced along with timing belt.after that the car would not start. The dealership could not fix it. Plus i had to pay for a computer, which did not fix the problem. The money was non refundable. The car was taken to a second dodge dealership in which they had it for about 5 weeks. They fixed the problem saying it was electrical. I had to pay over 450 dollars for that. The total i paid was over 1200 dollars. I think its pretty bad that the dealership coulnd not even fix it! it seems to run all right now.ive read how a lot of theses dodge models i.e.2.4 liter engines have a major corrosion problemthat the dodge company fails to tell anybody about or even try to fix it. I had to pay out of my own pocket.

The moving steering shaft between the steering wheel and floor of the passenger compartment is exposed. A clamp on the steering shaft caught the floor mat and made it almost impossible to steer the car. I talked to the dealer and was told all stratus are made this way. The steering shaft needs a shield. If chrysler doesn't fix this, i may sell the car. I have had numerous other problems, including timing belts/iginition key/ head rests/body, electric mirrors,etc.. This may be the last straw. I am a mechanical engineer with 20 years experience and ihave worked on cars since grade school. A design flaw like this borders on criminal!!! if there is an accident caused by this design, i would be glad to testify. It would be an open and shut case!!! i would appreciate a reply to this message if possible.

A short at plug to starter caused blowing of fuse.

Consumer statedwhile vehiclewasparked for 35 minutesit caught on fire.

Stereo and mirror quit working half way through a trip to st. Paul. Changed fuse, smoke came pouring out of the top right of the door panel. Fuse blew. Took door apart. Switch to electrical side view mirror had shorted. Melted down into harness. Big fire hazard because door insulation is right there. Don't know what to do

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle caught fire due to an electrical wire according to the fire marshal.the vehicle was parked and not being driven.the fire was in the engine compartment.there was nothing unusual about the way the vehicle was operatingbefore the fire.

Upon being struck in the left front wheel well, near the battery, my car bursted into flames. The vehicle continued to travel another 200 feet desipite various methodsofapplication of the brakes.i then deployed the emergency brake. The vehicle didn't stop until the powercut off and thefinally died.

Consumer'sbrother startedvehicle up to drivevehicle over toconsumer'shouse.in process of driving, smoke coming from underneath.consumer smelled the smoke.backseat started to evaporate.everything that was inside off vehicle was demolished. The clogged exhaust system causedthe engine toblow out.

Drove home from work.parked car in private lot.approxamately ten minutes later. Neighborhood kids notified me that the car was smoking. Upon responding. I noticed that thecar had flames coming fromunderneath engine and hood area.called fire department. The fire department stated that it was an electrical fire.car was totaled. The power steering hose ( part # 4764-347a / 0777c/ 25517 df 3251 3/8" id # 03067f1) ruptured and leaked onto the exhaust pipe manifold and ignited the power steering fluid stating the fire.i personally noted the smell of power steering fluid coming from vehicle.

Engine started smelling like burnt rubber, also started smoking, hearing electrical popping noise and then engine started burning with the glow of flames coming from under and out of the engine hood compartment. My children and i jumped out of the car cryingand very excited, truamatized by the sole fact of maybe getting burned up in the car or blown up.i then , without haste, went to my apt. And dialedthe policeat "911" and was dispatched over to the fire department.after, approximately 10 mins., the fire department arrived and extinghisedthe fire and made their report and speaking with me about the turn of events prior to the fire.

This is the second manufacture defect within the last 2 months, i have been stranded twice

Parked vehicle in garage and went into the house, about 5 minutes later heard a loud noise, went out to the garage and flames were coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. Had to pull the vehicle from the garage into the open.called the fire department and they put fire out.fireman stated that it was an electrical fire, and the vehicle was totaled.

I was going to my cousins graduation and had asked an officer about parking when he directed me where to go when i turned i heard a pop and smoke started coming from under the hood and it caught fire. The fire department was called out and the fire was put out. My car was towed to a towing yard, and the next day towed to my property. Everything in engine compartment burned. I had it looked at by a mechanic and he said that it was probably an electrical fire.

Ins. Adjusted unable to detect cause of fire which burned my car to the ground.total loss!! took fire dept 35 minutes to arrive.nothing left but the shell!car was parked and turned off!

Had pulled into parking area; then turned off lights & then ignition; lights failed to go off; have a 90 second delay timer which did not work; will be taken to dealer to check out electrical problem.

Vehicle was parked, had not been driven in approximately 4 hrs, vehicle caught on fire while parked.apparently started on drivers side dash and spread to the drivers door.

Takata recall, horn don`t work, millage don`t work ,gas light comes on and neddle moves up and down alot

Head gasket failed at 58k miles, caused oil leak, like so many other 1997 dodge stratus with four cylinder engine, 2.4l.

As my '97 dodge stratus es (2.4l) approaches 58,000 mi, it appears to be self-destructing, of course the engine is leaking oil (1 qt/week) at the infamous head gasket, cooling system is fouled (heater quit, flush+clean didn't solve) , and i just got a check engine light on my to work!i have been a chrysler customer for decades, but having a car that runs fine for 55k and then dies by 60k will make me buy foreignhow many complaints about the oil leaks will it take to get a recall? (i hope i add to this count)maybe if i get the next stage, an engine fire, at least the insurance might help pay for my toyota...

While driving vehicle stalled.consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had ittowed to the dealer fore inspection.mechanic determined that the head gasket needed to be replaced. Consumer informed the mechanic this problem occurred more than once andhad not been resolved.

A very small "drip...drip...drip" of oil started around 47k miles.drip became a gush by 50k miles.oil was flowing out of the head gasket as fast as i could put it in.(yeah, big surprise, huh?!)thanks, chrysler, for standing behind your product and making good on your screw-ups.typical american big biz attitude!you can bet my next vehicle will be a toyota! oh gee! i almost forgot - yes, i'll be sure to tell everyone i know to "steer clear of anything chrysler".no pun intended i assure you... Especially since your crappy engineers just cost me $1000.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at no particularspeed, the check engine light illuminates and the vehicle completely stalls.after stalling, the vehicle restarts following an extended period of time.although the vehicle has been seen by a dealer and multiple repairs have been made, the dealer was unable to remedy the stalling problem. The rear freeze plug was leaking. Updated 03/09/06.

The vehicle caught on fire .the fire was emitting from the engine compartment and wheel well areas. *sc

Vehicle is leaking oil and the oil light continue to stay on. Dealer states the vehicle's head gasket has malfunctioned. Please provide additional information. Ph

Head gasket failed at 31,000 miles on 1997 dodge stratus.

I had nothing but major problem with my dodge stratus it'sonly a 1997 with 86,582. I bought it used with 23,000 in january of 1999 from a car dealer. I have spent $2,335.30 in repairs in 2002&2003 in may & june of 2003 i spent $1,678.31 & $656.99 in july 2002 starting with brakes being contamied ,water pump ,radiator replaced, and it's being driven locally never been out of this state. I feel this is a lemon car because of the major repairs and the mileage is only 74,153 when i started having repairs and keep having major repairs totally $2,400 only had it 3 1/2 yrs. I filed a report with the lemon law in washington state.

Head gasket failed at approx. 72,000 miles.it seems like this is a common problem in dodge stratus and dodge neon based on all the complaints i have read on the internet.i would like dodge/chrysler to take some responsibility for the problem, as i was told they are aware a problem exists and have since change the style of gasket used.

Vehicleoverheated.mechanic determined that engine head gasket was the cause of the overheating problem. Oil was leaking through the seals.

While driving the the vehicle experienced vibration and engine noise.dealer replaced water pump/timing belt, etc.dealer cannot determine the problem.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

A fan belt was loose. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealertold consumerthat it was a bad leak coming from cylinder head gasket. Consumer is still having the problem.

1997 dodge stratus 2.0 sohc motor, blown head gasket, broken power steering pump, egr valve stopped working, leaks alot of oil out of camshaft position sensor, heater core ruptured, heater hose ruptured also, oil pressure sending unit stopped working .

I have a 1997 dodge stratus that i took in for overheating they replaced the thermostat, flushed the radiator, and replaced a belt.then three days later my car was still overheating so i brought it in again and this time the head gasket was blown due to oil leaking and the exhaust manifold was cracked.this was not cheap to fix all of this and prior to this happening i had to pay $650 to get brakes in front and back, roters, and replace the hydraulics in the rear brakes.both tie rods have broke also in the past two years.so overall i have had to stick a lot of money in to a fairly new vehicle.i don't expect to replace this much stuff on vehicle unless it is 10 years or older.i would like to contact chrysler to see if they would provide any help.i see by the other complaints listed that the head gasket seems to be a common problem.

Head gasket failed at 53,000 miles causing a loss of coolant which subsequently led to the engine overheating.had the vehicle towed home and filled cooling system with coolant/water.took to nearest dealer for repair; waiting for estimate of cost as of 10/5/00.idler pully failed causing loss of drivability at 43,000 miles. I had it repaired at a private shop for $350.00.seems too early for these componants to be failing.

Premature head gasket failure and ongoing body idle vibration

Eingine head gasket is leaking.gasket is being replaced by dealership.please provide any further information.

Head gasket blew at 60,000 miles.ball joint replaced./ rear oil seal replaced.

Oil is leaking from engine head gasket.the dealerhas been notified.

Engine head gasket blew out.also, loud knocking in front left side of wheel dueto rack pinon failure. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that repairs will be made at consumer's expense.

Head gasket blew and had to be replaced about around 70,000 miles.now the car is overheating again and there appears to be oil in the coolant, leading me to believe that similar problems have resurfaced again.given the tremendous number of similar complaints logged by consumers on this website and others, the company should take immediate action. *la

The contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus.while driving 30 mph, the contact rear ended another vehicle.the air bags failed to deploy.the vehicle was destroyed and towed.a police report was filed.the road conditions were normal.she noticed oil leaking after the crash.the repair shop stated that a new head gasket was needed.the current and failure mileages were 81,000. Head gasket replaced at 65k miles. Chrysler paid for part.

The head gasket failed resulting in oil leakage, the oil indicator never worked properly.*mjs

I took my car in for service because of an oil leak and was told that it was a faulty head gasket.my repair bill totals $1400 and chrysler is saying that they will do nothing about it.if it were still under 50,000 miles then they would have provided 'some type of assistance'.i would like to know when something is going to be done about this.it has been a major problem for quite some time now and surely there are enough incidents to support a mandatory recall of these vehicles.

While having the heater core repaireddealership indicated that head gasket was leaking oil into the cooling system and onto the ground. Thiswas a common failure with this vehicle, and there were numerous complaints listed on this issue.

Head gasket -have had to replace two (2) head gaskets due to leaks in three years. First one cost a deductible of $500 and the second one will cost me $250, although i know that dodge has issued tech bulletins to address installation problems.dodge did the good will bit in both cases by supposedly splitting the cost 50/50. This is an outrage that consumers are required to pay such hefty fees for inferior/faulty designs.brakes - apparently the design of the calipers includes a cylinder made of some type of plastic. This plastic is not able to withstand the heat of normal braking operations and will not contract properly when cooled down. Because of this the caliper sticks in an extended position which casuses the disc pad to stay in constant contact with the rotor, thus wearing down the pad prematurely and causing possible damage to the rotors.this cost me $559 the first time and since then i have simply been changing the pads earlier than necessary to prevent further damage to the rotor.although this has not resulted in an accident, i believe it could (or has to others?) cause an accident/fatality on an extended trip.

While driving oil leaked from the head gasket without warning.the consumer had to refill the vehicle with oil often.

While traveling head gasket leaked oil on toexhust resulting in a fire. Independent mechanic pointed out that head gasket leaking oil on to the exhaust pipe was a common problem with that type of engine.but the dealer did not believe the statement.

Apparantly all dodge stratus head gaskets are failing and it is not covered under the warranty.i guess dodge will sell you a cheap car and make up the difference by charging you a fortune to fix their mistakes.

Leaky head gasket-chylr "feels no responsibilty" to assume liability w/obvious defect.

Engine head gaskets are leaking oil ontoengine. Dealer will be notified.

Dampner came defective from factory.

Daimler-chrysler has refused to reimburse me for the replacement of a faulty head gasket.

Consumer informed by independent service agent that vehicle's head gasket was bad and that this had been an ongoing problem with this make and model of vehicle.

Head gasket leaking oil, chrysler will not provide relief.

Engine will continuously overheat. Also, oil and transmission fluid wasleaking.. Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not findcause of problem.

Blown head gasket, leaking oil from the rear part of the head

Head gasket failed.

Dodge chrysler did not inform owners of a potential problem with the head gasket.there was no recall notice; instead there was a "silent recall" -- that is, owners are unaware until there is aproblem.

Consumer believes that when the head gasket blew the transmission fluid burned out resulting in the transmission overheating and locking up.

The head gasket failed twice resulting in engine and transmission pump failure.nlm

Consumer noticed that oil was on ground that came underneathvehicle. Head gasket blew at 22000 miles before. Dealershipwas aware ofproblem.

Engine head gasketwas leaking oil at 51,000 miles. Spoke to mechanic this is a defect in the gasket. I have the gasket if the nhtsa wishes to inspect. Spoke to dodge they said it was a common problem with the stratus but it was not cover under the warranty.

Head gasket blew at 30,000 miles still under warranty but going out of warranty soon and noticed people with simular problems and would like to know how to protect myself from it happening when the warrenty is up.

Timing belt tensioner broke while driving, causing problems including rough idle, idle rpm cycling, surging, bucking, higher than normal rpms on deceleration, problems persist after three visits to dealer. *et

Head gasket leaking oil in engine.

Battery light came on and stayed on while driving, the dealer was contacted and appointment was scheduled. While driving car 13 miles for repairs, 50-55 mph, the engine light came, on and the engine caught on fire. Fire department came. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Vehicle developed oil leak.diagnosed as head gasketleak. Warranty will not cover repair.there seems to be hundreds of complaints pertaining to this issue yet the manufacturer appears to be ignoring the prob lem (apparent design/manufacturer flaw).why is chrysler corp. Not being forcedto address and resolve this issue?if their position on this issue is one of we dont care, which is what i hear by reading all the complaints about head gas kets and their failure to cover the repair, maybe the public needs to boycott th eir products.i know that i will never own another one of their products.qual ity seems to be a thing of the past with them. I just hope that one day manageme nts family members get stuck somewhere in one of their products like the i did.maybe theyll start caring about the people that buy their products and keep th em in business.i can only hope.

Head gasket blew at 70,000 miles. Cost 750.00 to repair. After researching, i have found many other people have had the same problem and chrysler knows of the problem but does not want to acknowledge it. Is there any way to get any compensation from chrysler for this?

I took my car to be inspected and they informed me that there was a serious oil leak due to a gasket failure.they advised me to take it to the dealer in the hope that there would be a "silent recall" for this design failure.i was also told that the cost for this repair would be about $1,000! while looking through the database of reported failures i noticed that there are several other reports about the same issue.please help!

Headgasket failed, dodge dealer informed consumer this is a known problem.

'head gasket' - we bought a new 1997 dodge stratus in march of 1997.at 20,718 miles the head gasket failed badly.it took several weeks to get it fixed (under warranty) while the part was redesigned.the head gasket was fine until 72,000 miles - at that point it failed again.i do not feel i should have to pay for an obvious design defect. I know the problem is widespread and the part has been redesigned several times.'headrests' - on our 1997 dodge stratus the adjustable headrests have broken - the padded headrest breaks free from the metal posts holding it to the chair.we had the passenger headrest replaced - it is now broken again as well as the driver's side.they break from the pressure of adjusting the height of the headrest.this seems unsafe to me - they break quite easily.

Vehicle has a massive oil leak and devolping a loud knocking sound.the vehicle is loosing approximately 1-2 quarts a day. The vehicle is overheating within 5-10 minutes into driving and the oil is burning off the motor. Please provide more information.

Head gaskets blewout, leaking coolant onto engine and cracking the exhaust manifold.dealer is inspecting and will repair vehicle. Consumer adds that the rear seal needed to be replaced due to the leak, total cost of repairs were $1600 dealer stated cold weather played a major part in damage.

Exhaust manifold - upon dealer replacing defective cylinder head gasket, was notified by dealer that the exhaust manifold has a crack and should be replaced. Prior to taking to dealer another garage had determined the cause for overheating to be from a defective head gasket. They did not mention anything about crack in exhaust manifold during their inspection of the vehicle. Owner feels damage was caused by the dealer upon removal of the cylinder head or due to excessive heat caused by overheating from the defective head gasket. Dealer refused to acknowledge responsiblity and refused to contact dodge factory representative. They said it was safe to re-install the cracked exhaust manifold and drive the vehicle. We are concerned about exhaust fumes coming into the vehicle and feel it is unsafe.steering rack - the power steering failed and caused vehicle to be virtually undriveable.when we contacted the manufacturer, we were told it was out of the warranty period. We therefore paid to have it replaced at a cost of almost $800.we feel that the rack and pinion steering rack assembly should not have failed with only 52,000 miles on the vehicle.

I had to fill my oil every week, my oil stick wasnt even reading the oil, thats how bad my leak was i then took it to an independent technician and told it was a head gasket problem. I then took it to another guy and was told there was a "silent recall" on head gaskets. My timing belt broke going 70mph on i-40 in the middle of nowhere at dusk in the tennessee/nc border. And b4 i left for the trip they told me it was ok to drive. Had to pay 300$ towing bill cause it was "ok" to drive! i will never buy another dodge again...i understand there can be problems with any car...but when they charge us the consumer to fix there mistakes makes no sense at all.

Or 4th. Gear, all i have is 2nd. Gear even if i were to put it in3rd. Gear manually.

Head gasket leaking oil at rate of 1 quart per 3,000 miles. Daimlerchrysler contacted but kept details regarding scope of failures a secret. They offered to split repair costs 50-50 with me (my portion to exceed $300). Contacted a number of dealers and independent repair facilities, all of which confirmed large numbers of head gasket failures across several model and engine lines. After seeing the number of complaints on this same subject on this site, i have to believe it is a major defect in either gasket design or material and warrants a recall to repair at no cost to the original owner. Vehicle costs too much ($20,000) to allow this type of a failure to continue. I currently own 2 chrysler built vehicles, but will not buy another daimlerchrysler product, ever.

Consumer has taken vehicle back for same problem twice.gaskets was consistently leaking.dealer charged consumer $500.00 for repair.

Head gasket failed causing oil to leak.

Headgasket is leaking. Please add further information.

My first head gasket was replaced 03/26/1998. Here it is three years later and it goes again? a call was placed to chrysler on 02/28/2001, and they even stated that the head gaskets are bad and a new one should do the trick.why should i have to pay for a second head gasket, when the very first one should have lasted the life of the car.this is absolutely ridiculous.today, i am sending a registered letter to chrysler as well.

Vehcile was leaking oil. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they stated that car was assembled with a paper thin gasket.

I took my stratus to a friend mechanic for what i thought to be a simple oil leak, he advised it was the head gasket. Also advised me that this was a problem with the neons and stratus. Should chrysler pay for this repair if it is a manufacturer defect? i do think so.

I put my car in for an oil change every 3,000 miles.today, when i had my oil changed, my mechanic advised me that i have a head gasket oil leak and that this is a common problem with dodge vehicles.my 3 year warranty expired in october, but i am hearing that this should be covered under a 5 year warranty.i would like warnock to repair this problem, under warranty.

Car was leaking about 1/2 quart per week;local shop put dye in oil system to find leak at valve cover.several other stratus owners have had this problem;ours cost nearly $200.this is the most second-most frustrating car we have ever owned (the first was a used lecar).after so much satisfaction with our 1990 spirit, we are so displeased that when we replace this car, we will not even consider a chrysler product.

Headgasket failure and chrysler will not commit to repair and wants to charge me for a diagnostic check of $100

Attention really needs to be brought to this problem.itis pretty obvious that a re-call of some sort should be initiated for the head gaskets on these vehicles.there is speculation that some sort of "secret warranty" that covers up to 5 years/100,000 miles exists.it is the duty and obligation of the nhsta to make sure that these kinds of things are taken care of so that consumers are protected against secretive warranties that only appear when the issues are pressed.please help!!!!!.

The oil leak has been ongoing since i purchased the car andi took it several times to the dealer as well as other mechanics to determine the problem.i was told that it was just the oil pan leaking and not to worry about it.now i find out that the head gasket needs to be replaced at a cost of over $600.00.the vehicle isn't even paid for yet.i also had to replace the alternator this past fall.i also had a clunking noise in the front end whenever i turned and after searching the web i find that there was a recall on the ball joint for this year and model.i don't remember getting a notice about that and shouldn't the dealer have thought about that recall notice when i had my car in repeatedly for this problem and they couldn't seem to find out what was wrong?instead they replaced the bearings and tierod ends.i am getting really frustrated with daimler chrysler over this vehicle.after all the reported complaints just on this website and you know there are more out there, chrysler should stand behind their products and at a minimum do a 50-50 for replacement of these defective parts.you can bet i won't be buying another chyrsler product.

The head gaskets on the car have gone out twice, once at 37,000 miles and now at 65,000 miles.now the dodge dealer is saying that the timing belt pulley has locked up and has shredded the belt and the exhaust manifold is cracked.the service department has told me that the pulleys never go out at this low of mileage.however, i have read numerous complaints about the same thing happening to other 1997 stratus owners.i have also read the numerous complaints about the head gaskets.the catalytic converter also went out on the car, i wonder if this was due to the oil leaking on it from the blown heads.this part is still under the emissions warranty, but what if it happens again after 80,000 miles?i cannot imagine why dodge has not recalled these vehicles when so many people have had the same problem?maybe they are waiting on a certain number of deaths from the loss of vehicle control due to the timing belt failure, or from fires caused by the oil dripping on the catalytic converter.i can not afford to replace the head gaskets every 30,000 miles and i can't afford to trade the car because i owe what the car retails for.i hope someone will help those of us who were unfortunate enough to buy this lemon before lots of deaths occur.if dodge doesn't want to help us.i think a class acton law suit would be very appropriate.dt

Automatic transmission would intermittently shift out of drive into neutral while driving 40 mph or more.consumer was concerned that the vehicle may be involved in a rear end collision because of this condition. Dealer was not notified.

Have contacted dodge/daimler-chrysler several times about transmission on my 1997 dodge stratus going out.hesitation on shifting into gear, slipping out of gear and back in on turns, trans leaks, slipping into gear suddenly and jerking the car, and so on. Car has only 66,000 miles on it now and i got it in 2001 when my father passed away. It had only 53,000 miles on it then. A trans shouldn't be going out at 50-60,000 miles. If dodge has a bad product they should correct it themselves. I shouldn't have to pay to repair a problem dodge already knows about and isn't doing anything about. I never haul or pull anything and i only put 13,000 miles on it in five years. Not heavy driving. I should not have any problems at all and dodge refused to do anything or pay for repair- just saying "it's past warranty".i cannot afford to repair but i should have a vehicle company that is proud of it's product enough to stand behind it. I only get $867 a month retirement and i'm 60 years of age. Daimler-chrysler should have made repairs when i first contacted them a year ago. This is a daily problem and getting worse. Hundreds of failures. I have to use the car for pet care so just continue to putt along until it (the trans) goes out completely.

Braking system malfuctioned, brake pedal went to the floor, causing extended stopping distance which could result in a crash.also problems with the transmission. Consumer states after backing up and then putting vehicle in drive, vehicle wont go forward.

On acceleration vehicle does not gear in. Transmission did not engage, and left vehicle stranded to be hit in traffic.also slips after acceleration or does a hard kick into gear.

Transmission failure.

The transmission has failed 3 times in my dodge stratus, wont shift out of 2nd gear,it was towed to the dealer 3 times they said they fixed it the first 2 times but it was not fixed properly. It is currently at the dealer again for the same problem. I have talked to 3 other people that have had the same problem with the transmissions in their chrysler vehicles however, chrysler corp main office denies any problem with transmission...not that i thought they would say so. But someone at the service department of my dealer admits that chrsyler knows of the problem but will not go public.

Automatic transmission failed. From research on the internert, this seems to be a common problem with chrysler transmissions. We received no help from chrysler or the dealer.

Manufacturer will not assist with apparent known transmission problems. Manufacturer agreed to pay half for apparent known head gasket problem. When will there be recalls for these two known problems.

Transmission fails to engage drive properly on numerous occasions, dealer unable to duplicate (very intermitent) or fix problem.front brakes noisy/groan on application (told this was normal by dealership) front breaks also squeek (simular to wear indicator) after replacement.

While driving at highway speeds vehicle began to lose power and a grinding noise occurred due to a malfunction in the transmission.please give any fuirther details.

Gear shift moves when car is in park. This item was recalled, and carwas suppose to be fixed. But has been in shop 3 times, and stillwasn't fixed. Recall 98v183000.

I have contacted dodge without any help. The representative i talked to was very insensitive to the problem i called in about. I know of 2 different individuals that had the same problem and got it fixed, even after the warranty was out. I had no option but to have the car towed and fixed. The car is only 2 and 1/2 years old and is only driven on the expressway. I don't understand how this could happen. Please contact me with any info. No safety defect listed in the summary.

The head gasket failed twice resulting in engine and transmission pump failure.nlm

On may 27,1998i called the dealer to have my car looked at because i was having a major oil leak.when the dealer got it in for service they noticed it was a blown head-gasket and fixed the problem for me.on nov. 11,1998 at 38616 miles i now have a bad transmiision and i'm wondering if it is a defect,i have a family member who owns a 1996 dodge stratus and she was expriencing some problems with her transmission.the transmission will not go into 3rd. Or 4th. Gear, all i have is 2nd. Gear even if i were to put it in3rd. Gear manually.

Consumer believes that when the head gasket blew the transmission fluid burned out resulting in the transmission overheating and locking up.

With no prior warning, i was driving my car on a busy street and when i tried to accelerate, the car acted like it had been put in neutral.i limped it over to a transmission place and they put a machine on it.the third gear is out so we had to have it rebuilt.the cost to do this is $1650.00.it doesn't seem that a vehicle should have to have a new transmission with only 9,000 miles out of warranty.we previously had trouble with this car because we were stranded at night with 3 children in the car on the freeway due to the timing belt being shredded at 23,000 miles.we had to be towed to a dealership and rent a vehicle to get home (70 miles away).after that, we had trouble with the manifold.we had a cracked manifold and i had to repeatedly go back and argue that there was something wrong.i finally got it replaced after 3 visits and a week long stay, it was fixed.now that we have been having these troubles, we thought we should file a complaint.

It would stick when i would put my car into drive or reverse and the engine started sounding louder than it should when i accelerated.then on friday october 1, 1999 as i was increasing speed from 35 to 45mph the rpm gage started spinning.though i had my foot on the gas the speed did not increase and it felt like my wheels locked up.i have been told that i am missing third gear.

Our transmission had at least 1500 dollars worth of damage from the factory. The local dodge dealer 's service dept sees at least one per week. It doesn't seem right.

Transmission range sensor--car "kicks and bolts" as though the driver slammed on brakes at 30 miles per hour. Also, car needs a new head gasket at 50,000 miles. Car has been services regularly and well maintained. What is wrong with this picture?!

The transmission suddenly down shifts to second gear, irrespective of speed, locking the transmission gear.

Automatic transmission suddenly downshifts into second gear, regardless of speed, causing the transmission to lock.

Intermittent delayed engagement at vehicle start up. Acceleration shudder during torque converter emcc operation at 28-42mph due to leak in transmission front pump. This is chrylser's a604 transmission that was renamed to 41te transmission in 1992. If i had known chrylser knew they were putting a defective transmission in their new stratus, i would not have bought one.

Engine will continuously overheat. Also, oil and transmission fluid wasleaking.. Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not findcause of problem.

Received recall transaxle floor shifter ignition/park interlock. Took to dealer for repairs. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the consumer that the recall repairs were already done.the consumer indicated that he has no idea when the repairs were made because he has no invoice.

After parking vehicle, the vehicle continued to roll down driver's driveway. The vehicle was in park position when this occurred. Also consumer received a mfr. Recall notice concerning parking pawl.*ml

Consumer saidit was laying on the front passenger's side.there was no fan belton engine.consumer said that dealer charged her$87.00.

About 3 weeks before the problem was realized, i heard a very loud whirring sound.i had taken it to feeney dodge in palatine to have the front brakes done.they did the brakes but i don't understand why they did not notice the left wheel bearing noise.i took it to goodyear in mt. Prospect for regular maintenance and they noticed it right away.they said that the left wheel bearing needed to be replaced.i had an amoco station i know well do the repair.why did a car that is only 2 1/2 years old need a wheel bearing replaced?i have never had a car have this problem.why wasn't this under the three year warranty?i contacted feeney and another dealer in the area and got told that no, that is not under the 3 year warranty.this repair should have been paid for by chrysler not me.the part had to be defective for this to have happened.

While driving 70 mph clutch flew out from under car.

While driving transmission shifts out of gear due todifferential.dealer has inspected vehicle.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus.the contact noticed that the rear passenger side seat belt did not properly retract.the dealer stated that the seat belt mechanism bolts needed to be replaced at the contact's expense because there was no recall.he attempted to locate the parts at various junk yards and noticed that every vehicle with the same year, make, and model had the same failed component.as of august 28, 2008, the vehicle has not been repaired.the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer.the failure and current mileages were 150,000.

Seat belt has a missing part, causing belt to twist.

Seat belt buckle design is too short causing difficulty in latching.

When vehicle was involved in a crash with 3 other vehicles, traveling about 10 mph, the shoulder belt did not restrain the driver, and there was no deployment of the driver's side or passenger's side air bags. Most damage done to the driver's side and the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle is being repaired.

The rear passenger seat belt which was rarely used, had detached from seat.the service dealer stated that it looked as if it were cut.nlmscc

Rear seat belt. Engine--cylinder head gasket.

Back seat cover failed.

Driver's side seat is broken.part of the seat whereconsumer's hip goes up a metal piece sticks out.consumer feelsframe may break completely, and family may be injured. Left front seat has been broken for almost two years.left door hinge broke too. Front brake calipers and rotors failed.

Consumer was involved in a frontal collision in whichair bags did not deploy, and rear seat released from the seat tracks.please give any further details.

Consumer states that when trying to apply the anti lock brakes. The brakes will lock up causing the consumer to have a vehicle accident leaving skid marks. Dealer notifiedts

Bought car and brakes felt funny and soon got worse.dealer surfaced rotors but the problem got worse.now, dealer wants to charge me for new rotors.

Ball joints went out and brakes would not work. Had to use emergency brakes to stopvehicle.

When applying the abs brakes at low speed the pedal travels to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, cause unknown.consumer states the brake pedal has to be pumped in order for vehicle to stop.

Consumer states brake system failed on three occassions, and were replaced by dealer.

Abs brake system broke at about 13000 miles. Olympic dodge says that i must replace both the left and right front spindles. That they are cracked. I brought the car into the dealer on 07/10/2002. They have ordered the parts which cost over $300.00. How can 2 spindles fail at the same time. How can they fail with only 13000 miles on the odometer.

Consumer states abs is not working properly and rotors are warped.

Antilock brakes failed twice.the second time on 08-11-99 i rear-ended another vehicle.chrysler has been asked to investigate also, but don't know if they will decide against their own product.would appreciate your help.

This is the 3rd time this has happened.when turning and brakes are applied there is a bad grinding in the front end the brakes go soft and stop working the car continues rolling as if i didn't have my foot on the brakes at all.it goes in for service on tuesday.i have had it at 2 other dealers for other brake problems.

Going down the highway at 65 mph, i put on my cruise control, the car in front of me slowed down so i pushed on my brake, which was supposed to eliminate cruise sontrol immediately. My cruise light went off but the car continued to accelerate. Applied brake harder, realized there was no stopping, pulled over to break down lane. Applied emergency brake, ended up with just sqealing tires and transmission shifting horribly. Let me just note that at this time i also had my 10 year old daughter in the car. Thank god a state police pulled up behind me, at which time i had the car at 10mph but would not come to a complete stop. My 10 year old child had to jump from my car to let the officer know why i couldn't stop. He ended up having to pull in front of me and slow down to about nothing to finally stop my car at which point he got out , came to my window and told me to turn off the engine. In this form i could not fill out the appropriate vin, etc. Because my car was towed and i am with a friend in mass. I will be contacting the dealer and dodge company on monday. Very scary experience for me and especially for my child. Maine state police was obviously involved. His name was roger.

Brakes would make noises wheneverapplied. The brake pedal would go to floor very easily. Vehicle did not stop readily. Took to dealer & nothing was found to be out of place.

Intermittently thebraking system malfunctioned, causing the brakes to lock up which may cause an accident.dealer cannot determine problem.

Consumer states brake system failed on three occassions, and were replaced by dealer.

While making a right hand turn the brake pedal went almost all the way to the floor. The pedal felt soft and spongy. This has happened at least two other occasions in the last six months. After this happens i try to duplicate the defect but it won,t happen again.

When i used the back button to correct an item, the original comments were wiped out. You have to fix that. We have had four brake failures on our dodge. Each has been exactly the same.the first two were on successive days when the car had less than 10000 miles on it. Bosco dodge inspected they brakes then and was not able to find the cause. They did replace the master cylinder with a factory replacement.this spring, they failed again in the same manner. Again, the dodge dealer was not able to pinpoint the problem. He did notreplace anything at that time. Today the brakes failed in the same manner.how do they fail?each time the car was parked in the garage over night. This was the first time the car was moved that day.three times the brakes failed less than 100feet from the driveway. My wife was stopping the car at the intersection. The fourth time was three blocks away.in each instance the car lost all braking power to all wheels as the brakes were applied. The bakes and car operated normally after each instance. In my mind, it sounds as if the anti-locks hung up in the open position.

Vehicle experienced total brake failure on four occasions. Brake pedal would go to the floor momentarily, and return after pumping the pedal a few times. Vehicle been in dealer's shop on two occasions.dealer informed consumer that nothing could be found.

During driving on snow the abs system caused a feedback to the system that resulted in locking up,and a pedal that rebounded out when braking on snow.

When applying the brakesvehicle slid about 130 feet as if on wet ground. Vehicle rear ended another vehicle. Dealer hasseen vehicle. Consumer now waiting for dodge to investigate before repair. .et.

The brakes go to the rotors without any warning, inspection completed on the brakes and they were fine, however within 17 days the brakes were worn down to the rotors, six repairs completed on the brake system, consumer feels the dealership is not completing the work properly resulting in return visits and repairs.*mjs

Vehicle experienced numerous brake failures, brake pads and rotors have been replaced many times.

Brake system failed and the engine caught on fire.possible due to malfunctioning of the brakes or engine leak may have been the cause.

This vehicle ran into the rear of another vehicle while braking from the speed of 70 mph. Upon impact, air bag did not deploy. The dealer has been contacted.

When braking, consumer hears a squeal coming from the front and rear brakes, manufacturer stated that this was normal and will not do anything about it.

Complained of brakes making rattling noise...dealer said that it wasn't unsafe but just annoying

If i am doing more than 40 miles per hour the car doesn't stop completely without sliding.

Brakes are squeaking.

Left caliper burned and froze, digging into the rotor;right caliper on the verge of doing so.the car had passed rigorous equipment inspection just 3 months before with no warning of impending equipment failure.car is under extended warranty; dealer said that only the cost of the calipers would be covered.had car repaired at a local shop that guarantees its work, both parts and labor.

Vehicle losing over a quart of oil a week. I noticed oil loss a couple of weeks after i purchased the car , but attributed it to normal break in. Now it leaks down on to the exhaust system and may pose a fire hazard. The front brake rotors have been replaced 2 times and are in need of replacementagain. Theywarp in a very short period of time.

Brake rotors warped, causing brake pedal to pulsate and the steering wheel to wiggle. Dealer said itwas owners fault because of dirt getting into the rotors.

The front brakerotors were warped andreplaced. While driving and pushing on the pedal, speed approx. 30mph, there appeared to be a pulsating action,.the brakes would move in and out under foot, car did not stop, tended to slide into a stop, a delayed reaction.dealer could notduplicate the problem.

Brake pads and rotors failed prematurely(less than 30,000 miles). (qcaw)

Consumer states abs is not working properly and rotors are warped.

Chrysler says it's normal for brakes to be replaced every 15,000 miles.

Right front brake line was rubbing on something. I have brake line to prove that there was something wrong cryl/dodge said because i had car towed to my repair place there was nothing thay could or would do for me.and this was not a problem. I have my 5 speed trans. Rebuilt and headlights replaced because of water getting in them.

Upon being struck in the left front wheel well, near the battery, my car bursted into flames. The vehicle continued to travel another 200 feet desipite various methodsofapplication of the brakes.i then deployed the emergency brake. The vehicle didn't stop until the powercut off and thefinally died.

Vehicle experiencing service bulletin problem with the high pressure power steering line causing noise.

My dodge stratus had am engine fire on 12-10-2006 as i walked away from the car after driving about 20-25 miles to my destination . A man ran up and asked me if that was my car that was on fire as i took a look i immediatealy called the fire dept and the fire was put out with out any one bring hurt.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus. The power steering high pressure hose was leaking into the engine. The 2.4 liter engine had aleak directly above the exhaust system. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was called and informed him that there were no recalls or warranties for the failure. The failure mileage was 147,000.

Power steering supply hose ruptured. Fluid dripped on to exhaust and caused a fire.

The power steering hose (part number # 4764-347a / 0777c/ 25517 df 3251 3/8" id # 03067f1) is located behind the cylinder block and runs along the top of itfrom thepump( located on the left side of the vehicle's motor) to the right side of the engine down to the rack & pinion. Because of the location of the hose when it rupturs/leaks onto the exhust pipe/manifold and ignites the power steering fluid starting a fire. This should be corrected so that it is placed lower or away from the exhust pipe/maifold.

The power steering fluid was contaminated which caused loss of power steering and may have resulted in an accident.please provide further information.

1997 dodge stratus 2.0 sohc motor, blown head gasket, broken power steering pump, egr valve stopped working, leaks alot of oil out of camshaft position sensor, heater core ruptured, heater hose ruptured also, oil pressure sending unit stopped working .

Both the right and left side lower control arm and ball joint assemblies had to be replaced. This problem was addressed by recall #750. The repair work was performed at the dealer and paid for before consumerwas advised of the recall. I have attempted to obtain reimbursement for the $633.00 cost and the $49.95 plus 8% sales tax with no luck.request was denied for the reason that "although the recalled parts failed they didn't fail for the recall reason." consumerwas also not given the old parts for an independent inspection. Daimler chrysler denied reimbursement stating that this case fell into general maintenance.

Consumer's vehicle experienced the same problem as mentioned in recall 97v201000 concerning left control arm.consumer heard a clicking noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. Tookvehicle to the dealer. However, the dealer did not want to do the repairs at their expense.

Dealership has no parts for lower control arm after being notified by owner of recall 97v201000.

Recall work on the lower control arm denied to consumer from dealership.

The lower control arms and ball joints were replaced due to corrosion, however upon leaving dealership, consumer was informed by a service manager that part was under recall(#750) the service manage advised consumer to request reimbursement from chrysler, consumer contacted chrysler and was informed that the part was know to be defective and to send in all documentation, consumer then received a letter stating that he had not met the required conditions of the recall, consumer states he complied the with control arms inspection per recall on dec 15, 1998 but at that time there was no immediate problem.

The dealership is providing incorrect information about the recall for the lower control arm 97 v 201 000. The dealership is indicating that if they repair the control arm as stated in the recall, it will cause damage to the sway bar. There also some discrepancy about whether or not the vin is part within the remedy scope.*phthe vehicle's ball joints were replaced at the consumer's expense.the consumer request reimbursement.*nlm

After the recall regarding the lower ball joint was repaired, it then failed. Recall # 97 v 201 000.

When turning the tires make a noise due to premature wearof the upper ball joints.

When air gets into the gas tank it sets the engine checklight on/off due to the cap being loose. Dealer has been contacted.

The head gasket failed resulting in oil leakage, the oil indicator never worked properly.*mjs

Blown head gasket at 69,900 miles.leaked oil, never overheated. Possible cracked head.

Vehicle was going 50mph when the oil light illuminated and vehicle stalled. Imternittentlyvehicle will restart. This was second time that vehicle has stalled. Also, vehicle is leaking oil caused by time belt problems.please probide more information.

Consumer started to notice oil onground, andoil gauge went down to gauges.

Carpeted floor mat got caught in cotter pin in bottom of steering column while turning in a parking lot.

Riding down the road when my "engine check light" came on, i took it to the service department and they said it was my gas cap. I changed my gas cap and the same problem has occurred four times. Each time i have taken to a dodge dealership service department. They fixed the problem and a day later the "engine check light" comes back on. The last time i took it in for the same problem the service manager said that they can't do anything about it but it is safe to drive. The "engine check light" is still on till this day and it has gone off yet.

Battery light came on and stayed on while driving, the dealer was contacted and appointment was scheduled. While driving car 13 miles for repairs, 50-55 mph, the engine light came, on and the engine caught on fire. Fire department came. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Someone i worked with has the same car (year/model) and had the same problem. I will be investigating this on my ouw as well and contacting dodge directly. No safety defect listed.

While driving oil light came on and vehicle stalled losing all power.took vehicleto dealer, and dealer replaced timing belt and pulley. Timing belt has been replaced twice.also had computer replaced.

Tachometer stops working and returns to 0 rpm at same time odometer light goes out.stays that way for periods of one minute to 30 minutes.then both start working again, with no loss of miles being recorded.checked fuses and ground wires, seem to be ok.dealer wants $400+ to check problem.not safety problem, just inconvenient.

Rust and paint bubbling on front of hood. I have observed that this is epidemic on stratus.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus.while driving approximately 45-50 mph on normal road conditions, the cruise control was activated.when the contact depressed the brake pedal, the cruise control failed to deactivate.he made several attempts to disengage the cruise control mechanism, but was unsuccessful.the gear shifter was placed into neutral and the vehicle suddenly began to slow down; however, the engine revved highly.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure occurred whenever the cruise control was activated and the vehicle was in motion.the failure mileage was 150,000 and current mileage was 175,000.

When starting the vehicle up and putting it into reverse the vehicle accelerated and hit a wall. Dealer has vehicle.

Whenever consumer is drivingon highway at 50-70 mph with cruise control engaged and the vehicleapproaching a down hill slope, the vehicle would accelerate to 4000 rpm, but the speed would remain the same. Consumer would commence todisengage cruise control with button, which failed to deactivate. Applied brake pedal which deactivated cruise control. Vehicle been in/out dealer shop on three occasions, and informed that nothing could be found. *ml

The problem actually started in december of 1997, it had around 50,000 miles.the vehicle is sluggish while in drive and will stall at any given moment.we had the map & throttle sensor replaced at that time.we have had recurrent problems with the sensors since then, until this past may when we replaced them for a second time.the vehicle still stalled during normal driving conditions.upon further inspection we found the head gasket was cracked.we once again proceeded with the recommended repairs.unfortunately the problem still remains.the check engine light reflects there is a problem, however the diagnostic continually notes the problem is with the sensors.we have been told by the mechanic that this is a common problem with the dodge stratus, yet dodge is reluctant to recall the part(s) involved.for example, three other dodge stratus/plymouth breeze vehicles were brought in to the same repair shop during the same week our stratus was being repaired.we continue to have problems with the vehicle stalling at the most in opportune times ( in the middle of left hand turns in busy intersections, etc...

While approaching a major intersection i attempted to slow down, i removed my foot from the gas and pushed on the brake, instead of the car slowing the engine began to race and the car surged forward.at first i thought i may have my foot on the gas so i completly removed my foot, the car continued to speed up at a very fast rate.just as the car was entering the intersection i slammed back on the brakes, but was only able to slow the car. It continued toward the intersection.once in the intersection, the only thing that saved myself and my wife from being killed was that the traffic was light enough to go around us.after approx 20 to 30 seconds the engine went back to normal i put the car in reverse to get out of the intersection.i took the car right to the dealer and chylsler has been notified.my wife refuses to get back into the car and i do not believe it is safe for my family, this could happen again and i may not be as lucky next time.i expect chrysler to give me the run around , please help.

Cruise control was engaged, consumer applied force to the brake pedal, cruise control was disengaged, the engine statred racing.the vehicle then jumped forward, causing the consumer to have a near accident. Please provide further details.

Vehicle suddenly accelerated after being shifted from park to drive, resulting in an accident.

Throttle body service.

While backing out of parking space vehicle suddenly accelerated. Hit another vehicle & a wall. Had foot on brakes in beginning. When foot came off of brakes, that was when vehicle accelerated. Will be taking vehicle to dealer.

Cruise control, which was not being used at the time and which was not operable [had not been working prior to the accident] suddenly and without prior warning caused the car to accelerate as if the accelerator pedal were floorboarded.driver avoided other traffic but ended up in a field. Car was totaled.inspection of the circuit board inside the cruise control servo unit was found to be faulty.

When the car was put into reverse the engine raced, with my foot still on the brake the car was propelled backwards at a high rate of speed.the rpm gadge registered 8,000. I quickly put the car into park,it heisitated then the car was propelledus forward at a high rate of speed for about thirty feet on our driveway, unable to stop, having the brakes lock, the car crashed into my other parked car and the porch of my house. Finally after the stratus pushed the other car ten feet towards the road ,my husband was able to pull the keys out of the car.my daughter received a slight concussion.a police report was filed.by the grace of god this didn't happen at my daughter school fair to which we were on our way. Chryler was notified concerning their product defect.a gentlemen representing them has investigated, we are awaiting his findings.please mke sure to check the throttle sensor, your life depends on it!

Vehicle lunged forward out of control and caused accident.

When vehicle is put in drive it will surge forward, and it will be hard to stop.surging caused an accident.the airbags deployed burning the driver's arms and hands.driver was taken to hospital and treated for a broken nose.the surging happended twice before the accident.

Either the oil light or cruise light will come on and car loses all power. I have to pull off road and put car in park turn it off and sometimes it will just start right back and sometimes i have to wait for about 30 mins for it to start back. I have only had the car since march of 2013 and it has done this 10-12 times since then. I almost got rear ended a few times cause with no power it is hard to get car off the road. I have contacted dodge but there is no recall for this problem yet.

Throttle body service.

Vehicle suddenly took off in reverse when the shifter was in park position, rusulting in crash and property damage.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus.while driving 70 mph the cruise control failed to engage when activated.the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure.the current mileage was 128,000 and the failure mileage was 105,000.the vin appeared to be invalid.

The heater will only blow out on high speed and the ventilation system is not working properly as it shows on the dial.

1997 dodge stratus 2.0 sohc motor, blown head gasket, broken power steering pump, egr valve stopped working, leaks alot of oil out of camshaft position sensor, heater core ruptured, heater hose ruptured also, oil pressure sending unit stopped working .

While having the heater core repaireddealership indicated that head gasket was leaking oil into the cooling system and onto the ground. Thiswas a common failure with this vehicle, and there were numerous complaints listed on this issue.

The vehicle caught on fire .the fire was emitting from the engine compartment and wheel well areas. *sc

When replacing the battery they have to take off the tire as it is an anti-theft.the problem is the lugs: nuts break off very easily.has there been any similar compliants?i'm facing a large bill and do not feel i should be.please advise.thanks.
