On week of 10/18/99 called to make an appointment to have a tune-up done on vehicle. I was informed that they do not do tune-ups on vehicles with as low mileage as mine. But they would replace the fuel filter, change the oil, replace the throttle body, flushed the radiator and did a 26 point check. The charge came to $272.55. The following week my husband and i both experienced problems with the vehicle chugging and acting like it was going to die. Sometimes, while driving it would quit for a few seconds and then start back up again. So, my husband called roberson motors back and reported the problem to them. Candy bull quoted that it could cost from $200 to $450 to repair. I took the car to them on 11/9/1999 with a quarter of a tank of gas. They called me back at the end of the day to tell me the gas tank was empty and that this made them miss the allotted time for my car. They would need to schedule another appointment. We left the car there overnight. The next day candy called to tell me that the car had been over-fueling. I asked what causes this? her statement was that it just happens. After i got frustrated and told her that i could probably understand if she would explain in detail to me because i am familiar with how cars operate, she finally explained that the tubes for the spark plugs were too large allowing oil and fuel to mix up around the spark plugs. She stated that the spark plugs were soaked with oil. I asked if this was a manufacturers defect and she said "no, it just happens, we have noticed it in the dodge caravans but not in the stratus'". I told her this appears to be a very dangerous situation. I have a two-year old daughter that quite frequently rides in my car. What if it had caught on fire? i also asked if it was because of the age of the vehicle or how we were driving it. Her answer was "no". She stated that "it just happens".on 11/10/99, i went to pick the vehicle up and was charged $355.

I have taken the car in at least 2 other times for this problem and am going to take it in this thursday (10/21/99) again for the same buzzing noise. Each time i take it in it is there for a minimum of 2 days if not longer. I am concerned for the safety of my family due to the steering column noise. This thursday i will also take it in for some type of electrical failure - the car will sometimes not start on me.

My name is [xxx], and i am a twenty-four year old father of three who is currently receiving social security. I am writing this letter today because i am having some problems with my 1996 dodge stratus (vin# [xxx]). The types of problems that i am having consists of air conditioning leaks, electrical circuits that malfunction, transmission troubles, premature brake wear, head gasket problems, and poor driveability. Chrysler motor corporation prides itself as representing value, quality, durability and reliability, but i cant seem to see that as a true statement with all of my current problems. I could not believe all the problems that i am having with this vehicle at one given time so i decided to research my difficulties on the internet and i found that i am not the only one with these same issues. I feel that daimlerchrysler corp should be held responsible for my repairs due to circumstances caused byshoddyparts and quality. So far i have replaced the timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, water pump, alternator, alternator belt, rotors, bake shoes, rear wheel cylinders, pcv valve, dryer, ac compressor, tires, all filters, and fluids.i am in dyer need of a exhaust manifold, windshield, struts, shocks, steering wheel, head gasket. Also, i am experiencing steering wheel oscillation/vibration above 50 mph, rough ride on road with irregular surface & bottoming out on pothole, erratic idle, performance loss, overheats in traffic &/or a/c becomes inoperative,warm-up sag, hesitation & driveway die out, rear grid defogger indicator light malfunctions, insidelights work improperly, erratic, late or harsh automatic transmission shifts , frequency rumble or gear noise from front between 50 & 70 mph , musty odor and defroster fails to clear glass. As it appears i need a lot of work and being low income i need help.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

During the end of summer my car engine repeatedly shut off while driving at normal speeds (usually @20 - 40mph).i brought my car to the dealer because my car repeatedly shuts off when i turn corners or driving at low speeds of 30 or less it will just shut off in the middle of traffic.i have my 3 children in the car with me most of the time and we have faced many close accidents!once the car's rpm shuts down the car shuts off no matter where i am.when i drive 50mph or more my car jerks.my car also accelerates while drive 40mph or less on its own in several instances i almost hit cars in front of me during red lights.my abs light stays on all the time. I brought it to the dealer and they told me they didn't know why it was on and that it would cost $70.00 an hour for a computerized checkup which i can not afford.another time i brought my car to the dealer for the engine shutoff problem they told me they couldn't find the problem and assumed the throttle bottle was the cause. Westminister dodge cleaned the throttle bottle and my car still continues to shutoff since summer of 2001.my air brake failed me in 9/2001, i ended up unable to stop my car from knocking off a wheel cover of a mitsubishi 4 door.my car shutoff when i tried to stop the car to avoid hitting the mitsubishi and my front end of my car (license plate nose) took off her wheelcover in which i offered to replace for $40.00. I am very afraid of what will happen next since the dealer can't find the problem.my newest problem as of 1/14/2002 is my steering wheel columm.i don't feel like i have full control of my car it kind of rides all over the rode. I don't know how much longer it will be before i get in a major accident because of unfixable car failure! i can't afford another car or trade in.

I purchased my 1996 dodge stratus in the summer of 1996 and so far i have had nothing but trouble with this vehicle, one head gasket repair through the dealership at a cost of $1600, one timing chain replacement at a cost of $600 and now again another head gasket leak. In the year 2000 this car sat in the garage for a total of 11 months due to not having the money to fix the head gasket problem which caused a severe financial and a mentally frustrating time during those months without a car. I would like to be included in the class action lawsuit against chrysler so please forward me any information needed in going forward with this lawsuit.

Head gaskets cracked, causing oil to leak onto the motor.the dealer has been notified.

Oil leak from cylinder head gasket area and rear camshaft sensor seal was detected.i am lodging a complaint because upon searching complaints site of ntsa, i have found that there are more than just a few complaints.i originally took the vehicle to a repair shop other than a dodge dealer and was told at that time that the problem with the head gasket is "common" among the stratus.my search on the internet confirmed the statement.i just paid over $1000 in repair bills because of this problem.i noticed that there was a recall of 1996 stratuses due to a similar problem before my car was made.was the problem really solved with the earlier manufactured dates?my fear is that this problem will come up again in an "unsafe situation" and the lives of my children and myself will be jeopardized.this complaint may be taken lightly by the manufacturer but the problem with the head gasket troubles me a lot because there have been quite a few complaints about this problem.i hope they are not waiting for another disaster similar to "ford and the pinto" before they do something about the problem.

There was a recall on the timing belt/tensioner, my car was built outside of the build date for recall. Chrysler has changed the parts for the gaskets several times, they know this problem exists, but they will not provide any assistance with it. Sounds like a class action suit is in order!

This vehicle was purchased in february of 1996. Since the date of purchase the headgasket on the vehicle has been replaced twice and is currently undergoing a third replacement. The first headgasket replacement was at the cost of the customer, the second at the cost of the dealer under a service bulletin agreement. The third replacement cost was turned down by daimler chrysler but the local dealer offered a discount on labor to the customer for customers repeated business reasons. The head gasket should have never failed a third time after production and installation of the newly designed headgasket for the chrysler vehicles. Customer requests full compensation for first headgasket replacement and third replacement per faulty design by daimler chysler.

Letter sent by dodge stating they found no problems, refuses to release full report claiming propriatory info. Consumer again had to pay for full cost of repair, new trans. $ 1,700.

One of the oil galley plugs on the 2.4l engine of our daughter's 1996 dodge stratus came out, and the car spewed most of its oil out into the engine compartment.chrysler had a recall (#671) on these back in 1995 as several fires occurred.our vin fell within the range of vins affected, but we were told it was not part of the recall.the recall ended with cars manufactured oct. 13, 1995 and our car (we were told) was manufactured oct. 14th.the fix as of that date was a change to the cylinder head machining and the plug thickness.obviously, either our engine is one from before the change was fully implemented, or the change was not a cure all, as the plug on ours came out.their solution for affected engines was a bracket that bolts on to retain the plugs, but no one at the 1-800 number nor at the dealership could tell me if it would fit or work on our engine with the supposed machining changes.parts and labor will likely be only around $100, but they will not cover the repair even with the proximity of recall date to our manufacture date, the fact that our car had the same problem as cars that were recalled, and this being a safety issue.hope they are 100% correct that our car should not have been included in the recall, seems like a risk on their part to not cover this.

Oil leakages while driving, vehicle taken to dealer and informed of a blown head gasket. Feel free to provide any further information.

Defective enginehead gasketleaked oil which may cause a fire.common problem.please provide further information.

Major oil leak on the driver side near the firewall.dealer diagnosed a head gasket failure, allowing oil to pump out of the engine near the exhaust manifold.recommended fixing to avoid fire, but would not offer any help.reviewed up to customer rel. Mgr. At zone office, said due to mileage, no assistance would be offered.this seems too low a mileage for the engine to be self destructing when other brands run 200k and more miles with no trouble.

It is leaking oil from head gasket. When i went to the dealership to see what was wrong he inform me that they have had a lot of problems with this model and he has had to replace several head gasket from others. He also stated that he believes it is a design problem and the maker should recall the car. It is also going to cost over $800.00 to repair.

While driving the faulty bearings in the pulley, caused the timing belt to melt through the timing cover. Dealer has been contacted.

Cylinder head gasket failed at approximately 48,000 miles. Car is driving fine but leaking about two quarts of oil per day. Head gaskets should not fail at such low mileage. I also have reason to believe that this is a very common problem on 1995-1999 dodge stratus, dodge neon, and plymouth breeze.

The head gasket leaked oil onto the exhaust manifold.*ph

Iown a 96 dodge stratus,i purchased it year of 97. I received numerous recalls on this vechicle since the day of purchased. I followed up on each recall that i received. As time went on i had numerous problems with this vehicle. Over the years iaways believe in chrysler products to be safe and sound.i feel that it's been truly unfair too loyal consumers such as myself many others.i don't understand why a company such as chrysler and engineers would engineered a product like the dodge stratus with so many defects. On saturday november 5, 2005i went to pay a bill about five to ten miles away from home. Return home, park the car, lock the doors went into my apartment.about ten minutes later a neighborhood boy knock on my door and said your gold car is on fire. I ran outside to see, yes it was my car on fire!fire was coming from underneath the hood. I called the fire department, they arrive about ten minutes later to put the fire out. The fireman had to break the hood latch to get into the engine area to put out the fire. The fire destroy my motor and hood.thank god myself or my kids wasn't in the car! i'm truly sadden that this have to happen to me and my family i'm single parent with no transportation.after the investigation of the cause of fire it was determine that the oil gallery plug was faulty. My insurance coverage wouldn't coverage it.

Just paid 790.42 for head gasket repair on april 11, 2000 nad work is still not solving problem. It stalled on me 3 times in traffic and still leaks oil. A recall needs to be placed or vehicle replaced. Im sick to my stomach over this and will never buy another chrysler or dodge automobile again.

Severe oil leak. Dealer diagnosed as head gasket failure, but wants to charge me for repairs. Leaking 1-2 quarts per 250 miles.

Currently own a 1996 dodge stratus 4 cylinder, and it is sitting in my driveway and i am unable to use it, as the head gasket blew out of it, and will cost over $1500 do replace(and so i hear even if you do replace it, the head gasket will blow again shortly after due to the improper design of the engine)..this is so well known a problem, and i am disgusted to think that with our family being lifetime dodge/chrysler people, the company would ignore safety and allow this problem to continue in later models. What is it going to take to get some help here!!!!i am a poor mom of two children, one disabled, and thought that i was makng a good purchase with the stratus. I currently cannot afford to have the vehicle fixed, and have been unable to get my disabled child to the doctor as i do not have reliable transportation......this is pathetic!please someone help!

While driving, my car stopped in the middle of a busy road. The timing belt had brokenn.it took the dealer 3 weeks to fix it.with the head gasket, i brought the car to a service station 3 separate times to find out why it was running hot, before the problem was discovered. This happened only when the car leaked out all of the antifreeze. I have also replaced the front brakes 4 times and the rear brakes 3 times in this vehicle. I have never had to do this with any other car that i have owned.

I have been told by the dealer that they are having a great deal of engines of my typ come in for there head gasket. I was also told that dodge was recalling and paying for the repair for a while but stopped. This car started leaking a very small amount of oil before the warrenty went out but i didn't think it was very serious at the time so i did nothing. Now it is up to 2 qt a week now and will cost me over $800.00 to repair.

While in motion, the vehicle's passenger compartment began to fill with smoke and the warning lights began to flash.while trying to come to a stop, consumer found that the brakes and power steering were inoperable. Consumer was able to stop the vehicle before the fire began in the engine compartment.*jg

Dealer was contacted multiple times during warranty of oil usage, even though they were aware of head gasket problem with these 2.4l engines they did not fix the problem. Head gasket is now leaking oil all over the place.this should be covered under a recall with the number of problems they are having including the fire potential and environmental impact.

Engine head gasket is leaking oil onto the engine manifold which could cause a fire. Gasket is on backorder for over a month.

While driving at 55 mph through lassen county park in california, the head gasket blew internally and i lost all power, ultimately the vehicle seized. The check engine light failed to give me any notice that there was a problem with the vehicle, my first notice was the vechile actually losing all power. During the initial seize up, a full size chevy pick up was behind me and quickly came up on me as i quickly lost power and slowed down.i attempted to pull the vehicle to the side of the road and the chevy was inches from hitting my left rear quarter panel. (at this moment i was terrified, i've never had this type of vehicle problem!).after i had the vehicle towed to a mechanic shop, i was told that due to the head gasket blowing interally it caused the rodbearings to spin. I ultimately had to have the rods, rodbearings, headgasket, oil filter, oil pan pickup, timing belts, injection seals, oil pan, air filter, pcv valve, thermostate, egr valve gasket, egr tube, cv shaft, sparkplugs, fuel filter replaced for a total of $925.38.i also had to have machine work done on the bottom end of motor for a total of $1,000. A grand total of almost $2,000!

Oil leak, dealer confirmed head gasket, said chrysler knows of problem and offering to cover with a $100 deductible, plus i have to pay them for a rental car.then the cam sensor goes out, another $185.00 to dealer.i feel the failure of the head gasket and oil leak could have caused the cam sensor to go out.3 weeks prior they had performed a recal on the pcm module, which is connected to the cam sensor.they are saying totally unrelated.

In oct 1999, head gasket was replaced at 35900 miles. Went back 2 weeks later complaining of oil still leaking on my driveway. They tightened one valve cover bolt which was loose.in february, 2000, with 39500 miles, complaining that the vehicle still has an oil leak. They used an engine dye to try to detect source of leak.they test drove the car, let it run for a few hours, and could not detect any leaks. So i lived with slight oil leaks, which recently got worse, but did not notice immediately because my driveway is loaded with spots. While driving on the expressway, the head gasket blew.construction barriers were lined up alongside the expressway.it was difficult to pull off to the side because of these barriers. This presented a real hazard.i feel it is important for a recall of dodge stratus 1995-1998 head gaskets to be implemented.(as well as other models which use this same type of head gasket.)head gaskets should be good for at least the typical life of a car. That is a very costly item.it already has happened twice, and i only have 50000 miles on my car. I know i will never buy another dodge in my lifetime. My dealer has given me horrible service on numerous occasions. It was never a pleasure to get my car serviced.

A loss of oil while driving.dealer was notified, and informed of a head gasket failure. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.

Engine head gasket failed twice in 40k miles. Fear fire may start.

This is the second time that my 1996 dodge stratus has experienced head gasket failure and a cam seal leak.the first time,my vehicle was still under warranty.for this to happen twice on a car that not even five years old and with less than 50,000 miles on it is odd.i wondered if other consumers had the same problem and therefore decide to contact you in case this is a widespread problem so that there may be a recall.i would hope that i am the only one.i have all my repair receits if that will aid in the investigation,if there is any.thank you for your time.

Discovered at 33k miles on car.leak isolated down to head gasket.head gasket replaced at no charge( under warranty).noted other individuals with similar failures in the same product line.dealer mentioned to me that there is a know deficiency in the head gaskets that were installed in these vehicles.recommend chrysler investigate and determine need for recall.not sure whether this is a potential fire hazard or not , but leaking oil is a safety hazard to the environment.

Reported a oil leak to dealer and had inspected by them, was told it was a head gasket, informed dealer to go ahead and fix but was told they cannot get parts.called chrysler corp. Informed them of trouble and they said they don't have part, they are having vendor problems.asked when a possible solution would be available, none given.voiced concern that oil was leaking on hot exhaust, told by them that it wasn't a problem.when i asked for another way to resolve was told there was no other avenues, asked about fileing complaint with you they said they "wouldn't advise it"

I went to get an oil change.i was informed that i had an oil leak.i than went to my local garage to make an appointtment.i than discovered that it was leaking due to the head gasket.this also means that the timing belt needs to be done.i called peter kotch (where i purchased the car)and was informed that i did not purchase additional coverage and they could not help.i than called the chrysler corp 800 number.i talked with a represenative about the problem.he stated that they could not help.but, he did inform me of several safty recalls for the car.i have since went searching into the web sights for recalls.there was a recall 1/97 for a timing belt problem.i was wondering if this could be something that couldbe causing the problems i have now.i am not sure if this one was taken care of before i purchased the car.i just do not believe that a car of only 2 years and 66093 miles should need this type of expense.all the work that is needed is costing me 937.00 estimate.

My 1996 dodge stratus has 37,000 miles. In february2002 i took it to sears for an oil change. Also asking them to see where oil was leaking (noticed oil on concrete in garage). They said valve cover gasket so i got that fixed for about $72.00all along thinking that there were not that many miles driven. And to bad the warranty had just expired. I think it was 5 years or 25,000 miles. Within the next 2 months oil was leaking again. Took it in and end up paying $702.00 because the head gasket was bad. The mechanic showed it to me and jokingly said isn't it funny how this can be so cheap that it almost was deteriorated and the warranty 5yrs is up. Even though i had not drove 25,000 miles yet. Well the final blow , on oct 10,2002 i kept hearing a clunk when i made left or right turn. Took it to therhoden dodge. We were told that right & left tie rod ends were loose & sway bar links worn & loose(2 tie rods,& 2 ball joints) i asked them to perform an alignment and transmission flush ,totaling $779.00 because what else will break. Well in jan. 2003 the brakes were on medal another $190.00. I'm afraid to take it in to the garage. There is only37,000 miles driven and i am hearing another noise when i turn left and right. When the brakes were fixed they told me they test drove it and heard nothing . Some how it seems that 5 yrs or 25,000 miles is telling me that i should have sold it before that because i think the company knew things would start happening. Is there anything you can do to help me. Please, this car is a lemon with only 37,000 miles.

In both reported problems (head gasket and cam seal) nearly all of the engine oil in the vehicle leaked onto other parts of the engine/road or the garage floor.the cam seal problems occurred while the automobile was still under warranty.the enginehead gasket did not.dealer said they would try to get chrysler to help out with repair of the head gasket.

Oil leak cause by defective engine head gasket.not enough mile on the car for it to become disabled.

We contacted chrysler last month regarding the leaking engine head gasket on our 1996 dodge stratus with 57003 miles. We were toldthere were no problems reported about leaking head gaskets. But, take it to a dealership and they may or may not cover the replacement. The dealership told us it would cost $100 or so to just check it out. Even though they knew it was the head gasket. Because of our finanicial status, we chose to apply the $100 to our mechanic to actually fix the problem. It took the mehcanic 3 weeks to get the part because it was on back order. Imagine that, no problems reported and still the part was on back order. It took 3 days to fix. Our mechanic told us that he talked to another mechanic at the chrysler dealership. He said they were replacing about 2 a week. Also that chrysler was paying for either all of it or parts. I called chrysler back and tried to talk with them. I even got more irate than i should have. They told me they would not help us because we chose not to get it fixed at the dealership. This leaky head gasket was not a recall. Were we required to pay an extra $100 just so they could say "yes" it is the head gasket in order for them to then say "no" we are not covering it? understand my position, all i want reembursed for is the head gasket itself which was $136.30. Because it was not a recall, why couldn't i take it to my mechanic? my mechanic charges $24/hr labor compared to the $54/hr the dealership charges. Does it matter who installs it when it is not a recall? also, my mechanic said the replacement part was the same identical one that was taken out. In conclusion, why should i be penalized for savingextra money when it is chrsyler fault for the defected part? all i ask for is the price of the head gasket$136.30. Thank you.

Severe oil leak on backside of engine near exhaust manifold.was told it was not the recalled oil galley plug in the head but the head gasket was bad.had to have head gasket replaced, cam seals, cam sensor and various other gaskets.was told by another chrysler dealer that this was a known problem that these engines dump oil, but chrysler does not want to take responsibility for it.one dealer said they have replaced 7 in the past 2 weeks, a goodyear shop told us that they saw 5 in one week that had come in for other reasons and they had to send them to the dealer. There are numerous complaints on the internet about this.we had to pay to have this replaced and chrysler should be responsible.head gaskets do not just go bad on new cars.to put the final nail in our coffin.the dealer (jack caruso regency dodge in jacksonville florida) that replaced this gasket, put our engine back together wrong.we were driving and the car lost power and we smelled fuel.the fuel line to the engine was loose and spraying oil everywhere, the groundstrap was arching with the spark plug wire at the distributor. We had the car towed to a different dodge dealer as we were on vacation.the dealer said we came very close to losing our lives, another few seconds and the car would have exploded.they said "whoever put this engine back together did a ?!@#$% job and did not know what they were doing"the fuel line was bent and the seal cracked, the vacuum lines werenot routed correctly, brackets were loose on hoses and parts loose on the back of the engine.after we paid again to have this fixed, we brought the car to our dealer who screwed up and they deny everything and are not of any help.we are out a lot of money, but at least it is only money, we came very close to losing the lives of 4 people.this is uncalled for!

Informed of head gasket leaking oil while it was in for one of the many recalls on this car. At the time the oil leak was not noticeable under the car, but since then has become increasingly worse. This could easily cause a fire on my car as well as any of the numerous other cars i have read complaints about. If this problem is as wide spread as number of complaints indicate the manufacturer should be responsible for this problem and not me.

Head gasket failure at rear driver's side of engine. Have read of many other failures, must be a common problem. Have read of a "secret warranty" where chrysler will fix for $100 (constant complaining required). Obviously chrysler knows of a problem, but will not admit one. I have taken my vehicle in for the head gasket to be replaced 4 times now. I am taking it in again for the 5th time for the same problem. All the dealer keeps doing is putting another head gasket on and charging me my $50 deductable. This is getting very tiring. My brakes went out completely in 1997 after the factory re-call had been preformed. I was informed that the mechanic had put the seal in wrong. The last time i took my vehicle in for the head gasket, number 4, the dealer found that the cv boot needed replaced. Durring the repair the axel just fell apart. Same time the transmission pump needed replaced the fuel sending unit needed replaced and the head gasket was replaced. And it still leaks from the same spot the rear left of the engine.

Vehicle experienced two head gasket failures;first occurred at 37,000 miles. Both replacements were done by two different dealers, and head gaskets still leaking. Please feel free to provide any further details.

On 12/18/1997 i purchased a 1996 dodge stratus at a buy here pay here lot that went out of business. Within 6 months of owning the vehicle i was backing out of a sloped driveway.i felt a bump and kept driving.before i could reach the end of the street my oil lamp came on.i stopped at the gas station check the oil and discovered i needed oil.i put oil in the car andgot on the interstate.my car all of a sudden stopped pulling.after the car was towed to the shop the dealership informed me that the oil pan had a hole in it and most likely got it during the bump.i had to get a new motor for the car which a $500 deductible had to be paid by me and the other $3600 was paid by allstate(my insurance company).last year in late april the same thing happened again and the car hasn't been repaired since or of course driven.the second time the car started smoking and someone called the fire department.i then had the car towed home.

I bought a 1996 dodge stratus in february 1997.it had 16,000miles on it and is considered used.due to numerous electrical problems i purchased an extended warranty through my credit union to protect myself from ongoing repairs.since that warranty has taken effect, they have spent approximately $3,500.00 on repairing my vehicle.a majority of this repair was a continous oil leak.i have taken my car to kernersville dodge at least 6 times since may, 1999 to have this oil leak repaired, with no luck.they have reportedly replaced the gaskets twice, the cylinder head once(which they told me was faulty from the beginning), and the seals twice to stop this leak.unfortunately they were not successful.although most of these repairs were paid for by my extended warranty, i still had expense of my own, not to mention the inconvenience of them keeping my car for a week at a time only to not repair my car.i feel they have not made adequate effort and have a begun a letter to the chrysler company.however, i do not expect much success or cooperation from them.my car is now at a private shop who have told me the head gaskets will need to be replaced.i was told by the mechanic that they were patching the leak instead of repairing however i was being charged for the replacement of parts.why does it cost $3500.00 to patch a leak?i hope that by writing to you, i will get some solution to this very frustrating and ongoing dilemna.i have all paperwork from repairs done on my car if copies are needed.thank you for your time.

Two complaints: first - never received a recall notice # 671 issued on 4/1996 of which this vehicle should have been included (built through 10/13/1995) this car was built on 10/13/1995. At state inspection this past march noticed it was starting to leak oil and now is leaking about 2 to 3 qts a week(10/6/2001).went to dealer & asked about recall they contacted cryslerand were told to check if galley plugs were the cause. Dealer checked and saidthe head gasket was leaking badly. Contacted chrysler today and said they will get back to me. Went to your consumer complaints listing and found that of 287 complaints filed under the engine catagory 217 or 76% were for oil leaks or head gasket blown!under engine gasket covers 124 records all 100% were for oil leaks. Safetyhazard of fire is quite possible why isn't the manufacturer required to do a recall? from what i have heard this is quite a problem with all status's through model year 2000. Thank you.

The vehicle has a history of stalling while driving, and more frequently of not starting on occasion regardless as to whether itsat overnight or only a few minutes.three visits to either jay chevrolet or al serra dodge, has resulted in only the timing chain being fixed.however thissolved only the original stall, but has not solved the problem completely, and no other solution has been offered.on second trip to dealer, the car would not start while on the tow truck, but did start later when service tried it.they just kept sending the car back with no solution to the problem.i have two children driving this car, and do not appreciate them being stranded.this is a potentially dangerous sitution for my children to be in and no one seems to care.

I am very unsatisfied with the dodge stratus.i think it is absolutely ridiculous that i have to pay $610 out of my pocket for a part that the chrysler mechanics themselves admit to be a common failure.i think chrysler should stand behind their product a little more and replace the defective gasket which seems to be defective on all the stratus and neon's of people whom i know.

The vehicle was inspected at cerritos dodge, 18827 studebaker road, cerritos, california 90703, phone 562-402-5335, service 562-924-8275.i was informed that my engine head gasket was "blown" and leaking "badly" over the exhaust manifold which is a fire hazard in the engine compartment.i was also informed that the designed in haed gasket from dodge was inappropriate for the application, and that the replacement gasket was appropriatelly thicker with metal lining as should have been done in the first place.i feel that since this is a design flaw and fire hazard, the 1996 dodge stratus with this problem should be recalled by the manufacturer.the estimated cost for part replacement and additional service needed after this procedure is estimated to be $750 to $1000.

Oil leak on engine has been continous since i purchased the car.

I have had to replace the brake pads/ rotors twice and seem to continuously need "belts and tune ups".i am thoroughly upset that my first car purchase turned out to be a piece of crap and nothing but trouble.if they will not fix this "covered" repair, they will see me in court.no safety defect listed in summary.

We were driving on i-69 in tulsa, ok on september 5, 1999, travelling about 75 mph in the left lane of traffic when the car suddenly and without warning downshifted into second gear.fortunately, the traffic was light on the highway and we were able to get offwithout incident. At that time, we had no idea what it had done and were perplexed - was it the transmission?tire blow out?the car continued to run however but would not let us shift out of second gear.we read our owner's manual and learned that what happened was a "safety feature" when the computer detects something wrong, the car will automatically "downshift" so no additional damage, etc. Will be caused!we also noted to shut off the car and restart it and it would re-set but hte check engine light would stay on.we took it first to the dealership the next business day (tuesday) and they started mumbling about the transmission needing replaced without even a diagnostic check!we then took it to tuneup masters who did a check and found no codes, nothing wrong.another year has passed and my check engine light came on again but not while travelling at high speed.a code was noted this time for the transmission.i am getting rid of this car.bad things are getting ready to happen and i can't afford it.my concern, however, is this "safety feature" of downshifting at high speeds.i will not sell it privately as i am concerned a family will buy it and something awful may happen.i know, "buyer beware" but it seems dangerous to me.i just wondered if anyone else has encountered this problem with the computer and/or engine?i have kept up on my oil changes, etc., new brakes, new tires, but it just seems to do this randomly and without warning and then the car runs fine after it is re-set.thank you for your attention to this report.

I have a 1996 dodge stratus (71,000 miles) with a severe oil leak from the head gasket.it is a 2.4l engine and like all others if has failed.chrystler knows they have a poor product and a failure of a design, but they do not want to take any responsibility for their mistake.this car has been driven very little, mostly to school to drop off the kids and to the local stores.a car with less than 9,000 miles a year on it should not have a $1000.00 repair to such a major part.the chrystler corporation should repair all 2.4l engines at their cost because it isterrible engine.i will never buy another chrystler product and i will attempt to ersuade everyone i know from making the mistake i made !

The transmission started leaking oil from the front seal of the tranny.i took the car into a dodge dealership's garage in england (where i live working for the united states air force) and they told me that the front seal needed to be changed and that i had to pay for parts (the seal) and labor.then when the car was ready to pick up they informed me thatchrysler was payingfor parts, incuding a new pump that thaey felt needed to be changed out and i would pay for the labor. I paid 195.00 pounds wich is equivelant to around 350.00 dollars.when i tok the car from the garage i noticed a strange noise comming from the front left tire.so i took it back and they rudley took my car and went around the block to see what was the matter.when he came back the car was fixed.so i drove it home and on the way thier the tranny was slipping and almost burnt out.i checked the fluid and there was none in there.i called the garage and told them that it was leaking again.so i filled it back up and took the car back to them.they then preeceded to tell me that the tranny neede to be replaced that the torque converter was bent.i was quite upset because i would of never had to pay for the first time if they has road tested the vehical in the first place.so i left them the car agian.this happened on thevery next day.about a month later i recieved the car back.two days after recieving the car the tranny got stuck in low gear.i took the car back again and they told me it was the tranny's compt. The car had been involved in a minor accident. Now my other stratus has developed a transmission leak. Same problem!! i have to believe there is a manufacter defect!!

Vehicle was leaking oil, and consumer tookvehicleto an independent mechanic. Mechanic stated that head gasket was cracked.problem was remedied bymechanic.the transmission was leaking.

Car made nocking noise when brought intothe mechanic said that it was nothing. Spoke to the owner and he said he would not look at the engine or take it out in fear that it would be the transmission. He wrote a note and said that if the car was not driveable that he would repair the car if it was the same problem as before. Now the car feels as if it is in to low of a gear. Also i have lost a lot of power.

While driving vehiclestarted making noise, and would not move from the middle of the street. Dealer said vehicle needs new transmission.

Transmissionmalfunctioned while driving, causing the vehicle to lose power.dealer has replaced the module prior to this incident.the manufacturer has been notified.

Consumer heard noise fromfront of vehicle when slowing down.mechanic foundtransmission needed to be replaced.consumer states differential pin broke, chrysler agreed to pay 2/3 of cost. .

Consumer was driving, stopped at a light, went to shift to first gear fromm third and shifter handle came off.

Since the purchase of this vehicle it has been in the repair shop 9 times. Several of these repairs have been repeat repairs. The manual transmission started giving us problems on 10/18/1999. It took them until 08/28/2001 to repair it. Then we had to bring it back on 10/22/2001 because a seal was leaking on the transmission. At that time i had them listen to the car, because the transmission was making the same noise it started with in 10/1999. They said they didn't hear anything, which is what they told us up until 08/28/2001. Now this car is getting ready to go back to the shop for the transmission. In the 3 years we have owned this car it has had $5201.48 worht of repairs done to it. In addition to the defective parts i have listed, it also had an ignition coil, injectors, ball joints, and tie rod ends replaced. All repairs we done by middletown dodge, rt 17m, middletown, ny, except the first repair. That was performed by the dealer. Fortunately we have a great extended waranty. Otherwise we would have had to pay for all these repairs ourselves. We are concerned that this car will continue to breakdown and we won't be able to afford to keep it or someone will be injured.

Accident occurred due to failure of the brakes.while driving northbound on knights road in bensalem, a car (2 cars ahead of me)slammed on their brakes to make a left hand turn.the mini-van that was directly in front of me also stopped suddenly.as i approached, i slowed down to a stop.the mini-van started to proceed around the vehicle.i then took my foot off the brake to also go around the vehicle, however the mini-van stopped suddenly again. At this point i placed my foot on the brake pedal and it went to the floor.my car rolled into the mini-van. My insurance paid out approximatly $1500.00 in damage to fix their bumper.i am now however going through a lawsuit for bodily damage.after the accident occurred i contacted chrysler.they sent an inspector out to check my brakes at the dealership. The result was they found nothing wrong with my brakes and that i need to learn how to drive a car with anti-lock brakes.this infuriated me for it is not the first car i have had with anti-lock brakes and i never had a problem before with any other car.this accident was not the first time that the brakes failed on this car.several incidents occurred previous where i would turn into a driveway or parking lot and suddenly loose my brakes for a few minutes.after i took my car to the dealership for the inspection, i haven't had any further problems with the brakes.i was never informed whether any adjustments were made to fix the problem or if itis just a coincedance.since i've had this car there has been at least 4 recalls on various things.i lease the vehicle and when i contacted the dealership because i didn't feel safe driving it, there was nothing that i could do except ot buy out the lease which i couldn't afford.

Computer controller, idler arm and pulley, timing belt, and bottom crank gear all went out at same time.head gasket was found to be defective while in shop for timing belt repairs.chrysler has agreed to pay for 500 of the 725 dollars it would cost to fix head gasket, but nothing on all the timing belt related problems at 525.00.auto was 4,000 miles and 1 year out of warranty when problems occurred.just seems odd that the computer and all the timing belt related problems happened at the same time.the computer was replaced under warranty.after computer was replaced the timing belt problems were discovered.

While coming off the highway at 70mph the steering inner tie rod came apart andsteering was lost. Dealer has not seen.

Tie rods failed.

While pulling out of the parking lot, notice difficulty in steering.tie rod broked and had to be replaced, there was no grease fitting on the part, the stud was missing, rubber boot destoryed after stud fell out, catastrophic failure.

My wife called me to report that she was experiencing some binding in the steering as she was leaving the parking lot of a shopping mall, and had decided to return to the parking lot.i went to the lot to investigate the matter and drove the car in the lot, turning both left and right frequently, and the steering seemed to be alright.i decided to drive the car home, and then noticed that a slight clunking noise could be heard when driving over rough spots in the pavement.i decided to jack up the right front wheel to try and determine what might be loose.while manuvering the car into position in my garage, the right tie rod end ball stud separated from its socket, which of course is the connection to the right side steering knuckle.the socket and ball were very rusty and there was no lubrication present, although it is supposed to be a sealed, lubricated for life joint which does not have a grease fitting.

Clunk in the left front revealed failed tie rod end. Upon removal is was found that the left tie rod end had separated at the ball stud. The ball stud was only being held in place by the rubber boot. We also replaced the right tie rod end and found that it too was failing. It was showing signs of binding. Failure was imminent.

Car had been taken in last year at van andel dealership in grand rapids michigan for recall work.the left front tire has had a knock or creek in it for about a year to year and a half.i had asked them about this when the car was being fixed for recall work.they told me there was nothing wrong with it.yesterday my wife and children went to go to the store.they stopped at an intersection and proceeded to go when the car kept going straight instead of turning.there was no warning of a problem until this happened except for the creeking.k and m northfield dodoge of grand rapids called me today with the estimate of thecar.they told me the car has a broken tie rod.the car is only 4 years old with about 55000 miles on it.he said it was nmot uncommon due to the cab-0forward design puts too much stress on the tie rods.i am concerned someone could die in an accident.should there be stronger tie rods put in these cars.thank you please e-mail or call with any questions.i am very concerned about my family and others driving these vehicles when there is a sudden loss of steering and the wheel separated from the ball joint.

As of now, we have had to replace all four wheel bearings.both front bearings were replaced at approx. 51,000 miles;the right rear bearing was replaced at 64,200 miles;the left rear bearing was just replaced at approx. 67,800 miles.today, we brought the car back in to the dealer with what we suspect is a problem with the right rear bearing again.it is unusual for a car to need one wheel bearing replaced, never mind all four.we feel that these repeated problems are due to a manufacturer defect and that as such, the manufacturer should be responsible for the replacement of the parts.any info and/or help you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Right wheel bearing failed.

When driving over a bump, i noticed a noise from the rear of the car. I inspected the area and found that the bracket which secures the trailing arm link had disintegrated from rust. The trailing arm link was "floating" at the frame end. It serves to provide stability for the entire rear suspension. I replaced the brackets on bothsides (left and right) as the other side was also near failure. The rest of the frame and undercarriage are nearly rust free.the failed and nearly failed parts are available.

While driving and had the foot off the gas pedal, the vehicle does not slow down, but it speeds up which may cause an accident.been dealer , dealer cannot determine problem.cause unknown. Please provide details.

Vehicle accelerated to full throttle and stuck there when passing gear is engaged at any speed.driver applied brakes and shifted to neutral to regain control.

While driving 60 mph with cruise controlon vehicle accelerated.consumer tried to turn cruise control off, butwould not turn off. Consumer applied brakes hard.finally was able to slow vehicle down. Took out of gear, and engine was revving, shifted back and forth from drive to neutral to disengage cruise control, andwas able to stop vehicle.

I have had over 8 different problems with this car in the last 2yrs, have brakes replaced twice, tires replaced twice, electric door locks fixed and still not working properly, high pitched noise when pressing on the gas, mechanics could not find problem, and i have written to chrylser to no avail.have tried to get rid of car but noone wants it. Owe more than what the car is worth. Chrysler will not do anything about it. Any help would be appreciated.

Consumer states vehicle does not accelerate, when applying gas vehicle shuts off. Dealer notified.

Accelerator pedal sticks, causing vehicle to go into open throttle position, and sometimes in close position where the pedal locked and will not move.in for repair , throttle cable could be sticking.

Design flaw in cable to throttle body cause engine to stick at full throttle.

I had my cruise control on while coming home last night around 8:00 pm.when i applied my breaks when i entered a town my car accelerator was stuck.i turned off my cruise control and i it was still stuck.i took the country route home.when i pulled into my drive and put the car in park it max out the rpm and i quickly turned off the engine.i did notice that dodge has a bulletin about the speed sensor loss of cruise control (4/99) does that means i have to pray for my life.i forgot to mention that i was being a semi when this happened and he was stopping for a red light and i was not.thank god i had enough common sense on what to do. *la

Cruise control locked up. Was not able to disengage cruise control. Dealer statedcruise control cablewas inoperative.
