The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram.the contact stated that the air bag indicator light illuminates and an alarm sounds four times intermittently.eventually, the air bag light dims.the contact will have the vehicle inspected.there are two air bag recalls (nhtsa campaign id numbers 01v153000 and 99v002000); however, the manufacturer stated that his vehicle was not included in either one.the current mileage was 120,000 and failure mileage was 119,800.
Horn very hard to operate ,air bag cover gets too hard in cold weather
Chrysler denies liability. It was 2-3 degrees off center impact.point of interest: chrysler recalled 98 ram trucks and vans due to faulty air bag sensors. I also find it hard to fathom that many accidents are exactly square when the impact. My truck was only very slightly angled 2-3 degrees at impact and did so much damage the entire frame must be replaced. Icar certified airbag mechanics that saw the truck all said that the airbags should have deployed without doubt. It is very difficult for an owner to take on chrysler and their laywers. I feel that they know they have a problem and are just trying toblow me off. Thanks for your help and interest in this matter.
Vehicle was set on cruise control going70 mph.vehicle slowed down, andabs lights/ air bag light/ speedometer went to zero/ gas gauge went to empty, and tank was full. Consumer took it into dealer,andclockspringneeded to be replaced. Dealer has not stated if it will be covered.

Air bag warning light and alarm sounds . Returnde truck to moss motors (dodge dealer in riverside) they reset the alarm and light but did not have an answer sa to what was wrong . The warning light and alarm returned the following day. They charged me $50.00 to reset the alarm? with no fix! now what. No airbags deployed, and i was moving at a good rate of speed (35-40 mph).i did contact dodge, but they are sitting on their hands, and are not sending out an investigation team to find out why the airbags didn't deploy.i would like for nhtsato conduct an investigation of their own.the truck hasn't been worked on, butthe insurance company is antsy to get the truck fixed, since i am in a rental vehicle. Is there any way of having the nhtsa come out and do an investigation in a timely matter (within a week (by 11/10))?
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram.while driving various speeds, the air bag warning indicator randomly illuminates and the air bag chime will begin to sound.the horn in the vehicle has also stopped working.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and provided them with information he found online regarding nhtsa campaign id number 01v153000 (air bags).he was informed that the vin was not included in the recall, although the failures were identical.the contact would be responsible for the repair costs.the vehicle is currently at the dealer and they stated that the clock springs were the cause of the failures in the horn and the air bags.the air bag system was completely disabled and would not deploy in the event of a crash.the failure mileage was 124,000 and current mileage was 125,000.updated 10/20/08.*ljupdated 10/21/08.
While driving,the consumer tried to avoid another vehicle that was coming inside of the lane.when the consumer applied the brakes, the pedal went to the floor. The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal went to the floorboard when depressed. The brake indicator light also illuminated. The brakes also failed intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership for a diagnostic test and the contact was informed that the braking system was functioning properly but the failures were causing by an electric component. The vehicle was at the dealership for repair at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 115,000.
Within 3 days of buying the dodge truck, while traveling down the road the gauges would malfunction and the truck would die. You could put it in neutral and restart it. It was taken to the shop and nothing was found wrong. This continues. Then we started blowing breakers and fuses that run brake lights and blinkers. Took to the shop. Found nothing. Just replaced breakers and fuses 3 times in 2 weeks. Now the check engine light comes on and motor dies going down the road. We have now had to buy a new apps sensor which cost us 613.61 because truck is now out of warranty without ever being fixed. This electrical problem has been and still is a safety hazard to everyone. It could cause a serious accident which chrysler refuses to acknowledge. I know of another vehicle like mine in california that has had the same problems as mine and also one in fayetteville, ar. The man in arkansas was having his truck worked on at the same time mine was in the shop. This is too many problems for a new vehicle.

The horn buttons are very difficult to locate/press.the resulting delay to activate the horn in an emergency situation ,could be potentially hazardous to driver/occupants or pedestrians.
Horn buttone (the area you press in the center of the steering wheel) will no press in to honk, due to design problem, due to air bag.there is not way to honk the horn
Due to the location of the horn assembly, when attempting to depress the horn pad it is very difficult to locate the horn. Consumer states that due to the airbag location, it is difficult to locate and to honk.

When trying to use the horn, you have to push so hard that it is almost impossible to get it to work without going off the road. The rubber covering the steering wheel center is way to hard to operate the horn. I have been told by other people with '98 dodge truck, rams that the only way to fix the problem is to install a '99 ram airbag assembly. I am going to be going to my dealer in a couple of weeks and i am going to see what they can do about this problem. It would make it a lot easier if the nhtsa would do something about this problem since i have heard that dealers refuse to fix the problem in many cases.
Horn has two small buttons on both side of airbag cover whichare too small to locate and hard to press, not allowing driver to communicate with other drivers. Manufacturer states there is no plan to revise horn.
Horn can not be sounded in a quick emergency situation due to airbag configuration. Can only be sounded if thumb is precisely pressed exactly on two spots indicated while looking at those spots ie: can not have eyes on road..
The passenger's or driver's side seat belt does not retract. Also, you almost have to punch the horn pad to get it to work. The dealership was not able to correct the problem with the seat belt or the horn.owner has 2 other trucks with the same problems. Please list vin #s for other 2 trucks.

I think that a horn that requires so much effort that it is useless is a safety problem. Although the dealer and the company district representitive say that the all of the 1998 horns are like that. Somethingcan be done. Chrysler says in their specs that the horn should operate at 2 lbs of pressure not, the 10 lbs or more that they really take.i would like to know why, if there is no problem (they claim) did they fix it for 1999. Same steering wheel and pad but it now works.

The driver has to press down on the horn pad extremely hard before the horn will blow. This is very dangerous in an emergency situation.

Spark knock noticed, vehicle taken to nearest dodge dealership(colonial dr., orlando,fl). Vehicle was evaluated by computer diagnostic system and road test: reported as normal. On further insistance and discussion, service tech found intake manifold gasket was defective and would need replacement. It was also mentioned by this dealership, as well as by several other mechanics, that this is a problem dodge is having on v-6 and v-8 style engines. This problem has become so widespread that dodge has published bulletins on repair of this defect. Dodge has also agreed to repair this defect in the v-6 engines. Since i am theowner of a v-8 engine that this defect also exists, i feel dodge is responsible for the failure of the part in my engine and i should be compensated for the diagnostic test and repair of engine manifold plenum pan gasket. Thank-you for your assisstance in this matter.
I have an ongoing problem with preignition (spark knock) in my 1998 dodge ram 1500 with the 318 cid/5.2l motor..at 24,896 miles, my dealer re-programmed the pcm and re-routed the spark wires.the spark knock continued.at 35,067 miles, the dealer adjusted the timing; i didn't think this could be done.the spark knock continued.at 43,281 miles, the dealer replaced the intake plenium gasket.the spark knock continued.at 45,093, the dealer replaced both engine heads.the spark knock continued.at 57,452 miles, i installed a colder thermostat and this helped somewhat, but the spark knock returned.and, today at 74,834 miles i installed a set of truck spark plugs to see if that will help.the bottom line is that this truck has an inherint defective design in the engine which is being prematurely worn out due to spark knock.i would like the nhtsa to investigate, and help me in securing a replacement for my problem plagued lemon.thank you!
In cold weather defective pcm part within computerbecomes inoperative, causing the fuel/oil pump and water gauge to go out. Also driver is unable to shift gears. Chrsyler cannot determine problem.
Consumer recived a letter from dealer saying that they had a recall on the enigine computer, recall #799, and also a recall on a defective fuel pump, recall #788. Consumer says that the dealer does not have parts yet .
The truck we purchased had a towing package as ordered.what they didn't tell us is that the wiring isn't heavy enough for prolonged use.we tow a 50' trailer with our truck for a living.right after we purchased it we had to replace the trailer relay switch and then many, many fuses.then we started smelling hot wiring.the headlight switch was hot and lights inside started going light to dark.then they went out completely.we lost all truck lights and trailer lights going down the highway at 55 miles an hour.we took it into the dealership and they had to replace the main truck wiring harness and the light switch and the short pigtail between them.dodge knows this has been a common problem with rams used for towing.the consumer was experiencing wiring problem ( not heavy enough wires) with all three vehicles owned.
Fuel pump had to be replaced due to engine dying out. Engine checklight came on & then died out. Had fuse replaced due to blowing out constantly. Engine & catalytic converteraffected.

All instrument guages and warning lights do not work consistantly.at times there is no way to know what speed i am going and how much full i have because the guages are not working.i believe this consitutes a safety problem.i have heard other owners of 1997 model year vehicles were having similar problems.

Truck has been nothing but problems replaced many parts for leaks and transmission problems engine light consistently comes on even after repairs. Truck buck when accelerating looses engine power. Would like it fixed i read other complaints and they had the same problem. I put a lot of money into the truck and have not yet been able to fix problem because they cant seem to figure out the cause. Problem has been on going since vehicle was purchased.
My husband ordered this truck in late 1997. We purchased it new and have had numerous problems with the vehicle.the biggest problem we have faced is the transmission.mid-april 1998 the first problems occured with slippage, the transmission cooling lines were replaced, one month later the torque converter went and repairs were made.now at 51,000 miles and very little driving for the last 2 yrs (since my husband has been sick with cancer) it has blown again.the front seals are leaking profusely.the rear window was leaking so badly at one point the entire ceiling inside was soaded.the abs computer went wacky on us early on also. The seatbelt has been twisted since we purchased the vehicle and we have not successfully fixed it. The extended warranty we purchased has gone out of business.i will not likely buy another dodge ever again.mercedes takes the cake.

Consumer complaining of driving vehicle on the street at 40 mph, on normal road conditions, when consumer went to apply the brakes, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Dealer notified, but still wants consumer to pay even with warranty. Proportioning valve was replaced.consumer states there is a snapping noise in the steering column, dealer replaced front axle track.steering wheel was off center.lower radiator hose was rubbing the frame and was worn, dealer replaced.
Consumer was having problems with the intake manifold. The intake manifold ruptured which caused the oil to be sucked out of the oil pan, after the repair was made on the gasket, the bearing on the crankshaft failed, prior to the failure the consumer noticed the oil pressure gauge did not register correctly.
Head gasket is leakingonto exhaust. The oil leaking on to the exhaust pipe could cause fire when the exhaust pipe becomes hot.
Failure of the intake gasket caused the engine's oil supply to be evacuated through the vacuum system. Not only was this event detrimental to the engine itself but it also contaminated the vacuum and exhaust systems.
When driving the plenum within the engineheadgasket blew out. This part has blowen out every 6 thousand miles, parts have been replaced on three different occasions. Please provide any further details.

We had aaa tow the van to a dodge dealer in bourbon, mo. The next day the machanic found the problem. The asd 20amp fuse blew, the asd fuse is located uder the hood in the power distribution center. The asd fuse handles engine controls/fuel pump. The dealership in burbon could not find the problem, but he did give us extra fuses to get us home. We had to stop at walmarks to buy extra fuses. 1.the passenger side mirror glass on this vehicle, ram 2500 series, has cracked due to the extreme cold conditions in my location.presents an even more and distorted view of the roadway.the product is inferior glass.2.excessive pinging in the 5.9l engine.the manual states that you can use an 87 octane rated fuel in this engine.if you do even without a "load" in the vehicle the engine will constantly "ping."using a higher octane rating the pinging noise is still noticeable.also this engine from the start uses approximately 1/2 - 3/4 of a quart of oil between oil changes.very bad for a new product.3.the same door on the 2500 series (quad cab) ram truck is used on the type of truck that i own, the extended or club cab.however, where there is weatherstripping on the quad cab door on the lower running board sides, (both doors) there is absolutely no stripping on the extended cab doors (club cab).this allows for the infiltration of dirt and water to actually come up and sit or reside on the top plate.this makes for a bad situation not only for the cleanliness of the truck on those panels but for corrosive qualities as well.
Original complaint was severe engine pinging, hesitation going uphills between 40-45 mph and check engine light lit.dealer replaced idle air control motor and replaced a spark plug.problem cleared for approximately 10,000 miles, then returned.goodyear dealer replaced ignition wires and spark plugs at 50,000 according to a dodge tsb.problem still persists.goodyear advised that dodge has a tsb for this problem and is aware of the problem.i would like to know what action i can take.
The defect is in the alignment of the truck and the engine. With the alignment set to manufacturer's specifications the truck still pulls out of the driving lane. Within ten seconds the truck will completely vacate the lane. The second problem is the engine has a "stumble" or miss-fire at idle. Again the manufactures states the engine is also within guidelines. The dealer claims there is an industry standard for alignment, but provides no written documentation on what the standards are or what the manufacturer's acceptable tolerances are specifically. Do you have anything which indicates alignment standards and engine timing.
My name is john simonelli and i purchased a dodge ram truck.i had many problems with it like brakes,air, fuel problems, raidiator, and worse of all stalling on left turns.i reported to bell dodge of my truck stalling on left turns.they looked at it once and said the truck was ok.after that i took the truck down to the dealer each time reporting of incident.all they did was document the problem and send me away.they would not even make an attempt to solve the problem despite the danger the truck was to me and others.to prove my case i had to push them to hook up a co-pilot for readings.the computer would show the vehicle died for some unknown reason.however the co-pilot would not tell them how to fix problem so their for the problem did not excist.then i had to drive around with a cam-corder to record problem.after doing so i was forced to sell vehicle because they did not know how to fix problem and would not give me a new truck.i have too much to say so if you have any questions please call me.i took a 14,500 dollar loss on my vehicle, someone else is driving this unsafe vehicle, and finaly both bell dodge and dalmler chrysler ignored my lawyer which cost me an additional 2,600.

I have an ongoing problem with preignition (spark knock) in my 1998 dodge ram 1500 with the 318 cid/5.2l motor..at 24,896 miles, my dealer re-programmed the pcm and re-routed the spark wires.the spark knock continued.at 35,067 miles, the dealer adjusted the timing; i didn't think this could be done.the spark knock continued.at 43,281 miles, the dealer replaced the intake plenium gasket.the spark knock continued.at 45,093, the dealer replaced both engine heads.the spark knock continued.at 57,452 miles, i installed a colder thermostat and this helped somewhat, but the spark knock returned.and, today at 74,834 miles i installed a set of truck spark plugs to see if that will help.the bottom line is that this truck has an inherint defective design in the engine which is being prematurely worn out due to spark knock.i would like the nhtsa to investigate, and help me in securing a replacement for my problem plagued lemon.thank you!

Prior to the recall, the trailer hitch attachment was cracked anddeteriorated, the dealer replaced trailer hitch. Consumer also stated that the air condition was not blowing cold.*yd
My husband ordered this truck in late 1997. We purchased it new and have had numerous problems with the vehicle.the biggest problem we have faced is the transmission.mid-april 1998 the first problems occured with slippage, the transmission cooling lines were replaced, one month later the torque converter went and repairs were made.now at 51,000 miles and very little driving for the last 2 yrs (since my husband has been sick with cancer) it has blown again.the front seals are leaking profusely.the rear window was leaking so badly at one point the entire ceiling inside was soaded.the abs computer went wacky on us early on also. The seatbelt has been twisted since we purchased the vehicle and we have not successfully fixed it. The extended warranty we purchased has gone out of business.i will not likely buy another dodge ever again.mercedes takes the cake.

Calipers were seized from factory, three days later the problem was back, dealership performed alignment, problem still persisted and continues to do so. The reason i put power steering down under the comments section is because of my belief that the problem resides in the steering gear-box, which has not been checked. The back-up lights did not work upon delivery but were fixed immediately and have been fine ever-since. The drver-side window molding leaks and on certain days causes fogging of the window resulting in a loss of vision and an unsafe driving condition. O.e.m. Jackstand is also to short to replace tire on independent front suspension.

Spark knock noticed, vehicle taken to nearest dodge dealership(colonial dr., orlando,fl). Vehicle was evaluated by computer diagnostic system and road test: reported as normal. On further insistance and discussion, service tech found intake manifold gasket was defective and would need replacement. It was also mentioned by this dealership, as well as by several other mechanics, that this is a problem dodge is having on v-6 and v-8 style engines. This problem has become so widespread that dodge has published bulletins on repair of this defect. Dodge has also agreed to repair this defect in the v-6 engines. Since i am theowner of a v-8 engine that this defect also exists, i feel dodge is responsible for the failure of the part in my engine and i should be compensated for the diagnostic test and repair of engine manifold plenum pan gasket. Vehicle was parked andwas in neutralwhile warming up.emergency brake was on. Also, consumer went inside ofhouse, and when she came back out vehicle vehicle had rolled down street/ hit a tire wall, and went into a enbankment.

The transmission failed due to lack of lubrication.just go to jasper.com.they say that 1995 to 2001 dodge trucktransmissions have a high rate of failure due to lack of lubrication.seems that dodge put to low a volume pump in all these transmissions. Local transmission rebuilders tell me that you can not let the truck idle because the tranny gets no lubrication at low rpm's.so during the winter while you are waiting for the windsheild to clear off to drive in the northeast where it snows.you are damaging your tranny.the tranny over heat light never came on just the service engine light.dodge says there is nothing wrong. I have a list of other people who have had dodge tranny problems.one is my brother-in-law.

My husband ordered this truck in late 1997. We purchased it new and have had numerous problems with the vehicle.the biggest problem we have faced is the transmission.mid-april 1998 the first problems occured with slippage, the transmission cooling lines were replaced, one month later the torque converter went and repairs were made.now at 51,000 miles and very little driving for the last 2 yrs (since my husband has been sick with cancer) it has blown again.the front seals are leaking profusely.the rear window was leaking so badly at one point the entire ceiling inside was soaded.the abs computer went wacky on us early on also. The seatbelt has been twisted since we purchased the vehicle and we have not successfully fixed it. The extended warranty we purchased has gone out of business.i will not likely buy another dodge ever again.mercedes takes the cake.

Please refer to service bulletin 971017182997, nhtsa sb054220.this is what i am experiencing on my truck.i have no complaints with the dealer they did all they could.the torque converter locks up between 40 and 53 mph.i wanted them to fix it.they said all of the dodge rampickups do this.the whole truck starts to shake between 40 and 53 and its due to the gear setting in the tranny and the engine rpm.this was designed by dodge for fuel effeciency but causes the truck to shake due to torque converter lock-up.i was satisified that it wasn't just a problem with my truck when the dodge dealer let me pick out a new dodge on his lot with the same size engine and drive train, it had 6 miles on it (brand new 99').when i drove the new truck it was considerably worst than mine and started to shake between 30 and about 53 but it shook more than my truck thru the entire range.i am concerned that this shaking due to torque converter lockup won't eventually shorten the life of the torque converter and possibly the transmission.i found your service on the internet, so i am giving it a try. Transmission failure.
Transmission overheated ,overdrive automatically disengaged. The odor of burned transmission oil was evident.this was a new transmission and was replaced with a rebuilt transmission by the dealer at $50 deductible. The rebuilt will only be warranted for the first 12 months or 12000 miles.i suspect the transmission is either undercooled or a failure to use the proper atf fluid caused this.vehicle is under service contract and is serviced for all fluid changes by the dealer.
The rpms increased, and the gears popped on the vehicle ontheir own. Took vehicle to repair shop for check up,and results showed that a new transmission needed to be replaced.
Truck has been nothing but problems replaced many parts for leaks and transmission problems engine light consistently comes on even after repairs. Truck buck when accelerating looses engine power. We purchased a 1998 dodge conversion van as our family vehicle. On sept 21,2000 my wife loaded our children, ages 7,6, & 2, into the vehicle. She then went & locked the house door. Our 2 year old got out of her car seat, went to the front of the van, & pulled down on the gear shift pulling it into gear. The vehicle rolled over a 3 foot wall, down a steep hill, through a 2 foot ditch, and then struck a telephone pole. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured, but this condition could have tragic. I own an insurance agency so i started to check around to see if this was a defect that the vehicle could be put into gear without first applying the brake. What i found out was shocking, i was informed by the dodge dealer that this safety feature was an option on this vehicle, which i was not informed of at time of purchase , this is ludicrous!!! in my research i have yet to find a private passenger vehicle that is not equipped with this safety feature and to declare it an option on a family use vehicle is irresponsible. Thank goodness the lord was looking over my family that day, but what about the next family. Please look into this situation, so no family has to needlessly endure a tragedy.

I have an ongoing problem with preignition (spark knock) in my 1998 dodge ram 1500 with the 318 cid/5.2l motor..at 24,896 miles, my dealer re-programmed the pcm and re-routed the spark wires.the spark knock continued.at 35,067 miles, the dealer adjusted the timing; i didn't think this could be done.the spark knock continued.at 43,281 miles, the dealer replaced the intake plenium gasket.the spark knock continued.at 45,093, the dealer replaced both engine heads.the spark knock continued.at 57,452 miles, i installed a colder thermostat and this helped somewhat, but the spark knock returned.and, today at 74,834 miles i installed a set of truck spark plugs to see if that will help.the bottom line is that this truck has an inherint defective design in the engine which is being prematurely worn out due to spark knock.i would like the nhtsa to investigate, and help me in securing a replacement for my problem plagued lemon.thank you!
When this vehicle is placed in park the gear shift reads park, but its really in reverse. When in reverse its really is in park. Consumer has to place it in neutral to start it up. Dealer has not been contacted.
The first incident of losing 5th gear was in elizabethtown ky.the vehicle was being driven @ 55mph and lost 5th gear.the truck was taken to swope auto center in elizabethtown and the description of repairs is that 5th gear was loose.repairs were made as follows:instlled nut pkg., installed sealer, installed lubricant, replaced the nut and washer and then reassembled.break-down #2 occurred 4/19/99 the vehicle was being driven @ 55mph and suddenly lost all power.it was taken to taylor chrysler plymouth dodge in kankakee il. The mileage is at 70590, it has been found that fifth gear is lost, and the input shaft is bad.the original repair was $1100.00 and now this repair is estimated at $3200.00.after reading your service bulletin, i found there are two listed on the transmission alone, sb#980911211098, and sb#980925211098,they both have to do with the loss of 5th gear.

There is a buzzing noise in the transmition when put in reverse after a cold start.i have had the truck in 4 times now to remedy the problem.they say all the trucks have this problem and it is a non harmful problem that a modification has been made for.the have preformed the modification and it hasn't fixed the problem.i am bringing the truck in again for them to do the mod again.my problem is that i am about out of warrenty, and they are telling me this is a harmful problem.i have mechanic friends that agree with me when i say it sounds like the transmition isn't getting fluid when it is first put in reverse.if what myself and the mechanic friends i have are right, the transmition will eventually break.there are alot of people i know that have dodges, and none of them have this problem. Why can"t they fix this problem?

Fifth gear loss is caused by ( nut holding fifth gear backing off) as i was told by dealer. This is a common problemaccording to the dealer (tsb 21-10-98) cost to fix this is $400.00-$799.00 and they said it could happen again. I was told it was caused by backing off the throtle in fifth gear. This is a clear case of design defect in the transmission. I know of many people with this truck who are having the same problem.

Transmission cooler lines leaking, requiring replacement.
Transmission shifts late on certain occasions jumping into gear, diagnostics' were performed by dealership resulting in a negative result, the truck still persist's with the problem usually at speeds' 35 mph and under. The truck has pulled right upon delivery, dealership replaced calipers stating that the o.e.m. Calipers were seized from factory, three days later the problem was back, dealership performed alignment, problem still persisted and continues to do so. The reason i put power steering down under the comments section is because of my belief that the problem resides in the steering gear-box, which has not been checked. The back-up lights did not work upon delivery but were fixed immediately and have been fine ever-since. The drver-side window molding leaks and on certain days causes fogging of the window resulting in a loss of vision and an unsafe driving condition. O.e.m. Jackstand is also to short to replace tire on independent front suspension.

When system failed, we were unable to put seat belts on due to computers loss of programing.this is not only unsafe, but illegal in this state and many others.there sould be a default to a mechanical locking system, not just go inop. And leave us in a very unsafe situation.
Driver seatbelt will locks up without applying brakes/with or without the key in igniton,or if the consumer is sitting still or moving, causing consumer to be trapped against seat. Dealer has replaced seatbelt, but defect is still occurring . The dealer is unwilling tocorrect the problem.the unpredictability of when the belt will lock makes it particularily dangerous.
Seat belt control module caused current draw that depletes battery.disconnecting the module stops current draw but deactivates the seat belts.

Driver's side restraint system malfunction.
Consumer's vehicle washit the rear by another vehicle which spunconsumer's vehicle out of control, hitting a concrete wall. Consumer stated seat belts did not lock, and air bags didnot deploy, resulting in injuries.
Passenger seat belt buckle isbroken and cracked.
Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision where it flipped over five times.upon impact,airbags did not deploy, andrestraints did not retract, resulting in minor injuries and ejection fromvehicle. Manufacturer will be notified.
Both front seat belts have failed to retract when exiting the truck.this has cause them to get caught in the door latch when the door was closed.both belts have been cut and severely damaged.

Replacement of both driver and passenger side front disc rotors required due to cracking of the actual rotors. After only 23000 miles this is not expected wear. No excessive use of brakes during this time. Due to safety reasons, rotors were replaced. Local dodge dealer was informed (marin dodge, san rafael, ca). I am awaiting a response from dodge/dealer as to wether i shall be recompensed some/all of the cost of replacing this failed component.
My husband ordered this truck in late 1997. We purchased it new and have had numerous problems with the vehicle.the biggest problem we have faced is the transmission.mid-april 1998 the first problems occured with slippage, the transmission cooling lines were replaced, one month later the torque converter went and repairs were made.now at 51,000 miles and very little driving for the last 2 yrs (since my husband has been sick with cancer) it has blown again.the front seals are leaking profusely.the rear window was leaking so badly at one point the entire ceiling inside was soaded.the abs computer went wacky on us early on also. The seatbelt has been twisted since we purchased the vehicle and we have not successfully fixed it. The extended warranty we purchased has gone out of business.i will not likely buy another dodge ever again.mercedes takes the cake.
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal went to the floorboard when depressed. The brake indicator light also illuminated. The brakes also failed intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership for a diagnostic test and the contact was informed that the braking system was functioning properly but the failures were causing by an electric component. The vehicle was at the dealership for repair at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 115,000.

The vehicle makes right turns upon braking, at any speed. Of course the faster the speed the more dangerous the problem, esp. If you are also making a right turn or there are any imperfections in the road such as dirt, gravel, bumps, or holes, at which this point the steering wheel jerks, sometimes completly from your hand, whih was experienced buy the tech. Dodge asked to test drive w/ me. I was told chrysler is aware of the problem but is unable , ( does not know how ) to fix the problem, they will put my name on a list and when they figure out how to fix it and to engine noise they will call me. I asked them to put in writing my truck was safe to drive ( knowing it isn't) they refused but again said chrysler is aware. When i bought the truck we were aware of this problem, but they assured me they would fix it 5 times in the shop now they tell me they can't, and will not talk the truck back, i'm out 26,000.00$ and i need a truck for my business. I just want my truck fixed or replaced, or them to purchase it back so that i may purchase yet another truck.
I returned several times to have my truck repaired yet they failed to repair the brakes to date. I had to replace the tires due to the several panic stops they made while servicing my truck. They kept guessing what could be wrong and they never corrected the problem. The truck still pulls to the right and they clame they don't have a fix for the problem. I have had several near miss situations where there could be an accident. I live in the mountains where the roads are covered with black ice in the winter and i have no doubt that sometime this winter i will hit the gard rail while applying my brakes. Ive also had other panic stops where the truck has ended up in the right lane out of control and ive ended up on the shoulder of the highway under a hard brake. I was in the truck while the dealer service personel test drove the truck and we ended up off the road on the shoulder. I was told that my truck had a dangerous problem and they can't fix it. That same trip to the dealer, the service manager told me to just park it and get a lawyer, "we can't fix your truck". Ive also been told to park it in a bad part of town with the keys in it and hope that it will be gone in the morning.it still pulls. As for the fuel sender, ive had them replaced so many times its hard to say how many. They have lasted as little as 1 week and as long as 4 months. One went out the morning we were headed to l. A. On vacation, 4 days after they had just replaced it, and the service personel told me it would be 10 days before they could look into the problem, so i should just "turn up the stereo" so i don't hear the warning ding, ding. It was hell driving the 1500 miles with the noise of the low fuel ding and my kids in the back seat. I have tried the customer arbitration board, yet they don't seem to think i have a bad enough problem. I was rejected. I now own a truck which i have over $38,000 invested and am afraid to drive for fear of an accident.

These are the last two of the seven incidents of total brake failure for this vehicle. All incidents occurred at speeds of 25 - 60 mph. 6 of the 7 were during normal stopping conditions; 1 emergency stop. When stepping on the brake pedal there is no braking action. The pedal does not go to the floor. Stepping on the brake pedal 1-2 more times and the brakes then grab. 1 incident failed to stop at a stop sign; 1 neccesitated veering out of lane.

The brakes pull to the right when applied creating a very dangerous driving hazzard. The truck has been to three different dodge dealers in a total of seven (7) times in an attempt to obtain a satisfactory repair. The dealers have done steering alignment and replace brake parts on many occausions. However, the problem is a factory design deficiency which is not repairable at the dealer level. Dodge should be forced to redesign the front brake - steering system to correct this problem in a nationwide recall. This problem has become a joke in the automotive industry. The dot should proceed to force dodge to redesign the brake system and correct the problem. This brake pull problem is a serious driving hazzard which causes the vehicle to steer unexpectantly into other traffic lanes when the brakes are applied. The dealers admit that they cannot make a satisfactory repair given the existing parts available from the factory. My name is john simonelli and i purchased a dodge ram truck.i had many problems with it like brakes,air, fuel problems, raidiator, and worse of all stalling on left turns.i reported to bell dodge of my truck stalling on left turns.they looked at it once and said the truck was ok.after that i took the truck down to the dealer each time reporting of incident.all they did was document the problem and send me away.they would not even make an attempt to solve the problem despite the danger the truck was to me and others.to prove my case i had to push them to hook up a co-pilot for readings.the computer would show the vehicle died for some unknown reason.however the co-pilot would not tell them how to fix problem so their for the problem did not excist.then i had to drive around with a cam-corder to record problem.after doing so i was forced to sell vehicle because they did not know how to fix problem and would not give me a new truck.i have too much to say so if you have any questions please call me.i took a 14,500 dollar loss on my vehicle, someone else is driving this unsafe vehicle, and finaly both bell dodge and dalmler chrysler ignored my lawyer which cost me an additional 2,600.

Brake pull causing unsafe condition, especially in wet conditions
Brake pads and rotors have failed for the second time. Current mileage is approximately 14000.
Transmission shifts late on certain occasions jumping into gear, diagnostics' were performed by dealership resulting in a negative result, the truck still persist's with the problem usually at speeds' 35 mph and under. The truck has pulled right upon delivery, dealership replaced calipers stating that the o.e.m. Calipers were seized from factory, three days later the problem was back, dealership performed alignment, problem still persisted and continues to do so. The reason i put power steering down under the comments section is because of my belief that the problem resides in the steering gear-box, which has not been checked. The back-up lights did not work upon delivery but were fixed immediately and have been fine ever-since. The drver-side window molding leaks and on certain days causes fogging of the window resulting in a loss of vision and an unsafe driving condition. O.e.m. Jackstand is also to short to replace tire on independent front suspension.

The brake cylinders had been leaking and were replaced by the dealer in 2000. Then again in december of 2001 we had brake3 trouble and the calipers and cylinders has brakes began to squeak. We had just had everything done less than 6 months ago. We assumed that at the worst the pads needed changing. We took it in the next day. We were informed that it was not the warning system but that the calipers were frozen and had worn out so quickly that the back cyliders were shot too. We were told that our brakes could have gone out completely at any moment there wasn't any warning. Thankfull that we did not have an accident we spent the $800.00 to fix everything. The calipers, roters, cylinders, pads, everything. This is the kicker that next weekend five days later we were comming home from out of town and going down a large hill they began to smoke. And we tried to pull over. We had no brakes!!! thank goodness there was no one in font of us. We shifted intoa lower gear and gradually came to a stop at the bottom of the hill. I am stll waiting to see what the prob. Is now. I had called dodge to see if there was any sort of prob. Or recall with the break system before and they said no. They would fix it but charge us to do so. I did some research and have found that there is so many complaints about the same problems. Our lives have been in jepordy twice and we have been lucky. It is obvious there is a prob. Looking at the complaints of the same nature why are they not doing anything. Do people have to die first. We have tried in vain to fix our truck to work properly with no luck. I only wish we could afford to by another truck. I am afraid that mine and my family's lives are in jepordy. When will dodge step up to the plate and fix this problem?

Vehicle experienced total brake failure, the consumer found that the calipers are made of plastic and feels the failure was caused because a minor amount of heat damaged the plastic pistons, which didn't allow them to slide properly in their cylinders, this didn't allow the pads to retract from the disc brake, causing additional heat build up.

Right front inside brake pad locked against the disc causing continuous wear.i was informed by the service manager that the inside pads do not have "squealers" as do the outside pads so there was no advance indication of impending failure.daimler/chrysler has informed me they would have to decline my request for consideration in this matter because the vehicle had just exceeded the time/mileage limitations of the manufacturer's warranty at the time ($357.78) expense was incurred.

The brake cylinders had been leaking and were replaced by the dealer in 2000. Then again in december of 2001 we had brake3 trouble and the calipers and cylinders has brakes began to squeak. We had just had everything done less than 6 months ago. We assumed that at the worst the pads needed changing. We took it in the next day. We were informed that it was not the warning system but that the calipers were frozen and had worn out so quickly that the back cyliders were shot too. We were told that our brakes could have gone out completely at any moment there wasn't any warning. Thankfull that we did not have an accident we spent the $800.00 to fix everything. The calipers, roters, cylinders, pads, everything. This is the kicker that next weekend five days later we were comming home from out of town and going down a large hill they began to smoke. And we tried to pull over. We had no brakes!!! thank goodness there was no one in font of us. We shifted intoa lower gear and gradually came to a stop at the bottom of the hill. I am stll waiting to see what the prob. Is now. I had called dodge to see if there was any sort of prob. Or recall with the break system before and they said no. They would fix it but charge us to do so. I did some research and have found that there is so many complaints about the same problems. Our lives have been in jepordy twice and we have been lucky. It is obvious there is a prob. Looking at the complaints of the same nature why are they not doing anything. Do people have to die first. Driver lost control and slid cross ways, across the highway, and busted the rear axel. Truck flipped over, and front bumper went into front tire, and the airbags did not deploy. Truck was totalled.

I have not had an accident as a result of this yet. The steering wheel makes alot of noise when you turn it either direction. Had dodge check it out. They said that they have replaced alot of steering columns because of this, but not sure what causes it. Said that most have this problem with lower mileage. Warranty cover the steering column. Seems my warranty is up, they tell me to try and get use to the noise. Said that the noise will get 5 times worse, but didn't think it was a safety issue. It they don't really know what causes it, how can they be sure it isn't a safety issue. If this is a recurring problem, then it is obviously a factory defect

At 58,000 miles, the steering column in my dodge ram 1500 pick up needs to be replaced. There is a noise when the wheel is turned in either direction. I was told by the dealer that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. I wrote a letter to chrysler about the problem because my extended service contract does not cover the steering column. The letter was written on april 5th of this year and i just called chrysler to inquire about an answer and was told my request for "good faith"assistance has been denied. I do not use this vehicle for commercial or off road driving and do not feel the steering column should fail with only 58,000 miles of normal driving. The manufacturer wants nothing to do with the repair other than take my $400-$500 for the repair. I have searched your database and have found no other issues similar to mine with the year and model of my truck. I am also receiving no assistance from the dealer. According to the service manager at the dealer this is not a safety issue and i do not need to worry about any failure.

Air bag warning light and alarm sounds . Returnde truck to moss motors (dodge dealer in riverside) they reset the alarm and light but did not have an answer sa to what was wrong . The warning light and alarm returned the following day. They charged me $50.00 to reset the alarm? with no fix! now what. Transmission shifts late on certain occasions jumping into gear, diagnostics' were performed by dealership resulting in a negative result, the truck still persist's with the problem usually at speeds' 35 mph and under. The truck has pulled right upon delivery, dealership replaced calipers stating that the o.e.m. Calipers were seized from factory, three days later the problem was back, dealership performed alignment, problem still persisted and continues to do so. The reason i put power steering down under the comments section is because of my belief that the problem resides in the steering gear-box, which has not been checked. The back-up lights did not work upon delivery but were fixed immediately and have been fine ever-since. The drver-side window molding leaks and on certain days causes fogging of the window resulting in a loss of vision and an unsafe driving condition. O.e.m. Jackstand is also to short to replace tire on independent front suspension.

Van leans low on drivers side also loud clanging spring noises when driving and makeing turns. This condition is from factory. Noticed problem 2 days after taking van home from dealer.
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked he noticed the dash board of the vehicle was cracked badly. The contact stated that the weather was not hot and was not a factor with the vehicle dash board defect.the contact had pieces of the dashboard fly into his eyes. He took the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic and testing. The dealer stated that the owner of the vehicle would have to pay for the repairs. There had been no repairs done at the time of the complaint. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000. The approximate current mileage was 85,000.
The spare tire mechanism that hold the tire under the bed broke.this failure was very dangerous since it occurred while i was driving, my spare tire fell onto the street and rolled.luckily i was in a 35 mph area, but cars still had to move out of the way of the rolling tire.had i been on the interstate, it could have been disastrous.

My 1998 dodge ram equipped with an automatic transmission shifts into neutral when hitting hard bumps in the road.chrysler district manager says all dodge rams do this and i ought to drive a little slower.the abs brakes have also fairled on a steep decline.the noise from the front end was horrendous and the wheels continued to roll with no effort to stop.also the front end of this truck cannot be aligned.dodge has attempted to correct the problem by installing aftermarket ball joints, however problem still exists and i have gone thru 3 sets of tires.if all ram trucks shift into neutral then all should be off the road as mine is.i have received several calls from other owners having the same problem.

The defect is in the alignment of the truck and the engine. With the alignment set to manufacturer's specifications the truck still pulls out of the driving lane. Within ten seconds the truck will completely vacate the lane. The second problem is the engine has a "stumble" or miss-fire at idle. Again the manufactures states the engine is also within guidelines. The dealer claims there is an industry standard for alignment, but provides no written documentation on what the standards are or what the manufacturer's acceptable tolerances are specifically. Do you have anything which indicates alignment standards and engine timing.

While driving around a corner at approximately 15mph the sway bar fell out. Drove to dealer & mechanic noticed the sway bar hanging & had to repair it. The 2nd incident: had lost steering control & hit a tree. Neither air bag deployed upon impact.

Tire size is lt265/75r-16/c. The tire failed while returning from omaha with my wife and 8 month old son. I have digital pictures of the tire and truck that can be sent over e-mail. I have contacted pirelli and they want me to send the tire along with estimates to fix the truck. I spoke with nadine calderwood at 1-800-243-5105 ext 387. She did not seem to care if anyone was injured or not and seemed to be exactly like her title a risk manager. The tires have aprox 20,000 miles on them. I was driving 75 mph and the truck had a slight vibration i checked tire pressure when we stopped and visually inspected the tires. After we filled with gas the vibration was no longer there. After our second stop the vibration returned and then the tread separated with a violent crash destroying the entire side of the truck and causing the truck to almost loose control and shake violently. I understand that a large tire co like pirelli has to watch out for their best interest however they should put the customers well being at the top. Ram 2500, our 12 year old son was riding in the back seat of this extended cab pickup truck and was securely fastened into the 3-point seatbelt behind the driver's seat.when we hit a large pothole, his head snapped back and hit the glass rear window.there is no head restraint or head protection of any kind for the rear seat passenger.he suffered a mild contusion.if this was a more severe episode, or an accident, the injuries would have been severe.we need to have head restraint protection made available to us for rear seat passengers immediately.this is a very dangerous situation that we were unaware of when we purchased this vehicle.our dealer tells us there is nothing available through chrysler to fix this problem.

Headlight switch failed to connect 3 or 4 times when pulled as though shaft was simply in a hole.accelerator stuck and i had to brake heavily before it released.
The design of horn button hardens in cold weather causing difficulties locating horn in a emergency.occasionally the horn fails to work properly.the cruise control would gradually decrease without brakes being applied. Taken vehicle to dealer to check.
Speed control adds an additional 7 to 12 mph when it is set.if set at 65 it will go to 72 to 77 before stopping.it stays at 72 to 77 mph for 5 to 10 minutes and then will drop back to the original setting of 65.this is a very dangerous situation and is common in all '98 and '99 dodge rams.dodge must do something to fix this situation.

Rear suspension clunks on turns with ligth/no load in bed. Sounds like the gas tank shifting side to side or spring pack noise. Other owner's i've talked too have same problem. The rear sliding glass window leaks at the top at highway speeds in heavy rain. The two tone paint is fading. You can see the bottom color through the top color. Also, i've hear from several other owners about premature front ball joint failures although i haven't had this problem yet.

1.the passenger side mirror glass on this vehicle, ram 2500 series, has cracked due to the extreme cold conditions in my location.presents an even more and distorted view of the roadway.the product is inferior glass.2.excessive pinging in the 5.9l engine.the manual states that you can use an 87 octane rated fuel in this engine.if you do even without a "load" in the vehicle the engine will constantly "ping."using a higher octane rating the pinging noise is still noticeable.also this engine from the start uses approximately 1/2 - 3/4 of a quart of oil between oil changes.very bad for a new product.3.the same door on the 2500 series (quad cab) ram truck is used on the type of truck that i own, the extended or club cab.however, where there is weatherstripping on the quad cab door on the lower running board sides, (both doors) there is absolutely no stripping on the extended cab doors (club cab).this allows for the infiltration of dirt and water to actually come up and sit or reside on the top plate.this makes for a bad situation not only for the cleanliness of the truck on those panels but for corrosive qualities as well.

We had aaa tow the van to a dodge dealer in bourbon, mo. The next day the machanic found the problem. The asd 20amp fuse blew, the asd fuse is located uder the hood in the power distribution center. The asd fuse handles engine controls/fuel pump. The dealership in burbon could not find the problem, but he did give us extra fuses to get us home. We had to stop at walmarks to buy extra fuses. On the way home the asd fuse blew out 4 times. When we got back home, i took the van back to the dealer where i bought it for repair, cumberland valley motors, they answered with their stock quote, unable to duplicate at this time. I don't know if the asd fuse blew out due to engine heat, bad wiring, or if the interior control panel which handles the interior lights/tv/vcp has a short in it. After a major rainstorm, i discovered that bothfront and rear windshields leak.dealer says this is not a warranty part.i believe this to be a manufacturer's defect.
Transmission shifts late on certain occasions jumping into gear, diagnostics' were performed by dealership resulting in a negative result, the truck still persist's with the problem usually at speeds' 35 mph and under. The truck has pulled right upon delivery, dealership replaced calipers stating that the o.e.m. Calipers were seized from factory, three days later the problem was back, dealership performed alignment, problem still persisted and continues to do so. The reason i put power steering down under the comments section is because of my belief that the problem resides in the steering gear-box, which has not been checked. The back-up lights did not work upon delivery but were fixed immediately and have been fine ever-since. The drver-side window molding leaks and on certain days causes fogging of the window resulting in a loss of vision and an unsafe driving condition. O.e.m. Jackstand is also to short to replace tire on independent front suspension.

Studs keep breaking on the front wheels.in november 2002 right front studs "fell off" as a mechanic was taking the tires off as part a maintenance inspection.items replaced.in march 2002, i was replacing the calipers and as i placed the lug wrench "manual type" on the lug nuts two fell off from the front right and one from the front left.i am not sure if the two front right were the same ones that were replaced in nov 2002.i am currently working with a dealership to have the broken studs replaced.would like further information if available as it concerns me that they may pop while driving and i may loose a tire.thank you for your time.
