On may 10th, 2004, i was driving my 1998 dodge 3500 and traveling south on hwy 116 approximately 5 miles from copperas cove when i left the road due to a medical condition.the final spot of the truck was about 50 feet off the roadway in a stand of medium size trees.there was direct frontal impact however the drivers air bag did not deploy.i have stitches, multiple lacerations, bruises, black eyes on my face. I am in a cervical collar and have reoccuring and continuous headaches and dizziness.i was taken to the emergency room and later released.
Driver had a frontal collision with another vehicle.driver was driving approximately 50 mph at time of incident, and the air bags did not deploy.driver hit windshield.
Consumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle in front at an impact of 30-40 mph, and neither frontal air bag deployed. Consumer reported no injuries.dealer was notified.the consumer stated that damage to vehicle $9607.80using recycled parts.chrysler notified the dealer stating parameters for airbag deployment were not met.the consumer stated the the vehicle has been repaired but does not know if the air bags work or not.*tc
Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision with a tree at 50 mph and neither air bag deployed. Dealer and manufactuerer were notified. Consumer stated that before hitting tree head on, truck hit pickup at 70 mph and air bags also failed to deployed. There were 2 injuries.

While driving on highway approaching an intersection, another vehicle failed to yield the right of way while coming offa side road, came across the road, and consumer hit theother vehicle ondriver's side left quarter. Upon impact, neither airbag deployed.
The electrical wires became very hot and melted, and shorted out the head light switch and disabled the parking lights.
On three different occasions the retaining nut for fifth-gear has failed.dealer offered repair kit... Contained new main shaft for tranny. Cost was $3600.00, chrysler refuses to acknowledge defect in manufacturing of thread tapering.there is also no power brakes.abs seems to not be working, relies on pressure from oil to brake.if pressed continuously, will go all the way to the floor.wiring harness burned up after dealer work, frank shoupe of georgetown kentucky refused to repair their mistake.said it was my fault, then refused to keep speaking with me.stated replacement was $2015.00, and would take a week;received one from junkyard in montana, took three days, and $300.00.
At least the third time i have replace the headlight switch, twice the harness because it melted together. And now today having to replace marker wire (green with white stripe) and it is to hot to touch, the wire has gone stiff and hard and i am afraid it will cause a fire this time.
Dt*: the contact stated after the vehicle was parked for two days, the alarm suddenly sounded.by the time the door was opened, smoke had filled the cab.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who determined the wiring harness under the driver seat shorted out causing the wires to burn.the dealer replaced three wiring harnesses, the fuse box and the fuses.
Dashboard cracked and caved in when i hit a bump while driving approx 68 mph on the freeway (i- 15 northbound through las vegas).plastic falling into the dashboard area disconnected several wires causing the headlights to go out as well as several other electrical accessories.freeway was well lit enough for me to stop safely and call for assistance.
Dt: the contact started vehiclein order to move it. Then, heturned the vehicle off. The starter kept running, causing the vehicleto catch on fire. The fire was extinguished. The vehicle wastowed to a dealership to be inspected. They found the fuel shut off solenoid shorted out. The manufacturer was contacted.
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram 3500. The contact stated that the headlights and running lights failed to activate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the wiring melted to the connector and the internal switch was melted. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
While drivingvehicle caught on fire in the engine compartment due to a malfunction within themain fuse wiring harness.please give any further details.
1998-2001 b-van (dodge full size)bs control module is protected with a 40 amp fuse. A 10 ga. Wire comes out of the control module then the wire "y"'s out to two 14 ga. Wires. It appears as though the abs pump or relay sticks on these vehicles. Then one of the 14 ga. Wires over heats and starts the wiring harness on fire. The 40 amp fuse does not blow. The fire continues until the entire van is fully enguled in flames.
These are 2 trucks of the same kind we owned that caught on fire in the same way.
Consumer exited vehicle, and when he came back the interior of the vehicle was on fire which started in the left front dashboard area. (ohio traffic report#10-90-733)
Burning odor and light smoke from dashboard.all lights going on and off.turned of headlights and burning odor and smoke stopped.went to dodge dealer to check for recall - manufacturer's recall 819 was for similar problem but only applied to model years 1994 - 1997. This truck was 1998 model. Purchased new headlight switch and replaced the burned switch along with some burnt wiring.
Thin stream of white smoke emitting from dashboard.headlight switch shorted out causing wires to burn behind dash.very close to an electrical fire.have heard other dodge pickup owners having same difficulty (at least 3 that i know).please investigate this problem!
-the wiring of the headlight harness switch burned on the contact's 1998 dodge ram 3500. Therewasa recall for this failure, but thisvehicle wasnot included due to the vin.the dodge dealer refused to acknowledge that the prior years vehicles and this truck were having the same failures and refused to honor the recall. He called dodge, and they also refused to honor the recall. He had to repair the vehicle at his own cost.

The contact owns a 1998 dodge 3500.the contact stated that the vehicle would surge between 4,000 and 5,000 rpms while driving less than 50 mph.the dealer adjusted the computer module.on a separate occasion, the vehicle rapidly surged and behaved as if it were going to stall.the contact found a recall letter and the manufacturer stated that there were no open recalls for his vin.nhtsa campaign id number 98v209000 (engine and engine cooling:engine:diesel) was referenced.the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 105,000.
Owner of vehicle had a routine oil change done. While driving owner noticed thatoil gauge dropped, and vehicle was losing oil.
Fuel tank sensor failed, resulting in a leak.also vehicle overheated.

My vehicle completely stalled and lost power at 70 mph leaving me with no power steering or power brakes. I was barely able to force the vehicle into the breakdown lane.i brought it to a dodge dealer where it cost me $3,700. For an ecm computer and injector pump for this diesel engine. Eight months previous i had replaced the lift pump at a cost of over $800.i now understand that the nhtsa has earlier investigated this diesel engine and found no 'safety' problem relating to this failure. I further understand that there was a 'limited' recall performed by cummins, the engine manufacturer, which only included school busses and emergency vehicles as well as for their big customers, ups and fedex.is there no consideration of the individual owner's safety? by my research there are 350,000 of these vehicles still on the road (122,000 were repaired under warranty in a dodge 'fix-if-fail' program) with potentially catastrophic safety defects. This is a truly dangerous condition.fortunately for me, i am an above average size male. I'd seriously doubt if a young driver or small individual would have been able to safely navigate this vehicle to the side of the road.conversations with the dodge dealership and with the dodge consumer hotline resulted in their denial of being aware that there is or has been any problem with this vehicle. A blatant lie on at least the hotline supervisor's part.
Front seal of motor busted/know problem with diesels.
Engine has low power and poor fuel economy.15.5mpg on the highway with empty truck.while pulling 6000# trailer, 11mpg and limited to 65 mph speed.much slower on small incline.

Plastic headlight lenses have become cloudy in my 1998 dodge ram 3500, reducing the amount of light substantially.the dealer where it was purchased wants to charge me $186 to replace them.this is a safety issue.dodge used inferior materials in the manufacture of the truck and they should replace them free of charge.they are familiar with the problem, so it is not an isolated incident.
While traveling at night, both headlights would go out. Dealer notified. Ph
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram 3500. The contact began to notice a burning plastic smell from the headlight area when the headlights were turned on for an extended period of time. The failure occurred five times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but no repairs were performed; the failure was repaired by the contact. The current mileage was approximately 220,000. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Driving down intrastate highway in 5th gear, complete loss of power (as if shifting into neutral).vehicle taken to transmission shop...nut holding 5th gear backed off--disengaging 5th gear.this is a well know problem with dodge diesels.dodge introduced a retrofit kit to hopefully resolve problem.if the problem requires a retrofit, why not recall the transmissions and fix the problem. A nut backing out cost me $1400 plus 2 weeks of no vehicle...an phelps.
Headlights keep going out because a wire is melting the switch.consumerstates headlight doesn't have a relay.there is a recall for 1997. Consumer was advised by the service manager that some of the early 1998 model didn't have the relay protection on the light switch. There has been a recall on the 1997 models, the problem was corrected on the 1998's.they refuse to correct the relay switch on consumers vehicle even though the vehicle does not have the corrected switch.consumer has paid for three new siwtches plus pigtails.the last time the switch burned out it caused a dead short in the wiring.*jg

Takata recall sitting in park and the transmission bucked tried to go forward even against the brakes
While towing my trailer in 5th gear on a crowded interstate, the gear suddenly failed without warning. I lost power and safely pulled over. The other 4 gears worked to get me home.
Transmission locked up causing vehicle to be stranded with loss of control.
Consumer states that the transmission slipped out of park and into reverse. Dealer and the manufacturer has been notified.*mr
Transmission was hard to shift. Dealer claimed transmissionwas bad. Had to replaced, cost was split between dealer and myself.
2 years ago the 5th gear failed and chrysler covered it the truck was 1000 miles out of warranty.in 8-2001 the part failed again we took it to a trans shop and they fixed it for $213.oo, in 9-2001 it failed again the trans shop that fixed it in 8-2001 would not warrany the nut backing off.so we had to pay $766.oo in 9-2001 this is an ongoing problem with these type vehicles chrysler knows this but they do not want to fix the problem because it would cost alot of money to recall all these vehicles.the problem almost caused us to have a wreck, when you are driving down the interstate at 70 mph and you have to downshift because the 5th gear fails and it is like driving in neutralso you downshift and hope noone is close behind you.there was an 18 wheeler behind us this last time and almost hit us in the rear end.we have 2 children and they were scared to death.chrysler needs to face up to this problem before the children that rides in these vehicles or even adults get killed because chrysler wants to save money.the vehicles with this problem are unsafe and needs to be fixed not at our cost but chryslers expense. I am tired of paying for this problem when chrylser knows that it is a problem.but i got news for chrysler this will be the last chrysler vehicle i own.they are the sorriest people and something needs to be done before someone gets killed.thank you christy houston.
While driving onto a two lane highway vehicle jumped in neutral and lost 5th gear. Also, could not go over 40 mph.

While drivingin 5th gear there was a loss of power as ifin neutral. The other gearswere functional. Dealer said a new lock nut was needed to hold gear in place.
Diesel engine, manual transmission, 3500. The nut that holds the 5th gear on in the transmission comes off while the vehicle is moving at a high rate of speed. Resulting in no 5th gear. It is known that the nut sometimes jams the rest of the transmission, resulting in no transmission at all when moving at a high rate of speed. It has happened to me twice and it is about $600+ to fix each time. I live in california, my business friend in south caroline has had it happened twice also, and he knows of another person in texas that had the same problem. I do not know of too many people that have the same vehicle, so it seems strange that the one person i do business with on the other side of the country has the same problem and that he knows of someone else in another part of the country with the same problem. The pick up spends 1 or 2 days in the shop, they replace the nut, and that's it. The second time they replaced the nut, i think they put locktite on it. The old part is not available, but my work orders from the dodge service departments are. I am not sure of the exact dates of both occurrences, it is all filed away, but if you want, i can dig them up for you.
5th gear suddenly ceased to work on my very well maintained 36,000 mile 98 dodge 3500 manual drive truck. My father and i were nearly in a multiple 18 wheeler crash on a bridge before we were able to finally limp along.i now come to realize that there is a service bulletin on this very problem ( 21-10-98a ) which was ignored by the manufacturer.it nearly cost my family dearly. *ph
While driving, the vehicle lost fifth gear, it was confirmed by the dealer that the nut backed off the gear.nlm
Driving down highway at 65 mph, 5th gear disengaged--(as if shifted into neutral).taken to transmission shop, told bolt holding 5th gear backed off.told there is a retrofit kit available to hopefully fix the problem and prevent re-occurance.this is a common problem with dodge diesel/5 speed combos.this bolt (known defect) cost me$1400 and 2 weeks with no vehicle.
Loss of fifth gear (manual transmission) while going up a mountain on interstate 25 in wyoming resulting in rapid deceleration of vehicle. The problem was recognized by chrysler in 1994 and service bullitens where issued to dealers. I have discussed this with numerous owners of this same model and have found it to be a common problem encountered at various mileages. Chrysler refuses to do anything about due to "out of warranty" status, the repair would be performed no questions asked if within the warranty period.

The front seat belts lock up and cannot be used or tighten up to where you have to unlatch them due to the seat belt motor sensor in my 98 dodge 3500.they are unpredictable and make it unsafe to use them when you do and it is unsafe not to use them.dodge is very aware of the problem since the have since returned to using manual seat belts but don't want to fix the problem in these vehicles, and charge the vehicle owners to repair the seat belts since the laws require them.
The seat belts will not extend. The dealer advised that the little pin is broken and will not let the belts extend. Why would this pin become defective? why would both seat belts have the same problem at the same time?the passanger side is rarely used. This problem was noticed when the vehicle was new but i thought it was the temp. In the truck which was rather high. The dealer advised the costs to replace the seat belts would be over $600.00. These should not go bad and become unusable.dt
While trying to put seat belts on theylocked up. Consumer unable to put seat belt on. Seat belt would not come out of seat due to malfunction in the motor.this is a common problem that manufacturer is aware of and refuses to rectify.
Takata recall sitting in park and the transmission bucked tried to go forward even against the brakes
The contact owns a 1998 dodge ram 3500. While driving 5 mph, the vehicle pulled to the right independently. While making a left turn, the front passenger side wheel detached. The anti-brake and brake system warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the wheel bearing failed due to the tie rods and the wheel hub needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the tie rods were not replaced. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 08e027000 (steering). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 173,000.

Electric brakes on both axles of the fifth wheel, hydraulic brakes on my truck w/ abs on the rear duels--no abs on the front wheels--applied the brakes failed to slow down--manually applied the electric brakes--control head of the electric trailer brakes malfunction, no electric trailer brakes--the increased pressure on the foot brake locked up the front wheel leaving me skidding on the front tires w/ loss of control over steering--when the front wheels locked the rear duel abs failed to function and i skidded into the car in front at around two to three mph

The service brakes fail completely often. I believe that it's in the antilock system however when i take it for evaluation & repair the problem cannot be duplicated. This has caused numerous near collisions and i haven't found a way to repair it yet. The dealer says they cannot replace suspected parts issues without a recall being issued. The 1st failure occurred at about 19,000 miles and has happened approximately 14 times between then and 102,000 miles now.
Consumer had an accident and air bags did not deploy.-also the rear brakes did not engage, causing vehicle to lose control and collide, resulting in 3 injuries.
When parking appliedbrakes and steering wheel locked up. Also, it speeded up to 20mph when applying the brakes and going around a curve. Contacted dealer.
While turning left at 10 mph the brakes failed, causing consumer's vehicle to rear end another vehicle. The vehicle was towed the second time.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

When applying the abs, pedal traveled to the floor, causing extended stopping distance and resulting in a collision.
When coming to a complete stop andpressing the brake pedal, the rear brakes will lock up and the brakes will fade out.
While braking low speed abs brakes engaged. This caused extended stopping distance.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Dodge fails to admit a problem with rear anti-lock brakes because i didn't find the unused brakes within the warranty. Several other people have had similar experience on other makes with rear abs. My worry is i'm not the only on driving with defective brakes. Dodge sent a service bullitin to dealers but not to inform consumers.

Driving on a highway traveling at 75 mph, the vehicle suddenly shook violently and it was very difficult to keep a grip on the steering wheel or switch to the brake pedal.i was thrust around in my seat and items from under the back seat were thrown forward into the dash of the vehicle as well.vehicles around me also noticed and slowed down and steered clear of my vehicle. I was able to slow to a stop at the curb and it stopped.that was the first incident.i did look over the front end and felt the tie-rods, ect to test and everything is tight as it should be and nothing visible to cause this problem.it happened again a week later traveling at 65 mph.it has occurred occasionally since those incidents in june and the speed seems to be less each time. I have avoided driving it for fear i will wreck and kill myself or someone else.i have researched and found it is the "death wobble" that chrysler has been investigated for and did a recall on.but, the recall does not cover all second generation dodge pickups, such as mine.this must be noticed and the recall must cover all trucks in the second generation class as well.i will sue if i wreck this truck during a death wobble.

Events are that the dashboard began to crack, crumbling small pieces into the electrical wiring, air bag vicinity, and even into the floorboard.eventually, huge chunks of plastic has fallen into the cavities, impeding braking, and causing concern of fire under the dashboard area.care must be taken not to touch the dashboard or your hand will go through what remains of it.
Floor board is cracking around the front seats.

Dashboard is disintegrating and has sharp shards that cuts hands when cleaning it.
Fuel system is marketed to consumers as being more energy efficient however consumer's vehicle does not experience energy efficiency.
Broken dash. I bought trk new in 98. In 2000 i found a crack in my dash. I went to my local dealer and the serv. Mngr. Advised it was a cosmetic issue therefore not covered by warranty. I did not replace dash as it was quoted as over 750 to r/r. Over years it has gotten worse. For last couple of years small pieces of the dash would blow out of the a/c vents striking me in the face while driving. Very dangerous issue.
