Recall 01 v 153 000/clockspring material, air bag sensor light remains on while driving. Dealer notified.
I would like to know the minimum collision speed at which the airbag deploys for my vehicle.
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500.while driving 55 mph, the air bag suddenly deployed without an impact or crash.the contact maintained control of the vehicle, although his hand was injured.he steered the vehicle to the side of the road, tied the air bag to the steering wheel, and drove to his residence.he then drove to the dealer and was advised to call the manufacturer.the manufacturer stated that they could not assist because the previous owner ignored the recall notice.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure mileage was 175,000.
Consumer was sitting further than 12 inches from the driver's airbag when it deployed, causing severe burns, burning through layers of skin on his left arm and wrist.
Truck rear ended another vehicle, and the air bags did not deploy. Also, thepassenger's seat lock did not hold.
Consumerhit a railing on an icy road, and the air bag did not deploy.
Consumer was involved in a in head on collisiontraveling at very high speed in which the driver's side air bag did not deploy, resulting in injuries to the driver's side occupant.alsovehicletotaled.please provide any further details.
When the consumer pulled out of a gas station, there was a smellof plastic burning.suddenly flames appeared under the hood. The mechanic stated the main bolt for the 120 amp vibrated off, which caused the wiring to heat up and catch fire.
Travelling at night with high beams engaged when all lights went out. I made an emergency stop by the side of the freeway and the lights came back on. I proceeded and a few minutes later it happened again. Eventually i determined that it i left the high beams off it would not happen.took truck to dealership and they diagnosed and replaced the multi function switch. Problem recurred about 1 month later. Replaced multi function switch on my own this time. Problem recurred again after about 6 months, this time hot/burning wires could be smelled. Took vehicle to independent mechanic and they finally diagnosed and replaced light switch in dash. By this time one of the wires had nearly burned all the way to the main harness. Replaced switch and all fine for about 2 years then it happened again. Been living with no high beams waiting for time to rig a relay to take load off switch. Chrysler has a recall for this problem but will not honor it due to my vin not being one of the targeted models... Complete [xxx]!
Headlights stopped working while driving at night. Headlight switch is not safe to handle load of electricity from the headlight and marker light wires. I have replaced switch 4 times and still same problem. Lights stop working because the switch melts and begins to burn. The recall for 1997 dodge ram headlight switch should have been extended for all models built in that year.
The outer dash silencer pad caught on fire and burned the clutchand fuel lines. It fried the computer, the occupants were almost killed.there was a recall issued #737, in august 1997.the customer was not notified of the recall.the consumer paid all repairs out of pocket.the manufacturer was notified, but the claim was denied.chrysler will not help the consumer with the repair bills, tom kelly made adecision and the consumer was told that he does not communicate with people and his decision was final.the consumer had no problems with vehicle before the incident and was out of state when it happened.the consumer realized the recall was for dodge trucks built march 7, 1997 through may 15, 1997 andthe consumers vehicle was built on may 16, 1997.the alternator was inoperative due to a bad pcm which was replaced.the a/c had become inoperative after the pcm was replaced. *sc

The specifics on the functions that failed were not available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 225,000.
1997 dodge ram 2500, with overheating head lamp switch. Concerns with the potential for fire!
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact noticed small cracks in the instrument control panel cluster. The cracks manifested into large, triangular, sharp, plastic chunks that are falling inward into the vehicle and also flying through the window when he was driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated there are no recalls or warranty on the vehicle and he would have to pay for the repairs. He notified the manufacturer who stated they had calls in regards to the failure, but they did not provide any assistance. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage 100,000.
Battery & ignition failed.
Horn and horn button failed. Yh
Horn is not loud enough. It can barely be heard above the sound of the engine at idle.drive rhad two incidents where he had to use the horn where the other driver apparently could not hear it. It could result in a collision.

Dt:consumer noticed there was smoke coming from the dashboard above the headlight switch while driving.immediately consumer turned the engine and the headlights off.after a couple of minutes it stopped smoking.after waiting several minutes, the engine started, but the headlights would not come on.consumer called dealership, and was informed that there was no recall for make and model.dealership has not checked this vehicle.consumer checked the nhtsa website and found a recall for the 3500 series but not the 2500 series.discovered this is not an isolated incident.vehicle has not been repaired yet due to expense.
The engine would not stop running. Wiring to fuel solenoid started burning. Engine started to shutdown and the starter engaged. This appears to be common because a cummins dealership mentioned that it happens often on dodge trucks and so did another dodge dealership once the vehicle gets around or above 75,000 miles. The new solenoid is different from the original. How ever dodge says that the vehicle is out of std warranty and will not assist. If reserached you will find that in other applications this engine does not appear to have a problem with the solenoid.
Around 6 months ago a plume of thick black smoke exited the engine compartment.i inspected the engine but could not locate the source and figured it might have been something falling on the exhaust system.recently i discovered melted and corroded wires leading to the fuel preheater.no fuse was blown.i have not taken this vehicle in for repair yet, so the cost estimate is simply a guess.if a short existed in the preheater, then the fuse should have blown.either the fuse is to large, or the wire size is too small for the application.
Engine: experienced a fire under the hood. A mechanic stated that the fire took place because of the cheap material that is used for the firewall.
Wiring harness and relays burnt damaging battery.
While driving 45 mph consumer saw flames underhood. Dealer replaced relay switch and solenoid.
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that the entire dashboard was cracked, to the point that pieces detach when going over a bump. The contact also stated that the front-end suspension was fractured, making it impossible for the vehicle to drive in a straight line. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures.the failure mileage was not available. Updated 03/09/16*lj
While driving home late one evening in late november 2004, the lights on my dodge ram 2500 went completely out.with this loss of lighting i was forced off the road, fortunately i was able to safely stop the vehicle without serious consequence.the fault was the main light switch failure (shorting out) creating a short and small fire in the dash.this is the third switch i have replaced in this vehicle.i researched this type of failure and have found that is a fairly common occurrence in the ram trucks.i would like to know if there is anything which can be done to make this a safer vehicle to operate.
Accelerator pedal is too loose or soft, and on a rough terrain pulling a trailer, it makes the truck start to hop.when it makes the truck hop, it causes the rear axle driveline seal to leak oil.the factory installed thermostat is faulty and makes the temperature go up and down by about 40 degrees.had it replaced and it corrected the problem.
Consumer states that the intake gaskets blew while driving causing engine to stall.consumer narrowly avoided a collision. Ts
1997 dodge ram 2500 experiencing engine problems.*mr consumer backed out the driveway and as the vehicle reached the street, the engine died. Consumer started the vehicle, at first it seemed to have choked then went on fine. The consumer decided to get another vehicle because it was acting sluggish.when the consumer arrived to the dip she smelled fumes. It wasn't gas but an oily smell, it lasted a few seconds. Consumer wasn't sure if it was her vehicle because the vehicle in front of hers had a smoking tailpipe. The consumer decided to pulled over and phoned a wrecker. Before she could pull over other drivers and by-standers were informing her of smoke. She didn't smell or see any smoke. Within seconds the entire front of the vehicle caught fire. The consumer turned the vehicle off and opened the door. Flames were coming from under the vehicle as well.she jumped and landed on the grassand that's when she heard a loud bang, looked back and the entire front and inside front of the vehicle was on fire. Upon returning home she checked the driveway for any fuel leakage but there wasn't any. *ph
Intermittently, the accelerator pedal would stick when placed into gear and the consumer had to apply pressure to the accelerator to release it.subsequently, it releases suddenly in a way which caused sudden acceleration.the dealer completedthe recall work on the vehiclein fall 2002 after which the problem surfaced.the dealer refused to repair the problem.the vehicle stalled when the a/c was on.(stalled continually) *scc
My dodge 1997 ram 2500truck with 8.0l v-10 engine suffered sudden and complete loss of oil pressure and subsequent engine seizure on 13 august 2005.the truck had 74254 miles on the odometer at the time of the engine failure.the oil level in the engine was normal (full) at the time of the failure.after the engine failure, the truck was towedto the dodge truck dealer in bozeman, montana. I was advised by the assistant service manager that he had seen several dodge truck v-10??s with seized engines due to oil pump failures but he knew of no factory program to correct the problem. Within a few days the dealer provided an estimate of $9461 to replace the engine with a mopar rebuilt engine and provide a 3-year warranty on the work. Given the relatively high repair cost quoted by the dealer, and an apparent lack of any factory program to cover even a portion of the repair cost, i elected to have the engine rebuilt by a local independent repair shop.during disassembly of the engine, it was found that one of the gears in the oil pump had fractured (broken) in several places. These fractures caused a sudden and completely unexpected failure of the oil pump, a complete loss of engine oil pressure, and subsequent seizure of the engine a few seconds of operation later. The oil pump gearswerephotographed and these images can be provided. The inner gear is broken in several pieces. All of the oil pump parts are available for inspection. Since oil pump gears are internal engine parts not subject to routine periodic maintenance and not subject to abuse by the vehicle operator, the failure is clearly due to material defect or manufacturing defect.a sudden and unexpected engine seizure in a highway vehicle is a serious safety issue. Since the reported 8.0l v10 engine seizure is not an isolated case, you should consider an immediate product recall of dodge trucks with the 8.0l v10 engine, or other corrective action, to reduce future occurrences of the same problem.
When driving at hwy speed there is a loud knocking noise coming from the engine due toengine rodcompletely malfunctioning.
Without warning, the vehicle stalled while the consumer was driving at an undetermined speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on two occasions, however they were unable to resolve the problem. The vehicle had a faulty crack shaft position sensor, the coolant level was too high in the pressure reserve tank and the cylinder heads were replaced.
50,284 mileage with cracked block from one core plug to the other.
1997 dodge 2500 4x4 pickup with cummins turbo diesel.purchased new nov 1996.owned 6 years with 92k miles on truck at time of incident.while driving on the highway, the upper timing case housing alignment dowel pin fell into the rotating timing gears.the pin jammed between the upper gear and the case causing a 1" by 3" hole in the case.oil splashed out of this hole (approx two quarts) until i completed my return from work.i noticed a big puddle of oil under the truck later that night and upon inspection found the hole in the timing case.after further investigation, this turns out to be a well known issue with these motors (model year 1997 until mid 1998 when the design was changed).in fact, the incidence of this failure is so widespread that owners of these model trucks have developed a kit to locate and drill a "blocker bolt" to keep the dowel pin from falling out!damiler/chrysler claims no knowledge of this issue (i opened ticket #10864363 with their customer service center).cummins is aware of the problem but says it's statistically insignificant and has not initiated any recall.
Vehicle engine compartment fire resulting in the destruction of vehicle.
Vacuum leak in engine/lost cruise control/engine was knocking at 30 mph or higher, and leaking gasoline on top of motor. Also, when applying gas, air vents would go to defrost automaticaly.
Fan belt failed.yh
Egr system is poorly designed resulting in multiple failures, fumes entered into engine compartment causing damage. Mjs
Engine exhaust manifold failure.
While driving on highway owner began smelling unknown odor. Pulled to gas station and found that the exhaust pipe had burned insulation within 3 to 4 inches of firewall. Rug inside compartment retained heat.had wrong insulation on firewall. Supposed to be aluminum insulation. Instead, had soft black insulation. Vehicle caught on fire.
Tape player inoperative.
Stereo and cd player failed.
Radio failed.
Cd player, which is factory installed, failed to work properly.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that the headlights failed to function properly. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was found that the headlight switch had failed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 225,000.
Headlights will either flicker or go completely off while in usedue to a malfunctionin the headlight switch. This causes poor visibility.there isrecall 99v024000,but this vehicle is not included in the recalldue to vin.
Headlight switch shorted out, rendering headlights inoperable.a recall has been issued onvehicle's make and model; however, this vehicle was not included due tovin.
The motorized exterior rear view mirrors moved to an inward position by themselves while the vehicle was in motion, this resulted in no visibility, the dealership replaced the mirrors but the problem recurred.*nlm mirrors replaced again.headlights failed.multifunction switch replaced.passenger side window won't go down when using switch.
Throttle on 1997 dodge ram 2500 diesel sticks at wide open throttle and won,t come back. This has happened three times. The first time the dealer freed up the linkage. The second time they replaced the linkage. The third time they freed up the new likage.
Fuel guage is broken for the second time.first was under warranty in 1999.the sending unit was replaced.now it is broken again but the dealer says it is out of warranty and will cost $$$.after speaking with other owners and some mechanics i found this to be a common problem and feel it sould be a recall item.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that the fuel tank detached from the vehicle as a result of the straps being corroded. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop who diagnosed that the straps were broken due to corrosion. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 108,000.
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. While driving approximately 65 mph, the contact noticed an overpowering gasoline fuel odor in the vehicle. He later discovered a fuel leak and contacted the manufacturer in regards to the failure. The manufacturer advised that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 97v199000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) and any repairs would be at the contacts expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
Fuel lines. Vapor lock fuel system.
Consumermade several appointments for recall repairs, but everytime consumer arrived for appointment part was not available.dealer ship was not aware of consumer having an appointment.
Fuel injection pump went out, causing fuel a leakage.
While driving, and while parked the driver noticed a fuel smell coming from the vents area.the vehicle was parked in the garage.the driver got unto the ground and look underneath the vehicle and noticed a gasoline leak.the driver will contact the dealer.please fill in additional information.
One of the straps that hold the tank up to vehicle broke and causedrear of tank to hang down. Consumer could hear metal shield of driveline hittinggrond. Please provide any further information.
While driving down driveway heard as loud noise. Consumer got out of vehicle, and notice a trail of fuel on ground. Fuel tank had dropped under vehicle. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information.
Problems with 1997 dodge 2500 pickup.*mr the consumer noticed a fuel smell, he left the vehicle at idle and discovered fuel on the ground. The consumer discovered two metal elbows one was attached to the sending unit located on top of the fuel tank and the other was attached to the fuel line, the second elbow developed a cracked and leaked which was caused by salt material used on the highways.the consumer had to purchase the entire sending unit just to replace the two metal elbows.
Rear retainer strap that holds the fuel tank broke, causing fuel tank to drop, which may cause an accident. Please provide further information.
There is a constant leak in the gas tank which strong fumes are in air, as well as in interior of vehicle.. Consumer sated fuel tank filler was replaced.*mj
The front fuel tank strap broke, causing the front end of the fuel tank to drop down to the road surface.friction against the road surface caused a hole to form in the tank, allowing fuel to leak out.looking at the fuel tank strap, it appears that there had been a crack across approx. 50% of the width for some time due to the formation of rust seen in the cross section.
Gas guage does not work. This is a common problem with these dodge trucks, dodge should do something about it. There is no way to tell the amount of fuel left in the tank.
Fuel gauge is erratic. Gage reads full when tank is full. 50 miles later it reads empty and the fuel warning light comes on.
Gasoline gauge needle doesn't work.needle of the gauge doesn't show correct amout of gasoline.
1997 dodge diesel 2500:fuel line directly behind drivers side front wheel has a hole worn in it by way of contact with neighboring fuel or other line.the neighboring line has a connector or fitting that through vibration and direct contact has worn a hole in the metal fuel line.the line is pressurized adn releases diesel fuel through the hole onto the vehicle frame and undercarriage.rate of leakage is suffucient to release approximately one gallon of fuel in a 20 minute period.line is also corroded from years of winter road surface treatment and may have contributed to the wear of the line.however there is no question that contact between teh two lines is the main reason for the damage line and fuel leak.the vehicle is being repaired at the dodge dealer in culpeper virginia, during the week of september 15, 2003.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked for several weeks and approximately one quarter tank of gasoline evaporated. The failure recurred fifteen times. The vehicle was taken to two different dealers but neither could determine the cause for the failure. Fifteen years passed and the contact began to smell gasoline when exiting the vehicle. He also noticed gasoline fuel leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the fuel pump was leaking and based on the components that were surrounding the fuel pump, had been leaking for quite some time. The pressure relief roll over valve was identified as the cause of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 6 and the current mileage was 43,385. Updated 6/14/13
Emergency brake failure caused truck to roll backwards out of driveway through a board fence down a hill off of a 8 ft. Cliff landing on rear bending bumper down and shoving bed in the cab and landing inches from the river!dt
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500.the contact attempted to apply the parking brake, but the brake failed to engage.the regular brakes work, but the parking brake does not.the vehicle cannot be parked on an incline because it will roll.dodge has not been notified.the current and failure mileages were 133,000.

The transmission failed due to a leak.*nlm
Transmission has been serviced or repaired four times.
Transmission failed to shift correctly under normal driving circumstances. Vehicle was still under warranty so we took it to wester dodge in seaside, ca for repair.service dept changed the valve body, wasn't at seals had internally failed. Replaced the whole transmission. Two years later same problem arises at this time vehicle warranty is up. Dodge dealer refuses to repair and warrant problem. Took truck to certified transmission in gilroy, ca .they found that the seals were bad in transmission and broken bell housing and overdrive housing bolt holes were stripped.
Transmission slips. Dealer contacted, put on computer and stated there was nothing wrong. Driving down a hill represents a big problem whenpulling a trailer.it will not hold back. Consumer has to rely on brakes in order to come off of a hill. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.torque converter unlocks at any speed when decelerating, vehicle will not hold back even when in first gear, when towing a trailer and traveling downhill, the brakes have to be used, dealer states this is the way they are built.
Transmission seal failure.
This is fifth time that his vehicle has been in repair shop for transmission.when shifting gears there is a clunking noise, and there is leaking underneath. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
While driving 70 mph on highway vehiclewent into neutral, and wouldn't go into fifth gear. Also,a nut fellout of transmission. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated it wascommon accurrence in that type of transmission.
Transmission slips after parked for three days.
On four occasions after encountering rough pavement or railroad tracks the front end of the veh has started to shake violently, necessitating coming to a complete stop to regain control.had steering damper and traction bar replaced at 36768 miles.again at approximately 45100 miles had same violent shaking of front end when crossing railroad tracks.feels as if truck is flying apart and out of control until able to come to complete stop.selling dealer has recommended replacing steering stabilizer. The two metal transmission oil cooler lines were installed during truck assembly without sufficient spacers to prevent abrasion against each other.this allowed one line to rub a hole into the side of other line resulting in transmission fluid being sprayed against hot engine compontents and could have resulted in damage to the transmisson or a fire in the engine compartment.
Transmission cooler line needs replacing. The cooler line has a plastic coupling in it that could melt and cause a fire or sudden loss of transmission under load.dealer will replace a cooler line on a gasoline engine per recall but not on a diesel. My truck is a diesel, and think that the line should be replaced as the plastic coupling melted on a friends truck that is the same as mine (diesel). I called the dodge dealer and they will not replace the coupling/line as not gasoline engine. I feel this is a safety hazard effecting all modles with this plastic copuling.
Four wheel drive unit jerking.
While driving 55 mph consumer heard a noise coming from the rear.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pulled over.consumer noticed thatrear axlebroke.vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic informedconsumer that the parts were not available.
While driving 45mphthe atni-lock rear brakewarning light came on. A few minutes later, while pulling out at a stop sign the rear differential made a loud noise. The rear differential had "came out"for lack of a better term. I have all the parts and pieces from the differential. The pinion gear was in pieces in the bottom of the housing. The ring gear had several teeth missing and/or damaged. The anti-lock brake sensor/equipment was also damaged.the only parts that were not replaced were the axles and the housing. Cause of the defect is still yet undetermined.
Oil leaks from rear axle and causes rear brakes to malfunction.
Front axle and brakes system have been replaced three times. When consumer was driving at any speed and applied the brakes the front end of the vehicle was bouncing.dealer couldn'tdetermine the problem.
Consumer has been experiencing problems withaxle anddriveshaft.also, when applyingbrakes, their vehicle pulls to the right.the manufacturer has been contacted.
My abs and brake warning light came on and i lost my abs.in searching for the problem, i found oil dripping from my rear differential cover.i removed the cover and found that a ring gear bolt head had sheared off and damaged the abs exciter ring.the differential could have locked up and caused an accident.a mechanic advised it appeared the bolt failed due to a stress fracture.the dealer would not cover the repair since the vehicle is out of warranty nor would a daimler chrysler rep. I telephonically spoke with.i have the failed part and photos.
Vehicle was making a howling noise inrearend. Consumer was referred to contact a dodge dealeronceindependent mechanic completedrepair.mechanic had seen alot of problems with that model. Mecahnic had to replace bothpinion bearing and axle bearings.
Onthree occasionsrear axle seal had leaked oil onto the brakes, causing brakes to malfunction. A technicianfound this out on a routine inspection.
The brake problem has been on going since the first few month of service.the first brake failure was at 9557 miles, the second failure was at 23,744 miles and the third failure of the brakes was at 29,875 miles.the brakes have been replaced, rotors ground,, new rear axle seals, and new calipers, pads, and brake shoes have been installed.the problem still exists and the dealer in turlock auto center, turlock, ca. Is ordering new parts again making the fourth brakes on this pickup including the original ones.

While driving at freeway speed 5th gear suddenly lets go; acts like suddenly pressing clutch while at speed.problem appears without warning, startles driver and leaves driver without power to avoid vehicles approaching in rear.only response is to move to right without power to avoid accident.had repaired by az dealer first time with "new redesigned" parts and same problem happened exactly one year later on 2/10/00 at 87615 miles.problem fixed with same parts again by ca dealer.this is a safety issue.the truck is not capable of driving in 4th gear at freeway speeds (truck has 4:10 ring and pinion).both transmission mechanics have repaired several vehicles with same problem.
Dt: when shifting from fourth to fifth gear the bolt holding 5th gear in place came off the shaft which allowed the 5th gear to move and no longer be in position to function. This problem feels as if you were shifting from forth gear to neutral instead of 5th gear. Dealer was familiar with this particular problem and indicated that it's common to these vehicles.consumer feels that chrysler should be responsible for a recall and should cover the cost of repairs.*sb
5th gear failed while going down a slight (~4%) grade while using the engine and the exhaust brake. Fortunately the speed was slow enough that it was possible to downshift. I consider this a safety hazard. If the speed had been higher or it was not possible to downshift an accident could have easily occurred. This is not an uncommon problem with the 5-speed transmission in the dodge cummins diesel trucks.there is some information on the internet indicating that this is rather common.this problem appears to be a design flaw. The repair invoice indicates that a 'nut package" was required to prevent this from occuring again. This indicates that the original design is flawed. This should be a recall item, but probably isn't and won't be because of the cost to fix ($675.) i have submitted a complaint and request for repair reimbursement to chrysler. There is a safety standard requiring head restraints to prevent or reduce whiplash injuries yet there is apparently no standard that requires the seat back holding such head restraint to remain standing upright during an accident where such head restraint would be needed. I was rear ended on an expressway. The other vehicle was traveling significantly faster than i was. The impact was severe enough that the interior shelving in my van buckled due to the shock to its load. The driver's seat back recliner stripped completely, allowing the seat back to collapse. In fact, the only thing that stopped the seat from collapsing all the way was the cargo loaded between the seat and the shelves. Instead of a whiplash injury, i received a lower back injury from my back being snapped back at the bottom of the seat. What good is a head restraint if the seat back doesn't hold it up? furthermore, in the search to find a used seat to avoid having to dismantle the seat to replace the stripped recliner, i discovered that all similar dodge vans in the junk yards with the deluxe high back seats are similarly stripped. I searched junkyards despite the police officer who came to the accident scene saying that seats collapsing during rear end accidents was common. Is this another instance of the federal government having its head up its a** like with the firestone tires?
Truck rear ended another vehicle, and the air bags did not deploy. Also, thepassenger's seat lock did not hold.

I purchased a 1997 dodge 2500 ram pickup truck in november of 1996.within a few weeks i experienced a brake failure when i hit the brakes hard. I managed to change lanes to avoid an accident and tried many times after that to get the brakes to fail. But it didn't happen again until almost a year later.same result, no accident and couldn't repeat the problem.i brought the vehicle to the dealer for some warranty work and reported the brake failure to the service manager.they tested the vehicle many times and still could not produce brake failure.the problem occurred eleven times more since the last failure and this time i had an accident.fortunately, i was able to miss the stalled vehicle in front of me by changing lanes and hitting a car along side going the same speed.this resulted in property damage to both vehicles but no bodily injury.if i had continued straight into the stalled vehicle, going about 30-35 mph, i would have caused serious bodily injury to the passengers of the stalled car.my truck has the diesel option and weighs over 9000 pounds.it would have crushed the stalled honda and injured all the occupants.to date, only normal parts replacements have been done on the brake system and the brake computer has never been replaced.the vehicle will be going in to the local dealer for replacement of the brake computer at my cost and my request for replacement.

Brakes pulled hard right, replaced brakes and had them serviced, now they pull hard left. Requires major steering correction to maintain intended vehicle course. A section approximately 6" x 11" has completely broken loose and is lying inside the panel. Many of the other segments have cracked and separated creating knife like points. I own a 1997 dodge ram 2500. I noticed the hitch stinger was angled downward.upon inspection of the hitch (3 bolts per side), at the 90 degree bend of the hitch, the driver side is cracked 7/8 of the length; the pax side is cracked 2 ".one can reasonably conclude that hitches installed on 98 models were made prior to 98, and that a hitch of the same production batch could have been istalled on 97 models.dodge has acknowledged defects on hitches made prior to 98, with confirmed and anecdotal reports of 97 models with similar damage.i would submit dodge corporation, withiincreased numbers of reports of cracks in 97models, and pressure from nhtsa, offer a recall.it is obvious the quality and weight rating of factory installed hitches is not adequate.
The trailer hitch developed two inch cracks in the metalat the 90 degree bend where the hitch bolts to the truck.the cracks are on both left and right sides starting at the rear.a recall has been made for 1998 trucks but not 1997.this defect can cause a total disconnection of the towed trailer since safety chains are also attached to the hitch.
The cup holder in my 1997 dodge ram 3/4 ton pickup is not properly designed. As supplied the cup holder has cut outs on the sides.the cup holder also has a base plate that supports the bottom of the cup. Thebase plate does not allowcups to fit low enough into the holder to enable the front and back portions of the cup holder to make good contact. Taller cups like the typical fast food drink cupis only supported by the bottom with no side support or just around the ring where the cup changes sizes in the case of the larger cups. With the majority of coffee cups the cup holder provides support in only a couple of locations. The problem is when the cup holder is in use as designed and the driver makes a right or left turn at normal driving speeds the cup will flip out of the cup holder spilling the contents on the occupants and the electronic systems of the vehicle. This has happened a number of times in my vehicle. I have not had a motor vehicle accident involving other vehicles but have sustained comprehensive damage due to a soft drink being spilled in the radio/cd/tape player. I have not met anyone yet who owns or owned a dodge pickup of this body style that has not experienced this same problem. An employee at the dealership i purchased this vehicle from in 1998 agreed that the cup holder was unsafe and poorly designed when i brought the vehicle in the first time this happened to me resulting in the destruction of the sound system. When i tried to inform people about the problem the dealer threatened to sue me. The dodge corporation complaint hot line indicated that i was the only person who had ever called and complained when i called in the spring of 1999. *nlm
Frame rusting through and cracked near starring gear box and stabilizer bar bushing mounts.
On trip to camping ground in sierra nevada mountains, started to smell "hot brakes" although i had not been using them at that point.thought brake shoe may be dragging or that it could be another motorist.approached camp ground with growing certainty it had to be my truck.after parking in camping space and shutting down motor, i noticed smoke issuing from under hood.opened hood to investigate and found flames licking up firewall/toe board.inspection revealed that firewall insulation had fallen down onto exhaust pipe and started on fire between the insulation and the toe board/firewall.some exhaust "header wrap" was on the exhaust pipe but it had loosened.the area of contact with the insulation was covered with the "header wrap" but it did no good.i was unable to push the remaining insulation piece out of contact with the exhaust so the return trip home *two days later) was very nerve wrecking.the recall service was improperly done.***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis***762404
The upper dash cover cracking in multiple areas.the cracks started small at the corners of the defrost vents and have extended over the entire area of the dash. The cracks are more severe on the drivers side.
Head liner fell apart.
Recall component failure prior to recall notice resulting in fire, recall repairs after incident were not performed properly (97v-126). Mjs

While proceeding to leave the mall parking lot the accelerator pedal became stuck.as a result the vehicle accelerated out of control and crashed into a parked car.the dealership has been contacted.
While driving throttle will break, and rough idle.please provide more information.
While driving, the vehicle lost speed and would not accelerate.the consumer determined that the accelerator rod broke.the consumer discovered there was a recall regarding the problem, however the manufacturer was not willing to fix it free of charge.
Cruise control speed fluctuates.yh
Truck surges at speeds between 40-65 mph. Throttle linkage failure.
When cruise control is set vehicle will accelerate passed set speed. Dealer replaced cruise controltwice, and problem still exists.
Vacuum leak in engine/lost cruise control/engine was knocking at 30 mph or higher, and leaking gasoline on top of motor. Also, when applying gas, air vents would go to defrost automaticaly.
Cruise control randomly shuts off/starts up again without warning.
Throttle linkage bar has split down the middle. Dealer has been contacted. Consumers vehicle was not part of manufacturer's recall.consumer stated the solid steel linkage cracked int he middle, no acceleration possible.
Consumer stated that cruise control does not function at all.dealer diagnosed as an electrical problem. Ts
The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the pedal remained depressed even after contact removed their foot. The contact had to open the hood and physically engage the throttle cable in order for the pedal to return to normal position. The contact noticed that the throttle cable was frayed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure was reported to the manufacturer. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 142,000.
When the cruise control was engaged the vehicle continued to increase in speed, mostly in cold weather.this was caused by oil from the vacuum pump going into the servo vacuum lines. *nlm
While driving throttle will break, and rough idle.please provide more information.
During cold weather, when i set the cruise contol, the vehicle keeps accelerating past the set point. It doen't stop accelerating at all. I have to cancel the cruise to maintain a speed. After the truck warms up (quite a long time) it functions better, but still may go faster than the set speed.
Dodge pickup 1997 tilt wheel, wires in steering column broke, disabledair bag, electric windows and other stuff.4x4steering is loose lots of steering wheel play to keep vehicle strait on road, like that since new.
Due to a defective heater, the wiring of the electrical control module shorted and burned out the alternator, battery, solenoid, temperature relay and computer module, which resulted in smoke and loss of vehicle power.
Mirror "foldaway" detent failed and mirror folded back and wouldn't stay in proper position.this occurred while towing a travel trailer. This has occured with three different mirrors.the problem exisits with all 1996 and 1997 ram pickups, with power mirrors.
Mirror is inherently defective and blows around in the wind when it fails.employees at dodge dealership acknowledged this is a common problem requiring total replacement of mirror at cost of $250.00 plus labor to install.mirror is subject to fail at any time and for no particular reason.it is safety equipment and should be recalled.
Rear view mirrors vibrate while driving.
Outside rear view mirrors do not stay fixed in place. The wind and shutting the door cause the mirrors to fold inside and require constant readjustment
The reaview mirrors mounted on the outside of the vehicle have, on a daily basis, folded back while the vehicle is going down the roadway.it depends on the speed because the wind is sometimes stronger on other days and the different directions of the wind.i have taken the vehicle to several dodge service shops and they all say that it is a design flaw with the dodge ram vehicles and there is nothing they can do to fix/repair it to make it stop moving.if this is such a problem, why hasn't there been a recall to keep an accident from happening.i can't see the lanes next to me when i am driving down the road when the mirrors fold back and it scares me to change lanes thinking there might be a vehicle beside me that i didn't see when i turned my head to look.this is a major safety problem and could cause accidents if something isn't done.is there any way you could get back with me on this and let me know if there has been a recall i haven't heard about so i can get my van fixed, especially with the upcoming vacation season coming up.
