Occasionally, experience difficulty in starting the engine, stalls immediately after starting and during long distance driving, experience intermittent firing, like trembling.

Several years back ignition switch was recalled for burning up. At that time had replaced ignition switch twice previously. Dodge paid for the switches and labor and replaced ignition switch with new and improved ignition switch. Now approx. 5 to 7 years later ignition switch burning up again taking out door lock, windows, air bag, and abb lights are all on and you cannot operate either window or door lock. Took into shop in spring, texas called rileys of rayford road in spring, texas where they informed me that the ignition switch causing all of these problems and needs replaced again! called demontron dodge in conroe, texas to see about switch replacement. Nothing yet!

I drive quite a bit during the night time with my vehicle. There seems to be a very serious issuse with the wiring over heating at the headlight switch. I have replaced 5 ... Going to be 6 headlight switches. There is a dangerous amount of head being put out at the switch itself. So much that it actually melts the pigtail at the light switch connection. The light switch itself is destroyed. Its bad especcially when driving down the road and your headlamps, marker lights and dash light all go out. If i do not have a replacment part in my truck at the time, i have to find a spot in between switch position just to get my lights operational to "limp" my truck home. My choice of positions when the switch fails is headlamps with out markers and no dash lights or fog lamps markers and dash lights. Being dodge has such terrible headlamps i use fog lights to drive when this happenes. Believe it or not he fog lights are better than the driving lights. I recently saw a recall for dodge durangos with a under dash electrical problem. I would think that this wiring/headlamp switch problem should be a recall!thank you.

Numerous headlight switches replaced due to them burning up to include several inches of the existing wiring harness to switch. I cannot believe that this type of safety issue is not being addressed. You dam sure have knowledge of the problem since the aftermarket auto parts o reilys etc. Carry the switch or switch with wiring harness as an option. After reading here all switches go out about the same... The headlights start going on and off then look for smoke coming from around dash where switch mounted. You can feel the heat from under when switch is burning up. Need a simple relay to stop this show how much dodge loves its customers!

The steering column on this truck has gotten very hot under the ignition switch area. So hot in fact that the wires and plastic column cover have smoked and melted through. I feel there may be a fire soon.the dealership says nothing is wrong with my model year but the melted hole in my steering column says otherwise i've read there was a recall of this nature but was told in no uncertain terms that they would not be helping me.help...

On the morning of 12/7/09 i started my truck to warm it up with the heating fan on high when at some point, somewhere in the wiring harness under the dash overheated and started the interior on fire. Destroying my vehicle. The windshield and driver door windows were broken from the heat but luckily remained intact and not letting air inside to fuel the fire and it eventually extinguished itself.

Consumer stated while driving vehiclecaught on fire.there was a popping noise and smoke started coming from the steering column.the fire originated from the steering column ignition switch.the wiring was melted from the ignition switch to the firewall.the service dealer stated they were not responsible for covering the damage that was caused by the fire.however, they will replace the ignition switch and ignition wiring overlay.

Dt:consumer stated he filed a complaint on 7-16-05 odi # 10129534. He has not heard anything from this yet. He wanted to file another complaint because he says there is a recall on the followingcomponent: electrical system: ignition: switch . Recall #00v135000. When a/c or heater is on the ignition switch will overheat and steering column start smoking, consumer had to buy another switch, and dealer put it on. Original switch could not take all the power coming from all the circuitry.

Starter came on while driving vehicleat 40 mph.i parked vehicle and turned off the ignition switch and removed the key, and starter kept running.smoke was coming from under the hood from the battery cables.i disconnected the batteries and the starter stopped.the dealer said the recall for the ignition switch wiring had nothing to do with the starter. I believe there was a short in the ignition wiring that caused the starter to come on.i can not imagine how a starter solenoid could get powered without turning the ignition switch or a short.

Dodge 1996 2500 cummins diesel - vin - [xxx].started truck, starter remained engaged, turned key off, starter remained on and engine running, smoke rose from the engine compartment, only way engine could be stopped was to disconnect the batteries.by the time batteries were disconnected, the starter, fuel shutdown solenoid, some wiring were burnt up, had to be replaced. Luckily electrical fire went out before igniting diesel fuel.*nlminformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Headlight switch replaced (3) three times. The last time had to replace the cannon plug also due to it burning wires along with headlight switch terminals burned. Talked with other 1994 through 1997 dodge ram 2500 owners and turns out that this problem occurs frequently. Is there anyway something can be done, this could possibly cause a fire an people injured or killed! reference: 854783.

When putting vehicle in reverse and there is a trailer on back, trailer blows the fuse on reverse lights of truck.consumer feels this is very unsafe, could be rear ended.all lights replaced were factory installed.*jg

While driving at 65 mph and with the air conditioner running smoke drifted out of the vents.consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, who determined that wires were burnt in the steering column.

Third engine compartment fire on 1996 dodge p/u w/ deisel engine.i reported to dot on 11-jul-2000 after the second fire.see your reference no 865223.this makes three times the driver could not turn engine off, wiring harnesses overheated causing engine compartment fire.

Driving truck down the road, stopped at a stop light and noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. Got out of truck, pulled hood up and noticed that the fire retarding pad was on fire.truck had to be towed to a mechanic, has not determined was caused the fire.

Front coil spring broke, which caused front end to drop.there is a recall for this problem, but this vehicle is not included although it has the same problem. Also, occupant received a recall for the wiring harness which he never had repaired, and lost the recall notice. Manufacturerstated that this vehicle wasnot included in wiring harness recall.also, 5th gear quit for the second time, first time covered under extended warranty, this time owner must pay for repair.chrysler has issued an updated nut for this problem.*ml

Headlights go on and off over every bump in the road. About 2 years ago i replaced the switch body to fix the same problem, i did not notice if the loom was already failing at that time.when the same problem happened again i investingated a bit further and found the center section of the wire loom was melted and deformed around 2 of the connectors.testing with a volt meter indicates one of the connectors (green wire) is wired to the headlights.the wire also shows signs of excessive heat buildup.i suspect the real problem is a busted relay somewhere else, but havent searched for that yet.this is curiously similar to recall 99v024000.

Consumer states the listed vehicle is used for towing purposes, upon towing vehicle, the automatic circuit fuse blowed, causing loss of braking ability. Consumer has contacted the dealer.control (braking) is lost to the 12,000lb tralier when the abs fuse blows, dealer unable to correct the problem.

Power control module failed.

Normal driving.truck has 138k miles.headlights fail.initially they go off, come on, then go off permanently.can smell smoke from dash wiring harness.manufacturer has a recall #819 that covers the 3500 series trucks with identical wiring and headlight switch part numbers, but will not cover the 2500 series trucks.this is a safety hazard and i have found multiple instances on the internet of other people having the same exact problem.left unchecked, i'm certain this will result in a dash fire, property damage, and possibly death.

The engine raced at a high rpm when it should have been idling as it slowed down.when this occurred, the consumer put the vehicle into neutral which slowed the engine.the dealership performed a diagnostic test in which no failure code was found. The cause of the problem was undetermined.the dealership took an educated guess and replaced the ais motor and tps sensor and did some general cleaning. Thus far the problem hasn't recurred.*la

We have a 1996 dodge truck ram p/u 2500 2door e with 78,155 miles.the sleeve threading for the oil plug to screw into under the oil pan broke during a chrysler mileage driven maintenanceschedule for my ram pickup cummins diesel.there have been 17 oil changes done up to now.the dealership said the breakage was due to wear and tear and was not covered under warranty or maintenance agreement.the dealership gave me 2 options for repair:1.upgrade to the new design oil tank with plug and sleeve threading that eliminated this problem.the old and new oil tank parts are not interchangeable.2.try to use silicone to seal the oil leak.i needed my truck working as it was before the breakage so i paid $923.47 for the upgraded new oil pan design.is this normal for the threads to break after 17 oil changes?we would appreciate any help in determing if this a legitimate cost that we must pay or if the manufacturere is responsible for part of the cost.also, if you know of other agencies that may be able to help us, we would appreciate information about them.

Occasionally, experience difficulty in starting the engine, stalls immediately after starting and during long distance driving, experience intermittent firing, like trembling.

If the vehicle sits for an extended period of time it does not start.it may start up for just a second then cuts off.contacteddealer.when the vehicle is parked on a steep hill andconsumer goes to start it,it takes 5-8 seconds for a vacuum to build up to hold vehicle. Emergency brakes have to be on or the vehicle will roll backwards.this is a characteristic of a diesel engine.

Engine jerks into gear without warning.

Pulling tank in soft field, vehicle got very hot, suddenly was engulfed in flames.

Engine o-ring failure causing leaking.

When engine is cold engine dies when you come to a stop this pickup was taken to coliesum motors on twice while under warranty, the first time they informed me this was normal for a diesel this is the4th dodge diesel i have owned none of the others had this defect. The second time i returned the vehicle they set the idle up to 900 rpm this would push the vehicle thru stop signs and i had to ride the brakes to keep it under 30 mph.every time i return this vehicle to coliesum motors they charge me for some repair that does nothing to repair this defect.this is a very dangerous condition and could result in an accident.i would appreciate any help with this situation. I have contacted chrysler numerous times but they are no help.

Engine is underpowered and experiences poor fuel economy since the vehicle was purchased, the mileage gets better as the engine breaks in.at 40,000 milesa second opinion was given which stated that there were engine problems. The dealer was contacted again, and could not duplicate the problem.the warranty has expired.

The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 2500.while attempting to downshift at an unknown speed, the contact noticed that the clutch would not engage into any gears.he was forced to use the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 151,000.updated 8/28/09 the consumer stated the exhaust flange was leaking, which in turn melted the hydraulic clutch line which was plastic and within inches of the exhaust. My truck developed a running problem and i took it to the dealer and i was told that the converter is plugged. Then i was also told that since i put a non chrysler part on my truck which caused the failer that they was going to void my warrenty. Well the part i put on is a set of carb. Certified cat forward headers. I did not alter the exhaust system. The factory converter remained and untouched. I went to chrysler with info from the header manufactor and with the magnuson moss act that says the dealer can not void my warrenty for putting this product on my truck. It also states that the dealer has to prove that the part i put on my truck was the reason for the converter failer. Which they didnt do. They just told me that they voided my warrenty and that is it. Well since then i have had to replace the converter 3 more times at my expense. And each time i took it to the dealer and each time i was told that the warrenty is voided and they were not going to help me. I then took my truck to ashop to test out my electronics and i was told that the engine controll module is not working properly. I then went back to the dealer and they told me the warrenty is voided. Then my wife took my truck into the dealer and they replaced the aft oxygen senser and charged her $260.00 too. Well now after that the converter is starting to fail again. I maintaine my truck to the best operating condition possible. The dealer and chrysler have refused to talk with me about this problem any more. All i want is my truck to run. I bought this truck new in may 1996. I have had 3 transmissons replaced and the intire brake system over hauled my dodge. If you need any more info please contact me anytime. Thank you. Steve.

Exhaust gas recirculation valve failed.

Theunder part of the cargo area of the truck caught on fire due to the muffler catching fire, and there was also a hole in the gas tank. Dealer replaced muffler and fuel tank.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

The rear blower motor that controls the air conditioner burned out, causing the inside of the van to become filled with smoke, the motor melted the housing cover of the motor.dealer has been contacted.

Had to replace the whole air conditioning system by an independent mechanic that only wantedthe truck for half as much time and money.the evaporator coil under the dash failed and the evaporator drier also failed( it rusted out).i have talked to other truck owners with similar problems and i did call chrysler and they never heard of the problem, kinda makes me wonder whats going on. Admittedly the truck is off warranty, but i've never had an air conditioning system that ever needed any attention and one is 12 years old. Any help with this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Check valve recall work completed however too late, ac controller and all the actuators began to fail.

Consumer states that while driving and without warning the spare tire fell from under the vehicle. Dealer notifiedts

Attempted to turn on headlights.headlight switch pulled out from dis-integrated instrument panel plastic. Had to release steering wheel and hold body of headlight switch with one hand while operating switch control with other hand.this dodge ram's dash cover has completely cracked away several years ago.now, the actual instrument panel is dis-integrating.currently the headlight switch, the overdrive switch and auxiliary power outlet are hanging by wires. The drink holder and radio are removed as their mounting support is gone.

Early morning, dark, some fog, mountain roads, 45 to 55 speed limits. Using high beams as needed but not constantly due to fog and some oncoming traffic. Headlights went out, flashed back on and off, seemed to happen a couple of times as i was breaking and trying not to hit something or go into a ditch. Hit dimmer switch and low beam lights came on. Stopped at next available safe pullout. Checked truck over, found nothing. Resumed trip. Lights went out again, using high beams, finished trip with only low beams and had no other problem. Checked out headlight switch, and found overheated wiring that could result in fire.

When towing a trailer the headlights shut off for a few min. Then come back on. With the brights on the shut offs happen earlier in the drive and more frequently.dodge did a recall on the 3500 trucks with the same headlight system, but they did not recall the 2500 trucks. All the electrical power for the headlights is routed threw the headlight switch. The switch heats up and the headlights are shut off or the headlight switch melts from the heat and they never come back on. Dodge even sells a fix for the problem which uses relays, which they should have used when they built the truck.

The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 2500. While driving approximately 70 mph, a burning odor and smoke emitted inside the cabin. The headlight switch ignited into small flames. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the contact extinguished the flames. A fire and police report were not filed. There were no injuries. The contact was able to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the fire was contributed to a faulty headlight switch. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000. The vin was unvailalbe.

After using headlights on high beam for approximately 15 minutes, went to switch to low beam and lost all lighting. Upon examination, headlight switch was melted. This is the second switch that has done this.

Subject:recall on dodge ram 2500 comments: in 1999 you had a recall on all dodge ram 3500 pickups, 1994-1997 for the headlight switch, lights may go out, recall # 819. My 1996 dodge ram 2500 has the exact same switch and my headlights did go out and i almost had an accident. Why was this pickup by-passed on this recall. It is very dangerous for the lights to go out at 65 mph on a dark night. From nhtsa web site.

Dt*: the contacted stated when stopped on the side of the road, a burning odor was noticed and the parking/running lights had failed to illuminate.the fuses were checked and found to be good. The vehicle was taken to an independent service mechanic. On inspection, the problem was identified as a failure to the headlight switch, due to melted wiring. The service dealer and manufacturer were contacted.updated 12/05/06.

Headlight switch keeps overheating due to faulty wiring. Consumer replaced switch 4 times. Dodge is aware of defect, and has designed new part which includes an extra relay.

The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 2500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the low beam headlights suddenly shut off. The contact examined the vehicle and discovered that the headlight switch overheated and melted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000.

Straps broke on my gas tank dropping the tank to the hwy, which punctured the tank and 34 gals of diesel fuel was lost on the hwy. After checking this out with several different sources, it seams to be a recurring problem with dodge trucks why no service bulletins or owner notifications, to the original owner.

Dt: contact stated he had a fuel leak.he also checked the vehicle and found that the throttle cable was breaking, 6 out of 7 strands were broken.there is no recall on this vehicle.the vehicle is parked at this time. Repairs have been made to the vehicle.updated 11/7/2005. While searching for a new throttle cable the consumer discovered that the cable in his vehicle was of the type involved in a recall.the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Rear fuel tank strap broke allowing tank to drag on roadway ripped fuel lines at tank.

Continuous stalling while driving, smell of diesel fuel, and no start or crank over for a week.

The front brakes when applied are causing the truck to pull to either side.left front bearing seatl leaked, dealer has installed new hub and rotor assembly on left front, replaced pads and disc brakes, replaced caliper assembly.vehicle idles too fast, fuel injector pump replaced due to engine smoking.steering wheel was off center.

While driving at speed limit fuel line was leaking, causinga collision.

The injection pump failed and the vehicle started to idle wide open, consumer was unable to turn motor off with the key and had to stall the motor out.nlm

A non-metallic hose rubbing againstengine causes fuel leakage. This could lead to a possible fire underhose.dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

A fuel hose approximately 20" long with a diameter of 5/16" has split and is leaking diesel fuel in excessive amounts. Hose installed invehicle was not compatible with handling diesel fuel and it corroded. Dealership has not examinedvehicle.please provide any additional information / attachments.

Theunder part of the cargo area of the truck caught on fire due to the muffler catching fire, and there was also a hole in the gas tank. Dealer replaced muffler and fuel tank.

Excessive wear of front brake calipers/pads and rotors. In addition, wheel cylinders /tie rod end/fuel injection pump/radio malfunctioned.

Fuel tank assembly leaked fuel.

Dt: the contact smelleda gasolineodor and was unaware of where the odor was coming from.this continued for a couple of weeks.the contact inspected underneath the vehicle and discoveredthat gasolinewas dripping from the gas tank onto the pavement.the vehicle was taken to an independent service shop.the mechanic confirmed a crack in the gas tank.the crack was actually on top of the gas tank at the fasteners and mounts that attached to the tank to the truck.the mechanic had no idea why this failure occurred.the mechaniccontacted chrysler in order to find a replacement, and they stated they did not have the tanks available for that model year.the mechanic also searched for aftermarket replacements and was unsuccessful.at this point there have been no repairs due to the lack of parts.the consumer waswaiting in limbo for a replacement tank that couldnot be found at this time.

Talked w/ several other ram owners with same problem. Dealer also confirmed that there has been several complaints about the malfunction with the diesel . I feel that because there is no way to know the amount of fuel in the vehicle when fueling this is a safety as well as an envirmental hazard.

1 off the mounts that holds gas tank broke. Tank fell about 10 inches under vehicle, which couldcause a major fire if it had fallen to the ground.

I was parkednext to a curb in a lot at work care was behind me. Had to go over curb at 1-2mph heard bangtire blew out. Drove across street, pulled into lot, got out, gas tank dragging ground and sloshed gas all over road. Driveshaft had been turning against metal plate on side of tank-straps broke-had no warning of anything wrong-had to have truck towed-sloshed gas all over trailer-drivers' parting words "pray for me". I called dodge told them i wasn't paying for a safety defect, and that i wasn't happy. They called dealer dealer took care of it no charge.very upsetting having gas tank fall off of what is supposed to be a heavy duty truck.appears only one strap holding tank up -no secondary supports.anybody else have this type of thing happened to them? i can't imagine being in a wreck if it is that fragile.

While filling the gas tank, just before it (gasoline) clicks on pump, would have an overflow or spillage. The vehicle has a single tank. The neck on the pipe filler does not work properly. Taking vehicle to dealer to have mechanic look at it.

On 9/20/2007 i took my 96 dodge pickup for an oil change and the attendant noticed that the front gas tank strap (1 of 2) was rusted through and broken. Upon further examination the back strap was found to be corroded also.

Consumer stated that while driving at any speed and without warning the throttle would stick in the idle position causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealer notified. Ts

Gas gauge inside on the dodge ram 2500 diesel engines corodes and falls off after a short period of time. Our truck is a 1996 and the gauge broke in 1997. The price is too much to fix it and if fixed, was said that it would just break again. It is very hard to drive without knowing how full or empty your gas tank is. This is a very serious problem and needs to be looked into.

The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, fuel was smelled in the cabin and smoke emitted from the engine compartment. Upon inspection, the contact noticed a crack in the fuel line. The contact was a certified mechanic and personally replaced the number four fuel injector line. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Vehicle was experiencing a problem with the door latch on the passenger's side. While backing out of the driveway driver's side door flew open inadvertantly although the doors were locked.

While driving 25 mph the hood flew up without warning. As a result the windshield was shattered.no impact reported. The dealer stated the secondary hood latch had failed.

Emergency brake failed.

The emergency brake failed while the vehicle was on and in neutral. The vehicle was parked at a 1% incline.

Transmission failed in reverse.

Pulling loaded cargo trailer on a hot day in heavy traffic kin san antonio, tx. All a sudden truck started slowing down and smoke started coming out from under the truck. Stopped and looked under and transmission fluid was coming out of transmission on to hot exhaust. The hot transmission fluid melted the plastic/nylon material at the fluid line of the transmission and caused fluid to spray all over the exhaust and under side of truck and onto the payment. Transmission and lines had to be replaced. I was not aware of this recall as i had never been contacted. I wish i had, i would have saved about $4000.00!!!!

After operating vehicle under heavy load (snowplowing), the hydraulic clutch line ruptured when the clutch was depressed and the hydraulic fluid ignited on the hot exhaust system. Note: there was a recall (nhtsa campaign id number : 99v115000 ) issued for the exact same problem with this make/model/year truck with a v10 engine verses the v8. The heat from the nearby exhaust pipe exceeded the temperature rating of the hydraulic clutch line material causing it to rupture.

Transmission will not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear must let off of gas in order to shift.garage told me that 3rd gear is gone and must be replaced.other people w/ 96 dodge rams are also having this problem

Dt*: the contact stated while placed in park with the engine idling, the vehicle went into reverse without warning.the vehicle was moving at about 5 mph.the sales/service dealer was notified but the contact was placed on hold and eventually the contact hung up.the manufacturer was not contacted.the problem occurred 3 times.there was no damage on the first incident, but an empty parked school bus was struck causing damage to the right front quarter panel, right door and the hood on the second occasion.on the third occasion, the vehicle struck the barn and feed trough, causing a broken headlight and a dented bumper.

The problem is the same as nhtsa campaign id number: 97v084000. This has happened three times since the truck was new. Each time there was a lot of smoke, but no fire. Twice the truck was towed to a dealer and once it stayed together, but was leaking badly. Chrysler corp. Says this truck is not included in the recall as does the dealer where it has been repaired. Twice the truck came to a stop where there was no shoulder to get off the roadway. Any information i could get would help.

Vehicle transmission will not shift without taking foot off accelerator to lower rpm.dealer states internal seal failure and transmission needs rebuilding.

I was traveling in canada towing my fifth wheel win the transmission failed.we glided to the side of the road barely out of danger.the truck was towed to authorize chrysler dealer in st. Johns canada.the mechanic indicated the engine producers to much torque for the transmission to handle.i had the trailer weighed and it was 67 hundred pounds well within the range of the truck and transmission.my main concern now is fear this will occur again even though chrysler payed the bill i now an apprehensive about towing!hope you can provide some more information as i have been told his is a common problem with chrysler transmission.really looking for assistance to prevent recurrence.love the truck!but it's like a good friend who you hope will never leave you in a lurch.the other problem as i saw on your informationsheet was tires mine also expired in less than 25000 miles.the other problem is front brake makes pads they seen to have a limited life about 20000 miles, any help or suggestion here?

When driving 50 mph constantly, the truck locks up and you have no forward motion, the engine is still running, buthas no power.the truck has to drift to the side of the road.the truck has been taken to the dealer6 times.twice they put in brand new transmission, 4 times they've dropped out the transmission and took it apart.

Around the first of last month (oct)98 i noticed myauto tranny was acting funny when shifting from 2nd to 3rd.it shifts very late.sometimes it will not shift into 3rd gear without slowing down to make it shift.in trafic this really is a problem.people wonder why i slow down and i'm afraid i will get hit from the rear.i talked to dodge about this and they are talking about replacing my transmission.if they don't this is really going to upset me.a 30,000 dollar truck and only two years old.this should not happen.i feel strongly this is a safety issue that dodge should take care of.please give me some advice if dodge does not fix this problem.thanks

Dt*: the contact stated the plastic transmission cooler fittings melted causing all of the transmission fluid to leak out very quickly.there is a nhtsa recall, # 97v084000, regarding the power train: automatic transmission: cooling unit and lines.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

Recall 97v084000 concerning transmission cooling line. While pulling a 5th wheel trailer up a incline at 30 mph vehicle stopped while in motion, and white smoke camefrom under the hood. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop. Dealer was notified. Dealer informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under that recall.

I believe this is covered in your recall 97v084000 - transmission cooler line to transmission split and or fitting failed causing loss of all transmission fluid.facotry dealer vaguely referenced recall and i located it on your web site.i contacted daimler/chriysler recall center at 800-853-1403 and they took complaint reference # 9992910 and then told me that there was no such recall on item and your 97v084000 was a technical service bulletin.local dealer indicates this recall does not show on their database. Some indication that it was over two years old.my insurance had $340 tow bill and i was out $278.43 in repairs.i noticed extreme amount of smoke from under vehicle and was able to stop before damaging transmission other than running out of fluid. I would like to know if there is a recall and what is going on here.thank you for your assistance.

Driving down interstate in 5th gear when vehicle suddenly, without warning lost 5th gear.

While driving on the highway the fifth gear in my transmission fell off the shaft. Dodge has issued a service bulletin, sept.25,1998, but has not issued a recall. I wonder if that somehow this might cause an accident. The service bulletin number is 21-10-98 rev. A.

While driving on a city street, i lost my power steering, causing me to almost have a rear end collision with the vehicle in front of me. I had my truck towed to a local dealership, they found my brake system to be contaminated and told me that all parts of the system with rubber in them would have to be replaced. After about a week and a half, i was informed that they could find all the parts except one, the combination or proportioning valve. I paid for the diagnostics test and had the truck towed to another local dealer-i needed a second opinion, not understanding why a dealership could not fix my truck. I told the second dealership my story, they did a diagnostic test of their own and came up with the same exact conclusion, including the fact that they could not find the combination valve. I bought another car and was planning on selling the truck, but now am unable to do that, as it has no brakes and they can't be fixed. I'm writing this in hopes that someone else that is looking to buy a truck like this understands the situation if this problem happens to them.

Applying brakes vehicle would swerve left/right; another vehicle stopped suddenly, applied brakes (abs) hard, but vehicle didn't stop; turned to avoid hitting vehicle, insteadhit pole, air bag didn't deploy. Taken to dealership for repairs. Have invoices.

Dealership and chrysler have acknowledged that this is a known fault and a technical service bulletin has been filed with nhtsa yet they refuse to resolve the problem citing that the vehicle has been modified with an aftermarket lift kit. I have been in contact with one other dodge vehicle owner with the same problem. His name is richard hardy (714) 964-0483. He has also been denied warranty work. He, along with a local suspension shop have worked to identify the problem with the brakes and suspension. Unable to locate the problem, he submitted to dodge's demoands of removing the lift kit ( this is a difficult 6 hour process). The problem still existed when the lift kit was removed. When the vehicle was returned to mr. Hardy after the warranty work was completed it still exhibits the same problem. As this is a known problem and existed prior to the installation of the lift kit, i have refused to remove my lift kit as it has no bearing on remedying the problem. I am appealing to you to help me resolve this issue.

After stopping about 4 or 5 timeshad no vaccum assist on the brakes, causing driver to rear end another vehicle anddamaging the front bumper. The dealer was aware of the problem, and stated that a largervacuum tank could be installed to correct prolbem at owner's expense.

Vehicle serviced per recall for vacuum relief valve.brake problems continue and has been determined to be a vacuum problem in the brake booster.

Loss of vacuum power assist overnight, no brakes until vacuum pump builds up pressure.lost control of vehicle and rolled into the street due to loss of brakes. Also front brakes pulll to the right.

When braking at any speed, the brake pedal felt hard and braking distance was extended. The consumer noticed the hose to the brake booster was oily.there was a recall, but this vehicle was not included in recall due to vin.

While driving at any speeed and keeping the steering wheel straght, steering wheel will go from side to side. Consumer can't keep control ofsteering. Vehicle has been in repair shop for the problem, anddealer still hasn't fixed the problem.

My 96 ram 2500 has a major steering/handling problem at or about any high speed if i hit any potholes, rough spots, or if i turn my steering wheel to the left for a prolong period of time my steering wheel starts shaking like i have blown a tire violently shaking/hopping so erratic that it shakes a 20 lb backpack off of my passengers seat and on to the floorboard. I have to bring the truck to an immediate stop to elevate the problem. This works until the next bump or rough spot in the road. The other day my girlfriends brother was following me in my 98 taurus and said that he thought for sure i was going to roll or lose control. He stated that my front wheels were shaking violently left to right although i was in a straight on my steering wheel. I have had the truck in the shop several times 1. Converse county motors, douglas, wyoming. The mechanic stated that the track bar was faulty so it was replaced by the next shop listed below. Amount spent at this shop with being an employee was $40.00 labor and $214.19 for a complete replaced front driveline.2. Ok wrecking, douglas, wyoming- i have taken the truck to this shop after replacing the steering stabilizer shock, passenger side tie rod, front shocks, and front brakes. They replaced track bar and front brake lines. Total spent this repair $432.60 they notified me that the front end components were now tight and it shouldn't do it anymore no such luck!!to my dismay i still can't get this problem resolved i have heard about this problem quite frequentlynhtsa please come drive my truck and you will be shocked at this problem!!!! major safety problem with steering and handling!!!

I was driving down the road doing about 55mph and all of a sudden started to have a bad vibration. It caused the whole truck to shake. Steering and braking malfunctions.

While driving applied the brakes and the vehicle would pull to the right. Also once the vehicle pulled to the right there wassevere pulling in the steering wheel, the steering wheel will pull right out of hand. Took vehicle to dealer and they said that they did not know how to fix the vehicle.

When starting vehicle in morning, there is no power assist. The vaccum system loses power overnight. Have to wait a while before restarting & to move. Took to dealer for repairs, but informed it was a design flaw & could notchange or fix the problem.

Just pulled away from green light when another vehicle pulled out also. Consumer's vehicle's engine roared after being hit. Traveled 30ft & hit telephone pole. Had no steering or brake control. The air bags failed to deploy upon impact with the pole. The right front end was only hit slightly.

This part has been replaced 3 times since i bought the vehicle. First time was at 62,000, when it quickley developed lose steering and then again at 100,000 miles and now at 157000 miles. When i had the second one done i was told that this was a common problem with this truck. The dealer said that dodge had made a correction to this part and that the one they put on at 62,000 miles was the new model. But it failed at 100,000.i contacted dodge and they claimed they have had no problems, but the dealer said there has been and also the front end shop that replaced the one at 100,000. I feel this could be a safety issue if it let go completely while driving. I would be glad to help you research this problem.

Truck would not quit leaking inside truck no windows down or doors open after rain? found through a boroscope investigation that truck welded seams were not properly sealed after the welding took place. Windshield wiper motors removed and in between cab under window motor numerous welds were found to be leaking. Labor intensive to reseal. Cost $1,900 to reseal faulty welds from mexico!

The dash is a big pile of junk! hard plastic with a vibrating diesel? turns to pieces and falls into defroster ducts, floor, all in cab of truck! this is why you don't buy dodge or you buy it for only cummins diesel power! thats one of the only things that seldom breaks and needs fixing! take the power train away and you would not sell another! booo! no good dash!

There is a crack across the whole short side of bed of vehicle. Vehicle has never been used to haulanything.

Consumer states while making a right hand turn the drivers side door swung open.consumer states if it was not for the seatbelt someone would have been injured.consumer states that the metal in door has fatigue..*jg

Hood hinges on early models full size dodge trucks can slide out of slot thus releasing spring.should any one be in the area they could receive a serious injury.later models put a retainer preventing spring from sliding out of slot and releasing.

I have a 1996 dodge ram 2500 4x4 with 5.9l turbo diesel. The front passenger side spring/shock tower is ripping from the frame, driver side is cracked. Dodge will do nothing be cause it doesn't fall within their recall dates. Safety recall no.835. When braking vehiclepulls hard to the left.dealer has beennotified. Feel free to provide any further information.

The pealing (defective) paint that dodge refuses to do anything about has now pealed around the windshield frame. The windshield is stuck to the paint, but since the paint has turned loose from the windshield frame it's just sort of sitting there. I guess the good news is now upon impact the windshield will quickly exit the vehicle allowing the sharp plastic shards from the broken dash to also leave the vehicle rather than impaling the occupant's. This just weeks after having to weld a broken lower a frame bracket back in place, yet another defect in these trucks.
