The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who advised the contact that the front sensor circuit failed however, he was unable to determine how the failure caused the erroneous air bag deployment.the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

Air bag light is on glow as described in the recall notice of nhtsa id# 01v153000. Dodge mfg. And the dealer says no recall on my truck eventhough air bag light is on as described in the recall notice. Recall is on trucks yr. 1996 thru yr. 2000 and mine is a yr. 1997.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated after an un-related service to the vehicle. The warning light remained illuminated for several months. Later, while reversing from a service bay at approximately 5 mph, the driver side air bag deployed without warning. The contact stated that the chemicals from the air bag caused burns to the face and eyes, which required medical attention. The contact jumped out of the driver side of the vehicle and was nearly run over by the vehicle that was still moving in reverse. The vehicle was diagnosed by a mechanic who advised the contact that the front air bag sensor failed and caused the inadvertent air bag deployment. The contact was also advised of nhtsa campaign number: 99v02300 (air bags: frontal). The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall. Additionally, the manufacturer advised the contact that the parts needed for the recall repairs were no longer being manufactured. Consumer'svehicle was involved in a collision. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy.vehicle wasbacking out of the driveway.

Your faulty airbags did not deploy.

While driving the vehicle the air bag light came on. After reaching my destination about 5 minutes or so later. I pulled into a parking space put the truck in park, turned off the ignition, opened the door and the drivers airbag deployed all by itself. Luckily i was sitting back in the seat starting to exit the vehicle when it deployed. Now i have been with this truck since it was purchased and it has never been in a accident. It actually set for a large part of its life because i drove a company vehicle for my job. I called the dodge dealer where we bought the truck and they said there was nothing they could do because of the age of the truck and told me i should contact dodge directly. I called dodge and explained what happened to the lady that answered and the first thing she asked was if i was injured. I told her luckily no but me or someone could have been killed if i would have been driving. She finished taking the report and said someone would contact me in 2-3 days. I received a letter from dodge about a week later stating that since there were no recalls or warranties listed for the truck per the serial number i should contact my insurance company and if they feel its a manufacturing responsibility ,they have subrogation rights. Now you would think dodge would want to know what made this happen for the safety of their customers. I have found that there was a recall on these trucks but my serial number was not involved in that recall. My truck is in very good condition and i'm afraid the insurance company is going to total it because of its age.someone needs to make these manufacturers stand behind their products especially when it involves the safety equipment. Any help in this matter you can provide would be appreciated.

Air bag sensor light remained on while driving. Dealer notified.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500. While reversing at approximately 5 mph, the driver side air bag deployed independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that the vin was included under nhtsa campaign id number: 00v02300 (air bags). The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

While driving 97 dodge ram my daughter almost wrecked due to vehicle sudden surge, stall and shut down causing loss of power steering and other control of vehicle. Also happened to me multiple times when i test drove it. Subsequent events found to include air bag light illumination, cruise control light on steering wheel comes on and vehicle surges with rpm's up to @ 2,000 before full stall. Code p0123 on obdii scanner. Sensor replaced and stillhappening. Stopped problem completely by disconnecting the clock spring connections. Researched other complaints and found many listed under vehicle speed control, clock spring, airbag, electrical etc covering many years and including injuries. Nhtsa needs to cross reference these complaints and connect the dots as there is no place i can find to type in the actual component name "clock spring" which is an extremely poor setup for a complaint site. Also limiting mileage to 3 numbers is ridiculous. Speed ranged from barely moving @ 2mph to 45mph. Somebody is going to get killed if they haven't already.

I had been driving my 1997 ram 1500 4x4 truck, i stop the vehicle, shut off the engine, opened the driver's door and started to step out of the vehicle. As i was half way out of the vehicle the driver's airbag went off, hitting my right shoulder as it deployed. I am very lucky it did not deploy a second sooner. I wadded the bag up and taped the steering wheel back together, i guess the is nothing else i can do. I worry now about my father, whom has a 1995 ram 1500 4x4 truck. I looked up online and i see that only the 2003 ram 1500 and newer trucks fall into the recall, but what are the chances that my father's truck might do the same thing as mine did last week, with his being 2 years older even.

Started smelling strong gas fumes. Had checked and found gas tank was cracked on top and running down both sides very close to exhaust pipes. Fire hazard. Had to have gas tank and fuel pump replaced at my expense. Seems to me a gas tank should last longer than 7 years or be a factory defect.

My report is not necessarily concerning a specific incident. Approximately the date and time specified above i noticed my dash cracking, since that time the entire dash of my truck has cracked and broken. I have had the cupholders break and spill on me and now my dash backlight has stopped functioning. It is only a matter of time until it completely falls apart. I have applied adhesive to a dash cover to prevent further degradation of the plastic.from what i see on my truck and my father-in-laws 2003 dodge ram it is a fundamental flaw in the material the dash components are made from. I fear it unsafe to drive since i don't know when catastrophic failure will occur. Numerous other dodge trucksthat belong to friends and coworkers have the same problems. Any attention you can give to this issue will be appreciated.

Dt: the contact stated while driving the brake pedal went to the floor.upon inspection, the steel line separated near the gas tank.the gas tank will actually have to be dropped to verify.the vehicle has not been to a mechanic, and there have been no repairs made.

Dash starting cracking and falling apart, wires got messed up and some things don't work. Parts of the plastic of the dash come out the vents when you turn on the heat or air. Part with the vin went somewhere to parts unknown.

I bought a 1997 dodge ram slt 1500. It is used and has 135,000 miles on it. However, i like the truck and i don't want to sell it because it is not safe for my family and i to be in.it has cracks all in the dashboard...and they are getting worse every day. I can actually see wires and the internal part of my dash components. It squeaks and i can also see steel mounting post that look really dangerous for a sudden stop or even i miner fender bender. It is actually caving in....and completely deteriorating. Nothing has been done to correct this problem by dodge as far as i know. I have researched this and there is no recall that i can find...and i do not feel that the original..or even a second owner should have to pay for this...nor do chryslers job...and make the vehicle safe for driving. I take good care of the vehicle...and not only is it unsightly...but is a hazard that needs to rise concern in all dodge owners.i am requesting a replacement dash for my vehicle either from dodge...or a safety certified after market dash that will not do this again!!!! this is also the second dash to do this on this vehicle...that is apparent.

The low beam headlights cut out while i was driving at night to the store a motorist flashed their lights at me while i was at a light.. Checked all fuses and had mechanic look it over. They narrowed it down to the steering column it will be 400$ to fix. The wire harness pin plug had overheated and melted. Almost caused a fire. I had smelled burning electric smell. Was only able to hold hi beam lever to keep hi beams engaged to be able to drive with lights till problem is fixed.

Head lights go out when driving or sometimes flickers on/off when driving, traced wiring and noticed that wiring was burnt at pig tail connector which is the head light switch at the part called bezel... Never had any trouble with it until this year and couldn't understand why wire burnt, the plastic/bezelmelted first rather than fuse tripping. This occurs when driving anywhere but it occurred first when i was headed to work at 3am in highway 74 which is mountainous and very curvy road... Extremely dangerous. I believe this is a defective part and is safety risk.

I own a 1997 dodge ram 1500 4 wd pickup. I have had it for 3 years and have had numerous problems with the head lights cutting on and off, and then going off and not coming back on. I spent several hundreds of dollars to have the problem fixed, but it still does it. I have been told by mechanics that do this type of work for a living that this is a manufacturers defect in the wiring somewhere. And that there are several vehicles( dodge trucks) with this same problem. I believe that dodge needs to put out a recall on this issue and got the problem resolved. I like many people take my chances having to drive at night.

40amp ignition run fuse keeps blowing dissabling our 1997 dodge ram 1500 truck. Fuse has blown over 6 times now.contacted dodge customer service to find out about recalls, service bullitins or their tecnical help on this problem.they told us to go to an authorized dealer/repair shop to have it checked.we went to sunflower dodge in olathe,ks.there service advisor bobby kielman informed us they could not duplicate the problem and advised us not to have them research the problem further because of the high shop charges it would incur and they would probably not find the cause anyway.i feel this is a safety issue that dodge is dropping the ball on taking care of.it is my concern that the fuse will blow while my wife is driving causing her to become stranded.or worse, a fire occuring because of the overheating of faulty wiring & components. Sunflower dodge did inform us of recalls for similar problems on dodge ram trucks like ours for years 1996 and earlier.

Engine has always pinged on regular gas - 5+ trips to dodge for service and they never fixed the problem. At one point, they poured fuel injector cleaner in the engine which is something they tell you not to do when you purchase the vehicle. Air conditioning system completely shot at 50,000 miles in october, 2001.a month later, my rear-end went up at a cost of $1345. Two weeks later, my transmission went up at a cost of $1700. In june of 2001, my fuel pump went up at a cost of $216.i did not have any of these repairs done at dodge although i purchased dodge parts because they have never fixed anything without either screwing up something else or just not properly repairing the problems. I called their service department for repair prices and they were much higher than independent service shops.i wrote them for assistance with these repair costs but they would not assist me because repairs were not done at dodge. They said i should have asked them for help first but i could not wait for a response from them because i needed my vehicle right away. I also did not trust them to properly repair my vehicle. Of course, my truck was out of warranty for all of the problems. I even took them to small claims court for the engine ping they could not correct and they brought in 4 high dollar lawyers, so, of course, iost the case. I have not yet had my air conditioner repaired.i am going to contact them to see if they will repair it with some financial assistance although i am not sure if i should trust them at this point.i have spent a total of $3,331 in repairs over the past 3 months and am not finished yet. What a lemon! they also could not perform a simple oil change properly-they did not replace the oil plug and the oil was leaking.

Ihad the exhaust system replaced.when i returned to pick up my vehicle from the shop i was informed that a defective catalytic converter was the cause of a rattle and that i should return to the dealer for replacement because the converter is under warranty to 80k miles. That evening i called dodge customer service explained in detail what work had been done to the system. My shop told me to make sure i informed them of a weld. Dodge cs said no problem that the converter would be covered.upon taking the truck to the dealer they informed me that they will not replace the converter because i had altered the system by replacing the factory exhaust."the altering that was done was the front clamp which was rusted in place had to be cut off the system and replaced with a welded connecter" when i called dodge customer service i spoke with a woman named bobbi i informed her that the only reason i replaced the exhaust was it sounded like the noise was coming from the muffler she said "why didnt you take it to the dealer in the first place"i responed that the dealer charged close to $500 for the same thing i had done at an exhaust repair shop for $300 and that it was the premature wear of something that should have lasted much longer ie the catalytic converter. She said that i should have taken it to the dealer and paid for the work in the first place and that if the dealer determined that the catalytic converter was bad they would have replaced it ,if it was the muffler i would have had to pay them $77 for 1 hour of diagnostic regardless of what was one. I paid $300 for an exhaust that i didnt need because of a defective catalytic converter on my truckthat should be under warranty to 80k miles.i now have to pay another $250 dollars to replace the catalytic converter to bring my truck back in line with my local emissions because they refuse to honor the warranty because one clamp which was rustedin place was cut off of the factory piece when i had it replaced.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500. While driving 40 mph the headlight switch failed. Upon further inspection he noticed that the wires in the housing had melted. After he purchased the parts from the dealer, he performed the repair. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Consumer complaint in reference to a 1997 dodge ram 1500 pickup truck with defective paint and headlight switch, request a recall investigation. The primer was not bonding to the metal and as a result the paint was peeling off the vehicle. The consumer did some research on the headlight switch and found that the dodge 3500series pickup was recalled for the same exact problem.the consumer believes his vehicle should be included in the recall because it is safety related.

The vehicle leaks from the top of the tank.i have had it repaired once by a dodge dealership but it has started leaking again around the fuel pump.i had the fuel pump replaced and it has started leaking again.i have had it checked by another dealer and the tank itself is cracking.they noted no damage around tank or to other components.they tested the original pump and it did not leak.the leak came back once the fuel pump seal began to dry out.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge 1500. The contact stated that the fuel tank detached from the vehicle due to corroded straps. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop who confirmed that the failure had occurred as a result of corrosion. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 147,000.

Upon exiting vehicle after short trip (2 miles), noticed strong fuel odor.looked under truck and observed fuelstreaming down over hot exhaust pipe beneath engine compartment.inspection of engine revealed burst line connecting fuel rails, causing fuel to spray over hot engine/exhaust, extreme fire hazard.cannot be driven due to fire hazard.line is not rubbing on anything or flexing to cause failure.

Intake manifold leak , talking to dealer and mechanic shop this is a common problem and has been for a long time, chrysler has a tsb 09-05-00 out on this problem but no recall issued. The intake manifold gasket and bolts were defective causing the engine to use up more gas and oil.

Truck was still acting the same.then at 33,000/34,000 mi.trany started shifting erratic from 2-3rd gear, had dealer check and reservice trany, scan system, they road tested vehicle, said everything is ok. Now the next day, trany slips going into 3rd gear,(engine overreaves between 2-3rd gear). Called dealer and was told they would charge me to look at it again. I talked to a couple of trany shops and was told dodge has defective transmissions, for my year vehicle.

Fuel pump failure.

I own a dodge ram 1500 pick up, 1997, 4-wd, automatic. I had to replace the fuel pump this week. The cost including labor was $750.00. I feel that with only 67,000 miles on a 1997 vehicle, the fuel pump should not need replacing.the tow truck driver's first reaction was that he felt i needed on of "those lousy dodge fuel pumps".i have a friend who also needed one replaced last week, again a dodge ram p/u.i had my work done at neighborhood auto, in new bedford, ma.when i found out the cost of the job, i felt it was on the high side. I called central dodge, in raynham, ma, where i purchsed the truck used in march, 2002. They informed me that the part would need to be ordered, due too overwhelming demand on this part.all of this adds up to my suspicions that this part may be faulty, and a recall, and refund may be in order.

There is a potential saftey problem when without warning fuel pump module quits. If this shoud happen in a high speed traffic situation, the engine shuts down, power steering and power breaks are lost, you could become a target in the middle of the highway.

While driving the vehicle lostpower.tookvehicle to dealer, and the dealer replaced fuel pumpat 39,000 miles, 44,000 miles and 63,000 miles.

I own a 1997 dodge ram 1500 w/93,000 on it the problems began the radiator $250 just for the part went bad then transmission went out dodge is infamous for the transmission problems i had to pay $1900 to get it fixed after that was done the fuel rail & o ring started to leak another well know defect on chrysler vehicles my truck was visibly losing gas & obviously dangerous there is no way to repair the defective cap you have to buy the whole fuel rail from the dealer for $300 just for the part.i think that is not only ridiculous but dangerous & an obvious problem with other chyrsler vehicles & yet nothing has been done.

Strong gas smell; called one dealer who was booked solid, (byrd dodge, saltlick, ky.) he said "fuel leaks on the 97 dodge ram 5.2 are not common"; fuel rail ordered from detroit because not stocked by any local dealers; mann dodge said not to drive--fuel dripping onto manifold; fr part superseded and required adapter; owner-customer suspects the part was flawed at manufacturer.

Fuel leak @ the injector rail where fuel pures on the exhaust manifold.

Passenger side exterior mirror is defective. It will not remain stationary and move around in the wind. Within the first week of ownership, a smell of fuel became increasing stronger and a whining sound upon takeoff became louder.i found the leak at the end of the driver's side plastic! fuel rail next to the fire wall above the intake manifold. This started after outside temperature reached 1 degree fahrenheit.fuel falls directly onto a really hot motor.fog lights, cruise control and horn does not work. *la

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500.i noticed a strong gas smell and found that the plastics fuel rail was spraying gas onto the intact manifold.this was located on the drivers side by the firewall.i took it to the dealer and i was told that the part was superseded by a new design and it would take a week to get the parts.

Had the vehicle serviced about a month ago per manufacture recommendations.noticed intermittly smell of fuel but it became increasing stronger and more frequent within the last week.found the leak at the end of the driver's side fuel rail next to the fire wall above the intake manifold.contacted the dealerin the process of being repaired.

Gasoline tank started leaking due to stress crack failure.no indication of mechanical wear at the failure point, appears to be a failure of the plastic.

Fuel gauge isn't working, and when the consumer fills tank up,gauge indicates the wrong amount of gas. It shows that tank is only half full. Consumer can't determine how many miles per gallon of gas they are driving.

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 pick-up.i recently noticed a strong odor of gasoline.when i filled up my gas tank, i discovered that fuel was leaking from the tank.further investigation revealedthe leak appears to be coming from near the top of the tank.i can't see the source of the leak because of the frame.i contacted daimler-chrysler and they were no help since the vehicle is out of warranty.since the leak is near the exhaust piping, i am concerned about the possibility of fire.the truck had never been driven off-road, only on streets and highways.i have an appointment next week with a repair facility to examine the cause of the leak.

This problem is in regards to the electrical system:ignition:electronic control unit. Summary of problem: intermintent surge, buck, driveline clunk, or transfer harshness. The exact same problem as described in service bulletin # 96-40, nhtsa item # sbo49106. I have been esperiencing problems with this for some time i have approached 2 different dealers ,hendrick dodge and bumpous dodge. They received my truck with 29,000 miles on it continued to drive till warranty expired and claimed nothing was wrong. As a result of this problem it has loosened the the rear shackles causing the rear differential to become loose and cause extreme wear on the passenger side tires. I have had absolutely no satisfaction with the either dealership this vehicle is a lemon. In the past i had to return it 7 times to have a water leak fixed, of course no documentation was given to me, at the time it never occured to me that this would be useful. Smart on their part. I would like some help dealing with this matter, as i am one individual with very little power and recourse. Thank you kevin carlson

Since january i have been having problems with it stalling when i put it in reverse if i had it idle for awhile or warming up. I took it back to auto nation and they could not find anything wrong. They took it to dickinson dodge (910) 864-2411 and they could not get it to duplicate.the problem continued periodically until april when the transmission started slipping.this would only happen when i was in reverse then would try to put it in drive.the transmission would hesitate and it was like i was in nuetral.after a few seconds the drive gear would kick in and it was fine.a few times i had to put it in d2 then pull out and put it in drive.i had dickinson dodge check this again and they could find no problem.in late june i took it in for service and told dickinson to check the transmission again and they could not find anything or get it to duplicate the slipping and stalling.they di replace the serpentine belt and told me that could have been the problem but it wasn't.two ddays after on july 1st i was driving around fayetteville and the check engine light came on.i contacted dickinson dodge again and on 5 july took it in.initially they said the fault registered as a drop inrpm's.they could not find the source of the problem and thought it was electrical initially.then on 6 july they decided to drop the transmission pan and found the torque converter was separating and putting metal fragments in the transmission.they said this ate away the seal for the gear box and allowed oil in the clutches.that was causing the slippage and the transmission would have to be rebuilt.they also said my overdrive gear was already out.they said it would cost approximately $1500 to rebuild it.i have already spent $95 for testing which showed nothing and another $80 for the serpentine belt replacement.i would think a truck with only 48,000 miles on it the transmission would be in excellent condition.i am suspecting it may be a flood vehicle.

While driving at normal speedtransmission gear slips into neutral and vehicle will stop accelerating. To get it back into gear, driver has to putindicator into neutral and shift it back to drive. Dealer has been contacted.

Transmission will shift through all gears approaching 30mph... It will then need to be almost floored to get the truck to down shift so i can begin to move at a quicker rate of speed. Overdrive slips everytime you press the pedal and sometimes won't go into overdrive. From what i understand the torque converter has faulty clutches causing them to break down. The debris clog up the check valve out of the cooler blocking flow of fluid to the transmission... Therefore causing severe damage as early as 20miles within check valve clogging. Dodge needs to understand this problem because i'm going to loose a trans soon and thousands of other people already have. Dodge replaces the transmission leaving the clogged check valve this causes the second transmission to go etc. I believe you get this gist of it. Someone needs to do something about this why is our government blind to the cheap, dangerous and faulty assembly of this vehicle. Someone please force a recall on these powertrains!!! the dodge owning citizens are tired of being taken advantage of day after day.

We own a 1997 dodge ram truck.while i was buckling two infants seats in our rear seat using the over the shoulder belts, the locking plates that keep the belt tight around the car seats popped off.therefore i am not able to use those seat belts currently for car seats.i contacted my local dodge dealer and told them the problem.they told me it would cost $130 plus labor to have each belt replaced.i do not think i should have to pay for this since it is a safety issue.if these plates will pop off with me tightening, who is not to say they will not come off in an accident.currently i have to have one car seat in the front passenger seat (which is not the safest place) and the other in the middle back (which is okay).please let me know if you have any suggestions or can help me in any way.thank you.

When drivingdriver's side seat collapsed toreclining position. Consumer has contacteddealer; the dealer has replacedseat track and anchor to correct the problem. Please provide any further details.

While driving and stepping on the brakesthe driver's seat will move forward. The same thing could happen when accelerating, but backward.

My truck was at a stand still when i was rear-ended by another vehicle.at point of impact, both the driver and passenger side front seats broke and reclined to the rearward position.both can be put in the forward and back to the rearward position (totally reclined) by simply pushing it from front to back.the drivers side seat broke to the point that only a small part of the hinge on the right side of the seat remains to hold the backrest to the bottom of the seat.both seats failed to hold up to the impact!the consequence of the drivers side seat breaking is that my son, who was positioned behind the drivers seat, broke his jaw when he was thrown forward, after the seat had already broken to the rearward position.his face made contact with the headrest of the drivers side seat as it was laying in his lap.nothing has been done to correct the failure as of yet, as the claims adjuster has yet to inspect my truck.

An electrical short occurred underneath driver's seat, possibly due to motor burning up.caused an electrical fire directly beneath the driver's seat. Consumer disconnected battery to stop the fire. *ml

The vehicles seat recliner utilizes only one recliner mechanism rather than dual mechanisms. The consumer believes this makes the mechanism prone to failure.*ph*nlm

The brake line along frame rail behind the fuel tank rusted and bursted, resulting in a loss of brakes.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that whenhe depressed the brake pedal, it became spongy and extended to the floor. The brakes failed to stop the vehicle immediately and he was forced to tap the pedal continuously. The front and rear disc pads were replaced. The master cylinder and the calipers were replaced and the rotors were bled but the failure recurred. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 113,000.

Loss of braking ability - brake line failure due to rust/corrosion behind gas tank on driver's side of vehicle.

Brake line burst behind fuel tank on driver's side, leading to loss of brake fluid, and loss of brake use.

While driving at any speed the vehicle vibrates.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection.the dealer informed the driver that the brakes needed to be replaced.the driver noticed that the gas line and brake lines were rusty.*mr

Front brakes have repeatedly shown excessive wear.five repairs have been made - 5 sets of linings, 2 sets of rotors, and 2 sets of brake calipers.all repairs have been made between 1000 and 22000 miles and a 7 month period.

Brakes fail in sudden stops at any speed.pedal goes to the floor.

A long list is available at humes of waterford,pa.the most amazing failure of the vehichle was when the driver's door flew open while driving around the bend and i was lucky thaat no oncoming traffic was coming.humes(dealer) fixed it by a horrible weld on the latch.

Brakes, rotors, transmission, and alignment malfunction.

Brake failed which resulted in an accident. No air bag deployment. The seat belt saved the consumer's life. Mr ph. Also the spare tire was bald and it took 3 months to get it replaced.

While driving 25 mph brakes failed. In order to stop the truck driver had to shift to first gear, then apply the emergency brake.

1997 dodge ram 1500, left rear brake line failure located behind the fuel tank.

Brake malfunction.

Hard brake line for rear brakes broke where corroded when i depressed the brake pedal causing me to loose brake pressure and caused my brakes not to work narrowly avoiding an accident.

Brake failure due to brake line failure behind the fuel tank and behind the passenger side front wheel.

Intermittently, and an on-going problem when applying brakes. The pedal would go to the floor and causes pulsation and extended stopping distance. The vehicle has beenat the dealershipondifferent occasion replaced the master cylinder. The extended stopping distance recurred. *la

The distance in which vehicle needs to stop is longer than other similar vehicles.it is most noticeable in moderate to hard braking.when the brakes are applied, the pedal feel is average but the brakes do not seem to grab and stop the vehicle as it should.i have had numerous close accidents due to poor braking.the brakes do not lock-up on the vehicle, not even to the point where abs will need to release the rear wheels.i have completely replaced all brake components and has not improved at all!!as well as spend hundreds of dollars on diagnostics work with no answer as to the cause (but the dealer does know there is a problem)!!this is not the fault of the dealer, they have been fair, but have run out of places to look.they have called chrysler star hotline, etc. But still no resolve.if anyone has a fix for this or a course of action to take, please let me know!i love the truck, but it is extremely dangerous to drive.

The consumer stated during a panic stop, it took longer for the vehicle to stop.

On december 14 2005 my son was driving my dodge ram 1500, he tried to stop and the abs system locked and he rear ended the car in front of him. The engine stalled and he had no control over the vehicle. The truck slid approximately 20 feet. There was a child injured in the car that he hit.

Truck acceelrated upon putting into drive.....the pedal went to the floor ....could not stop it. The abs activated and vehicle crashed into a building....it squeeled the tires as soon as i stepped on pedal and it went to the floor......crashed into a building and it was still revving at full throttle.........can you help us......we dont want to drive it again unless we know what caused it to do this.........the exterior damage is being repaired but we still dont know why it did that........thankyou...

I have had extensive brake problems with my 97 dodge ram. There has always been a rattle from the front driver's side wheel area.there has also been a intermittent brake pull to the driver side.it became a serious problem after the brakes were replaced at 12000 miles.the truck has also had excessive pad wear.the first set was replaced on5/15/98 with 12314 miles on the truck.the second set was replaced on6/1/98 with 13093 miles.the third set was replaced on 8/13/98 with 16336 miles on the truck.the fourth set of brakes was replaced on 4/6/99 with 25323 miles on the truck.counting the original set of brakes, which started squealing atapproximately 12000 miles,i have had five sets of front brake pads and three sets of rotors put on this truck.not to mention that the intermittent brake pull has not gone away.even after installing this last set of pads.i went to arbitration.i had witness statements, but the arbitrator denied my claim to have daimler chrysler purchase my truck back.i have also had many close calls when the truck would pull to the left into oncoming traffic.the truck has also bounced off of the center median more than once. The pattern is always the same.i get the truck back from a brake repair and it is fine for one to two weeks.after a short while, one to two weeks, the truck starts to make a rattling noise from the front drivers side wheel well, then the brake pedal will get soft.then the intermittent brake pull starts all over again.i would appreciate any help that you could give me.i have lost confidence in this vehicle, and will not drive it any more than i have to.i also will not let my wife drive it or loan it out to any friends.

Intermittently when brakes are applied the pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance.the dealer has repaired the vehicle twice prior. Consumer took vehicle to dealer a third time and stated that pedal goes and vehicle slowly stops, master cylinder and front brake pads were replaced, but problem still exist, consumer took vehicle to another independent dealer and was told that a problem does exist probably with the hydraulic fluid flowing to the back brakes.

The braking system does not stop the truck as it should. When you make an emergency stop the pedal feels as if the master cylinder piston bottoms out, metal against metal. I checked to see if there was a brake pedal stop and there were none. When i had to make my first emergency stop i had plenty of distance to stop. My speed was 35mph with about 50feet of clearance. I had to swerve and run thru a yard causing $200.00 damage. I took the truck over to the dealer and was told nothing was wrong. I went home and did a planned emergency stop in front of my house. At 30mph, it took 30 -35 feet to stop. My brother has a 1992 dodge truck of the same weight and he can stop in 12- 15 feet at the same speed. Before the warranty ran out i took the truck back to the dealer and had the service mgr to test drive the truck and he felt ther was a definite problem. He ordered a more aggressive set of pads and chrysler cancelled the order and sent a kit with instructions to install the kit instead of the pads. To me. That tells me they know of a problem, but do not want it to get out causinf a recall on all 1997 trucks. The dealer stated there were no recalls or bullentins on brake problems. I asked them is it going to take a fatality due to faulty brakes before they fix the problem. After the installation of the kit the brakes work a little better but far from being safe as to pulling a 4 wheeler and trailer or a boat and trailer. Last week i had to execute another emergency stop. 50 mph with approximately 150 feet of distance. I ended up in the middle of the intersection.my police cruiserat 30 mph can stop in 10 -14 feet . Even my brother's truck with a 1000 lbs of weight in the bed stops in a shorter distance than my truck. Are there any other victims of brake problems besides myself?

Consumer took vehicle to dealerto have brakes done and a gear box put on, and consumer found outthat fornt coil springs were busteddue to defective steel.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, the abs system kicks in, and the brake pedal goes straight to the floorboard.

As pernhtsa #sb049106,bulletin #96-40,sequence #152.the description in this report describes how my truck has driven since i received it.i went through all the hoops and rings that the dealer and the regional manager required and finally ended up in arbitration only to be told that my truck didnt have a problem, what i felt (and experenced) was inherent to the vehicle and all the vibration, clunking and hesitation just bothered me more than anyone else was because i was sensative to it.after 2 years of battling with this and brake problems(which i will say ,they fixed after 32000 miles and $400+ of my money) i couldnt afford the time off to continue battling. Not once was this buletin ever brought up,infact, during arbitration,if was asked if any bulletins refered to problems like this and the answer was a flat "no".i still have all my records and copies of the dealer service records.i'll try to call monday,07/19/99.my home #is 623-878-2138(recorder/fax) cellphone is 602-321-0921.thank you phil lobins.

While driving and attempted to stop, anti-lock brakes did not catch, and consumer ran into theback of another automobile.driversustained some injuries.

Consumer having problems with there brakes and it is hard to stop vehicle. Dealer notified.

Ongoing and intermittent failure ofbraking system;. Vehicle been in / out of dealer shop on twelve occasions.various parts and repairs have been made, but the problem still reoccurring. Please provide us with any further details on this matter.

Abs brakes pulled to left and locked up,causing consumer to hit enbankment and went into someone's yard.

Estremely poor brake response.during moderate braking or with a light trailer/load it takes extremely long to stop the vehicle.only has rear abs, it has never gone off.you cannot lock the tires except on ice/snow or loose gravel/sand.been in one accident, numerous other close calls.the brake pedal can be pressed to the floor.dealer says nothing is wrong, several brake jobs done, now running with ss rotors and ceramic pads with no improvement.i have a friend with the same make/model/year that has 44" mudders and can stop on a dime.

Abs brakes failed 3 times, once resulting in a collision.

Anti lock brakes failed several times.

While driving driver applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. Vehicle skidded and stopped when engaged on its own.driver took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic informed determined that the brake pads/ abs control unit needed to be replaced.

Unable to stop truck safely. Brake pedal depressed to the floor, truck comes to stop very, very slowly.lt225/75r standard size tires replaced w/sport appearance pachage p265/75r16 by manufacturer. Tires too large for brake system?

Whenapplying thebrakes brake pedal goes to the floor ,and the vehicle does not register. Consumer has contacted dealer.

While driving at any speed and applying the brakes, the brakes are soft and go straight to the floorboard.when slowing down the pedal will slowly go to the floor. Consumer has been having problems with brakes for a while, and can't detemine what the problem is.

Whenever brakes are applied they would coast vehicle, not stopping right away. Brakes would not catch or lock. Pedal goes to floor. No pulsating.the rear brakes were adjusted, causing the braking action to become worse, front pads were replaced and later found to be glazed and brindled.

After replacing transmission, transmission failed again. Consumer was driving approximately 65mph andvehicle just gradually started slowing down.consumer coasted toside ofroad withengine still running, but not able to go in any gears.transmission was replaced 1-22-00. Vehicle experiences several transmission problems, there have been recalls amongst the repairs, driveshaft broke while driving, consumer states that chrysler corp has no records of a transmission being sent to new country dodge where the replacement took place, transfer case was retorqued, consumer had taken vehicle to dealer many times prior to complete transmission failure and dealer could not remedy problems.clunking noise under vehicle, dealer replaced front swaybar links.o2 sensor replaced.consumer stated at times he hadto hit the starter with a hammer to get it to work, ignition coil failed, andbattery failed.vehicle stalls when coming to a stop, check engine light illuminated.excessive amounts of fuel used, distributor cap was replaced, vehicle also backfiring.brakes grinding, front brake pads were metal to metal, rotor was scored badly, dealer replaced front pads and both rotors.

Consumer states frontal brakes were replaced.

Rotors rotted. Unable to resurface had to be replaced due to uneven wear.

Due to improper under engineering for the size of vehicle, the rear brake shoes burn, which causes extended stopping distance and may resultin a crash.please provide further information.

1) events leading up to failure- normal operation. Vehicle 9 years old.2) failure and its consequences- steel brake tube supplying the rear brake system completely deteriorated from corrosion at the last clamp station prior to the connection to the rear brake hose assembly. Premature corrosion of the steel brake tube at the last clamping station ruptured the steel brake tube resulting in 95% loss in vehicle stopping power when the brakes are applied. Brake failure.3) actions taken to correct the failure- steel brake tube will need replaced.

While driving my 1997 dodge ram 1500 on an interstate highway near philadelphia, pa at the 65 mph speed limit, traffic was slowing.i put my foot on the brake pedal and it went to the floor without warning.pumping it did nothing.i had total brake failure.fortunately, there were no vehicles in the two lanes to the right of me, i swerved and got the truck on the shoulder of the highway.if there would have been vehicles to my right, i would have rear ended the vehicle in front of me, causing a multiple vehicle chain-reaction type of crash.inspection of the vehicle along the highway showed brake fluid running out of the brake line that runs from below the master cylinder to the brake proportioning valve near the proportioning valve.i was not aware that brake systems could have a total, abrupt failure as this system did.the truck was towed to a repair facility.their diagnosis was that the steel brake line was severely corroded and had rusted through.all steel brake lines on the vehicle were replaced because they all were rust colored and showed corrosion.this truck has approximately 60,000 miles on it.it is used as a second vehicle and has always been garage kept and well maintained.the garage along with myself are amazed that the brake lines show this type and amount of corrosion.how many other failures have occurred with these trucks?this could have been a severe crash with excessive property damage and/or bodily injury.

Brake line corroded on drivers side rear behind gas tank. Replaced.

While driving my truck in a busy shopping center, approximately speed of 20 mph, i applied my brakes to stop at a stop sign.the brake pedal went to the floor.i had no brakes as i proceeded through the crosswalk in front of a department store. Just a few seconds before, i had pulled out of the parking space, applying my brakes to put the vehicle in drive and again applied my brakes at the end of the parking row .each time, no indication of any problem, braked felt and worked as normal.i was able to avoid the pedestrian in the crosswalk and negotiate the parking lot to an area where i could come to a stop and inspect the vehicle.i found the front reservoir of master cylinder empty of brake fluid.i went to a local grocery store and purchased dot3 brake fluid to fill the reservoir and see if i can get any pedal back.was not able to attain any pedal pressure.when i checked the reservoir it was empty again.i located the fluid on the ground under my gas tank. The brake line above the gas tank had rusted through.i had the vehicle delivered to a goodyear repair shop, for repairs.the brake line that runs the length of the vehicle, to the rear end had to be replaced and the system was bled.the brakes are working normally again.i requested and have possession of the very rusted brake line.it appears to have a white id tag with 52055 on it.again, i want to stress that the rust was above the gas tank, not visible when conducting my normal vehicle maintenance - inspections.vehicle history:i am the original owner of this vehicle and it has never been off road. Several years ago, i did use this vehicle to tow a 15 foot fiberglas boat.the vehicle is a 1997 1500 ram with 59600 miles.i work from home for the past 2 years and this vehicle does not see a lot of use, hence the low mileage.when i was working at my former office, i had an 11 mile round trip to work plus personal mileage.

Dt: the contact stated while driving the brake pedal went to the floor.upon inspection, the steel line separated near the gas tank.the gas tank will actually have to be dropped to verify.the vehicle has not been to a mechanic, and there have been no repairs made.

When the brakes were applied, the pedal went to the floor and the vehicle did not stop.the consumer had to down shift and use the emergency brake. The mechanic stated the main brake line rusted out.

Metal brake line that runs from proportional valve to rear brakes was badly corroded and broke open.complete loss of brakes.incident occurred in driveway.no other metal lines or metal near broken line showed signs of corrosion. Replacing line.

Consumer was driving, heard loud noisewhen making left hand turn. Steering locked up, causing loss of control.bulletinis out on part, but it is on back order, steering damper was replaced prior at about 7000 miles.

Consumer states that the steering shaft and intermediate steering shaft were replaced.

When driving out of a hospital parking structure, when coming to the exit on the lowest level you must make a sharp right turn into the exit booth lane. When turning right, it was as if a "tooth" inside the steering gear broke off causing a collision with the rail while exiting the parking structure. Now the steering has an excessive amount of play and while in the center of the (steering play) it is as it binds or sticks at times where the "tooth" used to be on the steering gear. It has become quite dangerous to drive, especially at high speeds or on the interstate as the vehicle tends to wander now and follow the cracks in the road. I have owned dodge ram pickups for the last 20 years since i bought my first brand new ram pickup and let me tell you, they have all had issues with loose steering boxes, even the new one. But when they break, that is a dangerous situation that people cannot see coming with a normal inspection as on the outside, wear is undetectable. I have been an ase certified technician the better part of my adult life and this is unacceptable. I am sure chrysler has investigated this issue already and found that it would just cost too much to recall all these vehicles to repair them but the least they could do is sell a part priced at cost to share the burden with the consumer. It may save someone's life

The hub went out on the vehicle and was replaced immediately with a new one. Drove approximately 10 miles and the brand new hub did the same exact thing. I can not figure out what keeps causing the issue nor can i afford to keep replacing them. I have had several dodge rams over the years and while the hub does go out on them i have never had one go out right after putting it on. I have done my research and noticed this is a very common occurrence withthis year model truck. Something needs to be done.

"takata recall" todays date 4-29-2016,i have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 and i would like to know all the recalls on this truck.i have a few problems coming on with my truck.im needing a replacement air intake system its called engine and engine cooling. Suddenly i felt some shaking in front tires.i still don't know what it was but my steering pump with out and now the steering gear box.everytime im finish working on one problem the next is right behind.my dash board is fall apart.dash board is all in pieces.getting worst and worst everyday.last problem my air bag blew out and busted in my face.my truck was parked when it happened with the air bags, but i was driving down the road when the power steering with out. Please help me get my recalls on my truck and thank you so much.

Steering wheel mechanism locked in place at 50mph crashing into a telephone/electrical pole with live wires coming down around vehicle. Injuries significant. Chp agreed mechanism locked. Dodge/chrysler corporation said they had no responsibility for steering wheel locking up while at 50mph.

The intermitent steering shaft "rattles and bangs" contantly.steering column has already been replaced. Problems have existed since delivery of vehicle.

The steering column has been replaced because of the plastic bushing and now there's an clicking noise and vibration in the steering column when driving between 25-35 mph.please describe details.

While backing out of driveway the steering column began to make a popping sound and the whole thing just fell in consumer's lap. Dealer was contacted.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500.while attempting to make a left hand turn at 5 mph, the steering column locked up and the contact lost control of the vehicle.no warning signs were illuminated at the time of the failure.the failure occurred three additional times.she took the vehicle to two local mechanics, but they could not diagnose the cause of the failure.the manufacturer was notified and the contact is planning to take the vehicle to be inspected by a technician.the vehicle has not yet been repaired.the failure mileage was 69,800 and current mileage was 69,885.

While driving on a curve to the left at highway speedsteering wheel locked up. I tried to turn steering wheel and it would not move, hence i drove off highway and truck rolled end for end. Seated belt was used and air bag was deployed. I sustained internal injuries and was hospitalized.

I purchased this truck in a damaged condition after replacing parts that were necessary on front suspinion including track bar which was worn badly for a truck with only 65000 miles truck was taken in for an alignment even after this truck has tendency to wander on road i beleave this is caused by incorrect preload on steering sector which can be adjusted upon researching this on internet i find this tends to be a common problem on these trucks i called chrysler to see if they would do any kind of policy adjustment on box they said no i feel that this is a safety issue and not a wear problem and sense truck was wreaked by previous owner i wonder if this might have been a contributing factor as the looseness in steering box is not connected to accident and with number of people complaining cannot be coinsidential

Dt:consumer states the steering gearbox on the vehicle has a problem.while pulling from the driveway consumer was unable to steer.vehicle was going about 20mph.luckily consumer made it back to the driveway.consumer feels this was the steering gearbox.vehicle is unable to be driven.after inspection of the vehicle, consumer felt as though it is the gearbox.vehicle has not been taken to the dealership, but plans to have dealer to double check this issue.

While driving, consumer could hear and feel a clicking/knocking noise, dealer replaced the steering shaft, however the gear box was found to be the problem, consumer states that at dead center, he could feel no steering contact with linkage.

Consumer took vehicle to dealerto have brakes done and a gear box put on, and consumer found outthat fornt coil springs were busteddue to defective steel.

When making a left turn on a road or a parking lot, and there is water in the road, the water will splash on the power steering belt. At this time i lose all steering control and i keep going in the direction that the wheel is in. This has happened at least three times. After about one to two seconds the steering returns. So far there have not been any accidents. I would like to know if there have been any other complaints like this and what i can do to prevent this from happining again.

Hears a clicking/popping sound when turning steering wheel. Problem located in joints connecting to steering gear box. Took to dealer & informed need to order parts. Owner still has vehicle & drives it.

No summary listed for this vehicle.

There was a loss of steering due to a loose steering knuckle. Driver was unable to steer the vehicle and hit another vehicle. Chrysler has seenvehicle, and said it was not a factory defect.

I drove 20 miles to pick up my elderly father to take him out to lunch last friday, the 21st of march, 2008.after we got in my truck, (1997 dodge ram pu 1500),i put in reverse to back out of the parking lot, i heard a hissing sound and realized the air was coming out of my tire.i got out of the truck, the tire was flat and i noticed the tie rod had broken, and dropped down and put a hole in the rim of my tire.if i had been driving 55mph down the highway, we would have been severely injured or worse yet, killed!!it cost me over $350 and i heard someone else say that someone they knew had the same experience.i did not hear anything before to alert me to the fact that anything was wrong with the tie rod.i feel this is a dangerous defect and chrysler should look into this situation-especially since i had no warning.i also had to have my truck towed 20 plus miles to repair shop,(and had to pay the tow bill), had to have someone else drive 20 miles to come and get me and i was without use of my truck for transportation for awhile.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge 1500. While the vehicle wasbeing inspected, the contact was advised by the dealer that thefront outer tie rod ends were defective. The dealer repaired the vehicle. The contact stated the tie rods that were replaced bythe dealer failed. The dealer advised the contact thatsince there was no warranty and the contact be liable for the repair. The vehicle was repaired and both of the tie rods failed a third time. The contact spoke with the dealer who offered no assistance. The contact stated the parts needed for a third repair were not available because there was a backlog on ordering the part. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 28,900 and the current mileage was not unknown.

Dash has cavedin and cracked.

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 p/up with a cracked dashboard. I understand this is a major problem, and feel dodge should do something about it.

I own a 1997 dodge ram 1500.the dash started cracking by itself and is caving in.my research on the internet and research by local tv (wkmg) indicate that this is happening all over- every dash on a dodge pickup will crack and fall apart.this creates a safety hazard with the wiring.dodge refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem.

The dash on the pick up has cracked in several areas. It is my understanding that it may collapse in the near future.

I have three cracks in the upper part of my dash in my 1997 dodge ram 1500. This seems to be a common problem with 1994-2001 dodge ram trucks.

Dash cracking on a 97 dodge ram 1500.

The dash on my 1997 dodge ram 1500 is cracking for no apparent reason.

When i got the truck there were minor cracks in the dash nothing to noticeable and i don't use armor all or any silicone based product on it and the cracks have worsened mainly on the driverside and on the passengerside the dash is cracking over the glove compartment and the windows are 5% tinted and a window shade is always used day or night put i've read up on the problem and its on all models 94 and up and it makes no sense to buy a new one from the dealer when the same thing is going to happen with the poor quality of materials used to make.

1997 dodge 1500 ram truck, cracked dash board in several places. Many owners new and old are having problems with this issue. Dangerous for airbag deployment and wiring issues in dashes.

1997 dodge ram 1500 dashboard shattered under consumers hand.*cwthe consumer also wanted to add that chrysler pt cruiser has the same dash problem. Updated 03/08/10

Cracking of dashboard and short in headlights.

I own a 1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4 extended cab. My dash board is cracked in the center from top of radio to the base of the windshield. Don't know why it cracked it just appered.

Paint has also failed on lower side panels. Vehicle has been well taken care of. Want to know if there is any recourse to get fixed.

Dashboard and all other interior plastic deteriorating, cracked, broken, falling into firewall area. While driving at night on i-95, large piece of dashboard broke off and fell into area behind speedometer and caused dash lights to go out. This scared me terribly and i was able to pull off the road and reconnect the wire coupling to get my dash lights back on.

Alright so as i bought my truck and have asked around many places and all have the same type of rust and most of it is where the idler arm bracket meets the frame at the front frame rail on the passenger sideonly and also the frame has been well taking care of you can look down the rest of the whole frame and its barely touched by rot and what happens is it tends to rust out and then breaks and can cause a accidentmany people consider patching if its not too bad and many have junked it due to it being not replace abledodge has been contactedmany times also and refuse to do anything about itsomething needs done about these cheaply made frames i've owned vehicles 9 years older and the frames where no where near rotted.

My dash is literally falling apart. I bought it in february with 0 cracks and now it looks like a piece of peanut brittle. I searched and apparently this is a huge problem. I just want it fixed.

Dash cracked and started to fall inside, large pieces fell on floor. I hard to pay 3 hours of labor plus the price of the new dash board.

Dash board cracking all upand falling apart making sharp exposed plastic pieces easily to get cut on .

1997 dodge ram 1500 - tan interior - 2 cracks opened up from the front to the rear of the dashboard about 1/8" wide. This happened overnight, with no adverse weather conditions and no changes in habits. Nothing was placed on the dashboard. I am concerned that the location of the cracks will interfere with or damage the air bag if it is deployed, not to mention the shrapnel that would be created because the crack is so close to the airbag area on the passengers side. There is no reason for this on a 12 year old vehicle.

The plastic dashboard top suddenly began breaking into large, sharp shards and falling apart.once this began, electrical problems inside the dash began, including radio feature failures, headlight switch wiring, etc.

I have a 1997 dodge ram pickup and the dash is cracking and falling in. This started in 2000 and has gotten worse over the years. Dodge told me there was nothing they could do.

The dash board on my 97 dodge ram has cracked in several places. One major concern is the dash cracked over the air bag, i can see electrical components inside the dash area. Dash started with small cracks, now huge holes and nothing really holding the dash up now!!

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4 sport.three years ago i noticed cracks forming on the top of the dashboard.since then the cracks have worsened to the point that large pieceswere about to fall off.iheard recent reports that when the inside of the dashboardwasexposed that electrical problems occurred, lost lights, etc.i have heard of these pieces falling in such a way that the gas pedal waslocked in a position.i am concerned about my safety inthetruck.) i had gotten a quote to have the dashboard replaced last year but it was too expensive.

Cracks in dashboard.

Purchased a used 1997 dodge ram in 2001.the dashboard began to crack.now, there i was a large hole when part of the dashboard broke off, and another crackwas beginning to form.when i asked the dealer and the manufacturer about the problem i was told that this item was not covered under warranty and therewas no recall on this item either.i researched prices on a replacement dashboard, and they were very expensive, time consuming, and labor intensive project.this dashboard should last more than four years ,a four year old dashboard should not be falling apart.there was definitely a problem with this dodge line of equipment.note:i would not have been aware of this widespread problem if it were not for channel 6 news.

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 and the dash is cracked seems to be a problem with this model of dodge i live in texas dodge wont replace the broken part its obviously defective.

The dashboard on my 1997 dodge ram 1500 has not just cracked, but broken into jagged pieces.i have never used any type of chemicals or polishes on the dashboard, and it still just cracked into pieces.

The dash in my 1997 dodge ram 1500 is completely caved in and in thousands of pieces. This dash piece is what holds the vin in place, i now have it stored in the vehicles glove compartment. I have been informed by many dodge owners that this problem is not just mine but many of their products. I was also informed that contacting dodge directly would get me nowhere. Im here asking for help in righting this situation, im a disabled veteran and cant afford to buy a dash for my truck. Thank you very much

I have a dodge ram 1500, recently i discovered that my dashboard was cracking into sections about a-half foot each or more.there is also a gaping hole at the vin number display area, that allows me to see down in the inside of the dash. I want to know why this is happening?

The dash in my 1997 dodge ram 1500 is disintegrating.it's just falling to pieces with sharp jagged edges everywhere.......

I own a 1997 dodge 1500 pickup truck and the dashboard is literally falling in pieces.this truck has been treated with a lot of care and has been detailed frequently to keep its appearance like new.it surprised me to see a small crack and i immediately sealed the crack to avoid it getting larger.i was amazed that larger cracks started appearing in various areas of the dashboard and soon it started to fall in pieces.

The entire dash panel has cracked and shattered.the entire top portion of the dash panel is missing, exposing the gauges and wires.the bezel around the gauges and cup holder is cracked.the remaining part of the dash panel is loose and vibrates, making noises during travel.dash continues to crack and fall apart during travel.

My dash is cracking all over around vin number from the defrost vents. I keep my truck in the garage and in the last 2 years it has crackedmore and more and for two yrs i have not driven it more than 1 thousand miles cause i am not home to drive it. Also the column on the sides of the windshield i can not see around them i have almost hit several peopleand cars this is a blind spot right in front of me i don't know if it is because of the seat and wear i sit i think this column is to fat and obstructs my view.

The 1997 dodge ram dashboard is cracked through out. I have tried to bandied the problem , but it just keeps getting worse.

1997 dodge ram 1500 the dash is crack all over.

Dodge ram with 65,000 miles dash has spit in several places this is uncalled for on a 20,000 dollar truck. There was a malfuction in the production of these dashes and chrylsler should make them good. I took it to the chrylsler company that i purchesed it from, and they said it would cost me around 200 dollars. Its also a safety hazzard, i hope no one gets cut from the sharp edges.

The contact was able to locate similar complaints via internet for the exact failure in his year, make and model. The vehicle was not repaired. I have a 1997 dodge ram and the dash board is now cracked in 4 different places were one of the screws is holding it on there were now you can see wires through the dash so my lawyer told me to check with u all to see if there were any recalls on the dash boards ???

Dashboard cracked in two places. This cracking was apparently spontaneous.

My dashboard in my 1997 dodge ramstarted cracking and before i knew it i had gaping holes in the dash board. It is an eye sore to me and i am currently trying to look for a dash board through the internet.i wish i could get some help in paying for this.

Dash board is all cracked and broken apart. With every bump in the road the dash shakes bad and worsens from the lack of no support holding it in place. With the a/c, heat, or defroster blowing out the vents plastic also blows out. Trying to clean out my eye when driving is tough. Just waiting for the day i hit a bump and the dash falls to my feet.body would be the paint on roof and hood, discoloring and peeling off

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that the dashboard was severely cracked. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

The posts on each side of the windshield are approx. 6" wide and restrict the drivers visability serverly. My son and i have similar truck dodge truck models and we have had several near accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles. My most recent near collition was with a railroad locamotive at an ungated crossing. Luckly another driver alerted me to the locamotive and i saw it in time . However it was complely hidden from my view by the post . I have owned dodge trucks for the past 23 years with over 700,000 miles of service and have always found them reliable an safe .

While pulling onto a ramp rear wheel locked up. Vehicle taken to a repair shop, and informed consumer that pinion gear sheared off in rear end. Dealer and the manufacturer were notified. The vehicle made a noise when accelerating uphill, the heat shield broke and was fixed. The transmission locked up.

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4. While driving approximately 65-70 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently. The failure mileage was 126,000 and the current mileage was 127,000.

Had to replace the balljoints on my dodge ram1500 at 50,000 miles, new programs have indicated dodge is having problems with ball joints. I asked doge customer service if this is normal wear, they only said there are no major compaints with ball joints. It appears this maybe a very wide spread problem with dodge.

Ihave not used this vehicle in any manner that would cause the wheel bearings to fail this early in fact i have owned10 other vehicles and never had the bearings go on any of them.there was no indication , noise or otherwise that they were failing.we had the brakes redone in december of 2000, with the front rotors having to be replaced because they were so worn.if there were a problem shouldn't they have noticed it when they took the rotors off. Just makes me wonder.

When driving consumer heard a noise coming from the front end ofvehicle, consumer contacteddealer.dealer linked the problem to the front wheel bearing which was fallingoff the vehicle, dealerwas replacing parts. *ml

I bought this truck from a used dealer in tupelo, ms on july 5, 2004.on august 27, 2004, my husband and i were driving around 65-70 mph down a 4-lane hwy in ms when i heard a weird noise from the front end.my husband was driving and as he started to slow down to get off on the shoulder, the front passenger side wheel bearing sheared the studs off and my tire went sailing off the truck, slamming the front end down onto the ground.when this happened it dented the fender and shoved the fender into the passenger door preventing it from being able to be opened.truck was towed from the scene of the accident on a trailer and a new wheel bearing was put in. The part is not available due to the studs being sheared off on a 4-lane hwy.when part was replaced the wheel bearing was checked on the driver's side, showing no reason for replacement.2 weeks later on my way to work, i felt a sudden vibration in the truck.i pulled off the side of the road and checked the truck, just by a sudden chance of luck i check the tire and the front driver's side tire had already sheared 3 of 5 lug nuts off.once again the truck was towed in for repair and a new wheelbearing was installed on the driver's side. While this truck has been in our possession, we have not done anything to it to make it shear studs and break bearings like that.the previous owner took very good care of the truck as well, including servicing and replacing parts, and maintenance.

The front wheel bearings had to be replaced at a low mileage.

During normal operation ofvehicle there was a noise coming fromrear end.dealership examinedvehicle, and determined that inner ring pinionbearing went out due to a casing deformation.please provide any additional information / attachments.

On may22 a tire separated. Goodyear was notified,an other failed on october 3.tire was adjusted at goodyear dealer.october 22, the tire separated on the freeway at night.the tred separated and flew into the highway.we were traveling with 2 small children, a young mother, and 2 senior citizens, plus a very valuable junior rodeo horse.a friend came by and helped us get off the highway.goodyear was notified on september 7, 2000 that these tires were malfunctioning, and did not disclose to us that this was a common occurrence.they were told that we haul. Horses and children, and chose to keep it a secret. These childrenhave suffered a terrible trauma being out on the freeway with this tire failing and causing a terrible noise when it hit the fender, causing damageto it. This is a very scary thing.goodyear advertises that their tires are safe for families. Not true. (tiresize: 245/75r16)( dot number:tire size: 245/75r16 )

Our first blow out came about 3 weeks after purchase of our new dodge ram van.after returning to a goodyear dealer, they replaced the one tire.since that date up until july 1999, i had 11 failed tires.either blow outs or flats.after many phone calls to the dealer mark thomas motors, chrysler, mark iii conversion, goodyear (this process took about 4 months), they agreed maybe my tires had a problem.they agreed to pay 200.00 towards a 500.00 bill to replace the tires.i had no choice since i really wanted to drive my new van. They said the tires may have been to light to be put on the heavy duty van.i have since had problems with the replacements, also goodyear wranglers.these were to be for heavy duty wear.they are far from wearing well.i have had other problems with this vehicle, but none as serious as the tire problem.my biggest concern is i was told by all agencies that it was not their problem when i first reported this original tire problem.it took everything i had along with a final threat to call my attorney before i got any assistance.after the firestoneproblem..i am very concerned and want to bring this problem out to the public..my children, their friends, my husband and my life are very important to me.to bad goodyear does not feel the same.i have been in contact with my dealer again as of today 112100.thank you for your time and obvious concerns in this matter.karen baca.( dot number:)

They will not recall the dashboards on any ram pickup even though this has been going on for over 20 years. If a piece comes off the dash and hits you in the face, it could cause you to swerve you truck and crash. There in lies the possibility for bodily injury.

My 97 ram has about 95% of the dash missing. I have saved piecesof it and parts if the instrument panel is broken off. I can be driving down the road,, hit a bump, and dash pieces will fall on the floor. Dodge needs to fix this.

I took my '97 ram 1500 to the dealer in 2002 for paint delamination on the hood.they had the hood painted for a $150.00 charge to us.soon thereafter the paint started to peel on the right fender and the cab roof.at this point i was still unaware of any actual factory defect, or paint delamination issues.i took the truck into the dealer again in 2004.the service manager took pictures, and requested assistance from the main office. He mentioned to me that thepaint for this and previous years was defective, and i could probably count on apartial payment by check, to have the truck paint fixed.we were denied any assistance becaue of the milage (139,000) and the fact that they already helped us once.

The dash is completely busted and i think that it needs to be replaced and the reason why is if i get into a wreck who am i going to blame whenever it short of my plastic dash comes to hit somebody in the face the neck or any other part of their body

The contact owns a 1997 dodge 1500.approximately three years ago, the dashboard began cracking in small squares.he had to glue the pieces back on the vehicle.the dealer advised him to call the dodge manufacturer for an approval number, but they refused.the current mileage was 189,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

Dash starting cracking and falling apart, wires got messed up and some things don't work. Parts of the plastic of the dash come out the vents when you turn on the heat or air. Part with the vin went somewhere to parts unknown.

Multiple cracks on dashboard, approx. 13 cracks

At ten thousand miles the vehicle began to surge, idling from 700rpms up to 1200 rpms. Vehicle is accelerating without warning. Problem will occur when stopped at a stop sign or sitting in park. Consumer pulled into driveway, parked and the vehicle began to surge up to 1200, nearlywent into the wall ofgarage. Consumer will provide vin.# at a later date.

It jerks when lightly accelerating.

A long list is available at humes of waterford,pa.the most amazing failure of the vehichle was when the driver's door flew open while driving around the bend and i was lucky thaat no oncoming traffic was coming.humes(dealer) fixed it by a horrible weld on the latch.

Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration resulting in vehicle collision into brick building, no deployment of both driver and passenger air bags during collision resulting in injury. Mjs

Cruise control servo location immediately behind left front bumper can cause servo to bend and open throttle unintentionally.also, a stud fastened to side thatholds heat shield in place became detached.dealer not aware of the problem. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Engine surges at idle; also pulls to one side or the other when braking.

While sitting at a gas station on a slight incline vehiclerolled backwards about thirty feet and collided with a fuel pump.the fuel pump was demolished, and fuel flooded the immediate area. Vehicle suffered scratches, a bent bumper and several dents.

I own a 1997 dodge 1500 ram p.u.i started my truck up towarm up. I then backed out of the drive. When i put truck in drive, it stalled. I started it back up and put it in drive again. The engine was going full throttle and it took off like a rocket. I cut the enging to look for a problem. Everything appeared ok so i started it up again and put it in gear. The engine was running so fast that even though i held the brake peddal to the floor the engine pulled me right thru a stop sign. I played with the gas peddaland it began to run normal. I then took it to my service station and had them look at it. They advisd me that it was a dealer problem and they could do nothing. I then proceeded towards to the freeway when it suddenld accelerated again. I then brought the truck home and am scared to drive it. I called chrysler corp. To see what the problem may be and they said they have never had any complaints about this and yet i have found several same or simular problems listed on your site.i also have had a problem with the cruise control. While driving on the freeway it suddenly stopped functioning, and hasen't worked since. Again chrysler claime to not be aware of any problems.the exact same thing with the cruise control happened on my 1998 plymouth van and it was taken care of under recall. It appears that either you are not relaying all these complaints to chrysler corp., or they are living in a vacuum.

Tonight my throttle got stuck on my 97 dodge ram 1500 (all stock parts).after stopping at a light, i pulled out, then accelerated to 50 mph, and let off the gas; but the truck kept accelerating.the throttle was stuck wide open, so pressed the brake, put the truck in neutral, shut off the engine and pulled over to the side of the road.it seems to be linked to the cruise control (which i never had on), or some sort of binding in the firewall where the cable links to the pedal in the cabin.everything seems to be working fine now, but i'm still going to investigate this further.

*la

The contact owns a 1997 dodge ram 1500.while driving 50 mph, the contact activated the cruise control.the speed increased to 55 mph without him pre-setting the speed.when the contact attempted to disengage the cruise control, the engine began to rev.he applied pressure to the brake pedal, but the cruise control would not disengage.the contact had to completely turn off the vehicle in order for it to disengage.he is in the process of having the vehicle diagnosed at the dealer.the failure and current mileages were 70,900. Updated 07/08/08.updated

Cruise-control,my cruise-control light comes on and i go to set my speed that i want and it doesn't work.i continue going and then the cruise will take over on it's own and start working and when i stop, it stops.i take off and then it will kick in and lock on and work and other times, when i want it to, it won't work at all.would this have anything to do with the springs and set up with the air bag recall on the 1997 dodge ram pick-ups, which i never received.i did get the recall for the hood latch problem and had that fixed immediately. I own a 1997 dodge ram 1500 pick-up truck and the mileage just turned 50,000, plus i have an extended warranty on it also. *nlm

The exterior mirrors fold back with wind resistance.

Heater core replacement needs done and worried about the dash cracking when put back in, it was a problem with a prior 97' ram i owned and know it's a chrysler problem and concerned about my dash on the 01' i now own.

The failure of the driver's side rear view mirror appears to be a manufacturer's defect. The mirror would not remain stable once the vehicle was placed in motion. As you drive the mirror would be pushed towards the driver's side window.after having the mirror replaced at my expense ($359.41), the invoice is received stated "mirror clips broken, replaced mirror with housing".the manufacturer should absorb these costly repairs because i believe the instability of the mirrors is a safety issue.*la

Both side mirrors move back and forth as you drive or when wind changes, dealer inspected said yes they are bad, new ones, $600.00, at only 15,000 miles at time of failure.talked to three others ,same type truck, who have this problem.

Exterior mirrors on both doors of the vehicle failed to remain in place by "moving in the wind". Dealership has examined vehicle, and determined thatmirrors needed to be replaced at consumer's cost.

Side mirrors shake and vibrate at all speeds .

Both exterior mirrors are defective. They will not remain stationary and move around in the wind. I have seen other similar vehicles with the same defect.i contacted the dodge customer department but they claimed no knowledge of the problem.i have tried to repair the defect but it was only temporary. They broke once again in several months. *nlm

Both exterior mirrors turn in while driving making it impossible to see. This is the same problem that others have been having such as complaint #'s 724822, 9001529, 890575, 882388, 747014. I purchased this vehicle used from a dodge dealership and after one day took it to them and discussed the problem with them and was told by some in the service dept. That they were not original mirrors. I know that these are the origianl mirrors by seeing over 100 trucks on the road with the same ones on them. I found that a sorry way to get by without discussing the problem with me, i was not asking them to fix them just if there was a way to do it. Regent dodge in nashville is a sorry excuse for a dodge dealership and no one should buy anything from them, and especially take anything to them to be worked on. I would appreciate any help on getting this problem taken care of since it is a major problem with being able to see other drivers while driving.

Both exterior mirrors would fold in while driving, causing blind spot and almost a vehicle crash. Dealer was notified, and replacemirrors, butproblem still reoccurring.dealer refuses any more assistance.feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

The two rear view mirrors have fallen.the dealer was notified.*nlm de los espejos laterales se estan desprendiendo.

The vehicles driver side rear view mirror failed to stay in place which resulted in poor visibility.*nlm

The failure of the rear view mirror appears to be a manufacturers defect. The mirror support arm became loose internal to the connection bracket on the vehicle and the mirror would not remain stable once it was set and the vehicle placed in motion. As you drive the mirror would just flap in the wind. After having the mirror replaced and looking at the malfunctioning mirror, my investigation concluded that there are four(4) internal screws and a bracket that secures and stabilizes and secures the mirror support arm internally. Two(2) of the four(4) screws securing the support arm was found to be loose and bouncing around inside the support cover. The screws or hardware shows no signs of being stripped or worn, they were just loose. With this mirror being a safety item, i feel the manufacturer should absorb this costly repair of $379.32 when these failures occur. Thank you very much for any insight or guidance you may provide in resolving this issue.

Upon removal of the factory installed windshield the consumer found the glass primer did not adhere to the windshield bonding frit.nlm

Wheelswere locking up and almost caused an accident.he took it to the mechanic, had to have axle bearing s replaced.

In 3/8/2006 i was driving my 97 dodge ram and suddenly i felt a shaking in rear tires and after that i tried to slow down braking but i lost the control of my truck and i saw my left rear tire passing beside me. The nuts were missing . I can see now that it's a manufacturer problem. How it can be corrected?

The hub went out on the vehicle and was replaced immediately with a new one. Drove approximately 10 miles and the brand new hub did the same exact thing. I can not figure out what keeps causing the issue nor can i afford to keep replacing them. I have had several dodge rams over the years and while the hub does go out on them i have never had one go out right after putting it on. I have done my research and noticed this is a very common occurrence withthis year model truck. Something needs to be done.

Wheel bearing are going bad about every three months we have put 4 on in 2 years. We can't afford to many more at 200.00 each.dt

While drivingon road at 80mphright rear wheel came off.consumer narrowly avoided having an accident.

Right front wheel came off truck while going down freeway.there was a slight vibration in the front end about 10 seconds before the wheel came off.the lug bolts were all sheared.there is no apparent wear on the wheel or rim.we went off the road and luckily i was able to keep the vehicle from rolling.had this been another mile down the road, we would have met a rock wall and suffered serious injury to passengers.

While driving at 65 mph accident occurred due to wheel disengaging fromvehicle. There were 2 injuries. Consumer adds that the tire was so hot that a fire had started in the median.

Left front rim has collapsed while driving at 35 mph. Dealer / manufacturer were notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was out of its warranty, and not covered under a recall.
