Air bag module failed.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram. The contact stated that while driving approximately 3 mph, the air bag inadvertently deployed. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 99v023000 (air bags) that could have been related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 230,000.
Was driving in white out conditions on feb 14, 2015 and had a accident with another vehicle that totaled my truck and my air bag never went off.
Consumer's vehicle was involved in a t-bone collision at40 mph, and the air bags were delayed 3 seconds or more before deploying.this caused consumer's head to hitthe steering wheel, andsustainrib injuries.consumer was not transported to the local hospital.dealer and the manufacturer were not notified.
1996 dodge ram 1500 ran of the road through a guardrail and into a wooden light pole, and drivers side air bag did not deploy.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 2 mph, the front driver's side air bag deployed inadvertently. The driver sustained bruising to both of arms from the air bag deployment. The contact was not involved in a crash nor was there any impact to the vehicle. Air bag light keeps coming on frequently. Have had service when it happens, have been told by durham dodge "don't worry about it, it's nothing!" it is not normal for this to occur and i feel unprotected when this light is on. No injuries yet, no crash yet. Do i have peace of mind that i can rely on my air bag ???? no!!!
Consumer was traveling 35mph,another vehicle veered into her lane and hitvehicle, knocking it across intoa fire hydrant, seatbelt didn't catch.consumer sustained injuries.also, driver's sideairbag didn't deploy. Investigator told consumer thatit wasn't a hard direct hit.*ml
Air bag did not deploy upon impact. After traveling 65mph & hitting a small vehicle that pulled in front of her.a representative from chrysler inspected vehicle and stated it was twisted and badly damaged, however airbag did not deploy due to the site of impact.

In the 1994-2001 model year dodge ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks there is no relay in the wiring circuitry use for the headlights.when the ram was redesigned in 1994, the engineers did not find it necessary to change the 40-year old design for the headlight system; feeling only the need to use a larger gauge wire to handle the excessive heat of the halogen bulbs. Unfortunately, neither the wires nor the switch or internal rheostat (for the instrument panel lighting) could handle this load and the following near tragic even has been an all too common occurrence. A recall (or at the very least a tsb has been issued for the 3500 model dodge rams, which are comprised of the exact same switch and wiring, but nothing has been noted about the 1500 or 2500 models.i cannot understand this, and this is the very reason i feel compelled to be writing this complaint in the first place.one night i was driving along the freeway at about 55-mph when the headlight switch, relay and connected wiring all became overheated, causing them to melt. Becoming frantic, i was able to quickly wiggle the dimmer switch (combination/turn signal switch), then the headlight switch until i got them to come back on.during that episode i had them go out on me about 4 times that i recall.currently the vehicle remains unfixed and is not drivable at night.being a mechanic, my first thought was to check the relays and fuses to see if they were blown or bad.to my dismay, i could not find any relays!this was how i discovered, through some online research, about the recurring problem with the headlight switch- how i was not alone in this situation and the rest of the aforementioned paragraph. I will gladly be available for phone calls, questions, and to take pictures of the parts in question.
I received notification from nhtsa of a recall for my dodge ram truck.i have tried since june 11, 2015 to make an appointment with crowne dodge of ventura, california and have received no response.i spent 30 minutes standing in line at the dealership services entrance and no live person came to inquire about my visit.i made an online appointment with crowne dodge and received an e-mail response they had received my appointment request.i feel this is just another attempt to ?dodge? the responsibility of a safety recall.1996 dodge ram 1500 2wd slt[xxx]ignition switch and electrical wiring.recallinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). Update 9/15/15*cw

When headlights are turned on there is a burning smell and smoke coming from dash near windshield. Once headlights are turned off the smoke stops. Vehicle has not been examined by dealer.
I went out on friday the 6th of feb.2015. I got a coffee at wawa everything was fine i left to go to my buddy's house to hangout and i started driving down the road n i noticed smoke coming out the vents when i was driving so i pulled over cuz i thought it was the heater core cuz when they go bad smoke comes out of them so i'm looking n looking n all of a sudden the smoke is getting heavier and darker within 20-25 mins after calling 911 there it happened my truck went up in flames n a total loss. Then that day after i got home n calmed down i looked it up n the first thing that popped up recall for wiring harness in dashboard shorts out n causes fires... I'm like really....
The dashboard in the dodge ramwas cracked and caved in. This created a safety issue as it exposed electrical systems to damage.
When applying the turn signal, the signal does not illuminate or is erratic or does alternate of what is chosen.
Continual electrical shorts causing fuses to blow.
I have this truck for 2 years and in that 2 years i have many complications with the electrical system. The main problem is the headlight switch melting and burning the wires in the dash. I have had the switch replaced twice and it continues to burn out and melt. I am so scared the truck is going to catch on fire one day that rareley drive the truck. I still have the old parts that were replaced but dont feel it is the switchcausing all the problems. I feel it is the whole wiring system. I read the custom reports on mycarstats.com it seems the 1996 dodge dakota had the same problems. There were even reports of the truck catching on fire. If this has already been reported on many differnet occaions; why havent they recalled it???i would appreciate a response and hopefully dodge taking care of this problem free of charge. Please help!!! [email protected]
Battery failed.
My truck would not start.first i was told it needed a new battery, then a fuel pump and finally a new ecu.it is impossible for all of these components to fail simultaneously while the vehicle is parked and shutdown.i was told by the parts man at dallas dodge that the ecus are designed to fail prmaturely.another customer also stated that the same computer in my turck is installed in a number of chrylser products and that it fails when other components fail (in his case when the abs failed).
5 core plugs replaced...intake manifold gasket replaced......throttle positioning senesor replaced...two batteries replaced
If driving with air conditioning on high, ingnition switch gets so hot it will burn your hand if you touch the bottom of collum, also you loose the engine in traffic. Brakes on rear not strong enough with load
Computer chip will not start the car, car dies in the middle of the road when traffic is coming. Consumer feels that there a computer chip that is causing the problem.

I took my 1996 dodge ram to the dealer for an ignition switch wiring recall.after the recall parts were replaced, my truck was not fixed.the wiring harness had overheated and damaged my ignition switch.this cost more money.there was also a special tool that my husband had to purchase to change the ignition switch.the plastic cover on my steering column had aslo melted.i would say my truck was very close to going up in flames.this is very upsetting to me because i feel this part should have been replaced along with the harness since the defective wiring caused this part to be damaged.i think dodge should add this part to the list of parts changed when they service vehicles from this recall.i also believe they should reimburse me and anyone else who has had this problem.there was almost a fire, i know this because i have the old ignition switch and the plastic part on my steering column has a hole where it was hot, since i did not see a fire (my husband did smell something burning), i cannot answer yes to the question below that asked "was there a fire?".any help would be greatly appreciated.i think something should be done before someone is seriously injured or killed.something similar happened to a friend of mine who had a different make car, her son burned to death in a car.i shiver to think what might have happened if i had not found out about the recall on this vehicle.
Consumer took vehicle to receive recall repair 00v135, however consumer had to wait a lengthy time due to dealership not having trained technicians, when consumer picked up vehicle, wires were hanging from steering wheel and vehicle would not go into 1st or 2nd gear, consumer took vehicle back and it ran fine the first day, the next morning it wouldn't crank again, consumer found battery cable loose and the fuse compartment cover fell off in his hands.

Dt:consumer states he owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500 pick up truck.while hauling a trailer, the wires from the trailer became caught between the trailer and the trailer hitch of the vehicle.this caused the wiring harness system to burn out.this caused the fuel gauge to fail, it shorted out the fuse to the fuel pump causing the engine to stall.the consumer has contacted the service dealer.he stated this was a serious problem with the vehicle.the service dealer stated the wiring harness came with a 40 amp fuse.the consumer asked for a 30 amp fuse to be installed but the service dealer would not install this type of fuse.the consumer contacted the manufacturer; they said they would consider refunding the consumers money for repairing the vehicle.a new harness has been installed in the vehicle.there was a recall issued for the wiring harness, the recall service was performed august 2, 1999.
Failed wire in the truck's trailer receiver plug.

The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500. When the engine was started, the rear of the vehicle emitted a fuel odor and fuel leaked from the fuel tank. The contact stated that the vehicle shook while the engine was running. The contact received a recall notice for the fuel tank rollover valve. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the vehicle already received the recall repair; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage and nhtsa campaign number were unknown.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500. The contact was driving 65 mph and noticed a loss of power in the vehicle. The contact then noticed smoke and flames shooting from under the hood. The contact safely merged off the roadway and exited the burning vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an impound lot. The vehicle remains were not inspected to determine the cause of the fire. The manufacturer was not notified of the incident. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000.
Sludge build up in engine stopping up the oil pan pick up,causing truck to loose oil pressure.now at 121000 miles the transmission blew.the truck has been losing oil pressure from the sludge since i bought it new in1996, i was told several times by the dealer, this was caused by the lacquer that the engine builder used to ship the engine to the usa, 318cui built in japan.the dealer cleaned the engine several times, the last time was in july 2003 costing about $1000 to me. I have been getting the run around from dodgeand the dealer, since the truck was under warranty when this first started and now at 121000 miles the transmission blew up.the sludge build up has happened 4 times over the past years, seems like about every 30000 miles, instead of fixing truck all they did was cleanup the mess afterward. When the transmission blew the motor lost oil pressure again, so this make 5 times the truck has done this, this has been reported to dodge several times but no help from them, they don,t want to stand by their truck and it don,t look like i can do anything about it. Thanks james c. Rose.

On april 19, 2001 while traveling on rt 495 in wareham ma the fan on my l996 dodge 1500 2 wheel drive sport pickup truck suddenly became unattached from the water pump shaft causing the fan to fly into the radiator and puncturing same.at the same time due to the loss of the belt that drives the power steering pump, and water pump causing difficult steering and engine overheating i immediately stopped in the breakdown lane. When this occurred the vehicle had 57159 miles.

This is twice the first gear has gone out, both times after a radiator flush, i was informed by a referral from a dodge dealership that the radiators are getting clogged and causing the tranmission to over heat and by the time the problem is figured out a new transmission in needed as well as a new radiator, approximate cost to the consumer, in the range of $3500.00.the recall for the clamps that were changed on the coolant lines to prevent them from melting was a good idea but they forgot one thing, a blow out valve for the tranmission so when it gets hot it can releive pressure and heat before it burns the transmission.
When driving at 35mph transmission went out/locked up, causing loss of all acceleration. Consumer contacted the dealer, dealer linked the problem to the radiator which backed up fluid, causing the transmission to go bad.please provide any further details.
Crankshaft failed.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500.the eighth cylinder on the engine is failing and the engine head is also cracked. The vehicle was previously repaired; however, the failure continued to occur. The contact paid $700 for the previous repairs.the dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced.the contact is aware of the safety risk involved.the current and failure mileage were 114,000. The vin is not available at this time.

Vehicle is onfourth engine and only 44,000 miles on present engine. Dealer says engine is out of warranty. Excessive blow by from engine. Check engine light comes on. Sensors have been replaced but problem still occurs. Also the truck wanders on the road, and has a rumbling rattle noise on front passenger side that sounds like its coming from the shocks area. But my mechanic says shocks are ok. The dealer did not check into problem when i purchased the truck but it is listed as complaint when the first engine was replaced. Have replaced tracking bar, u-joints, rear springs, stabilizer shock & tires. When going over bumps on highway vehicle jerks the steering wheel to side rail fast giving a fishtail effect.drive shaft has also been replaced.*la

I own a 1996 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.2 liter engine.the engine oil light would flicker when stopped at a stop sign in drive.i took it to the dodge dealership and they said that the engine would have to be replaced due to the wear.i have used mobile 1 synthetic oil since the breakin oil and never let the oil in the vehicle over 4,000 miles.each time the oil filter was also changed.the vehicle has 106,000 miles on it and the engine replacement is costing me $4.700.i've been told that the 5.2 liter engine does not handle synthetic oil well.the oil does not return to the oil pan fast enough to keep the bottom of the engine lubricated.i find this hard to believe but i've never wore out an engine before.my question is how can an engine wear out when it was taken such good care of?i've had several other failures of this vehicle dealing with u-joints, steering shaft, failed fuel pump, and an unstable suspension requiring a $500 piston assembly to repair but the repair did nothing to help.*nlm

Dissimlar metal contacts re. Tailight sockets and type 3157 bulbs.brake/turn/emergency flasher signal lights fail to light intermittently (both sides). Headlight switch got hot and melted itself and the electrical connector causing headlights to quit wroking while driving at night.dash was extremely hot above switch.no other electrical equipment added to headlight circuit.contacted chrysler but they said it was not their problem.i have the failed components and can provide them or pictures if required.replacement switch also included a connector and pigtail.is this because they see this problem a lot?normally you would have to buy parts separately.
The switch for the headlights must be false since this is already the second time in the two years that i have owned my truck that this has happened.i understand that recalls do occur, but this is very expensive and out of my wallet.now,i doubt that i will buy a dodge again since dodge does not cover its mistakes.
I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 pickup, with 104,000 miles. The head light switch short circuited which caused the wiring connector and the switch connector to over heat and melt. I have purchased a new switch and theauto parts store says this happens often. Also with the switch out of working order i had no lights, this happened at night.
Headlight switch overheats and catches on fire. All the lights in the dash will go out. Also. Dealer has sent an updated owners manuel.
Headlight switch failed due to overheating which caused headlights to go out while vehicle was traveling on interstate at 65mph. Dealer sold me a new switch/kit and provided installlation information for their safety recall 819 (which they said did not apply to this vehicle).instructions talk about looking for a melted connector which indeed my switch does have.new wiring harness provides a resistor or something which my mechanic tells me is to dissipate heat!dealer and chrysler can not explain why this happened and offer no relief but i still feel if they know they have a problem and are making modifications to some of the vehicles why they are not required to make them on all of them, especially when the failure occurs without warning and you are left without lights!fortuantely i had fog lights and the presence of mind to turn them on!thank you.
Consumer called complaining about headlight switch problems. Consumer was aware that there wasa recall on the ram 3500series, but not on the ram 1500, which was the one he had. Dealer was contacted, and sold the consumer a replacement switch.he compared the new switch to the one on the 3500 series, and stated that they were identical. While driving home consumer smelt wires burning and the headlight cut off then came back on. Consumer stated if the switch was the problem on the older model ram's, then they are a problem with his later model.*ph *nlm

My husband was letting his 96 dodge warm up after a big snow and ice storm and someone stopped to tell him it was on fire.the fire started under the bed of the truck . They tried to put it out with extinguishers and water but to no avail it was completely lost by the time the fire truck arrived.
Fuel pump on my 1996 dodge pickup failed to pump gas to engine in august of 2000, while parked . The cost of replacement was approx. 450.00 dollars. I am concerned only because i paid $25000.00 dollars for this truck and figured that it sholud of lasted at least 100,000 miles. It just irritates me that chrysler will not, nor have they offered to look into this defective part, fuel pump. Also, transmission started slipping in august of 2000, after several attempts to contact chrysler, nothing has been done to correct this problem. The transmission slips (automatic) when shifting into third. This should also be considered a safety hasazrd.

Hood latch failed causing hood to open and obscure vision resulting in damage to vehicle.
I was accelerating onto a limited access highway, j. Turner butler blvd. Traveling approximately 45-50 mph when the hood of my truck released and crashed into my windshield blinding me. I was able to come to a stop and pull off the roadway without incident. Afterwards i did research to see if there were any recalls and found nhtsa 01v040000 for dodge ram 1500 pus for years 1994-1999 whichindicated corrosion of the spring on the secondary latch could cause it to bind in the release position. I believe this is what happened to my truck. The recall however was only for trucks sold or registered in the salt belt states in the northern part of the country. I reside in a coastal area of florida and purchased this truck used. It was originally sold on the west coast of florida and i am a resident of jacksonville beach, but it was used in coastal florida since it was sold.i am in the process of getting it repaired, and i will bear the cost since i just cancelled my comprehensive coverage (thought it was too costly for a 10 year old truck).i was just wondering why coastal regions were not included in the recall or if that needed more research?
The hood flew open while driving home, causing me to lose controland hitting the curb to stop the truck.dodge reusedto repair damage or supply me with a new latch, they statedthe primary latch gave way, causing the hood to open.dodge dealerstatedthe main latch was bad,if the secondary latch was operating as it was meant to the hood cound not have opened, dodge was at fault.i am now afraid to drive my truck, but it was my only transportation.
While driving home from work on 2/5/2007 the hood on the 1996 dodge ram p/u flew open, causing me to lose control of the vehicle.just missing a bus, then coming to a stop after hitting the curb.the hood was damaged along with the windshield, also, front endhit the curb. Dodgerefused to repair and replace the hood latch becausethey claimedthe primary latch was defective, they only had a recall for the secondary latch.in the recall it stated that the hood could open if the primary latch was defective.if the secondary latch was not defective it would have prevented the hoodfromopening completely.i did not receiveany recall notice for anydefective hood latch.i could have been killed and/or killedother innocentpeople if this were to happen afterenteringi-95.dodge should be forced to repair all hood latches on these vehicles, onewas no good without the other.after taking my truck to a dodge dealerthey left the hood completely unlatched, anddid not replace the bungy cord i hadplaced to prevent the hood from opening.when will dodge be forced to repair this seriousproblem. After someone is injured.dodge was negligent in allowing these latches to be kept on these vehicles.
On 3/9/06 my hood on my 1996 dodge ram 1500 blew open on the highway. There is damage to the hood and the hood hidges. There was a recall on the hood latch #01v04000. I contacted dodge about this, they told me that they would repair the latch but not the damage to the truck. They should repair the damage also, since i did not receive the recall notice.

Transmission failed.
Transmission skips/slips second gear continually, unable to rectify.
Transmission keeps slipping. It shifts really hard then it doesn't want to shift later on.
Was shifting into drive & vehicle failed to move. Acted like it was still in park position. Had to gun motor to shift & vehicle would jerk forward quickly. Would have to keep foot on brakes when this happened. The problem was intermittent. Had taken to dealer to have it checked & nothing could be found.
Under normal operating conditions transmissionfailed, causing vehicle to stop operating.a transmission specialist has examinedvehicle and determined that the transmission will need to be rebuilt/replaced.note:specialist said that had had to rebuild/replace several dodge truck transmissions.please provide any additional information/attachments.
Transmission failure. Also premature wear of brakes and always pull to the left.
This is the second time that my trans has failed since i purchased it. First time the dealership rebuilt it under warranty. This time it is just ?!@#$% i have never had so many problems with a vehicles powertrain as i have had with this one. I' m not the only one who has this problem either. I'm worried that the next time it goes out it could cause an accident.
Normal driving into mountains and auto transmission shifted out of overdrive and would not shift back, even down hill. Checked fluid and very hot and started to smelled burnt. Has been shifting hard.
Transmission is being replaced forthird time.transmission doesn't give a diagnostic reading.
Automatic transmission fails to shift into 3rd gear at any speed.fails to shift into reverse when vehicle warm.problem began intermittently but got progressively worse.took to dealer 7/99 and was unable to diagnose.dealer informed me transmission would need to be removed at my expense to complete diagnosis and repair.haveseen numerous similar complaints in your database and feel this is an obvious defect and should be subject to a recall.
The exhaust system and the radio were repalced with no problems from the dealer, the brake system i replaced myself, the transmission was repaired bythe dealership with a $100 deductable after contacting chysler, the pitman and idler arm have not yet been repaired, i am not driving the vechicle
The passenger's windshield wiper arm motor broke, which may cause visual difficulty. Also, the steering system is very loose, and dealer had to replace the steering shaft. While attempting to shift into 3rd gear or overdrive at speed between 40-45 mph, vehicle will either not shift and stay in 2nd gearso rpms continue to rise or will act as if in neutral and not shift or respond to the gas pedal, only resulting in high rpms.
Dodge ram - bad transmission(s)
Truck purchased used at dealership in 2000.transmission rebuilt in 2002.transmission failed in 2006.
I purchased the truck in 1996 new from parks motors in augusta, since that time i have had the transmission rebuild 3 times for the same problem, the transmission will not shift out of 1 or 2 gear or if it does it takes high rpms to do it.it was determined that a seal in the upper half of the transmission was faulty from the factory. The first time i had this rebuilt i covered the cost myself because of the low mileage warranty the second time i had this rebuilt chrysler agreed to pay for half of the problem because they knew it had been rebuilt once before and failed a 2nd time, the third time i paid to have it rebuilt out of pocket, i am now at the point of needing it rebuilt for a 4th time my truck has 120,000 miles on it now and i have yet to see a recall on this problem i have talked to many people who have had the same problem and have also been to many web sites describing the same problems i am having, the transmission also has a 5 mile an hour difference than what it should be. My incident date is not exact as this problem has occurred many times now over a 10 year period, i have also reported this before but never had any letters or have been informed as to what was going on from the dot.
Poor/loss of acceleration, shifting at high rpm's, hot floor boards. The generic transmission fluid used by dodge (1996) deteriorated the bands in the "transmission causing them to slip and fail is my opioion of why the transmission failed.
Transmission was slipping when accelerating, dealer stated transmission has to be rebuilt.consumer states that this seems to be a defect, and there should be a recall.*scc
Transmission failed after making knocking noise which got progressively louder over a period of several months. A new transmission was installed and now that transmission is making the same noise after only a few days. I believe that this model of transmission may be defective as it failed after only 58,000 miles and now the new one is making the same noise that the old one started out making.

Chrysler said they would consider goodwill assistance if problem develops after warranty. In june 2000, at 49898 miles, trans failed. I paid $100 deductible on trans overhaul per goodwill assistance file 7360750. A few days later, seal failed and pumped out trans fluid. Dealer replaced seal. In sept 2000, dealer couldn't find reason for trans overheating at 54480 miles. In nov 2000, trans failed at 57426 miles. Dealer finally agreed to replace with remanufactured trans. In dec 2000, trans failed again, at 57492. I have been out tow bills and not lender vehicle.

The transmission has been replaced several times, three of the transmissions were replaced by the dealer, however the most recent transmission the dealer would not replace even though it had only failed after 4000 miles.

The brakes on my 1996 dodge ram failed. The dealer "kirkwood dodge" said the metal brake line had rusted through.*la
I was traveling to town and as i entered the town as i started to brake i could feel that my brake pedal was feeling spongy and the pedal seemed to be going to the floor. I felt as though 90% of my braking was gone. I was able to stop safely though i had very little braking. I felt that i could not stop safely in an emergency. I returned home very carefully at slow speeds. After looking my vehicle over i saw that all the brake fluid was gone from both the front and rear compartments of the master cylinder. Under my vehicle it seemed to be wet from brake fluid between the fuel tank and frame rail where the brake lines run. The brake lines had rusted through and leaked out all fluid. I feel there may be 2 dangerous issues. 1 that if the front or rear line leaks, the remaining chamber of the 2 chambers in the master cylinder should not loose its fluid. This allows limited braking with the brake section that has not lost its fluid. The 2nd issue is that the rear brakes line runs in the frame rail between the fuel tank. The fuel tank is constantly sweating on humid days which subjects the brake lines to constant rusting. Until they rust through. I may take several years. With the brake line running in the vehicle frame rails very close to the fuel tank you can not easily see if any rusting has occurred until its too late.i have also had another vehicle of another manufacturer also rust completely through loosing all brakes. I feel any vehicle that has a fuel line in the frame next to a fuel tank will also rust through. Because of the fuel tank sweating.

Was driving on highway at 65 mph, i crossed a small bump in the road and lost all control of the 1996 dodge ram 1500 4x4 pickup. It shook all the stuff off of my seat as well as my cd holder. This is the second time this has happened. I am at a loss as to how to look for the problem. I love this truck but i have gone through two wheel bearings and a tie rod end and i have only had it for a year.... I want to know how to fix this problem before someone gets killed.

My dealer replaced the steering column with a new one under warranty. July of 99 the steering column started making the same noise. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer again and i was told that the clock spring was bad. I had a new clock spring installed but this didnot correct the problem. The dealer refunded my money for the clock spring and the cost of the labor to install it. Front end of vehicle was disassembled to find out where the noise was coming from. I was told that the steering column had gone bad again. At this time the vehicle had 55984 miles on it and it is out of warranty. The new steering column lasted just a few days shy of two years and a little over 30,000 miles. The dealer said that since the vehicle is out of warranty, i'll have to pay the full repair bill to have the vehicle repaired. I called chryslers hot line number and explained to them that the new steering column shouldn't have gone out in only two years and 30,000 miles. They told me that as a good faith messure they would go 50-50 with me on the repair. This isn't right! no way should that part go out in two years. That means, if i keep the vehicle, every two years i'll be spending $500 for a new steering column.

My dodge ram 1500's dashboard is completely falling apart. It started 5 years ago and has accelerated over the past three, no matter how protected the dash board is from the sun. It has multiple cracks which are causing the dash board to collapse and become lose and is becoming a safety hazard as well as very unappealing. I purchased this truck new and have taken excessively good care of it.there is no reason that this problem occurred due to my actions.it is a quality of manufacture and materials.
Large cracks in the top of the dash. Started as a smaller crack and as time has passed it is now enormous and the dash is split into 2 pieces.
I bought the dodge ram used a (1996) i love the truck, except for the dashboard. It started as one small crack, and is from the windshield all the way back to the gauge cluster. And now there are more cracks starting ! i know it's just a matter of time before i too have a caved in dashboard!
The top side of the interior dash started cracking approximately 9 months ago and within very short time frame, it now has very large, multiple cracks.seem to have started around the vent areas.it also has a problem with surging when driving at a lower steady speed.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500.seven years ago, the contact noticed the vehicle's dashboard beginning to crack at approximately 20,000 miles.the dashboard was not repaired and the contact put a padding down to protect it from the sun.the dashboard is still cracking.the contact has pictures.the current mileage is 73,000 and failure mileage was 20,000.
1996 dodge ram 1500 dash pad has multiple crack every dodge owner i know has the same cracks in the same places this is a defect i paid enough for my truck and now they say its going to cost 600.00 to fix this problem someone needs to do something about this.
Dash panel cracked which seems to be indicative of dodge pickup. This flaw should become standard recall as soon as possible. Chrysler, dodge, should step up to the plate.
1996 ram 1500 sway bar attachment failed. The consumer stated when the sway bar fell to the ground, it caused the front wheels to rapidly go from full-left to full right at the rate of several times per second. Subsequent inspection showed that the sway bar plate had never been machine welded to the frame and for several years had been held on only by three small spot welds, meant to hold the plate in place for the machine welder. The machine weld appeared to be about an eighth to a sixteenth of an inch off, missing the entire plate.
Dash cracking.cracked earlier, date listed is when i bought it.
I have a 1996 dodge ram and like just about every other ram owner my dash is cracked all to pieces.all the other pictures of dodge rams that have cracked dashes the cracks are in the same place as mine this is a defect and dodge knows it but refuses to fix it they would rather me pay 600.00 to have it replaced this is complete '!@#$%someone needs to step in and address this problem.
The dashboard was devoloping cracks throughout. The crackswere developing into holes. There was no crash or incident.
Dashboard started cracking in 2010 and broke off into sharp pieces. I have about 25% of my dashboard left. This was not caused by anything i did. I kept a sun reflector in the windshield and have never been in an accident.
Dash boardcracked and fell apart on a 1996 dodge ram 1500 truck.
Dashboard cracking and chunks coming off.
Cracks in the dashboard of my 1996 dodge ram 1500. I thought it was sun damage and purchased a dashboard cover for it but have seen on tv that other dodge owners have similar problems.
I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 truck and the dash board is falling apart. It started as small cracks around the vents and soon speed all over the dash. I am worried about the function of the air bag system. I have talked to other dodge truck owners and they have had the same problem. I think it must be bad material the dodge used in the dashes.
I bought a 96 dodge ram 1500 ext cab brand new from michigan i have been the sole owner of this vehicle and take care of it as need be. My dash board started out cracking then more cracks that grew larger and larger until they just broke into pieces, so now i have no dash at all. You can buy new dash boards from dodge but also have to buy the bezel because the bracket pattern has changed. That's going to cost around $400 plus have someone install it. This is obviously a factory defect that dodge should be held responsible for. My vehicle is not the only vehicle like this i have seen many others just in my area.
1996 dodge ram 1500's sway bar link broke while driving. Prior to the sway bar breaking, the vehicle began to shake violently.the vehicle was brought to a stop on the side of the road.subsequent inspection of the truck showed that the sway bar plate had never beenmachine welded to the frame and had been held on only by three spot welds.the problem was brought to the attention of the manufacturer but they were not interested and provided no assistance.
The dashboard in the dodge ramwas cracked and caved in. This created a safety issue as it exposed electrical systems to damage.
1996 dodge ram 1500 slt:i bought this truck brand new and approximately 5 years ago, the dashboard started cracking.it has been continuously cracking into little pieces and now i have no dashboard and i don't know if the passenger airbag is operable.
I own a 1996 dodge ram that had a large section of the paint on the hood peel off down to the sheet metal in one day.approximately a 2'x2' section.chrysler along with the ross park dodge dealership in pittsburgh pa.will do nothing.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500. While driving approximately 45 mph, the hood latch detached unexpectedly which caused the hood lid to release and crash into the windshield glass.as a result, the front windshield shattered upon impact. In addition, the hood lid was slightly bent. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 176,000.
On 1/27/2018 my dash board shattered while i was attempting to wipe clean it with moist towel. I bought this vehicle used from dodge dealership in june 1998 with 45120 miles. At present it has only 83000 approx.the vehicle at the time was stationary.i have the photos, unfortunately i do not know how to upload it.
The contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500. The contact stated that the hood flew open while driving approximately 35 mph. The contact was able to close the hood, which seemed to be secure however the failure recurred once he reached 60 mph. The hood violently struck the front windshield and caused the glass to shatter. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that there was a manufacturer's recall for the failure but he believed that the recall was expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 193,000.
Paint is starting to peel off in sheets on the hood and other parts of the vehicle.
Tl-contact owns a 1996 dodge ram 1500.contact stated that while driving approximately 40,vehicle hood independently.this caused the windshield to crack and there was damage to the hood.the vehicle was taken to a dealer who repaired the latch on the hood under their independent recall. The damage to to the hood and replacement of windshield was not done by dealer.the manufacturer was notified of the defect.the approximate failure mileage was 83,458.rg.

Bumpers failed.
Water leaks around the doors and pools on the floorboard due to a possible gasket or seal failure.
I have a 1996 dodge ram the hood flew up and damaged the hood & grill and brackets.there was a recall on my hood latch, all they want to do is replace the latch and the brackets is this right, don't they have to fix the damaged parts caused by the defective part? i was never notified of the recall because i was the 2nd owner and never in there system.
The front grill on the hood has plastic fasteners that hold the grill onto the hood. These fastners are breaking as normal wear and tear. Dodge dealership said that this is a common defect. A potential deadly hazard considering the location of the defect.
While driving south on the new jersey turnpike on 0/22/08, the hood on my dodge ram 1500 opened crashing my windshield completely and damaging the hood itself.i was able to drive all the way to my destination in texas.while in texas, i was trying to find a replacement hood but was never successful until i decided to look for information online about my truck and came to the carfact website where i found the was a recall on the secondary hood latch on it.when i contacted the chrysler company about the recall the decided not to replaced the damaged hood and re-imburse me for the damaged windshield.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 45mph, the hood safety latch failed allowing the hood to fly upward into the air.the vehicle was taken to a dealer and the latch was replaced under a recall, however the dealer would not replace the hinges or hood.the nhtsa recall campaign id# is not available.

Tires wear excessively because vehicle cannot hold an alignment.
While driving vehicle about any mph and when stepping on the brake pedal to stop, vehicle wanders from side to side on the road. Consumer tried to keep control of vehicle and keep focused on the road.dealer and manufacturer were contacted.

I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 4x4. My mileage is at 85,020. I have taken real good care of this truck and i use it to drive in the snow when i need the 4 wheel drive. I was doing a oil change and i noticed the passinger side trailing arms and coil spring bracket welds are pulling away from the axle. I looked over to driver's side and the trailing arm welds on the front axle are cracked. I have a dana 3.5 axle ratio.the tag under the hood numbers are 3850 front axle dana 4. I purchased this truck thinking the frame and axles would last the life time of the truck. I'am a navy veteran and a mechanic and i can repair mechanical equipment. I feel that this should not of happen and i would like dodge to help out in this matter. I also what to make other dodge people awear of this problem. I'm just glad that i noticed this before winter and i was notdriving at the time. If the welds would have separated from the axle and trailing arms it could of beem fatal.
Vehicle experienced excessive clunking and looseness noise in front end of vehicle due to excessively worn front end components.
Vehicle continuously out of alignment.excessive wear to front tires that causes vehicle to drift to the right with steering wheel held straight.

The dash on my 1996 dodge began to crack after multiple months the dash began to collapse in on itself.it has the potential to cause serious electrical failure due to sharp pieces cutting wires and vacuum hoses when they fall in. When applying the turn signal, the signal does not illuminate or is erratic or does alternate of what is chosen.

Paint started peeling off in 2000, and by 2003..it was peeling off in chunks weekly.now in 2004, there is hardly any paint on the hood or the top of the cab with other peeling on the other parts as well.the rockwall, tx dodge dealership's rep said he would take care of the defective paint job, and we'd pay $700 toward the paint job.after that estimate, we held off getting it painted because of moving to mississippi, so i went to the howard wilson dodge dealer in flowood, ms.that dealership's rep would not do anything-0.this is not right.why would the texas crysler rep say yes, that the paint peeling off in chunks was an inferior paint job, but the mississippi crysler rep says he will do nothing.i would not need to be painting it at all, if it weren't for the defective paint job.
