There's a popping noise that is coming from the front suspension

1998dodge neon have had several wrecks and my air bags never deployed.

1998 dodge neon was forced off the roadway by a mitsubishi eclipse that turned across 19 year old female drivers lane of travel.sideswipe caused left front control arm to collapse, vehicle briefly bottomed onto pavement, leaving a short distance gouge mark.the neon then jumped onto a curb and impacted a utility pole head on at an estimated 27-35mph impact speed.this accident occurred on nellis boulevard in las vegas, nevada.the frontal impact airbags did not deploy, female driver had severe neck injuries that resulted in a stroke and permanent disability.trw claims the system performed exactly as designed.they claim their 1998 veam crash sensing algorithm ascertained that the driver would have been out of position at the time of the utility pole impact and the depowered airbag would have caused more harm than good.i am the expert witness on this case for the plaintiff against trw.this defect in the design of the sensing system is an indication of why this subject vehicle and its similar model years has an exorbitantly high number of non deployment of front airbags complaints in the nhtsa complaints database compared to its peers.i am reporting this at the behest of defense counsel, who claims that my failure to report this defect is actually a failure of me to provide a service to consumers.i would be glad to discuss this and many other cases with nhtsa personnel, as i believe this defense counsel critique actually opens up a great opportunity for me to work directly with nhtsa to provide more immediate feedback on serious defects that have been occurring in the field on some systems.i would be happy to discuss my proposal with nhtsa on how we might be able to cooperate on narrowing down frivolous claims, but setting a high priority on real issues that typically result in lawsuits but are not necessarily brought to nhtsa's attention.

I was recently in a front offset (passenger side)impact collision in my dodge neon, and the passenger air bag did not deploy. My husband was driving and i was the passenger. He had the cruise set at 70 mph when another vehicle turned in front of us. We left 102' of skid marks before the poi and travelled another 22' before the por. I contacted dc about the problem, but i have been brushed off. They have said that they did an investigation, and the rate of deceleration was not met. However, my car has been totaled out by the insurance company, and it looks like a crushed aluminum can on the front passenger side. The windshield is cracked, and i know that we were going at least 30 mph when we hit the other vehicle. The road is a highway that has recently had new blacktop laid, and is very slick. I do not even know if this matter has been investigated. The supposed investigator looked at the car on sept 19, and the letter that i received regarding that is dated sept 21. Two days doesn't seem like a long time to me for a thorough investigation into the matter. Especially when the "investigator" could not have looked at the vehicle until late afternoon on the 19th as i was at the salvage yard removing things from my vehicle because it had been totaled by the insurance adjuster for the man who turned in front of us. I am sorry to take up too much of your time. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, jamie easly.

Trunk full of water - trunk & light seals are bad - why hasn't there been a recall on this safety feature?lights have to work and mold is deadly!

Electrical systemhad malfunctioned while driving. This causedvehcle to stall out. Was able to restart vehicle for a short while before it shut down again. Managed to get vehicle to dealership, and mechanic indicated thatcomputer brain needed to be replaced. Work was done , drove vehicle for a while, and same problem reappeared . The 1998 dodge neon that i bought has been nothing but a problem.along with numerous, and i do mean numerous electrical problems, the head gasket has blown twice.and as we all know they are not cheap to replace.dodge should be made to reimburse all such problems.

Complete speedometer failure while vehicle is being driven.loss of all data regarding speed vehicle is traveling, and at times, all information from the engine temperature gauge and fuel gauge.issues with neon speedometers are widely published on the internet.i am shocked to see that there has never been a recall for such a well documented vehicle failure.

For as much as i pay per month on this vehicle, it has been nothing but constant problems.i am a single mom and cannot afford to have my only vehicle in the shop every time i turn around.it seems that most of my problems are common in the neons. No afety defect listed in the summary.

Original battery andreplacement have both failed.

This car was brought brand new and ever since i got it it has been a constant headache.i had had numerous problems with this car as well as other owners of dodge neons.i find it very odd and suspicious that these cars have not been recalled to fix their potentially deadly problems.i myself, do not intend to let this go after the thousands of dollars i have invested in this car.i will be a constant thorn in the side to chrysler if they do not get these cars off the streets where they are endangering the drivers as well as other traveling in other cars. No safety defec tlisted in summary.

Sun roof glass came of the track and will not open or close.the track was replaced three times. The sunroof would drag and make knocking noises.the vehicle also experienced a battery problem and oil leaks which had come from the cylinder head. *sc

Being that this is a new car i did not expect that the head gasket would go. Upon talking to service repair advisors at my local dealer they informed me that this has been common for the neons. They have seen defective gaskets, but the chrysler corp. Has not yet notified or sent out a recall notice for this. My car also experienced several elecrtical anomolies as i was told. The check engine light came on repeatedly and no codes were found that signified a problem so the service man just kept reseting the light. This of course was not acceptable for me, so i had them replace the sending unit to the light(computer control unit). Unfortunetly the problem persists(4 attempts at repairs have been made). I have found no resolve for my problem, thus i contact you. Hoping for any advice or help this may provide.

Consumer was approx. 60mph in the slow lane when a 18 wheeler crossed over the line and side swiped vehicle.consumer was not able to give warning todriver due to the horn would not operating properly.

My neon has been repaired for spark plugs, engine misfires, check engine light triggered, brakes are very noisy but according to dealership-need no replacement, sunroof repaired twice; it fell off track and wouldn't shut in the middle of winter, recently the head gasket is leaking; windows leak air, oxygen sensor needed repair, warranty has paid for itself plus more.....i am waiting for the next problem.

In the nearly 3 years i have owned my neon,it has been serviced for the same problems a total of 8 times and still there is no recall informaition available for these issues. No safety defect discussed within summary.

My daughter was driving the car, when it became stuck in the snow. She was not rocking the car, only sitting in it waiting for someone to come with a shovel, and noticed flames shooting out from under the hood. She got out of the car, and went and called for help. The car was totally consumed in flames in a matter of minutes, and was a total loss. I feel there was a problem with the engine. I have found a couple of sites on the web that mention recalls due to engine overheating, but we were never contacted to bring the car in for service.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

While driving there was a noise, then the dashboard lights went out. When the lights went out, the dashboard components became inoperative. The dashboard lights came back on within 15-30 seconds, but all the warning lights stayed illuminated for a few seconds before going off. This failure was caused by an electrical system failure, butdealership nor manufacturer were very helpful.

Head gasket blew at 60,000 miles.fortunately, my cousin is a claims adjuster for an extended warranty group.i was told to go to chrysler and remind them of the others that they have reimbursed for these damages and it worked.chrysler paid for the repairs, all though it was not easy.i got the run around and an ear full of lies.but, in the end they paid.don't take no for an answer.they have to fix it.

Blown head gasket due to design flaw. *ph

I am in the process of compiling all information on the repairs we have done on the neon.i have decided to wait until i have all the facts, from the first time we had the air conditioning repaired to the recent $900+ repair of the computer and the two-week-old problem with the sheets of peeling paint.the unbelievable paint peeling is inexcusable and was also the last straw.i will be filing a lengthy complaint shortly

While having a routine oil change, mechanic noticed an oil leak due to a defective oil gasket. *la the service tech suggested the problem could have been the oil pressure switch.a week later the cooling system was flushed and the service tech found that the head gasket was no good. *sc

At only 19000 miles the car has blown the head gasket, the front drivers side tire split down the side in several places, both drive belts broke causing dead cells in the battery, now temp gauge goes to red when in traffic with a/c working.dealer replaced head gasket and belts but cant find the overheating problem. What a piece of junk!!!!

The oil light would come on and oil would leak out of the vehicle.after trying to start the vehicle the engine does not connect at first, has to try at least two times before it will start.dealer stated it could be either the starter or the engine.

Noticed oil leaking from under vehicle while traveling at highway speed, vehicle overheated.

While driving to work one morning i checked my temperature gauge and realized my temp was extremely hot.then there was a cloud of smoke rolling from under my hood.being 50 miles from home and knowing this area too well i was very happy to see a county sheriff pull up behind me and offer me a ride to work.my car stayed on the side of the highway for 12 hours until i could get some one trust to come and tow it the 50 miles back home.the car sat for a while until i could save the money to bet it repaired.it was not easy to continue to pay a monthly loan payment on a car that was not drivable.finally when we got the money i called a local and cheap mechanic to see what the problem was.a blown head gasket that in return caused oil to contaminate the radiator. It was only after speaking to my cousin who is a claims adjustor for a national extended warranty co. Did i realized that i could get "assistance" through chrysler to fix my car.i had to fight tooth and nail to get them to agree that this was an ongoing problem with this car.finally eight months later my car is in the dealership getting repaired at only 50% of the cost at my expense.if you have this problem, contact the chrysler corporation office in michigan and tell them you want a district rep to come to your dealership and determine how much "assistance" they will provide you.do not take no for an answer.they will pay for partial repairs. *nlm

Oil leaking in driveway, took for inspection immediately (same day it was noticed on a new driveway).inspector notes head gasket leak this motor should be on a recall list with as many as they have seen on this model.scc****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****770859****

Vehicle was leaking oil. Took vehicle todealer, anddealer determined that valve seals were leaking.consumer feltengine could overheat and catch on fire.

I repaired the water leak by caulking the trunk, i am aware this is a manufacturing defect.

Car began to over heat on major interstate highway. When it was realized that problem was critical car was pulled to side of the highway and dodge roadside assistance was called. Car was towed to nichols dodge in burlington, nc where it sits and we are awaiting determination of damage and warranty coverage.

Car overheated eventhough there were plenty of coolant.thick smoke coming out of the hood so i shut off the engine and cruised to a stop.i did not want the engine to catch fire.mechanic said that it was a blown head gasket and that it was a common problem with the neon.why was there not a recall.does someone have to get injured before there is one.i called chrysler and they nicely said that my warranty had expired.if this was defective to start with, the warranty should cover the cost of repairs.thank you for listening. This car has gone dead twice in the last year and a half while driving.

Vehicle was taken to the dealership for an oil change andmechanic found that cylinder head gasket was leaking oil, and must be replaced.

The contact owns a 1998 dodge neon. The speedometer isnt operating normally and doesn't display the speed; however, if you tap on the dashboard it began operating normally. The noise from the heating system is also a distraction and a safety risk. The current mileage was 137,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

The 1998 dodge neon is notorious for faulty head gaskets. The problem is first noticed by an oil leak and the vehicle overheating. The head gaskets are expensive to replace. After the car gets hot, it stalls at every intersection and every time the vehicle starts to slow down or is placed in neutral (manual transmission). My car stalled in the middle of a busy intersection where traffic was getting on and off of the freeway and would not start again. I had to get out of my car and push it to the side of the freeway entrance because it was the only available place to move my car to. It was fortunate that this incident did not cause an accident or result in me getting injured. Chrysler is well aware of the problem and has issued an improved gasket replacement kit, (which is costly) but refuses to take responsibility for the problem by issuing a recall. My car needs new head gaskets and i have been quoted $900 for parts and labor. I don't have that much money, so now my car sits parked in the street and i now have to take the city bus, which closest stop to my house is 1.5 miles, or walk places with my 3 children in 100 degree weather. I don't know what i will do when winter comes. Chrysler needs to be forced to issue a recall for this problem. There are hundreds of complaints for the exact same issue on website such as mycarstats.com and many forums. Most of the blown head gaskets happened on low mileage vehicles. My car only has 89,000 miles on it. If you do a google search for 1998 dodge neon blown head gaskets, you will get over 80,000 listing of forums, discussions and articles relating to the same problem.

My car overheated so i took it to a repair shop.they said i had a blown head gasket and should not drive it any further because if it gets empty it could blow my engine also could get so hot and cause a fire.

For as much as i pay per month on this vehicle, it has been nothing but constant problems.i am a single mom and cannot afford to have my only vehicle in the shop every time i turn around.it seems that most of my problems are common in the neons. No afety defect listed in the summary.

I have contacted chrysler on 8/22/2002 and reported the problem they will not pay for the repairs.this is an ongoing problem.it may not be a vehicle safety issue but it could leave a motorist stranded.they have redesigned the headgasket but will not recall this product defect despite the numerous complaints by consumers.please investigate.

I bought this car on 3/15, on 4/11 i had to go back with a major oil leak, dealer replaced oil pressure switch, went back 4/18 still leaking, put in a tracing dye, went back on 4/25 was told it would need a head and valve cover gasket to stop leaking, cam sensor mentioned but not repaired.head gasket replaced on 5/3, by 5/6 almost all oil lost mixed w/coolant and foreign material.dealer now says it has a cracked head. This is ridiculous, there should be an entirely new engine because we all know it won't stop here!!!this has to be stopped, i have checked other websites and not found any recalls by dodge for this problem, your website has shown me that this is happening far too frequently.

Head gaskets blewout while driving. Had noticedleaking of fluid.took vehicle to 3 different mechanics. One did not know cause.the other indicated that head gaskets needed to be replaced.

Head gasket failure is defenitely a manufacturing flaw based on the references that i have learned of.there should be a recall on this car for this defect!

After driving my neon for about a year, i am finding the same problems as other owners are having. Item number one, the sun roof has just been repaired. The last item is the most important. The head gasket problem has arrived. From what i am learning, chrysler is and has been receiving a number of complaints on this problem for some time. The cost in the repair is something that chrysler does not want to bear. Instead will continue to pass it on to it's customers. I own two otherchrysler products that are much newer and they too are troublesome.

The head gasket seal and the right rear oil seal leaked.the mechanic stated that this has been a problem in many dodge neons.*mr *scc *nlm

Head cylinder gasket failure leaving only one quart of oil in engine ,oil light did not come onto warn us of low oil.

I called a local dealer and they told me that the recall for the 1998 dodge neon sohc for the head gasket was no longer honored by dodge, i have since found this to be false.i just want this taken care of and feel they should fix it for free.there is a rumor that chrysler has a 5 year/ 100,000 mile warranty out for this problem in particular. Thanks, clyde and myhia hubble

Needs new head gasket at 62,000 miles. Paint is fogging up on the back for no reason. This is ridiculous and i see that there are many others complaining os similiar nature. The problem with the steering column going out is a major problem. That needs to be dealt with immediately along with the head gasket. This is a seriously issue and needs to be dealt with immediately.

Airconditioner compressor, engine piston head was dameged due to heat, catalytic converter replaced, and the first head gasket replaced all at 18500 miles.recently replaced a third one at 44500 miles.that makes four in a year and a half!ecently replaced miles

I do not know when the head gasket started leaking. I only found out about it 2/01. It turns out almost all owners of 95-98 neon's have had head gasket problems and chrysler has a case by case method of helping which is not fair. Head gaskest should last the life of the car. I contacted them three times about this and have been turned down each time.

When driving at any speed and going up hills, the consumer has to put the foot on the gas pedal hard to get some speed. On wet pavement the vehicle really doesn't have power. The vehicle will downshift, and when driving it will do light shifting. Vehicle is in the shop, and the dealer said the vehicle passed all the fuel tests, but the problemstill occurs. The dealer did some work on the oil pan.

Consumer purchsased vehicle with 12,000 miles on it.transmission fluid was leaking. Took vehicle to dealer & had seals tightened. 1-2 days later, engine checklight came on & the car shut off while making a left turn. Vehicle had to be towedon 10-18-99 because consumer was scared to drive it.consumerfound out head gaskets were cracked. Consumer has other problems with the vehicle & dealerwas not acknowledgingthe defects. Will contact the lemon law.

After numerous oil changes, engine check light suddenly started flashing while on expressway and car lurched, then shut down completely.at dealership i was informed that engine threw a rod through the oil pan.i'm convinced this is related to the numerous complaints of the head gasket in the engine, since they all seem to have oil leaks in common.

At only 19000 miles the car has blown the head gasket, the front drivers side tire split down the side in several places, both drive belts broke causing dead cells in the battery, now temp gauge goes to red when in traffic with a/c working.dealer replaced head gasket and belts but cant find the overheating problem. Head gasket blew at 44,000 miles.no extended warrenty. $950.00 to fix

This car has been driven under normal condtions for approximately 18000 miles.i just don't see the head gasket becoming damaged after this amount of driving.

Head gasket failure @ 65000 miles thats bogus.

Head gasket failure is defenitely a manufacturing flaw based on the references that i have learned of.there should be a recall on this car for this defect!

Engine head gasket failed, this is a common enough problem with the engines used in these cars that chrysler has issued serveral tsbs on it. None of the failures to my knowledge have to date caused anything worse than overheating due to oil/coolant loss, but could potentially cause more serious damage if left unrepaired for any length of time.

While driving the head gasket blew and caused oil to leak. The dealer was notified.*nlm

Blown head gasket.

On 6/14/1999 i took my car to the dealer for warranty work.(35,784 miles) busted front motor mount,, rattling when changing gears, water in tail pipe when it rained and high rpm, even when idling. They told me there was nothing wrong with the motor mount, the high rpm was normal, they could find no rattle and no problem with exhaust pipe. I demanded a refusal in writing on the motor mount. They asked to keep the car another day and recheck the motor mount and it was now raining, they'd recheck the exhaust pipe noise. They said they replaced the motor mount, but i could find no evidence that they had actually replaced it. Being female, we are regarded as mechanically ignorant and mechanics will not listen to us in ms. Having our own repair shop for many years, i probably fixed more engines in my teenage years than they do in their career. I had no experience with these new fuel injected vehicles. They refused to listen and i couldn't win against a so-called specialist. After a few months, i found the rattle in reverse. It was a bolt above the drive shaft that was unscrewing itself and banging against the drive shaft. I tightened several times over the next few months and then my friend put silicon on it and it has never unscrewed itself since. The water in the tail pipe is an exhaust manifold leak at the motor and possibly a busted head gasket. The excessive heat has caused my rear main seal to start leaking and i am now getting oil in 2 of my spark plug and it has burnt a valve in my engine. It now has 108000 miles. Paid off in 2 years. This was my first car. Dealer said i couldn't get extended warraty cause my credit wasn't good enough. I paid full price, 13000 and it already had 127 miles on it. They said they lied to chrysler about my income to get me financed and no problem i've had was fixed. I'm single mom, live in country. I'mdisabled since 2/2000. The dealertook advantage of me, now my car needs 1000's in repairs caused by original complaint. I can't fix.

Vehicle is leaking oil fromhead gaskets.

Our problem is with the neons headgasket leaking.as many neon are owned why doesn't dodge do something about these cars leaking.i run a garage and we have done about 25 head gasket jobs on these cars.this is crazy!these cars have low mileage for a car but are out of warranty.i know that dodge redesigned these gaskets.but why don't they recall them.it is crazy to have a car with less than 40,000 miles on it & have to replace the head gasket.these same cars are the same as the talons, eclispes, and other with the same engine problems just different names.problem with the lifters also.dodge has remade lifters because so many problems with the old design.take a car with less than 50,000 on it & it needs a valves replaced.old valves will not close properly.just went through this with a talon.got valves from 2 different dealers1 set new style other set old style. They do not interchange if using new style have to change the crank and the cam shaft so they can work together.this needs to be checked into.guess dodge is trying to keep this quiet.thank god for 1 honest parts man. It seems all 2.0 suffer from this. Then the consumer or in our case the garage has to fork out 1000.00 of $$$$$to fixproblem that is dodges problem.

Upon investigation of an oil leak under the hood of my 1998 dodge neon i was informed that the problem was a defective head gasket and sending unit.when i called the local dodge dealership, marietta dodge, inc., 701 cobb parkway south, marietta, ga30062, (770-424-6601) i was told that this was a common problem and since my auto was not over 80,000 miles the part would be replaced.however, when i arrived for service i was told that the 36,000 mile warrantee was expired so the part could not be replaced free of charge.i feel that the part is a manufacture defect and should be covered regardless of the 36,000 mile warrantee, especially since it did not show up until that particular warrantee was already expired.i see that this problem has been addressed in service bulletin # 090899 and 090997.i feel there should be a recall on these parts since the failure of such cuts down on compression and gas milage making the neon an undesirable automobile.i was informed by the technician that found the source of the leak that his company sees two to three automobiles with this same problem per week.he is the one that advised me to check on a recall since it seems to be a common problem.i have also experienced problems with defective seals that were replaced free of charge after my rear floorboard was getting soaked everytime there was a heavy rain.air conditioner odor which was addressed and treated but not depleated (service bulletin #241197).i also am experiencing brake squeal and groans (service bulletin #051097).i would like to know what my recourse is?where do i go, what do i say, how do i get these problems taken care of before i run out of time?

Head gastket is blown, needs to be replaced. Mechanic said "there's oil and coolant everywhere". This car has only 39,000 miles! i've contacted 7 repair shops, average cost to fix is $700. Three mechanics told me that this problem is so common, they can't believe there hasn't been a recall yet. One mechanic said that he does these at least once a week. After much research on the internet, i have found that this is a very common problem--i alone have found nearly 100 reports of the same thing happening.as for the sunroof...it broke and was repaired in august 2000. Now, just over a year later (no more warranty) the same problem has happened again. There have been tsb's issued on both of these problems. A recall is needed immediately.

Brought car in for repair of severe oil leak at engine rear.dodge dealer advises that it was a leaking head gasket (blown head gasket) on 1998 neon with approximately 46,463 miles on the odometer.could not reach chrysler customer service at 1-800-922-1997 (stays busy); dealer refused to warrant work even though cause of problem was apparently a design/latent defect in the aluminum head.vehicle purchased new 5/21/98.internet reveals numerous other people have had similar problems.fortunately, the car didn't break down and cause injuries, fataliites or property damage.a manufacturer and dealers should stand by their products.it cost me $636.94 to "repair" something that the dealer would not warrant because of apparent design/latent defect (damage allegedly required purchase and installation of new cylinder head to properly repair (at my expense) and i told them "no way"; its their problem, not mine).

My car had leaked oil, very littlefor awhile, i had planned to put in the shop after i received my tax return check.well i couldn't wait, for the small leak had turned into a huge leak.it is at the shop right now, and i had been told that it is the head gasket.i have heard of all to the familiar cases like this.something needs to be done.why isn't there a recall on such a problem?

A technical service bulletin was issued on 9/08/1998 on the head gasket. I was not notified by the dealer or the dodge. I have purchased new chrysler vehicles before (1993 plymouth voyager). The outcome of this problem will determine, if i purchase another chrysler product again.

Whenever puttingoil in to gas tankit will leak right to the ground. Mechanic told consumer thathead gasket was shot, and needed to be replaced. There is a service bulletinon problem.

Original motor was replaced at 22,000 miles because a bearing spun and ruined the block.then again, this time, the same thing in the same cylinder(#2 or #3, i forget) happened again.engein oil is checked every 3 days, and oil is changed every 3500 miles.

The dealer is trying to blame excessive carbon buildup in an eight month old engine on poor gas. Their proposed a fix is running engine cleaner through the combustion system. It hardly seems practical to assume that the combustion system will have to be cleaned every 12,000 miles on a modern automobile running on gasoline from national companies such as amoco and shell. The dealer claims that this is a common problem with all cars nowadays.

I know 2 other people with neons and they have had this problem also. I was told this would cost me 550.00 to fix. My wife bought her 1998 dodge neon in august of 2000.we recently passed 60,000 miles on the car and it began to leak oil.the leak was gradual at first and i assumed that the oil pan bolt had been put in incorrectly by the servicemen at the lube shop.however, on further review, the car was found to have a head gasket leak (approx. An $800 repair).further research has led me to find that this problem is common to all dodge vehicles using this engine.the dealer, in conjunction with dodge, has offered to cover the repair, minus a $250 deductible and a $105 fee for a coolant flush/oil change that they say is necessary when dealing with a head gasket repair.so, in review, dodge's product is faulty and they know it.nevertheless they will not assume full responsibility for a flawed design that they conceived.this practice of selling a product with known flaws, and subsequently refusing to assume responsibility is, at best, dishonest.

Head gasket blew at 44,000, two exhuast valves not seated. No extended warranty.

Intermittently vehicle stalledwhile driving.vehicle was taken to the dealer, and they determined that the intake manifold was cracked and caused coolant to leak inside the engine. Consumer indicated three years ago they replaced the intake manifold at consumer's expense of $3,000. Currently, problem recurred, and will cost consumer about $5,000.

Consumer states his auto has been leaking oil for months.he finally took it to the dealership and was told that he had a bad head gasket. He thinks that this is a bad motor, because it only has 24,000 miles on it. Ts

We have purchased a 1998 dodge neon for our son who is in college.the car only has 24,000 miles on it currently.the head gasket is gone and oil is leaking everywhere.the repair for this will be between $700 and $800.i have made contact to chrysler who stated that because the 36,000/3 year warranty was up they would not do anything about.i asked them if that was the best that their engines could do (head gasket going at 24,000 miles).from what i have read and been told by a dealership, chrylser knew they had a problem in 1998 with head gaskets and rectified it during the same year but never recalled the cars there were manufactured early in the production.i have seen so many complaints with the head gasket on this particular model so i don't understand what it takes to get a recall on this part.

Onthe morning of 06/27/00,while driving to work. As iaccelerated to 70 from 65, the donut on the exhaust manifold (flange gasket) gave out.the car began to sound like a lawnmower.i toke it to midas. They told me to check with dodge for federal repairs for exhaust. Dodge said no, it wasn't covered, only catylitic converters and brain of elect. I didn't beleive the rep. Replaced blown head gasket.... New gasket was of superior quality and design than original.the manufacturer obviously redesigned it due to a faulty original design.

Consumer had the air conditioner repaired for blowing hot air six months after purchasing the vehicle. Two years later, the same problem occurred.dealer repaired the vehicle at halfprice to the owner.vehicle is in the shop again for the same problem.manufacturer was notified by the consumer.

Consumer noticed that passenger's airbagwas trying tocome out of cover due to warping, the airbag came out of position.gear shift can be move out of park without the key in the ignition due to failure of the interlock system.head gasket failure resulted in oil leakage. Problems with the interior lighting system due to missing door ajar switch bumper.all speakers need replacing due to noise distortion. These problems appear to be intimate with the neon '95 through '98. No safety defec tmentioned.

Trunk full of water - trunk & light seals are bad - why hasn't there been a recall on this safety feature?lights have to work and mold is deadly!

When calling pro-a motors at 323-838-2988,about certain pro-a motors corner lamps, turn signals, and headlights sold as replacement lamps, for my 1998 dodge neoni was put on hold for a lengthy amount of time before being answered to a horrible personal. In attempts to see if it was the actual lamp or the outside reflector that was damaged i was given about 5 seconds into my description before being told that no it is not there problem that i did not have their lamp in my car. Amazing how there is such a quick answer to my description of 5 seconds. Maybe there are a lot of recalls from their company but i was not even allowed to see if my part was part of that recall before being hung up on.

Both headlights are losing visability. They are clouded up. Either wrong or cheap grade plastics used for optical use. I have seen every 99 and before dodge neon with the same problem. Very unsafe when you lose visibilty at night.dt

Let window down as a result moisture got into the car from rain . Also, headlights didnot work properly.

The headlight lens on the neon are made of plastic that has degraded to a point that the headlights are ineffective. On top of that, there is not a replacement lens available. You have to buy an entire $110.00 assembly.

Water is backing up in tail light, and getting water on floor inside of vehicle, andalso in trunk. Dealer will seal area around tail light.

The pipe that comes down from the filler into the tank rusted. This caused fuel to leak very heavily at times.fuel pump has had to be replaced twice already. The local junkyard imformed the consumer that the filler pipe is a common problem, they sell them as fast as they get them.

The contact owns a 1998 dodge neon. The contact stated that while parked, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the technician stated that the fuel pump would have to be replaced. The fuel pump was replaced three different times. The failure continued after the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. The vin was not available.

I purchased this dodge neon used with 23,000 miles.i have had nothing but problems with it since the very beginning.first the fuel pump went out. We had continuous problems with oil leaking and overheating.the air-conditioning has started to work only occassionally.the seals on the windows are very poor and it always sounds like the window needs to be rolled up.the trunk didn't have any seal to protect against the rain and my interior was flooded several times during the winter, over a couple of years until we were able to figure out where the problem was.i actually had to remove the back seat and all interior carpet for the rainy season. Now the water pump and my head gasket have given out. I had heard about the head gasket problems on my many service visits, but always held out hope until now that is. These repairs will cost me well over $1,000. And the car is barely 4 years old. Very big mistake i made purchasing the dodge neon, not only is it always in need of repair, but they have the absolute worse dealer customer relations and service department that i have ever dealt with.i stopped going to dodge for service after my first couple of encounters with them.

The first time would have been headed up 23 n the car hesitated on the hill, later that day, being the next day after i bought the car, it stopped going up a slight incline on high street in worthington oh in lunch hour traffic, i was in the far lane and could feel there was no pressure on the gas pedal, the next was 2 days later going up kenney rd, i was half way when i could feel no pressure in the gas pedal, i managed to get off the road and turn the corner when the car stopped, the final time i was on my way to work in morning rush when it started to act up, again there was no pressure in the gas pedal, i was moving at a rate that i could pull off the road, each time even though i was on level ground the car would not start again, the first time the dealer said i was out of gas, the second time he said i was out of gas and didn't bother to have it repaired only after the third conflict with him and this car was it fixed, i also think this car may have been wrecked, it was under warranty but was on the sales lot with all these prob and the driver door leaks air quite a bit, if ther is a way that could be checked out i would be happy to do it if i had the information.

While driving 35mph consumer's vehicle t-boned another vehicle and seat belt did not work. Passenger was injured. Please add vin.

The owner hit another vehicle braking from about 50mph, and neither driver's side nor passenger's side airbags deployed. Also the passenger's sideseatbelt broke at the buckle. Dlr has not seen.

The driver's seat belt locks without reason. This has caused several near accidents when trying to change lanes or merging onto the interstate. The driver has to lean forward to view past the blind spots, but the seat belt lockes if the vehicle is on a curve with/without the brakes being activated. Also when braking for a light or other reason, at normal speed, the seat belt locked which caused neck burns, rubs, etc on the driver. (basically, if the driver moves in any way, the seat belt locks).

Rear ened another car at 25 m.p.h and the driver and passenger side air bags did not deploy. Also the driverside seat belt did not lock thus causing me to hit the steering wheel and a trip to the emergency room!

While driving at approximately 30 mph vehicle was involved in a head-on collision. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy, and shoulder seatbeltdid not lock, causing driver to be thrown forward ,hitting steering wheel and windshield. Driver sustained head and neck injuries.

While i was getting my oil changed and tires rotated, the mechanic told me that my rear drum brakes did not function properly. The mechanic at precision tune in encinitas, ca, mentioned that he would need to replace the drum brake components. Because brake fluid leaked and rusted the insides of the the brakes, he also did mention that my right rear tire did not spin as it was suppouse to spin due to damage in the drum brake. While showing me the insides of my brakes, he mentioned that my car was also leaking brake fluid. Since my drum brakes do not function properly, the drum brakes distort my front disc brakes from making my car stop normally. Therefore not only putting my life in danger, but also putting my families and friends lifes in danger.

While checking the oil noticed powe brake booster hose rubbing under engine hood. Please provide furhter information.

Wow! just want you to know steering wheel on neons is locking mid-turn (3 i know of) i have traded mine in, but it has happened 3x in a month to friend who will be contacting you and to aquaintence, as well. Dealer says "nothing is wrong"as it does not lock when they drive it. (the steering unlocks as mysteriously as it locks)

On 08/08/00, as i was making a right turn, the steering wheel "locked" and i was unable to successfully complete the turn. I hit the brakes hard to stop my car from hitting another vehicle. I had to yank the wheel hard to get it to turn the wheels. Left my car w/ dealer who informed me that the reason why the steering whel locked was because i had just gone thru a puddle and it wet the belt causing it to lose "traction".if this is the case, then this will happen again and not when i go thru a puddle. Maybe in the rain. If i "need" it to swerve away from danger, i may find myself a "sitting duck".is there some way to cover this area so water will not make the steering belt lose traction?

I no longer have my car, as of august 16, 2000 i returned it to the bank.the warranty has long since expired and the cost to maintain the car with all of the problems it has proved to be more than i could afford, and much more than the car was worth.my main objective here is to make sure the problems i had are known so that maybe it will prevent someone from being seriously hurt or killed.granted some of the problems such as leaks around the doors and trunk are not as serious, others such as the steering knuckle wearing out and having to be replaced, which needed to be replaced again when i returned my car last week , transmission problems, and throttle body problems that cause the car to stall, which could lead to an accident.i realize that i will never get any of the moneyback i have spent on the car, but if this keeps even one person from getting hurt or killed it will be more than worthwhile.chrysler has done nothing but give me the run around, i went through arbitration, and retained a lawyer for the lemon law, but the dealerships failure to document each time my car was in for repairs, made it my word against theirs, so there was nothing i could do legally to make them pay.i know of 4 other individuals who have had several of the same problems i have had.i can provide you with a copy of all my service records i have, if it will help you.please check into this before someone is seriously hurt in these cars.they are a death trap.

For as much as i pay per month on this vehicle, it has been nothing but constant problems.i am a single mom and cannot afford to have my only vehicle in the shop every time i turn around.it seems that most of my problems are common in the neons. No afety defect listed in the summary.

Water leaks around rear light assembly through gaping holes underneath trunk lid. Water has been collecting there for quite some time and collects in the spare tire well and in the back seat passenger floorboards. The rug in the back is soaked after it rains overnight. It appears that th water collects in the rear light well. And somehow trickles down. Must of had gallons in there before i knew what was going on.

Trunk full of water - trunk & light seals are bad - why hasn't there been a recall on this safety feature?lights have to work and mold is deadly!

Consumer has ahead injury due to the design of the trunk, there is nothing to hold the trunk up.

Trunk is leaking around tail lights causing serious water damage.it has leaked down the trunk into the cab, ruining the carpet, padding and foam in the rear seat.there are large gaps between the tail lights and the seal.the car has never been in an accident, which indicates that this is a manufacturing/design problem.

Whenever it rainsrear bench seat floor, drivers and passenger side ,there is a puddle of water. Consumer feels water is coming in from the trunk.please provide any further information.

Steering wheel would vibrate/shake while traveling at highway speed (65-70mph). This happens when traveling at lower speeds also. Took to dealer approximately 10-12 times for problem. They worked on it at least 8 times. Had the tires rotated. Will be going to arbitration.

While making a right turn there is a partial hang up in the steering, causing a loud popping noise in the front end. The dealer is aware of the problem.vehicle will be repaired. Owner feels that the problem should be under recall because of service bulletin. *ml

I have a 98 dodge neon. The car grinds in the front end even with new brakes. I cant not drive throw water or the car will die. Going over a speed bump at the recommended speed the front end will bottom out. I had a friend look at the car. And he said it looked fine. The brake spec. Didn't see any thing and i noticed i had two different tires on the front then the back because of thefront end. Please if you find out any thing on this car it would be much obliged.

Whenever going 50-55mph the front end of vehicle would shimmy. Has been to dealer 6 different times for alignment, but problem still exists. Mechanic had test driven vehicle but could not solve problem. Manufacturer knows of problem.

Rear passenger side spring, located above rear tire, broke and punctured tire.

Vehicle was going 30mph over slightly raised pavement crossing an intersection and rear end started fishtailing as consumer began to brake, there was a crash sound from underneath, and rear end started to go left, vehicle went over curb on opposite side of street, causing vehicle to hit a tree, wheel came offspindle and the axle broke, and the wheel on the right rear came off, chrysler was not assisting consumer possibly because insurance company had paid consumer. Representative that chrysler sent has not contacted consumer since vehicle was inspected.

Consumer hears noise coming from the rear tire (goodyear 13 inch tire).nlm

At only 19000 miles the car has blown the head gasket, the front drivers side tire split down the side in several places, both drive belts broke causing dead cells in the battery, now temp gauge goes to red when in traffic with a/c working.dealer replaced head gasket and belts but cant find the overheating problem. What a piece of junk!!!!

Goodyear, eagle ga, original equipment, 37000 miles mounted on a 1998, dodge neon. While traveling at 60 mphpassengers rear tire had tread separation, and then went flat. Tire size p185/65 r14.

Have had multiple flat tires (no nails) on the front tires only at the edge of the tread.yesterday, the right front exploded at 65 mph.the tread totally separated from both side walls at the edge of the tread (the same point that all punctures have occured).it rolled over and stayed under the rim which made stopping extremely difficult.a slight touch of the break caused the car to turn sideways.took 150 yards to stop.caused minor damage to the rim and inner panel.i have raced cars off and on for years and almost lost this one.it would appear that the tires are not adequately re-enforced at the joint of the sidewall and tread.all flats and failures on the drive wheels.the tires were just rotated and the tire that failed came from the back and never had a flat.also, the r/t has racing suspension and will let you know if a tire is low.it has a very noticeable pull.there was no indication other than 2 seconds of what sounded like a major exhaust leak.no vibration, no pull, just noise.then a large bang.i have talked to two other people that have chrysler front wheel driver cars and both have replaced their tires due to numerous flats.am going out on the web to see if others are having the same problem.( dot number: unknown tire size: p185/65r14 )

I own a 1998 dodge neon with 89,700 miles on it.i took it to valley smog and repair in van nuys, ca.i took it there to get my 90,000 mile work done on it.as they were pulling it into the garage they noticed a substantial oil leak.when they put the car on the rack, they saw oil all over the bottom of the car.i was called and told that my head gasket was cracked and needed to be replaced as driving on it any more would cause the engine to expire.i told them to proceed with the work, which ended up costing me just over $1100.i did some research on the web and discovered that many people have had this problem.with further research i found out that chrysler had secretlyextended the warranty on this part to 5 years/100,000 miles and would reimburse the owner of the car if any work was done to fix this problem.i called the 800 number and was told that because of the age of my car and the fact that the work was done at a non dodge garage, i would not be reimbured my $1100.as i already explained, my car was not 5 years old yet and had not reached 100,000 miles.the man that i spoke with, a guy named mike, made it seem like i should have driven my car, leaking oil, to dodge to pay double the money and still not have any recourse for the situation.i'd like to know if you can help me in finding out any additional information about this secret warranty and also i'd like some help in getting my money back. Thank you.

Oil light remains illuminated due to oil leakage fromhead gaskets. Please give any further details.

Oil light flickered and consumer noticed that vehicle was down 3 quarts of oil.took to dealer, and they said it was a head gasket. Dealer replaced head gasket.in january it was still leaking insame spot.

Vehicle has experienced various problems with the engine.while vehicle was in motion t engine light illuminated.head gasketsblew which caused oil leakage onto the engine block. Dealer5 has replaced the engine gaskets , the sensor andengine filter.

For as much as i pay per month on this vehicle, it has been nothing but constant problems.i am a single mom and cannot afford to have my only vehicle in the shop every time i turn around.it seems that most of my problems are common in the neons. No afety defect listed in the summary.

Have been in for service engine check light , because of multiplicity ofmisfires , 4 times in 10 months.presently trying to get service copies because i dont have the first two services for my records.i wonder if i will actually receive them? on the third visit the service manager informed my that chrysler was coming out with a fix for the problem. Have not talked to other service departments for comformation of this , norhave i asked chrysler . I really need help in this matter. I really do want a refund for this dodge neon sport coupe w/dohc motor.

There is an oil leak at the head gaskets, causing the head gasket to blow out.consumer has contacteed the dealer, dealer statedenginehead gasket needed replacing. Please provide any further details.

Have had to take car in so many times for the same problems that were not being fixed in the first place. They would tell me to drive it for a time and see if the noise would stop. Or they would just say there is nothing wrong with it. Now that the warranty is up i have to foot the bill i will never buy a chrysler vehicle in my life!!!. No safety defect mentioned in summary.

This is not a safety concern but a manufacture defect.it is peeling all over.dt

After numerous oil changes, engine check light suddenly started flashing while on expressway and car lurched, then shut down completely.at dealership i was informed that engine threw a rod through the oil pan.i'm convinced this is related to the numerous complaints of the head gasket in the engine, since they all seem to have oil leaks in common.

I purchased this car exactly 1 week before my "engine check light came on, so i am not familiar with any previous problems that may apply to this car.

Vehicle would hesitate for awhile before it would suddenly accelerate on its own. Sometimes would surge forward when gas pedal pressed lightly. Have taken to dealership numerous times to have problem repaired. Problem been happening for over 2 1/2 years.

Vehicle experiencing sudden acceleration, dealer can not locate problem.

While driving 50-55mphsteering wheel locked, causingdriver to lose control, resulting in a collision withminor injuries. The vehicle accelerates suddenlyand the brakes locked.the vehicle couldnot be repaired after accident due to inferior structure and body.this vehicle was sold by deceptive tactics and to cover up prior accident, the dealer refused to reveal service records.

Throttle body failed, having trouble getting part in order to correct engine surging and stalling.

Was taking off whenthrottlewould suddenly accelerated.throttle would be wide open. Took vehicle to dealership, and was informed bymechanic that problem could not be duplicated.the sudden acceleration occured twice and the vehicle was unsafe to drive.

While driving accelerator gets stuck and will not release.to stop the vehicle consumerhas to shut the key off while the vehicle is moving. Dealer has been contacted. *ml

While applying the accelerator pedal vehicle failed to accelerate. Consumer applied the accelerator pedal numerous times and the vehicle accelerated. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced.

Vehicle suddenly accelerated while in traffic, there was no collision to report.consumer was able to turn the car off,and coast over to theshoulder.mechanic atdealership told her to unplug the cruise control.

While driving gas pedal sticks due tothrottle cable cord chafing which caused acclerator not to move unlessdriver slammed on the gas pedal.please provide further information.
