Want to know why airbags did not deploy

I see where the air bag impact sensor is on the recall list you have provided, but i reported it also.my number one complaint is the way my vehicle and several other vehicles the same color as mine is peeling.my vehicle color is lapis blue and the paint is peeling all over. I've took it to three dodge dealers, and no one wants to take the responsibility for the paint peeling. When the vehicle first started peeling about a year after i had it, i took it to archer dodge in houston, tx. And i was sold some lapis blue touch-up paint by one of the service agents, and from that point my vehicle continued to peel , andto this date the paint peeling is unbelieveable.i was told that it's peeling due to the manufacturer's error.like i said there are several lapis blue dodge neons that are peeling, and i do have at least ten other license plates numbers to the other lapis blue neons that are peeling. Here it is i'm paying a car note for a vehicle that looks horrible and it takes away from the value of the vehicle.this isn't fair to the consumers, being that this paint peeling is due to error of the manufacturer.the peeling of the paint has nothing to do with the mileage neither, as some are trying to connect together. I've seen older model vehicles that still have their original paint job , and there's no peeling at all.the paint peeling will speak for itself.i also was told at one of the dealer's i took my vehicle to that they could get the vehicle painted, but that i would have to pay half the cost, and there's no way myself consumers have to pay for something that's not directly our faults. This is a problem that the chrysler corporation should have addressed two years ago. Consumers should have to pay anything for something that we had no control over or r

Have also had transmission, electrical failure, and brake failure at low mileage, very unhappy.

I bought this neon in august of 1998, it has been nothing but problems since purchase.i have had to have the electrical system worked on twice.when you go over 60mph the steering wheel rattles.the speakers for the radio work sometimes.the overhead light comes on while driving.when it rains the front floor boards get soaked with water. Last month the i needed to replace the headgasket, and after several calls the the manufacturer they paid half, but the next day the engine started to knock severly.

Dashboard lights and gauges started to act funny and then it started to smoke.i got out of the car and it caught on fire and is a total lost.

While parked, transmission fluid leaked out of vehicle. Dealer found transmission lines loose. Vehicle shifting by itself due to a sticky cable. Oil leak in engine.dealer found headgasket failure.on several occasions engine runs rough.camshaft replaced. Vehicle shakes and trembles while braking. Weatherstripping fell off on drivers side door.antifreeze leaking.dealer replaced water pump.battery clamp loose causing battery light to stay on.

My car had exactly 12000 miles on it when purchased.at around mile 43000, the car began to leak oil.i then took it to a mechanic who told me that it was the valve cover gasket.the repair was to cost me $800 until he also informed me that the problem was reoccuring in dodge neons and should have been recalled.the dodge dealership took care of it.then, around mile 70000, the car began to overheat tremendously, going dead every time the gas pedal was released, the electrical system began to go haywire, the battery had to be replaced, and as well as the thermostat.i am a college student and for this to be my dependable mode of transportation, it is truly a joke.the dodge corporation should do something about this.thank you!

Vehicle just shut off while stopping at a stop sign, and would not restart. Also, battery light and seat belt light came on.consumer had vehicle towed to dealer.

My sister in tn has a neon the dealer fixed her head gasket these cars i have been told by one auto repair that he fixes these head gaskets at least one every other week dodge should have done a recall or at least fix the problem i can not get any one on the phone at chrysler and i live here. They should pay the cost they know that its a problem. The up and down stream sensors went bad it cost me $300. To fix. I know a gentleman that had the same problem his went bad twice and the car dealer paid for his. I on the other hand could get no one help with this either. Chrysler needs to be accountable for the problems with there neon's and pay to correct these problems i will not buy another one. If chrysler wants me to buy there product again they need to make the first one right. Thank you for your time and concern.

Alternator failed 6 miles after warr. Exp. Dealer refuse to helpw/ any of costs. Now the head gasket same from dealer.

Six miles over my warranty my alternator went out. The dealership refused to fix it. My headgasket with less than 60,000.

Help ! it was just seven months ago i purchase a 1997 neon. I was so happy, i was going to be driving a fairly decentcar. It was 1998 and i was going to be driving a 1997. With a/c even. Ha. Ha. Ha. Needless to say i didn't know three weeks later i would be putting in a new transmission. Car in the shop for two weeks waiting on a part they had to order. Boy did that put a sour taste in my mouth. I called chrysler and wanted to give the car back. I no longer wanted the car. I knew then i would not have nothing but problems after that. Well you know they said no. Good thing i had the 1595.00 exteded serv. Contract i got the problem fix free . Well not really free it cost me 1595.00 for the warranty and fifty dollars everytime you have to put your car in the shop. I only had 30.000.00 miles and already needed it a transmission? hmmmm. In december we had a recall on the car. In jan.1999 i started having electrical failure. In feb.1999 my check engine light started coming on. Also in feb. I turn on my air conditing to find out it doesn't work. It was blowing out hot air. I call chrysler and they told me to bring it in. It was going to cost me the $50. Which i didn't think that was fair, being i just purchase the car in nov.1998. In mar. 12th i tookmy car in for brake inspection becuase i was having some problems when i would step on the brake pedal to stop the car, the brakes make noise like grinding metal to metal. My front brake pads were worn out, which they said had ruined the front rotors. And they recommend replacing rotors and d pads. They said the veh. Was not safe to drive in current condition. Well they wanted to chg. Me over $300.00 and i just didn't trust them any more so my dad did the job for $100.00. M y extended serv. Contract did not cover the brakes. I feel like i have a lemon for a car. I don't think this car is safe to drive there is all way something wrong with it. And it is putting a hole in my pocket. So much for a newer car so you can have few

Had received recallon radiator. While it was being repaired at dealer's, mechanic noticed head gaskets had blown on engine. Manufacturer informed owner head gaskets had nothing to do with radiator.

The attachment which covers the airbag / horn assembly is loose and can be pulledoff.

While driving vehicleengine head gaskets blewout.had happened twice, and each time was replaced along with spark plugs.

While driving vehicle would stall out due to engine failure caused by spark plugs burned out for unknown reason. Vehicle have been in/out of dealer shop on several occasions, and problem cannot be resolved. Dealer notified.

Battery light came on and won't go off.vehicle is hard to start due to a short withinignition switch. Consumer has to wait untilvehicle will start up. Dealer can't determine the cause of theproblem.

Head gasket needed to be replace after 45,000 miles.. Bought the car in 2002.. Bbrakes are horrible.. Brakes make noise, system operating normal fan relay switch .. Needed to be replaced.. And was also recalled.. In about 3 years ago.. And never notified.. Front end always clanking.. When u turn..

Vehicle would overheat if it was sitting at stop light.dealer replacedjumper wiring and radiator fan relay.also, manufacturer had a technical service bulletin. Consumer will add additional information relating to tsb.

I have talked to other people with neons made in 97 and they seem to have the same problems.also the paint is coming off.i have seen many neon's since i bought mine, with this same problem.. No safetyd efec tmentioned.

Driving 55mph & noticed smoke coming from under hood. Pulled to side of road. Smoke noticeable heavier inside vehicle. Lifted hood & flames were around engine area. Fire dept called & put flames out.was hard to determine origin of fire, but indicated it was electrical wiring.

Well lets see the first defect was a fan relay which was replaced 5 times before a wiring defect was found next we have "hard brakes" which contribuited to an accident which caused 7000 dollars in damage and 1 minor injury due to the fact that the air bags did not deploy, we follow that up with a leaky head gasket which chrysler was kind enough to return 1/2 of my out of pocket expenses along with wiring defects and air bags that don't come out other than the fact i have had more problems with this car than every other cars i have ever owned they made up for this lemon by having a bad customer service department too.

My car has had to have a circut board, fuel pump, fuel filter, and new gaskets at only two years old and 39280 miles.i feel that the circut board could cause crash or injury because i cannot tell how fast i am driving or if i have gas in my car.i was told at the dealer that there was a neon with the same problem (circut board) that they had fixed just the week before.

That is only some of the problems i have had with my neon, the speedometer sensor went out at 14,000 miles, the paint has been peeling even after car completely repainted at my cost paint peeled again va beach dodge told me it is a defect in the metal and paintthat the car would have to be treated with a chemical and repainted again for the third time, head gasket blew and head severly pitted my mechanic saw 5 in the week mine went out all leaking from the same area, engine looses power constantly, transmission slams into gears and sometimes does not want to change gears causing engine to race, car overheats periodicly since head gasket and head shaved, interior sensors for doors work randomly but mostly do not work, back up lights blow out every 2 months, cam sensor backs out of engine periodicly, front end makes clunking noise during turns was told strut bearings were bad and causing noise although after replacement noise continues, brakes always noisy cleaning and replacement does clear noise up, airleaks in windows of the car causing noisy ride, car does not like to start in cold weather, power loss was not able to be corrected even after mechanic had the car for 3 months and could find nothing causing it but could recreate the problem, and an o-ring on the fuel line connectors to the "fuel accumilator" blow out (happened 6 times so far) causeing gas to poor out on to road while vehicle is moving and engine to cut out..neons in general are lemons, chrysler even after contacting over several problems with the car refuse to help any with cost of repairs due to warranty expired. Would love to get rid of this car but can not due to only transportation and putting all money into it to fix it and repair chrysler's defects in design.

I bought my neon used (but only a year old) i have had many problems with this car my blinkers come on by themselves, my trunk and back floors are getting drenched (puddles of water 3 inches) my brakes are squaling, my door light is shorting my reverse lights are blown my head gasket has blown twice. I have also had problem with my fires under the hood. This car is made poorly. I am trying to trade it and it not as much as i owe. Talk to dealer but does not seem like they want to help.

First- the car blew a head gasket at less than 24000 mile. Now we continue to haveproblem with the car stalling. The fuse under the hood for the fuel system continues to blow. No one can seem to find the problem, i have completely replaced the fuel system. It is now in the garage forthe eighth time. Dodge will not back their product and the dealer just sends the car out to be repaired, since "they can not fix it". The vin number that was submitted is the number from the car. It is coming up the wrong number, this is the only number i have.

Under the dash electrical wiring short out, causinga fire, resulting in total loss of vehicle.

Instrument panel has a short, causing malfuncation of gauges/indicators. Please provide further information.

Circuit board behind instrument panel caught fire as i drove, sending smoke through dash both to left and right of speedometer-gauge area. No flame ever visible. Smoke stopped of its own accord. Gas gauge dropped to indicate "empty" - then returned to proper indication. I continued to drive home, then to garage, no apparent effect on any operating systems. Circuit board and gauge kit were replaced at no charge to me. (car still in warranty)service manager reported hole burned in circuit board 2 or 3 inches in diameter.

Safety/emissions reprt states recall on my vehicle/ defect number: dr-1158.the solid state fan relay may fail because of heat rellated electrical over stress causing the fan to stop and the vehicle to over heat.

Dash warning light came on, and thencar overheated, consumer pulled over, and vehicle would not start again. Had to be towed.

I own a 1997 dodge neon. Purchased june 1997. This car too date has approximately 27,500 original miles on it. Starting in august 1999 i had to have the head gasket replaced on 3 occasions.i had to have the same repair job done again in july 2001 when i had only put another 7,108 on the car. May 2003 i had for the 3rd time the same repair jobe done when my car reached 26152 (7,166 miles added after 2nd repair job). Too date the manufacture has paid the repair bills with the exception of a $100 deductible i had to pay the last time they reapired it. I protested having to pay the $100 because i felt the manufactur should have paid the complete bill. They refused to refund my money. This car has on ongoing problem with the head gasket. My fear is the manufacture will refuse to pay the repair bill the next time this happens and i don't know what my legal rights are because i feel i have a lemon.it seems the problem comes up as soon as i put 7,000 miles on the car. I had only put 14,000 miles from the first time this repair job took laceto the 3rd repair job. I have tried to talk to chrysler about the secret warranty i found on the internet for this very problem and was informed by a customer service rep.that the secret warranties are illegal and they do not honor them. I have been told by several mechanics this is a well know ongoing problem with the neon's and chrysler is well aware of it. I woul appreciate if i can receive any advice regarding whether or not my car falls under the lemon law considering the age of the car.

The vehicle's head gasket failed although it only had 44000 miles on it.*sc

1997 dodge neon caught fire. Consumer would like any info available about the problems that cause fires in the mid nineties model year dodge neons. The consumer was injured. (lawyer wrote in on behalf of client)

Temperature gauge alarm went off, warning consumer thatvehicle was running hot.vehicle was towed to the dealership, andmechanic told consumer that head gasket had blown .

For the second time the defective head gasket caused oil to leak.i had it replaced once and i feel it's too much to replace it again.i understand this is a common problem and i can't understand why dodge doesn't assist with fixing it right.

Transmission was rebuilt, main gear cracked, and head gasket problems.in addition, the consumer requested information on recalls and what justifies them. *ph the main gear experienced a crack in the casting and started to lost relating components.the consumer noticed that the casing of the transmission was wet.the consumer was told that the problem was the head gasket. *sc

First of all, my car has been leaking oil for quite a few months now ...i just kept putting a quart in every now and then.well, when i went to get the car inspected at pep boys, they said that my head gasket was leaking.they recommended me getting an estimate and the work done at an authorized dodge dealer.i want to find out more information from your organization or from dodge on the head gasket problems that dodge neons have.i didn't know this until very recently.i have no repair date or cost yet.i was hoping to get information before i get an appointment/fixed.can't this be a recall?if so many people have this problem with their neons why doesn't dodgefix them?i am paying a car loan on this and it needs fixed already...and it is a major fix.

While driving 65 mph head gasket and fuel pump failed without warning. As a result vehicle over eated. Dealer replaced the parts, and 2 1/2 years later ,the same parts failed again.

Temperature gauge went to hot/ smoke and liquid started pouring from vehicle.took vehicle to dealer, and they stated that it wascooling fan relay.please provide any further information.

Head gasket failure

The vehicle overheated without warning.

The biggest problem i have is the engine oil leaking. It is so costly to repair everytime. I never contacted the dodge company since i though that i gto a bad car.

My fiancee bought a 97 dodge neon from a friend at 35,000 miles. Now at 70,xxx the vehicle started to leak oil, i was putting in 3 quarts a week, the car runs very rough and the check engine light is on andi cant afford to tow it to a shop to find the problem (maybe cause ive spent all my money on oil due to the head gasket leaking?) i am in the middle of repairing my self just takeing a break from the chaos and my back hurts. Many neon have this problem the manufacturers redesigned a new head gasket, is this thier way of saying " hey we at dodge messed up bad and now you and thousands of other people can pay $600.00 -$1,000 to get it fixed" another bullitin from car quest say the oil leaks due to the cam sensor cover ile find out shortly i assume and if thats the case why arent any of these other mechanics catching that or do the know and just say it is the head gasket for more money from you? and i guess there was property damage my parents nice new drive has dodge dirty oil stains all over it, thanks dodge !! -- @$#holes!!

I made a short trip to a local store and large amounts of smoke started coming from the front of my car. The car was overheating and i had to stop and pull over. The car had to be towed to the dealership. The car had a head gasket failure.which cost $920 to repair. Although the vehicle is old (1997), it only has 39,000 miles on it and it is ridiculous for something like this to happen to car with such low mileage. I have done quite a bit of research online to find that several neon owners have had this same problem. The 1995-1997 models have been predominantly affected by this problem. I contacted chrysler about this and they will take no responsibility for this.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Vehicle is sitting idle for about 15 minutes and temperature gauge goes to hot. Vehicle overheats. Once vehicle is moving gauge goes back down. Dealer has been contacted.

Oil leak in engine.dealer found headgasket failure.on several occasions engine runs rough.camshaft replaced. Vehicle shakes and trembles while braking. Weatherstripping fell off on drivers side door.antifreeze leaking.dealer replaced water pump.battery clamp loose causing battery light to stay on.

The car started leaking oil x 2 months. Kept overheating after 20 minutes of running. Alle the radiator fluid leaked out. Had radiator fixed. Continued to overheat, told it was fan relay. Had that replaced. Now told that it was the gasket. That it had a leak and now needs to be replaced due to some thing about the aluminum.

Engine is leaking oil, andvehicle is running hot. Dealership is aware ofproblem.

Dash warning light came on, and thencar overheated, consumer pulled over, and vehicle would not start again. Had to be towed.

The vehicle overheated and made a loud noise when in reverse, also the engine light illuminated, the engine was replaced, however it continued to overheat and the engine light reappeared, the dealer then informed consumer a radiator and thermostat was needed, however the problem was still not resolved.

Exhaust manifold has failed twice within six months. Radiator fan relay failed and dealer stated there was no recall or t.a. On fan relay i had to pay for part at 39101 mi.???

Whenever i sit in the driveway, or look for a parking spaces, or sit in traffic...the car's temperature gage goes all the way to hot. I had it diagnosed and they said that its the fan control module or relay...basically the fans stop working.i had a new water pump put in, a new thermostat, a new radiator put, and i"m beginning to think that all these problems are coming up when the fans stop working. It has 145000 miles on it, but i was told that is not a common think on this module. I'm going to get repaired, but i feel that this is a manufacturer issue.

Through the life of owning this car.i havehad to replace the head gasket several times 3 times in last 2 years alone and replace the engine.the head gasket still leaks and no one can seem to fix it even the dealer.i have talked to other people that have neons and they are experiencing the same exact head gasket problem.why hasn't there been a recall for this.this is an extremely costly repair.

Head gasket needs to be replaced. Dealership examinedvehicle and found thatradiator fan relay switch circuit shorted out which could have allowedengine to overheat, and crack head gasket.please provide any additional information/attachments.

I just bought this 97 dodge neon with only 23,000 miles on it. The a/c has a leak in the coil , the transmission is slipping . The car is in great shape but those few things so far . The person who owned the car before me was an older gentleman who does not wreck his things.i was wondering are these problems, factory problems and/or recalls?*la

There is a blown enginehead gasket which is causing oil leakage within the engine compartment toward the fire wall. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has yet to replace parts.

I found out about a possible head gasket problem when i took my car to an auto repair shopfor another service.the repair man was going to change my transmission fluid/pan but then discovered that the seal to the pan on the head gasket may be leaking, but the pan was sealed with some type of sealant that he could not remove it.also, we were told that there are defects in the airbags and they were supposed to have been recalled, but i have never gotten any information pertaining to this "very important" issue.also, the paint on my car is literally falling off in patches.it appears to only be the only color (purpleish/blue) of the neon's that the paint is coming off.my car (keep in mind only 2yrs old) actually looks like a spotted cow.i can take my finger and peel the paint off with ease.there are cars that are 10yrs older than my 97 and the paint looks 100 times better!dodge is also aware of this "bad paint" but they want to charge $300 to get it re-painted--the exact same color??!!!dodge should replace the paint free of charge on all these models with this color paint.it makes me not even want to drive my 2 yr old car with paint missing from front, back, side to side.

I own a 1997 dodge neon - a model (and apparently, the dodge brand itself) that has a reputation for blowing head gaskets at about 60,000 miles because of a poor composite material the gaskets were made out of. Just today, i found the tell-tale sign of fluid mixture (oil in my coolant lines) that indicates a head gasket failure. I called chrysler and explained my situation, and the customer service rep told me that based on my car's year and the mileage (approx 54800), there was nothing they could do.i've scoured the internet and found countless tales of "secret warranties" and "customer goodwill money." stories about chrysler paying for the entire cost of a replacement, $100 deductables, 50/50 split policies, and of course, down-right refusals and denials of the problem itself, which chrysler acknowledged in a service bulliten, located here: http://www.neons.org/neontsb/tsb/09/090598.htmthey know about the problem, and have for many years, but continue to deny customers the appropriate compensation for a problem that is their fault.i'm going to call my local dodge dealers to see if i can get any different answers from them, but i doubt it.my complaint stands!

I contacted chrysler daimler 800-992-1997, i was told that there is no repair assistance or recall.although the service bulletin shows an upgrade and a change in the head gasket and additional installation requirements to be made. This became known in 1998, 1 year after my vehicle was built. This seems likely to be a defect and quality issue.

Engine gaskets had to be replace three times in town years.the brakes make a squealing and grinding noise.

Neon head gasket blown, had to pay 680$ to have replaced.they should have taken care of this.please contact me about this, and what should i do.thank you, [xxx]. Chrysler sold neons with known factory defects as evidenced by issuance of 70 tsbs and failed to recall cars which are highway hazards.to date, i have spent $10,088.79 on repairs due to these known defects.two head gaskets, cylinder heads, cam seals and sensors have been replaced by the dealer under chrysler's "secret warranty"--at 20,871 and 54,049 miles.now supposedly only defective camsensors are the problem.other defects beginning 20,000 miles: radio/tape player, vibration, clinkling/clunking sound, steering wheel shake, "toe" problem due to faulty design resulting in excessive tire consumption (tire & wheel run out), abs failure, brake failure due to faulty design, brake howling, brake metal to metal contact, need for larger brake drums, trunk weatherstripping defective, faulty design results in leaks to interior, lower control arm defective, cannot hold alignment, suspension system defective, tires collapse and fly off, ac failure (hose leaks, compressor replaced), new batteries repeated replaced ( aaa called 12 times and recharger purchased) now a tbs says this is due to a defective rke transmitter, 02 sensors, various seals leak, wiring defective, transmission replaced (nothing but shards of metal left--on display at transmission shop), transaxle differential replaced, oil leakage, lifetime brakes replaced every 6 months, insufficient power on incline, with parking brake and foot brake on car rolls or lurches when ignition turned off, steering column shakes violently at 45 mph, difficult to steer at under 45 mph, driver side rear view mirror fell off, turn signal defective, separation of lower control arm ball joint, wheelcover loss due to missing or loose bolts, rim replacements due to tires flying off, oil leak, glove compartment latch failure, poor design with no lights around lighter, and other minor problems. Chrysler is a negligent manufacturer and all neons should be taken off the road.

My daughter just turned 16 and bought a used 1997 dodge neon with 60,000 miles. The dealer told her of what had been done and replaced. One of his selling points was a new head gasket had been installed. Well it's been just over the 3 month, 3000 miles and the head gasket blew, spilling oil all over the highway. I went to the web, and to my horror this has happened to alot of people. The roads are being made hazardous with slippery oil and people are getting ripped off by a badly designed engine. Chrysler should recall them.i know you are well aware of the problem and hope your agency can make chrysler recall this accident waiting to happen.

Head gaskets are leaking coolant ontoengine.dealerhas been notified.chrysler offered to pay half of the repairs.

I have had my car checked out by a mechanic and he has stated that the oil leak is coming from the cylinder head in the back of the motor.he also stated that this is a manufacturer defect & that i should take it back to a dodge dealer to get repaired.this is not a safety related issue, but it is a costly mechanical repair issue that i feel needs to be looked into for possible recall to repair.

Consumer had taken vehicle forrepairsbecause oil was leaking.technician told consumer that itwas due to the engine head gasket blowing out.

Consumerhad foundoil ondriveway. Took vehicle to a repairshopforoil leakage, and they saidcause of oil leakage wasa blown head gasket.

This auto purchased used, unknown if any prior headgasket replacements.

I bought this pile of c... 2 years ago and had to replace the transmission with 38000 miles on it . Now the head gasket has failed. I was about to give the dealer $800 to repair it when the told me the engine has a crack in it. Now it will be $3500.00 for a new engine. It only has 71000 miles on it . And chrysler doesnt care that this is quite possily the worst car ever made. It ranks right up there with a yugo and a pinto

Vehicle was leaking oil.contacted dealer, problem due to head gasket going out.

Like so many others, the head gasket on my young neon has blown.i have also had problems with brakes squealing, power steering locking up in wet weather and the turn signal now only works when it feels like it.the radio had to be replaced the first year i owned the car - and it took the dealer nearly a month to get that done.

Engine head gasket blew out without prior warning at only 56,000.please provide further information.

Head gasket blew somewhere between 42,000 and 43,010 miles.it was noticed because oil was dripping underneath left front of car and oil was very low.no indicator lights had come on.took it to dealership where they determined that the head gasket had blown. Because of this they also had to do an engine flush, clean the engine, replace the pcv valve, and change the oil and coolant.this cost me a total of $825.00.my car is only 2 1/2 years old!since this occured i have found out by talking to repair shops and to other neon owners that this is a common problem and obviously a defect in the way it was built.

While vehicle was parked in driveway consumer noticed oil on driveway.. Dealer was contacted, noticed oil leak from engine head gasket. Please provide further informaton.

Head gasket blew. Oxygen sensor blew. Left rear brake pad fell off and jammed in the drum rendering the vehicle unmovable. Upon inspection, had to replace both drums, both discs, and new pads on front and back both sides. Window seals have failed on the passengers side front window. Water leaks in and air leaks at highway speeds, slows car down immensley and causes more fuel consumption. Driver's side window harshly scratched. Gets worse as time goes by, have seen other neon's with the same problem. Fuel filter went, causing the entire fuel injection system to have to be replaced.

Head gasket needs to be replaced. Dealership examinedvehicle and found thatradiator fan relay switch circuit shorted out which could have allowedengine to overheat, and crack head gasket.please provide any additional information/attachments.

The oxygen sensor and head gasket failed.

While driving there is a space between the motor, causing the oil to blow out of the engine.when the car stops the oil really spills out.

Consumer noticed an oil leaak. Took car to dealer, and dealer said that head gasket needed to be replaced.

The head gasket blew out in my car as i was driving in town.the oil light came on all of a sudden and i pulled over thinking that i was just low in oil.so i added three quarts and proceeded to drive.the next day it was already low again.this is when i decided that something was wrong.this is a defect in the head gasket and in no way my fault.

Shortly after buying this car it started to show oil on the floor, most cars leak a little thought little of it. January 15 i seen a large wet spot on floor and investigated it to find it was the left rear corner of the head. Talked to chrysler about this and was informed that it was very common. I reminded them that there was only 32000 miles on the car. Was informed i was out of warranty and they would go to 50% on the total bill. I've seen where there are a lot longer warranties that are kept secret from us, if this is so can you get me to the place that i have to be to find this info so that i might get this rectified?if no recall is going to ever happen on an item that has been known to be defective for a long time what are we to do?

We took this vehicle in to a dealer in sierra vista in 1998 and were told that the problem was fixed.after several months, the same problem reoccured and now the oil leak is more severe.the dealer did not let us know if the head gasket was actually replaced or not.

Head gasket failed. Dealer refuses to help w/costs. Please help!

Oil from leaking head gasket and valve cover gasket leak directly onto exhaust system, specificallythe catalytic converter causing fire under the hood.i have known and read of many, many others with this same problem.oil leakage in excess of 3 qts.per week.the smell of burning oil inside of the car is noxious.i have a 3 month old baby,a 5 year old, and my wife and we can hardly take a 30 minute trip without having to stop for fresh air.there is a definate possibility of the driver or passengers losing conciousness.smoke has been visible inside the car before from the burning oil.

Engine head gasket oil leak.

Consumer noticed that there wassome oil leaking.consumer took vehicle in to a mechanic, andmechanic told him thathead gasket was defective.

The first issue with the blown head gasket, occured around 32,000 miles.it was fixed without any problems.i am now having the same problems again; oil leaking, extremely rough idling, and have scheduled an appointment to get my car in.hopefully it will be covered under my added warranty.the second problem is with the paint job.the original paint is lipis blue and is peeling and flaking off in many places.at 35,500 miles, they touched up the problem areas, told me of the defect in the primer, and then informed me they could not paint the entire car, only the panels which did not pass the tape test.i have contacted them again more recently because of other peeling problems.it is my belief the car should have been painted completely when they informed me of the defect.

The first problem i had with this car was the head gasket blew out. Chrysler agreed to pay for it (the $1000 was my estimate of what it cost to replace the gasket). The second problem was the throttle assembly and coil pack quit working, both at the same time. I paid $600 out of my pocket to fix them. The third problem was the automatic transmission started slipping and the car will not go into reverse when its cold. The fourth most current problem is the brakes are not working properly the pedal will not go down and the dealer says its probably something to do with the vacuum system. I contacted chrysler and they are not willing to pay for the repairs for the transmission, even though they have admitted that they have problems with automatic transmissions per information i obtained from a web sitecalled lemon- aid.****** i will never buy a dodge again!!!i'm spreading the word. I come into contact with many people everday. So sorry dodge!!!******

Had received recallon radiator. While it was being repaired at dealer's, mechanic noticed head gaskets had blown on engine. Manufacturer informed owner head gaskets had nothing to do with radiator.

Replaced 3 head gaskets in 1997 dodge neon. Fewer than 33,000 miles at replacement of third head gasket. *la

The head gasket went out of my '97 neon only 45 days after the extended warranty expired. I called the 800 # on the warranty card and they pretty much hung up the phone on me saying there was nothing they could do about it. I have done some investigating and it seems this is a very common error with this car, even the dealer told me it was a problem. It cost me $678.00 to repair a dealer design fault.

The head gasket was leaking and had to be replace it took two weeks to get the part because they said that most of the 97 neons head gasket was blown

Head gasket blown twice and problem still exists.brakes let up when floored at complete stop.

Six months ago severe overheating problems, told relay not functioning. Dodge neon has serious problems with enginehead gaskets- attempts to repair them( 4 x's in just 7000 miles ) were futile- chrysler should recall these vehicles.

Vehicle experienced oil leakage. Vehicle taken to anindependent repair shop.consumerwas informed of ablown head gasket. Dealer was not notified. Vehcile has also had electrical problems.

Engine cylinder head gasket failed, causing major oil leak/head also badly pitted.

Vehicle's brakes malfunctioned.*mrthe vehicle had other problems such as a bad battery, alternator, three turn signal switches, a blown head gasket, sticking throttle body, an oil pan leak, all four windows had an air leak which whistle when the vehicle was driven at high speeds.

The consumer saw oil leaking from the vehicle.the dealership informed the consumer that the problem pertained to a head gasket failure.the mechanic did not resolve the problem.on june 3rd 2002, the consumer had to have the transmission re-built.the main gear had a crack in the casting and started to loose teeth.the consumer noticed the casing of the transmission was wet.the heads of the engine were warped.the dealers in both case only changed the gasket and not checking to see if the head was warped.when the vehicle was cold in the morning, it wouldn't engage in reverse for up to 30 seconds, then clunks in hard and if driving when still cold, it seemed to shift in and out of gear.(and shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd and over revs in 2nd prior to shifting) *sc

The vehicle has been leaking oil due to a blown engine head gasket. Dealerhas seen vehicle.

The problem seems to be with the 1995-1998 neons and the headgasket failing any where from 40000 miles to over 50000;if you go to the website leak neonheadgaskets.com or neon headgaskets you will see how many problems people have had. Daimlerchrysler will not repair the problem for free. They offer a variety of "good will" assistance but i feel with the number of cars and people being affected there should bea recall and the headgaskets fixed free of charge. I was amazed at how many people had the same problem. I had to fix other things that were related to the headgasket leak and all they would authorize was $300 assistance while i have to pay over $550. Please investigate. They would not even let me speak to the owner or district manager.

Oil is leaking from the right enginehead gasket which could cause the engine to lock up.please give any further details.

Oil leak detected by myself at about 40-45,000 miles; had a non-chrysler mechanic look at it and told me it looked like the head gasket (50,000+ miles by this time) - couldn't afford the $400.00+ to repair at that time.when i finally had the money (8/10/00 and 88,000 miles) my mechanic referred me to o-reily's because he had heard of a recall.o'reilly's gave me the run around.i am pursuing every avenue to get this problem corrected including the attorney general's office.

I heard alot of head gasgets on 95-99 neon have failed and chysler has paid to repair them even when they are out of warenty. When i called them they acted like they never heard of the problem before i talked to the dealer and they just blew me of to . My bill was $900.00. I can't belive there was not a recall when so many head gasgets have failed.

Ever since i bought the car used i have had numerous problems.here is just a brief list:incorrect gas mileage both city and highway, transmission problems, brakes squeaking, air coming through bad window seals, defrost not working properly, air conditioning not working correctly,3 oxygen sensors replaced, 2 head gaskets replaced, and water coming into the trunk which has caused the jack and tire changing equipment to rust.also the water then leaks into the back floor which causes the car to smell.the cs for dodge will not agree to fix the problem with the original roof design which would correct the water from coming into the trunk.for the past year, about every 2 months something is going wrong with the car which has just a little over 62,000 miles and proper maintenance has been followed.

Consumer states vehicle has defective head gaskets causing oil leaks. Vehilce no longer under warranty.

I purchased this vehicle 5-15-03 and noticed an oil leak the size of a 50 cent piece every time the vehicle was driven. When purchasing i asked if the head gasket problems had been taken care of on neon's, and was told it is not an issue anymore. I had an oil change today 7-18-03 and was told that i needed a new head gasket and it was an often done repair at a cost of $700.00! after researching on the internet and finding hundreds of complaints about head gasket failure on this particular model, i am more than slightly displeased that dodge, knowing of the problem, and even having a service bulletin out regarding this very problem is interested in taking care of it's owners, i will not be buy a dodge, chrysler, or plymouth ever again!

When consumer took vehicle to get oil changed was notified thathead gasket was leaking .

Similar complaints have already been filed wit regards to oil leaks at the head gasket.attempted repair were made approx. 1 1/2 months after leak was discovered.two attempts to replace the leaking gasket were made by a lisenced mechanic.after these attempts were made, it was recommended that i take it to the dealer for repair.

I purchased this car with approximately 26,000 miles on it and have taken meticulous care of it, including all routine maintenance. The cost i've been quoted to replace this head gasket is approximately $977. A part like that should last the lifetime of the engine... Not 61,000 miles. Judging from all the postings i've read on the internet, this is an extremely common failure mode for the neon engine and i feel that the manufacturer should bear some financial responsibility for a part like this that is failing prematurely.

Replaced headgasket in 12/99 needs headgasket again\oil leaksagain.

There is a busted head gasket that is leaking oil from the vehicle, causing the car to smoke. Dealer has seen.

Engine head gasket is leaking oil, cause unknown.please give any further details.

Weeks after routine oil/filter change i noticed oil pooling under vehicle, especially while running. Found head gasket blown.

Head gasket blew and repaired through local dealer. We were told this was an on going problem with this model. We contacted the main office and got nowhere. We were told it's not a recall so we can't help you. The customer service rep. Was very rude and hung up on us. It cost us over $600.00 for the repair. If this is an ongoing problem dodge needs to be resposible. We were very loyal dodge owners but from now on we are not. There is a tsb on this but we were told if it's not a recall we cannot help you. This needs to be addressed.nlm

Gas mileage has droped to 1/2 the normal rate of 300 miles per tank of gas. Howeling noise from newly installed transmission at 20-30 mph and again at 55-65 mph.

Dealer also replaced camshaft/crankshaft position sensors.

After driving the newly purchased neon (purchase used, as is) we noticed a leak under the car after being parked.we had the problem looked at and it was determined to be a major oil leak from the head gasket of the car. Being a fairly new model, i feel that this may be a defect in the parts and i want to know if this complaint has been logged before for this model.i am already furious that a dealership can get away with selling a vehicle in this condition, and i would like to know what recourse, if any i have.

Took vehicle in to repair shop after noticing an oil leak.they told me at first it was normal leaking from routine oil change.then thanksgiving day 2001, at freeway speeds (75 mph) the head gasket blew.oil went every where.i had oil even in the coolant system.took to my personal mechanic, he told me he has seen this many times before with neon's.final price to fix problem 987.36, head gasket replaced coolant system flushed out, etc. Now i need a new radiator because of it.seems to be common with this year of vehicle.my friend had a 1998 dodge neon that the head gasket was recalled in and she was able to get it fixed for free.obviously for consumer satisfaction it would be in chryslers best interest to acknowledge, at the very least, that they have produced a less than satisfactory engine component in the 1997 neon.what i would like to see is that some of the money, if not all, is refunded back to us.otherwise i am satisfied with my neon.it is out of commission right now due to needing a water pump.i purchased the vehicle december 20th, 1996 and have been the only owner.

I had bought 2 new dodge neons, 1997 & 1998. First 1998 neon hadengine gasket problem, daimlerchrysler fixed it &i paid $100.00 as i had extended warranty. Now 1997 neon with lower mileage has same engine gasket problem. Two cars same problem.requested daimler-chrysler to fix theproblem as this is manufacturing problemdaimlerchrysler is refusing to fix it.please make daimlerchrysler fix this for all neon ownersthis is similar to the jeep car problem after you all got after them they are fixing the jeep problem for the jeep customers without any charge.the engine gasket problem is an inherent problem with neon cars.*la

On sunday july 23, 2000, i was on my way home from a restaurant with my family, i came up to an intersection and stopped. After aproximately 10 seconds at the stop light, i noticed the air conditioner began blowing hot air. I immediately glanced at the temperature guage in the car. It had risen to aproximately 3/4 of the way toward the red mark. I immediately turned the ac off and then turned the heat on as to not raise the heat anymore than what it already was. I was within a mile of my mechanics , so i drove over there and dropped off the car. On the next day, my mechanic called me to tell me that my head gasket had blown. He then told me that these cars were known for this particular problem. I then called smithfield dodge ( where i bought the car ) they gave me the service manager and he told me that they were having alot of problems with the head gaskets on the neons. He told me to call the complaints line at dodge/chrysler and that even though it was no longer under warranty that they would probably repair it for free as they were on the verge of a recall with these cars. My wife called and left a message with the regional district manager who called me back and tried to strike up a bogus deal with me, offering to fix the car for 544.00 saying this was the best they were going to do. I had also heard from people over the internet who had also had this problem and they didn't have to pay for their repairs and, they too were also over the warranty. I also heard that this is not the same gasket, they have redesigned it to accomadate the problem. This alone should be recourse for a recall. I still owe two years on this car and i can't afford bills like this. I want a full reimbursement for the work i had done on the car. I have always maintained all my vehicles and kept them all in excellent running condition. This is a problem which is occuring constantly on these vehicles. Check the internet if you don't believe me. People are not happy with dodge. They're not !

Oil was leaking from vehicle, consumer had to constantly put oil into vehicle. Vehicle was taken to dealer, and consumer was informed that head gasket was defective.

1997 dodge neon, color lapuis blue, i am the original and only owner.not only have i had a series of engine repairs between 40,000 to 80,000 miles, the same as i've read on dozen's of other consumer complaints, i now have the peeling lapuis blue paint which started slowly peeling a year ago. The paint now blows off the car as i drive. This car has cost the consumers thousands of dollars, and should have been recalled for all the defects in this car.

The vehicle has had three head gaskets and a transmission replaced once, as well as three neutral safety switches because the back up lights would not shut off, there is also a clnking sound in the front end and safety tsb's on it and the dealer still refused to correct it when under bumper to bumper, dodge's philosophy is wait till the bumper to bumper is done to have the person pay either with the deductable on the service contract or out of pocket.legislation should be passed to have a 3-36 war. On all replacement parts installed during a war. Period incase of failure.

While driving average speed 40 mph, the head gasket ruptured, with a major leak.the owner was informed this by a mechanic.please provide details. Ts

Head gasket failure. There should be a recall contacted chrysler and they said no!

The car has been over heating and cutting off for the past three years. The company has only put a patch on the problem. The car has been in the shop about 13 times for the problem. I feel that this car is a safty factor and is very dangerous.

I am concerned about oil leaks from my 2.0l 16v engine, at 29,000 miles the dealer corrected the oilleak by replacing the head gasket. At that time i also complained of a noise (lifter knock), they said it was not unusual and i let it go. Now i have 46,000 miles on the vehical and the oil continues to drip and the so-called normal lifter noise now sounds like a diesel engine when it is cold. It is now past its warranty period. I would like to let the manufacture know about my problem and refer to an article contained in the seattle times newspaper dated march 24, 2000 page f1 entitled "chrysler quietly pays head-gasket bills on neon".

Noticed oil leak, took to mechanic, was told head gasket was gone.i have only 37,000 miles on this car and it has been routinely maintained.i am waiting for the dealership to look at it and decide when they will pay for it to be fixed.they are looking at these cases on a one on one basis, which should show that these cars need to be recalled or paid to be fixed by the dealer or chrsyler.

Speed control speedometer doesn't work most of the time. Replace the sencsor but still doesn't work. I will never buy a dodge again. I've also had to replace the brakes and rotor, catalytic converter. Now i'm having trouble with the paint. It's bubling and peeling off in layers all over car.

Help ! it was just seven months ago i purchase a 1997 neon.

Spare tire cavity was full of water. This caused the spare to be rusted as well as the floor under the tire and the jack. I have never had to use the spare so i dont know how long the water has been there. From the amount that was in there, i would say it has collected every rain drop since i have had the car. This caused me to have my car towed instead of being able to use the spare. This could have been very bad if i had been in a rural area or if i had no car phone. If there's anything you can do, please let me know. A rear taillight was replaced under warranty when i first got the car due to water intrusion. Maybe this is what caused the problem.

Reverse lights does not work.the lights and fuses have been tested and show no signs of a defect.the dealer has been notified.

I have talked to other people with neons made in 97 and they seem to have the same problems.also the paint is coming off.i have seen many neon's since i bought mine, with this same problem.. No safetyd efec tmentioned.

My first complaint would be about the paint.my car has been peeling for the past 2 years now, it bubbles then peels and gets bigger and bigger every day. It is now peeling in 6 spots, the largest is the size of a watermelon. Very unhappy!!!! second, the brakes are horrible, the squealing of metal on metal has been occurring since day 1 of getting my car. I was recently driving on a major highway and my steering wheel began shaking like crazy.i pulled over and everything seemed fine.i continued to drive but could not accelerate faster than 60km/hr.i tried driving my car to the mechanics but in the end did not get very far. I pulled over once again and noticed smoke coming from my drivers side front wheel. I also noticed the wheel well caught on fire due to the friction.my car was then towed and my mechanic diagnosed the problem as a ceased caliper.beware, this was scary.my whole front end brake system had to be replaced.too add,i find it's hard to see at night due to a defective plastic that covers the head lights.they are foggy and don't give out enough light.lastly, i find that the sealants on the windows of my two door are horrible.i have to push on my window when closing it in order for the window to seal.this is a big problem, my car was stolen because of this problem. A recall should definitely be considered for the paint, breaks and headlight covers and windows/seals!!!

The contact owns a 1997 dodge neon.the headlights and high beams are very dim.the bulbs were replaced; however, the lights remained dim.oil was placed in the vehicle, but then leaked onto the ground, causing the oil warning indicator light to illuminate intermittently.the contact noticed a grayish-colored smoke exiting the rear of the vehicle.the repair shop stated that the failure was caused by a blown head gasket.the failure mileage was 97,000 and current mileage was 140,301.

In the words of the chrysler fire investigator."... Fire appears to have started after the vehicle sustained a hard impact to the front area of the vehicle..."the report goes on to say that the fire was not caused by a manufacturing defect.i am very concerned that if this vehicle had not caught fire it would not have been a total loss and that it appears to me that the reason it caught fire is a design defect involving the electric fuel pump.i would think that a provision should be made to shut down the electric fuel pump on an impact which breaks a fuel line.this seems to be a significant safety problem which should be looked at and corrected.

While driving 65 mph head gasket and fuel pump failed without warning. As a result vehicle over eated. Dealer replaced the parts, and 2 1/2 years later ,the same parts failed again.

Fuel pump failed.

Transmission clunks.

Have also had transmission, electrical failure, and brake failure at low mileage, very unhappy.

After placing vehicle in park, removingkey from the ignition, and when exitingvehicle, gear shift moved out of position, causing unwanted vehicle movement, resulting in the vehicle rolling forward.this caused injuries to the driver . Consumer has contacteddealer.

Automatic transmission has been replaced because of shaking,/vibrating, and performing erratically at various speeds.mileage at that time was 74,000 miles.replacement transmission failed completely with no interaction from vehicle.please describe details.

Help ! it was just seven months ago i purchase a 1997 neon. Transmission is sluggish and headgasketleaking, took to dealer.transmission is now completely failed.

Transmission failed at only 75,000 miles. Causewasunknown. No prior warning.

Transmission mount broke while driving.

Vehicle hesitates, primarily when pulling away from a stop.more frequent in cold weather.

Vehicle was parked, child's foot hit the gear shift when attempting to get a bag out, the vehicle rolled back. Accident occurred, hitting various things.dealer contacted andinspected vehicle. Stated owner's manual parking brake should be on, and keys should have been removed. Consumer said everything was done.dealer cannot duplicate the problem. .et.

Alvin dodge states that i have "hard lip seals" - should be soft and pliable.internal clutch failure. Other parts shot.dodge is only paying for parts.

Vehicle transmission bucks violently when in second gear, unable to rectify failure after three attempts.

While driving 30 mph, applying the brakes and the braking system malfunctioned, causing the brakes to lock up and vehicle to spin around.had a rollover in which the defective seatbelt unlatched during the accident, and after rollover was completed the driver's and passenger's airbags deflated improperly.

Point of impact was driver's side front.neither airbag deployed, front passenger seat belt did not lock.neon was declared a total loss due to suspension and engine damage.

Clip that goes into the buckle ofseat belt has a plastic catch that locks. Plastic clip that locksseat belt around personwhen disconnectedplastic clip pops off.

Both rear retractors will not lock properly when brakes are applied in an emergency situation. Dealer was notified, and unwilling to assist because vehicle was not covered under a manufacturer'srecall. Consumer needs seat belts that lock due to needing child safety seat belted in securely.

Vehicle just shut off while stopping at a stop sign, and would not restart. Also, battery light and seat belt light came on.consumer had vehicle towed to dealer.

Electrical buzzer problems.

Driver side and passenger seats failed to lock in place. They both flop forward - i was rear-ended by a refrigered big-rig and this contributed to my injuries.

The air bags did not deploy, and she received some musculoskeletal injuries and was very sore.her vehicle was totaled.daimlerchryslerwon't claim any responsibility for the defect on the vehicle. *ph *scc

Right front brake did not lock up when applied for a sudden stop at 30 mph.vehicle crashed and air bags did not deploy.

Brakes fail without warning.

Engine gaskets had to be replace three times in town years.the brakes make a squealing and grinding noise.

Consumer was exiting parking lot when she applied brakes and the brakes went to the floor and then a loud click was sounded. The vehicle kept moving.consumer still had foot on brake and pressing to the floor as it began to make grinding noises. As consumer proceeded, the grinding noise wasstill there.now, whenever vehicle is started the grinding noises automatically begins. Consumer had this happen two times before. Took vehicle to dealer for repairs. This is the third time vehicle is being repaired for same brake problem. Dealership--southbay mitsubishi--3131 pacific coast hwy---310-539-9797.

Steering: driving approximately 15mph and went over speed bump, steering locked up and could not steer car left or right, struggled to turn left to get back on highway, hit the brakes and the brakes did not work. Hit 3 ton boulder ,and car was totaled.

Vehicle accelerated after letting off gas; driver applied brakes left front side locked up, causing the vehicle to turn over.

Brake pedal feels like it bottems out, especially when first driven.moving under 10mph,car continues to move and brakes are appied fully, pedal has no more travel,if brake is pumped, it's ok. ,as if air in lines,or bad brake booster. Dealer cannot duplicate. Also, replaced pads and rotors-does not happen 100% of the time.

Like so many others, the head gasket on my young neon has blown.i have also had problems with brakes squealing, power steering locking up in wet weather and the turn signal now only works when it feels like it.the radio had to be replaced the first year i owned the car - and it took the dealer nearly a month to get that done.

When appyingthe brake pedal to stop vehicle, brakes will not stop into a few feets away, and the pedal feels hard and high.

The brakes are horrible.. Grind as if metal on metal.. Have had them checked by dealer and two other brake specialits.all say brakes work fine.. However grind horribly.. And chirp continuously.. Nobody can figure it out.the paint is another issue.it peels all over including trunk, doors, roof, etc.seems to be only lapis blue color that does it.i have a list of 12 vehicles in this color that are peeling as well as several photos. Dealer wanted me to pay, even while under warranty.. Phoned daimler chrysler and it took 4 months of fighting with them to agree to re-paint however they will only re-paint where it is peeling.. Unacceptable, as more paint will continue to peel in other areas.this is a manufacturing defect and should be covered with no questions.. They are well aware of the problem.. The brakes should be fixed also.i did not bought a new car to avoid problems like these.. This car is a lemon and should be recalled.there are so many problems listed on the complaint page for this vehicle.. How long will it be before someone at the nhtsa does something for us??

Brakes make grinding noises, cleaned rear brakes shoes, noise went away. *et

Independent shopreplaced twice the front brake pads/rotors, and the caliper pin. Also, engine head gasket was leaking oil.

Independent shopreplaced twice the front brake pads/rotors, and the caliper pin. Also, engine head gasket was leaking oil.

Brakessquel and make noise, car won't stop above 50 mph in safe distance.

Brake rotors failed, causing vibration.

Entire brakes system and rotors had to be replaced bymechanic due tosystem being rusty and making squealing noise.

Independent shopreplaced twice the front brake pads/rotors, and the caliper pin. Also, engine head gasket was leaking oil.

Speed control speedometer doesn't work most of the time. Replace the sencsor but still doesn't work. I will never buy a dodge again. I've also had to replace the brakes and rotor, catalytic converter. Now i'm having trouble with the paint. It's bubling and peeling off in layers all over car.

I am having a lot of problems with my 1997 dodge neon. The steering wheel has nothing but clicks. I am having so much problems turning on my signal lights. The problem has gotten worse. I am hoping that this is a recall so i won't have to pay so much money out of pocket.

Steering: driving approximately 15mph and went over speed bump, steering locked up and could not steer car left or right, struggled to turn left to get back on highway, hit the brakes and the brakes did not work. Hit 3 ton boulder ,and car was totaled.

While driving 50 mph and turning right steering wheel locked up, resulting in vehicle hitting a wall. Also, there was no deployment of airbags in vehicle. Cause unknown.

Consumer received recall notice on 08-nov-97, called on the tenth of nov, dealer said it will take more than ten days for parts. Cunsumer claims this is unacceptable.

Consumer has had three incidents concerning vehicle steering wheel. On the last incident consumer was driving on a two lane canyon road, approx 45 mph, before coming to anapproaching turn, consumer applied brake to slow down to 35 mph; steering wheel became stuck and hard to turn; consumer barely made the turn, causing danger to consumer . Dealer notified. As always informed the consumer that nothing can be founded.

While driving on highway the vehicle stalled, causing driver to loose control of vehicle because steering wheel locked up. Driver was able to coast to the side of the road safely.the map sensor was replaced by dealer on 10/27/97. On 10/28/97 while making a left turn the vehicle stalled again, almost causing a crash. Dealer also replaced camshaft/crankshaft position sensors.

Like so many others, the head gasket on my young neon has blown.i have also had problems with brakes squealing, power steering locking up in wet weather and the turn signal now only works when it feels like it.the radio had to be replaced the first year i owned the car - and it took the dealer nearly a month to get that done.

Power steering becomes inoperative periodically without warning, causing steering to go hard, difficult to maintain control. Dealer has tightened steering belt, and replaced some steering components. Defect is still occurring.

Power steering unit makes noise when starting or whenmaking turns. Vehicle at dealer shop. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.

When driving over a puddle or when driving in the rainpower steering belt getswet, causing steering to become difficult which caused driver to almost hit a pedestrian. Consumer has contacteddealer. Dealer has replacedbelts and has tightened them. However, problem returns whenever it rains.manufacturer has provideddealer with instruction to tightenbelts, and check the torque every three thousand miles.

Consumer says that only when driving under wet conditions that the power steering belt gets loose, causing problems with the power steering. Also, brake pedal gets hard and the steering will not retract when turning a corner. Dealer has been contacted.

Steering belt failed.

Steering knuckle sheered off of right front wheel with no collision or accident. Right front hub cab fell off as well.*la

Intermittently, while driving the vehicle and makinghard left or right turns the steering wheel becomes hard to turn, and bumpingnoise would come from the steering column area. The dealer could not find a problem with the vehicle.

Problem:water leaking into the trunk through the taillight filled the spare tire well and soaked into the back seat.we now have a musty smell indicating a mold problem, probably from the seat.we have used professional cleaning supplies to try eliminate the smell.the cleaning did help but the smell is still there.since my wife and daughter have asthma, and are alergic to mold, i will most likely have to replace the back seat.cost unknown.i started searching the web for similar problems with neons last night after a neighbor, who also owns a neon and knew aboout our problem, came to talk to me because the same thing just happened to theirs. Problem showed up last summer (2002)at approximately 50,000 miles.

Paint defect.mr

I have a 1997 dodge neon. Within the last couple of months the paint has suddenly started to peel and buckle as if the primer no longer holds it. I have noticed the paint on other neons as i am driving are also peeling the same way.*la

This is the 4th time the paint is peeling from my lapuis blue neon.why won't they repaint the entire car?

I bought this neon in august of 1998, it has been nothing but problems since purchase.i have had to have the electrical system worked on twice.when you go over 60mph the steering wheel rattles.the speakers for the radio work sometimes.the overhead light comes on while driving.when it rains the front floor boards get soaked with water. Last month the i needed to replace the headgasket, and after several calls the the manufacturer they paid half, but the next day the engine started to knock severly.

Consumeroften finds water onfloorboard whether it rains or not, and does not know where it is coming from. Dealerhas a brand new automobile on the lot and it does the samething. Cannot find the cause.

Roof is lifting water licking into car.

Biggest concern at this point is the air and water leak. This has gone all the way up to the attorney general. Air leak is so loud i feel it is a safety concern. We cannot hear sirens or anything else but air for that matter. Alamo car company and chrysler say it is not repairable and air and water leaks are common in neons. We requested they buy our vehicle back for the numerous problems we've had with it, but they refused to. They offered us a 6 year/75,000 mile warranty. We had purchased an extended warranty when we purchased our vehicle, so this is useless. It is also useless because chrysler states they cannot fix the problem, so how will the warranty help the air and water from leaking. I have all documentation on hand.

1997 dodge neon - head gasket leaked - was replaced for a small fee once dealer was contacted.now we have a problem with the paint on the truck and side peeling and bubbling off.what can we do?can we contact the dealer to have the car repainted?i've noticed several complaints online regarding this problem with neons.*la

A split onleft side of all 1997, dodge, neon bumpers. Dealer and manufacturer were not notified at this time. Provide any further information concerning this matter.

Door rubs against the hinges and is bent inward. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.door makes noises when opening and closing.

The panels of the door are faulty, and cause the vehicle to be flooded with water in the passenger's side compartment.

Engine is leaking oil/dashboard lights go out and come back on at random intervals/ engine checklight comes on and stays on/ door ajar alarm will come while vehicle is in operation, andtransmissionwill get stuck between gears and engage forcefully. .please provide any additional information/attachments.

Trunk leaks, causing back seat floor to flood. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

Trunk leaks when it rainsmats and panel smell .it seems to be coming through the vents of the trunk . Dealer was contacted, but no coaperation. Manufacturer was called, but can't get through to them.

Trunk is soaked with water every time it rains, causing all carpeting to be mildewed and moldy, jack and spare tire rim to rust.

There is a leak in the trunk area, flooding the back of the vehicle with three inches of water . Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has determined the causeto be the non sealing of the trunk and tail lights. Please provide any further details.

Every time it rains our trunk gets soaked and the water moves through the floor board carpet and soakes the floor from front to back.

I have talked to other people with neons made in 97 and they seem to have the same problems.also the paint is coming off.i have seen many neon's since i bought mine, with this same problem.. No safetyd efec tmentioned.

Driver pulled into a parking space and the vehicle sat low to the ground which caused the front to hit the front wheel, resultingin deployment both of the air bags. Once the air bags deployed, the driver's and passenger's side windows blew out. The driver does not understand way the air bags deployed.

This should not happen to a new vehicle at only 24,000 miles. This happenes to a lot of neons. No safety defect (s) listed in the summary.

I realize this isn't a safety complaint, but i have nowhere to turn.my car is 3 years old, with no history of damage, no rust, no reason for the paint to suddenly start coming of in huge flaps, that i pick up off the driveway on windy days and put in my glove compartment.i complained to the dealership and they said, "we've never heard of that." and that was the help i got.i have seen neons (at least six to date) randomly around my area, in my color (lapis blue) all with this exact problem.i find it very hard to believe that chrylser doesn't know about this!!!! the chrysler website provides nowhere to turn for complaints, not even a phone #.is there anything at all that can be done? no safety defect listed in summary.

Paint has bubbled, cracked and peeled off leaving the metal bare. Rusting has already started in several spots and it getting worse. Have been informed that paint peeling is a factory defect but chrysler is denying fault.no safety defect listed in the summary.

Several machanics have mentioned similar problems in/on dodge neons. No safety defect listed in the summary.

The exterior paint of the 1997 dodge neon coupe in lapuis blue is peeling off the hood and top of vehicle. Very poor paint job as car is housed in a garage. No safety defect.

This is a known problem that daimler chrysler is well aware of.they should recall this and many other neons instead of making me pay for the repair myself.if one logs onto the internet it becomes painfully apparent with a quick search that thousands of people have the same experience as me.

Problem with 1997 dodge neon.*mr

Engine check light came on, and engine was running rough. Dealer determinedegr valve had failed, and had to be replaced.

While driving engine check light would come on and remain on.also, vehicle stalled out while in traffic.

Speed control speedometer doesn't work most of the time. Replace the sencsor but still doesn't work. I will never buy a dodge again. I've also had to replace the brakes and rotor, catalytic converter. Now i'm having trouble with the paint. It's bubling and peeling off in layers all over car.

Consumer states that thespeedometer does not work correctly. Dealer notified.

Turned on the car with foot on brake, put car in drive, removed foot from brake and car accelerated and hit head on a 1999 dodge dakota.pressed on the brake as car sped across the lot and nothing happened.engine made high pitched whirring noise.airbags did not deploy.my incident resembles the one posted on the nhtsa web site odi id# 535732.

Cruise control not operating properly. Stays on, and when brakes are applied, does not cut off. Dealer contacted, and cannot duplicate problem. Problem still exists. *ml

Glare from dashboard reflecting on the windsheild is dangerous. At times the glare makes it almost impossible to see when heading into the sun. This is a problem even when wearing sunglasses.

Tire/wheel balancing problems, causing front end vibrations.
