In august of 1999, due to a health problem (unknown to me), i fell asleep at the wheel of my 1996 neon.i awoke in time to force the car over to a grassy median between two parts of a four lane highway.the car flew twenty or so feet in the air, making impact with the grass, and continuing without power steering, etc., for approximately. 300 feet.while in the air, my left arm broke the driver side window.when the car landed dead on to the grass, the air bags burst, but "wilted" down, they did not come straight out at me as normal, but down, after exploding.my mechanic informed me that this was not normal for a car in this kind of accident, and that the car may have been in a prior accident, or the air bags may have been improperly installed.i received chemical burns on the inner parts of the arms, and developed a lung problem due to the inhaled chemicals.since the airbags exploded improperly, my two young daughters were frightened even more, especially since it sounded like a gun had been shot.my concern is that other air bags may react in the same way, even if there is no front impact.i had notified my mechanics in the ebensburg and cresson, pa areas, where the accident occurred, as well as the ambulance drivers, and any others i could about this situation.i also notified the hosts of car talk.i have not heard of this happening elsewhere, but i did notice that air bags were not mentioned on your website, and felt that it was important to notify the public of this potential problem.

This is a safty problem that should be cause for a recall. How many complaintsor lives will it take before nhtsa takes action aganist this car manufacturing company?

Speedometer, odometer, trip meter, gas and temp gauges will all stop working. Sometimes they'll all work, sometimes they'll all quit.the speedometer, odometer and tripmeter will all go out every time i drive the car after it's been running about 20 minutes.the gas and temp gauges will go out occasionally.

Head gasket/ instrument cluster failed.

Recall 96 v 026 000/electrical: harness front underhood wiring. Instrument panel lights/ gauges/ horn, and turn signal would go out, and vehicle stalled intermittently. The contact owns a 1996 dodge neon.the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who performed a tune-up however, the failure recurred three times. The dealer replaced the emission coil and alternator belt as a repair. The contact was later driving 40 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was not able to be restarted.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the timing belt needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was not notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

The problems that are occuring on a daily basis are: the gas gauge doesn't work, the speedometer doesn't work, the temperature gauge doesn't work, the mileage gauge doesn't work because the speedometer isn't working.sometimes while you are driving the lights(seat belt, etc.)will pop on making the dinging noise letting you know that everything is on(like when you 1st start up the car)but nothing starts working then but the temperature gauge.we never know how much fuel we have put in our car,how fast we are going,or if the car is running hot or cold.at one point we were having to get jump starts all of the time. This is an ongoing problem that i noticed you have had a recall on but this vehicle wasn't included.since it is having the same exact problems that is described in the recall i don't understand why the manufacturer will not fix the vehicle.this is rediculous there was a recall on the same type of vehicle, same year and everything but because there was only 15,000 cars done and our car could have been the 15,001 car on the assembly at the time we have to suffer and pay for the manufacturers mistakes.

Head gasket leaking oil

Recently (in october), the car stalls intermittently. I happens in low speed and when i don't add oil. There is a oil warning together with the stalling. Usually i can not start the car right then. But if i add oil immediately and keep adding oil when i turn on the key, i can turn on the car. When i release the oil press, the engine stalls again. I tried twice in the local dodge dealer. They can not fix it and can not find the real problem.

Oil sending unit on 1996 dodge neon - flawed part causing severe oil leak, blowing head gasket

Car is past warranty.i called the dealer and asked if they would split the $800-$1000 repair bill with me, since i bought the car from them less than two years ago.they refused to do this.my mechanic, jeff solomon, at the mt hope service center in rochester, says "this happens all the time on 1996 neons"

This car has had 3 transmissions and now needs another with only 56,200 miles. It has also had a starter, radiator, battery, 7 front right tires(none from nails etc.),2 head gaskets, egr valve, multifunction switch, 2 sets of brakes(which still make noise).our mechanic has told us that the 96 neon is a lemon.the brakes are made from a metal that rusts very quickly and the head gaskets are faulty andwill continue to have problems. What can i say about the transmission?? is 4 too many for a car with only 50+thousand miles?? help!!!!( dot number: tire size: 1857014 )

Thisis an used auto but it has many problems ,some were told to me by a mechanic that were recalls, there are many things wrong such as the floors fill up with water when it rains, the door hinges have rusted and broke, the brakes squeal, the motor leaks oil around the sealsthe fan doesn't kick on to cool the motor nor does the gauge register when it is hot. Are these things that the recalls take care of?

This is the same problem alot of other people are having. The car is excessively leaking oil and when it is checked it turned out to be the cylinder head gasket. My mechanic said it would be $610.70 to fix.he was kind enough to even check for recalls for me. I cannot believe with the amoint of complaints , that there has not been a recall. My mechanic even made me a copy of an advertisement in motorage magazine for fel-pro that mentions the "troublesome and expensive problem on their '95-'97 2.0l engines. Conventional head gasket designs cannot withstand the stress at the oil pressure hole, causing oil to leak"if this quote was a lie i think chrysler would have pulled the ad and filed a lawsuit. Obviously it is true, and the consumers are paying. This was my first and last chrysler. I am going back to chevy.

I took my car to a local mechanic shop and they told me that my head gasket was leaking oil and i needed to take it to a dodge dealership to get it repaired.when i called the dealership, they quoted me $700.00.i then found out that there is a problem with these and when i called again they said the plymouth is meeting customers halfway and they would pay for half.by reading all of these other complaints, there is a major defect with the head gaskets onthe neons and i don't feel that i should have to pay anything..this should be a recall...................

Head gasket failed. Yh

The c/s oil light flashed on and off. The car was immediately taken to the dealer. They diagnosed a leaking front camshaft seal. The dealer's repair invoice listed the problem as "front cam seal fell out". There was oil all over the engine and the driveway. Camshaft seals don't 'fall out' of properly designed engines. There is obviously an engine design defect here.

Engine is leaking oil.took it to dealer who said that it needs a new head gasket.when i complained about the cost (approx $500.) he said they could take care of 1/2 of it.said that the problem is a poorly manufactured gasket & they replace a lot-in fact item is on back order

Head gasket failing second time - leaking oil badly - have lost approximately 2 gallons of oil into the environment through leakage for each failure - when will an environmental recall be issued for these cars - dodge claims no record of first repair but i have receipts, do not trust dodge's reporting of the extent of this problem - www.neons.org shows up to 1/3 of these vehicles are having head gasket failures. This would indicate that 600,000 gallons of oil have already been leaked into the environment - when will something be done to end it.

My head gasket was leaking and has recently made my car start to overheat.my speedometer has also not been working since about 2 months after i bought the car and i have taken it in to be repaired approximately 5 times and it is still not working correctly.

I have a serious problem hearing that all neons (informed by dealer-coyle dodge in new albany, in) have a very common problem with the main gasket in the engine. I had a big misfortune in having my 96 neon's main gasket failed and spewed out a lot of oil and almost had myself in a serious smoke problem that i smelled the oil burning on the exhaust system near the engine and could lead to a fire! i had taken the car to coyle and discovered that there is a big

The neons' head gasket was replaced a little over a year ago, while under warranty, now needs to be replaced again and is not under warranty. I have talked to other neon owners and most have replaced a head gasket also. Also, while under warranty, i have a printed bill from the dealer that stated the job total was $436. Would like to know why this head gasket problem has not prompted a recall. I put 3-4 qts of oil in a week. Can not afford to get ot fixed now. Shouldn't have to after 27,000 mls. I'll never buy dodge again.

Leaking head gasket found while being tuned -up at the lube center plus, frederick, md.

This seem to be something that the dodge company should recall due to amount of head gasket problems reported from others like me.

They had to add oil to vehicle constantly, and there wouldbe puddle of oil undervehicle.this was as a result of an oil leak, had part replaced, problem reoccurred..contacted dealer.

Engine head gasket has failed, leaking large amounts of oil into the posterior part of the engine. Through research have found this is a common problem with the neon, and at times has resulted inengine fires. This poses a significant safety risk and i am wondering why there has not been a recall. Engine head gasketis leaking oil. Consumer contacted dealer.

I have heard recently that enginehead gasket failure is very common with the dodge neons as well as other chrysler cars. I noticed my car was leaking last week sometime, and didn't realize it was coming from teh head gasket. It does not make sense to me that so many of teh dodge neons are having this problem if dodge made a good product. If they know that all of these cars are having this problem and there is rumor of a secret warranty out there if you raise enough fuss, doesn't it seem fair, and lawful that chrysler should issue a recall on the cars and fix teh head gaskets on their products before further trouble is caused. If i was oblivious to teh leak couldn't i have caused further damage that could have been prevented had chrysler not cut corners and made a cheap gasket to begin with? is it my fault that when i purchased the car i was not informed that eventually i would have to spend close to a thousand dollars to fix my car because chrysler didn't feel like making a strong head gasket, and wanted to save a little money. I feel as if i am being screwed here, and i feel that i should be reimbursed. How many people must complain before chrysler issuses a recall. A recall that is obviously necessary.

I have had problems with the head gasket in my 1996 neon three times.the first time it was covered under warranty.the second time i had to take it to a shop and have it repaired costing me $450.both times the car was under 50,000 miles.now my car has 78,000 and the gasket has failed again.i have contacted chrysler about the problem and they are well aware of it.i have found a web site, neonheadgaskets.org, and seen that several people have had help from chrysler, chrysler paying $500 and thecustomer paying $100.but the decision is up to the service manager and the district manager. It reallyupsets me that a recall has not been called.now they have even replaced the old gasket with an updated new one, which has not been put on my car yet.they're not sure if that will even work.please make chrysler take responsibility for their mistake.it is not my fault the gasket is blowing.

The consumer stated that the gasket failed.

Due to an oil leak the engine head gaskets have blown out. Dealer has been contacted.

I had the head gasket oil leak repaired at an independent mechanic's shop (a certified mechanic) after the several dealers were booked solid. I couldn't wait to have the repair done two weeks later. Now, only a year after the repair was done, the same repair needs done again. From what several dealers have told me, many neons develop this head gasket leak and need repair. My car was only two and 1/2 years old when the head gasket went. I don't understand why chrysler has not recalled the cars to have it fixed. It has been very costly to me. I again have to have the repair done next wednesday.

I bought this car used in oct. 97 with approximately 19k miles on it. The head gasket failed with the car just barely under the warranty by mileage, but i had to fight hard with the dealer to have them cover the repair work.they eventually repaired it and gave another 1 year/12k mile warranty on the repair.within that time frame the head gasket failed again.the dealer repaired it under warranty, but this time would not warranty the work or the part.that's a sham!i'm getting rid of this peice of junk!

I have had my car in for repair 4 times in 3 yrs. First the spark plugs were bad, had to be replace. Second the wires melted together in my steering wheel column, 4rd the fueld sensor went out in fuel pump had to have the fuel pump replaced. Ask warrenty company what most common problem with the dodge neon was they said the head gasket blowing, now i guess it's my turn for that i took to dealer today for oil leak , they said head gasket blown, need to tear down engine to make sure nothing else is bad ( cracked block / head) seems like an awful lot of problems for a car that's not that old and has been maintained, very dissapointed in vehicle

Oil leak due to headgasket problem.this is a huge problem with dodge neons. Chrysler finally put out a new headgasket in the 1999 models. But what about all of us with cars before 1999?this is a manufacturer defect and chrystler knows it. They are replacing the headgasket for some owners at little cost. But others (like me) are told there is no assistance given. Please let me know if there's anything nhtsa is doing. Thanks.

Noticed oil leaking on driveway. We took it to the dealerwho informed us that the head gasket needed replacement. Contacted dodge they said we had to get inspected which is $120. Then if it is the head gasket they will only pay a percentage of the cost and they would not tell us what percentage i just want to know what steps to take to get this taken care off. Thank you.

The headgasket and camshaft seal failed at 37687 miles which is clearly premature . The estimated repairs plus the necessary towing charge were in excess of $600 . After a complaint by telephone the warranty was extended by daimler chrysler to cover the full amount. I am filing this complaint not for my own benefit ,since my cost of repair was covered , but to provide documentation for an investigation of this problem.

Had an oil leak, mechanic said i had to replace the head gasket. It is obvious there should be a recall.

Customer states head gasket blew 3 times, dealership would not repair under warranty.

At 11,000 miles i had to have the head gasket replaced.this seems like something that should not have happened with that few miles on the engine.it would seem that the gasket is faulty.i would like to see a recall issued.

There was oil leaking from underneathvehicle.also there was a loud noise in rear of wheel.dealershipis aware of problem.

Chrysler was contacted in my case and chose to do nothing about it, unfortunately i am not the only owner of a neon that has had problems with the headgasket and the speedometer.obviously something needs to be done about them.

Engine head gasket oil leak. Multiple garagemen indicate majority of neons have same problem.

Consumer stated the engine head gasket started to leak in june 2001 to the point where it now needs to be replaced..

The head gasket leaked oil, so had to be replaced.what i am angry about is chrysler knew that the orginal part was faulty, hence they re-designed the placement part.however, they are making their customers pay for their mistake, which i think is wrong.i have recently seen where ford is reimbursing their customers for the same problem (faulty head gasket).why wouldn't chrysler do the same thing to keep their customers happy?

Dodge neon manufactured in 1996/as far as i know thehead gasket has had to be replaced three times/ originally when built (unless previous owner had same problem) and twice by me (9/3/97 and 10/18/2000) now don't you find that absurd....i formally owned a dodge daytona for ten years...had manyother problems but it never blew a head gasket.. Ihave an oldsmoblile that has 1400000 miles on it..never needed a head gasket....had this head gasket blown out on a major highway next week on theway to maryland, the engine could seize and couldhavecaused a major accident with serious results ..not to mention the cost ofrepairing a "cracked block"this head gasket is a major safety hazard as far a driving is concerned and i find it unbelievable thatcrysler is allowing this serious matter to continue//i feel that reimbursement for the replacement of these two head gaskets should be sent to me immediately...crysler had my business for longenough...i feel that someone shoulddo something to help all of the neon owners that are havingthe same problem but can not get anyone to listenor as usual ...the small guy is out of luck...this financial burden is just too much at this time...thank god my granddaughter was not in thecar and a serious problem occurred....crysler should be held responsible now and toalldodge neon owners....picketing dealerships comes to mind....

The contact owns a 1996 dodge neon. The contact stated that all braking function was lost while driving at an unknown speed. She stated that inorder to stop the vehicle she had to engage the emergency brake. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop who diagnosed that the rotors, brake pads, shoes, rear brake drums, and two rear flex lines needed to be replaced. My vehicle was out of warranty at this time.the head gasket failed a second time with 46,958 miles on the vehicle.this repair was done at dartmouth dodge, 225 state rd., north dartmouth, ma.02747, since it was closer to my home, and they were not in business at the time that i purchased the vehicle.chrysler gave me a $300.00 credit towards the repair of the head gasket.i strongly feel that i should be reimbursed for this repair since it was replaced under warranty the first time, and it broke again approximately 26,000 later.apparently, there has been a problem with head gaskets for this vehicle.i also feel that a recall campaign should be instituted to repair all these vehicles since it is a common problem with them.

Ongoingoil leakage; vehicle taken to anindependent repair shop, and wasinformed there wasa blown head gasket. Dealer repaired the vehicle. *ml

Whenever the brakes were applied, they would squeak. Had noticed the rotors were rusting out. Had taken vehicle to dealer & told would not repair the rotors due to state using salt on the road. Also, the head gaskets had blown & started to leak a lot of oil.

Major oil leak. I took the car to two mechnics, who told me the head gasket needed replaced. I spoke to the local dealer and was told that the car was out of warranty, and that the job would cost over $700. I later found out that this is a comon problem and the replacement part is not the same as the original because of some defect. Chrysler still does not acknowlege a problem?

I own a 1996 dodge neon and recently my service engine light came on.my husband checked my oil and anti-freeze and noticed there was oil in the radiator.he knew right away that the head gasket was gone.we went to the dealer to purchase a head gasket and the salesman told us that neon's were known for this problem that the original head gasket that were installed at the plant weren't think enough.my husband asked him why we should replace this and not the dealer.our area part stores can't keep up with stocking head gaskets for these cars.why should we pay for this?

Cracked engine head gasket.

We have replaced head gasket twice and one was w/ there redesigned head gasket.now it is starting to go out for a third time.at 500 dollars a repair this is highway robbery.i do regualarly scheduled maintence and services and most of my miles are highway miles.alot of people are expeirencing head gasket failures on the neons and for someone who gets a loan (that he can barly afford) for a neon, shouldn't be worried about multiple head gasket repairs.it is obviously a manufactures default.the dealer ship that repaired my head gasket (both of them, they replaced them twice) has acknowledged that the neons do have this problem.he has replaced several head gaskets.i'm really getting tired of this.i'm mean really, what kind of new car needs three head gaskets replaced in two years.i'll never by another neon again, and i'm not recommending them to anyone either.thanks... Jeremy

I learned of my head gasket problem about a week ago, i was shocked because my car is only five years old, i just paid it off, and the warranty expired not even two months ago. I have an appointment to take it back to the dealer next week, that was the soonest i could get. I expect them to cover it 100% especially after finding your website and reading about how many other people had the same problem w/ their 1996 neon. I was curious as to if anyone has taken legal action in this matter?ak

Dodge neon enginehead gaskets are known to leak - manufacturer will not reimburse owners for repair of a known defect. My cost was $1004.

Vehicle has had to have a new transmission, head gasket, spark plugs and wires, and the fuel gauge stopped functioning.all before 60,000miles.

Valve cover gaskets have failed twice since 1998 and currently needing to have the problem fixed again. Also, the transmission failed just after warranty term.dodge knows of oil leak problems and have made no efforts to rectify.

While driving on the highway turned off a side road heard a loud noise. Got out of vehicle and checked the tires and the tires were fine.got the vehicle home.contacted the dealer. Dealer stated vehiclewas not under warranty. Took it to a neighbor who is a mechanic, and told consumer that the part that broke was an engine mountbolt.

While driving vehicle overheated. Vehicle had to be towed to the dealership, where the engine head gasket was found blown. Vehicle was repaired under warranty. Please provide any further information.

We would like to know if there has been any recall problems with the 1996 dodge neon due to head gasket problems.

Head gasket failure.

Head gasket was replaced at 35,000 miles and again at 71,000 miles due to poor design.

Bad defect of head gasket seal and door panel/control panel.

I have become aware of this "head gasket" problem through dodge neon message boards after purchasing the vehicle and having the gasket replaced for $500.55 parts and labor.i hope this problem doesn't occur as often as all the inquiries suggested.perhaps you should recall the line of vehicles, right the wrongs, or reimburse buyers of your products the expences that occur but shouldn't.please contact me by phone or mail to discuss this problem.thank you for your time.

I have had multiple problems on a 96 neon. I think around 35,000 miles (10/29/98) that the head gasket blew.i took it to be fixed at a cost of $100 covered under warranty. Again at 50,000 + miles (4/29/99) we had to take it in again for a blown head gasket.in addition, i think this was the time that we had to replace some kind of front oil seal.we also had them try to fix the speed gauge that had started acting strange. When the speed gauge acted up so did all the other lights on the dash come on for no reason.they replaced the cable but we soon found out that it didn't help. This was at a cost of $114.58 covered under warranty.at 75,000 (12/3/99) back again for some oil seal around the spark plugs and the changing spark plugs etc. Mostly under warranty at a total cost to me of $134.41.this did not fix the problem so i took it back for more charges of $197.43. I was also told that i needed to replace something in the dash to keep the warranty good so that the tachometer would still work.i told them to get the parts ordered because they told me it would be more than five days to get this done and my warranty only covers a rental for 5 days.i have not heard back from them.two days ago, i changed the oil and it was leaking from the front seal (or it seems to me).yesterday the service eng. Light comes on.i will be contacting bob allen chrysler in danville monday to see what they will do.my point is that chrysler needs to help all of us that have problems with the head gasket.one of the service workers told me that they worked on way to many of the neons for head gaskets.i have also had the electrical problems with the dash and the car seat does not lock into place very well when you adjust it.

I have heard that there is a major problem with head gaskets in the dodge neons. And that dodge has redesigned them.what about those of us who are stuck with the bad gaskets?i have talked with every dodge dealer within a 100 mile radius as well as a few mechanic shops.a couple of them told me that dodge was thinking about doing a recall on the head gaskets. I want to know why i should have to pay 500-800 dollars for something that dodge new was going to happen sooner or later.every dealer i have spoken with has said they have had to replace alot of head gaskets on the neons.please advise me if dodge is going to do a recall or not.thank you for your attention to this matter.

Vehicle got hot and has developed an oil leak, took to dealer , and they said it wasengine head gasket problem, that may have damagedengine.

Head gasket warped diagnosed at dealer when was having another repair, wiring harness short caused smoke to fill car while driving had it towed to dealer.

I understand that there is a rather high number cars on the road that have or have had this issue. This blown head gasket allows engine oil to leakout of the engine down the back of the engine this heated old could ignite and cause a "under hood fire"... I contacted chrysler, theblock and on to the exhaust manifold. It looks like under the right conditions y seem unconcerned.old

Being repaired at a dealership. They don't seem to think there is a problem nation wide with the gaskets.

Chronic oil leak due to head gasket failure, chronic clunking in right front either steering or suspension problem which after multiple trips for service remains uncorrected.

Defective engine head gasket broke whichcaused oil to leak ontoengine compartment and could ruin engine compartment.common problem.dodge won't assist consumer becausehe went to independent dealer.please provide further information.

I own a 1996 dodge neon and recently my engine check light came on.my husband checked my oil and anti-freeze and noticed there was oil in the radiator.he knew right away that the head gasket was gone.we went to the dealer to purchase a head gasket and the salesman told us that neon's were known for this problem that the original head gasket that were installed at the plant weren't think enough.my husband asked him why we should replace this and not the dealer.our area part stores can't keep up with stocking head gaskets for these cars.why should we pay for this?

The dodge neon's 2.0 l engine has an apparant manufacturer's defect in the head gasket assembly. The car leaks oil. Our particular car received dealer service once already for the head gasket defect but the oil leak persists. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer a second time the dealer said they found no apparant leak. Close after that our factory warranty expired. Our car now leaks almost a quart of oil every day.this problem is not one isolated to just our particular vehicle. There have been many cases of failed head gaskets recorded and shared by neon owners. According to a user website "neons.org" 32% of all neon owners have already had to replace the defecive part within 30,000 miles of the vehicle's life; most at their own cost. Please document and address this problem that plagues neon owners who are just trying to buy a reliable little car. Thank you.

Was driving vehicle & experienced a bad engine head gasket leakage. Had noticed an odor of bad oil burning. Took to mechanic first time & entire head gaskets was defective & needed replacing. Hadengine head gaskets replaced & the leakage problem has reappeared.

The head gaskets had to be replaced, alot of people have the same problem.the speedometrs come on and go off all the time.if you hit a bump or hit the dash they might start workin agiain.that includes the gas gauege.the car jerks while driving.it dies when making a turn or at a stop sign.it cuts in and out.auto shop is trying to pin point the problem. Not real sure whats wrongi replaced the mgr valves that didn t help.might have to replace fuel pump, but not sure if that will solve the problem.car is justa bad vehicle t o have gotten.a lot of other peole are havingthe same problems

Brakes squeaky from the date of purchase, egr valve was replaced at 39,000 miles. Enginehead gasket leaks at only 42,000 miles(est cost of all repairs $800)egr valve already paid for, wanting assistance from chrysler for head gasket.

There was an oil leakage around head gasket.the dealer told me that chrysler jeep's have the same problems and are being recalled. The dodge dealer told me i have to pay for it.my warranty was expired, and the dealer said chrysler won't pay for neons.this is a defect not something i did to the car.i have never had an accident.i hope this helps, because i can't afford to fix it.

Head gasketwasleaking oil.a private mechanic has diagnosedproblem, and stated thatengine was going tobe replaced.a cause for this defect has not been determined.please provide any additional information/attachments.

Due to a defective enginehead gasket there is a oil leak comingfrom the gasket and leaking ontoexhaust manifold which may cause a fire.dealer is aware of problem, but didnot receive enough complaints to warrent a recall. Parts unavailable due to backorders.

At 53000 i noticed oil leaking.after taking it to a mechanic, i was told it was the head gasket.my mechanic stated that he has worked on several neons that have had the same problem.he said the former neon owners took the car back to the dealership and had it fixed for $200 - $250, as opposed to a more hefty charge.i'm not sure how a head gasket can malfunction on a car with only 53000 miles......something is not right with this story.also, my rear break shoes (lining) suddenly gave out...only two months after replacing them.

Engine head gaskets have blownout three times. Please provide further details.

Engine gasket have been replaced three times inpast 2 years. It needs to be replaced again.

Loss of oil and white smoke coming fromtail pipe. Vehicle taken to dealer, and informed consumer of a blown head gasket which was not covered under arecall. Consumer states she has checked with several mechanics and was told head gasket was recalled.

Engine head gasket blew out. As the result of head gasket failure, oil mixed with the coolant.the dealer cleaned the radiator and fixed the head gasket.

Within a one week period engine head gasket was replaced twice because of leakage. The problem has been reported to the dealer.enginehead gasket has been replaced at owner's expense.please provide any further information.

Oil leaked from failed head gasket or cracked head, exhaust leak from head or manifold. Speedometer dial stop working. The car only has 30000 miles on it. My repair man wants $500.00 just to tear down the engine to see if it is the gasket or a cracked head, and thats just the labor and not including parts. This is a safty problem that should be cause for a recall. How many complaintsor lives will it take before nhtsa takes action aganist this car manufacturing company?

Vehicle loses oil which come down the back of the block.consumer has taken vehicle continuously to the dealer for the same problem, in which it has not been remedied as of yet. Please provide any further information.

Engine head gasket cracked, causing oil to leak onto the engine block. Dealer has been notified.

Vehicle is constantly leaking oil.dealer has advisedconsumer that there was a problem with crankshaft rear main oil field which was not a part of the previous recall.

My vehicle was purchased in feb. 1996.within one year it had been recalled and serviced for several reasons.the first incident was the fuel pump module.the amount of gas on the reading revealed 1/4 of the tank still full, however the tank was actually empty.also within that year i began noticing water in the back seat and in the spare wheelwell, due to a leak in the rear window seal.six months later the same vehicle began leaking oil and when serviced it was found to be a head gasket leak.the gasket and it's components were replaced under warranty.in addition to other recalls the vehicle has been serviced regularly.however, within the four years this car has been revealing symptoms that are unbelievable for such short amount of time.it has currently been diagnosed with another faulty head gasket.the vehicle is beyond the three year warranty and is expressing the same symptoms that it has had in the first year.i am searching for answers to remedy this problem or warranties that may apply.

Severe engine head gasket leak occurred quickly.contacts with chrysler denials that a problem exists.

The head gasket on my dodge neon needed to be replaced a second time at only 76,000 miles.(conveniently out of warranty). I know several other people that have had this same problem. Dodge has been contacted but no reply has been given.

1996 dodge neon with a little over 70,000 miles on it.car is leaking oil..according to mechanic, the head gasket needs to be replaced at a cost of $700-$800.mechanic indicated that this is a very common problem with the neon.i would like to know if there is a recall on this issue.if not, is there any steps i can take to have this cost paid by dodge? ts

3rd time head gasket has failed. White smoke burning from under hood.

Premature failure of engine head gasket.

Twice the head gasket on this car has blown.the first time the car was at 35,000 miles, just short of the warranty so it was replaced at no cost.the second time the head gasket blew was just 1 1/2 years later and i was quoted between $800-$1,500 to have it repaired again.chrystler corporation is fully aware that this is a common problem with this make and model.i called a number of dealers when trying to get this car fixed and every dealer said this is a very common problem.more than half the dealers recommended i call chrystler corporation to get assistance with the cost.after raising enough hell with chrystler and the dealership, i was able to get it repaired.i do not want to go through this every year and a half.and i should not have to...this is a major, expensive repair and that company should have enough confidence in their product to warranty it.

Headgasket has blownout, causing oil leakage. Manufacturer has been notified.

Oil seals fail causing an oil leak, valve cover gasket failed.

Oil leak, head gasket. This is a known problem with all of the vehicles manufactured for that year.

Oil leak first documented by dealer at 30404 mi. Problem continued to worsen until headgasket had to be replaced on 3/4/02 at 36794 mi.i have heard and read about numerous complaints about blown headgaskets on the neon and stratus and felt i should go on record with my complaint.i have documentation for all service done on my vehicle. Thank you.

Head gaskets have prematurally blown. Out.dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

First head gasket failure occurred at less than 36,000 miles; covered on warranty. Dodge refuses to cover second failure and claims "no known problems" with head gasket longevity when called. Good maintenance record on vehicle; av. 15-16k miles/year use.

The head gasket leaks, with a cold engine radiator cap off fluid will be forced out like old faithful. Oil leaking from back of the engine on the driver side. I found out this isn't just a one car problem. I have 14 pages of people with the same problem. I also have 15 service bulletins reporting the same thing. It seems it should be a recall. Plus i shouldn't have to pay anything for engineering faults.

E98012;defective head gasket had a leak, causing the oil to leak, resulting in an underhood fire.dealer replaced the head gasket.dealer cannot determine the problem.

Head gasket replaced due to an oil leak.

Engine leaks oil andruns rough. Consumer had to add 2 1/2 quarts of oil toengine less than 1600 miles.gasket has failed twice once at 36,000 miles and 83,000 miles.currently, at 110,000 miles was failing again.

Head gasket failures began on this vehiche at approximately 20,000 mi and continue.

Apparently, the head gasket situation is a manufacturer's defect.at 66k miles, i cannot understand why i now have to replace the entire fan unit becuase "it is worn out."the manufacturer's maintenance book has no mention of such replacement at 66k--i think that had i been on a major highway and this would have happened, there could have been unnecessary injuries due to unexpected "cheaply" made parts.-- never again will i buy a chrysler/dodge car.

Sudden complete loss of oil due to head gasket failure.

Oil leaks from the engine head gaskets every eight months. Dealer contacted and didrepairs. Problem still exisits.also, car stalls while driving, due to a problem with the computer.*ml

Defective design of the engine head gasket causedcoolant to leak through the valve cover which could spray into the engine compartment, andstart a fire.dealer saidhead gasket and valve cover needed to be replaced.please provide further information.

Have read complaints on head gaskets, taking car to dealership tomorrow to have ours replaced, it has been leaking into the radiator.time for a recall!!

Had to replace the head gasket at about 60,000miles. I see lots of other people are having the same complaint. When will there be a recall? this same engine is used in a number of chrysler cars and the problem is happening to those owners also. Help us out.

Would like to add my (now) 2 experiences to the mix of many, in regards to head gasket problems with the 1996 dodge neon line of vehicles. This seems to be a very common problem, and chrysler has done nothing to ease the costs of this problem for hundreds of thousands of customers. I have replaced the head gasket (under extended warranty) twice now. The first time the blown head gasket caused enough damage that the entire engine head had to be replaced the first time. As i was writing this, i received a call from the 5-star chrysler dealership/service shop who is doing the work for a second time now (the car was also purchased there), and found out i will be without the car for another week because this time the damage is requiring replacement of the entire engine due to warping. Even though this is covered by extended warranty, i have to pay $100 about every 20,000 miles to have this problem fixed. I am told chrysler is on their 6th revision of this gasket, but no recall or consumer warning has been made public. Searching through the internet, it is staggeringly easy to find many others who are having this same problem. This costs me money and the inconvenience of being without one of my vehicles for a known problem.

I purchased a 1996 dodge neon from bobb chevrolet on 12/28/99. The sales folks were tim and wendy ryan. I paid $6343.85 for the car.the serial number of the car is [xxx] when i purchased the car i asked tim ryan 2 questions: (1) would he have the head gasket checked and (2) why was the transmission slipping. Byers fixed the head gasket and he said that slipping transmission was a chrysler thing. The head gasket was leaking all through the spring and summer of 2000. So on 9/8/2000, the head gasket was replaced at byers. It was byers invoice [xxx]. At this time, i asked if the head was resurfaced and checked for cracks along if the head bolts were replaced. I was told that if byers did this and was told no. I took away from this that this work would be too expensive and that was why is wasnt done. I was told yesterday, 1/14/04 that i had a possible head gasket leak again. So i went back to byers for help. Treat said today that chrysler wont cover this work under warranty. Questions:1.why did the head gasket leak after 37,000 miles?2.if the head was resurfaced and checked for cracks and head bolts replaced as i asked for in 2000, would i will have the problems in 2004.3. How many other dodge neons have bad head gaskets and have to be replaced3 times in 44000 miles.4. When the work was done on the head gasket in 1/2000 and 9/2000, what work was done exactly? were the heads taken out and check by defects. I need to know since i now think that the head gasket problem is causing problems with the cooling system, ie the anti-freeze is leaking. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Head gasket was first replaced about 2 years ago, i am having it replaced for the 2nd time now.

Car stalls while driving at any speed not at any set time or distance.fuel filter, fuel pump, and computer module replaced and was sent to the dodge dealer for repairs and two weeks of testing.this problem happens at any fuel level from full to an eighth of a tank and the same gas station was used for all cars i own so the bad gas theory is not the problem.

I normally take my car to valvoline for oil changes.the last couple of time i had my oil changed, i would have to take it back to valvoline because the "oil light" onthe dashboard would start flashing. The service men at valvoline would check and usually top of the oil and i would have no mor problems.however, i took mycar for an oil change about june or july of this year.about a week, maybe 2 weeks after i had the oil change, the oil light started flashing again.i took my car to the nearest gas station and had 2 quarts put in.i couldn't understand why this was happening.again, about a week later , my oil light started flashing again.i took my car to another gas station and had more oil put in.i did this about 3 or 4 times before i finally took my car back to valvoline to check.after they checked my car, they told me i would have to take it to the dealer because there is a oil leak behind the motor.the car dealer would have to fix it.they said it needed some kind of "bracket"and that a lot of chrysler/dodge cars that come into their station have this same problem.i called my dealer, ross park dodge, explained the situation to them.they suggested i bring the car in so that they can check it over.i asked for my own information, what the cost for repair/replace would be.the service representative told me that it could cost $700more/or less depending on the damage.he also told me that the oil leakage was not due to normal wear and tear of the car.i asked himwhy i would be responsible for the repair, etc., if the damage was not due to normal wear and tear of the car?he asked if i was still under warranty or extended warrantey to which i replied "no".

At 62,000 miles speedometer has malfunctioned and did not register speed levels, cause unknown.please give any further details.

Odometer failure occurred twice, the last time was in feb of 99.

Driver was distracted by failed speedometer needle as it was swingling wildly.distraction caused accident.

Vehicle stalls/ speedometer andgas gauge work intermittently.

While driving at normal highway speeds speedometer starts acting erratically.the needle wave back and forth between 0 and the present speed.after about 20 seconds the needle goes to zero and remains there.in addition to having no idea what your speed is the odometer isdisabled .on the most recent failure turning the car off ,while in a resturant for 45 minutes seemed to clear up the problem.upon resuming our trip we had the speedometer and odometer working.

While in parking lot, entering a parking space, transmission siezed and the casing blew to pieces.pictures are online at www.erols.com/landspeeder for a look-see.the diff. Pin is visible in one picture, it's bent.

Head gasket is a known issue at chrysler, and should have been rectified by recall.transmission also had to be replaced.electrical problems becuase because of poor design.chrysler did not help becuase of mileage and used car.what can a 19 yr old afford other than a used car?

Transmission malfunctioned. In addition, premature wear of front brake pads/rotors/headlights failed/electrical short due to severed wires/winshield washer bottle had hole in it and installed horn.

Purchased new, had it for two months, when driving in heavy rainthe transmission slipped, had to drive under 40 mph . Please describe .

Transmission failed.

Vehicle was difficult to get in reverse.this was worse when 20 to 85 degrees outside.vehicle would not shift into drive until 55-60 mph, but 1 and 2 were okay.i had the vehicle repaired at local chicago non-selling dodge dealer at my cost of $1,200.the dealer advised front pump seal failed causing entire transmission to overheat and fail.the service writer advised this is a common failure with these vehicles.reviewing web sites (including this one) i see similar complaints for this exact set of symptons.i have recently requested reimbursement from dodge, but they have not had a chance to respond yet.

Ongoing problem with a 2.0l engine head gasket failure. From march of 1996 to present, vehicle hasexperienced replacement of 2 head gaskets, egr valve with eet, oil pressure sensor/switch, and transmission. *ml

Transmission shifts from 1 to 2 to 1 to 2, etc., at 50 mph when the gas pedal is pushed all the way to the floor.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Transmission rebuilt by amoco said almost all parts were "chewed up" now 1 yr later slips going into 1st and has no reversethe head has been replaced 2 times and has gone againsppedometer stays on 0

I have the exact same problem twice.the first one was at 29000 miles andtransmission was overhauled andoxygene sensor was replaced.then, at 64000 miles the exact same thing happened.talked toexteneded warranty company and they said the problems are not realated.talked todealership, and they said that the problems were "peculiar".called diamler-chrysler, and they said that the two systems were not related.but the problems were exactly the same both times.

Water leak from the trunk to rear floor boards caused corrosion.also, signal light failed to go off. Consumer states the vehicle had been involved in several accidents befor e purchase.

The defective right brake caliper "sticking, " causing the calipers to wear out andvehicle to sway to right side.almost caused an accident. Also while driving over a bump the defective suspension, caused the vehicle to hit the ground.vehicle also experiencedtransmission problem.dealer cannot determine problem.

Head gasket was first replaced under warranty with 20,901 miles on the vehicle.the transmission let go with 35,654 miles on the vehicle.

The vehicle slips in and out of gear when in motion.has always been difficult to engage reverse gear to move car in morning.engine transmission specialists cannot detect problem but confirm that it exists.

Transmission failed while driving.*mjs

Transmission slipping. Dealer calling us liars when reported.have returned to dealer 4 times for same problem. Problem still exists.

Vehicle has had to have a new transmission, head gasket, spark plugs and wires, and the fuel gauge stopped functioning.all before 60,000miles.

The defective automatic transmission in this vehicle causes the engine to stop when decelerating. The defective transmission is a common problem for this years model according to local transmission shops. Also the transmission was changed for the next years model.

Vehicle would start up, but wouldn't kick over to run.consumer has replaced transmission and sensors to rectifyproblem.

Oil leak is due to a gasket; transmission went out(could not use reverse until car was on 20 minutes or more), paint has been peeling for about 6 months now, numerous sets of brakes replaced

The contact was servicing a 1996 dodge neon. The vehicle was parked out front of an independent repair shop with the engine turned on when the shifter independently shifted out of park and into reverse. Brake problems;when applyingbrakes they don't hold properly, vehicle sounds likes it isdragging.

I own a 1996 dodge neon. I took my car in to have the speed sensor fixed on it due to that is the code that came up on the check engine light. After the sensor was replaced the wiring harness under the hood fried 3 feet of it. The mechanic fixed the three feet of wiring and every thing was in working order. I took my car to moses lake which is approximately 100 miles from my house upon arriving. My neon stopped working. I had to have it towed from moses lake to altons tire shop in air way heights because i could not afford to tow it to dishman dodge on srpauge. Ihave pulled up the recall information on my car and because my vin was not included in the mass numbers it is not under warranty. I truly feel t hat it should be because the harness is fired due to the same reasons.

First, when it is cold, my brakes do not work.at first they do not go to the ground and the car takes a long time to come to a stop.fortunately this has only occured when car is started or when it is going less than 5mph.independent mechanic looking at it now.has replaced some brakes pads and services the brakes.water was found in a valve for the power assisted brakes, but the problem still occurs.this mechanic believes water is getting into the brake line but is unsure as to how.the problem does not occur every time i drive it so just when it seems to be okay the brakes fail again.another problem is the windows.even when the defrosters and defoggers are on, the side windows never defog, i need to constantly turn on rear refrost (every 5 min or so) so that i can see out of it.this is a new problem this winter.i cannot see out passenger or driver side window while driving.a third problem is the passenger side window, this is not a new problem .even when the window is all the way up wind howls in the window.you can see a gap and if it is raining water comes in.finally the last problem is also not a new problem.i does not seem to be related to the last problem because it occurred long before that problem.after it rains, water collects in the well between the inside an outside of the door (mostly on passenger side, but occasionally on drivers side)consequently when i open the door a puddle of water falls out on my feet.in the winter the water in the will freezes making it difficult ot open the door.i informed the dealer of this problem when it first occured and they informed me that it occured with all of the cars and that it was just a design flaw and they could do nothing about it.i left it at that although it bothered me.i am complaining now because so many things seem to be going wrong with the car.

Both the master cylinder and the power brake booster have been replaced.

Brakes went out on vehicle while braking.vacuum booster was replaced which did not correct problem. Also brake rotors was replaced, but problem remains.

Brake failure, power booster unit has water in the line, causing loss of brakes, in forrepairstill have same problem, brake pedal is real hard, has to use the emergency pedal to stop the vehicle.

The brake pedal becomes rock hard and there is no braking ability. After a couple of miles the pedal becomes soft and goes to the floor and the brakes lock up.master cylinder and power booster have been replaced, problem still exists.

Steering difficulty caused loss of control, resulting in an accident.

When it is wet outside vehicle loses all steering. Vehicle loses all power steering and the driver has to use both hands to steer the vehicle. Dealer does not have a clue on the problem concerning the steering.

Everytime that it rains the steering locks up, and driver loses steering completely.the dealership will not fix.

While driving vehicle through puddle of water loses control of vehicle. Owner cannot steer left or right.vehicle has not been taken to dealers.

While traveling on inclement weather the steering wheel will lock up.unabling him to turn the dealership is aware of the problem.nlm

Steering wheel lock up on highway.

When driving at 20 mph the steering wheel was coming off the steering column, causingthevehicle topull over and bring the vehicle to a stop.

In may my steering column was replaced.it was again looked at in november of 1996.now, my steering column has once again failed.it takes 10 turns of my wheel to turn from one extreme to the other. Also,my head gasket, at 45000 miles started to leak.this shouldn't happen to a car 3 years old.

Consumer was involved in a rea rendcollision, seat belt failed to wotk properly and driver's head hit steering wheel, and is currently suffering from2 herniated discs. 3 year daughter wa sina car seat in the rear. Car seat moved out of place because seat belt failed to work properly. Also, when making any left or right turns steering column sounds a sif it is going to pop out.

Could steer to left but could not get up the ravine, tried to turn right to avoid a utility pole ahead but steering wheel would not turn right, couldn't get back to theravine, attempted to turn right, steering wheel locked up and vehicle went into a utility pole, resulting in an injury.

Going 30mph when the steering wheel had no response. Had heard a pop. Had vehicle towed. Mechanic could not locate problem. Too many broken parts.

Whenever drivings vehicle under wet conditions the power steering will stop working, when turning the wheel, it doesn't return as it should. After drying it will begin working correctly. The dealer has been contacted.

Power steering pulley bent.

The consumer had to use excessive force to turnthe steering wheel in any direction, the power steering fluid was inspected and was determined to be adequate.

While making a left turn while driving very slowy, car continued to go striaght, causingright front tire to hitcurb.vehicle was towed to the dealership. The steering spindle and knuckle assembly was replaced at the dealers.

Vehicle experiences problems with pulling and noise in the front end, recall repairs were performed on the wheel bearings and the steering knuckles, consumer was not informed of the recall notices prior to incidents.

Noise while turning steering wheel due to failure of the knuckles.

Engine gaskets and seals and rack and pinionsteering failed.

Would like to know why this head gasket problem has not prompted a recall. I put 3-4 qts of oil in a week. Can not afford to get ot fixed now. Shouldn't have to after 27,000 mls. I'll never buy dodge again.

The defective automatic transmission in this vehicle causes the engine to stop when decelerating. The defective transmission is a common problem for this years model according to local transmission shops. Also the transmission was changed for the next years model.

Vehicle was making a crunching noise, and was uncontrollable at high speeds. This was due to a faulty rack and pinion steering. Dealer has not been able to repair vehicle.

Peeling paint from dodge 1996 neon. Large flakes fall off while driving, or simply parked.

My 1996 dodge neonhad two head gasket failures to date now. The first was repaired 29,000 miles ago, and now, at 89,000 miles, ihad another head gasket fail on me. The car is also peeling paint excessively. Instead of under ten years old, the car looks over twenty years old!

Paint peeled of the entire roof of the car and is starting to peel on the trunk.

While driving, flakes of paint were peeling of the vehicle.

When there is a rain stormtwo inches of rain comesinside ofvehicle.

The rear bumper is cracked and crooked. Dealer has not seen.

Bad defect of head gasket seal and door panel/control panel.

There are so many things wrong with this car.thankfully, none of them mechanical, but costly still.the door panels on my 2 door keep on getting disconnected from the door frame due to substandard (in my book anyway) anchors between the door frame and the panels.this has happened numerous times on the drivers side, and once on the passengers side.it makes it very difficult getting in and out of the car.i get the issue fixed, and within an few months it's broken again.the antenna broke off at the base and flew off somewhere on the highway this winter (2004).the paint is peeling off.the trunk leaks.some of the outside trim pieces fell off for some unknown reason.the fuel tank door broke off for no apparent reason one day while i was filling the tank. The driver's side door no longer shuts right.it has to be lifted and slammed.the driver's side window dosen't work correctly, (it fell out once) even after i had it fixed and the regulator replaced. I expect normal wear and tear on the engine, transmission, etc., but this is silly.i am afraid to keep the car, who know's what will fall off next, landing in some unknown place on i-95!i won't be buying another neon.not because i have had serious issues of unreliability, but because things fall off.

Front passenger door panel was slipping off, causing the passenger to get trapped in the vehicle. The panel was under warranties, but the dealer never received the parts. This problem caused the door panel to stick and lock the passenger inside the car.

Getting out of vehicle, window was down, shut driver's side door and it exploded/shattered; took to dealer for repairs, was informed that it should not have happened.

The paint peeled off the entire roof in a period of one or two days.the weather was fair and the car was not exposed to any substances that might be damaging to the paint.now the sides of the car are beginning to peel as well (7/2003).i have seen many other neon's of the same color (bright purple-blue) with paint peeling off in huge chunks.

In severial neon's there has been water damage due to improperly sealed trunks and rear lights.water comes in.settles in tire well, then seeps into back seat and onto floor.to get this fixed$720. In cost.the back area fills up with water.the rugs mildew as well as the rear seat.the bolts on drivers seat rusted in short time.

Every time it rains, water comes in through the area where the back passenger door meets with the body of the car, causing rain to pool on the floor of the back seat and then the seat gets wet and the back of the seat also. I have made sure that window and door are securely closed. I can see no obvious reason for the rain to be getting into the car. It only does it on the back passenger side. Please advise me of ways to remedy this situation as soon as possible. The car is in mint condition and i wold like to keep it that way. Now the carpet and seat smells musy and i can't let my children ride in the car.

I have contacted your agency on several ocassions with no reply or results. Just by browsing the complaints of other neon owners, it is obvious this car has problems. If you cannot intervene on the behalf of the consumers, then why waste our time. We may as well just put it in the hands of lawyers. No safety defect listed in the summary.

By taking care of my car, ie. Washing and waxing it,i ended up keeping a known factory defect from occuring untill after their three year warranty.then 70% of the paint pealed off the roof and trunk of my car when i washed it one day.i was told by the dealer that the manufacturer knew about it but was never forced to issue a recall or notify customers.when the manufacture was contacted they said that it was out of warenty but out of the goodness of their heart they would pay $285.00 toward having it repainted at a dodge dealerbwho would charge me $2,800.00 because the problem is with the electro primer and the car would need to be stripped to the bare metal and reprimed.

I have had the trunk repainted once befor for the same reason while under warenty , now it is pealing off the top , the warenty is out , and no one can help me , i cant even get hold of the paint to do it my self because dodge no longer carries the the prodect ........just looking for a liitle advise or help , if any information is needed please email or call , [email protected] .......... Thank you

Nine times out of ten, when driving my 1996 dodge neon, the speedometer and odometer do not work.the speedometer usually stays at zero, however, it sometimes fluctuates between zero and fifteen mph even when traveling with the flow of traffic between 40-55 mph.

I have talked to several auto mechanics about this particular defect, and have been told that this is not an uncommon problem with the neons. I'm hoping that enough people will report this defect, so the manufacurer will issue a recall.
