We bought this car as the third owner the air bag light was on the cruise control didn't work and the horn wouldn't sound.after searching the internet, and finding out that they had many many of the internal pasts changed and the multitudes of people reimbursed, we took our car to the dealer and told because we were the third owner, and that the mileage was high, they would not accept responsibility. The car was never been in a accident, nor has it been abused. I think that because my horn can't work it may be a concern. I also think wile driving my air bag may deploy causing an insident.both dodge intrepid , and other dodges have the same problems. The problem can be resolved by paying 4-to5 hundred dollarsto the consumer. I feel as though the cost and replacement of the part should go back to the manufacturer as it is an internal part in the steering that breaks with out warning and without any cause from outside sources i.e.accedentsor other. Because not enough people contacted you, the manufacturer decided it wasn't good enough to be consideredor issue a recall.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. While the vehicle was parked, the air bag warning light illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the horn and cruise control feature were activated, but failed to function. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the clock spring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 146,000. Updated 02/23/16*ljthe consumer contacted the dealer. However they refused to do anything about the air bag problem. Updated 02/23/16.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. While parked, the contact noticed that the air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician advised that the air bag module would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

The consumer was driving approximately 35 mph when another vehicle hit the driver's front. Neither air bag deployed upon impact. There were injuries to driver and passenger. Please provide further information.*nlm

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 25, the contact made a left turn in an attempt to avoid an oncoming vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.the air bags did not deploy.the majority of the damage was on the front driver side of the vehicle.the contact can provide pictures and a police report if needed. The current and failure mileage were 116,000.the contact does not have the vin.

The car hit a patch of black ice and car slid into another vehicle going 55 mph on the highway.driver was wearing a seatbelt at time of accident and the airbag never deployed.driver had facial injuries and elbow went through windshield.very fortunate that was all.

While driving about 25 mph vehicle was involved in acollision.itrear ended an 18 wheeler. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy.driver was killed, and the front passenger was brain dead.

Coolant would completely discharge randomly and the plastic harness inside the steering wheel breaks while turning, thus rendering the horn / airbag useless. The harness is a $400+ repair and the coolant system resulted in $2800 in repairs due to a chain effect of problems. It all stemmed from a defect overfill cap and water pump. The coolant discharge occurs on the drivers side wheel-well and could easily cause loss of control. It would be nice to have a functioning air bag if that were to happen.

Consumer's fiance' was injured when vehicle was hit on driver side door and the air bags failed to deploy.*ph *la

While driving 15 mphconsumer's vehicle hit the vehicle in front.this caused a frontal collision.upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy.driver sustained neck and back injuries.driver went to the hospital the next day.

While driving on an interstate the car suddenly lost power, while pulling off the road the oil light came on and the car was shut off immediately.the car would not re-start again.mechanic described as lower end failure.

The intrepid has had to serviced about every 3 months. First it was the engine light came on due to the 02 sensor going out. Then it was the fan that belt broke on the car. Then it was the tires the would wear the tread really easily. Then it was the passenger door handle it broke on the inside. The it was the transmission that started skipping gears then it would make the rpm's go up. Now the whole transmission has gone out. We have only had this car for two years and we have taken good care of it.

It started out as just a rough idle.they couldn't duplicate it and told me to drive it until it got worse.i did.it then added trying to go dead when i pulled into parking places.they again couldn't duplicate concern.take it and drive it until it gets worse.then it started racing occassionally while at idle and would take five or six times to start only to to go dead when you pulled a short distance and came to a complete stop.they still can't duplicate the problem.chrysler told them to replace the head.the mechanic says there's nothing wrong with that head and that it will not fix the problem.i know they're going to give it back to me and say drive it until it gets worse again.the next step is for it to go dead in traffic and cause a wreck.

Loose ground wire to battery posed electrical problems. Also, odometer tampering. Vehicle died while driving. Also, suspension/ steering problems. Dealer replaced all four bulbs on headlamps and high/low beam dimmer switch ,and cleaned outengine hoses, pcv valve and fuel filter.

Was driving smelled hot when got home 3 miles latter opened hood cooling fan was smoking then caught on fire

The windshield wipers, horn and the interior/exterior lights malfunctioned. Which resulted in the vehicle shutting off.

Immediate loss of vehicle power..car went dead and immediately started to smoke and within seconds the engine compartment was up in flames. Vehicle did not overheat.. Engine compartment suffered major fire damage, insurance company investigation still pending.

We bought a 2002 used in 2005. It ran okay, thoughe h the oil pressure light and engine light would come on when idling. We were assured by the dealer we bought it from that itwas just sensor and not to worry. Had some small problems with it, nothing too major. They just seemed to happen all the time. Then in 3/09 the alternator and water pump went out for the 2nd time, and even after repair the car would over heat out of no where and without warning. Continued to have the problems with the oil pressure light and engine light. Should have gotten rid of it then, but didn't have the money for a new car. Then in 11/09 the car did the overheat for no reason while my husband was going 70 mph on the highway, thank god there wasn't an accident. The gauges didn't indicate anything, all of them including the spedometer went to 0. It started gushing water and antifreeze. The engine is shot, it is now a gold lawn ornament. We maintained the car, oil changes every 3000mi etc. Was told its due to "sludge" in the engine and that its a common problem with dodges 2.7 engines. Wish i would've known this before i bought the car, and i wish someone would do something about the ton yard ornament i now have.

While wife was driving car to store on 2 june 2006, intrepid engine shuttered and check engine light illuminated.shuttering stopped and engine runs smooth but light is still illuminated.mar 2006 engine oil change was accomplished along with a engine flush by ed's tire service, fayetteville, north carolina.july 2005 car failed inspection because of a bad battery, which was difficult to replace.between 2002-2004 front rotors have been replaced twice, once by the dodge dealership for $150.00 then once by me for $60.00.this sludge buildup problem that dodge refuses to fix is becoming stupid!they are making the money off of us, they to at least own up to their design flaw and fix the problem.does anyone know how to get sludge out of the engine other than tearing it down?

The computer "pm module" and related components keep failing on my new 2002 dodge intrepid. The last time this happened i was in rush-hour traffic and the car died right in ther middle of the freeway while traveling at 60mph. This put me direct risk of an accident. The pmmodule controls the ignition coils and the fuel pump and fuel injectors and throttle positioning sensor. I have had the car serviced for this problem 3 other times and the dodge dealership where i bought the car has not yet fully been able to fix the cause of the problem just the after effects.

Ignition switch failure.after turning off car, switch slips into accessory position and drains battery.car does not start when i return to the car to go somewhere.i need to pay for a jump or new battery, or tow to my mechanic.then i have to keep replacing the ignition switch.the original ignition switch lasted until 2011.the after market ignition switches fail within about a year.sometimes within a few months.since jan. 2011, i have had to replace the ignition switch on 1/10/11 cost $147.50, 2/16/2012, cost $220.39, alternator assembly, cost $588.28 (mechanic thought it couldn't be the switch again), starter assembly again 2/21/14, cost $384.23; recommended i replace the radio since the electrical system shorted out 3/14/2014, cost $45:ignition switch again on 8/01/14, cost $110.56.also this car keeps having the left rear taillights fail.they tell me this is all part of the electricalsystem short which they guess is causing all of the above problems.but all these problems didn't exist until i made the first replacement of the original ignition switch.i believe that the aftermarket was full of faulty gm ignition switches and there was no way for my mechanic to tell if we were getting bad gm designed switches.luckily for me and my passengers my car didn't fail while i was driving.it always happened when the car was parked.but having 95 year old passengers, on hot florida days, get into a car that won't start, cannot be cooled down, cannot even roll down the windows since they are electric , these conditions could have killed my elderly fragile passengers.there should be some way of insuring that all those bad switches are removed from the aftermarket.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.when purchasing the vehicle, the dealer would not allow the contact to inspect its undercarriage.afterwards, the contact had the vehicle inspected and a mechanic informed him that all of the mcpherson struts, the windshield wiper switch, the brakes, and all four rotors needed to be replaced.he further stated that there was excessive fluid in the transmission, which caused the vehicle to shift hard and drive roughly.the failure mileage was 54,000 and current mileage was 73,000. Updated 03-27-08 the brake lights stayed on when the vehicle was shut off. There was a problem with the wiring for the parking lights and headlights. Updated

While driving engine blew out and the consumer saw smoke coming from under the hood. Consumer pulled over, and had the vehicle towed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

An oil plug front left of engine block blew out pumping oil onto catalytic converter. Open flames melted wheel well, back bumper, and fuel hoses off of gas tank. Fire went out went all the oil was pumped out of engine and car stopped moving. I contacted chrysler safety, they referred me to dodge customer care; they initially created a case #31892226but then sent a letter saying they were not responsible because the car was out of a three-year warranty period and also unspecified environmental factors. Although my wife and son were almost immolated, it wasn't important enough for them to check into. The car remains parked at a local garage awaiting investigation.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitting in and around the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that fuel was leaking from the top of the engine and the check warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 145,000.

Engine failure 2.7l 2002 dodge intrepid vehicle owned over 10 years 111k miles current odm,oil change was not due at the time of engine failure.

Engine failure sludge , engine design.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that when driving approximately 55 mph or less, she would hear a loud knocking noise with the illumination of the low oil warning light. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised her that there was sludge in the motor, which needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was repaired by cleaning the sludge out of the engine however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they advised that the fuel and the cam sensor could have been the cause of the failure. The vehicle was repaired for both components. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000. The current mileage was approximately 130,000.updated 04/02/13*lj

My defective dodge 2.7l engine in my 02 intrepid.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 10 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle shook and downshifted into third gear.the mechanic could not remedy the issue.the contact feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive.the current and failure mileages were 74,000.

The engine oil pressure light on my 2002 dodge intrepid comes on when the car is fully warm and idles below 700 rpm.i took it to the dealer today and learned that the 2.7 liter engine contains sludge. This sludge will cause the engine to fail within 10000 miles.the car has been properly maintained.many many people have experienced this same problem.he engine willhave to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 25 mph, she heard a knocking noise then the vehicle shut off without warning.the dealer stated that sludge inside the engine caused the failure and recommended a new engine.as of may 12, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 76,000.

Due to engine sludge in my 2002 dodge intrepid the engine has locked up and needs to be replaced. Many other complaints and issues with this engine. Very unfair to the consumer not to correct the defects of this engine.

Without warning the vehicle stalled.driverpulled over and restarted the vehicle. Then, towed vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the coolant bleeder housingblew out, and the engine needed to be replaced.

I replaced an engine in a 2002 dodge intrepid last year and i am replacing one again this year.this engine is less than 80,000 miles and now the engine has locked up again.i am researching and finding other consumers are having engine problems with dodge intrepids.this is very costly!

We have had so many problems with our dodge intrepid leading up to the failure of the engine.first, the engine starting stalling, we would have to restart the car and it wouldn't shift from one gear to another.then there was a leak in the coolant pipe so we had to replace that.my boyfriend then drove the car forfew hours straight to go visit his family.he couldn't get the car started to come home.finally he got it started and started driving home.it died on the way home and hasn't been running since.we have been without a car because it costs so much to get it repaired and we can't sell it because we would hardly get anything for it.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 35 mph, the contact experienced issues with his vehicle and took it to an auto repair shop.the crank, fuel, and oil sensors were replaced.the same day, the engine failed.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the engine was clean and found no failures, other than the bearing.recently, the vehicle was taken to the dealer to install an idler and the transmission failed.the estimated repair cost for the transmission was $3,300.the extended warranty would not cover the repair costs.the manufacturer has not been notified.the current mileage was approximately 85,000 and failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

While driving 25 mph consumer heard a clicking noise, then, the engine blew out. Consumer had the vehicle towed. Dealership was aware of the problem, but did not resolve it.

Stopped at a stop sign, engine failed with no warning.

-the contact stated that he drovethe 2002 dodge intrepid to work on 01/24/07. At the end of the day he tried to start the vehicle and the engine turned over, but the vehicle didn't start. The next day he started the vehicle and it did start.he stated that he let the vehicle run for a while and heard a tapping noise from under the hood.he turned the vehicle off and didn't restart it. The contact stated that 2 weeks prior he had the vehicle serviced forthe 3,000 miles oil change.the contacthad the oil changed every 3,000 miles.the vehicle was towed to technical tune up in chicago.the service mechanic did a diagnosis, and told the contact that the crank shaft sensor had failed, the battery was low and the spark plugs were worn.the contact had the sensor , the battery and the spark plugs replaced.shortly there after, the tapping noise started again.the contact had the vehicle towed back to the mechanic shop, and he informed the contact that his engine had failed.the contact stated that he had found reports on line that other owners filed about the same issues, and chrysler stated that the ownerswere negligent with their vehicles. These reports showedthat sludge build upwas the cause for the engine failure..the current mileages was 80000.

While driving a 2002 dodge intrepid, the engine seized up.no warning lights.oil was checked and proper level was determined just prior to incident.mileage was just under 75,000.

Engine failure with no fore warning, on a well maintained 2002dodge intrepidthe engine seized while entering a highway and was very endangering, i am stil awaiting my part because i love my crappy car.

I began having trouble with my heater in my car and i took it into pep boys and they replaced the water pump and seals. Then it began again and then the check engine light came on and i was told that i had a transmission sensor going out. Soon after the car stalled and would not start. Before the car stalled the engine had a loud knocking coming from it.

We were driving our 2002 dodge intrepid and the engine light came on and then the engine shut off. I struggled to keep the car in control until i could pull off the side of the road. It was difficult because of loss of steering. The light had come on many times before but the service dept at my dodge dealer could not explain it. Now they say we need a new engine because of lack of oil changes. I just had the oil changed there and they did not mention sludge in the engine.

Dt*:the contact stated while traveling70 mph on the highway under normal road conditions, the heater started to blow cold air and then stalled.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that a valve, connected with the timing chain blew out and that the engine would need to be replaced.the contact found similar complaint via the web.compliant # 10099639 about the engine and engine cooling.the vehicle has not been replaced or repaired.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 40 mph, the contact activated the heather, but no heat was present.moreover, the check engine light illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that antifreeze was leaking into the engine.in order to pinpoint the exact location of the leak, an additional diagnosis is required at the cost of $900.the dealer also stated that the vehicle will need a new engine because the current one was built too small, and prevents the fluids from distributing correctly.the cost for the new engine is $8,400.the engine was previously checked and minor components were replaced.the contact will not have this failure corrected due to the cost.the manufacturer was notified, but would not assist.the vehicle was under warranty for only 36,000 miles.the current mileage was 77,000 and failure mileage was 52,000.

I own a 2002 intrepid and the engine lock up 100,000 miles . Check engine light came on check came up gas cap. Was driving and low oil light came on had just check oil it was full. Drove about 10 miles stop check again still full .checked for leaks none. Went about 2 miles and start knock and locked up. Talked to mechanic said he has rebuilt over `100 of them that have done same thing. Chrysler knew engine was not going to last. Only hold 4.5 qaurts of oil and oil port holes not big enough for that motor a 2.7 thanks lyman underwood.

Dodge intrepid 2002 engine light and oil light on while driving vehicle was disable and i was not able to visit my son which i had not see for over 5 month. I need some body help. Stuck with a car that does not work.

- the contact stated while drivingat 35 mph, on clear day and road conditions were good the vehicle lost power and the steering wheel became stiff. The contact said that she was able to pull vehicle over and tried to restart the vehicle.the contact stated that she had it towed to big -o tires in topeka, ks.big-o tires told her that theengineseized, and that the intrepid 2.7 liter engines werewell known for this happening.the contact stated that the mechanic said that the oil was not going to the engine properly which caused a sludge to build up.

As i was driving up a hill my car lost power and started to smoke.as i pulled off the road the engine quit, and a fire started under the hood.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid.it has 90,000 miles on it.i have taken good care to change the oil on a regular basis.due to oil sludge the engine failed while i was driving.it now needs a new engine at a cost of $4,000.i still owe $3,000 on the car.it is not worth it to fix it.this car is known for engine failure at 80-90k miles.i almost got in an accident.

Purchased the 2002 dodge intrepid 2/11/06. In less than 1 year the engine locked.the vehicle was towed to dealer. Not to rebuild. Salvaged engine wasn't an option, would only have the same problem. The mechanic found the core of the enginewas beyond repair. The two mechanics expected payment. I explored the web & the cheapest rebuildengine i couldfind was $2,499 + core charge, that i won't get back with a shot core. The mechanic will have to be paid of course, to reinstall the re-manufactured engine. Oh, and let's not forget the loan balance still required for the purchase of a car that cannotbe driven. Fortunately. I am able to borrow from my 401k to get the car drivable again or my daughter would be out of luck. However, the most discouraging thought was how long will the rebuildengine last? thank god it camewith a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.the original engine, when purchased used had 82,357 on it, and my daughteronly got about 10,000 miles of use before it died. That wasterrible.

I drove a 20022.7 dodge intrepid. One day i was driving down i-5, (the main highway) and my car started to over heat right away to the red and was blowing cold air. I was by myself and pulled over as far as i could. I pulled over as far as i could but my car was still in the lane. I waited a little while until my car cooled down, about 1 hour. I tried to drive it to the gas station to use a phone to call my dad. I finally got a hold of someone to come tow me home. The next day my dad had fixed the thermostat thinking this would help. Um..... No! my car started to blow cold air again. I was driving then all of a sudden my car just stopped on the freeway. I was not even able to pull over at all!!! my car just started to slow down and i couldn't even turn my wheel. I had to call the police department and let them know that i was in the freeway and was scared to cause an accident. They came and blocked the road and pushed me to the side of the freeway. This is the worst experience that has ever happened to me in my life!!!!! my dad looked at the car and checked the oil and all he could see was sludge everywhere. I am still making payments on my car and i still have it in my yard. This is a waste of money and do not feel that this is something i should be paying for.its just been sitting there and after reading all these complaints i cannot believe that dodge is still selling these cars and putting peoples lives in danger daily! i looked online for ways to stop people from buying these cars and found this site. I really hope something happens with these cars. Atleast stop selling them!!! if anyone has any advise as to what to do or how to fix my car without spending more than my car costs please help me! thank you

While driving, the vehicle stalled the driver tried to restart, but was unable to do so.the driver had the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed replacement.please provide further information.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid. In 2003 i had the torque converter replaced. Now in 2006 i've had transmission problems again . I took it to daytona dodge and they said it was under warranty. Then they told me i needed a new torque converter again. Then they called me about 4 days later and said i needed a engine block too because the ear that lines up the transmission was broke. They also said i needed to call my car ins. Because it was due to a impact. To make a long story short both chrysler and allstate have denied me twice i don't know what to do. I fell they messed up when i had the work done the first time by not lining it up right. The car has been there since jan. 26. I've had to rent cars for about 2000.00 (25.00 a day) till i couldn't afford it any more i bought a 600.00 car and the dodge is still there i hope you can help me.

- while drivingthe2002 dodge intrepid at 70 mphwith failure mileage 79,500 the contact heard a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. She took the vehicle to the dealer, and had them service the vehicle.the vehicle has now been salvaged due to the extent of the repair needed.

It all started with what i thought was just a broken water connector on the top of the chrysler 2.7 liter engine in our 2002 dodge intrepid. I replaced the part myself and thought that it was just a simple issue. But the very next day my wife went to work and got stranded when the car overheated again but there was leak this time just an extremely hot engine. After the engine cooled down and i was able to start it again it was clear to me that the engine had cratered and that it was all due to an internal oil problem from the beginning. As i have researched this issue it has become very clear that this is an ongoing problem with this engine and when we took it to a dodge dealer they were not aware of the problem until i told them about it. After tearing the engine down the dealership said the problem was the same as them others described in the websites, oil sludge causing the internal lubrication to fail. The dealer gave us $800.00 trade in for a car worth $4000.00 which we had work very had to pay off early. The only other recourse was to have a used or rebuild installed at a cost of $5500 to $8500.00 with no guarantee that it would not happen again. So now we have a new used car and a monthly payment again for something that chrysler knows is a problem but refuses to do anything about.

While driving 45 mph vehicle caught on fire.

Driving around doing errands, heading to the next town (15 miles) to finish my errands and my engine started to overheat.i turned around and went to the service station that was only about 1/2 mile away and had them look at the car. I had no previous problems with it overheating.it ended up being a cracked block. I needed to get a different engine because it was to expensive to repair the original one.

While driving my car the check engine light came on and there was no heat coming out of the heating unit. This has occurred several times since purchasing this vehicle.the vehicle is now at the dealers they want $900.00 just to take the engine apart. If it needed a new engine it would cost $8,000.since we still owe $6000 this is not a practical solution.this vehicle only has 77,000 miles on it.i called daimler chrysler this morning and they said there is nothing they can do to help me.they stated the engine is only warranted up to 36,000 miles.

2002 dodge intrepid with oil leak. Consumer states that the vehicles engine has a design flaw which produces high levels of engine oil sludge.after the oil leak was repaired, the check engine light illuminated two months later, the consumer was told the vehicle had a transmission leak.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while exiting a highway at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. He was able to safely shift the vehicle into neutral and coast to the side of the road. After one day of being parked, he noticed oil leakage under the vehicle. The vehicle has not been inspected or repaired by a technician.the current and failure mileages were 110,000.

I have a 2002 chrysler intrepids with a sludges build up problem.i 'm covered under a warranty that ipurchased with chrysler at time time of sell. I have been told that my car is not covered for the sludge problem by the insrance company that my car is under. The mechanic at the dodge dealership showed me about four other engine with the same problem that my car have and they all were rejected to be repaired under the warrant. The mechanic told me this is a on going problem with the intrepidsand the oil should be changed every other month to stop the build up and chrysler is not telling the the owners of this need to change the oil everyother month to prevent the sludge build up.

My wife was driving to work when the car quickly overheated. She immediately pulled vehicle off the road and turned it off. She was left stranded over 25 miles from our home on foot. Later that day after it had cooled down i added coolant and drove it about 2 miles to a small repair shop. They advised me that either the head gasket was blown or the block was cracked. I had it towed to the dealership where i purchased it. They advised me my motor was blown as a result of oil sludge build up. They concluded this after removing only the valve cover on one side. Before asking me for either a maintenance log or oil change receipts i was informed the failure was due to owner neglect. When i protested to the service manager i was asked to produce receipts. Upon seeing that there was a 4000 mile lapse between oil changes warranty coverage was denied. I was even charged $225 to examine my car to deny warranty coverage. I have repeatedly request that the chrysler zone manager be put in touch with me to no avail. My car sits parked in front of my house still completely disabled as i continue to make payments.

Dt:the contact stated the timing chain came loose and damaged the top valve cover of the engine.while driving, the vehicle stalled , and had to be towed. He contacted the manufacturer.there were no recalls on this problem.the vehicle will be inspected by a mechanic.dependingonwhat the mechanic will report the vehicle will either be repaired or salvaged.

Dt*: the contact stated the timing belt snapped on the vehicle while driving 2 mph.the contact stated the belts were often checked for wear and tear.the service dealer determined the vehicle should have had a new timing belt.

2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 enginecar sudenly overheated. Anti freeze went out on ground and into oil. Repalced water pump, tensioner, timimg chain, several sensors, gaskets and more.always maintained oil changes at 300k and oil filters. Bad engine- parts saved.

Dt*: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated and there was a knocking noise heard in the engine.the vehicle continually would not start.eventually, the engine failed to start.the dealership determined the engine was bad due to oil sludge build-up and would need to be replaced.

My 2002 dodge intrepid stopped running while i was headed uphill in traffic i managed to make it to the side of the road my mechanic towed it and ran a diagnostic check on it which cam back cam sensor and crankshaft sensor ... Replaced both.. Car still wont start.. Was told that i possibly flooded the spark plugs while trying to restart it... Replaced spark plugs... Car still wont start after further investigation was told that the 2.7 engine is defective and needs to be replaced which if i can find a decent used engine will be atleast $3500 but i cannot find a used dodge intrepid engine because they are all bad! i still owe more than $2000 on the car and cannot afford a new engine.. I am behind on payments because i have no transportation to work... Or to the grocery store.. Or the doctor or to my 3 kidsschool for that matter.

First was a funny clicking noise when the car started. It started to get worse very quickly and i had it looked at. The problem couldn't be found at that time. Shortly there after it broke down. This time i am told that the engine has a sludge build up problem which in turn caused the timing chain to break. Now i'm told that the best thing to do is spend between $4,500 and $5,000 to replace the engine. It hasn't been repaired yet (12-11-2007).

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 20 mph, the engine shut off.the contact was able to coast to the side of the road.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the timing chain went through the engine block.the current mileage was 149,000 and failure mileage was 90,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 20 mph, the engine hesitated and lost power completely.the contact pushed the vehicle to the side of the road.the vehicle would not restart.he waited two hours before the vehicle managed to restart and then drove it to a mechanic.the contact was informed that the oil reservoir was full of coolant and antifreeze, which was common for his type of vehicle.he took the vehicle to another shop and was informed of the same thing, including that the engine needed to be replaced.the manufacturer stated that they were not responsible for the defect.the contact feels that a recall should be issued.the current and failure mileages were 84,000. Updated 6/01/09 updated 06/02/09.

Engine & oil light repeatedly came on.idled low and would cut off.i was in the middle of traffic and car just cut off when i attempted to slow.car behind me almost hit me and man had road rage.luckily the car restarted and got me into my apt complex where it cut off for the last time.i had completed oil changes as recommended and was told there was no problem.this is a common problem as stated per guy that attempted to look at the car.now i need a motor on a car that is barely worth the value of the car.there may not have been an accident or death, but this is too common a problem for dodge to ignore.

2002 dodge intrepid with 2.7 v6 engine stalled at stop light, was able to drive about 2 miles to auto repair (no more that 20 mph) advised had to tear down engine to see what problem was...advised timing chain and water pump paid $1000 for repairs, 3 months later engine making loud noise when starts... Back to auto repair shop, advising engine shot, has to be rebuilt approx cost $2500 to $3500 .. Unbelievable for a car that is only 5 years old.

Vehicle cut off. Mechanic stated that vehicle was two quarts of oil low.consumer drove the vehicle for approximately six months and thenvehicle would not start.

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid...i have to replace the motor...it only has 76,000 and dodge will not do anything about it...

Dt*: the contact stated the engine light illuminated, and one minute later smoke started coming out of the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to a dealer who determine a seal on the disconnected emitting fluid which caused the smoke.

Car began to overheat and lose anti-freeze. Took into a local napa to get thermostat and upper intake hosed replaced(600). Water pump failed, took car to dealership, got timing chain kit and water pump fixed(1200). Then oil light would not go off, replaced oil sending unit and cleaned sludge (300). They heard knocking and replaced starter (500). Now need engine an estimated(4000).

Immediate loss of vehicle power..car went dead and immediately started to smoke and within seconds the engine compartment was up in flames. Vehicle did not overheat.. Engine compartment suffered major fire damage, insurance company investigation still pending.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving between 45-50 mph, the engine light illuminated.the temperature in the vehicle was fine and the contact pulled over the vehicle.when he turned the vehicle off, he discovered that water leaked everywhere.the following day, he changed the oil and found water in the oil.he also found water in the engine and stated that the engine gasket failed.the vehicle has not yet been taken to the dealer.the failure mileage was 118,000.

Dt: the problem began two or three days ago. While drivingvehicle shut off andstopped. The check engine light came on. Vehicle was taken to a mechanic, and was unable to determine what the code meant.vehicle was taken to a second mechanic, who again was unable to determine the cause of the problem. This mechanic changed the rotors, but also was unable to tell what the code meant.the vehicle shut down on a main road, a 4 lane highway, while traveling about 50 mph. There was no other warning besides the check engine light to indicate that the car was going to shut down. Vehicle coasted toa stop and rested in the turning lane. There was a little braking, but no steering ability.electrical system was still functioning. The police came ,and the vehicle was towed to a shop. Then a couple days later the vehicle started back up with a clutter in the engine.

Hello i own a 2002 dodge intrepid, this vehicle has been giving me serious problems since it reached 60,000 miles. It all started with the oil light flickering on and off and the engine light would also do the same thing. Then the water pump and thermostat went out. Next the water outlet housing started leaking. Now the transmission is acting up and the car makes big jerking motions when driving and the rpm rises up.my wife has been in the car with our children and the car would just stall, while driving. Finally i had enough the safety of my family is number onepriority. It seems dodge owners around this country are having similar problemsat such low mileage. My neighbors, friends and family members are telling the same story. These vehicles need to be recalled, due to engine defects. I have spent hundreds of dollars already in repairs. Every family deserves a vehicle that is safe for their family, friends, and neighbors. The dodge intrepid's need to be recalled, because they are very unsafe to drive. It shouldn't have to take a death to recall these vehicles. Put an end to this engine failures and demand a recall. We need your help to solve this safety hazard, with these engines. I have parked the vehicle even though i still owe 4,900 dollars because i didn't want to trade thecar in and put another family, in danger. My wife and i purchased another vehicle, has over 70,000 miles and runs really well. Please recall the dodge intrepids, help keep are streets and highways safe, from defected engines. Went out and the water outlet housing leaks.

My vehicle was being serviced for a head-gasket leak. The dodge dealer servicing my vehicle advised me to get rid of the vehicle quickly because it has sludge buildup that cannot be removed and that it runs a high risk of seizing up, which itself can result in an accident and injury.

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid with a 2.7l engine. The car only has 45,850 original miles.at times it will make a knocking noise that will eventually go away. I was told that the 2.7l has a problem with sludge buildup causing vital internal engine parts not to become lubricated. I have my oil changed every 1500 to 3000 miles and have only driven it 23,000 miles since buying it in 2006 i have taken it to several repair shops , but most mechanics refuse to work on it because of the so called sludge problem and the high cost of the repairs.some suggested using full synthetic oil to combat the problem. Others have stated that the only solution is to replace the engine completely. I have also questioned chrysler as to any recalls for the 2.7l intrepid but no answer. I have also noticed that there are several complaints about this problem across north america. If chrysler knew this was a problem with these engines, they should have informed us the consumers and taken actions to correct it. I think they decided to keep their mouth shut and flood our country with a worthless product. Chrysler needs to own up to this defect. I have been a loyal customer of dodge for many years but is fading fast when it comes to american made vehicles.

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid always did regular oil changes. Oil light came on, started hearing a knocking sound from the engine. The dealer says i have to replace the engine, otherwise it may seize while driving, causing a serious condition.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 55 mph, the engine began making noise and the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road.the weather was not a factor.the contact took the vehicle to be repaired and the dealer stated that they had to wait on an inspector to investigate the failure.three weeks later, the inspector stated that there was sludge build up and the oil filter looked rusty.the vehicle is still at the dealer to be repaired.the failure mileage was 78,900.

Oil light coming on at idle and then going of when pressing gas.loud ticking noise in engine.66600 miles on vehicle of this 66600 i put 49000 on vehicle.i have had the engine diagnosed and it needs a new engine.faulty engine, it will cost several thousand dollars just to try to repair the engine and new one cost 4000 to 8000 dollars.this vehicle is dangerous and i have researched and found that there are thousands of others with this particular motor that daimler chrysler makes with the exact same problem and mileage has no effect or how often it is maintained.i cannot afford to replace this motor and daimler chrysler will not honor nor offer warranty for this problem and blames the consumers.i request an investigation, these are lemon cars and should be recalled.what if my children and i were killed because of an accident due to this engine failure?maybe that's what it will take for someone to do something about this.it is not fair to the consumers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While getting an oil change and having the water pump replaced, my mechanic found oil sludge under the valve covers. He said this is very common in the chrysler 2.7l engines. He cleaned it out as best he could with solvent and rags. The cost was over $200.00 for just the cleanup, and i don't know how much more sludge is in the lower part of the engine. Engine failure could be coming soon.

While driving on president george bush turnpike (west) the oil light flashed on and immediately afterwards the engine locked up.the failure of the motor required that my wife, 1 year old son and i sit in the dallas heat for nearly 45 minutes while waiting for a cab to take my wife and son to the airport ($50 expense) and i waited on the tow truck to take the vehicle back to our house ($125 tow bill).not to mention i will be expected to incur a $7000.00 bill in order to fix the defective engine.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 60 mph, the contact heard a loud and fast clunking noise coming from the engine.he arrived home and called his mechanic.the mechanic arrived at the contact's residence and stated that the head gasket failed, which was a very common failure with that make and model vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 116,000.

Dodge intrepid 2002 1),weesk prior oil loight came on and it was cold out and then it ent out.never thought much about it.2) failure of engine (siezed engine) 2 blokcs from my house going about 40 miles per hour and i attempted to go home and my car died straddling 3 lanes of traffic.3) nothing yet, suspect i need a new engine.

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid with a 2.7-liter engine in july of 2005 from holley dodge in middletown, ct for $9,500.the vehicle at that time had 48,000 miles on it.in july of 2007 (at 78,000 miles) i experienced engine problems and, after bringing it back to holley dodge for service, was told the engine had low compression and was offered repair options of: 1) tearing down the motor which would cost at least $2,500 depending upon what is found; 2) a rebuilt motor for $3,500+; or 3) a new motor for $4,500+.the warranty did not cover the cost (36,000 miles/3 years).i had maintain the care carefully, changing the oil every 3,000 mile which is more frequent than recommended in the owners manual. After researching this matter, i discovered a vast amount of similar complaints from all over the united states as well as numerous web sites devoted to this 2.7-liter daimlerchrysler engine problem.experts believe the engine problems may be due to engine defects or oil sludge build-up that is common in 2.7l vehicles. I have read that the center for auto safety has received five times more oil sludge complaints on chrysler 2.7l vehicles than other vehicles.apparently these complaints involve quite a few dodge and chrysler vehicles from 1998 to present. I believe chrysler is violating consumer rights under lemon laws or other consumer-protection laws. Can you advise me?thanks, mike veneski

2002 dodge intrepid engine failure from oil sludge.driving down the street and the car started making knocking sound and startedbogging out.took it to dealer who said the engine needed to be replaced which will cost $6100.00.chrysler said that we would have to pay a $2500.00 deductible since the car was out of warranty.we bought the car in 2003 with 19,000 miles on it from a dealer and the car now only has 53,000 miles on it.chrysler needs to own up to this.there is hundreds of complaints on this very same problem.please make them issue a recall on this 2.7l engine.toyota did with less complaints.

While driving 30 mphvehicle stalled.this caused loss of steering and brakes.vehicle was taken to independent repair shop, andmechanic determined that engine need to be replaced.

I get oil change as directed and have never had problems.all of a sudden, i'm driving and nearly had a fatal accident as my car engine just started running terrible.the dealer states that my engine has failed and that i must pay $3200.there was a news special report on the same night regarding my vehicle and it appears that this problem is common.the dealer states that they've heard numerous complaints as well as other mechanics but chrysler refuses to recall.this is very dangerous and i am terribly dissatisfied.please help!!

My 02 dodge2.7 ltiminghas failed. Since almost all havethe same problem whychrysler does not have a recall ? that's whati call rip off.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.the contact noticed that the engine warning indicator would consistently illuminate on the instrument panel.in addition, he observed smoke underneath the hood of the vehicle.he took the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasions and they replaced the water pump, vacuum lines, and hoses.none of the repairs have corrected the failure.the manufacturer did not assist.the failure mileage was 67,000 and current mileage was 77,000.updated 4/23/09 the consumer stated the vehicle would start to smoke and at times it would stall. The tie rods were replace. Updated 04/27/09.

Noticed antifreeze leaking from under center area of car, attempted to pit in antifreeze, leaked out right away. I checked the oil and it was full of antifreeze. The motor is shot. There was no warning no service lights the car has not been over heated, it was very well maintained by a local dealer.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that while having repairs on the vehicle, she was advised by the technicians that the valve gasket was covered in oil sludge. The mechanic advised that the valve gasket cover needed to be cleaned and the oil needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 186,000.updated 02/0812 updated 03/16/12

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.on april 23, 2007, the vehicle made a clunking sound and shut off while driving 25 mph.the vehicle was towed and the mechanic stated that the bearings on the vehicle failed.there were no prior warnings.the vin was unavailable.the current and failure mileages were 72,563.

Impending failure of 2.7l engine installed in 2002 dodge intrepid.according to a mechanic a bearing(s) loses its plating and causes metal flakes to block oil galleries leading to oil starvation and eventual failure of the engine.this could lead to a mva if the failure occurs in traffic.mine is starting to fail and according to the mechanic this has been a problem with intrepids.

Bought the car in 2007 and 3 weeks after having the car the transmission went out had to get it replace $400 with a extendedwarranty, a year later radiator went out had to pay $768 , just problem after problem with this engine 2.7 liter 2002 dodge intrepid , now theirs another leak of the antifreeze.

At 60k miles i had to have a brand new transmission put in, and just 1 week ago i took it into the dealership and they say i need a new engine! it only has 84k miles on it. I don't even owe as much as it will cost me to fix the car, i am very upset.i have taken good care of my car, and to have so major problems with a new car is very disappointing.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. While the contact wasdriving approximately 45 mph, the engine completely stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. The technician stated there was metal in the oil. The vehicle was inoperable and had not been repaired for the malfunction. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Thermostat housing popped off when driving down highway this part is glued on i have seen other cars and reports of this same thing happening to others, this part should have been bolted not glued, since then have had problems with car.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 65 mph, the vehicle began to shake and smoke without warning.the contact had just taken the vehicle in for an oil change.the contact pulled off the road and the vehicle was towed.the dealer stated that the engine failed and will cost $6,800 to replace.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 12,000.

I bought a 2002 dodge intrepid se in march 2003 with about 20k miles on it.had it checked by a mechanic and was told all was good.$1,420 to repair the water pump? the engine made a sound, shook slightly which made me look at the gauges to see what was up.the only thing i saw was that the temperature was a little tiny bit over the halfway mark. Usually, this gauge sits without changing once the car is warmed up between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark.recommend: any service shop that changes the oil in a car should input that service into a national computer system so that anywhere people drive, move, visit, that record is permanent.that is my first suggestions.then she asked me if the car had overheated.answer:no.she said the estimate to repair the car was $1,300 and if the heads were cracked that could cost another $700.i was like, "what?"say that again.the way the 2.7l engine is built, the repairs are expensive. I asked if it was worth replacing and she said it was..she couldn't advise me...but you know how it is.this is not a problem confined to my car - it has affected a fleet of them...same type..same engine.after i drove off the lot, i heard a ticking noise.i asked about the notes on the mechanic's ticket that said, "* engine has sludge".no one ever mentioned that to me and i didn't know what it was, either, so i asked.what's that?she said, "that's just the mechanic's notes for when you bring it back."i said, "...yes...but what is it?"then a mechanic appeared and started talking about using synthetic or regular oil (how am i, a lay person, supposed to know what?) to reduce engine sludge and yes, "all these 2.7l intrepid engines have this problem."i said, "so...what does it do?"chrysler needs to fix the 2.7l engine problems, find a fix for the sludge problem even if it means replacing the engine with another type.it is not fair to cost us unnecessary repairs.

While driving, the car suddenly stopped.it wasn't until after the car stopped in the middle of the road that any of the gauges seemed to indicate any problems.there was no warning! this was a country road so there wasn't much traffic, but had there been, it would have been disastrous.the water pump suddenly quit working.in order to correct the problem, i am currently spending $1,000 to replace the pump!the car only has 67,000 miles!

My daughter was driving home from college when our 2002 dodge intrepid engine failed while crossing trolley tracks in our local town.

Engine coolant:car ran hot without warning. Temperature gauge blew off of radiator and coolant exploded all over the engine.

I was driving my car and noticed there was not heat.the fan was blowing, but the air was not warm.the day before, the car was running fine.i pulled over and called my husband immediately.i asked me if there were any noises, smoke, strange smells, and if the temperature was fine.i said no to all and that the temperature was fine.he said to drive a little further and see.i drove not even 1/2 mile down the road (myself and my daughter were in the middle of nowhere) and noticed smoke.i pulled over and called my husband again.he asked me if there was any water coming out of the exhaust, no there was not.he asked me to look under the hood and check the water/antifreeze reservoir.the reservoir was empty.he came out immediately and by the time he got there, the motor was all cooled down.he put 2 gallons of water in the reservoir, which seemed to disappear.he checked the oil, and there was water in it.there was not warning!i have maintained my car well and have had 90% of all my work done at the dealership where i bought it.i have done all the recommended work when they have worked on my car.i even had the radiator flushed, transmission flushed, and the serpentine belt replaced because they said it needed it.

Heat failed in vehicle approx. Feb.7,2007 then in march of 2008 car engine failed on the expressway. I had car towed to the dealer that sold me the car and they ordered a new engine. Engine was back ordered and i had to wait over a month for engine. Now i have to return the car because engine is running rough and black smoke is coming out of exhaust pipe when it is started.

The dexco anti-freeze that was put in the vehicle bt the manufacturer, is drying out and causing problems with the engine. The engine light has illuminated.took to mechanic and the radiator needed flushing and the intake gaskets needed replacing.*nlm

Dt: vehicle overheated while going down the road. Took the vehicle to the dealer they changed the oil, thermostat and housing. Then a week later was driving the highway and the motor blew out.the vehicle wasback at the dealer. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who would not assist in the cost of the repair. This happened on august 4, 2005.

Two incidents:october 2007, a 2002 dodge intrepid with 2.7l v6 had an engine cooling failure causing immediate overheating problem on florida highways.the cooling fitting on the top of the engine popped off causing the engine to loose most of it's coolant.approximate mileage 106,000this was taken to the dealer for an expensive repair.at the time the dealer did not notify me of the serious problems with this engine, such as sludge oil pump failures.on january 19th, 2009, the engine failed again.at approximately 125,000 miles.the water pump failed, the heads were blown, and probably the sludge oil pump caused this whole sequence of problems that could have been avoided if dodge made design changes back in 2007.the estimate for replacing the engine is at $6500.not feasible to repair and i found many complaints about this engine design dating back to 1998 and 1999.both failures were immediate with little warning to the driver.thank god no one was injured. Owned by son nick straty

Water pump failure caused by oil sludge on a 2002 intrepid seeped water into crankshaft of motor causing further damage to motor.poor design for water pump.

2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 enginecar sudenly overheated. Anti freeze went out on ground and into oil. Repalced water pump, tensioner, timimg chain, several sensors, gaskets and more.always maintained oil changes at 300k and oil filters. Bad engine- parts saved.

A/c evaporator, ac receiver dryer, heater core had to be replaced for my 2002 dodge intrepid. The car had less than 64,000 miles on it. The repair was extensive as the steering wheel and dash board had to be pulled out. Hours of labor apprx= 8. This was a problem described in the technical service bulletin # 2400204a. Apparently this part has a history of failure. Cost of repair was 897.00. The main reason for this repair is because the air conditioner stopped working. I really thought we should of been reimbursed by chrysler for this repair as it was so extensive, and there was so many other complaints pertaining to this part.i researched silent warranties on this problem but could not really turn up anything to help.

Engine check light came on . Vehiclewas taken tothe dealer, where consumer was informed ,that metal was in the engine.manufacturer hasdnot been contacted.

The vehicle continued to overheat.vehicle was been taken to the dealer three times in june 2003. The dealer was unable to determine or duplicate the problem.the solenoid pack was replaced.the vehicle hesitated and could not be shifted into the fourth gear. *scc. The consumer also stated the vehicle hesitated while driving.

There was a failure of 2 cooling fans on 2002 dodge intrepid.the shaft of both motors were loose.the r/rnew cooling fan motor.the consumer requestedreimbursement for the money spent o the n repairs due to the fact that the vehicle was only 79 miles out of warranty. *tc*sc

We have a 2002 dodge intrepid, we have replaced 2 fuses for the a/c and now they said it is the fan.the a/c man told us there was a recall on the caravans and the stratus. I feel that the intrepid should be added.this is the second vehicle we have had this problem with. We had a plymouth voyager and the same thing happened.i feel that you should check thesevehiclesconcerning this.

My family and i while driving down the highway in our 2002 dodge intrepid se 2.7 liter the engine failed with no warning after further research have found that chrysler is aware of this problem yet has done nothing and will do nothing to correct it. This is unfortunate as this problem presents real danger for people around these cars when the engine fails.

My used 2002 dodge intrepid with a chrysler 2.7 engine started knocking like crazy after stopping on me several times while driving. The first expensive "repair" to correct this problem was replacement of a fuel pump and a "fuel pump cont module carter electric fuel ass" which had cracked (345.00 for the part, $600.00 for the "repair"). Two weeks later the engine was knocking even more loudly and i was informed by pep boys that the engine was shot--locked up--and that i should have it towed to a dodge dealer. $172.00 later, the dodge dealer had towed my car and told me the same thing. The warranty company demanded oil change maintenance receipts which we could not produce as we have friends who change the oil for us. We were told by several engine repair companies we contacted (trying to find an affordable option) that the 2.7 engine had a defective timing chain which does not allow oil to pass through and be burned properly, causing sludge to build up and destroy the engine. Of course dodge and the warranty company "blamed" it on our "poor maintenance"--we still owe 9,000 on the car!!!--the currie motors dodge dealer wanted to charge $750.00 to "tear down" the engine, then said they could put in a refurbished engine for$5300.00!! no apologies for their defective engine. No consideration whatever. They seemed gleeful that they were going to make so much money from our distress! each engine replacement company we called to inquire about the cost of replacing an engine asked, before we even told them, "is it a chrysler 2.7?" the dodge chrysler company should recall all autos with 2.7 engines and replace the engines for free with an improved 2.7 model. I know after this experience that i will never buy another dodge or chrysler or any other model marketed by these dealerships. I regret that i had no idea about dodge inferiority before i purchased the vehicle. I didn't do my "homework," i guess.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 40 mph the engine failed.the service engine light illuminated and the temperature gauge went to hot.the vehicle was towed to the dealership and they determined the engine needed to be replaced.the timing chain failed which caused complete engine failure. Updated 05/10/06.

While driving 55 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from the engine. This caused vehicle not to go over 5 mph.consumer managed to pull over, and had the vehicle towed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Engine sludge oil pump.

While driving, the vehicle made a loud clanking noise and jerked.the engine stalled and thevehicle was taken to the dealer. The consumer was informed that a new engine was needed.there were never any warning signs.(lights, leaks)the engine check light had come on after the clanking noise and jerking. *sc

The consumer heard complaints of the 2002 intrepid's engine problems.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.the contact turned the ignition key and the engine failed to completely turnover.immediately, there was an ignition misfire.there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel.roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing.the technician stated that the failure was related to engine sludge.the vehicle is currently inoperable and has not been repaired.the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 68,000.

While drivingvehicle stalled.consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had it towed to dealer.mechanic determined thatengine needed to be replaced due to sludge build up.

I drive a 2002 dodge intrepid. I bought this car as a second owner, previous owner a rental agency. The car blew a rod on tuesday, november 15th. I took it to a dealership that states the vehicle needs a new engine, pricing the repair at 6700 dollars. The cars blue book is 6000 at this writing. I bought this vehicle two years ago, and it has less than 68,000 miles on it. I am at a loss and looking for recourse.

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid always did regular oil changes. Oil light came on, started hearing a knocking sound from the engine. The dealer says i have to replace the engine, otherwise it may seize while driving, causing a serious condition.

Engine failure.engine failed due to water ump allowing water to enter engine via oil pan.sludge problems caused timing chain to be excessively tight thereby causing too much pressure on waterpump bearings.waterpump bearings failed thereby letting water flow directly into engine.oil has been changed in this car regularly.this is entirely a design flaw.i still owe a lot on the car and can't afford a new engine or even a used one.

While driving on the highway engine completely failed. Contacted the dealer, and was told that there was a problem with the 2.7 liter engines. Sludge buildup caused the engine to overheated suddenly.

2002 dodge intrepid thermostat radiator cap stopped working and i got that fixed and we were test driving the car and it worked fine, for a bit. As we were driving the car started shaking and then the engine blew. It stopped working in the middle of december 2008. We need to buy a new engine. It was sudden, and we took the car to get the oil change and the entire vehicle checked every 3 months.

Merging into traffic when engine blew.had to have car towed and engine replaced. Had to tow car from first shop who wouldn't work on it to another shop. With out use of car from 12-23-04 to 01-31-05. But still making car payments.had to travel 220 miles to get car when work was done than 220 miles back. Engine was replaced with another out of wrecked vehicle.old engine was turned in for core charge to a salvage yard.

My daughter was driving home on may 4, 2006 in her 2002 dodge intrepid, as she was driving up a hill thankfully not down a hill her engine began to make a knocking noise like there was no oil in her vehicle, her oil was changed 400 miles previous to this incident her engine seized up and now will not run.it was towed to a nearby garage and the oil was checked and found to be clean and filled to the required capacity. And was also told that this particular engine was known to be defective.i am now currently looking for an engine for this vehicle but am having trouble because these engines are junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning engine check light appeared on the dashboard, andvehicle overheated.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving at an unknown speed, the oil light illuminated and the vehicle stalled.the contact's father-in-law installed a new battery.the vehicle restarted and the contact pulled back onto the highway.she immediately heard a loud noise coming from under the hood and pulled off the road.the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic and the contact was informed that the failure was due to excessive engine sludge that caused a rod to snap in the engine.the mechanic stated that a new engine would cost $5,000.the failure and current mileages were 89,000.

Blown motor.

Dt*: the contact stated that the transmission, radiator, oil thinning unit, and harmonic balancer have all been replaced.there was concern expressed that this should not be normal wear and tear even though the vehicle has 69000 miles on it.

Engine blew a bearing at 92,000 miles, was told by 2 different reputable repair shops to scrap engine that its not worth fixing. Learned that oil flow defects cause this problem on dodge 2.7l engine.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving 15 mph, the engine failed.the contact pulled over and pushed the vehicle to the dealer.the dealer stated that the vehicle needed a new engine.the cost would be $7,900. The current and failure mileages were 51,000. Updated 03-04-08

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid i purchased new at ganley dodge of bedford. The car's engine failed in the middle of the freeway at only 18 months of usage. The car continues to experience engine failure with no avail on the repair. I am told i am not alone in this issue based on web articles and message boards. Help!! before someone is killed or badly injured by this product.*la

Vehiclestalled without any warning while driving 60 mph.consumer was able to pull off the road and was towed to a dealer.technician indicated that engine locked, and the engine needed to be replaced at owner's expense due to sludge.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.the contact heard a knocking noise in the engine and took the vehicle to the dealer.he was informed that the failure was due to an oil flush and a metal flashing, which was caused by a defect from the factory.the dealer stated that there was no guarantee that they could correct the issue.he has found numerous complaints online for his make and model vehicle relating to the engine.the dealer stated that it would be best to purchase a new engine.the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 79,541.

Car just started dying and never gave a warning, oil started blowing out on top of the motor , white smoke started coming out of the car . The car has a 2.7l engine in it . This is the first time we had ever had this problem with the car, the oil has been changed regularly in the vehicle .

I bought the 2002 dodge intrepid new and from day 1 we used synthetic oil in the vehicle. My mechanic always told me that was the best treatmentfor the longevity of an engine. My wife has always been the primary driver of the car and we followed the maintenanceschedule properly. She was waiting to turn into our community after returning home from work , when without warning the engine failed. Weneeded a motor.

Purchased dec 2001 with maximum added care protection plan for 6yr/60k miles.performed all vehicle required maintenance and never had an issue until 12/11/06 when the vehicle stopped in motion presenting a clicking sound.vehicle towed to dealer as we thought to repair an alternator or battery.however the dealer states that our vehicle's motor ceased and it has sludge in the engine as when they open the oil cap, sludge is clearly evident.we are still attempting to get the service agreement to pay for the repair as we feel that it is not our fault since providing regular maintenance and the vehicle is presently under such warranty coverage.our internet research shows that there are hundreds of 2.7 liter engine owners have suffered the same issue with daimlerchrysler accepting no fault but acknowledging this is a common complaint however dcx refers that consumers did not follow regular maintenance schedules.dealer cost to replace/repair engine $8900 as quoted on 12/11/06 by cueter dodge ypsilanti, mi.

Engine sludge dec 2007, engine sludge october 2008, resulting in vehicle malfunction. The car stopped on a major highway in rush hour traffic. The oil light came on and the car immediately died. Luckily i wasn't rearended. The oil is changed every 3000 miles. Chrysler should be replacing the motors on these vehicles before someone is killed. Right now the car is sitting, non-working. I cannot afford to replace the motor.

While driving vehicle stalled.consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and towed it to dealer for inspection.mechanic detrermined that the engine needed to be replaced.

The oil light flickers when i slow down, and when i am at idle at a light, the oil light comes on and only goes away when i accelerate. I am concerned that the bearings and/or oil pump need replacing before any more significant damage starts with the engine. I have called auto shops and no one gives me a straight answer on what it is. All i know is that repairs are very expensive. This is horrible, its only a 2002!

I financed a 2002 dodge intrepid in february 2003. The payments are over $400 per month for 6 years.on december 21, 2004, the engine failed. I still had a warranty on the vehicle, so i called to have it towed to the dealer where i purchased it. After authorizing them to break the engine down and see exactly what the problem was, i was told it needed a new engine. After the warranty company came out to do their inspection, i was told it was my fault and i was responsible for all charges. They said the problem was sludge buildup and lack of oil change. My problem is that there was no warning at all.there was no engine knocking , the check engine light never came on, the car was running good. And then one day the engine is no good. I still have 4 years to pay for this vehicle and i have to buy a new engine, which costs $4,000 to $7,000. (the engine only had 59,000 miles on it) this doesnt make any sense to me. I also have to pay the dealer $360 for breaking the engine down to find the problem. Is there any help for me or is there anything i can do? in the past week i have heard hundreds of complaints about these engine problems in the dodge intrepid. Thank you for your time.lori justice12/30/04.

Sludge build up, overheated, water pump out, timing chain broken.

The vehicle just started knocking to it to the shop and was told it need a new engine car has less the 70,000 miles on it and its only a 2002. The repair shop says it has sludge that caused it to spin a bearing.the good news i have a warranty the bad news is the wont cover the whole repair and is given me the run around about fixing the car.also had to have the transmission replaced just 2 months ago.

While driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The driver tried to restart the vehicle and was not able to do so. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed to be replaced.

Cooling system failure cause the car to over heats andresulted in total damage of the engine; crysler refuses to supply the engine and my car is dismantled in the dealership for more than three weeks, and the dealership refuses to put back my car the way it was when was towed to the shop.i need desperatelly need help.

Check engine light came on and dealership stated that it was a sensor and replaced it...that was approximately 1 year ago.knocking sound started a couple weeks ago and then car engine died in traffic 2 times.got the engine restarted and then the oil light came on and engine died for good.took it to one shop who stated that it was a timing belt and would not work on it.had it towed to dealer and they stated that it needed a new engine to the tune of $6,500.00.stated that it was because of sludge build up and not changing oil regularly.car was serviced every 2 to 3k miles for oil changes.car was taken care of and yet dies @ 50,000. Miles?the government needs to force dodge to own up to the failures and buy us consumers new engines that will last longer than 50,000. Miles!i still owe $8,000. On this vehicle!

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine.engine oil light keeps flickering.also, sometimes the check engine light comes on and then off again.i did a code check to find it was the camshaft position sensor and oxygen sensor.i took this vehicle to the dodge dealership. When i spoke to the service adviser and a mechanic, they stated that there is not much i can do, this is an on-going problem with these engines.i was shocked, way to go dodge! even your own employees don't have any faith in your products!i regularly change the oil myself every 3,000 miles with synthetic.

Problems brake rotors and odometer on 2002 dodge intrepid es.*mr the vehicle made an unusual noise and then shut down.the dealer indicated that the start-up alarm system needed to be regulated.the dealer made the repairs but the problem continued.a few days later the noises continued, the odometer stopped and the vehicle didn't indicate what gear it was in.the vehicle was taken to another dealer who corrected the problem. The consumer later learned that the vehicle needed new rotors and brake pads on all four wheels. The vehicle was returned to the sales dealer who was no longer in business. After contacting chrysler, she was told there was nothing they could do.the consumer doesn't think the rotors should have failed within four months or ownership.*ph *nlm

I am the owner of a 2002 dodge intrepid. Let me first start by saying that because i am a female that is on the road alone frequently, i am very conscientious about ensuring that my vehicle is properly maintained, and i have always had my oil changed between 3000-4500 miles.last week while traveling for work, my vehicle started to make a very loud knocking sound while driving down the interstate. I was very near an exit with a service station, so i immediately drove there and check my oil.i was not low on oil.back on the interstate once again, i continued to try to determine where the noise was coming from.without warning,my engine light came on and my car would not run.in heavy traffic, surrounded by many interstate trucks on i-77, i attempted to try to get to the right hand side of the road, narrowly being missed by fast moving traffic several times.after getting my vehicle to the shop, i have been told by a mechanic that my engine needs to be replaced.i do not understand how this could be possible as i have been so extraordinarily careful in making sure my vehicle was properly maintained so that it would last and i would have minimal problems.fortunately, i was not injured and i was able to get off the highway without causing an accident.it certainly could have been worse. The worse that happened is that now i have a $4000-$5000 repair bill on a vehicle that i still owe $9000 on.according to the mechanic, it is impossible to even find a used engine for my car, as all of the engines go bad on this type of vehicle. Since researching my vehicle after this incident, i have seen hundreds of similar situations happening to people all over the country.if there is a defect with this vehicle, i am hoping that the manufacturer takes action and corrects the problem.i only wish i would have been advised of this problem or it could have been corrected before something happened to me on the highway.

My vehicle will intermittently stall.the car can be driving at any speed and the front end will lock up on it as if it were being put in park.the engine light comes on and i to have put the vehicle in park and then restart the vehicle.recently i had a near miss accident which two individuals almost hit me due to the car locking up.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid with 2.7 engine the oil was changed every3k miles as should. In 2008 the car just shut off later took it to dealer with thought that warranty would cover it and they would not. The failure was because of oil sludge. There are very many complaints and mechanic inputs on this engine.. Dodge thinks the owners are at fault when in my case everything was done at the right time to keep it in good shape. The engine is no good there needs to be a recall on this product. It causes the engine to just shut off where ever you are. Some have shut off on highways which could cause serious wrecks. Http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/intrepid/2002/engine/oil_sludge_resulting_in_engine_failure.shtml this site has many users that have complained about the car. Could you please look into this.

I bought a 2002 dodge intrepid in july of 2007. 10,000 miles later on december 5th, 2007my car breaks down and my oil and engine light turn on. I had my oil changed as scheduled so i know its not my fault. I few days later i get my car looked at by a professional and he begins to explain to me that its my timing chain, hydraulic tensioner. In other words, i'm required to buy another engine orget mine fixed. Both my options seem a little unfair and pricey. Im also told that chrysler was the original creator of the 2.7 liter engine found in my 2002 dodge intrepid model. Through further investigating i've found numerous websites dealing with the same complaints. Am i really expected to pay 5,000$ on a new engine for something that's not my fault?

I have a 2002 intrepid with the defective 2.7l. I just had the timing chain tensioner break without prior warning and with nothing wrong with the car. I was told it will be $900 to fix the problem or $2000 to replace it with a non defective engine.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler intrepid.while driving 70 mph, the engine failed and the timing chain snapped.the vehicle was pulled over and the vehicle was towed.the dealer does not want any part in the matter.there are no recalls available for the engine.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 110,000. Engine failure on 2002 dodge intrepid se 2.7l v6. Per mechanic - timing chain failure and other engine damage due to poor oil flow/overheated oil causing sludge and subsequently clogged oil ports and excessive degradation of oil. This happened even though used full synthetic for entire life of car and changed oil regularly (~ every 5-8k miles) oil.

While driving 45 mph the engine failed completely without warning.please provide additional information.

Due to oil sludge build up the engine has failed on my 02 dodge intrepid.we have had all major parts replaced (computer, fuel pump, transmission, etc).only a month after replacing the computer the engine seized up and left my husband stranded.

On 12/18/2002, i purchased a "leftover" 2002 dodge intrepid se.i recently refinanced my home and paid off the car loan less than 3 years later.as soon as i recieved my title for the vehicle, the engine failed!i brought the intrepid to a local mechanic who stated that he saw sludge in the engine and that i should contact sansone route 66 in neptune, nj to replace the engine.i contacted the dealer who stated that the vehicle was out of warrantee for two reasons; first, because the intrepid has 47,000 miles on it (i bought it with 12,801 miles on it) and second, because the mechanic found sludge in the engine which i was told was my fault for not changing the oil!i have changed the oil regularly with mobile1 synthetic oil and used mobil 1 oil filters (confirmed by mechanic) as well as having other oil changes done.this is a complete failure of dodge/chrysler to honor its commitment to repairing faulty engines;i have done research and have observed many others with similar problems.

My 2002 dodge intrepid se began have engine troubles at 125,000 miles.i had the engine flushed in an attempt to stop a new knocking sound from getting worse.while driving with my children on the interstate two days later the engine completely failed.i have been paying the finance on this vehicle for the past year and a half.i am unable to pay the excessive engine repair costs and so the car sits.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning.the vehicle was towed to a dealer and they stated that the timing chain was the cause of the failure.the engine size is a 2.7 liter, v6.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 101,000.

Dt:contact states the engine failed.when taken to a local service dealer they stated there was 1-2 pints of excess liquid in the motor oil.

I bought my car (2002 dodge intrepid) in feb 2005. I had an oil change in apr 05, may 05, aug 05, and oct 05. The car broke down in durham nc on a trip that originated in acwoth ga. The car was taken to morgon dodge/ jeep of durham nc. The mechanic's diagnosis was engine failure due to sludge build-up in the engine. The mechanic stated that this only happens when a person doesn't have the oil changed. He further stated that the cause of the damage to my car was based on sludge build-up of over a year ago. I've only had the car for 7 months. I also have the oil change receipts for the above mentioned oil changes since i've had my car.

Engine just died. Estimates to replace/repair start at $4500, just for the engine, not including labor!i have already had the 2nd rebuilt transmission put in about 3 months ago.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact was driving 50 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that there was an internal engine failure but was unable to provide a concrete diagnosis. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 105,675.

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter engine from honda cars of mckinney in may of 2005 for $7000 and felt very happy about my purchase until a about a year and half later, the engine begin leaking oil. I followed the normal maintenanceschedule and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. I took my dodge to allen samuels of fort worth, texas and they "fixed" my oil leak problem for $893 but was never told about the 2.7 engine design problems which cause major oil sludge problems. After about 2 months, the engine light came on again. I took the vehicle back to the dealership and they ran another check and found that there was no oil leak (engine burns oil now) but there was a "small" transmission leak. I was unable to get any further with the dealership without paying more money? since then, i've been unable to get my car inspected and have received a number of citations for expired inspection. I was even told by a policeman that i could check with the air texas program for repair cost help. I sent in required documents and found out from christian brothers automotive that it would cost more thecar is worth to fix. The state of texas has given me a $3000 voucher to replace this pos dodge. The problem now is that i'm unemployed and can't afford a car that qualifies for this benefit. I am in the process of sending a complaint to robert nardelli with chrysler but i saw this link and thought i would get the word out. The dealership and/or chrysler owe me the cost of the "oil leak" repair, cost to either replace engine/trans and the expenses to try and get it inspected.

I was driving down hwy i75 south bound coming home from work in the middle of rush hr traffic. My car was at 70 mph and was doing great, then it just stopped running with no warning, didn't get hot, nothing just done in one minute, mechanics said i needed a complete rebuild. Crank - cam - oil pump showed scars and metal fragments. Costs of 3500 in parts and machine time, 600 in labor. We couldn't get over fast enough to get off the rd and was able to stop traffic and then push it off to the side, later when picking up the car with a tow dolly was hit by a car, side swiping my other vehicle and leaving me an additional 3000 in repairs.

Car was running fine, then one morning engine light came on and stayed on. Car was taken to service center. Mechanic stated that timing chain must be replaced and engine was full of sludge. $2400 for repair was paid. Approximately 2 weeks later, engine light comes on again. Same service center states new transmission is needed. $2200 for repair was paid. Do not know if old parts are available. Car is 4 years old with approximately 94600 miles. Go figure!

I was driving home from work on friday morning. It was cold so i let the car warm up before driving. I turned a corner and the car died. I had to push it home and had it towed to a local mechanic. The engine is gone. No warning or indication at all that something was wrong! it just died while i was driving!

I was driving to church on may 15, 2005 while i was approaching a stoplight the water temp. Gauge began to move to the dangerously high temp. Side and then the engine began making a ticking sound and white smoke came from the engine, then the engine shuts down completely. The thermostat & water pump failed which led to the oil getting hot inside the engine, which led to oil sludging because of narrow oil ports within the engine, which cause the timing chain to fail and the cylinder heads to become damaged. I called chrysler about this engine defect and they placed the blame on me instead of fixing the defect. I will now have to replace the engine for $4,000 or let it be repossessed. I have a 2002 dodge intrepid se with 2.7l engine.

My 2002 intrepid stalled on the highway less than a year from the purchase date.i was on the expressway doing approximately 60mph, when the engine completely stopped running, the oil light came on...luckily i was able to pull over to the side of the highway safely.the dealership stated that the engine seized due to sludge, however, the oil was changed as scheduled.the estimated bill was $5,000.after investigating this issue, i have found numerous websites dealing with the same issues, with consumers telling the exact same story that i had.it appears to be an issue with the 2.7 liter engine in the intrepid and all of the people who commented were accused of non maintenance of the vehicle because of sludge.chrysler refuses to take the blame.i am still looking into whether or not my vehicle is covered under the lemon law, it has less than 18,000 miles since purchase and has been 1 year since purchase.*la

Engine started knocking, so i stopped at a service station.they said that they do not repair 2.7 liters for chrysler.had it then towed to the chrysler dealership and they said that the motor was blown due to oil sludge and needed to be replaced at a cost of $5700.00.contacted impartial services group, sent them all information on the car, including oil changes.was made an offer by chrysler of $1080.00.turned it down as they have had the same issue with mercedes owners and have taken care of them.talked to the owner of the chrysler dealership in my area and he said "the 2.7 is a junk motor and i wouldn't have one on my lot".he also went on the tell me that the oil ports are to small to allow proper oil flow and the "v" shape in the oil pan does not allow for all of the oil to drain out during oil changes.i contacted chrysler by letter and e-mail and they said sorry, but there is nothing we can do.i am in the process of creating a web site in which will be called the national push my dodge.it will include a date in which i will push my dodge intrepid as far as needed to create awareness that chrysler has turned its back side to middle class americans.

Went to get a routine oil change; mechanics showed me the oil, stating that i needed to bring the car to the dealership due to a possible blown head gasket.in actuality, i need a new engine.the car only has 48000 miles on it.i have owned it for less than 1 year and still make payments.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 15 mph on a city street, a rattling noise came from the engine followed the engine stalling without warning.the engine would not restart, and was pushed to a nearby independent repair shop who determined the engine was blown and needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was not alerted.

When driving at 60-65 mph vehicle will shut off , dashboard lights will turn on, but all other lights will go off. This has occurred three timesover the past few months.

Vehicle: 2002 dodge intrepid se in: [xxx] odometer: 35,100 mi n-service date: 1/1/2002 ate class: d - used. My 2002 dodge intrepid was purchased from byers dublin chevrolet in dublin, ohio i.e. (columbus, ohio) in march of 2003 with 31,000 miles. In june 2003, i began experiencing engine ticking. In july of 2003, i began experiencing rough idling during start up. The manufacturers warranty expires at 36,000 miles. Current mileage is 35,148. I do not want to be stuck with a 5,000 + engine repair bill for a vehicle sold to me with known problems or total engine failure. There are many like complaints on the internet. This vehicle was taken in for mechanical inspection on the front end due to frequent thumping noises during full right and full left turns. Service manager advised that this was only the steering stops working properly. It sounded and felt as if balljoints or struts were failing.[xxx]home[xxx] cell.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

3-18-05 while driving on highway at 45 mph my 2002 dodge intrepid stalled and i was forced to pull over.ilooked at the engine, checked the oil and restartedcar. The engine was spuddering and i was able to get it down te road about 1 mile to randolph chrysler in randolph mass.the service staff stated that either i snaped a connecting rod or spun a bearing and the engine needs to be replaced at a cost of $6000. The car is still at the dealer and i am having trouble getting warranty by net to repair the motor as i have a extended warranty with them. All parties left me stranded 100 miles from home with no way to get home. Its not right.

I drive a well maintained 2002 dodge intrepid.my engine failed without any warning while driving in heavy traffic. Luckily, no one was injured.i have been searching online for another engine and found several websites with posts that this is a very common problem with intrepid owners.i really don't want to buy a new engine and keep this car if there is a flaw in the 2.7 liter engines. If this is such a major problem with these engines, why is chrysler not recalling them. I will be looking into the class action suit against chrysler.

The engine light came on in my 2002 dodge intrepid and i had it analyzed and serviced. The computer analysis indicated that the car needed 4 oxygen sensors.i had these replaced at the cost of about $600.00 and the engine light came on again.this time the car was running rough and acting like it was going to cut off.the computer indicated that i needa map sensor.but on further inspection the mechanic discovered that i need 4 fuel injectors.the car is only 4 years old and it is falling apart.it has almost stalled on me pulling out into traffic and across roadways.since the repairs are not complete i do not know what will happen next.

After having our 2002 dodge intrepid serviced for transmission failure.we noticed engine starting to knock. Wasn't sure if it was transmission or engine.ruled out transmission, took to dealer, dealer says sludge build up in pan causing engine failure, normal oil changes done,at 3400 miles average.manual calls for 7500 mile oil changes, engine bearings bad, replacement costs upwards of 5000.00 working with dealer now on getting it replaced, engine should not have failed this soon.

He stated that the cause of the damage to my car was based on sludge build-up of over a year ago. I've only had the car for 7 months. I also have the oil change receipts for the above mentioned oil changes since i've had my car.

Wehad no injury or permanent failure yet.however, the 2.7 liter engine inthe 2002 dodge intrepid continued to plague us with problems related to sludge buildup.the vehicle had regular 3,000 mile oil changes prior to the first incident, then more frequent changes after.wehad the oil pan drop once to remove sludge buildup, and two oil pressure sending units installed in the last 13 months.i am very familiar with how a vehicle operates, and what to do in emergencies to avoid permanent damage to vehicle parts, and i feel that this is the only reason we have not had a permanent failure of this motor.

Have had 2002 dodge intrepidin the dealers shop in various occasions re: the transmission not going into gear or shifting hard at the wrong speeds.we have had issues with the gears since the day we bought it '2003.we are continuously told nothing is wrong that they cannot duplicate the action.last month it wouldn't go into gear or when it did it moved slowly then the engine shut off. We were told once again they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Recently 8/8/05 it begin kicking and bucking while driving on 8/9/05the service tech told us it is something totally different a "cam sensor" that they "think is possibly bad or more internal issues with the engine."all through it they cannot duplicate what we have been complaining about.the check engine light is on now and the air bag light is on yet, they cannot seem to repair these.we have an extended warranty on the car yet, we feel the dealership is being dishonest with us.we also feel that we have been sold a lemon.we have record of each time the car was at the dealership and they have a journal of all visits in their database.we have kept the car well maintained and at 49k miles it should not be having these issues.

Consumer stated thatvehicle has a great deal of sludge build up in the base of the motor. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer when the problem first occurred in april 2003.dealer toldconsumer that the sensors were bad,and changed them. Currently, the problem recurred.

Oil light flickered once on october 16, 2007, took it to fleet auto service in covington ky, they checked and advised engine needs replaced, jasper engines advised this 2.7l engine has a bad history of the oil return line being blocked by sludge due to poor design and heat, the car has had routine oil changes.

The timing belt would make a slapping noise while the check engine light remained on. Results showed that the vehicle needed a new engine.

Car broke down they say its sludge even though i changed the oil every 3000 miles . I didn't keep my receipts so they won't fix i took a bumper to bumper contract but they say because of sludge they will not fix unless i come up with 6900 dollars for engine and labor. Ive been online and i see these engines are causing a lot of people heartaches my vehicle has 46,000 miles and it just sits there on the porch cause i cant afford to fix it and from what ive been reading about the 2.7 engine i dont know if i would ever invest any more money in a dodge or any 2.7 engine.

Radiator pressure valve failed.two months later the water pump failed. At this time the oil sensor light would come blink, but not that often. When i went to gfet the water pump fixed the told me the timimg chain was loose. I didnt replace it because i didnt have money at the time. Two months lated i take my car to the shop to get the belt replace. They told me that who ever replaced the water pump failed bent some nut connected to the pully.

Loose ground wire to battery posed electrical problems. Also, odometer tampering. Vehicle died while driving. Also, suspension/ steering problems. Dealer replaced all four bulbs on headlamps and high/low beam dimmer switch ,and cleaned outengine hoses, pcv valve and fuel filter.

Car was making noise then 2 days later, itwouldnt start, had it towed, discovered a broken timing chain, dealer needed to reploace the engine due to the damage ,and it cost $5,944.00.now the transmission neededreplacing as well.

When vehicle is first started there's a clucking then rattle noise. T upon inspection of the vehicle dealership indicated that the timing chainbroke and spud a bearing.also, slugs werefound in the engine. This was a common failure with these engine. The entire engine has to be replaced.

The engine failure while my girlfriend driving.

Engine blew up after 70,000 due to engine sludge build up. Had the engine rebuilt costing me thousands and it happened again within 10,000 miles. Cost me thousands again.

2002 dodge intripid blew it's engine 2.7 on 07/002/05 on hwy 50 while i was driving with my daughter in the car.it has been 14 days and the car is still at the dealers not fixed.we are still in a rental while they decide if my car will be fixed.we had to drive apx 2 miles as slow as 5-15 miles per hour to get off the hwy. The service writer says the problem is oil sludge. I think the engine is a hazard to human life and any other vehicle on the highway.

The air conditioner did not work.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the air conditioner condenser was punctured by a foreign object.the puncture site was in front of the condenser.the dealer stated it was not covered under warranty because of the puncture site.the consumer stated the a/c never worked since purchased. *scc

Consumer noticed that vehicle lost radio power, power locks, and interior lights. Dealership serviced vehicle, and technician determined that headlight switch needed to be replaced.

There is a strange unknown beep sound that comes from the inside drivers side of vehicle. This is not the door a jar chime. I am not sure if it has to do with the cd player or stereo being on. Several passengers have noticed this intermittent beeping that seems to occur for no specific given reason or time. The beep is always the same volume, tone and sounds like some type of bmw or honda anti-theft device that beeps instead of chirping a siren or horn. This just occurs sometimes for no specific reason and i have not been able to invoke it. Several passengers thought it was an anti-theft device. The intrepid has keyless entry but no anti-theft device and has stock base cd player. I have tried everything to try and invoke it, locking, unlocking, opening and closing the doors. Also a seperate issue, when driving with cruise control and accelerating with the cruise button an interference type, light clicking noise can be heard in the drivers side speaker during transmission kickdown and acceleration using the cruise control accel button. The speed of the noise increases with the speed of the vehicle and begins to fade until you cannot hear it. This is intermittent and does not always occur. Passengers have also heard and questioned this as well. These issues are a distraction and i would like to know why they occur. Selling dealer cannot duplicate.

Updated

The fuel rail pressure regulator was leaking gasoline and i am still not able to locate the part for my 2002 dodge intrepid.

The fuel filler tube was replaced in january 2003, which was covered by the manufacturer.the same problem occurredagain and the manufacturer refused to pay since the warranty has expired.

Passenger inside door handle broke off at only 41000 miles.called the service dept and am told it is not covered.will have to pay for repair.i will never buy this car again.this is my second intrepid and was too stupid to learn my lesson the first time.dodge is now a memory, i am sorry but i am buying japanese. Everytime i have a problem they either cannot find the cause or it is not covered by the warranty how could a handle break when i take care of the car so well. Unbelievable!another lost patriotic american changing to foreign vehicles.i hope they go bankrupt!

Consumer states that automatic door lock does not work.she had replaced the one in the front door.thedoors automatically lock at 15 mph, but will not release until she cut the vehicle off. But the lock in the back will not release until all the other automatically release, and then has to release it manually.consumer states that the mechaniccan repair it, but it will cost approximately $250.00 per door. She feels this is a safety issue, because if something happens and the passengers cannot get out of the vehicle.

The transmission shifter will only go into park every once in a while, especially when its warmed up.

Blown motor.

2002 dodge intrepid with oil leak. Consumer states that the vehicles engine has a design flaw which produces high levels of engine oil sludge.after the oil leak was repaired, the check engine light illuminated two months later, the consumer was told the vehicle had a transmission leak.

My 2002 dodge intrepid has had many problems since i bought it roughly four years ago. I was informed that it had a rebuilt engine and transmission. Just recently it has been having problems shifting out of know where. I was at the stop light and when it turned green i pressed on the gas and it did not want to go. I let up the gas and it kicked in to first gear. When i am driving and getting up to about 30-35 mph it would go up to 3rpm and not shift. I do regular oil changes on both the transmission and engine. This problem can cause an accident because the car is just doing whatever it wants to. After reading all these other complaints it is very similar to my problem. I am understanding now why dodge stopped making intrepid. I am very disappointed and will never buy dodge again.

Engine just died. Estimates to replace/repair start at $4500, just for the engine, not including labor!i have already had the 2nd rebuilt transmission put in about 3 months ago.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph when he observed smoke coming from under the hood. The vehicle was pulled over and towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was told that the inner core of the transmission was leaking transmission fluid. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 146,000. The vin was unavailable.

Car began with not accelerating. It would feel as though it was sticking. I would be driving and between it changing from 2nd to 3rd gear (40-50mph), it would jerk or feel like it was popping into the third gear. I bought the car at 19,000 miles, took it to the dealership at 30,000 miles and they said there were no fault codes, (warranty ended at 36,000 miles) transmission ok.now at 50,000 miles, my car has electrical and internal transmission problems. It will cost me anywhere from $1700-$2100. I have not had the car a full year.called the manufacturer, nothing they can do for me, called the dealership where car was purchased, nothing they can do for me.

Trans failed @ 57,000 mis.2002 dodge intrepid had 60,000 mi warranty so it cost me $500 deductible to have it fixed. Car now has 130,000 mis & has been ok since.

Transmission intermittently bump shifts or slams into gear. When driving at around 40-50mph and flooring it to accelerate then letting off the accelerator pedal there is sometimes a bang or bump, sometimes harsh felt in the front end or transmission. This is sometimes so hard that passengers feel it and complain in regard to it. Bump is sometimes felt on deceleration in lower gears nearing a stop. Sometimes feels like it's shifting rough in lower gears. Gear selector feels stuck sometimes after parking and trying to shift into reverse. Transmission sometimes makes whining noise, not sure if this is normal. Transmission seems to hesitate sometimes before kicking down in low gear or upshifting. Took vehicle into dealership, shop foreman says there are no updated transmission control module (tcm) revisions after checking. Also states no fault codes were found from transmission. States that transmission issues could not be duplicated.

2002 dodge intrepid. Consumer states when stopping the vehicle, it made a clunk sound and the transmission light came on.the consumer stated almost from the time she purchased the vehicle, she had problems with the transmission sensors. As soon as she drove over 45 mph, the sensor light illuminated and the engine would rev between 2500-300 rpms.it would stay in that position until the she pulled over and turned off the engine and re-started it.the sensors were replaced, however one week later, the problem resurfaced.

After a short 5-10 minute drive, the transmission kicks into a low gear and will not shift.i can travel about 40 mph with the tachometer reading around 4500 rpms.it sounds like the transmission is going to blow up.i had it checked by a transmission place and even though the check engine light has stayed on for the past 2 months, they cannot isolate the problem. The recommendations of the error code does not reveal the parts as problems.i can turn the car off and put it in park and the problems stops for another 5-10 minutes if i am lucky.it seems there are many complaints about this on this website and it sounds like it is time for someone to force dodge to fix their problems.i want the call to last long enough for it to be paid off and from reading others problems, i doubt that i will make it.one word needs to be said: recall.

Transmission failed when vehicle accelerated.rpms got very high, and vehicle stalled. Consumer tookvehicle back to the dealer, and was told that the problem could not be duplicated. Dealer put the vehicle on the diagnostic machine yet they were unable to diagnose the problem.the brakes failed 7 times. Updated 02/06/06.

When you first start the car it would not move when you put it in any gear, then when it did finally move you may start moving and then it was like the transmission was shifted into neutral. Took the car in to the dealer, and had it checked, said it was a quart low on fluid, car was sent back home with me, a few days later did the same thing, took it back and the dealer where the transmission was replaced, new transmission would not shift out of low gear, had dealer tow it in, stated to me the the transmission controler needed reprogramming, it was reprogrammed and sent back out on the road, about 100 miles later it was a repeat, would not shift out of low gear, had the vehilce towed in again, dealer replaced transmission and controller, picked the car up from the dealer, i found a bracket that they had left loose that was within a fraction of coming in contact with the rack and pinion steering, returned to dealer to have bracket reattached. I have filed lemon law on this car.

I had my car less than a year when the transmission started stalling for no reason at all. I could be anywhere and at about 40-50 miles/hour the car would shake a little and not come out of first gear.i have taken this car all over town and get a different repsonse from everyone i talk to. Of course, the dealership told me they couldnt do anything for me. I will never ever buy anotherdodge as long as i live.

Transmission started failing to go into gear.revved up rpm's to get the transmission to shift.engine light came on and transmission would not shift into fourth gear.car would stall when attempting to pull out from stop and was extremely dangerous.

I own a 2002 dodge intrepid it has approx. 125,000 miles on it just got out of the shop 300 for transmission and it is not fixed it started to rain really hard mid june 10 since then car goes into what i know now as limp mode it goes into second gear and wont come out unless you pull over turn off and restart was fixing to call actual dodge place then read on the internet of all the problems that are being had with these transmissions and engines as well.my car has started over heating.no warning has fluids.for 300 had everything services with fluids etc and an additive put in and told don't know how to replace transmission then i read person after person saying they are replacing the transmission over and over again and it is quitting in the middle of the road or continues to do what mine does.i am afraid i am going to get hit i was almost hit about a week ago by a diesel because it went to about 43 then jerked and went into second gear diesel right on my tail furious because i had to slow down rpm went up to 4 afraid going to blow the motor up no shoulder due to construction was trying to get out of the way before he slammed into me it is scary when it jerks i am afraid at some point i wont be able to get out of the way or i will be in a bad area and have to shut it off and it will lock up like so many others have.so now i don't know what to do with the car.

2002 dodge intrepid. 2.7l motor, with a 42le automatic transmission. With only 84000 miles on the odometer, and being driven quite moderately by my wife, this transmission failed, costing me $1714.00 in repairs.this was my first, and only chrysler vehicle purchase. I have had ford and gm products that have gone well over 100000 with never a transmission problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 50 mph a loud noise was heard coming from the engine.the vehicle slowed and another loud noise was heard.it was pulled off the road without incident.the engine restarted; however the vehicle would not go into reverse and would only operate at 10 mph.it was towed to an independent repair shop where the transmission was replaced.one month later while approaching a stop, the vehicle vibrated and the engine overheated and failed.the vehicle was towed back to the independent repair shop where the engine was rebuilt. The manufacturer has not been alerted.

Dt*:the contact stated while traveling 70 mph the vehicle stalled.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who informed the contact the transmission needed to be replaced

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.the contact stated that the transmission failed in the vehicle.the manufacturer would not assist because there were no recalls available; however, she was able to locate quite a few complaints pertaining to her vehicle on the nhtsa web site.the current and failure mileages were less than 55,350.

My transmission failed at less than 52000 miles with no warning other than the check engine light, with trouble codes identifying the torque converter lockout circuit. The transmission had extensive internal damage as verified by the dodge dealer, who suggested a remanufactured transmission, and mr. Transmission, who detailed the internal damage, including the pump, and planetary gear system.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph the check engine light came on and the transmission started slipping. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced.the contact did not call the manufacturer. The contact noticed several complaints regarding the transmission for the same year, make and model and was concerned that there was no recall.the failure mileage was 79,000.

Did not work even whenputtingfoot on the gas. She had to shut the car off in order to get it into the right gear. It felt like the gears were stuck.thedealer told her that valves in the transmission were stuck.the contacthad to cut the car off10 times a day in order to get it to go into gear.

The intrepid has a history of transmission failure, this can be deadly at any given time.once i was driving on route 22 and the vehicle was just trying to cut off in the middle of stepping on the gas.that'sa tragedy waiting to happen.car is currently in dealer waiting for the transmission to be repaired.

After owning my vehicle for only 16 months, i am having to have the transmission replaced.i and my family almost had a serious accident with the car stalling it could have been a serious situation because the car would stall and completely stop at any give moment.i am also shocked that you can purchase a vehicle and have to pay for such substanstial repairsand that dodge does not stand behind it's product.

Updated

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while traveling 35 mph, the contact felt the vehicle begin to hesitate.in addition, the vehicle's engine light remains illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the base light computer systems needs to be replaced.according to the owner's manual, the failure is due to the transmission.the vin, engine size, and # of cylinders were unknown.the current mileage is 46 and the failure mileage was unknown.

While driving 50 mphtransmission failed.owner was able to get the vehicle to the nearest dealer for diagnostic test. Dealer stated the core return needed to be replaced.

My wife's 2002 dodge intrepid, has operated well until a week ago. After about ten minutes of driving, the engine light comes on, the transmission drops harshly into second gear and stalls in the middle of the busy, busy street. A trip to our long trusted mechanic revealed a common known problem within the auto repair industry that the 2.7l chrysler automatic transmission usually needs replacement at about 50k on the 1998-2002 intrepid models. The vehicle has been regularly maintained and carefully operated since purchasing. The opening of the transmission by my mechanic revealed no metal filings within the system. A change of sensor, filter, and fluids were hopped to solve the problems with the warning by my mechanic to start saving up quickly for more transmission work soon from his experience with this model. Two days later the problem recurred with the same problem. I contacted chrysler on november 10, 2005, spoke to davey, to make a case file claim report. I asked what will be done in my situation. Davey transferred me to another person. Forty minutes later, tony picked up the phone. I asked what chrysler will do as the car is about a year out of warranty. His response was 'nothing'. When i asked to have a contact number to speak with the chrysler zone manger, tony stated that there was 'priority information' and he would not give out that information. Tony also stated that even if he did it would do no good as they would do nothing either. I completed my discouraging conversation with tony by asking why should my next automobile be a chrysler product? since my wife is a public school teacher and cannot wait indefinitely for chrysler's assistance, the two of us waited until the traffic was less and crept in first or second gear to a nearby recommended transmission shop for repair to paid out of our pocket.

Car was making noise then 2 days later, itwouldnt start, had it towed, discovered a broken timing chain, dealer needed to reploace the engine due to the damage ,and it cost $5,944.00.now the transmission neededreplacing as well.

Transmission failure 2002 dodge intrepid.

Dt*: the contact stated that the transmission, radiator, oil thinning unit, and harmonic balancer have all been replaced.there was concern expressed that this should not be normal wear and tear even though the vehicle has 69000 miles on it.

Oil light came on while sitting at red lights. Changed the oil with 10w40 and seemed to correct the problem until the weather started to get hot. 2 weeks ago while slowing down for a red light, my transmission shifted down hard. When i started to leave the intersection, i noticed that the transmission would not shift. I can turn the car off and restart and runs fine for a while. Now its doing this pretty regular.

Transmission failure, and shifter not correctly working.

My car's transmission became disengaged from the third or fourth gear and dropped down to second gear while i was on the freeway. The rpm gauge went up to 5000 rpms before i let off the gas realizing the car would not shift. With oncoming traffic behind me and my car preferring to be in 2nd gear, i was at risk of being rear-ended. Researching the problem revealed that it was a transmission speed sensor that had failed and further investigation into online forums for problems with the make and model revealed that others had similar issues in the past with their vehicles.

Transmission failed at less than 38000 miles, 2002 model yr. Engine light came on and high rpms at 55mph.transmission not shifting out of lower gears. Dealership says internal damage.

The car has only 65, 000 miles on it and the transmission has failed while no longer under warranty.while driving the engine light came on the rpm's revved and the car would not go over 35 miles an hour.diagnostics equipment has said the modulators and electronic componenets for the transmission need to be replaced just short of rebuilding the transmission.the car has been serviced regularly and driven under normal conditions.i think this type of failure is unwarranted.i have been told by my mechanic that there is a trend in dodge 2.7 engines and transmissions.

Consumer complained about a transmission problem. Consumer smelled smoke, and there were flames under the vehicle. There was epoxy sealant where the fire started.

Consumer complained about automatic transmissiongear position indicated (prndl) problem.while vehicle is parked, the consumer's child can move the gear shift without the key being in the ignition.the vehicle was in the drive way and the consumer's son inadvertentlywas able to push gear shift in to neutral, this resulted in a collision off of a rock retaining wall.the child was slightly shaken up inside the vehicle.the manufacturer and the dealer are aware of the problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while the vehicle was in park, without the keys in the ignition, the contact's unattended grandchild shifted the column shift and the vehicle rolled downhill and crashed into a tree.no injuries were sustained.the vehicle sustained moderate damage to the rear and left side panel area.a police report was taken.the dealer was alerted.

2002 dodge intrepid se; timing chain problems, hydraulic tensioner, motor seized up.

When you first start driving the car, it winll not accelerate no higher then 40-50 mph. It would jerk or feel like it was popping or about to stall.the car will not shift into no gears.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid that i purchased on april 11th, 2003 and i have been hearing a lot of reports on the gen 3 seat belts, and i would like to have mine replaced. I have two small children who use the seat belts, a 5 year old and a 2 month old.

My seat belts in this car are too easy to open.all it takes for an article of clothing to hit the button and it pops open.i have three young children riding in my car with me and the other day my daughter dropped her juice cup onto the latch when she fell asleep and it opened.i was unaware that it opened until my older daughter stated what had happened.i contacted the dealership and they said that there was no recall issused for the seatbelts, however i feel that this is a major safety issue.later that night my husband went to the car and just rested his arm in the back on the button very gently as if a child might and it opened.i think this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, as well as other people made aware that this might happen to them.

The driver's seat belt housing attachment blocked the view from the window when trying to overcome blind spot.the belt housing attachment to the vehicle's frame was very wide. The windows glass also seemed difficult to see through.the vehicle was taken tot he dealer and was traded in for another vehicle. *nlm

The consumer later learned that the vehicle needed new rotors and brake pads on all four wheels. The vehicle was returned to the sales dealer who was no longer in business. I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid brand new, this is my second daimlerchrysler vehicle that has not held up well that i consider a lemon. At 26 miles, the abs light came on for a few seconds, then turned off, there was almost no braking power. I had to quickly downshift into low gear to slow down the car. This has happend several times. At first i thought it may have been things breaking in. Dodge dealers just deleted the "internal cab failure fault code" and did nothing to try and fix this. Later the steering began squeaking during low speed manuvers. Then i experienced play in the steering wheel. At 2000 miles the vehicle would wander and would almost never drive straight. After 2 dealership alignments and 1 independent, the steering wheel is still off center. 3 different oem tires rotated to front completely worn on outer edges, abnormal tire wear and feathering. Suspension squeaks loudly at times. At about 500 miles the transmission would sometimes slam into 3rd gear, shift rough in lower gears, bump, hesitate, stumble. Dodge dealership always "could not duplicate" the problem. I almost crashed when driving and front wheel hit moderate puddle when vehicle was thrown into another lane. I was told by the service manager "those things happen". I have written and spoke to daimlerchrysler reps many times, they deny there is any problem. At about 13,000 miles the engine would clank when starting sometimes (sounds like not firing up properly). I have never had these problems with any other vehicle, even front wheel drive and do not see how they can get away with this. There are many others experiencing similar premature problems that should not be occuring as such. I have started a website against daimlerchrysler [xxx] - email address is [xxx] - address: [xxx]san leandro, ca [xxx].parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Brakes failed initially at about 30 miles, at about 40mph i hit brakes lightly, brakes didn't work, brake pedal felt rough and abs light illuminated. Several seconds later abs light turned off and brakes felt as if they were working again. This happened again several hundred miles later and was similar. About 200 miles after that i once hit the brakes hard to slow down, they felt rough and didn't work. Brakes have worked since. I assumed that the brakes needed to be broken in. I was reluctant to mention it because the dealer's service department can rarely duplicate or troubleshoot a problem. Today i spoke to the shop foreman and he was able to pull codes from the brake controller and found a failure code. The dealer was not able to work on the vehicle today so i will be bringing it back asap.

I have had steering/suspension and brake related issues from normal driving in the bay area since 200 miles after purchasing vehicle new. I have had to pay for a professional computerized full precision alignment and balancing of two tires that were out of balance from the factory. Two dodge/chrysler dealers and wheel specialsts have checked and adjusted tire pressure. Vehicle seems to drive straight more often but still drifts to the left, sometimes to the right. Front wheels feel like they are slipping bad over bumps even at low speeds. Very intermittently steering wheel becomes harder to turn and is much more sensitive all of a sudden. Vehicle does not seem to be handling or taking bumps very well at times. Wheel does not usually return smoothly or consistantly, sometimes jerky and sometimes slow, usually off center, oversteering or understeering. Steering wheel sometimes needs constant attention, having to remind wheel where to go. Wheel will move by itself excessively at times on bumpy roads or on slanted roads sometimes almost making complete turns on it's own. Sometimes steering wheel has looseness. Clunk in steering still continues wheen wheel is turned sharp and braking. Excessive amount of groaning noise wheen turning wheel at times. I had to brake hard the other day and was able to lock vehicle up into a heavy skid although vehicle has abs.vehicle feels unstable sometimes and over bumpy roads sometimes. Every once and a while you can hear squeaking from struts. I am not the only person experiencing these issues. I have witness testimony on video and video proof. I have video of massive tire squealing at low speed 15mph manuvering in parking lot. My girlfriend does not want to drive the car also experiencing and complaining of these issues.transmission still hesitates or stumbles sometimes. Two dealerships say there is nothing wrong with car and couldn't duplicate anything abnormal with steering. Chrysler does nothing. Car is unsafe at times.

Had to replace front brakes 5 times over the course of 4 1/2 years. Also had rotors turned and replaced 4 times. The last set of rotors were warped within 6 months. They were drilled and slotted rotors to help heat escape, but were soon destroyed. I now have 61,000 miles on my car. I used an independent shop to replace my brakes. On my last check-up at the dealership, i asked the serviceman to check my brakes. The new set have been squealing. When i was later called to p/u my car, the serviceman said there was absolutely nothing wrong with my brakes. When i drove out the driveway of the dealership and stopped at the exit, my brakes squealed. This will continue to be an expensive repair.

We have a 2002 dodge intrepid with the police package.the vehicle has 21,000 miles and we have replaced the brake rotors 4 times.we are a security firm and thus we have never been in a high speed chase and only drive the vehicle on residential streets.we have three other different vehicles and have not had brake problems with them.it was suggested by the dealer that we are misusing the brakes.i have talked with another police agency in the area and they have also had the same problems as we.i believe there is a problem with the brakes that come with the police package option.

We are experiencing an on-going problem with the brakes on my 2002 dodge intrepid.the brake pedal sticks after applying the brakes.when this happens the brake pedal must be pulled up with your foot.initially we experienced a slight sticking of the pedal when depressing on the brakes, as the pedal was going down.the problem is intermittent and takes you by surprise but has not caused an accident.the manufacturers dealer service has not been able to resolve the issue after several attempts.we are concerned that the problem may get worse but the dealer where we bought the car has given up on resolving the problem and the manufacturer has not yet responded to our messages.

Leaving a parking lot space, car suddenly had trouble turning, and felt as though tire locked up and i was unable to control steering properly resulted in crash into a cement light post in parking lot. Damages approx. $ 2,500 to car. Car being repaired.

Steering makes clunking sounds and tends to be very "swishy" while driving.i have taken to dealership twice and complained, both times they stated the steering was within specs even though my personal mechanic had found problems.*la

My pregnant wife was leaving a friends wedding with my three year old in the car, she was turning around on a side street she lost all steering i was there in a separate car i went out and checked for the problem. I found that both bolts that connect the inner tie rods to the rack and pinion steering had been broken completely. This is my wife's daily driver she has it on the freeway everyday.

Steering issues still continue. After steering was feeling loose for some time it felt as if it tightened up all of a sudden. Slight vibration once felt in steering wheel on freeway. Steering wheel slightly flopped to the right today while driving and steering seemed to drift. Steering felt jerky and would cause vehicle to almost swerve. Steering does not feel normal. Manufacture is supposed to arrange for district technician to check at dealership. Steering jerks usually during hard acceleration and did not do this when vehicle was new until recently. I am concerned that the steering my fail or not perform as it should. I have had a witness drive my car for verification. Steering attitude intermittently changes. I am used to driving front wheel drive chrysler vehicles and the steering attitude should not change as such.

While driving at any speed, the consumer experienced a problem with the steering control.the steering became difficult while driving or turning. The vehicle has been to the dealer on several occasions. The dealer replaced the power steering pump and lubricated the steering column and the problem still continued. The vehicle is back at the dealer.

I have brought this vehicle to the dealership twice where i purchased it complaining of intermittent looseness in steering, squeaking and clunking. The dealer could not duplicate these issues, squeaking was supposedly tire noise, clunking was "just bushings". My right front tire is severly worn on the outer edges at only 5900 miles, the left tire wear is normal. Dealer would not explain or asses why this is. Today i had the steering wheel turned sharp to the left and there was a vibrating noise as if metal was hitting against metal. I called someone out to witness this. About two miles later i was driving and the steering wheel was difficult to turn all of a sudden and steering felt heavy. Vehicle all of a sudden turns sharper and steering responds different than usual. When trying to investigate issue and manuvering the steering back and fourth the vehicle was swerving excessively as it never had before. Front end felt as if it was taking bumps harder than usual and was even hopping slighly over some bumps. I could hear noise in the passenger side front wheel area. I immediately brought the vehicle to the dealer. The shop foreman road tested and wouldn't say much about the steering. I explained that the wheel was always much easier to turn and explained that the steering is all of a sudden responding differently. Several bumps felt harsh from the passenger side where they had not felt as harsh before. I could hear and feel a light clunking during braking three times from the passenger seat. Shop foreman didn't really seem to notice much wrong as usual. He did see the tire wear and was like "wow". He is going to ask the service manager for permission to put the vehicle on their alignment machine. They have looked at the vehicle on the lift twice and never found anything visually wrong. I have made an appointment to have the vehicle looked at by another vehicle for a second opinion. I feel unsafe in this vehicle and unfortunately no other alternative to get to work.

Loose ground wire to battery posed electrical problems. Also, odometer tampering. Vehicle died while driving. Also, suspension/ steering problems. Dealer replaced all four bulbs on headlamps and high/low beam dimmer switch ,and cleaned outengine hoses, pcv valve and fuel filter.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge intrepid.while driving approximately 10 mph around a tight curve, the vehicle jerked to the right without warning.sludge was removed from the vehicle on three occasions.the contact heard a ticking sound coming from the steering.he stated that the passenger side front tie rod is bent, but the bolt is still attached.the tire has excessive wear and had to be changed three times.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was 62,000 and failure mileage was 30,000.

I took my 2002 dodge intrepid to dealership to check out a vibration in the front end of the vehicle and to have some other service performed. I told them the front end (wheels, steering) vibrated at certain speeds and when braking. Service was performed and i was told that the vibration was a "tire problem". As i drove the vehicle home the vibration proceded to get worse. When i checked the vehicle it took all of 5 minutes to find that the right inner tie rod end was worn out and the source of the vibration. I have subsequntly found that this problem is endemic of the intrepid, and as such should have been readily visible to a dodge mechanic

Rack & pinion failed.reported to dealer more than once after initial clunking noise.dealer failed to identify the problem.the problem occurred at 39,000 miles on the car.called chrysler and they said since warrenty had expired they could not do anything.new rack and pinion installed by local workshop.

My wife was driving our 2002 dodge intrepid coming from my mothers house, luckily it was at low speed. While she was making a left hand turn the upper steering control arm on the driver side had broken off at the rack and pinion portion of the steering control leaving the car unable to steer. It was then towed to my near by auto mechanic. The next day it was discovered that the rack and pinion was defective at 99,000 miles i had looked for the bolt that held this arm into place it was a grade 8 bolt that stripped out of the rack. Luckily she wasn't on a interstate going 65 mph while this happened with our 2 kids as this would have left a catastrophe or death upon all three dodge really needs to make a plan to recall these cars as it shows to be defective materials.

Bought car , driver side has all problems thumping in wheel, leaking water in car when rain , door , window will notclose,

36 miles after the 30000 mile warranty, i took my car in because the glove compartment is separating from the dash. I was told it is not covered under the warranty. I am now only covered for power train now until 70000 miles. They offered to cover parts but i have to pay for the labor. I was looking at 5 -7 hours of labor.

Loose ground wire to battery posed electrical problems. Also, odometer tampering. Vehicle died while driving. Also, suspension/ steering problems. Dealer replaced all four bulbs on headlamps and high/low beam dimmer switch ,and cleaned outengine hoses, pcv valve and fuel filter.

After several days of owning the vehicle the driver side door has become noticeably out of alignment. The dealer was able to correct this and realign the door assembly. Also, i noticed that the rear light piece on the top part of the trunk seems to have been cut sloppy from the factory. The bottom edge is jagged and seems to have been poorly trimmed from the factory. I notice this when opening my trunk and when washing the vehicle and feel that it is tacky. Selling dealer stated that no one usually sees that so they are cut like that from the factory. The trunk also makes a rubbing sound when opening, which sounds like the wire cover rubbing. Vehicle includes a trunk cargo net with the floor mounting hooks not exposed and seems as if you are supposed to tear holes in the carpet from looking at the cargo net instructions. I would like to be able to use the cargo net for groceries but i do not feel comfortable tearing holes in my carpet. I expected a quality vehicle for the price i paid and it so far does not seem that i have recieved a decent quality vehicle with all the issues i am experiencing.

Vehicle lately has not felt safe enough to drive at times. Steering wheel moves itself excessively at times and moves excessively to imperfections in roads. Steering continues to drift right or left. Clunk still heard in steering every once and a while. Vibration in steering wheel sometimes on smooth surfaces at higher speed. I had vehicle towed to another dealership as a precaution. I am trying another dealership to try to have my steering issues corrected. Dealership adjsuted tire pressure and stated that steering was fine after road test. Supposed chrysler representative was there and supposedly test drove the vehicle as well and stated it drove fine as well. Shop foreman stated vibration was because wheels needed to be balanced. Also stated that it's normal for vehicles to drift when you let go of the wheel. They acknowledged the excessive right tire wear and agreed to do an alignment. Dealership stated they did not have time and service advisor stated an alignment could take 7 hours. 7 hours......? i'm afraid they are going to try and align the vehicle to counter these issues or it's going to take that long because there's a problem. This is scheduled for next week. Driving home from the dealer along sloped freeway onramp, after letting hands off the wheel the vehicle almost made a complete right turn on it's own. On the freeway vehicle was drifting to the right and to the left. After accelerating from a complete stop and front wheel hit a bumpy part in the road the steering wheel turned itself to the left. Steering wheel still feels like it sticks and does not return like it should. I have driven a chrysler town & country as a test and it drives straight when you let off the wheel, the wheel does not move by itself as the intrepid even over really bumpy roads. The wheel always returns how it should. I have had several people drive my car and they all agree even before i explained how i felt about it's steering. Chrysler's design is poor if this is normal.

Yesterday i had a 4 wheel computerized alignment performed. It was difficult and sometimes almost impossible to tell the car was out of alignment because it would drift to the left or right. That night when pulling out away from friends house, having wheel turned sharp and waiting at idle something in the front end was vibrating and it would change when wheel was moved. Later that night steering wheel tightened up as it had before all of a sudden when driving. Wheel was really difficult to turn all of a sudden, steering became much more sensitive all of a sudden where it previously was not. When braking or accelerating wheel would feel even move difficult to turn and almost stuck. I tried to get a friend to drive the car. She started to drive it in a parking lot, i asked her to manuver with the car and after driving for a minute she didn't want to because she felt the car was nothandling well and didn't feel right. I manuvered in the parking lot and at 15 mile low speed manuvering and sharp turns tires were squealing as if performing high speed manuvers. At one time i was able to send the vehicle into a controlled skid although it has abs. I could not get car to skid again and abs seemed to be working fine. I noticed a clunk felt in the steering assembly when braking hard at lower speeds. The steering attitude and characteristics should not intermittently change. The car still wonders on the freeway and wheel needs constant attention. This car does not feel safe to drive and i don't know why i'm continually being told it's normal. I have driven 3 dodge intrepids and know how they should drive. I even had someone who has driven 3 second generation rental car intrepids and he didn't like the way my intrepid drove at times either. The steering assembly seems to be deteriorating quickly over time and sometimes fails to perform as it should. The vehicle also came out of the factory out of alignment and with two tires that needed to be balanced and since corrected.nlm

I have made a previous comment in regard to my new 2002 dodge intrepid's steering (sometimes squeaking in lock to lock condition (end of u-turn at about 10mph), clunking, steering once feeling loose and drifting to the left). I had also mentioned that the shop foreman didn't really know what he could do about it since the steering was visually inspected and seemed fine. The shop foreman offered to put the vehicle on the lift and tighten up steering related bolts. The steering now feels more solid and has a better feel to it however i would like to inform you that the squeaking/squealing when wheel is turned all the way on u-turns at about 10mph still persists. The clunking that occurs when the wheel is turned nearly all the way and the vehicle is stopped still persits. I felt the clunking in the front end twice today in a parking lot. The clunking feels like it is the steering assembly. I am extremely unhappy having to be concerned with a car that is so new with such low mileage and has been taken care of. I would like to know why i am having these issues and what is causing them.

Steering sometimes squeals/squeaks at end of u-turn when steering wheel is turned all the way (lock to lock condition) at about 10mph. Steering began to sometimes slightly drift to the left even on flat roads where previous vehicle did not. This first occured at about 200 miles. The condition was unfortuantely not noticed on vehicle test drive. At about 3000 miles issue persists and now sometimes clunk is felt in steering at times when wheel is turned and stopping. This usually occurs when steering is turned sharp then vehicle is stopped. Steering once felt loose and floppy suddenly then seemed to correct itself after driving for about 20 miles.brought vehicle in for service at dealer due to issue. Shop foreman called and stated that he could not duplicate any of the issues. Went on road test with shop foreman and was able to get steering to squeek at the end of sharp turns several times. He thought this was caused by the paint on the road with the tires. I told him this has also occured otherwise. I was able to get steering to clunk several times and he acknowledged this and stated that not much could be done since steering assembly seemed fine. He offered to check and tighten steering related bolts and did this. Steering currently has better feel and seems to perform better, not sure yet if these issues are completely corrected. I am still concerned because i had countless steering problems with my previous intrepid, which resulted in an accident. I assumed this issue was only with that intrepid since it seemed to be a lemon. I assumed that a new 2002 dodge intrepid would not have these kinds of issues.

Updated

2002 dodge intrepid. Rear strut bracket pulled lose from the frame causing severe swaying in the rear end of the vehicle. Upon taking vehicle to repair center it was determined that there was no impact, or reckless care that would have caused the damage and that it appears the welds on the strut bracket just came loose.

Our 2002 dodge intrepid is a terrible automobile just like the 2002 caravan that we previously had that dallas dodge replaced with this intrepid because daimler chrysler does not stand behind there vehicles.*la

Bought car , driver side has all problems thumping in wheel, leaking water in car when rain , door , window will notclose,

The contact stated the when starting the vehicle, the steering wheel began vibrating excessively; however, the vehicle did not move when the accelerator pedal was engaged. After a while, the vehicle beganaccelerating at a rapid speed which caused the driver to lose control. Three mechanics were unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer has not been notified and is aware that they contact is unable to pay the repair cost.the vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 77,000.

The speedometer was giving a false reading.every 100 miles the vehicle adds 10 additional miles.

Consumer statedvehicle at any speed will suffersuddenacceleration. Dealer notified.

While driving on the highway, the back window of the car flew off in one piece and shattered on the road.there was nothing about the window that was unusual or damaged prior to the incident.

The driver's seat belt housing attachment blocked the view from the window when trying to overcome blind spot.the belt housing attachment to the vehicle's frame was very wide. The windows glass also seemed difficult to see through.the vehicle was taken tot he dealer and was traded in for another vehicle. *nlm

Tires consistently lose air pressure and must be re-inflated anywhere from 5 to 14 days apart.taken to tire dealer who inspected the wheels and tires on various occasions over the last three years and told that the tires are fine, and the lost air pressure is due to the wheels.
