Dear sir's,i made an appointment and went to the dodge dealership to have a recall defective maintenance performed on the clock spring in my 2000 dodge grand caravan, which has made my driver side airbag inoperable. They advised me that the part is not in stock and that there are over 6,000 on back order. They gave me a phone number to call so that could get a reference and or case number. I was advised that by doing this i would be covered. Is there further need for any other actions on my part?

The clockspring and steering column in our 200 dodge grand caravan has been replaced several times, including several times under warranty, yet still rattles and makes noises.i have been advised by the zone office that it is indeed a safety problem (relating to the airbag) and they recommend i continue to get it fixed each time it breaks.

Campaign i 04v480000, action number ea04013.i currently have a non function airbag and horn in my 2000 grand caravan.i have called two local dealers that have both said i am covered under the above recall, however, the required part has no date for re-stock.interestingly, i can find the part widely available on the internet.so i am driving a vehicle with a non-functioning air bag, that will not pass inspection.so i see it as chrysler has found a simple way to avoid correcting a mandated recall simply by not having the part available to their dealers.is there anything that can be done about this?

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving at various speeds, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. I own a 2000 dodge caravan.i recently had to replace a faulty clock spring. This is something that has been recalled on earlier models and was previously under lifetime warranty.i have 53,000 miles on the car and do not feel this should have been defective.

Consumer was traveling about 35mpg on a side street and another vehicle ran a stop sign and ran intoside ofconsumer's vehicle.vehiclewas totaled.driver's side airbags didn't deploy, and there were no injuries.

While driving 55 mph, the consumer hit a deer. The air bag did not deploy. However, the consumer received a recall letter regarding the clock spring. Please provide any further information.

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan. I am quite certain my clockspring has broken and my airbag light stays lit all the time, and my horn and cruise control does not work.i believe chrysler has not issued a recall for the 2000 model, but only for the 1996-1998 models. Yet searching the web reveals many, many problems with the 2000 models as well. This is a safey issue causes by chrysler's equippment and should be a provided free repair. Chrysler does not offer to repair it for free.i am currently out of my printing career and am having difficulty finding work again, so the $250 plus to have this repaired is a heavy load at this time. Chrysler should take care of this for all the 1999 and 2000 models as well.i know the nhtsa is investigating this, but with hundreds of complains already filed, how much more information does it need to act? i dont know the process, but what should i do now? this is a saftey issue, and this is our familiy vehicle. Plus, the annual inspection is coming up in less than 4 months, and it will not pass without the horn and cruise and airbag broken. Thank you for any information and advice you can give me. Thanks again!john calogrides

Vehicle was stopped and rear ended, neither airbag deployed. Damage so far $ 10000.00, vehicle still at dealer. One person was injured in the accident.

I like to file a complaint regarding 2000 dodge grand caravan. This vehicle has experienced the same problem other owners have complained about regarding the horn and air bag not functioning due to a defective clockspring harness. Chrysler has refused to recall this component or acknowledge this as a safety issue other than saying it should be fixed. Most mini-van owners transport families in these vehicles and it is a shame that chrysler won't do anything about it.*la

Consumer was traveling 45mph on highwayin a single lane, andvehicle in front stoppedsuddenly. Consumer's vehicle hit another vehicle from behind, anddual airbags didn't deploy. She will contact dealer.

Dt:there was a recall for the clock spring/ air bag.the consumer took vehicle to the dealership and replaced it.the repair work was done on 8-22-05.they told consumerthat if the air bag light stayed on indicating there is a problem. The repair work took longer than the recall notice stated that it would.after they did the recall repairs there was a problem with the air bag light fuse blowing.they replaced the fuse and it blew again.they found that there was a problem with the module.the consumer has not had the module replaced.when the consumer contacted the manufacturer, they told him that the module problem was not part of the recall, andthey would give him some kind of discount for the problem with the module.the consumer stated the air bag was not working.consumer feltthat the problem with the module did not come about until he had the recall work done.

Consumer received recall 04v480000 concerning air bag clock spring failure from the manufacturer.however, 1 year ago vehicle was in an accident. Vehicle was totaled.also, upon impact, air bags did not deploy.

Air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the recall was not for this vehicle. *tc

The consumers child does not fit properly into the integrated child safety seat which say it holds children 22 lbs. And over, the straps are very loose even at the tightest position.nlm

Problems with vehicle's alternator, battery, brakes and electrical system.*mrthe consumer feels that the electrical problem caused them the replace the battery three times and the alternator twice in four years.the serpentine belt broke and left the driver stranded in rush hour traffic.the brakes failed which resulted in an accidents.multiple brake components had been replaced prior to this accident.the consumer believes the vehicle is unsafe and request reimbursement.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated the vehicle was parked and off when it caught on fire. The fire was extinguished and the fire department confirmed that the fire originated from the fuse box. The vehicle was destroyed.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 100,000.

I purchased my vehicle 2 weeks ago when i was driving down the freeway, it felt like i hit something but nothing was in the road. I assumed i had a blowout. When i pulled to the side of the road the hood was smoking, and the tires were fine. I then proceeded to open the hood to find a fire. The fire department came to put out the fire and suggested that it was an electrical malfunction. I am currently in the process of having the vehicle evaluated to find out if this is true.

Repeatedly the entire instrument panel goes dead-no speedometer, odometer, or other gauges visible, also the gearshift indicator lights go dead.have replaced entire computer at high expense, then had recurrence of problem. Have taken van to dodge dealer but were unable to isolate problem.on dodge forum this is a recurrent defect in these cars-see link http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/dodge-caravan/t4ajes74f3ac3voab.

Fuel gage don't work after fuel pump replacement,,,,gasoline spilled all over road

Hi i own a 2000 dodge grand caravan.have been having problems for about a yr. Tried contacting dodge they said they couldn't help me or give me any suggestions. They said because the van has a lot of miles. I went online to research the problem. Apparently a lot of people are having the same issues as me.i did have my mechanic chk it out. He could not resolve the issue after 1wk. It started with a dead battery, the gauges on the dashboard sometimes not working, the ac is blowing hot air or not working at all and the drivers side window not going down.now none of the gauges work including my gas gauges, speedometer, air, window, car temp and the lights stay on when i turn the car on. I am a single mom i cannot pay ridiculous amounts of money for them to figure it out. There are a lot of people on the internet that have the same issues but have not addressed the issue with dodge. Someone needs to do something about this issue. This is very dangerous i have run out of gas on the highway and on a road where gas is not off the exit. I am a mother of two and that's not safe. Please see if you could help me. Thank you

The serpentine belt on 96-2000 chrysler minivans slipping off is a known issue and has been for years. Time and time again chrysler has refused to issue a recall for it. It is due to a manufacturing defect in one of the engine mounts causing a pulley misalignment. The belt slipping off causes loss of power steering, water pump, and alternator. The power steering loss can cause a driver to not be able to correct in time and cause an accident. The loss of the water pump can cause overheating resulting in engine damage. The loss of the alternator can cause the car to eventually stop running when the battery is drained, causing motorists to be stranded. I live in alaska and i'm not always in cellular signal when driving and temperatures in the winter get down to -30 f at times. I can't wait sometimes several hours for a tow truck to get to me without risking hypothermia at those temperatures. This needs to be made into a recall so it can get fixed.

2000 pontiac grand am safety recall regarding clockspring replacement.*mrthe clockspring recall was repaired the fuse for the blower motor, the back up lamps and turn signal blew out when the vehicle was put in reverse.

I have taken vehicle to the dealer 7 times to fix electrical issues.when headlights are on dash functions crash, locks don't work, wipers don't work, check engine light on. Dealer has replaced fuses, re-wired, replaced body control module. Dealer is unable to resolve problem. Now dealer advises that in order to fix the problem, it will require 3 electrical harnesses, costing $3000!

I recently purchased my van used, and have had the following problems with it..the automatic door looks work when they want to. I have had my childs care seat come unbuckled from the middle bench seat before. My brake lights come on when they want to and stay on, in the middle of the night you will get up and find the brake lights have come on for no reason. The lastest problem is when you open a door on the van, the open door light comes on and my low gas light comes on and makes its warning tone and my fuel gauge goes to empty. When you close the door and the warning lights go off and my fuel gauge returns to full.

The check engine light and abs light keep coming on and the lightkeep going off onthe dash board for i bought the vehicle while driving

Dt: the contact stated there have been numerous electrical problems which resultedin the dashboardpanel lights flashing on and off while driving.she took the vehicle to a dealer for multiple attempts to correct this problem.also, there was a leak within the roof, resulting in damage to the carpeting.there is a slashing sound within the roof compartment after a heavy rain. The carpet has been replaced five times, and the television was replaced once as a result of the leak..updated 11/30/2005 - glazed serpentine belt caused grinding noise when turning.the left middle seat head rest came loose from the guide rod. The door sticks and the siding door makes noise when opening.the rear window rattles when opened.the fog lihjt are ionpertive.the horn spunded weak because the keyless entry remote needed to be reprogrammed.the tail light had moisture in it.the locking gas cap was hard to open.the rear tire had a slow leak.

Dt*: the contact stated, the air bag warning light failed to illuminate during an emissions test performed on 7/21/06. The light worked until 6/23/2006, when the service dealer performed recall #04v480000. The service dealer informed the contact the warning light was not part of the recall.

2000 grand caravan.....initially, the instrumentation cluster would intermittently extinguish.hitting a bump, it would come back on.most recently, the van will not start.no instruments, no click, no nothing.if you whack the top of the dash with your fist, all instruments come on, and the van starts.i have not repaired it yet, but intend to pull the dash and check for bad solder connections.

Horn blowing while no one is in the van.

Lock cylinder engages column lock and will not disengage. Ongoing problem that has gotten increasing harder to get the column to release. Per dealer tsb on problem. Will have to have drilled out and replaced.

Regarding the ignition problem with the proper key being inserted and not turning..i had the same problem several times and was also stranded.i learned if you put the key in and tap the end of the key (as if you're trying to tap it further into the ignition) with a rubber handled screwdriver a couple times it will then turn and start right up.

Fuse for turn signals and abs light on dash keeps blowing, dealer replacedfuse 4 times in 3 weeks.. Consumer stated the dealer found the wire casing running under the vehicle hitting the transmission and over time it had worn through the coating.

Heating/airconditioning fan switch would not function in one position, traced problem to burned up and short out connector and resisitor connectorin engine compartment that operated heating/air conditioning fan speed. Replaced parts. Poor design, will not accept electrical load over extended operation. Old parts avalible.

There was a fire under the hood which caused 2 explosions.the first explosion appears to have been an electrical fire.the second explosion was in the gas or fuel line.the entire engine area was burned and the fire cracked the windshield and started moving into the front of the car.no one was hurt.the car was determined to be a total loss.no repairs were made.this is a claim to replace or repair the car.police and firemen were called to the fire.fire report was made.

Car was totally consumed in fire. No accident or involvement with any car or object.

Electrial short that render all dashboard gauges to cease functioning.n addition, electrical short did not allow transmission to properly shift gears.lectrical short caused additional damage to circuit board (so the dealer claims)

My wife was driving the vehicle when she smelled a burning odor.she looked behind her and saw flames coming out of the right rear side panel next to the third seat.she pulled over and called 911.the police and fire dept. Came and put out the fire.the fire dept. Said it appeared to be caused by an electrical short.my insurance company, new jersey manufacturers insurance co.,declared the car a total loss and took it.

While driving vehicle shuts down completly if key is turned off vehicle will most times restart, several times vehicle would only start after waiting several hours this happens sporatically about once a week vehicle has less than 20,000 miles fuel filter replaced old filter unavailable starter relay replaced old relay is available

I just purchased my 2000 dodge grand caravan july 26,2003.in march of 2004, i got into my van, started it up, and when i went to back up i heard a ding and my abs light came on and then went off.from that point on, the abs light would come on and when it did, the controls in the dashboard would stop working.i would loose my odometer, tachometer, gas gauge, speedometer, and gear select.i took it to a dodge dealership, they had it for 3 days and said that they could not find the problem.i then took it to an automotive electrical service shop, they have had my van for 3 weeks and can not find the problem.they have supposedly called dodge and dodge is not helping them.they recommend us taking it back to a dodge dealership again.obviously there is a problem with the van and no one can find it and i can not drive the van safely without this problem being fixed.

The switch that controls the lighting on the instrument panel and the dome lights would intermittently make a buzzing noise, and causes the panel lights to flicker while driving at night during various speeds of 0-60 mph. Dealer was notified.

Vehicle was brought to dealership 6 times for the same reported electrical problem. When vehicle went over bumps, turned right, or owner turned on the heat.....the interior lights would flash, door locks would go up and down, and the emergency brake light and the door ajar lights on the dash wouldflash.each time we brought the vehicle to be checked we were told that electrical problems were hard to diagnose unless it was physically happening while being diagnosed!the dealership adjusted the doors and replaced the bcm motor under the dash however electrical problems continued and on 10/11/02 the vehicle caught fire in the dash by the steering column while i was driving it with my children in the vehicle!!! we got out without injury thank goodness but the vehicle was totally engulfed within 6 minutes!to dodge this was no loss to such a large company but to my husband and i...it could have been our 4 children! mr

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan sport, the serpentine belt has fallen off 4 times since i have had the vehicle. The first time it came off i was going 35 mph in a residential area, a friend helped my dad put the belt back on, then a few days later it came off again going 55/60 mph, took it to a local mechanic and had the water pump, serpentine belt and tensioner pulley replaced. About one to two week(s) later the belt falls off again during excelleration to get onto an express way, this time took it back in and they replaced the tensioner itself. I thought the problem was fixed, but it happened again on august 12, 2014, it was raining and i was only going 25 mph as i turned onto my street, luckily i was able to pull into the drive way before my van started to overheat.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving 5 mph in the rain, the belt on the engine of the vehicle disengaged. The contact stated that the failure recurred every time it rained or when the vehicle was driven through water. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,000.

I was driving at 75 mph on an interstate highway. The 3.3 liter v6 engine, with 120,800 miles on it, threw a rod and cracked a 3 to 4" diameter hole in the block. I have cared for this car religiously for 14 years. It had full oil level. It is available for the next couple of weeks for examination if desired. I was able to get off the highway onto the shoulder safely.

I have a dodge ricon activan wheelchair van. It is a 2000 model. I purchased it with only 29000 miles. After driving the van for 60 miles it will start stalling, looses power and die. This has happened to me 3 times. The first time it happened i had my son with me (he has spastic quad cerebral palsy) we broke down next to a dodge dealership. Getting my son home was a nightmare. The dodge dealership worked on the van. Yet,the problem is still there.after 60 miles it stalls and dies. On saturday i was broken down with my childon the interstate.it was92 degrees out side, how horrific. I can see if the van had 100,000 milesto have issues. I was fortunate to get the van pulled to the side of the road, if not we would have been hit and killed.this is a issue that needs recalled. This is a safety issue.

The serpentine belt on my 2000 dodge grand caravan comes off everytime that it rains. I lose power steering which makes it nearly impossible to drive and the temp gauge jumps all the way up.

When driving (usually accelerating) the engine will stop running causing difficult breaking and steering.this has happened on multiple occasions and getting worse!!!!!the steering wheel must be tilted up before it will restart.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and hitting a pot hole, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was later towed to an independent mechanic. After diagnosis, they advised her that the serpentine belt had failed. The vehicle was repaired. Approximately two months later, the failure recurred. The contact received whiplash due to the stalling. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000. The current mileage was approximately 73,000.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence, where a certified mechanic detected that the serpentine belt dislodged and was reconnected securely. The failure occurred at various speeds. The serpentine belt was replaced seven times by an independent mechanic and the problem continued to occur. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted and the revolutions per minute decreased. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but they were unable to duplicate the failure. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 180,000.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that the serpentine belt constantly failed. The vehicle was personally repaired several times by the contact. The manufacturer was notified who stated there was no recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 281,000.

Whenever it rains, and water is sprayed under the vehicle, the serpentine belt is knocked off. Vehicle looses power steering and engine temperature gets very hot.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 mph in wet weather she suddenly loss power steering, and heat malfunctioned. The mechanic was contacted, diagnosed the failure at the scene and advised her that the serpentine belt came off and needed to be replaced. The serpentine belt was repaired. The manufacturer wasnot notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000.

Significant risk ? complete loss of control due to poor design (unresolved manufacturer known issue):during a moderate rain storm, the serpentine belt once again slipped off the pulleys, which disabled power steering, causing a complete loss of control of the vehicle as it was accelerating from a stop (my wife was unable to fight the weight of the vehicle).luckily, the vehicle had just left a stoplight and had only attained about 20 - 25 mph.the vehicle was stopped before hitting anyone or anything in a very crowded pedestrian area of downtown san diego's historic gaslamp quarter.given the reduced visibility from the rain and nighttime city illumination, it?s amazing this did not result in pedestrian injuries or even deaths or damage to waiting taxis or parked cars.this is the second time this has happened to this vehicle in the rain, but the first in which total loss of control occurred.the first instance also occurred at night, in the rain, while waiting in heavy airport terminal traffic. Numerous reports of dodge grand caravan serpentine belts slipping off in the rain can be found online in dodge forums.a technical bulletin was issued for prior model years but does not include the 2000 model year.also of note, after the vehicle stopped it began to overheat as the water pump was also disabled by the loss of the serpentine belt.

The serpentine belt comes off whenever it rains. I have had the belt, harmonic balancer and the tensioner arm (2 x's) replaced but it still comes off in the rain. I have since found out that this is a very common problem with this car. This is dangerous. I lost control of the car momentarily each time and had near accidents. Luckily i was strong enough to steer the car off the road. But a small woman would probably not be able to. This should be a recall not something the owner should have to pay for.

My 2000 dodge grand caravan's serpentine belt comes off the pulleys every time i drive the vehicle in the rain. We have replaced the tensioner, tensioner pulley and the belt and still have the same problem. I have researched this problem online and found several other dodge owners with the same problem.there has been a after market kit made to resolve the problem with the pulley, but this is at the owners expense. I feel dodge needs to take full responsibility for this malfunction. I have filed a complaint with dodge regarding this matter. This is very dangerous, i loose power steering and electrical functions on the vehicle when this happens.

Consumer stated everytime it rained the oil sensor light came on and stayed on. Dealer stated they could not duplicate the problem.

My dodge 2000 grand caravan serpentine belt can come off the drive when the vehicle is driven into a deep puddle of water or through a snow bank. And when the belt comes off, i lost the control to the vehicle because the belt drives the power steering pump.it is the serious safety issue obviously. Please check the web site: http://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_30931.html to see how many complains. Many people reported this problem to you. But so far no action from you has been taken. Dodge also keep ignoring the complain.are you blind or deaf?

Serpentine belt keeps sliding off during slight moisture, whether raining, drizzling or splashing up water. Steering and brake failure multiple times. Had to use ford wheel that has a "lip" on it to keep belt from slipping any more.

We purchased new a 2000 dodge grand caravan.within 2 years while i was driving not knowing what was going on the steering on the car went out with no warning and i almost hit a tree.i found that it was the serpentine belt.from that point on i have almost had 2 additional accidents because the belt either was chewed up or came off.my husband felt the experience yesterday when the steering went out.this will be the 6th belt problem that we have had with this vehicle.i have contacted dodge but to no avail.what happens when the belt goes and you are traveling 60-70mph and you have no control of this car.is there anything that we can do?i have not complained because dodge says that there is nothing they can do.they have admitted ti me that there are problems with the serpentine belts.i didnot even know you existed otherwise you would have heard from me long ago and we may have saved a lot of money time and luckily no lives have been lost to this point.thank you.

I was driving my 2000 dodge grand caravan to run to the store. While driving people were jumping up and down waving. After seeing the third or fourth person i realized something must be wrong. I rolled down window and they were screaming your van is on fire. The fire department was called and fire investigator present stated i was extremely lucky one more push on the gas could of blown my van up. He stated engine malfunction was the cause of the fire.

Over the past 5 years, the serpentine belt continuously slips off on my vehicle.when replacing the belt, it was noticed that the tension pulley appeared to be bent.replaced tension pulley and ensure all pulleys lined up.new belt placed on, but when starting the vehicle, it immediately begins to slip off again.over the past 3 years alone, have replaced upwards of 5 serpentine belts and the tension pulley on my vehicle.

Driving on a rainy day.went through a puddle and immediately lost my power steering.managed to get van into nearby parking lot to find my serpentine belt hanging from underneath the engine.had vehicle towed and belt replaced.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that the engine serpentine belt failed. The serpentine belt detached each time a water puddle was driven over. The failure was experienced several times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that a shield be placed over the serpentine belt. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer installed the shield cover over the serpentine belt.the failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

My 2000 grand caravan (87000), has the dash board crack on the drivers side, from the windshield to the speaker grille,(and traveling). This is a common problem with chrysler vehicles due to news reports recently. Chrysler should address this problem before people get hurt ect.. I have replaced the evaporater, a/c compressor, & belt $2300.00. The transmission is shifting badly and today check engine light came on. This is my 7th chrysler vehicle in the past 30 years, and will be the last if chrysler doesn't step up, on this dash problem this time.

While traveling this past winter a snow plow ran me into a pile of snow in the middle of the road.immediately after this happened the serpentine belt slipped off.after having this problem fixed the serpentine belt then slipped off several more times before i found a part called a pulley bracket to put on because there is no cover on the serpentine belt to prevent this problem.

I have at 2000 dodge grand caravan.the serpentine belt has fallen off twice while i am driving in rain.this latest time, a vehicle coming in the opposite direction went through standing water, splashed my van and caused the belt to come off immediately.i lost power steering with cars behind me and turning a corner.my young son was with me in the van at the time.this is very, very dangerous.it is a known problem.my shop is very good, they know about the problem and try to do everything to help prevent it.shields are in place, but are no help.

While driving on a slushy city street the serpentine belt came off and i was unable to steer the car.i was stranded and blocking traffic.i had it towed and they put the belt back on.the second time it happened was during a severe thunderstorm when i drove through a puddle of water the serpentine belt again came off.this happened just as i was pulling on to the highway and i was barely able toturn the steering wheel to pull car over on to shoulder.thankfully, there wasn't a semi coming or it could have been deadly.i was just informed there is a fix by gates for this and will be having it installed.

For the 2nd time in less than a year, the serpentine belt came off the belt-tensioner in my 2000 grand caravan sport.this incident results in power steering, engine cooling, air conditioning and other systems to stop working immediately.both incidents happened while driving in the rain, it is an obvious design flaw with chrysler family of mini-vans.

Van stops for no apparent reason.just started in summer heat.transmission acted up, had it serviced---now transmission made huge noise, no reverse, loud whining, all going out.loud squeaks in supports, brakes replaced but still squealing even when pedal not pushed.horrible fogging problems, have had to pull over and wipe windows inside and out when raining.almost wrecked when vehicle stopped in traffic.can't see due to fogging when raining.just an accident waiting to happen---going to the junk yard.manufacturer needs to own up to problems.won't own another.

On february 8, 2004, herman lino, co owner of car, called me to report some trouble with the dodge caravan.the red light came on and the cruise control light also came on.he pulled over to the side and felt that the engine was warm.he opened the hood and saw some smoke which he thought may have been from an overheated engine.i told him, by phone, to add some coolant to the radiator.he purchased a container but the radiator only took 1/2 of the container.after a while, the red light and cruise light went off so he started the car to drive home which was about 2 miles away.as he ascended a slight incline, he saw smoke coming out of both sides of the hood, more from the driver's side. He immediately stopped the car, turned off the engine and stepped out to the front of the car.he opened the hood and something immediately burst into flame.the flame was about 5-10 ft high.herman said it looked like a house on fire.he stepped back when another explosion erupted.police and firemen converged on t he scene and after things cooled down, an inspection was made.a report from the fire dept was issued.the fire erupted about 8pm.the car was towed to ace towing about 5 miles away from the scenethe car had less than 15,000 miles, is in good shape and had regular service at the dodge dealer.the entire engine was burned and needs replacement.there's a large hole in the windshield when the fire entered the vehicle.top of the dashboard sustained melting and damage.front seats, upholstery incurred little damage.the ceiling of the van shows soot marks.this vehicle had it's original battery.there was only one driver .owners had no otc coverage.please tell me what i need to do to get some assistance to replace or repair the car.it is an ims vehicle.it appears that it is a company defect.i have the car here on my premises.mrs. Transmission lines leaked and were tightened under warranty. Transmission lines started leaking again but this time i had to pay because all of a sudden the line was fractured due to some external cause. Transmission stutters and shifts hard especially between 25 and 35 mph.started complaining to dealer around 30,000 miles, of course when i returned for the 3rdtime to complain at just over 37,000 miles they had no previous record in their computer so i had to pay to have it looked at. They still insist nothing is wrong and the problem is getting worse. The coolant reservoir is always almost empty no matter how much i pour in. Dealer insists this is normal and pressure tests indicate nothing is wrong.. If the system is sealed where is all of the coolant going?

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving approximately 50 mph with a full tank of fuel, the fuel gauge displayed as empty. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and depressed the reset button since the vehicle had just been fueled. The vehicle was restarted and operated normally, but the failure recurred approximately eight other times in a four month period. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the radiator needed replacement. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Serpentine belt slips off tensioner pulley in wet conditions.total power steering failure and vehicle is extremely difficult to control.

This is the third time in a year that the serpentine belt has shredded and/or fell off.i replaced the tensioner the second time. It looks as if the pulleys are not aligned with the tensioner so the belt eventually rides off the edge of the tensioner. All times it was not raining or snow like some of the other complaints i have researched on the web. Dodge grand caravan with 107,000 miles. 3.8l with a/c.

Serpentine belt had broken while driving. Dealer repairedvehicle. Please provide further information.

This has happened 2 times in the last year.hit a small puddle of water while making a right hand turn. Water sprayed up on the serpentine belt which threw the belt off of the idler pulley and tensioner pulley.both times we were making a right hand turn... Which made it very dangerous because we loss the power steering.the first time was with my wife driving...which would be very hard to control for a lady... The second time i was driving, which was better... But still very dangerous.i am planning on purchasing the goodyear replacement kit that has been mentioned on several websites and this website.daimlerchrysler should be recalling all these vans and replacing all the pulleys with these safer kits.

2000 dodge grand caravan - serpentine belt slips off in the rain causing steering and electrical system to quit functioning. This is very very dangerous and happened last time in a van full of kids.chrysler has "fixed" this problem over 7 times in the last 2 years. Today is the 8th time it is getting fixed yet again. Brazil recalled all their vans between 1996 and 2000 for this very problem - why isn't the car being recalled in the us?

The 3/8 inch fastener that connects the serpentine belt tensioner failed. It appears to be a clean shear near the base of the bolt. This happened as the vehicle was being backed into a garage and nearly stopped. As a result of this failure, the power steering was rendered non-functional. It is my firm belief that if this failure had occured while moving, a serious accident would have resulted. The failed component has been replaced ans saved for any future evaluation of the failure mechanism. When this problem was reported to the dealer, indications were that this has happened several times in the recent past.

I just found this web site. And never realized how many people have had the same problems. My first problem was when my 3 year old daughter drove my car on the neighbors lawn because you do not need to step on the brake to pull it out of gear. I then looked in the owner manual which stated it was equipped with that feature. I have contacted everyone i could and no one is willing to help or solve this problem.my next incident was when my serpentine belt broke which caused my power steering pump and pulley to break and had parts dangling. Thank goodness i was in my driveway.i have had my brakes done 3 times, and my latest problem was my heater core and there was water leaking inside my car.i wish someone could help i paid a lot of money for this car! *nlm

2000 dodge grand caravan sport with the 3.3l engine has lost its serpentine belt in rain.this results in immediate loss of power steering and leads to serious overheating.this is a known problem that has been experienced by many owners for many years.

Serpentine belt slipped off of idler pulley.belt wrapped around crankshaft pulley, which made the timing belt slip.power steering failed, causing my 18 year old son to find a place to pull over. Engine failed due to timing out of sequence.cost to repair: $460 for timing belt replacement. Belt failed a second time. Idler pulley was replaced for $260.

While driving 35 mph in the rain consumer noticed that check engine light came on.a few seconds latervehicle lost control, andconsumer nearly had an accident. Vehicle was towed to a dealer, who found that the serpentine belt had slippedout ofthe pulleys.

I have been informed that the serpentine belt on dodge caravans have a tendency to come off in heavy rain and/or snow. It happened on our vehicle the other day when my wife was driving. She lost the ability to steer the vehicle and narrowly missed getting into an accident.dodge is aware of this problem since they have issued a tech bulletin about it and have a kit that they feel will remedy the problem. However no re-call has been issued. I do not feel that i should be required to pay $150 to $200 to remedy this potentially dangerous defect.

Serpentine belt keeps slipping off the main drive.. Have had into the shop 4times for same problem. Dealer said it is a moisture/snow hitting the belt off.

Serpentine belt keeps falling off whenever the vehicle goes through a puddle, rendering the power steering useless, engine overheats, alternator stops.2000 dodge grand caravan 3.3l with ac, 132,000 mi, serpentine belt, tensioner, and water pump replaced; the belt slipped off once per week for three weeks, each time during a heavy rain 3/4/2008, 3/27/2008, 2/28/2008.

Consumer states that the serpentine belt have broken and replace for the third time while driving, the problem is reoccurring for the fourth time. Dealer notified.nlm

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.while driving 25 mph in the rain or through a puddle, the serpentine belt detaches.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they replaced the serpentine belt twice; however, they were unable to determine why the failure occurs only when it rains.the manufacturer advised the contact to call nhtsa.the current mileage was 90,625 and failure mileage was 85,000.updated 03/11/08.*lj

I filed a complaint on 28 aug 2007 regarding my vehicle and the serpentine belt issue.i had to have my vehicle towed and it is going to cost approx. 500.00 to repair the vehicle for the 7th time. I have found the answer to the problem that 30+ folks on this site alone are having.#1 the belt is smooth on one side and grooved on the other side so when oil, rain etc. Touches the belt, it slips off.what i found it that there is a drain hose that sits on the left side of the belt when the water from rain comes through the drain from the windshield into this hose, and drips right on top of the belt causing it to be faulty.the hose has to be directed into a different place . I also found that g. Auto makes a kit that comes with the belt, tensioner and all accessories to fix the problem permanantly.the difference is that the hose and the tensioner is grooved to provide no slippage.i have spoken to 2 auto dealers that have advised me that they have had numerous problems with this issue including a shop in tennessee that said that they have worked on 15 2000 dodge grand caravans in the last 2 months with an average of 4-8 belts being lost and having to be replaced for each van from 2000.there is nowhere to complain, so you would not be aware of the severity of this issue with out checking inventories.i have been told by dodge dealers that they know about the kits and the problem and i have contacted dodge corporation but as you and i know, a recall will cost them millions of dollars.what about the lives that may have or might be lost when you are driving and the steering goes out.this should be taken seriously.the issue is that folks bought these cars in good faith and they have paid hundreds and maybe thousand out of their own pockets that they should never have had to if this problem was taken care of in the beginning.the consumer provided emails corresponding with the manufacturer. 2000 dodge grand caravan serpentine belt keeps squealing, breaking, slipping off, and shredding.for over a year now we haveproblemswith this belt that have baffled the mechanics.fortunately, no one has been injured, but we have been stranded twice requiring a tow, and h had the van in the shop at least 6 times over thisproblemwhich is still unresolved.after a quick search, it seems to be a huge problem that many owners are experiencing.many 'fixes' are out there, but perhaps the best, most reliable is to have the mechanic install an 'after market' kit with special pulleys and belt for around $200.i will probably have this done as we can't keep rolling the dice with the family vehicle.

I have replaced the serpentine belt and pulley/tensioner assembly on my 2000 grand caravan 4 times in the last 3 years.the design is flawed and must be fixed by dodge.i have used both dodge replacement and napa replacement parts to no avail.i can not trust this vehicle for a long distance which is what i bought a van for.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.while driving at various speeds through any amount of water, the serpentine belt slips off.the vehicle loses power steering and brakes.the dealer stated that they were aware of the failure, but would not provide a free remedy since there was no recall.the contact filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 130,000 and current mileage was 160,000.

Serpentine belt has come off during highway speeds twice on this vehicle.appears the tensioner pulley design is not robust.second time the engine overheated destroying 2 cylinders and the head stranding my wife and 5 boys on the interstate.the resulting failure modes could have very serious consequences - recommend improvement to the design by recall.

I was driving down 422 away from 76.i was just about to turn off on to trooper road in norristown when i heard a clicking noise.i then turned the radio off and it was pretty loud.it got louder the more i pushed onto the gas pedal, and stopped when i took my foot off.it was slightly uphill for a few hundred feet and i knew if i just made it to the top and hoped for 2 green lights i may be safe.i started going up and made it to the second green light (thank god) but my engine just cut off and i lost power steering and breaks.i had to force my car to turn and almost didn't make the turn in time.i then had to coast 1/4 mile to get off the road to pull into a parking lot where my car sat until it was towed.this was all in the middle of a snow storm, where i was later plowed in and had to dig my way out of 3 feet of snow to get it towed.it went to the shop where i was told the timing chain broke.luckily nothing bad happened out of the whole thing, but it could have been much worse.

While driving at 45 mph serpentine broke.this is the fourth timesuch an occurance has happened with components related to this system.each repair averages 250-300 dollars.this poses a risk to us as as a family as the vehicle fails without warning, in a highway this could prove disastrous.

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan, 3.0 l engine. I have been experiencing the belt slipping off the tensioner during wet weather.the first time we hit a small (1 - 2" deep) puddle of water when turning a corner.we immediately lost power steering.i contacted my local, independent mechanic, who told me this is an on-going problem with 1996 - 2000 caravans.he even went so far as to print out a service bulletin detailing the problem.the second time it happened was less than two weeks later, hit a small puddle of water on a rainy day, lost power steering again.luckily, i was going slowly both times, but worry about a serious situation of going at highway speeds.i have contacted the dealership, who acknowledge that they have heard of such a problem, but there is no service announcement from dodge/chrysler, and no "fix" - only to replace belts and tensioners.i then researched through internet, found situation as stated by first (independent) mechanic listed on multiple websites by many owners.chrysler is avoiding acknowledging the problem, yet 2 aftermarket parts companies have developed parts to fix this issue.both gates and goodyear acknowledge a safety issue, so i believe chrysler/dodge should have to ensure the safety of their vehicles.these are mini-vans.sold primarily to families.so, the typical scenario is a mother with kids stranded in the rain.i now fear driving my van in the rain, and am petrified of driving highway speeds in the rain.

Year 2000 dodge grand caravan - serpentine belt tensioner failed resulting in shredded belt and towing. Van had only approximately 47,500 miles. Repaired at goodyear for approx. $200 (including new belt) who indicated this is a common problem such that the dodge dealer had more than 15 in stock.fortunately this occurred near a police station where my wife got assistance (since steering, etc. Had no power and not on the highway or rush hour traffic which would have been hazardous.i have also read other complaints from owners with this same issue.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.while driving approximately 25 mph, the serpentine belt detached without warning.the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic and the serpentine belt was replaced.months later, while driving through a small puddle of water, the serpentine belt failed again.in addition, the battery warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel and the power steering failed.the contact took the vehicle to a dealer and they repaired the motor mount for the serpentine belt and installed a disc to hold the belt in place.after the repair was made, the serpentine belt would continue to detach without warning.the failure usually occurred in rainy conditions.the manufacturer has been unable to correct the failure.the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 131,000.updated 02-19-08 updated 02/19/08

Serpentine belt has come off my 2000 dodge grand caravan 4 times. First time, i hit a pocket of water on a small highway in a construction area.drove vehicle to a safer location, left my wife and 3 kids on the side of the road at night while i walked a mile home in the rain to get my ford ranger to load all 5 of us in to get home safely.had it towed to a repair shop who replaced the belt tensioner and belt.second time, about a year later, my wife hit water which also knocked the belt off and stranded her and my 3 children 15 miles from home.brother in law was able to come and spent an hour of gut wrenching labor to put the belt back on.third time, a month later it came off again shredding the belt and leaving my wife stranded by herself after dropping my kids off for school. I had it towed to a reputable repair shop who said it needed another belt tensioner and assured me the napa product would perform better than the previous one.he tried to see if a kit was available for our large 6 cylinder engine but could not find one.fourth time, one month later as my wife was driving 2 of my children to school in the rain, the belt came off again but this time she didn't hit any water.had it towed back to the repair shop.they checked all componets connected to the serpentine belt and tried for 30 minutes to duplicate the problem by pouring water over the belt, etc. With no success.owner says he doesn't know what is causing this problem even though he is aware that this is a common problem for dodge vans.question:if this is such a wide spread problem as shown by all the complaints for the same problem on this website why has there not been a recall to correct whatever is causing this problem?answer:because it will cost dodge/ chrysler too much money.solution:unless you can only drive a dodge van on warm sunny days don't bother buying a dodge van.especially if you value your family's safety.

Year 2000 dodge grand caravan rejected in emissions testing with on-board computer.van computer cannot communicate with emissions testing computer.emissions center noted chrysler service bulletin 18-10-00 and suggested dealer service for "re-flashing" at owner expense.i had attempted to be proactive before testing upon hearing of other complaints on same issue by contacting chrysler and alexander dodge (dealer).chrysler initially denied knowledge of any emissions problems.after the dealer confirmed a problem and stated there is only a 50/50 chance the van will pass emissions and after i obtained the service bulletin #, only then did chrysler say there was an issue but they refused to tell me about it unless i provided them with a visa or mastercard number.i am amazed that chrysler is not standing by their product or customers.they want me to pay them so they can tell me about their problem with their vehicle and then they want me to pay them to fix their problem.if chrysler knows there is a problem, the dealer knows there is a problem, and customers cannot get emissions testing or renew vehicle tags, then what can be done about chrysler not assisting the consumer?

The crossover pipe has holes in it and needs replacing.i was told by my mechanic that fumes can get into the car and also that if it fails much more, the wires under the hood can be burned.all the dealer was willing to do was replace the pipe.the problem with that is since september 2004, the pipe is back ordered.

The cross over pipe/exhaust manifold failed upon turning the heat on. Some very heavy exhaust fumes filled the vehicle when driving. Consumer contacted the dealer, but problem recurred. Exhaust fills the vehicle when the heat or air is turned on usually when vehicle is at a stand still.*tc

Air conditioner has leaks in several locations that resulted in the failure of the compressor and dryer.it is unacceptable for a closed system like this to develop leaks .

I had the brakes on my vehicle repaired twice. The first time my car had approx 40,000 miles and i was told it was due to the way i drive the car.not more than 6 months later the brakes starting vibrating again and i took it back to burlington dodge - were they told me, once again, it was due to the way i drove the car and there was nothing they could except replace them again.my most recent problem was the air conditioning totally malfunctioned.i saw smoke come out of the dash and when i took the car in for repair they told me the entire system had completely failed and i had to put in a new a/c.

My infinity radio system started losing its time and when i shut the car off it shut the radio and the next thing i knew the radio/cd/cassette player was dead with a cd still in it. I brought it to my mechanic who said with this make/model and year van this was very common for the radio to die. He said they had numorous people complain and have to buy new radios. This is a 3 yr old van i should not have to be replacing the radio in it. Of course i cannot even get a comparable system without spending at least $350.00 i think if this is happening to dodge grand caravans a lot then there should be a recall and the manufacturer should replace the system.

Consumer has wind turbulant noise inside of vehicle when windows are up.turbulance is so high where passengers have to talk loud, and radio has to have a high volume to hear. Vehicle is in arbitration.consumer states the noise is also heard in the rear, dealer states they will try to remedy the problem by adjusting the luggage bars on luggage rack.

Should a vehicle owner continue to keep their older vehicles the headlamps on many vehicles have plastic faces that become etched over time making it impossible to drive the vehicle at night without putting on the high beams. Hence night driving has become hazardous for these vehicles and to others. The kits to clean them do not work. The entire headlamp on the vehicles need to be replaced to correct this problem and that costs hundreds of dollars. It is not so simple as to just replace a plastic cover. The vehicle manufacturers should replace them free of charge. Plastic doesn't remain clear and visible specifically in the northeast where salt and sand are applied to the roads for winter driving. Highway driving is havecon plastic also. Are the stats up for night driving accidents???

I recently purchased my van used, and have had the following problems with it..the automatic door looks work when they want to. I have had my childs care seat come unbuckled from the middle bench seat before. The lastest problem is when you open a door on the van, the open door light comes on and my low gas light comes on and makes its warning tone and my fuel gauge goes to empty. When you close the door and the warning lights go off and my fuel gauge returns to full.

After filling my 2000 dodge grand caravan with gasoline last night, i heard something give way under the car as i was driving home. I discovered the bracket holding the gas tank up had come apart. By the next morning, the gasoline tank had collapsed onto the road. When the tow truck came to haul it to the repair shop, the fuel pump pulled away from the tank and dumped the load of gasoline onto the road - a very dangerous situation.

My gas tank dropped on the ground because both brackets holding the gas tank to the vehicle had rusted through. This could have been a very bad incident if i had been traveling faster on a road with heavy traffic.

My 2000 dodge grand caravan mini van has a 3.3l engine.early in march 2005, i had a difficult time starting the vehicle and the smell of fuel was prominent.upon a search of fulel injection problems on the internet, i found nhtsa recall notice 00v268000.this notice describes the following problem for minivans with the 3.3l and 3.8l enginges:these vehicleshave fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. Fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.i suspect that, although my vehicle is not in the recall, my problem is the same as the problem that affected the recalled vehicles.

I have repeatedly taken the van in for repairs for fuel mileage and pinging under acceleration as well as rattling in the steering column, intermitant wipers will stop working intermitantly.the most resent problem is the vents on the drivers side of the dash board cannot be shut off while the heater is on, this causes my head to get very warm while my feet are cold.the wiper switch, body computer and motor have been changed at 4 seperate trips to the dealer and this has not repaired the problem.all of these complaints have caused the van to be out of service for 14 days at the dealer, none of the problems have been resolved.

Sounds funny, but the problem is, mice get into our van.and we're not the only one!!when we took the car in, the dealer told us they have had other complaints, our cashier even told us her van has the same problem.our kids are always getting sick and there is mouse droppings all over the care all the time.none of our other cars have this problem. All the windows /doors are closed, but there is always fresh mice droppings in the car (we live near a field, so yes field mice are nearby)it's gotten really bad as of late, and i'm affaid our kids are going catch something.again, the dealer has said others have complained, but they can't figure out where the mice are getting in.please help, as we feel this is unsafe (yes in a different way, then most of your complaints).

Fuel tank has a rubber vent ring on the top of the tank around the line which feeds fuel out of the tank.the vent dry rotted and deteriorated.the van was parked on our slanted driveway and gas began pouring out of the tank onto the driveway.the dealership and corporate headquarters have been contacted.they are firm with their position that the warranty has expired and the van was not repaired at one of their service centers, therefore they will not help with the costs of the repairs. ($737.00)the service manager at the dealership did admit this problem has never been seen before.he stated he has been asked to complete an engineering report for dodge corporate headquarters.should this car have been involved in an accident with this defective part, gas would have easily leaked from the tank causing an extreme safety hazard. Dodge seems to be turning a blind eye to this problem and refusing to admit they sold me a car with a defective fuel tank.a response regarding this matter would be appreciated.dt

Fuel gage don't work after fuel pump replacement,,,,gasoline spilled all over road

Dodge caravans door sensors- i have a 2000 dodge grand caravan, i purchased the vehicle used about 3 years ago.during the first winter the "door open" light would flash and ding and the doors would unlock and relock, over time it has become worse especially during colder seasons.i have looked into this matter and have read complaints that this has happened to people that just purchased their cars brand new and many more complaints all over the internet.i don't understand why this is not a recall and being taken care of, i have read where people have been locked out of there cars because it would happen when they stepped out of the car and left it running.i have 2 toddlers and the thought of that scares me, for example if i turn on the car to warm up and put the kids in the car and go to put groceries in the back, and the car locks up.besides the threat of getting locked out, it is absolutely annoying to be driving down the street and to have the door alarm constantly going off and the doors locking and unlocking.i have looked into getting this fixed and i was told it could be around $600 to get the sensors replaced.....that is just ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2000 dodge grand caravan has on three occasions locked itself after i closed the driver door.the locksmith who came out and the rep i talked to from chrysler both said this is common with this model. If this is a common problem, there should be a recall.

Transmission failure occurred at 58,822 miles on the 2000 dodge grand caravan i own.the problem with my transmission was that the splines of the front planetary stripped because they were made with a softer metal than the underdrive clutch hub.i feel this is a design flaw that daimler chrysler should address.when i contacted daimler chrysler, i was told the problem was my fault, because i had not changed the transmission fluid at the recommended service interval, and i was 22,000 miles outside of warranty. However, there is not a transmission fluid i am aware of that will make those splines stronger. Ts

*nlm

While driving on a major interstate the transmission in my 2000 dodge grand caravan locked up with only 87403 miles registered.after having it towed to a reputable transmission company i found that the entire transmission was damagedfor no apparent reason and had to be replaced.while repairs were being made i investigated to see if there was a recall for this vehicle for transmission problems and found that many individuals have had problems with this particular vehicle but there have been no recalls to this date. All parts including gears were replaced at my expense of $2221.58.it is my understanding that the transmissions in this vehicle should not have problems and especially should not have to be replaced until at least over 100,000 miles.

The automatic transmission shudders between 45-52 (most pronounced around 48) and did so when i drove the car off the lot new on 1/14/00. When i took the car to the dealer for service i was first told it was tire balance and that they fixed it. It didn't and i brought it back. The service man said it sounded like the torque converter. It was computer tested ok and their mechanic added some liquid to the transmission. I've driven it to fl and back to tn and the problem still exists.the other complaint/defect concerns rusted front end components. Upper and lower control arms left & right, torsion bar and other parts in that area are very rusty. I notice it when i changed oil. I went to another dealer and looked under those vans and found those parts also rusty also on new vans. It seems there is no coating or anodizing on these parts and they are rusting very rapidly. I also noticed rust on the main crank pulley of this new car.

In january 2003 i experienced a problem getting my van to shift into drive after i had backed out of my driveway.on february 17, 2003 my husband was driving the van and experienced problems getting it to shift gears while he was driving it.he added transmission fluid and later that evening i drove the van to a store two miles from our house and at 35 mph the rpms would not go below 3 and the check engine light came on.i called the dealership first thing tuesday morning and took it the shop on thursday.they repaired a leak in the transmission (which we had had repaired previously) and replaced the water pump.two days later while out running errands the check engine light came on again.i had to exit the freeway because the engine would not shift gears again and at 50 mph (in a 60 mph zone) the engine was at 4 rpms.before i could get home the engine quit in the middle of a highway intersection with traffic coming at me from behind at 55 mph.i was able to get it startedbut it lurched for about a quarter mile or so and i just drove no more than 30 mph for the next 5 miles to my home.my husband took it back to the dealership on monday and was told that the solenoid (sorry if i misspelled it) needed to be replaced.he was told to take the van home and they would call when the part came in.on monday, march 3, he called and spoke with the parts department and they informed him that there are 24,000 of this part on backorder nationwide.*nlm

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 50mph, a loud noise was heard coming from the engine compartment.the vehicle was driven to its destination and when the contact attempted to drive the vehicle again, it would not go into gear.the vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was determined the differential cross pin came loose, logged into the side of the transmission case and resulted in a complete loss of transmission fluid.the entire transmission needs to be replaced.

Transmission failure at 42,000 miles. Problems with transmission shudder, tsb 18-05-94. I had brought the transmission shudder to the dealers attention starting at around 32,000 miles. Dealer said they could not find anything wrong. They re-flashed the computer, etc. Van was brought back to dealer twice before 36,000 mile warranty expired. Brought the van back at 37,000 miles to complain again and dealer proceeded to tell us that they have no records of any prior complaint regarding the transmission, therefore they would have to charge us to re-flash the transmission. (i will never lose or throw away any warranty related receipts again). After going back and forth and getting nowhere we paid the re-flash fee and once again the they told us there was nothing wrong. Then at about 42,000 miles the transmission blew. This after the dealer told us on a minimum of 4 occasions the transmission was fine. After some "polite" negotiation i got the dealer to cover half of the $1300.00 repair cost to replace the transmission pump. Of course they didn't cover the flatbed & rental car expenses. I have never owned a car that i have had to repair or replace a transmission and i had driven most of them well over 100,000 miles. I do not understand how chrysler can get away with this. With all of the disgruntled chrysler customers on the internet i can't beleive the nhtsa isn't investigating their transmissions. Who is paying off who?

The transmission has been repaired twice. The first incident was at 32,716 miles. The symptoms at this time was a transmission slippage when at idle (and a grinding noise) and a hesitation to go into reverse. The transmission was rebuilt at the dealership (seals replace). After driving approximately 200 miles continuously the transmission suddenly failed with no prior warning while driving 65 mph. We were barely able to pull off the highway in heavy traffic. The transmission has been replaced with a new one. How can a vehicle go through 2 transmissions in 33,000 miles? i had my family (including 2 children under age 2) in the car during this. We went from 65 mph in heavy traffic in the middle lane to 20 mph in less than a 30 seconds with the rpm's redlined. We were lucky not to have been in an accident.

I am a day care provider and while i was transporting five small children, my 2000 dodge caravan's transmission blew on the interstate with no warning.i was horrified and we were left stranded for nearly an hour.i recently had the transmission fluid changed, and oil changed prior to this incident.my vehicle had approximately 80 thousand miles on it.i keep up with maintenance. After having it towed to the dealership and finding out it was going to cost over $2000 to fix, i made several phone calls.i was told by several local service shops that this problem is common and that on an average they see this happen on a weekly basis.online research turned up thousands of individuals across the country who have also had this happen. The transmission blows, something about a pin flying through the case and the vehicle is rendered useless until a $2000 plus repair is made. Contacted chrysler directly and they stated they are unaware of any problems, yet the internet is filled with people who have experienced this dangerous situation. When i inquired about whether this will occur with a new transmission, i was informed the problem would be corrected, if there is a problem to correct ...then chrysler should fix it to begin with. I now have to replace my transmission and i strongly feel that chrysler should have to pay for at least part of it since it is a defective part in their transmissions. This problem only occurs in the 97-2002 models from the information i gathered online. The transmission fails and there is no maintenance or procedure that a customer can do to prevent it.

Hi,my name is [xxx], i live in bradley, il. In june of 2000, my husband and i purchased a 2000 dodge grand caravan from, taylor dodge in kankakee, il. On october 20, 2000 with only 4500 miles on it the van began slipping into neutral while driving.this van has been in over and over to that shop. I have been without my van on a regular basis, with out resolution. The owner of the dealership, [xxx], was in the van - in his shop and the van dropped into neutral when he put it into drive. (not moving).after many visits of we cannot duplicate the problem, the chrysler corp was contacted by dodge.a return fax to the prior service manager [xxx], told them not to do anything until the problem isduplicated.i have talked to [xxx] asking him to replace this van, of course he cannot do that. I have emailed dodge corp asking them to fix or replace as this is a safety issue. A couple of weeks ago they replaced the transmission, within 2 weeks the van was doing this again. I called and was told they would get back with me. I had to call them back. The resolution this time was bring it in will take it for a drive. Which of course i did, of course in a 10 minute drive it did notdo this. The bottom line is, i cannot manipulate the van to do this and when you are driving 45 miles pr hour and the van drops into neutral it is a safety issue. We have had many close calls with this van in being rear end. I have put large size lemons in my windows and pained on the van, 3 years and dodge cannot find problem,i have only 35,000.00 miles and have had problems since 4500, i purchased the extended warranty about 15 months ago due to these issues. Today dodge tells me that until a certified service person, experiences the problem first hand, nothing will be done. I asked [xxx] (service manager, does that mean someone has to die in this van before it is fixed, he stated they have made an honest effort to try and fix the van -that is all they can do.) *lainformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (

Shortly after buying this van with in a year the van was making a grinding noise, took it back on march 2002 , thay said it was repaired.on a highway in jan. 01 2003,the car was on route 1 and it suddenly went from drive to neutral,doing50 miles an hour in the fast lane,i had togo to the breakdown lane just missing several cars before i reliezed the engine was racing.this happened to my wife,of course i thought she was crazy, but it happened again wen my son was driving, this after being brought in for transmission work at ira dodge in medford which cost me 615.97 march 19 2003,problem was still happining and i went to melrose dodge and all he did was ajusted shifter linkage for 85.00 dollers. No problem sincethank god. There is a problem with these vans.

Vechile will shift into reverse or drive without brakes applied. Any child could shift whileengine is running and could cause fatal accident.*la

The vehicle lurched forward when it was put into gear, the dealership indicated it was caused by the transmission cylinder pack, however the part was on national back order.

(1)driving along at normal highway speed when with no warning vehicle shifted into "limp" mode. Check engine light came on and would not shift out of 2nd gear. Vehicle has been maintained exactly as called for in service manual. (2)towed to repair shop and was informed that transmission needed to be replaced. Cost would be $2000 to $2500. Informed that the real problem was that there was a backlog on ordering a rebuilt transmission. Wait could be as long as 6 months. If this is not a serious problem, then why is there such a backlog in obtaining a replacement? also at the time of purchase i was aware of the problems chrysler had in the past with caravan transmissions so i asked the salesman about the problem. Was informed that chrysler had fixed the problem. Later found out that they didn't fix the problem as there are still as many problems as before they just reduced the warranty period so they wouldn't have to repair as many under warranty.(3)everything is still available as i can not afford to pay for repairs because i still have to make my payments.

2000 dodge grand caravan: i shifted the vehicle into reverse and it started to reverse but then jerked, placed in park, and again attempted to reverse but experienced the same results. Placed in neutral and rolled out of driveway into street and noticed transmission fluid had blown, pulled forward and parked. Towed to dealership and they are telling me that the transmission housing cracked and that the repair/replacement cost will be $3500.

Luckily we were slowing to a stop at the time of this incident. The center pin that holds the gears in the differential came loose and locked the front wheels up so violently that it killed the engine. If this happened at highway speed this could have been deadly. There was no warning no noise at all.when this happened it busted three holes in the differential case of the transmission and one hole in the flywheel housing. I believe there are som serious engineering issues that chrysler needs to address before someone is seriously injured or killed. Luckily all i am out is the mony tobuy another transmission and pay the core charge since my case is not rebuildable.

After 22800 miles (feb 7, 2002), the transmission solenoid pack failed (slight leaking), causing a check engine light to come on and forcing bad shifting.the dealer replaced this under warranty.at 49,500 miles (september 8, 2003), the check engine light came on again and the van was shifting rough again.since the main warranty had been exceeded at 36k miles and the part from the first dealer repair was warranted for 1 year/12000 miles, the dealer offered no recourse.found a good (non-dealer) mechanic to replace it for less (still cost $525...dealer wanted over $600).dealer claimed that this was unusual to happen once, let alone twice, but still wouldn't help me.*la

I picked up on a matter of safety with my 2000 dodge grand caravan se, when the vehicle is turned on, and running the vehicle can be shifted from park to other gears without the break pedal being depressed. This issues continues to happen. I spoke with the dealer about the issue, and was told that in the 2000 model it wasn't required to press the brake pedal to shift the vehicle. I as the consumer do not think this the case. I can make it happen time after time, and can show you it happening. Could result in property damage, and or crash.

Transmission failure - when placed into drive the gears failed to engage (especially when cold).this van is 2+years old with ~62,000 miles.fixed at smith brothers in old saybrook, ct and required new part due to the failure of the clutch hub imput which broke down sending metal parts throughout the transmission. (very expensive for a car this new!). I caught this problem early enough to avoid the potential disaster of a high speed failure.in addition, this vehicle does not appear to be able to maintain it's front end alignment.since purchase the front end has been aligned twice.on 12/20/00 the front 2 tires had to be replaced ant the front end aligned (national tire, niantic ct). This past summer (i don't have the exact date handy) the front end had to be realigned again and i was told that the driver side was way out (auto service of old saybrook, 4 jade court, old saybrook, ct). This issue has caused excessive tire wear but danger was minimized due to regular inspection.

Vehicle can be shifted into gear without depressing brake pedal. Manufacturer has been contacted. Please provide further information.

Transmission fluid leaking from transmission pan seal at 24000 miles.

My car just died in the middle nowhere on route 42 on the way to work.only to find out that the transmission needs to be replaced.the caravan i own has only 42,000 miles on it.i do not even own it for 2 years.it was a buy back from the dealer.the warranty was only for 3 years of 36,000 miles.i was told by the mechanic from the dealer i purchased the vehicle from that this should not have happened.now i am forced to pay over $1100 for a new transmission.i was told that they have agreed to split the bill of approximately $2200.i feel i should not have to pay anything as this should never have happened and is a defect from thechrysler manufacturer.i am not the only one complaining.there is a whole web site dedicated to complaints by consumers which i have down loaded and is over 11 pages long.

Pinion pin of the automatic transmission came out and destroyed the transmission.a standard pin retaining clip would have precluded the problem.

When the vehicle was in second gear, it became stuck.the dealer informed consumer, the transmission needed to be replaced.

While driving 50-55 mphtransmission exploded. Broken pieces of the transmission spread out onto the roadway.vehicle was towed to a repair shop, andmechanic stated that the cause of this problem was undetermined. The dealer was not notified.... Let chrysler know of the problem. When transmission was taken out it looked like a bunch of holes shot into it. The mechanic said the pin came out of the differential. Consumer was lucky to get off the road.

Transmission failure @ 105,000 miles

My 2000 grand caravan (87000), has the dash board crack on the drivers side, from the windshield to the speaker grille,(and traveling). This is a common problem with chrysler vehicles due to news reports recently. Chrysler should address this problem before people get hurt ect.. I have replaced the evaporater, a/c compressor, & belt $2300.00. The transmission is shifting badly and today check engine light came on. This is my 7th chrysler vehicle in the past 30 years, and will be the last if chrysler doesn't step up, on this dash problem this time.

The transmission on this van suddenly went out while i was driving over railroad tracks.fortunately, i was able to get the van off the tracks before the train came by.the van was towed to the dealership who accused me of not properly maintaining the transmission.my husband takes care of the maintenance on this vehicle and followed the manufacturer's instructions.there was never any indication that there was a problem with the transmission prior to it's failure.the transmission shop has stated that the cooler on the transmission causes a backflow of fliud in the lines forcing the torque converter to drop metal shreds into the transmission.their opinion is that the failure was caused by a chrysler design flaw.just from the little bit of research we have done on car point, it is very common for the transmissions in these vans to fail before they reach 50,000 miles.i was lucky that mine lasted until 60,000.i have had several problems with this minivan, including a dashboard melting over the airbag and a belt needing to be replaced 2x already and quite possibly a third now.chrysler refuses to stans behind these vans because they are out of the mileage warranty and it's not right.there is an obvious and chronic problem with these minivan transmissions that needs to be fixed.another mother may not be so lucky and get her van off the railroad tracks when the transmission.dt fails.thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.i look forward to hearing from you.

At 41,000 miles suffered total transmission failure w/ no warning. Veh would buck when shifted into reverse, as well as forward gears. Brought to dealership and was told it was a failed differential, needed total replacement and was not covered under warranty. (this van is 10 days/ 5000 miles beyond the warranty period). We had a previous problem of trans fluid leakage which was repaired approx a year ago, and we have followed the reccomended service schedule. This time around the repair totaled $1900.

The transaxle in the transmission blew apart in the gear case at 76,000 miles on our 2000 caravan and nine days after this the left front axle assemble was shot and had to be replaced.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Intermittently and without prior warning transmission locks up while driving due to a weak pin withintransmission. Dealer is repairingtransmission. Please provide any further details.

The gears on the vehicle can be shifted without applying the brakes. Owners manual states that gears should not be able to be shifted without application of brakes. Dlr has no recourse.

I have owned a 2000 grand caravan for 6 months and it has 40 thousand miles on it and i am already having transmission problems. This is the 4th time i have had to take it to be looked at about the transmission, now the dealership says it needs a totally new transmission this van is not that old and does not have that many miles on it. I am starting to think i made a bad choice trading my ford in for a dodge van.

Van drops into nuetral when driving, dealer can't find anything, dodge won't do anything. Been in shop repeatedly. Not repaired gointto kill someone nearly rearended.

When driving at 5-10 mph transmission is jerking, vehicle is at dealership at this time. Please provide additional information.

The vehicle can be shifted into reverse of drive from park without applying the brake. *nlm

Automatic transaxle:within the first 5, 000 miles i complained to the dealer about a "jump" in the tranmission.i was advised by the salesperson and service department that is was normal.after driving other 2000 grand caravans, i noticed it to be the same.within the following 10, 000 miles the jump still existed and progressively got worse.i again returned to the dealer and again was advised it was normal.after a total of 36, 000 miles, the transmission died.i now have to pay out of pocket for reapirs and want other consumers to know that the transmission sensors and powertrain control modules (pcm) are faulty and could cause injuries if not checked or replaced.a "jumpy" transmission could cause a vehicle to accel or decel out of control. My neighbor's 2000 grand caravan transmission sensorpowertrain control module (pcm) went out after 15, 000 miles and had to get it replaced.it was not under warranty.he had to pay for the repair out of pocket.

2 friends have had same problem with transmission leaking fluid.

Transmission fluid leaks.first it appeared that it was leaking from the transmission oil pan, 3 weeks later the transmission hoses and clamps, two weeks later, its leaking from the transmission coolant packs.the vehicle is only two and a half yrs old, this should not be happening.between each visit it stopped leaking for a couple of weeks.

Power train:transmission cooler lines leaking.

Transmission oil was leaking from where the solenoid pack had to be replaced, also, engine oil gasket pan had to be replaced.

Vehicle can be put into gear without the brake pedal being depressed . Consumer's child was able to put the vehicle in gear, almost causing an accident while parked in driveway.

I started my 2000 dodge grand caravan and turned on the air conditioner.i opened the doors to let the heat out and my 2 1/2 year old son reached into the front seat and pulled the shifter into drive.the van shifter shifted without pushing the brake and the van ran into my chain-link fence.this is a saety issue and i do not think it was recalled.if it does not get recalled then i will trade in my vehicle for a more safe one.

While driving 40 mph transmission malfunctioned. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop, whereconsumer was told that transmission needed to be replaced.

There is a noise in steering wheel, vehiclevibrates when changing fromdrive to reverse gear. Contacted dealer. Electrical system problem

Vehicle was parked, motor running, consumer bumped gear shift and vehicle went into reverse. Brake were not applied.

Consumer stated that while driving transmission failed causing vehicle to stall.dealer diagnosed and replaced transmission "line", "converter" and "solenoid".ph

The owners manual states the vehicles has a feature called brake/transmission interlock that prevents you from putting the vehicle in gear while running unless the brake is depressed.my vehicle does not have this feature.chrysler called it a "clerical error" and said my manual is wrong.my van was ordered and mfg in oct 99.it was not the first 2000 model made.i feel any vehicle with front airbags should have this safety feature.i am scared that my 3 year old will start the van, put it into gear(quite easily done), and drive it into the garage wall.this would activate the airbags and could be fatal since he would be unrestrained.ford and gm have this safety feature.why did chrysler say they have it in their manual and then say it was a clerical error?

My 4-year son put the right key in the ignition of my dodge grand caravan, started the van, then put it in gear and rolled it down the drive way until it crashed into a tree. Luckily he was ok, but don't you think its time that dodge gets with the program and makes their vehicle so that you have to press on the brake before you can get it out of gear.why is this not a national standard. Especially in family vehicles.thank you gregg cahalan 616-850-4533. Please respond!!!

While vehicle was parked could shift gear without stepping onbrake pedal. Had contacted dealer for this situation becausebelieved it was a safty problem.consumer took vehicle to dealer and was told that shifter operation is operating to design intent.

You can move the shift lever from park to drive with out any contact with the brake.normallyin other vehicles, you must depress the brake before you can move the shift lever out of park.this is dangerous as a child could take hold of the shift lever and move it into gear causing a possible accident/injury.i contacted the dealer about the problem.their response was not to worry about it, they all do that!

My 2 year old son turned the key and put the car in gear.when it started moving, he fell out and the car came to rest against his hip.my other two children were in the car, and had it not stopped on his leg, it would have rolled into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer truck.

Shift lever can be moved without applying the brakes into any gear.consumer received a letter from chrysler stating that there was no transmission interlock as stated in their owners manual. Chrysler included labels, indictating the defect, and will not modify vehicle.

Perhaps this doesn't qualify as a "failure"as my gr.caravan is not equipped with a shift interlock. However, i feel strongly that manufactureres of minivans ought to be required to equip such vehicles with shifft interlocks as all passenger cars are. Wh.

Shift gears can be easily moved into gear from the park position without applying the brakes.please provide further information.

Consumer's child pulled back on gear shift and was able to put it in gear with the emergency brake on.consumer has called to find out that it was not a safety feature. Consumer will contact manufacturer.consumer's child was only 21 months old and was able to put the vehicle in motion.the vehicle hit a stop sign, drifted through an intersection, and was headed directly towards a telephone pole.*jg

Anyone can move the shift lever from park to reverse without touching the brake.this is very dangerous.no one has to be in the driver seat, a child can be in between the driver and passenger seats, take hold of the shift lever and pull it down into gear.we contacted southland dodge and they said they all do this.this is not right.all other vehicles you have to depress the brake before you can shift out of park.this report was sent to you once before on 6/3/01 with no response.

6 year old child was able to slip the gear shift in drive whilevehicle was on. Vehicle rolled backwards, almost running over another sibling, and went through a fence. No injuries or fatalitesmanufacturer was notified, and stated it was not a saftey feature forvehicle.however, it was added to2002 vehicle to avertgear shift from going into another gear while vehicle was in motion.

Vehicle went into reverse whengear shifter was brushed lightly by a child because there was no shift interlock system. Dealer has been notified.consumer was injured while attempting to stop vehicle, she was hit with the door on left side and twisted her ankle.

There is no brake shift interlock on the 2000 dodge grand caravans.the omission of this important safety device causes the vehicle to be able to easily shift into any gear, without having to first press the brake.this is a major safety concern with small children especially, and even for adults who may bump the gear shifter.i know that 12 states are currently involved in a class action lawsuit against daimlerchrysler regarding this safety issue.i have contacted 2 dodge dealerships, as well as the daimlerchrysler corporation in michigan regarding this.no one will fix the problem, nor will they escalate the issue for me.one dealership said they think it will eventually become a national recall.no one should have to wait until that point in time comes (if it ever does).their have already been at least two fatalities reported because this shift interlock was not installed on the dodge caravan vehicle.when and or what will it take to have action on this issue?!?

While driving the consumer heard a grinding noise and pulled over.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the left front axle had broken.the van has been modified by "braun entervan" for disabled access.*nlm

My grand caravan was hit from behind with such force the rear of the van lifted off the ground.at impact my drivers seat broke, reclining me, making it impossible for me to reach the brakes to stop my van.i hit the center median (fast lane) with the left front fender, blowing the tire and breakingaxlethe van then bounced across lanes hitting bridge railing and cement wall with right front fender blowing that tire and then back to the median (fast lane), and came to a stop against the median.i was told by the insurance investagatormy caravan was beyond repair due to the amount of damage.

Saturday morning i ran a couple of errands around town and at 12:30 p.m. Began to back out of a parking spot and heard a loud noise. I proceeded out of the parking structure and only made it as far as the street before coming to a complete stop. I called for a tow. The tow truck driver said that my wheel on the front driver's side did not appear to be completely attached to the axle. He towed it to the dealer. The service department on monday informed me that my cv joint/axle had broken. A broken axle on a 2000 that has 18,222 miles on it. How does this happen under normal driving conditions? my kids and i werelucky that i was not going fast or driving down a freeway.now i see on the news this morning that there is a recall for dakota trucks and durangos, but not caravans.what's up with that?

The vehicle began to make a loud noise, consumer pulled over and noticed transmission fluid all over the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, after the vehicle was inspected, it was determined the pins which were located inside of the differentral was bent and had shot out of the casing.

While driving, suddenly there was a loud clanging noise from the transmission then the van stopped accelerating.the van was towed to a dealership. The dealership indicated that the differential pin broke in half and went through the transmission and created a hole . The cause of the differential pin breaking had not been determined.

The differential pin popped out, which caused a noise when the vehicle coasted.the dealer stated that if the vehicle continues to be driven, the pin would penetrate the transmission, then spill fluid and breakdown.scc

My 2000 dodge grand caravan sport all wheel drive developed a thumping noise in the front drive train.i took it to county chrysler, hamburg, pa - a 5 star chrysler dealership.the service dept. There told me that it was the result of a worn out power transfer unit.the cost to replace it including the diagnostic and repair labor will approach $3,000.since the van is only 3 years old and has only 67 thousand miles on it, it seems like the power transfer unit must be either cheap or defective.with only this much mileage to have to replace major power train components makes me think that there must be a problem with either the design or the parts quality.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician stated that the seat belt buckle was functioning as designed however, the dealer offered to replaced the seat belt buckle at the contact's expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that he was displeased with the placement of the seat belt release buckle. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. I own a 2000 dodge grand caravan and i want the gen 3 seat belts recalled.i always make sure everyone buckles up before i even put the van in drive, but what good will that do if the seat belt comes undone? *nlm

I own a 2000 dodge grand caravan and i want the gen 3 seat belts recalled.i have 2 child restraints installed on the same row next to each other and worry that in an accident the seats may possibly unbuckle each other due to the gen 3 belts.my seats are installed with zero movement at the belt path, but as well all know seat belts do stretch in an accident and who is to say that they won't hit the buckle release mechanism?

I have seen on tv and read on the unsafebelts.com website about the defect in the gen3 seat belts contained in many chrysler, dodge, jeep vehicles.i am registering a formal complaint to ask that all gen3 seat belts be replaced for free by the manufacturer with the gen4 seat belts.

I have grave concerns about the gen-3 seatbelt latches on my vehicle.

Van has gen 3 seat belts which disengage too easily.

Rear-most seat has a lever below it which allows you to adjust the front to back position to 3 different stops, when the seat is slid foward to the front-most stop, the outboard seat belts for that seat do not reach around the passengers on the left and right sides, middle belt is fine, consumer believes the original belts are incorrect, consumer was advised to call dealer and ask for seat belt extenders and after numerous calls and examining vehicle twice, consumer received belts.

2000 dodge grand caravan - the front driver side seat belt will periodically and spontaneously un-latched.it just comes un-latched on its own - without moving it or touching it.very dangerous!!!!if i get in an auto accident, and the seat belt becomes un-latched, not only will i probably get killed, but it will look like i wasn't wearing my seat belt.please have chrysler recall the models prone to this!!!

The safety belt used to strap in my 1yr old daughter's car seat has came unbuckled a number of times when my 7 yr old is buckling her own belt and barely bumps the release button with her hand or elbow.

Rear seat belt buckles can become undone very easily. Manufacturer was notified, and was assisting in solving problem.

Red release button ondriver's side seat belt can easily become unlatched.consumer was made aware ofproblem after watching a prime time special on television.manufacturer was contacted. Please provide more information.

The passenger front seat belt comes unlatched at various times and speeds. The vehicle was taken to jenkins chrysler south, lavale md on 8/24/2001 where the problem was observed and parts were ordered. I was then told there would be a $100.00 deductible charge as the vehicle was now under the extended warranty. When i questioned this charge and said that i didn't feel there shoud be a charge because it was a safety item, i was told that chrysler would not cover the out of warranty repair and i would have to pay. When i asked for the service manager and told them i was going to file a complaint with the ntsa only then did they say they would take care of it. I am filing this complaint to make you aware of the problem and the dealers response.

Consumer stated that when buckling the child into the integrated child restraint it would not latch properly causing the child not to be restrained properly. Dealer notified. Ts

Consumer was stopped, and then was rearended.power driver seat broke on impact, and reclined all the way. Damage to vehicle so far was $ 10000.00, still at dealer.one person was injured in the accident.

Front driver and passenger seat lever snapped off.seats can not be lowered or raised as far as reclining or sitting upright.the driver seat broke 6 months ago and now the passenger lever broke this week.the bar that the lever is connected to snapped in exactly the same location on each seat.

While the vehicle was in motion, my 8 year old son was sitting in a child booster seat in one of the 2nd row removeable captain's chairs.he lifted his left foot which caught on the seat release mechanism. This accidentally disengaged the mechanism that locks the chair to the floor. The chair's lock released and the chair wasno longer secured to the floor.we had to stop the vehicle and relatch the seat. The latch is difficult to engage but very easy to disengage.there is nothing that protects the mechanism from accidental release. Mr

While driving @ 35 mph i tried to apply my brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I was able to get the car stopped and off the roadway. When i looked under my van i had lost all brake fluid. I was towed to a repair shop and informed the brake lines burst. This van has been in the family since 2003. Every year the brake lines must be replaced. This should not be. Thanks to my expertise i was able to prevent an accident today. Was i lucky???

When driving (usually accelerating) the engine will stop running causing difficult breaking and steering.this has happened on multiple occasions and getting worse!!!!!the steering wheel must be tilted up before it will restart.

Rear brake lines have rusted and failed. They have rusted and failed in the area just behind the abs module where the braided lines are connected to the rigid lines. The rest of the brake lines are in fine shape.the only areas where they are bad is where the braided sections connect to the rigid sections.

Mileage at time of incident: 123860 miles.while driving this loaner vehicle of a friend. I encountered a sudden and unexpected hydraulic brake failure while stopping. Loss of brake fluid. Mechanical braking was available. Assessment of system showed no leaks on or around booster, master cylinder or abs distribution module. Approximately 50mm of severe corrosion of the two, rigid steel brake tubing sections, originating from the second junctions of the flexible hoses to the respective rigid steel brake tubing, that run along the driver side frame. When the braking system was used to stop, the sudden increase of hydraulic pressure caused a structural failure of the degraded tubing. This failure caused the catastrophic loss of hydraulic brakefluid and loss of the hydraulic braking system. This failure resulted in a near collision with another vehicle. Photographs were taken of the brake line tubing and junction and show the severity of the corrosion.this complaint is consistent with other similar complaints for this model and vehicle and model year as posted on the nhtsa.gov website.

My 7 year-old son was killed on 12/21/02 because my 2000 dodge grand caravan went into gear with out stepping on the break. The van rolled down a driveway and my son had his head out the window and he hit a tree and was killed. Granted i am partially at fault for leaving children unattended for less than 2 minutes but the van should have never been able to go out of gear with out stepping on the break. This is not a family safe vehicle. I know for a fact i am not the only person that has ran inside because they forgot something and the children were left in the vehicle. I just want dodge to be made to put the safety device on their vehicles so no other children are not hurt or killed. The 2003 dodge neon are also the same way. Insert the key only and the car will shift thru all the gearsthanksjill

The abs indicator light on the dashboard instrument control panel intermittently comes on. During the time of the light being on we experience a grinding/rubbing when applying the brakes.sometimes the brakes will rub and grind and then the abs light will come on. We have had the r/f wheel speed sensor and wiring replaced twice, we've also had the master cylinder replaced also.there are also associated problems that fail to get fixed or they get fixed and then reoccur like. The speakers in the front buzz loudly the lights inside the car when it is dark outside sometimes dim and flicker. Just recently the ignition switch went defective for no apparent reasonwe've have had this vehicle in the shop over 6 times and it is getting old.i am concern about my vehicles safety now more than ever because it transports my wife, son and my soon to be born child.i don't want to be called in the middle of the night to find out my family was in a accident or maybe worse. I just want my vehicle fixed right especially the amount of money they charged me for this vehicle or a vehicle that is safer than my current.i don't mind paying a lot for safety but when i pay alot and don't know whether i have it or not it angers to no end.dt

1st incident: john elway dodge service on 12/27/2000 for final inspection from the sale. Asked to check rattle in the frontright dash and the brakes, which acted soft. No paperwork was given. 2nd time occurred 11/13/2001: the brake problems reported to john elway dodge service, unable to get in before 2+ weeks. Brought to christopher's dodge world, inc. 16655 w. After having the car for a few months my wife started complaining about the brakes. I thought it was her. Eventually she brought the vehicle to the dealer to be checked. They replaced master cylinder 7/31/01. On august 29 2001 she brought it to them again for brake problem. They bled and adjusted the system. On 2/10/02 my wife comes into the door and says she can't drive the car. There is a loud grinding noise. It was towed to the nearest dealer. When trying to apply brakes brake pedal will go to the floor, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified.

The entire braking system is insufficient for a vehicle of this weight. These mini vans simply will not stop unless braking components are new and cool. After nominal low speed city driving, the braking system suffers severe fading. I seriously doubt if the system, when warm, has enough muscle to lock the tires if the antilock system were to be temporarily disabled or disconnected. Nhtsa engineers: test these brakes warm with the antilock defeated. They are not strong enough to lock the tires! the manufacturer has "hidden" and anemic braking system with the antilock.

Traveling 25 mph-brakes made loud chatter... Pedal stiff, stopped 2 car lengths past stop sign.dealer can not duplicate, so says "nothing is wrong."

Since april 2000 i have experience probs with front and rear brakes. It began clicking in the rear, i was told by dlr that rotors needed to be replaced. I paid for the replacements. 2 weeks later clicking began again, louder that time. Dlr kept veh sd they couldn't locate prob. So they cleaned brakes and turned rotors. Clicking then began in front of vehicle, only when stopping, and excessive grinding sound began and the veh would wobble when attempting to stop. Dlr adv that it was due to heat???? so the rotors were maintenanced again. Clicking started again about a month later and continues when stopping as well as a sound of fluid "swishing" and grinding at halt. I am very concerned that the dealership is unable to locate the problem. They keep returning an unsafe vehicle, i am returning to service tomorrow and hopefully will be successful in obtaining full repairs. Chrysler was contacted and basically has been no help. What is the next step if problem continues?

Replaced 4 tires at 108,520 miles. Repaced front rotors and pads at 108,537 miles. My brother has a 1998 dodge pickup and just replaced the brakes at 48,000 miles. Can you help us?(tiresize: p215/65r15)

While braking at various speeds there was a crack inside the front master brake cylinder. When brakes were depressedbrake pedal would go to the floor, causing extended stopping distance.

Power steering failed, then brakes. Serpentine belt wet from rain caused power steering & brakes to fail resulting in vehicle flipping on its side on i-75.service dept said thatthe power steering, etc was designed to shut down when belt got wet. This was anormal rain. Vehicle was not in high water.vehicle was ultimately totaled.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph in rainy weather, the power steering failed and the temperature warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that he had a difficult time steering the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 100,000.

I bought a 2000 grand caravan used from carmax with 64,000 miles.i have had 3 incidences where the power steering belt comes off in the rain and i am unable to steer the car.my mechanic has said that he has seen this defect with 1999 and 2000 models.i have 2 young children and this is an extremely dangerous situation!you need to recall immediately. I am extremely scared every time it rains and afraid that i will have an accident or worse. Please help immediately!

When driving (usually accelerating) the engine will stop running causing difficult breaking and steering.this has happened on multiple occasions and getting worse!!!!!the steering wheel must be tilted up before it will restart.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving 35 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. In addition, the battery and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The contact was able to park the vehicle in a nearby parking lot. When the ignition was started, the temperature gauge increased. The contact turned off the ignition and allowed the vehicle to cool down for awhile. Afterwards, the vehicle was restarted and the contact continued driving 15 mph to his residence. The contact noticed that the steering wheel belt was loose. The contact called lithia chrysler jeep of reno (located at 1050 e plumb ln #100, reno, nv 89502, (775) 501-8593) and informed them of the failure. The contact scheduled an appointment with an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 147,000.

The serpentine belt on my 2000 dodge grand caravan comes off everytime that it rains. I lose power steering which makes it nearly impossible to drive and the temp gauge jumps all the way up.

Steering belt comes off every time it rains.we have replaced belt, tensioner two times, and had it put back on car at least 10 - 12 times.why isn't this a recall as there are many people reporting the same circumstances.

Drivers-side front strut cap rusted. The rust is at the top of the strut cap housing and has not broken through yet. I went on-line to research this issue and see that there are many owners of the same 2000 caravan with the very same issue. Some with extreme rust. If this fails during driving, there is a extreme high chance of an accident. I am surprised that there is no recall on this issue.i am not a structural engineer but by all accounts, this is a safety issue that should be a recall issue. Does it take one or more accidents before this becomes a recall issue?

Strut towers rotted out at 90000 miles, replacement caps were purchased from dodge dealer and installed as per factory tsb .... Strut towers are rotted below repair caps again.... Approx. 150000 miles now on van, struts are also in need of replacement however this can not be done due to severity of rust damage....this is obviously a factory defect... Resulting in an unsafe condition... Chrysler is well aware of this issue and should be held responsible ... This is a serious safety issue affecting tens of thousands of vehicles...not just a few here or there - the question should be how many are not affected??? i'm actually considering searching for a lawyer to start a class action lawsuit against chrysler ...something needs to be done!

Driving on a rainy day.went through a puddle and immediately lost my power steering.managed to get van into nearby parking lot to find my serpentine belt hanging from underneath the engine.had vehicle towed and belt replaced.

Left strut tower completely rusted out. Major safety problem that chrysler knows about and should b recalled.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving the vehicle on several occasions, the serpentine belt detached from the drive pulley. The contact stated that an independent mechanic was able to place the serpentine belt back on the drive pulley. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure recurred several times only while it was raining. The contact also stated that the clock spring in the steering wheel failed, which caused the horn to fail and the front driver's air bag to become inoperable. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v480000 (air bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 186,425.

While driving on highway about 30 mph and making a left turnvehicle lost steering. Vehicle end up onshoulder of road. Then, consumer drove vehicle home with a low power steering.

There is a popping noise in the steering column, vehicle has been to dealer three times for this problem.nlm

Vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle and driver's side seatback collapsed. Consumer stated thatseatback should not have collapsed so that driver could have neck support.please provide any further information.

We were on vacation to the mountains and had just happened to stop at a visitors center.we heard a loud popping noise. The car would move forward and backwards but the power steering was not working leaving us unable to steer the car.had we been on the highway going 65 mph or in the mountains on switch backs when it broke this could have proved fatal.the dodge dealer said the tensioner had broken and they had to replace the whole piece.*nlm**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*753523

Engine failed due to timing out of sequence.cost to repair: $460 for timing belt replacement. Belt failed a second time. Idler pulley was replaced for $260.

The power steering continues to fail without warning. The consumer states the power steering hoses have been replaced twice, however problem still exist. Please provide additional information.

Vehicle would start to pull to left when consumer was driving. Contacted dealer, and dealer had replaced brakes and tires, thinking that was the problem, but the problem still existed. .a bad tie rod failure caused the vehicle pull to the left.

The knuckle to the tie rod broke in two at the left arm, causing accident, claim 22-v549-467.

I am sure that this is a safety problem but i am unsure if anything will be done.in the minivan there is no need to step on brakes while changing from drive to park or reverse etc. It could even be done while moving!i do feel that this could be ahazard as well as a liability.please email me with your suggestions.

At 50 mph on a curve steering gear locked and would not allow driver to follow curve so vehicle crossed yellow line ,as driver applied brakes, and luckily the oncoming traffic was able to merge left. Braking allowed the steering to return and slowly and carefully continue to our home. 2nd problem consisted of clunking sound when making left turns in new gearbox so it was replaced @ 15,537 miles.

I own a 2000 dodge grand caravan that i purchased new in 2000, i recently had new struts installed on the front and was told that the left front strut tower was severely rusted and should be fixed as soon as possible. I was also told that this was a serious safety issue that chrysler was aware of,i did some research and found that this is a common problem with 1996 to 2000 chrysler mini-vans due to a design defect.

While changing the front struts of my 2000 dodge grand caravan, i found the front left strut tower to be extremely rusted.it hasn't rusted through yet, but looks like it will only be a matter of weeks.i called my local dodge dealer and they said a recall had not been issued, but a tsb had been.this means i have to pay for it, even they know it's a problem.bad customer service on chrysler's part.i will not buy another product from them, as they don't stand behind their products.

Dodge caravan has corrosion in front strut tower.this is a unibody frame.was told by a chrysler employee that this is a common problem and rarely does chrysler assist with repairs. On oct 14, 2002 chrysler issued a tsb report #23-044-02, stating issue with left and right strut towers and the correction of the condition.chrysler is aware of this potentially dangerous issue and chooses to ignore it.after phoning chrysler they will not assist me in the repair of the vehicle.i was told by chrysler customer service that until something happens or breaks they will not correct problem.if the strut tower completely breaks as it will, it will render the vehicle inoperable and poses a significant danger to persons.

Disfunctional front end height causing front bumper to grab when parking at parking bumpers, which tore loose the bumper/fender. Also makes it so that it bottoms out at normal driving conditions.

Five days in dealer's body shop and one day in service shop, unable to stop the water leak into front driver-side cabin.the water leaks into vehicle when it rains.vehicle is always parked when water comes into cabin.it comes in with heavy or light rains.body shop manager remembers two other vehicles with water leakproblems.

The problem described herein is about my 2000 dodge grand caravan. Over the past year i noticed some rusting at the left top strut tower. I questioned it at the time, but was told it was not serious. During the past week i was replacing the air filter and noticed that now over one half of the strut area was heavily rusted and had large cracks on one side. I took it to my local chrysler dealer to see if the rust through warranty would apply, or if it was a common problem. The manager looked at it,looked up my warranty and said even though the time period is good until 12/2006the mileage of 69700 was over by 9750 miles. He would not admit that this is a common problem and said it could be very dangerous, take it to a body shop for repair. I since have investigated this complaint on nhtsa, and found that there are many identical problems, and chrysler has even developed a corrosion kit for this problem. See odi id: 10147504 can you advice me of my next step.we are not driving the van until it is repaired. This is a garaged vehicle.

Corrosion of strut towers, this has been ongoing since the van was new. We it is cosmetic and is not covered by the warranty. For the warranty to cover it, it will need to fail within 5 years or 100,000 miles. Well we are past that now and it has failed. What to do? the dealer can fix it but it costs me $1200 to $1400. For an ongoing problem this is not fair and reasonable. Not to mention, more than half of the complaints on this site are of this exact issue. And it runs through many years. Do we need to wait until someone is injured before this is corrected. Dodge is aware they have even made up a kit to assist with this issue. Is there a class action? this van was $33,000. New in 2000 when we purchased it. This is not fair or reasonable. Who needs to be talked toget this fixed? is the scope so large that they can not all be fixed?do i need to junk the van because the repair is more than it's street value?

2000 grand caravan has multiple rustpoints.the most dangerous of which is the rusting and deterioration of the front left strut.the top portion of the strut cover is rusted and falling apart, with a crack in it.other parts of the car that are showing many rust areas include:passenger door (can put finger through rust), hood (bubbling paint and cracking), paint peeling from antenna housing, rear hatch rust, left rear wheel basin.my largest concern is the strut rust for safety issues, but this vehicle should not be rusting so poorly being only 5 years old!

Corrosion of both front strut towers on late 1990's - early 2000 dodge caravans.dodge is aware of the problem as they address it in a tsb.the refer to it as a cosmetic problem when it is clearly a safety issue.if not repaired at high cost to many thousands of vehicles, control would be lost without warning.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.the contact noticed rust on the top of the strut tower.the rust has worsened over time.the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure.the dealer advised the contact to take the vehicle to a body shop so they could weld a piece of metal to the strut tower.the body shop stated that would not solve the failure and stated that the strut tower should be replaced.the current mileage is 73,500 and failure mileage was 40,000.updated 02/01/08.*lj

Water leaks onto the passenger side floor from the hvac during ac use and in heavy rain.

Dodge grand caravan 2000 - front passenger door area leak continues despite having had it "repaired" at the dealer twice. Most noticeable is that the leak occurs when the van sits in the drive with the windows rolled up. No evidence of where the water comes from, just the puddle at the passenger front door sill.

The drivers side strut tower starting showing signs of rust.installed the strut tower repair kit.now, the drivers side strut tower is completely rusted through.

Took my van in to the shop because i was hearing a noise in the front end when i drive it.they told me that the front strut housing cover had rusted and that the strut could now go through the hood and windshield while driving. That this is not the first time that they have seen this and that a kit has been made to repair it.however it has to be welded to the frame of the van and it could cost up to $500.00 just to fix this problem and i can not even fix the strut until this is taken care of.making other parts needing to be fixed because of it.i noticed some time ago that this was rusting but thought nothing of it not being a mechanic and all.i didn't think that this was an important part since it was under the hood i couldn't figure out why it would rust.i was told that it was a defect that dodge has known about and that is why they came up with the repair kit. That unless someone dies dodge is not going to do anything about it.i sure hope that nothing happens to anyone before dodge decides to do something.i can not believe that there are already complains on this site and the nhtsa has not done anything about it.i did call the consumer center at dodge and opened a complaint there someone should call me tomorrow.i just hope that they are willing to fix this at no cost or no injury to me, my family or anyone else that could be effected do to this problem.i hope if anyone else has this problem they report it also that is the only way we can get anyone to resolve this issue.i sure do not want to get rid of my van nor can i afford to right now.my van has been great and very dependable until this problem.i sure hope dodge or nhtsa stands by me and fixes this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a 2000 dodge grand caravan new in november of 2000. It now has 244,000 miles and still runs very good. I take care of it and do most needed repairs myself. I noticed a few years ago, some rust forming at the top of the strut towers never knowing of the service bulletin issued by chrysler/dodge on october 14, 2002 - bulletin # 23-044-02. I would have paid more attention to this issue if i would have known about the bulletin at the time it was issued. Last friday june 20th, i was pulling into the parking lot at my office and the strut tower actually snapped in half, not at the top where the rust was! i've never seen this happen on any vehicle before. Thank goodness i was only traveling about 10 mph when it happened. The bottom line is that i should have been made aware of this very serious safety issue 12 years ago and this should have been a recall, not a service bulletin.

Rusting strut towers 2000 grand caravan.i noticed rust on the strut tower about a year ago.i sprayed undercoating on the top of both towers to prevent further rust. I inspected the tops of the towers this week.both the driver's side and the passenger side tower continue to rust in spite of several layers on undercoating applied over the last year.as i was servicing the brakes i determined it was time to replace the struts on the front of the van. Knowing the towers are rusted on the top side i inspected the underside of the strut towers this afternoon.a crack has appeared on the underside of the strut tower on the passenger's side. I will inspect the driver's side tomorrow.after doing an internet search i have found the rusting strut towers to be a very common problem in both the us and canada.the problem exists across several years and models of dodge and chrysler vehicles.if a strut ruptures a compromised tower at highway speed, lives can and will be lost. With the number of dodge and chrysler vehicles on the road, the potential for catastrophic failure is multiplied exponentially. I am surprised there has not been a recall on this issue.someone must be asleep at the wheel.

My 2000 dodge caravan van has a rusted shock tower on driver side due to faulty design.this issues has been reported on many dodge blog sites.

Dashboard lights go out constantly. Also, door locks don't work intermittently. Took vehicle to dealer 5 times, cannot remedy problem. Dashlights lights went out 18 times within 10 days.

Electric locks/ doors would lock and unlock on their own.also, that if consumer applied brakes suddenlylocks would be triggered sometimes.this happens on a random basis.please provide any additional information/attachments.

There has been a leak into passenger compartment from top of hatch opening. Leak was hidden by plastic covering and not detected until noticeable smell, possible caused by mold. Water is entering through a faulty weld on each side of the upper hatch opening. Leak was additionally obscured because carpet is rubber backed. The underlying padding was soaked from the rear up to the middle row of seats. This has obviously been ongoing for a considerable time, but was undetectable due to it's location. The van is 3 1/2 years old but has only 31,300 miles. The welds should not fail in this short time. This is either a design flaw or a mfg defect. Many people may have this problem and not know about it. I have photos of the area where the water is entering. There is no specific date of incident, but i first noticed a small amount of wetness sometime last year. I thought it had dripped off the open hatch. I would like to know if this is an ongoing problem with these vehicles.

The drivers side shock tower has completely rusted out.i had a 1996 caravan that did the same thing.there are many repair caps that will help structural support if the rust has not spread too far.unfortunately, this will not help me.the rust was hidden under the paint and extends 4-5 inches down the strut tower.with the vehicle under weight and from driving it, there is now a tear in the metal on the side if the strut tower from front to back at a downward angle.this makes the vehicle undriveable and a major safety issue.

1. Normal vehicle operation2. The failure of structure securing and retaining the front suspension (strut tower) do to excessive corrosion.upon failure the entire front suspension falls apart resulting in catastrophic lose of vehicle control and support.vehicle will swerve resulting in collision or roll over.3. What needs to be done is a recall to replace the defective strut tower.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that the shock support and the framing near the front of the vehicle was rusted to the point of corrosion. The contact mentioned that the springs were faulty and deteriorated near the shock support and the framing. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the support system on the driver side failed and the support brackets needed to be replaced in the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v480000 (air bags); however, the contact was not notified of the safety recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

Upper strut towers on our 2000 dodge grand caravan are rusting out structurally with only 96,000 miles. It looks important to get fixed (which i will) before the front end collapses!

A rattling noise when car in use, especially when power used from air conditioning and defroster.diagnosis from dodge dealer was a cracked flex plate.transmission will have to be removed to replace part.2 weeks prior to bringing the car in for repair the front end began to shake upon acceleration (especially up hill), felt very unsafe driving.brought back to dealer they diagnosed the shaking problem to be the flex plate.dealer replaced the flex plate at my cost, because it is no longer under warranty.very expensive work because transmission had to be lifted.after repair the mechanic took it for a testdrive.remarked the rattling noise is gone, but front end shake remained.re-examined car and said the frame was bent on the left side and that the car must have been hit and to call a body shop for repair. The car has never been in an accident.there are absolutely no visible signs of any damage to the exterior.the van is garaged and at most driven approx 75-100 miles p/wk.i drive safely with children in the car and have not hit even so much as a curb or jack rabbit.how can the frame of acarbe damaged in such a way, without any misuse or accident.it is not a safe vehicle to drive and is susceptible to losing control at any time and causing an accident.

I had an oil change done at a chrysler dealer the service advisor noted on the repair order and told my wife that the front strut towers were rusting out and that the strut could break though the tower causing a loss of control of the van.

I purchased a used 2000 dodge grand caravan in 2005.at time of purchase the left front strut tower had no visible signs of decay.as time went on, the strut tower has began to rust completely through while the right tower is perfectly fine.i have found this is a common problem with dodge caravans of this model year and if the tower fails, the strut can punch through causing catastrophic loss of control. I have a family of 5 and i am very concerned for their well-being.there is nothing wrong this vehicle other than the described issue i have mentioned here.for me personally, this a huge lawsuit in the making, especially if any member of my family is endangered.i am the second owner of this vehicle.regardless, if something happens to any member of my family due to this known defect which i just found out about, i can guarantee you with 100% percent certainty that i will fight this in court. I would like to be contacted regarding this issue as soon as possible.i am very concerned over this, and my decision to take legal action and whether or not i ever purchase another dodge product again hinges on any assistance that i may or may not receive.i will provide vin # and any other information needed once i am contacted.

Strut tower on this van is almost completely rusted.to continue driving it presents a serious road hazard for i and my family!

The strut towers are so badly rusted that i am afraid to hit a bump. The driver's side strut tower is corroded and flaking. There are gaps where i can see through to the underside. This is a safety issue and my vehicle will not pass inspection until i shell out $400 for someone to weld a cap on (just one side).this is a known problem, yet the company has not issued a recall or anything.

Strut towers on my 2000 dodge grand caravan have rusted through. Visible, significant rust has been present for at least 7 years, however, it is now not driveable. I did not realize this is such a broadscale, significant problem to most owners of 1996-2000 vans. Please recall this mess! strut towers are not cosmetic!

Disfunctional front end height causing front bumper to grab when parking at parking bumpers, which tore loose the bumper/fender. Also makes it so that it bottoms out at normal driving conditions.

The left strut tower was found by an authorized dealer to need repair in order to pass the state inspection. It appears that this is a common problem among owners of this type vehicle and certainly a safety concern.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated that while having the vehicle repaired, it was found that the strut towers needed to be replaced. The strut towers were unable to be repaired due to excessive rust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 206,000.

A loud noise was heard coming from the front of the vehicle while turning.consumer noticed on more than one occasionthat the noisewouldescalate louder and louder.consumer took vehicleto the dealer for inspection, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem.

The drivers side strut tower starting showing signs of rust.installed the strut tower repair kit.now, the drivers side strut tower is completely rusted through.

Driver side strut mount dangerously rusted and could give way.

First noticed bumping noise under front end when i was making a right turn and going over a dip or bump in the road.eventually, the noise happened turning left or right or going over any bumps or dips in the road (ex. Railroad tracks, speed bumps )the front end of van sounded like it was actually hitting the pavement.the dealership replaced the sway bar bushings the first five times, then the sixth time we took it in, they replaced the struts and the sway bar link as well.that was july 2001.as of 2 weeks ago (dec. 2001) the bumping noise under the van has started again.

Strut towers have completely rusted through to the point where i can see the ground by looking through the strut towers from the inside of the engine compartment. There is very little structural support left in the strut towers.

There is a clunking loose rattle sound upon any type of movement located seemingly at the base of the steering column.the vehicle must be rolling forward or coming to a stop to be heard.i have taken it to a shop and they confirmed the noise but could not visibly see a problem and recommended i have the dealer take it apart. The clunking is getting progressivley worse and loud.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop for normal maintenance.the mechanic stated that the strut tower was corroded.the failure is due to defective material from the manufacturer.the vehicle has not been repaired.the contact wants chrysler to pay for the repair.the current and failure mileages were 105,000.

My 2000 dodge caravan van has a rusted shock tower on driver side due to faulty design.this issues has been reported on many dodge blog sites.

Vehicle constantly vibrates.fastervehicle goes, the faster itvibrates.dealer has replaced front and rear bearings/ put a 2nd set of tires/ changedstruts, and realigned the vehicle to rectifyproblem, nothing works.

Vehicle would start to pull to left when consumer was driving. Contacted dealer, and dealer had replaced brakes and tires, thinking that was the problem, but the problem still existed. .a bad tie rod failure caused the vehicle pull to the left.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contact stated while the vehicle was being serviced by a private mechanic, the mechanic stated the driver's side strut tower was severely rusted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 136,900.

Left strut tower completely rusted out. Major safety problem that chrysler knows about and should b recalled.

Strut tower on this van is almost completely rusted.to continue driving it presents a serious road hazard for i and my family!

Driver side strut tower is rusting through. Appears to be deformed around the rusted area. At this rate i think the strut tower could fail and cause an accident.

2000 dodge grand caravan. Front strut towers corroded and needed replacement at 62,000 miles.

Front strut upper support tower rusted out.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The contactstated that the strut tower located on the frontof the vehicle has rust on it and have completely rotted. The damage is visiblewhen you lift the front of the vehicle. The vehicle will be diagnosed by the dealer. The failure mileage was 128,000.

Upper strut towers on our 2000 dodge grand caravan are rusting out structurally with only 96,000 miles. It looks important to get fixed (which i will) before the front end collapses!

Vehicle constantly vibrates.fastervehicle goes, the faster itvibrates.dealer has replaced front and rear bearings/ put a 2nd set of tires/ changedstruts, and realigned the vehicle to rectifyproblem, nothing works.

I recently became aware of the problems with chrysler minivans regarding the design of thestrut towers.i own a dodge grand caravan.after doing research on the internet and speaking with multiple repair shops, it is unfathomable to me that these were not recalled.the danger from what is clearly a design flaw, should have been addressed by the company - especially when minivans are often used to carry children around.unless, of course, you don't mind driving around knowing your front suspension mechanism could push up through the hood.imagine being one railroad track away from such a disaster and not even knowing it.i believe the years affected were 1996-2002.

Strut tower on 2000 dodge grand caravan rusted through.

Our vehicle is on transmission #3 and it is less than 7 months old.it also has a front end suspension problem they haven't been able to fix.it has been in the shop a total of almost 30 days and out of commission for about 37.

Dt:the consumer took the vehicle to dealerfor a safety emission test.they said the left front strut tower was corroded at the top. Found this out on september 27, 2005, was told that there was technical service bulletin ( tsb)2304402, the consumercontacted chrysler, they said they would look into it, but that was basically it. There was no forewarning and no noise.

Have had front-end suspension clunk/knocking sound when traveling 30-35 mph.service dept. Has never been able to fix problem.there have been tsb's relating, but procedure didn't work.

Serious rust through of the strut tower on a 2000 dodge grand caravan made in usa. Suddenly appeared and rapidly progressing since jan 2008. Body very well cared for - no accidents, no rust in or out til now. This is not cosmetic as chrysler alleges - it is structural and a real safety concern since it looks like a really big pot hole could sent the strut up through the windshield!

Dt:noticed there was a squeaking sound coming from the front end of the vehicle onjuly 1, 2005. Was on vacation, and there was a squeaking noise the got progressively worse. The bolt separated from the arm,and it felt likedriving in a rut. A bolt in the control armbroke loose; it was tied to the bushing. Contacted the dealer, and was advised not to drive it.

Lower control arm on my 2000 grand caravan snapped off at 25mph.as a result of the broken bolt, the car came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road and the left front tire was at a 90 degree angle.i am in the stress testing business and i had the bolt visually analyzed by my engineers.they conclude the bolt had considerable fatigue.i am very concerned about this defect.i would have been killed if i was going faster.i have a meeting with chrysler on monday to discuss this situation and my options.i am very confused about what i should do and what my rights are.can the nhtsa help me?

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan se and when i had the oil changed last saturday, i was told that the "strut"" housing on the drivers side is rusting, flaking off. I could not find any recalls or safety issues noted, but, apparently, i am not the first one to complain of this problem. Plus, now i have to wait for the corrective kit...since it's back ordered. The area chrysler/dodge dealer stated that dodge did not mention this until the warranty was completed on this type of vehicle. I have my wife not driving the vehicle, since if the housing breaks, the strut will come thru the hood of the car.

My 2000 dodge grand caravan is rusting at the top of the strut towers on both the left and right sides.my mechanic says that failure is imminent.had a notice been given i could have probably got dodge to work on this problem before the warranty ran out.as is it is 10,000 over warranty, but the problem had to have existed before the warranty ended.no deaths or injuries yet.

I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan. The front left strut tower rusted, almost completely through. Had i not noticed this when checking the oil, the strut could have busted through the tower. I took the vehicle to two body shops, both of which told me that they replace a lot of these. This is a structural part of the van, not a fender or a door. The estimate for repairs is over $1200. In october of 2002, there was a service bulletin issued regarding strut tower corrosion.

Dt: dodge minivan 2000 grand caravan. Consumer complainedabout the strut platform where the strut meats part of the body. Also, called strut seating. The strut seating, or platform rusted prematurely.consumer took vehicle to garage last week, onjuly 7, 2005, andmechanic informed her that the rust was there, and this made vehicle unsafe. Mechanic said that he had never seen rust on this new vehicle. Consumer also contacted dealer, and dealer said that they had been getting complaints on this matter. Dealer was gilberts chrysler dodge. She then contacted manufacturer, and was told that there was no recall and nothing could be done until there were enough complaints filed. Consumervisited other dealers to look at similar vehicles and foundthat this problem existed in the other dodge vehicles, but not other manufactured vehicles.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 50 mph, a clunking noise was heard coming from the left front of the vehicle.it was driven to the dealer who determined the left front strut tower was corroded and needed to be replaced.

I brought my 2000 grand caravan in for routine oil change. Service mgr. I was informed that my left strut tower/strut seating was beginning to rust and that it would cost over $700 to repair. Stated it should be repaired soon or could cause serious accident if itfails. The right one is perfectly fine. I proceeded to do research on the internet and have found out that this is a very common "failure". Why has this not been addressed other than tsb 2304402? isn't this a safety issue and shouldn't there be a recall? what recourse do i have before i spend this money that i don't feel is my fault or cause?

My local auto service shop recently identified a corrosion crack in the left strut housing of my van.i went to a body shop and they indicated the strut could eventually break through the hood allowing the left front wheel to collapse.they contacted a local chrysler dealer service department who indicated that this was a known problem and they had a corrosion kit for that problem. The dealer service manager indicated that chrysler had a program to help pay for repairs but that my vehicle was near 100,000 miles and it might not qualify.he pursued it and chrylser did provide the kit and $200 to the auto body shop, which just paid for the kit and a small bit more.the total bill was $555.00 of which i paid $355.00. The body shop indicated that according to the chrysler instructions, if the problem got much worse before it was caught, the entire strut housing might have to be replaced, costing $2,000 or more.in talking to the originalservice shop, they have seen numerous occurrences of this apparent defect.my concern is that this problem apparently gets worse with the age of the vehicle and since chrysler vans are so popular this could be a life safety problem for those not aware of the corrosion defect, especially second owners (like me).if this is a known potential life safety manufacturing defect, why isn't the repair cost totally the responsibility of the manufacturer and shouldn't owners be notified even if they bought it as a used car?

Dt*:the contact stated while having routine maintenance performed, the independent repair shop determined the vehicle had excessive rust on the strut towers.the manufacturer was alerted.the vehicle is located in a salt belt state.updated 5/2/2006 -

I was traveling on the highway at 55 mph with my wife and 3 kids in my 2000 dodge grand caravan. Suddenly the passenger side rear tire blew out and we heard a loud rumbling noise. I was able to cross over 2 lanes to get to an exit without losing control or hitting any other vehicles, my wife and kids were very shook up. After inspecting the blown tire i found 3 seperate slits in the side of the tire were it appeared the sidewall just blew out. I could not find any trace of a nail or any other object in the treads or the sidewall. I brought the tire to national tire and battery and the technician told me that the rim was slightly bent and that this caused the blow out. I am expecting to pay about $135 for the repair, but i have talked with several people who know tires fairly well and they said a slightly bent rim should not have caused this problem. I am more concerned that the other 3 tires may blow at any time and that my family could be at risk.i am asking the technician to check all the tires for any defects after experiencing this, hopefully if there is an issue they will not hide it from me so they can make a profit. I feel like i was very lucky there were no injuries in this case, but i worry about the next time. (tiresize: p215/65r15)

Air conditioning system had to be fixed within 3 years of having the car- which was bought brand new in 2000.we spent over 2k dollars to fix a huge leak and repair the two systems in the car.i (since 2005) am now seeing that the air stops cooling if i idle or we drive for too long, it will no longer blow out the front nor be cool...it blows out the top (like the defroster) and is not cooled.

The original, a replacement installed in oct 2001 and that failed this july 2003.

I was told by dodge that we have only had one recall on our vehicle.your records show 6 and we have never gotten anything.

1. Nothing2. The fan belt on our 2000 grand caravan has needed to be replaced minimum of seven times in the past two and half years3. Our mechanic has fixed the problem, without charging for his labour, all seven times. He has been in contact with chrysler. After the first couple of fan belt problems, they sent him a kit that repairs fan belts. We still have the problem. Chrysler denies any faulty mechanics on their part. We have the past three faulty fan belts.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph under normal road conditions, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 95 mph.after being taken to the service dealer, it was determined that the cruise control cable bent, and caused the sudden acceleration.the consumer tried using the brakes with no success, the consumer finally turned the ignition off and was able to coast to the emergency lane. The consumer used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and shifting the transmissions in to low. Updated 12/28/06.

The gas pedal broke off from the accelerator cable while we going 65 mph and my son had to drive to safty by reaching down to the floorboard and pulling the cable while trying to steer the van, as we were in a construction zone and there was no where to pull over.this seems like a very unsafe problem.

While driving with the cruise control set on 72 mph vehicle accelerated up to 94 mph. Consumer disengaged the cruise control. However, vehicle continued to accelerate. As a result, consumer turned the vehicle off, and took the key out of the ignition. The vehicle finally stopped. No impact reported.

Air bags and cruise control failed on 2000 dodge grand caravan.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan. While driving at 50 mph, the horn and cruise control failed to function and the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 04v480000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 97,000.

*nlm

2000 grand caravan recall for clockspring.consumer states that he mailed two different letters with a copy of the invoice for reimbursement but never received a reply.*njthe consumer stated when the air bag light stayed on, the horn, the chimes for the lights and the ignition did not work.the front passenger window regulator was replaced.

Water was leaking through the windshield onpassenger'sside. Dealer won't admit it wasa defective windshield.

Water kept entering passenger cabin whenever it rained due to open seam on windshield beneath the windshield wipers.*mr consumer paid $27063 for the repair. After notifying dodge, they reimbursed her half of the expense even though it was over the mileage and year of the warranty. *ph

While driving in inclement weather the windshield wiperscame on and off ontheir own intermittently. Dealer was aware of the problem.

The contact owns a 2000 dodge grand caravan.the contact stated that the windshield wipers have failed intermittently for three months.visibility is impaired during rainy conditions.the contact stated that the headlights have failed since the vehicle was purchased.he stated that the plastic lens is frosting and turning yellow from oxidizing, causing poor illumination at night.the current mileage is 81,000 and failure mileage was 79,780.

Windshield wipers do not turn off when the switch is turned off.the wipers swipe an additional 2 - 8 times after they are turned off, even if the engine is off.the dealer tells me they will never fail to come on, they only fail to go off, and that changing the switch may not eliminate the problem.i am concerned that one day the switch will not respond when the wipers are needed and visibility will be compromised.it has gotten progressively worse since i have had the van.

1. Had a flat and tried to lower the spare tire which is held up by a winch underneath the vehicle.2. Followed the instructions in the vehicle to lower the spare tire using the supplied wrench; however, the tire would only lower about two inches and not lower far enough for the spare to be removed from the 't' that holds it in place when the wheel is secured.3. The spare would not come down so i had to remove the flat tire from the vehicle and get a ride to get the wheel fixed then get a ride back to the vehicle to re-install the tire. After several attempts at lowering the spare, i still could not get it to come down so i took the vehicle to and auto repair shop. The repair shop was not able to get the wheel to come down either and had to cut the "t" to remove the wheel.

Vehicle has 16 inch wheels and full wheel covers (hub caps). I removed the wheel covers at about 56000 miles to rotate the tires. This is the first time that i had removed the covers. When i removed the covers three or four of the molded plastic clips broke off all four covers. I contacted the dealer who contacted chrysler rep greg jankowski who refused any assistance due to mileage. I contacted chrysler customer relations rep martin shager who refused any assistance due to mileage. I have lost one cover on the road. When wheel covers come off at road speeds, i see that as a safety problem. I do not see mileage as an issue. If the plastic retaining clips break off in two years, i see that as a structure or material problem.

We hit a pot hole in the road going about 40mph, the right front alloy wheel on our dodge grand caravan actually spit in half. This could have cause serious accident, thankfully it didn't. Chrysler should have to do something about this as this should never happen to a wheel like this.
