Horn communication works intermittently comes on and off. Airbag light comes on dashboard, and there is no cruise control. Dealership is aware of problem.the failed part is the clock spring. - 96 dodge grand caravan w/3.8 v6 and 41te 4spd transmision- 2 transmission failures- 1st went to about 125000, then kept hitting the "limp home mode"- 2nd has "torque converter lockup" problem, shops say rebuild again, after only 38000 miles.- fan relay went out before recall was issued, had to replace the radiator out of pocket.- had clock spring replaced after component failure relating to it (horn, cruise etc)- union city ga dealer attempted to fix the fuel return line issue, botched it up and caused major leak when refueling.they re-fixed it after much complaining.

Failing clocksprings allow for a dangerous cruise control mode as well as air bag failures.

"air bag" light is illuminated (known problem),the cruise control will activate upon pushing the button, but the cancel button when pushed does not deactivate the cruise control...the deactivation of the cruise control requires the brake to be applied.control of the vehicle on wet roads, using cruise control, and having to deactivate the cruise control via the brakes....can be a bit of a challenge...thanks!! - steve dowling.

Defect clockspring leads to airbag light is on, and propely mailfunction. The instrument panel started burning in the switch contacts and smoke came out of the dashboard. The car was parked with two small kids sitting in their baby seats. One of the kids, 3 years old manged to knock on the window for getting help. The fire stopped without making additional damages and nobody were injured. The fuses did not blow.

I purchased this vehicle october of 1995, in march of 96 the fuse block had to be replaced along with a multi function switch because the wipers would come on by themselves while i was driving, a contact and plunger kit because the right sliding door would not always unlock when using the unlock button, the fuel tank was replaced because it only held 12 gallons of gas when it was supposed to hold 18 - 20, the tank was installed so that the tank was bowed in the middle and the front door panel was reattached to the door and the left sliding door was repaired because it would not unlock with the key.in august of 1997 the switch for the interior lights was replaced because the lights would flicker, the left side sliding door lock was replaced again along with the rear door latch.in sept. 0f 97 a gear was replaced for the power steering, the left sliding door had moulding replaced because the clips were broken.in august of 98 the stereo was replaced because the treble would fade, the vehicle shut off while i was driving no one could explain this phenomenon, the relay switch was replaced and the rack and pinion was replaced also the multi-function switch was replaced again.in sept. Of 98 the car was back in the shop because the air bag light came on.evidently when they replaced the relay switch just 7 days earlier things in the dash started working that had not worked up til that point for instance i was not aware that the chime would go off if the blinker was left on for over a mile.it took 7 days to get my car back because they found out that there were never any screws holding the air bag in the module so as far as i know for the two years that my husband and i were driving this car there was no protection by and air bag.this past week july 1, we were on vacation and we had to replace the transmission to the tune of $l771.the car is back in the shop today (7/6) because it appears that the transmission continues to slip and run at high rpm.please help!!

Vehicle's air bag failed on 1996 dodge grand caravan.*mrin april 2001 the vehicles air bag light illuminated and remained on.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that the air bag failed.the dealer replaced the air bag along with the clockspring.the consumer paid $842.92 for the replacement.in january 2001 the consumer received a recall notice related to the clockspring assembly.the manufacturer was contacted and reimbursed the consumer $152. Which they deemed was enough to cover the clockspring assembly.the consumer contested the amount of the reimbursement but has not heard from the manufacturer regarding the matter.*nlm

1996 grand caravan taken in for service due to recall notice . Fuel rail and air bags.air bag light was on continuously, technician replaced clockspring but air bag light continued to be on.it was that the said air bag module would have to be replaced and this was not covered under recall.apparently, this is not unusual with this make and model.air bag module replacement was estimated to be $400.00.this should also be covered by recall, as many others have experienced this same problem.*la

The clockspring in the steering column failed.this causes the horn, cruise control and airbag system to fail.there is no indication that the horn is out.only the airbag light on the dash comes on.you don't know the horn is out until you need it!i had the same problem on my personal van and on my company van.they were bought from different dealers at different times.it is very hard to believe that a single driver can have the same problem on two different cars without there being an inherent design defect in this part.please investigate this problem before lives are lost through the loss of the horn or airbags that don't work when needed.the conductors that feed the explosive charge to the airbag are open during this continuous fault and the airbag will not deploy in an accident.

Air bag light came on, and horn and cruise control failed simultaneously.many other 1996 grand caravan owners have reported this same failure, and have been told the clock spring has failed.given the number of identical complaints, this should be a recall item.i'm certain many more owners would report this if they were aware of so many others experiencing this problem, but give the modest cost of repair ($250 est.), most people have probably paid for this repair without reporting it since the potential safety problems are so serious (no horn or air bag!!)given the modest cost of repair and the serious injury that could result from not correcting this, dodge should pay for this repair before someone is injured or killed.isn't this what nhtsa is for?please help force dodge to be responsible.similar models and other model years have had problems with the same part, as well.please respond, and let me know what i can do to encourage dodge to correct this situation.

This car has gone to the dealer so many times and not been fixed. After my warrantee expired i took the van to a trusted mechanic and at a great cost to me is the van being repaired.the dealer never once acknowledge or fixed any problems that the independant car mechanic was able to find easily.

All 3 component failures listed in complaint due to failure of clock spring assembly.chrysler is well aware of this problem as they have replaced over 124,000 of them but refuses to pay for the repair.my dealer qouted me $250 cost to repair.this is in line with research results for cost of this repair.hopefully nhtsa can exert pressure on chrysler to cover this defect as it is clearly a safety issue.thanks for listening.

The air-bag warning light flickered as the steering wheel was turned, then, eventually stayed lit. Dodge refused to cover the repair. It has not been repaired due to cost of diagnosis and repair. Also have poor opinion of service department.

Consumer was traveling at 50 to 55 mph, whenvehicle hit a deer.none of theairbags deployed, and the vehicle was totalled.

Right before vehicle shifts into overdrive there is a jerky motion. Dealer cannot find problem, at 40 -45 mph. Also, transmission has to be rebuilt, and airbag light stays on.dealer says it's due to an open circuit, brakes replaced twice,rotors replaced. The consumer had transmission problems numerous times. Noise in engine while driving due to serpentin belt and tensioner failure.

Ea 01 007 air bag clockspring: consumer states the air bag light remains on while driving,also the horn and the cruise control works intermittently when turning to the right. The dealer notified. Dealer stated it could be a bad wire int he steering column or the clock spring, but could not determine problem unless steering wheel is taken apart.

Clockspring assembly in the steering column that carries power to the driver side airbag installed in the steering wheel is broken and thus there is no electric connection to the airbag. The failure is due to the way the connecting wire, consisting of a foil on a flexible belt, is wound into "clockspring". The belt makes two bends which causes stretching pressure to the foil and in the long run wears the foil and breaks the connection. The same configration carries also the signal horn connection and when the parallel running foils break also horn fails to work.

The airbag indicator has turned on and will not go out. No failure codes are repoted. The horn will not work and the cruise control will not work. The windshield wipers go on by themselves occasionally. The left door lock will unlock and lock quickly when the key is turned to open the door.

This may not be the appropriate forum for this concern, but i was unable to e-mail the web master.i recently read that the nhtsa conducted some suv/van vs. Car (accord) crashes, which yielded disproportionate damage in the car and troubling information about the passenger airbags in the dodge caravan.results of the crash test, suggest that deployment of the bag in this 35 mph collision would likely result in serious neck injuries and/or death.as owners of a 1996 dodge grand caravan, we were obviously troubled by this information.i visited your web site today in hopes of finding more information about this recent crash test, but have not been successful in this endeavor.i'm interested in reading the results, if they are available and learning how the nhtsa and/or chrysler plan to address this problem.we are currently in the final month of our 3 year warranty period on our vehicle and i wonder if, based upon the results of this crash test, i can claim that the bag is defective and request either replacement with a new lower-powered bag or repurchase of the vehicle.please advise.thank you!

The airbag-indicator light started lighting up intermittently, at first, but now stays lit all the time.i soon discovered that the horn, another safety feature, is also disabled/nonfunctional, as is the cruise control.these three features, two of them being important safety features (airbag and horn) , are all apparently wired together into one circuit.i took my van to a mechanic who checked fuses= ok; problem is "airbag clockspring." he contacted 3 other mechanics and a dodge dealer, and all said they were familiar with this problem with dodge caravan, andthe problem is with the airbag clockspring.the mechanic explainedthe clockspring needs to be reset, but he and other mechanics won't attempt to fix, as they're worried about deploying airbag.the 2 dealers saidthe airbag maydeploy on its own, or not deploy at all -- and thatrepair involves replacing the airbag clockspring.i'm upset and want chrysler to pay for this repair -- this is not a maintenance item/issue -- this is a safety issue -- when the airbag light comes on, indicatingfailure (clockspring), the horn also is disabled.you cannot pass inspection w/out the horn working.i'm afraid airbag will deploy accidentally while i'm driving.i cannot afford this repair -- est. $95/clockspring + $200/labor = $300 or more!the mechanic knew of at least 1 other person who had exact same problem with caravan; also, the two dodge dealers in my area also stated they very familiar with this problem occuring in the dodge caravan! many of these failures are occurring, & most people are not reporting them!!in addition, mechanic said horn could be rewired to bypass the airbag/cruise con. Circuit, for ~ $50 -- but still have to worry about airbag deploying at wrong time/not at all + still have no cruise control.also in steering,there's a loud whiney noise when steering wheel is turned;other times loss of power steering=difficulttosteer! +serpentinebelt broke off at ~32,000 mi!$700torepair!!

At 57k miles, the light came on for the airbag.this caused failure of horn & airbag.the manufacturer said it wasn't their problem.dealer said they have had multiple cases of this.but each refused to repair it at no cost and charged over $300 for the safety repair.i am deeply concerned that this safety issue is not covered.it can cause financial hardships for not only us, but others as well.this vehicle has never been wrecked and i am the original owner. It appears that chrysler has put a price on safety allowing those who cannot afford to repair their defective airbags to risk injury or death.please let us know what can be done for the manufacturer to assume responsibility.thanks, i appreciate your help.

Ea 01 007/air bag clock spring:inoperative horn operation. Also,air bag sensor light remained on on. Dealer notified and informed consumer that they are unaware of any recall, and any repairs would be at consumer cost. Consumer also states cruise control failed.

The clockspring failed on the date indicated.the air-bag, horn and cruise control were non-functional during the failure.i replaced the unit with a new one.i investigated why the unit failed by disassembling it.the flat ribbon cable in the unit failed from inadequate strain relief at the point of connection.all 5 conductors were broken due to repeated hard bending without adequate support at the connection point.

The failure of the clockspring assembly resulted in the air bag light being illuminated, and i'm assuming that the drivers side bag was also inoperative. The horn and cruise control were definitely inoperative. I purchased a replacement clockspring ($75) and installed it myself (2 hours). The nature and frequency of this failure would seem to warrant a recall, in my opinion.

Airbag light came on permanently on 10/10/01.shortly thereafter, discovered both horn and cruise control inoperable.remembered internet report about nhtsa stepping up probe of chrylser minivans for clockspring failure complaints (internet report from 3/2000).mentioned report to dealer personnel when took vehicle in to dodge dealer for service.they indicated no formal recall on this part yet, but save receipt in event future recall required.sending this information as further evidence to nhtsa that there is a problem with this part on these particular vehicles.

Windshield wipers still engage by themselves originally repaired 05/99.transmission went out at30904 miles.airbag light came on and horn stopped working had to replace click spring.car stall while driving said it needed tune-up.when using ac or driving in rain and making a turn steering gets stiff and cannot control.interior lights flash dealer could not duplicate.power door locks lock and unlock by themselves.had to replace axle due to it being bent when new transmission was put in.had to get new tires because axle threw off balance.keep replacing batteries.drove car for 10 minutes and fan came on and stayed on after car was turned off.

The tackometer and speedometer flatlined to 0 then returned to normal, the horn and cruise control, have stopped working and the airbag light stays on most of the time.the transmission had a total failure in the highway and had to be rebuilt.the wipers occasionally come on by themselves and cycle a couple of times and then stop and occasionally stop in the middle of the windshield (this has been tothe dealer in madison heights, va several times for repair under warranty, but not since the warranty expired.the left speakers on the sound suystem periodically go off and on while the system is on.the starter went out and had to be replaced the end of june, 2000.

Coolant gauge, tach,and speedometer all flatline at same time and return intermittently, air bag warning light stays on and horn and cruise control stopped working at same time. I first noticed that the airbag light on the dashboard of my 1996 dodge grand caravan was on while driving through a parking lot.this first occurred on 7/3/2001.it went off after 5 minutes.the pattern of the airbag coming on started occurring more regularly and staying on longer.we took the minivan into koon's dodge (falls church, va) on saturday, july 14, 2001.they diagnosed the problem as a problem with the clock-spring in the steering column that had gone bad and had made the airbag go bad.they gave me an estimate of $800 to fix it.i asked them whether dodge would pay for it since having an airbag go bad should not be an ordinary "wear and tear" item for any automobile.the assistant manager (scott) told me that his boss (ray rasado) would have to talk with dodge on monday, 7/16/2001 to see if they would pay for it.i called back on monday and they said that dodge refused to pay for it.dodge had said it was not their fault that the clockspring had gone bad and made the airbag go bad.i then called dodge myself and talked to their warranty department (jessica).after talking with her dodge manager, she said that they would not pay for it.she said that there were no engineering problems with either the clockspring or the airbag.she gave me a case reference number of 8889836.i called koon's, the dodge dealership, back and asked whether they were positive that the airbag itself was bad in addition to the clockspring.the reason being that a repair of the clockspring was approximately $200 versus $800 for both the clockspring and airbag.they again said that the clockspring had made the airbag go bad and that the airbag would not deploy unless it was replaced along with the clockspring.i told them based on their recommendation to replace the clockspring and airbag.the final cost was $816.37.i strongly believe that this is an engineering safety defect on dodge's behalf.the consumer should not be put at physical risk for this.

Serpentine belt or tensioner clip has had to be repaired 4 times (towed every time) electrical problems since the beginning; turn the key and the windshield wipers start going, turn the key off and the wipers "keep" going, take the key totally out of the ignition and the wipers go and the "dinging" alarm that tells you the lights are on or the key is in, starts.(i seriously thought the car was possessed)orturn the key and "nothing" comes on except the engine. I've replaced the battery 5 times at least - it's usually better w/ a new battery for a little while. Have had to have the window motor and assembly replaced on drivers side twice and 5 times on the passenger side.most recent was 4/04, whichwas replaced 7/04 again.the side sliding doors on both side do not lock, if you push the button down, you can't get it back up. The rear hatch is damaged from closing the door, looks like i was hit in the rear, but have not been. In october of 1999, our van was overheating and we had to have the radiator fan relay replaced.two weeks later we received a recall notice and were reimbursed by daimler chrysler.in february 2001 our airbag indicator light came on and the horn stopped working.we replaced the clock spring.in june 2001 we had to replace our fuel tank because it was cracked.we continued to smell gas and had to have our fuel rail replaced because it was leaking fuel onto the engine. Chrysler's improper action on air bag recall #02v293000 .when symptoms appeared 2 years prior to this recall, the dealer replaced both the clock spring and air bag, based on chrysler's best service information.at the time i complained to a regional service representative stating that air bags rarely go bad and only need to be replaced after activation.he agreed by compensating half of the total repair cost.lo and behold this recall shows up identifying this safety issue.i submitted the proper paperwork to chrysler to participate in the recall and they denied the air bag portion of my repair stating it was not part of the recall.i feel total consideration should be given to the entire repair as this was their original solution to this safety issue.i felt my hands were tied at the time of repair because i wanted the safety of having the air bag for my family and was actually afraid of accidental deployment.you should direct chrysler to provide full remedy qualified participants in this program.do not allow them to shirk this obligation.

The cable on my integrated child seat failed.there was no accident but it has been difficult to latch for a while.there was a recall related to the latch plate.there were no obsticles in that area and even the dealership agreed that it is a broken cable.my seat is probably the oldest of these integrated seats and i'm concerned that the cable would wear and just break on seats that are built in.dodge has agreed to replace the necessary part if i pay for the laber.the total cost is about $650 of which i will have to pay about $120.i'm concerned that others may also be having this problem.it also occurs to me that if my cables snapped when there was no crash what would happen if there was a crash.maybe these seats were safe when they were new but are the now?

Left side intergrated css belts no longer stay tight when buckled.once buckled and pull on belts, they will release.child is no longer secure.dealer says to fix, part alone (whole new icss module) will be $409.very unrealistic price when for $100 can easliy buy a car seat .have two children still using both icss.do not feel icss should have failed after 3 1/2 years of use and then be so unreasonable to fix.

The built-in child seat gets stuck with the child in the seat and when the seats are close and then a child cant get in them.chrysler did a recall and installed a safty clip to address getting the child out. But the problem continues that you cant use the seat when the get stuck in the closed position so you cant put a child in the seat.also note chrysler has change the mechinism on newer vans.they gave a an escape route not a fix to the problem of the belts getting stuck due to food falling in the lock area.remeber we are talking about a child seat.i would also like to report i have brought the car in to the dealership three times to unlock the seat belts when the get stuck perminantly closed.this time i was told i would have to call chrysler customer service which i call over 25 time at the dealership, and from my home and work only to receive a busy signal every time.i ask the dealership to call since they gave me the number and they declined.please let me know how many other complaints have been issued on this child seat system.

A few weeks later, the service engine soon light came on and stayed on steadily and they could find nothing wrong with the van at that time either . The *code* they found said *oxygen sensor* but they reset it. Four days later, we were heading back to charleston (100 miles) and had made it around 40 miles on interstate going around 65-70 miles an hour when, without notice, the service engine soon light started blinking and the car completely lost power . We had to pull over on the side of the emergency lane and wait until a tow truck could tow us back to lexington ... The van was taken again to nasco where they thought the problem could be the spark plugs and wiring so they changed all that out to the tune of $400.00 plus the $80.00 for towing... Then....two days later the van was driving again to charleston on interstate and at almost the exact same spot --it cut off again !! the van had to get towed yet again to orangeburg ( closer to where it cut off ) and the mechanics there could find absolutely nothing wrong with the van !!!in town, the van does fine ...but when you are on interstate and going a high rate of speed for a prolonged period of time ...and it cuts off ---something is definitely wrong with the van !! it is very dangerous to be driving at such a high rate of speed and then losing power ..and must be addressed before a death occurs !!last weekend , my husband took the van on the interstate again to try it out and sure enough around 50 miles out it cut off yet again with the service engine soon light on .i notice there are several other instances of this happening to the grand caravans and think it should definitely be investigated and a recall issued.

Dodge '96 minivan stalling problem while in operation. Start up time 5-10 minutes later(very dangerous).transmission slipped out of gear; problem escalated to full replacement.not satisfied with replacement -"bumps" on second and third gears up and down.these have been costly repairs.service engine soon light would not go out no matter what repairs were performed - full fuel and electrical systems. Rps raced to 15k.replaced cam sensor, harness, hoses etc. *nlm

I own a 1996 dodge grand caravan with several electical problems.first the check engine light is on and will not reset.all of the fans for the heater and a/c doesn't work.the rear wiper is continuously working.we have had the van to the mechanic several times(too many to count) and they can not find anything wrong.the company really needs to recall this issue.

The consumer believes that the failure of turn signals, the coming on of wipers by themselves and shorting out the battery and the vehicle stalling were a fault of the electrical system which the dealer was unable to locate the problem.

Re:dodge grand caravan se, l996 continual problems with electrical system.sudden lack of power when driving on freeway, narrowly avoiding serious accidents.in researching on various web sites, this seems to be a recurring problem for other owners as well.the dealer has kept the car twice so they could 'duplicate the problem', they replace one sensor or another.last replacement seems to have worked but still don't trust the car and won't drive on freeway or far from home. Now have trouble starting the car, the dealer said it's probably the crank sensor. They say since i only have 33,000 miles on the car, it shouldn't be the starter.also, i have history of the wipers turning on and off whenever they feel like it. They also establish their own rhythm when working.the wiper sensor has been replaced 3 times.the computer never shows an error code so obviously, it isn't working either.the speedometer will float and sometimes will show 0 miles an hour when i'm moving.they replaced the speedometer sensor twice and now it seems to be working.i have seen all of these complaints listed on various web sites.the dealer acts like i'm crazy and they have never heard of these problems before.my main concern is the sudden lack of power, the engine just turns off, no power steeringeither when this happens.i wonder how many accidents have been a result of this obvious defect... As soon as i can afford it, i will be replacing this van with a non-dodge vehicle. *nlm

Electrical systemfailure, causing the windshield wipers, radio and door locks to activate themselves on and off intermittently. The car is also having trouble starting because of electrical failures.

Had the 1696 dodge grand caravan for almost 3 years , electrical problems i think. The speedometer, odometer, gear selector, water coolant gauge, fuel gauge stops working while driving and when i shut car off the gear selector and odometer stays illuminated even with the car off and lights off , or on.. Also the tachometer freezes up on a certain rpm . Depending what the rpm was wheneverything stoped working right.. Windshield wipers turn on automatically but 99.9% of the time they wont shut off even if i select it to shut off , they keep going and going even on dry days and no rain .took it to mechanic and they cant find what is wrong with it and they charge me 60 to 90 dollars just to test it and they never come up with a solution unless they disconnect the battery and let it sit for a few minutes so the computer or something resets, but this happens about every 3 to 6 months and also before this happens the car runs rough at idle or sitting at a red light or at a stop . The driver seat buckle sometimes dont unlatch, i have to use extra force to unlatch them, sometimes i dont even wear a seat belt cause i am scared that if something happens and i need to get out of the car quickly that i wont be able to. The middle bench seat seems loose , everythime i come to a stop or i take off a clucking sound comes from the middle row seats, i checked it and it seemed like its all locked in but i dont trust it.. I would never purchase a chrysler product ever again even if it is given to me for free or even give it to my worst enemy.. Thank you .. Jz.

Steering column electrical problems; turning the steering wheel causes various electrical inputs such as turning on windshield wipers, honking horn, causing the abs failure light to come on and causing all electrical systems to short out including all gauges and even causing the engine to turn off. *nlm

When driving on the highway and going 65 to 70 mph, the car loses rpm's, backfires, jerks, loses speed.i am unable to give it gas. I have to pull off into the emergency lane and it slows to a stop and stalls. I cannot start it back, however if i set for a few minutes, open and slam the hood, it will start back.my service engine light comes on and the code that was found said that a misfire was found in cylinder 6.it has happened since fixing that problem, but the service engine light went off.i have been told to try to fix many different problems but no one, not even the chrysler dealership can tell me for sure what is wrong and needs to be fixed.this is amazing to me, because i can find many people who have the same problem, and not only with 1996 grand caravans.this is a very dangerous problem because of the sudden stalling at such high rates of speed.if should be required to be recalled and found what the problem is.i would like to know for sure what to do to fix it because i cannot afford to purchase another one and i love this van (less this major problem).please help.

Intermittently when left turn signal is activated windshield wipers come on.dealer has inspected and repaired vehicle, however problem has reoccurred. The vehicle would not start due to battery failure. The sliding door does not shut properly. Passenger door does not lock due to door lock motor failure. Drivers window makes noise due to regulator failure.

Electrical problems with the airbag light coming on/ horn failure and cruise control failure.

Fan relay continued to activate the fan after the ignition was turned off causing the need to replace 3 batteries stranding the family each time.dealer assurred me that this diagnosis was hard to pin down due to the intermittent nature of the power drain.numerous other electrical problems have occurred with this vehicle, including wiper motors and switches, automatic door lock soleniods and vent window motors.

Daimlerchrysler reference # 08756857 - battery has failed 4 times chrysler has reimb. Twice and still refused to send me known service bulletins #082995 &08195 relating to problems with dead batteries. Also requested info on fluid bubbling over onto enginefrom june 97 and sept. 99.i have written to chrysler and have been told that "the information you are seeking is either unavailable from daimlerchrysler motors corporation or considered proprietary" and was signed by glenn s. Cameron, senior staff.

Battery cracked and leaked acid into wiring cover and air cleaner housing causing vehicle not to start, battery was replaced and began to leak again approximately four months later, seven months later the battery had to be boosted to start vehicle, again dealer replaced the battery, battery was replaced a fourth time along with a faulty starter.

Defective electronic charging system caused over charging of the battery.this caused sulfuric acid to spew from the battery spilling onto the main electrical wiring harness that is routed under the battery.there was a complete failure of electrical items.

Battery blew up, resulting in an accident. Also fuel tank leak.
