I bought the van a year ago in august within a couple of weeks i had already brought it and had to have the transmission sensor replaced. A couple of weeks later the tower on the head of the motor broke and i had to get another motor put in. I have other minor but the major problem now is the transmission sensor again and the abs brakes. I'm looking at thousands of dollars more on the top of everything else. In search for the parts at a reasonable price which is useless, one of the guys i was talking e-mailed me the recalls on that van and told me to look into it so here i am. Heidi bergeron help! please i was also told about a mechanic that also looked at the van that a speed sensor is out and he claims i need a new motor plug which all they sell is the full wiring harness which is thousands of dollars more than that.i bought the van from it's original owner in july of 2002. *nlm

While driving through standing water, serpentine belt comes off.

Transmission delays going into drive and it goes into (limp mode) many times it will not shift into third gear, itwill only stay in second gear. If it does shift into third gear you may be driving along and it will all of the sudden shift down into second gear harshly.this is very dangerous, especially when it happened on the highway. This is the second grand caravan that i've had with the same identical problem and chrysler refuses to help.

V6 3.3 l enginei bought it 3 years ago with 77000 miles on it and shortly therefater the following problems have been noted: especially in cold weather, the transmission would notengage even after shifting to "d".it would work after getting warmed up.frequent jerks with the transmission, after braking and resuming accelerationsharp clunking sound from the drivers side in the front when starting to move. Water pump replaced due to whistling noise.

Timing cover leaking due to failure, water pump failed.

Belt tensioner of pulley housing cracked, and the belt ripped apart.

Motor mounts failed.

Motor mounts failed.

Replaced broken motor mount to due clunking noise.

The casting on the head that holds the rocker assembly broke. This appears to be a design flaw due to pattern failure. My mechanic reported he has seen 4 instances of this failure on dodge vans since mine was diagnosed and repaired. He also noted that chrysler corp. Is now using studs instead of bolts to hold rockers.

Possible engine failure is causing the check engine light to flash while driving vehicle also dies while driving. Nlm

Without warning- engine stalls in traffic, usually while decelerating, and can only restart with gas pedal floored.problem is intermittent, sporadic, and cannot be duplicated.dlr/mfr. Say correct by warranty, but problem may not show for months.

While driving at 25 mph tensioner of vehicle sheared off without any warning. Power steering was lost along with alternator and water pump. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

The serpentine belt tensioner fell off the vehicle.i started the engine and noticed i couldn't steer the vehicle. I checked and saw that the belt tensioner fell off the vehicle. If i had been driving at highway speed and this happened i wouldn't be able to steer the vehicle. I inspected the failed component and could see that the stud which fastens the device to the engine block was broken due to a stress consentration in the stud material. It was not broken due to too much torque when attached to the block. I could tell this due to the fracture configuration. Typically a torsional fracture can be seen because the material is broken at a 45 degree angle. This fracture was due to a stress consentration in the material.has this happened to anyone else?you probably couldn't tell because the vehicle, if traveling on the highway, would be so badly damaged you wouldn't know what caused the crash.i would suggest you look into this.

Tensioner pulley for serpentine belt sheared off engine, causing complete loss of steering control. Vehicle had to be towed, no accident.this is the second tensioner to break on this vehicle since new.trans axle has been repaired 8 times since new for slamming into gear on shifts.transaxel finally went into limp along mode and had to be replaced with a new factory rebuilt unit at a cost of $1486.88 to me.

Belt tensioner fell off.

Automatic serpentine belt tensioner bolt sheared off, causing tensioner to fall off.

Check valve failed.

Evaporator began leaking coolant last spring; this is a non moving part that should last for many, years; it is believed that the coolant used r134 is corrosive to the material that chrysler used to manufacture the evaporators; there are hundreds of complaints about this problem on the internet.

Consumer would be smelling a lot of smoke while driving. Did not stop, but continued towards home. Upon arrival, after stopping vehicle, lifted hood and noticed fan motor was burned out.wires connectingfan had burned/ locked down, andcausedcompressor to shutdown.

The air conditioner has an enternal leak.i have had it charged three times so far and the mech says it is a recall problem and to contact the mfgr which i am doing here.please advise of the recall procedure and how i can get this fixed.it is expensive getting it charged everytime i turn around due to a malfunction of the mfgr.please advise....

My air conditioner was diagnosed as a faulty evaporator on two different occasions by two separate and different dealers...........neither of whom wanted to fix the problem..........the problem exists tothe current day ............and even dodge says its the dealers option to fix the a/c..........even though i have the "best warranty" in the buisiness... I am between a rock and a hard place.....or should i say hot place cause my van is a furnace in the summer with no a/c and three sweating kids.................if possible please help with who i contact to resolve this problem..... No one wants to fix my car because as they put it " we dont get paid enuough from dodge to do the job".

A/c evaporator failed.

Air conditioner won't work, have talked to many people with caravans with the same problem.also, have seen a large number of vehicles with the paint chipping.the previous owner told us at the time that we purchased that there was supposed to be some type of recourse on the paint on the caravan.i have only seen this problem on the 1993's and earlier models.we own a 1994, same color, driftwood, and have had no problems whatsoever with air or paint.

I brought my veh.in twice within 2 years,as my air conditioner wasn't working properly.both times i was told it was ok even though the 2nd time they had to add 1 lb. Of 134-a.3 years later in 1998 it totally quit.i took it elsewhere and was told the evaporator was leaking.i contacted chrysler and they refused to fix it.i beleive they are installing defective evaporators as my sister-in-laws 93 voyager had hers replaced,a friends 92 voyager had theirs replaced, and a bus company i worked for had 3 voyagers that had to be repaired because of leaks within 2 years.i don't know if this stuff is poisonous but i have been breathing it for 5 years now.

Air conditioner compressor keeps coming on and shutting off immediately.air does not cool.while driving the rear liftgate support rod broke the bolt attaching it to the side of vehicle.the support arm ripped the roof liner as it blew out.

This is the second replacement transmission installed in this vehicle. I am the original owner and have followed the maintanence schedule.these transmission failures are going to cause a severe rear end type accident soon if chrysler is not held responsible for a defective product.

Air conditioner compressor failed.

Evaporator failed, causing odor.

Had problems with my 86 van, more with the 93 van and expecting more with my 98 van i must be nuts to have purchased the 98 van. The abs brakes in1993 van failed and i was able to stop before i ran the light, a few days later they came back on out of nowhere. I do not feel i should be driving a car that i can not trust the brakes.

Air conditioner cooling lines failed.

Radio failed two times.

The jack that came equipped with the vehicle suddenly collapsed while in use.consumer believed that the stationery bolt was defective.upon inspection it was evident that the treads in the stationary bolt failed completely. *nlm

Headlight lenses are yellowing and causing poor visibility.dealer has been notified. The maufacturer says the problem is caused by the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Left and right plastic headlight lens have taken on a yellow tint that has reduced the illumination to a point that it isa hazard to drive at night. Have noticed other dodge vans with the same problem. A local dealer told me there has been no recall on these headlights, and that the entire assembly must be replaced. I feel the material used in the headlight lens is faulty.how do i go about getting a relacement if this is the case?dt

Transmission delays going into drive and it goes into (limp mode) many times it will not shift into third gear, itwill only stay in second gear. Fuel rail is leaking on right side corner excessively with fumes entering compartment.recall was initiated but did not include this year van. Please describe details

High pressure fuel line is leaking. Due to location of exhaust system location, and high pressure <40psi and more> from line, this could result in car fire. In talking with 3 different dodge dealers here in the central new york area <high road salt useage>. This is a common complaint. Also each of these dealers stock a replacement pump or repair kit for this problem. This tells me that this is a known problem are for this part of the northeast.

Very unhappy with chrysler and their willingness to fix problems transmission is very expensive and they refuse to do more than offer $300 toward their repairing it. We made many complaints to them if you check this site check other years of same model they have done nothing to fix this problem.

Abs lights come on/ steering: power assist stopped working .dealer says not part of recall2-fuel injector rail leaking all over engine.

Daimlerchrysler on 9/12/01 told me this defect under nhtsa campaign number 00v268000 would not be covered for my model since it was a 1993 model year. The problem is still the same and perhaps the campaign should cover all model years to protect public safety.

Plz review this information carefuly friends who have same vehicle have had all the same problems

I purchased a 93 dodge grand caravan in 8/05. On 8/29 i had to evacuate katrina (biloxi,ms) to nc.i parked the van and went to work on norweigan cruiseline in hawaii. I returned to nc last week. Upon starting the van today, gasoline was leaking out onto the manifold from the fuel rail o ring. I called dodge about a recall and was told if it was a 1996 they would fix it, but even with the threat of a engine fire if driven, they wouldnt help me. I am waiting (like many others) for fema $ and now have no vehicle to drive.i feel this is a manufacturer problem, therefore why i am submitting a complaint. Do i have any rights over this?????

The car had a strong odor of gas after i started it. I opened the hood and saw gas all over the valve covers and it was coming from both ends of the fuel rail crossover tube. I was very lucky it didn't start a fire and burn my house down since there was fuel all over the exhaust manifolds and wiring. I have gone to the dealer to order a new part. This seams like a serious safety issue that can have deadly results.

Gas door does not open.

Gas tank door molding out of adjustment causing fastner failure.

Driver's side door welds started to break. Doorwas sagging. Spot welds breaking. A month later, the passenger side door had the same problem. Both doors failed to latch properly due to the sagging. Had taken to dealer & mechanic could only reweldand realign the door hinges.

Side door does not unlock.

When opening the sliding door which does not stay open and closes immediately, may cause injuries to occupant entering or exitingvehicle.

Driver's side door opened due to failure of ther hinge and latch, repair work (welding failed) and door needed replacement.

Sliding door will intermittently not close all the way. When this happens consumer is not able to open door from the inside.

The rear liftgate right strut/support broke the bolt holding it.

This complaint is in reference to nhtsa recall, campaaign id number: 99v213000.on 2/12/05, the liftgate bolts on my 1993 dodge grand caravan failed suddenly.the dodge dealer would not honor the recall and repair the problem.instead, i was charged $201.18 for the repair.i think that the daimerchrysler corporation should honor their responsibility to repair the problem as stipulated in the recall notice.

The liftgate fell down on the onwer's back becausea boltthat holds the liftgate up broke.

Tail gate opens on its own without use of the remote control.

Speedometer not accurate.

The first transmission failure occurred at 56,000miles and was replaced by chrysler. The second transmission failure occurred at 119,609 miles and chrysler refuses to accept any responsibility towards its replacement.

My original transmission failed at approx. 56,000 miles and was replaced by dodge.the replacement transmission failed at approx. 112,000 miles and dodge refused to offer any financial help.i'm a loyal dodge owner.i currently own 3 dodge vehicles.however, this fact had no impact on dodge or their willingness to offer any help towards the replacement of the third transmission.a review of other complaints to nhtsa reveals a similar pattern of transmission failures and response from dodge for help.

Consumer states that intermittently when the brakes are appliedthe pedal becomes very hard , resulting in extended stopping distance. Owner received a recall notice on the abs system. The vehicle was repaired under recall # 685.. Owner is experiencing the same problems . In addition, van has continuing transmission problems. Manufacturer rebuilt transmission twice, but will not replace it.

Ongoing problem with transmission failure from 120,000 to the present of 135,000 miles.replacements were done on four occasionstwo by independent repair shops, and two by dealers. Provide further details.

Transmission bangs into gear.

Transmission will not downshift properly or will not engage inreverse gear.

The abs brakes in1993 van failed and i was able to stop before i ran the light, a few days later they came back on out of nowhere. Transmission failure possibly due topistons within the transmission that were manufactured rough, and put teflonon it. When it wore out it caused piston to break off.common problem with caravans.*ml

Transmission failure. Currently awaiting arbitration.

Transmission assembly leaking

Daimler/chrysler was notified of the problem with the transmission and are currently aware of the ongoing problem with the transmission known as a-604.they are, however, unwilling to take care of this matter since the warranty has conveniently expired.

While driving the transmission shifted itself into neutral until the speed decreased and then it automatically defaulted into 2nd gear.*nlm

My transmission started acting up at 60000mi and we had a repair done at that time, but i feel that this is pitiful to have to replace a transmission on a vehicle with less than 70000 miles on it.

Faulty transmission, trans fails to shift and fails to go into gear

Transmission was serviced shortley after purchase for rough shifting.transmission serviced again and transmission kit put on after 3 years.just notified that transmission needed to be completely rebuilt. Finding mechanics will not work on this transmission because of poor reputation of dodge transmissions.i am very frustrated that dodge doesn't repair this problem.

Reported paint delamination to reseda dodge 08/10/2001. No safety defect.

Noticed on-line that many people are having problems with dodge caravan transmissions around 70,000 miles. Thought this was a bit odd. Anyway, i hope this helps in some way. Thanks and keep up the great work.

This is the second replacement transmission installed in this vehicle. I am the original owner and have followed the maintanence schedule.these transmission failures are going to cause a severe rear end type accident soon if chrysler is not held responsible for a defective product.

Transmission failed two times in 7 years, first time it was under warranty and dealer took responsibility. Currently, dealer statesit's out of their hands.

Transmission will not engage in any selection in cold weather.i began to encounter this problem the first winter i owned it, it was out of warranty.last week the transmission failed.there was a loud banging noise. The trans. Will not engage.if the engine is running you cannot move the vehicle even in neuteral.if the engine is not runnning the vehicle can be moved.mechanic says there is a transmission problem, however at this time the nature is unknown.

Transmission failed due to internal components being burned and electrical components partially melted.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Transmission failed while climbing a hill - would not engage. Repair shop said transmission had to be replaced. Cost - $2020.00

Transimission does not shft into gear properly.dealer has inspectedvehicle, and manufacturer notifed.

Transmission failed.

My transmision failed while my 16 year old son was driving my car(learners permit). The car just "died" in the middle of the street in traffic; the car moved neither forward nor backward even though the engine continued to run.the only way i could get the car safely to the side of the road was to turn the car off completely and restart the car repeatedly, the car moving only a slight distance before failing again. This is my second transmission as i was forced to replace the original on 12/12/95 at 44,660 miles when it failed.i was told by central dodge in canton, ma that chrysler was aware of transmission problems with the 1993 caravans and would replace my transmission. It was covered under my 7/70 extended warranty service contract however.i was told that all previous problems with the earlier transmissions had been corrected. This 2nd transmission has now failed 3,184 miles earlier than the first, after only 41,476 miles (car mileage 86,136)! i purchased my car at norwood dodge. Both norwood dodge and chrysler in detroit refused to financially cover the replacement costs for a new transmission. (7/70 contract had expired by miles, not time).i am outraged that i am now forced to install a third transmission in the same car.a local dodge dealer, motorquest dodge in wellesley, has agreed to cover all but $600 of the cost of installing the third transmission as customer "goodwill".i strongly feel that these transmissions are defective; chrysler should be forced to recall these defective cars immediately- and be held liable for the severe injuries or (possiblly) deaths that could easily occur. We (or others) could have been killed if driving on a busy highway at high speeds. Chrysler knows about these defective transmissions and is placing their profits above the safety and well being of their vehicles owners and their families! i believe this is criminal negligence!thank you!

Transmission problem was potentially life threatening-we were lucky!!!

Transmission fails intermittently.

This submittal is that transmission replaced under warranty has now failed for the 2nd time. What is my recourse?

Transmission failed.

Transmission gives a strong vibration while driving at 35mph. Consumer only has 26,000 miles on the vehicle . Dealer has been contacted.

Before i bought this chrysler product the 2nd transmission had already been installed on june 16th of 1997 just 14 days before we took ownership of the car. The 3rd transmission was installed on may 26th, 1999. The date is june 17th, 2002 and i currently have the vehicle at the dealership and they tell me it needs another transmission. This last time was very dangerous. I had my wife and four children in the car and we were going 60 miles per hour on a busy highway when the transmission failed. A car behind us barely missed hitting us. I don't understand chryslers refusal to recognize the problems with their transmissions. Are they waiting until someone gets killed, just like the faulty tires on ford vehicles. The current dealership, laflam in runnemede, new jersey, refuses to even address fixing the transmission because the vehicle is too old. I would think after three bad transmissions they should install the fourth transmission out of their pockets as a good faith gesture. American made cars?????

Anti-locking braking system failure.automatic transmission also shifts erratically and downshifts prematurely when slowing down.

Tensioner pulley for serpentine belt sheared off engine, causing complete loss of steering control. My rear left axle keeps burning up bearings and the wheel either falls off or i catch it in time to correct it.at about $250.00 a pop (this is the fourth time) it's getting a little expensive.not to mention the law of averages is turning against me.sooner or later there is going to be an accident.

While drving on the interstate the differential unit failed.vehicle is in the process of being fixed.

The little hook comes undone sometimes when buckled in.when turning around in the seat belt on the second row on the right, the hook comes undone from the anchor.please describe details.

Driver's lap belt will not latch into buckle. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.

False latching occurred when the plastic housing aroundthe receptical was displaced downward, allowing buckle to enter the space between plastic housing and the latch, rather the latch itself.

Middle seat belt occasionally unlatches, and it is hard to reposition seat belt. Owner insisted upon replacing entire seat belt for $ 200.

Passenger's seat belt gets stuck, works rarely, dealer told consumerto lubricate it. This started in 1994 while still under warranty, not repaired.

Owner states that his seat belts do not retract and that this occurs in the front.owner has taken vehicle to numerous dealers and they have not corrected problem.

Driver side seat belt will jam up and not allow movement. Many times it takes 5 min to fight the seatbelt just to get it to pull out so that it may be put on. Once i get it on, there is no guarantee that i will be able to move as much as to roll down the window to pay tolls ect. It tightens up as i drive and there have many times while driving i have had to take it off because it becomes to tight. My dodge caravan has a lifetime warranty due to a recall on the abs brake system that was originally installed. Turns out the original owners brought the van in for this recall, but the part was not replaced. So years later it gave out. The van has 36k miles, so if it was replaced when the previous owners brought it in everything would be fine. (the previous owners were older and disabled, so i dont think they realized nothing was done) anyways, dodge is refusing to fix the abs system, and tell me they don't have a diagnosis tool, so they cant fix it. My mechanic was able to idwhat was wrong, but was unable to order a part due to this lifetime recall. They are also saying they cant locate the parts in the system, but i find that hard to believe. What they offer me was a made up amount of what they think my van is worth (they said kelley blue book value in fair condition, which is not correct i come up with over twice that amount on kbb.com and my van is in very good condition and is a mobility modified van, meaning it has a handicap ramp, built in tracks for tie downs, and is dropped6-8 inches, with air lifts.). Which is 1/3 of what i can sell it for on craigslist, and 1/2 of what i paid with my recent parts i put in to make it like new.so here's my question, what does lifetime warranty mean on a recall? do they have to fix it? or am i stuck with what ever they want to do? please advise. This was an important vehicle, as it was to be used to move a handicap person around.

On 5/23/01, i had just gotten off the highway.i was at a stop and the tire (l/front) went flat.i took it back to big o and it was replaced for free because it seperated. I asked about the front/r tire which was purchased at the same time and i was told that the warranty had expired. On 6/16/01, the front/r tire seperated while driving on the highway with my kids in the car.again, the tire was taken back to bigo and it was replaced for free stating seperation.my complaint is, when the first tire seperated and i asked about the other tire, it wasn't replaced.these are the only big o tires on my van.they separated within 2 weeks of each other, one while driving on the highway at 65 mph.the second tire should have been replaced at the same time as the first.are these tires safe?both were purchased at the same time and both seperated close to each other.i would like to know if you have other complaints regarding these tires.i am nervous driving with these tires and would like very much to hear from you.thank you for your help. This vehicle has a documented paint chipping off problem.the paint is chipping off the vehicle driver's side.the previous owner told me that the paint has been chipping off when he bought it new.the passanger side has been repainted by the previous owner with chrysler/dodge's knowledge.i have contacted the chrysler/dodge dealership and chrysler/dodge customer service, they know that it is a problem and has offered to pay 50% of the cost of repainting the driver's side.i believe that this is a manufacturing defect and they chrysler/dodge should pay for the total repair cost.the chrysler/dodge dealer and chrysler/dodge customer service will not allow me to talk to anyone about this problem.they are saying take it or leave it.i feel wronged from the chrysler/dodge dealership and i would like to resolve this problem.thank you if you can help me.

Recall repairs too timely.

I purchased my dodge grand caravan from the previous owner in 1998. At the time no paint problem were present. Then gradually the roof starting peeling and becoming rusty, now the hood is doing the same thing.i called crysler and asked if the paint was recalled. They said no. They said they could not repaint the roof or any part of it because it was past the one year warranty on the paint.

I was unsure about this being a saftey issue but i was told that if windsheilds were attached to peeling paint that it could pose a problem. I trust that you will be able to decide if this is a problem. Thank you for your time. No safety defect mentioned.

Paint is flaking from hood and roof, particles can be ingested.district manager said uv stabilizers in paint not correct.paint is flaking from rain gutters, roof ridges, and hood. No safety defect listed in the summary.

I was told to report this paint problem because windows should not be glued to peeling paint. No safety defect.
