I have a 1992 dodge grand caravan mini van. Front wheel drive with a 3.3 engine. Every time the serpentine belt gets the slightest amount of moisture on it...it comes off! at least once a month which requires paying a pro to reinstall it. The biggest problem is that one loses all power steering not mention all functions controlled by the belt! the last time this happened to me was in rain on a busy two lane highway and i almost flipped the van! it happens without warning and with immediateloss of power steering. I have relocated the tensioner and pulley assembly with no satisfaction. The problem is that chrysler designed these mini vans with no shields installed to turn moisture from the entire pulley system (top or bottom) and the pulleys have no 'lip' to hold the belt in place allowing it to slide off when wet! is there no way chrysler can be forced to install an oem product or shield to prevent this and save lives? this is a very common problem in all chrysler mini vans from apprx. 1992-2007.
Vehicle is experiencing a "hard brake pedal condition" where excessive force has to be applied to brake pedal in order to activatebrake system.also, abs light on the instrument panel is illuminated. The belt on the engine broke and the power brakes/power steering and the belt.
The belt comes off while driving in wet weather. Water less than 1/8 inch deep can result from splash of passing vehicle. This has occurred more than 20 times, and dealer repairs attempted 3 times. It occurs so ofter that i have become proficient in replacing the belt. Luckily no one has been injured thus far. My wife and three sons were very nearly in collision with a tractor trailer on the interstate(64) when the belt came off causing her to loose power steering, power brakes, climate control, and eventually all electrical power. Since then, she is terrified of driving the van when rain is forcasted.

Our van started showing holes in the paint in 1993 (very small on the hood).we tried to fix the problems with the touch up paint provided.this did not work.the paint started bubbling up and "popping".each time it did that a hole would appear that got bigger and bigger.we later noticed the roof doing the same thing.every time we washed the vehicle (gently) more paint came off.every time we brought the car in for servicing (at dealers in richardson, tx and plano tx dealers we mentioned to the service managers the problem and asked if any other vehicles were having the same paint problems they indicated they had never heard nor seen any ofher vehicles with the same problems.they always indicated it was our problem.we asked how much it would cost to re-paint the van and were told that it would cost $2,000 or so dollars.they always indicated that it was our problem and no one else had had the problem.i have come to find out that this is a common problem with vehicles between 89-94 and that the paint/primer bond was the problem not potential customer neglect.our van statred rusting so we went to several paint places to get estimates for re-painting.we are now having the van re-painted for approx. $800.(not $2,000 as the dealer would have charged.) this should not be a "customer" problem.the paint peels off, goes into sewers/ground and pollutes.the rust weakens the structures of the vehicles and makes them less safe.fyii notice loads of vehicles in the same years with the "same" problems. The jack stand bent when we were changing a time.the bottom just bent to the side.luckly no one was hurt as the tire was still attached when it bent.
Passenger side door pistol pump had broken off.
My wife, terrie was driving eb on a local interstate at 65 mph when the spare tire fell onto the roadway from the bottom of the van. The spare was attached to the bottom rear of the van. She did not hit any bumps or debri on the roadway. Upon examination of the device that held the spare, it was revealed that the cable that held the spare, was frayed and broken. Luckily no one was traveling immediately behind her, or the tire may have "crashed" into their vehicle or oncoming traffic on the opposite side of the interstate.

On at least five occasions while driving onhighwayvehiclestalled.once vehicle came to a complete stop it could be restarted.manufacturer anddealer have been informed of the problem.
Fuel pump malfunctioned.
Van will stall without any warning while driving at any speeds.cause of stalling is still unknown at this time.please describe details.
Fuel rail pipe that joins fuel injectors to both sides of the engine started spraying fuel on valve covers. Used parts dealers in the phoenix area tell me they receive 3-4 calls per week for this part. It is available new from the dealer only at a cost of approximately $500 with all seals. Since so many caravan owners seem to be experiencing this problem, the nhtsa should launch an investigation into this potentially explosive problem.

Owner is seeking information on tranmission failures for his vehicle.
Overdrive "o" ring breaks, causes vehicle to go into limp mode.replaced transmission at 85000, current transmission is going out at 110000 miles (25000 current miles on transmission)- same cause
Transmission locked in low gear 1/7/96 (34440 miles), rebuilt by chrysler under warranty; transmission banged hard on highway (lost reverse, had low gear only and had clanging while driving to dealer) on 12/13/99 (71899 miles), chrysler replaced transmission and torque converter, i had to pay half; locked in low gear 9/7/00 (79419 miles) dealer service said it was a wiring problem with transmission input sensor and i paid to fix it. Transmission now frequently makes squeaky noises when shifting, sometimes feels like something under car is slamming forward when starting to accelerate and makes little bangs/bumps when coasting like there is a bump on the road and there isn't any bump.
Transmission failure.
When the vehicle is process of driving it surges. Likewise,it isslipping out of gear, andgears are stuck.
Original transmission failed when vehicle was parked and would not go into gear.the 2nd failed while driving, went from 35 to 15 and rpm went from 2 to 5.had to be coaxed to the nearest parking lot. The 3rd, at 113,500, is presently not shifting properly, bucking, and cutting out while driving, although not all the time.have been told there is nothing wrong with the 3rd.
Brakes are now intermittent. Warning lights come on, then go out, then repeat the sequence. During the problem a high pedal pressure is required to acheive braking.
The original transmission dropped into low gear while driving at approximately 30 mph and would not shift again.at the time, the vehicle had 62500 miles on it.the transmission repair facility diagnosed complete transmission failure and ordered an entire new transmission installed ($1550.00).the new transmission was an original equiment replacement from dodge and was warranteed for 12 months / 12000 miles.35000 miles later (vehicle reading 98000 miles) the transmission has failed again and requires a replacement.

Transmissionhas been replaced three times.transmission jerks andhesitates when changing gears. Will drop into first gear when traveling onhighway.please provide any additional information/attachments.
Automatic transmission failure.
The transmission makes a winning noise whendriving and in reverse. Transmission somethimes will not move.the lever to move the transmission gets stuck and you have to force it in gear or to place it back into park.it seems that sometimes the engine seems to lose its will to go.it will go very slow or you have to floor it to go.when going up a very small hill you will have a sever decrease in power.you will go down to about 20 mph.

Automatic transmission failure.
Transmission failed twice.
This is the second transmission first at 48,600 miles (they would not replace it because 48000 mile warranty)now at 129.999 miles.
Transmission failed 4 times.
Vehicle now on third transmission.the 604 overdrive transmission evidently has a maximum life of about 70,000 miles, if that much.the 604 is prone to fail at any time.chrysler/dodge knows this.the dealers know this.the repair shops know this.the nhtsa should know this.our bank account certainly does. The transmission is defective.it is not necessarily a safety defect although a complete failure of a transmission when none shouldreasonably be expected could lead to loss of life and/or property.you should have seen us try to get out of the way on the highway when our transmission failed.in this respect, we were lucky.

While driving on highway with cruise control on transmition sliped cousing vehicle to lose speed and come to a stop.

Driver'a air bag failed to deploy, andseat belt retractorfailed to catch.consumers head hitwindshield, knocking out twoteeth, andarms were injured.the vehicle has not been examined to determine cause ofproblem.please provide any additional information / documentation.
Seat belt clipat bottom of captain's chairbroke.
The spring clip is breaking and slipping loose. Deqler refuses to do anything because the vehicle is too old. The spring clip on the right rear shoulder belt snapped off at its end when the driver was clipping it in place.
Rear middle seat belt separates from floor frquently without warning.
The driver's side seat mount broke in two places. This causes the driver to be dumped forward into the steering column. The bottom point of the seat belt is also fastened to the mounting tower thus it will not restrain the driver from being propelled forward. The person who welded these breaks stated that he had done this to several of these vehicles. The break was, in actuality, a stress fracture at two points where the tower is bolted to the vehicle floor. Welds did not entirely ho;d and had to be re-welded. Replacing the tower with a new, unstressed design would have been the best solution but chrysler would not do this. They did however pay for the welding!
Harness straps on theintegrated childsafety seat no longer function. The locking mechanism no longer locks theharness straps in place. The problem has been reported to the dealership. Parts are not available to correct the problem with the seat. The bench seat will have to be replaced to correct the problem. Please provide any further details.
My husband was rear-ended by a car at approximately 30mph in our 1992 dodge grand caravan.the back of the drivers seat collapsed.fortunately he was not hurt, but he could easily have lost control of the vehicle.also, if our 8 year old child had been with him, she would have been riding in the seat directly behind the driver and could have been severly injured.
The 2nd & 3rd row seats are self releasing.seats would pivot forward. When latched or lockedwould release the entire seat. This would cause the seat to be unstable & the occupants shifting around.
While sitting in the driver's seat seatback snapped and then collapsed onto the rear seat.this happened while i was simply reaching into my front pocket for my keys.i was not injured and feel very fortunate that my children were not in the back seat at the time the seat failed.i went to white bear dodge and talked to the service manager.he said that chrysler does not supply parts for seats, and that a new seat would not be available for my vehicle.i believe that this is a safety related defect that the manufacturer must fix, and i need to know how to proceed.
Red release button on seat belt replaced twice.
While stopping, vehicle was rearended by truck, hit guardrail, front occupants forced forward/backward, both front seats snapped like twigs, seatbacks collapsed completely, fell backwards with occupants, also no deployment of driver's air bag.
Abs brake actuator motor failure. For the third time the abs motor has failed.chrysler claims the part is no longer serviced and will not honor the lifetime warrantee 96v099000.the part is available in the aftermarket for about $350.00 after a number of calls to fiat chrysler they would only offer to buy the vehicle from me for $300.00 which is the lowest value to be had by kbb.
Paid dealership $600.00 to repair.the brake lights keep coming on and sticking.my wife has taken it back 4 times and on october 11 will have to take it back again.i discussed this situation with mike anderson on 10/9, customer satisfaction representative for dealership.i tried to explain to him that having brake lights sticking in the on position is a safety hazard.he was extremely rude to me on the telephone.he said that as long as the brakes stop the van i don't have a safety problem.i am afraid to drive the van in its current situation, it would have been great if the dealership would have provided us with a rental car for the weekend.i also searched the website of daimlerchrysler before i filled out this form.i could not find anywhere that i could send daimlerchrysler an e-mail about my concerns.i was wondering if other owners of such minivans have reported similar problems.thank you!

While driving when attempting to stop the vehicle excessive force had to be applied to the brake pedal to depress the brakes.vehicle failed to stop, causing extended stopping distance.emergency brakes had to be depressed to stop the vehicle.the cause of the failure is undetermined. In 1997 consumer was driving and lost brake power. Abs piston was replaced per the recall # 96v099000 subject: brakes: hydraulic: anti-skid system.on 7/9/2003 the consumer was driving and lost brake power again.the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that piston on the vehicle was the same piston that was recalled, which had a lifetime warranty.the dealer will not replace the piston because the warranty stated that piston will only be replaced if frozen.
Abs recalled but abs continues to fail despite replaced controller module x2, primary and secondary switches. Upon braking the pedal virbrates followed by abs & brake warning light turn on. Also rear brake lights stay on intermittently after released brake pedal or engage the parking brake ( dealer found no defect on numerous occasion )
Purchased van 1998; 1st failure feb. 26, 1998 abs brake failure;mileage 65,928; replaced pump and motor assembly;2nd brake failure july 1998; mileage 75,991; replaced accurator piston and piston package; 3rd brake failure may 25, 1999; mileage 87,880; replaced module abs control asssembly, module ecu; 4th brake failure sept 23, 2000 and no repair so far due to beyond 100,000 mile extended hidden factory warranty and no confidence in it being effectively repaired.
Complete failure of braking occurred w/o warning. Second failure since owning car. First failure had no warning lights, but braking took approx. 100 ft. To stop car from 25 mph. Latest failure occurred 425 miles from home in parkersburg, wva. Rented a car to return to richmond. Took local dealer 14 days to get parts from chrysler. Returned rental car to parkersburg on dec. 3, 1998 and drove van back to richmond. Chrysler reimbursed us for rental expenses and towing. Requested that chrysler remove anti-lock braking and install standard braking, but they refused. Talked to several mechanics and all confirmed my opinion that this particular system used by chrysler in '91, '92, & '93 is flawed in design and it will only be a matter of time before i or a member of my family will be faced with complete brake failure again. The next time we may not be so lucky! i feel that i cannot expose my family to this danger any longer, & therefore must dispose of this van. Since the nhtsa is obviously aware of the number of complaints and the safety impact of brake failure, i do not understand why there has not been a complete recall on all chrysler cars equipped with this system. Your comments would be appreciated. You may contact me at any time to discuss the matter further. Regards, r. C. Poage, jr.
Dt*:the contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, extreme pressure on the brake pedal was needed to stop the vehicle.there was no warning prior to the incident that the brakes were faulty.the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the dealer determined that the hydraulic control unit failed.the vehicle was not repaired due to the unavailability of parts.there is a nhtsa recall # 96v099000 which pertains to the antilock brakes.the vehicle was repaired by the previous owner based on the recall, but the problem re-occurred.

No repairs have been made.
On 12/27/98 my anti-lock light and brake light remained on. Brakes had minimal power and stopping. No dealers open on sunday. Monday went to nearest service center, firestone mastercare, 1/2 mile from hotel in palm harbor, fl. After diagnostics of abs failure, firestone contacted several dealers for the parts. No dealer would release the parts to a 'reseller'. Nearest part could be shipped from atlanta. I agreed to overnight shipping. Next day, no part. Chrysler would not ship to a 'reseller'. Only an authorized dealer can make the repair. I was headed back home to atlanta, so i drove without the abs and only minimum braking. On 12/31/98 took van to dealer. On 1/4/99 dealer ordered parts. By 1/8 no parts available. Parts finally at dealer on 1/14 or 15. Van fixed and returned. My concern is that 1) the parts for the brake recall #685 were not available to a reseller, and then not available for 2 weeks to the dealer. Then according to the dealer, my service record indicated that this recall was serviced on 08/11/97 and 12/17/97. I do not remember a problem with the brakes at either of those times, nor do i remember having the brakes fixed. However, if the abs was fixed, it has now failed for a 2nd time!!

In january 1997 i received recall 685 from chrysler saying brake failure may occur and a substantial increse in brake pedal force is needed to stop the vehicle. About 6 months after i purchase this van the paint began to chip.the warranty info said it was not covered.the chrystler people say it is not there problem.the paint obviously is defective.it just contiues to peel off in chunks.since i have owned the van the transmission has been replaced, the started replaced, the engine replaced, the radio replaced, and speaker stopped working.not to mention numerous recalls.i had heard there might be a recall on defective paint andi am just trying all my options.

I concerned about a problem with the rear window on my mini-van. Please let me know if there is or will be a recall to fix a problem with the rear window seal of the hatch for the 1992 dodge grand caravans. The seal is loose and can cause the rear window to fall out... If the window does fall out, this could seriously injure someone, especially a child. Even worse, this window could fall out on the highway and cause serious and fatal accidents. I believe that this is a serious matter and a recall should be sent out to have the rear windows resealed before people are seriously injured and/or killed. This matter is far more serious than the recall recently sent out by daimlerchrysler about a wiper motor (#836).thank you.
