Airbag light is on. I took it to a dodge dealer to check it out. They said that the left side impact airbag control module is bad and maybe the airbag, also the airbag module itself may be bad. Said that it is not covered under warranty since it is electrical. I thought when it came to safety issue such as airbags, that it was a federal law that those items are fixed for free.

Consumer states of been in a collision on sunday and air bags did not deployed.dealer was contacted.mr

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The air bag light and the check engine remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the air bag failure. The dealers diagnosislocated the failure to the air bag sensor electrical wires. No codes were displayed regarding the check engine light. The vehicle was taken to a tire garage, because the front tires felt unstable while driving. The tire mechanic stated the front hub cap caused the vehicle to feel unstable while driving. The vehicle wasn't repaired. The manufacturer will be contacted. The failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 73,000.

I was driving my 2002 dodge durango when i struck the rear of another vehicle who was sitting in my lane ( a non-turning lane) neither driver or passenger airbag deployed.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked it rolled away and crashed into the sidewalk. The driver and passenger air bags deployed. The vehicle was driven to a local mechanic. The vehicle was examined by an engineer who was unable to diagnose a failure code, or recreate the reason why the vehicle rolled out of the park position. The vin was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 141,000.

Airbag light comes on and stays on.

Air bag light goes off and on with warning sound.

I was involved in an accident where i hit the vehicle in front of me travwlling appx 45-50 miles an hour. Air bags did not deploy.

The contact owns 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that after being in a crash at 80 mph, the airbags did not deploy until after the vehicle rolled over. A police report was filed and the vehiclewas destroyed. There was one injury and two fatalities as a result of the crash. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000. The vin was not available.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision of 35-40 mph. Upon impact, neither air bag deployed. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Air bags did not deploy.

I was driving on the freeway at 55 mph, 6 car lengths behind a vehicle. The vehicle in front of me stopped abruptly (a disable vehicle was in the lane) and when i slammed on the brakes, the vehicle kept rolling as if no brakes were applied. My foot went all the way to the floor. There were no vibrations from the abs as well as no lowering of the front end, typical from braking. I ended up colliding into the vehicle at about 30 mph and the air bags did not deploy. I had previously complained several times to my dealer that the brakes were faulty in a panic situation. I complained shortly after purchasing the vehicle and up until a year ago. In all instances, i was advised that there was nothing wrong with my brakes as no code was detected.

While driving at 40 mphconsumer ran into an animal head-on and none of the front air bags deployed. Vehicle was totaled. Contacted dealer, anddealer was not willing to do anything.

While driving at25 mph consumer's vehicle was involved in a collision, hitting another vehicle. Upon impact, the air bags failed to deploy. Vehicle was towed to a collision center.

While stopped in traffic the consumer's vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle.the consumer's vehicle collided with the vehicle in front of it.upon impact, air bags did not deploy.consumer was wearing a seat belt but still suffered injuries to the right knee. A police officer arrived on the scene. Also, nhtsa pe 03-032, front suspension upper ball joint failure: while vehicle was getting repaired mechanic found that upper ball joints were wearing out at an alarming rate.

Dt: the consumer was involved in a frontal accident.upon impact, the front airbags did not deploy.the consumer sustained injuries.a police report was takenat the scene.there had not been any previous problems with the airbags to indicate a failure.no repairs could be performed because the vehicle was totaled.updated 12/14/05.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving 15 mph, the doors independently locked and unlocked continuously without warning. As a result, the battery became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the central timing module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,998.

Headlights flicking on and off as well as the interior lights. Cannot drive at night.

It started with a soft bell sound (e.g.like when you open a door), doors locking and unlocking, small light on the 4 x 4 knob going off and on, console light turning on and off and the 4 x 4 system was not working. All issues started a couple of months prior to 1/7/14. It was worked on by dodge of woodbury, nj during the 1/7/14 week. Now, (5/12/15) there is a bell sound again on and off. Not sure if the 4 x 4 is working since i've had no need to use it. However, this is an electrical issue that is not going away fully!

Truck quit running and was intermittent at highway speed and then quit for 10-15 minutes.

Electrical system failures have resulted in turn signals not working on four different occasions over the course of 5 years. The wiring harness under dash has been repaired under warranty, replaced not under warranty, and repaired again not under warranty. 4th failure has not yet been addressed. Right turn signal does not function. Flasher, bulbs and fuses are working. Over $1,600 invested in turn signal problems.

For a 2002 dodge durango, the power door locks kept locking and unlocking the doors by themselves and kept repeating the process every ten or twenty seconds while operating the vehicle.even when the one hour car ride was finished and the key removed, the power door locks continued to lock and unlock the doors making it impossible to lock the car for the night.the batteries from the remote access devices were removed, but did not solve the problem.even one day later, the door locks continue to intermittently lock and unlock the door. *nlm

--- please---nhtsa needs to expand recall notification to cover more vehicles. I have 2 durangos, both have same problem described in recall notification # 69542. Dodge customer care hotline claims both of my vehicles (vin [xxx] and [xxx]) are not covered by this recall.both of my vehicles exhibit same conditions described in recall notification.recall id # 69542 - power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift-- recall date: dec 04, 2007-- model affected: 2002 dodge durangosummary: vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, the ignition/park shift interlock system may become inoperative. This can allow the shifter to be moved out of the "park" position with the ignition key removed (or in the "lock" position). This can also allow the ignition key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the "park" position. Consequences:either of these conditions could allow the vehicle to roll away causing a crash without warning. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Beginning october of 2010 my heater went out in my 2002 dodge durango. We replaced the wiring harness, the resister, and the blower motor. The connection between the resister and the wiring harness, continues to melt the first two prongs. In result the heater slowly goes out one setting at a time, as well as no heat, just cool air blows in the rear.after replacing all three parts it works for about a month before everything starts to fry again. After spending a $100.00/mo for replacement parts and the expense of service, i'm extremely frustrated and broke. After much research on the internet i come to find that i am not the only one with this complaint. Going without a heater or defrost in the middle of winter in minnesota is not an option, especially with little children and it goes out as your stopped at a light and your window fogs up and can't see a thing. I hope with much consideration that this matter could be attended too.

I have a 2002 dodge durango, have replaced blower motor and several resistors. Two of the wires between the resistor and the blower keep melting. I have replaced the connector and the harness also because they got so hot they melted together. Smoke has rolled out of the dash because of this problem. I checked online and this is a common problem, and seems it is happening to alot of people. Why is this issue not a recall? it is very scary when this happens and it is not safe.

Problem 1. When engine is warm the instrument cluster starts flashing on and off, also all warning lights. If the engine is turned off a no bus shows in the odometer, vehicle will not start until the pcm feels cool to the touch. This problem occurs daily two or more timesproblem 2.the passenger seat belt unbuckles by itself. This occurs every daytw*

2002 dodge durangothe heater blower wires started to melt, the heater blower resistor failed and the plug between the wires and resistor melted together.this is the second time this has happened.first time the vehicle was in warranty and the dealer just replaced the resistor.i would have to look at my records but i believe it was around 58,000 miles on the vehicle.now the vehicle has 80,000 miles on it.at first it smelled like something was burying when the blower fan was on.the higher the setting the worst the smell became.i have replaced the resistor but left the melted plug and wires because the dealer wants $70.00 just for the parts.i am guessing i will have to replace the wires and plug the next time this happens.i believe i have already thrown out the part but i will check.the melted plug is on the vehicle.

I was in an accident because the 2002 dodge durango's brakes did not work and the abs and brake light came on. This was the scariest thing i have ever experienced. I have had it checked by auto zone, dodge dealer, local mechanic...and no answers. The brakes literally went to the floor. I have 3 children and have no other choice but to drive this death trap. I have also had problems with the ball joints/ electrical issues. I had the abs fuse pulled, but not sure if this is a solution. Has there been other complaints of brake failure in these vehicles.

This past week (march 1, 2009) as my family and i were driving towards our family vacation, my 2002 durango started to make some strange noises and actions.my wipers began to activate and would not stop, my panel lights flickered on/off making some clicking sounds.all this occurred while i was driving.when i got a chance, i turn off the car and restarted it.it stopped the wipers from being on but it also stopped my electric windows, exterior lights, interior lights, wipers, alarm and fab from working.the car would start, the turn signals would work but all previously mentioned items would not work.when i arrived to my destination, my friends and i looked and tested some fuses to no avail.the next day we continue to test fuses and modules and noticed that by tapping a module box next to the left driver doors and adjacent to the brake would make the interior lights on/off.i purchased the part called the 'time and theft modulepart no. 56049073ak.the part was ordered from the dealer, we replaced it and it seemed to have solved the problem.now the inconvenience was to have the key fab reprogrammed so that it can lock/unlock the doors and activate the security alarm.this was another cost that can only be done at the dealer.the purpose of this complaint is so that other dodge durango owners and the nhtsa can see if this should be a recall and find out if any other drivers have had similar problems.again, my concern is that lights went out, wipers intermittently on/off, etc.if at night, i assure you that my frustration would have been much higher.

Dodge durango just stops running at random times.this occurs at speeds of 10-60 mph or even when the car is being started.the odometer blinks and reads no bus.there are numerous reports of this on dodge internet forums.the powertrain control module and/or crankshaft sensors end up being replaced, but the problem is hard to diagnose and dangerous because it occurs without warning and while driving.with so many reports on 1999-2002 dodge durangos having this problem (search durango pcm "no bus") something must be defective.my durango began doing this about a month ago and the dealer doesn't see anything wrong.i was mildly injured during one of the failures, when my durango 'shut off' while i was coming down a highway ramp and i bumped my head against the driver side window while trying to stabilize the car, which suddenly and without warning had no powertrain control.

Problem started with the headlights flashing randomly, dash and interior lights flashing in sequence with headlights. Duration of lights being out increases the longer they are on. I was lucky i only had a few blocks to drive to get of the road. The next day the door locks, horn, and wipers stopped working also. Having headlights suddenly go out while driving could be a real safety issue.it appears the problem is the body module, which must be installed by a dealer and programmed.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving approximately 50 mph, the exterior lighting and instrument panel flickered. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 193,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that all of the vehicleinterior lights, the instrument panel lights, the windshield wipers and the power locks were not working. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the computer module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 107,305.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that while activating the low beam headlights, they began flickering along with the instrument panel and the interior lights. The vehicle was driven to a private mechanic where the failure could not be replicated. The manufacturer was not contacted in regard to the issue. The failure mileage was 79,410 and the current mileage was 79,466.

Intermittently the electronic system would cause the electrical system to come on or go out by it self (headlight power door locks, windshield wipers, headlights, etc) or cause the suv truck to stall completely. The truck hasbeen to the dealer. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.

Central timer module failed unexpectedly at night, causingheadlights, taillights, security indicator and horn to activate intermittently while driving.vehicle unsafe to operate in this condition.out of warranty, dealer charges $421.00 to fix.this follows several in-warranty electrical repairs - remote locking mechanism, rear axle speed sensor and powertrain control module.defect could easily cause a wreck and poses a safety hazard.

Dash and under neath and steering colunm and speed cluster caught fire today.truck was parked and running.

Oil pressure keeps changing when it shouldn't which is causing car to overheat.

My vin tag: (xxxx)i replaced blower motor, resistor, and plug multiple times on my 2002 dodge durango and it keeps melting/burning up. If i leave it on low or medium fan setting eventually it will catch fire, i'm finally coming to you to see if you can help. Owners of the 1998-2007 dodge durango's & dakota's all have this problem many will have fires due to it and it's just a matter of time before there is a fatality from it!i was driving home after snow plowing and needed to defrost my windows so i put it on medium and within 6 minutes smelled a strong burning smell. Go home and the wiring had melted the fan, plug and harness. I've changed this part now about 12 times in about a year, low & medium settings cause it so now i can only use high for any use unless i want another fire, 9th time it almost caught because it was dripping plastic about to catch when i sprayed water on it and pulled connection on battery. Mild to wild on rte-34 in orange, ct worked on it as well.redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Consumer stated that while driving she smelled an odor of burning rubber but didn't know that it was her vehicle.as soon as she put the turn signal on,all the dashboard lights started to blink. When the turn was complete she saw smoke coming from under the dashboard.the consumer managed to pull over into a mall parking lot and at that point thevehicle went up in flames. *nlm

The central timer module started malfunctioning for no apparent reason.headlights, parking lights, interior lights, windshield wipers, 4-wheel drive and other electric accessories stop working while driving vehicle.this happens with no warning.disconnecting battery fixes these problems temporarily, but ignition chime goes off continuously while driving until all of the above accessories stop working altogether.vehicle is past basic warranty, so dealer refuses to pay for the module.

- the contact stated that on 07/08/05the2002 dodge durango sport caught on fire in the middle of the night while parked in the garage.the fire was caused by the unused wire connector as mentioned in recallcampaign# 06v339000 which stated that on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with front bench seats only, if fluidwas spilled from the floor mounted cup holder an unused console power outlet connector located under the seat may become contaminated.the contactreceiveda recall letter in 11/06 for the same problem that caused the fire.the contactcalled the manufacturer ,and was told that she would have to go throughthe insuranceinsurance company for reimbursement because the vehicle was repaired by someone else other than a dodge dealership.the contact stated that the repairs done on the vehicle showed that the vehicle caught fire due to the wire connector.the contact felt that the manufacturer handled this matter unprofessional, and felt they should give her some type of reimbursement.the recall came too late, and the manufacturer should be responsible for the contacts loss.the consumer stated the point of origin of the fire seemed to have started at the plug for a power seat or heated seat.the contact has provided the invoice for the repairs and pictures of the fire. Update 4/25/07

Rear windshield wiper runs on and on and on....then shuts off, then will go on again even if you use fob to unlock doors!headlights now don't go on when desired, or will stay on even after you turn car off.found that others with this year & model durango have similar problems.issue is ctm (central timer module) which should be replaced and not by the consumer so very often - but could cause hazardous driving conditions if it goes when you need to use the lights.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning and failed to restart intermittently. The vehicle was towed to a repair facility that replaced the crank shaft sensor, cam shaft sensor, and the ignition switch. After the repairs, the vehicle failed to start. The independent mechanic was unable to get a diagnostic trouble code reading and indicated that the pcm or tipm may need to be replaced. The mechanic also indicated that the wiring harness may need to be replaced; however, the part was no longer in production for the year, make, and model vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was not available.

Exterior lights, interior lights, wipers, alarm and fab stopped working. The car would start, the turn signals would work. It just stopped working all of a sudden. Dealership found nothing wrong and said the computer had reset it self. Now it is doing it again. Has happened twice. Good thing it wasn't at night. Have to take it back in.

Electronic control module failure causing headlights to flicker on and off. Was advised by the dealer that total failure could result. Also advised that 700 of these items are currently on back order. I have been waiting since july for this part. It would seem to be a widespread issue.

While stopped at an intersection, the air conditioner/heater blower motor ceased to operate in all ranges even though the a/c was on and the compressor clutch was engaged.on inspection, it was observed that the first two pins of the resistor block were melted as was their corresponding sockets in the plug.further, the wiring at the plug was severely oxidized and the insulation was melted back.i replaced the plug assembly and resistor block.the resistor block had been replaced three years prior when the lowest blower setting ceased to operate.internet accounts occur frequently on this issue.this creates a cold weather hazard as the defroster will cease to operate creating a dangerous operating condition.total cost of repair materials was approximately $125.00.

1-electrical system on overhead digital compass system became very hot. This electrical component system did not work for a period of a few days.it has intermittently worked now.2-when you turn the steering wheel there is a horrible noise coming from one of the rear wheels. It makes a "woo-woo" sound every time the vehicle is turned, primarily turning right. A "honest" mechanic, who is a friend, told me that dodge (chrysler) was infamous for this type of wheel problem.3-the transmission seems to have a hard time shifting, which involves the above wheel problem.4-the air conditioning system does not cool and the vehicle is only 4 years old.5-the leather covered dash is peeling up and began last summer, when the vehicle was only 3 years old.contacted chrysler/dodge hq and dealership and both have refused to repair problem.

Electronic controls of safety equipment do not funtion properly. Turn signals, lights, cruise. Gauges, windows, radio, airbag etc.. All have malfuntioned since the car was picked up from the dealer. It is obvious that a electrical problem exists in the vehicle but doddge/chrysler is un willing to address the issue .this is an ongoing issue. I have numerous witnesses and have started video recording the problems.

Driving to school in the morning, all lights inside and out started flickering. Turned them off, but the headlights stayed on highbeams the whole time while still flickering. Alarm also stopped working. On the drive back the highbeams stayed on again the whole time even when its on off switch. Inside lights won"t stay on. When i turn the car on the darn lights will not turn off. Doing my research it seems that its the ctm, and alot of people have had that experience. I have 3 children, what if my lights flicker off again and cause an accident?

I was driving on rt 190 when my car stalled wouldn't start heavy traffic with children in vehicle

I have a 2002 dodge durango sport with 123k miles. I was driving 70 mph on the freeway, when my car completely shut down....i.e. Power steering, power brakes, everything. Due to the fact that i could hardly turn off the road i was nearly rear ended by an 18 wheeler. I had 2 small children in the vehicle with me, and it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I have read online thousands of people having the same issues, which are apparently the pcm is too close the engine which causes the vehicles instruments to shut down. I find this a major reason to investigate this issue. Does chrysler/dodge need a whole family to die in one of their vehicles before they decide to issue a recall?this is a very serious issue that the nhtsa needs to investigate before, if it hasn't happened yet, someone gets killed.

Resistor that controls heater blower speed failed numerous times.electrical connector that connects power to resistor also failed twice.when connector failed, evidence of significant electrical arcing between contacts and smoldering fire. Dealer service/parts claims problem mis due to original blower motor having excess current drain, so i replaced blower motor with new dealer part.problem re-occurred with melting of connector.five resistors and two connectors. High potential for under-dashboard fire at connection.

While driving with the cruise control set, and the rear passenger (electric) windowoperated the vehicle begins to shake.

When it is hot outside the 2002 dodge durango will not start. The vehicle will also lose power while driving down the road at 70 miles per hour, no brakes, and no steering. This also happens after the engine is hot. Some fuses on the drivers side dash compartment can be removed and put back in (same fuses, not blown) and the vehicle will start.

When driving, the steering wheel locks and the car dies. It has happen several times while i'm on the road. Replaced camshaft sensor but itis still dying. If you do a google search you will find that a lot of people are having the same issue. It is dangerous and my life and the life of others can be at risk.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact entered the vehicle and noticed that there was evidence of an electrical fire. There were no flames visible; however, excessive smoke emitted inside the vehicle. The headliner and front bench seat were burned. In addition, the floor mounted cup holder, heater, and air conditioner control devices melted. All the windows and the interior of the vehicle were covered with heavy soot. The contact mentioned that the wires coming from the connector harness were burnt. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 06v339000 (electrical system). The failure occurred prior to being serviced per the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The dealer and manufacturer declined to repair the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 236,000.

Ignition switch failed on 2002 durango after only 55,000 miles.stuck in lock position.not covered under warranty, dealer charged $400.00 to replace.

I had a 2002 dodge durango. I was driving it one day with my 2 young sons in it, and it caught on fire and nearly killed us all. It burned down to nothing. You can view pictures of it at w.bethelpark.com, go to the vol.fire dept photo gallery & look at pictures for aug. 4th 2003. Vehicle fire south hills village shopping mall, that is where i had to pull off the road. Dodge & chrysler did absolutley nothing for me. I just want people to be aware of this, because if there is a defect, my warranty didn't do anything which was suppose to cover bumper to bumper for 3 years 36,000 miles and i only had 11,000 miles on it. This vehicle had to have a short or a defect, cause everything was factory. There is nothing left to it, please view the pictures at the web site i told you.www.bethelpark.com.

2002 dodge durango.car engine "surges" when starting to drive, then returns to normal after a few hundred yards.occurs at speeds of 10-20 mph. Reported to dealer. Dealer unable to reproduce problem.occurs randomly, but about 1-2 a month. Car also stops and will not restart.recurs randomly and without warning.local mechanic feels problem could be powertrain control module related.occurs at speeds of 0-60 mph.

Vehicle stalls intermittently with out warning at any speed including in park and while idling. When this occurs power steering is lost, gauges freeze in last position, no check engine light. Vehicle starts right back up without hesitation. During my 7 minute drive to work it may still once or not at all up to 7 times. Vehicle is currently sitting at a dodge dealership garage where they are unable to diagnose it due to vehicle not giving and codes even with it stalling for them multiple times. I already replaced the crankshaft position sensor and it didn't fix the issue. My options are take my car back still stalling or replace the pcm $500-$900 which may not be the problem then i'm out the money. I guess fingers crossed since no one at this garage has ever seen a vehicle not throw a code with them witnessing the issue

The vehicle started to swerve into the other lane on the highway, and as i attempted to regain control with both hands firmly on the wheel, and gentle steering, i found i still had no absolutely no control with the steering, it was completely loose it was disconnected. At that same time, i went for my brakes, only to find they all of a sudden were not functioning either.the vehicle eventually swerved into the fence of to the side of the freeway, then the vehicle to flip two times.

When driving to the store i shut vehicle off and went in . When i came out i cranked it over and it startered and then caught on fire by firewall and was ingolfed in flames

Was driving down wayne road when suddenly my car started slowing down everything seem to be working except the gas paddle. I had my feet on gas but it was not responding i quickly pulled to the right as it was hard to turn steering wheel. It was cars behind me and it was scary knowing someone could hit me . I called my husband and he came thought he could just give me a jump but he said its nothing wrong with battery. It looks like im not getting any gas. It wont turn over so he pushed me in the mall. Until i get off from work. I was blessed that it happen to do that on the day he was off because i just started a new job and i didn't need to miss a day as soon as i start working. I also read many similar complaints on this is. This should be taken care of and fast. I thank the lord for watching over me in trial moments.

If you do a google search you will find that a lot of people are having the same issue. It is dangerous and my life and the life of others can be at risk.

While driving, no matter what speed the vehicle starts to sputter, loses power and will stall. I was low on gas, and took my car to a local gas station for fuel. After putting $10 in my car was running extremely rough. I was doing about 20 mph, when it just shut off. Brakes got real hard. After re starting the vehicle all seemed normal. Then, i drove about 3 car lengths and it did it again at a red light. I tried pushing the gas to see if that would do anything, it didnt. I drove all in , about 3 miles, and the car stalled 7 times. While in the drive through, it stalled 3 abd at one point jerked so far i thought i was going to hit the car in front of me. Vehicle speed does not matter , as it will slowly lose power and turn off. I was driving locally on a city street. My best guess to this problem would be something related to the evap system, quite possibly the purge valve but im not 100% sure but this situation is very unsafe, i have 2 small children and cannot drive this vehicle. During my trip the speed was between 20-45 mph

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact replaced the crankshaft position sensor, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 187,000.

A valve seat in my cylinder head came off during normal engine operation causing total engine destruction. The valve seat (made of steel) dislodged itself and destroyed the aluminum head and the piston in that cylinder. This is a factory default common in these engines. I was driving down a busy road when the valve locked up, lost compression, causing my brakes to go out and my engine to stall. I had to pull off the road to avoid the car stopping in front of me.. This is a documented failure on 1999-2002 chrysler- jeep 4.7l engines.

While driving a burning odor could be detected from inside the cabin. So i pulled over to check the engine andno immediate problem could be seen. After driving for two blocks i notice that the odor was getting stronger and smoke was coming from the engine. I pulled over once more open the hood. Upon further inspection i notice flame at the fire wall within seconds the whole engine covered in flames.

I was coming down a driveway from a store and i attempted to stop behind another vehicle when i applied my brakes and my durango lunged forward towards the other vehicle and it did it twice but the second time i had both my feet on the brakes and i hit the other vehicle.i have new tires and brakes and also the pavement was wet but it did not slide.it was like the accelerator stuck or something. My worry is that i could hit a pedestrian next time this happens.i had no damage to my durango but there was damage to the other vehicle. This is the first accident i've had in years and i had a good driving record until now.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle overheated while driving 30 mph.there was coolant leaking from the reservoir and the temperature erratically raced to hot. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where they replaced the thermostat and the radiator pressure cap.the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised that there were no recalls for the failure and offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 86,000.

2002 dodge durango has engine stalling problems. Starting having problems a few months after a bought it. (nov, 2002, 14,000 miles on it) it started out stalling when you would be driving and stop, say at a light. It would idiol real low and die. The first couple times this happend in a 3-4 month period i took it to the dealer. And the said they couldn't find anything wrong. Then in july 2003 i was driving home in the afternoon going about 40-45 mph and the durango just shut off on me. I ended up in a ditch with front end damage. Took it to dodge dealer told them what happened. Waited 6 weeks for a dodge rep. From detriotto come look at it. Only to have him say the same thing, can't find anything wrong with it. Well i ended up paying the deductable to get it fixed. Cont. To have problems off and on the next 6-8 months. Than on monday feb. 16. I was pulling out into traffic and got through 1 lane and it died and wouldn't restart the first couple of times. So i'm setting in the middle of the highway trying to start my durango.lucky people saw me enough to stop. Almost had another accident. Took it right to the dodge dealer and told them what happened, and to not call me untill it was fixed, and if you can't fix it then i will contact a lawyer and approach the lemon law. They have had it for 3 days no phone call. Luckly it is still under warranty but not for much longer. Can some one please help me.

I purchase the vehicle new in jan 2003.i first experienced the problem a few months later but it was very occasional and consequently couldn't be identified by the dealer.what happened was that (usually at highway speed), the engine would very briefly shut off and then resume normally.the best way i could describe it would be a slight 'stagger'.over the years the problem has become more and more frequent and now occurs at all speeds in all driving conditions regardless of load, temperature, weather, etc.it now occurs at least daily and sometimes several times in less than one minute.often the engine will die completely and needs to be restarted using the key.today, the engine died (completely) as i was pulling out of a parking spot and attempting to merge with oncoming traffic.it died (completely) again as i was going about 25 mph on city streets under light load.it died again (completely) as i was pulling into the parking lot of a business.during my commute to work it 'staggered' at highway speed at three separate times at highway speed while under moderate load.suffice to say this is quite dangerous as the power steering and power brakes become significantly more difficult to use following loss of power.

Dt:the engine seized without indication.the temperature gauge elevated and within a matter of seconds the engine locked up.the engine was runningand the consumer's wife was pulling into driveway.the consumer took the vehicle to a dealer and was told there was a ground strap attached to a coolant tube on the engine, and that resulted in premature wear of cooling tube, allowing escape of coolant. The engine was destroyed.the engine was under warranty, but the coolant tube was not, and they would not honor the warranty.manufacturer was contacted and would not honor warranty as well.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving approximately 10 mph and approaching a traffic stop, the vehicle stalled without warning. The engine was restarted and the vehicle resumed normally. The failure recurred whenever the engine was idled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the failure was contributed to the idle air control valve, which was replaced. The failure continued to occur after the repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning, approximately eight times. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnostic testing but the mechanic was unable to produce any failure codes. The manufacturer was not contacted.the failure mileage was 114,000.

Oil pressure keeps changing when it shouldn't which is causing car to overheat.

While traveling on the highway without prior warning the vehicle will stall and will not restart.please fill in additional information dealer is aware of the problem. Ts

While dropping my children off at school the check gauges light lit up. Nothing on my gauges appeared to be wrong except for the fuel gauge being on 1/4 tank so i continued on my 1 mile trip to the school. When my children exited the vehicle the check gauges light lit again and the truck started to sputter. I then turned the truck off and turned it back on. The light came on again and then the engine stopped. I called for a tow. Several hours and at a cost the mechanic told me that my engine had seized and the problem was engine sludge.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.while driving approximately 30 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled unexpectedly.there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel.the engine restarted on the first attempt and resumed normal operation.the failure occurred intermittently.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing, but the failure could not be duplicated.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic on a separate occasion for the same failure, but there were no resolutions.currently, the vehicle is being diagnosed at the authorized dealer.the contact is waiting on a response to determine the cause of the failure.the vin and failure mileage were unavailable.the current mileage was 100,000.

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango used with 60k i have accumulated less than 3k from september until january and i've had to replace my entire engine. Reason mechanic states there is sludge throughout the engine.

While driving 35 mph check engine light came on,and the oil pressure dropped immediately afterwards.subsequently, vehicle was driven for a quarter of a mile, and it sounded like a diesel engine when the consumer arrived at the prescribed destination. Vehicle was towed to the dealership the following day, andmechanic determinedthat the failure wasdue to sludge building up in the engine.dealership willeitherclean out the oil panor replace the motor.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving 15 mph the vehicle stalled without any prior warnings.he could not restart the vehicle.he contactedthe manufacturer and the dealership , but was not provided with any assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired to-date. The current and failure mileages were 141,016.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.while driving 35 mph, the oil pump failed without warning.the oil pressure dropped and the motor locked.the dealer rebuilt the transmission, but the failure continued.the vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times, but they could not duplicate the failure.the contact stated that there was oil leakage in cold weather.when the engine heated up, there was sludge because the leaker stopped the strainer.the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was approximately 112,300 and failure mileage was 91,053.

While returning from a family vacation(app. 600mi. Round trip) the durango check gauges light came onthe dash, i found the temp gauge was hot, while looking for a wide place to pull over on the highway the motor died.i opened the hood to try to find the problem i found that the coolant reservoir was still full of cool fluid, and the radiator was also cool(about body temp) also found the top radiator hose was way too hot to touch. While waiting for the tow truck, about 30 min. Later, i heard bubbling, and gurgles from the coolant system, then the radiator was really hot.after having the tow truck drop it off at my mechanic, he said the motor was blown(no compression in cylinders 2, 4, and 6) probably caused by a stuck thermostat.estimated repair bill for a remanufactured motor app. $6,000.

The check engine light went on.took our 2002 dodge durango to our 5 star dealership and was told we had sludge in our engine.this vehicle had 24,289 miles at this time.both the dealership and chrysler said the sludge was do to owner neglect since i couldn't produce eight oil change receipts.the oil was changed about every 6,000 miles.needless to say they are not going to cover the repair under the 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty or the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.while driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a clunking, whining, and humming sound coming from the front end of the vehicle.he drove to the repair shop and the mechanic stated that both the upper and lower ball joints and a tie rod needed to be replaced.the mechanic performed a wheel alignment.nhtsa campaign id number 04v596000 (suspension:front: control arm:upper ball joint) was referenced.the contact was also informed that the entire cooling system needed to be replaced because the dealer could not locate the cause of the failure.the cooling system has not worked properly since the repair.the switch to operate the blower motor fan only works on high.the failure mileage was 110,000.updated 07/15/08.*ljthe brakes were replaced numerous times. Engine failure, stalling.*la

The engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled several times, the dealer was unable to rectify the problem.the vehicle stopped abruptly on the parkway.the vehicle had been to the dealer on six occasions and the problem was never resolve.scc

Sludge in engine in 2005 repaired by chrysler the old part is not available.now again in 2008 sludge in engine. Car stopped while in transit in the off ramp of major highway.sludge in engine has occurred twice now.

While crossing an intersection the vehicle stalled without warning. The dealer stated that they are aware of the problem, however they are unable to find a fix at this time.

2002 dodge durango stalling without warning.it has stalled at idle and also at highway speeds causing a loss of power steering and brakes.

Owner purchased vehicle on 7/3/03 with 1300 miles on odometer.owner had problems with noises under the hood and in the steering column.vehicle would slip out of park into neutral or reverse.dealership said there was nothing wrong with the vehicle.on 11/1/03 the vehicle caught fire and burned.fire started under hood in engine compartment, but damage too severe to determine exact cause.

We bought our 2002 dodge durango in january of 2008. We have gotten regular oil changes, and use on synthetic oil. We never had any issues with it, untilsunday september 28, 2008. Everything was fine no weird noises, feelings of the truck shaking, or jumping then when i stopped at a stoplight all the oil pressure dropped. The truck kept running as normal though. As soon as i accelerated the oil pressure started climbing again, and i thought it was just a fluke. As soon as i pulled into my driveway however the check gauges light came on again, and all the oil pressure dropped. From everything we have read about this problem, the fix is very costly up to 4000.00 dollars. We have not gotten it fixed as of yet, because we do not have the money for a new engine!!!

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated when driving below 50 mph with the air conditioning activated, the vehicle would continuously overheat. The contact stated the head gasket was defective and causing the failure but the vehicle was not diagnosed by the dealer. The dealer advised the vehicle would need to be diagnosed at the owner's expense before any repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 90,000.

The valves on this engine burned out at 59,000 miles.the cause was revealed to be a defective camshaft which was rough and pitted and had burned the valves.this was a manufacturer's defect and not poor maintenance;i have had the oil changed with synthetic oil every 3,000 miles and otherwise taken excellent care of this vehicle.the suv required a new camshaft and complete valve job, costing approximately $2200 including parts and labor.

Engine just stopped.car was taken to chrysler dealership.they said there is sludge in the engine.so far nothing has been done to correct the problem.

2002 dodge durango...when vehicle gets hot...mainly in summer driving conditions...it will go to a very low idle..almost to the point of stalling...have found out through vehicle repairman that the manifold heat sensor is too close to the actual manifold and thus it does its job...slows the engine idle down...in other words thinks the engine is hotter than it really is...there is a aftermarket kit..cost 300 dollars or so to correct this...chrysler corp will not repair this...it is a design defect and should be taken care of by chrysler...not by the vehicle owner...

Truck stalled any time anywhere.on highway at speed, in intersections, wherever.its a miracle no one has been hurt.this all started at approx 26,000 miles.been to 2 service depts and no one can fix it.this is not to mention the many other visits to the dealer for items such as wipers, cruise control, radios, door locks, and much more.i'm done !!!!!

Lemon law vehicle, been fighting with companies for three months to get my money back and out of this truck!!no safety defect listed for this vehicle.

While traveling on the highway thevehicle shut down without prior warning.the dealership is awre of the problem.nlm

Consumer's vehicle loses power and shuts off while in motion.

Exhaust manifold bolts keep breaking on the right and left rear sidesof my engine. This has happened three times since i bought my 2002 dodge durango 4.7 engine. My local dodge dealer told me this was a design flaw by dodge and they know it but won't do anything to fix this problem. This creates an exhaust leak that can send exhaust fumes into the passenger compartment that could cause deadly problems.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the vehicle was repaired in 2007 according to nhtsa campaign id number 06v339000 (electrical system).afterwards, the heating unit failed to work properly.there were no failures prior to the recall repair.the contact also smelled a burning odor whenever the heating unit was activated.the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under recall and they could no longer assist.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were less than 100,500.

Headlights flicking on and off as well as the interior lights. Cannot drive at night.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that all of the lights on the vehicle flickered on and off sporadically. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer or a mechanic, but believed that the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign id number: 02v322000). The vehicle was not repaired. The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated while stopped in traffic with the brakes engaged, the brake lights were not illuminated. There were no warning lights illuminated indicating the brake lights had failed. The contact stated he had experienced the failure at least four times and the tail light assembly was replaced each time. The failure would occur due to the brake lights becoming too hot and softening the plastic lens. This would cause the electrical contact with lamp terminals .the failure mileage was 35,000 and the current mileage was 121,458. Updated 8/2/10 updated 08/09/10

This is a complaint in general about the blinding headlights being put on vehicles now days.can't something be done to regulate the brightness of the headlights placed in cars.also, drivers who drive with their driving lights on when not needed really cause problems.can't it be regulated that driving lights automatically shut off when approaching another vehicle.headlights nowdays are just too bright.i have almost been in several accidents due to being blinded by the bright headlights.

I have a 2002 dodge durango and i am experiencing the following problem. The headlights and parking lights go off and on while driving at night. This also occurs while parked and the headlights are on. Started about 3 days ago and has gotten worse. The lights stay off longer and it is happening more frequent. All inside lights flicker as well. I have looked on the forums and have found that this is an issue with the 1999 - 2003 model years and in fact, dodge has a recall for the 2003 year for the central timer module. This is a safety issue that needs to be acknowledged and fixed.

Multiple problems with 2002 dodge durango. Power locks intermittently lock and unlock without activating them. Bad creaking noise from front suspension, possible ball joint problems. Check engine light goes on and off intermittently. Brakes really soft, horrible stopping distance. Engine runs really rough in morning for first 10-15 minutes. Only 21000 miles.

During a rain storm, while my husband was driving, the locks would lock and unlock for no particular reason.he even got locked out and our child locked inside.

Vehicle fail to engage in park position which in turn locks the key in ignition leaving it susceptible for theives to break in and to take the whole vehicle and also very unsafe especially when your park in an incline.

The vehicle was driven to a local mechanic. The vehicle was examined by an engineer who was unable to diagnose a failure code, or recreate the reason why the vehicle rolled out of the park position. The vin was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 141,000.

My vehicle gets stuck in park.the situation has occurred on numerous occasions to the extent of 5 or 6 times a year.the car is completely inoperable when this happens.our solution, as recommended by a mechanic, was to bang on the steering wheel until it frees itself, but the most recent occurrence was unable to be resolved in this manner.my vehicle is of a year and model (2002 dodge durango) that has had a recall for the shifter lock situation (g28), but dodge has informed me that my vehicle does not qualify for repair.i have searched automobile sites on the internet and a number of folks have had the same problem as mine exhibits and have been able to get it repaired under the recall notice, yet mine gets denied.i had to have the vehicle towed to the dealer this morning due to this failure and will, no doubt, have to pay to get it back, but i feel my vehicle should be included in the recall repairs as announced.

While driving on an interstate highway at 65 miles per hour the engine shut down and i pulled off onto the shoulder.after sitting for about 5 minutes i tried the ignition key and the engine started and i continued on my way.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the shift lever became stuck in and out of the park position. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was awaiting to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was exhibiting the same failures as mentioned in nhtsa campaign number: 07v555000 (power train); however, the vin was not included. The failure mileage was 100,000.

Beginning in april 2012 it was extremely hard to get gear shift out of park you had to attempt this several times this occurred every so often there was no significant routine. We took this to dodge in gainesville several different trips and it would not repeat the problem for them. Starting around december of 2014 the vehicle would come out of park all by itself while parked and with the vehicle off then we would have trouble getting the key out or the vehicle back into park. This happens constantly and we are now scared to drive it. I called chrysler and they said there was a recall of this nature but not on my vehicle. I find this hard to accept considering it is doing the exact same failure of other durango's from this manufacture date. Please respond and let me know if i should junk my only vehicle or get a second mortgage to have repaired. On a second request i also had a windshield wiper motor replaced and was charged apparently there was a recall on that but gainesville dodge doesn't cover recalls ? is this normal or are the dishonest.

The vehicle does not shift into park thus key cannot be removed.

When i shift automatic transmission into gear it makes a ticking noise and also when i turn they're always kind of a thump feel to the entire vehicle. I also can take my key out of ignition no matter if its in drive, par, reverse etc...

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the vehicle could not be shifted out of park. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vin did not qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 178,433.

Truck will not go in right gear it skips from park to drive to neutral and now the key is stuck in the ignition. The vehicle will start but it will not go in park.

The transmission shift selector sometimes won't engage in park. This hasn't caused a problem yet. However i am very careful to set the parking brake so that the vehicle doesn't roll away. I called chrysler to inquire about a recall that affected many 2002 durangos that had a similar issue. They said my vehicle was not part of the recall even though i am having a similar problem.

Purchased durango new jan 2002 in kentucky.within 6 months dodge recalled it to replace whole back axle assembly (dodge stated it was too small for durango).since owning, when putting into reverse the transmission hesitates, and the vehicle barely moves (dealer stated could not find any problem).in alaska the check engine light comes on when going from warm garage into cold outdoors, stays on for a week(dealer could not find anything wrong).loud pounding noise when traveling above 40 mph with back windows down.durango has less than 20,000 miles and back seat shows considerable wear where seat belt latch contacts seat (poor design/placement of latch). *ph

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle vibrated excessively. Also, when the brakes were applied the vehicle would skid and jerk forward.the failure was recurring.the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id numbers: 07v555000(power train) and 08e064000(suspension) but was advised by the dealer that all recall for the vehicle had been satisfied. The manufacturer was notified of the failures.the approximate failure mileage was 215,000.updated 06/10/14 mathe consumer stated when she attempted to stop, the vehicle locked up and skidded forwarded.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact stated that the vehicle would become stuck in the park position for approximately 2-3 minutes.the dealer could not assist because the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift).the failure and current mileages were 113,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that he was unable to shift the vehicle into reverse or park while the vehicle was idle. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 07v555000 (power train) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted out of park. In addition, the vehicle failed to shift out of park intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 07v555000 (power train). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 138,500.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the gears failed to shift into park and that it was difficult to remove the key. In addition, the gears shifted independently and the key was able to be removed while the vehicle was still in motion. The contact had to apply the emergency brake at times to prevent a failure. The dealer replaced the gear shift cable and an s bracket, but the failure continued randomly. The manufacturer excluded the vehicle from nhtsa campaign number: 07v555000 (power train). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,347.

The shift column in my 2002 dodge durango will not go into gear. I have to giggle it several times to go into drive or reverse.

While travelling down i94 at highway speed my 2002 dodg durango engine seized forcing us to coast to the side of the highway.the dealership said that this was caused due to lack of maintainance ie. Oil changes which is not the case as i did the maintained oil changes.in doing research i have found that this vehicle is prone to oil sludge.nothing has been done as of right now to rectify the situation.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into the park position. The contact had shift into neutral and park on a flat surface since otherwise it would roll away. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

Transmission and power train broke. Pieces of it were later found on the road. Transmission melted andcaught fire, and later the whole vehicle was engulfed in flames and smoke. By the time firefighters had arrived , the whole vehicle front was burnt down. The vehicle was totaled.

Vehicle's drive shaft fell off while driving.*mrwhile driving the consumer noticed black smoke coming from the tailpipe.a few seconds later the driveshaft fell from underneath the vehicle.the consumer was able to manuever the truck onto the side of the road.the vehicle was towed to the dealer.three weeks later an inspector was sent to the dealer to check on the vehicle.at that time the consuemr was told that they could not provide any financial assistance.

The valve body went bad on the 2002 dodge durango.*mrthis problem occured while the consumer was driving which resulted in the vehicle slowing down to 20 mph.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact was unable to place the vehicle into drive.she had to maneuver the gear shifter several times before the vehicle would shift into the drive position.there were no warnings prior to this failure.the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the technician stated that a solenoid failed.the vehicle has not been repaired.the manufacturer stated that her vin was not included in a recall and no compensation would be provided.the failure mileage was 128,000 and current mileage was 129,800.

Have taken the truck in 3 times, and it has been transmission failures, have had vehicle for 6 months, and the transission computer has been replaced. The truck continues t have defects.

Dodge durango, transmissin failure at 29,000 miles, previouse durango ball joints went bad at 11,000 miles vehicle could not even pass inspection.

When the vehicle was started the engine raced and revved.the vehicle was taken tot he dealer who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced.*nlm

On the first days of november, i stopped on a red light, when the light was green i started going. When the transmission reached the third gear, the engine revved up to 3000 + rpm. Took it to mechanic and used the scanner tool to found out that the transmission was slipping on the third and fourth gear. I was driving late night so not too many cars around. I had to replace the whole transmission.

Consumer complained about a ball joint problem. Consumer tookthe vehicle to an independent tire shop to get the tires balanced and aligned and it was determinedthat ball joints were defective.the vehicle could not be aligned due to the ball joints. The dodge dealer denied that there was a problem with the ball joints.finally the dealer found play on one side and wanted to replace both upper ball joints.(the dealer rep stated that they were trained to check them a certain way and theywould not have found play the way that they were checking them)the transmission would intermittently not upshift, however the dealer was unable to duplicate. *sc

I have 30,000 miles on my 2002 durango slt plus.i have had the rear replaced twice and it still makes noise.my entire family just missed a accident ( 3 children)because the antilock brakes do not function properly under awd mode.the transmission is clunking everytime we stop.the ball joints are wearing out!just found out seat belts are unsafe!i am scared to death for my family !

Transmission sticks in low when starting cold. Also sticks intermittently when vehicle has not been used for several days. Has been to the dealership 18+ times for exam/repair attempts. Filed lemon law claim and chrysler refused to fix problem. Now when transmission sticks, and finally catches, the whole rear end shimmies.

My vehicle was in park and i had stepped out of the car to get the mail.my vehicle suddenly started driving forward and accelerating all by itself.it ended up running into the side of my home.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the vehicle would not respond when the contact attempted to shift into park.he had to shift into reverse in order to turn off the vehicle.he applied the emergency brake to keep the vehicle from rolling away.to start the vehicle, he had to shift into neutral and apply the emergency brake again to keep the vehicle from rolling away.he believed there may have been an issue with the transmission and took the vehicle to a local mechanic.they could not determine the cause of the failure; however, they stated that it was not due to the transmission.the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift).no repairs have been made.the current and failures mileages were less than 69,000.

My 2002 durango has developed problem where gear shift lever is sticking in park at initial startup.will free up after several minutes delay or if brake pedal is pumped 3-4 times.will not repeat unless engine is off several hours.regular daily occurrence past 4 weeks.current mileage is 100,010 miles.at first thought shift linkage freezing in winter weather but now have had problem on days with extended hours of temps well above freezing.no dealer contact yet.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The recall repair was performed in february 2008. Someone was nearly pinned between his vehicle and another vehicle when his son pulled the gear shift out of park. The dealer and the manufacturer informed him that there was a fail safe bracket that should have replaced during the recall repair. Since the bracket is made of pot metal it can fail easily. The vehicle is currently being serviced at the dealer. The failure mileage was 110000 and the current mileage was 111318.

Transmission will not stay engaged in park. Parkingwill not engage and the only way to keep vehicle from rolling is to apply the parking brake.

This note is to accompany the motor vehicle defect notification for my 2002 durango, vin 1b8hr48n42f188761. This is the second defective durango i have purchased in the last five months and it presents a safety issue. The first durango was only good for four days and less than 400 miles. We experienced multiple problems with it to include transmission shifting, engine vibrations, and poor handling problems. It was determined by the dealer that multiple computers were bad and it would take a considerable amount of time to repair the vehicle. As a solution, the dealer provided us another vehicle.the current durango is only five months old and has less than 5000 miles. It has been in the shop every weekend for the last three weeks for the same problem. As the vehicle is moving, it drops to first gear coming to an almost complete stop, launching the occupants forward due to the sudden speed reduction. This in itself is a safety issue since occupants could get hurt, not to mention loss of control by the driver, possibly causing an accident, or the vehicle been hit from behind. In addition to coming to an almost complete stop, the vehicle check engine light comes on and the vehicle locks the transmission on first gear (if it moves at all since the second time it malfunctioned, it would only go in reverse and had to be towed to the dealer). Problems continue with the vehicle. The dealer has indicated that there is a software problem with the transmission module but they do not have a fix for it yet!!!!! ts

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact stated that she did not receive a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift).there had been no failure to date.the current mileage was 76,000. Updated 04/28/08.*lj

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.the contact went to the dealer on two different occasions due to nhtsa campaign id number 07v555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift).on both occasions, the dealer stated that the part for the recall repair was unavailable.the contact was unable to schedule an appointment.he is currently experiencing the shifter locking once he turns the ignition.he lives in a remote location and the dealer is the only one in the area.the current mileage was 103,140 and failure mileage was 100,000. Updated 04-08-08 the consumer stated he traveled out of state to get the recall done. Updated

The transmission shifter is sometimes able to be moved out of 'park' without the key in the ignition.this does not happen all the time, but has occurred 4 times in the past week or so.i would like this checked and corrected under recall 07v555000, but when i called my dealership, they stated that "chrysler sends out recall information too early and the recall hasn't started yet".i called chrysler and they said that there are no open recalls on my durango.they would not look up the recall # i tried to give them.

I have a 2002 dodge durango.i purchased the vehicle around 12/20/07.around 1/5/08 i noticed that the vehicle could be shifted out of park with out the key in the ignition or the brake being pressed.this is an obvious safety concern as it could easily slip out of park or if there is a child in the car they could hit it out of park.i did some research on the problem and found that there was a recall for this exact problem on 01-02 dodge durangos and dakotas.i then got in contact with a dealership to have the recall work done and they said that my vin number was not under the recall and that i had to call chrysler customer service.i called them and they to told me my vehicle was not covered under the recall and that they would not fix it.i feel that my car should be covered under the warranty because i am experiencing the exact thing they were recalled for and have the same year and make of the recall.please let me know if there is any way you can help me.

Vehicle slips into gear without key being in the ignition. Please provide any further information.

Engine wasoff, keys out of ignition,a small child put vehicle into gear and vehicle rolled backwards, hitting a barn.please provide any further information.

The front suspension is having multiple problems, my 02 durangohas been through 2 previous cv joints on the driver's side and 1 previous on the passenger side, and now both have failed once again. Driver's side front hub assembly/bearing has gone bad for 2nd time, also the upper & lower ball joints have gone bad for the 2nd time each.i need 2 new lower back bumpers for the upper control arm (both front).my vehicle now has 103k miles.at approximately 60k miles the front propeller shaft went bad and once replaced, it somehow put a hole in the y - pipe for the exhaust, and that must be replaced as well, i was told the new/aftermarket shaft were slightly larger to accommodate the power, thus which took the space. All of this will be quite expensive.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2002 dodge durango. Vehicle mileage 34,000. Front passenger side cv joint noise and shims. The driver side cv joint had the same problem and was replaced at around 27,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that the vehicle would exhibit an abnormal rumbling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times but was never able to duplicate the failure. Most recently, the contact was informed by the dealer that the failure was caused by the rear differential, after the warranty was expired. The contact believed the failure to be an extreme safety issue because the vehicle could have slammed to a stop in a dangerous situation and the manufacturer denied the failure until after the warranty expired. The failure and current mileage was 62,000.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that while driving 10-15 mph, he heard a noise. When the vehicle was taken to local repair shop, the clutch pack retaining clip on the rear differential was replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.updated 1/21/11 the clutch pack retainer failed and had to be replaced as well as the entire rear differential post unit. Updated 03/23/11

Abs and brake light came on in the dash. The brakes did become spongy. Vehicle was taken directly to the mechanic about 3/4 down the road. He found the clip to the rear abs sensor had broken and the sensor torn apart. Further investigation showed that the sensor had been broken by the rear differential which had for no good reason shattered into pieces. This is a garage kept vehicle with 50,000 miles and no abuse.

On routine maintenance of the rear differential (ie. Fluid) found clip had broken and attached to magnet in housing. Called local dealer to inquire as to a recall, was told this was a recurring problem with this vehicle, but no recall and manufacturer would not pay to correct the problem.

Consumer complained aboutthe differential system.vehicle had been to the dealer several times andhad the rear endand front suspensionrebuilt. Currently, differential malfunctionedagain, causingfront end to lock up.dealer claimed they did not hear any noise, and that there was nothing they could do.

Broken pin that houses critical parts in rear differential may cause loss of control of suv dodge 2002 durango called manufacture no replacement parts availeable and no idea when one will be poses the question if this is a serious issue.

While driving, the consumer loss control of the vehicle, however the consumer managed to pull over safely and soon discovered there was fire underneath the vehicle.an investor did inspect the vehicle and ruled the fire was unsustainable and they would fix everything.*ph.according to the paper work the vehicle experienced a differential failure.

Only 14,000 miles and the dealership is now replacing entire transmission on my new 2002 dodge durango thank goodness we bought the extended warranty.the 1999 model we owned also had problems with engine and transmission we had no extended warranty when this was noticed. *nlm

Consumer stateswhile driving, the malfunction indicator light came on . Vehicle will not accelerate. Contacted dealer. As a result of the transmission control module.

Consumer states that while driving and without warning the shift indicator will read the wrong reading causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealer notified. Mr

Since i purhcased my 2002 durango slt in march of 2002. We have had nothing but problems. The air conditioning had to be repaired twice along with the lumbar. Our truck breaks down on a holiday weekend. We had to rent a car for two weeks until it was repaired. The transfer case was in shambles. It was covered under warranty, but we had to pay the 853.80, because daimler chrysler refuses to pay. The truck is a year 1/2 old that type of problem should not have happened and yet i still have to pay for another 3 and 1/2 years. This is a $30k truck. It's definately not worth it. Will never purchase or recommend for anyone to buy.

Driver and front passenger seats slide back and forth in an uncontrollable manner with acceleration, brake and turns.seat belts do not engage to limit forward/side movement of human body.seat sliding/movement has enough force to cause interruption of contact with vehicle's gas/brake pedals.forceful forward motion of sliding seat has enough momentum on driver's side to cause human impact on the steering wheel when a hard stop/brake engaged. Passenger side seat slides with enough force to cause head to impact windshield on sudden/hard stop. Seat belts do not engage to stop forward or side motion of human body when either seat slides back/forth.02/2015 chrysler jeep dodge ram repaired seat frame with a new switch (tech notes 545 and 579) at mileage:116,616.2017 current mileage:124,674.drivers/passengers at or below age/gender appropriate bmi.

The seat belt for the middle row seats on the passenger side will not pull out. The mechanic kept working with it until he was able to pull it out. He determined that it was not twisted and ordered a new assembly. It is on back order. In the meanwhile, the seat belt malfunctioned again and this time the mechanic could not pull it out.i had to fold up the second row of seats and carry my cargo in the middle until the seat belt is replaced. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***763142

No injuries yet, rear bench seat, seat belts release randomly, will not stay locked, all three do the same, one worse than others, is getting worse.

The vehicle was involved in a rollover collision.both front driver and passenger safety belts did not lock or retract, resulting in occupants sustaining serious injuries.

June 16, 2005 - my son turned 17.june 23, 2005 - my son received a 2002 dodge durango as a gift.june 26, 2005 - my son's 2002 dodge durango's driver's seatbelt failed as he was exiting his father's driveway.june 28, 2005 - took dodge in for failed seatbelt and was told via telephone that it would cost over $400.00 to replace.i called manufacturer and complained, siting websites and cbs (2003) documentary about the continuing problems with this vehicle. One of them being the failed seatbelt.to quote "approximately 16 milion dodge vehicles have a seat belt that does not pass the standard for accidental safety".their response:well its' not under warranty and its not a recall, but i'll see what we can do.they are charging me a "co-pay" of $75.00 for a new complete replacement.your government branch, the dodge manufacturer and owners of this type vehicle are well aware that this is a manufacturer's defect.could dodge give me back my son if my son had been in an accident and lost his life because his dodge durango driver's seat belt failed!!when is nhtsa going to take a stand and tell the dodge manufacturer to take care of their lemons.as far as the questions below, nhtsa knows better than i.

Adjustable lumbar support on bucket seatscame apart and the adjustment wheel is no longer attached to anything. The seat is dished out in the back and very uncomfortable.

2002 dodge durango driver side seat came off the track. Customer states that the dealer said that the repair would not be covered under warranty. Consumer stated that the seat broke away from the track and was not hit by another vehicle.

On or about november 14, 2002, raymond nottnagel was severely burned by a seat heater in the driver's seat of a 2002 dodge durango 4x4 r/t, vin:1b4-hs78z72f-139578.mr. Nottnagel is a paraplegic.he did not initially feel the burn occuring.the 3rd degree burn required mr. Nottnagel to spend the better part of 5 months on his stomach, and then he gradually returned to being able to sit for limited periods of time with the correct padding.the seat heater apparently did not turn off after reaching a normal temperature and reached a sufficient temperature to cause a 3rd degree burn.the case is now in litigation in sacramento superior court.

Dt*:the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, white smoke appeared from under the middle of the front bench seat.the vehicle was pulled over. After blowing on the smoke, a small flame was observed under the seat.the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, where it was determined that a wiring connection under the seat had caught on fire and burned.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving at any speed, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle vibrated. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was difficult to stop. The failure recurred. The contact stated that the front brake rotors and brakes were replaced; however, the failure recurred. It was unknown where the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 210,000.

Had to put in the shop for the brake lines were rusted through and the exhaust is the same way to the manifold

The braking system has always had a problem "skipping" even after multiple repairs - replacing brakes, rotors, brake booster, master cylinder, hubs and wheel bearings.if i have to come to a "short stop" the truck skips like it tries to stop, lets go, then tries to stop again.it happens about 3-4 times before it actually comes to a complete stop!i think it is related to the durango's.i had another model years ago (1999) and the same thing happened.i didn't realize until having the same trouble with the 2002 model it was probably related to the model of the vehicle or maybe dodge in general.i was actually in 2 very minor accidents due to this. Once in each vehicle. After the last round of repairs all seemed great, but it just never lasts!

During breaking, steering, and turning, i hear a "clacking" sound and there is a feeling of something sticking. When the suv is parked on my drive way, i release the hand break and i can hear a strong "clack" sound. I had times where the breaking system was difficult to press. I took the suv to pep boys and their evaluation shows that it needs upper and lower ball joints, front brakes, and shock and struts. Steering: terrible and extremely difficult to turn (super hard to steer). Some parts where changed by pep boys in an "urgent" situation. The steering "bearings" ?(a part that goes from the steering wheel down to the motor) was changed. (i have a copy of the work done).

While making urgent stop with heavy brake pedal application, brakes suddenly let loose for a moment and then resume braking action. Upon first incident, dealer replaced various abs components. Not solved. More checks, not solved. Eventually, front and rear brake pads were changed, even though they were not worn out. This solved the problem for another 30,000 or so miles. With slight wear on the brake pads, problem occurred again. Paid for new brake pads even though they were not recommended. This again solved the problem.

Happened twice since dec. 2018 when driving on city streets at speed of aprx. 35-45 and abs was deployed it immediatly unlocked and jumped forward causing the car to not immediately stop. Came very close to rear ending car in front of me had i been closer.

I was parked in driveway as i was exiting to go into street the brakes felt very soft. As i shifted into drive the brake pedal went all the way down with minimal braking. I pulled to the side and stopped the engine. I noticed a pool of fluid which turned out to be brake fluid from a brake line. Today nine months later the same thing happened on the other side. This vehicle was purchased new in october,2003.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorbaord. In addition, both rear wheels seized. The contact waited a while and continued driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brakes failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000. *dt updated 12/06/18

I have a 2002 dodge durango with 4wd and it has 37,000 miles on it. I have to change both front wheel brake rotors. When i took the brake pads out, i found that on both wheels the inside brake pad has been completely worn out and pitted into the rotor while both outside brake pads has only less than 1/3 wear out of the material. It looks like the disk brake system in the front wheel has some kind of design flaw. I am a very good mechanical engineer, i think the clip located on the outside of the disk brake prevented the outside pad from effectively engaging with the rotor when the brake was applied.

Had a car length & 1/2 in front of me, i do this because i have had problems before with the car not stopping. Applied brakes normally, car slowed & pulled to the right but would not stop. Applied brakes with both feet - literally lifted myself up on the seat during applying of brakes & still would not stop. Rear ended car in front.

Anti-lock brakes on my 2002 dodge durrango have put me into the middle of an intersection durring a red light ,at stops on dirt roads the rear wheels lock like the front brakes aren't working and it looks like a cracked weld on the control arm bracket on the left front. Dodge say's nothing is wrong and they won't fix it ,i have a pregnant wife and 4 kids who ride in this suv and i can't get dodge to fix it, oh and the steering feels loose on it to ,road walks.

Had to make a sudden stop and abs system was dangerously slow to engage, release and re-engage. Brake pedal went all the way down to the floor and barely stopped before hitting vehicle in front of me. Took it to 2 dealers and both said there was nothing wrong according to specifications. Major safety hazard!

Vehicle took longer to stop.as result, consumer's vehicle was involved in anaccident. Dealer stated therewas amarginal problem with the brakes.

Returned vehicle to dealer complaining of poor antilock brake performance and excessive pedal travel.dealer resurfaced front rotors/replaced pads.vibration from run out is gone but poor antilock performance and excessive pedal travel still exits.dealer states all is fine.excessive stopping distance contributed to first accident.

The vehicle has a little over 35k miles on it.it failed the safety inspection because right inboard brake pad was loose.it was loose because the anti-rattle clip had rotted away inside the caliper piston.the left side was intact but nearly rusted away.there was over 50% of the friction material left on pads.

1. Driver's side spindle nut works loose causing rotor to become loose.2. Loose rotor causes the sealed bearing to loose grease and fail. Can casuewheel loss or loss of control.3. Rotor and spindle nut must be replaced each time.this has occurred on this vehicle two times.

When the driver applied the brake pedal it went to the floor which caused extended stopping distance.nlm

I have a 2002 dodge durango. It has rear antilock brakes. I have had numerous close calls in hard stop situations where the wheels lock up and the vehicle slides forward. I have taken it to a brake specialist who agreed after a test ride there was a serious problem but said i needed to get the dealer involved. I have taken it to several dodge dealers over a period of about four years. They have made several recommendations to which i had the service done and it made no difference. Now they keep telling me there is nothing wrong.i got dodge regional involved last year. They told me to take it back to the dealer and have them check it out. The dealer said that the abs was engaging early but did nothing to correct the problem.i recently reached dodge regional again. He says he talked to the service manager at the dealership who told him they recommended the rotors be replaces and i refused. I told him that was a lie that i had the rotors and pads replaced. Dodge regional said there was nothing he could do to help. He said the service manager recommended i bring the car in for inspection again at another $90.i told him i refuse to keep paying these fees to have them tell me there's nothing wrong. I then put in a call to the service manager at the dealer and left him a detailed message asking him to please return my call.he never returned my call.i have attempted to reach dodge regional for the last few days and his phone just rings with no voicemail picking up.i am out of ideas and patience.i love my vehicle but it is a severe hazard.it seems as though once again nothing will happen until someone is killed or seriously injured before anything gets done.i have plenty of documentation with my complaints to the dealers as backup. I hope someone there can help me get this problem resolved. By the way, i know another person who has the same year durango as me and she complains of the same problem.

Dt:the contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact states that while driving the vehicle the brakes on the drivers side caught on fire.the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer.the brake pads melted to the rotor and the calipers on the drivers side were replaced. The brakes and the rotors were replaced about two months prior to this and six months before that they were replaced.the total amounts of times the brakes has been replaced 5-6 times and that is changing the rotors more than twice.

2002 dodge durango developed a problem with the brake equipment.*mrthe pavement was dry when the consumer rear-ended another vehicle.the consumer felt as if she had no brakes.the consumers friend experienced the same problem.the dealer suggested that the brakes were leaking and worn out.*sc

Dealer states that brake rotors are warped to the point of not being turned and that i will need to pruchase new ones at the cost of approx. $450.00. The brakes pads are only slightly worn. Car shutters vigorously when brake is applied. Dealer states that this is not under warrenty and that this is not a manufacturers defect. I have contacted dodge/chrystler waiting for a response.

Consumer states that when trying to apply the brakes the brake will pulsate causing the vehicle to have extended stopping distance. Dealer notified. Ts

Continued problem with braking system. Have had brakes replaced three times in 80k miles. Once the brakes seized on the road ( was stopped by trooper due to smoke) and had to be towed.recently similar, precursor symptoms to seizing began again, they were confirmed by my dealership and the entire front braking system had to be replaced. This is the second dodge truck/van that i have owned that has had this problem.my previous vehicle had to be towed three times after the brakes seized.seems to affect trucks/vans with 16" dia wheels since i have owned other chrysler products without this problem.the maintenance manager's response to my complaint about the fourth major braking problem with this vehicle was "no car is perfect". I fully understand that nothing is perfect, but if you can't get the braking system right you shouldn't be selling cars. In my mind that's the braking system is the number one safety priority on a vehicle.

While driving 30 mph vehicle hit a pot hole . Consumer applied the brakes, lost control of the vehicle, and hit a curb. Passenger's side wheel fell off.consumer had the vehicle towed to dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced both upper and lower ball joints.ea03-023

The consumer had to use excessive force when braking to stop the vehicle.*nlm

Dt:when the consumer hit the brakes they made a clunking sound and the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance.the occurred regardless of weather conditions.

Service brakes, hydraulic: antilock with rear abs only (2-wheel)when the abs system is activated the vehicle surges forward. It is as if the front brakes will not stop. This has been a problem sense the vehicle was new. When it was mention to the dealer they said that was how the abs system worked.

Brake problems with my 2002 dodge durango xlt plus. At high or low speeds when you have to make a sudden stop and hit the brakes, they attempt to grab but then let go, and your only hope is to stop in time. I have had the brakes looked at by 2 mechanics other than the dodge dealership(tim parker of hot springs) and both say that there is a definite problem with the brakes. However, after spending $300 for brake pads and several other visits to tim parkers, they keep denying a problem and tell me that is just how the brakes are on the dodge. I asked them if when that 1 small child runs out in the street to catch his ball and i am the unlucky person to be traveling down that street and i apply the brakes but can not stop, if they would be ready to accept their responsiblility. I have copies of all reports from them stating there is nothing wrong with the brakes. I am afraid to drive it at all but traveleing 64 miles a day it is necessary. Can someone please help me? surely i am not the only person complaining of the brakes!

When coming to a sudden stop abs brakes failed and pedal would go to the floor, causing an accident.

When the brakes were applied, the pedal traveled to the floor, which caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.

Consumer was driving and applied brakes suddenly.brakes were functioning erratically and car would not stop, only "barely" slow down.abs did not engage and consumer had to drive vehicle off the road to effectively slow it down.dealer could not duplicate or diagnose problem. Ts

While driving on 5/27/05both front brakecalipers locked, fortunately only traveling a few miles..brakes smoldering...warped rotaors and crystalized both front brakes' pads...for correction new master clyinder, fron rotors, calipers and brake pads

No summary listed for above vehicle.

When applied brakes to stop with plenty of distance and not a sudden stop,it kept on rolling nearly rear ending the car in front of us.we finally stopped about an inch from the car in front of us.it seems like the brakes were not working.

When having to stop when someone stops in front of you and put on your brakes all of a sudden, i have no brakes. My husband has already had 1 wreck and i have almost had 3. Last friday while traveling to work a truck pulling a utility trailer suddenly stopped in front of me and i had to hit my brakes, when i did they went directly to the floor and since i wasn't real close i finally did stop about 2 inches from the utility trailer. When this happens and i put my brakes on i push the brake pedal down and hold it. But there are no brakes, it tries to brake but the pedal just keeps on going to the floor.i noticed afterwardthat the brakes seem to readust themselves. Took vehicle to alexander dodge and they looked a brakes but did not find anything. This is very dangerous, since this time i almost did not get stopped.

When stopping quickly, but not in a panic. The abs brake system will sometimes brake and release.when the brakes are no where near lockup.this has caused the me to come close to rear ending a vehicle in front of me that should have been a slightly faster stop than normal, but no where close to causing an accident.i would prefer no abs system if this system on the durango is normal.no accidents for over 30 years, but two close calls with this vehicle.i know this is not normal for normal abs brakes.dealer found no problems with the brakes.dt

The abs systemwill not allow for an emergency stop.the "cycle" time is very long between brake application on a dry road.sometimes the brake pedal will go all the way to the floor and no brakes applied.have had to steer sharply to avoid other cars, can not rely on the brakes to sop every time.*la

When having to make a sudden stop, not quick enough to normally cause skidding, the anti lock breaks will engage and not release causing an extended stopping distance.about 50% of the time when the anti-lock breaks engage, the break peddle goes all the way to the floor and the vehicle will continue to roll.we have had this occur several times.we have had to avoid other vehicles to prevent an accident as well as have rolled through a few red lights.each time the dealer does not find anything wrong with the vehicle.the replaced and adjusted the rear breaks once which did seem to help having the anti lock breaks engage so easily.today it happened again and we had to swerve onto the curb to avoid rear ending a vehicle which resulted in a broken rim on the vehicle. *nlm

I was traveling at 25 mph and approx. 100 feet behind other cars when someone about 10 cars ahead made a hard stop causing everyone behind them to do the same. I heard at least three cars tires screaching to a stop in front of me. When i applied my brakes in my 2002 dodge durango with brake pedal pushed down as far as it would go and as hard as i could the truck slowed to about 5 mph with everything loose in the truck flying foward, but the truck did not stop. For the last 30 feet it just kept going at 5 mph and i hit the rear of of a 97 honda accord. The tires never locked up or did i feel any anti-lock pulsation in the brake pedal as i have on other vehicles. I had no control in this accident. If i had not had 4 wheel anti-lock brakes i would have been able to stop. Something is wrong with the braking system on this truck!but the dealer said everything was normal. People are going to be killed if this problem is not dealt with. The honda i hit suffered heavy damage because of the height differance in bumpers. My truck was not as bad. My auto insurace rate will be going up from what i believe i could not have prevented. Thank goodness no body was hurt.

Needed to do a hard stop.the anti-lock brakes seemed slow to engage, dis-engage, and re-engage during which the car would roll.basically, the abs would engage, then disengage, and before they would re-engage, the car rolled.it was a noticeable amount of time, and a noticeable roll before the abs re-engaged.it seemed like it took a second.since the car rolled and wouldn't stop, we needed to swerve to miss traffic.took it to a dodge dealer, and they said nothing was wrong.even test drove it with the service manager, pointed out the roll, but he only gave me excuses.i guess if the abs light doesn't come on, they don't think anything is wrong.

Occasionally under normal or slightly heavy breaking the anti-lock break system will kick in with a noticeably long pause between breaking and rolling. This causes our durango to take longer to stop than normal. I have had a couple instances where i stopped too close to the car in front of me or too close to the cross walk because the vehicle's breaking system failed. My wife rear ended another vehicle when the durango would not stop soon enough because of this problem.

When the consumer attempted to apply the brakes, the anti-lock-brake system engaged, which almost resulted in a rear-end collision. The dealer replaced the anti-lock brake system unit, however the problem recurred.

Consumer states vehicle pulls to the right when applying brakes. Dealer notified.

The brake rotors need to be turned or replaced at 25000 miles.the vehicle is too heavy/big for the smaller sized rotors.vehicle does not respond efficiently to brakes.in my case, the master cylinder needed to be replaced by the dealership at 25000 miles.this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed with dodge on the manufacturing of the durango.

Problems with brake equipment on 2002 dodge durango.*mrwhile applying the brakes the front end of the vehicle shimmied.upon inspection of the brakes the consumer noticed that the pads were like new but the rotors were corroded so badly that the metal was flaking off and leaving pits on the surface. The consumer believes that materials used were substandard.

The brakes pulsated when they were applied. However, there wasn't any problem with braking. The driver took the vehicle to the dealer and the mechanic noticed that both front rotors were warped and needed to be resurfaced after replacing 3 sets of rotors within six months the consumer feels that dodge auto parts are defective.

On april 20 my wife took our 2002 dodge durango to the dealersip to have a pa inspection performed. The inspection in 2003 was routine and showed no signs of abnormal wear. Since the last inspection my drove the durango 10,010 miles. The vehicle is garaged each night at our home. The inspection mechanic at the dealership failed our durango due to the left front brake rotor being severly rusted. Even the retaining clips that hold the brake pads in place are rusted off after only 10,010 miles from last year. How can a brake rotor become rusted when it is being driven each day by my wife. Her work is eight miles from our home, one way. I suspect the rotor is made from defective steel. We have all the service records as the dealership services the durango when needed. Total mileage on the vehicle is 22,458 over 2 years. We are paying to have the work completed but feel the rotors are defective as are the brake pads. I myself inspected the rotor and found the axel to be rusting along with the spindle arm attached to possibly defective ball joints.. Common folks such as myself and my wife depend on your agency to represent us. Had we know of the poor quality of the durango we never would have spent our money on it. I have contacted dodge customer service and they have been of no help. I have instructed the mechanic at the dealership to give me back all the parts being replaced so i will have them for evidence. I also have the supporting paperwork. Unsafe vehicles should not be allowed on the highways where people can get killed. At 60 miles per hour if your rotor breaks or the ball joint pops out someone will be dead. Thank you in advance for your help.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving 75 mph, the rear driver side tire vibrated, accompanied by a grinding noise and loud sound. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered the whole tire was missing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the rear axle and drum needed to be replaced. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Front left brake caliper locked during rush hour leaving washington, dc on a friday evening.the durango had 79,000 miles on it. The vehicle was purchased from a dealer's lot inaugust2006.all maintenance has been kept up on the vehicle.we had to replace both calipers in the front. Also, replace both brake pads and shoes.the brake shoes were brand new.they were placed on the durango a month prior.

Anti-lock brakes - have to extend stopping distance more than any other car ever owned. Anti-lock activates very easy, but does not cause durango to slow down quickly. Dealership said master cylinder has internal leak and needs to be replaces - cost is over $500. Durango only has 60,000 miles on it.

Vehicle fail to engage in park position which in turn locks the key in ignition leaving it susceptible for theives to break in and to take the whole vehicle and also very unsafe especially when your park in an incline.

The lever for tilt steering wheel broke in steering column and steering wheel will no longer change positions. According to dodge dealer, a new steering column is the only remedy.

Automatic transmission, gear shift is locking in park.after starting vehicle and trying to shift into drive, gear shift will not move.has occurred 3 times in last two weeks. After "playing" with gear shift, trying to get it to move, i hear a click and then it is operative.on the 3 occasions, took from approximately 1 to 3 minutes before hearing click. Looked up on line to see if others were having issue and search led me to a recall for2002 dodge durango issued in december 2007. I never received a recall notice at that time.nhtsa id # 07v555000 related to ignition/park shift interlock system becoming inoperative.

I currently am having all 4 of my ball joints replaced on my 2002 dodge durango and i noticed that my upper right ball joint is original. This ball joint was under recall and i contacted dodge about this. They said the recall was replaced in 2005. I assured them that this ball joint is original as it is pressed into the control arm and asked if i could simply bring my car into them and have them check this out. They told me i would have to pay a diagnostic charge of 104.00 and that if it was found to be original, then i would possibly get the 104.00 back. I have been on the phone with dodge customer service twice now and nobody will allow me to quote them that i would get this money back if the recall was found to not have been performed. I don't know how it's fair for me to pay dodge for this diagnostic fee if they lied about doing the recall in the first place. I am disgusted at dodge for not only claiming that they performed this service of changing the upper ball joints in 2005, but for refusing to check the problem for free now. If this dodge dealer claims that they already fixed this recall, and it wasn't really fixed, it makes me wonder what else do they do, when nobody is monitoring them. Ball joints is a huge concern for me, as if they fail, i will crash. I would love for an investigation to be performed at this dodge that claims they fixed my ball joints, because they could be risking other lives as well.

The vehicle does not shift into park thus key cannot be removed.

Brake falure on 2002 dodge durango, and steering problems.*la

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While the vehicle was stationary, the steering wheel was positioned in a lopsided manner which made it difficult to steer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000. The vin was not available.

I was making a right hand turn and then an immediate left at about 10mph i heard a pop on driver's side front wheel and then lost control of my car.i was able to regain control of my car but it would not turn to the left i was able to get the car to side of the road even though steering was extremely difficult.i checked the tire it was fully inflated but the top of tire was tilted out at the top i could not drive the vehicle any more due steering difficulties.i called a tow truck and had the car towed to mechanic.i was told by tow truck operator and the mechanic that the upper ball joint on arm had separated from the arm causing me to lose control of the car.a friend stated that durango had been recalled for this issue.i contacted my mechanic and he in turn contacted dodge.he was informed that there was no recall for my car.i checked your website and saw that other durango had in fact been recalled for this exact issue.i contacted dodge and was also informed that there was nothing they could do because my durango was not a part of the recall.i had my mechanic fix the upper ball joint.i had them checked the upper ball joint on the other side and it was also coming out.i had to pay to have both upper ball joints replaced on the front end of my car.

Vehicle has just over 74,000 miles and a very slight shudder and vibration from front wheels evolved into hard vibration at speeds over 35 mph.i took the vehicle to a repair facility where i was told that both front hubs and bearings had to be replaced because of wear, and the tie rod ends on both sides were worn beyond repair and had to be replaced.the cost of repair to my vehicle is approximately $1024.00.

The steering is very loose. Has a lot of play in it. Have replaced tie rod ends. At this time we can not seem to find out what is causing it.

I was driving my 2002 dodge durango down the street and all of a sudden my steering column locked on me. I could not turn or steer the vehicle. It took every ounce of strength to finally move the vehicle to the side of the road and i am a pretty big guy. Took it back to the dealer where i purchased it and after examining it they told me that the rack and pinion was shot. I just purchased the vehicle about 3 months ago so they told me it was no longer covered under warranty. I ended up having them replace the rack and pinion steering and it cost be about $600.00. Its a good thing i wasn't on the highway going 65mph when this occurred.

Heavy rust buildup on frame behind upper control arm mounts. After removing rust, frame metal is very thin with holes throughout. Possibly leading to flexing & cracking. Definitely reducing crash abilities.

On 04/10/08 cust#3792938 inv#15199 i took my car for recall #g28 ignition/park shift interlock.i drove off the lot, noticed the check engine light on.it was not on when i took my car in.i was all ready on the freeway & was all ready late for an appointment.i could not move my steering wheel to the level i had it before i drove into the lot.i took my car back the 15th for them to adjust the steering wheel (i could have had an accident).they told me the steering wheel tilt knob was gone.the service manager was very helpful, told me he would order the part at no charge.i forgot to mention the check engine light.i waited more than 2 days.on the 19th i returned, inv# 151350, & was held up for 1hr, only to be told the part had been used on another car.the service advisor wanted to blame me for the missing knob.he wanted to charge me to connect their diagnostic machine on my car.i told them i would not pay for this service. The service manager told me the diagnostic machine was broken & they would have to order another one.it seemed funny to me, being that they had a lot of customers after i arrived.what kind of repairs were they doing on cars' without a diagnostic test on them? when i have taken my car in they have always run those diagnostic tests.i was told on the 19th by the service manager he would accommodate me & have someone go out to my home to put the knob on my car.he also said stated that he would look into the code (check engine) to see if it had anything to do with them pulling apart the steering column. What code? being that he told me the diagnostic machine was not working.now i am waiting for the part & most likely will have to drive around with that check engine light on until i can afford to have them evaluate it.it seems to me that it was not a big issue with them being that they were not that concerned about the check engine light when they handed over the car after they replace the recall part on the 10th.

Purchased a used 2002 dodge durango with 70k miles.vehicle was under limited warranty.drivers power window fell into the door at highway speed, nearly causing an accident just from the shock.went to dealership, was told it was an electrical issue, so not under warranty.took it to a private mechanic, $500 to replace the regulator. A few months later, passenger side fails, took it to a different dealership, was told it was a plastic pulley that failed, would have been under warranty, but my warranty just expired.another $500.driver side failed again a few months later, started calling dodge and complaining, nothing they could do they said.learned how to replace myself,3 times drivers side rear regulator, 2 times passenger rear regulator, 3 times drivers front, 2 times passenger front.now three are broken again, the replacement part is the same plastic junk.i am tired of replacing them. Dodge has told me that it has been to long and they will not be able to assist me, but can sell me the parts...again..i have been told that cold weather, slamming the doors, over use of windows, could all be contributing issues. In other words, human error.this is not the case in my garaged full leather showroom quality vehicle.google dodge window regulators, you will find pages of complaints.wish i would have bought a car that doesnt need to be at 86 degrees constantly, that could go down a bumpy road, that i could roll down the windows more than twice a day (because that is what they recommend), could shut the doors without fear of slamming them, didnt have tape on the windows to hold them up, could go through a drive through with my door closed, and didnt cost me over $3000 in window parts. This is a safety issue as you will find if your going down the highway and your window instantly falls into your door.shame on dodge for not making this issue right.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. While driving 15 mph, the doors independently locked and unlocked continuously without warning. As a result, the battery became inoperable.

Heavy rust buildup on frame behind upper control arm mounts. After removing rust, frame metal is very thin with holes throughout. Possibly leading to flexing & cracking. Definitely reducing crash abilities.

Started hearing noises under my gas, brake pedals. Big knocking noises. Found out about a recall that my truck needed regarding the ball joints that could cause them to brake and lose the tires. When to the dealership and was told that i had passed the mileage of 100,000, and would have to pay out of pocket. It was only 2463 miles over. I thought recalls don't have a time limit to get fixed? so now i had to find a car shop to fix both balljoints, on both sides. To top it off the right side needed a new hub accessory replaced also that i again had to pay on my own. Why are so many things going wrong now? and by reading online i'm not the only one with these same issues.

When backing out with steering wheel turned to the right vehicle made aclicking noise. Dealerwas contacted.

On october 22nd 2004 i took my 2002 dodge durango in for routine service, an oil change, tire rotation etc. It had been riding rougher than normal and i had noticed that the tires were wearing unevenly so i asked them to look it over and see if there was anything wrong.upon examining the vehicle the mechanic found that both upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced along withthe control arm.my vehicle has only 38316miles and had to put nearly $1000 for somethingthat should not have worn out that quickly.had i not gone in for routine maintenance at that time something far more serious could have happened and to make matters worse i now needto replace my tires.

Noise and knocking sound coming from front end while driving, could also feel the knocking thru steering wheel.took vehicle to goodyear to have tires rotated and was told by them that all ball joints were worn and would probably fail soon, possibly causing and accident.called dealer and they said they would replace the parts under warranty (only 28,000 miles on vehicle), but couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't have to be replaced again in 30,000 miles. Contacted dodge and found out there was no recall on this problem and "there was not enough evidence of a problem to support a recall at this time", but that is not what i read on the internet.

Upper ball joint failure. Loud noise and decreased steering function. Recall on 2002 durango 4x4 but not on 2002 durango without 4x4. Perhaps same parts were used in both type 2002 durango. Recall should be on both. Estimate repair cost $1500.

I have 45,000 miles on my dodge durango.ever since i bought the car new i have not been able to keep the vehicle aligned.i have gone through several sets of new tires.i recently had the ball joints replaced.firestone tire dealership told be the wheel was ready to fall of dodge fixed it under warranty but made it sound like no biggie.my car was still making a bad noise when i turned and then it started doing it when i drove straight.i was then told my wheel bearings were completely shot...they were worst on the right side the same side that my ball joints were in the worst shape.i paid to have the wheel bearing replaced.then i took my car to firestone to get it aligned and they told me my upper control arm on the right side was shot and it was not holding the alignment.so no i have to have this replaced.i feel there is more than just ball joint problems with the durango and dakotas and i would like you to look into the whole suspension and front end and see what is going on with these cars...

The front end has always been loose and rattled.a part of the steering control arm has been replaced but did not resolve the sudden pulling in either direction - toward the right when changing lanes to the right or exiting the freeway, and the same thing when moving to the left, when the left front crosses the protion of the road were the lanes join.the left front rattles bad enough to feel in the steering and floor board, as well as being extreamly audible.the dealership states there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

When i purchased this car i had concerns that it had either been in a accident or a flood.i wrote to the attorney generals office, and asked to cancel my contract because i felt that i had been deceived. I felt that there weren't any other options for me, i was now stuck with a lemon, and i hoped and prayed that the car would last until i could afford to pay for it.when i purchased tires , i was informed that the ball joints had completelyshredded the insides of my tires on the front end, and had to be replaced immediately . I contacted a dodge dealership and was informed that the upper ball joints on the front-end were recalled, andreplaced in 2004,which was two years before i purchased the car in 2006.i feel that since dodge has had this car on more than two occasion because ofthe frontend, (the dealership which repaired the car after accidenthas lost their license to service dodge vehicles)i was regularly using this vehicle todrive my kids to school.i am a single parent, and can't afford to have their defect corrected.i am afraid to drive the durango long distance..i have written a letter of complaint with the chrysler office in michigan, but have not received a response.i have also attempted to reach the customer service line with no results.

Over a period of time, i noticed extensive noise in the front end of my 2002 durango.it got worse and was most prominent when striking potholes or changes in the surface elevation when driving or moving the vehicle.at 35,000 miles i took it in to the selling dealership for a check up. I was concerned about the ball joint situation, as it was quite a public affair. The front end noise became so loud that it sounded as if someone was striking the undercarriage with a sledge hammer.it was determined that all four of the ball joints, upper and lower, had failed, were worn out.they were all replaced at no cost to me, as the repair was still under warranty.i just wanted to report this, as the upper ball joints are not the only problem with this suspension system.i trust that the newer ball joints, not trw, were placed on my vehicle.if this is a repair that must occur every 36k miles or so, this will get expensive.thank you.

Front end makes a really bad noise backing up and then going forward. Sounds as if there isapopping noise going on and rippling effect such as..example if you put a close pin on a bicycle tire to get it to make noise. I've had it looked at by a dealer and a garage and both seem to cant any thing wrong with it .this has been going on for the last 3 years now....can it be the ball joints?

When making a turn there is a loud noise coming from the front suspension.

Visited your website to check on reports because we have a 2002 durango r/t which is ommiting a small constant sqeaking noise from both sides at the front of the vehicle and am horrified to read about the problems people have been having with ball joints. I am extremely worried now and want to know if i can get the dealers anything about it at no cost to me or if it is still at the stage where it has not been acknowledged by them and will not be until somebody dies as usual.the issue with the wiper motor i presume i can make an appointment with a local dealer and have this changed free of charge. I look forward to your reply, many thanks neill griffin .

I have a 2002 dodge durango 2 wheel drive that has 45000 miles ,the front end makes loud squeking noise,no matter where or what you are doing with it, just getting in it does this. Dodge checked balljoints and said they are fine, not to worry???i have had to have the front end aligned 5 times 3 times under warranty and it still is wearing out tires and pulling to one side or the other, again dodge says there is no problem.i guess when i,die behind the wheel then they wont have a problem!!!!! all i want is for them to fix this, no questions asked they dont have to admit to anything. Please help me.

After noticing strange noises from the front suspension of the 2002 durango, i took it to the delaership.thye could not identify any problems.over the next few months the noises have become more pronounced, and now seem to coem from every tire/ corner of the vehilce.took the truck in a second time- nothing could be found, dealer said they test drove the vehicle down the very same road that i hear the noises- like a loose mechanical connecoion, and a few squeaks, and rattles.will tak car in for third time 7/30/04- i hope they can fix the problem on this $35000 truck.

Suspension clunking/popping.

I have a 2002 dodge durango that is experiencing every problem that is known with dodge ball joints and brakes.apr-2004 i have been experiencing while driving, the steering wheel freezing while turning left and the steering locks at 20-25mph.i took the truck to greenfield dodge and informed them of the problems, also the problems with the front brakes.they noted that they "test drove the vehicle found the lower ball joints to have excessive play (.075).the service group informed me that this incident was not covered under my warranty.after several hours they finally decided to replace the part.they informed me that the car would be ready at 7:00pm that evening the car would be ready.after waiting several hours i made arrangements to get to the service shop, where they told me that they never brought the car in because "other things came up".i had no way to get home so i had to rent a car from the dealer ship.the next day i picked up the car and had to pay $30 for the rental and $108 for my deductible.regarding the brakes.i decided to have the brakes fixed at midas because i was not happy with the service at dodge.the mechanic at midas removed the pads and the caliber and informed me that the pins that go into the caliber were stripped.he stated that this is a common thing that they have seen with the dodge trucks.they had to tap and install a heli-coil.i picked up the car and had to pay $30 for the rental and $108 for my deductible. The entire fee for the brake service with the additional parts that included a heli-coil kit and service came to $292.13.the two day experience left a very bad taste in my mouth and wallet.

We operate a fleet of nine 2002 dodge durango suvs.these vehicles are used as paramedic emergency response vehicles.based on information we've seen in the national media, we've been paying close attention to the front suspension, specifically the ball joints.eight of the nine vehicles currently have less than 50,000 miles, but we have already replaced the ball joints and control arms on one of the nine (at just under 50,000 miles).the dealer reported that the original equipment was "close to failure."

Took my vehicle to dealer for routine service.when i went to pick up the vehicle, i was told that the ball joints were in such bad condition that they could not release the vehicle to me without replacing them because of the potential for an accident.they said that the replacement parts were backordered because of so many similar situations and that it might take a week or more until i received my vehicle back.the vehicle had roughly 20,000 miles on it and it was still under warranty.if this is such a common and hazardous problem, why no recall?

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango in jauary of 2007. I have not had any problems with it until i noticed that the truck was pulling to the right. I took the truck to a local service center and they informed me that the upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced. Had to have the upper ball joints/control arms & lower ball joints replaced on my 2002 dodge durango sxt 4x4under warranty due to failing pa state safety inspection. The vehicle had 27k miles on it at the time. The veh now has 40k on it & i'm experiencing a knocking noise coming from the frt end again. A private shop stated that the the lower ball joints have excesive movement & must be replaced again. I took the veh back to the dealer & theye stated that they will not cover them under warranty again due to the mileage. This veh is only 17 months old with 40,000 all hwy mileage & was never taken off road. This is unacceptable in my opinion & a severe safety issue if the ball joint does separate.

I own a 2002 dodge durango with 35,000 miles that has always been properly maintained. Dt*: the contact stated while backing out of a drive way at 5 mph, the steering was too hard to operate.no warning lights were illuminated prior to the incident.the vehicle was already subject to a nhtsa recall #04v596000 repair where the upper ball joints were replaced.the contact noticed there were no greasers to maintain the ball joint lubricated.the vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the ball joint should be replaced again to correct the problem.the manufacturer was contacted who coincided with the dealership.the contact expressed concern because the vehicle had less than 50,000 miles since the recall was performed and another replacement would not guarantee the ball joint's endurance.

I want to join the growing list of consumers complaining about the dodge durango upper ball joint problem.on april 15, 2004 i had to pay for replacement upper ball joints at a costof $468.16 - the truck had about 40,000 miles on it.dodge needs to do something about this problem now. When the mechanic put the truck up on the rack, the right front wheel wobbled very badly.she said "this is very serious."there were no steering problems and no warning noises, i just took the truck in to be checked for my own peace of mind.does the wheel have to fall off as a first warning.

2002 dodge durango:both upper ball joints replaced at 18,000 miles.dealer initially refused repair citing "no problem found".i had to prove the ball joints were defective by jacking the vehicle and demonstrating excessive play by moving the wheel that was off the ground.only then did the dealer admit the ball joints were defective and replaced them.you need to know there are more durango owners out here with defective ball joints.in my opinion, they should last 100,000 miles+, not 18,000.

When driving any speed, the consumer would hear a knocking noise coming from the upper/lower ball joint. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined. Please provide more information.

Upper ball joints are popping and cracking with every turn of my 2002 dodge durango.if they fail, it could mean the life of me, my husband and our 4 children.dodge dealership will not recall this and i don't have the money to fix it.it is clearly a defect in the durango.

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango in june 2002.my durango started squeaking and popping at about 17,000 miles.i have complained of squeaking and popping in the front-end.every time it was brought to the dealership for repair, they never found anything wrong and said they could not hear the squeaking noise, but as soon as i drove offthe lot there it was as sure as it was when i brought it in.i would tell them that they needed to drive the vehicle in order to hear it squeak.my durango got to the point where the front-end felt like i had every little control of the vehicle.not to mention it felt very unsafe to drive.it would also squeak without even driving it.all you had to do was get out of the vehicle and it would squeak.on october 2, 2003 i had no choice but to bring my vehicle in again because it was beginning to feel to unsafe to drive.at that time they discovered that both the right and left upper control arm ball joints had excessive play and needed to be replaced.

Upper ball joints checked, found over .500 vertical travel in both, retained defective parts.milage at time of repair was 80,000.due to lack of replacement ball joints, both upper control arm assemblies were replaced at a cost ofover $1000, paid by me.repair date was 1-24-2004.the defective parts were replaced with exactly the same unit.current milage on my vehicle is approx 106,000.i will need to replace the ball jpint assemblies for a second time within the next 12 months.when isnhtsa going to force chrysler to recall this dangerously defective vehicle and repair them with redesigned ball joints?

My 2002 dodge durango left and right upper ball joints wore out prematurely. They could not be fixed and had to be replaced at $625.82 at a dodge dealership.i understand this is under investigation for defective equipment.

2002 dodge durango premature ball joint wearing and upper control arm replacement.

We had an appointment to replace the tires on our 2002 dodge durango, 2x4 sxt.the firestone mechanic came into the waiting room and informed us that the passenger side upper ball joint was very bad and the drivers side showed signs of wear.this vehicle has 43500 miles on it.there is a recall on the 4x4 models of the durango, but not the 2x4 models.while their was no injuries or deaths involved, this is a potentially deadly problem and needs to be addressed for all the durangos.

I have noticed strange sounds eminating from the front suspension of my dodge durango since october of 2003.initially i assumed these sounds were from cold shocks since it first occured with the onset of cold weather.after seeing the story on cbs, i am now concerned about the ball joints.i would like to have the ball joints checked but i am afraid to have the dealership check them.

Nhtsa recall campaign 04v596000; daimler chrysler issued an upper ball joint recall. This vehicle was included in the recall, but there were no parts available in order to repair, which was dangerous because the front wheels couldfall off.

Ball joints were found to be failing and the entire upper control arms had to be replaced at 44,700 miles.

While driving 45 mph a loud banging noise was heard coming from the driver and passenger side wheels.consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic replaced both upper and lower ball joints.

Upper ball joints wear out excessively.

I own a 2002 dodge durango with 35,000 miles that has always been properly maintained. I have already had the dealer replace 2 worn ball joints last week, i've had the brake pads replaced twice, and one rotor on one side (in front) turned, and i am still hearing strange noises.i would like an investigation done on my vehicle, as i am driving my daughter and myself around everyday, and my factory warranty is about to expire.its obvious daimler chrysler is not concerned with saving peoples lives, as i have just witnessed the march thirdevening edition of cbs news with dan rather.i am rather concerned that the transportation safety administration has let daimler chrysler get away with not recalling these problems considering the large amount of complaints with these suspension systems.please help me and contact me.thank you.email me at [email protected] or phone me (858)220-0419.im not real sure what to do at this point.thank you. Signed, a concerned parent and driver.

Consumer received recall campaign 04v596000 concerning ball joint wear.no parts wereavailable.service manager dennis dzek.

I'd like to add my vehicle to the list of durango's that have had the upper ball joint replaced. My durango is a 2002 with 38,000 mi.very disappointing that my dealer never mentioned the ongoing problem. I have my vehicle in every 3 months for an oil change and not once did they inspect it. Now i am 2,000 mi over the warranty and no offers from dodge or the dealer to fix it so i had a local mechanic fix it for me.

Consumer tookvehicle to be inspected, and mechanic determined that upper ball joints were wearing out prematurely.consumer had the upper ball joints replaced.

I manage the fleet for the fbi jacksonville division and while servicing one of our vehicles, an 02 2-wd durango, noticed that the front suspension made a creaking noise when i lowered the vehicle back to the ground from our frame lift and inspection of the suspension revealed that the upper ball joints were worn out. They had about 1/4 inch of play and the vehicle only had 30,000 mi. On it. The boots were not torn nor has this vehicle been used under severe conditions. We only have one other 02 durango and it is a 4wd but at 22,000 mi. The upper ball joints are showing some wear/play. After having to actually jack the vehicle up in the dealer service lane and show them the play they replaced the control arms under warranty on the 2wd and i haven't taken the 4wd one in yet. This has to be a defect, either the joints didn't get any lube when manufactured or they have a problem with the materials to cause them to wear so quickly. I didn't get the old parts so i can't say for sure.i have not seen any recall on these, i believe there is one on the later models for a similar problem. When i take the next one in i will see if they will let me have the original control arms but i'm doubtful they will. I consider ourselves lucky to have caught this before it caused an accident.

Consumer receivedrecall 04v596000 for theupper ball joints, and to date has not been able to have the vehicle repaired since no parts were available.

Upper ball joint failure. Loud noise and decreased steering function. Recall on 2002 durango 4x4 but not on 2002 durango without 4x4. Perhaps same parts were used in both type 2002 durango. Recall should be on both. Estimate repair cost $1500.

While the vehicle was parked consumer noticed uneven wear and tear on all four tires.consumercontacted the dealer, andmechanic determined that the upper ball joints needed to be replaced.

Consumer received nhtsa recall 04v596000concerning ball joint wear. Consumer contacted the dealer for an appointment, andmechanic informed the consumer that the next available appointment would be march 31, 2004.

Consumer noticed that the right front wheel had a lot of play in it while the vehicle was lifted having an oil change performed. Vehicle was taken to a dealership to have the wheel inspected. Dealership indicated after inspecting thevehicle thatfrontball joints, left outer tie rod, and the right front wheel bearing needed to be replaced.

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango 2wd sport in aug. Of 2001.in july of 2002, i noticed that the suspension on the left was making noise and didn't feel right.it was found that the a-frame and ball joint on the left were failing and had to be replaced.thankfully, i caught this problem before the suspension failed completely.i was very concerned that a vehicle so new would have this kind of issue.thankfully, i had warranty coverage to pay for the expensive repairs.

2002 dodge durango right tie rod broke it wasfound that theright inner tie rob shaft threads were stripped and th eleft front tie rod loose at 25626 miles. Ball joints checked and they found play in both upper ball joints. Also knocking noise when turning steering wheel the rack and pinion was also found to have to be replaced replaced. We had to pay for a rental car that was not covered even though the car is supposable covered until 36000 miles??? car was in shop for over a week and parts were just 20 miles away in other dealership. Durango does have a problem with the steering why is nothing being done? thank goodness nothing happened while we were on the highway or else the car could have flipped.

Consumer received nhtsa recall 04v596000 concerning ball joint wear.after having the upper ball joints replaced, while driving, vehicle swerved on its own. Consumer had difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle.vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic dtermined that vehicleneeded an alignment.

While driving the vehicle consumer heard a noise coming through the from end. Vehicle was taken to the dealership, mechanic indicated need to be replace the ball joints at owner expenses. And consumer don't have the money.

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango.while driving 40 mph, the vehicle veered to the right and crashed into the guard rail.the contact sustained leg and arm injuries.a police report was filed.the upper ball joints and tie rods failed and caused the crash.the dealer and manufacturer were unable to explain why this occurred and stated that no recalls were available.in 2005, the vehicle was repaired under recall number 04v596000 (suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint), in which the tie rods and ball joints were replaced.the vehicle had 46,000 miles at that time.the failure and current mileages were 69,000.

Dt: the contact's wife had an accident.she lost control while driving around a curve in the road. She heard a popping noise coming from the frontend of the vehicle. The vehicle pulled to the right.she went off the road, hitting the side walk, blew the front right tire, and then hit a small embankment.the vehicle was towed to a body shop.the mechanic took the front right tire off, and the ball joint was broken.there was nhtsarecall 04v596000on the ball joint, and it was replaced about one month ago.

Consumer received recall 04v596000 concerningupper ball joint wear. No parts were available.service manager bob.

While making right hand turns consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front end.dealerinformedconsumer thatproblempertained tofront upper ball joint failure. Consumer had the vehicle repaired.

While driving 25 mph vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that both front upper ball joints needed to be replaced.

While driving heard a very loud clicking, popping sound coming from the front end on the driver's side. Consumer tookvehicle to the dealer, where the mechanic determined that upper and lower ball joints were worn out.

*sc

Nhtsa campaign 04v59600; daimler chrysler issued an upper ball joint recall. This vehicle is included in the recall, but there are no available parts in order to repair, which could be dangerous because the wheels could fall off.

Consumer receivednhtsa recallcampaign04v596000 for upper ball joints. When taken vehicle to dealer forservice dealer had no parts. Currently, dealer still has no parts available.called another dealership and they replaced ball joints the next day.

Recall campaign04v596000 concerning ball joint wear. Consumer had an appointment for march 4, 2005 forrecall repairs.dealer informed the consumer that the parts were available. On march 3, 2005.consumer was informed by the dealer that the appointment was canceled due to no parts, and that they did not know when the parts would be available.

2002 dodge durango upper ball joint excessive wear.

No obvious symptoms, just getting an inspection to renew license.mechanic says it failed due to bad upper right ball joint.he showed me the wheel and it would move sideways a full 1" back and forth!this joint is ready to fail completely and i have had no warning, no noise, no loose feeling in the steering, nothing.only 46,000 miles on vehicle, didn't expect a problem like that.thank god that missouri requires an inspection every other year!i will request the mechanic save the part when replaced.

With just over 16k miles on my 2002 dodge durango, i noticed my front passenger side tire wearing badly on the outer edge. Upon jacking the vehicle under the lower control arm, i found that the upper ball joint had excessive looseness when the tire/spindle assembly was shaken. I also found slightly less play on the drivers side. The upper controlarm/ball joint assemblys were replaced under warranty but i am concerned of whether this will happen again in another 16k miles.how can i be assured the dealer replaced the parts with an improved version?the worn tire due to this obvious defect is incidental damage according to the dealer and is not covered under the warranty and so i must replace it myself. I am not happy about this either.

While driving 40 mph front driver's side tire came off the vehicle, resulting in acollision.vehicle had to be towed.dealership informed the consumer of the front lower ball joint failure. Problem was not resolved.

I received a recall notice from daimler chrysler pertaining to the upper ball joints on my 2002 dodge durango. I tried to schedule this 3 times with my dealer. Brenner motors 1812-30 paxton st harrisburg pa,17104 717-232-4271. It has been 9 months since my first contact and they keep telling me they are waiting for parts.

While driving at any speed consumer heard a squeaking noise coming from the front of the vehicle.consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that both upper ball joints neededto be replaced.

While driving front end shakes uncontrollably. Dealer notified.

Consumer was informed while having other repair work performed, that the upper shock nut was loose.

Consumer stated that in january 2004 she heard anoise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer, who repaired the vehicle.then, again while taking a long drive, the consumer heard the same kind of noise. She took the vehicle back tothe dealer, who told her that they could not find anything wrong.but the noise kept getting louder and louder. Theconsumer took it back a third time. Dealer kept the vehicle three weeks, rebuilding the front end. This was in may 2004.currently,the consumer heard the same kind of noise.but this time theconsumer was advised they could not solve the problem.

*ph

Dodge, durango, 2002manufacturer's recall a08.dealer changed the entire rear end suspension. Which was missing from the nhtsa data base.

Rear left axel fell off my dodge durango and caused an accident. I was trying to get chrysler to give me a copy of the inspection that was done by a inspector hired by and was denied. This model of suv has had wheel problems in the past and i wanted to be sure it was not a defect. I was told the information is proprietary and i would legal documentation to get the inspectors report. The case #"s are: [xxx] and [xxx]. I also saved all emails regarding this problem. I can email them to you or mail.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

No specific events lead up to this failure. This is simply a defective, poorly manufacturer's part. I was lucky to avoid a serious incident in this case, others may not be. The main leaf of the rear leaf springs break at the front eye which is where it mounts to the frame. If this happens, the rear end is free to move back and forth as much as the shackle will let it, effectively allowing your rear axle to steer the rear of your vehicle wherever it may choose (read: very dangerous.) i replaced the leaf spring with the issue (the driver's side) with a dodge oem part ($175 for the part, 1.9 labor hours according to the dealership if i were to have them replace it.) i'm a very competent mechanic, so the labor hour inquiry was just for my records.upon completing the correction to the side with the failure, and during the test drive, i experienced literally an identical failure on the opposite side. Again, i was lucky to be driving slow and paying attention enough to notice the issue before it turned into a serious incident. I have both defective leaf springs in my possession. They are both off of the same vehicle, a 2002 dodge durango with just 60,000 miles. This vehicle has never been used to tow, haul, or complete any other strenuous activity. This is a very serious safety issue, when just one breaks, the rear end has enough movement to steer into the car next to you. If both were to break, this could very possibly lead to a chain of failures resulting in a serious incident.

Rear leaf spring (driver's side) broke off from the shackle causing the vehicle to wander to the right!

While driving 65 mph,the front of the vehicle became unstable. The consumer got out of the vehicle and discovered that the outside wall of the passenger side front tire was noticeably warned. The owner contacted the manufacturer who instructed the owner to have the vehicle towedto the nearest dodge dealer. The dealer refused to tow the vehicle to the dealership and would not render any further assistance.provide further details.

Was driving at low rate of speedand the spare tire fell from under durango the cable that holds it in place just broke. Had i been on busy highwayat 55 to 65 mph people could have been killed.there should be some kind of safety holding tire besides just the little cable.

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango slt in may of 2002.when i purchased it iasked if it has a recycle air option and was told it did, and was showed what itwas.it worked fine in hot or warm weather, but does not work when it is verycold.that feature is very important to me, and feel that they are misleading customers when they say it has recycle air, but don't then tell you that it doesn't work when the weather is cold.is there anything that i can do about this.i'm stuck buying this car for 6 more years.i probably would not have purchased the vehicle, had i known the recycle air did not work all the time.i previously had a honda and a mitsubishi that worked just fine in any kind of weather.i should have been told that, "it does not work when it is cold!"

Dash and under neath and steering colunm and speed cluster caught fire today.truck was parked and running.

Http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/10313/dodge/durango/durango-blower-motor-resistor-pack-harness-plug-melting this has been happening, i tried to get dealer to fix the problem with the resistor pack harness while i was still under warranty. Attempting several time , complaining about the wires getting too hot . I have replaced it my self once , this last time it too was getting hot and you can smell the wires melting . This could be a fire hazard . This is happening in many of the durangos , different years.

After starting my dodge durango and try to take it out of gear, the gear shifter gets stuck in park, it will not move. I have to keep playing around with it until it moves out of park. It does this off and on, just stated this about a couple of months ago. Today is 2/16/2020. Yesterday, i looked up the problem on you tube, and found out that i could take the boot off at the column by the shifter and spray wd40 on the gear lock to unstick it. I did do that and it worked. But what is making it do that to begin with?

Here is a list that i have sent to dodge chrysler customer service and 2 dealerships 1. Intermittent or delayed engagement at vehicle start up operation or engagement at 26-56 mph 2. Intermittent acceleration and shudder during torque converter.operation or engagement at 26-56 mph 3. Intermittent poor shifting quality?.. Idle shake, sag or hesitation.will not always ?downshift? while driving 26-54 mph. 4. Intermittent buzz and or clicking in reverse. (warm or cold) 5. Intermittent surging while driving 26-54 mph. (warm or cold) 6. Intermittent hesitation ?idle shake? sag when stepping on accelerator/gas pedal. 7. Intermittent harsh engagement of transition (warm or cold) 8. Intermittent noisy 3-4 upshifts . (warm or cold) 9. Intermittent delayed down shifts (almost like dropping it in 1st while going 35 mph) 10. Intermittent delayed up shifts. (transmission feels like its slipping) 11. Unexpected acceleration (warm or cold) 12. Loud popping noise while turning. . (warm or cold) 13. Transmission fails to hold in park/ park gear fails to hold!

Recall campaign'issued for2002 dodge durango, parts not available.*sc

While travelling down i94 at highway speed my 2002 dodg durango engine seized forcing us to coast to the side of the highway.the dealership said that this was caused due to lack of maintainance ie. Oil changes which is not the case as i did the maintained oil changes.in doing research i have found that this vehicle is prone to oil sludge.nothing has been done as of right now to rectify the situation.

Car would stick in park. In trying to move lever from park to d, the bracket assembly holding the gear shift lever has broken. This is a common issue on 2002 dodge durangos. I did not know the bracket was broken at first and after putting the car in park and getting out of the car while it was running, the car slipped down into reverse. I was already around to the passenger side when it started moving. Someone could have been killed!

Chrysler used inferior steel in the front brake rotors on 2002 dodge durangos causing premature failure and a serious safety hazard. I have the brake rotors for proof. The steel flakes off leaving large pits and causes severe braking problems.*mr

While towing a trailer downhill at 55 mph with cruisecontrol set, accelerator pedal went to the floor, consumer hit cancel cruise button 3 times, but vehicle increased speed, rpms went to 4500. Consumer then applied brakes, but that did not slow vehicle down.trailer began to fishtail, vehicle flipped, rpms were still over 4000. Consumer shut off engine, vehicle then caught on fire under the hood. No injuries, vehicle and trailer were totalled.

While pulling a travel trailer i got onto the freeway. As i have been pulling the trailer for a while now with this vehicle my comfort speed is around 45mph but will push up to 50mph maybe 55mph at the most. Anyways while entering the freeway i accelerated and as i got ready to merge i let my foot off the gas but the peddle stayed down and the vehicle continued to accelerate until around 80mph to 85mph when i finally got the peddle to release and stop acceleration. I quickly got off the freeway to calm myself as i was terrified i was going to crash. During this incident the first thing i did was tap the brakes lightly which did absolutely nothing and the carkept accelerating next i grabbed the floor mat thinking that maybe it was obstructing the peddle, it was not. Then i quickly used my foot to wiggle under the peddle and pull up multiple times until it finally released and came up stopping acceleration and luckily to my relief i did not crash although i had come very close had there been any more traffic or if i had got going g any faster i may not have been so lucky. This only happened the one time where i got to dangerous speeds but since then the peddle has started to stick two other times but this times it was much easier to get the peddle to release and i wasn't towing a trailer. I read that this happened in another model in freezing temperatures fro. The same manufacturer but couldn't find anything to it without freezing temperatures. I think it is a manufacturer defect that maybe affects other 2002 dodge durango i dony know if pulling the trailer triggered this or not as i said it has happened twice since and that was without a trailer attached. Definitely scary and should be looked at.. I don't have the funds to take it to a shop so i haven't had it professionally looked at yet

The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that one month ago the rpms increased to 2000 while the vehicle was in park and recurred when it was in drive. The vehicle accelerated without driver intent even when his foot was on the brake pedal. The contact was advised that the throttle sensor needed to be cleaned which temporarily corrected the failure.chrysler was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 99, 687.

Hood insulation missing overheating the paint .back door allows emissions from the exhaust .roof panel does not fit at the windshield . Passengerdoors slam too hard. Vent air strong smell like carbon dioxide. Gas tank hoses unsecured and too close to the moffler .
