While driving at any speed vehicle shut off intermittently.
On my 1992 dodge dakota (v8 5.2l with at, 4x4) the engine quits intermittently, sometimes while parked idling and other times while driving. It does it without warning, as if the key is turned off. Sometimes it starts right up again and other times it will have to crank for a while before it starts. I've had it to 2 different mechanics and they can't determine the cause. All sensors have been replaced as well as a new fuel pump and the problem is still there. Truck has just over 50,000 miles on it.i've had it for about 5 years and the problem started about a year ago.it's very dangerous especially when it happens in traffic or on the interstate.
2 issues-the power train-i don't think it was ever fixed as my gearshift lever indicator is not in the gear it indicates-can this still be fixed under the recall-2nd problem-i can be driving down the road and the truck just shuts itself off without warning-sometimes it will restart after sitting a few minutes but yesterday i had to have it towed with my 74 yr. Old mother-i have been on the freeway and had the shutdown occur-i believe this is a safety concern-i am not the first owner but the guy i got it from told me about this issue after i had bought it -ithought the fuel filter may be plugged and had a complete tune-up-still the problem continues-is there any other complaints on this vehicle-thanks barb

The circuit panel on dashboard has an electrical short. Noticed battery was very low. Vehicle would stop for no reason. Took to dealer at least 4 different times for electrical problems. Mechanic finally discovered ashort in the wires & had it repaired.
Vehicle went in reverse after parking, crashing into a house causing damage to house and to the bumper and fender of vehicle, while fixing radio, consumer came across the wiring in the dash and found a fastener had fallen out which wouldn't allow vehicle to really go in to park also affecting the radio.

The door assembly on the driver-side failed when the lower hinge collapsed into the door. This caused the door to be misaligned, preventing the latch from engaging latch bolt.the fuel gauge reads 1/4 shortly after fueling and will stay their until the tank is almost empty. The radiator core fins disinegrated and/or fell out of the radiator, causing the engine to overheat.
Radiator developed a leak around the top, where the top and body come together.

The vehicle was experiencing symptoms of the technical service bulletin # 09-07-97(timing chain), consumer was not aware of the bulletin and the vehicle broke down and was repaired due to timing belt failure, consumer is requesting reimbursement for repair and feels the repair was misdiagnosed. *mjs

Distributor shaft broke, also oil pump shaft bushing wore out.
The engines have high failure rate of bushing for oil pump drive shaft.this causes excessive wear of distributor, which will break off the end of the rotor, causing instant engine failure, loss of power steering assist.the is no warning, so is very dangerous to pull over in heavy traffic (i was very nearly rearended).this failure is listed as a known problem on internet sites such as car point and the repair parts on on national backorder.if a inexperienced driver has this occur, and does not correctly respond serious accidents will occur.dodge does not have a repair policy on this.i am an engineer, can give more much more detail.
The contact owns a 1992 dodge dakota.he heard a chatter noise and the lifter needed to be tightened.the mechanic stated that the lifter failed in the cam shaft which affected the engine. The dealer stated that therewas no recall for this year, make, and model vehicle.the failure and current mileage was 164,000.
On days over 90 degree temperature the engine will rev very loud at first start, while vehicle will barely move. The dealer replaced the fan clutch twice and rebuilt the transmission, however the remedies did not help.this problem has also occurred while at traffic lights, when driven at low speeds then kick into normal speed, make noise, and then stop.*scc

Had been driving vehicle for about 45 minutes with air conditioner on ,turned off engine to make 3-5 minute stop,turned back on engine, drove vehicle for about 2 blocks and noticed smoke coming out of vent , turned off engine ,in less than 7 minutes,vehicle was completely on fire. Vehicle was a total loss.insurance claims fire started because of defect in motor to the blower which caused this part to overheat, resultingin a fire.
Purchased truck new,tire blew out and when to look for the spare tire there was no spare tire there .ttconsumer states the cable that holds the spare tire broke and he has no idea when it happened.

15 days after puchasing this vehicle it caught on fire while i was driving it.the fire destroyed everything under the hood but the metal engine parts as well as melted part of the dash & carpet on the interior.after prying open the hood & dousing the flames completely, the fire department told me that a fuel line leak had caused the blaze.apparently some fuel leaked from the line near the fuel injector assembly on top of the engine & an electrical short caused the fuel to ignite.thankfully i was alone when this happened because the cab filled w/smoke before i even got pulled over & i have 2 small children that would have been no small task getting them out safely.the damage was estimated @over $2000 because of the cost of the wiring & computer, not to mention the cost of labor to put it back together again.i only had liability on the vehicle, so my only hope of getting this thing fixed w/out losing my tail is ifthe manufacturer will stand behind its product and fix it.my brother-in-law only recently informed me of the nhtsa web site, or i certainly would have reported this earlier. Please help any way you can,my family & i would be most appreciative.thanks.

Pulled into alley in downtown hanover.truck on slight incline to the rear.put transmission in park then vehicle started rolling backwards.
The contact owns a 1992 dodge dakota. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection of a failure which involved the vehicle abnormally slipping from park and into reverse. The failure caused the contact to crash into another vehicle. The contact stated that he had experienced the failure since the vehicle was purchased. At highway speeds of 55 mph and over, vehicle tacks at about 1800 rpms, on a flat road, vehicle will suddenly downshift and tack at 2800-300 rpm, consumer states it happens in and out of cruise control with a constant pressure on the accelerator, it will also downshift dramatically at low speeds.

I was backing out of my garage on my way to a job interview, when i realized i forgot something . I drove back in the garage, put the shifter in park and i stepped out of the truck. No sooner had i gotten around the truck door when the truck just started backing up by itself. I attempted to jump back in to stop it because i did not want the truck to hit somebody . But the momentum was to quick and the door slammed against me hitting the left side of my body,both my knees were knocked together,causing bruising and some swelling. I also had a small cut on my right index finger when the door hit me,it pushed my arm back and my finger hit my front teeth. I have found out that there is a recall for this very same problem(park-to-reverse). This is the first time since i've had the vehicle in my possession that this has happened. I called a dodge dealership in b.r. And they told me this vin number was not included in the recall. The truck was bought used so i do not know if the previous owner had a problem with the park-to-reverse. Since the accident, i have not been able to work and have been suffering with a lot of back, leg, and knee pain.

The transmission started to leak heavily and slow to shift iinto gear,further investigation revealed burned fluid in the transmission after having recently been changed and serviced. Also an excessive amount of metal filings in oil pan and on filter.it was reported to me by 2 transmission repair facilities that dodge had had a problem with the planetary gears not getting enough oil due to insufficiently sized access holes to the planetary gears. I am trying to find out if dodge had any type of recall on this problem or assistance in this area.

Was told this was between consumer and dealer. 27 dec 2000 went to another dodge dealer who found linkage was bent, this was repaired.
The vehicle was taken to dealer for recall repair 00v-106, after repair the vehicle began experiencing difficulty shifting gears which it had never experinced prior to having the valve replaced, the vehicle was returned and the manual shift valve was replaced again and the consumer was charged for repair, consumer request reimbursement for the second repair.nlm

This truck has a 5 speed manual transmission. The truck will start in gear without having to depress the clutch. From what i can find out there was no switch put on this model to prevent this.
The consumer complained of transmission jerking and missing, dealer said it was fixed or that no problems were found. In 1994 the vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse, since the door was opened it was torn off as it passed another vehicle.nlm

While driving about 30mph applied the brakes and the truck did not stop, the pedal did not hold. There are two lights on now; one is abs light, and the other are the brake lights. These lights were not on untill the truck was involved in this accident because the brakes would not hold. A representative from chryslers special investigations stated that after a physical and electronic inspection, the brakes were operating properly.

The paint is peeliling off.i called the dealership when it first happened and they siad that this was the first they heard of any problems and said we had to pay for it ourselves. Now the majority of the paint is gone and rusting throughout the whole vehicle.

The door assembly on the driver-side failed when the lower hinge collapsed into the door. This caused the door to be misaligned, preventing the latch from engaging latch bolt.the fuel gauge reads 1/4 shortly after fueling and will stay their until the tank is almost empty. The radiator core fins disinegrated and/or fell out of the radiator, causing the engine to overheat.
Body sheet metal breakage where lower door hinges are welded, both sides of vehicle. Repair shop advises typical on dodge dakota and door could possible fall off while driving.cost to repair each door approx $400.

Paint is peeling due to defect in manufacturing process. This problem started in a small area on the engine hood, and has increased in size. Also, the same problem is occurring with the roof top and left rear panel. Many other dakotas of the same year are having the same problem.i have located other complaints regarding peeling paint on the web.
When i took the truck into the dealership, i was still under extended warranty. Istead of doing something about it, they blamed it on acid rain. When driving around you see the same make, from the year 91' to 93', peeling in the same spot. I really feel that this is not due to acid rain, it's due to the paint job in these models. No safety defect listed in summary.

Recall 871 was performed on 21 june 2000 and when compleated transmission would not shift into overdriv ( 4th gear), also cruise control would not work. On 10 july 2000 truck was taken back to dealer and transmission inspected and could find nothing wrong. Manufacture called and they would due nothing about problem.

Pe95-041; auto-transmission will down shift for reason unknown. Was told this is normal performance. At highway speeds of 55 mph and over, vehicle tacks at about 1800 rpms, on a flat road, vehicle will suddenly downshift and tack at 2800-300 rpm, consumer states it happens in and out of cruise control with a constant pressure on the accelerator, it will also downshift dramatically at low speeds.
