We received a recall notice (d17) on a 1999 dodge caravan, for the clock spring.the airbag light was not on.we took it to the dealership, martin dodge in bowling green, ky, to be replaced.they replaced it, and the airbag light came on so they replaced it with another.everything was replaced except for the last bolt.when they replaced the last bolt the air bag light came on.so they told us it was ok to leave the bolt out or we would have to pay $500.00 to fix it.the repair they did, evidently, caused a short in the air bag module, and they said it would be okay to leave the bolt out or we would have to pay for the repair.we refused to pay considering the van was okay when we brought it in there.i called the service manager, and he said we would have to pay for the repair.then, i called the crysler manufacturer.next the service manager called me back, after the servic e manager was contacted by his zone representative and told me they would pay for half of the repair.since my last time speaking with him we tried to blow the horn only to find out now the horn doesn't work either.when you try to blow the horn the airbag light comes on for about 10 seconds and then goes off.why on earth should we have to pay for this damage, evidently they have caused.i tried to call the chrysler manufacturer back and customer service would not transfer me to the people in detroit i was transferred to originally.she said the representative had made his decision. The recall was not completed, in my opinion, when the last bolt was not installed.isn't this governed by the federal government???we never had trouble with this before.

I was viewing your website for complaints regarding 99 dodge caravans. I just had to have my van in the shop due to a problem which seems to have been a dodge problem for several years now.. The clockspring in my van has gone out, which causes my airbag no longer to work, my horn does not work, and my cruise control no longer works. They want to charge me 260.00 to replace this part. Under my own investigation, i have found that from 96-98 minivans have all had this part recalled because of all the problems i suppose they are having on this part. And now from 2000 - 2001 dodge trucks are now having a recall done on this same clockspring part! my question is why is there not a recall on this part for 99 vehicles especially considering all the previous and current problems that keep occuring.. You would think an airbag problem, would be a huge safety concern for any vehicle. And especially on dodge/chrysler products given their history with problems concerning this part!

Airbag light intermittently comes on whenapplying the brakes, and also when driving down the road. Contacted the dealer.

There was a recall on dodge, caravan, 1998 for a flaw in the airbag, which caused the cruise control to release automatically. Consumer felt that recall should extend to dodge, caravan, 1999.

In our 1999 caravan, several months ago, the cruise control and horn began to intermittently not work.then the airbag light intermittently would come on while driving and while parked.at this time neither the horn, the cruise control and sometimes the windshield wipers will not work at all.the airbag light will still come onand off intermittently.we called the dealer's repair service and they told us that they thought it sounded like the clock spring mechanism.upon taking the vehicle in for physical inspection/ diagnostics, an opencircuit was detected and we were informed that the clockspring indeed needs to be replaced.however, at this time the necessary part is backordered (on a national basis) and is not immediately available.the technician told us that if we were in an accident the airbags would not deploy.since we drive our minivan primarily with our entire family on board (ie, myself, my spouse, and 4 young children) i am greatly concerned that we are not able to have this problem immediatly fixed.upon viewing your website i have discovered that an investigation into this has been started but did not find out the status of this investigation.if these parts are "nationally" backordered, that should tell you that there is a big problem out there.if even one of those vehicles is in an accident and the airbags will not deploy, there is severe risk of phyical injury to the driver/passenger and possibly additional passengers in this vehicle.please continue your investigation and request a recall.isn't saving a life that important?we also are being asked to pay close to $300 for the diagnostics and installation of this clockspring (if we can get one), for something that appears even to an amateur detective to be a design flaw and a very serious one!please help!

The clockspring wont work for my car only the cruise controlso said the dealer. I would feel bad selling this car to a family ,cause what if they were killed. I couldn't deal with that. The day that happened was on my daughter 16th birthday. I had to stop everywhere all day to put water in the radiator just to keep it cool enough not to ruin her day. I hate hot days,i fear the rainy days, i cant see at night cause my headlights on the left side burned out and the covers has a glass over them.

Vehicle experienced anelectrical defect. Whileraininginterior lights failed. Also, there wasa brake problem. While traveling 30-35 mph brakes were applied, pedal went straight to the floor, and vehicle hit another vehicle in front. Insurance co. Had vehicle towed so that they couldinspect the defect.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan. The contact stated that the entire instrument cluster failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that the wiring harness was rusted and would need replacing. In addition, the front strut tower assembly was also found to be completely rusted.the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle could not be aligned and was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

My parents van. A couple of days before this happened i tried to start it and all it did was click. I tried to start it again and it started right up. I turned it back off and tried to start it again, same thing happened. All it did was click. I then tried to start it again and it started right up. We drove to town with no further issues that day. The next day it started right up. We drove about eighty miles to my sisters house. When we came out to leave in the evening. I started the van and it started right up,but it was making a rattling noise that i could just barely hear over the engine noise. I turned the van off,but something was still running. The starter was still engaged with the engine and running. I turned the key back on and the engine started again. I turned the engine off again and the same thing happened. The starter stayed running. I attempted to drive two hundred yards to my sisters garage to get pliers. I realized i probably did not have enough time to get to her garage before the starter burnt up. I ran in the house leaving the van running. By the time i got back to the van and got the hood open the starter was starting to smoke and make a real bad winning noise. My wife got a fire extinguisher. I pulled the negative battery cable. By the time that i got the cable off the starter was already burnt up and starting to catch fire. Their was so much smoke. I have know doubt that if i had not gotten the battery cable disconnected when i did that the van would have gone up in flames. The other bad thing was that it was sitting next to my sisters house and that would have gone up in flames with it. I am just glad that it did not happen when my seventy five year old parents were driving it,because i believe that the van would have defiantly caught fire and they would not have known what to do fast enough. This year make and model needs to be recalled before someone gets killed. Thanks.

Vehicle was parked when it caught on fire due to electrical problems, claim 22-v529-255.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan.while the vehicle was parked and the engine was being warmed up, the passenger side air bag deployed without warning or an impact.since then, the heater and power windows have stopped functioning.the cause of the failure has not been determined.the current and failure mileages were 150,000.updated 10/06/09.*ljupdated 10/08/09

The vehicle experienced the same defect with the clock spring as stated in recall number 02v 293 000but the model year and vehicle identification number were not included. *nlm an electrical short started and was replaced permechanic.the horn stopped working due to the air bag.the consumer was informed the same part malfunctioned in the 1996, 97, and 98 dodge caravan's. *scc

While driving the vehicle, the instrument panel shuts off without warning and for no known reason. Dodge told us that it was a short in the wiring in the dash that caused the computer to shut down. The technicians insisted that the problem would be impossible to find, especially since it could not be replicated on demand. This has continued to happen periodically, most recently in january 2014, when the computer went out, shutting down the instrument panel and the wheels on the passenger side of the vehicle. The driver's side continued forward, which pushed the vehicle into a curb, flattening two tires and damaging those respective rims. Although no one was injured, had there been a vehicle next to the van, as opposed to a high curb, the defect in the vehicles wiring and computer would have caused a collision. There is never any warning prior to the electrical and instrument panel going out. There is no known trigger that causes this problem. It is not triggered by going over a bump, driving at any particular speed, stopping or accelerating. I wanted to report this, because a witness (who happened to be a police officer) to the most recent incident advised us that this is a known and common issue in dodge caravans built in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan.while driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions the electrical instrument panel gauges failed to operate. An authorized dealer stated that card in the instrument panel was damaged. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. The failure and current mileages were200,000.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan. The contact stated that the clock spring on the air bags broke on the vehicle in may of 2010 and it was replaced under campaign number 04v480000;air bags.the contact stated that all gauges go out on the dashboard when the failure occurred. The contact feels this is a safety issue because he does not how fast the vehicle is traveling and he does not know how much gas is in the vehicle. The contact stated that the part is supposed to be under a lifetime warranty, but the part had broken on the vehicle twice in three months. The failure mileage was 100000 and the current mileage was 103000.

Consumer states that engine makes loud noise and it idles erratically, vehicle has stalled while travelling 60 mph, on one occasion, dealer found that a piston had failed, however problem still exist.brakes squealed, dealer cleaned and sanded pads and rotors.vehicle shook at speeds above 70 mph, dealer balanced and rotated tires.consumer smelled strong odors through the ventilation system.passenger side sliding door inoperable.alternator belt came apart.accelerator rattles.vehicle experiences deceleration.carpet buckles.

While driving on the road under normal conditions, the alternator bracket broke along with the adjustment bolt, causing the belt to come off.the mechanic explained that he type of material that the bracket was made of was a weak material, very brittle.*la

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55mph the check battery light illuminated.the light illuminated for ten minutes, and then the engine stalled.the vehicle was pulled off the side of the road without incident.a new battery was installed; it stayed charged for two days then failed.the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealership, but the contact stated the alternator caused the batteries to fail.

While driving on the interstate under normal conditions, the alternator bracket broke and the adjustment bolt, broke. This is the 2nd time, was replaced with oem parts just over a year ago. Was replaced at the dealer, while under extended warranty coverage.*la

While driving alternator bracket cracked, causing loss of steering and brake power. This was as a result of a design flaw. Bracket is very brittle, a bolt also had fallen out, as reported by dealer.

In addition, the vehicle horn was inoperable. The contact received notification of a recall campaign (nhtsa campaign id number: 04v480000: air bags) which she believed was directly related to the failure. The recall letter advised a new clock spring would be installed in the steering column. The vehicle had not yet been taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The contact stated the vehicle had previously been involved in a crash but there were no injuries. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 147,750.

The horn and the cruise control failed to operate when the air bag warning light came on. Upon having the air bag clock springrecall 04v480000 repairsperformeddealership indicated that the horn failure was not related to the defective recall part, and charged the consumer $100.00 to have the part replaced.

Horn has stopped working.air bag light came on.we have been told to get this fixed immediately due to safety reasons.already we have paid $35.99 for them to tell us it is the clockspring assembly.it will be at least another $165 (not including the postage charge for them to order parts) to fix it.why is this not a safety recall?

I am currently having the same problem reported under nhtsa action number rq04001.i have a nonfunctional horn, cruise control and a air bag light.

While driving at highway speeds, the horn had completely gone out.phscc

Airbag light is on, cruise control and horn stopped working.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan.while driving 5 mph, the brake lights failed to illuminate and the horn no longer worked.also, the air bag light remained illuminated.the vehicle has not yet been diagnosed.the purchase date and powertrain were unknown.the current mileage was 74,000 and failure mileage was approximately 73,500.

Air bag light came on and stayed on whilevehicle was being driven. However, speed control/horn assembly, and heat system failed to operate.vehicle was serviced, and clockspring was replaced.

A couple days before the horn completely quit working. The air bag light would come on then i honked the horn and it honked different than normal, not a full honk. The next day the air bag light stayed on and when i went to honk the horn it didn't work anymore, the air bag light stays on all the time now.dt

Horn does not work, has been repaired twice. Dealer notified. Please provide additional information. Ph

Consumerpressed on horn and it did not work. Also, air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.consumer will takethe vehicle to dealer for inspection.

While driving air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.following that the horn and the cruise control failed to operate.consumer contacted the dealer, and mechanic determined that the clock spring needed replacement.consumer called in to make an appointment.

The clock spring malfunctioned. As a result, air bag sensor light stayed on, and the hornfailed. Consumer was concerned that the air bags will not deploy upon impact.

Air bag light on and horn, cruise control not working.dealer said its my problem & will cost $300+.i know there have been numerous complaints of same prob. & other year models recalled for same problem. The dealer told me the air bag will not deploy in a crash.

1999 dodge grand caravan vin: [xxx]this van is a lemon from day 1. I have contacted chrysler, owner of landmark dodge in ga, mediation, arbitration, consumer action line, and any other person that would listen. This van has quit on me at least eight times. Sometimes on rural roads. Several times on a major highway. The last major incident occurred on father's day with six family members inside the vehicle. There was no warning before it quit. It would not startafterwards. We were on a busy hwy 19/41 in jonesboro. Several other times, i lost my speedometer, and could not accelerate. I have had check engine lights, leaky doors, inoperable window motors, halted intermittent windshield wipers, sluggish locks, etc. I wanted to keep my vehicle. However, it is very unsafe. I cannot afford to trade it in. That was not my intention when i purchased it.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On dec 8,2000 my wife, four children and myself were in springfield mo, approx 80 miles from our house shopping at the mall. When we finished our shopping and left the mall,we were in congested traffic at approx. 30 mph the van shut off without any type of warning or indication of a problem, the abillity to properly steer the van was lost and i luckily came to a stop at the red light almost hitting the vehicle in front of me.on dec 30 we were on our way to springfield mo, we pulled off of the interstate to use the restrom in the mcdonalds.while pulling in the parking area the van once again shut off without any type of warning or indication that there was a problem.once again i lost all controls and instrumentation to include the loss of proper steering ability.i almost hit the parked car to the right of me.chrysler has refused to replace my vehicle or to refund the purchase price, so here i am with a $ 20,000 unreliable vehicle that we are afraid to drive.i am currently a senior non commissioned officer in the u.s. Army, i've been on active duty for 18 years, this is not an attempt to defraud chrysler or an attempt to get out of a debt, this is an honest situation that is happening to honest, law abiding, hard working americans, whom strongly believe in our country and our way of life.

The ignition key will not turn. Unable to start the car. Not an electrical issue. The key physically does not turn. Happened completely randomly. Other people have suggested tapping the end of the key with a rubber mallet, but i do not trust this fix. I now have a family vehicle that i do not feel comfortable bringing my family anywhere far away in. Transporting my family was the only reason i bought a minivan.

The key sticks in the ignition and fails to turn. The consumer has to pound and play with the key in the ignition to release it.the dealership indicated that is due to a bad ignition cylinder and it needed to be replaced. They also indicated that this is a commonfailure with this part. Please provide more information.*ph

While driving 70 mphvehiclewill completely shut down without warning, this problem also occurs while vehicle is stopped at traffic lights. Dealer replaced the iacmotor andcrankshaft sensor which did not correct the problem.

While van was parked on a flat surface, with the ignition off, gear in park, van rolled backwards about 100 feet, crashed through a fence and hit a mobile home beforing coming to a stop.owner has been experiencing problems with key being stuck in ignition, and key was stuck at this time. Van is being held by dealership.please provide further details.

Twice this year my ignition broke and i had to hire a locksmith to repair it. The last time the locksmith told me there is a manufacture defect with the ignition.

We own a 1999 dodge caravan.three weeks ago we took it in for a check up at a certified mechanics shop.they informed us the tensioner was bent and serpentine driving belt needed replacing.we authorized them to make the repair.we have owned this vehicle since 1994 with no incident.last monday we drove through standing water and the serpentine belt was thrown.we lost power steering not to mention that the driving belt powers everything else for the vehicle.thankfully we were only a short distance out of town and were able to drive back to the mechanics shop.they informed us that indeed this is a problem dodge minivans have.in the last 2 days we have gone online and found many web forums where this has happened to 1,000's of dodge/chrysler owners going back as far as 2002.dodge has never issued a recall for this known problem and potentially deadly flaw in their engine pulley design.we can buy an aftermarket new designed tensioner and belt at our expense manufactured by 2 separate companies, but dodge offers nothing to consumers who bought their vehicles thinking they are safe.we would like to see dodge/chrysler acknowledge this defect and recall these potential death traps off the road to fix this negligence on their part.just because people are not dying in crashes because of this (or are they and we just never find out this was the cause) doesn't mean they should not be responsible.

Corrosion of left forward strut tower.during scheduled oil change, saw extensive corrosion on left shock tower in engine compartment. The corrosion appears to have developed from inside the shock tower and only became apparent recently. Corrosion is affecting the outboard half of the shock tower and affects two of the three bolts holding the strut to the tower. Took the vehicle to the dealers body shop. They said there is a factory kit to fix this problem, but they were not impressed with its structural strength or appearance. Suggested replacing strut tower as a better option at the cost of $1300.00. Said dodge would not provide any warranty because the vehicle has 116k miles. Asked service manager if they had seen this problem before, said they had repaired a few, and this defect seems always to be on the left side of caravans.he also said that he had not seen any strut towers fail, but researching this web site there have been numerous failures and constitutes a safety defect, the manufacturer needs to correct.

Serpentine belt slipped off of pulleys after driving over a wet road. Vehicle is a 1999 dodge caravan, 3.0l v6, 4-speed automatic. Within the past two weeks, this has happened two times, both in wet weather. The same issue occurred on a 1996 dodge caravan, 3.0l v6, 3-speed automatic, twice in the same two week period. The idler and tensioner pulleys were replaced on both vehicles with oem-equivalent parts after the first problem with each, yet the problem persists. The belt on the 1996 caravan also shredded at highway speed during dry weather during this period. When replaced, the belts on both vehicles ride off-center on the pulley for the power steering pump.

While driving a noise was heard coming from the engine. Dealer found that timing belt broke.the idler pulley made noises andthe consumer found that the system needed to be updated.the update parts were the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, timing covers, water pump, two drive belts, thermostat and the oil pan gasket leaked. *scc

Serpentine belt comes off pulley.occurred four (4) times within the last 12 months.twice during wintry conditions of less than three (3) inches of snow and twice during normal rainfall.most recent occurred june 29, 2008.

I have a 1999 dodge grand caravan that the serpentine belt has come off of numerous times, because of a manufacture defect. Whenever the tension wheel gets splashed with water the belt pops off. You immediately lose power steering, it is so dangerous!! the car overheats. I have talked to many mechanics and this is a well known problem with that particular vehicle. I have spent much money to have it fixed and not to mention the stress. I have also researched this on the internet and found that they have recalled these vehicles in brazil because of the same problem.

Warranty 36,000 miles/3years. Dropping van off for routine brake job, van died in garage parking lot, temp guage had no indication anything wrong, tailpipe smoking, , had police stop by to see, garage looked at engine fly wheel fell off and head gasket melted. Car only has 54,000 miles on it. Contacted chrysler nothing they would do. The garage i have it at is not more than 5 minutes from a dodge dealer, they would not even send anyone to look at the engine to agree or disagree what had happened. Cannot get the car towed because the engine is apart and will cost $800 to put the broken engine back in the car and that again to have dodge take it apart. It is amazing that the temprature guage would not indicate that my engine had gotton so hot that the head gaskett melted and the fly wheel fell off. This car had regular oil changes ect at walmart. They never indicated fluid problems.

The oil pan is rusting out and will require replacement.

My 1999 dodge caravan (2.4 engine) is experiencing oil loss. I just had it tuned up about 5 months ago and it is stilllosing a considerable amount of engine oil(1 qt/500 miles; normal-according to several dealers).mechanic found problems with pcv system and replaced yellow restrictor. Charged $98. Recently had oil change. Ten days later, oil is black and broken down. Oil level on dipstick is down to half.

I recently took my 1999 dodge caravan to my mechanic because of an anti-freeze leak.the mechanic found that the water pump needed replacement and suggested that the timing belt be done at the same time, since it was due to be replaced.i agreed to have the timing belt done.in the process of replacing the timing belt the mechanic found that the belt tensioner was faulty.he tried ordering a replacement part and discovered that the existing belt tensioner was no longer available and that it was replaced by an upgraded belt tensioner kit.my complaint is if dodge found the need to change the design of this part why was it not made a recall?this problem ended up costing me an additional $245.00 in parts and labor to have this new belt tensioner kit install, not to mention a week without the car because of the part availability.

Intermittently air bag light and the oil light illuminated, andvehicle made a chiming noise when starting.the lights and the chiming continued for 5 to 15 minutes.dealer could not duplicate or determine the problem.

Our belts sips off during wet weather"five times we replaced the "s" belt and the tensioners, waterpump, overheating our 2nd yr of owership.now the 3rd yr of transmissions leaking, the abs light came on while driving at 35mph w/children in car ,starting to brake causing to slow way down in traffic and made a chime sound, the horn went off and it got hot fast causing the car to shut down. Thank god there was room to get over. All the lights were flickering all over the dashboard. The car just leaks everywhere, water, oil, trans. Something needs to be done about these cars. I cant even get mine smog because i have to keep unplugging my battery because now we have a short in the electrical system somewhere. I brought a lemon.....oh yeah! i called the dealer, they cant replace the cruise control unless the abs light stays on. I hope i don't die cause the airbags wont work because i have a electrical shortage. 2 batteries were replaced, alternator too.

Serpentine belt comes off while drivingon wet roads. I replace pulleys belts several times this has happen since the van ran out of warranty. Finally i took to chrysler and they put double pulleys on an a double side belt cost was around $300.00. Chrysler knew of this problem. This happens in winter time also.

The engine was running really rough.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they determined that oil was getting into the radiator.the engine light did not illuminate to warn the consumer of the problem. *sc

Dt: contact stated something was defective with the radiator and transmission. The coolant from the radiator went into the transmission and destroyed the transmission. This happened about two weeks ago. She took the vehicle to a mechanic and he changed the radiator and tried to flush the transmission, but the transmission was to be rebuilt.she called chrysler and they said they could not do anything. The mechanic told her he had changed manywith the exact same problem.

While driving, smoke entered the cabin which was caused by the head gasket blowing out and leaking oil onto the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.the mechanic replaced the head gasket.the manufacturer redesigned an upgraded the head gasket.the van had 4 cylinders, and 2.4 liter engine.the fumes and smoke made the consumer and his wife sick.(sinus and coughing which existed two weeks after) *scc

Consumer took vehicle to the dealer because engine was not working properly. Dealer stated, head gasket broke, vehicle was out of warranty.

Engine head gasket is defective there is oil leaking from vehicle. Contacted dealer, and the dealer has tightened up some of the parts. Please provide more information.

Engine head gasket failed at 44,000 miles. *la

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan.while driving 15 mph through puddles in the road, the serpentine belt detached from the vehicle.the failure has been occurring for six months.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop after the first failure.once the vehicle was repaired, the mechanic stated that this was a common failure in this vehicle model.after the second failure occurred, she conducted research and discovered a tsb.the contact believes that there should be a recall on her vehicle.the current mileage was 107,000 and failure mileage was 105,000.

Engine pressure built up due a faulty pcv valve, causing oil to leak , also, crankshaft andvalve cover to blow out. Dealer has repaired vehicle.

The vehicle stalled without warning.

My dodge caravan 99, stalls.i can be turning a corner, putting on the brake, slowing down and the car stalls. This has put me in very dangerous situations.my van has been at the dealership twice now.i had to ask for a monitor to be put on the engine to detect what was happening. This was not offered to me, but someone i work with had a dodge van with the very same problem and they had a monitor put on theirs. Currently the van is stalling, i am pushing the button on the monitor hoping the problem will be detected. This is the third time the van has been in for this problem that they can not figure out. As someone i work with had a dodge van, an older one, but same van, with the same symptoms it makes me concerned that my van has some kind of defect. As this is my only car, and i can not afford a new one at this time i am forced to drive it never ever knowing when it will stall and i will loose control as i loose my power brakes and steering. Incredibly dangerous.

We were advised that component was redesigned due to the number of problems with the head gasket seal breaking and leaking oil.

Head gasket and transmissionmalfunctiouned. Vehicle has only 74000 miles. Problem started also immediately after he purchased vehicle.

I was told by the independent mechanic that first diagnosed the leaking head gasket that he had repaired quite a few of these and thought there might be a recall.we took the van to the dealer and although the car is only 8k out of warranty agreed to only pay for part ($5 gasket) we would have to pay for labor ($600). If one mechanic at a small shop has repaired more than 1 or 2 head gaskets on a 1999 vehicle i can only imagine how many other people have had similar problems.

Blown head gasket at 48,000 miles/not covered by warranty??!?!

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan.the contact stated that when the vehicle makes contact with water, the serpentine belt, which controls the steering, detaches.the manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection.the dealer stated that they will charge a service fee to diagnose the vehicle.updated 6/4/09 updated 06/09/09.

My dodge caravan has 47,000 highway miles on it and is two years old.i just brought it in for an oil change and was told that it needs a new head gasket.my mechanic tells me that this is a recurring problem with these vehicles and that he has seen at least twenty other cases of this problem in cars with less than 50,000 miles.i am certain that this is worthy of review for a recall if it can be assumed that every mechanic has seen twenty such instances.

Oil leaking at head gasket at 43,000 mi (3yr 36k warranty)wanted a second opinion as i could not believe it.mechanic who looked at it then wasn't sure but kept an eye on it.just brought it to a new mechanic now have 60,000 miles on it.new mechanic says he has seen this problem multiple times in this model and the neon.we bought this car brand new.upondelivery it had a dent which had to be repaired on my time, we had a/c repaired twice, power train control module replaced(kept stalling while driving),and visor broke, all during first 6 months.now this.chrysler says there are no recalls or extended warranty for this.i plan to keep fighting this one. *nlm

I began to notice oil underneath my 1999 dodge caravanon my concrete driveway.it appeared to come from the valve cover.the vehicle mileage was only 47,000 and the van less than two years old. Allstar dodge service told me it could be the valve cover or the head gasket which he advised could cost around a thousand dollars to repair.my caravan was out of warranty (3yr/36,000 miles) i took the van to a mechanic. He repaired the valve cover gasket and notice no other problem at the time.two months later the head gasket failed.i contacted allstar dodge service whom advised me that there were no problems with thecaravan and no recalls.i took the van back to my mechanic to have the head gasket repaired.my mechanic told me the engine in this van is the same 2.4l engine that was recalled in the dodge neons 1997 with faulty gaskets.he stated that i may want to investigate the problem.i have since found complaints about both the valve cover and the head gasket problem.i pray others with the same problems would file complaints so that something can be done to remedy these problems and before someone gets seriously hurt or dies.

Head gasket started leaking in october 2000. Currently,it needs replacement. The dealer had already replaced the head gasket.

I had the van in for a state inspection and the mechanic stated that the serpentine belt and the tensioner arm needed to be replaced.he stated that he could tell just by the sounds that the van was making.i have since heard the same sounds from several vans that i come accross.if this is such a known problem with the tensioner arm freezing up and destroying the serpentine belt, shouldn't dodge redesign the tensioner arm and effect a recall to replace it.

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling various speeds in wet conditions, the battery light illuminated and the steering wheel locked up.the vehicle was towed to multiple independent repair shops, who determined the serpentine belt slipped off and the belt was replaced.there had been no inspections into what caused the serpentine belt to slip off.

Serpentine belt has fallen off on many occasions. Usually when it is wet out. I have had this vehicle to the garage about 12 times in the past two months and spent alot of money trying to fix this. I know there is a tsb on this issue. I feel since it is a safety hazard to be driving and lose all control of your vehicle that there should be a recall issued for this problem. I live in the northeast and it is impossible to avoid wet weather.

1.vehicle: 1999 dodge caravan serpentine belt slippage when road is wet. 2. The belt slips off the pulleys, steering power is lost and i get stranded in the middle of busy streets. This is a safety issue!(i wonder if i would have made it out alive if i was driving on i-95!)on the internet there are 100s - if not 1000s - of stories/complaints: wives stranded in the snow with children, elderly people stuck in a street in a rainy night, and caravan /voyager owners changing belt and pulleys 2 or 3 times, without the problem being corrected.it seems that the chrysler corporation has willingly ignored this problem since 1996!i am reading of misaligned pulleys and motor mounds.this issue needs a resolve and a recall!and.... There is a fix!!! please check gates part #38379k and goodyear part #49215k.so, there is a problem which is totally ignored by chryslerin a final note, i am going to buy "the fix" in order to be able to operate my vehicle with no fear of getting stranded somewhere in a rainy day or night.i believe that chrysler corporation should reimburse me for the repair and replacement of parts - not my fault- their screw up!and just to let you know that i called chrysler corporation to find out if they would reimburse me.i called the washington, dc office and my called was routed to a call center in india (!).i asked to be transferred to a supervisor at the corporate office in the us, which i was.i spoke to a supervisor, who told me "i am sorry.your vehicle is out of warranty, and chrysler corporation will not re-imburse you for any repairs pertaining to this problem."i went out today with my husband's ford aerostar, to check the roads after tropical storm fay (won't dare take my caravan) and there were dozens of caravan like mini vans stranded in the streets of our city.suppose we had evacuation orders for flooding or a hurricane emergency.....please do something about this!

Whenraining the serpentine belt completely disengages. The vehicle will losepower. When the belt comes off the vehicle will jerk to the left. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, andshe was told that there was no solution for this problem, and put the belt back on. There isa manufacturingproblem with the dodge caravan. The most common factor is when water touches this belt it will come off.

When passing through a channel of water going in a direction serpentine belt came off.owner had to forcewheel to keep from colliding with a fence.also, brakesbecame inoperative once water had settled in.please describe details.

While driving through a light rain/slush mixture the car lost power steering, etc.consumer identfied that the serpentine belt had came off.this seems to be a common problem with late 90's dodge caravan's.i have a relative who had the same problem 2 weeks earlier. Dodge does have a service bulletin related to this, but it does seem to be some type of design flaw that needs to be addressed since it relates to the power steering, and nearly every other vital system.

While driving, the serpentine and power steering belt slipped off, which caused the consumer to lose control of vehicle's steering.

99 dodge caravan in repair shop to have 4th or 5th belt tensioner & 7th serpentine belt replaced loss of power steering rendered vehicle dangerous, barely avoided accident dodge customer service denied any knowledge of problem with this part until, after second call & demanding to speak with manager, i directly asked: 'are there any publicly available notices, warnings, recommendations, etc, related to the 99 dodge caravan and serpentine belts or belt tensioner'.finally, this 'manager' told me that there was a technical bulletin (available to repair shops, not car owners) which stated that the vehicle should not be driven in heavy snow (deepest snow it's ever been in was 3-4").if the co. Had no idea, then why is there a factory-made part to correct it? and why is there no recall?why is this information so difficult to get from the company, as their customer?this seems to be a failure both on the part of the company (for hiding, not repairing this serious flaw) and the government (for not forcing a recall, thereby putting the general public at risk of injury or death).

Dt:the contact stated that the drive belt came offon four different occasions.each time it occurred after a heavy rain while driving through a puddle.he had the belt replaced at a local service dealer.the next time it occurred they put the same belt on again.the third time they told him that the drive belt needed to be replaced.he had it replaced again.he is unsure of the exact cause of the slipping. The belt came off again.the vehicle is at the dealer now.

The contactstated while driving at 30 mph in rainy weather, he drive through a puddle and within moments, several electrical components on the vehicle failed. The window defroster failed, the battery warning light and the temperature warning lights illuminated. The contact exited the vehicle and found that the serpentine belt had fractured from the vehicle. The contact was able to locate several complaints online pertaining to the failure and contacted the dealer to inquire about recalls. There was not a recall for the failure. The contact was concerned about the safety risk involved in the failure. The failure and current mileages were 172,000.

I had pulley/arm tension replaced three times , on that third time i then found out there was a bracket made to correct the problem.but during the times of all these repairs (in the past two and half years of buying the van) i have had many breakdowns causing the van to be very difficult to manage(almost hitting a telephone pole once) no power steering or brakes and the battery quickly died out, the last two times my 16 year old was driving, not safe for an inexperienced driver! there were also several broken serpintine belt during this course also. I work in a hospital and have at timesbe called in any hour of the night and where i live that can be in the middle of a blizzard, actually it truely happened to me during the blizzard of 2005 here in ri (i have repair statements to verify the dates) its sad to know the when cars truely have problems consumers cant just be notified just for safety sake. I was told at the dealership that the information about the bracket was found on a service bulletin (? dodge)and the same weekend the secretary at the service desk told me three other minivan were brought in due to their serpentine belts falling off. My neighbor who has a 1998 caravan has also replaced his tension/arm pulley. I never realized how much trouble one part could cause. But please just one more thing my van also was just worked on again , due to a component in the radiator the works with the transmission, well it ruptured causing my van to breakdown, i needed a new radiator and my transmission flushed.($$) hopefully this has not caused any harm to my transmission. Could it be realted to the previous problems?

Serpentine belt replaced due to excessive noise.

Feb 2001 serpentine belt tensioner arm broke tearing up the serpentine belt.arm replaced and new belt installed.no determination of cause given.dec 3, 2001 belt jumped off pulley's/tensioner-dealer states no problem found, belt in good condition, probable cause-water intruded tensioner and cause belt to walk, re-installed belt.dec 28, 2001 belt again slipped off, took to dealer who said problem was water intrusion causing the belt to slip, replaced the belt again though.seems to me that if the dealer is telling me that the problem is water intrusion, and i've heard this problem from other owners of this vehicle/year, shouldn't they engineer a fix before someone gets killed on the freeway?

Serpentine belt comes off while drivingon wet roads. I replace pulleys belts several times this has happen since the van ran out of warranty. Finally i took to chrysler and they put double pulleys on an a double side belt cost was around $300.00. Chrysler knew of this problem. This happens in winter time also.

During a rain the serpentine belt fell off causing loss of power steering, water pump and other equipment. This is a serious safety issue, and dodge has a tsb out. But they are making no effort to correct this flaw.it seems that anytime water gets on this belt it will come off. How many crashes is it going to take before something is done to remedy this situation?

You can also hear when the compressor door opens and closes and turn it on and off.the brakes make a knocking noise when you apply them in slower traffic.the transmission slips in traffic around 40 to 50 mph and then when you begin to accelerate again.

My 1999 dodge caravan has plastic headlights covers. The left side is so bad it has reduced the out put by half. I had a accident that caused the right plasticon to be replaced. So i believe any one who has not replaced these expensivecovers has lost there out put of these & not know it because they can not compare it against a good one.

My suspension bottoms out on me no matter where i am at. My front seats will not move back and forth at due to the handle mechanism breaking. My headlight assemblies do not put out the right beam of light the it needs to be able to see properly at night. I need your help in this matter please.

Headlights, as designed and as checked for alignment by the dealer, are aimed too low and do not cover enough area in front of vehicle for safe operation.driver has to use high beams in local driving, with constant need to dim for oncoming traffic, where other cars can use only low beams.in country, at highway speeds, even high beams do not illuminate far enough.

Vehicle is experiencing a problem with the headlights. The headlight switch was replaced. It happened a second time and the switch was replaced again. The headlights went out again for the third time. This time the repair will not be free because the vehicle is out of warranty. The headlights went out again. Dealership will not do anymore than replace a switch. After 4 failures, the lights are still operating intermittently. *phdodge approved a new switch at no cost and had been made available about three years ago but a local dealer installed an old switch in 2000, 2001, and 2002. *scc

Since november of 2001, following dealer oil change, i began to experience episodes of strong raw fuel fumes, especially after putting any amount of fuel in van. Many witnesses document fumes. 1999 dodge caravan with approx 195,000 miles.plastic fuel line attached to gas tank experienced spontaneous rupture and spewed gasoline onto muffler.i noted a trail of liquid coming from vehicle when backed out of drive.stopped and looked under vehicle to see gasoline pouring out and onto hot muffler.car turned off in middle of the street and emergency exited vehicle to begin removing contents in fear of explosion.dodge reports no recall and to replace fuel line entire gas tank needs replacement at cost of $530 for just the part.this could have been a catastrophic incident if i had not noted the liquid trails before the muffler heated up more.when moving the car out of the street, the driver door was damaged as the engine was off and control was difficult.

Your latest information concerning the crash of a 2001 dodge caravan and the fire problem due to a cracked component.since purchasing my dodge, we have experienced numerous strong gas smells in the cab of the car.we have taken it to 4 dealers and they say they can find nothing.this strong gas smell does not occur all the time, but intermittently.we are concerned for maybe a fire occuring.where is this strong smell coming from?i called the chrysler assistance number and was told it was my word against the dealers and they would do nothing.i have serveral witnesses to the strong gas smell.we remain concerned, especially since no one will do anything about it.we just wonder if there is a similarity to the recent problem you have reported. We want this corrected, but have hit a dead end every where we turn.we understand it is hard for a dealer to find the problem when it does not happen all the time and there is no specific pattern as to when it will occur. But we don't know where to turn and we are very concerned about a fire in our car.to us, this is a dangerous situation.if you need to call before july 29, we will be at the following phone number until then.864-638-7338.after july 29, we will be at the number given in this questionaire.thank you.

Over the period of one year my dodge caravan 1999 se stopped engine cut off while going speeds of 75 miles an hour on highways. The last time i was almost hit as it was rush hour and on a very heavy traffic area bridge. I brought it several times to mechanics and they can not find out what the problem. I reported it to chrysler and htye did not respond. When i told my story about how scary this was to someone else they said that another lady had the same issue and no one would find hte problem. I had kids in my car when it stopped once it was scary to be going 75 and the car die just die. It would not resart at first so of course a mechanic took advantage of me charging me 600 dollars for a new starter and new battery. Guess what it happen after these new items were replaced. Again chrysler the manufacturer no response. I decided to trade in my car it was too scary shouldn't someone investigate this thing is ee caravans everywhere and i feel sorry for the children someone may not be as lucky as i was three times. An inexperienced driver would not have been able to stop like i did at that speed. I was lucky but had the experience to stop.please investigate this problem before someone does die.

Within 30 mins. After picking up my van from the dealer (cerritos dodge) for the fuel rail recall. I noticed the smell of gas,( i thought was o.k. Since fuel rail had just been replaced) and i looked at the dashboard and noticed gas gauge fluctuating moving back and forth, and smoke started. Coming from under hood.i called [xxx] (cerritos dodge service dept.) whom i had been talking to about my van when it was in shop. I called him to inform him about the gas/gauge. He told me to go to nearest gas station. I did. After that, i took car home, parked it for the remainder of that evening. The next day, same thing (smell of gas)and fluctuating gas gauge), within 15 minutes of driving to get oil changed, fuel bell started ringing. I called mr. Richardson, he said to bring van in, but.he didn't know if they would be able to check it out that day.at that point i was frustrated, because they had the van (3) days more than they promised. Bottom line, is van was again checked out, now he says its the fuel pump. Prior to the fuel rail breaking. I had no problems with my fuel system. I was informed of another recall with the fuel pump with the 1999 dodge grand caravan ( but, was told not with my model.) that clearly is a form of biased discrimination. And, yet my 1999 van has the identical fuel system problems. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan. The contact stated that the fuel gauge failed to work properly. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 194,875.

The contact owns a 1999 dodge caravan. While driving at approximately 60 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact stated that the air bag and cruise control warning indicators were illuminated continuously. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 134,000.

A part in the rear latch assembly broke and i was unable to use my rear door until the dealer ordered a new part and installed it. My contention is that this part should not have cost me $143.95 because the part did not break from abuse and the vehicle is fairly new. I can only hope that does not happen again because the part that broke was plastic.

Intermittently while driving over bumps the vehicle sliding door opened unexpectedly which may cause injuries.problem happened 6 times.dealer cannot determine the problem.please provide further information and vin#.

The rear door on my 1999 dodge caravan will not open from the outside unless you lock and unlock it a number of times using the remote device. Physically unlocking the door from the inside will not open it; in an accident, the occupant can not rely on this exit; the dealer does not consider inability to open the door as a safety or warranty item and charge me $83 to fix.

Dt*: the contact stated that the right hand side of the hatchback liftgate support device failed and came crashing down seconds after the contact's pet was let out of the parked vehicle. The vehicle was not equipped with a remote locking device.the alleged failure was mechanical.the consumers husband did the repairs himself.

While traveling approximately 45 mph the hood on our 1999 dodge caravan flew up, obstructing vision of driver.

While driving 65 mph the hood latch failed, causing it to fly up andshatter the front windshield. Vehicle was towed.the hood latches failed due to abnormal wear.

Frame is bent/ rearaxle is off by 30 degree, andtransmission is going out, causing the vehicle to stall.there is a loud knocking noise coming from the vehicle. Also, rear tailgate will not open.dealer can't determine the cause.

The dealer replaced the emergency brake years ago. The parking brake didn't always hold, especially on a upgrade. Then it may or may not release on its own. *ph

Both parking brake cablesdisconnected, leaving vehicle without any parking brakes.

Tachometer failed.yh

The speedometer in my dodge van flicks on and off, on and off.much of the time while driving, i don't know how fast i am going.and the on/off behavoir is very distracting.it always draws my attention from the road.this vehicle is dangerous.i am trying to work with dodge to make repairs, or to repurchase the vehcile, but dodge is very uncooperative.repeated warranty service has not succeeded.my complaint letter to chyrsler coroporation went unanswered for two months.finally the zone manager, myron abbott, called but this was useless.i have tried to get more help, or a repurchase from mr. Abbott, but he avoids me now.always he will 'check and call right back.'but he doesn't.

The vehicle does not have a lower gear shifting mechanism.yh

Preparing to exit a parking lot, the gear shift was accidentally caught by my sleeve and pulled down to the "drive" position. The vehicle was not running, but it began to move forward. Being on somewhat of a slope, the vehicle pulled onto a busy street. I grabbed the wheel to turn the van away from traffic, but it hit and scraped against a high curb, flattening 2 tires, damaging the wheels/rims of those tires, bending a strut and other damage to the suspension (i got a repair estimate from firestone, which totaled over $1,900.00). I didn't think it was possible for the gear shift to move without having my foot on the brake, but move it did and so did the van. Other than being frightened and shaken, we were fortunate that no physical injuries occurred. However, had i not had that split second reaction to turn the steering wheel, there would have been a very bad collision with at least two vehicles driving down the busy street. Wondering why the gear shift was able to move without the car running and without my foot on the brake, i did some research and found that chrysler knows about this grievous omission and did not want to spend the extra $9.00 per van to install a brake shift interlock. I'm incredulous! i intend to write to chrysler in hopes of being reimbursed for the damages sustained to my vehicle, but first wanted to report this incident to the appropriate agency.

1999 dodge grand caravan had recall in 2004 to replace a clockspring, but dealer avoided this after customer's 3 or 4 tries in 2004. On 06-16-2010 when the vehicle was put in reverse, (all [xxx] broke loose!) the motor hit high revolutions, the steering wheel and the brakes immediately "locked" up and could not be moved as it traveled backwards and finally hitting and totaling 2 vehicles at over 50 mph.note: since about 2007 a brake light has been on and the cruise control was not working.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Last week my wife was coming home from work when she thought she ran over something. She said that the steering wheel shuttered and it scared her a lot. I'm just thankful she was not on the interstate when that happened because it could have put her life, as well as others, in danger. She was turning a corner after the light changed for left hand turns as was only traveling around 25-30 mph. When she looked she did not see anything in the road. The caravan suddenly stopped. She got off the road. She was able to restart the car and make it home, about 5 miles. I had the caravan towed to a transmission repair shop. They told me that this problem is very common with dodge caravan's with an engine rating of 3.1 to 3.8 litter and the 41te transmission. I need the car so i had it fixed for $2,265. F dodge (chrysler) knows about this problem, why is it still happening to owners of this vehicle?

At any speed vehicle will come to a complete stop without warning.consumer stated vehicle will not shift into gear.once another car almost rear ended into consumer'svehicle.

The transmission locked up, and caused the rear tires to lock up, which made it difficult to control the vehicle.

Transmission failure at 96,000.

Consumer stated while vehicle was shifting from park to reverse automatic transmission failed. Vehiclewas towed todealership, and mechanic replaced the transmission atconsumer's expenses of $2,200.

While driving withcruise control activatedvehicle will not downshift when going up hills. Dealer cannot identify or correct the problem. *ml

At 72,000 miles my 1999 dodge caravan needs a new transmission due to a pinion in the pinion shaft coming loose and tearing through the transmission casing.over $2400 worth of work was required.no injuries, but i lost control when incident occurred and was able to drift to the grassy edge of a rural road.

This is the third dodge i've owned that the transmisson has failed. I know this has been problem but i thought it had been corrected but i guess it hasn't. I'm having it repaired by an independent garage and would like for dodge to pay for it.dt

The mechanic informed the consumer, the transmission failed.

Other people may have similar problem with transmission failure.at 5000 miles i find this unacceptable.chrysler 's customer service leaves alot to be desired.

While driving at 35 mph consumer heard a loud clunking sound and the speedometer dropped to zero.also, vehicle would not go out of first gear. Dealer examined the vehicle, and found that the transmission sensor was burned out.this problem occurred again in december 2003, and the dealer repaired the sensor again.

Needed to replace input/output transmission sensors.not only have we had this done but a number of 1999 caravan users we have spoken with have had this problem.

The consumer stated when the vehicle came to a stop, the transmission slipped out of gear.the vehicle went forward even though the gear was not completely in drive.

I bought a used 1999 dodge grand caravan se in 2002 with 28000 miles.the original mfg warranty had expired so we bought extended warranty.from the first week this car gave us trouble ending with a major accident due to gear shift.on the day of the accident while driving the car the gear shifted on its own from drive to lower gear.5 min later the car when parked on my driveway moved from park to reverse on its own.since i was out of the car i was run over by the car causing severe injuries but i was lucky that i did not die.the fatality rate is over 50% in such accident but i escaped with rib fractures, internal blood loss and extensive bruising.

While driving at 45 mph the steering pump failed, consumer lost the control, but was able to pull out of the road. Vehicle was taken to independent repair shop, mechanicdeterminedsteering pump had to be replaced. Also, at 50,000 miles, transmission failed while driving.*la

On april 18, 2002 i took the vehicle into the dealer for them to investigate a noise which sounded like metal on metal.service drove my vehicle and after hearing noise for himself, they put it on the rack and said "we tightened a few things" (on worksheet stated "checked engine") and said to come back if additional problems.on the morning of may 2, 2002, i returned home from an errand and parked my van in the garage.later that day i went outside and noticed drippings in the street in front of my home into my drive and garage.backed the car up a little and discovered a pool of pinkish fluid.neighbor came over and verified that it was transmission fluid.i called dealer and was told to drive the vehicle to their service department.i did so.left the vehicle.they called me later in the day and informed me that my van needed a new transmission.the explanation was that "differential pin came loose and went through case.not rebuildable."so, the transmission was replaced.i have written to chrysler and the local dealership is aware of that; in fact, last week, district people were to have been here, supposedly to meet on this; however, i have received no information from them regarding the resolution of this.

The transmission has gone out on my 1999 dodge caravan twice.the first time was at 35908 miles and only 17 months old.it was the speed sensor.the second time was at 40,100 miles and less than 20 months old.i was told the torque converter came aprart!!this transmission had to be replaced and was not covered by dodge because it was outside of the 36,000 manufacturers warranty.i have had numerous problems with this less than 2 year old car, but the most worrisome has been the transmission failures because they have occured while my wife was driving alone and in heavy traffic, leaving her stranded.

Speed sensors have failed 3 times in the last 12 weeks causing the transmission to shift erratically and violently. All dash gauges also go dead intermittently. Vehicle has been in the shop a total of 5 times in this same timeframe. (july 21- oct 16) chrysler has been contacted but refuses to do anything further till the vehicle breaks again. 1999 grand caravan purchased new , transmission failed with approx 10000 miles repaired, still not right dealer unable to duplicate problem. Car can lunged forward with very slight pressure on gas pedal taken for routine oil change by independent station, found transmission fluid leaking said poss seal worn at 17000 miles.car has very unusual acceleration patterns i am the full time driver of this vehicle and after two years i still am unsure on how to handle it when accelerating to highway speeds it is very unpredictable. Another problem we have seen with it is the brakes. We had it back to dealer at 10k miles for noise from back wheels, they told us it was a loose car seat , what do they think we are stupid. The whistling has been constant , even after telling them to look into it this time they said the hubcaps were bent and the noise was coming from that, they never checked the brakes ,low and behold, we now need a$400 plus full brake job. I am so fed up with this disaster of a car.any info on bulletins in.

Transmission failed twice during the warranty period.dealer informed me of unknown cause of the problems (transmission sensor) to go bad twice, but was happy to replace it for free (suspicious, nobody does this for free unless there is a problem).notified dodge since it was nearing the end of waranty and filed a complaint.

At 15,000 mile check i requested the transmission be checked, it felt as though it may be slipping.service department found nothing wrong at that time.transmission has to be totally replaced in 1999 caravan with only 43000 miles on it. We have never towed anything with the van and are shocked that it needs a new transmission with so few miles on it. Surely there must be a defect in the transmission for it to have gone out so soon after the warranty expired.

Frame is bent/ rearaxle is off by 30 degree, andtransmission is going out, causing the vehicle to stall.there is a loud knocking noise coming from the vehicle. Also, rear tailgate will not open.dealer can't determine the cause.

Consumer states there were several transmission problems during the warranty period, there was a noise present when putting vehicle in gear and it also felt sluggish, there was a shake in the front end due to the transmission not being adjusted correctly, the torque converter, output sensor, input sensor, and shift kit had to be replaced due to the torque converter coming apart, causing metal to go throughout the complete transmission and valve body.

Driving 20 miles an hour under normal conditions. My transmission fell apart in my 1999 dodge grand caravan se 3.3 automatic transmission. There is a pin inside the transmission that simply breaks apart. You receive no warning of the defect. When this happens your vehicle seizes and stops. I was lucky i was close to home. When the pin breaks it destroys the case as well. In researching this defect i found out it also happens in 1999,2000, and 2001 dodge caravans, plymouth voyager and chrysler town and country vans. This breakage can occur at any speed. It seems to happen at around 100,000 miles. Again in my research came across a person who replaced the transmission 5 times in one year and another who was going 60 miles an hour when it happened luckily they gained control of the vehicle and no one was hurt. There are still a great many of these vehicles on the road and present a danger to all occupants and even those who are next to them on the road when all systems shut down. You must purchase an after market built case that stabilizes the pin and helps prevent the metal fatigue or the problem will continue to happen. Chrysler needs to offer some assistance to owners as this is 2000.00 or more repair. They do not acknowledge the problem and it seems to be very common.

Vehicle has trouble changing gears. Also, has problems accelerating.when consumer keeps trying to makevehicle accelerateit will shut off. Contacted dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything.

I am a licensed day care provider who transports several small children daily. My vehicle is a 2000 dodge caravan. On tuesday, my transmission failed without warning while i was on the interstate with five children inside. I was horrified. My transmission needs to be replaced, which will cost upwards of around $2000. I didresearch on the internet and i have discovered some disturbing facts. Chrysler vans from 1998-2002 have a reputation of having this type of failure happen. The cause is a differential pin that shoots through the casing of the transmission. There is nothingthe consumer can do to prevent this. Newer models of the caravan 2003 and later have the same transmissions but they now have metal plates installed which keep the pins from breaking through the casing. I tried to get assistance from chrsyler directly, but according to their customer service department, there has been no problem with these transmissions. I asked them why then were there several stories on the internet of customers having the same problem that i just experienced. They replied that there is nothing they can do to help me. My transmission did not wear out, it failed. The differential pins shot out and broke the transmission casing.if you call locally or across the country and try to locate a used transmission for 1998-2002 chrysler vans you will discover that the majority have the broken cases caused by the differential pins. Thus, they recommend replacing with a new transmission that has the corrected plates inside. I also discovered that at lithia dodge, they have on an average 2 or more of these vans coming in with the same defect. They charge the customer to replace a transmission that they know has a defect, yet they do not take responsibility for it. There are millions of chrysler's on the road. It is a safety hazard to have these vehicles on the road that can fail without any prior notice.

The transmission pin broke and went through the casing.

While driving, the vehicle stalled out.the dealership indicated that this was caused by a pin in the automatic transmission which was coming a loose, and had blown a hole in the transmission.phscc

Engine races, the transmission whines and changes gears while in the park position.the consumer also complained of another vehicle she owns a 1996 chrysler cirrus. The key lock was replaced 3 times and it accelerated on its own.

Transmission went out on our 1999 dodge caravan while traveling 50-60 mph in a remote area.this is the second transmission problem i have had with this car.the first was a sensor that went bad, and now the entire transmission had to be replaced.the van has been with the dealer for 5 days.

After startingengine andmovedtransmission, itwill not work, onlyfunctionsin reverse. Had taken vehicle to dealer, and they couldnot explainwhat happened.vehicle still atdealer.

The air compressor can be heard every 3 to 5 seconds while the vehichle is being driven.it started at 200 miles the dealership wont even look at it, they just keep saying its normal.an independant said that it should not make that much noise. You can also hear when the compressor door opens and closes and turn it on and off.the brakes make a knocking noise when you apply them in slower traffic.the transmission slips in traffic around 40 to 50 mph and then when you begin to accelerate again.

Complete transmission failure on a 1999 dodge ge and caravan vin# [xxx] at 67,723 miles.no help from chrysler on this problem, because of high mileage.transmissions should not fail this soon.we had a transmission failure on another grand caravan with vin# [xxx] that had 37,491 miles on it that was mostly covered by them.these vehicles appear to have defects and should be covered by chrysler and built to last.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

While driving through the neighborhood the rear end pin came loose in the transaxle and cracked the housing.lost all the transmission fluid and vehicle became inoperative.vehicle had 49,992 miles and dodge would not repair under warranty.they dealer recommended a new transmission for almost $3000.i had it rebuilt with replacement parts at a transmission shop for $1600.

Transmission failed at 41,500 miles.differential pin keeper broke which did major damage to the rest of the transmission.

I was driving down a major road (m-59) and my minivan made a popping noise (my initial reaction was my tire blown) and came to an abrupt stop and engine cut off. I was able to restart and pull into a parking lot near by.i noticed transmission fluid leaking(which left a trail and a decent puddle when stopped).after speaking to 6 different transmission repair shops they all stated that there is a pin that is know to slip and shoot out causing the gears to slip out that has been know with the 99 dodge caravan .two mechanics believed there had been a silent recall because it is the most common problem with the transmission and dodge was aware of this problem.after reviewing online it seems that this is the biggest complaint.there is a bracket that now fixes this problem.i am grateful what happened didn't cause my 6 yr old daughter and i to get into a collision.i talked to my local dealership and the lady, samantha, i talked to was aware that this issue does exist.i don't understand why the consumer has to experience this expensive, dangerous event and be left to bear the cost to fix this.all of the repair shops state there are brackets that are designed to prevent this from occurring again, but it's something that shouldn't occur in the first place! there was no warning that my transmission was about to falter.the consumer shouldn't have to bear the financial consequence of a faulty design.if there is solution then dodge should have/or be fixing this not the consumer!

The van was taken in 2 times during the warranty period.they attempted some repaires.the second time they said they could not find the problem, but they would document it incase there were problems later..i contacted the manufacturer who stated that they new there was a problem with that model year, but there was no recall so they were not going to do anything about it. Head gasket and transmissionmalfunctiouned. Vehicle has only 74000 miles. Problem started also immediately after he purchased vehicle.

Differential pin came loose and blew a hole through the transmission.failure caused van to break down on the freeway.transmission was completely ruinedand would have had to be replaced.possible starter damage as well.quotes for repairs were around $3,000, so we decided to junk the car.it was only 5 years old with 62,000 miles at the time.'99 dodge caravan.

The transmission does not downshift out of overdrive.at 43-47 mph, the car lurches and acceleretion is impossible. The first incident occured on april 14 when the car would not accelerate up a hill. Everytime the car was slowing down from 50 mph while going up a hill, the car would lurch and acceleration was impossible.the car came back to the dealership the week of april 23rd but the dealership could not reproduce the problem. A monitor was placed on the car over memorial day weekend but nothing showed up. Again, i brought the car in but the dealership could not reproduce the problem.june 18th i drove with a mechanic and reproduced the pattern within ten minutes after leaving the dealership. The chief mechanic for palmen said it definately was the transmission and replaced the transmission solenoid pack. The problem continued the follwing week when we were on vacation. I brought the car back in and the manager kept it from july 3rd through the 5th. No repairs were made but the put on over 100 miles confirming the problem. They said it was electrical. I was to hear back from them on monday, july 9th but i had to go in july 11th to find out that they had no results.in the meanwhile, i had driven to louisville and back in the car only to have the same problems continue while i was stuck in a dangerous weather situation(high winds and rain). The car bucked at 42 mph and i could not accelerate. This is a potentially dangerous situation if i cannot get the car to accelerate when the transmission "gets stuck". Please help.

While driving about 45mph i heard a loud thump. A few moments later the van stopped pulling itself. I took it to a shop and they said that a pin in the transmissionhad broke and tore up the housing of transmission causing all of the fluid to pour out onto the road. No one was hurt but i was told that it was a common problem and think that if it is common dodge should help pay for some of the damage.

A bolt in the transmission broke and dislodge a bearing that blew a hole in the housing. This resulted invehicle being unable to go intogear, and driver losing control ofthe vehicle.

Transmission needed to be replaced/rebuilt because it was leaking. Had problems with it shifting to neutral while driving with my 3 kids. Now, it is lurching forward by itself while slowing down at a stop light or going in reverse. It is back at the mechanic and they are stating there is 1 or 2 faulty solenoid packs and something about a sensor and not reading correctly. The van had only 50,000 miles on it when this problem first started happening. Spent $2400.00 1st time at mechanic, other 2 times are for free. Let's face it, people don't normally drive vans because they like them, they drive them because they have young children. This car is not safe in my opinoin at all and i will never buy a dodge or any of its 'cousins' again. Why hasn't dodge had a recall for the numerous problems i have read about? oh, and by the way, where is my recall for the airbag light problem?

Wife was loading grand kids into minivan, grandson crawled across drivers seat and grabbed the shifting lever, which the caused van to go into reverse and back up into step wall, we realized you do not have to put foot your onthe brake to shift into gear when engine is running.

Parking gear shifter can be placed into to drive or reverse without applying the brakes first. The dealer has been contacted, and told consumer that this was a normal operation.

My 1999 dodge caravan shift lever can be moved out of park position with engine running without having to press on the brake pedal ,this creates a very dangerous safety problem if a child is left in van without being restrained chrysler corp.corrected this problem in 2001 can something be done to earlier models?

I own a dodge/chrysler caravan.i have gen3 seatbelts which are unsafe and i believe chrysler should be forced to replace the belts free of charge.

I think that there is sufficient evidence that the generation 3 seat belts are a faulty design.i think they need to be recalled and replaced with generation 4 seat belts before another person is injured or killed.this is very important and affects all 3 of our vehicles.we have children and i am worried that something will happen to them, or me.daimler chrysler needs to fix this problem or we will think twice about buying anymore chrysler vehicles.they are all that we have bought in the past!*la

I would like to know what consumers can do to get replacements for the gen3 seatbelts which have been tested as unsafe according to the abc news report. The seatbelts can unlock in an accident.please do something to have these vehicles recalled.

The front bench seat belt on the passenger side did not latch properly. The seat belt became unlatched 3 times, while driving with the consumer's child in the car seat, which caused the child to fall out and hit the floor.

Seatbelt in middle position of backseat has come unbuckled 3 times. Child safety seat is installed in this seat. Vehicle has not been examined by dealer.

Consumer was involved in a frontal collision in which the driver's lap and shoulder belt did not lock up, cause unknown..et.

There exists a recall on the seat belt retractors which is being honored by the dealer, however, the latching receptacle on the passenge side has failed. It does not latch securely and will release of its own volition. The dealer wants to charge for a new latch and while the cost is not exorbitant, i feel this is a safety item and should be factory warranted without limit. If i were the company i would far rather repalce an item such as this as opposed to being subject to a lawsuit for someone injured or killed due to failure.

After having problems with the seat belts in the rear seat of our minivan, being that they don't' unlatch at certain times as well as the fact that at times when trying to latch them, they won't latch until much difficulty,i did a search for information on them, and find that these seat belts are dangerous (gen 3)i called the dealer to ask about having them replaced and they said there wasn't anything they could do as they would just be the same (version) put back in.i want the seat belt replaced as i have 5 children and often have them in this vehicle,it is unfortunately not likely that we can afford to have the car replaced at this time, or we certainly would.

Consumerwas upset because all four back seatbelts did not work. There werepassengers in the rear seatswho could not buckle in safely. Consumer wanted to withdraw the complaint. Consumer was unaware as to how the system was suppose to work in the caravan.the dealer was contacted who informed the consumer that the seat belts do not lock when puled manually.*ph *nlm

With no warning and in normal driving conditions, the vehicle will not stop while applying braking pressure.braking failure occurs without warning and only allows for about a 20% braking function even when applying full pressure to the brake pedal. No codes are stored (as per the dealer) and after an incident, the brake will function normally. Dealer has looked the the brake system twice and claims there is no problem. However the loss of braking function occurs randomly. Dealer refuses to replace any parts because no codes have been saved in the computer.

From the time that we purchased this vehicle, we have had an on-going problem with the brakes.when we are at a speed of greater than 60mph and begin braking, we have a vibration in the front end.it is afffecting the handling of the vehicle.the first time it was taken to the dealer on 4-20-99-they resurfaced the rotors.on 5-19-99, it went in for the same problem-they replaced the rotors.on 6-15-99, it went in for the same problem-they replaced the rotors, balanced and rotated the tires.

I had been to a funeral and was driving home on the highway at the highway speed of 70 miles per hour only minutes before the failure of this part.i had turned into the residential section and had gotten to my house and slowed to about 20 miles per hour or less to turn into my driveway.the part broke at this time and all the power steering went out.i could not turn into my driveway.i had my car towed to the nearest mechanic and he told me what part had broken.it also hit the pulley when it broke and the pulley and belt broke also.my mechanic told me this is a dealer item; however, they stock it because it breaks all the time on the 1999 models and older models also.if this part had broken only minutes earlier while i was on the highway, driving at the highway speed of 70 miles per hour and the power steering went out completely, i could have had an accident and the passenger in my van and myself could have been seriously injured or killed and it could have involved other vehicles due to my lack of steering ability.i have not called dodge to see if this part has been redesigned for the newer models or not.i believe this should be a recall item due to the imminent danger imposed by this failure and the fact that it happens very often.

This family car is not a vehicle we drive every day. On (9/10/04), we went to use this car with less than 72,000 miles on it, and when we went to turn the steering wheel we heard a squeling noise from the power stering unit. We found an area of seepage of stering fluid under the vehicle. After further investigation we had found it to be coming from the area of the base of the power stering pump casting. The leaking fluid is actually flowing through the voids in the metal of this unit. Not only is this a hazard to the operation of the vehicle and its passenger's, it is a hazard to other vehicles on the highway. I am very concerned with the use of poor quality parts and used in our transportation industry. If a person is driving one of these vehicles and one of these units fails it could cause catasrophic damage to the people involved. I do feel obligated to inform you of this defect. As of 8/17/04 this vehicle will have this defective power stering unit replaced at the chrysler dealer in keene nh. I am not aware if i will be able to get this unit back from the dealer when they replace it.

1999 dodge caravan, shock tower rust, this is not just cosmetic rust, this is serious structural problem where the suspension can fail by breaking up through the shock tower and collapse the from end of the vehicle.this is a defect by chrysler and they should pay for the repair.i have two dodge caravans and both have the same shock tower rust problems.even the dodge dealers keep many repair kits in stock because of the large demand.as the dodge carvans get older, there will be an increased number of failures and possible safety issues.the vehicles are only 10 years old, and have this type of problem is just wrong.

While replacing rear brake drums in my garage, it became necessary to jack the vehicle to raise the rear left side and remove the rear left wheel.i broke the lug nuts loose while the vehicle was on the ground, then, using the jack supplied with the vehicle, i followed the procedure outlined in the owner's manual to position the jack in the recommended location toward the left rear at the identified jacking location.i raised the vehicle just enough to remove the wheel.as i was spinning the lug nuts off, the car fell off the jack.this occurred because rust had compromised the structural metal at the jacking location and the weight, while the car was being raised, crushed the weakened steel.fortunately, i was not too close and was not caught under the wheel or other body part.upon close inspection it became apparent that the structure of the car, at the recommended jacking location, had been severely compromised by rust.the extent of the rust damage was not obvious until the car fell off the jack.at that point the paint which had been hiding the damage had fallen off as the structural steel under it collapsed under the weight of the car.there is also a rubber pad that contributed to concealment of the structural damage since it covered most of the damaged area surrounding the stud used to properly locate the top of the jack.i believe this to be a serious safety issue that has the potential to cause injury to anyone who follows the procedure outlined in chrysler's owner's manual.

Strut tower corrosion.

While driving at 30mph vehicle shimmied. Cv joints went out, and when vehicle reacheed 60mph, vibration stop. Please provide any additional information.

The strut tower on the driver's side of my 1999 dodge caravan has completely rusted out, causing the strut to burst through into the engine compartment below the windshield. A auto body repair man said this is a very serious structural and safety issue. In researching a fix for this problem, i discovered that hundreds of dodge caravan, town and country, and plymouth voyager models were susceptible to this dangerous engineering failure.

Upon taking our 1999 dodge caravan in for repairs we were informed that our lives would be at risk if we continued on driving our vehicle. It seems that the upper strut mounting house under the hood on the left side of our vehicle is severely corroded and ready to crack, the same holds true about the right side but at this time not as severe. When asked how this could have happened we were told it was a manufacturing defect which they have witnessed before in chrysler vehicles. Complaint received via e-mail. I discovered that my dodge caravan, 1999 driver's side strut towerrusted significantly ,and may possibly break. This could lead to a potentially serious problem later. I think that this probably was due to defective material used by a chrysler supplier.chrysler should consider this a serious issue, and at least warn people who have their cars, or pay for the repairs/replacement of the strut towers. The tower was not replaced.two estimates were quoted at over $1000.

While stopping at light vehicle downshifted and made a noise.engine check light came on.lost all gears except one. Dealer contacted.

This started about a week ago and is intermittent. The speedometer sticks on a number usually between 0 and 10 mph, but the vehicle is going much faster than indicated. It bobbles up and down and then seems to function okay. It's going to the dealer this week. *nlm

Whenever trying to putvehicle into gearvehiclewill, without notice, accelerate even whileconusmer hasfoot on the brake.akinterlock system was never installed on vehicle, consumer states he can move the gear lever at any time.

It is an intermittent problem.the speedometer gets stuck on a number but the car is still going faster or slower than shown on the display.it stays stuck for a few minutes when it happens.i trynot accelerate and even apply the brake, however, the needle remains stuck.then it eventually goes back to normal. It just recently happened again, so i was checking to see if a recall was issued for this problem.it was investigated as i see here, however, it was not recalled.this is a defect.i am sure, not positive that other people are having the same problem with their caravans.note, automobile stills accelerates and slows but the actual speed is not known because the needle is stuck.

Vehicle lunged forward. I was unable to control speed due to lunging and stalling. Does this with or without the air condition on and only upon acceleration. Does not matter if it is on an incline or not-always upon acceleration.very unsafe and i am very worried as i travel alone with a toddler in this daily.

1999 grand caravan purchased new , transmission failed with approx 10000 miles repaired, still not right dealer unable to duplicate problem. 552(b)(6).

The speedometersuddenly froze, while vehicle was in motion.

Was driving & drove over a small bump. This caused 2 tires to blowout on the highway. Also, noticed that a wheel was split after stopping vehicle & checking. Took bolts off & the wheel fell apart.advised by 2 auto experts that the wheel should not have split, but chrysler refuses to accept responsibility.*ml
