Problem is with a component called a "clock spring connector".it controls not only the air bag deployment system but also controls the cruise control and horn operation.i have been out on the internet and noticed that this is a common problem with all dodge caravans dated from 1994-2000.i have also spoke with numerous repair shops stating that they see this problem at least 2-3 times a week.thank you for you time and consideration to this matter.

My 98 dodge caravan had a failed clockspring, which caused the airbag, horn, and cruise control to not function.chrysler has a recall on a failed clockspring for 96-98 dodge caravans, and clearly states on its website it will reimburse customers for repairs to the clockspring.however, when i brought mine in for repair, and on subsequent phone calls and letters written to chrysler, they indicate that my build date was not included in the recall.they need to expand the build date to later months in 1998, and consequently increase the amount of cars covered in the recall, because there is obviously a problem with the clockspring during my build date.this will cause people to have non-functioning airbags, cruise control, and horns, and unfortunately, may cause lives to be lost.i believe chrysler should also reimburse me the $284.20 i had to pay to get the clockspring repaired, as they indicate on their website they will reimburse customers with 98 caravans for repairs on failed clocksprings.by them not reimbursing me, they are falsely advertising on their website.*la

I have 2 chrysler mini vans one 1997 & 1998. We receivied a recall regarding defects which related to motor safety recallin some 1996 through 1998 minivans.since my 1998 was experiencing the defect listed failed clockspring allowing air bag light to be illuminated and speed control system to be inoperative we took the van to a nearby chrysler dear to be repaired only tofind out our vin number was not the one listed to be recalled.i do not understand when the recall states some 1996 through 1998 model year minivan's how do they determine which vin number to be recalled. My 1997 was the vin number to be recalled however my 1998 van is experiencing the recall problem.my 1998 van also has 78,000 miles the recall states if mimivan has 70,000 or less clockspring will be replaced without charge even if it appears to be functioning properly.my 1998 is not functioning properly.chrysler has identified the problem states my airbag may not deploy in a frontal crash.arbitary milage and vin number deceisionsby the manufacture should not cause the consumer to have dangerous and life threating parts in their viehicals.

I have a 1998dodge caravan that the gauges do not register october of last year, the lights, horn, turn signals and accessories still work, on the caution panel the abs light stays on, the dodge dealer(ozark, alabama) has replaced the vehicle computer, and electrical block under the hood it works for about two months then go dead again.
The instrument panel keeps going dead, no gauge readings at all.the abs light comes on and the gas, temp, speedometer, mileage and gear lights don't work, they just go out. So you have no idea what your speed is which can cause an accident. This is not the first time that this has happened and we have checked all the connections. I have also heard from several other people that own caravans and other models that it has happened to them as well.i have already had to replace my transmission because i was left stranded with no notice at all.i love my caravan what i don't love is all the issues that i have been having with it. Yeah, it might be 10 years old but i have only owned it for 5 months and if i had known that these things were known to happen to the caravans i would not have purchased it.
My case is about what the call the " clockspring"i am very concern about this, i think dodge should look at thislives could be lost. Because of this.......

Airbag light on no turn signals and no reverse lights due to failed airbag clockspring
The los angeles cbs affiliate station aired a story about chrysler vehicles year 2007 to 2012 that were being investigated for a potential recall.the problem is a faulty tipm, also known as a powertrain control module.vehicle owners report instrument panel problems, gauges not working, airbag not working, windshield wipers operating without being turned on, problems starting the vehicle, and so on.i have a 1998 dodge grand caravan with many of these same problems/symptoms.i spent $212 on inspection and diagnosis fees.pep boys told me that the problem was the powertrain control module and it would take a prohibitively high price to replace.my vehicle has recently experienced problems similar to the ones described above:fuel gauge not consistently showing the correct amount of fuel in the tank; the airbag and horn not working; the wipers occasionally operate without being turned on; the power door locks do not work properly when vehicle is being locked & unlocked with the key; the heater operates without being turned on, and so on.i was wondering if this information can be used sent to the manufacturer or compared in information submitted by other chrysler owners.the powertrain control module is a durable part, it should operate well for the life of the vehicle.i'm wondering if there is any investigation going on which may lead to a recall.thank you for your attention.
I was backing out of a parking space in 2012, when the brakes completely failed, i had to put my vehicle into gear in order for it to stop. Even though i was only going 5 mph or less, i was on a downhill slope. There wasn't an accident nor any damage,so i don't have that to report.the van was taken to towbin dodge in henderson, nv that weekend i believe and i was told that the recall defect had been fixed. However, the horn, airbag light and abs still do not work.my vin #[xxx], my question is this. If the recall problem is still defective even though it's been repaired, what am i supposed to do? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The instrument panel components began to turn on and off quickly like a flicker.the first instance was in aug and since then it has happened about five times.two times the car stopped and would not start for a few minutes.

I only have 35,000 miles on this car and of course the warranty is expired.and all of a sudden, the car acts like it has 135,000 miles on it.this has already cost me over $200 to repair brakes because of rotors, not bad brakes.now i need $1000 head gasket work.starter only seems to start when it wants to.very temporamental.what is going on here that a 35,000 mile car would have so much wrong so soon.dt
Serpentine belt failed for the 4th time while driving. Had heard a funny noise prior to no steering. This caused a loss of steering control. First 2 times was at 35mph. 2nd 2 times was while starting vehicle. Been to dealer each time to have belt replaced. Power steering, water pum, alternator and air conditioner failed.
On my wife's 1998 dodge caravan, the idler serpentine belt tensioner arm completely broke off causing alot of noise under the hood, loss of power steering, and loss of alternator battery recharge.it also caused some damage to the other pulleys.i've owned many cars and this has never happened on other makes.this is a safety hazard that can leave anybody in the middle of no where.
Srs light appeared on thedashboard and remained on.horn and cruise control failed to operate. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined thatclock spring needed to be replaced.
Air bag sensor light came on and stayed on, causing horn and flashers not to work.
On several occasions my 1998 dodge caravan would stall when starting up, it has a reoccuring airbag light, cruise control misfunctioning and horn stalling issues. I currently had to take it to chyristler for repairs. I was told from the manufacturer that there was a recall on the dodge caravan 1996-1998 re:clockspring.my veh. Was not listed with this recall and i'm concerned that i am experiencing the same problems as the dodge caravans that have been recalled.the air bag light appear on the dashboard and remain on.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic replaced the clockspring.
Horn stopped working. Horn fuse is good. Air bag warning light came on and has stayed on.
Consumer states horn is inoperative.*yd
Air bag light on / horn doesn't work / cruise control doesn't work
At least a year ago, my airbag light came on and has stayed on.approximately the same time, i began having problems with my criuse control.in addition, my horn has quit functioning.i contacted a dealership, and they stated it sounded like the airbag clockspring had gone bad.the part alone was estimated to cost $250.i recently checked the nhtsa site, as see that my van is not the only one with these same problems.
Horn would not blow, and airbag light is on.took to dealer, dealer stated vehicle needed a clock spring.please provide any further information.
Air bag light comes on andhorn is not working, leading consumer to believe that clock spring material was defective when contactingdealer. Dealer noted the same problem.
At any speed air bag light stays on. Also, horn is inoperable, and cruise control does not work.there isrecall 02v293000 concerning clock spring failure. However, this vehicle is not included in the recall due to vin.
Vehicle was set on cruise control at 70-72mph.consumermade rest stop/ got back onroad resuming cruise control, and it quit working.horn would not work either. A day in a half before, airbag light just stayed on. Consumer hasn't contacteddealer.
Clockspring has failed rendering the airbags and horn unusable.this is a safety hazard and other year dodge caravan minivans have been recalled.my dealer said that my year minivan is not part of those recalled.i believe this safety component failure needs to be recalled by the manufacturer and replaced.
While driving consumer lost the horn, cruise control, andair bag lightappeared on the dashboard. Dealer determinedclock spring failure.
Consumer received recall 02v293000 concerning air bag clock spring failure.air bag light and the left signal light illuminated while in motion, also, horn was inoperative and the left turn signal gave off an consent alarm sound when engaged.
Air bag light was on,the horn did not work, andcruise control malfunctioned.recall 02v950000 concerningclock spring failure was issued.
I have had a recent problem where i just thought that the air bag light was on.i later learned that not only is the air bag light on but the air bag will not deploy if naccident occurs.in addition the horn and cruise control does not work.by searching on the web i have learned from the dealer that this is a common problem in their vehicles.it will cost me over 250 dollars to correct.how can dodge know that this problem exists and does not tell anyone or have a recall.this is deplorable.i am sure that deaths have occurred because of this and dodge knows this too.please let me know what can be done.thank you.vince filliben 610-361-8921.
This vehicle has multiply problems.consumer noticed that the air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.when pressing the horn it failed to come on its own. Consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred on numerous occasions, and had not been resolved.
While driving air bag light suddenly illuminated on the dashboard. When this occurred it rendered the horn and cruise control inoperative.recall 02v290000 was issuedfor the air bag, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

98 dodge caravan, purchased from dealership: security system locks up and will not allow the car to start. I was informed by an older mechanic that this problem was common to all dodges with security systems built since 91.if this is so common why have they not fixed the problem at the source?i took my van in to the dealership for some minor bodywork, when i went to pick it up, it would not start.they tore it apart for two days and basically said, "gosh, i don't know what's wrong."i have been left stranded (15 minutes to 5 hours) about 15 times since i purchased the vehicle. In my job i transport disabled clients so this is a serious problem.

I have a 1998 dodge van caravan. Intermittently the cruise control star to fail, some timewould turn on other times would not work at all and then died then the horn quit working and then e few weekslater the air bag light came on and stayed on. Few weeks after thatthe van at parked would start then shut off; start shut off. It does that five times and then it dies. 20 minutes later it would start just fine. A friend of mine call to my attention that there were a few recalls on this van. One of them was the clock spring and the rear sound barrier/outboard seat belts.the clock spring was replaced. On my way home from the dealership i heard a noise in the front end when i arrived home i called a mechanic the next day. He looked at my van on that monday to find the stabilizer bar broke and zippity strip to the strut which was also bad. The dealer let me drive 180 miles with my son in the vehicle, and the front end was like this. The following week i was driving down the road and white smoke started to come from the vents so i returned to the mechanic and paid $105.00 to have freon with dye ran through my system to find the evaporator was bad and needed replaced, which would cost at least $860.00. Then at 36 days of ownership and only 64000 miles the constant velocity joint is bad and a new transaxle is going to have to be put in this week. I have called the dealership where it was purchased and all they can say is were sorry we got the vehicle in 2 days prior to my purchase and was never inspected, there money was more important than me and my son. I then called the daimler chrysler corporation where they were rude and said there is no recalls on your vehicle theres nothing we can do for you. I know from some research there has been a big problem with the evaporators on chrysler products. Please help me i do not know what else to do. This is the van i will be driving my two sons to school in, i starting to wonder how safe we will be.

I purchased my vehicle in 2000. Two months later my transmission went. 16 months after that my motor went. I had to let my vehicle sit for nine months not being able to drive it and yet still making payments on it before i could afford to replace to the motor. So 3 weeks ago i had the motor replaced and now my transmission has gone again. Supposedly it was replaced with a factory rebuilt transmission the first time around. This seriously upsets me that the transmission has gone again. I still owe 2 and 1/2 years of payments on this vehicle and i am back to i cannot drive it again because i cannot afford to get it fixed. I was told of some factory problem with the transmissions and i wondered if this could be the reason that my vehicle is out of commission again. On october 6, 2000 i was taking my son to school when i lost all ability to accelerate.i was going fast enough i was able to coast into the parking lot.my vehicle was towed to the dealership where we purchased it.they were not cooperative or friendly and were unable to diagnose my vehicle within the 3 day time frame they had promised.so on 10-09-2000 we had to have it towed to an independent garage to be diagnosed and fixed.the diagnosis was total transmission failure.we had to have them fix it b/c our dealer was going to be 3-5 weeks to fix it, and we had a rental car during this time.the cost was $1455.00, that we paid out of our pocket.during their investigation of our problems they also found an oil leak.my husband is very good with cars and has made several attempts to fix the problem, to no avail.on 3-9-2001 i had the car oil leak diagnosed by an independent garage.they said the head gasket was leaking oil and would have to be replaced.a cost of approximately $600.00 and down time of the vehicle being 2-3 days.as this is our main vehicle this presents a problem.we have been told by many people and garages that these 4 cylinder engines are widely known to have transmission and head gasket problems.one garage went so far as to tell us that chrysler knew they had these problems but just would not put out a recall.we have had the van for 23 months.nothing went wrong during the valid warranty time.when the transmission went out the vehicle was only over warranty by approximately 5000 miles.our dealer was not willing to work with us within the time frame they had originally given us, so we were forced to go somewhere else and pay out of our pocket for the repairs, as we could not afford a rental car for the 3-5 weeks the dealer was going to take to diagnose and repair the problem. We would like to see chrysler be forced to take responsibility for these problems.

Subject: defective serpentine belt designi have a concern about a recent malfunctioning serpentine belt in my 1998 caravan.the belt has slipped off twice last month while driving in the rain. The first incident left me stranded off the side of the freeway waiting for a tow truck. The second incident occurred when backing out of a parking spot on damp payment (no standing water) while at a rest stop many miles from home.both incidents occurred on normal pavement and driving during rainy days, and without any warning. The van has the standard 3.0 liter v6 engine with 88k miles, but the serpentine belt installed was less than 1 year old.two sets of professional mechanics found the belt, the belt tensioner, and all related parts of the system in good working order (including the engine mounts).in summary, the system was well maintained and working as designed.the concern we have is the design of this system. The vehicle has been very reliable during the last eight years. But this particular problem is greatly distressing.not only is the range of the vehicle limited to a couple of miles with a strong battery, the loss of power assisted steering makes this both a safety and reliability issue.
The vehicle stalled, which was caused by the serpentine belt falling off. The belt was replaced, however the problem recurred.
The contact owns a 1998 dodge caravan. While driving various speeds, the power steering seized without warning. The failure was persistent. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the serpentine belt failed and needed to be replaced. While my wife and daughter were driving, the timing belt on her 1998 dodge caravan (2.4 l)broke.the car immediately died in the middle of thestreet creating a very hazardous situation for my family.looking at therecommended maintenace on this car i noted that there is no recommendedmaintenance for the timing belt until 120,000 miles.thus, since the car only had 72,000 miles, this belt broke far earlier than it should have.i feel that this should not have occurred.since this can create a very hazardous/dangerous situation if it occurs on a busy street or on a freeway, dodge should determine whether this is becoming a common problem with this car and if so whether it should notify owners that the belt should be examined far earlier than at 120,000 miles or if the car should be recalled and the timing belt replaced.
The serpentine belt slips off when you drive through water. Losing the belt causes dangerous steering changes and stops the water pump and alternator. The most recent time this happened i almost lost control of the car and had a near miss head on crash problem has happened 5 times on my car and two friends who have the same model caravanhave also had problems with it. While driving about 45mph all of the guages and lites came on and then immediately went off.noticed all of this when a left hand turn was made, resulting im no control. No warning lights came on. Serpentine belt stretched but the belt tensioner was almost totally useless.
My 98 dodge caravan sport is having repeated problem with the serpentine belt and belt tensioner. From a quick search on the web it appears to be a common problem, that the belt would slip off when it gets wet. I have experienced this problem 3 times so far, twice in jan 2006 and another one just today (nov 06). I cannot trust the van anymore, i cannot tell when this problem is going to happen again and when it does, the van lost power steering and would overheat. Lost of power steering can be extremely dangerous especially when trying on a freeway, and being easily overheat would leave me stranded at possibly isolated places. This is a problem that takes repeated fixing yet would not resolve.

During january 2001 the transmission would completely shut off in mid traffic or at a turn then either stall or turn back on by itself. We had it into the dealership 3 times beforeengine check light came on and they could tell us what they say the problem was : the egr valve and some kind of transmission leak. They completed the work for several hundred dollars and now in october 2001 the transmission while driving started making revving (accelerating) noises then stalled with no warning, now it will not shift from first gear without stalling and another chrysler dealership says we need a whole new transmission for over two thousand dollars.

I have a 1998 dodge caravan with only 66,332 miles the problem's that have come up is first the transmission had a internal pin bust which caused several parts to come apart. This caused the transmissionto break, it had to be rebuilt on 2-17-04 with 61995 miles at the cost of $1685.25. The second problem is the air conditioning system had a failure with the evaporator which seems to be very comon according to several service centers that i have contacted outside the chrysler company. Which spitzer dodge wanted to charge $1100.00 to repair. I know the vehical is 6 years old but with the low milage i think this is a little uncalled for and though it should be reported.
At approximately 50,000 miles, the ac unit needed to be recharged. This would be around august of 2001. While out of the norm with a relatively new vehicle, i chalked it up to routine maintenance had coolant added and went on my way. In july of 2002, the ac again was not cooling the vehicle. Mileage on the vehicle was around 60,000 at this point. I spoke with an employee of the then daimler chrysler (i believe that unit has been sold to behr corporation) hvac unit in dayton, oh. He asked me to have the evaporator unit checked. A close friend of mine is a mechanic; i had him do the work. He placed dye in the system to check for leaks and dye was found to be leaking from the ac drain, pointing to the impending failure of the evaporator. I relayed this information to the chrysler employee and he confirmed that it was indeed the evaporator that was causing a coolant leak. At that time he asked me to contact my dealer to see if any service bulletins or recall notices had been issued for this problem. I also called to verify my warranty, etc., to cover my bases. I was told that there were no recalls and that i was indeed out of warranty. I also asked for an approximate price to replace an evaporator and was quoted a price that was approaching $1000.00i did not really get agitated over this until this past july. Figuring that the routine of recharging the unit for the warm months was a prudent way to deal with this problem, i was prepared to spend about $25.00 for coolant and go on my merry way for this summer. One slight problem. The compressor failed at 66,000 miles.as i stated before, i understand warranties and i get the process. But for a total system failure, related only to normal operation, in my opinion is unacceptable. Especially since the chrysler employee told me that the evaporator issue was a known problem in both my 1994 vehicle and my 1998.
The recirculating light and the a/c light are constantly flashing.
Air conditioningcondensor frozen.
The evaporator coil had to be replaced in the a/c.
The air conditioner compressor which was broke and rubbed against the serpentine belt caused the vehicle to catch on fire, also the head gaskets failed.
Air conditioner started to not cool the air. Took it to goodyear (gemini) dealer in wadsworth, oh who charged the unit and added dye to pinpoint the coolant loss point. On return they informed me it was the evaporator which by inference from their comments is quite common. Cost was $742.00 plus the previous charge of $75.00. It appears to me that something this common is a fault that should be remedied by the mfg. Noted a 94 complaint on nhtsa about the same thing with costs almost identical.

5 batteries since purchased new. Three were noted as having leaked battery acid. In may/june 2003, the wiring harnesses (main ones) had been eaten by battery acid causing all sorts of electrical problems.the harnesses are routed under the battery pan. Stupid placement. Dealer spliced wires together to get it running at his cost, at my insistence.van continues to start inconsistently.horn doesn't work since dealer spliced wires. Turn ignition key - click, repeat 10-20 times, starter will catch on one. Design defect is routing of harnesses and lack of shield to protect them.

Headlamps on 1998 dodge caravan have clouded over so much that it makes it difficult to see while driving at night.received two estimates on replacement of headlamps. Both were between 600 & 700 dollars.informed by both mechanics that replacement lamps would more than likely do the same thing after a number of years because there has been no recall on part in question for that year vehicle.
Material headlamps are made of is yellowing/dullto the point that it interferes with your vision at night. We have tried to clean andbluff them. Some part of the turn signal mechanism broke inside the steering column.evidently, a broken piece moved into such a position as to jam the steering shaft.this occurred during a left turn at a controlled intersection from a stop.the steering jammed in a left turn position giving the feeling to the driver (my wife) that steering control had been lost.giving the steering wheel significantly greater effort broke free the jam condition allowing us to proceed to the dealer for repair.the service writer's comment was to the effect that this was not unusual.my attitude is that it should never happen because if the driver panics, or the jam can't be broken, a serious accident can happen.i haven't heard of a repair campaign on this type of failure.other than that instance, this van is fine in every respect.thanks for your service.
Air bag sensor light came on and stayed on, causing horn and flashers not to work.

The van started acting like is not getrting gas on march 11. It stalled and wouldn't start again so i had it towed to the garage by my house. They could't find the promblem. So i took it home after a week. It diid it again so i had it towed back to the garage and they still couldn't find it. So i drove it to a dealer and they had it for a week. They found no reason for it to stall or act like it had no gas. So i took it home and it did it again so i took it to another dealer and they stated i needed a new battery and fuel thottle and a feul purge and new fuel filter so i paid 438.00 for the work to be done and took it home after a week. Then i had it for 2 days and it acted like it didn't get gas and stalled again. So i had it towed back to the dealer and they kept it for 2 weeks and they still have no idea what the promblem is. I am not taking it to the dealer i bought it from but onechryslersaid was a five star and in my city. Everyone is been real nice but they promblem is still there. It is unsafe to drive a vehicle that may die while driving . I have had it towed 5 times since 3/11. I may have gotten one week worth of driving out of it for this month and a half. It still has the promblem.
A mechanic informed the consumer that they should not put a full tank of gas in the car and should only fill half a tank. When the tank was full this would cause a leak/rust. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Please provide more information.
When the fuel tank is full a gasoline odor enters the passenger cabin of the vehicle, and gasoline leaks under the vehicle.the fuel tank seal was replaced, but the problem still exists.when consumer went back to the dealer, they suggested to replace the fuel tank because the collar on top of the tank shaped like an egg instead of the circular shape; however, consumer refused because he believed that it was manufacturer's defect.*la

Shop had to rebuild transmission at a cost of over $2,000.brakes ------ extremely excessive wear of front brake pads. Must be replaced at least once a year now. I am having alot of problems with my van over the past year i have put over 1500 worth of work into this van they made the engine too small for this size of a van. I continue to have problem with the engine and now the transmission is acting up.
For the amount of money this used vehicle is costing me i would have been better off to buy a new one. The vehicle is a 1998 dodge caravan. *nlm

06/00 front carrier came apart, 07/01 transmission stopped working, dealer unable to replicate problems,05/02 complete failure of planetary gear mechansim.
Transmission failed without warning. Parts were so badly damaged that nothing was salvagable and a new transmission had to be rebuilt.we have kept the parts if they are needed for an investigation.we notified dodge who said they were not responsible for any repairs, and that we have no appeal to this decision (amey, file no. 8723066). We had a mechanic fix it. The charge was $2,417. Is there any course of action we can take against dodge? it doesn't make sense that a transmission could fail in this way with so few miles on the car.

After backing the car out of the driveway i hear a clunking noise, put the car into drive and it will not move. Only after restarting the engine and then putting it into 2nd gear could we move the car out of the street.
Vehicle would not engage into third gear. After vehicle warms up it will not shift in and out of gear, stays in same gear.
While driving the transmission failed, the pin went trough the case and caused the front end to lock up and the van went skidding down the road i had no steering the gears were on the road surface. This happend a second time with the transmission that was put in at 61000. Miles. I am currently on my third transmission and fearful that at a highway speed this catastrophic mechanical breakdown would cause a major accident.
The transmission can be shifted from park to drive without having foot on brake. Also, when shifting into drive, indicator not really locked in drive position even if shown in drive. The mechanic has to replaced the transmission (twice) because of damage done while trying to shift properly. Ts
Total transmission failure. We drove to nj from our house, no problems, noises orwarnings parked the car and 1/2 hour later go in the car and car would not move either back or forth. Had car towed to mechanic and next day he told me i neededa new transmission, i was shocked, so decide to get a 2nd opinion, took car to amaco , they diagnosed also that a needed new transmission or rebuild transmission. I was going away on vacation on friday , so had no options but fix transmission which cost me $2,021.25. I was glad it didnt brake while we were driving in the highway and no one got hurt. I asked the people at amaco , what made the transmission just die, at 81,525 miles and they told me is a very common problems with this particular car, so i decide to research and found out that they were right, by your own records of complaints. So, i hope the manufacturer will do something about it or be forced to do so. I also found out that there were other recalls that i was never notified about, such as seat belts and fuel system problems. *ph

We bought the dodge caravan se in 1998. Last year, when the vehicle was around 30,000 miles, the car was starting to have problem on shifting. It sometimes locked on the 2nd gear and wouldn''t go faster. After we turned off the engine and restarted, it was all ok again.on feb 21st, 2003 while we were driving on the highway, the transmission gave up and broke. The whole family was stranded, as the vehicle wouldn''t move at all.the vehicle had only 42,000 miles on it and only 6000 miles after the warranty expired.i therefore contacted the chrysler support. They replied plainly that it is my responsibility because it has passed the warranty.i thenpurchased a remanufactured transmission from phoenix remanufactured transmission in arizona and had kuan''s auto repair, an ase certified repair shop in st. Paul, fix it. I went on and conduct an extended research on chrysler''s transmission. There has to be something wrong if a brand new transmission would broke in 42000 miles.the result of the research is astounding:chrysler had this type of the transmission since 1988 and it is a design flaw in the transmission. The worst part is, chrysler knew about it since beginning and did nothing about it.thousands of people have the same problem with this type of transmission (a604 41te) on dodge, plymouth, chrysler brands of mini vans. Chrysler''s ignorance to the problem continues to jeopardize the safety of thousands of families with this defected transmission on their mini vans. A mini van is a family car and thousands of mothers and children depend on it.it is time for chrysler to put the safety and quality on their priority and pay for the cost to fix those faulty transmissions.

Transmission failed at 63,000 on the highway, on a cold day, 90 miles from home when i had my children, ages 2 and 5 in the van.this is supposed to be a family vehicle! it should be reliable and safe.i've always had toyotas and hondas and put 200,000 miles on them with no transmission failure.the public is being dumped by daimler chrysler into thinking that replacing transmissions is a normal part of vehicle ownership.i just had to spend $2800 to fix a vehicle that is worth about $7000.i've recently learned that many, many people have had this same problem and that caravans are notorious for bad transmissions and motor failure in under 100,000 miles.if they are going to market family vehicles they should be safe and reliable!*la
I started out in the morning to take my son to school, and we had to make a stop at the grocery store.when i got to the stop sign to turn into the grocery store i heard this clanking sound.the car had stopped and would not move.i had my car towed to a repair shop, and they said my transmission broke into pieces and fell out from under the van.he could not understand why this happened being that i only had 67,000 miles on the van.he could not fix it so i had to get a new one from the manufacturer.the whole process cost me $2400.00 (outrageous).before this incident happened there was leaking coming from under the van.with all the complaints and problems with the transmission i cannot believe dodge/chrysler has not done something about this.they should be held accountable.
Transmission failed while my wife was driving home from my daughters home which is about 3 miles distance. On the way home ther is a one mile stretch that has a 50 mile speed limit. My wife said that the van never got out of low gear on that stretch. When she got home ,i immediately went and took the van for a test drive, and found that what she had told me was in fact correct. The van does not want to kick into high gear .she drove it home in 2nd gear.

Failed transmission - after to talking to several dodge owners it is quite apparent that there is a problem with their transmissions.our family vehicle normally carries precious cargo of three small children.having a vehicle with a poor transmission and a company that does not believe in standing behind there product could be very life threatening to our family as well as others.it is at potential risk of causing a serious accident if it fails at the wrong time.prior to the 1998 products and currently dodge stands behind their drive train but for many years that stopped.which makes me wonder did they have a temporary problem with the transmissions in their vehicles which made them temporarily discontinue warranting them for 100,000 miles. As for the car seats i have contacted dodge as well as the nhtsa about the defect in the chest clip.the chest clip should snap safetly and not be able to be pulled apart but i have had them replaced several times and all of them with a little pressure can be pulled apart.i have had them inspected by several local officers and there has been papers filled out for the dmv by a local car seat check notifying them of the defect also. I have a buckle in my vehicle if you would like to inspect one.thank you for your time!
Transmission failed.
Van will not shift into reverse when first started, needs to warm up for at least 5-10 minutes.was evaluated by independent garage, needs complete transmission overhaul.why did chrysler's "goodwill" warranty end on 1997 models?obviously, they did not fix the transmission problems.a 3.5 year old vehicle with 51,000 miles on it should not need a complete transmission overhaul!this is quite costly, the fact that there was a "goodwill" warranty tells me chrysler knows there is a problem.why are they choosing to abandon their new customers (after 1997?)are they trying to loose our business?if this is how chrsyler treats it's customers, it certainly makes me want to look elsewhere for a vehicle in the future.please provide me with any information you can.thank you.
While traveling 60-65 mph on the highway on wet road conditionstransmission stalled. Dealer has been contacted for problem. Please provide further details.
Just a little concerned that after 8 months my transmission has gone bad.it may be a manufacturer problem, but i think it should be checked out.
I found out that the 1998 dodge caravan that i purchased has two design flaws.one is that the vehicle does not have brake-shift interlock.the other is that the vehicle is equipped with chrysler gen3 seat belts that, in some vehicles, have unlatched while people were driving.i believe that the government should order a recall of the 1998 caravan for both of these important safety issues.

I own a 1998 v6 dodge caravan.my wife was traveling on the interstate and the transmission literally blew apart.it was not merely a transmission failure, but the transmission case was destroyed along with the transmission.i have checked the transmission monthly since i purchased the van in 1999, and i have properly maintained and changed the fluid.the damage to my vehicle was $2,511.00.
Many people i have spoken with, including the employees at kennedy transmission, have said these transmission have a reputation of going out around 60-70,000 miles. Our differential was also damaged. The parts needed for this repair, i was told, is on a national backorder because this is such a common occurance.shouldn't the consumer be forwarned about have a $2800 repair after 60,000 miles?otherwise, shouldn't they put in a different transmission in these mini-vans?
Emergency brakes inoperable, airbag light turns on, horn does not work, hard time removing key from ignition and i can go from "p" to "r" or "d" without pressing on the brakes (even if there is no key in the ignition).

I have a 1998 dodge caravan with a transmission problem at 65,000 miles with a cost of repair at $2140.00, the dealer telling me i have a 15% off total cost to fix.an actual replacement is a $2600.00, a rebuilt at the cost of 2,140.00.a complaint has been made with chrysler, with no response from them as yet.the dealer said the would contact the zone mgr, but not available for me for at least a week. When i asked why this would happen, the dealer did reply, well, the van is 5 years old. Meaning?a disposable van at 5 years or 50,000 which ever comes first.ridiculous!

On august, 1, 1998, allen and anne mazerolle purchased a new 1998 dodge grand caravan se manufactured by chrysler from lee dodge in westbrook, maine.at the time of their purchase, neither the dealer nor chrysler provided any disclosure to the mazerolles concerning the differential transmission defect.in 2001, anne mazerolle was operating the chrysler minivan with her children in the vehicle. Without any advance warning, a thunderous noise occurred and the vehicle seized and the wheels locked in traffic. Mrs. Mazerolle telephoned chryslers authorized dealer, lee dodge, from the highway seeking assistance.mrs. Mazerolle was informed that, while it was within three years of the vehicles purchase, the mileage exceeded the 36,000 mile limitation and the mazerolles were out of luck as to any warranty coverage.the mazerolles then inquired as to whether there was any recall or problems concerning the chrysler transmission.they were informed by the chrysler dealer that no such problems had been reported by chrysler and there was no recall concerning the transmission. In the emergency, the vehicle was towed from the highway to a transmission specialist, a&m transmission, in south portland, maine.mrs. Mazerolle was informed by technicians that there was a serious defect in the transmission and that the pinion gear had seized to the pinion shaft and penetrated the bell housing of the transmission, resulting in the complete lock-up of the vehicles drive train and complete failure of the transmission. *sc

*ph

1998 dodge grand caravan sport (68,000 miles) driven on dry pavement on a clear day at speed limit or below (45mph zone) threw differential pin through transmission housing, destroying transmission.vehicle was transported to dealer and assessed.repair cost (new transmission) stated to be $3,445.this vehicle was purchased new from herb gordon dodge of silver spring, md. Research indicates that this is a recurring problem with this make and model of chrysler produced vehicle.
I was driving down the highway at 60 mph when i heard a loud noiseand my car shook.i pulled over and looked for a flat.there wasn't one.my power train differential pin went through the casing rendering my transmission useless, it had to be towed to the shop.the repair bill is $2500 for a new transmission.the transmission repair shop said this is very common on these vans.a search on the web revealed they usually blow out between 60,000-70,000 miles.this is a major flaw in the transmission.a phone call to chryslerwas useless.8jb
Had to have transmission rebuilt at 58,498 miles because of "lots of metal" found in pan during routine maintenance."found planetary & sun gear and carrier all bad from msun gear bearing going bad.clutches were also showing signs of slipping.something needs to be done about their bad transmissions.there is a very long history of it and the consumer is the one getting screwed.
06/00 front carrier came apart, 07/01 transmission stopped working, dealer unable to replicate problems,05/02 complete failure of planetary gear mechansim.
Contacted chrylser they have agreed to pay 50% of damage but i want to know what is going to keep this from happening again or if it has happened before.i was passing a car on the turner turnpike when i heard a pop and my tires vibrated i thoughti had had a flat. So i pulled over and left a trail of transmission fluid behind me. The pin in the spidergear snapped and flew threw the transmission. Found the piece on top of my transmission. I haul kids and got on trips i don't want this to happen again. How can i see if it has happened before.
Transmission failed at 86000 miles. The transaxle was perforated by broken pin.the 2nd transmission at the transmission shop could not be installed because of a crack in housing due to same problem. Transmission #3 that was installed lasted about 3 months and failed in the same manner. #4 could not be installed because it arrived with a crack in housing due to same problem. I now have transmission #5 installed in this vehicle. The failure is a pin in the transaxle becoming loose and flying out at a high rate of speed.the pin then creates a hole in the transmission case and allows fluid to escape causing transmission failure. The pin is usually stopped by the transmission case but it is only a matter of time before one flies out and injures somebody. Roll pin that secures gear pin is breaking. This is a manufacturing defect. Total cost of repairs was $1950.00.
When putting my vehicle in park i heard a horrible loud grinding/groaning noise. When i tried to put my car back in geer i heard the same noise and my vehicles wheels locked up andwould not moveforward or backward.i had it towed and the transmission specialist inspected it and showed me that the planitary exploded inside the transmission he said this is a manufactures defect and should never have happened. He gave me the parts that were shattered and cracked many in such little pieces you cant find that got mixed in with the transmission fluid. He also told me i'm lucky it didn't happen when i was driving it with my children in the van.i imagine we wouldn't be here now. This repair cost me $1600.00 dollars i called crysler and they told me they weren't responsible and couldn't help with this. If it's a defective part than aren't they responsible? please help.thank you ,julie ann hit.

Our middle row seat belts stop working. They don't retrack on their own. This is about the 4th we have to replace them both. We just replaced them in january of 07 and they don't retrack again. According to the dealer the pin or i forget what they called it snapped again. We have not been in an accident since they were replaced in january. We are afraid that even after replacing them that they will not protect or kids if god forbid we are in an accident. They keep breaking with just everyday use. Each seat belt cost around $200.00 just for the parts and they are currently on backorder for a month and now my kids can't sit in the middle rows.

The safety seats in my van have defective latch plates!the latch plates that i'm referring too is the plate that is right at the child's armpit level.this latch plate when pulled on will pull completely apart.i believe that this is unsafe for my son to ride in.i have read a lot on child seat safety and it is very important to me.i velieve that with the knowledge i have in this area that in a car wreak this latch plate would pull apart and my son could be very seriously injured or even killed.he would probably be thrown between the two shoulder belts instead of being held between them.i have reported this to chrysler and they have replaced my buckles 5 time.they do not consider this to be a defect yet i do!i have had to purchase my son a century car seat.all 5 of the buckles that i was given all had the same problem.i don't know how they think a child would be safe!i fear that there are other children riding in these integrated car seats and there parents are unaware of the problems with these latch plates and that there children are unsafe.i would hate to see any child hurt because of this problem.i still have a couple of the buckles if y ou would like to see them please let me know and i'll be glad to get them to you!!!thank you for taking the time to listen!i appreciate what youdo trying to keep the roads and our families safe!

Both rear seat belts have body sealant oozing on them - to the point where one will not budge from the side wall.the other, if you pull hard will release, but it is covered with sticky sealant which one would not want to wear!!i called a dodge dealership and they told me that they have seen many of these problems, but with my vehicle being over 36,000 miles, they wouldn't repair it unless i paid ~$450.00.meanwhile, i cannot buckle my children up.i think that this is a manufacturing defect and should be repaired free of charge.they are fixing this problem on most other minivans because they are under 36,000 miles.thanks - ed
I was forced to brake suddenly and the car seat my 4 year old daughter was buckeled into went flying into the back of the passenger seat.the problem is that the seat belts in the 1998 dodge caravan are easily depressed by a game boy, dolls or my older daughter either buckeling or unbuckeling her booster seat.i've found my 4 year olds strap in car seat unbuckeled at least 6 times in the past 4 years.had we been in a serious accident rather than just a sudden braking my daughter would have been severly injured.
The guides that the rear seat belts run through are "melting" so the rear seat belts do not go through the guides as they should.we have stopped using them because they would fail in an accident because they will not retract securely on a passenger.
While driving at 35mph plastic sound burier patch came loose and dropped into rear out seat belt assembly, causing seat belt not to work. Contacted dealer, recall on this part doesn'taffect consumer due to vin.

Only a block or 2 from home, doing 20 mph there was the smell of smoke then flames shot out from under the drivers seat. We bailed from the van and before 911 could be called the van was engulfed in flames. A total loss.

Consumerwas traveling 50mph andrearended a vehicle that came to sudden stop. Driver's seat collapsed backwards.upon impact, air bags failed to deploy.driver suffered injuries in both cases.vehicle was totaled after 12/14/00.
Vehiclehas no adjustablerestraints.there are holes planted inside ofvehiclefor a headrest. Dealership is aware ofproblem.the middle and rear seats have no head restraints.
My caravan has bench seats that do not have headrests, but do have attachment points for the headrests.i have recently noticed (2 or 3 weeks ago) that my daughter's head extends above the top of the seat.in the event of a collision, her head would snap back over the top of the seat.this could cause a serious injury.i called the dealership and found that, when i bought my van, headrests were considered accessories, but are now standard equipment.i believe that they are now standard equipment because chrysler realized its potential liability. The approximate cost of 4 headrests is $800.i e-mailed chrysler about this and received neither sympathy nor satisfaction.in my last e-mail, i mentioned the safety issue.they are no longer answering my e-mails.i did not realize that they may be responsible to correct this defect.please help.

Speed sensor failed.
Transmission ------------ sudden failure of all forward and reverse gears. Key off-on brings back forward drive for about 100 yards then fails again. No reverse gear at all. Computer diagnostic indicates 3 transmission errors related to shifting. Sensors look ok. Shop had to rebuild transmission at a cost of over $2,000.brakes ------ extremely excessive wear of front brake pads. Must be replaced at least once a year now. First time it occurred it destroyed one brake rotor -- had to replace that. Now, at the first sign of brake squeal i must check and replace the pads as they are close to wearing out. Generally get less than 15,000 miles per set.
Dt: the contact state that 1998 dodge caravan was having an intermittent problem with starting and stopping. The problem occurred on and off for about two years. The vehicle has been to the dealership, they have seen the problem, but could not duplicate it. Also, the vehicle hasbeen to an independent repair shop, and they could not fix the problem either. The vehicle only did this whenthe contactattempted to start it. This happenedevery day. The vehicle was taken back to the dealerfour or five times. Updated 11/29/2005 -
I have to change my front brake pads about every other month due to the brakes get to hot and usually the front driver side brake pad just falls off with no warning at all. I have taken this problem in to the dealer and was told that my calipers had to be replaced. I was very happy that it was still covered under the warranty. The dealer had my vehicle for about a week. When i got my van back it was fine for about 5 months, and then the problem started happening again. Now i am stuck with a vehicle that is costing a fortune to keep up the brake pad maintenance. I consider the brakes on a vehicle a lifeline and am surprised that this problem has not been recalled. Every person i know that owns a dodge caravan has the same complaint. I bought my van 01/01/00.*nlm

I was slowing down toward a traffic light and about 35-mph the abs light came on. The car brakes went almost to the floor could not stop. Consequently i could not avoid a collision. The dealer said that the air bag did not open because the vehicle impact was inches just above the left side of the bumper, to my surprise.i thought i was buying a safe vehicle for my family. Since the vehicle was new the light came on one time or another, the deler could not find the problem but it was there and nothing was fix.

The abs failure light comes on intermittently while driving at any speed. Once on, it stays on until the engine is switched off. Problem was very infrequent through the winter, but returned as weather began to warm. Recently have felt brake pedal pulsation as light was comming on , even at low speed stops. Dealer says light must be on solid in order to diagnose.
The only reasons an accident was avoided was that no one was in front of me ,and i resumed my rate of speed.i ended up 10 feet from a busy street before the van stopped.my small children were in the van with me at the time.i also feel fortunate that only 1 brake failed.

I am the second owner of a 1998 dodge caravan andbought a carfax report when purchasing which was clean showing no accidents, no problems. The one recall alert on this year and model was taken care of previously. The car has generally been dependable, other than ongoing problems with the instrument cluster which fails intermittently and all the panel lights go off.on january 6th, 2015 i was shopping not far from home and upon exiting the store parking lot to leave (2-3 mph) turning the wheel normally whilebacking up from my space, the entire steering wheel just fellinto my hands leaving it attached by only a few wires. There was no prior warning of the upcoming failure, no shaking, no wobble, nothing.i am a senior and was in the car alone. Luckily, some strangers helped push me back into parking space by holding and turning the steering wheel in place, as it would not snap back in.the tow truck driver stated that in his career he had never seen this, my experienced mechanic said the same. The car is currently in the shop. The entire column has to be replaced, the clock spring, etc. And even with used parts it will be costly.i live in the la area with a lot of traffic on every street. What frightens me is that i would likely have been killed had this happened while driving, and especially since i had first planned on going to a mall via freeway. This was a tragic accident waiting to happen. How many more of these steering wheels have fallen off unreported? how many more are ready to occur to some unlucky driver?
The belt keeps slipping off on my dodge caravan.this has been continual.the forums are full of these complaints.it is the serpentine belt.i have been back and forth to the mechanic.they try everything, but when it is wet, it comes off.i even try not to drive in rain, but after the rains, i drive a short distance and its off again., i called the dealership that seems to take no responsibility for this. This is really dangerous, as it is very hard to turn the wheel.fortunately so far, i have not been going at speed during these incidents.i had the tensioners tightened again last month, and its off again.
Steering column replaced on two occasions, third repair was done to rack and pinion however vehicle continues to experience problems ith steering.
No accident.
Consumer states that while driving at any speed on flat surface and no warning the steering wheel will lock up and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notifiedts
The serpentine belt popped off my 1998 dodge caravan, it is 02/10/10 -- the day of the blizzard.this happened before on the day of the blizzard in december.this leads to an immediate loss of power steering during the worst possible driving conditions.when i tried to find out what had happened in december, two mechanics at the dodge dealership both immediately knew what had happened.they said it happens all the time when ice or snow gets up under the car.i believe this is a very dangerous manufacturer's defect.loss of critical steering capability during the worst possible driving conditions.

While driving 40mph the steering wheel separated from the column.the vehicle has been repaired by an independent mechanic.
Design of the steering wheel is to high causing poor visibility of other instrument components and indicators.yh
This vehicle has multiply problems.consumer noticed that the air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.when pressing the horn it failed to come on its own. Also, smoke was coming from the steering column.the smoke extinguished itself out. No injuries reported. Hazard lights failed to come on.drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the horn assembly and air bags were separated problems, and the steering column was okay.no determination on the hazard lights was made. Consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred on numerous occasions, and had not been resolved.

Intermittent power steering assist failure.especially at low speeds and tight turns, like entering/exiting parking spots.

Power steering hoses failed.
Power steering hose.
Loss of control while attempting to turn caused vehicle to veer into oncomingtraffic. Vehicle towed to dealer, and infomed consumer that problem was due tosteeringbelt tensioner needing replacement. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
There is a leak in the power steering pump making it difficult to steervehicle.dealer has inspected vehicle. Dealer to replace power steering pump.
While driving the consumer heard a groaning noise.. The driver started to pull of f to the side of the road when she experienced a momentary loss of control.when the consumer's husband checked the power steering reservoir he noticed it was dry.upon further investigation the consumer found out that the bottom of the power steering pump had corroded through and the fluid leaked out through the housing.
Power steering has regularly cut off when turning at very low speeds and backing up. Vehicle has been returned to dealer 10 times. Steering gear in the rack and pinion has broken twice. It was replaced at 9 months of owner ship and has broken again in about the same amount of time since last replacement. The failure makes it almost impossible to steer at slow parking lot speeds and causes the van to wander on the highway. Dealer and chrysler have been notified but refuse to fix problem.
Rack and pinion causing noise.
The power steering rack & pinion has been replaced twice and the problem still persists.initially, we reported the problem to the dealer when van was brought in for 6,000 mile service and they advised it was normal.after a couple of months we brought the van back in for service regarding the same problem and they confirmed the problem.they then replaced the pressure hose.it was fine for a little while but the noise came back, so we brought it in to another dealer closer to home.they confirmed the problem and advised the rack & pinion needed to be replaced, so they did.after a week or so, the problem was still there.we brought it in again, and they told us they had to replace the rack & pinion again, and so they did (last week thursday 8/5/99).the noise/problem is still occurring.i have 2 friends who also purchased the same make/model and they also had similar problems (pressure hose replaced).today, her van failed to start (even after attempting to jump start).i would appreciate it if you can find out if anyone else is having problems with this make/model.thank you.

1998 dodge caravan strut tower is rusting through on passenger side. We had taken the vehicle in for front brake servicing and the mechanic informed us of the strut issue. He said this could cause steering and brake failure. If the problem is not corrected and the tower collapses while driving we will loose control of the steering and possible brakes.
The contact owns a 1998 dodge caravan. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle swerved to the right lane independently. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered corrosion throughout the frame. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.
Driver's compartment area is cramped and restrictive to the driver.
My 1998 dodge caravan(current mileage 108,000 miles) has severe corrosion around the top to the driver's side strut tower. It was first noticed by a mechanic last summer, but has since accelerated quickly and looks like a safety risk should the tower collapse into the engine compartment. I am concerned about any sudden failure. There is very mild corrosion in the same toparea of the other strut tower.i was told by a dodge dealer in st. Paul that chrysler was covering all or portions of select tower repairs. When i contacted chrysler today i was advised that this problem was not a subject of recall and, therefore, not covered whatsoever.i did find considerable info on this problem at an internet site called allpar.comwhich was quite helpful.
1998 dodge caravan front strut tower failure. The tower is collapsing on both sides of van.
There is a leak under vehicle.driver is concerned that this may cause a fire.please provide any further information.
I took my vehicle in for an inspection and the mechanic informed me that the upper strut towers on my 19998 dodge caravan are rusting through causing possible steering and brake failure.i was told if the problem is not corrected and the tower collapses while drive i will loose total control of steering and possible brakes.
My 1998 dodge van was in to my local dealer for some general service.i asked the mechanic about the considerable rust around the top of the driver side strut.he said that it had been a problem with some vans and that a service bulletin had been issued regarding.if the strut were to go break through the rusted cap it could cause an accident if not least major damage at highway speed.he printed me a copy of the chrysler service bulletin no. 23-044-02.a web search should considerable results on the bulletin number.i called chrysler customer service and spoke with rep# hm494.i first told the bulletin didn't exist, then when i demanded she search under the bulletin number she told me it didn't apply to my vehicle.the bulletins clearly states 1996-2000 nstown&country/voyger/caravan.hm494 then stated that service bulletins were only for technicians and mechanics.i explained that this was the problem.the important information directly related to driver & passenger safety that was issued in 2002 apparently was not intended to be given to the customer.personally i do not think hm494 was qualified to make the statements that represent chryslers customer service.i was also told because my caravan has 126,000 miles i should not expect anything from chrysler.my caravan would have only been 4years old at the time of the service bulletin.
Door locks not functional.one fell inside door panel.the other jammed.
Dt: air conditioning light is blinking; engine check and air bag light is on, nothing on the dash (speedometer etc) does not work. Door locks do not work; it's like it all went out at once.
Body molding on the passenger side slider is loose.
Symptoms of all 3 separate occurences are the same. For no apparent reason the door will remain locked and will not open with a remote entry system , with a key or manually from inside the car.the manual locking mechanism on the inside is physically jammed and will not respond to an unlocking action of any force.it occured to the drivers side door first around june '99,the passenger side front door around august '99 and today the passengers side cargo door.when it happened the first time in june i was unable to obtain an appointment within a reasonable time (was told they no longer take appts. And it's first come, first serve, may take one to three days).for that reason i took a crack at it myself by removing the part of the inner door panel that was accesible and awkwardly inspected the mechanism with a flashlight and dental mirror.if i remember correctly there are 2 solenoids and i could feel both of them energize when i operated the door mounted lock/unlock switch although neither one created any kind of linkage movement.after massaging the linkages and levers blindly for approx. 2 hrs. The door finally unlocked (reason unknown).when the front passenger door presented the same symptoms (noticed by primary driver ("the wife") ), it resolved itself by the end of the day after several trips around town and b4 i could check it out. Finally, this morning the pass. Side cargo door decided it was it's turn and currently remains in this state.i called the dealer tonight and they said they could look at it in the morning so i begrudgingly will not touch it.this irks me for 2 reasons, one is that they will have a much more unobstructed inspection because of the large open area around the door and secondly, i know i could probably figure this out in less time with a more concrete answer than i suspect i'll be given.additional info that may be of importance and always a possibility is an after market remote starting module that is operated from a remote

Major concern is about the strut housing roughing out been looking this up and from 97 to 2000 maybe a bit longer this has been a major issue that chrysler need to address. I know they don't want the responsibility of the matter ,but some one could get hurt from this.i just found out about this and have been searching all the information i can find on this issue.this is faulty design of chrysler, they made tons of money selling the vans, even after this started to happen they still didnt change the design.well i have to have mine done but in the mean time i better not get hurt from one letting loose. I survived cancer not to die from a auto accident do toa so so good design.

I went to the dealership where i had purchased the van in 1998 with the intent of researching the value for a trade in. First item they looked at was the shock towers in the front of the van. Showed me how they had almost rusted through, explaind to me how this was a common issue for this van, thus lowering the trade in value and also informing me as to the dangers involved. Which wer subsquently confirmed my a mechanic. The customer service at chrysler blew me off. There is no other rust on the van in this magnititude. Help please.

Our mechanic alerted us to an abnormal, excessive amount of rust on strut towers.he indicated that the suspension will fall out if not repaired in near future.additionally, he indicated that this vehicle will not pass inspection in its present condition.we contacted daimler chrysler regarding this issue.they suggested that we have our local dealership inspect the problem (preston dodge-butler, pa).the autobody manager there concurred with our mechanic's opinion and indicated because of the abnormality, that daimler chryser should pay for the repair of this problem.however, daimler chrysler has stated that they will not do so.

My accelerator stuck in my 98 dodge caravan.the throttle cable was frayed badly.the tow truck driver mentioned he towed about 50 dodge caravans in the last year with the same problem.the dealer where we got the part had "heard complaints about the accelerator."since this vehicle is the best selling mini van and moms, dads and usually a load of kids are in the back, this problem needs to be investigated and determine whether a recall is warrented.

While driving consumer lost the horn, cruise control, andair bag lightappeared on the dashboard. Dealer determinedclock spring failure.

As a concerned citizen, who handles the fleet for a state agency, i unhappy that nothing has been published from the manufactured as recalls to fix the problems which seems to happen around 35,000 miles or if the vehicle happens to be parked for anytime over two weeks.
My windshield wipers turn on even in the off position and i have had to remove the fuse so that they won't run continuously.i have a 1998 dodge caravan. The dealer can't seem to find the problem.i now have to drive without any windshield wipers or if it is raining i have to stop and open the hood and put the fuse back in...then they run continuously.this is very dangerous and i have noticed on the internet that i am not the only one with this problem.the dealer is now ordering a part called a bcm which costs $500 in hopes that it will fix the problem but they are not sure.
Windshield wipers have become intermittent and getting worse to the point of not coming on until the vehicle has been on for a half hour. This happened after the panel lights such as for the ac unit etc began to blink at a constant rate and then they steady out after 20 minutes.have gone to two dodge dealerships. First one had me pay for and replace multi-function switch and it did not fix the problem. Second dealer said i have to order a $500 body control module computer plus labor and it may not solve the problem and they said it is a non-refundable expense even if they cannot fix the wipers.it is extremely dangerous to not have wipers working and i feel irresponsible that a computer is necessary for the wipers to work. The ntsb should have the authority to order dodge to fix this situation at dodge's expense since it is an obvious serious design flaw.
