I ? failure of a recently routinely serviced transmission.i was told that driving in this condition would cause the system to lock up and create other failures (axle).am i alone in this problem,also, i had received a recall on the van for airbag problem - it also listed on the form in very small print that the rear wiper may also have to be serviced/replaced attheir discretion i believe. 94 dodge caravan involved in traffic accident with 86 chevy nova (vehicle #2). Driver of vehicle #2 was oui (drunk driving) and turned into intersection against red light. Dodge caravan proceeding thru intersection on green light was unable to avoid collision due to proximity of vehicle #2. Caravan sustained extensive front end damage (car deemed total loss by insurance company). Neither airbag (driver side or passenger) deployed during the collision.

However, a couple months later at 71,725 miles consumer received recall notice (99v-113) regarding wiring that indicates the driver / passenger side airbag failed which could be the cause of other electrical components failure. I have had 4 transmissions replaced by a ri dealership, because the dealership in massachusetts where this vehicle was purchased went out of business.the latest transmission was put in on june 11th 1999.the transmission previous to that was put in in april 1999.at the time the transmission was replaced in april, i picked up the vehicle at the dealership after hours and when i started the vehicle i immediately knew that a bad transmission was replaced by antother bad transmission!i have made numerous calls to the 800 telephone # in my owners manual and have had many differant complaint case numbers assigned.i have sent an e-mail message to the district manager for this area for chrysler and have made more than 2 dozen requests and demands that she contact me regarding this lemonthat i spent $17,000. On!i have not had any luck.the fuse for my air bags which also controls the rear windshield wiper has blown for the second time and i now have no airbags!i have not had a working float in my gas tank since i hit the 12,000 mile mark, now i have no air conditioning.i have not used it all that much and have had it recharged and it still does not work.this car has been a lemon since i purchased it.i keep asking the people at chrysler and have been asking since 1995, who i may talk to or write to for some satisfaction, but they won't cooperate. N i do not know who to talk to.i am very nervous driving this vehicle, when the third transmission blew we were on our way home ona major highway, we lost power and our speed dropped to around 20 miles per hour, we were lucky to make it to safety! my son was very scared.please help, thank you.

Transmission would always jerk when shifting.dealer told us that was natural for that transmission.after two years, transmission completely failed and had to be replaced.previously we owned a 1990 dodge caravan and also had to replace transmission at approximately 80000 miles.since then we have been told by several transmission specialists that this is common in caravans.also the bolt holding the engine fan in place has had to replaced twice as it falls out.we did catch the problem both times when the engine overheated while idling.

It stalls suddenly from time to time -"check gauges"light is on at this point - sometimes once a week, sometimes once a month, sometimes twice a week, sometimes ... You never know when!. I can restart it easy, but it does not hold on idle, and stalls immediately.if i step at this moment at gas pedal, and while keeping rpm around 1000, shift into drive, it runs ok as it never had any problems....only until next time... I turn off all electric devices: radio, fan, lights while restarting it. That seems like not make any differences.i have noticed that it started doing so after dealer replaced electronic module for air bags according to safety service notice from chrysler, or it's just a coincidence. I got reading stopping the enginenormally, it is55, then next time it stalled i got the reading again, it was the same as in normal situation - 55.

I have had 4 transmissions replaced by a ri dealership, because the dealership in massachusetts where this vehicle was purchased went out of business.the latest transmission was put in on june 11th 1999.the transmission previous to that was put in in april 1999.at the time the transmission was replaced in april, i picked up the vehicle at the dealership after hours and when i started the vehicle i immediately knew that a bad transmission was replaced by antother bad transmission!i have made numerous calls to the 800 telephone # in my owners manual and have had many differant complaint case numbers assigned.i have sent an e-mail message to the district manager for this area for chrysler and have made more than 2 dozen requests and demands that she contact me regarding this lemonthat i spent $17,000. On!i have not had any luck.the fuse for my air bags which also controls the rear windshield wiper has blown for the second time and i now have no airbags!i have not had a working float in my gas tank since i hit the 12,000 mile mark, now i have no air conditioning.i have not used it all that much and have had it recharged and it still does not work.this car has been a lemon since i purchased it.i keep asking the people at chrysler and have been asking since 1995, who i may talk to or write to for some satisfaction, but they won't cooperate. Air conditioner failed,van was brought into dealer and i was told it was going to be about 1000 dollars to repair.the vehicle was just out of warranty and i did not have the money to get the components repaired,i was told that the evaporator was clogged and that the condensor had to be replaced because the freon had leaked out.after getting back the car from the dealer the compressor locked up from lack of lubrication from the oil that is in the freon. Now my latest estimate to repair the air conditioner is 2500 dollars. I feel that there should have been no reason for this problem to occur.the van has been to the dealer for every service imaginable and never once was i told that the air conditioner needed any kind of maintenance.not even in the owners manual is there any mention of air conditioner maintenance.

A/c evaporator failed after only 2.5 years, $800 to repair, chrysler agreed to pay half, many other complaints.in my opinion, it is a design defect.

Several times i reported the problem to arrigo but they could never find a problem.then the air conditioning went out and they said too bad, not there problem.i have records of every time i was there for service telling them that the squealing noise sounded like a compressor leak.i'm just very disappointed that they do not care about their customers once the vehicle is purchased.

The fuel filter was replaced twice because of leakage. Once in may of 97 and once in august of 98. The filter is located very close to the cataylic converter. The dealer not aware of the problem.

When driving consumer noticed the clock/ radio/ headlights and windshield wipers were flashing off and on without operator controling the components. Seatbelt gets stuck indoor path;when entering vehicle seatbelt is loose, and won't protectoccupant in a crash.also, problm withdoor latch striker which the occupant must slamdoor in order to shut. Akbecause the belt retractor spring was weak, the driver seat belt has about a foot of slack.
Windshield motor (rear) was recalled, vehicle taken to dealership. I tried to open the hood of my minivan and the release broke off. The release was on the inside of the 1994 dodge minivan and i don't know what caused it to break off. I've checked the safety defect notifications for "1994 dodge minivans" and could not find any other mentions of failure of the hand release for the vehicles' hoods.

Four speed od transmissions in the chrysler vans seem to be failing ata high rate at about 100k miles.when i inquired to several repair shops about getting my transmission fixed, they all told me that the problem i am experiencing is common in the chrysler vans.every mechanic told me that it is a combination of manufacturing defect and poor quality parts used in the manufacture of the transmissions.one shop in particular has been replacing these transmissions on the magnitude of 70-80 per year.additionally,i happen to have6 neighbors who own or have owned '92-'95 chrysler vans with the od transmission and have needed replacement assemblies anywhere from 60k to 100k (my next door neighbor had hers replaced 3 times, she finally traded it in for a nissan van).one mechanic, after performing $1000 worth of work replacing the axles, tie rod ends, brakes, rotors, struts (complete), tires, and alignment, told me to "dump"the van because not only do they have transmission failures, but they have valve guide failures with the 3.0l engine starting around 100k miles.he told me $3000 to fix the transmission and another $2000 when the valve guide (plastic) failure occurs.i might add that i've done all scheduled maintenance ahead of manufacturers recommended intervals.i am certain that this is a problem that chrysler has known about for at least 5 years and perhaps longer and based on conversations with several repair shops, chrysler has done nothing to make the design flaw right..i did not buy my $20,000 vehicle to have it fail at 95k miles. In my research i have found several thousand transmission failures at low mileage.the manufacturer is also including upgraded parts to be used in an overhaul.to me if you need to upgrade a component in order for it to perform properly, it was defective to begin with!

It has been regularly serviced and is maintained in very good condition. It is used to commute to work and as a family car without any towing or heavy loads.regular transmission service and checkup has been performed with last one before the failure at72456 miles. No problems were found at this service, otherwise i would have taken appropriate action. The failure happened in an office underground parking lot and the car would not move when my wife tried to park it. It had to be towed to the dealer for repairs. This could have happened while driving on a busy highway or on a busy street and could have been dangerous to her safety and to other people on the road.i researched into the issue on the internet and found alot ofchrysler/dodge caravan owners with similar problems over the years. I even talked to friends and people i know who are caravan owners and several told me it is a known problem with these transmissions but chrysler has failed to remedy the problem. Failures even happen at lower mileage than my vanand to older models. Replaced transmissions are also known to fail with low mileage in several cases that i came across.i have filed a complaint with chrysler on this matter and the ridiculous cost of $2500 that i had to pay to replace the transmission with a remanufactured one. The dealer that checked the problem on my van found that there were 4 problems found including worn out clutches and he had no explanation for the failure. Chrysler informed me that there is no recall on this problem at this time but they may have one later on. I strongly believe that chrysler/dodge is well aware ofthis defect problem andthat it is also a safety hazard. Chrysler should issue a recall and replace the transmissions with a better designed one for the sake of safety to their customers and other people on the road.

I have had 4 transmissions replaced by a ri dealership, because the dealership in massachusetts where this vehicle was purchased went out of business.the latest transmission was put in on june 11th 1999.the transmission previous to that was put in in april 1999.at the time the transmission was replaced in april, i picked up the vehicle at the dealership after hours and when i started the vehicle i immediately knew that a bad transmission was replaced by antother bad transmission!i have made numerous calls to the 800 telephone # in my owners manual and have had many differant complaint case numbers assigned.i have sent an e-mail message to the district manager for this area for chrysler and have made more than 2 dozen requests and demands that she contact me regarding this lemonthat i spent $17,000. On!i have not had any luck.the fuse for my air bags which also controls the rear windshield wiper has blown for the second time and i now have no airbags!i have not had a working float in my gas tank since i hit the 12,000 mile mark, now i have no air conditioning.i have not used it all that much and have had it recharged and it still does not work.this car has been a lemon since i purchased it.i keep asking the people at chrysler and have been asking since 1995, who i may talk to or write to for some satisfaction, but they won't cooperate. The metal fatigue of this part is suspect since we have had no accidents or collisions. Failure of this part prevents the seatbelt from working properly and could actually cause a fatal accident if this failure had occurred during highway driving. We have been trying to get this part repaired since february of 2001. We were told that this part number had changed 17 times and was on back order. Finally, after having to return to the dealer to re-repair the airconditioner, we called the chryserler manufacturer to see how we could solve the problem. They informed us that the part had never been ordered. Now the cost of the part has increased from $25.00 to $143.00. This is a serious safety issue and we have found no recourse for a solution. Please advise us of steps that need to be taken to bring this problem to the attention of other dodge caravan owners.

Two abs problems: 1) the system activates intermittently and prematurely whether the vehicle is coming to a stop or merely slowing in traffic and at all speeds - even below 15mph. When the system activates, there is sudden pedal fade accompanied most often by a grinding noise and a noticeable sudden surge forward as braking is reestablished. The aforementioned dealership has thrown nearly $800 worth of parts at the problem over the past two weeks including replacing a 'defective' rr wheel sensor and the abs motor system and recommended more than $600 additional expenses such as replacing the two rear drums, having new brakes installed and buying new tires. (i had the rear brakes and drums checked by another mechanic who assures me that all are well withing specifications. I did buy 4 new tires.)the problem is worse after the repairs than it was previously. The dealer says that chrysler says that it is normal for the abs to 'kick-in' on rough pavement. The fact that it also engages on smooth surfaces at speeds under 15 mph doesn't seem to register. 2) the abs lite comes on and the system disengages intermittently under all road conditions. Two nights ago, on relatively smooth pavement, it disengaged seven times in a five mile stretch at speeds of 35mph or less.

While driving on interstate in traffic, i ran over a metal object with the left front tire and subsequently heard a thud under the vehicle, but everything seemed to be ok. I drove another 20 miles @ 60 to 70 mph with no indication of problems, until i applied my brakes to get of at my home exit. At that time the check brakes failure light came on and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor with essentially no stopping action. I finally stopped the vehicle with the emergency brake. Upon inspection, i found that the object that i had run over (a relatively small metal object)had hit the exposed brake lines where they connect to a proportioning valve assembly about half way between the left front and left rear wheels. Although there was a small metal and rubber gard to protect the brake lines, they were insufficient and the metal object bent the gard and broke both brake lines that came from the master brake cylinder to feed the rear brakes. Although the vehicle has a dual master cylinder, since one cylinder feeds the back right brake and the other feeds the back left brake (while also feeding the opposite front brake), the failure of the gard to protect the lines resulted in total brake system failure. Fortunately, i was not in a critical stopping situation, or a serious accident could have occurred. My feeling is that the placement of these exposed brake lines driectly in line behind the front wheel with relatively little protection, resulting in common mode failure of the entire brake system is an unsafe situation, and better protection should be considered. With as many of these sinilar vehicles on the road, i would be interested in knowing how many such incidents have been reported. I almost let this go by without reporting it, so i am sure that it must to have happened many more time than the number of reports that you may have received. Thanks, norris crawford.

This is the second transmission failure in this vehical.both have occured at about 70,000 miles.this is a famous problem now with these vehicals.countless mechanics have told me that these transmissions "go" at about 70,000 miles. The web has pages dedicated to the fact that these transmissions fail.the government should make a concentrated effort to investigate this issue before there are more accidents that put our taxpaying lives at risk.you should look up pages on the internet that will demonstrate a consistant pattern of transmission failure at or near 70,000 miles.also an investigation should look at the rack and pinion steering problems for which there is an entirely different set of web pages dedicated to these problems.the bottom line is that these engineering problems are costing owners of these cars enourmoos amounts of money and severely jeoprodizing peoples' saftey!!there must be some recourse for the shoddy engineering of chrysler/dodge!!don't stop at just the airbag problems!!the large amount of famlies who own chrysler/dodge mini-vans and the serious saftey problems- imagine the transmission slipping into 2nd at fifty on an icy mn road,or the steering coming loose passing at 60mph - that these cars exhibit at regular intervals should be enough reason to start an investigation.

Driver side door opened while rounding a bend causing me to almost fall out of the vehicle, if it hadn't been for the seat belt i would have fallen out. After the door opened i swerved loosing control however ther wasn't an on coming vehicle at the time.from the force of the door swinging open both of the joints broke off and the service man at our local dealer informed us that he sees many of these problems on the 1994/1995 models. I had all of the recalls done to date including the rear latch, that i never had a problem with . I have also had to replace the 02 sensor. I fell this could have been far worse if there would have been an on coming car at the time, we were very lucky.

I and 3 others i know have had our sliding doors become stuck open and /or fall off .it starts with becoming hard to close and then imposible. The slide guide fell off my car .my husband was able to fix it now it's starting to jam again so i am taking it in.just weeks after my insident my friends door actually fell off in my drive way. I was leaving church on 6-11-00 and had 5 other passangers in the car.the last passanger into the car was having difficulty closing the sliding door so i got out to do it.the door was indeed difficult to close and as i managed to get the door almost closed, it fell off of the tracking and landed on my feet.my feet were hurt as well as bad scraping to my arm as i tried to catch the door when it started to fall.i was in total shock at having a door fall off.we couldn't get the door back on and had to drive with the door off.i had two children and two elderly passangers in the van besides myself and my friend.i had no other way of getting the vehicle home so had to drive it this way.when we got home we managed to get the door back onto the track but could not open the door again as it was inoperable.i called chrysler and was told that there was not a recall on this but they would look into helping me get this repaired outside of the warranty as they said that they do this from time to time.when i brought the car to papa's dodge where i bought the van i was told that they called chrysler credit and were told that i would have to pay for the part and the repair at the cost of around 300.00.a service technician told my friend privately that they have had a problem with this happening with this model van.i had been told by the service manager that this problem had never occurred before.this is a safety problem.doors don't just fall off of cars!i was told that the rollers had eroded.this should be covered under unusual wear.one can't tell me that everybody who owns a dodge caravan will have their door fall off after 6 years of ownership.i don't agree that i should have to pay for this.this is not normal wear and tear, this is abnormal.my children now have to crawl through the front of the car to get to their seats.i am also in fear of the door falling off while i am driving until i can get this fixed.please help.

(only thing keeping it off the ground was one bent hinge.i took the van to the dealer from which i purchased it.the dealer would not admit to manufacture fault.however, i was able to get them to lower the bill to fix the door from $303 to $133.i still believe that this is a safety hazard, caused by a structural design flaw in the sliding door. Nhtsa recall campaign 99v213000,the bolt to the hatch broke, causing the piston to break in half. A stick must be usedto hold the hatch up. Consumer was aware of recall for this particular model.

Recall related, 95i001005,structure liftgate assembly failure,vehicle impact 6:00, position and lifgate popped open and unlatched.consumer was waiting on inside lane for traffic ahead of her when she was struck from behind, after vehicle rear ended her, she looked at the gear shift and noticed the lift gate light on the dash had come on showing it was open, consumer took vehicle to dealer and s he was informed that the ligt gate did not have the shims, which were part of a recall kit which was not on the vehicle, so the ligt gate latch had to be replaced for the second time. My wife tried to have two new tires installed on the front axle of her van and was told there was a new dot regulation prohibiting front-mounting of two tires. This makes no sense in a vehicle that is front-heavy, of which there are a substantial number on the road. The installer mentioned something about understeer and controllability and the ford/firestone flap (he wasn't too sure). If that is the reason it sounds to me as if bad science and media hype are dictating policy. I suspect that excessive speed, overloading, and neglected maintainence caused a majority of the ford/firestone failures. Traveling along the interstate, vibration developed.pulled over & examined all 4 tires/wheels.no foreign matter, lugs tight, wheels tight, no visible tire/wheel trbl.tire press set to mfg recommended 35psi.did not strike any road debris.after another 20 miles, tread peeled away damaging wheel well mouldings, rear bumper, & side paint finish.tire retained pressure.was able to pull vehicle over safely & stop.tire pressure verified at replacement.photos of tire & vehicle available.approx 10k miles on tire. As i slowly was turning the car to park in a parking lot in vienna va shopping center, the van suddenly accelerated on its own and stopped when it crashed into handicap parking pole marker ( no damage). Damage to my van which is visable appears to bethe front ofthe hood of the car and a damaged but functioning radiator as best i can see. The paint is peeling off the roof of the van (the roof is now almost bare, a year later) and now has begun to peel off the hood, as well. We contacted our local dodge dealer and they said that this is not covered by any sort of warranty or lemon law and that we would have to pay to repaint the van.other than the paint problem... The van is in excellent condition other than the fact that soon it will no longerhave any paint. It is a dark blue color, and we have seen many other dodge grand caravans from that same year with exactly the same problem. This has happened multiple times over the last year. What made me report this one is someone else out there is experiencing the same problem see report 724620.at any speed you remove your foot from the accelerator and the engine dies.this tends to happen when the weather is wet. One incident happened when driver was turning corner and engine stalled lost power steering and drove off on to shoulder.started engine and continued on to have it happen more times on down the road.it can go weeks without it happening or may happened many time in succession. Rear window on lift gate shattered in a thousand pieces for no reason while parked (glass inside and outside). Outside temp was about 20 f and cloudy. Glass type is a privacy tinted with window defroster. It appears glass was not required to be a safety glass type as compared to a windshield with a "plastic sandwich in-between. About 10 hours of clean up required. Many small glass fragments and "glass dust" traveled as far as the front dashboard. Owner will be replacing glass. Cost estimated to be between $300 to $400 parts and labor. I have pictures available if needed .

When making a left hand turn at about 2 mph, the middle passenger's window exploded for no apparent reason.
The seals/molding around the windows and gas tank are melting and causing the rubber to melt. I think the stuff thats melting is getting in the gas because the car acts like there is something in the gas. The molding around the widows melts and the black melts all over the paint.

Vehicle was remedied by dealer. Dealer stated that the rear windshield wiper motor was shorted out,causing the air bag light to come on and disabling the airbag, the fuse would blow out.
Windshield wipers failed. The spring ground on the motor became disconnected.consumer states that the electrical circuit becomes disconnected while using the windshield wipers, this only happens when the wipers are needed to be on, a mechanic has to retighten the ground wire to the wiper motor with a wrench.
