Several 'near' accidents before we were made aware that our 99 dodge avenger rear lighting was not working properly. Tail & brake lights have suddenly stopped working, and (or) stay lit all the time at frequent intervals. Had to have the "activator connections" repaired, batteries constantly being drained/replaced, front fog lighting burned out on 3 separate occasions/replaced. Was told by mechanics that the cars "wiring was pulling more voltage than it should". Had to remove fuses to ac, etc... To prevent batteries from being drained. Repaired again on 10/15/08 and now experiencing same problems with lighting.
The 1999 dodge avenger was parked outside my work when it burst into flames. Fire department arrived and was able to put the fire out. I was told that it was electrical, no one was injured. My car is now totaled and was told if i would of been driving i would of been killed, the fire was out of control. I filed report with chrysler and was told that it would be investigated; however, they were unable to give me the number of their investigation department for me to follow up on this matter.
1999 dodge avengerautomatic: wont shift into drive gear-rpms rev up and do not shift in next gearalso alarm system -horn, lights all go on for no reason.
Have replaced brake pads and tires numerous times. Check engine light stays on, except for when it starts blinking(will blink 100 times or more before it stays illuminated) maintenance schedule has been followed, most things were replaced before scheduled. Door handle broke off when opening the unlocked door. The car now stalls at red lights and sometimes does not want to start at all.the car does not idle correctly ever, usually about 300 rpms.
Battery dies for no apparent reason..happened twice in 1 week.
When driving vehicle would hesitate and stall out. Would stall out even at stop sign or light. Also, vehicle would vibrate after 60mph. Have taken it to dealership about 5 times for problem, but not resolved for stalling. Hadbrakes checked, androtors replaced.
I am a auto mechanic and unfortunately own a 1999 dodge avenger 2.5l v6 auto. The engine is junk. It has had an intermittent misfire since before i bought it. Chrysler knows they put a faulty camshaft sensor inside the distributor so when it does fail which it does in every 6 cycle avenger, the stealership tries to tell customers that the sensor cannot be replaced and you have to get a new distributor assembly which they charge $ 1500 for parts and labor. You can't buy one anywhere else because of the faulty cam sensor problem and they do this intentionally to get you to spend money on chrysler parts. They put the cam sensor in the distributor because they knew that magnetic interference from the ignition coil would cause the sensor to fail. When this happens the check engine light flashes more and more the worse the sensor gets. That is just the start of the engine problems. Once the cam sensor fails the timing gets offset and over time causes the valves to get bent by the pistons, after that it's bye bye heads and no car unless you buy a better car. If they would put the cam sensor where it belongs, i wouldn't be writing this. Chevy from now on.
Multiple problems with this car since purchase.unknown engine failure problem (dealership was unable to pinpoint problem), transmission sensors failed, rotors replaced 8 times in 4 years, black tar coming from doors, numerous alignment problems, and the big problem - the seat belt buckles keep failing.passenger side replaced by dealership under warranty.driver side now failing as well.huge safety hazard!dealership says "car not under warranty".

Multiple repairs done to this vehicle. Has been at dealership in louisville 6 times and continues to be a mystery.. Replaced parts, and still can't find the problem. Stalls, stutters, and jerks viciously when in drive.will stall and is uncontrollable even at speeds of 35 mph. Constant problems and feel very unsafe in this vehicle... Feel very taken advantage of by buying this vehicle and getting no satisfaction from dodge at all.
Engine service light illuminted, possible engine failure.
The contact owns a 1999 dodge avenger. The contact stated that the plastic head light cover became extremely foggy. The contact had to utilize the high beam lights in order to get proper illumination of the roadway. The contact located nhtsa campaign id number: 09e025000 (exterior lighting: headlights) but was advised that his vin was not included with the recall. The contact stated the manufacturer should be responsible for the repairs of the headlights since this is a known safety defect. The failure mileage was 55,000.
While going down the road about 45mphvehicle jerks violently. It feels likedriver isslammingon the brakes, althoughdriver is not applying the brakes at all.also, checked transmission fluid, and noticed that there was fragments of metal pieces.contacteddealer, will havevehicle towed.this is the third time this has happened. The second time it was taken to the dealer, and they replaced transmission on 03-apr-2000, and nowit has to go back to the shop.
I have a 1999 dodge avenger sport (2.5l auto). At 48,000 miles the torque converter failed on my automatic transmission (infamous a604 transmission). Dodge refused a goodwill repair, the car is just out of warranty, and i feel that it is ridiculous for a car that is 3 years old with barely any mileage to require a transmission rebuild. I have seen many people have suffered from similar problems with their a604/41te transmission (look to bbs.asog.net under transmission forum). I also know this transmission has been defective going back to it's introduction in 1989. When is enough enough, and when will chrysler be held responsible for this? not to mention that i almost died when the limp-home-mode switched on as i was traveling 70 mph on i-95 (the car automatically switched into second gear from fourth, the car behind me almost crashed into the rear of my car, and this caused damage to my engine). I did not get into an accident or cause any fatalities, but i cannot see how this transmission or limp-home-mode is safe. How can they sell a transmission that dies under 50,000 miles?
I have a 1999 dodge avenger. I bought the car in 2004 and i had the heads done on it. The transmission started acting up in 2005 and is still giving me problems. Sometimes it won't change into second until i turn the car off and restart it. The o2 sensors keep going out. The check engine light is always coming on. I am a single parent and cannot afford to keep fixing this car nor can i afford a new car. The brakes keep wearing out. I am having so many problems out this car that i don't know what to do. The shocks and struts are out.the half shaft is messed up again. I need so help with some of this repairs. 1999 dodge avengerautomatic: wont shift into drive gear-rpms rev up and do not shift in next gearalso alarm system -horn, lights all go on for no reason.
Transmission seals failed while driving. Vehicle stopped shifting correctly, just stuck in second gear.consumer states that the brakes failed and rotors warped at 18000 miles.
Transmission failed to shift out of first gear properly and downshifted harshly, to the point i cringed at the sound. Upon replacing original tires local mechanic notified me of a worn wheel bearing at right front being ase certified myself i inspected the part and came to the same conclusion
Have been told that the transmission casing is cracked and leaking transmission oil. This was found during an inspection of the front end, where there was noise when turning steering toward the left.also, included in defective rim settlement class action matter.

Transmission would be sluggish when gas pedal is pressed. There are no leaks. Fails to change gears properly. Took to dealer & had diagnostic check, with dye, done. No problem found. Mechanic replaced transmission. Also had brake disc replaced due to excessive wear.

The driver seats back welding had broken away from the frame, with the bolt still tightened.which resulted in the seat back reclining backwards.*scc
There is a problem with the construction of the front seats in my 1999, dodge, avenger, probably dealing with faulty welds in the frame.on july 1, 2003, after having the seat leaned forward to access the back seat, i returned the seat to its normal upright locked position.however, the seat continued to recline farther than its proper locked position (i keep it at roughly an 80-degree angle, and it improperly reclined to roughly a 65-degree angle).i checked with the dealership, and the service personnel said the frame likely bent, and that it would be at least $450 (for parts) plus labor to replace it.he suggested installing a used seat as a replacement to save money, which i recently purchased and am hoping to install soon.when i wrote chrysler customer service, they said they wouldn't fix it or replace it because it was out of its three-year warranty (the car is just under four years old and has roughly 54,000 miles on it).needless to say, i was disappointed in their response.today, i was in my car and reached for my wallet.a popping sound came from the seat, and it reclined fully.this is absolutely unacceptable.i have checked the internet and have come up with at least two other instances of the same problem, one where a gentleman reached for his wallet and the seat reclined (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/dodge_avenger.htm) and one where a gentleman was driving down the road and his seat reclined (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/grncamaro/ownerse8.htm).i am concerned that since i am not the only person to have this problem, it is a manufacturing defect, and i want chrysler to fix this problem.
When the vehicle was at a stop, the driver's side seat back broke and went backwards.the seat only locked all the way back or all the way forward.the consumer leaned back to retrieve his debit card from his front pocket, and the driver side fsb recline broke away from the gold bolts and also the weld to the fsb tube assembly.(tire-gt-h m-s) *scc

I have had the rotors replaced on my car three times in the last few months.they have made the remark to me that they have rotor problems with these cars and i should try not to use my brakes.also i have window leaking problems which the car was back several times for this and then they tell me it is in the owners manual that the windows leak.

Applied brakes at 40 mph, no braking action.pedal went to floor, vehicle still at dealer. The dealer replaced the rotors.the front end vibrates after being repaired.
Consumerhad inspectedbrakes, andfound out that brake rotors had suffered premature wear.dealer had replacedrotors four times.
I have had brake and rotor problems when the car reached 14,000 miles, i then replaced the brakes, i have been experiencing severe pulsation when the brakes are applied, i replaced the front rotors at 28,000 miles, (at my expense)now the back rotors have begun the severe pulsation and will have to replace those rotors as well( at my expense). Since the warranty does not cover this. I used the emgergency brake once and couldn't disengage the brake and my car was stranded. I also experienced the emergency brakes freezing up which the dealership replaced under warranty.i was complaining to the dealership about smoke coming from the tire wellfrom the drivers side back tire.on march 8,april 5ththey resurfaced the back rotors, and told me if i continue to experience the severe pulsation the back rotors will need replaced.i have never encountered problems like this ever,i always purchase new cars for their warranty and dodge's warranty is not up my standards.

Since purchasing the vehicle approximately 2 years ago, the brake pads and rotors have not been effective.the brakes were replaced 2 times within the first 15,000 driven.when trying to administer the brakes whether it be a lighted intersection or slowing down for traffic ahead, it is very difficult to stop the car no matter how far early the brakes are applied.this is unacceptable and dangerous.within the first month of ownership, the driver side window sounded as though it were cracked open slightly, yet the windows were fully closed.the first time the car was dropped off for service, the weatherstripping was replaced.this helped very little.the car was brought back to the dealer, when they finally found that there was a screw inthe door that was broken and needed replacing.this caused the window not to fully close.since i have owned the car, it has been back to the dealer for service over 10 times (not including regualr maintenance - oil changes, etc).i understand that brakes are part of regular maintenance of any vehicle, but i believe that there is a defect with the brake system on this particular vehicle.i also own a gm vehicle, but my brake pads last for at least 20,000 miles.
When traveling 60mph or better car is hard to stop/recall on brakes in 2000.
The discs are a known problem on the avenger, they wear out too fast.

The rotors and brake pads on my 1999 dodge avenger wear out very quickly (less than 10,000 miles).i have read two possible explanations: a malfunctioning brake sensor is keeping the brakes engaged slightly and creating excess heat and wear; the rotors were originally designed for the mitsubishi eclipse (a significantly smaller and lighter car then the avenger) and are not large enough to handle the braking needs of the avenger.it is clear from this and many other automobile complaint sites that this is a common problem with the sebring and avenger models.in light of the recent cover ups mitsubishi is accused of perpetrating regarding recalls, it is imperative that this issue be made public and that both dodge and mitsubishi work to rectify the problem.*la

I bought an avenger after my intrepid was wrecked in 12-2000.when i owned the intrepid, which was purchased in feb. 2000, i brought it in to the dealer within a couple of months to be checked because there was a vibration in the front end, esp. When braking while going down a steep hill.i felt the rotors might be warping.after paying a $25.00 inspection fee, the service manager said that his mechanic could not find any vibration in the rotors. I stated that they would need to drive the car down a steep hill.the manager stated that brakes were not covered after 12,000 miles anyway.a couple of months later, i noticed that there was a loud squeal coming from the brakes when stopping at anytime.i went back to the dealer.i mentioned that the vibration was still happening and the tires, which were newwhen the car was purchased, were going bald because of uneven braking.the service manager said the manufacturer puts on brake pads made of very hard materialwhich causes the squeal when hot.he also stated that the only remedy would be to replace their pads with generic pads from a brake shop, at my expense.i ran into a fellow who seemed to know a lot about cars who told me that extra hard brake pads can cause rotors to warp because they get extremely hot when breaking.but how do you prove the manufacturer has caused this rotor defect by using faulty brake pads?now,i have purchased a dodge avenger in feb. 2001 (as i stated earlier) because the intrepid was wrecked.the'99 avenger also had approx. 13,500 mi. When purchased.guess what?...the avenger is in the shop right now getting the rotors ground down because of vibrations.this time, the mechanic could feel the vibrations because we rode down a hill.the mechanic stated that he had the same rotor trouble with his chrysler sebring at 11,000 miles.it seems the chrys. Corp. Should remedy this rotor situation because they have caused this problem in many of their cars.

The exterior door handles keep breaking while opening the door. There are 2 plastic pieces on each side of the door handle that ( when pulled up to open the door from the outside ) they are attached to the equipement inside the door panel that released the latch and opend the door.those two plastic pieces keep breaking, therefore not allowing the door hinges to release and open the door. I replaced the driver side in early 2002 ( a dealer item only and cost $ 90.00 without instillation ).two weeks ago, the passenger side broke and i tried to fix it (by placing a screw between the two plastic pieces and then applying super glueing over the screw).today the (new) driver side broke while i was out shopping ( same pieces as the first time )i went to the passenger side of the car and i broke as well ( but this time it held where i super glued it ) , the complete outside bar (that rises while opening the door) broke off in my hand.the only way i was able to get into my car was to slide my arm down the inside of the window ( since i had left them cracked ). I currently cannot open either door from the outside unless my windows are rolled down.
In the last three months door handlesbroke off while opening the doors.

I feel that rick perez auto net dealership has sold me a defective car. 2 weeks after i bought this car i had to return it for several different defects. I have looked up the lemon law and it states that there must be a reoccurring problem. On my car it is several things, some of them have occurred more than once. I had to replace my brakes 6 months after i got the car caused by a vibration from the front end and have replaced them a total of 3 times since i got the car. 1 year after i got the car, had to get new tires put on due to wearing of the treads and losing air in the front tires, again due to the vibration, i paid for that. Both of my door handles, driver and passenger side popped completely off of the car during routine entry. My belt always squeaks and had to be replaced twice. My dome light only works when it wants to, and both of my transmission sensors have gone out causing my car to shift improperly or not even shift at all. The drivers seat belt will not stay closed and pops off during driving,(not covered under the warranty now). A black tar substance was getting all over my clothes, finally figured out that it was coming from my door jams, replaced some sealstwice (the tar doesnt come out of my clothes).i have also taken my car several times for the suspension.pulled to the left, all the time thinking that it was an alignment problem. The car has been on the "rack" " many times and the dealership reported that the car was in alignment according to "specs". Most recently my boyfriend noticed a puddle of oil on the top of my engine and down in the holes where my spark plugs go. I took the car in and the said they were going to have to replace the head gasket and the rear main seal. Well, guess what?? they did the repair and now my car is leaking oil in my driveway (it was not doing that before they fixed it). Addition i can smell burning oil. My car now has a serious problem during idle and take off, again, this was not happening before.
0nfirst night driving the vehicle off the lot noticed vehicle pulling to the right. Dearel can't duplicate the problem after 3 times. Please prove further informaton.
My car has pulled to the left constantly and consistantly since the day i bought it.it has been in the dealership over 10 times to correct the problem, all the time thinking that it was an alignment problem.the car has been on the "rack" many times and the dealership reported that the car was in alignment according to "specs".the last trip to the dealership resulted in a camber kit being installed on the front right control arm.the pull is not as prominant , but is still present.the dealership has informed us that there is nothing else they can or will do under warranty.

I got a flat tire and i thought it was a nail. But there was a pair of pliers inside of the tire, underneath the rim. This had to have been there before i bought the car because the head of the pliers would not fit into one of the holes in my rims. Upon contacting chrysler consumer hotline, i was lied to, told that goodyear ships the tires and the rims. They obviously don't want to do anything to satisfy an unsatisfied customer. I had to spend 120 dollars for a new tire. I think that they should do something about this. They are totally trying to run around me and blame it on someone else. Please help me.( dot number: tire size: 55r16 )
Right front tire loses air frequently, dealer was not able to find any problems, however a service manager at a tire store stated the problem was that the tire rims needed to be applied with bead seals and new valve stems, consumer was told by dodge to go to another facility that does not take appointments and is about 30 miles from consumer, consumer is still experiencing tire leakage and recently one of the wheel covers was lost while driving.
The clear coat pelled off and made milky white spots all over the roof and trunk
Dealer states i must by new seat belt that they are not under warranty.safety issued that should be covered well beyond 50,000 miles. Mr

The consumer experienced sudden acceleration. The vehicle suddenly accelerated from 800 rpm's to 4500 rpm's within seconds. The consumer had both feet on the brakes, but the vehicle kept going. The consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer and had the input/output sensor replaced. However, the sudden acceleration recurred.provide further details.
I have had the rotors replaced on my car three times in the last few months.they have made the remark to me that they have rotor problems with these cars and i should try not to use my brakes.also i have window leaking problems which the car was back several times for this and then they tell me it is in the owners manual that the windows leak.
Rubberseal around the front windshieldwouldmeltinto the vehicle during hot weather condition, dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
I have had to replace at least 5 wheel lugs. Everytime i have my tires taken off for replacement or rotation or to replace my brake pads, etc. A lug will break due to a defect in the way the lugs were originally installed.i have had to pay for these replacements and it isn't cheap.i think because of this problem it should be a recall since it is a defect in the part or how it was installed.
I am the owner of a 1999 dodge avenger es with 17" silver 5-spoke aluminum rims. I learned this week that 3 of the 4 rims are bent, causing vehicle to vibrate. In addition, the clear coat began peeling off all the rims in 2000.car began vibrating and driving strangely february of 2005. I had the passenger lower control arm, passenger hub assembly and passenger driveshaft replaced. Car drives better now, but vibration continues.brought car to a wheel shop this week to repair a 5th bent rim i got for use as a full size spare. Wheel shop balanced the 4 wheels on the car and notified me that 3 of the 4 original wheels are "out of true" which is the reason for the vibration. They attribute this to extremely soft aluminum used in the rims' construction.upon checking onthe internet ifound this was a common problem for 17" wheels made by enkei? and found on the mitsubishi eclipse, dodge avenger and chrysler sebring between 1997 and 2001.some websites referring to this issue were:http://www.sshwlaw.com/press.php?cid=0172 and http://www.mitsubishisucks.com/cars/class/rims/eclipse/ .
Both front and rear right rims were bent under separate, unrelated and normal driving conditions.dealer would not repair because owner could not "prove" it was normal conditions.problem is widespread apparently with these rims.door assembly sealant for weather stripping began dripping over the summer after i purchased car.still drips.dealer stalled on repairs until i was out of my warranty and then refused to repair.
