My 1999 town and country air bag warning light came on, horn, and cruise control have stopped working. Dealer claims it's a defective clockspring assembly and they are being recalled in the 1996-98 year models, but not 1999. My cost - $180. I believe 1999 year models should be included as well. I see from your website that i am not the only person in the 1999 year category that has had this problem (or should i say the privilage of paying for it).
When drivingat any speed air bag warning light appeared on the dashboard. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, and mechanicdetermined that clockspringfailed.
Air bag light stays on for 5-6 months, later cruise control & horn in steering wheel quit working. Took vehicle to body shop and they said clock spring had failed and needed replaced.
Air bag light constantly on, no horn no cruise control no radio control. Went to dealer for recall on airbag steering wheel clock spring and was told i would have to pay for diagnostic and also pay for part " in case it was not covered. This is not how a safety recall should be performed to my understanding
Air bag light stays on, the cruise system and horn is not working.*al
Consumer states that the clock went out causing the air bag light to stay illuminated, horn to go out, and cruise control to not engage. Ts
The air bag light illuminated on the dash board.
When drivingat any speed air bag warning ligt appeared on the dashboard. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, an d mechanic was unable to duplicate the problem.
Air bag sensor light comes on and stays on.this can cause the air bag not to deploy in an accident or to deploy permaturely.the consumer states that if she adjusts the steering wheel it will go out.ford dealer suggests that it is a manufacturer defect.*scc
Recall 04v480000/air bag clock spring: since this recall repair was made the horn continuously goes off while driving.

1999 chrysler town & country experienced mechanical failure.***no answer required***. *mrthe spring which held the latch for the tilt steering in place failed.the consumer had to push the latch forward to engage it because the spring would not into engagement.the consumer believed the tilt wheel latch may have been damaged or not re-assembled correctly when he had the recall repair done regarding the clockspring .
The consumers vehicle experienced symptoms of recall 02-v-293-000 which is related to the clockspring assembly.the recall stated that the clockspring assembly may have been wound incorrectly during the vehicle assembly process. No correction done; dealer refused to repair recalled part. *nlm
The clock spring failed.
The clock spring mechanism in my 1999 chrysler t&c caused the airbag warning light to illuminate; other items in the steering wheel area do not work- 1) cruise control, 2) radio volume and station control, 3) horn
Submitting this complaint on behalf of my 80 yr. Old mother.1999 town & country purchased new sept. 1999 now 40000 miles.required repairs past 2 weeks.airbag and horn $250, speedometer $135, cracked exhaust manifold cost to be determined.airtconditioner $ to be determined est. To cost $1100.our phone call to chrysler customer service (800-426-6451) was a horrible experiece.
Check airbag light illumined when driving. Horn, cruise control and radio control on steering wheel do not work. Mechanic identified defective clock spring assy. Said it was a recall item. Dealer said recall only applied to 1996-1998 model years, not mine which was 1999. Same clock spring assy as recall.*nlm
Consumer received two recall letters from chrysler concerning the clock spring. When he tookvehicle to redlands auto center where the vehicle was purchased, they refused to servicevehicle. Recall repairs were not performed.
The airbag warning light comes on frequently, indicating the airbags are not working.dealer says the unit has a faulty clock spring.the clock spring was recalled for models up to 1998.there has been no recall for 1999 or later.i have a 1999.i believe the airbag's clock spring should be replaced by chrysler.
Horn does not blow unless hit very hard and in cold temps it will not blow at all.dt
The airbag light stays on and the horn doesn't work. I own a 1999 chrysler town and country lxi van.
The air bag light remained on and the cruise control, horn and steering wheel radio controls stopped working. I had to replace the clock-spring which was a recall item on earlier models. I think the 1999 models should be added to the recall list. Lmb.
My 1999 chrysler town and country's horn stopped working and the airbag light went on.my 3rd party mechanic said he has seen this happen numerous times.the van has 61000 miles.i took it to a chrysler dealer who said it was not covered under a recall.it cost me $250.they said it was the clock spring. Seems like a problem that stops the horn and the airbags from working would generate a recall.
While driving horn faildand the air bag warning light illuminated. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The dealership indicated tha teh clockspring was defective.a recall was issued by the manufacturer on 1996-1998 mobels, but not the 1999 model.the dealer replaced the clockspring but would not provide any financial assistance.
Horn, cruise control, steering wheel stereo controls & air bag not working. Possibly related to clockspring failure.*mr

When drivingat an undetermined speed air bag warning light appear on the dashboard.consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, and mechanicdeterminedthatclock spring failed.
I started hearing a clicking noise on turning steering wheel on the 1999 chrysler town & country. Dealer inspected it and stated that clockspringmalfunctioned and it neededto be replaced under lifetime warranty. On the day of scheduled repair stated that air bags malfunctioned, should start before they will replace clockspring. I am now intermittently hearing a chime sound on turning the wheel. I am worried about safety of vehicle and risk of injuries in view of potential airbag malfunction. I think that chrysler' s approach to this problem is putting mine and my family's life at risk.
When drivingat an undetermined speed air bag warning light appeared on the dashboard. Consumer informed the dealer about this issue, andmechanicdetermined that clock spring failed.
The air bag light illuminated, the horn would not sound and the cruise control would not operate due to a faulty air bag clock spring which was replaced.*scc
Air bag lamp lighted up in dashboard simultaneously losing horn and cruise control. Ar involved: chrysler town & country lxi, 1999.
Airbag light stays on or blinks intermittantly, horn doesn't work or only works somtimes cruise control doesn't worksometimes
The air bag warning light illuminated while driving.this was due to a failure in the clockspring. A recall was issued # 02v293000,however this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. Also the cruise control doesn't work, possibly due to the inoperative air bag.
No accident, crash, or injury.my air bag clock spring failed and my air bag warning light illuminated.i'm told by the dealer that my air bag will now not work (also my cruise control & steering wheel radio controls are not funtional).this is a serious safety issue & i am getting it repaired quickly at a cost of over $220.this should be paid for by daimler chrysler!.
The owner noticed the air bag warning light illuminated and the horn malfunctioned, the dealership replaced the clock spring, which was recalled, however the consumer's vehicle identification number did not apply. Recall #02v293000.the cruise control and the radio control were also affected by the clockspring, which was recalled on the 1996-98 town and country vehicle's.scc
Vehicle rear ended another vehicle at about 35mph and neither driver's or passenger's side airbag deployed. Chrysler is going to investigate.
A recall was issued on november 4, 2002 for chrysler town and country mini vans 1996-1998 model years. Situation: the clockspring on about 1,475,000 of the affected vehicles may lose the electrical connection to the steering wheel mounted electrical components. [nhtsa recall no. 02v293/daimlerchrysler recall no. B24]my 1999 town and country mini van has the same exact problem. This poses a serious problem for me and my family's safety. I don't understand why my van is not covered.it is only logical that other year vans even newer than the recall years be covered. Mine was built 6 months after recall end.considering the recall of over 1.5 million other units. It only makes sense that the 1999 model year was also put together wrong also. I have written to daimler chrysler but was turned down by: andrew millersenior staff representative daimlerchrysler customer assistance center he gave me the typle corporate reply in trying to get off the hook.is there anyting you can do?
Air bag indicator light is on constantly, horn doesn't work, stereo controls on steering wheel don't work, cruise control doesn't work. I'm afraid airbag won't deploy on accident and i can't honk my horn if immediate problem arises.
Consumer states that vehicle's airbag sensor light continues to stay on and horn dosen't work. Dealer notified. Please provide additionalinformation. Ts
Air bag sensor light stayed on.consumer was concerned that the air bag would not deploy upon impact. A recall was issued, however this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to vin. The clockspring assembly failed.the air bag warning light remained on, the horn would not operate, the cruise control and radio on the steering wheel did not work. *sc
Consumer hit another vehicle while driving between 25-30 mph, front crash at an angle. Airbagsdid not deploy, $ 4135.51 damage to vehicle.
Consumer's vehicle was going through a stop sign when all of a sudden another vehicle struck it from the front. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy.
The airbag light illuminated while driving.now the cruise control, radio, horn and the functions on the steering wheel are inoperative.the cause of this problem is unknown. *nlmthe mechanic stated that the clockspring was bad.the was a recall for the 1996-98 models.the consumer found that six other same make/models have experienced the same problem with the 99 model and felt that this model should be included in the recall.recall#02v293000scc
No crash involved...noticed after a rainstorm here on the coast, that there was the sound of water rolling back and forth in the dash area when i was driving..not only that, but there was a significant(huge flood) of water coming into the passenger compartment from the dash area immediately in front of the passenger seat...enough water that my carpeting was completely soaked, and ruined.after this happened many times..i finally figured out what it was..there is some sort of drain hose to a water collection reservoir under the windshield...which can be disconnected to drain, but in the event of debris washing into it...would clog up and overflow..resulting in the described condition..this is very poor design in my opinion..some of folks i have had this to..did not have a clue what was going on...i have not said anything to chrysler about this...but think it is not just me who has the issue..and it also could be a contributor to some of the other issues i have read about..particularly the condensation issue and the airbag issue..i am concerned that the electronics will fail...please advise...i am picking a random date when it first happened...also..has occurred many times since unless i clean the drain hoses...never had this happen on any other vehicle...?
Horn stopped, but air bag light was on. Manufacturer stated that the vehiclewas under investigation.
Horn has stopped working, check engine light stays lit, airbag light keeps coming on at least once a week and chimes.dealership believes from the description that it may be the clockspring except that my cruise control still works.vehicle from 1996-1998 has been recalled for the clockspring. Please be advised that the same problems that caused that recall are showing up on 1999 models.
Clock spring in steering column is defective.air bag light is lit and the horn, cruise control and radio controls do not work.
The airbag light keeps coming on and the steering wheel controls do not work. I took it to the dealer and was told that the clockspring was defective. They want to charge me $270.00 to fix it. I was charged $70.00 for the diagnosis. This, in my opinion, should be a recall issue and should be fixed for free.
Consumer states that her vehicle is experiencing the same defectwith the air bag clockspring as in recall number 02 v 293 000, but vehicle is not included cause the recall is not on this yearvehcile.ts
Air bag light on dash board has been on for a week.ccording to the dealer the "clock spring" is defective and needs to be replaced.currently, i have no air bag, horn, or cruise control. Where is a recall up to year 1998 but not 1999.my van was bulit in 1998 why is it not included in the recall? maybe the recall should be expanded to include more years.
Air bag light came on and horn would not work.told by the dealership it was a clockspring failure. Saw an odi resume online concerning this.
Nhtsa recall 04v480000. Daimler chrysler issued an air bag clock spring recall. This vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin although itexperiencedsimilar air bag check light problem.
Airbag light on.horn and cruise control inoperative.the clockspring assembly that connects the steering wheel mounted electrical components to the electrical system seems to have lost the electrical connection to those components.there is a recall for this problem for chrysler minivans from 1996-1998.we have a 1999 town-and-country and it also has the same problem.i would like to ask you to include 1999 models in this recall.
Intermittently while driving air bag light came on. Vehicle was taken to the dealership.however, dealer was unable to resolve the problem.
The contact owns a 2009 chrysler town and country. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v373000 (air bags, electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The vin was unknown. The contact had not experienced a failure.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the cluster circuit board on the instrument panel failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated there was an open circuit board that caused the vehicle to not start, which needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 129,000.
I have a 1999 chrysler town and country van and tnbis is the second time within the last 20 months the instrument cluster circuit board, part number 4874440, has failed.this circuit board, behind the instrument panel, controls most of the electrical circuits in the car.when it fails the gauges don't work, the warning lights don't work, the door locks fail, it affects the radio, and sometimes the car won't start.the problem is you never know when it will fail.this is the second circuit board we have had replaced.the two safety issues are the fact that the car may not start.the syptoms are very sporadic.sometimes only the gauges are affected.other times it won't start but may start the next day or next week.i was told this also affects the proper functioning of the driver and passenger air bags. When the gauges go out and the passive restraint system and air bag light goes on the chances are they would not function properly in an accident.chrysler either engineered this circuit board poorly, causing the high failure rate, or their supplier is shipping defective parts.this should be a fleet-wide recall.i called chrysler support and they said they would report the problem.the chrysler file no. Is 16463834.
Our vehicle has failed to start on 3 occasions.the first time we had it towed to the chrysler dealership.it started right up for them and they could find anything wrong.if you google 1999 chrysler town & country you will find many complaints and few solutions.one party has spent over $3000 at the dealership and still has the problem.i am not a mechanic but my guess would be there is a loose soldering joint on one of the boards.it has to do with the alarm.the car thinks its being stolen so it cuts the engine off.what has worked for us (believe it or not) is a good hard bang on the top of the dash.i am fearful of driving.i don't want to get stranded.this should definitely be a recall and chrysler needs to address this issue.the alarm set light comes on each time, sometimes even while driving!we shouldn't have to cross our fingers every time we get in the van!can you tell us how to disconnect the alarm system?i think that would be a band-aide fix to the problem but we have not been able to find any instructions.the problem first started with the horn blowing for the alarm sporadically and for no reason.we took out the horn fuse to prevent further instances which poses a safety hazard.its old but low miles and should not have these issues.
Consumer states that the transaxle input speed sensor was replaced.while driving, the vehicle stalled, dealer informed consumer that the computer would have to be replaced.
I have chrysler town & country and both of driver side and passenger side windows stop operating. I had similar problems with the rear passenger side window last year.
1999 chrysler town and countrythe dash lose function, driving without speed and the rest of the function.
1999 chrysler town & country limited: problem(s) worsening - becoming more frequent over last 3 yrs: start van, runs 5-10 secs, then shuts off, disconnect battery-wait 3 mins, cranked in beginning, now only 50/50: security system activates and shut system down 24 hrs, disconnect battery but no startl 24 hours, had new key made at dealership use vin, problems persists: rear vent windows stopped working, changed motors and switches, problem continues: heater in seats recalled, dealer replaced; heaters on recall but would not replace bottom cover(leather)has hole from where heater burning through, now heaters come on/off at will: gauges go off with engine running, back on when they get ready: radio and power windows intermittent: transmission will not shift from first when exiting interstate after traveling in od for 100 miles, happened 3-4 times, not continuous: alarm sounds in middle of night and whenstanding in street 25ft+ behind the van; manufactured on 4/17/98 so 1999 has mostly 1998 parts, real problematic when purchasing parts: note: have two 1999 t&c limiteds, one having these problems the other (red) only paint clear coat peeling; had to tow van several times. Now having the instrument cluster and lock switch in driver's door replace. Next step change bcm: i am throwing $1s at van, dealerships (more than one) say no idea causation. Dealer has replaced battery, cables, belt, maintenance on transmission +). Your url from chat rooms and forums. Many others having same or similar problems. No luck with their local dealerships either. Have owned many chrysler and dodge products, these may be last! thank you. Pastor steve randall
Instrument cluster and spedometer have failed.while driving my entire dash would turn off.no spedometer, no tachometer, no fuel, nothing.after a month or two of this happening on and off, my spedometer started getting inaccurate.it's now at about 37mph off.when i turn my car off, the spedometer goes to 0 (or below 0).when i turn my key to the right, it goes to 37mph.while i'm driving 20, it shows 57mph.if i'm driving 60mph, it shows 97mph. After performing a google search and reading through some tech blogs, we've found this is a very common problem with the instrument cluster and a broken circuit that needs to be soldered.we did that and have not had the problem with my dash instruments turning off since then, but the spedometer is still not accurate.we tried doing a spedometer reset which did not resolve the issue.i feel like there are so many people that have reported this problem, and it is unsafe for your instrument cluster to not be fully functional - that this should be a recall.i know people with jeeps and dodge vehicles that have the same problem.i am shocked that this is not a recalled issue and can't wait to sell this.i definitely won't make the mistake of purchasing jeep/dodge/crysler again if you're unwilling to repair this defect for your customers at no cost.after a brief search, i see nhtsa id numbers:10253857, 10469302, 10192636, 10093722, 10195148, 10203097, 10093722, 10137954, and 10062117 filed with same or similar problems as well as all the info i've found online.
My vehicle has been going haywire.sometimes the locks goes up and down by itself and you can hear something sort of like a tazer.the odometer blinks while all of this is going on.also, i took my van to the shop at sears because when i turn the switch for air, it only works on high and not all the time.they told me that seems to be the case with many of the town and country vans that come in there.also the pipe that runs coolant to the back vents rusted out.again, after researching with many shops, was told that it appears the same issues are taking place with this model van.also there is a lot of rust underneath.not sure as to how it is happening.i have had to replace my radiator twice with the last 6 years as if something is rusting parts underneath. I will be visiting many shops and having the owners sign a petition as to what are the ongoing issues with these vehicles.i have started a blog and i am not the only person with issues with this vehicle.
This is the 2nd incident for the same problem.first complaint #10468365.i was stopped at an intersection.i crossed the street and my tires splashed water that was running down the street gutter.the water was 2-4" deep.i once again immediately lost steering and the engine began to overheat.i was able to muscle the steering wheel enough to pull it off to the side of the road. I looked under the hood and found the belt had slipped off again.i had to have it towed to the garage. The mechanic checked out the belt and the tensioner and said they were ok, and they reinstalled the belt. The first time this happened i was turning a corner, and the van went into the opposite lane. I guess i can be thankful for the draught these past few months.this is a serious problem.it makes me afraid of driving when it is raining or with any water on the road.i can't imagine what would happen on the interstate at 70mph, passing someone, or taking a curve in the road.i contacted the chrysler dealership.a bulletin #07-0299 was issued in 7.14.99.the dealership said i would have to purchase any fixesas it wasn't a recalled problem.the dealership told my mechanic they offered a $400 kit to fix the problem, or i could purchase a "snow" shield and have it installed. Why would i need a "snow" shield in louisiana?
Air bag warning light on, then cruise control and radio controls in steering wheel failed, then horn failure.
Multiple eletrical failures in convenience items through-out car & now loosing engine power while driving. Vehicle currently at chyrsler service, but recalled part that was possibly installed incorrectly on 1996 to 98 models has had failure on 99 model, but no recall. Dealership not addressing safety issue of vehicle dying while auto engaged, more interested in replacing all convenience items. There has been no auto failure at highway speeds yet
My 1999 town and country imtermittenly will not start.we've taken it to the shop several times and they can find nothing wrong.the speedometer, tachometer, etc. Also has shut off by itshelf while driving.
I purchased this vehicle in august of 2013 and have been having ongoing problems with the alarm system.it shuts the vehicle down and won't let it start again for anywhere from days to weeks later.i have had a new computer put in and flashed by the chrysler garage but nothing and noone seems to be able to fix this problem.it makes the vehicle totally unreliable and a safety hazard to get stranded anytime.i have been dumping money into the vehicle for over a year trying to get it fixed with no luck.this should be a recall item that is addressed at the expense of the company.they know this problem exists.
The engine will not start, it is an intermittent problem, i think it is an electrical issue.i have taken it to a garage and noone can seem to find the problem.
It had been raining but had stopped.i was making a right hand turn when my right tire went through approximately 2-4" of water in the gutter.i immediately lost control of the steering and veered into the opposite lane.fortunately there were no cars in that lane.i had difficulty steeringand the engine began to overheat. I was fortunate the garage was around the corner.the belt had slipped off the pulleys.the belt had not broken, only slipped off. They said i was the 3rd town and country that day that had to have the belt put back on due to the wet weather, and that it was a problem with model for many years.this is the 3rd time to send this report.when i hit "verify" everything goes blank.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country. On occasion, the vehicle would not start. Also, while driving, the headlights would suddenly shut off. For each failure, the contact indicated that banging on the dashboard would resolve the issues. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on multiple occasions and the battery, starter, and computer were replaced; however, the failures continued. The manufacturer was notified. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 65,000.
My problem is in the ignition switch, which is affecting the air conditioner and blinkers , at the same time , i tested the van while itwas running i moved theignition key and the air conditioning and blinkers would work.started well van was stationary in my driveway 10/1/2016.
Dt: consumer received a recall on seats to have them redone. There was a problem about the heated seats getting hot.they had the seats redone. When they drove the car a substantial amount of miles the back of the van/the taillight, and back bumper caught on fire. The car was sitting still when the fire occurred.

Greenbrier chryslerservice managers favorite line is me patient. Please help me with this situation.( dot number:)
Van would not start.battery appeared weak.had vehicle towed to dealer.service department stated that the positive battery cable had corroded through, about 6 inches down from terminal clamp.no outside indication of serious cable corrosion.concern is that the van gave no indication of a problem up until the time it would not start.if the cable had failed while driving we could of experienced loss of electrical power, and loss of engine power, leading to loss of control of vehicle.service repair department stated that they are repairing several of these cable per year, at least on the 1999 model vans.service departement also stated that the wiring design had been changed due to the high cost to replace positive battery cable (quoted as being $720) as it is part of the main wiring harness as well as starting system.i believe this is a potential defect that should be repaired by chrysler.in over 40 years of motor vehicle associated activities i have never heard or seen a battery cable itself that has corroded.i have seen corrosion on a cable next to the old style terminal clamps (e.g., made out of lead) but not to the cable itself.it appears to be some kind of galvanic corrosion as it is only the positive battery terminal that exhibits corrosion.the positive battery cable terminal clamp is made out of a different metal than the negative battery cable terminal clamp.
1999 chrysler t&c with 80,000 miles. Tie rod loose $200, alternator tension rusted $200, strut covers rusting $900.these and the general poor quality rating of this vehicle has cost me thousands in trade-in value and placed my family in jeopardy.
Car still will not start after several replacements of batteries. Then starter and alternator. Spoke to mr. Owens of greenbrier about a extend warranty on my van respond i'll have to get back to you.by the way your van is ready for pick up.i left several voice messenger in response to my warranty that me and mr. Air bag light stays on, the cruise system and horn is not working.*al
Air bag indicator light is on constantly, horn doesn't work, stereo controls on steering wheel don't work, cruise control doesn't work. I'm afraid airbag won't deploy on accident and i can't honk my horn if immediate problem arises.
Horn, cruise control, steering wheel stereo controls & air bag not working. Possibly related to clockspring failure.*mr
Air bag light stays on for 5-6 months, later cruise control & horn in steering wheel quit working. Took vehicle to body shop and they said clock spring had failed and needed replaced.
Recall 04v480000/air bag clock spring: since this recall repair was made the horn continuously goes off while driving.
Consumer states that while driving and no warning the horn will operate intermittently. Dealer notified ts
Air bag lamp lighted up in dashboard simultaneously losing horn and cruise control. Ar involved: chrysler town & country lxi, 1999.
Horn does not blow unless hit very hard and in cold temps it will not blow at all.dt
Horn stopped, but air bag light was on. Manufacturer stated that the vehiclewas under investigation.
The horn failed to work.
The clock spring mechanism in my 1999 chrysler t&c caused the airbag warning light to illuminate; other items in the steering wheel area do not work- 1) cruise control, 2) radio volume and station control, 3) horn

Consumer states that the transaxle input speed sensor was replaced.while driving, the vehicle stalled, dealer informed consumer that the computer would have to be replaced.
When consumer started their vehicle it wouldn't start, then smoke started coming fromunder thehood. The dealership indicated that the problem was caused by the starter motor. Please provide more details.
Parts ininside of the vehicle got hot to the point where they have burned the consumer. Consumer has second degree burns onleft hand, and third degree burns on right hand. Contacted dealer, and dealer was going to take a look at the vehicle.
Over the last 6mos the seat heater on our tc mini van has continually overheated.burns legs.dealership said our fault and nothing they can do.our expense.one of the reasons we bought this van was because of the seat heaters.have bad back and heat helps.very disappointed with quality of product for the price paid.have stopped using seat htr.and will not buy another chrysler.van has been in shop for many other problems, speedometer, starter, tires leaking due to rims, egr valve, leaky boot, struts, etc... More items replaced than i expected.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.on may 4, 2007, the vehicle's control panel failed followed by the electrical system while driving.the contact restarted the vehicle and it ran for a few seconds, only to fail again.this continued until the vehicle failed completely.the purchase date and engine size were unknown.the current mileage is 102,000 and failure mileage was 95,000.
The large (1.5in.) bundle of wires that goes from the battery/fuse box to the starter/other places...goes through a cutout in the bottom/front of the vehicle this bundle rubs with vibration untill the insulation is gone.short causes the fire.my brother's van is built the same way.
Light on intstrument panel does not illuminate bright enough, and is inadequate for night driving.

Tachometer, speedometer and controls on the steering wheel have ceased working, and i was told that the clockspring needs to be replaced.1996-1998 chrysler town & country minivans were recalled for this problem in a similar mileage range, and i see numerous complaints on this website for the same problem with 1999 models.because it is real safety issue that hasn't been corrected after the recall period, the 1999 models should also be included in the recall.

Minivan had a electrical fire under the dash.
We have a 1999 chrysler town and country van and we have experienced electrical problems beginning at about 60,000 miles.it started with the dash lights and gauges intermittently going off, then back on.it also affected power to the radio and the power windows.i had the car in during the warranty period several times but the service technician could not reproduce the defect.finally at 108,000 the car failed to start and had to be towed to a dealership.the problem was diagnosed as a faulty circuit board for the instrument panel cluster behind the dashboard, part number 4874440. This is a safety issue because gauges may not work when a mechanical malfunction occurs, such as a water pump, alternator or battery failure.additionally, the car may not start when the weather conditions are severe, placing the occupants in danger.i checked with three chrysler dealerships in the local area and their parts departments all told me that 396 of this $370.00 part are on "national back order."only 240 of the 396 are going to be filled based on production shortages.if the original manufactured parts are faulty then chrysler needs to have a recall and replace the defective part.the demand for this part indicates there is a problem.a post mortem on defective parts may be necessary to determine why they went bad.
This van is very unsafe i need help
Driving van in the rain, noticed the steering became extremely difficult.i also noticed that the lights ad power started to dim.in that case, i pulled over to see what the issue was.i noticed that the serpentine belt had come off the pulleys.i have had other mini-vans especially dodges and have noticed they all seem to do the same thing when it comes to rain, snow, ice.you would think they would resolve this issue as it is a safety issue.i've learned from my previous dodge caravans how to put the serpentine belt back on, but it really is a safety issue as this could leave you stranded and very costly (money and time wise) if you don't know how to put it back on.as a consumer, i will not be purchasing another dodge or chrysler minivan again due to this issue!
While driving vehicle to an appt my daughter started complaining of her feet becoming very hot.she was sitting in the passenger front seat, there was a burning odor.i pulled over and looked underneath the vehicle, the exhaust was cherry red and there were flames near catalytic converter area.i had to have the van towed home.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country. When the contact attempted to start the vehicle, the engine stalled. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 1999 town and country. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle belt became detached from the pulley system, causing the power steering and brakes to fail. The contact stated he would have to reconnect the belt whenever it became detached. The failure was recurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the tension pulley system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would stall without warning. The contact mentioned that the vehicle would immediately restart after the failure but all the gauges on the instrument panel would remain off. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 119,000 and the current mileage was 178,000.
The contact owned a 1999 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that smoke emitted under the hood. Within minutes, the hood caught fire. The fire department was notified. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.
I was driving on street and brakes went out. Did not hit anyone but had to drive to shop do to no brakes very slow. Brakes line rusted out and had to replace brake lines used emergency brake to stop and go. All parts of van is rusting frame that holds motor in rusted and can not trade in do to dealer said it is a safety factor and it can not be repaired do to rust.
On this day i was siting in my van with the ignition in the on position resetting my clocks in the vehicle i rested my hand on the shifter when it released from park into reverse gear without the engine running there are no brakes because of power braking you cant stop on a dime so i quickly engaged the parking brake to stop the vehicle from rollingdown my drive. I immediately contacted chrysler who claims they are not responsible for this issue since they did not install this saftey feature on any chrysler town and country van to date also i have an issue with when it rains the serpentine belt falls off the pulleys if water splashes up onto the belt itself causing loss of brakes and steering due to this defect chrysler is aware of this issue but again refuses to recall the vehicles for a safer fix something needs to be done beofe they kill someone.
I was driving down the road down the road on 11/16/14 and the serpentine belt cam off going down the road and the head lights went dim and the engine was going to over heat and the steering wheel was very hard to turn so i had to pull over and put the belt back on andevery time i go down the road and the serpentine belt gets wet it come off and i have to fix it every time i hit a little water puddleit come off and i put all new parts and i looked online to see if any one had the same problem like i have and i seen more then 9,000 complaints and im tired of the problem it came off 10 times this year and the dealer said that is missed align even the mechanics said it is a common problem. So if any one can do some thing about it please do some thing before some one gets very bad hurt.
I bought my town and country used about a year ago. I have not had any significant problems until around three months ago when the serpentine belt started coming off. It has come off approximately 9 times in the last three months and only in wet weather while driving through small puddles in the road. I thought the tensioner was bad and changed it, but the next day the belt came off in the rain. I called the service department and asked the service tech why the belt kept coming off and he asked me if it was raining at the time. Imagine that! they know it is a problem but will not recall the vehicle for a fix. I will never buy another chrysler product again. Again like almost all the other complaints, loss of power steering, engine cooling, alternator etc. Lucky for me i am mechanical otherwise it would have cost me a ton of money on towing charges.
Dt: about 2 years ago the consumer noticed while driving, the power steering went out. The oil light came on at the time.the consumer drove to a garage.the mechanic replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner. Everything worked for about 2 months and then it had to be replaced again. Then today while driving the consumer lost steering again, due to the failure of the serpentine belt and tensioner.
Serpentine belt falls off in heavy rainfall.
I own a 1999 chrysler town & country van.major problem is serpentine belt coming off and causing a loss of steering. Every time it rains my serpentine belt comes off which causes extremely hard steering. I have replaced tensioners twice in the and belt 4 times.thank god i was not on the free way or a street with alot of traffic or this could kill me or an other person. I have looked on the internet and this has happened to 100s of people.on the internet it state that thefactory recommended repair( the replacement of the idler pulleyand the pulleys retaining bracket.) in the tsb i read, chrysler's engineers have decided that on some models theidler pulley is misaligned by .08 inches.chrysler should recall this and fix there problem before someone gets killed.get involved and make chrysler fix this problem.
Serpentine belt jumps off when car is driven in rainy conditions, leaving driver and family stranded anywhere! serpentine belt controls all sorts of functions in car including the ability to steer the car!
The serpentine belt falls off in wet weather on my 1999 chrysler town & country minivan. This has happened 4 times this past year alone and has cost me in terms of towing and service. This can also be a very dangerous situation depending on when and where the belt falls off. When the belt comes off, there is no power steering, the radiator overheats, and the alternator isn't charging. This can ruin the engine.after searching the web, i found that this is a very common experience for both dodge caravan and chrysler town and country vans. There should be a recall to fix the problem.
I own a 1999 chrysler town and country minivan. While driving in the rain with 3 passengers ( 1 youth, 1 toddler in car seat and 1 elderly person) i noticed the steering became very hard to control, immediately after i looked at my indicators and noticed the temperature was on the max hot setting. I was able to pull over and ark it and upon having it towed i noticed a belt hanging from under the vehicle. After asking around and doing research i found it was the serpentine belt, which i cannot afford to fix at this time and i also found out it was a common problem with this particular vehicle. Wont chrysler do anything to fix this most dangerous defect??!!
Serpentine belt slipped off tensioner pulley after driving through puddle on highway making all power accessories inoperable including power steering. This is the second time in 3 weeks that this has happened and upon further research online this is a well known problem on chrysler/dodge minivans built between 1996-2000.
The serpentine belt fell off last night and due to the loss of steering assist i ended up in an accident.luckily no one was hurt.it has been an on-going problem with the serpentine belt falling off.i replaced all the parts associated with the belt and it still happened.it is dangerous and why does chrysler not have a recall on this?
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.while driving 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 95 mph.the contact was able to pull over and stop the vehicle.the vehicle had to be towed.she found that there was a plastic sleeve that failed inside the air filter housing hose.a piece of the plastic went into the accelerator and held it open, making it impossible to decelerate.the plastic piece that went inside the accelerator was 4 inches long, and another piece of plastic went inside the housing.the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence.the piece was removed from the accelerator and the vehicle is currently working fine.the manufacturer wants the contact to buy a new resonator air cleaner.the part numbers are available.the contact filed complaint number 17422816 with daimler chrysler.the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was 153,873 and failure mileage was 153,823.

The engine has had a horrible loud squeaking sound when the air conditioning is on. Almost every belt and the tensioner has been replaced more than once. The service center at center chrysler in van nuys california repeatedly has told me this is normal. I have never heard another car ever which sounds so bad. I am afraid that something in the engine will snap or break while i am driving with my small children. I am getting no adequate response from chrysler. Everytime i call i am told there is no problem but the mechanic has now told me that he thinks it may be the water pump belt. Why is chrysler not dealing with a defective car?
Vehicle caught on fire, claim # 42-1356-292.nlm
The pulleys that hold the belt are misaligned which shreds the belts in the motor.this occured while drivng down the exspressway @ 70 mph. The car loses power steering and power. This happens as we researched more often then not. You would have to replace the tentioner assembly in order to correct this defect. I have not heard of a recall for this defect.
Tensioning device that holdsserpentine belt is defective, it does not holdbelt in place, and the belt comes loose. When belt comes loose, vehicle will loose power steering and abs. Contacted dealer, and this was the fourth timeconsumer has takenvehiclein.
I just filed a complaint here regarding serpentine belt coming off when driving through a puddle of water.mechanics and chrysler service mechanics are well aware of this problem and you have sufficient number of complaints showing this same problem with other owners of vans.this is not a wear and tear situation.it is a defect in the company design of these pulleys and belts.why isn't there a recall yet??
Sudden failure of engine serpentine belt tensioner. Soon after starting vehicle, and while backing out of garage there was a loud bang under the hood. Instantly power steering was lost along with engine cooling and alternator output. Tensioner assembly mounting bolt had sheared off from apparent metal fatique, throwing off the serpentine belt. The resultant violent departure of the tensioner assembly also shattered the power steering pump pulley. This could have been catastrophic on the highway.
Multiple times the belt has slipped off... Luckily, both during low speed maneuvers.this happens every time the car gets wet underneath and this time i was going through a car wash.i almost ran into the side of the wash when i was pulling in due to the lack of power steering.i have replaced/put the belt back on at least 5 other times.this is crazy that it keeps happening, and you can tell the design is just plain flawed.
Consumer's wife was drivingwhen she rode through a puddle of water, andserpentinebelt came off, causing her to lose power steering, etc.the consumer learnt from the dealership that thesserpentine belt failure was a common problem.
While driving a 1999 town and country chrysler van the pulley for the water pump separated from the water pump. This caused the drive belt for all engine accessories tocome loose. The lack of the belt caused the loss of all power assist, i.e., brakes, steering elect. Etc. A subsequent review of the water pump pulley showed that it was bolted to a three bolt hub. The hub was a pressed fit on the water pump shaft.the hub appeared to bedesigned to be permanently attached to the water pump shaft.there was no obvious damage to the water pump shaft nor to the hub bearing that would indicate that an induce torque caused the separation of the hub and the water pump shaft. The vehicle only has 42,000 miles on it. It appears that this premature failure iseither a poor design or a manufacturing defect. Ineither case the failure at highway speed would induce a high risk accident. The loss of steering power assist alone would make the driver feel that the steering had locked up.when i discussed this failure with the chrysler customer service that stated that they had no record of this type of failure.when i discussed the failure with the local repair garage ( pep boys ) they recalled several pulley failures on chrysler/dodge vehicles.the question is do we have a potential safety problem with the water pump shaft and the hub connection that can fail with any prior warning.i have the water pump and the hub.
Serpentine belt derails when driven in rain. This is a huge safety issue because the power steering goes out. Replace belts and tensioner pulley, still happens. Lots of posts on the web from people having the same issue even after having the tsb for the idler pulley done. It's amazing that no one has been seriously hurt by this defect.
The serpentine belt has fallen off the car 3 different times.the first time it broke, i was out of town.the other 2 times it fell off in town.all 3 times i had just driven through an unavoidable deep puddle during a heavy thunderstrom.the car immediately loast power steering and the engine overheated.i had to quickly pull off the road.luckily i was on neighborhood streets each time, but just as easily could have been on the highway - which could have been deadly.also, each time i had a car full of children and twice it was at night.after the third time (and third tow/repair), the repair shop found the service bulletin from chrysler.the van had a bracket already in place, but it replaced again anyway.i think this problem is very dangerous and should be a recall, not service bulletin.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.while driving 35 mph through a puddle of water, the power steering failed.the contact pulled off the road.the vehicle was towed to the repair shop and it was discovered that the serpentine belt was loose.the belt was replaced; however, the failure continued only in wet conditions.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 120,000 and current mileage was 150,000.
Serpentine belt repeatedly slips off when driving in wet weather.
Acute failure of engine belt tensioner resulted in immediate loss of power accessories, including steering and brakes.engine coolant circulation lost as well as the serpentine belt had derailed.it was not possible to reinstall the belt as the tensioner was frozen in place.
The timing belt was replaced.
The serpentine belt sheared off while driving, causingvehicleto stall.consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had it towed to the dealer for inspection.mechanic determined that the pulley belt and a shield neededto be replaced.
On several occasions my 1999 town and country has had belt and pulley problems where while riding in busy traffic rainy days, the belt will slip completely of the pulley its attached to,causing my vehicle to completely lose all power steering abilities right in the middle of the heavy traffic, prior to the belt coming off the vehicles makes this loud chirping noise for several days prior to the belt coming off.i have had so many incidents with this same problem, but cannot afford to purchase a new vehicle as this one is still nice and paid off. Every mechanic i've used is telling me that this is a know factory issue because of the number of vehicles they've seen with the same problems. And have suggested that i change my vehicle for something with less aging problems. This is such a problem. We cannot travel in this vehicle when it rains as we know the belt or pulley will definitely leave us walking again. If water puddles are in the street it is suggested that the vehicle not be driven through them in order to keep the belt attached and not lose power steering that will for sure cause a major accident on busy streets. Is there anything my family and i can do to avoid being killed by this problem? or is there something that can be done mechanically to fix this problem? we still favor the town & country but not in favor of the known mechanical problem with the belt and pully situations.
The incident is the failure of the retaining bolt on the accessory driver's belt tensioner pulley assembly. The bolt failed by shearing off at the engine block. In failure, all accessories driven by the drive belt cease to operate, including the alternator, water ump and power steering pump. When the power steering pump stops, the driver is left in the hazardous situation of not being able to handle the vehicle. If the vehicle engine is left running, it will soon overheat because the water pump is no longer running. Additionally, on failure, the tensioner pulley assembly falls down into the engine compartment where it can damage other components. In our case, it broke the power steering pump pulley.the failure was corrected by drilling out the broken bolt from the engine block, replacing the tensioner assembly, and removing thepower steering pump to replace the power steering pump pulley. The old part is available.
Everytime the van is driven through a small puddle or heavy rain, serpentine belt comes off.it does not break.it slides off the pulley.as a result, power steering is lost immediately and water temperature rapidly rises.extremely dangerous in heavy traffic where there is not a place to pull over quickly.
Within a few months of buying this vehicle brand new a loud noise developed while steering at low speeds that was later ascribed to a loose belt. A few months later, while spouse was driving at approx 45-50 mph, the speedometer went dead and the transmission got stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. The vehicle slowed down and would not go much faster than about 35 mph. This was latter determined to be due to some faulty sensor. Just a few months after that, with the vehicle barely 2 years old, the battery went dead for no apparent reason. New battery was needed. Now i have this humming noise in the rear brakes with barely31k miles on the vehicle. What's next? this thing (so-called vehicle) has already cost us much lost time (taking it to the dealer) and the associated money in lost wages!

All four rims rusted out.all four ramps and tires collapsed.the brakes could not be fixed because the van runs so hot.
The a/c unit should have lasted longer than it did.am now repairing a second time.non warranty.no help from the dealer or manufacturer..

The left headlight lens has grown dull (the same thing happened to my 1996 dodge minivan) and therefore doesn't work as well as it should. They know there is a problem as they offered to shine it up for 50.00.
The plastic lens cover failed on the driver 'sside and passenger side headlights.this caused poor visibility for the driver. Consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the headlight assemblies needed to be replaced. Consumer paidfor parts and labor.
The headlight lens of the chrysler town & country van becomes clouded after about two years. This reduces the amount of light that is cast on to the roadway at night and greatly reducing the driver's ability to see the road ahead. This is an extremely dangerous condition and can only be remedied by replacement of headlight assembly unit. At a cost of $400+.
Driver's side headlightsproduced moisture inside the lens. As a result, headlights dimmed and impaired thedriver's vision at night. *tc
The plastic headlight lenses are foggy, causing the headlights to look dim.thisresults in poor visibilityat night.the consumer requested that chrysler replace the headlights. *sc
Consumer called complaining about having problems with the head light bulbs on the passenger side. Dealer was contacted and have stated that there is no recalls and that there is nothing they can do. Ts
-the contact stated that the headlight lens started to fog up after 8 months of driving his 1999 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that this limited his visilbilty while drivining at night.
While traveling noticed gas smell inside of vehicle. Dealer has been notified, can't find cause.please provide further information.
The dealership failed to install the seal on the fuel rail but indicated they did. The fuel injection fuel rail leaked fuel all over the engine.the vehicle was taken to another dealership who indicated that seal hadn't been installed and installed it.
Consumer contacteddealer regarding defects in vehicle. However, consumer was told by the dealership that vehicle was not included in recall o0 v 268 000. However, consumer was in fact included in recall. Please provide any further information.
Consumer received recall letter 99v268000 for seal on fuel rail. Consumer contacted dealer ,and they stated that parts were not available. Consumerwas concerned because a fire could start.please provide any further information.
Plastic gas tank developed a hole in it which allowed fuel to pour out of the vehicle while being driven. Dealer has to replace the fuel tank.
Concerned about potential of fire previous law suit settled in regards to voyager and town and country fuel tank erupted from road debris contacted dealerno response.
Plastic gas tank developed a hole and began leaking. I have noticed that there are other reports of this same issue -- could it be a design flaw?
Fuel gauge sending unit failed causing engine to stop even though gas was in the tank.mjs
Fuel tank was leaking due to malfunction offuel sending unit. Dealer contacted.
Fuel injector rail failure. Would like to know if there was a recall on this and if the repair is covered under a recall. Gas is leaking from the fuel injector rail, and van was chugging. Thank you in advance.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
When i went to visit my wife at the nursing home where she is, after i got in my van to go home i only made it a couple miles the gauges went goofy then the motor quit, i had no clue a relative owns a wrecker service so he came and towed me home. The next day i tried to start it but no luck, when i first got the van it did something just like this so i figured it could be the brain so i got one and put it in, nothing so while turning the engine over i didn't hear the fuel pump so i bought a replacement. After going through all of that it still would turn but not start a mechanic came out to look at it and see if he could figure out why it didn't start after looking at it he said that it was probably the fuel shut off relay, that's where it is,i need to find where the cutoff relay is located so i can reset it.
Leaking fuel from fuel rail in front of manifold. There is a valid recall, yet chrysler would not cover towing vehicle even though there is a dangerous situation with fuel leaking onto the engine. I very much believe that chrysler should cover towing.
When i started the car the engine was cold from sitting in the driveway all night.i smelled gasoline. I opened the hood to find gasoline shooting out of the fuel hose right where it fits into the pressed crimped metal connection. It was spraying gasoline all over the engine. I turned of the engine before it became hot. If this leak had occurred while driving, the motor would have been hot, and caught fire. The garage replaced the plenum gasket set, fuel injection, o ring, and the fuel rail. Note:the recall #rq00008 dc minivan fuel injector rail leak was done.

1999 chrysler town and country limited mini-van.outside door handles on both the right and left sliding doors have deteriorated and have fallen off of the vehicle.dealer tried to replace under warranty but was refused by daimler-chrysler stating that the handles were not part of the latch assembly.the doors are now unable to be open from the outside, making, in my opinion. The vehicle very unsafe.the cost of replacing both handles with labor is approximately $500.00.
Chrysler town and country 1999 3.8 l(1) events leading up to the failure: rain(2) failure and its consequences:dash lights flickering, windshield wipers stop and start, power locks unlock at highway speed.(3) what was done to correct the failure: called dealership & set up appointment.

My 1999 chrysler town and country limited mini van driver seat caught fire when the seat warmer was on.the seat got very hot about 1 minute before and then smoke came up in front of me while i was driving and i looked down and saw flames.i put it out and turned off the seat.we purchased the vehicle in 2001.at the time of the purchase, the driver's seat warmer was not working and as part of our sale the dealership replaced the entire seat with a brand new one to correct the problem.also, at the time of incident my passenger sliding door will not open from the inside.so, had the fire spread my passengers in the back would not have been able to open the door from the inside of the car.someone would have had to let them out from the outside of the car.we have had the locks replaced in the past 2 years due to the car locking itself and locks not working from both outside and inside.

There are complaints all over the country about chrysler transmissions. Its a down right shame to have to put a new transmission in a car with this low of miles.
I have a 1999 chrysler town and country limited edition, it started having transmission problems, i got that replaced, the lights that turn on the wipers andair keep blinking and will not turn off, the vans' panel lights won't cut on and the van won't start. When it does start, it cuts off after about 3 seconds. After it does that, it won't start again for 24 hours. Sometimes i unlock the doors and the locks relock themselves before i can open the door. The alarm cuts itself on and sometimes locks me out the car to where i can't put the key in the door. When i am able to cut the alarm off and try to start it, it will start for 3 seconds then cut off constantly until it doesn't start again. I have had my vehicle towed a number of times, no dealership i have talked to seems to know how to fix the problem. Some dealers won't even take the van as a trade-in. This was an investment for my family to travel, now i'm to scared to let anyone ride in the van from fear of being stranded. Last night we were stranded and had to call a cab to pick us up for a $50 ride home. This is not acceptable for a consumer to go through these problems and chrysler has no idea how to fix it without you having to pay thousands of dollars for a quick fix and then it happens again. Going through these problems makes want to never own another american made car, and they wonder why people are starting to buy foreign cars with higher prices but better longevity.
Whenever i come to a stop sign while on a hill, the vehicle rolls backward while in drive unless i keep my foot on the brake continuously.my ford van and escort and my volvo do not do this when on the same hills.this has happened since the vehicle was first purchased, and nearly caused an accident the first time as i was rolling backward into another car.luckily the other car honked and alerted me.i spoke with the dealer salesman and the dealer mechanic who said that is the way all new transmissions are.we then test drove another chrysler town and country that also did the same thing.this concerns me; if the new owner is not made aware of this rolling backward hazard they are at high risk of having an accident.

I was cleaning out my van on friday, february 4, 2005after work while my 3 kids played outside.my van started rolling backward down the driveway (in park, car off, key out of ignition enough so it wouldn't beep at me)my 8 year old daughter had been sitting in the driveway behind my van drawing with sidewalk chalk.she had gotten up to get something out of her dad's car just in time to avoid being run over.my passenger door was open and so was his so they collided as my van rolled backwards down the drive.i hopped in the van and tried to apply the brake, but the only thing that stopped my van from rolling in to the road was his car.they "locked" together.i contacted chrysler and they did send an inspector out, but a couple weeks later denied any responsibility.i am very thankful that my daughter was not behind my van and hurt or killed by this freak accident, but needed to record this incident in case others have similar problems.
There is not a locking mechanism to putting the car in gear while depressing the brake. I noticed it by accident one day while i was cleaning it and accidentally pulled it into gear. Not only is this a major safety concern but is also a theft issue.chrysler really needs to step up to the plate with some of the major safety issues with this vehicle!

When consumer attempted to move or pull into traffic, the vehiclehesitated, and at times the vehicle did not go into reverse.
When going up hill (driveway)vehicle does not pull like normal, it hesitates and stutters.i must put it into low in order to pull the hill.also, when reversing vehicle vibrates and moves very slowly.vehicle drives fine in normal conditions, the only problem is pulling up hill after a stop and reversing at any time.
On three occasions, once sitting still, second backing, third at 55 mph, transmission slipped into neutral.
Parked and put the vehicle in reverse. Vehicle behaved like it was in neutral. Let the car idle for few minutes, and car overheated.consumer contacted dealer. *ml
Following a routine oil change service by a sears auto center my transmission began to malfunction. I checked the fluid level and found it over-filled by over a pint. I pulled the excess out to get it to the proper level. When it continued to get worse i took it to the dealer. They found particles in the pan and said the transmission had to be replaced. Tsin talking to the sears auto center about the issue, it was revealed they do not even carry the proper atf (atf+3 or +4) for chrysler transmissions. Obviously, when they "topped it off" they used dexron/mercon.curious if sears auto centers generally did the same, i checked with another center and found the same procedure (i.e. Using the wrong fluid) to be in place, although their service manual specs tell them to use only atf +3 in that chrysler transmission.it appears this may be a larger problem than local and could have contributed significantly to the poor record of chrysler transmissions in recent years. It is hard to believe this has not surfaced (or made public) by either sears or chrysler.
While driving 10 mph there was a loud noise coming from under the hood and vehicle started to slow down.vehicle was towed to dealer, the transmission needs to be replaced.
I was vacuuming my 1999 chrysler town & country van before church when my 1 year old son pulled the shifter out of park and the van rolled down our driveway.the drivers door struck a tree causing $1800 damage.the keys to the van were in my pocket.chrysler was contacted and sent an investigator out to determine what had occurred.i never received a copy of the investigation and contacted chrysler to obtain a copy and was told by them that i would need a court subpoena to have a copy sent to me.my van taken to the local dealer by the chrysler investigator to determine what was wrong.i was not given a copy of what they found and chrysler would not send one as well without a subpoena.while the van was at the body shop, i noticed that nothing was done to correct the fact that the van can be taken out of park without keys in the ignition.chrysler had the opportunity to fix this while they were doing their investigation and did nothing.
This van is very unsafe i need help
I purchased the vehicle on july 14, 2005. When the weather turned colder, i would back the vehicle out of my driveway and it would fail to engage into drive for 25 to 30 seconds. At times it would also fail to engage after making a full stop. I believed this to be a dangerous problem. When i took it to the dealer, i was told they were using a "new and improved fluid". There was nothing they could do to remedy the situation. The service manager told me it happens on his new car also. If what he says is true i can't believe there aren't many thousands of complaints. What can i do about this dangerous situation? i used a november date as the incident date, but it happens many times.

Car was running, the heat was on, the lights were on, and the car was in park.i doubled checked that the car was in park when i stepped out of the van.andria said she too looked to see if the car was in park and it was.i shut my drivers side door and headed to the garage to go inside while andria got her purse and book out of the front passenger car seat, where she had been sitting.i went into the house and unpacked the breakfast out of the mcdonalds bag for my girls and set down the 3 orange juices on the counter, near our toaster.i threw some garbage out into the trash under the sink that i had put into the mcdonalds bag, which was madeleines banana peel that she had been eating on the way to get andria. I had been inside the house for about 30 seconds or more. I then went out the door that leads to our garage to head to the car.when i stepped outside the door, i saw andria had unbuckled madeleine from her car seat and had madeleine in her one arm, as she was picking up hanna with her other free arm to carry both girls inside the house.i said i was leaving now and waited for them to join me near the door, which led to the house. I kissed both girls on the cheek and said goodbye.andria told me she hadnt shut the passenger side sliding door where she had gotten the kids out, as she had no free hands. (since she was carrying them both).so i started walking in a diagonal in the garage, to head outside the garage to the driveway to close the passenger side, sliding door, which was the only door, opened at that point.just as i was almost 2 steps away from being outside of the garage, the car started moving toward me. I screamed oh my god, andria the car is moving. andria had been standing on the step by the door that led to the house. I yelled for her to get the kids inside the house.i couldnt get outside the garage as the car had entered the garage now so i stepped back into the garage into my husbands garage space. Consumer's 3 years old child was able to put the key into the ignition switch, start the vehicle, and shift it out of park into drive without applying the brake pedal. Thiscaused the vehicle to crash into a tree. Upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy.there were no injuries to report. The dealer and manufacturer werenotified.
This vehicle engages into gear without the brake depressed.
Vehicle does not have the shift lock when foot is on the brakes. This is a safety defect.
4 year old child was able to put car in gear without touchingbrakes.
While driving at 45 mph it will shift into neutral by itself, when it slows to 5mph it shifts back into drive by itself.has happened 3 times in last 2 years computer shows no error codes and i am told never could happen as i describe it.not possible according to chrysler and the dealer.so far lucky no accidents. When changing gearsconsumer doesn't have to put onbrakes.there is no automatic interlock system.
Vehicle was able to shift out of gear without applyingbrake pedal. Would like to know weather this compliedwith fmvss. Dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time.please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
It is possible to shift into drive without first applying the brakes. This is a serious safety issue with small children. Manufacturer should do something about this problem before someone gets hurt!
There is no shift interlock system invehicle to preventchild from takingvehicle out ofpark gear. .

All four wheels on my mini-van are corroding and tire failures are resulting from the pitting on the wheels wearing the seals on the tires.the chrysler service department at our local dealership acknowledges that this is a failure which is presenting a safetly hazard, but states that chrysler will offer no assistance with this issue as the van is beyond the warranty limit for mileage.a second 1999 chrysler town and country limited mini-van belonging to a neighbour is experiencing the same problem.(dot number: m30dtiresize: 215/65r16)

My 1995 dodge caravan and my 1999 chrysler town&country both have gen 3 defective seat belts in them. They need to be recalled and replaced. *nlm
The dealership tells me that the seat belts will not activate unless there is impact. I would like you to open an official complaint, since i have tested several other cars, and they do not require impact before the seat belt stops. In other cars, the seat belt can be pulled quickly, and the belt immediately stops. In my minivan, the belt just continues out. Have also tried braking suddenly, and the selt belt does not get activated. This is true for all 4 captain seats in my car. Have researched on web site www.unsafebelts.com - as per this web site, the chrysler 1999 minivan is unsafe since it uses gen3 type belts. Request you to evaluate.
A)this form is horrible -- there is too much non-applicable information.b) i am a certified child passenger safety technician.i recentlyt have run into a problem with the cinch plates on the chrystler minivans.namely, they don't cinch and therefore require the use of a locking clip -- this runs counter to the 1996 act requiring restraint systems to be css freindly.please feel; free to contact me regarding this.
Equipped with gen 3 restraints.needs to be replaced with gen 4.

The heated seat on the driver side was heating up so hot that it would burn your bottom. Now it has seizes to work even with repairs.
Vehicle was equipped with seat heater and it burned through the fabric, burning the passenger.manufacturer was contacted, but they will not repair the seat.
I own a 1999 town & country lxi. On jan. 24, 2003 i had taken it to my local garage for a broken seat . I was informed that the seat track at the motor assembly was broken. Chrysler's position is that this is my responsibility. It is my contention that a seat should be able to withstand the impact of a crash, and not fail due to normal wear and tear. To me , this is a very serious safety issue.
Passenger seat broken.nlm
This vehicle was involved in a chain effect crash which was not related to this equipment failure. The failure occurred during the crash.when hit from the rear and pushed into another vehicle, the seat of the car broke in two ways;the back of the seat collapsed and the bottom part of the seat twisted slightly.the car was drivable from the scene of the accident.of four vehicles involved, this vehicle was the only one which sustained seat damage.the other three vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.the contact stated that the heated passenger side seat caught fire.the vehicle sustained approximately $10,000 worth of damages.the failure began while the contact was driving at an unknown speed, and the seat began smoking.he pulled off the road and the vehicle became engulfed in flames.the fire department arrived at the scene.a police report was filed.chrysler stated that there were no defects and the failure was due to how the vehicle was driven by the owner.there were no injuries.the current and failure mileages were 178,000.
1) use of heated seat.2) twice, heated seat overheated.each time it burnt a hole through the leather, and the last time it was smoldering.3) contacted chrysler, but safety from possible fire was not their concern.they were not interested in dealing with this problem because of the the age and milage of the vechile.they responded that my concern, especially in light of the expense and inconvience involved in this issue, was understnadable, but that my request for considerationin this matter must be declined.imagine that ... Expense and inconvience (their's of course) outweighs in their minds the issue of safety.as i review other complaints to the nhtsa i recognize a common thread with there heated seats.it obviously takes more than burning someone, or even burning a hole in the seat and then smoldering to address the issue of this fire hazard.i certainly hope that someone doesn't have to die from a car fire before action is taken.
Seat warmer heating element caused seat on t passenger's side to catch on fire.this happened while driving the van. Driver was able to put out the fire. No one was seating in the seat at the time.dealer has been called about the problem. Please provide any further information.
Driver began to smell smoke while traveling with seat heater on. Driver's legs began to burn from the seat, andturned the seat heater off. Manufacturer was contacted.
Seat heater on the driver and passenger's seats became too hot and scorched seat.mjs
Consumer stated the drivers seat heater becomes so hot that it is unusable, it was turned on for awhile, and after 10-15 minutes the vehicle smelled like smoke, and the seat was too hot to sit on and it burned 2 holes in the leather seat.

Passenger seat became extremely hot and pruduced smoke and burnt through the leather because the seat heater shorted out.
Our 1999 chrysler town & country's heated driver's seat developed a hot spot last winter. I took it to the dealership 6/23/04 to have a number of problems addressed, including the heated seat. They told us it checked out ok and that they couldn't find a hot spot, even though we knew there was. They said it was safe and that anyway the seat wasn't a warranted part. Because they said it would cost approx. $900 to replace, we decided not to do it. Also, because they said it was safe, i started using the heater again when the weather turned cold, although i had to keep turning it off when it got too hot. On january 18, 2005, i drove about 20 miles on the freeway, and when i got out of the car i noticed a burn hole in the seat--about 3/8" across--just in the location that had always felt too hot. I felt lucky that it hadn't burst into flames while i was on the freeway! i was really upset and took it into the dealership. They told me that there was no problem with these seats, but they offered to "share" the cost of replacement. The cost of the seat has now gone up to $1100, and they want us to pay $700 of that. I'm going to get the seat replaced because it's a safety issue, but i don't think we should have to pay for a faulty part. After the most recent incident, we started to do some research and discovered that quite a few other complaints have been made to nhtsa. I downloaded report #pe00-034 which was quite informative. I contacted chrysler's recall department today and was told that the "situation is under investigation." then i spoke to customer assistance, where i was told that they couldn't do any better that the $700 "co-pay." chrysler should not get away with not addressing this problem, just because there haven't been major injuries yet. Also, it does not seem right that customers should have to pay to replace what is quite obviously a defective component. I will ask the dealership to give me the burned seat when they replace it.
The seat heater was to hot, which caused the heater to burn a hole into the driver seat.
Front seat heaters become uncomfortably hot. Unable to safely use heaters, afraid of seats catching fire. Local dealer states nothing they can do under warranty even though this is a $36,000+ vehicle with an extended factory warranty.
On two separate occasionsdriver's seat heater burned through the seat. Dealer replaced the seat on the first occasion. Currently, the problem has recurred.the dealer was notified again. Dealer informed consumer that the seat will be replaced at consumer's expense.
While driving 15 mph driver's heated seat burned the driver, causing minor injuries. Consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.
The driver and passenger seats overheated.
The electrical heating of the leather covered seatswas being used due to cold winter climate. The passenger was dropped off but the seat heating was left in the on position. While driving down the road, a burning odor was noticed, then sparks and the leather cover and padding ignited. While stopping the vehicle to extinguish the flames, a hole the size of a quarter was burned into the seat back.the burn hole exists in the middle of the seat back in the threaded seam. Smoke damage exists on the upper portion of the seat back. The heated seat has stopped working.
Last year while i was driving the driver's seat went on fire. It burned a small hole in the seat and caused a severe blister on my leg before i switched it off. The dealer said it would be over $1100 to fix it. I today read all the reports on line about this problem, so i am now reporting it. I do not understand why something as dangerous as this is not the subject of a recall.
I have a 1999 chrysler town and country van. It has all the options and i puchased this vehicle brand new. I have taken excellent care of it. The problem is that the drivers seat, leather with heat, is overheating in one area. It gets so hot that it burns the back of my leg. If i leave the heat on for more than 1 minute, i can smell burning leather. I know that if i left it on, it would probably catch fire. I can see a small spot on the seat where the leather has actually burned. Unfortunately, i cannot use this feature anymore. It is too dangerous. I am courious as to other incedents of this same thing hppening.
Driver's seat on our 1999 chrysler town and country ignited as a result of the seat heater malfunctioning.it burnes a hole through the leather seat and singed my wife's pants.
Both the driver and passenger seat warmers are extremely hot, the driver side seat warmer apparently shorted out or burned the seat as there was a bad smell as if something was burning within 5 minutes after starting the van, then the seat warmer did not work and when i got home and inspected the seat a small 4cm hole was burned through the leather with apparent blackened seat material beneath.
This is a corrected complaint from odi#759939.we purchesd the van with 38,600 miles. We believed we had a 3,000 mile or 3 month warranty.the driver's side seat heater shorted and caused the seat to catch fire. Not a smolder, a real fire with flame and smoke etc. My 4 children were in the vehicle. Fortunately my wife was standing near the van and was able to put the fire out with snow.we notified scott morris at morris motors and he said he would check into the situation.we have waited patiently and only called every couple of weeks. He kept telling us chrysler would call us. No-one ever called. Today scott said he will do nothing and should have let the van burn up. No kidding, he said that. We called chrysler ourselves. They told us they would do nothing and not to call back and that we could not speak with any supervisors.what if the van burned with my children in the vehicle and we couldn't put the fire out? what if the van burns while parked in my garage and causes a huge catastrophe?we need help and no-one is willing to help us.they are, in fact, rude and sarcastic. All we are asking is for a new seat that is working properly and safely. That is all we want.please help.thank you. Nlm

Driver side heated seat would become very hot after 3 to 4 min. I would often have to suddenly locate the switch while driving to prevent being burned. On 1/25/04 i had just started driving with the seat heater on but got out of the car to talk to my sister. After about ten minutes i returned to my car (still running) to find it full of smoke. I also noticed a hole burned through the leather seat and a smoking wire showing through. This area is at a seam near the middle of the seat. I feel that this is a major safety hazard. The heat switch is located on the side of the seat and is often knocked on without my knowledge. I fear the passenger seat may also burn up since it is often not occupied but in the on position.i noticed in my 2003 version of the same van, the seat heat switches are on the dash instead.the chrysler parts dept. Tells me it will be over $800 each just for the seat cover/heater unit. I have read about similar seat fires in other 1999 town & country vans.
The seat warmer did not perform as designed.
The heated seats continue to get hot after turning the temperature down.consumer stated it made it hard to drive when the seat continued to get hot.consumer could turn them off altogether, but could notuse the seat heater.....
Both driver side and passenger side seat heaters get too hot. The driver's side heating element burned through the leather seat. The heater cannot be used safetly. We are concerned about it starting on fire.

Van purchased new in 7/99.now has 30,000 miles on it and final payment is next month.in dec. 02, drivers side heating element went out.in feb. 03, passenger side went out.noticed a small burn hole in seat, took it to dealer, they would order new elements, but we'd have to live with the hole.feb 24, dropped son off at school, driving to work, kept smelling something.looked over and smoke was coming out of the hole in the passenger seat.pulled over, put it out with snow.got to work, called the dealer, they told me to bring it in the next day!!when leaving work, seat motor kept running.took it to the dealer immediately, asked them to pull the fuse so there would be no power to the seats.they said there was no way it disconnect the seats.when husband got home, he reached under the drivers seat and pulled the fuse.took it in the next morning, said they would check it and order new element.one hour later they called and said they would have to order new seats for both driver and passenger side.that was 2/25/03. Today is 6/19/03, still not fixed.dealer says they have passenger side seat but not the drivers side.it is still at factory.after 2 months of calling, they have said the factory shipped it out 6/17 and should be here in about 2 weeks.i refuse to let them put the passenger side in without the drivers side being fixed because i am afraid it will catch fire also.chrysler customer assistance is no help whatso ever.they refuse to give me the district reps number.the service dept at the dealer is no help, they just keep saying it is ordered.if it wasn't for the parts manager, we'd probably never get the seat at all.from the looks of the number of complaints on this site, these seats should have been recalled.this is only one of the problems i have had with this van and definitely will not be purchasing another chrysler product.they do not stand behind their 5 star rating. *nlm
Heating system on passenger seat caused fire that burned seat.
The driver'sheated seat malfunctioned, and burned through the leather seat.

While driving to work, i smelled something burning. I looked over and my passenger side seat was smoking. I turned off my seat heaters and when i stopped the van, i noticed there was three holes in the front part of the seat.the heat coil had burned through.
The contact stated that once the vehicle was started, the gears could be shifted without the contact depressing the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where they advised him that the brake shift interlock was not placed in that particular year, make and model vehicle. Therefore, the failure was considered a normal characteristic of the particular vehicle.the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000. The current mileage was approximately 185,000.
My 17 year old son was driving the car; he applied the brakes while approaching a red light and the pedal went to the floor.he was driving slow enough and started braking soon enough that he was able to stop the car prior to the intersection by pumping the brake pedal vigorously.both of the solid front brake lines had rusted out at the connection points with the flexible hoses... I had previously replaced the rear brake lines due to similar rusting problems (3 years ago), and did ask the dealer to inspect the front brake lines about a year ago prior to letting my son drive the 'old' minivan; the brake lines were given a clean bill of health...
Snow or ice leaked into my rear brakes, my rear brakes locked up and van immediately stopped.there was a load pop when this happened.the van had to be towed to the dealer.we were not injured because we were going very slowly when this happened but it could have been tragic if we had been in heavy traffic or traveling ata high speed.i think this could be a problem on other vans like ours and that it has probable caused some serious crashes.

Dealership tried but could not repair wharever is causing the clunking noise coming from under the front suspension.other refers to seat heater burning a hole in the seat, dealership and manufacture refuse to repair.
Hit the brakes heavily to avoid a stopped vehicle. Four miles later, the brake pedal went to the floor while proceeding down a three mile mountain road. The vehicle was finally stopped by placing the transmission in low range, pumping the brakes and application of the emergency brake. Brake fluid was leaking from both metal brake lines just aft of the anti-lock control valve. The metal lines are severely corroded at the junction of the solid metal line and the braided stainless steel section.search of the internet at "www.ripoffreport.com" revealed that mine isn't an isolated case. Report #153655 at that site reads identical to my experience.
All four rims rusted out.all four ramps and tires collapsed.the brakes could not be fixed because the van runs so hot.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.while the contact's daughter was approaching a traffic light, the brake pedal extended to the floor when it was depressed.the vehicle barely slowed down and glided through a red light.a mechanic stated that the brake light separated from the stainless steel to the solid steel.the current mileage was 100,020 and failure mileage was 100,001.
Master cylinder leaked into the power brake booster which caused my entire brake system to fail. If the vehicle had been moving at the time of failure, it could have caused many fatalities. The dealer fixed it at no cost, however, i believe that this component should be investigated. The dealer was not concerned that this could have caused many fatalities.

Vehicle was losing brake fluid which causedbrakes to fail. Whenbrakes failbrake pedal goes to the floor, losing all functions.brake fluid has to be invehicle at all times in case of a refill. Dealer was notified. Please provide more information.i
Consumer was traveling 55mph onhighway and there were deers in the middle of the road dancing.however, deers were far away, up the road.there was time forvehicle to stop. Consumer applied the brakes two times, but brakes didn't stop. Vehicle. Third time she applied the brakes, theygrabbed a little bit.but, it was too late, vehicle ran into the deers.vehicle suffered damage.dealership was aware of malfunctioned brakes.there was air inbrake lines.rotors were heated becausepads and rotors were blue, and pads and rotors were replaced.
There was a noise coming from front brakes.took vehicle to dealer, and they replaced pads and turned rotors. Consumer feels that the materials used in the brake rotors are not up to standard.
Rotors have rusted from inside, resulting in a collision.dealer has inspected vehicle.
We have a 2 year old daughter this should never happen
This van is very unsafe i need help
When applying brakes, pedal sank almost to the floor indicating a fluid leak.brakes barely worked at all and limped to chysler dealer who found ruptured rigid brake line where it joins to a short braided flexible section.two long rigid brake lines that run nearly the length of the vehicle were replaced and as requested old parts were returned to me.only in the immediate area where the flexible line joins the rigid lines was there severe rust and corrosion.one of the lines had rusted through and ruptured at this point.the rest of the rigid lines were free of corrosion.the vehicle is 5 years old with 100,000 miles in a relatively low salt environment, there should not be severe corrosion at this time causing brake failure.the joint area between the flex line and the rigid line is a design fault that should be addressed.photographs and the replaced parts are available for examination.
Problems with the clock-spring(cruise control, horn, remote radio controls, air bag warning light) previous problem with hydraulic brake master cylinder . Replaced on 1/14/03 [64,100]. *nlm
I had to have the tank onmaster cylinder replaced due to seeping of brake fluid. No obvious source of the leak was determined. It seemed to be coming from around the rubber seals where the tank attaches to the master cylinder. The first warning of the leak was the brake warning light. Upon checking the fluid it was discovered to be very low. It was refilled to the proper level. The tank area was well cleaned and dried. Within hours the tank was again wet with fluid. The level gradually decreased over the next several days as the fluid seeped out. No brake failure was observed, on loss of fluid from the tank. I had a local mechanic purchase a new tank from a dealer and put it on the car. New rubber seals were provided with the tank. Time will tell if this has fixed the problem.
Brake pedal goes down all the way to the floor, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer has been notified.ph.
Dealership tried but could not repair wharever is causing the clunking noise coming from under the front suspension.other refers to seat heater burning a hole in the seat, dealership and manufacture refuse to repair.
Strut tower corroded and spring and strut popped thru and caused loss of control.
Every time it rains my serpentine belt comes off which causes extremely hard steering. Mechanics say it is a chrysler tensioner problem and common. I have replaced tensioners twice in the last 2 years and many (10=) belt changes to put belt back on. Fortunately i have been driving slow at the times (5-6 times in the last 6 months) this has occurred. Just a matter of time before a fatality occurs due to this recurrent problem. Time for someone with clout to get involved and make chrysler fix this problem.
Consumer 1999 town & country minivan steering interlock did work. Vehicle rolled down the driveway nearly crushing passenger.*** no answer required***the consumer's one year old son was able to move the gear shift out of park although the consumer had the key in his pocket.the vehicle rolled down the consumer's driveway before striking a tree.an investigator came to the consumer's home to inspect the vehicle.the investigator took the vehicle to the dealer who determined that the steering interlock was not functioning.the manufacturer denied any responsibility because the consumer had not used the parking brake.the manufacturer then closed the file because the van had 3 outstanding recalls.the consumer has not moved since purchasing the vehicle.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country. The contact was driving in rainy weather at approximately 55 mph when she traveled over a puddle of water and the steering wheel seized. The battery warning light and the key icon illuminated. The steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn and the contact moved to the side of the road where the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000.
Consumer states while traveling in heavy rain vehicle loss all power steering and serpentine belt falls off. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information. Ts
Major problem is serpentine belt coming off and causing a loss of steering. It was not until this last repair that a bracket was installed from a service bulletin dated 7-2-99. Only the first repair was prior to this date.this is a major problem, fortunately for me every time the belt came off i was in a parking lot.
I drove through a puddle today traveling at about 30 mph when i lost my steering. Luckily i was bout .5 miles from home. By the time i got within .25 miles my temperature warning light had come on. When i got to my driveway i noticed that the serpentine belt was dragging. This same thing happened to my daughter about 5 weeks ago.my vehicle is a 1999 chrysler town & country and i understand this is a habitual problem. My service person repaired the vehicle.he said i was lucky it happened on a residential street and not on a highway.
I have a chrysler town and country limited 1999 with 21,000 miles. Last week while pulling from a parking lot. I heard a noise in the engine and the car stopped and it was impossible for me to steer the wheel. I looked in the engine and i found the belt loose and the the belt tension pully and the bolt under the car. The car towed to the chrysler dealer. Now several questions raised about this car, which i got no answer from the technical manager.

Luckily i was driving very slow because i had just got on my street, and then my steering went completely out, i managed to get over to the side of the street, when i got out of the car, the parts of the car were on the ground. I was going to get on the highway.
While making a slow right hand turn it became difficult to steer vehicle. Dealer determined power steering unit and idler arm had to be replaced.
Power steering pump made a loud growling noise; accompanied by difficultly turning the steering wheel.upon checking the power steering pump resevoir, a large quantity of metal filings was found.pump assembly & rack & pinion acutator were replaced.
Power steering failed without any warning causing potentially dangerous condition.
Consumer's wife was drivingwhen she rode through a puddle of water, andserpentinebelt came off, causing her to lose power steering, etc.the consumer learnt from the dealership that thesserpentine belt failure was a common problem.
When backing out consumer noticed vibrationand loud noisescoming from vehicle. Consumer contacted the dealer, dealer has linked the problem to power steering failure. Dealer has replaced the power steering pump on several occasions. Please provide any further details.
While in parked position with engine running, belt tensioner broke off creating a loud noise and fell to the ground.

1999 chrysler town and country right side steering tie rod failed.*mrit appeared that the rubber seal may have cracked open and allowed water into the area of the balland caused corrosion.

Ltr fm (ct) concerned about the safety of his daughters defective 1999 chrysler town and country, the tie rod fell off.the consumer stated most automobile manufacturers have eliminated the grease fittings that most tie rod ends use. Apparently, there was a crack in the rubber grommet that enclosed the ball and road surface water leaked in and corroded the ball and enclosure.after the ball and socket had experienced sufficient reduction, it finally slipped out of the enclosure and dropped to the ground.

Took van in for slight engine noise and mechanic noticed that strut tower was nearly rusted through.took to the dealer who stated that the car was unsafe to drive under any circumstances since one rough piece of road and the car body could fall to the ground and the strut assembly come through the dash into the passenger compartment.this will now cost over 1500.00 to repair.chrysler issued a service bulletin on this in 2002, since they were aware that vans from 1998 to 2002 were subject to this.they called it a "cosmetic problem".any problem that will cause a metal object several feet long to violently and suddenly explode through the dash into the passenger compartment at the driver is hardly a "cosmetic problem"."cosmetic problems" do not render a vehicle unsafe to drive.chrysler has acknowledged the problem and redesigned the strut tower to eliminate this in later models.now they need to recall the vehicles that are rusting out before people die!

1999 chrysler town and country rusting strut tower has progressively worsened since by dealer, in 2005, told me that it is only a "cosmetic defect" and is a potential danger of rusting through.this is a critical safety issue and has been misclassified by chrysler. I now read on the web site that more owners are similarly affected.

While driving, the left rear passenger door will open on its own.all doors are locked before i start the car.this first began last june, while driving on the highway at approximately 55 mph.it happened about once every 2-3 months.now it is happening at least 2 times a week.i am scared because i have no indication prior to its happening.a lot of the time there is no place for me to pull over to close the door.then i am afraid the van will cut off because the open door light stays on while i am driving.this car has a little over 88,000 miles.i bought this car used 2-3 years ago.

Strut tower has severe rusting that may lead to a collapse on the front tire.
Structural strut housing is failure do to rust perforation.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country.in june of 2006, the contact was informed that the strut tower could detach from the vehicle and cause a crash.the vehicle was not repaired at that time and the mechanic warned him that a failure was eminent.in 2007, he took the vehicle to a repair shop for minor service and was informed that he could die if he continued to drive the vehicle.he was also informed that the strut mount tower was rusted out.as a result, it could separate at any given moment, burst through the hood of the vehicle, and cause the wheel to fall horizontally.however, the contact continued to drive the vehicle because he had no other means of transportation.he took the vehicle to jiffy lube for an oil change and had to sign a form acknowledging that the vehicle was unsafe to drive.the contact called the manufacturer, but was treated rudely and was disconnected.he feels that his vehicle is a safety hazard and could lead to a fatal crash.the current and failure mileages were 160,000.

There wasno incident yet. The driver's side upper strut bracket is rusted about a 1/4 of the top side. Don't know where the moisture could have come from? the seals above that area seem ok. Noticed that the driver side front strut support is severely rusted, as is the case with numerous other owners of this vehicle.this must be a factory defect since it seems to occur primarily on the left front.this is a dangerous defect.

We took our 1999 chrysler town & country to our mechanic to have the water pump replaced and he informed us of the drivers side strut tower rusting out and should have it replaced as it could be a hazard while driving. This was reported to us on 08-2011 with the car having 142000 miles on it. Nothing has been done to repair it at this point. Am looking to see if there are any recalls for this problem.
The contact owns a 1999 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that after adding oil in the vehicle, he noticed that the shock strut towers were rusted and would cause the structure of the vehicle to fracture. The vehicle was neither inspected nor repaired for the failure.the failure mileage was approximately 158,000. Updated 3/14/11the consumer stated the strut tower was rusted and the strut broke through the body of the tower. The strut came to rest only inches away. The local body shop rebuilt the tower by welding sheet metal . He formed and reinforced the shock tower. Updated 06/30/11

The driver side strut mount at the top of the wheel well has completely rusted and can break off. Not sure on the criticality of this defect, but looks very unsafe, and chrysler needs to take some action.
While doing general car care (cleaning the battery) i noticed severe rust on the left strut tower at the spring seat.the area is supporting the weight of the vehicle and if it fails will cause the left front tire to move into contact with the car body and prevent normal steering to avoid collisions.secondarily, suspension dampers cannot be replacedsince the strut could not be re-attached.poor damper condition of course affects the drivers ability to control the vehicle on imperfect pavement.
We own a 1999 chrysler town and country minivan.we purchased the vehicle used in 2001.we haven't had any problems with it until 2005 and then we had to replace the water pump.the mechanic noticed that the strut towers were severely rusted.he mentioned that this is a known defect with the chrysler product.we would never have known otherwise--we didn't even know what a strut tower was until he pointed it out.if one or both of the the strut towers were to give way after hitting a pothole (or just from continued rusting) this could cause a sudden change in steering geometry, and or complete loss of steering, and or the tire well dropping onto the tire and acting like a brake, and or blowing out completely. Any of these scenarios could easily contribute to a serious, even tragic accident involving one or more vehicles.imagine if we were driving on the highway at speeds of 55-65 miles per hour and the the strut were to give way.the chrysler dealer, district manager and chrysler customer service rep all refused to help us in any way because we just happened to notice it outside of the warranty period.i feel that this is a huge safety issue and chrysler is being very uncooperative not to mention irresponsible by putting many peoples lives in jeopardy.
Strut tower inside of hood is almost rusted through. Mechanic said that it could cause strut to break through and collapsewhile driving. The strut tower is protected from the weather. Why is it rusting out?
While the vehicle was at the dealer for general inspection, the dealer informed the consumer that the metal on top of strut which held the strut in place was corroded and need to be replaced.
The strut tower on my chrysler town & country minivan has severe rust on the top. The metal is peeling and the strut is pushing through. This was discovered today when i took the van in to have it detailed. This is a low mileage van which is always maintained in top condition.

Tireswere losing air pressure. Dealership examinedvehicle for this problem, and replacedtire valve stem. Work performed by dealership did not remedyproblem. Dealership then diagnosed that there was a possible chemical reaction with tire repair sealant, whichconsumer claimed was never used with this vehicle.an employee at a salvage yard informed consumer that problem of continued loss of air pressure in tires could be related to a chemical reaction with the chrome plating ofwheel.please provide any additional information / documentation.
Right front tire went flat.inspection by local repair shop found that the wheel rim had sustained severe corrosion damage.corrosion had eaten through the chrome plating on the aluminum ,and caused pinhole leaks, leading to the loss of air pressure.inspection of the other three wheels indicated moderate corrosion on one of the other rims. Tires losing air due to chrome plated aluminum rims being badly corroded.
Wheel rims are are leaking due to oxidation on the plating.all tires leaking air weekly.note the number of complaints about this problem indicates it is common to this vehicle.
Consumer had problems with a tearing on a tire. Dealer was contacted, and stated that the rimswere bad.
I have two wheels on this vehicle that kept going flat with no aparent reason.investigation revealed it was corrosion around the valve stem.this was originaly blamed on salt corrosion. This vehicle hasn't been in salt as i am a snow bird and go south for the winter.further investigation revealed savere corrosion around the safety and sealing bead.in the inner section of the wheel where it is only .150 inch thick the corrosion is .110 inch deep.i feel this is a serious defect and have replaced the two defective wheels.one of the wheels when removed contained about 1/2 cup of what appeared to be water.
Veh. Has been in shop since new 19 times.hood misaligned, doors misaligned, tack stop working, horn stop working, sides sliding doors dragging, steering column loose, air compressor replaced twice, belt continues to jump off veh. Which has almost caused the operator of the veh. To t-bone another veh. On a right turn from an intersection.chrysler seems not to care until someone is either seriously hurt or killed. Belt issue has been brought back on 4 seperate occasions and i am afraid to let my family drive the veh.
There is an known issue with town&country van b/t certain years. I have a 1999. When water splashes from the road or runs off the vehicle, the water lands on the serpentine belt, and causes the belt to slide off. When the belt slides off, the power steering fails to such a degree that it makes the vehicle difficult to maintain control. There is a patch that chrysler issued, but not did not deem it a recall. I believe this issue is bad enough that it could cause significant problems. I've had this happen several times. Not driving through puddles, but just having a wet road can cause (and has caused) an issue. The fix is 400+$, which is ridiculous considering that this is a known issue that chrysler created a fix for, but won't recall.i've replaced every belt, tensioner, pulley etc, and the mechanic frankly said its a known problem with certain years of town & county.
Dealership tried but could not repair wharever is causing the clunking noise coming from under the front suspension.other refers to seat heater burning a hole in the seat, dealership and manufacture refuse to repair.
Major problem is serpentine belt coming off and causing a loss of steering. It was not until this last repair that a bracket was installed from a service bulletin dated 7-2-99. Only the first repair was prior to this date.this is a major problem, fortunately for me every time the belt came off i was in a parking lot.
Wanted to trade van in and they told me do to safety factors could not take in on a trade. Said that the rust on van under carriage was so bad that motor could fall out and it was not worth taking in on a trade do to this problem
Seven (7) attempts for this vehicle to be replaced under the lemon law, federal law and virginia state law.*sc
Air bag light constantly on, no horn no cruise control no radio control. Went to dealer for recall on airbag steering wheel clock spring and was told i would have to pay for diagnostic and also pay for part " in case it was not covered. This is not how a safety recall should be performed to my understanding
I was pulling into gas station when the van suddenly accelerated by itself.
When disengaging speed control by depressing brake pedal, vehicle would idle high and gain speed. Dealer has been notified, and could not remedy problem.
Cruise control does not work.when it is on and set it does not hold speed.if left on it will unexpectedly accelerate and then will notturn off with the brake.the only way to turn it off it at the steering switch.it was not working one night and the van acellertaed as i was changing lanes on ice.my reaction was to brake and van acelerated immediatley after i took my foot off the brake.good thing i remembered quickly to use swithch at sterring wheel for there were other auto around.the chysler service center that i have taken my van to three times has not been able to diagnose this problem yet and therefore it is not fixed.i will continue to try and get the cruise control fixed .i never use my cruise control because it is so dangerous.i hope no others are injured discovering this porblem.
My 1999 town and country imtermittenly will not start.we've taken it to the shop several times and they can find nothing wrong.the speedometer, tachometer, etc. Also has shut off by itshelf while driving.
While driving about 65 mph vehicle suddenly started dropping speed, rpm's went up asconsumer applied accelerator, but vehicle kept slowing down. Dealer could not find problem, this happened again in september2001.
Air bag light stays on for 5-6 months, later cruise control & horn in steering wheel quit working. Took vehicle to body shop and they said clock spring had failed and needed replaced.
The clock spring mechanism in my 1999 chrysler t&c caused the airbag warning light to illuminate; other items in the steering wheel area do not work- 1) cruise control, 2) radio volume and station control, 3) horn
Air bag lamp lighted up in dashboard simultaneously losing horn and cruise control. Ar involved: chrysler town & country lxi, 1999.
Parked and put the vehicle in reverse. Vehicle behaved like it was in neutral. Let the car idle for few minutes, and car overheated.consumer contacted dealer. *ml
While driving the vehicle, the speed cruise control is not working properly, manufacturer has been notified. Please provide further information. Ts
Air bag indicator light is on constantly, horn doesn't work, stereo controls on steering wheel don't work, cruise control doesn't work. I'm afraid airbag won't deploy on accident and i can't honk my horn if immediate problem arises.

I have chrysler town & country and both of driver side and passenger side windows stop operating. I had similar problems with the rear passenger side window last year.

Only the first repair was prior to this date.this is a major problem, fortunately for me every time the belt came off i was in a parking lot.
The driver's side view mirror is heated.there is a gel type residue coming from the mirror which has damaged it to the point where consumer can not see objects from it.also the passenger side view mirror intermittently will not move when attempting to adjust resulting in reduced visibility. *ph
Rear window cracked.nlm
I was driving the van at normal highway speed when the rear left window burst and shattered into pieces all over the back seat and rear storage area. Police examined it and told me that it did not appear as if anything struck the window, but that sometimes van windows such as that one shatter because of pressure. The manufacturer refused to provide any assistance whatsoever.dt
Windshield wipers worked intermittently, dealer replaced the motor, however wipers do not clean the window as they did before causing lack of vision, consumer requested that the dealer adjust the wipers and the dealer stated that the wipers were installed according to chrysler specifications and that if this adjustment was made, the consumer would be charged for it.

The windshield wipers failed.

Chrysler town and country 1999 3.8 l(1) events leading up to the failure: rain(2) failure and its consequences:dash lights flickering, windshield wipers stop and start, power locks unlock at highway speed.(3) what was done to correct the failure: called dealership & set up appointment.

Chrome wheelshave a pin hole which causes a leak. Tires cannot be properlyinflated.tires can not hold air for more than a day due to pin hole leak in chrome wheel.
Chrome wheels, which are standard equipment on the limited series, chrysler minivan, become corroded, and leak air at tire bead.i've had 2 flats, replaced the tires with new tires, and had 5 more flats.tire dealers say problem is caused by chrysler manufacturing process that causes flaking.chrysler declines to do anything to solve this safety problem.
Front right wheel fell off the vehicleunexpectedly at 20 mph.consumer maintained control of the vehicle before pulling over to the side of the road. Taken to dealer for repairs, but the cause was undetermined.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the rear passenger wheel separated from the vehicle once and the front driver wheel twice without warning.each time the vehicle was maneuvered off the road, and towed to independent repair shops, who repaired the damage to the brakes and the hub however, the problem could not be determined.the dealer was not contacted.
The vehicle is experiencing severe deterioration of the aluminum wheel plating at the tire bead causing continuous air leaks which cause the tires to slowly deflate, the consumer was informed by a plating company that the wheels had not been properly prepared prior to the plating process, the dealer stated there appeared to be some type of electrolysis occuring between the tire and wheels.nlm
Vehicle's corroded, chrome-plated wheels are causing tires to deflate.*mrthe consumer's wife initially stop driving the vehicle because of the corrosion. When the dealer was confronted with this information, they denied the request for new wheels because the vehicle was out of warranty. Later on the consumer purchased four new wheels and the dealer reimbursed him $400. Dollars. The consumer was still upset because first, the new wheels destroyed the aesthetic appearance of this luxury minivan. Secondly, other drivers of the same model experienced the same defect.*ph *mr
Both rear tires began going flat on a weekly basis.both began occuring at about the same time in august, 2000.no puncture could be found in tires.reported problem to dealer (antwerpen dodge, columbia, md).dealer serviced vehicle and reported they could find no problems.tires continued going flat.antwerpen again serviced vehicle, dismounted one rear tire from wheel and found severe wheel corrosion.told us it was our fault because we had put fix-a-flat in the tire...we had not!we have put nothing but air into these tires.chrylser was contacted (1-800-992-1997) and after speaking with antwerpen's service mgr declined to warrant defect.chrysler wants us to pay $625.00 per wheel to replace these defective wheels a that are only one year old!wheels have now been examined by a wheel specialty shop (ye ole wheel shop, 6363 washington blvd, elkridge, md).this shop repairs damaged wheels and does work for several insurance companies.specialty shop found no evidence of fix-a-flat or any other foreign material in tire/wheel.informed me that this type of corrosion was common with chrome plated wheels that also had been chrome plated on the inside surfaces.indicated that moisture had gotten into the tire/wheel assembly (probably through an air hose at a service station).the moisture then created a reaction between the chrome and the wheel material causing the wheel to "eat itself".wheel examined has holes in the inside of the wheel where the reaction has eaten completely through the material.shop informed me that quality manufaturers do not chrome plate the inside of the wheel to avoid this known problem.they also informed me that it was likely that all four of the wheels on this vehicle were bad.they will eventually become weak from corrosion and could break apart.chrysler continues to refuse to recognize the problem as a warrantable defect.this is a safety issue as the wheels could fail at speed on the highway causing a crash.
Consumer states tires are constantly losing air pressure.vehicle checked by dlr who determined that vehicle's rims are disintegrating.mr
Consumer had problems with a tearing on a tire. Dealer was contacted, and stated that the rimswere bad.
Rimswere corroding from inside out. Mechanic was told that this conditionwas unsual.
Chrome rims and wheels are peeling, this is causing the vehicle tires to flatten.
Right front and rear wheel rims are corroding, resulting in air holes causingtire to go flat.contacted dealer.consumer states that the chrome plating is flaking off.
The inside of three rims show signs of oxidation which caused air loss in the tires due to lack of a smooth surface with which the tire could mate, the shop stated that chrome plated wheels should not be used in winter as the road salts destroy the plate, consumer believes chrome plated wheels should never be offered as an option for vehicles delivered to regions with snowy winters and thinks they should be recalled.nlm
Whenlocal tire service center examinedtires for an air leakall ofwheels were corroded on the interior, allowing air to escape through the rim. Nts.the four chrome wheels were corroded and were replaced by the consumer. The consumer believes the wheels were defective and the manufacturer should reimburse him the cost of the wheels.
Dt*:the contact stated the left front and both rear wheel rims are corroded on the inside.due to the corrosion the tires will not remain inflated.the vehicle was taken to a body repair technician.
Safety complaint - corroding rims on chrysler town & country limited, (standard equipment) cause leaks and flat tires.the rims leak because of a faulty manufacturing process that causes the chrome to flake off around the tire bead. *ph
Consumer wasaware of other complaints relating tocorrosion and would like to see an investigation pending....
All four rims rusted out.all four ramps and tires collapsed.the brakes could not be fixed because the van runs so hot.
Consumer called complainingabout having problems withrims and the wheels.stated that they are original equipment and the chrome on the wheels rims is pealing off and damaging the tire from the inside because of the corrosion of the rims. Manufacture was contacted and stated that they never had a problems like that and that they would not replace it.
All of a sudden 3 of 4 tires were not holding air.slowly deflating requiring at least weekly inflation.took vehicle to tire shop where it was discovered that the aluminum/chrome wheels which came on the vehicle were deteriorating, making an air-tight seal impossible.will this condition ultimately affect the integrity of the wheel?contacted daimler/chrysler and they responded "...,your request for consideration in this matter must be declined," as the vehicle is out of the manufacturer's warranty period.
I have had to replace 3 of my my 4 chrome alloy wheels as they are coming apart at a seam near the bead of the tire. My first thought was that the rims sustained a blow, but it shows no sign of impact. This strikes me as a severe defect with possible serious injury implications. The dealer's service department was rude and dismissed any possibility of a potential defect.
Dealership has to replace all fourwheel rims because of corrosion.please provide any additional information / attachments.
The back passenger tire continuously goes flat which is due to the rims on the vehicle. The tire leaks where the welding starts on the rim. Please provide any further information.
Factory installed chrome wheels on my van.plating on bead of wheel is peeling allowing air to escape causing a safty hazard .
Tires losing air due to chrome plated aluminum rims being badly corroded.
Rims are developing holes inside of the rims and the air leaks out. Consumer tookvehicle todealership, andmechanic told him thatvehicle passedwarranty mark.left front and right front rims developed pin holes in middle of rim.
Wheel rims are are leaking due to oxidation on the plating.all tires leaking air weekly.note the number of complaints about this problem indicates it is common to this vehicle.
Consumer noticed that the tires looked as if they were going flat.vehicle was taken to a dealer, who informed the consumer that the rims were the problem not the tire.the rims become pitted, and allowed air to escape through the pits. Also, tire dealerinformed the consumer that many chrysler products were having the same problem with their chrome wheels.
