Clockspring failure.

While drivingthe vehicles air bag warning light illuminated and stayed on. Possible clock spring failure.vehicle made in march 98, 2 weeks outside of recall limit.

Advisor at chrysler stated clock spring has gone bad and that they get a lot of this problem!!!!.

Air bag sensor light came on and stayed on . Also, horn and cruise controlwere inoperative.

After starting the vehicle air bag light would come on and would stay on the reminder of the time that vehicle operated. Dealership had been notified, but the problem had not been resolved.

Ea01007.air bag warning light intermittently illuminates, indicating a malfunctionwithinair bag system. When light does illuminatecruise control andhorn become inoperable.

The vehicles horn no longer worked while driving.possible clock spring failure.*nlm

Air bag lighthas come on and will not go off also, the cruise control and the horn assembly is inoperable.consumer has not takenvehicle in todealership to be examined.consumer states the horn went out, as well as the steering column which locked and vehicle had to be towed into dealership and the parts had to be replaced, also the cigarette lighter does not work.

Airbag light was on, horn and cruise stopped working. Dealer statedclockspring assembly needed to be replaced. *jg

When turning the steering wheel the driver heard a rattling noise.the horn stopped operating and the interior lightingremained on. The vehicle had an air bag failure which also caused the cruise control to stop functioning.

The airbag light had been on for months and was on when i bought the car last november, 2013. So it had been on for an unknown period of time. The horn and cruise control stopped working after i blew the horn at someone who did not turn on green arrow in front of me. I am sure it was the clockspring which operates those three features. The dealer would not fix it at chrysler's cost because the vin number was not part of the clockspring recall.

Air bag failure due to broken spring coil wiring assembly.vehicle horn also failed.internet search shows this to be a very common failure in chrysler minivans.

The vehicles abs sensor light stayed on and horn did not function.*nlm

Airbag light came on, and horn stopped working.

The vehicles cruise control did not work.possible clock spring failure.*nlm

Vehicle continues to turn off when slowing down and must restart vehicle while approaching a light or going up a hill.vehicle taken to repair shop prior and could not find anything wrong with vehicle, repair shop confirmed issues.have report from shop indicating concern for safety while driving vehicle.looked for recalls regarding this and nothing reported.again, vehicle stops running intermitently and must restart vehicle.all power to vehicle stops.

Recently, my air bag light went on and is now illuminated continuously. Simultaneous to this, the horn stopped working. I have seen on the internet where others have had similar problems. Apparantly, it is a defective "clock-spring" device. This is a serious manufacturers' defect which renders the horn and the air bag useless. The vehicle cannot be driven nor will it pass inspection.what can i do to have chrysler repair rthe defect? thnak you.

The airbag light kept coming on, took to dealer, couldn't find problem.cruise control stopped working.found out it was the clockspring. Had to replace it myself at a cost of $90.00, would have cost almost $400.00 to have dealer install.

Failed part was the 'clockspring' assembly.

Defective clock spring caused problems withinsteering and cruise control operations. It can also effect horn and airbag light. The clock spring failed prematurly resulting in air bag and the cruise control failure.

Another satisfied customer - failed clockspring in a 1998 chrysler town and country mini van.

There has been a recall of the 1996-98 minivans for the clockspring failure. Dealer says that my van is not covered under this recall and chrysler's customer service center is of no help either.my 1998 t&c exhibits the exact same issues as the other minivans affected by this defective device (airbag light, cruise & horn not functional). The airbag and horn are safety devices and must be replaced/repaired. I have had to replace this part at my own expense. Why is my vehicle not covered under this recall? it has the same manufactured date, same issues, same defective part... I expect chrysler to pay for this repair ($233.94).

Air bag light was coming on dashboard. Consumer saw taken vehicle for service where at dealer clock spring had to be replaced.

Airbag warning light continues to come on and offat different times.

Clockspringfailed, causing air bagsand horn to malfunction.

Air bag light would keep coming on when vehicle has been started. Sometimes would go off by themselves, but mostlywould remain onentire time until vehicle has been shut down.

Air bag light sounds like same problem being investigated by nhtsa - air bag mechanism.what can i do from here?.

Airbag deploy while driving 55mph middle lane, could not see, van filled with smoke, almost crash with my 3 children in van, injury burns on armsignition failed 4 times replaced 2x under warranty

Consumer had to replace a defective clockspring which caused the air bag and horn to become inoperable.consumer is seeking reimbursement.*jg

The front struts and clockspring was replaced.

Consumer notice while traveling air bag indication light flashing and horn not working intermittently due to clock spring. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information.ts

Air bag lightstarted flashing on and off whilecruise control failed to engage or operate properly. Also, cigarette lighter recepticlefailed to operate. The dealership has not examinedvehicle to determine a cause for these problems.consumer states horn is inoperable for the second time now.ignition switch failed and was replaced.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that while starting the ignition, the air bag warning indicator remained illuminated. The failure recurred when driving various speeds. Additionally, the horn and cruise control became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. There was a recall associated with the failure under nhtsa campaign id number 04v480000 (air bags) however, the contact's vin was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000. Updated 05/19/14 mathe consumer repaired the clockspring. The consumer stated the failures all occurred before 118,000. The vehicle needed to be repaired when it was purchased. Updated 06/04/2014

Clock spring malfunctioned, causing cruise control and air bag to be inoperable. Consumer states that the dealer replaced the clockspring and only charged consumer for the labor.

Airbag light illuminated, horn and cruise control are inoperative, dealer replaced clockspring assembly.

While traveling air bag indicator light was flashing, there was no horn, and there was aloss of cruise control. Technician stated thatclock spring needed to be replaced. Dealer replaced clock spring.

Both airbags deployed. Driver sustained significant neck injuries because of his position. He wa slooking for traffic from right side and was leaning 3" from air bag.

The air bag light illuminated on the dash board, the dealer stated the clock spring needed to be replaced, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.*scc

This vehicle had two clock spring failures with the air bag warning light staying on. The first occurred at 3000 miles. The second failure caused cruise control to cease working. With power steering complaint, the vibration and grumbling in the steering at slow speeds was a cause of concern. After the steering rack was replaced, and longer steering hoses placed on the vehicle, the vibration continued in the steering, although somewhat subdued. The steering pump flow control valve was worn. When the fluid reached operating temperatures, the vibration increased and became more noticeable when driving for several hours. The steering felt non-responsive going into turns at slow speeds. I ended up paying for the steering pump replacement, since the dealership didn't consider my complaint a fault with the pump, although the steering is 100% better with the unit replaced.---*dt. ------dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis-------769523.

My air bag light would come on and go off and now it just stays on and horn does not work, i just learned there was a recall on the clockspring part a few years ago but i just bought the car used in april of 2006 and a few months ago i just had a brake problem fixed because light came on and that cost over $400.00 which i had to open an account to pay for as i am on disability and could not afford that amount so i sure can't pay hundreds of dollars again for something that is a defect.so far have not taken in to be checked as did not know what problem was until i started searching the web, had asked others in prior month but no one knew what could be causing it and had no cash to take it in.

Airbag light came on, horn and cruise control would not work.we had to have the clock spring replaced.missed a recall by 5 days.

Consumer was driving at approximately 25mph involved in front end crash by a vehicle that was also going 25 mph. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy, which could have caused injuries.

Airbag light stays on. Horn doesn't work.told by chrysler that the car is not among the cars recalled for clock spring failure.*la

Consumer requesting reimbursement for clockspring repairs. *mrph

Drivers side air bag has failed to energize and airbag light remains on. Also vehicle's horn in steering column does not work. Additionally, cruise control does not work.

Has happened over 100 times.dashboard gauges all remain at zero, car will not start.turns over, then dies immediately.i believe it is the security system killing the car.after 5 starts, won't even turn over.have paid for new alternator, new starter, mechanic looked at numerous times.**finally fixed** mechanic had another customer with same problem.found it was the entire instrument panel which needed replacing.at a cost of $700 for other customer. I went with a used model which is risky, but it has not done this again at all for 7 months.there are numerous reports on this site about this, and i thought i would help people out who have also spent a ton of money on this problem, with no resolution.

On a regular basis, van will not remain running. Start vehicle and it stalls immediately.it will do this for 5-6 starts, then will not even turn over.all gauges go to zero, no digital odometer, etc.if left for a few hours, will start again. Sometimes gauges zero out while driving.usually, tapping on the dash hard will return them to operating position.but not always.have been told this is anything from alarm system, main computer, aftermarket automatic starter shutting down alarm.one dealer replaced starter for +$300. Did not fix problem. This is a huge problem with a lot of these vans, as i can see by reading on the internet, and this site.this is an ongoing problem for 3+ years. No solution.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. While driving various speeds, the instrument panel failed to illuminate. The contact mentioned that the vehicle failed to start when in accessory mode. In addition, the contact would have to wait several hours before the vehicle would start. The independent mechanic was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 246,000.

While driving in snow and rain for one day the steering wheel froze up,the battery light went on, and i was no longer able to drive.i was on a flat street and in motion when it occurred.

When trying to start it will run for a few seconds then cut off, after a few tries it won't even turn over.after about an hour it might start and it might not.i have taken it to the chrysler dealership nearby and spent around $1,400 dollars just to get it home and the next day it does the same thing all over again.

I own a 1998 chrysler town and country and buying it was the biggest mistake i have ever made. My problem is a repeat of a thousand other peoples. I'll go to start my van and it will act like it wants to start, but then dies.at first it would start after being untouched for a few hours, but now it can take up to 2 weeks. We have had it towed 3 times and to 2 different mechanics, including 1 chrysler dealership, and everytime we are told the same thing. There is no way to disarm the alarm because it is built into the engine. I have a family that deserves a reliable car and this is not it. I can't afford to keep towing it back and forth from shop to shop.i need answers!..why was this issue not recalled by chrysler, when so many people are having the same problems. This is ridiculous and frustrating. Someone has to know how to fix this!!!!

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country.the contact stated that the interior lighting flashes on and off and the doors lock and unlock while driving various speeds.she further stated that the vehicle has 155,000 miles, but the odometer currently displays 855 miles.in addition, all of the lights in the gear box (prndl) are dim.the dodge dealer stated that the body control module failed and could cause the vehicle to shut off.the repair would cost $4,500.the failure mileage was 125,000.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the instrumental cluster failed and none of the gauges worked properly. Due to this short in the instrumental cluster, the vehicle would also stall and take a long period of time to start. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and they informed the contact that the entire instrumental cluster or the circuit board behind it needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 162,000. The gauges on this van are now severely malfunctioning. Speedometer is 23 mph off. The tachometer bits inches away from the red line although transmission is not over revving. Updated 11/09/2011 *ln

Travel about 15 miles to a residence, parked van for about 3-4 hrs, entered van and try to start, wouldn't turn over *thought it was a problem with starter and or battery*, tried jumping, wouldn't turn over. Waited appx 1hr later, tried starting, van started, drove home. Next day, tried to start van, wouldn't start, wait about 2 hrs, tried again, van started. Days passed and as i was driving, noticed all gauges going from normal to 0, did this throughout travel. Took van to branch auto electric to do tests, was told bcm was bad and the cost would be over $1200.00 *labor included*, i've done research online regarding other t & c's who are having the same problems. Now all gauges are not working, abs light stays on with the security alarm light. About 3 wks ago, started van, factory installed alarm system engaged and would not stop *while all *abs/service engine & etc., stayed on* tried turning van off and on, locking and unlocking locks, alarm still blared until i had to disconnect battery to reset. Since this is my only means of transportation, there's a serious problem.

Consumer states that while driving, without warning the power driver side seat started moving backwards and forward, the both power rear view mirror started going up and down. Driver was thrown against steering wheel. Which could off resulted in a accident. Ts

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. While driving approximately 55 mph, the instrument panel gauges failed and the vehicle stalled. The contact had to leave the vehicle parked for several days before it would restart. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 203,000.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that after refueling, the instrumental cluster board failed and caused the engine to become inoperable. The failure was experienced several times. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The contact replaced the ignition swithch; however the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 215,000 and current mileage was 250,129.

Cranked, started, ran for 1 second, and stalled. This happened three times in a row. Then it would not crank until we returned the next day and it started and ran fine. This became an intermittent problem over time and eventually failed altogether. Very mysterious but i found the cause and repaired it. It has not failed since i repaired it 7-21-2012. The problem was a cold solder joint on the bcm located behind the instrument cluster. Please contact me and i will explain.

The van starts but will not take any gas and die immediately. It will start about 4-5 times then not start at all. Like others who have filed a complaint, the gauges act funny then flatline. It usually takes several days before it will start again. I have had a computer hooked up to it but it doesn't read anything wrong with the vehicle. It is not dependable at all. I have replaced relays and gave it a full tune up.

When trying to start it will run for a few seconds then cut off, after a few tries it won't even turn over. After about an hour it might start and it might not. I took it to the chrysler dealership nearby and they wouldn't even look at my car, because it had over 100k miles. But with additional questions, they confessed that they could put a lot of hours and parts into the van, and still not fix the problem.

While driving 20 mph vehicle lost power steering/ power brakes and electrical system without warning.vehicle was inspected by dealer, and it was determined thatfan belt separated fromvehicle.

The vehicle is a 1998, chrysler town & country van (lxi).the problems are due to the malfunction of the "body control module," asdefined by snethkamp jeep & chrysler service department.due to the malfunction, the windshield wipers do not start properly when engaged and continue when in the off position.the engine has to be turned off to disengage or stop wipers.also, all door locks continue to lock and unlock when a door or doors are open, when the engine is started, and while driving.occasionally, before turning on the ignition, the alarm will automatically engage: must use the remote key (unlock) before engine will start.often, when inside, the only way to unlock a door or doors is to use the remote control key (unlock). *la

-gauges on dash loose power while driving-warning lights and messages light up on information cluster-often car will not crank engine when attempting to start, banging on dash will cause gauges to work, and then car will start.several times car will start and die after a few seconds, after multiple attempts, car will not start for several hours, leaving family stranded with no transportation.

Repeated dismount of serpentine belt from crankshaft pulley due to water splashing from right front tire. Has occurred four or five times since owning the 1998 vehicle in 2001. This caused the abrupt loss of power steering, braking and electrical power from the alternator. No action has been taken by chrysler to provide s shield to protect this area.

I bought a 1998 chrysler town and country and after 2 weeks the van started having problems. The car wouldn't start in the gas station on the first try but did start on the second. From that incident on the car would need several starts to get it running and the instrument panel would go dead while i was driving and then suddenly jump back on and die again. This went on for about a week and a half before it stopped starting at all. I have not been able to drive for over three weeks and not only wasted money buying the van but also, took it to a repair shop where the guy replaced the fuse panel for $200 and wanted to put in a new computer but i told him not to. This van is a disgrace and an inconvenience.

On intermittent occasions the minivan will not start.it will run for a couple of seconds then stall.after 3-5 attempts at starting, it will do nothing at all, not even turn over, but all the gauges work.this event does not generate an error code.after returning to the vehicle an hour or two later the car starts normally and will be fine for days.service tech's are unable to diagnose the problem - battery, fuses, starter, are all fine.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that when driving at various speeds, the speedometer needle would indicate a reading of zero. The failure recurred numerous times.every single gauge on the instrument panel failed, including the instrument panel back lights. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 160,000.

This vehicle has stalled while driving on the highway with my kids in the car leaving me with no power no brake had to quickly turn off to the shoulder and try to restart it is happening on a daily basis and is very dangerous i had a recall part replaced by dealer and still nothing something has to be done as i see this is a common factor and eventually will cause a major accident

I have a 1998 town & country and had several instances where all the dials on the dash would flatline and then come back up.then it started cranking then dying out immediately.it would crank 3 or 4 times and then not crank at all.if the battery cables were removed and then replaced it would then start, but that no longer works and it does not run at all.

Vehicle starts & dies, starts & dies and after a four or five attempts...it won't start at all.after a few hours or days it will start right up. When it does this the gauges are all flatlined.sometimes while driving, the gauges flatline and alarm set light comes on as well as check engine light and abs light. No codes come up for this problem even though the dealership wants to charge $119 just to diagnose the problem. This has happened repeatedly....new battery, new starter...among many other new items.have not replaced the ignition switch, brain, or instrument panel. Have been told it could be either one of these things......i am tired of just putting in random parts.

My complaint is virtually identical to a previous one, numbered 10167790.my car willstart, run for a few seconds, then shut off.aftera few tries, it won't turn over at all.this happens at random times.it's a gamble as to whether the car will start or not, when i go out.it seems to have something to do with the theft deterrent system, because i believe the last two time this happened, prior to this happening,ny car alarm would set itself off, when opening the door.

Fan/electrical relay and battery failed.yh

The factory alarm has been shutting the van down, the speedometer freezes then shoots up to 120,the fuel gage, temp gage stop work tries to stall going down the road.i have read on the net that other people are having the same problems with alarm shutting them down.they need to repair this problem as soon as possible.i don't need to get stranded some place with my grandkids in the van.this has been an on going problem for a while, its getting worse.i would like to see chrysler do the right thing and fix this cheap made problem.

Dt*: the contact stated, when trying to start the vehicle, the engine turns over, runs for a few seconds, then shuts off. After a few minutes to an hour, the vehicle will restart and continue to run. The gauges on the instrument panel do not operate at times. The dealer can not determine the cause of the problem nor diagnostic testing has not registered any codes.

1998 chrysler town and country. Consumer states vehicle would not start *tgwthe consumer stated the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer kept the vehicle for three weeks and was unable to duplicate the problem. When the consumer retrieved the vehicle from the dealer, he made a stop and when he returned to the vehicle, it would not start.the consumer waited 30-45 minutes and then the vehicle started again. The consumer returned to the dealer and they kept the vehicle for a week, but they were still unable to duplicate the problem. The dealer then stated the body control needed to be replaced. After the replacement, the consumer had the same problem again after driving for a week.the consumer returned to the dealer again. The next day, the consumer received a call from the dealer stating there was a short in the instrument cluster board.

Battery totally dead at 19000 miles (20 months-orig. Battery), 31k miles (39 months-1st replacement) and now 40k miles (52 months-2nd replacement).there are no warning signs that battery is getting weak.first two times diagnosis was just that battery wouldn't hold a charge-->replace battery.i previously have asked for a more in depth diagnosis to find root cause of why battery wouldn't hold a charge.now that vehicle is out of warranty, dealer is happy to do the $70 diagnosis.if that had been done the first time (under warranty), i probably wouldn't have had to come back the second and now third time for the same problem!

I just started driving my car this morning, when i noticed white smoke coming out from under the hood.none of my engine warning lights were on, and the temperature gauge was in the normal range. This problem only occurs in colder weather of approximately 35 degrees, or colder.upon starting the vehicle the entire dash (speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer, etc) will be inoperative.while in virginia over the holidays this problem was occurring every day.originally, this happened only when starting the vehicle.while in virginia over the holidays it also occurred while driving on the interstate.at that time, the engine check light also came on, and the anti-lock brake light came on.this vehicle has been at the dealership, until yesterday, since december 30, 1999, when i returned home to beaufort.they have been able to duplicate the problem and attribute it to an unknown voltage rise (from 2.5 amps to 3.0), but have not been able to correct the problem and still do not know what is causing it.we have contacted chyrsler customer service, who has opened a corporate file (#660213), but have no other information from them.this problem has occurred from the very beginning of this particular vehicle, though butler chrysler believed that they had corrected the problem when we purchased it.we first found that it still existed in november, and has reoccurred problems since, until it was given to them 12/30/99 to be fixed. They returned the vehicle to us yesterday, not repaired, until they decide what they are going to do.we feel this is an unsafe vehicle to be driving.

I purchased this van dec 2010. I was coming home from work at 9pm driving on the interstate and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor - no brakes. Next day i took to shop and was told all the lines were rusted and needed replaced. I had all new brake lines installed front to back by a repair shop in march 2011. Once again, i had the same exact problem today, just over a year- except the lines were not rusted.08/21/2012 - driving on a state road going about 40 mph coming to a stop light slowing down, suddenly the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. No brakes. Fluid was gushing out by the rear tire. I pulled to gas station and the fluid was leaking/dripping out. The more the brake pedal was pushed the more fluid was forced out. I could have been in an accident even killed. Lucky for me it was 1 pm in the afternoon. I moved from indiana 6/1/2011 to florida. The van now has 180,000 miles.

Serpentine belt slipped off when driving in rainy conditions with child in vehicle.causing loss of power steering and engine to overheat.was stranded and had to call family to be picked up.had to have car towed and pay out of pocket expense to have serpentine belt put back on.

While driving in snow and rain for one day the steering wheel froze up,the battery light went on, and i was no longer able to drive.i was on a flat street and in motion when it occurred.

1998 town and country will stop right after starts.after 3 times it will longer start. Have replaced the engine module for $250.00. This has fixed the problem for atleast 2 years. When it started again i replaced the module again. It is still working after 14 months. Cheaper than taking to dealer and easy to replace.

- the contact owns a 1993 chrysler town and country.while driving 10 miles or more and accelerating the vehicle shook.the contact stated it was not related to the steering.the front axle was replaced 3 times, new tires were installed, the wheels were rotated to ensure they weren't bent, and new motor mounts were installed and the failure continued to occur.this failure had occurred for over 2 years.the dealer and the transmission mechanic were unable to diagnose the vehicle.the abs and brake warning lights illuminated each time the engine was turned on and stayed on for a 1/4 of a mile.this failureoccurred for more than one year. The dealer stated that the failure was due to the abs pump.the current and failure mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country.the contact stated that the vehicle fails to start sometimes and has been towed twice.while the engine is running, the gauges will go to zero and the instrument panel lights dim.when idling, the vehicle will shut off and several warning indicator lights will illuminate.the mechanic and the dealer were unable to determine the cause of failure.the current mileage is 121,000 and failure mileage was 119,900.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. While driving in rainy weather conditions approximately 40 mph, there was a loss of power steering without warning and the illumination of the battery warning indicator. The contact drove to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. Upon inspecting the vehicle she noticed the serpentine belt detached which was reconnected. The vehicle resumed normally and was taken to an independent mechanic where the serpentine belt, tensioner pulley and idler pulley were replaced. The alternator and water pump were replaced at different times because the technician assumed the components contributed to the malfunction; however the problem continued after the repairs. The faulty serpentine belt caused the failure and would occur whenever driving in the rain. The serpentine belt had been replaced four different times. The manufacturer was made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 142,000.

Engine spontaneously started on fire and fire destroyed the entire vehicle. Owner just purchased the vehicle 1 week prior to this occurring from a dealership. All of a sudden, there was smoke everywhere while driving on the interstate, and within 3-4 minutes of pulling to the side of the road due to smoke occurring, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. The owner is 9 months pregnant, and there were 3 young children also in the vehicle when this occurred. Fire fighters told the owners that if they had continued to drive the vehicle another 100 feet, the vehicle would have blown up with all occupants still inside. The vehicle/all engine parts are completely destroyed. The pregnant owner suffered severe smoke inhalation and barely escaped fetal death due to severe smoke inhalation.

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country.the contact stated that one year ago upon starting his vehicle he noticed that it would start and then it would shut off.the alarm system on the vehicle armed itself when the ignition was turned off and the vehicle would not start until it was reset. The contactstated that the reset option failed to function. A diagnostic test was being performed by a chrysler dealer for repairs. The dealer informed the contact that the body control module needed to be replaced at the owners expense for approximately $1100.00. The owner stated that chrysler was aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000. The current mileage was 156,000.

When going through average size puddle, serpentine belt came off.this disables all steering control and alternator/coolant system, etc.this is definitely a safety issue.have replaced belt myself numerous times.failure of tensioner and 2 other pulleys eventually needed at cost of $300+.waiting for it to happen again...i see this is an ongoing problem.

I have a 1998 chrysler town & country van.the fan belt slipped off during a rain storm, stranding me and my two small children.i was told by the auto mechanic that it is a common problem with the chrysler town & country models 1996-2000.i had to buy a "gates" fan belt kitto fix the problem.two years later and six kits later the fan belt is still giving me problems.chrysler should fix this known defect.

At 25-30 mph engine began to sputter. Dealer determined that camshaft had broken. Part is on national backorder.

First problem occurred three days after we purchased this used. Transmission locked into neutral and would not disengage. This happened while driving. Vehicle had to be towed. Rebuilt transmission cost $1500.got it back and 4 days later the fan to cool the engine went out. In the shop another 2 days costing an additional $180.00.feel like i am hemmorhaging money on this car. Left drivers window switch doesn't work at times and window gets stuck in the open position.

When consumer puts vehicle in park and turns vehicle off with emergency brake on, the emergency brake releases by itself, this could be dangerous because the vehicle could roll.. Consumer stated the belt tensioner and water pump was also replaced.*jg

The serpentine belt comes off when driving through minimal amounts of water causing power loss to the steering as well as overheating. This is a serious safety risk which deserves a recall by chrysler.i have lost steering while driving on 50 mph roads with my children in the vehicle.several times my children and i have been stranded due to the serpentine belt falling off causing me to lose steering and my vehicle to overheat and had to walk down roads with my children to find help.after researching this on-line it appears that this is due to due to an engineering miscalculation of the pulley system.

Driving on highway, temperature warning light illuminated.temperature gauge indicated h (hot) position.stopped vehicle on side of highway and inspected coolant.no coolant in system.added coolant, drove 3 miles, repeated.had towed to private garage.mechanic replaced coolant lines to rear heat at a cost of $321.mechanic stated that lines were rotted throughout. Stated that every t&c he sees with rear heat has coolant line failure such as this.states they are of inferior quality, cheap aluminum with no protection. Cannot guarantee they will not fail again.

When driving overpuddles after a rain storm tension belt comes off the pulley, causing loss of vehicle control. Also, lost power and vehicle overheated. Dealer replacedbelt andtensioner, but defect still occurs.

The car was brought to david ellis for a brake repair on 8/21/00. The car made a noise while driving and a loud noise when braking. Also the pedal did not feel right. They replaced the front pads, rotors, wheel cylinders and the master cylinder. They had to repalce the master cylinder twice while they had it under repair. The morning after i picked up the car, it wouldn't accelerate, it was revving very loud and with very high rpms and then it began to smoke and smell. When i got out of the car i observed flames shooting out of the front wheel. Chrysler has inspected and says they do not know the cause of the fire. They are willing to fix the fire damage but they cannot "fix" the cause of the fire because they do not know what the cause is. I do not feel the car is safe to drive unless they can pinpoint the cause and have it repaired or replaced. They are also refusing to return the parts to me, and i have told them that i need to have them inspected for future litigation. They claim that they will be sending them to chrysler, who has also refused to return them to me.

While driving in rain or snow or over any type of puddle the serpentine belt slipped off.dealer stated there was nothing they could do.

Serpentine belt/pulley defectivebelt is guaranteed to slip offvan) during wet weather conditions, resulting in aloss of power steering.belt and pulley have both been replaced ,but still could nnot drive in rain due to belt coming off.this problem will cause you loss of steering, possible engine overheating andleaves you and your passengers stranded on the road.i wouldn't attemp to drive in snow or sleet, especially with loss of power sterring.

Vehicle experienced a problem with the driving belt. Owner was driving and came to a stop sign, applied the brakes, and the vehicle shut down. Driving belt broke , causing complete loss ofcontrolof the vehicle. Owner contacted the dealer and the manufacturer, and received no assistance from either.

When driving through standing water serpentine belt fell off, causing vehicle to lose power steering and overheat.

Serpentine belt pops off every time it rains.

While driving 35 mph vehicle stalled.consumer tried to restart vehiclebut was unable to do so. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced the serpentine belt, and placed a shield around it to prevent it from falling off.

The serpentine belt was replaced 4 times, which continued to fall off, when the vehicle was wet.

While driving in the rain serpetine belt fell off, which may have caused a loss of vehicle control.dealer said it was a common problem, but could not determine thecause. Please provide further information.

Whiledriving in wet conditionstheserpentine belt fell off, causing an inability to steer.vehicle was towed , and belt was replaced again, the 4th time this year!.vehicle is a 1998 chrysler town & country with a 3.8l engine.

The serpentine belt broke 2 times in 2 weeks - a critical component.it happened at 30000.

Three times in one year and twice in one week the serpentine belt came off.seems to be worse in wet weather.the last time it happened my daughter was driving with her 4 children in the car at 65 mph on the interstate in rush-hour traffic. When the belt comes off you lose, among other items, the power steering. This is a dangerous situation.my dealer found the service bulletin addressing the problem (only after i told him the tsb number) but would not show it to me. A call to chrysler customer service only got me an offer to sell me the service bulletin.i have since found out the service bulletin calls for replacement an incorrectly designed idler pulley bracket.i believe this is a critical safety issue, made worse by the manufacturers unwillingness to share its knowledge of the problem with the customer.

Serpentine belt throws in even slightly wet weather, often at hazardous places and conditions.belts and pulleys have been replaced repeatedly.power steering and water pump, among other systems fail instantly.my wife drives the car and can no longer drive it in wet weather.been fighting this problem for years.

Serpentine belt would always come off when vehicle goes through puddles or whenroad is wet. Had takenvehicle to dealership, and mechanic replacedbeltandpulley. This iswas7th time it has happened.

While driving, the serpentine belt had come off the pulleys, the power steering, air condition (compressor), defroster and alternator had gone out.it was difficult to steer and the windows fogged.the dealer replaced the tensioner and serpentine drive belt.(the serpentine belt had come off during a rain storm and the tensioner was worn out) *scc

Rattling noise in engine, sounds like a bike chain, its louder when the a/c onand when van is in park or drive. Have had clutch , air coil hub a/c replaced, belt drive, tensionerreplace 3 times

I have had two incidents where the engine's serpentine belt has come off the pulleys. When this occurs, the vehicle loses all power options and becomes difficult to control. In addition the vehicle can be driven only a few miles without overheating. I belive that since the manufacturer is aware of this problem, they should reimburse owners who have been forced to correct this situation. They should also be proactive about correcting those vehicles that still represent a liability to their owners. This is ultimately a safety issue to prevent loss of vehicle control and becoming stranded along the highway.

While driving the vehicle shut down without any warning. Consumer was unable to steer. Contacted dealer.metal in serpentine belt tensioner was defective, causing the belt which was attached to slip off.*jg

My chrysler town and country had a belt alignment problem.if the belt gets wet, it slips off the pulleys or breaks/shreads.i had to have it repaired by placing a spacer plate between a pully and the motor and a new belt tensioner.when the problem occurs, the van is very hard to stear due to loss of power steering.i researched the www, and this has been a problem for many people.

1998 chrysler town and country transmission failed while driving on the highway.there was no warning prior to the failure.the vehicle was towed to the service dealer who indicated that the vehicle needed a new transmission.the consumer contacted the manufacturer for financial assistance but since the vehicle was out of warranty they refused any assistance.the belt and tensioner were replaced because they were noisy.the handbrake did not hold.the dealer replaced the lever and cable assembly.the front struts were replaced.the sway bar link was replaced because it was noisy.the rear hatch lock was inoperative.

Dt: the contact complained about aserpentine belt problem.she replaced the belt three times. This has been an ongoing problem for the past three years. The first problem emerged whenthe belt broke while driving. The power steering was lost when the breakage occurred.the next two times the belt itself did not break, it came off the pulley. The vehicle has been taken back to the dealer for repairs all three times.

Serpentinebelt broke, resulting in loss of vehicle control. Dealer and manufacturer has been contacted.

The contacts owns a 1998 chrysler town and country.the contact stated that she has replaced the serpentine belt three times.she further stated that the idler pulley was defective and had to be replaced with a kit.when the pulley malfunctions, it allows the serpentine belt to detach.as a result, the power steering fails and all the other components overheat.while driving at various speeds, the contact cannot pull off the road.the vehicle may explode or catch fire.the failure was initially noticed while driving 35 mph in the rain.the vehicle was towed to her mechanic for repair.there were no warning indicators prior to the failure.the failure mileage was 120,000.

The driver is smelling gas inside vehicle after vehicle has been started. The cause of the smell is unknown.

Consumer states the engine developed a leak in the connection between the rear cylinder head and its exhaust manifold shortly after the warranty expired and there is also a noise.dealer advised that heat had warped the original exhaust manifold and that the noise was due to the exhaust leaking.the rear exhaust manifold was replaced.

I own a 1998 chrysler town and country minivan and i was getting real sleepy every time i drove it . Upon inspection by an auto repair shop. I was informed the expansion joint on the exhaust pipe crossover pipe was cracked and letting fumes enter the passenger compartment. This is a very dangerous situation. The repair part is over $500 which the mechanic said was very much overpriced. This expansion joint is made of stainless steel which gets very brittle with heat and will crack over time with extended use. The part was used on chrysler town & country and voyager minivans. I feel due to the seriousness of this defect, these vans should be recalled and repaired without cost to the vehicle owners.

Failure of the flex joint in the rear exhaust manifold on the 3.8 liter v6 engine. Causing exhaust noise under the hood and exhaust entering the cabin area when the heater is in use.

Consumer states the head lights is foging up causing low visability. Please provide any additional information. Ph

Headlights have progressively been getting more etched or fogged, considerably reducing visibility.high beam light intensity is less than my other cars' low beam intensity.this is a safety hazard because of reduced visibility at night.it appears the durability of the plastic surface is not sufficient to withstand routine exposure to weather.no accident to date.

The headlights on my 1998 chrysler, town & country are frosted over due to exposure to the elements and are becoming more opaque with time.the headlight quality and quantity is diminishing and making it difficult to see while driving at night.this is a cause for concern for night driving safety.the headlights are an assembly and not made up of replaceable components.each headlight assembly costs near $300.00i feel this is a design and manufacturers defect that should be addressed by the auto manufacturer with a free replacement.

The problem persisted so i called the dealer again and was told that the location of the gas leak was in the location where the recall was supposed to be fixed. I was asked to bring the vehicle into the dealer. After driving the vehicle to the dealer i was told that i would have to be responsible for a $96.00 checkout fee. I called chrysler and was told that "the dealers had to eat to and they deserved the checkout fee". First transmission problem was on a secondary road, had to turn around and when i went to back up would not go in reverse or forward.had to be towed.again having a problem with the transmission on august 23, 2003.it is jerking when i go into reverse or forward.will have to be towed to garage. Last december was coming of an exit and bolt broke off from steering that goes into the transmission

The vibrates is in the transmission

Design of the transmission does not contain shift interlock system, which has resulted in child moving gear and vehicle rolling.

When we tried to back the vehicle out of our garage, we discovered that it would not engage reverse gear.we pushed the vehicle out of the garage to the street and found that it still had all forward gears.we took the vehicle to tuttle-click chrysler in irvine.we were told that a differential gear had failed.it seems to us that this would prevent the vehicle from moving in either direction, so a broken differential gear probably was not the reason we couldn't use reverse gear.however, we still needed reverse, so the dealer replaced the transmission.within the two weeks preceding the transmission failure, the windshield wipers began to operate spontaneously and the ignition lock became very difficult to operate.during the same visit that the transmission was replaced, the dealer replaced the body control module, a computer within the vehicle, to fix the wiper problem and replaced and rekeyed the ignition lock.we believe that all three of these failures were the result of faulty design or shoddy workmanship and asked chrysler to reimburse us and to explain why the components failed.chrysler has done neither.we believe that we should not be required to indemnify chrysler for its mistakes.

While driving on route 206 in new jersey (speed limit 50), i had slowed for a turning vechile.when i went to accelerate, the car would not go more than 30 miles per hour.i traveled on the shoulder of the road until i got it to a service station.the mechanic told me the overdrive was shot.the car had just traveled 80 miles on the parkway and interstate without any sign of trouble.i called chrsyler.although my warantee had expired, due to the age of my car they offered to supply the parts and i paid the labor for repair.i paid roxbury chrsyler $1020 in labor for the repair.three days later while on interstate 80, the same thing happened!i don't know how i managed to get off the road without injury.i took the car back, they said it was an unknown code.chrsyler told the mechanic to reset and return the car.even the mechanic was hesitant to give me the car.he drove it for two days, nothing happened.previous to this my husband and i had decided to sell the car to reduce our debt.how can i sell this car to anyone like this.chrysler's mike sarachman claims he will not allow the 12m/12,000k warantee they are giving me to be transferred to a new owner.i need to sell my car and i can't.i am afraid to drive this vehicle. Please offer some advice on how i can proceed.mr. Sarachman claims i cannot speak with anyone above him at chrysler corp.he refused to give me any other name or number to call.

On monday, july 26, 2004, while on a mini-vacation with my family in covington, kentukcy, without warning the transmission failed on our 1998 chrysler town & country xli, which is well kept and has only 63,000 miles.this transmission failure placed my family in danger in a strange city, and required towing to the local dealer and rental of a vehicle to return home to louisville, kentucky, over 100 miles away.marshall dodge dealership in covington determined that the transmission required replacement and offer to conduct such replacement for nearly $2,500.upon further investigation and inquiry, we had the vehicle towed to mr. Transmission to replace the transmission.representatives at mr. Transmission notified us that this was not an isolated incident, and explained that there is a defective pin in the transmission which commonly works its way out of the housing unit on this vehicle, and destroys the transmission.we replaced the transmission in our vehicle with 63,000 miles at a cost of $1,848.00, plus vehicle rental charges and dealer fees to determine the problem (an additional $169.00). I intend to write chrysler and invite you to contact the manufacturer to contact me.thank you.

Re:1998 chrysler town and countrymileage:75,000complete brake failure - pedal all the way to the floor - unsafe to drive.towed to the dealer - diagnosis : corroded rear brake line.being repaired now - will ask for old part to be saved.brake lines should last for life of vehicle.dealer/manufacturer should be responsible for this faulty defective brake line. Nhtsa should required chrysler to notify all owners of the possibility of complete brake failure.i have read of many other occurrences with the brake lines on this car.it has been suggested that the problem arises as a result of bi-metal reaction where stainless steel and steel lines are welded together.this vehicle was at the dealer for other work just five months prior and i was not notified that the brake lines were in danger!

In panic stops abs braking system failed, resulting in extended stopping distance which caused an accident.been to dealer before the accident, but could not determine the problem nor did they fixthe problem.please provide further information.

Abs brake problems; while driving at 15 mph andapplying the brakes, no inclement weather, normal driving conditions, quicker stops than normal. Plenty of room to brake, there was total brake failure and the vehicle did not stop, causing a rear end crash. The dealer was not able to find a problem with the vehicle.

Rakeshad failed 4 times when in use. Always happening when slowing down to stop light or stop sign. Vehicle would increase its stopping distance. Been to dealership for repairs. After repairs, the problem would return. Brake stopping is an intermittent problem. There would be no warning. Can seems to be resolved.

When applyingbrakes under normal conditions, no inclement weather, brake pedal went down the floor andvan did not stop. While driving applied brakes vehicle would not stop an d rearended another vehicle. Brakes failed without warning. Dealercontacted.

Sudden premature failure of both rear service brake hydraulic lines resulted in loss of all brake fluid in a very short time (minutes from first illumination of brake warning light).failure was due to corrosion from dissimilar metals at the junction of the flexible braided brake line to the rigid brake line for both rear brake systems.

The town & country (t&c) minivan does not have a stearing wheel gear shift lock to prevent children from accidently shifting gears.you don't need to step on the brake to shift out of park in the town & country van.how did the safety commission allow chrysler to get away with this?do we need to have an accident or have a child killed in one of these vans for the gov. To require chrysler to install a safety lock on all of their popular minivans?i asked a dealer about this and they told me that chysler does not have a safety lock on its t&c minivans.this surprised me and the dealer, since many families do buy the t&c minivan.i think that chrysler needs to install this feature in all of its popular vans! all i am asking for is chrysler to install a safety feature that should have already been there in one of its most popular minivan series.

On the date above i tried to have repairs made to keep the alarm system from auto-activating. It did so repeatedly in days prior to the service date. After replacing a hood switch for $123.28,the problem happened again the next morning. Having no faith in the florida dealer who was far from my home in kansas, i removed the fuse disabling my horn and making it possible to not disturb my neighbors while the alarm continued to frequently go on. Only the lights flashed. After my return home a local dealer tried to repair the alarm system finding a door switch to be the problem. When i returned later to complain that the problem was still there and i got ongoing, unexplainable alarm sounds that caused me to have to remove the horn fuse each time, the dealer checked my car and told me the main computer must be replaced at a cost of about $700.00. I asked to have the alarm disconnected and was told if so i would lose the use of my horn. The factory told me that because my warrenty was lapsed by 2 months i had no recourse. They made a one time offer of replacing the computer for almost $300.00 good for 60 days. I only want my horn to operate for safety and it can not!

Our 1998 chrysler town & country minivan has had a recurring problem with the power steering belt falling off when the vehicles drives through standing water (or snow). We have had the vehicle to numerous mechanics and a chrysler dealer in an effort to get this problem fixed. Each of them (including the dealer) has told us that they have seen this problem on other chrysler town & country minivans, but that chrysler has refused to provide any recommended fix. We consider this a dangerous situation which we have put-up with for several years.

The van lost power steering every time it was driven over a puddle of water.

The vehicle, a 1998 chrysler town and country minivan, completely lost all power steering while my wife was driving on a highway.fortunately, my wife was able to exit the highway with the van overheating without damage or injury.as this is the second time that power steering has been lost while driving within the last three months, we understandably are very concerned about whether or not this problem is correctable and if the vehicle can be rendered safe.our mechanic provided me with a service bulletin issued by chrysler which identifies the problem.for vans from the 1995-1999 model years, the serpentine belt can slip off the idler pulley when the van is driven in deep snow or water.unfortunately, the service bulletin gives no indication of what causes this problem.i do not want anyone (either in my family or outside it) to be a fatality as a result of this problem.while my mechanic can do the repairs (like he did the last time), he can give me no assurance that the problem will not occur again.

At highway speedssteering wheel vibrates uncontrollably. Dealer has attempted to repair the vehicle.

I took my van to a mechanic because i am having problems with the steering.every time i hit a bump in the road, the van swerves (jumps) and is difficult to control.the mechanic showed me the strut tower on the driver side, it is so corroded and severe that the metal is perforated and starting to tear almost all the way through.the passenger side is starting to rust.he said if the tower gives way, i would loose total control of the van.if it was not hidden, i would have noticed it long before it got this bad.he said if the design had been done proper and the electro coating done correctly, this defect should not occur before 10 years.i contacted my uncle who found this is not an uncommon problem.information on the chrysler website issuing tsb number 23-044-02 acknowledging this problem for vans built from 1996 to 2000.he also found 14 pages of people with the same problem and the problems they had in finding the replacement parts and the expense they had to endure to have a safe vehicle.i can provide digital photos to you if they are needed.from all the replies that i printed, it seems chrysler is unwilling to face up to their responsibility of putting peoples lives in jeopardy because people do not know what is happening to their vehicles.i am hoping your office looks into this matter so chrysler can take responsibility for this defect and no one puts his or her family in jeopardy as i unknowingly have.this defect is going to cost me money i really do not have, but my children's safety is more important than paying some bills right now.

Strut tower corrosion on driver's side appears to be severe enough to break through and cause handling problems.my fear is that it may break through at highway speeds.it appears there are many incidents like this and that may be chrysler is aware of the problem.

Faulty suspension system is causing the front end of the vehicle to wobble while driving, repairs did not remedy problems.nlm

Van aways pulls to the right when driving. Dealer and manufacturer said no problem found in van.

We are experiencing a wheel wobble.after 3 service visits for this problem we were shown a technical service bulletin from chrysler stating to refer wheel wobble complaints on 1996-1999 town & country vehicles equipped with michelin 215/65r16 to michelin consumer relations.michelin stated they would replace the tires on a pro-rated basis.neither michelin nor chrysler will take credit for the problem.we are expected to pay for tires on a pro-rated basis, up to 60% of replacement cost.i have read of several tire explosions on this vehicle.i want to know why i wasn't told of this problem the first time this vechicle was brought in for service.i don't believe this is a consumer problem, but one chrysler and michelin have known about for years and are passing the cost on to the consumer.i want tires replaced with a guarantee this will not happen again.i am afraid to drive my vehicle at high speeds.i have written to chrysler corporation regarding this problem.this should be made public.( dot number: m30d tire size: 215/65r.16 )

When driving vehicle at low speeds, it would wobble. Been to dealer & was informed the tires needed changing. The tire co. Claimed manufacturer at fault due to axle problem on vehicle. At speeds, no wobbling. The problem is getting worse. Each manufacturer blaming the other.

Thankfully they haven't failed yet, but the strut towers are rusted very badly.much more rust through would inevitably lead to complete structural failure of the strut tower (which would likely lead to loss of vehicle control and serious personal injury).daimler chrysler needs to recall these faulty strut tower mounts due to their lack of proper rust protection as they can lead to a major problem (and liability suit).

The contact owns a 1998 chrysler town and country. The vehicle was parked when he noticed there was surface rust on the front drivers side strut. Over time the rust became progressively worse. He took the vehicle to an independent repair shop where they confirmed that the front drivers side strut was rusting throughout the struts.the vehicle was repaired at a cost of $ 300.00.the failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 220,000. Spare tire fell from vehicle while driving. Since then, i have noted other chrysler products that have spare tied in place with rope. I therefore think that i am not unique. Event occured at end of driveway. If on highway, could have been very dangerous.
