There is apparently a common short in the steering column of these vehicles and the functions in the steering column stop working.of particular concern is the horn and air bag.seems to me that this is a design defect and a safety problem that the manufacturer should take responsibility for ...
Horn/cruise control worked intermittently, then failed.i now understand the air bags were on that circuit as well, but i had no way of checking that at the time, and the garage did not give me any indication that this failure was dangerous.please force them to fix these things on other chrysler mini-vans beofre someone gets seriously hurt.
I first notice just my airbag light came on, then my noticed my horn wasn't working, and checked my cruise control also out.when we contacted the dealer (chris in service) he knew exactly what it was and rattled off what needed to be replaced on the spot (sight unseen).we find this to be highly unusual as we have dealt with this dealership for years and years.we read that you were investigating this same problem today via wallstreet journal and decided to let you all know we had the same problem you were investigating.contact us if needed... Feel free.we appreciate the job you do!!

My 'air bag' light flickered for a month and then finally stayed on.i discovered my horn did not work, or the cruise control.i replaced the fuses, and the problem continued.i contacted my repair shop and was told other minivans had the same proble.he referred me to the dealer.the dealer was well aware of the problem and told me it was the "clockswitch".it would cost approximately $250 to repair.he informed me that my air bag does not work, in addition to the cruise control and horn.i researched the web and found many others have the same problem.i contacted chrysler, they claim it is not a defect and not a reall.this should be a recall since over 124,511 of these parts have been replaced, at the owner's expense, and who knows how many vehicles are out there where the operators are unaware their air bag will not deploy.this is a sfety issue!!!!!!please investigate!!!

1.steering system locked up while making turns making control of vehicle difficult.van also made screeching noises while turning.was told rack and pinion needed replacing per "service bulletin".it was, but did not solve problem.dealer recommendeddrive belt and tensioner be replaced.this finally helped.2.air bag light and abs lights came on, and traction control went off at hwy speeds. Air bag light remained on constantly.dealer says that both air bag clock spring and abs controler must be replaced.dealer stated that if these controlers were not replaced, neither the air bags, the horn, the cruise control nor the abs braking system would work.please reopen nhtsa action investigation #ea01007for the air bag clock spring in this vehicle.it is important for people to know that if their air bag light won't go off it means that the system is not operational!
This defect effects air bag and horn at the same time. This is a safety issue. We can not count on the air bag to work nor the horn to function in an emergency. I think its quite unusual that both are not functioning. Thank you for your concern and attention.ph *nlm**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**765869

The horn often does not honk when the center of the steering wheel is pushed.several times, i have tried to honk and was unable to.one has to push hard and then "search" for the spot that will make the horn honk.this is a serious problem for me, but chrysler has not helped me.
The courtesy light in the door burned out.nlm consumer states while his wife was driving vehicle the steering wheel suddenly became extremly difficult to turn, consumer was told that the vehicle needed new struts and a new rack an pinion, also the windshield wopers come on by themselves and the air bag light on the dashboard stays on.
The airbag warning light came on in june.i contacted the dealer and was told that it was the clockspring without them even looking at it.they also told me that my cruise control and horn would fail next.sure enough, about a week later the cruise control and horn ceased to function.i have a friend with a 1997 caravan with the same problem.if the dealer knew what was wrong with it sight unseen, that indicates that this is a common problem. I see that there is an open investigation (nhtsa action#ea01007) into this very problem, and i hope that it results in a recall soon.the dealer wants almost $300.00 to fix it.
Loss of control of cruse control. Horn did not work ( on indication prior).
Airbag light is coming on and staying on.cruise control doesn't work, and horn won't blow.
The evaporator heater coiland expansion valve malfunctioned.prior to this, the air conditioner was not cooling the van.thishappened since january2002.the consumer was told by the manufacturerthere was no recall on the above parts.the battery had been replaced on four occasions, the rear brake drums, the serpentine belt and tensioner had been replaced.*sccalso the horn, driver seat rack and grill were replaced.
Cruise control went out, and then airbag light came on. Also, horn would not work.
Horn is not working. Took vehicle to dealer to check onhorn, and found thatclock spring was broken. Also, air bagswere norworking.this is a safety hazard, and consumer should be notified of this .
Airbag light came on, horn and cruise control stopped working, tookto dealer, clock spring assembly had to be replaced. The consumer states that were 2.8 million other owners with the same problem and withthe same kind of vehicle.the consumer also indicates thatdriving this vehicle was extremely dangerous.
About 2 weeks agoair bag light came on after starting vehicle.air bag light remained on. Also, hornand cruise control failed to function properly when in use.

Bundle of wire under hood fell due to not being clamped, serpentine belt wore through casing on wire bundle, splitting cam sensor wire.
As we were driving down the expressway one day the gauges all froze for about 3 days and from that moment on the locks lock and unlock while the car is in motion, it is a continuous thing every time we get in the vehicle. My wife was driving oneday and the doors unlocked on her and the driver door slung open , the only way that i have been able to deal with this is by driving with the door not fully closed so that it will stop locking and unlocking, but that only lasts for so longthen it does it at times when the door is not fully closed as well.this has got to be some kind of a manufacturers thing because my horn is not working either and it all has to do with my drivers side door.if there is some type of recall or answer please inform me in a hurry, this is a dangerous problem that really needs to be rectified.
The contact owns a 1997 chrysler town and country. After starting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the instrument panel no longer functioned. The failure continued to occur. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 163,000. The current mileage was approximately 164,000.updated 9/1/10 the consumer stated the problem was due to a bad connection at the end of the wiring harness. Updated 09/14/10
Electrical wiring failure caused vehicle fire.
Fire while driving, brakes, power steering completely failed.
While pulling vehicle in parking garage saw smoke coming from under the hood. Consumer raisedhood and vehicle was on fire. There was no warning.contacted dealer, and dealerurged consumer to contact insurance company.
Windshield wipers have self-actuated over 100 times while driving.i have taken the car back to dealer (galeana) seven (7) times and they cannot fix the problem.i consider this a safety problem because there is some kind of "short circuit" in the electrical system that could cause a fire and we may be trapped in the car.it is startling to the driver to have the wipers come on suddenly while you are driving at highway speeds and could cause the driver to lose control of the car.
Vehicle started smoking after an hour parked in garage. Consumer was able to move vehicle out of garage, smoke decreased after vehicle was outside. Dealer notified, and found the cause in the electrical harness under the hood. Repair made at no cost to the consumer.
There is apparently a common short in the steering column of these vehicles and the functions in the steering column stop working.of particular concern is the horn and air bag.seems to me that this is a design defect and a safety problem that the manufacturer should take responsibility for ...
While the wife of the comsumer was driving the vehicle about 45 mph.the dashboard electrical powerwent off, air conditioner and engine still running;dealer will start working on vehicle tuesday july 8, 1997.
Instrument panel cluster module was replaced at 64,000 miles. Problem has reoccurred, and cluster needs to be replaced again. Dealer notified.
Consumer experiencing problems with the instrument clsuter module gauges and overhead computer malfunctioning. Also service engine soon light is illuminated. Dealer suspected an electrical problem and stated that battery needed to be replaced, consumer refused repairs, consumer believes the problem that other chrysler vehicle are having, he is experiencing the same problem, the manufacturer recalled 2 chrysler vehicles and consumer believes that other models should be included as well.

While turning/braking vehicle stalled andlost power.the consumer managed to pull over.
I have 1997 dodge town and country van and every time it rains the serpentine belt pops off.dodge told me that this is a known problem and there is no sure way of resolving it.this is very dangerous because there is no power steering once the belts pops off.
When driving, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle has been to the dealer on six occasions.
While drivingheard a strange noise, andtemperature gauge wentto hot, andlost all power. Consumer managed to get toside ofroad. Consumer felt thatonhighway there may have been an accident.dealer has put fourbelts on vehicle, andproblem still remained. Consumer states each time belt fails that brakes fail and steering is hard, consumer was told by 2 mechanics that this year and model vehicle is noted for this problem.
Somewhere between 82,000 & 86,000 miles, my engine began making a ticking sound.since i was duefor an oil change, i took the van in to a nearby shop for an oil change.the first thing the mechanic called me about was an oil leak...he thought the head gasket was blown and was calling for my authorization.when he removed the valve cover, he called back to inform me that i had a broken head.somehow, one of the stanchions that holds the rocker arm assembly had broken off and the rocker arm next to that stanchion was loose and causing the clicking sound.neither he nor i had never heard of that type of part failure and i went to the shop to see what he had found.the stanchion was broken through about 1/4 inch below the rocker arm.in my mind, since a head is a solid block of cast aluminum, this was not a part that should wear out or have to be replaced.the engine had never overheated, et cetera. In quoting the repair estimate, the mechanic informed me that since the head was broken, in addition to the cost of purchasing a reconditioned head, i would also have to pay a $200.00 core charge since mybroken head could not be exchanged and reconditioned.to my way of thinking, since the head shouldn't have broken in such a manner anyway, the core charge was unfair.my belief was that this is either a casting or design flaw and regardless of the fact that i was 16,000 milesover the warranty, this type of breakage should not have happened.i then went to the dodge dealership service department to see if chrysler corp. Was helping consumers with this type of problem.he then put me in touch with the service manager.i learned a few more things from the service manager. First, since my vehicle was out of warranty, he was certain that chrysler would not help in any way with the repairs.when they recondition the heads, they now insert a shaft through the stanchions to provide additional strength to prevent these breaks.
The contact owns a 1997 chrysler town and country. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph in rainy weather when the steering wheel became abnormally stiff and difficult to turn. The defroster also failed and the contact experienced an increase in stopping distance when applying the brakes. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed that the serpentine belt was detached. The contact reattached the serpentine belt and continued driving. The failure recurred 3 times and only when driving in rainy weather. After each failure, the contact would reattach the serpentine belt himself. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or the vehicle repaired. The failure mileage was 185,000 and the current mileage was 187,000.
Water pump is leaking. Yh
From27,928 mile up to the present had four serpentine belts replaced & repaired by various independent repair shops, but, problem still appears to be reoccurring, dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time. Discharge line leaking from compressor to condensor causing ac not to work. Water pump failed.windshield wiper switch shorted and was replaced.exterior power mirrors shook while driving, dealer replaced switch.transmission hard to downshift to first gear on slight downgrades, dealer made no repairs.
Windshield wipers will not operate in cool damp weather (25-45 degrees f with high humidity). They cannot be controlled- sometimes operating for 10 minutes without being able to turn them off, sometimes they go into delay mode by themselves, and sometimes will not even turn on. This has been going on since we bought the vehicle in 2002. The same problem occured with our 1997 dodge intrepid es which we sold in 2002 due to it being an electrical nightmare, a lemon from the factory. Though purchased new, the dealer would not make any effort to having the car replaced though we suffered through 3 years of warranty "repairs" for the same problem. Anyway, i digress...

Van engine dies at any time without any sputtering or warning, like someone turned off the ignition. Will start right up again as soon as i put transmission in neutral and turn key. Often when driving the engine will jerk real hard like i just drove over a speed bump, but engine does not kill. The engine light flashes for a second. Dealer says nothing shows on computer so theres nothing he can do. Chrysler in detroit was called and said the same thing. They were no help at all.i have almost been hit from behind several times due to this problem. I see others have had the same problem posted also. Happens about once every two weeks or so. It seems if the dealers computer doesn't give them a code they are lost and can't do anything to help. It's a very frustrating and dangerous situation to be in!

Last december 2004 while driving, my steering wheel locked up and i was unable to make a turn.i looked under hood and found s belt had slipped off.i was able to have it fixed.i do not know what caused this.today 5/9, again, the belt came off as my sister was about to go down an incline.should she have been in the process of descending, she would have had an accident, because of a sharp turn in the road. At the repair shop i was told that there is a problem that exist with the tensioner in this vehicle, and that it slips off when it rains or if water gets into it.in order to put the vehicle in use i've had to have it repaired.from the complaints i've read, this should be made into a recall issue, and those who've had to make repairs and replace belts, should be reimbursed by the manufacturer.

When your serpentine belt breaks, is replaced because of damage or wear or just falls off the pulleys when you go through water puddles... Then you must replace the belt tensioner as well as the belt to reduce future problems... I have a 1997 t & c and have just recently replaced the belt tensioner of the 2nd time... Not hard or expensive.... Must do about every 3 to 4 years... The tensioners wears out.
While drivingserpentine belt came off. As a result, power steering assist malfunctioned.serpentine beltwas replaced five times, however, problem still exists.
While driving in the rain, not standing water or high water, my 97 chrysler town and country started overheating. Not knowing what was wrong, i pulled over and let it cool off and attempted to restart my trip. This continued every 1/2 mile and finally i had no power steering. Trying to get to a filling station, it finally just died. After having it towed, staying in a hotel and taking a cab to work, the mechanic told me my serpentine belt just came off. He replaced it. He stated that this has been known to be happening with these vans and for additional money and labor costs i could have a "kit"installed and will hopefully prevent this problem from continually happening. The kit he spoke about was a belt that is ribbed on both sides and replacement of a pulley.if this is a known problem then chrysler should recall and replace this free of charge.
Nar 06/19/2003.*mrsoon after the consumer purchased the vehicle he noticed the parking brake did not work. The vehicleh had a flat tire before entering the interstate.the car was taken to the service dealer tohave the brakes repaired, but it was evident that the parking brake was defective.along with the parking brakes several other problems existed with the vehicle.a belt tensioner and tune up was needed.there were tworecalls were issued for the fuel rails and clocks springs. However the dealership failed to recognize other malfunctions like the parking brakes in which the consumer felt a recall needed to be issued.please investigate and give prompt response. The consumer was told the reason the parking nrake did not work was because the vehicle needed disc pads, brake shoes rotors and drums because they were glazed and could not be resurfaced. The fuel injector and throttle body needed to cleaned.

A tall beverage glass was placed in the cup holder of the van. Since the air conditioning on/off button is positioned in line with the cup holder, the button was unknowingly pressed and the air conditioning compressor was disabled which caused the van to become excessively hot and the person inside suffered a heat stroke. This is a blatant design flaw!!!!!

The plastic lens covering the headlights on my 1997 chrysler town and country has become clouded [opaque] over the past two years and continues to become more so as time passes.this greatly reduces the amount of light that the headlights put out and therefore makes driving at night hazardous.my local chrysler dealer wants greater than $600 to replace these and told me this was not covered under my extended warranty [still in effect].my seach at local salvage yards for the part was unsuccessful because,i was told, these chrysler plastic lenses all tend to get cloudy[opaque]as they age.therefore if there are a lot of these clouded headlight lenses out there,it sure makes night driving unsafe for us chrysler owners and all others using the highways at night.and as the replacement part is so expesive, many may not replace it.
Hi beams are not bright enough.
Headlights are very dim, even high beams are not bright.dealer has no answer. *mjs
The plastic headlamp covers on my chrysler minivan have become fogged or hazed or otherwise become cloudy and will not allow light transmission required for safe nighttime drivingmany cars have this problem, and the manufacturer builds the headlamp unit as a single assembly costing $400 to $500 for each light to replace the clouded plastic.
The headlight lenses on my 1997 chrysler town & country have become hazy and somewhat opaque, greatly reducing vision at night.the hazing seems to be internal to the plastic headlight lens and due to tiny cracks.i have never used abrasive cleaners on the lenses.this hazing has occurred gradually over the years and is due, i believe, to the selection of a poor manufacturing material, (some sort of plastic).my headlights have become so dim that it is probably not really safe to drive the van at night.i am looking into replacing the lenses but they are fairly expensive.i also have a '97 chrysler cirrus that has the same type headlight lens and it is showing signs of the same problem, just not to as great a degree as the town & country.
The headlight acrylic covers have become so clouded that the lights are so dim that the highway is unsafely illuminated during night driving.switching between high and low beams doesn't make much of a difference.these are original chrysler installed assemblies, and should certainly last longer than 7 years.its like trying to look through a windshield that has become less and less transparent.the problem is not with the replaceable lamps, but with the head light assemblies in which they are mounted.chrysler should replace these without cost to the customer.
Driver is not able to see the road clearly because of the headlights. The headlights are too dim in areas where there are no street lights. The problem has been reported to the manufacturer.
The clear plastic lenses on the front of my headlight assemblies were defectively designed as the plastic is especially prone to damage by uv light, heat, cold, &/or road chemicals.the plastic after a few years has come to be fogged or hazed or cloudy looking... And upon close inspection also has thousands of tiny cracks throughout each lens. Our vehicle is a 1997 chrysler t&c which we purchased in 2000. By 2002 we noticed the headlights at night were getting dimmer and it got progressively worse until about 2004 when i bought brighter bulbs to try to compensate for this.it did not help at all.the damaged lenses causes severe diffraction of the light coming from the bulbs creating essentially a pair of very bright "night lights" on the front of the car.by 2005 vision was limited to 25-50 feet at night depending on weather conditions.this made night time driving extremely dangerous and so we stopped driving it at night at highway speeds.in late 2005, after checkingthe cost of having them replaced and finding that it would be $400-500 per light,i decided to replace them myself.at local auto parts stores the part alone is $219-255.88 each plus tax.i then searched the internet where i found and bought them from www.yourautopartstore.com.the sku numbers are hl 3163 and hl 3164 and the total was $221.24 including shipping for the pair.i installed and aligned them myself.it is my feeling that this crucial part should never deteriorate with time, and that the cost of replacement should be borne by the manufacturer for designing these defective, and expensive to replace parts.
Plastic lens covering the headlights on my 1997 chrysler town & country has become clouded over the past two years and continues to become more so as time passes.this greatly reduces the amount of light that the headlights put out and therefore makes driving at night hazardous .i was told by my dealer that the replacement of these lens are very expensive, over $500.00.i love my town and country, its great for vacations but i feel that driving it at night is a danger to myself, family, as well as other drivers on the road.
The head lights were very dim, due to the the plastic headlamp housing, which impaired the consumer visibility.

Recently the power locks on our chrysler town and country minivan have begun to malfunction. They lock and unlock without reason, both while we are driving as well as when the car is parked in our driveway. Tonight they locked immediately after i had closed one of the sliding doors after buckling my children in and before i had opened the driver's door, locking my keys inside. Fortunately my husband was also around and was carrying his spare. I believe that this malfunction presents a serious safety hazard.with two small children it is both a challenge and an inconvenience to schedule this sort of repair, but plan to have the repair made as soon as feasible.

Make: chrysler town & country vin:[xxx] all-wheel all the time drive vehicle. Well maintained by the owner at the dealership, the following problems have arisen. It was taken off the road last friday, december 15, 2000. Symptoms: somewhat of a crunching noise when turning left or right. Difficult to steer at low speed. Some thumping heard - progressively faster until vehicle was up to road speed.repair history: dealer maintained vehicle. Dealer had repaired it before and in fact had replacedbolts on the transfer case yet never made any statement about any damage to the transmission.dealer & visual observation reveal:the dealer rep told me that it must be from abuse. We saw the front frame struts - in perfect shape - and the damage is all up above it. The transfer mechanism appears to be eating the case from the inside. The drive shaft was whipping against the body strut and actually "carving" through it just by the rotations. Transfer case, which is metal, had shattered from bolt to bolt on all visible sides.the front of the case was sheared to the degree that it was hanging there not doing much of anything - the back of the housing would shift to about a 30 30 degree cant to the rear if the drive shaft was physically lifted by hand (hence the whipping "like a jump rope") and would touch the upper body parts.there was no sign of abuse of any sort or any reason to have this happen during normal wear. This surely could have caused a very serious accident.the entire trans-axle housing was shattered on all visible sides and the bolts had sheared allowing the drive train to bounce against the chassis housing. Two bolts were found on the front cross-struts, most bolts were missing several in a backed-out position. Left tie rod ws very loose. The floor manager looked at andsaid that this sort of thing should never happen and again agreed that there was probably some internal problem in the drive that was causing the housing to disintegrate. Purchased vehicle with 52,037 miles. At 65,000 miles took vehicle in for routine transmission service at local chrysler dealer for fluid and filter change. Service technician advised metal debris noted in transmission fluid pan, keep an eye on it. At 78,350 miles with no prior drivability problems, trans became difficult to engage any drive gear, accompanied by loud gear noise- no malfunction lights illuminated. At repair facility, was told fluid pan full of metal; final drive mechanism destroyed. Routine locally driven only, no abuse. Shop changed trans with factory reman. Unit at cost of $2,780.00; 3/36 warranty. Local dealer suggested contacting chrysler hq., no warrantee or compensation applicable. Felt this warrented some compensation, many similar cases are out there for these minivans. Contacted wa. St. Atty. General's consumer affairs office, receptionist answering call had same experience! no action resulted, vehicle out of warrantee. Now chrysler has 7/70 coverage. Older transmissions are notorious for early failure under normal driving conditions and maintenance. Request inquiry, possible recall action. Failure on the highway may result in drivetrain malfunction and possible injury. Thank you.

My mother was driving a 1997 chrysler town & country mini-van when she stopped to pick up yard sale signs.when she stopped the vehicle and placed it park, she exited the van and started walking towards the rear of the van when it self-shifted into reverse, known as the park-to-reverse defect. Without any warning my transmission failed at 58,587 miles. It was serviced once at about 30,000 miles and the fluid checked regularly.the failure was not my fault.after having it towed to the local chrsyler dealer & waiting 3 days the problem was finally diagnosed as the rear planetary gears had welded themselves together, otherwise total transmission failure.the service manger agreed with me that this was an usual situation. As head of engineering development at temic automotive, n.a., now owned by continental teves, i was involved in the investigations into hundreds of cases of 'thermal incidents' on abs controllers on nearly every program.the incidence was highest, on those vehicles with the greatest exposure of the connector to the elements.our investigations showed that a direct battery to ground short would develop in the presence of moisture and contamination, and even a 'sealed' connector design would not prevent this.the highest failure rate was on the chrysler minivan.an interim fix using a raychem gasket was employed, and even used as a silent recall fix on many customer vehicles.it is my opinion now, that this should have been a recallable issue, should such an direct short situation develop that it might lead to a vehicle fire.i am not aware of any vehicle fires directly traceable to this.i would think the probability would be very low, but i'm sure it is not zero.i think the actions taken, and the vehicles effected, and the lack of warranty coverage for a known defect in many customer cases should be investigated by nhtsa.the time period of interest would be from my 1997 up until 2000 or 2001.the main platforms effected would be chrysler minivan, jeeps and ford explorer.
This morning when i put the car in drive, i heard a loud constant squealing noise.i attempt to turn the steering wheel to the left, but the van took off striaght ahead and would not turn and crashed into a parked car, which was totalled afterwards.although my foot was on the brakes at all times,my van continued to propel forward.it then knocked over a tree approx. 12 ft. Tall and finally stopped when it ran into a neighbors shrubs.fortunately, no one was injured or walking in front of the van at the time or perhaps someone may have been killed.upon investigation, there was visible skid marks from where my van was parked to where it finally stopped, which was over 60 feet away.ironicallly, my van was still drivable after all the damaged it had done. I had it towed to a local chrysler dealership, they conducted a test drive and found nothing out of the ordinary.i have serious reservation about ever driving my van again.if there have ever been any similiar complaints, please let me know.i can be contacted at 011 49 6202 29935 or email [email protected].

On my minivan (like most cars) there is a sensor for the front brakes so that when the front brakes pads are wearing thin, the sensor causes a high pitched shrill to be sounded.my sensor failed to function at all-hence i continued to use my brakes for a significantly longer time than i should have.as a result, by the time i was alerted to any damage to the brakes whatsoever, both the front and back brakes were so destroyed my van required an entire brake overhaul.fortunately, once i heard a dreadful 'metal against metal' sound (my very first warning), i was able to drive directly to the dealership.unfortunately, the dealership basically called me a liar when i told them about the defective sensor and they refused to pay any portion of my bill.

Nhtsa recall 96-v-215-000, themaster cylinder rear seal, between the hydraulic fluid and the vacuum reservoir, may not seal adequately, allowing hydraulic fluid to be drawn into the power assist vacuum reservoir. Consumer had the same problem while driving at 30 mph applied brakes andbrake pedal went down to the floor, and did not brake at all.
Receivedd recall letter (#96v215000) 3 weeks ago; called dealer for appointment; was informed they had no parts; called manufacturer & informed no parts also.
Having owned maney cars and trucks since 1965 i feel these brakes are the worse ones i have owned to date and feel that they were resonsible for the accident.the brakes require too much foot pressure to apply. I have driven other chrysler vans, and feel it is the 1996and abovemodel year that have the greatly increased foot pressure requirments to stop. It seems like the vacuum booster is too small. The 1994 dodge minivan we vanpool to work in has far better brakes in terms of brake power to foot pressure response. I have driven several different ones at the dealers and it seems to just be the late models that are efected. It requires too much foot pressure for a small personduring a panic stop. Regular braking seems to be ok, but i would prefer a lighter pedal.

On numerous occasions since owning our 1997 town and country chrysler van, anytime we have run into an even slight puddle, turning left onto our street, we have completely lost all power and unable to turn....running into the neighbor's yard....where children have played, at times.we reported such to our dealer with their saying that "no one has ever reported this." apparently, they have now. We would like it fixed please, at no cost to us.also, our transmission for two years works and then doesn't work, with our having to drive off the road, turn off the van, and turn back on in order to have it shift properly....especially when the air conditioning has been on.we would like that fixed, too, with no cost to us....for it must be a defect as it hasn't quit completely.thank you, larry wright7/08/05
Every time i drive into a puddle my steering wheel locks up, it takes about 2 minutes for the car to regain its steering.i have three children and this has happend dozens of times.i went to chrysler in vero beach, florida and at first they told me they never heard of this happening to anyone.they then told me the belt got wet and replaced it.the next day it happened again on the highway when i was 1 1/2 hours from home and they said bring it back which i did that day.when i returned to new york with the same problem the dealership in larchmont, new york said they never heard of the problem and could not fix it.this summer i was in vero beach and they said they heard of the problem but fixed my problem 2 years ago and now the car is no longer under warranty.this is extremely dangerous!i cannot hit a puddle for if i do, i cannot control my car.you can hear the steering straining while i am trying to control the car.i have 3 children, chrysler should repair this correctly and have a recall immediately.please help!

The power steering system functions properly at start-up, but somtime after driving, the steering system locks-up. It actually requires more force to turn the wheel than if the engine had stalled. Several trips to various chrysler dealers failed to diagnose the problem until tuesday, may 30 at walser chry. In burnsville, mn. I own a 1997 chrysler town and country sx.my wife and i bought this mini-van back in 09/97.my problem is this, during the rainy season, everytime i step on the brake or accelerate from the full stop, i can hear water splashing back and forthe on the rear driver side.local dealership were able to get rid of the water, at no cost, that was trapped on the "seam plate" (that's what they called it).after 36,000 miles, i called the local dealership's service department for the same situation, and they said that my new car warranty had expired and that if i wanted the problem fixed, i would have to pay for it on my own.isn't trapping water inside the "seam plate" would cause for its components to rust and that rusting could make those tainted areas fragile?please advise if i should be concerned regarding my vehicle's situation or what i should do to get the problem fixed. Events leading to failure: rusty mcpherson strut tower attachment points, a widespread problem with certain chrysler autos.the part that rusts out is part of the car's reinforced unibody sheet metal.both the front left and front right strut towers are rusted, but the left (driver's side) cracked open upon hitting a pothole, making a 1.5" x 4" hole in the strut tower attachment.this caused the front left wheel to wander over uneven pavement, since the strut was no longer securely anchored to the car, making the car too dangerous to drive.what was done: i purchased a chrysler strut tower repair kit and installed it.note that these are available at most auto parts stores.this is an indication of how widespread a problem this is with some chrysler models, as well as the thousands of complaints about this on the internet.there has been no recall on this widespread safety defect, though there should be one.chrysler will only repair this defect for free under their regular warranty.they charge approximately $900 for the repair.i grew up in a "chrysler family."between my parents and myself, we've owned abouttwenty chrysler, dodge, plymouth and imperial cars and trucks, but after all of the numerous and expensive problems i've had with this car, i've sworn off chrysler for good.their quality control is absent.

The screw holding the hydraulics to the van body broke and the rear hatch came crashing down on my head. I have been suffering from headaches, neck and shoulder stiffness and pain.
Strut retaining bolts on the rear hatch on a 1997 chrysler t&c failed (sheared) when opening and closing the hatch. One strut bolt (passenger side) failed in 2002, the other strut bolt (driver's side) failed 6/27/04. The 2002 failure occurred while opening the rear hatch. The resulting failure cause the hatch to drop on the head of child resulting in a bump which didi not require medical attention. The 2004 failure occurred when shutting the hatch locking the hatch in a near closed position as the strut lodged itself behind the closing bumper (bolt with rubber cap). First strut was replaced with dealer replacement part by owner. The 2nd strut has not been replaced yet. Close observation of the 2nd strut with failed retaining bolt showed a streak of rust across the shear plane. Looks like there was porosity or material anomaly that resulted in premature failure of retaining bolt. Did not notice if this was the case on first strut assembly. Both old struts are available.
The right side rear liftgate strut broke where it was connected to the body of the vehicle.this occurred upon closing the liftgate, resulting inliftgate not being supported when in the open position.

Went in for oil change to casey auto asked for a free inspection of vheicle.they foundthe strut tower corrosion perforation on one side the other is perfect.they explained that this was very dangerous ,if the strut goes throughthe front side would drop.they explained there was a service bulletion on this and without any hesitation i went to chrysler who took my information , explanin that i was not in any danger they have seen worse and told me i would be notified.after almost one month later i was told bychrysler --- sorry ,if the vehicle was 7 years it would be covered , normally this would not be covered after 36mth. But chrysler is extending it to 7 years, unforturtly my vehicle is 7yrs and 9months. Needless to say this is an expensive repair but most importantly is it dangerour or not??one mechanic says yes chrysler says no.now it was just by chance that a good mechanic saw this, chrysler is well aware they have a problem.i feel this is somethingthat i need to bring to someones attention.
Possible suspension problem that must create excessive wear on the tires and causes the car to wobble at low speeds.tires need to be replaced at one-half or less of their useful life.dealer was not aware of the problem but michelin knew how to treat the symptom, put a new set of tires on the car, but not necessarily how to cure the problem. The contact owns a 1997 chrysler town and country. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact noticed a tapping noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostics where the mechanic advised that the surface around the strut on the front driver side was corroded because of poor drainage from the drainage system.the mechanic installed a cap on the corroded surface to minimize corrosion of the original part. There is a technical service bulletin issued by chrysler on oct. 14,2002 (tsb 23-044-02) on the problem and it covers all minivans build from 1996 until 2000. My 1997 chrysler town and country mini van has rusting front strut tower assembly's . My mechanic that if this condition is left as is , it will result in the front struts failing by premature failure of the chassis to hold them in place. This will result in the loss of steering . This could easily lead to an immediate accident. This is a know defect for 1996 to 2000 mini vans. The chrysler company had repair parts available but will not on it's own make a recall. I am asking that this recall me made immediately as to avoid the likelihood of accidents due to a defect in the manufactures design. The year 2001 chassis was changed to resolve this problem. Please act to help us get monetary assistance from the manufacture immediately.this is a well know problem that is being ignored. Parts are available to remedy the defect but only if paid by the owners of the defective vehicles. Since all the vans in question suffer this condition , it could not bethe result of the owners. Can you help us?thank you.
The left front suspension tower has corrosion on the top side just outside of the bolt circle.chrysler knows about this defect and has a service bullitin number 23-044-02 covering 1996-2000 models for the repair.they do not furnish parts or pay for the repair.this defect will in time cause failure of the strut mount resulting in a serious accident.

I feel there is a defect in the 1997 chrysler mini van shock tower.i brought my car in to be looked at because it was riding rough in the front end.the dealershipreplaced the struts 7/13/04 at 107,819 miles.on 11/19/04 i had the front end realigned at, because it wasn't handling poorly.they found it very dangerous, the left front strut lower mount bolts were loose/causing strut to pop in knuckle mount and both bolts were loose.then now, 5/27/08 at approximately 170,780 miles i was told me that the right strut was bad and the left strut was ready to pop through the frame of the car where it was rusted.this is directly under the hood, i do not see any reason for it rusting.i was told it could of been very dangerous for us if the left strut had popped out.chrysler sells a kit specifically to reinforce this problem, it is part number and description:5080009-aa (cap shock 23034233), 5086513-ab (cap pkg s 23034233) and 5083855-aa (adhesive 1081005).they also had to install longer bolts, so the car could be aligned correctly.after repairing the shock tower and replacing the struts, it was realigned.i did without my car for over 4 weeks.i feel there is a defect in the shock tower, they sell a kit specifically to address this problem and the defect is a safety concern.
The strut housing on my 1997 chrysler town&country are both rusting and will soon render my van inoperatable. The passenger side is the worst and there both getting worse. I will be in danger if i continue to drive it.
Front end vibrates at 35-45 mph. Dealer has inspected the vehicle and is not able to correct the problem.
Auto in generally very good condition, with 110000 miles on odometer.i bought from chrysler dealer in 2004 with 90000 miles on odometer.i noted a fairly sudden "friction" in the steering (i.e. Slow to return to center after a turn).entered a parking lot to inspect, stopped, then turned the wheel to enter a parking space and the left ball joint broke (was not moving).repair shop (not the dealership) replacedthe "permanently lubricated" original joint with after-market part which includes a grease fitting for future lubrication.the shop found thatthe other ball joint had a grease point, indicative of previous replacement, and lubricated that joint. In my judgment, this is a very critical failure; it could easily have resulted in injury or death. The car is too new and the mileage is too low to justify this as normal wear, and the shop foreman said "we see these all the time".i believe chrysler should look at this and a recall or improvement may be in order.

Air bag light is on continuous, horn does not work, and cruise control does not work.
While driving about 60 mph with cruise control on when suddenly vehicle accelerated, andair bag light came on.consumer took vehicle to dealer to be repaired, but vehicle was not under warranty to be fixed.
While driving at 65 mph vehicle jumped out of gear, and the engine revved very high. Consumer stopped the vehicle, and killed the engine.after a minuteconsumer restarted the vehicle and pulled out. Currently, vehicle would not go out of second gear.vehicle was taken to a dealer, whodetermined that a new transmission was needed.
The vehicle took off as soon as it was put into drive, even with the drivers foot on the brake pedal. Dealer said nothingwaswrong with the vehicle.
Airbag light on and cruise control turned on and off.replaced clock spring.when looking for information on clock spring saw how many others had failed and decided to add my voice.a non-woring airbag is a safety issue, especially in vehicles marketed to young families.
Clock springs are not working properly andhorn/cruise control have gone out due to this default. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything.the consumer's insurance would not pay forthe clock spring replacement because they claim it was the manufacturing defect.
Cruise control went out, and then airbag light came on. Also, horn would not work.
Consumer is experiencing problems with steering column whereairbag light comes on/loss of cruise control, and electrical problems.please provide any additional information/attachments.
The throttle had stuck wide open. Had cruise control at 73mph. Started to brake to release cruise control, but it did not release. Took off exit & put in neutral & applied brakes. Vehicle still going. Shifted into park & vehicle finally stopped. Took to dealer & manufacturer buying vehicle back.
Consumer put vehicle in drive and vehicle experienced surged, crashing into a church, consumers foot was not on the accelerator at any time, the air bags failed to deploy.consumer recently experienced a bad fuel smell and difficulty starting vehicle, a dealer stated that they could not find any problems and that the consumer needed to take the vehicle back to the dealer where it was purchased, consumer had the fuel pump replaced.
Air bag light remains on while driving, alsohorn & the cruise control are inoperative. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
The clock spring controls the air bag system, horn and cruise control system. I was told by the repair technician at the dealership that the part(clock spring) has failed on other vehicals and that chrysler has recalls on some of these vehicals for the same part.
Cruise control failed first due toclock spring. I did not have this fixed but now teh air bag is failing as well.
Airbag light stayed on , and cruise control didn't work. Dealer identifiedproblem as being clock spring. Consumerwas responsible for $150 for repairs.
Sudden acceleration resulted in an accident. (drivers foot was not on the accelerator).
Horn won't blow, cruise control only works intemittently, air bag light stays on continuously.
Without prior warning while traveling onhighway noticed that there was no horn or cruise control, and airbag light appeared on dashboard.
Parts for recall have not been available due to back orders.
Van unexpectedtly surged forward at high speed from a parked position to cause a crash of incredible destruction to the church, without foot on accelerator.the air bags did not deploy.consumer is smelling gas, consumer can not find any problems.consumer states vehicle is hard to start.
When driving with cruise control engaged, cruise control will deactivate by itself and without warning, drastically reducing vehicle's speed.
Windshield wipers stop working, then start working, then stop again without warning.i never know when they will work or not. I have taken it to two different repair places and they can't diagnose the problem because wipers have not completely stopped working.it is very hazardous not knowing if the wipers will work or not, and no one seems to be able to fix them permanently.
The defroster does not function properly. When it rains or snows,it makes it harder to see. Dealer has no solution.
The heater control unit has malfuntioned. When the heat is on, cold air comes out of the vents on the passenger side of the vehicle only.nlm
The air bag warning light remains illuminated indicating a malfunction. Consumer also states since this problem has occurred the horn has become inoperable and a clicking noise is coming from the horn area.nlmconsumer states cold air came out of the passenger side vents when the heat is turned on due to a faulty heater control.dealer replaced faulty clockspring.
Rear window exploded while van was in park. Temperature was normal, and consumer didn't hit anything.
Visual sysytem, the rear window is overtinted, causing vision problems, cannot see at night.
While the vehicle was parked in front of my residence at approx. 8:30 pm i heardan exploding sound come from the van. I went outside to see what had happened and saw the rear window blown out from the inside. It was obvious that the window broke from the inside out because the glass was pushed out and completely shattered, a few chips of glass were on the outside of the van approx 3 to 4 feet away from the rear of the van, indicating the force with which the window blew out. I took some pictures to try and show the window and the obvious direction the glass was broken out in butsince the window was shattered the glass started breaking apart and falling all over. I feel this is and extreme saftey hazard which might have been caused by the hot temperatures we were having or a defect in the rear window. The window broke in what appears to be the weak part of the glass as it busted out at the peak of the curve. Thank you i would like to know if other owners have had similar problems.
The flimsy plastic clips that hold the windows to the track of the power door windows are a hazard. They brake extremely easy and could leave a person trapped inside the car in a event of not being able to open the door. Our van is currently disabled to the plastic retainer clip braking. As an engineer myself i am appalled at the poor design. I'm sure the design was cheap to manufacture, but its totally incapable of surviving any stress.****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis***761559
Windshield wiperswill activate unexpectedly.dealership has not examinedvehicle, but informed consumer that windshield wiper switch could be faulty.please provide any additional information / documentation.
Dear nhtsa: the problem is simple. The rearview mirror fell off the windshield because, i assume, the heat of the afternoon. Luckily, it did not occur while i was driving, but happened while the car was parked outdoors. It was a hot and humid day. (in newark, n.j.) i understand from friends this is becoming something of a regular problem and auto parts stores are now stocked with replacement kits. I went back to my dealer, and there was no problem getting it fixed. There is a problem, however, that it happened to a car that has only been on the road for 2 years 7 months. I've owned cars far longer -- from three to eight years -- and this has never happened before. Beyond the obvious danger of this happening when operating the car, or driving around without a mirror for a day until it gets fixed, i do think that rejecting this as warranty work because the car has been driven more than 36,000 miles is ludicrous. A rearview mirror is obviously an important safety feature and manufacturers should be required to own up if they fall off windshields. I also think you might have to check to see if this is a chronic problem for chrysler motors. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Rearview mirror keeps dislodging from windshield since the car was purchased in 1997. Last incident occurred during a lane change in traffic. Service manager indicated that this is a common problem especially with cars with heavy mirrors (electonics such as a mirrordimmer). Problem also appears to involve other brands. Recall to correct problem before a fatal accident occurs.
Outside rear view mirror.
When vehicle is inpark and the key is not in the ignition, the consumer can still shift the gears to reverse.dealer has been notified.the rearview mirror had fallen.(assumed due to the heat)the consumer's daughter moved the gear shift down and in reverse and the second vehicle was adjacent but several feet behind the vehicle.the driver's side door was severely pushed forward and the front end of the second vehicle was damaged. *scc
Rear view mirror continues to fall off even after consumer glued it back on many times.nlm
Rear view mirror failed.
The rear and side windows have a manufacturing tint on the side and rear windows, causing poor visiblty, consumer had number amount of mishaps.
The windshield wiper turns off and on for no reason, while driving. Dealer has been contacted.ph
Consumer have been experiencing ongoing problem with windshield wipers whichkeep coming on for knowreason. Been in/out of dealer shop, and problem cannot be resolved.
Windshield wipers intermitently shut off.

Windshield wipers self activate.
The wipers turn on at random times for random intervals.dt
The rear brakes locked up while the vehicle was being driven.this caused the brakes to burn up and ruin all the rear components.the wipers would activate without being turned on.this would happen intermittently without warning.the dealer knew exactly what was needed to repair so i believe this is a factory defect they knew about.
When you start up the vehicle, the intermediate wipers and wiper button both flash continuously, other buttons (ac and circulation) do not light up at all.airbag indicator light goes on and off.horn doesn't work on occasion.wipers turn on by themselves sometimes.occasionally doesn't start when raining or will die while driving in the rain.
The windshield wipers functioned sporadically.
Intermittently windshield wipers came on without turning on the wiper switch. Probelm was reported to the dealership. The problem has not been corrected. Please provide any further information.
Consumer stated while driving, the windshield wipers came on without touching the controls. Also, the door latchesactivated while the vehicle was in motion, even though no one had touched them. *ph
Engine failed on interstate while traveling at 70 mph. Problem is intermittent.dealers have not been able to correct problem.

While driving in inclement weather the windshield wipers became inoperable. Consumer contacted the dealer. However, the problem still existed.
The windshield wipers come on intermittently on their own.nlm
Windshield wipers would work intermittently when turned off. Happened at any speed zero to 70mph.dealer replaced mutifunction switch, corrected. Dealers response indicates this to be a common problem. Expensive for me to correct. Poor engineering.mirror d

Well i'am having electrical issues now i close my hood and my 4 ways start blinking, i turn on my van and the abs & and air bag light come on when i start it but never go off.the cv boot is bad and the half shalf on passenger side i think its making alot of sound when i go down the road ,i already brought brand new outter tie rod ends for both sides, and swag bar lings brand new for both sides springs and mounts, and struts the radio seems to fade in and out you can not see any station numbers or clock time on it so i figured its and elec issues and now in the last couple of day like about july29th, 2015 , i got back home and noticed my temperture light on dash came on and it said hit was it was hot, the day before i just paid for and oil change and thats because their was oil all over the engine and to find out the bolts were all loose but 1 which was striped, but anyways now my fans are not going around and its not keeping my van cool my husband has checked all fuses but can't find the relay for the radiator fan if that even has anything to do with it, i have put over 1,000 in this van now, i'am handid cap and i really need my van to get me around i also don't have the remote to open the doors or lock it so i have to do it with the key , it surely would be nice to have a remote that goes with this van , but it surely would be great if things would work right to, i can be driving it down the road and the automatic door locks will be locking and un locking while i'am driving all by their self also the window wipers wipe but the fluid will not come out on the front windows or the back windows, ihope you can help me out i walk with 1 to 2 canes and sometimes a walker, i have braces on my legs and have to help myself at putting my legs in , i really need a mini van that will work for me, thank you.
