While driving in heavy traffic, started to smell smoke. A/c went out. Smoke started to enter cabin area. Pulled over and the electrical harness was on fire. I was able to extinquish the fire. It seems the wire for the hood light, attached to the hood hinge, may have been caught between the frame and the hood, cutting into the insulation and shorting the wire to the frame. It is believed to have caused an overload to the wiring harness, which started on fire.

The serpentine belt falls off of my 1992 chrysler town and country whenever i go through a puddle... No matter how fast or slow i go.when the belt comes off everything goes, including the powersteering-not a good thing when its raining and the roads are already slick.i called my local chrysler dealer and was told that though there is a fix for newer vehicles they don't make one for mine.i've tried replacing the belt, the pulleys, the tensioner, and nothing helps.

Water pump failure.

Cooling fan failed.

Consumer stated while driving, the engine began to act erractically, and when consumer pulled over, the vehicle became engulfed in flames. (ohio traffic crash report #10-91-530)

The main serpentine belt of our 1992 chrysler town & country flies off when your driving when there is a little water or snow on the road while driving down the road.when this happens--driving becomes very difficult (no power steering available then).it takes a while to get it fixed.i've been stranded quite a few times because of this problem.i have a friend with the same kind of van and has the same problem.

While driving on highway approximately 60mphclutch plate on the a/c compressor froze up, and the serpentine belt continued to rub on the compressor until it bursted into flames .

Plastic headlight lens has deteriorated/became obscured to the point of preventing light from passing through to light roadway.

Headlamp lenses are turning yellow, causing poor visibility. Please provide further informaton.

Head light lenses degrading due to weather / uv exposure. Light transmission reduced by at least 3 db; probably 6 db; possibly as much as 10 db. Night visibility seriously compromised. Chrysler corporation will not address this problem;chrysler safety complaint file # 7864868. Vehicle currently is under recall for windshield wiper pivot problem. I consider lack of night visibility to be much more serious problem. Vehicle does not currently meet minimum mandated lighting standards owing to lens degradation. Since the headlight assembly on these cars is a two-piece unit, consisting of a lamp and a "bucket" containing the lens, normal replacement of lamps does not correct problem, as would be the case with sealed beam lights. The headlight assembly is quite expensive, and will not be replaced by chrysler. This means that there is ahigh cost item that must be replaced at owner's expense periodically in order to maintain safety. The plastic lens assembly will degrade again within the expected life ofthe vehicle. Furthermore, the falure is extremely dangerous, in that it sneaks up on one... It takes a considerable degradation of light to be noticed, because the failure is so gradual. This is why i was aproximate in dating the failure on the first part of this form... The failure was so gradual that i am not sure of the time frame, within 6 months or so, of when the light output fell below minimum legal standards. I feel that the nhtsa should require chrysler to retrofit all similar headlight assemblies with new assemblies built with glass lenses at chrysler's expense. If this is not done, it is only a matter of time (it may have already happened) that someone is seriously injured or killed in a night time accident due to faulty illumination. Thank you, james k. Thorusen.

Transmission failure.

Transmission shifts irregularly.tt

Transmission shifts erratically.

When the vehicle is slowed down and stopped , it downshifts very hard and goes into second gear and won't shift out of gear,. The vehicle has to be turned off and the computer has to reset itself.when the vehicle is turned back on it is fine.when it is stopped again, the problem repeats itself. Dealer states that the computer is not designed properly, the computer was redesigned in the later models, but not this one. The transmission was redone and the sensors kept burning out.

I purchased this vehicle in february 1996. It was only a few months after i purchased the vehicle, that i noticed very hard up and down shifts, a jerking motion when shifting down from second gear to first gear, and a ratcheting sound when down shifting from second to first gear, within the transmission. In june 1998, an authorized chrysler dealership deemed the second gear within the transmission was gone, so i had them replace the transmission with a remanufactured chrysler transmission. They also had to place an "updated" computer module so that the transmission would work properly with the vehicle's computer system. The total replacement cost amounted to $1,603.13. The replacement transmission also displayed harsh shifting. In october 1998, the transmission became stuck in second gear and would not shift up or down, so i took the vehicle back to the chrysler dealership for service. The technician reset the computer (at a cost of $35.00) and the vehicle began to shift, but still displayed rough up and down shifting. The transmission then failed (9 months after installation) on march 31, 1999 and for the second time, another remanufactured transmission had to be installed. I contacted the daimler/chrysler corporation, and they agreed to replace the transmission, but i had to pay all labor costs ($424). In may 1999, the second remanufactured transmission became hard to place in gear when shifting from park to reverse and park to drive, even though the vehicle was on level ground with no stress on the transmission. The vehicle also continued to display harsh up and down shifting. I took the vehicle back to the dealership, but they could not find anything wrong with it (no charge). To this day, the transmission still displays rough shifting during acceleration and deceleration, the ratcheting sound is still very evident, and at times it is hard to place the vehicle in gear during upstarts. It is evident the remanufactured chrysler transmission is defective. Thank you

While driving vehicle is not shifting properly, it locks into second gear.please provide any further information.

Engine doesn't shift into 2nd gear at the proper time.vehicle jerks just as it's coming to a stop.it bucks when t accelerating. Reconditioned transmission has been replaced 3 times.consumer has put alot of money intransmission that may be defective.

While driving with cruise control on transmission failed for unknown reason.

Transmission jumped out of gear into neutral - could not shif out of neutral unless engine was shut off.

Chrysler authorized dealership replaced the transmission with a new one in 1998, due to the failure of 2nd gear. In 1999, a total failure of the transmission occurred with only 21,000 recorded miles after replacement. Breakdown occurred while on an interstate highway. Replaced again with another remanufactured transmission supplied by a chrysler authorized dealership. Upshift/downshifts continue to be harsh and jerk at times, even with the latest transmission.

My vehicle brake light came on along with the anti lock light. I could hear a hum noise under the hood at the braking unit. Brake pedal got very hard and had to use both feet along with putting the vehicle into neutral to slow down and stop! braking abs system was replaced because of same failure 07/2009. Now being told no dealer has the equipment to test that system and chrysler corp told me there is no warranty on those parts! i was told last time it was replaced that the pump/motor unit was warranted as long as i own the vehicle and all other parts of that unit extended warranty of 100,000 miles. Vehicle has been sitting the last three years!just decided to drive it again 11/2014. Can go out and drive it right now and everything works fine. But brakes give out at anytime, although the brake light no longer comes on! seems once that system gets too hot the brakes fail. Let it sit for a day or two and it works again! right now i can't get it tested. Everyone says they can't do it. Last dealer that did replaced the unit had me bring the vehicle there again. Then called me and said they had good news and bad news. Good news was they had the part. Bad news they couldn't test the system for go ahead from chrysler to replace it. Chrysler today said sorry, and hope we can be of service to you in the future! now what? ps- since talking to chrysler after contacting them again, that dealer now says they don't even have the part anymore! after being asked by chrysler how do they have the part in stock but can't test the system!

The abs on my 1992 chrysler town & country failed august 2006.our mechanic advised my husband that the abs pump motor assembly and brake actuator piston assembly had failed, but that he believed that the abs on the vehicle was covered by a lifetime warranty due to a recall.however, chrysler at first lied to us that there was no recall.after paying over a $1,000 to have the repair done, the parts failed a second time.this time, my husband went to the nhtsa website and found that there was in fact a recall~96v099000~ for this problem.he called daimler-chrysler today at 1-800-853-1403.he was told this time that 'yes, there was a recall, but that the information on your website was in error and that there was no lifetimecoverage.'my husband then contacted the mechanic and obtainedan alldata report that contained the chrysler service bulletin #685.the service bulletin not only has information that shows how to diagnose and repair the defective parts, but it also had a letter that chrysler supposedly sent to all vehicle owners.this letter states in part, "if problems with these components are found at any time during the entire life of your vehicle, chrysler will replace these components free of charge."my husband called daimler-chrysler a second time at the above number and even after reading the letter to the customer service representative contained in chrysler's own bulletin #685, he was told that daimler-chrysler had no obligation whatsoever to make the required repairs as there was no lifetime coverage.it was again suggested by chrysler that your agency erredin stating that there is lifetime coverage and that my husband could not be reading the letter in the bulletin correctly and refused to honor the lifetime coverage provisions in your recall.
