Dt:consumer started vehicle while in carport. Heput the car reverse moved about 1 foot and the dash blew up. Consumer said it was so loud that neighbors heard it from inside their houses and came running out. Both air bags deployed and the consumer said that smoke bellowed out of thesteering column. Parts of the car were blown all over the interior. Consumer says incident was like a bomb going off. Consumer thought that he had been car bombed. Consumer said that there was no physical contact to vehicle to cause air bags to deploy. Consumer says there are other witnesses available. Consumer says investigator that looked at vehicle told consumer that he had investigated 3 other such instances.
On july 11, 2005 i drove from my home in bolivia, nc to dunn, nc (approx. 125 mi) to pick up my grandson & a friend.while parked in the parking lot of the crackerbarrell restaurant at the intersection of rt 421 & i95, i started the engine and leaned out the window to say goodbye to my daughter. Suddenlyboth front airbagsexploded filling the car with smoke and fumes.all three of us immediately exited the automobile.i suffered a severe brused and cut right arm and brusing to the right side of my neck & shoulder and a twisted right knee.i was taken to the hospital in dunn by the paramedics & released.the children were not injured.had the incident occurred five minutes later, we would have been travelling south on #421, a 2 lane hwy used mostly by 18 wheelers and other large trucks.no doubt i would not be here writing this report.i can't imagine being able to retain control of the car if the airbag had exploded in my face while travelling at 55 mph.the airbag on the passenger side exploded with such force that it broke the windshield.the airbag on the dirvers side completely broke off the cruise control mechanism on the right side of the steering column.a police report was filed with the dunn police department (case # oca 2005 01833). The car was left in the parking lot undisturbed until wednesday the 13th, when it was towed to martin's auto body shop on beach road in southport, nc.it remains there undisturbed.on july 15th a mr james williams, sent by chrysler, inspected the car. (file # 13779399).on july 19th state farm sent an inspector. (claim # 330713425, team #44).i am awaiting news from chrysler as to what action they will take to replace, repair or otherwise compensate me for the loss of this vehicle and trauma to me and the children.
An accident occurred in peru, indiana, resulting in a collision. The air bag on the driver's side failed to deploy but the passenger's frontal airbag did. Driver was killed.*cw

Checked wiring under dash and found ok.disconnected sterio power amp and reset body control module.
Recall #717, power mirror switch, alleged repaired 03-20-97 according to chrysler vip summary report. Return to dealer 12-01-09 due to all 4 positions not working. Invoice states "check recall #717,""no longer covered," "needs mirror switch." guess i'm suppose to buy the recalled mirror switch.
Vehicle is totally unmodified! while sitting at a light, i heard a pop (like a balloon popping) and smoke and flame burst from under the hood. Fire department observed fire began in the area of the fuel line and spread into the dashboard. Possible cause was electrical failure causing arc which compromised the rubber fuel hose.
The odometer and rpm gauge work intermittently.the abs light also comes on then goes off intermittently. Have changed fuses but stillhave the same results.

I just spent 12.95 on getting a car history report because my title says the car is a reconstructed,totaledtitle,but receiving your report it says they can't even find title and low and behold it isn't a reconstructed car????i'm confused ...what the hell did i pay for..the family doesn't know anything about this,it's there deceased mom's car..i'm writing you and complaining about this site,either i get the right report since i'm holding the title in my hand that says opposite of your findings,or my money back? i really wanted to find out why the car is reconstructed totaled title your site does not give anyone any other place to get ahold of your scam ,when someone has been took for there money and giving no information...
I presently own a 1996 chrysler serbring convertible that was purchased new in 1996.the battery for this vehicle is located behind the front drivers side of the vehicle.in order to gain access the battery you must remove the front tire and then the shroud that covers the wheel well.my battery has been replaced three times since the date of purchase.the first time was on the day that the vehicle was purchased;the second time was in 1999 and most recently today; november 22, 2005.during the process of replacing the battery on 11/22 our mechanic found that the battery casing that holds the battery in place was totally corroded and needed to be repaired.the cause of this corrosion (according to my mechanic) is from battery acid and other elements.additionally, the drivers side frame of the car was also damaged/corroded due to the battery acid and that the frame would need to be replaced/repaired as well and that the vehicle was not safe to drive.i spoke with chrysler corporation just prior to writing to you and they advised me that there was nothing that they could do because of the age of the vehicle; despite the fact that i truly believed that this situation was caused by extremely poor engineering of the vehicle.i have taken the liberty of writing to you because of 1) i believe that there are other chrysler sebring convertible that are experiencing the same problem that the drivers may be totally unaware of and 2) if in fact they are or could have in the future a corroded battery casing and more so a corroded frame.the potential of an accident due to the issues appears to be inevitable.your help regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The driver tried to restart the vehicle and was not able to do so.vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the wiring harness, electrical control module, and circuit breakers needed to be replaced, and replaced them. However, the problemrecurred.
Car caught fire while parked in high school parking lot. Fire caused by electrical arcing from side view mirror motor on driver door.

Vehicle stalls or nearly stalls during operation in an unpredictable manner. Vehicle will restart. The following components have been replaced without improvement: egr valve, ais motor, pcm, distributor.

While driving, a/c compressor seized, and resulting friction caused belt to smolder and break, disabling the vehicle.
Air conditioner compressor seized while driving causing belt to burn and break.
Alarm system wiring shorted due to it rubbing against the car body.this caused the engine kill mechanism to activate the car would not start and the alarm could not be shut off.repair shop had to cut and resplice the wires so that car would start.

This car is a nightmare when it rains. I traveled one and a half hours in a storm. The water on the back drivers side floor where i had clothes in a small pile..they were literally floating from so much water that was pouring in. At any time that i had to stop at a light the water would then come to the front in ahuge wave of water. What the heck is that?
(1) headlamps not illuminating sufficiently.(2) the material used in the lenses for the headlamp assemblies on my 1996 chrysler sebring convertible have yellowed and fogged over to the point that the illumination factor has decreased to a totally unsafe level for night driving. This could result in failure to see hazards in time to circumvent.(3) notified daimler chrysler of this condition and it's safety impact.this condition should not occur on a major piece of equipment such as the headlamps.their response was basically that they have no liability or responsibility to correct this problem.they informed me that i should replace the headlamps at my expense.the current cost for a single headlamp is $335.00 ea.i have the email correspondances that we have sent to each other if you need them. As of now this vehicle is not used for night time operation.i cannot afford to spend almost $700.00 to replace these headlamps.this type of equipment is required on all vehicles and is considered to be safety equipment.
Consumer stated the engine would race when traveling at low speeds and at the same time when braking, on one occasion consumer was unable to stop the vehicle even with both feet on the brake, also there was a recall performed on the vehicle regardiing the gas line, however the problem has since reoccured.

Vehicle roll back occurred when gear shift was knocked out of park.*mr while the vehicle was in park, the consumer's granddaughter accidentally hit the gear shift stick and the vehicle rolled backwards.(the consumer has since sold the vehicle)
Purchased vehicle in apr 05 from friends. Without the key in the ignition, the button can be pressed and the shift lever moved. While running, the button can be pressed and the shift lever moved without having to put foot on the brake pedal. Vehicle brought in to dealer and recall c45 alleged to be completed 10-25-05. Due to my children now use the car, a return was made to a dealer 12-01-09 for recall. Invoice states "reinspect recall #c45." while waiting, service advisor appeared to discuss recall and state that i needed to replace the interlock cable. Invoice stated "did recall c45 replace shifter rod," "need to replace interlock cable, $227.00." so it appears after doing another shifter rod, maybe the recall should be for the interlock cable as in another complaint # 10126915.though i said this was a recall and a safety issue, he repeated i'd have to pay for the interlock cable. About to leave, a long spring was found on drivers floor area. Service advisor was shown same and said a new one was put in, hopefully with a new shifter rod, though maybe that's the wrong fix for this safety defect.

Dt:consumerreceivednhtsarecall04v021000.checked vehicle, and consumer found that vehicle did have a transmissionproblem.consumer took vehicle to dealer. Once consumer picked up vehicle from dealerfound that vehicle would still come out of park without key in ignition. Consumer contacted the dealer again, and dealer told consumer that shewould have to pay for a cable to be replaced. However,dealer did not fix the problem.also, consumercontacted manufacturer,and manufacturertold consumer that vehicle could be taken to another dealer.however, if dealer felt that recall work was completed than dealer could be charged co a $35inspection fee, and thencharged for the repair if consumer decided to have it done.
Dt:the contactcould take vehicle out of park without pressing the brake.he received a recall notice of a safety defect. He notified the dealer,and they said the recall he got should have taken care of the problem.the dealership repaired the recall, but the problem still existed.he has not contacted the manufacturer.the consumer was told the shift interlock was not available on this particular model.updated 11/16/05.

I have a 96 chrysler sebring convertible jxi and the seatbelts "lock" in the retracted stage at various times.both belts lock and unlock at the same time. I don't know how this happens and have been told that i need new seat belts but i can't believe that both belts went bad at the exact same time, and that the release at the same time.i have read online that this is a common occurrence in this year and model of the sebring.
The passenger seat belt on my 96 sebring has locked up and can no longer be pulled out of the seat at all. I took it to the dealer and asked about a recall, but was told it would be "at least two hours labor, not counting parts and would be over $200 to fix). To me, this is clearly a defective product and a safety issue. I normally drive alone, so the belt got minimal use before becoming defective. I sent a detailed letter to daimler chrysler from their web site and got a very brief reply of "i'm sorry." there was no offer of help or suggestions to speak of. At any rate, it looks like it's going to cost me a few hundred dollars to get this fixed so that passengers in my car can ride in safety once again.
Callled dealer numerous times regardigng the failure of the seat belt. Dealer states not under warranty and estimates repair costing 60-300 to fix, i requested repeatedtly for a chrysler rep to contact me rgarding this problem as i feel it is a safety issue but to no avail. I have contacted chrysler directly but they will not repair without an estimate from the dealer. Due to the lack of response form mike shad, icontacted frank griffin chrylser in orange park, fl but they do not return my calls either. Chrysler may or may not repair problem dependent on estimate butdelaers seem unwilling to even provide that.my reference number at chrysler is 4406161 as i have had numerous issues with this vehicle since purchase date.
Driver seatbelt is not usable, it stays retracted.
Both front seat belts do not pull out of seat for usage.they are completely unoperational.
Front seat belts locked and wont work...the dealership that im having this worked on was going to charge me $756.00 to fix...chrysler is going to pay all but $200.00..since this is a safety issue and i believe a defect...i think they should be fixed at no charge.......
Wishing to install an infant car seat in back seat, discovered that no locks are present on the back seat seat belts allowing any passengers to be thrown from vehicle.this is especially dangerous in a convertible.
The shifter is not working
Brakes failed and immediately went to the floor when braking somewhat hard while hwy traffic was slowing quickly.if i hadn't pulled the emergency brake quickly, there is no telling what might have happened to my family and i.brake lines rusted through. *ln

The brake pads have been replaced approximately, every 5,000 miles and the rotors have been replaced three times.the brake pads wore on one side and not the other.when the brakes were applied on the highway they would go sideways.the consumer also had a concern about an "m 1999," inwhich the engine would smoke while in motion on the highway.oil leaked out from the top of the engine due to faulty parts.the engine was rebuilt by the dealer. *scc

The distance between the gas and brake pedals is designed poorly. When transferring foot from one pedal to another it will get stuck between the pedals.
Recall #750 front lower control arm ball joint alleged repaired 02-10-98. This is a new (10-08-09) recall. Due to my vehicle was at the dealer, it was asked if the numbers of the ball joints and control arms numbers could be checked to see if original chrysler or aftermarket quality parts were used. Though this is a serious safety issue, loss of steering, the service advisor advised i'd need to check the original repair order (02-10-98). The original owner is deceased. So i guess i should crawl under the car and look for wherever these parts are, let alone the numbers, or pay someone else to check them, or just hope chrysler had and used their own parts.

Tie rod end fell off car while moving.
Dt*:the consumer stated both tie rod ends fractured ontwo separate occasions.the first time, while backing out of the driveway, the front tires went in opposite directions and the vehicle would not move forward or backward.the tie rod end was replaced.the same failure occurred on the other side and the contact repaired the vehicle.upon inspection, it was determined the sealed pivot joints were not lubricated and resulted in these failures.
Tie rod fell off.started engine, proceeded to pull out of parking place and the tie rod fell off.since chrysler now makes tie rods so that they cannot be lubricated, they dry up and the end just drops off.i am fortunate that i was not driving down the highway 50 miles an hour when this happened.there is absolutely no forewarning of a problem until it happens.my mechanic also noticed that chrysler has installed a heat shield between the tie rods and brakes.i have saved the parts and i have notified chrysler of this situation.i have 78,000 miles on my car.i truly feel that the tie rod fell off due to a manufacturing defect or flawed design -- i am notifying you in the hopes that this will be looked into so that no one gets killed while driving down the highway.as i said i was very fortunate, the next person or family may not.feel free to contact me and if you would like me to ship the parts -- i will be glad to.thank you.

We compalined to our local service dealer, croton dodge in croton ny of a water leak from the car wash, the dealer discovered that the arm supportingconvertible roof had cracked completely all the way through.dodge says that because it is a frame problem and because of the mileage they are not responsible.since when does a vehicle owner have to protect himself from metal failure of a car frame?isn't it reasonable to expect a car frame to last the life of a car?croton dodge has estimated this job to cost well in excess of $2500.your assistancew is greatky appreciated.
Trunk springs for trunk lid no longer work. Have to hold trunk open manually. Springs are no longer available because of changes chrysler has made so i have to pay to have springs rewelded. Trunk lid has hit me in head on occasion.why should i pay for rewelding because of your changes on something so simple
The consumer lost control and spun for no apparent reason and crashed in an imbankment, possibly the lower and upper control arm failure. Also consumer was injured.

While merging into the interstate right front lower ball joint snapped off from the a- frame. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop. Mechanic determined that the problem was due to no lubrication/grease between the seating of the ball joints.

Large rubber boot cover detaches at high speeds and flys off in the middle of the highway. Held on only with 2 small velcro tabs. Dealer installation and recall for new instruction sticker did not solve the problem
The trottle stuck on my 1996 chrysler seabring.i was passing a vehicle and when ii went to brake and get in front of him i couldn't stop.the engine was reving at 8000 rpms.and i was holding the brakes as hard as i could and i was going about maybe 60 mph.i did get the car to come to a stop, after having to turn 2 corners very fast and going through an intersection.i had put it back and forth form nurtal & reverse and when the car was slow enough i put it in park and turned the key off.i came close to using a wall, or a house under construction for a way to stop.i was extreamy scarred and lucky that no one was hurt and at the time, no one had been going through the intersection. Today we called chrysler and they will fix the problem, but we need to get the car there.it is unsafe to even start theengine right now.we looked on line and found nhtsa campaign# 02v186000.

For about a year i have had an intermittent problem with the tachometer and odometer on my jxi.sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.the dealership said this is a common problem with the 1996 and 1997 's and that i need a new circuit board at a cost of over $700.00.not replaced yet.
Fuel indicator, tachometer and odometer operate properly intermittently (tach & odo are more frequently inoperative than operative) usually tach is at 0 and odo does not indicate any numbers. Fuel gauge usually operates, but drops suddenly.

Acceleration problem.going 35-40 in residential area, thought we were slowing down for stop light, acceleration pedal went to floor. Car sped up. Brakes would not stop the car. Emergency brake was pulled and car put into neutral. Stopped before reaching two cars ahead waiting to turn.
While driving 65 mph accelerator stuck and vehicle revved even though consumer had taken his foot of pedal, consumer applied brakes and emergency brake, he had to shut off engine to stop vehicle, the vehicle was towed to mechanic who determined that throttle cable had to be replaced, it was frayed which had caused it to get stuck.
While drivingaccelerator cable frayed, causing vehicle to accelerate to speeds of up to 80 mph.then,consumer stopped vehicle.contacted dealer,and the dealer was not willing to do anything.
While traveling approximately 50 mph vehicle suddenly accelerated to 75 mph, andlost control.vehicle crashed into the traffic barriers approximately three times beforestopping. Dealership examinedvehicle and determined that accelerator cable frayed.please provide any additional information / attachments.
