Dt*: the contact stated a recall letter was received for the vehiclein november 2004 and the recall repair work was completed by the dealer.in january 2005, the power steering fluid was continually low due to a leakindicating that one of the hoses was eroded.the dealer determined a pump and hose needed to be replaced to correct the problem.the hose was replaced previously under the recall but the pump was not.the dealer will not perform the necessary repairs for this manufacturer defect without a charge.the serpentine belt, brake pads and rotors and motor mount were replaced. The right side interior light was replaced. Updated 02/06/07.

While driving, vehicle was stuck on rail road tracks, when consumer was able to move vehicle from tracks, there was undercarriage damage and right front tire damage, vehicle shut off and both air bags deployed, consumer sustained severe damage to face and chest and was knocked unconscious and is receiving physical therapy, prior to purchase of vehicle, consumer informed dealer that plastic from the airbag was partially sticking out of the steering wheel, but dealer assured consumer this was ok, consumer is also concerned there may be a recall on vehicle.

I was driving the kids to school going about 20 mph and none of the airbags deployed. We hit the vehicle in front of us hard enough to break the bar behind the grill and smash into the radiator and ruin it. The bags should have deployed on that kind of impact.

Vehicle pulled out of business complex turn in left about a car lengths away from me when he pulled out..attempted to stop but vehicle was too close. No air bags deployed.

Takata recall:i was driving north, turning right on a 20 mph curve, when someone heading south, turned left on the curve, went over the line and hit me head on.when i came to, i heard myself screaming that i was on fire! ( but my car was not on fire.) then i didn't remember anything until i woke up in the hospital.i was covered in this hot powdery substance and i had burns where ever my skin was showing. I had cuts everywhere and dark marks in my skin for years.i had corneal scratches and irritated eyes too, along with dislocated jaw, seat belt injuries and a few other injuries.my tmj specialist realized i had metal in my face, looking at my mri.a few days after the mri, my face swelled up on the right side, my right eye was swollen shut and my face had a huge bump where the metal festered up from the mri,the er lanced it open, found particals but didn't do a biopsy, just threw it away. I never had face surgery or anything like that and it was too high on my cheek to be from dental work. I have documents on accident reports, drs documents, x rays, mri's showing the bloom of metal hiding my broken jaw.i have pictures too of me and deployed airbags. Although i don't have them here to scan. Hopefully i can come back to my form and update any information that is missing.thank you.my tmj dr and my maxio facial specialist said it had to be shrapnel and they cannot make any proper diagnosis of my tmj or broken jaw.i still have pain and still have shrapnel that has been coming out of my eye area and face for some time.i knew of all of this prior to the takata issues, i haven't been well enough to follow through with you until now. Thank you for your time.

For the past tw-three months, either it has stalled in the garage or on a busy thoroughfare.the authorized dealer has replaced transmission, i've had an oil change, we've had rental cars, tow trucks, i've missed church, flight connections, valuable time away from work-fifth time reporting-dealer has done everything-this car is going to be the death of me-it has toxic fumes-and is literally havine me to take it to the dealer and leaving it on the property.how do we contact the president, transmission has been replaced, it has had an oil change, the dealers can't find out what's wrong with it-and i'm ready to turn it in-it has cost me lost wages, time away from events in which i was to speak, and most of all, my sanity.how does one contact dr. Dr. Dieter zetsche, the president?there is no e-mail address.was there a fire?not yet, but there might be a loss of life if it continues to stall on these busy thoroughfares-it makes no sense.

Dt*:the contact stated that the airbag light illuminated.the vehicle has not been inspected by a mechanic.updated 7/5/2006 -

Upon starting vehicle all warning test lights such as airbag, oil pressure etc. Come on as normal, but often the red "airbag" light stays on indefinitely or goes off then bells and "airbag" red light reappear and stay on 5 to 10,seconds then go off every few minutes for several seconds. This seems to occur when i am in 1000 to 1500, low rooms like when i'm slowing to make a stop.yesterday, the airbag light stayed on the entire 20 minute trip.i took car in for repair on my own $ but problem returned. Problem has occurred at all, highway and street speeds but mostly with deceleration turning the airbag off. Very dangerous. Why haven't you put the pt cruiser on the airbag recall list?i bought the car new in 2002 and am,the sole owner.

A white powder substance is leaking from air bag.dealer replaced airbag and dashboard.the substance started leaking again.the manufacturer stated it was a reaction from paint on the plastic.the consumer gets ill from riding in vehicle.consumer experiences nausea/headaches, and sore throat when riding in the vehicle.the manufacturer will not tell the consumer what the powder was-replace air bag assembly.the consumer states that the windows slip down in the track by themselves and makes a squeaky/creaking noises when used-may still exist per invoice, and reinstall 2 rubber bumpers in glove box-had to order a new air bag module-second time.*scc

Airbag light comes on during tight right turns at speed.

I was involved in a single car, front end collision, in which i hit a concrete structure head on at approx 45 mph.the airbags, neither driver or passenger, deployed, resulting in my hitting my head.i feel this is a defect and surely a great enough force to deploy the airbags.dealer says it was simply that the sensors were not triggered.what more does it take to trigger the sensors?

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, another vehicle crashed into the passenger's side and the air bags failed to deploy. Horn and radio stopped working...i replaced the clock spring...and it started all over again after about a month. I have had to replace a radio and speakers because of the intermittent problem. It causes my radio display to "pop" in and out and when it goes out i have no horn. The problem started about a year after i bought the car in 03.

I purchased my 2002 pt cruiser with only 34,000 miles on odometer in january of 2006.within six (6) months, the airbag light came on for no reason.i paid $1,000.00 to have the airbag assembly replaced and once again within six months, the airbag light came on.i was told this time that it was the airbag sensors that needed to be replaced.

Wife was sitting in a line of traffic waiting at a light. Vehicle came from behind and hit her at approximately 40. M.p.h.car was thrown into car in front of her which was then thrown into car in front of them.breaking hood latch system, radiator, a/c cooler/, and bending hood up. Air bags never deployed. Wife sustained whiplash and cervical sprain, and had to be transported from scene by ambulance due to accident. Our car had in excess of 2500 dollars damage.

While sitting at a red light, i was rear-ended by a delaware cab (crown victoria); which continued to drive me into the car stopped in front of me and both of us into the pickup truck in front of her.it was a four car collision, with three of us being totally stopped when i was rear-ended.i contacted chrysler and inquired as to why the air bags did not deploy and was told "we need to offer you a settlement".chrysler had an "independent investigator" do an evaluation and has informed me that "we can not give you a copy of this report as it is a safety issue and if you want a copy you will have to sue us".my car was not running when the cab drove me into the chevrolet lumina in front of me.the officer that responded to the accident asked if i had a switch to turn off the air bag, which the car did not.when the officer requested us to move the cars out of the roadway, he told me to stay out of my car, while the other cars were moved because he was concerned the air bags would deploy.

Dt: the contact stated the driver's side and passenger's side air bags deployed while driving down the highway. There was no prior warning. Also , the right front brake had a loud popping and squealing noise, this caused the steering wheel to vibrate. The right front brake overheated, it turned the rim red hot. He could smell the brake dust from the right front brake. He contacted the dealer, they have repeatedly replaced the brakes, brake pads, disc caliper, and rotors. He was still having the same problem with the vehicle. Updated 12/7/2005.the battery had to be replaced at 14972 miles.

On the 28th of nov 2002 my wife was involved in an accident.she rearended a pickup truck and it was around 45mph. When she struck the vehicle her airbags never went off.now she hit the vehicle straight on and if i'm right anything above 25 or more the airbags should deploy.luckly my wife wasn't injured but she could have been badly injured.i called the company and all they told me was that we should have called then immediately but when something like this happens you don't think about it.i wanted to file a complaint on the defect airbags.the vehicle was repaired and chrysler said the should 've been notified so they could inspect the vehicle but the insurance company took the vehicle to the body shop right away and they started to repair it while my wife was at work.there was $5,400 in damage to the front end, basically it was completely replaced but the airbags never went off is what has me stumped. It's a 2002 pt cruiser

Consumer was involved in a frontal collision.upon impact, driver's air bag did not deploy, causing injury to driver.dealer has inspected vehicle. Consumer states that vehicle was totaled.

Theconsumer was driving on the freeway at 55 to 60 mph and hit a vehicle in front. The bumper came off but the airbags failed to deploy. Provide further details.

While driving 65 mph another vehicle merged in front of consumer's vehicle, resulting ina frontal collision. Upon impact, both air bags did not deploy. Driver sustained head and neck injuries, and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.the vehicle was towed to a body shop by the insurance company.

I'm not sure if my side airbag should have deployed or not. I was hit in an intersection on the front quarterpanel drivers side. The impact was over the front tire towards the front. I don't think the airbag would have helped any, but i just wanted to know if it should have deployed for safety reasons in the future. I would like to know under what conditions would my side airbag deploy. Thanks.

While driving at 35-40 mph, the vehicle was involved in a frontal collision.upon impact, the driver and passenger side air bags did not deploy.the driver sustained shoulder and chest injuries.*scc

Vehicle was involved in a side impact on passenger's side, causing passenger's air bag to deploy and drop through grove box, dealer and the manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Dt: the contact stated the driver'sside and passenger's side air bags deployed while driving down the highway. There was no prior warning. On july 10, 2003, my wife was returning home after donating blood. She passed out and the 2002 pt cruiser that she was driving hit a small pine tree with a glancing blow to the driver's side fender, and then hit a power pole head on. The vehicle struck the power pole hard enough to break the pole and bring the high voltage wires down across the top of the car. According to the police report, she was traveling approx. 30 to 35 mph when the impact occurred.the airbags did not deploy. Even though she was wearing her seat belt , her head snapped forward and hit something (i assume the rim of the steering wheel) which caused a bone-deep gash in ber forehead requiring 10 (ten) stitches to close.i contacted chrysler, and they sent an investigator to look at the car before repairs were begun. Their response was that "....the impact, (which did not involve the frame) did not create the longitudinal (front to back) deceleration necessary to deploy air bags.".in fact, the frame was bent. According to the body shop manager, the right frame rail was moved between 7 and 10 mm.my contention is that an impact sufficiently hard enough to break a power pole should have caused the air bags to depoly.i said that in a letter back to chrysler and have received no further communication from them.total cost to repair the damage to the pt cruiser was $9,147.92

Vehicle was involved in a 30 mph collision hitting a treeein which driver and passenger's front and side air bags did not deploy, cause unknown.*yd

I was driving ca. 20-25 mph out of a parking lot, and hit a yellow cement stop sign post while turning left. I did not see the obstacle before turning (blind spot?) and i crashed into it head-on. The airbags did not deploy.the damage didn't look too bad, but it turned out to be over $3,200 damage to the front end, including new radiator and new ac unit.my head hit the windshield very hard but the windshield didn't crack.i didn't go to the hospital but should have because i hit my head hard -- i self-treated with ice bags for 4-5 hours at a time for several days. I thought maybe i wasn't going fast enough for the airbags to deploy, but having seen all the other consumer complaints about this issue, i am convinced there is aproblem with the airbags. Please investigate before someone gets seriously hurt or worse. *la

Dt*: the contact stated while parked and not running, the vehicle was involved in a frontal impact from another vehicle who was traveling an unknown speed.none of the airbags deployed.the contact sustained minor injuries, and a police report was taken.the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted.

I was involved in a front end collision 1/8/03.my air bags did not deploy.i am now recovering from a fractured sternum injury.i have gotten no response as to why the bags didn't deploy...probably would not have been injured if they worked.

While traveling about 5mph on a major street and without prior warning another vehicle hitconsumer's vehicle from behind.upon impact, driver side air bag didn't deploy.

The vehicle severely pulled to the right, whichresulted in an accident. The driver side air bag deployed, and the module fell out also.

Possible airbag or electrical defect on 2002 pt cruiser touring edition.i was driving up the road in my 2002 cruiser with approximately 40,000 miles on it, which has not been involved in an accident, and the airbag light came on my dash.i have had my car in the shop several times and after approximately $800.00, my light is still on.the airbag assembly and airbag module have been replaced and it has not remedied the problem.

Side airbags did not deploy in severe side crash. *nlm

Vehicle was involved in a 30 mph collision hitting a treeein which driver and passenger's front and side air bags did not deploy, cause unknown.*yd

Windows and air conditioner failed. Car undriveable ,all curcitbreakers and fuses checked. This is a safety hazard. Almost passed out going a few miles. I can't drive it with out injury.

My lights shut off while driving. Not only did my headlights shut off but my dash board lights and the lights on my gear shift did as well. My doors will not lock as well.

Heated seats come on by them selfs and overheat can not turn them off unless you turn off car it gets so hot it can burn you .

There has been numerous problems with chrysler pt cruiser electrical systems, namely the multifunction control switch seems to overheat and cause an electrical short.this depletes the battery, and has led a number of pt cruiser owners to replace the multifunction control switch numerous times or remove the fuses for lights, such as the fog lights.chrysler knows that there is a systematic problem with their vehicle but are not willing to do anything to resolve the problem.information on such experiences can be found on the web at forums such as http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chrysler-pt-cruiser/tf81khbdldvt92ah2 or at ptcruiser.com.

The ignition key does not stay in when the engine is running.the mechanic who worked on the car in october said he has replaced several ignition switches in this model car.could it have been manufactured by the same company as those involved in the gm recall?this problem has existed for several years.

The safety recall for the instrument cluster failure was completed in november 2002. On 11 january 2004, the instrument cluster failed again.dealer reprogrammed the controller (again), leaving me to wonder if this is permanent 'fix' or is it one that i will need to constantly be worrying about? chrysler recall center provides no assurance. Dealer says, 'if it fails, bring it in again.' - not much assurance.* cb

Takata recall. I was driving down the highway and my headlights went out i pulled over and i didnt have door locks to unlock the doors. All the fuses are good. I was researching online and alot of pt cruisers are having the issue it seems that the connector for the fuse block goes bad i have been dealing with this for a few months now. I think its redundant that ypu have to pay 150-250 dollars every time this happens. When no one really has that kinda money

Parked 2002 pt cruiser in shopping center.upon return vehicle was completely dead.pushed to adjacent goodyear dealer (remained 3 days)said it needed a new battery, starter & #11 fuse.all replaced and when backing out of goodyear, vehicle died & #11 fuse again blew. Owner had old starter examined elsewhere and found it to be in perfect working order. Goodyear replaced old starter plus repaired battery ground cable.drove 45 miles to doctor and vehicle died when stopping in lot.tarzana goodyear came, replaced #11 fuse and drove to their garage.unable to detect any problem.owner drove vehicle home with no problem.wife drove vehicle to dentist & when pulling out of lot and in with flow of traffic, vehicle died.#11 fuse replaced and drove home.later took vehicle to crown chrysler in ventura, ca & signed contract for $100.00 bench fee for them tolocate problem.vehicle remained there"sixteen days" until crown refused to check any further until owner would sign contract to pay $500.00 for further diagnosis.crown said that it might need $700.00 power train control module.crown advised that once installed, if that was not the problem, they would not remove it & owner would incur $700.00 plus installation charge.vehicle was then brought to owner's residence where it remains garaged.please assist in this matter.......................thank you.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the high beam head lamps would illuminate randomly day or night. The contact stated that the failure occurred at least six times in one week. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that when the check engine light came on, the vehicle began to malfunction. The vehicle was also burning oil and leaking fuel excessively. The speedometer displayed that the speed was 70 mph while the vehicle was in the park position. When the contact tried to shift gears from reverse into the park position, she had to put the vehicle in drive and then reverse. The dealer stated that the input/output speed sensor, third gear ratio and the fuel pump mounting flange on the vehicle malfunctioned. The dealer also stated that nhtsa recall campaign number 02v215000, fuel system and recall campaign number 01v288000 for the electrical system; did not apply to her vin. The failure mileage was 85000 and the current mileage was 98100.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.whenever the vehicle was started, the lights would illuminate, but the engine would not turn over.the dealer stated that the starter needed to be replaced.the starter has been replaced three times within the same month, but the failure persists.the current mileage was 106,000 and failure mileage was 102,000.

Had problems with my 02 pt cruiser not starting for 7 years and went on line and found others were having the same problem.called chyrsler and told them they were going to fix and pay for problem.service manager said he knew what the problems was and notice chrysler was putting cheap parts on their vehicles.he upgraded the cables connecting to and from the battery and have not had this problem since.the cables were under volted and weren't able to charge the battery and i got stranded sometimes. Chrysler called dealer and had this work done at no expense to me.it's not the battery, alternator or the other connection i can't remember.it has been 3 months and i haven't had any problems since.please let your service manager know that it is the low voltage battery cables to these areas. Having problems starting, hesitation starting or wouldn't start at all happen after not driving the car sometimes for 2 days just after bringing it back to the dealer.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.the interior wiring on the instrument panel failed; therefore, the warning lights overheated and became inoperable. The dealer stated therenhtsa recall campaign number: 01v288000, electrical system: wiring: interior/under dash was related to the failure; yet, his vin was not included. The manufacturer also stated his vin was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 100,000.

My wife's car has had issues since we got the car. I have had the battery replaced and it is still not holding a charge. I found that while jump starting the car, you get sparks as you attach the cables. This is evidence of a short somewhere in the vehicle. The issues that i have found are nonfunctional interior lights, mirror controls, door locks, and radio. I have found recall information on vehicles with this same year, make, and model. Upon calling daimler chrysler i was informed that this vehicle was not involved in this recall. I ma having the same issues as vehicles in this recall.

For the past 4 months my car fog lights come on for no reason. Woke up in the morning and they where on and if they turn on while driving it seems to affect the radio now when i shut off the car i put turn signal on and it seems to make it stop.

10-18-2011i just bought my car last month (09-26-2011) and my control arms and bushing have already went bad. Now 2 nights ago (10-16-2011) my headlights stopped working. I took it into the dealership to have everything checked and was told that the wiring under the dash is messed up. I see that there are a lot of recalls for that happening to the 2002 pt cruisers and now the dealer i bought the car from will not fix it (even though i'm still within my 30 day warranty) i do not understand why i should have to come out of pocket to fix this problem. Also, the dealer i bought it from would not give me a carfax on the vehicle. Also, sold me the car with a recall already on it that was issued way back in 2004. (power steering pressure hose) that i was told could cause a fire under the hood.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the instrument cluster does not eliminate like other cars cluster supposed to eluminate. It,when the contact turns on the headlights the instrument cluster lights turn on but really u can hardly see the speedometer or the gauges which is dangerous. On 6/09/11 while driving home the instrument cluster lights when out i could see anything,my headlights and backlights stop working and also my power door locks are not working either all this happen on my way home around 7:30pm and i had to slow down to make it safe home..when i got home my power locks were not working when i went to lock the vehicle.

The instrument cluster on my 2002 pt cruiser stopped working.the dome light and the warning signals for leaving the headlights on or the keys in the ignition are also not working.although some 2002 cruisers were recalled for an instrument panel failure, the dealer (fitzgerald automall in gaithersburg, md) told me that my car is not covered.the dealer said there was a failure somewhere in the instrument cluster that it would not repair and offered to replace the entire cluster.i believe that this type of defect should be the subject of a recall or repaired by chrysler at its expense.

I got the in january 2014 and i only had it for two weeks and shad to go in the shop and i told them that i was diagnosis with lung cancer and i have to get back and forward to my treatments and i need a reliable car and while i was driving it the tire rod went the first time then the other side of the tire rod went now it's the electricity system is acting it and since i had this car it been in the shop every month and it don't make sense that i have to pay a car note and pay to fits it too i have miss a lots of treatments will all please help me because i hear everybody talk about helping cancer survivors but only thing that i see is i am been hurt first it's my car now the city is trying to take my house that my mother left me please help me also you can contact me at [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Ok maybe 4th time is a charm on trying to get pt cruiser off road. I had a fire in this vehicle due to overheating which was reported but dumb me put it out and replaced grill and radiator and had to take seperate loan out for $2500 in repairs and now vehicle won't start and now being told is computer well that explains why when we were trying to get out of car when was on fire the door locks didn't won't to work first time. The car is a 2002 with 100,000 miles on it and i have already put new tires on it and battery and had all these repairs done trying to save the car because i am a single mom on disability maybe since chrysler is under investigation for injuries and deaths not being reported you can add me because i was burned during the fire trying to put out. I have forwarded every single documentation of every incident not only to chrysler but nhtsa and now want me to replace a computer at $1300 this car is dangerous and have been told by everyone who has examined car it is serious but i guess if me or my son had died in car then maybe something would have been done. I have made my payments and paid full coverage insurance for 6 months while all this has been going on and only was able to drive car for a month. The vehicle is at chrysler dodge in columbia,tn and phone number is 1-931-380-0326. I have 9 tow bills and nobody cares that me or my son could have lost our lives!

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.when the turn signals were activated, the fog lights could have caused a fire in the wiring panel of the vehicle.the contact wrote a letter to the manufacturer, but they stated that nothing could be done.the current mileage was 86,663 and failure mileage was 45,000. Updated 11/24/08 when the turn signals were used, the fog lights automatically activated and would not go out for quite some time. Eventually, the fog lights stopped working.updated 11/26/08.

I had just put fuel in my car and was driving across a parking lot. I proceeded to park my car and noticed smoke rising out of my steering wheel anda burning smell. My lower set of lights ( fog lights) had turned on by themselves, which is odd since they haven't been working for at least two years. In order to stop the smokingin the steering wheel, i had to remove fuse #8. Same set of lights have turned on before a few years back draining my battery since i couldn't turn them off with their switch. In addition, my headlights turn off automatically at random while i'm driving and my clock lights go out frequently. Headlights have gone out on me 5 times over the past 3 years. I try not to drive much at night as a result.

There is a widespread problem with the chrysler pt cruiser wherein the multi-function switch on the column malfunctioned, causing the fog lights to come unexpectedly, completely draining the battery .this problemhas been going on for sometime and chrysler refused to correct it, which would appear to havebeen caused by defective parts. The repair charge wa s upwards of $200.

I own a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. This is the sixth time that the instrument panel has ceased to display any information. That is, i can not see the speed, tach, fuel gauge, or any safety warnings. Each time i take it to the repair shop, they can not find any thing wrong. When they reconnect it, i begins to work.

Dashboard cracked in center from front window to inside edge, running across vent, which has falling into dash in pieces; also frequently "shorts out" and radio, inside lights, dash lights, all go out making night driving dangerous.

Multi function switch, lights just quit working, very dangerous. I have never had a car were something as basic as the headlights quit working. All lights failed, interior, headlights, dash lights, tail lights.

Fog lights won't turn off, stayed on long enough to run down battery. Not good for single elderly woman volunteer stuck in a parking lot across town. Understand the problem has been reported in many, many vehicles for at least 10 years. Did i miss a recall? i'm the original owner. Where in the world will i find a multifunction switch and someone to install it? will the company cover the cost? are they on a fixed income?

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated the vehicle keyless entry system, fog light indicator, and the interior light failed. The contact did not disable the fog light switch in order to keep them from illuminating, and if the fog light was disabled it would cause the instrumental panel to fail.the vehicle will be taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and the current mileage was 70,000.

My check engine light goes off and on. Crankshaft and camshaft sensors were reading as the issue according to the odometer code system.. My car shuts off at anytime even while driving in the middle of the road. My battery terminal seems to be weak possibly having shortage moments from time to time. My vehichle will pull one way or the other. My breaks feel like there going to give out or are brand knew . My vehichle makes a noise as if the front cv axels or ball joints need to be greased. My wiring and engine is my main concern. My ac doesn't work my radiator seal has been replaced my car will make a guzzling noice due to the coolant . The list goes on. I bought my vehichle approx. 4months ago. The issues have progressed over the past month.

Two major complaints: 1. I have been stranded on 3 occasions in deserted parking spots - with my car just not starting - the ignition will not work and there was a complete electrical failure / discharge. Road side assistance we called on each occasion and only on charging the battery would the car start. The first instance happened when the car was only 3 months old (its a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser, 4 cyl non turbo , automatic - bought in march 2003) - the second similar instance was 3 months later and the last one was a few weeks back. I have taken the car repeatedly to the dealership and they cannot find anything wrong with the battery or electrical system but they keep saying that maybe something is drawing extra power. They refuse to replace the vehicle or take any further action. 2. I read about the recall notice released in june 2004. I took my car to the dealership and they refused to rectify the problem saying that they had not received any confirmation from chrysler headquarters. I called up chrysler and i was told that i would receive a letter in the mail authorizing the recall. Its been a month and the letter has not been received - the chrysler company does not return calls and on listening to my problems says i will receive a letter in the mail. The dealership will not touch my car unless i have a letter - what does chrysler want us to do -they sell us inferior products and now do they want us to burn !! please help and take action against this company before any more lives are lost.*la

Fog lights won't turn off had to pull the fuse, it's a 2002 pt cruiser. Same as alot of people are having the same problem. Just got the cruiser used don't thing it's right for me to have it fixed, so many complaints unbelievable, don't get it deal should fix it for free don't need a fire.thanks

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled, a warning light illuminated, and an alarm sounded. The failure recurred ten times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the alarm system needed to be reset. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

Found 2002 pt cruiser with dead battery on occasion, no consistency. Replaced battery (7.75 years old, 90k miles) after 3rd instance over 2 months, issue resolved for about 2 weeks.car parked in hot parking lot, fog lights were dim when approaching car.car would not turn over to start, had it jumped.upon returning home, went to turn off car, fog lights would not turn off.fiddling with light switch would make them go off temporarily, then right back on.found turning left blinker in on position kept fogs off.researching issue, found the following forum: http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chrysler-pt-cruiser/tf81khbdldvt92ah2where hundreds of people have experienced the same issue.waiting to hear from chrysler on replacement part, as all online sources say it is back ordered 30-60 days.

The electronic door locks on my 2002 pt cruiser limited started operating by themselves two years ago.i have had this car since it was new andhad the multifunction turn signal switch replaced about 3 years ago. The door lock problem sometimes occurs when you are driving the car at low speed but it will also occur when the car is setting in the garage with the key out of the ignition.the doors will lock and unlock several times on their own while driving or without anyone being in the car or touching the remote keyless entry system.this can present problems if the car is locked and in a public parking lot.the care sometimes will unlock on its own.you can also be locked out of the car if you don't take your keys with you when exiting the car.this seems to happen more during hot summer weather than during cooler winter months.i have also noted that the external temperature gauge and compass mounted above the front window will also go out during hot weather.when the car cools down with the air conditioner on, the external temperature gauge will start operating again.i have taken the car to the dealer three times to be fixed.the first time they charged to diagnose the problem and said nothing was wrong, the second time they said the battery cable was corroded and need replaced at $300 and it needed a new battery.after this work, i drove it around the block and the door locks started going wild again.so i went back to the service manager and he said they would have to have the car for several days and they would get the district service manager on the phone to see if he might be able to help them.at that point we went into winter and it was ok.it is doing it again this spring so i will try again.

The problem i am having started about 2 months ago, my battery was suddenly drained and i had no idea why. I had to buy a new battery for about $125.when my fog light indicator began to flicker on and off on its own. I'd just press the end of turn signal arm inward towards the steering column and the indicator light went off.gradually, the pressing process did not work anymore and i discovered that shutting off the car with the left hand turn signal pressed down, at least temporarily solved the problem (so i could do some research on its solution). Not knowing what to do, i brought it into the dealer and for $65 they diagnosed it at a need to replace the multifunction switch which they said required the pulling of steering wheel and over $600 more to fix. I opted out on that, since car has 112,000 miles on it. Then, with a week of very hot 90 degree temperatures, , i found that brand new battery totally drained and began reading the internet posts of the possibility of pulling the fuse. Of course being a usa car, the manual didn't identify the fuse for the fog lamps in the "under the hood" fuse box. It seems that the heat allows the fog lamps to still turn on when the left hand signal arm is pressed downwards.going further, i found that fuse #8 in the interior dashboard fuse box could be pulled and should solve the problem without further repair. I find it very interesting that chrysler does not even show you a sketch of the interior fuse box in their owners manual.this approach does mean that the manufacturer of the vehicle is not allowing the buyer (me) to fully enjoy all the features of the vehicle!seems to me that chrysler corporation has not recalled the defective cars on purpose and needs to have a debacle like toyota had before they will do the right thing and fix a bad design. .

Multi-function switch (that controls the fog lamp) shorted out, causing the lights to be on no matter what position the switch was turned to. I was forced to remove the fog lamp fuse; chrysler has several hundred or more on backorder, i've been told it may be 6 months to a year before i can get a replacement.

Today 06/09/11. Driving home around 7:30 pm my cluster went out couldn't see the speed or rpm or any other gauges, and my headlights and backlights stop working together with my power doorlocks. I had to slow down or stop and take my time going home.

Horn and radio stopped working...i replaced the clock spring...and it started all over again after about a month. I have had to replace a radio and speakers because of the intermittent problem. It causes my radio display to "pop" in and out and when it goes out i have no horn. The problem started about a year after i bought the car in 03.

Fog lights came on by themselves while parked with no key in ignition (while at work). Common issue found all over the internet. Cause is a defective multi-function switch. Smelled a burning smell. Repair shop was unable to find any problems through diagnostics which was before the car had been seen during the day with it's running lights on. That drained the battery and required a jump start. Happened several times. Due to overwhelming number of complaints listed throughout the internet for this same issue we feel a recall should be issued as this is a fire hazard. The 15 amp fuse (number 8 on interior fuse panel) never blew but was discolored from heat.

I unlocked my car doors with remote, and drove to the store, it was dark out soi had my head lights on. When i came out of the store and tried to unlock my car, it would not work. So i manually unlocked the doors with my key. It was very cold weather at that time and my heater would not work as well then i turned on my car to go home, and my lights would not come on. And so i was towed home. The next day i took it in to a chrysler repair shop and they did a quick check on it and said that it might be the electrical and they would have to go through the entire electrical to find the problem. They checked everything out without tearing the entire car apart and said that they could not find a problem with it. There went $100.00 of my money to find out that they could not find the problem. I don't know what else to do to get the car repaired with out having to spend $1,000.00 plus.... Which is a quote by the chrysler repair. I have not been able to drive my car at night, due to no lights and now that we have hot 90 to 101 degree weather, i can not drive my car during this period of time due to not being able to use the air conditioner or to roll my windows down. I have spent over $3,000.00 in repairs for my car and i have only had it for just two years. There is one thing after another with my car, the problems are having to replace parts and sometimes having to replace those same parts a year later when they have just ran out of the warranties. I have service recordsfor all of these problems and it is almost 2 inches thick. I am on disability and it took me over a year to save the enough money to buy this car and i have no more money to fix it again... And i have to take it through deq here in oregon and it will not pass their test due to exhaustion problems with the emissions leaking as well.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.the contact was driving 25 mph when the interior instrument panel lights failed.the contact did not take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection or repair.the referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 01v288000 (electrical system:wiring:interior/under dash) and called the manufacturer.the manufacturer informed the contact that the vin was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 120,000.

Failure of multifunction switch: initially the fog lights would come on when the turn signal was engaged. This first began in approximately 11/2008. Initially this happened only occasionally, but became more frequent. Now the fog lights always remain illuminated, even when the car is turned off/parked. This required that i remove the fuse controlling the fog lights so that the battery would not be drained. After researching on many different message boards, it became apparent that this is a very frequent problem with pt cruisers. Not only is it annoying, but it is also a potential fire (electrical) hazard. I feel i recall is warranted.

Multi-switch fails causing the fog lights to come on when car is off or randomly when driving.plastic part inside switch mechanism holding metal contact from connecting two terminals overheats and melts thus becomes shorter and cannot keep the contact away from the terminals.dealer told me when i bought the car that i should not use the fog lights unless needed and i did as told.after two batteries and many attempts to get chrysler to fix the problem they admitted was happening on all pt cruisers sold by my dealer, i had to purchase and install a new multi-function switch assembly.i have the original an can send if wished.

Complete failure of everything on the dashboard, i.e. Speedometer, gas gauge, cooling, odometer.no dashboard lights, no interior lights.fog lights stay on unless you turn on your turn signal after turning off the car.this has been discussed as a problem that has occurred many times on the sites that i have visited.the car is a 2002 pt cruiser, and there was a recall for the instrument cluster microprocessor to be malfunctioning causing the problems described above, however my pt was not covered under that recall.

Optima battery innewer vehicle year is leakingacid, andone can smell toxic fumes.

Trouble with multifunction control switch for pt cruiser headlights. The fog lights on the pt cruiser illuminated intermittently without operator interface or fail to shut off when multifunction switch is operated. This caused battery to fail. No audible indication that lights remained on.

Vehicle has been to two separate dealers for poor fuel mileage.vehicle is getting less than 15 miles per gallon, when the advertised mpg is between 19 and 27.vehicle has a foul odor.both dealers claimed that the computer did not store any codes and that it was running within specifications.

Car won't start at times.had to jump it then it started.something draining the battery if car sits for a day or two.changed battery 3 times, still having problem.bought car brand new, dealer still can't find the problem.car not reliable.started having problems not long after i bought it. My car has decided to "sometimes" not start at the end of the day.it runs just fine in the morning, but then on my return trip home, you turn the key and nothing.the lights go on, but no ignition, no sound of the engine turning over.three battery replacements, and that is not the problem.called chrysler personally as directed by a website that sited hundreds of complaints over this exact same problem, but they denied knowledge of any such complaint.complaints date back to 2002.tried having our trusted mechanic look at it, but since he can't recreate the problem, he is at a loss.car has 100k miles and ran fine up until the start of summer.

You can remove the key from the ignition switch in any of the positions.also, you can move the gear shift and the car will move. There is no incident date. It's been that way since i bought it new.

Came out to car after work to go home. The car wouldn't start, the ignition would turn on, but the engine wouldn't turn over. I turned the ignition on-off-on to get any trouble codes and when i took the key out afterwards the "key in ignition chime" sounded when i opened the door after i had already removed the key. I put the key back in the ignition and tried to start the car again, but the ignition wouldn't even turn on, there was no discernble click as i turned the key in the ignition at all. I had the car towed to the dealership and they told me i need to have the entire steering column replaced and that it wasn't covered under the daimler chrysler service contract i had purchased when i got the car new.

I own a 2002 pt cruiser, which was subject to a recall concerning the dash cluster gauges. Gauges failed on me causing me to run out of fuel on i-285 in atlanta. Took vehcile in for recall reprograming of the dash clusters when the vehicle had 4000 miles on the odometer. This failure occurred at 24000 miles. I have been waiting over two weeks for the dealer to obtain the part needed to fix the problem. Today i was told that the part has to be "burned" into the dash order to fix the problem. Moreover, the service manager wayne hammond (770-216-9300) stated that he had a number of consurmers with the same problem.i have been riding around with a gas can in my vehicle for fear of running out; without dash or interior lights or gauges.

The multifuction turn signal switch allows stops working andfog lights stay on making the battery run down and the only immediate remedy is to disconnect the fog lights. This part has failed three times on my pt cruiser.

My 2002 pt cruiser caught fire and the dealer and the manufacturer say too bad.the car had two recalls one which was fixed and one which they never notified me of.

The multifunction turn signal switch allows stops working and fog lights stay on making the battery run down and the only immediate remedy is to disconnect the fog lights, i pulled the fuse. I have read many complaints about this on the internet, it is a big problem.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the dashboard exhibited a long crack which originated on the front driver's side windshield that crossed over the dashboard vent and extended to the instrument panel. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Nhtsarecall 01v288000. Daimler/chrysler issued an instrument cluster recall. This vehicle was not included in the recall due to vinalthough it was experiencing the same problem as mentioned in the recall.

From the first month that i purchased my vehicle the engine light has been on more than off. I read the owners manual and it said that it was a vacuum issue and it would correct itself.the dealership charged me to diagnose and to fix it but now i see that there was a nhtsa 01v288000 on a cluster panel issue. Why was i charged for something that a dealership should check for to see if it is a known defect?

Dashboard cracked in 2 locations. Potential safety hazard if wires are exposed. Could potentially ruin cables for headlights, break lights and turning signals

Fog light switch is faulty.this switch leaves the lights on at all times which drains battery and leaves the driver stranded.this problem has been documented in hundreds of pt cruisers.http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chrysler-pt-cruiser/tf81khbdldvt92ah2.

Just paid for an issue with a vehicle that was addressed by nhtsa recall # 01v288000, back in 9/01.(the vehicle was returned to the selling dealer at that time, for the recall.now, the exact problem explained in the recall happened to the car, and the dealer charged for the repair, claiming a hard wiring issue that he refused to show me.

I have a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser and have noticed the fog indicator light on the dash is lit.when i looked in the front indeed the lights were on.the switch was off but the lights were still on.i noticed a smell of smoke in the car and it drained my battery to zero volts.the auto alarm also seems to engage for no reason.after checking the web i found out that this is quite a big problem and some people have actually had fires and smoke from under the dashboard.it would appear that there is a short in the switch.the problem is that the fog lights have never been used so the switch cannot be worn out.

Nhtsa recll#01v28800/ manufacturer'srecall 994. Got recall, and took vehicle into dealer be repaired. Dealer indicated recall could not be done because program has not been installed on computer.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While parked at a gas station, the vehicle overheated and the contact noticed coolant bubbling on the reservoir. The contact also stated that the cooling fan was not activating. The dealer stated that piston number two failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

As i was driving down the highway my car started to overheat so i pulled over and let it cool down. After adding more coolant to it i started to drive it home only to have it start to overheat again, so parked it at a nearby school and left it over night. Upon getting it the next morning it started right up and i drove it home, when i went to go start it again it wouldn't start. After calling my mechanic and having him look at it he informed me that there was water in the exhaust and i would have to get a new motor. After reading all the complaints on here for the same or similar thing, it makes me wonder why there hasn't been a recall on these systems in this particular car?

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While driving at 30 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate severely. In addition, the vehicle overheated without warning. The contact noticed fumes and smoke coming from the hood. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Ok this is my 3rd complaint on this vehicle the first problem was overheating and yes caught fire after a month of that everytime temperature gauge would rise i pulled car over and had towed i have 7 tow bills on that well last time caught fire was able to put out had to replace radiator, hoses, had a cracked head, fan, fan sensor and thermostat and grill that was $2000 for all that. I got car back and now have had back for a month and car won't start had battery changed out,had 25 point inspection done and now saying alarm system is triggering something or possibly computer going bad. This is a 2002 with only 100,000 miles on it. I owe $2300 to chase for purchase then have 2nd lien because of all these other problems of $2000. I bought the car back in 4/2013 and had to have all recalls done on it and i have reported all this before and chrysler refuses to admit it is a lemon. I have been told by dealer and 2 other mechanics this car is not safe and should not be on road. I am a single mom with ms and on disability and now scared to drive car. The car is parked and i am still making payments on something i can't drive. I do know car was assembled in mexico and don't know if a siesta was taken during my car or not. I am told not to drive car it is a hazard and chrysler after fire should have taken car back but they refused a fire and was me and my son 2 lives could have been lost. I want car taken back by chrysler and i want payoff on loan of $3000.00 by chrysler this car won't be driven. I have been very cooperative reporting everything but when mine and my son's life is at risk that is enough! if you do research the overheating and electrical has been a serious problem and i would think that a fire would get you to make chrysler take these cars back.

While driving the vehicle i could begin to smell a strong odor of gas them almost like the smell of plastic melting and the vehicle engine started running hot temperature so i immediately turned off the engine as i pulled over to the side of the road and as i stepped out of the car aflame began under the hood and ended up burning my entire engine. Fire department had to come and extinguish the car.

Well maintain pt cruiser blew head gasket going down interstate at 70mph.caused engine to over heat. Causing the engine to spray boiling water from the water overflow tank back on to the windshield.car had right at 32,550 miles on it. The spraying water and steam could have caused the driver to lose control and crash.

Vehicle pulled out of business complex turn in left about a car lengths away from me when he pulled out..attempted to stop but vehicle was too close. No air bags deployed.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the heater had become inoperable. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who ran a diagnostic test and advised the contact that the head gasket, timing belt and water pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and the contact filed a complaint. No other assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Engine cradle, or front subframe, is rusted to the point i've stopped driving the car.i'm in the process of finding a replacement but chrysler no longer makes the part!nothing has happened to this point because of my caution but the front end was starting to make popping noises when i started out from a dead stop.the problem is on the front passenger side.i understand from reading articles, many other pts have this same problem.for years, i have tried to prime and spray oil on the part to extend it's life.time has come....

Driving at 35mph.suddenly the engine shut off.the car coasted/rolled down-hill for 1.5 blocks.i stopped at the first red light.the car would not re-start.it began to crank but would never turn the engine over.checked the oil stick and there was no (zero) oil on the stick. We added 4 quarts of oil.the oil did not leak out of the car.we let the engine cool and tried to start the car.it would not start, it cranked again but didn't turn over.i had the car towed to the mechanic shop.

Ok i am so upset i bought this car 2 years ago it is a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser with a back check from my disability cause i had to have something low to the ground to get in and out of. I have had nothing but problems and i can't afford anymore on this car this is like a brand new car with such low miles i can't get to therapy, doctor's appointments and when you go on all these sights it is the same report overheating for model tears 2001-2005. I have had to take out a loan to have a radiator installed, sensor for fan, thermostat, fan, hoses and it still overheats and now being told that it is a cracked head gasket now tell me how the couple of times it did overheat and was immediately turned off and towed it got into this bad of shape and why so many cruisers have the overheating problems? i am a single mom on disability with no other income and now have to make payments on a car i can't drive. I even as soon as got car had the timing belt changed and whatever else needed for near future just so didn't have that expense later on. I really appreciate the fact i can't go anywhere to necessary appointments for my disability and paying on a car for repairs and now completely down and won't be fixed have been quoted a thousand dollars and already have a loan out for $700 because of other repairs not to mention have loan when bought the car paying on! this isn't right and trust me have plenty of others who can give you their stories! i have a son who will graduate next year only car we have and now he can't go to college! there have been several of them and mine did but thank god did have some bottled water in the car start a small fire in the front this is serious!

Ok this is the 10th complaint filed on this vehicle both by myself and mechanics who have worked on it in last 6 months. My vehicle caught fire beside my house this morning at 6am. Nobody in car and the only thing that alerted me was when my dogs went out and were barking like crazy. I will have the fire investigator report on monday or tuesday. I suggest chrysler who has all the same complaints as you do pay attention when you are told a car is unsafe. I could have lost everything this morning so chrysler better be glad was just car. I am still shaking and i am a single disabled mom thank god fire department got here when they did. I want answers!

2002 chrysler pt cruiser.consumer writes in regards to no instrument panel illumination, fuel and oil leaks, brake warning lights comes when applying brakes, inoperative windshield wiper switch.the consumer stated the instrument panel was completely dark and he was unable to see the gauges at night. Drove the vehicle 12 miles to get home. (the vehicle was stationary)immediately turning off engine after making it home. Power steering fluid leakage (big leak) from hose and smoke smell from under hood. (engine looks chard)

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the vehicle overheated constantly and the air conditioning was blowing hot air. The contact waited for the temperature on the vehicle to cool off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the open circuit fan motor. The failure recurred and the radiator exploded. The failure resulted in two replacements of the radiator fan belt assembly and a repair to the cooling fan ground.the approximate current mileage was 100,600. The failure mileage was 37,678.

Our pt cruiser overheated one day after my wife had left work, thankfully she made it home before it got worse.i have replaced all components known to cause overheating problems such as thermostat, radiator, spark plugs and wires, water heater, flushed the block out, even changed the temp sensor.i have also checked all the hoses and gave it an oil change and yet it still over heats.i have researched this problem online and have found that thousands of people are having the same issue.

Car has been overheating when ac is put on. Overheating while idling sometimes. I have spent over $2000 trying to fix it. It's not head gasket or heads according to 2 shops. I called chrysler, they said no complaints about cooling system have ever been reported. I filed a complaint. Shops have changed everything and can not find the problem. Check engine light stays on even after everything has been replaced. There should be a recall!!

Subframe cradle failure with crack through mounting. Dealer says "seen before" not under recall or investigation. Repair shop "has seen several with similar failure" some have resulted in suspension failure and accidents. Why is this not the subject of a recall? no one killed yet? repair to cost $1,400.00.updated 11/09/15*lj

The motor mount needs to be replaced for the 3rd time!

The ignition key does not stay in when the engine is running.the mechanic who worked on the car in october said he has replaced several ignition switches in this model car.could it have been manufactured by the same company as those involved in the gm recall?this problem has existed for several years.

Shortly after the odometer reached 500 miles, the engine began idling roughly and missing.concern about engine failure causing accident.returned to 2 separate dealers.both stated the computer showed no problem, but service reps admitted having other complaints.both noted chrysler refused to acknowledge any problem.

Www.ptcruiserproblems.commy pt cruiser consumes oil at the rate of a quart or more every thousand miles. After several failed repair attempts ferman reacquired it from him, replacing it with a new one from the lot. I purchased my 2002 pt cruiser touring limited on 5/20/2002 with only 4,780 miles from:ferman automotive http://www.fermanauto.com.my pt cruiser excessive oil consumption problem was discovered about the time of the first oil change. It consumed about one quart of oil every 500 miles. The first actual attempt at repair ferman made was to replace the valve cover gasket, this failed.second repair attempt was replacing the engine they told me. They only replaced the short block, and this also failed.i sent a vehicle defect notification to the manufacture and one to the state to start the lemon law process. Chrysler corporate office sent the regional lead technician to oversee the last repair attempt. Ferman tore down the engine and informed me that they found nine bad valve seals. Ferman replaced the entire head. They also replaced the valve cover, there is a known issue.some 2001 pt cruisers have a defective valve cover that causes the pcv valve to suck in oil. I drove about 370 miles and checked the oil to find it consumed a quart of oil!there is also a secondary issue with the a/c. The a/c has a persistent mildew odor that the dealer has not resolved. They have treated the a/c with an anti-mildew agent several times yet it still returns. I and many others suffer with trying to resolve the mildew odor problem also.i am currently still performing another oil consumption test. The oil consumption has varied only slightly and still continues. I have contacted an attorney and i am working with him to hopefully resolve this soon. Chrysler stated they will replace or purchase my vehicle back from me, if the oil consumption continues. Please contact me.www.ptcruiserproblems.com [email protected]

Fire in engine department.

May 17, 2003 was the most recent episode.the car has been in for service 5 times for overheating.they've been unable to satisfactorily fix the problem or admit it's a defect.i've lodged complaints with chrysler corporate, but they refuse to replace the vehicle.the only resolution they're willing to offer is extended coverage, which won't keep my car from overheating every time i attempt a trip longer than 30 minutes.

2002 pt cruiser, regularly maintained and with 50, 000 miles on it currently had an episode of overheating. When checked, one of the soft plugs (freeze plugs) had rusted through and all the coolant had leaked out. Plug was replaced, correct coolant put in, ran fine for 2 weeks. Overheated again, stopped driving it and had the radiator flushed and new cap installed. Driving home (30 minutes) overheated worse than before flush and new cap. New mechanic says needs a new radiator (leaking and clogged) and the #1 cylinder has water in it so the head must be replaced. The mechanic said this is the 2nd 2002 they've seen in 2 weeks, and he's done 5 others this year. And this is not a large city - and only one mechanic. May forums seems to be filling with messages about this overheating issue and the warping of the aluminum heads. Poorly designed and out of warranty?

202 pt cruiser - engine fire - car totalled - reported to chrysler and got a letter saying they were checking into it - notified the general manager at the dealership - notified the service manager at the dealership - tried to chrysler several times by e-mail, fax and phone - as of today i am still waiting to hear from them.saw an article in the sac bee this weekend about other engine fires - want to report this one - want chrysler to make this right - please help.i have a fire department report and pictures.thanks, wendy donom.

2002 pt cruiser, was serviced about 3-4 mos prior, running fine, all of a sudden smoke was coming out of the inside of the car vents, i pulled over when i exit the car, i saw smoke and heard something ignite in the hood.there was no warning of anything was wrong with the car, there were no warning lights, there was no stalling of the car, nothing.

Driving down highway oil light came on and the car began to slow down, had to pull over. When checking under the hood there was oil on the cap. Just had an oil change a couple of days ago, car had been running fine.....before this incident my power steering fluid was leaking, took my car to the dealership because there was a recall dealing with the power steering and the hose, they said that it was something else. I took my car to another person he put my car on the lift and there it was fluid leaking from the hose something that should have been fixed by the dealer but wasn't.

Bought a 2002 pt cruise new. Before the 3 year warranty ran out the water pump had to be replaced and at the 36,000 mark the head gasket had to be replaced.now at just over 60,000 the water pump again had to be replaced.now i noticed it is starting to run on the hot side.i am so afraid it is the head gasket again.

We purchased a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser with a 4 cylinder engine.after we had it a few month the check engine light came on.we were told it was just needing to be reset.in november of 2007 we took it to puckett dodge in south boston, va for the check engine light and no power.we were told it was the exhaust valve on cylinder #3.we paid them 1700+ to fix it and since january it has been coding on the obd cylinder mis fire on #3.we took it back yesterday and since the miles were over the warranty we would need to pay to have this problem fixed again.we are both retired and just don't have the money to fix a recurring problem that chrysler should have done right the fist time.maybe the dealership did all they could do and it is just a bad engine but we don't have the time nor the money to help them solve this before it becomes and epidemic.

Ptcruiser overheating at idle.no repairs help.

Premature water pump and timing chain failure 2002 pt cruiser.

Every time i unplug my battery it takes some hours of driving before the fan comes back on and that causes overheating by the time the car's fan start working again. When it over heat it boils the coolant and i would have to put the heater on full blast in order to suppress the overheating. And the power steering hose is on part of the radiator that makes it melt when the coolant gets too hot.

My car overheats just when going slow changed radiator cap thermostat cleaned radiator still overheats.

Can was due for inspection the check engine light was on the car failed for emissions but the code that was given was for a power steering sector shortly after that on my way to work the car just stopped running as i was driving down the road i pulled over try a few times to start it but it would not start had the car towed to a garage i told that it was the timing belt which i had replaced 2 weeks later drove car for about 30 or 35 mins when i shut the car off i heard the water in the engine boiling there was not warning lights or anything to show that the car was over heated i had to have the car towed again and have not been able to drive it and will not drive it until i cae see about having it repaired again this it getting to be very expensive and is costing me time at work because im a one car owner living in a rural area with not many transportation options.

- the contact has a 2002 pt cruiser.the contact's pt cruiser stalled while driving 45 miles an hour. There were no indicator or service lights. The contact checked the vehicle for leaks and the hoses for damage.she did not smell any fluids and no visible damage was apparent. The dealer informed the contact today that the fuel pump is in the transmission and it was damaged.the mileage at the time of the incident is 40,000.the contact is not the original owner of the vehicle.

I was driving my 2002 pt cruiser, i was stopped and noticed flames coming from under the hood. I got out and within a minute the car was fully engulfed. The car was completely destroyed. I have pictures of the car after the damage.

The car began repeatedly overheating requiring ac to be turned off. The cooling fan has ceased working and an entire assemble needed to be purchased. In discussing this with two separate garages, they indicated this was a common problem that they see frequently and should have been a subject of recall.

Cracking dashboard and the cooling fan assembly has failed.

Duringan inspection, the dealership informed the consumer that the head gasket had failed.the problem was not resolved.*sc

Consumer advised the engine is consuming excessive amounts of oil during normal operation.within 1k miles consumed 1.5 quarts and within 3k miles consumed 2.5-3 quarts.consumer is concerned that engine may seize while driving due to excessive consumption.dealer advised consumer vehicle has no oil leaks and that consumption is normal.ts *jg

When pulling dip stick there was no oil, vehicle was brand new, within 326 mile a quart of oil was gone.please provide any further information.

Upon parking the vehicle engine exploded, burning the vehicle completely. There were no injuries. There is an investigation which is posted on nhtsa website regarding the engine.pe04028_cat

There are many others struggling with their chrysler dealers on this same issue. *nlm

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.the contact stated that the steering wheel vibrated and she heard a rattling sound coming from underneath the vehicle while it was stationary.she felt that a failed motor mount caused the failure.as of november 8, 2007, the dealer had not completed an inspection.the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 85,000. Onsep30, 2002 and jan 31,2003, the bottom motor mount broke on our 2002chrysler pt cruiser. On oct 9, 2003, the bottom and upper motor mounts failed causing major damage to the engine compartment.

My 2002 pt cruiser has been maintained properly, including oil changes, for the entire time that i have owned it.in spite of this, it has developed engine problems that appear to be related to the forming of sludge in the engine.the oil consumption on the car has been approximately a quart per 1000 miles ever since the 36000 mile service.i feel that there is some inherent design problem that has led to the premature wearing out of the engine and the loss of power in this automobile.i think that this is unacceptable, regardless of the mileage, in the space of 4 years time.

I had a very alarming incident on january 23, 2006. After filling the fuel tank and traveling approximately 20 miles i smelled a strong gasoline odor. I stopped the vehicle and looked to be sure the fuel cap was in place. It was so i attempted to re-start the engine. After several attempts the engine started but ran quite roughly. I again stopped the engine to check the source of the gasoline odor. When i looked at the rear of the vehicle gasoline was running over the edge of the fuel tank shield. I decided that the vehicle should not be started again because of the risk of fire or explosion.i had to have the vehicle towed to the dealers service center.i was told the fuel line was broken.i asked that the fuel line be saved for me.i have it and it is broken on the end.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated the horn on the vehicle has stopped working. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the air bag needed to be replaced in the vehicle in order to get the horn to work. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 51,000.rl

I kept smelling this stench odor in my car, it appeared to be coming from the air conditioner. I though maybe either a cat or baby squirral got up in the engine & died. Could not find anything, so we took it to the dealer, since we could only smell it when we turned on the fan. The dealer in tampa knew right away what the problem was, said mold was growing in the air vents, and flushed a chemical in there to kill the mold. That only temporarily solved the problem, so i took it to a different dealer, closer to my home. Told them to fix the problem, not just mask it with chemicals. They claimed the car was coming from something other than the air conditioner & air vents, and refused to fix it. I called the chrysler ho, and they sided with the dealership.

I was driving down the street and smoke started coming out of my air conditioner vents.i pulled over and opened my hood. The smoke was coming from the vent right below the passenger side of windshield in the engine compartment.i called 911 and the car burnt before the fire dept could get there.they were a block away. Chrysler chose to do nothing.*la

When air conditioner is used a bad odor is noticed, dealer can not find a problem. Ts

I own a 2002 pt cruiser and have always taken good care of it, by having it always serviced at the dealers and nowhere else. I love this car but just recently i have started have some problems with it. First my a/c started to sometimes blow hot air instead of cold and that stopped and then it seems like when i come to a stop with the a/c on it acts like it is going to stall. Now the transmission started making a noise when i go from reverse to drive. So i took it to a dealer to get it fixed and they are telling me i need a new transmission and it will cost me about $3200.00. My car has 45,000 miles on it. I would think that if it has always been serviced by a chrysler dealer that this should have been preventable? can anyone help?thanks for your consideration.

My lights shut off while driving. Not only did my headlights shut off but my dash board lights and the lights on my gear shift did as well. My doors will not lock as well.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that the high beam head lamps would illuminate randomly day or night. The contact stated that the failure occurred at least six times in one week. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that the multi-function switch that controlled the headlights was replaced by him. The contact noticed that the plastic clip holding the electrical harness to the switch had burned. The approximate failure mileage was 153,000.

On returning home from an event in the evening i parked my vehicle in the garage. I turned off lights and then the ignition and everything shut down except the fog lights stayed on (the vehicle was completely shut off). I never had the fog lights on that evening. I tried various a temps i.e. Pushing the butten in, turning the vehicle on and then off again, etc., but did not have any success. My wife went online and found (from many people having the same problem with their pt crusiers) to put the left turn signal on, shut off the vehicle, then push the fog light butten in. This worked so that i didn't wake up to a dead battery. If you go online you will find many people who own pt cruisers with the identical problem including some having smoke coming from the multi function switch. I hope to hear from someone soon!!

Multifunction switch felt like it had additional friction when turning lights on.in the first instance the head lights and fog lights were not coming on when they should. First unit was replaced at the dealership.second instance the switch did not have any precursor indication of failure, all lights from switch just stopped working one day.second unit is being replaced at dealership.part only lasts ~18 months.

The multifunctional light switch on pt cruisers is defective.over 500 pt cruiser owners have reported that suddenly the front & back fog lights come on & do not shut off even when the motor & all other switches are turned off.obviously there is a short in the switch which could result in head lights suddenly being turned off when driving at night.this failure has been constant forcing me & others to remove the fuse controlling the fog lights so that the battery does not drain down after the vehicle is shut down.i and others have encountered extreme difficulty in obtaining a replacement part.

Multi function switch, lights just quit working, very dangerous. I have never had a car were something as basic as the headlights quit working. All lights failed, interior, headlights, dash lights, tail lights.

Fog lights stay on when care is turned off.

Dome lights do not always go out when doors are closed.sometimes dome lights come on when signals are used. Could run battery done if not noticed

I find it very interesting that chrysler does not even show you a sketch of the interior fuse box in their owners manual.this approach does mean that the manufacturer of the vehicle is not allowing the buyer (me) to fully enjoy all the features of the vehicle!seems to me that chrysler corporation has not recalled the defective cars on purpose and needs to have a debacle like toyota had before they will do the right thing and fix a bad design. .

2002 chrysler pt cruiser, the multi-function switch, which controls the fog-lights, headlights, and interior panel is faulty.it shorts out, causing smoke, or the fog lights come on when the car is parked, and drains the battery of all power.driving down the road, the light comes on indicating the fog lights are on, when they have not been activated, then there is a burning smell coming from the steering column, you have to turn the lights on, turn on the blinkers or stop to get this problem to subside.chrysler has had this problem with thousands of the multi-function switches that have the fog-light option.please issue an immediate recall before a fire occurs which means the loss of someone's' life.this can be prevented by immediate action on the governments part.the multifunction switch is faulty, very weak.

Multi-function switch connector housing degrades due to heat exposure over time which can cause shorting, light or turn signal failure or a smoke/fire hazard.the first indication of a problem was that the fog lamps would turn on by themselves.other owners have reported the main lights turning on and a few instances of the steering column billowing smoke while driving.chrysler has 2000+ multi-function switches on back order and refuses to acknowledge the issue after many owners have called to complain about the problem.

Fog lights automatically turning on by themselves without the owners knowledge...later on in the day it would cause issues with the headlights not wanting to work or them going off when you need them which could potentially cause an issue.please review the following website for other potential issues with other consumers:http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chrysler-pt-cruiser/tf81khbdldvt92ah2/p7.

I own a 2002 pt cruiser touring edition and recently i have been coming out to my car to find the battery dead, i have a newer battery so this baffled me until i realized today that there is a short of some kind in the multi switch for the headlights and fog lights that caused the fog lights to remain on eventhough everything else was turned off. The following link shows may others are having the same issue and like others until i find out why this is happening i have pulled the fuse for my foglights.http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0f6957. This is dangerous if there is a short in these switches it can cause a fire and given the massive amt of people all over car forums having this issue why has noone issued a recall on these switches?

The control switch for the headlights on my 2002 pt cruiser has gone bad causing the fog lights to be permanently on and draining the battery.

Multi-control turn signal lever issue.fog lights stay on, even with car off.drains battery.'very touchy', short?had to pull fuse to temporarily remedy situation.

Multifunction switch for headlights and fog lights fails.lights erratic, safety problem big time at night.thousands of complaints of the problem since 2001 can be viewed on line under various posts and threads.obviously a manufacturing defect that the company needs to address.since the company is now run by the government, should i call the white house?

Multi function switch shorted out causing lights to remain on. Leaving my wife unable to attend her chemo therapy session on time, due the need to get car jump started. After several days mis function was notice, brought to dealer and repaired by same at no charge .

2002 chrysler pt cruiser multfunction switch smoking and short circuiting resulting in fog lamp failure.

Fog lamps stayed on when 2002 pt cruiser was turned off. After dissembling of the switch box the internal switch had arched enough that it welded itself together causing the plastic to melt and smoke. I used a real relay to rewire the circuit with a switch on the dash. This is in addition to rebuilding the front suspension and now i have a oil leak. Great car from chrysler. I only have 74,000 on the car.

Fog light switch failure, fog lights stay on whether the switch is turned on or off. Smell of burning wires after vehicle sits for a couple of hours with the lights on.

The fog lights on my 2002 pt cruiser come on by themselves. They have come on during the middle of the night. This has caused my battery to go dead.i had to pull the fuse to make them stop coming on.

The problem i am having started about 2 months ago, when my battery was suddenly drained and i had no idea why.i had to buy a new battery, and found it draining as well.i finally discovered that my fog lights were coming on by themselves while the car was parked.it appears that there is a short or some wiring problem in the turn signal switch lever, which has the fog light switch on the end, and the problem has only got worse.for now, the only solution i have found is to flip the lever down to the left turn signal when the car is parked, which somehow keeps the fog light switch from engaging.i have also found that heat, related to the time of the day, seems to also play a part in it.when it is cool, like in the morning, the fog lights do not turn on.as soon as it warms up for the day, they come on and will not turn off. I decided to do a google search today, and found hundreds of complaints in a post regarding the problem, and that chrysler has never addressed it.the complaints all demonstrate that the left-turn-signal solution i found on my own is the only way to handle the problem.i also noted others have suggested the temperature relationship, where heat from the time of day makes the problem worse.the thread can be read here: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chrysler-pt-cruiser/tf81khbdldvt92ah2

The multifunction turn signal switch allows stops working and fog lights stay on making the battery run down and the only immediate remedy is to disconnect the fog lights, i pulled the fuse. There is an excessive amount of complaints about this issue on the internet. Chrysler should man up to this problem. Someone could get seriously hurt if there is a fire because of this problem. Death or extreme burns could come as a result of chrysler not taking care of this problem. Why does it have to go to such extreme measures for chrysler to take care of this electrical hazard. There are so many instances of this problem out on the web, so i know chrysler can't say that they've never heard about it before. I will sue if me or any of my family are harmed by this electrical short. This is just a bad accident waiting to happen.

Recall on fuel pump module never disclosed by dealer! recently had service to my car at a dodge-chrysler dealer in atlanta, ga and they never disclosed that i had a recall part on my car. My fuel pump module needs a secondary seal placed over it so it won't leak if a roll-over accident occurs. Took car to a second chrysler dealer, and they too never disclosed my recall fuel pump module needs repairs. This problem could result in a serious and fatal accident. Something must be done about these dealers not informing unsuspecting customers of something so serious.

After the recall regarding the fuel pump module was performed, the problem recurred. Upon inspection of the vehicle by another dealership, they indicated the recall was never done. Recall #02v215000)

2002 pt cruiser fire.

When first cranking ca rit will rev itself up, the speedometer goes to 120mph rpms tachs out, and then drops below 1/2 rpm, sputters and backfire soff. Had in chrysler dealership 3 times for this and unable to find a problem. Told me that a sensor could be going bad. Now while my mother was driving out of neighborhood the car went dead as does with me at times at stop sign and refused to crank again. Called roadside had it for a charge of 75.00 and was told i had bad gas and wanted another 510.00 to fix. Was told not covered under reg. Warranty or the 1300.00 extended bumper to bumper we purchased.

While driving in reverse at approximately 3 mph, the driver was warned by pedestrians that the vehicle was on fire.the driver exited the vehicle and a strong smell of gasoline could be detected.the driver opened the hood and there was a rush of flames, which died down after a second.the fire appeared to originate at the low center of the fire wall at the fuel line, which is located near the catalytic converter.orlando fire department report stated the fire was due to a fuel leak.

I have owned my 2002 pt cruiser since may of 2002.since the beginning, i have had trouble fueling up the tank.after about 3-5 gallons of gasoline has filled the tank, the hose shuts off.begin again and it shuts off.this happens an average of 8-10 times during the fueling.the dealership tells me that it's because the opening to the tank has been made smaller to avoid splashbacks outside of the car.it is a royal pain everytime i gas up.is there no solution?

While driving consumer smelled gas fumes.consumer pulled over, and saw fuel leaking from the vehicle.had the vehicle towed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Consumer then took the vehicle to a gas station and filled the gas tankbut the gas gauge still was on empty when the vehicle was restarted.vehicle was then taken to a repair shop.mechanic indicated that when the vehicle got hot from the sun the dashboard components become inoperative. When this occurred the driver was unable to determine the speed he was driving, and how much fuel was in the gas tank.

Buyback request:my 2002 pt cruiser was bought new, with an extended warranty. It was disabled by foothill chrysler ' jeep in foothill ranch ca, while performing a factory recall. It has not been used since then, because it is illegal to drive it.i took it in for 60k mile maintenance ($399). The mechanic demanded that i allow them to do a recall for the 'secondary fuel pump seal', which they did incorrectly, so the red 'check engine' light refused to shut off. The car will not pass the california smog requirement.chrysler was then sold to fiat, and foothill ranch chrysler jeep then went out of business, before they were able to fix it.my vehicle has been disabled, and has been stored on my driveway since 2009, where the neighbors have been complaining.the dealer had insisted that they fix a recall. I declined three times, then reluctantly said yes. Four hours later he said they had a problem, the red 'check engine' light refused to go off. I paid $399, and scheduled another appointment.recall work involved replacing the gas cap and other parts. For a third appointment, i was charged $250.i paid for the red light repair 5 times, for a total of $800. I drove the car with the red light on.six months later, i went to them for the smog check, but the chrysler dealer was gone, replaced by a mercedes benz dealer. I was unable to smog my car, or to have the recall work done.chrysler was then bought out by fiat. Sergio marchione replied to take the car to a different chrysler dealer, but i couldn't legally drive it.the car is worth $6,000 and needs $2,000 worth of work, to fix their faulty recall work. After spending $800 to repair their faulty recall work, i will have a car that doesn't run. It is their fault.i would like to return the car to them, and either get a refund of $6,000, or apply it to the cost of a replacement car that runs.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While attempting to start the vehicle, all the meters, gauges, and instrument panel lighting failed to function. In addition, the interior lighting also failed to illuminate. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

Inside door handle on pt cruiser has split, causing an extremely sharp sliver to cut my finger. Mr. Akkerman, asst. Service manager at the chrysler service center in hemet agrees that this is probably a defective part but that chrysler should not be responsible for replacing it. I wonder if there have been any other complaints or injuries from this handle or if mine is an isolated incident.

Crack in windshield down underneath the rubber the crack grew and grew.the gear shift broke, and the rear passenger tire went flat.

Engine starts and runs, but as soon as i put it into any gear but park, the car immediately dies. It will restart, but again dies when placed in a gear. The check engine light came on so i had my mechanic look at it. He checked for codes and this is the code that came up (p0601). It has 83500 miles. He says it need a new computer. This initially started backing into traffic, the car just quit. I started it back up and went to put it in drive and it again quit. This happens over and over, until someone pushed me out of the street. Car is now parked until it is repaired.

Subject: 2002 pt cruiser brakes / transmissioni do not know if you are the proper person to bring up some safety issues with the chrysler pt cruiserbut it is my sincere hope that maybe you could direct this to someone who can.about two months ago, i had my brakes services at a local shop that i have been dealing with for 10 years.when i was younger, i used to do much of the work to cars myself, and once in a while i do an audit of the work he does.as always, he does a great job.recently i was driving back from lake tahoe on i80.this is mostly full of mountains with very steep grades and a lot of sheer cliffs.i had a full car load of human and personal property so i would conceder it to be close to the max weight of the car.i placed the automatic transmission from over-drive to the next lowest gear during the steep grades.we did not slow down at all! i discovered to my horror that the next lowest transmission speed was third.so i dropped it down again to the next lower gear and it was first gear.since our speed was 55 miles per hour, it did not engage at all.thank goodness it did not.so i applied the abs front discs and rear drums.by the time we got down from this area, i totally burned out the brakes.i have driven other cars from california to texas to florida with similar loads, but never with a transmission with no second gear.i have never burned new brakes up in a similar fission and required one new disc.i do not think that they ??chrysler?? did enough engineering in stopping this car with steep highway grades with a full load, and the population is at risk for run-away cars in those areas.thank you very much for your valuable time.

The transmission from my pt cruiser exploded on i95 near kingsland ga while coming back from a trip on 3/3/08. It has a excellent maintainance record on this car. All services where done when due by a chrysler dealership in hinesville ga, where i purchased this car new in 2002. I have never had any indications that there was anything wrong with my transmission. It never made any strange noise, leaked transmission fluid, skipped gears..and just like that it exploded. It had a complete tune up performedon pt cruiser sept 2007. I had to have it towed to the nearest chrysler dealership in kingsland ga. Transmission needed to be replaced with a cost of $3,484.66a transmission should not have exploded with 80267 miles.i feel overall there is a problem with pt cruisers transmissions and this should be covered under warranty.

While applying thebrake pedal consumer heard a loud squeaking noise coming from the front.also, when applying the brake pedal, the vehicle jerked.vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 15 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate and felt as if it was dragging. There was also a smell was coming from the front of the vehicle.it was towed to an independent repair shop who determined the front left brake was sticking.the caliper was replaced and bolts were tightened.one week later, the same thing occurred. This time the independent repair shop replaced the caliper with the original and suggested a visit to the dealer for further assistance.the dealer flushed the brake system and during a test drive the front left and the rear right brakes caught on fire.it was determined the rotors and pads and abs system needed to be replaced.

Uncontrollable wobble of front wheels as brakes are applied . The higher the speed ,the greater the wobble.

While driving 60 mph abs brake and tractioncontrol system lights came on, and thenvehicle stalled. Vehicle hasnot been taken to dealer.

Grinding noise when applying brakes, cracking noise when anti-lock system activated. The brake pads have been replaced at approx. 22,000 miles and the pads where worned on the driver's side to the metal. There was no pre- warning of the condition. I purchased a ptcruiser when first manufactored the brakes had the same problem.

While traveling on the highway the front brake locked up causing the driver to loose control of the vheicle and run into a ditch, the dealer is aware of the problem. Nlm

While braking consumer heard a loud grinding noise. Consumer was able to decelerate the vehicle with no problem. Took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic could notdetermine the cause of the noise.

Dt: the contact stated the driver'sside and passenger's side air bags deployed while driving down the highway. There was no prior warning.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. She noticed a loud rubbing noise in the steering wheel every time she drove the vehicle. The dealer stated that they could not find the cause or reason for the noise. She received recall notice (04v268000) for the power steering and the repair was performed according to that recall; however, she noticed that the recall repair did not remedy the issue. The dealer later stated that they could not hear the noise in the steering wheel and were unable to diagnose the failure. While driving away from the dealer, she smelled smoke, drove back to the dealer and smoke began to "bellow" from underneath the left front tire. The dealer provided assistance and replaced the hose, caliper, brake pad, rotor and the wheel cover. She was charged $406.60 for the repairs. The manufacturer was advised of the repair cost; however, they advised her to take the matter up with the dealer. The following year the failure recurred, the same dealer told that the caliper was leaking. They caliper was replaced according to the warranty. She asked the dealer why they had not replaced it the first time according to warranty and was told that the first time, it was a new issue. She went back to the dealer the following year for the identical failure and was billed $239 to replace the caliper since the warranty had expired. Recently, she smelled smoke and an authorized dealer stated that the caliper was warped because of intense heat and the brake line had soot in it and that the warped caliper was holding the wheel in place. She provided the dealer with a reference number from the manufacturer. The dealer tried to speak with the representative and was unsuccessful. The current mileage was approximately 37,900. The failure mileage was 21,181.updated 12/7/09updated 12/08/09

The brakes started making a scratch/grinding sound every time i would come to a stop. There was no difficulty with braking, just the noise. So, i visually inspected them and noticed the front right rotor was worn on the outer edge. I took the vehicle to the local, reputable, tire store and they found the damage to have been caused by a clip that came loose, that is supposed to be part of the brake pad. I have kept the defective part. The car had 26,000 miles, much of those miles were highway driving.

Brakes needed replacement at approximately every 11,000 miles.the first incident was approximately 11,480 miles, not only the pads needed replacing rotors were worn as well.the dealer did this under warranty stating it was early wear and tear. The second incident was at approx. 22,080 miles, this time it was only the pads but it was caught early when the vehicle lost all power steering fluid because of a break in the hose there were no warning sign of a problem with the brakes or the power steering.and the dealer stated this was not early wear and tear this time so i had to pay for the repair.when i contacted chrysler with this issue they stated this is normal wear and tear.i may be a woman but i know a thing or two about cars and 11,000 miles for brakes is not "normal' wear and tear!

Brake warning indicator light started coming on intermittently at 27,000 miles, of which 20,000 of those miles are freeway miles. Took the car to the dealer and was told that the brake pads and rotors were both worn out. I asked for the old parts and saw that the inside pads were nearly gone. When i questioned why 1.) there was never a warning from the brake pad chirpers and 2.) the brakes were worn out so soon, i was told by the dealer that chrysler is using lesser quality materials in the rotors and pads. The dealer also said that only the outside pad has a chirper (a worn pad warning device) and that the inside pad will grind the rotor before the outside pad is worn enough to warn the driver. In other words, you will ruin your brake rotors before you are warned.

Front wheel bearings worn out at 79,000 milesall 4 brake rotors worn out 79,000 miles.

Consumer took vehicle to dealerfor a 36000miles check up.two months later, the brakes started to squeal metal to metal. Mechanic stated they had only examined the brakes, andwanted to charge the consumer for the repairs.consumer went to another mechanic, and was told that the rotors had been turned too much.the consumer was made responsible for repairs after being told the rotors where turned to much by the mechanic. *tc

After 23,000 miles the brake light began coming on only when taking off quickly from a stop. Brakes did not squeal and there was no other sign there could be a problem except for the intermittent light coming on. I went to the dealer to get my oil changed and had them check the light while i was there. They told me the brake pads were slightly worn, but the rotors were down to 30% thickness and must be replaced as soon as possible. This car is only a little over a year old with only 23,000 miles on it! plus it's a manual transmission and i down shift a lot to slow the car instead of braking. Other than that occasional light, there was no indication whatsoever there was a problem with the brakes. I never imagined the rotors would wear out that quickly, therefore i might have just ignored the intermittent light. This is a safety and design issue i think chrylser needs to look into.

Rear brakes have not worked correctly since car was bought new in 2002 (pt cruiser). Rear brakes have always made a grinding noise for first or second use and then the grinding noise goes away. Car has 69,600 miles on it and i bought it new. I recently pulled the rear wheels and found that the brake pads were not worn (for both rear wheels) and the drums had rust streaks on them. Also, rust dust was covering everything.it appears that the brakes are not working correctly and i plan on replacing the calipers.

The spring in the brake broke and destroyed the flack adjuster and the drums.dealership indicated that they don't have the part in stockbecausethis part shouldn' t break.

May of 2009, car would not start.no clicks, nothing.then after several tries, turned over.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While driving at various speeds, the power steering fluid leaked. The contact also stated that the air conditioner became inoperable after the failure occurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v268000 (steering). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.

Both front lower control arm bushings were worn and pushed out of control arm. Replacement required to pass ny state inspection, therefore this is a safety item.vehicle has only 16383 miles.

(power steering pressure hose) that i was told could cause a fire under the hood.

..on my 2002 pt cruiser the front suspension cross member has rotted so bad that it broke in a few places causing the lower a arm to move in such a way as to cause the steering wheel to pull out of your hands all the way to the left and or right, the car could not be driven more then 15 mph,..and that was while holding the wheel tightly....if this cross member was to break while driving 65 mph there would be a very bad crash,..i suggest any one that has a pt cruise have it checked for the cross member rotting before a crash takes place,,,i was able to buy a new cross member and the cheapest price was $514 plus tax and shipping,..now comes the costs to install it...what is odd the cross member rotted out on the passenger side only,...i have some pics of it with the a arm off the cross member..

You can remove the key from the ignition switch in any of the positions.also, you can move the gear shift and the car will move. There is no incident date. It's been that way since i bought it new.

I have had to replace or repair the front and rear wheel bearings several times:front-april of 2005 at 64690 miles, front-april 2006 at 89223 miles, front-may 2006 at 91750 miles, front wheel bearing-july 2009 at 153048 miles, front wheel bearing-april 2011 at 182684 miles, rear wheel bearing-october 2011 at 191072 miles. In three instances on the interstate highway the pt cruiser will downshift into first gear where it will remain after the check engine light appears.this has happened all times when driving, in excess, of 45mph.after the problem, the pt cruiser can be driven, but is limited to crawling along at 15 - 20mph.we have taken the car to 2 different dealerships for repair, however the problem has not been corrected.currently, this is the 34th cumulative day in the shop, and a total in 37 days in the last 3 months.

Complaint sent via e-mail." i first started having a serious problems with my car power steering.while driving, smoke started coming out of the hood, and i thought the engine was on fire. I then called daimler chrysler and told them, and they just said that they would make a report. But i heard nothing from them at all. However, i took my car to chrysler dealership and they temporarily fixed it, but a month later the steering wheel started making a whining sound when turning. I took my car back to the dealer, and they said that they put a new power steeringto fix it.three weeks later oct 8th 2004, i started hearing the loud whining noise again and the steering wheel was hard to turn. I am concerned that my car will caught on fire and that i or my passengers will be seriously injured.

While driving at 35 mph driver swervedto the left to avoid hitting another vehicle. The rear right wheel came off at the spindle when the steering wheel was turned back to the right. This resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle and driving into a ditch. Several mechanics inspected the vehicle, and indicated that the 4 spindle bolts were stripped which caused the wheel to separate.

While driving 35 mph steering wheel vibrated.driver drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic replaced the pitman armdue to a worn out part.

Leaking steering rack and solenoid pack. Possible leak in steering pump also. Safety of tie rod ends, bushings, sway bars, control armsnoted in inspection of front end both by a chrysler dealer and by an auto-repair chain. Both recommended replacement of parts (in shop right now) to eliminate a safety risk. In speaking to another owner of this same year and model of car with low mileage, i learned that he has experienced the same problems.

1) heard occasional "clicking" noise in steering.did not experience steering problems.2) on saturday, may 26th, the tie rod broke while turning a corner, stopping the vehicle instantly.fortunately, the catastrophic failure occurred at low speed.3) the car was towed by aaa to a nearby car maintenance center.

I bought my car new, a '02 pt cruiser, and this is the second time that the rack and pinion has cracked!!!i have been told that the part is on nationalback order, which tells me that i am not the only person that this has happened to!!

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact noticed that the steering column was difficult to turn.when he arrived home, he placed power steering fluid in the vehicle.the steering column began working again, but a noise was heard while driving.the vehicle was driven to the dealer and they stated that the power steering cap was defective.the vehicle was not repaired.the vehicle was later driven to a tire shop for new tires and the mechanic stated that the rack and pinion was defective and needed to be replaced.the manufacturer stated that they were not liable for the repairs.the current mileage was 105,164 and the failure mileage was unavailable. Updated 12/30/08 the rack and pinion was leaking. Updated 12/30/08.

Power steering failed.dealership states the power steering rack and pump are defective.this was a sudden loss of steering.the part is back ordered up to 3 weeks which leads me to believe this is not an isolated incident.there must be a significant number of rack failures.

2002 chrysler pt cruiser has dash board that is severely cracked

Dashboard in 2002 pt cruiser has crackeddown the middle and has began to separateinto pieces.this includes the center defrost vent.per the june 18,2007 miami herald you had 9 complaints from owners of 2002 models and 12 from 2001 owners.this was over 2 years ago.an internet search shows many more complaintsthat probablyhaven'tbeen filed with the nhtsa.chrysler denies responsibility.various manufacturers ( e.g. Coverking) have already started making dash covers for the pt cruiser specifically to cover cracked dashes; but i cannot use one as these covers do not include the center defrost vent which has broken into pieces and fallen into the vent.the only solution is to replace the entire dash cover.it has happened to enough cars surely to initiate a defect investigation. Chrysler should be made to replace these defective dashes!

Dashboard on my pt cruiser -2002 just started cracking first a the windshield like a hair line crack - then defrost vent involved - now it has a hole in the vent -and now just this weekend another hairline crack starting at the air vent and going now to the console.what is happening to my dash?this could be a safety hazard with the air bag just down below.no wreck involved.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.while driving 15 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle's dashboard was cracked.the mechanic at the local dealer was notified of the failure.the current mileage is 54,000 and failure mileage was 51,000.

Note: this is not a safety issue (as far as i know) but i want it to go on record from what all pt cruiser owners have been going through.dashboard cracked and vent grids crumbled when doing a regular cleaning (dusting with cloth).i just want to be noted that i found out that the great majority of pt cruisers have this issue. I do not think it is fair to customers to have no protection from such poor quality materials. Manufacture should be made liable for such things.

The contact owns a 2002 chyrsler pt cruiser.the vehicle's entire dashboard burst into several pieces.the temperature was approximately 80 degrees.the manufacturer will not repair the dashboard due to the state's climate.the engine size is not available. The current mileage is 97,000 and failure mileage was 86,000.

Thedashboard started cracking last month onthe pt cruiser and appearedto be getting worse. I was concerned that this will make driving the car dangerous. Some of the cracked vent was already falling into the inside of the car. Here is a picture of the dashboardatwww.pbase.com/rod_ostoski/image/78561344.according to the local tv news 6 problem solvers at orlando, florida this was a wide spread issue. We feltthis was a defect of the car that should be fixed by the manufacturer.

2002 pt cruiser: dashboard cracked in center from front window to inside edge, running across vent, requires replacement of dashboard.

While driving heard a loud crack and the dash on the car cracked about 16 inches, so far have only put duct tape on it to hopefully keep the crack from going any further.it has cracked from the left side, just under the window to almost the center vent on the dash.

The dash pad "cover" on our 2002 chrysler pt cruiser limited has cracked and broken into numerous sharp pieces. This car has been well maintained and this should not happen to a car of this age. We have other cars, older and newer that have had no issues with cracking dashboards. This is a manufacturing defect and potential safety hazard. We have become aware of this defect/safety hazard occurring on many other chrysler pt cruisers.

I owna 2002 p/t cruiser and the dash oard cracked right down the middle from the windshield to the top of the control console, about a foot long or 15 inches long crack. There was no vehicle accident causing this, or any other trauma to the dashboard.it simply cracked in the 5 years we owned the car.

2002 pt cruiser: cracking dashboard, improper materials used in construction, requires replacement of dashboard.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.the contact stated that the dashboard was completely cracked and houses the passenger side air bag.the manufacturer and dealer have not been notified.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were less than 100,000.

I have a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser that i have had since it was new.it has always been garaged.a couple of months ago, i noticed the dashboard had two cracks running from each side of the center vent to the windshield.now there is a large crack running from the center of that vent to the front of the dash.the dash in this car is just a cover, a piece of plastic.the crack is not like the cracks you used to get in a dash that was foam covered metal.these cracks are where the plastic has completely broken through.in a web search, i found where this is happening on a lot of these vehicles.

Iown a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. I was aware chrysler only offered a 3 year warranty on my car when purchased, so i opted and paid extra for an extended warranty to cover an additional 2 years. Basically last may 2006, i noticed a crack appeared onthetop dashboard next to the windshield and the grill on the top dash also had a crack. I called thelocal chrysler dealer and explained the situation and they said there was not a recall and there was nothing they could do to assist me. I explained i purchased an extended warranty and they then said that this was considered more of a cosmetic issue not anything that is covered under the extended warranty policy. We then called the main chrysler headquarters office they claimed the same thing. So to this day i still have the crack on the top part of dashboardwhich now is cracked all the way across vertically (dash is split in half) because no one at chrysler considered this a defect issue for some odd reason and lack the customer service all companies need to run a successful business. I vowed since then to never purchase another chrysler.

2002 p t cruiser by chrysler the dash board in my car started cracking. I am holding it together with tape. I am fearful of the plastic caving in and causing me to have an accident. When i reported this to chrysler corp., using their 800 number they were rude and said they would not help. I have found on the internet i am not the only one with this problem. What will it take for this defect to be corrected?bonita smith

Dashboard has cracked from center windshield region to the air vent.the grill on the air vent has cracked and broken.

The dashboard on my 2002 pt cruiser has literally crack straight down the middle. I am sure this could be a safety issue if it gets any larger.

2 cracks in my 2002 pt cruiser dashboard suddenly appeared and are expanding.

The consumer stated that since the vehicle was purchased, the brakes were defective and performed poorly when applied.the consumer suspects that the dealership did not work on the brakes at all.there was a screeching noise and the brakes would sometimes go almost to the bottom of the floor.the driver's seat belt did not always lock, the brakes would rub and hesitate to stop, the a/c did not get cold on high settings, the entire dashboard electronic system was off, the fuel, mph and the rpm lights had come on, at the inside top of all four doors, the lining was buldging in and out, the driver's side seat belt needed several attempts before locking, the right signal had to be manually stopped, and the left signal light did not hold.there was also an issue with the odometer reading.(the consumer felt that it did not display the proper mileage) *sc

Dashboard on the 2002 pt cruiser is cracking down the middle and vibrates badly when driving. Concerned that it will collapse.

Dashboard cracking in 2002 pt cruiser.

The dashboard ofthe 2002 p.t. Cruiser had cracked in two (2) places, and i felt that chrysler should be responsible for this defect, as a new dashboard cost approximately $220.00 - please advise.

My 2002 chrysler pt cruiser received a crack on the dashboard.the crack slowly grew around the vent and started to collapse.i am concerned that the pieces will fall into the wiring under the dash.carmax (where i bought the car) and chrylser would not pay for the repair because it is out of warranty.the car is only 5 1/2 years old.for my safety, i will have to pay for the repair myself.

2002 chrysler pt cruiser. Cracked dash. *mc

Dashboard began crumbling about 3-4 years after i bought the car (new) and is now in terrible shape and may be near collapsing. I have not checked into replacement yet. I have seen many complaints regarding this same issue with other pt cruiser owners and other chrysler-made cars.

Large crack in dashboard, from window to bottom of dashboard through air vent. Another crackwas starting near passenger side.

Dashboard has cracked.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser.the contact noticed a crack in the dashboard.as years went by, the crack grew larger.the vehicle has not been taken to the mechanic.the vin, engine size, and # of cylinders were unknown.the current mileage is 35,000 and failure mileage was 30,000.updated 08/07/07.

I noticed the crack in the dashboard . At the end of the evening the crack went from the vent on the dashboard to the windshield. Another crack opened about 3 inches to the left and continued cracking until it was completely cracked in half . Now ,therewas a third fissure starting. The piecesof the ventwere falling inside of it.

2002 pt cruiser, dashboard has cracks.

Loud cracking sounds while driving then the dash started opening up in two places, one through the vent fan all the way to the instrument panel and the other from the vent toward the glove box. Chrysler and my dealer claim they have never heard of this problem although many complaints on the web and this site? also many on this site said they contacted chrysler. Have made appointment to replace at my cost since it doesn't seem safe to drive a car that's splitting down the middle, and chrysler and the dealer claim no responsibility. My car has been well maintained, used sun shades and only has 35,585 miles, living on the central california coast where the weather is mild all year around. Seems like this is defective material that chrysler should replace.

Dashboard has cracked in about 5 different places and falling in.

Dashboard cracking on 2002 pt cruiser.watching crack work it's way along dash.. ...today heard a loud crack sound and now dash is cracked in half.i do not see any recall info from chrysler.i was told i would need to pay for a replacement dash.this car is garaged except when working during the day.probably not a major problem...but could be a safety issue.

Dashboard cracked for unknown reasons.

Dashboard cracked in center from front window to inside edge, running across vent, which has falling into dash in pieces; also frequently "shorts out" and radio, inside lights, dash lights, all go out making night driving dangerous.

Pt cruiser dashboard is cracking and growing longer.when i took the car to be serviced at chrysler and showed them the crack they said they have never seen or heard of this happening to any other cars then gave a quote for me to pay and fix it.however the local news has been investigating and this is a widespread problem with the pt cruisers and a dodge truck.

Dashboard collapsedon 2002 pt cruiser purchased in january 2006. Approximately 6 months ago two cracks appeared on the dashboard, then in march 2007 the ventilation grill started to break, and the dashboard wasnow basically in two halves. As the gap in the dashboard appeared to be getting larger.a temporary repair was made using super glue to hold the dashboard together.

I have a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser and, i noticed a small crack in the dashboard, and a couple of weeks later the small crack is now bigger and almost to my a/c vents and the vent in the dashboard is cracking badly. I feel that something might fail because of this.

Cracking dashboard and the cooling fan assembly has failed.

Dashboard falling apart.

2002 pt cruiser 55,000 miles dash cracked in the middle.

Car's plastic dashboard suddenly cracked in the center and pieces fell into the center vent. Dashboard now has sharp edges from the cracks, which could cause injury in the event of collision. Do to the nature of the damage i don't believe the dashboard complies with following:571.201 standard no. 201; occupant protection in interior impact.

Dashboard cracked straight down the middle (north to south).

I have a 2002 pt dash started cracking at center vent cracked 2 ways now is a large crack an very sharp edges on pieces no wrecks , has been well taken care of .the car has very low miles on it . This upsets me on the problem withit . I need it fixed.

Wind from outiside was coming inside of vehicle while traveling, also there was a rough idling problem, dealership was aware of the problem.

Vehicle pulled out of business complex turn in left about a car lengths away from me when he pulled out..attempted to stop but vehicle was too close. No air bags deployed.

The vehicle's panels for the windows are beginning to discolorbecause of the chemical used when washing the vehicle.

Takararecall. While changing upper and lower motor mount i noticed sub frame on the passenger's side was rotted and after i put mounts in the car pulls when accelerating

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph and making a right turn, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. The contact exit the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger side sub frame had excessive rust and fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed that the front passenger frame, the cv axles and the lower control arms with ball joint and the stabilizer link had fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

Front and rear bumpers have what looks to be masking tape marks on them where the paint has now faded.the faded area is approximately the width of masking tape and goes from the edge of the passenger side of both bumpers across to the driver's side of both bumpers.

Consumer was pulling into a parking space and hit a concrete curb.the consumer was backing up and heard a loud streaking noise coming from underneath the vehicle, the front bumper fell off.consumerhadvehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and a customer service rep informed the consumer that the bumper was designed too low to the ground.

Front & back bumpers.both front and back bumpers appear to have like a masking tape marks . The area is approximately the widthe of masking tape and goes around the edge of the front bumpers.

I have discoloration on both bumpers similar to what is described in odi complaints 10058425 and 10105776.the dicoloration has been noticeable since shortly after the purchase of the car but has gotten worse over time.looks like there was masking tape on the bumper when a protective coating was put on the rest of the bumper leaving the plastic under the masking tape unprotected when it was removed. The discoloration clearly indicates that there had once been tape on the bumper leaving a faded spot in the shape of a square of tape which has become pronounced over time.

I decided to drive to a city about an hour and a half way. Not knowing on the way back i was going to have to tie the back door shut. Me, my boyfriend, and my 4 year old daughter were with me. We had went into a mall. When coming back out i had opened the back driver's side door open to let my daughter in. After i had her buckled in i tried to shut the door and it wouldn't shut. After several attempts we used shoe strings and belts to hold the door shut and my boyfriend road home in the back to also help hold the door. For i didn't want my 4 year old to fall out the door on the way home. So for the next two weeks i had a rope tied from one door to the other door and my kids had to ride in the front seat to the babysitters a few blocks away which is completely illegal because of being 4 and 5. But what was i to do i'm a single mom. The dealer wanted to charge me 80 dollars just to tell me what was wrong and then another 80 to fix it plus the part. Now i'm having other issues with my 2002 pt cruiser and no money to fix it.

Hood damage is experienced due to the hood rod being installed at the rear next to the firewall. If closing the hood is attempted prio to lowering the rod, the rod pops up into the prop cavity and damages the hood.there is no protection between the rod and the hood.this is a poor design and chrysler should be required to make the repairs,, put out a service bulletin to all pt cruiser owners, alongwitha warning label,, and correct the design.a stop should prevent the rod from pushing up into the cavity and damaging the hood.

Front and rear door pillars on booth sides have developed a discolorization/opaque film that cannot be removed.dealer says they have no record of any problems.

Rear passenger side window makes a loud flapping noise when the vehicle is driven50 mph or faster. Also, windows vibrate. Dealer has yet to be contacted. Please provide further details.

In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle veered to the right independently without warning while driving 40 mph. The contact discovered that the front passenger side cross member was fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,616.

2002 pt cruiser motor mounts keep going out. I had my mounts replaced 6 months ago. Then within 2 months they went out again. Now they are making noise again. These are obviously defective. If these mounts all fail, the engine can fall on to the axle and who knows what will happen?

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. While making a right hand turn at 5 mph the sub frame underneath the front end of the vehicle broke. He could not control the vehicle or drive it. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who inspected it and the consumer was told that the main cross member/sub frame deteriorated and caused the entire front end to come apart. The dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was notified and a complaint was filed but it was denied due to lack of maintenance on the vehicle. They offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 48,100.the consumer stated as he wasmaking a turn, the vehicle came to a sudden halt. When he exited the vehicle, he discovered the front wheel was leaning toward the road. The vehicle was towed the chrysler dealer. Upon inspection, chrysler denied the consumer claim stating the reason for the failure was due to lack of maintenance on the vehicle. Updated 11/10/10

..on my 2002 pt cruiser the front suspension cross member has rotted so bad that it broke in a few places causing the lower a arm to move in such a way as to cause the steering wheel to pull out of your hands all the way to the left and or right, the car could not be driven more then 15 mph,..and that was while holding the wheel tightly....if this cross member was to break while driving 65 mph there would be a very bad crash,..i suggest any one that has a pt cruise have it checked for the cross member rotting before a crash takes place,,,i was able to buy a new cross member and the cheapest price was $514 plus tax and shipping,..now comes the costs to install it...what is odd the cross member rotted out on the passenger side only,...i have some pics of it with the a arm off the cross member..

2002 chrysler pt cruiser developed a noise in which the consumer took the vehicle to have repaired.parts on the vehicle were replaced but the noise remains.*mr

I have replaced or repaired the suspension parts:front bushing control arm, ball joint lower control arm-march 2006 at 86643 miles, left inner tie rod had excessive play-january 2007 at 107087 miles, two outer tie rods replaced-january 2008 at 127121 miles.

The vehicle severely pulled to the right, whichresulted in an accident. The driver side air bag deployed, and the module fell out also.

Subframe cradle failure with crack through mounting. Dealer says "seen before" not under recall or investigation. While driving at 60 mph vehicle produces a loud grinding noise. Causeunknown.

I own a 2002 pt cruiser. It recently almost caused a severe accident due to the sub-frame that holds the front suspension together. The garage that it is being worked on said that it was completely rusted out and he has never seen such a thing. Also, when it broke, it also broke the tie rod, the steering rack and the a-arm. I was only going about 40 mph at the time when it happened, had i been going any faster i would have been in a severe accident. I googled this problem and found other complaints from owners with the same problem. I feel that this should be looked into.

I have a 2002 pt cruiser and took it in for an oil change and they said: bushings (both lower-front) remove & replace control arm shaft and bushings, lower both control arm.bearing & seals.from what i am reading it seems to be a common problem with pt cruisers.

I have a 2002 pt. Cruiser i have had to replace the right side front control arm bushings and wheel bearings and now i am having to replace the left side control arm bushing and wheel bearing with in a month of each other.this is for the second time in 3 years i also think this is to often for them to be replacedand the manufacture should do something about this before someone get hurt.

I own a 02 and 03 pt cruiser. Both cars have had to have control arms replaced as well as idler arms. Were considered dangerous at less then 50,000 miles. Chrysler is aware of this situation-all over the net, refuses to do anything, says it's normal wear.

My 2002 pt cruiser has had two sets of front control arms replaced at 90,000 miles due to the control arm bushing failing.the first time the bushing came out completely.the second time it was still in place but torn.both repair shops indicate this is a known and very common problem with these vehicles and a safety concern.

The front suspension bushing on all chrysler pt cruisers are designed in such a manner that they can dislodge from their positions without warning, causing the front suspension to lose it's alignment. The bushing failure is covered with chrysler's warranty but the excessive tire wear associated with it, is not. The tire damage happens so fast that the tires cannot be salvaged. This is a common problem with pt cruisers. The dealers refuse to accommodate for the tire wear caused by their problem.

Lower control arm bushing seperation:lower control arm bushing failed while driving to work the sudden failure caused the car to drop on passenger side. Tech at local wal-mart stated that if it had failed when i was turning the reduced clearnce would have caused my front right corn to dig into the ground.

I read several pt related forums and many members have commented about lower control arm bushing failures, weel so have mine. I am experencing viberation from the front end and will make arangments at the dealership where i bought the car. From what i have read on the forums it is not a matter of if they will fail......but when they will fail. I believe this is a matter that should be a recall. This is an obvious safty item, as total loss of these bushings would result in loss of controll of the car causing a crash. Thank you 2002 chrysler pt cruiser dream ser 1.

When doing the 30,000 mile oil change/inspection i noticed splits in the lower control arm bushings.this is only noticeable when the suspension is unsupported. The car was dealer serviced for the recalls and was asked for an inspection of the bushings with a written response a this time. Dealer mechanic said it was normal wear but response was suspicious in nature and not forthcoming. The car was then taken to an independent auto mechanic and stated that the bushings appeared to be coming apart. The car was then taken to a different dealer with this concern and they then decided to replace the bushings under the original warranty. No parts retained due to dealer policy that no parts under warranty work will be given to the owner. I request an investigation of the lower control arm bushings for inferior rubber and design. It appears that if the bushings fail the control arm will fall off and may result in severe injury.

Dt*:at 45,000 miles the front lower control arm bushings and link failed and had to be replaced. Updated 03/17/06.

2002 pt cruiser. The lower control arm bushings are separating from the rubber. This can cause loss of vehicle control, rattles, severe tire vibration or front end vibration. Currently mine has 46.000 miles and the problem is occurring on mine. I had them replaced one year ago at 38,000 miles. There is no way that these type of bushings should be having this separation problem at such a low mileage. A recall is in order, before a owner has a vehicle accident due to the vehicle loosing steering control.

Based on concerns by other pt cruiser owners, i have checked the condition of the lower control arm bushings on my two year old, 11,000 mile car.the rubber is separating from the metal, due to a poor bond between the two?in any case this is inappropriate for a new car with so little use. I believe damlerchrysler should be directed to be responsible for any costs associated with repairing said bushings:parts, installation, extend warranty, worn tires due said loose parts, and other suspension components. Having owned many carsand quite a few new cars, never a problelm with these components starting to disintegrate.please review other complaints and trust that you will provide a fair solution to the many owners of this model car, many of which have had to pay for a repair/replacement from their own pocket!!!!

The lower control arm bushings are separating from the rubber. This can cause loss of vehicle control, rattles, severe tire vibration or front end vibration. Some of my members have had this occur as low as 5000 miles. Currently mine has 36.000 miles and the problem is occurring on mine. I am a ase certified technician. And there is no way that these type of bushings should be having this separation problem at such a low mileage. A recall is in order, before a owner has a vehicle accident due to the vehicle loosing steering control.

My cruiser was in the shop for regular maintenance, when the mechanic found that the lower control arm bushings were worn.in reading this site, i see that this has become a real problem fleet wide.i had to pay for the front end alignment, plus the $100 deductible on the extended warrant.based on what i read, i think that the cars should be recalled and repaired at no cost to me.

On my 2002 chrysler pt cruiser it appears the grease fitting on both left and right front ball joints have been broken off.i am concerned that a broken grease fitting can act as a path for water and other contaminants to enter the ball joint and cause it to prematurely wear out and fail, potentially causing vehicle handling problems.i heard rumors that the grease fittings are purposely being broken off at the chrysler assembly plant.

Driving down street at 20 mi per hr.right front lower aarm broke off wheel causing wheel to turn right hitting a parked car.is at body shop being repaired.

While driving, the alignment is off causing the vehicle to swerve. Notified the dealer 5 times , dealer said the tire is defective. Contacted the tire manufacture, they said it's not the tire. Ph *jg

2002 chrysler pt cruiser with chrome plated 5-spoke wheels; chrome plating has bubbled/corroded on the sealing surface of the tire bead.this has caused slow leakage of air in tires.unless the pressure is adjusted weekly or more often, the tire pressure gets low causing excessive wear and overheating which could lead to catastropic failure.this condition progresses over time and exposure to road caustics & salt.

Consumer called complaining about having a problem with the tires. Also stated that the first week that she bought the vehicleshe had to take it back for service because her left front tire was low and at the dealer they plug the tire and now she is having the same problem again. I own the 2002 chysler pt cruiser limited.hold in the trip odometer reset button while turning the ignition key to run will start a self-test, with a readout on the odometer. It will also activate the instrument panels, one at a time. The test will run for approximately 60 seconds, then automatically shut down. If the test senses a fault, the odometer will show the p-code number for the corresponding (dtc) diagnostic trouble code.the self diagnostic that is on the odometer is giving false reading. Fl0008, ee08, bl01, and 5 of 4.7.i checked several website and there are several other owners of this model pt cruiser that are having the same false readings.i would like to be able to use the "self diagnostic test" that is suppose to be a standard on this model.

Structure - noticed slight clunk from front suspension on bumps. On mechanic's lift, found all suspension parts still good or recently replaced, but front k-member severely rusted through. Declared unsafe and unfixable, although at 112,000 miles the rest of the car is still in great shape.

Unpredictabley, when i 'click' the cruise control lever to slow down, it will acelerate, creating unexpected and occasionally dangerous situations.it has been reported to the dealer at least 5 times. The old service mgr refused to deal with it, blaming me. The new service mgr took it in, tested, and 'repaired' it. The frequency of this unpredictable resonse has gone down, but it still happens. It shouldn't be this way. Two notes:my previous car had an almost identical control arrangement, a very good one, so i am familiar with using it to control my speed. And, there is a long response time before the cruise control system responds to almost any 'command'. Thhis by itself can be irritating. I don't know i the two are related. Thank you.jsl.

The cruise control turns on by itself, causing the car to accelerate. After turning the cruise control off, it comes back on several seconds later, and accelerates! very scary and dangerous! this happens every time it's driven.the car was taken to a dealer for service, and they just called saying they had completed updates to the car's computer system, and it doesn't seem to malfunction anymore. They are going to keep the car for another day, and drive it around periodically, to see if it's solved, and i'll get it back tomorrow.

Chrome plated aluminum wheels on 2002 chryslerpt cruise limited.chrome peels off and the rim leaks air..local dealer was well aware of the problem.

Vehicle pulled out of business complex turn in left about a car lengths away from me when he pulled out..attempted to stop but vehicle was too close. No air bags deployed.

After replacingthe original tires on the auto we had a series of problems with keeping the tires inflated. We were told that the chrome on the rims was oxidizing and it was a problem with all chrysler corp. Chrome rims. We had five (5) flat tires with ina two week period and decided to talk to the chrysler dealer regarding the problem. We were told that they could do nothing about this safety problem because the auto was out of warranty. We then contacted chrysler customer service phone number and were told they would not stand behind there product because it was out of warranty. We then sent a letter to chrysler corp. And have not had any response.again we were told that there are many chrysler vehicles on the road with rims that will cause a flat tire at any time and no one at chrysler seems to want to correct this safety issue.

Tires , leak air pressure@ 10 # per day . Balancing and rotation is difficult due to chrome peeling off rims. Mechanic told me the peeling is inside the tire also making it difficult to balance. I inserted (fix aflat) to help stop the leaking but this added to the imbalanced condition. Dealer was contacted but no response was given for this condition.

The contact owns a 2002 chrysler pt cruiser. When the vehicle was at 32,000 miles, the contact noticed that the tires constantly lost pressure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer several times. The dealer replaced the valve system and cleaned the wheel. The failure continued. The contact called the manufacturer who advised her to take the vehicle back to the dealer who stated that the metal was corroded. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 36,000 and the current mileage was 62,000.

2 of the alloy rims leak air at an increasing rate. 2 years ago it was fill more air once a month, last year every 2 weeks or less and last 2 months every 2 days. The other day i lost a tire from low air after driving 50 miles over a 7 hour time frame. I lose about 20 lbs overnight on these 2 tires because the corrosion of the base metal and the chrome is happening at an unbelievable rate. The tire dealers have scraped off the old corrosion but to no avail as it quickly recurs. I am lucky it was only a flat the other day and not a loss of steering in busy traffic.

2002 chrysler pt cruiser. Consumer states the wheels leak air around the rims causing the tires to deflate *tgw

Was losing massive amounts of air from left rear tire.took it to sears, for tire repair, and was told that the tire was fine, but that the chrome plated wheel was severely corroded at the bead.then took car to dealer, where the mechanic said that the wheel was beyond repair, and ordered a new one.replaced a week later.ok since, however i now have two more wheels doing the same thing. Warranty has expired, not sure what to do.i am afraid that the wheels may fail.

Dt*: the contact stated, on 3/1/05 all tires were low. Upon inspection by the service dealer, corrosion was found on the rims of all four tires, causing the seal between the tire and rims to be broken. The tires were removed and all tires and rims were cleaned and placed back onto the vehicle. The manufacturer was alerted. The manufacturer determined there was no liability on the manufacturer because the vehicle's warranty was expired. Updated 11/3/2006 -

Wheel rim oxidation is causing tire/rim leak with new tires.this leak must be filled daily and runs the risk of tire failure and an accident.this leak is on a 2002 pt dream cruiser with 35837 miles

Had tires changed at dealer.after tire change, two of the tires began leaking.after several trips to the dealer to have them checked, dealer finally decided that the chrome-plated rims were corroded and had to be replaced.now, after having two more tires replace, the new tires are leaking and i am afraid that i will have to pay for two more rims.
