The vehicle experienced problems with the keyless entry system.nlm

Design/location of the horn button is extremely difficult to locate in emergency situations.

While driving at speeds of 45mph or higher, the vehicle engine shuts down, causing the vehicle to stall.

Vehicle would stall out while driving at highway speeds. Sometimes vehicle could be restarted after stalling out. Took vehicle to dealership, but mechanic could not resolveproblem.dealer stated to consumer stalling could be related to the fuel pump, however if they could not find the problem, the consumer would be charged.vehicle intermittently will not start, it will crank but it will not start, after letting it sit for an hour or two it will start.

Vehicle experiencing problem with smoke coming from under the dash. Dealer notified, andreplace a body module on two occasions, which caused the wiring harness to burn. Vehicle still at dealer shop for repairs. Please provide further details.

There was an extremely loud shutter and shake when this happened. Car does seem to operate the same since this problem. Gas mileage has gone down by three mpg, even after a tune up by chrysler and fuel system cleaning. Shortly after some fuses blew., now at 75,000 there is a lound growning sound when you steer to the left. Brakes have been replaced and need it again. Airconditioner has funny damp smell. I put power steering fluid in and motor oil and transmission in the car and it caught on fire. My kids was in the car with me.

Inside tie rod bushing failed shortly after being saturated with anti-freeze from water pump failure.

Vehicle has only 38000 miles yet water pump is worn out.dealer states this model exhibits premature failure of water pumps and related items.

By 35000 miles, water pump leaked, p/s pump leaked and oil pan leaked.also, rear window defogger failed.all replaced under warranty.windshield subject to chipping, has been replaced once.

Our mechanic stated he has replace 9 to 10 timing belts, idler pully, water pumps on the same type of cars. It seams like the idler pully freezes, causing the water pump to freeze, which then causes the timing chain to break. Total cost to repair was 503.00 plus a large towing bill. I would think a $85.00 pulley should be made better as to not cause so much damage when it breaks.

Vehicle experienced severe engine melt down from overheating, the water pump failed which drained all fluid from the engine.*mjs

Fuel pump failed.

Vehicle recall repair not completed due to dealership problems (98v-184). Mjs

Recalled fuel rail o-rings failed possibile causing vehicle to catch fire (michael spitzer attorney for client).nlm

Recall 98v184000 concerning fuel leakage. Consumer smelled a strong gasoline odor while driving 35-40 mph.the vehicle was taken to a repair shop, andmechanic determined that the o-rings cracked and leaked fuel onto the engine. Consumer contacted the manufacturer. A manufacturer's representative informed the consumer that this vehicle was not covered under the recall.

The contact owns a 1996 chrysler lhs.the contact noticed a leak and smelled gasoline coming from the vehicle.the dealer stated that the leak originated from the fuel pump and that her vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 98v184000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system).the dealer called the manufacturer and they stated that the parts were no longer available for the recall repair.the vehicle is currently in the shop for repair. Updated 02-25-08 the o-rings and fuel rails were replaced. Updated.

Recall (98v-184) was completed on the vehicle, however the recall repair is inadequate and the vehicle experienced failure of the fuel rail which cracked and caused fuel leakage, consumer had the repairs completed and request reimbursement for the additional repairs of the fuel system which should have been corrected in the recall repair. *mjs

The consumer has been experiencing problems with fuel injection system. While driving, fuel leaked out ofvehicle.the manufacturer has been contacted.the safety defect is in accordance with recall number 98v184000.

There was a fuel leak fromfuel injection which was leaking fuel onto the engine.

I know that this problem is under a previous recall, but i have taken this in to the dealership three times to have it fixed and it has only lasted maybe 6 months. I 'm concerned about my family's safety. I would like this brought to the manufactures attention. I had tried to trade this car in, but the dealership, which was not the manufacture was uneasy about this recall. I feel that this needs further investigation . Thank you.

Recall repair was completed on the fuel injection system (98v-184), however the vehicle continued to experience problems with the fuel rails, dealership refuses to repair without charges. *mjs

The contact owns a 1996 chrysler lhs.the contact stated thatthe o rings are leaking.the vehicle is being repaired under recall # 98v184000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system).the dealer stated that the o rings are not a part of the recall and will not be replaced for free.the purchase date and failure mileage were unknown.the current mileage is 130,000.

Received a recall on the fuel injection o-rings. Prior to receiving the recallvehicle caught on fire.the dealer claims that they fixed all components that causedthe fire . Consumerinsistedthat vehicle's condition worsened after the dealer fixed vehicle. Manufacturer has been notified.

On 15 nov 2003, my 1996 chrysler lhs, vin [xxx], started smelling of gas while i was waiting at an intersection.after driving to a nearby lot, i determined that fuel was leaking on top of the engine, around the fuel injector rails.didn't want to drive it, so i parked it and called my auto service for a tow to a las vegas precision tune autocare that i've used for vehicle maintenance.they confirmed the fuel rail assembly was leaking and needed replaced.injector base gasket, injector o-rings, plum gasket and injector rail assembly was replace for $540.72 equipment, $337.12 labor, shop supplies $34.55, and tax $43.14 for a total of $955.54.upon filing my maintenance records i found an earlier daimler chrysler safety recall to replace fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the fuel outlet rail, recall 790.i had a virginia chrylser dealer accomplish the recall corrections on 23 april 99.called the 1-800-992-1997 chrysler customer service number to determine their assistance in reimbursement for the obvious failed recall repairs.was told by the representative that since i had not taken it to a chrysler dealer there was nothing they could do.two issues:1.the recall repairs obviously did not correct the problem, how many other lhs's could be vulnerable for an engine fire?for safety i hope someone researches this and ensures corrective measures are taken before someone gets hurt.2.i've got the paperwork, is chrysler still not liable for the repairs of their poorly engineered fuel system, enough so that it could cause an auto fire or worst?thanks for your time,[xxx]updated 07/27/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Fuel injector system failed causing fuel to be dumped into engine resulting in gasoline smell.

When consumer turns the air conditioner on there are gasoline fumes coming from of the vents.she has contacted the dealership.

The vehicle had a recall on the fuel rail which was repaired in 1999 by previous owner. Its blowing fuel onto the motor again. The same issue . It has 130k miles on it. When our mechanic looked at it we saw it was the same issue as the previous recall. The parts places we called said they do not sell the the recall kits to take to dealership.called dealership spoke with manager. They said the recall kits are in detroit and since the recall. L hs been repaired once it cant be repaired again. We called manufacturer. They said to go to a scrap yard to get part or call back dealership and advise them to order the kit and re do it and theres also another recall on it currently amd forbthe dealership to honor that recall also. We called back dealership and are currently waiting on a decision. They said they would get back to us today. We havent heard back. This is my only work vehicle. Noone sells the part because its a recall. It blowing fuel all over motor and im worried it will catch fire .

Consumer raised hood, andwhile consumer was under the hood, reached down to pick up anoil can and hood slammed shut, injuring consumer.

After removing the ignition key, from parked vehicle it rolled forward down a hill and smashed another vehicle. Vehicle was parked on level ground.the vehicle traveled a city block.the consumer believed the problem started after the recall on floor shifter was performed.

I am having problems with the transmission down shifting on it's own at low speeds. Also the vehicle keeps veering to the right and left. Have replaced the control arms two times due to break of bushings. The bolts attaching the steering rack do not keep it secured to the chassis and moves as the steering wheel is operated. There was a recall issued for the suspension control arm bracket in 1999. I have not been notified of this recall and need to know how to receive notification to have the part replaced. The vehicle's manufacture date on the driver's door indicates the manufacture date august/1995.

When shifting gearintodrivevehicle makes a humming noise, dealership is aware ofproblem.

The vehicle wasplaced in park and the consumer took the key out of the ignition and the vehicle rolled freely. Consumer states dealer repaired.

When puttingvehicle in drive and reverse there was a humming noise coming from underneathof vehicle. Dealershipwas aware ofproblem.

While driving vehicle there was a hesitation when accelerating. Took vehicle to dealer and they replaced the transmission.please provide any further information. Ts

Transmission is popping from drive to lowest gear at 45 mph and is causing the vehicle to stall. Consumerwill take vehicleto dealer for inspection. This has happened on several occasions.this times chrysler said it was the speed sensor and this last time the consumer it was told the solenoid.the car stalled on several occasions while on the highway doing speed in excess of 60 mph. *eh

1. Backing up from a parking place 2. Lower control arm bracket ripped away from the engine cradle and cause the cv joint to come apart and break.3. Replaced engine cradle, cv joint, front end alignment. I have pictures and old engine cradle.

After the replacement of cv joint boot, vehicle started to vibrate.vibrationcaused the tie rod endbushings to go bad. Dealer has inspectedvehicle, and will repair againat the owners expense.

The gen 3 seat belt system has been proven in a court of law to be defective. In fact, twice in our car the belt holding our sons has released while makinga sudden stop at low speed. We fell this belt needs to be investigated further by a federal agency to decide once and for all if these belts should be recalled.so far we have read reports on the internet by abc news prime time and aarca on their websites, so that may be a starting place for your investigation. If you decide to do so to back up our claim.**** dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis ****-759698.

Front brake rotors warped at 13000 miles and had to be replaced.they warped again at 23000 miles.the local service manager and chrysler in michigan say it is "normal wear and tear'.it is not reasonable to replace rotors every 10 - 12000 miles.

Upon test driving this vehicle i noted to the salesman that the brakes felt like they woudnt stop the car -they set up an appointment to check the brakes and relpace the hood shocks -upon keeping the appointment they replaced the hood shocks and let my wife leave w/o checking the brakes -a dodge technician told me chrysler has that no stop type of effect when they install value line brake pads-this concerns me -we now have a car we havnt made a payment on yet and now its close to totaled-others i know w/ this body style has experienced similar stopping problem-also it hit hard enough to brake the wheel assymbly and axle on right front and jambded both pass. Doors and the right rear quarter panel has to be cut completely out and replaced and the air bags did not employ- i bought it used w/low (43,000)miles and do not know if this car has been wrecked before or not, so i assume the air bags are still original, the leather around the pass. Side is peeling up arund the pocket the bag sits in this does make me wonder if it has been replaced or not - i am letting my insurance company deal with the dealer in case legal action needs to be taken-thank you so much for your time , accident could have resulted in deaths if it wasnt for the quick thinking of my wife -tanks again-rodneyd. Replaced rotors 3 times,at 11,000 mi. 20,894 mi. And now at 36,000 mi. Thats an average of 9,000 miles per set of rotors all due to warping and pitting. Company accepeted cost of one set of rotors but i had to pay labor costs of over $200.00 plus pads that were torn up due to pieces of the rotor breaking off. I did have an accident on jan.3 1999 traveling at 35 miles per hour the road was wet and a van backed up on fort street a main throughfare and my car did a 360 degree turn although i have a b s brake system , i don't know if the rotors had anything to do with that or not , however i do believe the manufacturer should have better componets than what they are putting on the braking system.

While driving noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Poppedhood up, and saw flames. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said that brake line broke, fluid was leaking, andthat started the fire.

Braking power waslost intermittently, pedal droppedto the floor.

While driving at a low speed in a parking garage the steering failed andthe vehicle could not be turned in either direction.the dealer determined that two half-inch bolts for the inner tie rod broke in the steering rack.the dealer replaced the steering rack and inner tie rod bushing. The consumer has the parts in his possession.

Steering has a lot of play, and is very loose.dealer found problem to be with the tierod ends, both inner.

Has loose play in steering wheel and started go off of the road for a moment while driving down the road..

Front end shaking and popping replaced tirerods a lowercontrol arms.

Drivers side front wheel lost control while turning left.car had to be towed. Diagnosing failure today. Believe either tie rod or steering box.if your steering wheel has any play would highly recommend not driving until having it looked at by mechanic. Lives could easily be lost at highway speeds.

While attempting to back into driveway, consumer lost control of the steering, the front wheels were completely independent of the steering wheel, and the front wheels were independent of each other, vehicle was towed and consumer was informed that the steering gear and and tie rod end needed to be replaced.

Failed bushings cause steering problems. No replacement part available!

Consumer noticed when turning the steering wheel to the left or the right, vehicle would not respond to the steering and continued to travel straight. Dealer and manufactured had been notified. Ts a popping noise was also associated with this condition.

1996 chrysler lhs, loose steering.discovered steering at risk of total failure, tie rod/rack & pinion bushing completely disintegrated.if not discovered in time, could have caused complete failure of steering due to bolt shearing, perhaps causing fatal or at the very least, extremely injurious accident..

1.cluncking,grinding, doesn't steer properly2.every time it's on the road 3.parts will be replaced when we have the money to do so.

Steering wheel has too much play in it due to a failure in thebushing.the bushing needs to be replaced ,but the part is on national back order.

The steering was very sensitive, it took little pressure to change direction of the wheels.

While driving the steering became uncontrollable. Dealer says the bushing was defective.

According to my independent chrysler mechanic, thesteering gear box disintegratedand became completely detached from the steering gear. The front wheels did not respond to the steering wheel; the car had no steering control.

Power steering went out.dealer determined that bushings on steering rack had worn out.

Power steering pump is leaking causing it to make noises.

I have been told by other owners that they have had the exact same problems with there lhs. I have bought several sets of tires because of this. Also i was told that the tie rods would wear out again.cost for repairs were 831.47. This is unreasonable for a car so new. I have never had such costly repairs onsuch a new car. This should be a recall. This is definatly a manufacture defect. After new repairs my car is already macking some of the previous sounds.somthing is not right.this could be dangerous.

Car has loose or wandering steering

Unable to contact manufacturer they were not interested they have no problem contact number or email contact.no safety defect listed in the summary.

Each of the failures occurring in my 1996 chrysler lhs has been costly. The failure of the o rings, the failure of the steering linkages, and lastly, the failure of the rack and pinion bushings. The critical failure of each of these components occurred with the items made of rubber.in the case of the rack & pinion, my mechanic finds it incredible that he cannot just replace the bushings.as it is he has to buy a new rack assembly + charge me for the labor and expense of removing and replacing the rack.i think that this is a manufacturers design defect, and should be paid for by daimlerchrysler!

Both inner tie rods came apart and were replaced. *mjs

My car was repaired at olson tire - store # 06-17 in port st lucie florida on may 11, 1999. My invoice says they replace a rack and pinion unitand a tie rod end at a cost of $1521.86 including labor and applicable taxes.on friday, oct 8, 1999, i was backing out of parking space when i heard a "clunk" i looked around saw that i did not hit anything and tried to pull forawrd. The car just rocked in place. I got out and saw that my d. Side tire was turned and the p.side tire was straight.bottom line was that the bolt that holds the rack in was sheered off (broke). According to what i have been told , these bolts just don't break. My warranty company will not pay for the repair beacuse a bolt is hardware??? and olson wanted to chrage me $300++++ to fix the problem. I am very concerned about this"bolt". Had i been drivingwhen this occurred , there could have benn some very serious consequences. Where do i go from here??

Inner tie rod ends only last realistically about 10,000 miles, become completely unserviceable in 20,000. I am sure chrysler is aware of this poor design/material problem. Additionally, the steering box also has problems with the mounting bushings. Be advised thati have replaced the inner tie rods twice, then the bushings when they became available in after market form. Chrysler, after my many complaints, replaced the tie rod ends(once again) and the steering box due to movement of the box due to bushing wear. Once again, the tie rod bushings need to be replaced. This car now has almost 80,000 miles. Isn't this ridiculous. Having at one time been a front end mechanic i know how dangerous this problem is. The car is a 1996 chrysler lhs. I expect some relief from this.

Tire rod end broken. Dealer wants 410.00 to repair part.

Vehicle experienced two difference incidents:first, while traveling on freeway at 70 mphtie rod end broke, causing loss of steering (no collision or injuries). Second incident occurred while traveling on the freeway at 60 mph, rack and pinion came locked due to valve failure and caused steering wheel to lock, almost causing a vehicle collision (again no damages to other vehicle or injuries received). On both occasions, repairs was done at consumer's cost. *ml

While drivingdrivers side tie rod endrattling due to tie rod wearing out. Consumer feels that the rod may fall off, and there will be no steering.

Still in need of repair, needs rack & pinion bushings, right outer tie rod end, already had inner tie rod replaced.

The tie rod ends wore out prematurely. Consumer stated he was going on the fourth set of tie rods at 125,000 miles.

After the replacement of cv joint boot, vehicle started to vibrate.vibrationcaused the tie rod endbushings to go bad. Dealer has inspectedvehicle, and will repair againat the owners expense.

Vehicle experienced steering wheel failure.*mr (nar)while driving both tie rod bolts broke.this caused the vehicle to continue on a straight path although the consumer was turning the wheel.the consumer feels that since the manufacturer knew about the faulty component that they should reimburse her for the amount of the repair.

When driving at high speeds tires would wobble and vibrate due to the bushing on the inner tie rodgoing bad. Dealer said the rack and pinion also needs to be replaced.

The problem started last year with a cold sqwak noise when steering the car.i had that fixed but the problem started again 9 months later and developed into a major problem.i had the car towed to the dealer because the steering seemed loose and i was having trouble controling it. They replaced the inner ti rods and sent me on my way.i returned the car a few days later after being told by another garage that the steering was still loose under the car.they then told me i needed a new rack and pinion steering replacement.i hesitated and took the car to another chrysler dealer for repairs.they told me the car needed outer ti rod replacement along with a wheel alingment and also that the inner ti rods were not installed properly.they also told me that this problem should have been diagnosed at the original dealership. This could have been a disaster if left to go unrepaired.after some research i found that this is not the only time there has been problems with the steering on these cars.i feel there has been some negligence on the part of the 1st dealer and also chrysler.i notified them after this started and they told me i was on my own.i had the car fixed but i think that this might be a design problem that should be addressed.

Inside tie rod bushing failed shortly after being saturated with anti-freeze from water pump failure.

Rack and pinion steering failed, steering will is not straight and the wheel pops and scrapes when turning the wheel.nlm

When driving at any speed steering wheel lockrd up, and consumer had no control. Thenrack pinion broke, causing one wheel to go to the right and one to the left. Consumer applied the brakes, and vehicle came to a stop.

I purchased a used 1996 chrysler lhs in august.when the weather turned cold, i noticed a "knocking" sound in the general vicinity of the right front tire upon turning the steering wheel soon after starting the car.after researching the problem online and being made aware of other similar symptoms that resulted in dangerous loss-of-steering situations, i took my car into my local chrysler service center.the car was diagnosed as having a "bad rack-and-pinion gear assembly." *la

In january 2002 a chrysler certified mechanic put bushings into my steering mechanism.i say put them there because the previous ones (less than 2 years old, had compeltely dissintegrated.in august of this year my husband was approaching the end of a freeway.when he braked to slow down, the bolt on the d side fell off and the steering mechanism fell apart.he was travelling approximately 55mph and had absolutely no control over the car at the moment the steering mechanism fell apart.it is a miracle there was no accident, injuries or deaths as he was swerving from one side of the highway to the other.the d side wheel was completely independent of the steering.

As we were turning into a parking lot, the car shuttered and then made a noise and felt like a flat tire. I stopped the car and looked for a flat and found none. The car then would barely go forward or backward and i had no steering control. Next morning, in daylight, front tires were aimed at a 90 degree variance. Bolts holding steering rack had sheered and bend/broke tie rods also. I see a similar previous report in your files. I do not know what would have happened in high speed situation!

The rack and pinion mounting bushings failed.nlm

Power rack and pinionbushing failed to where rack was moving when i turned the wheel giving the driver so much play in the steering it was hard to control the car i assume the front steering linkage which was prematurally worn also contributed to this uncontrollable steering.the left rear trrailing arm completly failed when it rust all the way thru causing the car to be uynsafe to do drive as the axile was splayed out and pushed back. I really give the milage of just 75000 that this was a premature complete failure of the suspension system and a very unsafe condition that could have had serious ramification had i not been able to bring this car under control. As for the a/c evaporator chrysler fixed trhat as well as the transmission and the recalled fuel rail.

Still in need of repair, needs rack & pinion bushings, right outer tie rod end, already had inner tie rod replaced.

When driving at high speeds tires would wobble and vibrate due to the bushing on the inner tie rodgoing bad. Dealer said the rack and pinion also needs to be replaced.

*ml

When turning at low speeds, the rack and pinion snapped and failed. The consumer lost steering control. The consumer managed to pull over and had the vehicle towed.please provide more information.

Steering gear failed by leaking steering fluid on inside bushings on tie rods. Bushings degenerated and suddenly had substatial play. Caused steering wheel to have about 4 inches of play and made car difficult to keep in the road even at low speeds. Car would veer left then right - causing oversteering just to keep it straight. Cost of repair has been estimated at $2,000. Dealer (jim cogdill dodge) says car is not drivable in current condition.

Power steering went out.dealer determined that bushings on steering rack had worn out.

While driving 15 mph the boltsthat hold the steering rack sheared off, nearly causing loss of vehcile control.pleasegive any further details.

I'd parked my 1996 chrysler lhs in a parking lot for a couple of hours on 7/10/2005. The vehicle has 95k miles on it. As i returned, and backed the vehicle up to exit the space, i heard a loud "pop". Suddenly the car no longer responded to steering. Upon examination, i found the inner tie rod bolts had sheared off where they connected to the steering gear. Both bolts had sheared off at the samelength, and the retaining plate was still in place, preventing the bolts fromloosening/rotating. If this had occured while i was driving down thefreeway, i'd be dead. I haven't had it repaired yet, but i've kept the old tie rod bolts. I don't knowhow easy i can get out the sheared ends from the steering gear, but i wouldsuspect it won't be in good shape when i finish.

Petitionfor investigation of 1996 chrysler lhs defective fuel rails.petition is to also investigate the abs and the frame construction/alignment.the vehilce's windshiled exploded on the driver's side below the windshield wipers.the vehicle's fuel rails leaked gasoline.the brake fluid in the master cylinder was contaminated.

1. Backing up from a parking place 2. Lower control arm bracket ripped away from the engine cradle and cause the cv joint to come apart and break.3. Replaced engine cradle, cv joint, front end alignment. I have pictures and old engine cradle.

Vehicle has been difficult to handle because of simultaneous failures of both the front struts and subframe bushings. Vehicle sways from side to side when accelerating, and has a rough ride.dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis--------769745.

How does one find out if this car has been in an accident?

Front end componentswore out and needed replacement. This included tie rods/ ball joints/axle, etc,.the cause of these failures had not b een determined, but this was a common problem with these vehicle.

Front tire vibrates up an down at low speeds.sometimes it's hard to control vehicle, mostly whenslowing down. Consumer feels this is unsafe. Please provide any further information.

I bought a 96 lhs in sept 2006 and knew i needed to do some front end work. What i didn't know was everything associated with the front end would need to be replaced. Tie rods, ball joint, hub bearings, control arm bushings, boots (axles) transmission mounts.i can't begin to remember all the parts i have replaced. Now today after another trip to the repair shop i am informed the rack and pinion is shot. After all the work that has been done still rides like a tractor. There are websites full of the same stories about dodge/chrysler and nobody can make these people clean this mess up? and we keep giving them billions of our tax dollars. My next letter will be to my senator and representatives trying to stop anymore tax dollars going chrysler's way.

1.cluncking,grinding, doesn't steer properly2.every time it's on the road 3.parts will be replaced when we have the money to do so.

While driving at any speed there would beheavy vibration in the steering wheel.dealership replaced the struts, but the problem recurred.

Failed bushings cause steering problems. No replacement part available!

Cruise control failure, vehicle was at complete stop, vehcile lurched forward and impacted vehicle at 12:00 position.

The vehicle jumped forward and run out o control upon starting and engaging the drive gear, crashed into store front. . yh

Cruise control failed.

While driving on freeway consumer put speed control on 70 mph. The consumer then tried to disengage the speed control but could not do so because speed control resumed on its own. The consumer then, in order to turn off speed control, had to put the car in neutral and hit the emergency brake. Consumer took car to dealership, replaced speed control module.
