My 1998 chevrolet venture was in an accident sustaining major damage.there was a direct hit to the right headlamp with the pole and the van ended up landing on the driver's side skidding on the road.none of the 4 airbags deployed.has there been a recall on them or has there been any other complaints about this vehicle?

Airbag light stays on.

Windshield wipers intermittently go off by themselves when hitting a normal bump in the road, and when the front/rear heater or air conditioner controls are used. In addition, driver's information message centerin the extended overhead console has never worked properly. Temperature gauge increases at least 1/8 to 1/4 inches and stayes there. Air bag wires are still exposed to rea rpassenger's seat. Drover's/passengers door locksfailed. Headlights go off by themselves every 10 seconds. Finally, evaporative emission canister failed prior to recall. 780180 dup of 533715; posted on 09-07-1999.

Dt*:the contact stated after pulling into a parking space and straightening the steering wheel, the steering wheel rack and pinion fractured without warning. Soon after, the airbag light illuminated.the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who confirmed the steering rack and pinion fracture.the repair shop also determined due to the unique fracture of the rack and pinion and the illumination of the airbag warning light, the airbag should have deployed.the manufacturer was not alerted.

Intermittent operation of windshield wipers. In addition, all electronics on dashboard goes on and off/headlights go off by themselves every 10 seconds/driver's controls for door locks failed/evaporative emission canister vend solenoid valve assembly failed prior to manufacturer's recall/poor idling and vehicle is sluggish/driver's information center fails to work properly, and air bag wires are still exposed to rear passengers' feet.

Van was traveling at approx 65 mph..ford quad cab truck pulled out in front of me..i locked the brakes, some skid marks down the highway, and completely broadsided the truck. Damage to truck was on driver side door, and front corner panel. Several of trucks airbags deployed. Impact was at a high speed. Injuries to myself and passenger, neck, shoulder, knee, wrist, ankle, not fatal, thank goodness. Passenger of truck, injuries unknown. Truck was at fault in accident.

Air bag light intermittently comes on. When light comes on, air bag system is shut down so if there is an accident, air bag will not deploy. Van is going in for the 6th time to have this fixed. This has been an on going problem since 1 month after purchase. Gmc will not buy back van and this is a major safety issue as van is uncomfortable to drive with fear of theair bag not deploying in case of an accident. Looking into filing lemon law as safety is #1 priority, gmc doesn't seem to care. ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis****761634

The vehicle was parked in the driveway with the key removed when smoke began emitting from the passenger door area filled the interior cabin.the passenger side air bag then deployed without warning.*nlm

Without prior warning while vehicle was sitting at a stop light. Another vehicle hitconsumer'svehicle from behind on a 45 mph impact. Upon impact, driver side and passenger side airbags did not deploy.

The "pretensioner" of the seatbelt system on my 1998 chevrolet venture has failed now for the third time.according to the dealer this means the restraint system will not function properly in the event of a crash.the alert light that warns of trouble in the air bag system seems to revert to normal after a couple of weeks, butwhen the dealer uses the proper test equipment it can be determined the unit has failed.it seems likely that many ventures are being used with failed pretensioners and their owners are unaware of the issue since all indications from the alert light is that the air bag system is functioning properly.this is the third time this issue has happened on my vehicle in less than five years and chevrolet customer assistance is refusing to address the issue.

Airbag light stayed onfor a while.this was an indication that the front passenger side air bag may or may not deploy. Dealer was contacted.

While traveling east approximately 35-40mph,another vehicle traveling west, entered eastbound lane. Both vehicles collided head-onon driver's side. Upon impact, neither air bag deployed.driver's seat belt was intact, but driver suffered minor injuries. Children, in rear, sustained some bruises from seat belts, but no treatment. Vehicle was totaled.

Passenger side front and side impact at 35 mph, neither front nor side air bag deployed. Vehicle was totalled.ts

While driving, consumer crashed into a semi tractor trailer who failed to yield while making a left hand turn, the air bags did not experience deployment, causing consumer to sustain several injuries, consumer continues to have complications because of this accident, consumer was informed that the air bags acted as they should by not deploying.

When driving at 30mph truck stopped and vehicle went under it, frontal impact, neither air bag deployed, driver was injured. Dealer contacted and aware of the problem. Police report filed. *ml

While driving at 50 mph had a frontal impact, and driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy which did not protect the occupant in this accident.please provide further information.

While driving at 40 mph vehicle was invovled in a frontal collision. Upon impact, none of the frontal air bags deployed.driver and passenger sustained minor bumps and brusies.

While traveling 40mph as aresult of an ccident driver's air bag did not deploy. Driver sustaine dinjuries.

Was driving at approximately 40 mph and hit another vehicle withfront end. Upon impact, ,dual airbags did not deploywhich could have caused injuires.no indicationof defect.

The consumer had accident and was seriously injured as the result of the air bags failure to deploy.doors do not open driver has to manually open the door.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 45mph , upon impact, airbags did not deploy, resulting in minor injuries. Manufacturer has been notified.

Consumerwas driving on highway at approximately 45 mph on wet road condition all of a sudden another vehicle tried to cut in front of consumer, causing consumer to hit vehicle on passenger's side. Consumer vehicle's air bags did not deploy.

Airbag light comes on indicating a problem with the airbag.chevy diagnosed and repaired on six separate occasions over the next four years, but in each case the problem returned within a month or two.the airbag has not worked properly since this date, according to the indicator light, except for short time periods after repair.we have asked chevy to find a permanent solution with no success.*la

Air bag warning lights came on and stayed on.the consumer stated the air bag light illuminated shortly after the vehicle was purchased. The dealer repaired it, however two weeks later the light illuminated again.the consumer was told the air bag module on the passenger side was bad. Also the vehicle had brake problems.

While pulling into the driveway less then 5 mph passenger's side air bag deployed inadvertently, and caused the automatic button to ricochetto the back of the vehicle ( with two child in css in rear seat).also, air bag punctured from the attachment which the button was attach to. Dealer/manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide further details.

Side passenger and driver air bags were reported to us by service department at dealership to be defective, after the vehicle was taken in for another recall and i asked them to check out why the airbag light stayed on nearly continuously. This is a problem that the vehicle has had 3-4 months since we took ownership.the vehicle was taken once to the dealer (5/14/1999) and we asked the dealership to check out the problem. The vehicle was returned and it was noted that codes were checked and that customer concern not duplicated.we are concerned that because the airbags are defective we could receive more serious injury in the event of an accident.

I reported a defect last week on my integral child safety seat - the latch which goes across the child's chest pops open when pulled on - since then i have been told by bob tagg the service manager for lawrence hall chevrolet that the safety restraints on the new chevy venture vans do the same thing - and therefore they will not replace mine.i was horrified to find that there are thousands of children on the road whose parents (like i was) thinking that their child is safely strapped in and they are far from it.i implore you to please check into this defect for the welfare of these children.

Consumer is unable to put a css facing foward in rear bucket seat of vehicle. Dealer/manufacturer. Notified and unable to resolved the problem. Consumer will be sending a copy of a video for odi concerning this problem.

3-year old child undid the css witout pushing the release button. The buckle at the chest could be undone without pinching in the side clasps. Dealer determined it was a design flaw.

The built in child safety restraints in the middle seats of the van are defective.the latch which goes across the child's chest, pops open when tugged on.this occurs on both restraints (one restraint has not been used) which makes me believe that it is a manufacturer's defect.

The vehicle was parked in the driveway with the key removed when smoke began emitting from the passenger door area filled the interior cabin.the passenger side air bag then deployed without warning.*nlm

While applying the brake pedal the hazard lights turned on its own and the brake light failed.the abs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.the driver will contact the dealer in the near future.the right tail light did not work properly, when the right turn signal on the brake pedal was applied, the directional signal flashed twice as fast as normal, but when the brake pedal was released, the directional signal flashed normal, also when the brakes were applied, both directional indicators on the instrument panel stayed on until the brake pedal was released, the abs and tcs warning light had come on and stayed on until it was reset, around the same time the blower for the heat and air conditioning lost both the first and second speeds, the door lock cycle was intermittent and the consumer was locked out of the vehicle, the power sliding door had become inoperative and the brakes failed many times. *sc

Power sliding door buzzer sometimes sounds although the doors are closed. I have to disable the powerswitch and slam the door to continue.

The key was in the ignition when the sliding door closed and locked all the doors. Dealer notified.

Electrical system:when driving thru puddles/hard rain battery light on, loss of all steering/brakes/etc and then power "pops" back on-do not need to restart engine. Has occurred at stop and while driving. Dangerousin regards to instrument panel:engine coolant light comes off/on, coolant levels normal, car not overheating-will see dealer; at same time air bag deployment light on same side of panel comes off/on at intermittent times. Sometimes engine coolant light and airbag light are on at same times, sometimes they alternate. Seriously think there is wiring defect in vehicle. Also--instrument panel very hot to touch at radio area, high risk to burn. Also, have experienced flickering of overhead interior lights when key removed from ignition--not the normal "stay on for so many seconds"?wiring problem will seek dealer attention, but of course out of warranty and concern of family safety is 1st and foremost.any info you have to asst is appreciated.

While driving in the rain power steering would lock up. Would have no warning. Not able to control vehicle when this has happened for a few minutes. Also, battery light would come on. Had been to dealer & mechanic could not locate cause of problem.

Battery failed.

Was driving at night whenheadlights & allinstrument panel lights went out. After a couple of minutes would come back on by them selves. Did not tamper with the light swtich. Took vehicle to 2 different dealership where one of them did repairs, but problem reappeared. Both mechanics indicated to bring vehicle back when it happened again.the dealer put in new generator and the problem has not reoccured.

Alternator failed without warning causing the vehicle to stall.

After going through puddles everything would shut down or not work properly. Power steering is difficult/fan belt slips after getting wet/ alternator would quit working. Also, no protection cover to prevent water splashing. Taking to dealer to check out. Abs light keeps going off. *mjs

Horn requires a tremendousamount of force to beep. Which is dangerous in an emergency situation.

The horn requires an inordinate amount of force to get it to operate due to its design.

Horn requires a significant amount of pressure to work.

Design of the horn button is located under the air bag causing difficulty in operation, excessive force required to activate.

Horn can not be activated by consumer without extreme force due to its design.

Horn button is too hard to operate, much harder to depress than normal, causing safety hazard.

Horn not easy to operate, requires pressing very hard.yh

Horn takes excessive physical effort to sound, due to design.

When attempting to depress the horn pad it is very difficultto sound the horn off.consumerneedsto apply extreme force to sound the horn off.has reported problem to manufacturer.

Horn is impossible to blow in an emergency.dealer instructed how to operate contrary to manual.

Horn assembly does not work. The dealer has been notified.

Horn isn't working properly due to the location of the air bag and the horn is hard to use.

Horn is extremely difficult to operate.dealer unable to repair.tested similar new vehicles on dealers lot and found all had same problem.

The horn button is to difficult to depress, causing safety hazard.

Service engine soon light states evap problem. Stinky emissions but dealer found no problem after i paid $162. Reset light several times but the same problem reappears after a few days.

I own a 1998 chevy venture with the 3.4l engine.i am constantly loosing antifreeze and oil disappears with explanation.i am still under a warranty but the dealership says it cant find anything wrong with it.i am concerned that my engine might seize or fail while driving down the interstate due to a design flaw in the intake manifold gasket.the coolany that chevy uses dexcool has been known to eat away the gaskets, so large a scale has this happened that gm has switched coolants to prestone extended life.i want a recall done free of charge to fix this problem.it is definitly a safety issue as most have complained about cams breaking and loss of power.someone is going to die because of this.

Anti-look brake system light came on and stayed on.other lights are now flashing whem brakes are used.the main brake, signal and running lights have stipped working.the only brake lights working now are the led lights on the rear door.system is acting like it has a short or grounding condition.unable to use this vehicle and is parked.unable to repair this due to being on a fixed income.vehicle was inspected and past the last part of april 2004.

Consumer states van will crank but will not start, the check engine light is on and the vehicle stalled at least 20 times.fuel pump was replaced 4 times.dealership inspected and reported original problem was no fuel pressure traced to no operation of fuel pump.found wiring harness at fuel pump had come loose.after harness was reconnected the van started right up.advised that connector 305 and ground 301 have a history of intermittent problems and itnernal opens that cause no start conditions.

Sensor and panel lights stay on, dealer found a wire chafed under dash panel making the lights stay on.

Rear windshield wiper goes off when shutting the automatic passenger door/all electronics an dashboard goes off when using headlight controls/headlights goes off by themselves every 10 seconds/driver's control for door locks has completely gone out/evaporative emission canister vend solenoid valve assembly failed prior to recall, van is not idling properly.

2 major wiring harness melted, replaced with wrong harness.. No cause found and dealer said it was ok for them to put wrong harness in!!! took original dealer 2+ weeks to fix and it was still not correct.i took it to my dealer and they spliced in new wires to make rear speakers work.they informed me the harness was from another model venture but it was ok. Contacted chevrolet by phone and letter and they were no help.they told me to work it out with the dealer.

I have a 1998 chevrolet venturewith82,651 miles. The vehicle wouldslowly dissipate coolant, which i replenished as needed. Then a major coolant leak occurred at the engine block.barnard chevrolet of churchville, ny 14428 repaired the lower and upper intake manifold gaskets, and the rear head gasket.each had detiorated from the dex cool, causing the leakage.the dealership refused any customer assistance, despite my providing them with technical service bulletin #03-06-01-010.although the dealer provided a complete and professional repair, i believe that evidence is quite clear that the dex cool coolant and the gasket materials used by gm results in a defective product, and that gm must pay for these repairs.i also believe that that nhtsa has a responsibility to the american consumer to hold gm accountable. The bush administration seems to have completely suppressed this issuein terms of government followup.whata shame, the lobbyists win again. Middle class americans left with the bill.

Intake manifold gasket leak and engine seal leak on a vehicle that has been serviced exactly as recommended in the owner's manual.simple internet research (including this webiste) has shown a pattern of failure for these parts on this vehicle.gm customer service acknowldged problem but would not pay any of the $1,200 repair bill since the vehicle has 80,000 miles on it.this is a huge out-of-pocket expense for a part with a history of problems.i personally know two other 1998 venture owners who have had the same repair.

Leaking coolant led to engine failure. Gm and dealership try to shift blame to me. They say there is no problem. The vehicle just stopped in the middle of the road. I had to push it to the side of a busy street with a small child inside. The engine oil filled with anti freeze and ceased up without warning. It had been to the dealership to have the low coolant light checked and they just added stop leak and said it would be fine. The lower intake manifold gasket was leaking. This has been well documented for over a year but gm is still in denial. My 1998 chevy venture was purchased used in september 2001.the vehicle only had 40,000 miles on it. I brought it to the dealership in sept. 2002 for 15 point inspection and oil change at about 45,000 miles. This was last day under warranty. In january 2003 the low coolant light came on. I checked the coolant level at it looked almost dry. There was no prior evidence like stains on my driveway.they said good thing i brought it in right away and flushed and filled it and said there was a small leak in one of the gaskets and added stop leak. In may the engine seized up and i needed to replace the engine with a rebuilt one at a cost of $4000.00. The vehicle has less than 50000 miles on it.the dealership and gm assistance claim no knowledge of this. In july my neighbor who owns a 2000 chevy silhouette has the same thing happen and needs his engine replaced. A friend of mine says he had his gasket fixed while under warranty.please help me and the thousands of others who have been hurt because gm refuses to accept responsibility for what is obviously a manufacturing defect. I feel the only option that i have is to go to small claims court where i probably won't have a chance against general motor?s lawyers. I have a couple of web sites that have been sort of like my support group since my engine failed. I don't know if you are aware of any of them.

98 chev venture with 60k blown eng.due to defective intake gasketwhich gm wont recall.100k antifreeze sludged at 30k.over 70,000intake gasket backoredered at one time.nov of2002 modelshave updated improved gasket why should public that kept upon thier maint have to pay for design flaw.100s of web sites on this issue exsist.

I had the coolant flushed one month ago at the local dealer.driving on the freeway near home, the low coolant light came on.no indication on temperature gauge that coolant temp ever exceeded even halfway through the normal range.the next morning, the van runs rough and has a light coolant smell from the exhaust.took it to dealer for diagnosis.dealer said that the intake manifold gaskets failed allowing the van to overheat and blow the head gaskets.repair estimate is $2500 and with only 88k miles on the van.this is the second time that the intake manifold gaskets have failed.first time the intake gaskets failed was at 45k miles right after i bought it.there was no overheat or head gasket failure on the first incidence.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet venture.while idling in traffic or on an incline, the heat temperature gauge fluctuates.the vehicle is also losing antifreeze.the contact has been adding one half gallon of antifreeze per month and does not know why.when the weather becomes warmer, the check engine light illuminates sporadically.the light does not illuminate in the winter.the purchase date and powertrain were unknown.the current mileage was 160,000 and failure mileage was 130,000.

Kept loosing coolant - initial pressure test did not detect leak. Asked them to check intake manifold & gaskets. They detected leak. Cost to repair - 673.00. Do not know yet if any damage was done to engine.

Engine coolant is leaking into engine.suspect bad intake manifold gasket, after exhaustive research on web.

The engine and several components had to be replaced due to sludging of the engine coolant, the heater system stopped working, due to coolant had sludged up causing clogged components in the heating/cooling system, also the vehicle overheated, there was corrison in the radiator, the thermostat was replaced, there was a leaking intake manifold gasket, consumer believes that manufacturer should have covered the entire bill instead of half.

Heater not working due to a faulty manifold gasket that allowed the coolant to leak out of the engine of our 1998 chevrolet venture. I was told by the service tech that gm is now producing a better gasket to fix the problem. That's great!! i would like gm to pay the $798.67 bill for having to replace the first gasket that was not properly tested by engineering. This problem is very common, and should be a recall item.

At 60,000 miles my chevrolet venture started to leak coolant and i took it to my local chevrolet dealer and they said that the intake manifiold gasket needed replacement. Cost approx. $800.00 including cooling system flush and tax.dealer said that gm was not paying for all or part of the repair and in fact they have not commented to it's dealers about the failure of the intake manifold gaskets at all.obviously gm does not want to admit a problem with the 3.4l engine. My research finds that this is a very common and costly problem with these vehicles.

Leaking intake manifold gasket leak.leaking coolant.repair estimated to be $800 by elco chevrolet in ballwin, missouri.we discovered through research on the internet and talking to mechanics at a local auto repair franchise that this has been a problem with the chevy venture vans. We are looking for relief from gm-this is not the first problem we have had with coolant leaks in the van and are now wondering if this problem was undetected and we have been repairing other items needlessly (water pump, etc.) when this was the true source of the problem.we are very concerned about the future of the engine on this vehicle with this problem.

I noticed that the vehicles coolant level had been dropping over a period of severla weeks. After having it tested it was discovered that the lower intake manilfold had a slow leak and needed replaced. The vehicle had less than 70,000 miles on it and it seems very unusual for this to happen so soon.

Since purchasing this van i have had numerous problems, with the most recent being an engine replacement.this problem stems from the bad design of gm's intake gasket which breaks down and causes anti-freeze to leak into the engine causing premature wear and/or replacement.

1998 chevy venture, 77000 miles, no warning, engine light came on, pulled over, engine tapping & smoking.walked 1.2 miles on interstate, 8 miles to exit, tookride from unknown couple.had van towed, diagnosed: collasped intake gasket caused rod to go through engine.dealership & gm refused to help. Repeatable problem with gasket easily located on internet, overwelmed by severity.

1998 chevy venture, engine light came on, pulled over engine tapping & smoking.no oil light or change in temp, gauge observed.had to walk on interstate 1.2 miles took ride from unknown couple, had van towed.diagnoses was: intake gasket collapsed, causing connecting rod to go through engine. Dealership & gm customer care refused any assistance.overwelmed by severity of this gasket problem readily available on the internet.we replaced our engine with a used one, that is all we could afford. It definitely was the faulty gasket that caused our engine to be replaced.when this first happened, no dummy light came on, nothing to even tell me there was a problem, such as low oil or service engine.the mechanic who replaced our engine told us he has seen several chevy venture vans with the same exact problem we had.we had the servive done at d&n garage 4929 south m-76 west branch, mi 48661, the owner is nelson smith.the phone # is 1 800 203 8504.it cost us almost $1600.to replace the engine, we lucked out finding one that had only 40,000 miles on it.nelson made sure to put the new gasket on this engine.the gm dealership here refused to help. Where we bought the van refused to help, the gm helpline just very rudely told me it was my problem.

Current problem is leaking coolant with ticking sound in engine at startup until engine is warm.diagnosed by dealer as blown head and intake gaskets.estimated cost is $1300 for gasket replacement and another $660 if head is cracked.mileage is 83350.many other reports exist of this problem in chevrolet ventures with some leading to engine failure.3.4l v6.

Consumer complainingabout the engine light working intermittently. Dealer has inspected the vehicle on several occasion. And could not duplicateor correct the problem. Please provide further information.ph

1998 chevrolet venture. Intake manifold gasket went bad and got coolant in my engine. Had to replace water pump also. Cost 927.35 to replace. I feel gm should make this item a recall as i havefound numerous web sites with people that have the same problem with all sorts of gm vehicles.

Water build up into the front head lights and water build up in the engine.had to replace lights and engineafter lights were replaced we had to drill a hold below the light covers so that water build up can drain from hole.had to replace the engine.

Coolant leak in 1998 chevy venture minivan.faulty intake gasket.

My 1998 chev venture was getting coolant into the motor oil which caused it to start ticking.i took it to the dealer and they said it was the intake gasket. They fixed the problem which cost me $1500.00. Three months later the engine blew up .i had to get a reman.engine which cost $4000.00.i feel because of the faulty gasket this lead to my engine problem.

Car began losing coolant at about 20000 miles. Had to keep topping coolant tank. Presented to local dealer at 35,500 miles to be repaired. Coolant sensor replaced, problem persisted. Wife's car (1999 venture) began having same symptom, researched and found that this is a widespread problem with intake manifold gaskets (recently redesigned by gm). This problem can allow coolant to mix with oil, and oil with coolant. Can result in sudden catastrophic engine failure (camshaft breaks due to insufficient lubrication). Stranded vehicles will present multiple safety hazards.

I bought my 1998 venture in nov. Of 2001. It had 66000 on it.it seemed to have the smell of antifreeze. In december of 2002 someone told us that the gaskets were noted for leaking.my husband replaced it, and gave it an oil change in feb. It was thick and dark orange in color. It started knocking when you accelerated. So once again my husband has it torn apart and found the crank shaft is coming apart due to the antifreeze leaking into the engine. Now i am paying on a dead horse. We can't afford to get it repaired. It would be nice if gm would recall this.

The 1997-2000 venutures have problems with the engines, the intake gasket breaks down causing anti freeze to mix with the engines oil causing the cam shaft to crack, in our case there was no leaks under the van and there was no warning either the van was running well that morning and when my wife was driving down the street there was 2 short bukles from the van and everything shut down including steering which was difficult to do, is it going to take someones family to die on the side of the road before gm will do anything about this if my wife had been on the highway then there would be no way that she would have made it without being hit, even then she had 3 young children in the van ages 3-8 and was almost hit from behind, because it was an industrial highway speed limit of 50mph and not much room on the shoulder to park. There are many complaints about these vans and yet no one seems to be doing anything. This website has complaint after complaint, www. Complaints.com and www.gm-v6lemons.com has hundreds of complaints along with other websites of people experancing the same problem. How many people have to die before anything is done? gm doesn't seem to care even though their dealerships have stated their is a problem with the engines. Engine shut off and failure are serious problems .

Total engine failure caused by faulty gaskets allowing coolant to leak into engine resulting in camshaft breaking.this is a classic problem on 3.4l engine, occurring on most affected vehicles between 50k and 60k miles.

Developed engine coolant (dex-cool)leak at intake manifold. Dealer mechanic stated that the repair will cost $500.00 to replace the $3.00 gasket. Also stated that this was a common problem.

Cam shaft just broke.

The upper and lower intake gaskets were leaking coolant and oil onto the engine. This resulted in vehicle overheating, and burning up the engine motor.also, fuel injectors had to be cleaned numerous times due to them misfiring.

The intake gasket on my 98 venture failed and leaked dexcool into the engine. The engine temp fluctuated and the vehicle overheated damaging the head gasket. I see gm is ignoring the issue as well as nhtsa. There is however a law firm in putting together a class action suit for this problem. I encourage all to join in the suit and to leave gm and become loyal honda owners.

My family and i were on vacation driving from butler, pa to cape canaveral, florida. I was driving on i-95 near savannah, ga on june 26th when i noticed my temperture gauge was moving up and down. Car never boiled over or loss any anti-freeze. I stopped at a pep boys repair shop at which time they advised me that my thermostat needed replacement. It appeared the dex-cool antifreeze that gm requires to be used turns into a sludge at high temperatures. Entire cooling system was sludged up by the dex-cool. After installing new thermostat and anit-freeze engine was idling rough. Car was taken to chevrolet dealer nearby - chevrolet dealer said engine needed replacement. - anti-freeze was entering cylinders #1 and #2. Chevrolet dealer charged over $6,000. I feel chevrolet dealer overcharged as i was traveling from out of state - my local chevrolet dealer quoted $3,700 for same work. My local mechanic advised me it's common knowledge that dex-cool is a defective product that has ruined many engines, radiators, heater cores and thermostats - gm refuses to acknowledge the problem while the damage continues. My vehicle was purchased new by me - garage kept - well maintained - 112,000 miles at time of failure.

I am going to need to repair my minivan due to the problem with the coolant leak and i really can not afford this and may have to have the van sit until i can. I cannot believe after all the complaints i have read on here that there is not a recall on this or the headlights. I will not purchase another chevy vehicle again because this is a costly repair that is not the consumers responsibility, its obvious that this needs a recall. I do hope you come to your senses about this costly repair to the consumers because i will let every one i possible know that chevy knows about this costly problem but refuses to accept responsibility as i am sure others that have this problem have told numerous people and you sales will drop so low that you will wish you would have had a recall.

Low coolant light came on while wife was driving and she said temperature gauge soared then dropped, she pulled out and drove again and it soared then dropped again along with low coolant light.saw on the internet this is common for 1998 chevy venture and others.a lot of minivans with kids and spouses out there encountering this.i checked the engine upon arrival and think it may be an intake manifold gasket failure and have contacted a local service representative.*la

Venture was making a smell that i remembered from my 95 chevy lumina. Pull over realized the same thing was going on with this van. Coolant going into engine. Thisvan only had 51,652 miles on for a 98 that is great i took very good care of it and chevy lost a customer for life. We were looking a tahoe but i would even look at it now chevy is the worst car maker out there but then again they are making me now look a toyota, honda in a whole new light.

1998 chevrolet venture with 41,000 miles taken for oil change where low coolant condition was noted.gm dealership replaced lower intake gasket.this is the second gasket put on this car.the original gasket was replaced at approximately 15,000 miles. *nlm

The consumer noticed that his vehicle was leaking antifreeze, and when he turned his vehicle off there was no pressure in the radiator.the consumer took his vehicle to the dealer and was told that the vehicle had a leaking intake manifold gasket.after testing the vehicle the dealer indicated that the repair would cost$678.00 plus tax.*nlm

I bought my 1998 venture in july. Of 2001. It had 67000 on it. It seemed to have the smell of antifreeze. In june of 2003our vans intake gasket burst causing coolant to leak into the engine. Apparently this is not unusual plus to make matters worse the average repair bill is at least 6.6 hours long just for the gasket not including any damage done to the cam shaft (which is hollow in this motor) i would like to see a class action lawsuit against gm on this matter. *nlm

Leaking coolant in 1998 chevrolet venture van w/ 3400sfi v6 engine diagnosed by dealer as "blown head and intake gaskets; may have cracked head, won't know until opened up. Estimated repair cost of $1300 for replacement of gaskets and another $660 if head is cracked."no action yet taken by consumer 1/3/2003.many other reports of this problem noted by owners. Ts

I had my van in the shop because my heater quit working. The thermostat was changed. When i got the van back the heater didn't work and by the next morning the coolant reservoir was empty. Their weren't any external leaks noted. I took it back into the shop and he ran some checks and he stated that it was the intake manifold gasket and that the coolant was leaking internally.he also said that this was a common problem with most gm engines. Now my van is parked and i can't even drive it. It is knocking real loud and i am afraid to drive it because i have found out that this problem can lead to the van eventually catching on fire. My van had been in the chevrolet shop several times for the engine light coming on and it was running rough. I was told that the light was on because the gas cap wasn't on tight. My van is just out of the warranty at @ 82,000 miles. I hear that the gasket in question is on national back order do the excess amount of gm vehicles with the same problem. *nlm

Gm has issued a service bulletin number: 03-06-01-010 in march 2003.this bulletin affects my chevrolet venture van and will cost me between $600 and $1500 to repair.talking to the dealer indicates to me that there are a considerable number of chevy's with this problem.

1998 chevy venture mini-van. Have had to replace the radiator (now twice) due to overheating caused by "sludge" in the cooling system. Also, mechanic reports a coolant leakage in intake manifold gasket, which apparently is a well-known problem. Have only put dexcool in system, so wonder where sludge came from. Have not had gasket repaired yet because i think gm should do it for free.

Dt:consumer owns a 1998 chevrolet venture. At 55000 miles the intake manifold gasket went out.the vehicle was maintained immaculately. This happened in october 2003. Vehicle was fixed by a dealer on october 10, 2003. He then checked the internet to find that this was a common problem due to a coolant that the manufacturer used. On july 2, 2005 the head gasket failedsuddenly, vehicle had 75,000 miles. This was two weeks after a garage had done a 75000 mile check up on vehicle. Well over $40000 was spent.he did further research on the internet to find many other complaints on this issue. He felt this wa a safety issue, and it wasendangering the life of his family. He contacted manufacturer, and was told that they would call him back, after not being called back by themanufacturer and him calling manufacture often back they finally made him an offer of a discount on something. He refused the offer,. He felt that the offer was not near what he had spent on repairs that manufacture should have paid for repairs.

Low coolant light comes on and off and coolant over-flow is consantley empty with a residue left behind. Low coolant light started coming on at approx.48000; present mileage 58830. Within the last 2 months i have noticed coolant on my driveway and in my garage. Temperature guage also show signs of over heat.

For the 2nd time since the date noted below, i am experiencing intake manifold failure on my 1998 chevy venture.in 2003 it was replaced while the vehicle was still under warranty at 34,000 miles.now, just shy of 2 years later, and at 53,000 (at my own expense and a cost of $1200.00)) it needs to be replaced again.the reason i am contacting you at this time is that gm does not recognize this as a recallable issue with their vehicles.i spoke with glen kuniyuki on 12/7/05, and sylvia jabouin on 12/8/05, at gm customer service.they said that since this was not a recallable issue and until such time that the nhtsa made them recall the vehicles involved, that they simply were not going to recognize that this is a common problem to gm models, and recommended trading it in for a newer model.while researching this problem, i found several websites where many other gm customers are experiencing the same repetitive problem with no satisfaction from the manufacturer.i am providing you with only four, but there are many out there.(http://forum.freeadvice.com/archive/index.php/t-194703.htmlhttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_intake_manifold.htmlhttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_dexcool.htmlhttp://sfdiscussions.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=lemon&action=display&thread=1089240579)your attention and response to this matter will be anxiously awaited.

At 57,000 mi my 1998 chevrolet venture developed a coolant leak at the intake manifold on the drivers side of the engine. I was quoted a $500.00 estimate to replace the $3.00 gasket and the mechanic at the dealership stated that he sees a lot of these leaks and that this is very common. Ts

I had to have a gasket leak on the intake manifold repaired.i understand this is a problem since 1995 occurring in approximately 1 out of 30 vehicles according to my current dealership.my previous mechanic of 15 years (a chevy mechanic for 26 years) also said gm is aware of this frequent gasket leak.i called chevy in detroit to ask for financial assistance for my $1,070 repair and they turned me down due to lack of evidence of a problem.

Intake gasket leaking.

For about a year radiator fanfailed, and consumer hadto replace radiator twice.radiatorfan stopped working, and radiator overheated.

Coolant was "sludgy" and dealer attributed this sludge to third party oil shops using wrong radiator fluid.dealer claimed this wrong radiator fluid sludged up and ate through intake gasket.$647.19 to repair gasket.

The intake manifold gasket leaked coolant onto the engine, which resulted in engine failure.

2 fuel pumps, now motor.

Intake manifold gasket problems on 1998 chevrolet venture 3.4l.dealer informed me at approx. 58000 miles gasket was failing.replaced 06/02. Same dealer informed same gasket problems at 94000 miles.have heard of similar problems on other gm products, very common.would like to see gm held responsible for poor design of gasket, will never buy gm product again.

While driving the vehicle jerked back and forth. Dealer stated there was a crack in the crankcase.

The contact owns a 1998 chevy venture. While driving 35 mph the vehicleshut off when approachinga traffic light or stop sign. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle.it was towed to the mechanic, who was unable to diagnose theause of the problem , and recommended the vehicle be diagnosed by the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that there was a bar inside the engine thatbroke, and therewas also corrosion in the engine. The dealer stated that the engine neededto be replaced. The vehicle currently has 14, 4000 miles.

The van over heated and left me stranded on the freeway because the plastic intake manifold gasket melted.

'98 chevy venture only has 51,000 miles and has been maintained regularly by dealer.recently had intake manifold gaskets replaced due to leak of coolant into crankcase at a cost over $1,000.engine is knocking and now needs replacement with expected cost of over $5,000.so far, no financial consideration given by gm.

Driving down the highway my van over heated and stalled with no prior warning.i had to replace my head gaskets, lower intake, all my spark plugs and spark plug wires.i had no leaks that i was aware of.nothing on the gorund to even suspect a leak. Apparently i was leaking so bad internally that 2 of my spark plugs crapped out and my van refused to run.from what i read this is a fairly common complaint among venture owners.i really love my van but this flaw will prevent me from buying another one, which i fully intended on doing in a few year.sorry gm but i'll go with a honda next time.

I backed the van out ofmy driveway at home and placed the car into drive.as i started to move forward, the gas pedal felt harder than normal but i attributed that to being left outside all winter.i pushed the gas pedal harder to get to car to move forward. Andimmediately i felt the pedal unstick . At that same moment, the engine raced to full throttle and raced forward with the van continually going faster and faster racing instantly to 50 miles an hour and still accelerating.at the beginning of the sudden acceleration, i tried to apply the brakes but could not stop the van or stop the acceleration.i turned offthe ignition and finally braked the van to a stop.this all happened on the side street of my subdivision before i could get onto the main road.luckily there were no cars or people in my way and i was able to get control of the van without hurtingmyself or others, the van was brought back to my driveway where it remains.i have not contacted the dealership at this point as i do not want to pay to have this 12 year old van repaired at my cost nor do i ever want to drive this van again.

Shield that protects engine is not adequate, causing the belt to get wet when driving over puddles, resulting in loss of steering.

The service engine light illuminated and the vehicle started to run roughly, it was discovered the head gasket which was supposedly done previously was never done.also the head light bulb was replaced

I purchased a 1998 chevrolet venture new for approximately $27,000.after 4 1/2 years i had to replace the lower intake manifold gasket at a cost of about $500.i maintained the vehicle to the manufacturers specifications even changing the oil every 3 to 4000.on labor day 2003, a little more than 5 years after i purchased the vehicle, i broke down returning from a family vacation with the car packed and my three kids.the car had to be towed to the nearest chevrolet dealer.75 miles from home.bottom line the cam bearings spun in the engine and the dealer said the car was worth $300 as is.it needed a new engine at a total cost of $6150.gm customer service agreed that this was premature engine failure but that the engine had 72,000 miles and according to gm the life expectancy of that engine is only 100,000 miles.they said i got almost 75% of the engines expected life and they offered me 25% of the cost incurred by me to install a new engine.gm needs to recognize that the faulty gasket on the lower intake manifold caused this problem by allowing antifreeze to enter the engine.gm should have reimbursed me the cost for the gasket replacement and the engine.normal wear and tear i expect, but to have a vehicle worth about $7,000 one day and $300 the next is not fair.i will never buy another gm product as long as i live and i will let as many people i know how gm stands by their product.*la

Camshaft in engine broke while traveling 50 mph.vehicle immediately ceased to operate, and needed to be pushed toside of the road.mechanic stated that camshaft was defective and should not break under any circumstances.entire engine had to be replaced.

1998chevrolet venture van 3400dex coolant engine, intake manifold gaskit & head gasket left us stranded on the side of the freeway with 3 children in busy july 4th traffic, had to be towed home and call for someone to pick my self and children up while my husband waited for a tow truck. From the research we have done this is a common problem with this engine that chevy will not publicaly admit too even though they have redesigned the intake manifold system for the new vehicles .

We had a manifold gasket on our 1998 chevy venture go bad earlier this year. It leaked anti-freeze into the oil. It appears that the anti-freeze leaking into the engine oil has caused failures in the strength of the crankshaft. And since this site does not combine similar problems, it may appear that there are just a few problems with the cooling system, gaskets and crankshaft on the 1998-2000 venture vans. You need to look at all the cooling system problem reports. Now the crank shaft has broken. We have learned thatof others have had the same problem with this van. The local dealership has told us it will cost over $5,000.00 to repair/replace the engine. I have had many different types of cars in the past, one nissan maxima we have now has almost 200,000 miles, with no engine repairs like this. I believe gm has had a major defect with the manifold gasket and cooling system on this van and has avoided a recall for this defect. We were just told to "have a nice day" by rose uhl and christy hardcastle of "gm customer service". I think a $5,000.00 repair bill is something to make complaints about on a van that cost $23,000.00.

Intake manifold gasket failed causing coolant to leak into oil. Dealer performed pressure test and verified leak, changed oil, and found coolant. Had repaired by independent shop. Unknown at this time if internal damage has been done to engine. Engine had 70,000 miles on it. This is absolutely ridiculous to see this many complaints without a forced, or voluntary recall. I want to be reimbursed for the cost of this repair.

Intake manifold gasket had to be replaced at 62000mi, started to leak anti-freeze in engine, based on dealer and other customers , this is a common problem with gm 3.1l and 3.4l engines. Accountability is needed by gm. Issue should be made a recall. $900.00

January 2002 low coolant light came on.contacted dealer who advised that if no leaks visible to add specific coolant if needed and recontact if further illumination of light occurs.small amount of coolant( type specific as per owners manual) was added.approx. One week ago light again illuminated.small amount of coolant added.on 3/26/2002 coolant system pressurized and found to have leak from engines intake manifold gasket.have been told by numerous sources that the gm 3.4l engine has had numerous failures of intake manifold gaskets. Nlm

Problem with the intake manifold casket. The part fails and the allow coolant to leak into the oil pan.this casuse a loss of coolant and wild tempature funcuations. This is a wide spread problem with this part and should be recalled a a defective part.in fact the part has been replaced in more recent gm models. If some one would do a little research you would find that problem is more wide spread than gm is willing to admit to.

Intake gasket bad, replaced jan. 2002.problem still occuring, engine knocking and a new engine is needed.

Engine continues to shake real bad and stalls out. The service engine soon light comes on the car wont start.*nlm**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis**770115

Intake manifold leaked coolant onto motor at 79000 miles.

Ticking begin at around 45000 to 50000 miles on 1998 venture, soon it needed bearings and rods, the mechanic took off the oil pan and oil was like mud, i have oil changed every 3000 miles, i saw the oil, it was awful, then one day the oil light came on and the service engine light and at around 70000 miles i need new engine, i have always been a general motors person mainly cherolet, but, as of now, i am thinking it will be a cold day in ---- before i buy another, i see why the foreign motor companies are kicking butt...i am not the 1st to have a problem with the ventures.. I have been told that the maifold is leaking into the oil system there by causing this problem with engines blowing...i do not know what to do, i have 4 children 2 of whom are in college and 2 at home, i can't just race out and buy a new one, which chevy offered to maybe give me a little off if i wanted to buy a new one.

I recently purchased a used 1998 chevrolet venture. Upon checking the fluid levels yesterday, i noted that the coolant level was low, and the coolant appeared to be contaminated (probably by oil). This, coupled with abnormal temperature fluctuations and an odd tinge on my oil dipstick caused me enough concern to do a little research. I've found thousands of testimonials from gm owners, especially of the 3.1 and 3.4 liter v-6, who have suffered from a leaking intake manifold gasket. The damage ranges from a six hundred dollar repair bill to ejected rods/cracked heads/complete engine failure. This is obviously a widespread defect, and engine failure in any type of traffic is obviously a safety concern, especially in a family vehicle such as a minivan. I am currently looking for information regarding accidents caused by this defect.my complaint is the commonality lack of support for this problem, given the fact that gm is clearly aware that it exists (both by technical bulletin and the fact that all four of the local gm service departments i called recently referred to the problem immediately). It is unbelievable that a recall has not occurred on this poorly engineered, inherently dangerous "dex-cool" coolant system, when it corrodes engine operating parts and support structures, often undetectable in the lower engine area until catastrophic material failure.*la

1998 chevrolet venture manifold leak.*mrthe coolant level was down quite often.

Intake gasket leak of coolant.onweb research this is a common problem known to gm usually with serious engine repairs being necessary.dealership mechanic acknowledged it was a, "common problem".

Cam shaft broke while warming up in my yard.1998 chevrolet venture van. I found a tsb that stated that this particular van had an intake manifold gasket problem.i have since found that the dealer never replaced the gasket before i purchased it.it has 56000 miles on it when i bought it and now has 88000 16 monthes later. Talked to a mechanic and was told that camshafts don;t just break unless they are faulty.i am currently negotiating with dealership and they have loaned me a vehicle to use until we come to some kind of agreement.

The engine's head gasket failed on 2 separate occasions.he second time this occurred it destroyed the engine.

Dt:the contact owns a 1998 chevrolet venture.two months ago she had to replace the engine due to the cam shaft breaking. She replaced the old engine with a new one.one week later the cam shaftbroke again on the same spot as the other.mechanic said that he had never heard of a hollow camshaft, and that was the way all cam shafts were for this vehicle.

Vehicle stalled while driving on 3 different occasions over past 6 months.vehicle currently using coolant, but not leaking to ground.when vehicle stalls, makes almost impossible to operate and nearly caused me to have an accident.

Most of the time while being in the middle of an intersection the vehicle will lose all power and shut off without warrning. Dealer has been contacted.

I have had all the problems that everyone has complained about, but, the worst to me is that i am sitting here in need of a motor in my 1998 venture van. I thought that i would be able to use to at least 100,000 miles. I started getting the ticking noise like at 50,000 miles and was told that it was the lifters, couldn't believe it, then before it hit 60,000 i had rods bearings and i am not sure what else done and by 70,00 my motor is blown. I am a homemaker with 2 children in college and 2 weddings going on, i can't afford a new car and now i am driving my brothers, it is embarrassing to say the least. I had contacted chevy and they offered me a little voucher to help pay on a new van. I can't afford a new one, i am not a vain person, i just want a car i can trust and thought that i had one in chevy. Now i see why people are buying foreign. I saw in the complaints where this has happened to several ventures what are we to do?

After much research with area gm dealerships and your website, it appers that the 1998 venture mini-van's intake manifold gasket develops a leak at 80000 to 90000 miles.i had this replacement in may 2002.since my van was out of warrenty by 1000 miles (it was shy 2 weeks of being 4 years old).i spoke with gm's customer service and they stated there was nothing they could do about it.even though i have maintained my vehicle on schedule for all tune-up/oil changes/tire rotations, etc.i ended up paying $575.00 to have the intake manifold gasket replaced.since then my van has never been the same.it is now in the shop in need of a whole new engine with only 82000 miles.it seems a piston rod spun and damaged the crank shaft. After much investigation, i was told that the problem with the intake manifold gasket could have caused all of this.now i am faced with replacing the whole engine with an used engine with 4,000 miles for $2400 + tax, getting a remanufactured engine for $3865 or trading in the car.i do believe an investigation in the leaking of the intake manifold gasket should definately be pursued.i would really appreciate any assistance.for the headlight, my headlight lens fall off while i was driven on a highway going about 55 mph.i never could found the lens and lucky the lens flying off did not cause a crash.i contacted the gm assistance program and once again was told there was nothing could be done to assist us.this wasn't a known problem.after investigating again, i see this is a known problem.replacing the lens meant replacing the whole headlight unit at the tune of $328.03.what is the consumer to do??no safety defect listed.

Low coolant light came on - slight engine tapping at startup.dealership service department has determined that the engine is shot.this vehicle has had regular maintenance and has 60,000 miles on it.after doing our own research, it appears thata great number of 1997-2000 venture vans have a problem with tapping and engine failure.i would like to have an investigation started to confirm of deny that the 3400 v6 engine is defective. Chevrolet rep. Quickly agreed to pay for half of the repair, which is somewhat suspicious.

Engine stalling and under performing due to manifold gasket leaking coolant into engine.my wife was entering a main road from our sub-division driving our chevrolet venture '98 when the engine started running roughly and sputtering.this could have been fatal with the oncoming traffic.this problem was due to a leak of coolant i believe into the engine.it seems gm is aware of the problem but has not notified owners of the vans.at the least they should be making consumers aware of the problem and the fact that engine failure could occur during critical times.

Extreme leak in the intake manifold gasket, leading to possible engine damage due to coolant destroying aluminum components of internal engine parts.the following was done to prevent immediate engine failure:replace intake manifold gasket and thoroughly clean inside engine ($771), replace oil pressure switch ($86), full coolant flush ($105), oil/filter change ($15), and replace coolant sensor ($85).consistant with historical failure of all similar makes/models.customer pays for gm's poor product.

Vehicle taken in for routine oil change at 39000 miles. Mechanic informed us that there was a manifold intake leak that would cost $600+ to fix.i did not do the repair, but have since been informed that there is damage to the engine and that not repairing could cause sudden engine failure. Something known and common like this is shameful for a car 3000 miles out of warranty. I suspect the problem was present at the oil change prior to 36k.

I recently purchased a used chevrolet venture minivan. After approximately 6,000 miles driving, the intake manifold gasket failed and i now have coolant in the vehicle oil. This is an expensive repair and after considerable internet investigation, i found literally hundred of other owners with the same complaint. It appear that gm has known about this problem for some time and refuses to correct the problem. So far, i have not had the vehicle repaired because of cost, but i think that gm should be responsible to venture owners to repair this defect cost free to the owner.

While driving on the hutchinson river parkway at about 2:30 pm with my family, my wife heard a noise from the bottom of the car.to our horror, we saw cars behind us swerving to avoid a tire which was skidding along the road.we immediately exited and, upon looking under our 1998 chevrolet venture minivan, saw neither our spare tire, nor the plate that held inplace.it appeared as if the cable that held the tire in place had completely and catastrophically failed, resulting in a potentially deadly situation.fortunately for everyone involved the pavement was (for the moment) dry, it was daytime, the drivers behind were not tailgating (as is customary on the hutch) and the tire came to rest on the median, out of the lanes of traffic.we looped back and found the wheel on the median and, while we were trying to decide whom to call to report the incident (aaa, local police, etc) a westchester county police officer stopped to help us.he briefly stopped traffic and removed the wheel so that no one would hit it.as far as we could tell, no one was injured and there was no major property damage as a result of the incident (we have yet to determine how much it will cost to repair the wheel and the spare tire housing).upon searching this site, we have noticed that a very similar problem has already been reported (a spare tire cable that has become very corroded) and believe our experience not to be an isolated event, especially in areas where salt is commonly used in the winter to keep the roads clear of ice.we recommend that general motors devise and implement a solution to this problem before lives are lost (and liabilities are incurred) as a result of this faulty design. *nlm

While changing the tire on the vehicle the jack buckled in half.

Consumer went to change tire by using factory jack that came equipped with vehicle when it bent, causing vehicle to fall, barely missing consumer's leg and damaging bumper.

The spare tire mechanism at the rear of the van includes a cable that with a bolt secures the spare tire to the underside of the van.the cable broke and the tire fell to the ground.this occurred as the car was being backed from the garage onto the street.at no time has the spare tire been removed from the van prior to this incident.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet venture.the contact shifted the gear into park and shut off the vehicle.the vehicle rolled away while she was assisting a child with exiting the vehicle.the contact ran to jump into the vehicle and noticed that the gear shifter was very unstable and had a lot of "play" or wiggle.she depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle came to a stop.prior to this failure, the tail lights failed in february of 2007.at that time, she was informed that she needed new circuit boards.within a year, the failures recurred.the circuit boards burned out and the dealer stated that the plug for the boards was burned out as well, which would cause the failures to continue.the failure mileage was 130,000 and current mileage was 168,000.

I own a 1998 chevy venture minivan and on the date specified i was out with my family ( a snowy evening) when i went to apply the brakes and my turn signals on my dash went to a solid green.as i approached the red light a person in the car next to me advised me that i had no taillights.after getting home i did some research on the internet and found that this is a widespread problem where if moisture gets into the connector on the brake light assembly, it will cause the ground connector to short out and cause the brake lights to do some crazy things as well as the cruise control to disengage at certain times.

Drivers side brake light. It keeps burning out the bulbs. It melts the plastic around the metal line, the part that it plugs into. I have talked to other people that has the same problem.

The headlight lens has moisture inside it. I feel this effects the lighting at night as it certainly must obstrict the light beam. The headlights on this vehicle are the worst i've ever had on a vehicle even without this defect. The car was purchased from wheels inc. Leasing. I simply went to seif chev. To initiate the complaint and see if there was a fix. They referred me to a chevrolet cust. Complaint nbr. 800 222-1020. Icalled this number and talked to a customer rep who took my complaint to investigate. He gave me a file nbr. 990559403. This call was made on 10/29/99. I did not hear anything further and on 11/18/99 i again called chev. Cust. Svc. And referred to the file number. The person put me on hold and called seif chev. He then came back to me and said there was nothing that could be done. It was a common occurrance to have moisture inside these headlight lens and it was felt by chev. That this was not a problem. I, as previously stated do feel it is a problem and it is caused either by bad design or poor manufacture. I think it should be looked into . Not only the chev venture but also the olds silouette and pontiac mini vans.

The passenger's side headlight lens cover fell off.based on website searchs, this apparently has been a recurring problem with the headlights on the venture, pontiac transport, and oldsmobile sihouhette due to a breakdown of the adhesive material the retains the lens cover to the housing.this can cause the headlight to burn out if exposed to rain.gm issued a bulletin (#00-08-42-003) to help reduce the cost of repair but it is still significant (approx. $150). Due to the potential safety issue, i feel that this should be looked in to for a possible recall.thank you.

Front headlamp assembly lenses for both front l/r fell off vehicle, attempted to have dealer repair.this is a defect, lens should not fall off at 52,000 miles, and to repair have to find lens, unavailable, dealer does not have individual lens, need to replace whole assembly on problem side.

I spoke to customer service at chevrolet and they said my car was not in for a recall for moisture being in the lights or the headlight front coming off.i noticed in odi id 714982 someone had submitted a complaint on moisture in the lights. At this point my right head light front cover has come off. With close investigation it looks as if the adhesive had dried up and gone bad. About two months ago i noticed the left headlight had moisture in it. The moisture in the right headlight appeared about6 months or so ago. I was told by the mechanic that it looks like the adhesive is going bad in the left headlight. I believe this is a manufacturer defect.

The lens on both headlights have now failed. Evidently moisture leaks into the assembly and the heat of the light causes rapid expansion , blowing the lens off. The lens is only held in place with adhesive. Off course this only happens at night when you need lights.

Consumer' s gas tank is on straps.whenstopping there is a 2 second delay, then there is a rumbling noise where as the gas gushes to the back of tank, causing the tank to move against the chassis.the dealer installed rubber bushings between tank and chassis to minimize sounds. Vehicle will do this every time unless the tank is full or low. I noticed that my headlight cover was missing and couldn't figure out what had happened. I started looking at the other headlight cover and it fell off in my hand. I noticed that they had been glued on and the glue had dried up and was cracked no longer holding on the cover. I came in and called chevrolet but they wouldn't do anything since it was out of warranty (just barely). They don't make just the cover - you have to buy a whole headlight assembly (ripoff -$90). I went online to a venture owners message board. I found message after message about this same problem with other 98 ventures. Obviously chevrolet/gm is ignoring it. It was pointed out to me how dangerous this can be if the cover is gone and moisture gets to the halogen light it could explode injuring anyone close. Not only that but someone could be injured if the headlight cover flies off while driving. Please investigate this. Chevrolet is being negligent. And people are going to be hurt.

My headlight lenses have fallen off on three separate occasions.this is clearly a faulty design as the lenses are merely glued on the front of the headlight assembly.because of the glue wearing away on the headlight cover, water gets into the assembly and causes the halogen lights to short out.this to me is a very serious problem.i think that the manufacturer should admit to this and recall the vans and replace with a new design.why does it always take someone's death and a lawsuit to get something taken care of.i have had to replace the lights three times.the last time i put duct tape around the outside of the lenses to keep them on.why should i have to do that???

The "service engine soon" light came up one morning. A certified friend mechanic checked it out at home with his engine analyzer/computer & found nothing wrong. He then checked out the gas cap if secure. After awhile, the light went off. I still can't believe it was the gas cap because i'm very careful about loose gas caps. Anyway, after 2 days of driving, the light came out again. Beforehand, he suggested to have the gas cap replaced if this happens again. So i changed it & have been driving around for almost 3 weeks now but the light is still there. Somebody said that it might takea couple of gas tank refills before the gas cap get "cross-threaded" or sealed tight. I already had 2 refills & the light's still there. The van's running well & am experiencing no problems whatsoever. I just want to have that light turned off.

If you have this problem, see the section on this web site that shows technical service bulletins, print my complaint also, and take these to your dealer to get your "thud" fixed.

With fuel tank full and down to 1/2 tank, we hear a thumping noise. This happens when we stop, or accelerate. We also hear it when we pull in or out of the garage (sloped). Once the tank is below 1/2 the noise goes away. We have had the dealer replace the insulation between the tank and frame and new stapping was installed at the same time. The problem still exists. If we trade this in like we're planning on doing, this problem will sure put a crimp on the sale price. Any information on a fix or some corrective action would be appreciated. Thank you

The noise coming from the fuel tank appears when the tank is full and is heard down to about 1/2 tank. When you start out or come to a stop a "thump" sound is heard. It sounds like a basketball is rolling around in the tank. The dealer has r/r the tank and replaced the strapping and the sound is still there. If and when i sell this vehicle the sound won't be a selling point. Plus, there's a possibility that it could be a safety issue too. I've filled out a nhts questionnaire in october and haven't heard from either the manufacture or the dealership. When i first contacted the dealership, they checked the tech. Support side of the house and were told that there was a known problem, no fix, but not to worry... Well, we're worring now. Please contact us by e-mail as to the status of this problem. Thank youjohn thime.

We are experiencing a thumping/loose basketball rolling in the back of vehicle sound. It happens when the tank is full, and gets louder down to 1/2 full then dissapates. Additional padding and straping were installed by the dealer, but the sound is still there only louder. For resale this isn't going to fly. Is there anything that can be done? thank you.

Vehicle has been serviced at least nine times for this problem, chevrolet acknowledges the problem, and says they do not have a solution. In addition, the front driver's seat has been replaced. Also, the window fell out from the sliding door because the latch was installed up side down/the headlight assembly was replaced due to loud whistling whenever driving more than 50mph. This is an annoyance problem with the transmition. On highway inclines at 40 to 60 mph in 3rd gear there is a constant bucking of the van. This was reported to, and noted by the dealer but he would never do anything about it. Another dealer says it is the tourque converter but is now out of warranty. I purchased this van after lease ran out 11/99. I would still like this defect fixed.

I own a 1998 chevy venture van.i recently took it in for a recall for a defect on the steering rack and pinion (nhtsa campaign id number : 02v286000).the dealer would not replace the defective component because the van has a salvage title.i was notified that "the bearing is about to fall out"and the entire rack and pinion was damaged due to the defect and has to be replaced at a cost of $600.i called gm and was informed that it was their policy not to do recalls on vehicles with a salvaged title.this is a defect and a safety issue regardless of the salvaged title and i think gm should be responsible for fixing it.there is also another safety recall on the transmission (nhtsa campaign id number : 98v131000) that is a problem on my particular van.about a year ago, a 5 year old friend of the family was playing in the van (without our knowledge).he was able to move the shift lever enough to disengage the transmission lock even though it was still in park, and the van rolled down the hill in our back yard.it was stopped by a small tree.nobody was hurt even though there were two other children in the back yard playing and the van suffered only minor damage.i thought perhaps this was because the van had previously been in an accident so i didn't pursue looking into the problem.then i discovered the recall on it and now i feel that gm should fix this problem.what can i do to get them to fix my van?.

Transmission cable failed causing vehicle to roll barkward while in park.

The van was in the shop at landmark when we first got it for its brakes, lights and battery, it also was at land mark when the battery went out and was not told than that the sensor did not get told the sensor was bad till after a few weeks the light for service came on and it was taken to tuneup master for a tune up and was told that the light for the sensor had been reset for the sensor should have been replaced gm has a recall on this make of van but because my va does not fall into the time they where made they would not help with the trans. Repair, nor will they help with the brakes.

My wife and i noticed a delayed response when accelerator was pushed while already at speed.my wife also said that the engine sounded different than in the past.we took vehicle to dealership and they inspected the transmission.there are metal shavings throughout the transmission - it needs to be replaced.we do not understand how a vehicle that has received regular maintainance can have a transmission go bad at only 50k miles.

Vehicle was involved in recall # 98v131, transmission.dealer inspected the vehicle, and informedowner that repair was not needed.owner stated that transmission has jumped out of gearseveral times, and felt thatvehicle needed to be repaired.

Control arm broke while driving the vehicle at 5 mph while turning into home driveway.rear axle separated from frame and right rear wheel ended up under rear quarter panel. This would have been a fatal incident if the problem occurred while traveling at highway speeds.dealer and chevrolet both have stated that since the vehicle is out of warranty they will not offer any type of repair assistance.

Wheel bearing rattles, and there is a grinding noise.brake pads has been changed twice.

Seatbelt broke; consumer has contacted general motors, and they haven't responded.clip willnot not hold whenclipped it inside ofretractor, so thatit can click and hold.

Seat belts fail to latch on rear removable passenger seats (7 pass. Option) 3 seats usable out of 5. 2nd row rh outer belt will not release from retractor - it's stuck. Inquired with chevrolet dealer, sadler motors - s.s.m. Mi gm said no recalls issued, or will be issued. The first bench seat, seat belt will not hold when the consumer click the top buckle inside of the retractor.the dealership is aware of the problem. Ts

While traveling east approximately 35-40mph,another vehicle traveling west, entered eastbound lane. Both vehicles collided head-onon driver's side. Upon impact, neither air bag deployed.driver's seat belt was intact, but driver suffered minor injuries. Children, in rear, sustained some bruises from seat belts, but no treatment. Vehicle was totaled.

Second row seat belts replaced several time due to lock up, continue to experience lock up after repairs.

Seatbelt is not working properly.

The safety belt latch has a limited range of motion and doesn't allow for a proper fit for toddler car seats.they have the over the shoulder strap and when you try to securely buckle the seat in place the latch doesn't rotate up far enough to secure the belt.i've tried a couple different seats that would suit our needs perfectly and they can't be used until our child is over 40lbs.the seat we purched is the graco cherished car go, model #8480hg.it sits well in the seat, but can't be latched properly.is there anything on the market that i could purchase that would allow us to properly secure the toddler/booster seat?

While driving 40 mph, consumer was involved in a frontal collision, and drivers shoulder restraint did not restrain driver, resulting in major head injuries.

Left 2nd seat belt defective. While problematic for months, precise causejust identified.any slight pressure to (red) release buckle, though causing no visible change, causes buckle to release unexpectedly at a later time.was used to secure child car seat.continually found buckle unlatched after trips.originally suspected child was releasing buckle but recent investigation revealed true cause (other belts fine).chevrolet dealer denies this as a safety repair, out of warranty.

Tseat belts will either not buckle or will buckle and not release. Center mechanism is popping, causing failure. Belts have been replaced at four different services.

Rear driver's side seat belt buckle does not remain inlatch plate.please give any further details.

When it rains it goes intovehicle where dome light and electronic computer were mounted on the ceiling which may causean electrical short.also,on middle rear seat both seatbeltsjammed and would not lock in place, which wont protectchild in event of a crash.dealer replaced passenger's side seatbelt, and fixeddriver's rear seatbelt.finally, rear middle window pin kept falling, which allowed the windows to stay open.dealer fixed the problem 3 times, but on the fourth time, they replace the whole unit.please provide further information.

Bad antilock brake pulsation at all times when applied. I thought was normal but dealer said rotors may be warped.

1998 chevy venture. Rear brake line failure. Brake line was rusted through-midway from front to back on both rear brake line's. These lines are made of metal and have several 90 degree bends along the frame of the vehicle. There were no events leading up to equipment failure. I was backing the vehicle out of the driveway when the brake pedal went to the floor and lost all resistance. Should this have occurred while traveling at legal speed limit and proper following distance the results could be catastrophic for the vehicle occupants and other motorist involved. Stainless steel materiel should be used for equipment as important as this.

Sudden and complete brake failure.it was discovered that the rear brake lines had rusted to the point of failure.no warning...just complete failure.

Since purchasing this van i have had numerous problems, with the most recent being an engine replacement.this problem stems from the bad design of gm's intake gasket which breaks down and causes anti-freeze to leak into the engine causing premature wear and/or replacement.

*sc

Had to replace the rack and pinion on my 1998 chevrolet venture, it has 64,000 miles on it.

Certain passenger vehicles and mini vans have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly, could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape. Consumer noticed this problem. Vehicle vin does not comply. Dealerhas been contacted.

Steering makes noticeable thumping when you turn the steering wheel at times, especially when backing up and turning the steering wheel.my mechanic told me that's the problem..the steering is failing at this time....

I own a 1998 chevrolet venture ls van.the headlight assemblies' seals don't keep them from filling from water causing the lights (headlights and turn signals) to short out.further, due to the knowingly defective assemblies, the headlight crystals pop off (due to the poor seal).this occurred to me while i was driving and i subsequently ran over the crystal spraying debris behind me.in contacting chevrolet customer service center's toll free number, they said that there is no recall for this defective safety equipment and they don't see a problem with these scenarios.in doing further research, i've discovered that these defective assemblies were very common, chevrolet has in fact issued a tsb highlighting this commonly known defect, and in talking with a chevrolet dealership service writer he related that he has seen far more of these problems than he would like to ever see.does the ntsb consider fully functional headlights and turn signals to be necessary safety equipment?how about headlight crystals flying off vehicles while in operation? *nlm

While drivingat high speeds antifreeze was mixed in with the oil. This caused the vehicle to vibrate.the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. This caused the transmission to break.the sliding door on the driver's side rubber trim had fallen off, water would get into the trunk when it rained, and the rear windshield did not work properly. *sc

Consumer has taken vehicle to dealership approximately 5 times for poor operationof automatic doors.when children are entering or exiting the door will sometimes start closing. When pressing the button the door, sometimes door doesn't open all the way. Dealership has taken door apart and pulled the computer system and refused to repair it due to non-recall. Technician said there was no informationto help repair vehicle because it was not included in the recall. Nor could they duplicate the problem.

While driving about 70 mph the electric passenger's sliding door opened without a reason while consumer 's son was sittingnear the door.

Design of van has no inside door lock, van only unlocks with a remote, no inside door lock maybe hazardous when exiting in a emergency.

The power sliding door does not always close completely.in some cases, it catches the initial locking point, but it won't pull the door in and completely lock and seal the door.most times if i use the power door switch three or four times and it still won't close, so i have to disable the power feature and close it manually.there, also, have been two incidences where the door didn't close all the way and was still ajar, but the open door indicator on the dashboard indicated it was closed.

Right hand power passenger door failed.

Rear passenger's side sliding door came off track, causingchild's hand to be crushed. Dealer has been contatced. Please provide further details.

After going through puddles everything would shut down or not work properly. Power steering is difficult/fan belt slips after getting wet/ alternator would quit working. Also, no protection cover to prevent water splashing. Taking to dealer to check out. Abs light keeps going off. *mjs

Dealer installed new shocks/springs, but still hits bottom.

I am surprised no tsb exists for this problem that i can find.my 1998 chevrolet venture van had a problem with the headlight - the lens on the headlight housing fell off! discussing the issue with a number of automotive professionals, i learned this is apparently a common occurrence.now if the lens falls off, the headlight bulb is exposed and can easily be damaged and not function - is this not a safety concern?should not this issue be addressed as a possible threat to safety in the operation of a motor vehicle? thank you.

Vehicle owner feels this part was flawed as it should not have broken. No safety defect mentioned in summary.

Engine check light comes on and off.

While driving on the highway, the clip which held the spare tire underneath the van broke and the spare tire fell off onto the road.*sc

Check engine light stays on. Dealer says faulty contact. Will not fix.

Since purchasing this van i have had numerous problems, with the most recent being an engine replacement.this problem stems from the bad design of gm's intake gasket which breaks down and causes anti-freeze to leak into the engine causing premature wear and/or replacement.

When sitting still and turning the steering wheel, there is a low frequency loud groaning noise.it sounds like it is coming from the steering mechanisms outside of the passenger compartment.

Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration, vehicle rolled over a curb, knocking down two trees, resulting in property damage.

Vehicle started to accelerate when parked in driveway, ignition turned on, backed out, and hit another vehicle. Dealer / manufacturer contacted and cannot remedy the problem.problem still exists. .et.

Engine randomly goes to full throttle when braking. This occurs only after the van has been driven long enough for the engine to get to run temp. The van is then parked (engineoff) for about 30 to 45 min. Then engine is restarted . When the brakes are next applied the engine goes to full throttle. This is a random event and will not always occur when the previous conditions are present. (like the tragedy in minneapolis dec 4 1998)

Van has random intermiitent runaway engine. Engine will go to full throttle, near resulted in crashes.

While coasting along, driver depressed gas pedal to gain speed and vehicle surged forward. Dealer was notified.

While driving at an undetermined speed, the vehicle stalled which caused the driver to pull off the road. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealership. Mechanic informed the owner that the accelerator cable snapped.

The throttle cable broke while the consumer was traveling at 30 mph.

Rear window on vehicle blew out. *mr in 2001 the rear window had to be replaced because it had blown out.in 2003, the same window had blown out again which was the original from gm.there was no seal around the original window.the lower intake manifold seal had to be replaced by gm in which they covered half the cost.there were other chevrolet's with the same problem.(the cracked sealed leaked coolant into the engine)the consumer felt that gm should reimburse the insurance company. *scc

The drivers side window regulator on my van as broken several times. It starts by just coming of track and you have to push the window to get it to close and seal and eventually the regulator brakes all together and the window slams down or you hear a loud metal pop and the window goes forward and the corner that is in the upper left is now in the center of where the window should be. It came real close to shattering the window. We replaced the regulator and it is doing it again.
