While traveling consumer smelled a burnt odor coming from inside of the vehicle.consumer pulled over, and driver's side door caught on fire. Consumer called the fire department to extinguish the fire.no injuries reported.vehicle was towed, and totaled by the insurance company.

Consumer statedfuel leaked into the main electrical system.

For the past couple of weeks my tahoe will crank start but only run for about 1 second then shuts off. After doing some internet research i have found that thousands other gm owners are having the same issue. This problem is very annoying and inconveniencing. Im sure its cost many people there jobs or at minimum gotten them in trouble for being either late or unable to come in to work. I am in the military and the my car wont start doesn't come off very well with my superiors. Something needs to be done about this.

Driver side window switch caught fire shortly after use (several hours).a light rain storm came while the windows were down.some rain entered the inside of the vehicle, some water likely got into the switch assembly. This all happened while vehicle was parked on the curb and ignition was off. I toweled off the interior and switch assembly off, it didn't appear much water entered the switch. The vehicle was parked and "off" this whole time. I turned ignition on to roll windows back up, and promptly turned the ignition back off. Some hours later, the switch assembly caught fire and the vehicle was a total loss.this fire wasn't discovered until the next day as it self-extinguished.the battery was not discharged after the fire, so it was not a dead short in the wiring.i believe the auto-down circuit board or the electric mirror switch was the cause.after the fire, the pass side mirror was fully extended away, at some point the contacts were closed causing the mirror to move, despite the ignition being "off".this happened either during the fire, or the switch was the cause of the fire.the ignition was only "on" for about 30 seconds that whole day prior to the fire, just long enough to roll up the windows.

Consumer took vehicle to dealer for inproperly working back windows, they would not always go up and down, dealer stated the problem was an electrical problem and when consumer picked up vehicle, he said it was fixed, days later the consumer hit the button to put up a back window and smoke started coming from the dashboard, all consumer's exited vehicle and the fire started, vehicle was a total loss.

Consumer statedfuel leaked into the main electrical system.

Rear tail lights/blinkers burns out constantly - have had to replace housing three times - causes delays and almost a wreck.*la

1998 chevy tahoe wiring harness from brake pedal.brake wiring harness moves with brake pedal motion (i.e. When brakes are activated). Over time, this motion causes wires to break resulting in brake light failure.

The consumer was unable to start the vehicle due to acid leaking onto the battery.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

My battery failed where the positave post connects to it,battery acid spilled all over wire harness.my friend has a 1997 tahoe that did the exact same thing! when i contacted costomer service, i was told that they did not know anything about this problem nor did they have any complaints.the lady finally noticed where you(nhtsa) was investigating this situation.amazing!!!please feel free to contact me for add. Follow-ups. Thank-you. Doug catron

The original factory battery leaked acid.the dealer cleaned off frame and the "steel" brake line to the right front wheel and then painted it.the replacement factory battery then leaked acid again in 09/00.this time acid leaked into battery cable "wrapping" causing corrosion of the entire cable. It also leaked onto the coupling on the "steel" brake line that goes to the right front tire.now dealer has to replace the battery box and cable, fender well and the coupler on the steel brake line.ts

Engine checklight came on/ fuel spilled out of fuel injector. Took vehicle to dealer, who foundfuel had spilled onto distributor cap and wires, shorting out distributor and causing corrosion. Also, in september 2000, brake pedal got hard progressivly. Took vehicle to dealer who found brake master cylinder was defective.

I have a 1998 tahoe (purchase new from edmark chevrolet in nampa, idaho) with a 350 vortec with 42,000 miles.i have just been told that i am leaking engine coolant from the intake manifold near the rear firewall.a very reputable mechanic says this is very common for this engine and will cost around $400-$500 to fix.while i have owned the car for 6 years i am am upset that a $34,000 car with only 42,00 miles has a problem which is deemed to be "common".if it is common, and i suspect it is, why doesn't gm post a bulletin and offer to repair the problem.it certainly wasn't caused from abuse or neglect.this same car last year with around 36,000 miles on it had to have its alternator replaced at a cost of $350 and a leaking gas tank which cost me $450.these repairs seem rediculous to me considering the price of the vehicle, the low mileage, and the general overall care.it has never been in an accident.frankly, i enjoy the vehicle tremendously and it fits my lifestyle perfectly.however, having said that i cannot afford to keep pouring major dollars into this vehicle.i have always been a chevy guy and would like to remain one.i have been loyal and would appreciate chevy being loyal to me by repairing my coolant leak and reimbursing me for the other previously mentioned expenses.

Coolant used in my 1998 tahoe causes early corrosion of parts in the cooling system.even following the recommended flushing, i am finding myself facing a rather large service bill to fix a leak caused by the type of coolant used.the dealer i purchased the car from (new) admitted that they do have this problem with early corrosion, yet chevrolet is not covering any of the repair cost.

While traveling and without any indication vehicle locked up steering/ brakes. Dealer stated that pcmwas the problem. The water pump was leaking.

Water pump starte to leak after 2 years with a replacement from the dealership.gasket originally was corroded from the dexol coolant.this time the metal housing for the water pump developed a hole just below the shaft, large enough for a pencil to be inserted.

The brake failures are well known by all tahoe owners.the failures for the windshieldwiper control assembly, brake light assembly are all related to poor quality electrical components not intended for any reasonable service life.junk by any quality standards.the service department at nelda stevenson chevrolet acknolwdged these components have high failure rates, but they get paid to correct them.the coolantconnector is an extememly poor design.despite threading into the intake, it is made of a poor quality material that breaks off at the entry to the manifold requiring removal of the manifold to remove the broken threads resulting in a $400 bill to replace a $12.95 part.again pathetic design and choice of materials to save a couple of dollars in manufacturing.as a design engineer, i find these choices by gm designers deplorable and will buy used bmws from now on.a bmw with 200,000 miles has more service life left in it than a brand new gm product.

Heater hose adaptor that ran directly into intake mainfold was made of aluminumcorroded and antifreeze leaked onto the engine motor. This resulted invehicle overheating.

Engine quit during heavy rain,at 40 mph, brakes locked up, resulting in loss of steering and control.vehicle ran off road and hit a tree. Air bags did not deploy. No injuries, but major damage to vehicle.

I own a 1998 chevy tahoe 2 dr 4wd.it had 114,000 miles on it when the head gasket blew and the motor was ruined requiring a complete replacement.the vehicle had not been abused.maintenance was regular.i've now found that this is a common design defect leading to failure.i now buy mazda or toyota vehicles.

Consumer heard a loud knocking while driving.dealer determined that main engine bearing failed. Metal particles were found in engine oil.

Engine connecting rods fit poorly .yh

Intermittentlyvehicle just shut down while driving on the freeway. This has happened 5 tmes since may of 99,resulting in a rear end crash on 3/23/00.dealer was not able to find what was causingvehicle to shut down.please provide any further information.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, they went straight to the floorboard, also, motor went out without prior warning. Dealer had to replace the motor.

While driving at a speed of 65 miles per hour, the motor would just shut down with no warning. After pulling over it would then restart. This happened 8 to 10 times durring the same trip, and then it started running fine as if there was no problem.dealer could not find anything wrong with vehicle. After this problem started at the same time the fuel tank at the top were the fuel pump and lines enter started leaking fuel at fill ups

Premature connecting rod and piston pin wear in chevy 5.7 vortec engine. Wear occurred even before owners manual called for spark plug change.

Serpentine belt tensioner completely blew apart causing loss of belt. Loss of power steering and electrical charging. Belt wrapped around fan causing overheating of engine. Complete replacement of tensioner/pulley and belt necessary.

Serpentinebelt tensioner pulley assembly failed, broke off whilevehicle was coming to a stop, causing loss of brakes and power steering, which almost resulted in a crash.

Engine leaked coolant from the intake manifold gasket. As a result, engine blew out, causing the vehicle to malfunction. Consumer was driving when coolant began leaking.gm has a new part number because the previous gasket has been changed to correct deffect.mechanic replaced intake manifold gasket set and serpentine belt.*la

Aprox. 4 months after buying this veh. The cd player started malfunctioning. It would not play a cd and would give the err sign and the owners manual addressed this situation and said to let the player cool for a while it must be over heated. This seemed strange since most of the time this occured was when the cdplayer had not been in use. After contacting the dealer chuck hutton who has serviced this veh. Since i bought it would say they could not fix the problem unless it was having that problem when i brought the truck into their dealership. Whenever this problem would occure the dash area around the a/ccontrols and radio/cassette and cd player would get so hot you could not keep your hand on the dash . This problem continued to occur and it never was duplicated at the dealership. A service record dated 12/14/1998 shows that the a/c drain was found to be pinched and had to be repositioned to permit it to drain but since that time the truck air system has developed some type of fungus in it and the smell is terrible. On this same service report there is a note concerning checking the cd player for error messages but nothing was found. Currently i am driving a $35000 veh. With a burned up cd player and cassette player that the dealer says is out of warrenty. I reported the problems with these units far before the warranty expried and would like some help trying to see if gm has had much problem with their delco am/fm cassette radio w/auo tone control, speed control volume

The spare tire assembly under my tahoe broke (a rather thick cable) and let the tire and wheel fall off my truck while backing into the garage. Of all places, thank god. I contacted the dealer and the manufacturer because ofsafety concerns i have. Also the spare tire fall off this auto a couple years earlier with the same part being replaced by the same dealer.i hope you folks are tracking the number of times the spares are falling off chevy trucks because i've never had this happen with any other rig and i'm 45 years old. I have the paper work on both repairs.i believe that bothchevy and the dealer could care less about my concerns and the prospects of someone being hurt because of this safety defect... Plus the price of the repair more than doubled in the mean time.

During inclement weatherwindshield wipers stopped operating.also, rear tail lights didn't light up. Bulbs were not defective.

I recently purchased this vehicle from a used car dealer and i stopped on the way home to fill up the tank with gas and got a car wash.after ariving at my home i noticed a strong fuel odor.i checked under the vehicle and there was a significant amount of gas running off of the fuel tank and down the rear of the vehicle.the dealership picked up the vehicle and fixed it for me.they tell me that it was the fuel pump.i believe the leak was coming from the top of the tank, but i'm not convinced that it was the fuel pump.there was enough fuel that it was dangerous to drive in my opinion.

My vehicle recently stalled several times. After the third time, i fortunately had it towed to my mechanic. He discovered the fuel pump wiring was heating up to the point it caused a bare line. His opinion was,i was very fortunate the vehicle stalled since the pump is located in the fuel tank and is a bomb waiting to explode. I noted multiple complaints have been filed. Are we awaiting another ford escort situation before chevy needs to file a recall before some one dies? i have retained the pump should you wish to have an expert look at the situation.

This vehicle has its fourth fuel pump installed and the fifth fuel pump is still in its box in the back , ready. The second fuel pump left my family in maryville, tenn. For three days because the chevrolet dealership couldnt get a pump any sooner. I was told laterby a gm serviceman that this was probably an engineering defect.

Towed to priviate recommended mechanic.he was horrified to find the wire in the fuel pump had it's casing melted off due to the heat within the fuel pump.the fuel pump was half filled with fuel and the intense heat (such that the wire casing had melted) could have created a dangerous or fatal situation.i have tried to ask the company about recall or investigation of this problem but since my car was worked on by someone other than a dealer and/or my miles are over 60k, they will not talk to me.the atty general gave me your information to proceed.i would like to know that this problem is looked into and if recalled, would seek reimbursement..thank you.brenda carey.

Fuel pump failed.

Feul pump extreme whining sound.

Fuel pump had a short.bare wires exposed inside gas tank.possible fire/explosion hazard.

Fuel injection failed. Mjs

Dealer claims a plastic fuel injector connector cracked and is leaking fuel on top of engine, causing fire hazard.

Also, in september 2000, brake pedal got hard progressivly. Took vehicle to dealer who found brake master cylinder was defective.

Consumer states the gas tank bumps against the body of vehicle, this causes the gas to leak.

First owner detected a strong fuel smell. About two weeks later, owner noticed a puddle of fuel on the garage floor. Truck was taken todealer where a crack was found in the fuel tank where the fuel pump wasinserted into tank. Fuel tank was replaced at owner's expense.

Fuel tank cracks, resulting in leakage/fumes

Vehicle has a poor gas tank assembly. Whenever this vehicle is on a steep incline, the tilt of the vehicle causes the gas to leak out of the tank where the cap goes. Dealer has been contacted.

My vehicle failed to start upon leaving the mall. After several trouble shooting procedures at my resident the next day, i found that the in tank fuel sending unit was not working. During the gently lowering of the fuel tank, the sending unit to filter fuel line that runs along the inside of the vehicle frame just crumbled into chunks of rust. After further inspection, i can not believe that gm actually installed fuel lines made out of plain unprotected steel tubing, especially on a vehicle that was sold and operated in a snow belt state. Also while i was replacing the fuel supply and return lines, i noticed that the brake line that feeds the rear brakes that also runs along the inside of the frame was in the same sad shape, during removal of this brake line, it also crumbled into chunks of rust, how these lines did not fail prior to this incident is beyond me. If it wasn't for being a skilled mechanic by trade, this would have cost a fortune in labor cost to repair. For a vehicle sold/operated in snow belt states, these lines should have been made out of stainless steel or some other non-ferrous alloy material.

Power door locks would lock & unlock after getting wet. Have taken to dealer for repairs, butproblem with the locks has reappeared.also, rear hatch would open unexpectedly while driving. Have taken vehicle back to dealer for repairs.the keyless entry also failed.the hood release handle malfunctions.

Parking brake handle / cable broke off.

Parking brake handle / cable broke off.

Slip in the drivetrain when accelerating from a stopped position.i have taken my 1998 chevrolet tahoe to a certified dealer and currently there is not a solution to the problem.this is a severe concern to me as i could lose control of my vehicle on the road.*ph

These problems have been with this vehicle since purchase. It has been returned to the dealer for corrective action . The reply has always been "rearend wind-up" is the problem and it is not covered under warranty. We purchased a three year /36,000 mile warranty to cover these types of defects, only to have the dealer tell us that the warranty will not cover this "rearend wind-up"as it is a regular maintanence item. I have searched the owners manual for this item and have not found it as a maintanence item, according to gm. At all service intervals the only mention of the rearend is to check the fluid level. This has been carried out by the dealer for the first 45,000 miles. I have since lost faith in gm and my dealer and have purchased my last american made vehicle.no safety defec tlisted.

Steering problem- i suddenly lost steering while driving. According to the dearorship this was caused by a malfunction of the power steering sensor.i almost lost control of the car while driving at 55 mph, and luckily there were no vehicles around and i was able to pull off the road. I asked the dealer if there was a recall on this, and they said there was not. The vehicle was not under warranty either. Brakes- while my husband was driving, he lost brakes on the car. According to the dealer service dept, the real axel seals were leaking, and the front calipers were stuck. Seals and gaskets were replaced along with the master cylinder.this item was covered under warranty. We've had on-going problems with the vehicle braking very roughly and "skipping". The rotors have been replaced twice due to them warping due to overheating. The brakes are still giving us problems. The transmission suddenly went up while driving at 35 mph. There were absolutly no signs of this happening before this time. The fluid was clean when i pulled the car over, and there was no slipping either. I was driving along and a very loud noise was coming from the car- it sounded like the rear-end, and the car became suddenly undriveable. Luckily i was on a deserted road and was able to pull over.i feel that if i was in heavy traffic driving at 55-65 mph in any of the above instances a serious accident could have occurred.

Automatic transmission failed.ecm code 1870 slippage.valve body fails either by contamination or defect causing high line pressure causing hard 1-2gear shifts.hard shifts cause internal damage and eminant failure.i've read hundreds of other similar failures that sound identical.this cannot be by accident.all transmissions are gm 4l60e.

I purchased my vehicle with 42,093 miles with the dealers additional coverage of 3,000 miles bringing the total coverage to 45.093 miles on 06/25/2001 at 47,297 miles my vehicle started hesitating on the start after being stopped it was taken to the repair dealer meissner chevrolet at 70th essington ave phila pa where it was found to have code 1870 internal transmission failure it has to be replaced i'm very dissapointed about this i always wanted a chevy trunk and now i sincerely regret it.

While traveling, the vehicle would not shift into reverse.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they replaced the transmission.this happened twice within the last two years. *scc

Premature transmission failure @ 78,797 miles on 1998 chevrolet, tahoe.

I have never had a transmission go on a car and have driven other gm cars well over 100,000 miles.this car has gone in for dealer service every 3,000 miles.while checking on the internet about this, i find that some owners of '98 tahoes have replaced their transmission twice by 50,000 miles.i really think something should be done about a company that puts a transmission in a vehile that they know is faulty.if you can not help me, can you direct me to a class action suit or something else i can do?

Transfer case makes grinding noise while in 2wd, & sounds like its falling apart in 4wd

7/15/98one month oldthe car locked into 4wd when it was started in the driveway.it would not shift out it was inoperative.it needed parts replaced to fix.the car was taken in again because it felt like it was locked in 4wd again because all the axiles were turning.i was told that was normal and that the universals were worn out.that made three universalsin three years.also that the lights on dashbaord for the 4wd uniwould not stay on to tell if you were in 4wd or not.now something in thetransfer case is broken.i recently read the owners manual on the 4wd unit and it says the front axsiles are not supposed to turn in 2wd.i brought this up to the dealer saying that even though this car has 93000.00 miles the transfer case would not have more than 1000.00 miles on it and that this car has a drive train history of failure with three universals and three problems with the transfer case.they tell me that all the axiles turn and wear out which is not what their owners manual says.

Pin inrear axle snapped. Heard a clucking noise which seemeda sifrear end couldfall off. Dealer unwilling to findcause ofdefect.consumer had old parts.

I am writing to call your attention to and seek assistance in remedying a problem faced by general motors (gm) owners nation-wide -- a problem gm refuses to accept responsibility for and correct fully even while nevertheless acknowledging it manufactured vehicles with flawed parts.the problem is engine bearing noise noise of the engines main and rod bearings knocking against the crankshaft and engine block.seems 1996 through 1999 gm models with either a 5.0l or 5.7l engine were defectively manufactured.permanent correction of the problem can place an unjustified and expensive hardship on the owner.additionally, the problem left uncorrected could result in engine failure while driving and therefore adversely affect safety on the nations highways. Thanks in advance for your help.

While driving front end axle came off. Dealer notified.

Front transmission seal wheel cylinder failed.

Vehicle exhibits a pronounced clunk upon immediate acceleration from stop.lubricating the front slip yoke internal splines eliminates the problem for approximately 200 miles.chevrolet acknowledges the problem an the annoyance to customers but does not have a permenant repair, this according to my dealer's service manager.other dealers reportedly attempt repairs with various types of grease and coatings, but problems persist.

Outside temp below freezing so iheated up my 1998 chevy tahoe(including heated leather seats on low setting) and when i returned to my vehicle less than 5 minutes later, driver's seat was on fire.vehicle has less that 90,000 miles and has not been mistreated.i happened to have a drink in my hand so i poured it on the seat to put it out.had i actually been sitting on the seat, i could have been seriously burned.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 10 mph, the brake pedal was engaged but the vehicle hesitated to respond without warning. The contact was able to avoid an accident. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the abs brake system failed and the front driver and the passenger side hub bearing assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred several times. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,000.

For a vehicle sold/operated in snow belt states, these lines should have been made out of stainless steel or some other non-ferrous alloy material.

Started truck, stepped on brake to engage reverse gear, pedal dropped almost to floor. Rear brake line rusty and fluid broke through near the gas tank area.

Brake sensor failed.

98 tahoe, has abs braking issue. When driving at slow speeds, the abs will engage during stopping and severely extend the stopping distance required to completely stop. Pedal is very spongy and does not respond like it should. Multiple shops have stated the abs is a repeating issue with the tahoes. Have had many close accidents and do not feel safe allowing others to drive vehicle as they are not used to the stopping distance required. This needs to be addressed.

Dt:the consumer complained about an abs problem.there was extended stopping distancein the stopping when the brakes were applied.the problem has been going on since september of 2004.recall05v379000was issued for the same problem but it was on the 1999 models.when the consumer took vehicleto dealerfor repairs they could not find the cause of the problem.the consumerhad the brake pad replaced.they turned the rotors.nothingfixed the problem.updated 11/17/2005.

My husband bought off a private party a 1998 tahoe, for a daughter.she has complained that at less than 10 miles an hour sometimes the brakes will fail.we have had the car checked out but they could not find a reason for the failure.i have her car and have been driving it i see also that at less than 10 miles an hour sometimes the brakes will fail.i called the chevy dealership and they said they have never heard of this --- something is wrong with this vehicles braking system and no one seems to know what it is.have you heard of this and if so what can i have done to correct this problem before an accident occurs.i am very concerned when i drive this vehicle.i believe my daughter did hit the back of another vehicle when it occurred to her -- i would say approximately 2 years ago.

1998 chevy tahoe wiring harness from brake pedal.brake wiring harness moves with brake pedal motion (i.e. When brakes are activated). Over time, this motion causes wires to break resulting in brake light failure.

Dt*:the contact stated while pulling out from a red light at 5 mph, a vehicle in front of the contact slammed on the brakes.when the contact went to apply the brakes, the abs engaged and the brake pedal went to the floor and the vehicles crashed.the contact's vehicle received no damage; however, the other vehicle sustained property damage to the rear bumper.the police were called to the scene although there were no injuries.gm stated because of the age and amount of mileage on the vehicle they would not cover any repairs, however they did pay for the inspection of the vehicle. Updated 06/30/06.

Contact states; abs system. At low speeds the abs the pump or something engages creating a soft sensation in the pedal, and it doesn't stop correctly. It was intermittent at first, but is now almost all of the time.

I have a 1998 chevrolet tahoe and i am having the same problems that the 1999's are that you just recalled. When you try to stop at slow speed the vehicle does not stop for a couple of feet.i have had the vehicle looked at and not one can find the problem.

There is a delay in the braking system whenabs is applied. Brake pedal is very spongy. Feels like air in the brakes. Have taken to dealership, and nothing could be resolved bymechanic.

Dt:the contact stated the abs was making a grinding noise on the driver's side.the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they found the grease was getting between the wheel bearings, causing them to slip.there was no remedy offered at that time.therefore, she disconnected the fuse for the abs in april 2005.when she recently tried to reconnect the fuse the grinding noise worsened and she disconnected the fuse.updated 12/27/2005 -

Abs brake system experiences intermittent failure in wet road condtions.

Vibration when applying brakes constantly.

Anti-lock brake falses at 6 mph.no difference if accelerating or de-accelerating.in the beginning the problem was intermitten, but with time the frequency of falsing increased.finally a trouble code set indicating the right front sensor.after following the procedures in the second edition of the c/k truck servce manual it was determined that the right sensor didn't pass the mv test.the sensor was repalced w/a sensor from a gm dealership.the sensor didn't correct the problem.after following the service manual it directs you to replace ebcm after additional testing.a ebcm was purchased at a gm dealership.the dealership did program in the correct tire size.the falsing at 6 mph contiunes with no improvement.a scan tool was plugged in with the following results:all three (3) sensors, the left, right sensor, and the rear wheel through the ecm.all three (3) sensors read the same until 6 mph is reached at which time the left front sensor will suddenly show 3 mph with the other two (2) sensors will still show 6 mph, the anti-lock falses.when the speed cheanges either > or < 6 mph, the falsing stops.the falsing occurrs with brake pedal applied or not.the mv test indicated the left front sensor was within spec's w/a mv read of 129.the left front sensor was replaced once again purchased from a gm dealership.the falsing continues and the test above with the scan tool was repeated with same results.the anti-lock does operate correctly when brakes are applied and a wheel slip takes place.your gm dealership can't really help without changing more componets.the problem exists today.number of failures:every time 6 mph.

The abs system activates on dry pavement at a slow gradual speed stop 75 percent of the time.this is an obvious defect caused by faulty engineering and manufacturing.

Anti lock brakes engage when under 10 mph, like moving around the parking lot.

When driving vehicle and applying brakes, there is a delayed time in panic situations. The first attempt by dealer in fixing problem, resulted in replacement of master cylinder booster.two days after that brakes degraded to apoint where there were no brakes at all, and gushy feeling when pressing brake pedal. In case of need for immediate stopping , brakes are dangerous .

My 1998 chevy tahoe has an abs event when coming to a stop at approximately 6 miles per hour.this just started happening at around 60k miles.it has gotten progressively worse as the miles accumulated.currently i have 80k on my suv.this increases my stopping distance an worries me about how much control i have if i need to stop quickly.i have not done anything yet to fix the problem.i just started researching this and found that there is a limited recall already happening on gm suvs and trucks from 1999 - 2002.i am scared to take it to the dealer due to the costs.everytime i come to a stop, the abs kicks on.

Dt*: the contact stated while applying the brake on wet pavement at speeds of 4 mph the anti-lock engages.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the anti-lock brakes.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.updated 03/03/06

When traveling 10 mph or under the anti-lockbrakes system starts making it hard to stop.

Brakes on 1998 chevy tahoe failed causing rear end collision. Abs brakes never came on abs light on ofter collision. Extenssive front end damage to vehicile srs system never deployed with major front end dammage.

Sometimes it feels like air is in the brake line.whenputting on brakesconsumer can feel the pad.but it won't stop. Also, when going over a series of bumps, vehicle won't stop.

Low speed antilock brake activation causing excessive stopping distances.dealer service rep stated that the abs sensors were corroded most likely from road salt.started out as very intermittent but recently became a constant problem.

1998 chevrolet truck should not have this many problems and considered safe

Brakes locked up and caused a crash.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, they went straight to the floorboard, also, motor went out without prior warning. Dealer had to replace the motor.

When applying brakes to come to a stop brake pedal would go to the floor. When this occurred, consumer would have to press harder to getvehicle to stop. Vehicle been todealer, and problem has reoccurred. Feel free to provide any further information.

Spongy brakes very weak, and the feels that it won't stop. Dealer states that those cars have that feel, and it is normal.

Dt: the contact states there isnhtsa recall campaign 05v370000 concerning the anti lock brakes. This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but is not included in the recall due to the vin. No repairs have been made.

My brakes on my 1998 tahoe, which i am the original owner, have had to be replaced 3 times.the anti-lock system engages on dry pavement causing the vehicle not to stop.this vehicle currently has 37,000 miles on it. Gm will not fix because they say the warranty is up. I feel this is a defect and should be recalled.i have readthat the systems on the newer vehicles have been improved because the one i have is substandard for the vehicles.the cost to repair this system is considerable, when i questioned the dealer they could not give me an accurate sum because as they got further into fixing it there is no way of knowing how much it will cost until it was done.who is to say it would work properly when they finished and i would have spent well over a thousand dollars.

Abs brakes; when applying brakes in normal conditions and in panic stops, the pedal goes to the floor and brakes fail to stop the vehicle. Please provide further details.

1998 tahoe abs braking problem. Abs system engages at low speed making it very hard to stop vehicle safely.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet tahoe. At low speeds he experienced unwanted anti-lock brake (abs) activation. The condition leads to extended stopping distances. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer for inspection. The current and failure mileages were 104000.

Abs activation at low speeds for past 9 months on a 1998 chevrolet tahoe recalls in my state applicable to 1999 & newer despite gm service bulletins of models of 1995 & up affected by problem. Paid dealer to clean abs since gm refused.

Consumer stated that while driving and without warning abs would stick, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified.

Consumer was traveling about 5mph, backing up and he hit a tree. He appliedbrakes, andpedal went all the way tofloor .abs braking system didn't kick in at all. Also, therewas fluid leaking from the brakes. Dealership was aware of the problem.

Abs system engages and creates dangerous brake sponginess. I have a difficult time stopping this vehicle. I have taken it to numerous dealers who attribute the problem to the existing recall on similar gm light trucks and suv's related to oxidation/corrosion of the brake system. I would like this fixed.

I have had a problem with the abs brake not working now for about 2 years.the abs will kick in at 10 mph or less and will not stop the vehicle.the vehicle will slide and the tires just lock up.if i release and pump the brake, i am able to stop.i have learned to drive very slowly when coming to a stop but i feel that in an emergency, i may not be able to stop at all. I notice that gm has put out a recall for this exact same thing.they recently added mn & wi to that recall but not the earlier years.my tahoe is a 1998.i don't feel i should have to pay for repairs of a bad sensor, which is what a service tech had told me 2 years ago, when there is a known problem with the sensors.this is something that happens every single time i apply my brakes.

When brakes are damp, they grab hard enough to tossconsumer through the windshield.when brakes havewarmed up, this does not happen.the dealer was contacted.

A current investigation esists (pe05-020) for unwanted abs brake activation on model year 1999 - 02 gm c/k series vehicles in salt belt states.this investigation should be further expanded to include, at least, model year 1998 as this condition is also exhibited in this vehicle.reference vehicle is a 1998 chevrolet tahoe with 63,000 miles.condition has existed for more than 2 years.during this time repairs were made to correct the problem, which were effective for less than a year.problem condition has returned.problem has resulted in minor contact with other vehicles and objects in that a driver can not predict when the problem will occur and braking distance is extended even on dry pavement.situation is worsened when in "reverse" and problem occurs.

Brake pedal goes completely to the floor. Pads & master cylinder were replaced, butproblem persists.techincal team frommanufacturerhas inspected it, and couldn't find anything. They said it was the best the system wouldbe.

Abs brakes systemroad grime wedged into plastic piece covering the abs sensor causing salt corrosion and improper activation of the abs brake system.

Dt*:the contact stated the abs activates at low speeds. There is a nhtsa recall, #05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

23 december 2003, while in stop and go traffic my truck would not stop until i pumped the brake pedal. I came within inches of rear-ending another vehicle. Right out of the blue, no warning, the same situation, the pedal went right down to the floor. The next morning i called lannan. The earliest appointment i could get was for friday, 2 january 2004.2 january 2004, while driving to lannan, in woburn square, i nearly hit a lady who stepped out in front of my truck, while she was in the crosswalk. I received the ''evil eye'' of a policeman standing nearby. At lannan, i was informed by service pro, mr. O''malley that the problem with my brakes was due to a dirty abs sensor. I read (enclosed) service bulletin #02-05-25-006a. See enclosed lannan invoice #ctcs203241. I paid $278.25 to clean off the rust.i can not appreciate why an abs sensor (responsible for stopping large vehicles safely) is mounted on a corrosive material that will eventually degrade sensor communication. This degradation prevents large vehicles from stopping at all '' this is not acceptable.i cannot appreciate why there is no warning to the driver when the abs sensor communication is impaired. I cannot appreciate why i was not informed of the potential danger.all those people driving all of those listed vehicles could inflict all kinds of damage and injury to others because of impaired abs sensor communication. Why is there no scheduled maintenance on those sensors? is there a recall? should there be a recall? are you retrofitting? the people who own those listed vehicles should be notified of the potential danger. What type of abs sensors are you using on the other vehicles in your fleet?do you have any idea of what a predicament i would be in today if i hit that lady? at my trial, how well would it be received when they read about the abs activation at low speeds? it would not help that lady that could have been lying under my 5,000 lbs truck.

While trying to stop while driving at a slow speed my absfail causing my vehicle not to stop and in 2 incidences we have hit other vehicles.spoke with dealer and they said abs sensor is problem.this is recalled in the same vehicle in 1999 but my vehicle is a 1998.

Antilock brake activation at low speeds (< 5mph). Sounds same as recall 05v37900. Started out intermittent, now occurs 80% of time. Dangerous as it effects stopping distance as you approach to make a stop. Dealer will not address as recall is for 1999+, my tahoe is 1998.

Brakes on 1998 chevy tahoe failed causing rear end collision. Abs brakes never came on abs light on ofter collision. Extenssive front end damage to vehicile srs system never deployed with major front end dammage.

Consumer states there was a pulsation in the brakes. Took to dealer and dealer replaced brake shoes, drums, rotors, pads, proportioning belt. Consumer states is pulsating again.please provide any further information.nlm

Brakes pulsate, on several occasions vehicle experiencing vibration in front end when braking, right side locked up when turning.

Front end shimmy at speeds over 50mph. Balanced and rebalanced tires, aligned front end 3 times in 6 months. Finally replaced all 4 tires w/new firestone tires. Aligned front end w/new tires. 3 months later, rotated and balanced tires - front end shimmy continues to occur. Have tried alignment, balancing tires, and new tires. Not acceptable to have significant front end shimmy beginning at 15000 miles. Also increased vibration when braking - rotors have already been replaced twice and vibration that shakes steering wheel continues to occur when braking.

Brake pedal goes completely to the floor. Pads & master cylinder were replaced, butproblem persists.techincal team frommanufacturerhas inspected it, and couldn't find anything. They said it was the best the system wouldbe.

Brake rotors and pads failed causing vibration.

When the brake was applied, the vehicle stopped abruptly.the next day, the front left wheel started to shake, the dealer stated the front rotor had sheared off from the mounting bolt. There was arecall regarding the issue, recall # 98v033000, however the vehicle identification number was not included.

The front brake rotor/hubs failed while driving vehicle. The brake rotors were replaced by an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not under recall #98v033000. Please provide more information. *nlm

Consumer's vehiclehas the same problem asmentioned in recall 98v033000 concerning brake:disc:rotors. Dealer would not repair becausevinwas not included.

Brake rotors became warped at 15,000,causing the brakes to be inoperative. It also may reduce braking ability and cause an accident.replaced rotors 3 times.cause unknown.please provide details.

Brake booster malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance which could result in a crash. Also, dealer replaced brake rotors.please provide further information.

Rotors went bad, they kept wearing out.had rotors changed twice. Contacted dealer noted that there was no problem.

Brake pedal goes completely to the floor. Pads & master cylinder were replaced, butproblem persists.techincal team frommanufacturerhas inspected it, and couldn't find anything. They said it was the best the system wouldbe.

Bad master brake cylinder, causing brakes to fail.when applied the brake pedal goes to the floor. Dealer has been contacted.

Brake booster malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance which could result in a crash. Also, dealer replaced brake rotors.please provide further information.

Brake booster assembly failed.

Abs brake problems; when applying the brakes under normal road condition, normal braking situation, the pedal travels completely to the floor, and there is a loss of braking ability. Dealer stated that the brake booster was bad.

Brake power booster failure. Caused extended and unsafe stopping distance.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet tahoe.the contact stated that the steering was very loose.through online research, he discovered the defect and called chevrolet and gm.he was informed that there was no recall for the vehicle.the failure and current mileages were 115,000.

1998 chevy tahoe loose steeringat highway speed when going thru a slight curve it feels as though you hit a patch of ice. The steering wheel has a slight jerk that scares the life out of you. Replaced steering sensor, steering box, entire front end and it still does it..there needs to be a recall on this problem.

While driving and making turns steering wheel became loose. Dealership serviced vehicle and replaced evo sensor.

Steering pulls to the right.

While driving on the highway the driver changed lanes and the vehicles steering wheel turned further than driver turn it. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who stated that the evo sensor needed to be replaced.

When turning the steering wheel to the right feels like driving on ice.when it is cold the steering feel like this all the time till the tahoe warms up then i am back therandom turning. Will not let anyone in my household drive the tahoe because of this. Found a bunch of other tahoes with this problem on the internet and it sounds like the steering evo sensor is bad. Looks like the tahoe would send some type of message to inform the driver to have this repaired or a bypass installed in case of failure.

4-wheel steering: front sensor activates while driving, making it feel likeriding on ice.dealer has been contacted.dealer replaced steering wheel position sensor.

At highway speeds feels like truck is hydroplaning/sliding to the right and a brief lost or loose feeling in the steering wheel..... Front end has been checked and everything is good/tight.

Intermittently when truck is being driven on straight or curved road, the steering feels loose and uncontrollable, then returns to normal.problem is very noticeable in cold weather.

Steering wheel sensor failed.

Recently i sent my chevrolet tahoe (1998) to the dealer in rochester, new york. We had concerns due to the fact that the truck steering was extraordinarily narrow in turning radius since we bought it. Within the last few months we noticed that while the truck was stationary, or in park, if we tried to turn the wheel it would stick until we moved a little and then it would free itself.

The vehicle experienced problems with the steering mechanism.the vehicle lost power steering.the 2nd issue involved the windshield wipers which worked intermittently. *phthe steering wheel position sensor was replaced. *scc

While driving the steering wheel would make a sharp right or left which caused the consumer to jerk the steering wheel back in place.the dealer was notified. *nlmevo sensor replaced.

Vehicle constantly pulls to the left, consumer feels this is a safety issue because sometimes there is traffic present.

Steering wheel jerks and pulls to the right like the vehicle is out of control.also, windshield wipers operate intermittently.

Vehicle has consistently pulled to the right since purchase. Vehicle has been aligned three times within first 30,000 miles. Dealership contends nothing wrong with vehicle. This problem has ruined the tires of the vehicle, as well. I have contacted manufacturer re: florida lemon law, as well as fl state attorney general (i have not heard back from state ag office in 6 weeks).

Consumer noticed while traveling at various speeds thatvehicle would "wander" slightly toright problemwas more noticeable at higher speeds. Had vehicle tire leak repaired. Seemed to correct problem temporarily. Had brakes checked, and frontmend allignment and everything else was okay.

When turning steering wheel from changing lanes or making turns ,steering wheel will begin to jerk/shake which could cause loss of control.dealer has done front end alignment, defect is still occurring. Dealer cannot determine problem.

Truck vibrates at speeds of 45 miles per hour.truck has been taken for inspection and the following has been done:change tires three times, rotate all tires, pitman arms have been changed, brakepads have been changed, roters replaced, shocks replaced, allignment , balancing of tires, steering stabalizer done, with all this this truck continues with the same problem.the manufacturer has never been able to fix the problem even when it was under warranty.we are unable to find a solution to this problem and wonder if this truck model has been recalled.the problem continues.please help!

I was about to go on vacation, so had to install (4) new tires (goodyear). Rv traders in contact with the tire manufacturer agreed to re-imburse me at $50.00 per tire after i sent a letter to the manu describiong the circumstances. This i did on july 21, 2000. I have yet to hear from the manufacturer in chelsea, ma.( dot number: cfkcmt2389 tire size: st205/75r1 )

I seem to have a problem with my abs brakes. I believe it was a contributing factor in 1 accident. Resulting in damage to 2 trucks. It was repaired but the bodyshop, associated with a gm dealer, failed to repair and or indentify the brake problem.

I have had nothing but headaches with this tahoe. No safety defect listed.

No air out of vents: o-ring crushed, due to factory installment.

Location of power window control panel on drivers side door panel placed where if drivers leg touches the right power window switch the passenger side window can be opened inadvertently.power window control panel should be relocated higher.this problem occurs when rounding and corner and ones knee rest on this panel.

Window motor failed.

Dt:the contact previously owned a 1995 gmc suburban and the windshield wipers would work sometimes and other times they would not. Now contact owns a 1998 chevrolet tahoe . He took his son yesterday to try for his driver's license and the dmv told his son to turn the wipers on, and they would not work. So after that he took the vehicle to the local mechanic, and they worked for him. The mechanic tried wipers several times and they worked every time. The contact is worried that it was intermittent and that could be a safety hazard because if there waswet conditions and the wipers messed up then it would obviously cause an accident because he would not be able to see. The experience he has now with the wipers is the same as with his last vehicle. The contact went on a website consumer affairs.com/automotive/gm_tahoe_wipers.html and found several complaints that consumers filed on the same vehicle with the same problem. The contact has two nhtsa campaign id numbers for the same problem that he is having with hisvehicle. Recalls 03v159000 and 98v150001.

Windshield wipers often do not come on or will come on and stop. This first occurred in 2000. The first time this happened, it left me stranded on the side of an interstate highway. The man who stopped to assist me hit a box under the hood to make the wipers come on. This action has started the wipers ever since.

While driving from boerne, tx to dallas, tx the windshield wipers failed during a rainstorm while on highway.i have had to have the dealer replace the windshield wiper module.there have already been two other recalls by gm on 1994-1997 and 2002-2003 suvs for the exact same problem; windshield wiper module failure.

The windshield wipers of our 1998 tahoe stopped working.sometimes we would have to push them to get them started, other times we would have to jiggle the wiring to get them going.they would sometimes work for the remainder of the trip, other times they would stop every few minutes.there is no consistency to when they will work.we were stranded out of town in a heavy rainstorm.this is the same problem as the 94-97 recall and needs to be included.i spoke with chevrolet and a local dealer.both actedlike they knew nothing about the problem until i mentioned the prior recall, then they just said we were not covered.this is a serious safety problem and chrvrolet needs to be held accountable for fixing the problem.

The windshield wipers on my 1998 tahoe sometimes stop working. This started about a month ago, at first they would at times hesitate. Last week during a heavy rain they stopped in mid cycle. I pulled to the side of the road and ,as i slowed down they began to work. They did not stop again but they did hesitate 3 or 4 times over the next 15 minutes.i was told by local chevrolet dealer that there was a recall on the 1997 tahoe for failure of the windshield wiper module. My tahoe was an early 98 production.do ihave a windshield wiper module that should have been recalled?*nlm

I am having the same problem with my 1998 tahoe as was recalled on the 1994-1997 vehicles in regard to the circuit board on my windshield wipers. I was driving on the ih-93 nb at 55 mph. Suddenly the car began pulling to the right. I stopped and checked the tires, but did not see any problems. All four tires were inflated to the specs (35 psi). I kept driving, and after 20-25 miles i heard a sound as if something was rubbing in the front passenger fender area. I began slowing down and wanted to stop. At that moment my front right tire separated. It was a primewell valera ht 235/75-15 tire, installed at a firestone shop in plaistow, nh in november, 2014 with a few hundred miles on it.

I own a 1998 chevrolet tahoe in which i had to pay over $900 to have repaired to repair/replace front hub assemblies.this is for the same work that gm has recalled 1999 and newer vehicles that are used in areas of the country that use road salt. Those repairs were made just prior the recall that i think your agency forced gm to call for the very same issue.i contacted gm and was told that they only recall vehicles based on the number of complaints by year.the fact that the design is identical in my and the 1999 model was a non issue as far as they are concerned.i intend to look into a civil suit since i have no idea about how much time will be involved, but even though this may not help me, i thought that i could at least add my experience and name to see if it will generate sufficient numbers for gm to care about doing the right thing and adding this year to the recall.i am using the date that i first wrote to gm but my repairs were done 8/12/04.they assigned service request # 1 387872013 and told me that they were not even sure if i live in a state that is subject to the recall.they are wrong about that as well.although i was not injured, it is only because i spent my own money when i went in complaining about the same thing that is now part of the recall.

Noise due to loose bolt and nut.yh

Sometimes when i am driving the steering wheel shakes,i can drive on the same road and it may not. I have had the front end aligned by the chevy dealer in which i bought the tahoe and also had new tires put on at the same time.it seems like it will go away for awhile and then it comes right back and then i have to have the tires rotated because of bumps forming on the tires and this happens in a very short time.i have had it aligned by 3 different dealers and they say it is in spec and that is all they do. I have just put another set of tires on it and it is starting to do it again. I have been told that there were some bad rims manufactured that year, could that be part of my problem.
