The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet tahoe. While the vehicle was parked, the contact stated that the front right and left frame rails for the air bag sensor were separating and rotting. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the parts for repair were no longer manufactured. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 140,000.
Wiring harness has corrosion in it up near the firewall.appears that the wiring harness was defective (damaged) during the assembly process.corrosion on ground side of air bag arming circuit means that in a collision the air bag will not deploy.dealer says that this is not a warranty item.corrosion in the air bag arming circuit could also cause it to deploy when it should not, leading to an accident.isn't there unlimited warranty on safety systems and pollution control systems?
Crashed 1996 tahoe going about 45 mph,no airbags deployed, causing head injury. Not sure of date it was fall of 2002.
I have a 1996 chevy tahoe which i have been the original owner since new.i recently had maintenance performed on the vehicle and had the shop check the drivers side air bag because the check air bag indicator light was coming on during the operation of the vehicle.the repair shop indicated to me that the sensor needed to be replaced but the sensor was no longer available even after a states wide search was performed.i contacted general motors only to find out the part has been discontinued and no replacement part is available.the part number from gm is #16162465 and there is no after market parts.is general motors still responsible for a replacement part for this required safety item or what do you suggest i do to correct this problem?

My son was driving the tahoe about 60 mph on a highway. A pickup trunk pulled out in front of him. The tahoe hit the pickup trunk squarely in the side. The airbags in the tahoe did not deploy. However, the airbags in the pickup truck did deploy. Chevy said this is normal and refused to investigate. I don't understand how the tahoe airbags did not deploy as it hit the pickup truck squarely in the side at a high rate of speed. Why would the pickup trunk airbags deplo,y and not the tahoe? particularly since the pickup was only hit on the side and had very little forward motion. Damage to tahoe was rated at fd-5 and to the pickup at ld-6 by the police department. Both vehicles were not driveable and had to be towed. My son was wearing his seatbelt and only suffered from whiplash. However, once the vehicle is repaired, how can i ever trust the airbag system again if it is ever needed.

At this time i would like to know if the paperwork was received, if there is a number i should call to follow up or is there another way i can check on the status of complaint. Occasionally when starting the truck there is a misfire/backfire from the engine where grey smoke permeates through the dashboard into the cabin of the truck.smoke also comes from under the hood of the truck.dealership could not duplicate misfire/backfire.this happens a few times a month.
My husband was driving our 1996 tahoe when it just stopped!we found that the key had shut off while driving.we were inthe middle of a thruway when everyone was driving 60 mph.a very dangerous situation indeed.this has happened 3 times in the year i've owned the vehicle.we are also having a problem with the wipers working intermittently and sometimes get stuck in the middle of the windshield or jumping across the windshield pop, pop, pop.etc.

The problem i had is similar to one you are investigating against chevrolet.my vehicle wouldn't start and it was discovered that the battery leaked acid and i had to have the battery assembly, terminals and battery replaced.i just wanted to add my complaint to the 200+ you have so far.please feel free to contact me if you'd like.thank you.
I have a 96 chevy tahoe. It has 37,000 miles and is, therefore, just outside the 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. I have talked to several other chevy truck owners and they tell me that chevy trucks have a problem with batteries. Though the battery is rated at 72 months, it only lasts for approximately 24 months. I have asked two different mechanics at the chevy dealer (macpherson chevrolet) and they say that it is true - batteries only last about 2 years. They also admit that they replace hundreds of batteries, often repeatedly on the same vehicles. They also tell me that in their opinion it is a gm design defect that the manufacturer has chosen to ignore. I have now replaced the battery twice (this is the third battery in the vehicle). The first time gm paid for it under the warranty. The second time it was just out of warranty so i had to pay for it. I also had to pay for repair of a battery cable that leaking battery fluid had damaged. Though the dealer admits that the 72 month warranty is printed right on the battery, they say that the warranty ends with all other warrantees at 36,000 miles. That is gm policy and they showed me a memo from gm saying so. I had planned to keep this vehicle for a couple of years. However i do not relish the thought of having a very unreliable vehicle when i travel for any distance, knowing that the battery may go dead at any time. By the way, when this happens, due to the all electronic nature of the engine, nothing works - the engine dies, the power brakes no longer work, and the power steering no longer works, even at freeway speed. The battery acid is leaking on electrical, steering and brake line and frame of vehicle.
Battery failed.
The battery failed after 2 years (5 year battery).the failure caused battery acid to spill all over the electrical harness and cause major electrical damage.this is the second battery they installed, and i believe gmc should re-imburse me for the damage it caused to my vehicle.
Battery has a crack, causing acid leaks through battery plate onto floor. Dealer/mfr. Notified. Problem has not been resolved at this time.

My 3 year old nephew was able to get into his parents 1996 chevy tahoe and was able to turn the key to the first click (before the click to turn on the radio and power windows, etc.).then without touching the brake, the toddler was able to pull the shifter into neutral and the vehicle was able to move.the toddler either was thrown from the vehicle or was scared and jumped and was run over by the vehicle and killed. All models and makes of vehicles can do this with the exception of honda, toyota and 2001 or newer dodge vehicles.

While drivingat 20 mph consumer smelledburning wiring. Parked the vehicle, opened the hoodand found nothing wrong.at the same time he looked to the rear and saw a heavy smoke coming from the passenger's side and suddenlyvehicle caught on fire. Fire department showed up, extinguished the fire,and wrote a report indicating there was short wire on the speaker.
While driving along the boulevard at 15 mph, the smell of burning electrical wires became more pronounced. When i looked through the rear view mirror i saw fire dropping from the rear passenger side speaker endangering the lives of the passengers and damaging our possesions in the cargo section. I notified the fire department and they extinguished the fire.
This complaint is to be filed to the previous nhtsa action number pe99073. No safety defect mentioned in summary.

The wiring harness that conects to the turn signal modual, the wires become brittle and are breaking. The first wire to cause me a problem was the wire for the headlights, the headlights would flicker on and off untill the wire finaly broke and then there were no lights at all. The next wire that broke is the wire for the cruise control broke. And now there is no cruise control. The headlights i was able to reroute the wire and reconect to the light switch to powerup the relay with the switch. Not the right way too do it but it works. Also my vehicle has tilt steering wheel.

While driving at usual speed of 35 mph,down a steep hill my wife was terrified when suddenly the engine failed, steering and braking became difficult and, in her mind, nothing was working. She missed a number of cars at the bottom of the hill and pulled into a vacant gas station. The engine started for me after she called me on her cell phone and it was difficult to understand what had happened but the same thing happened to me driving and i understood the stress that she endured. The chevy agency(chase motors in middleboro mass was nice and curtious and stated that the problem had been fixed at no coast to us. The identical thing happened again ? time between and again the chase chevy replaced the part and stated that this had been fixed and would not happen again. It is happening again and my wife states that she will never drive the car again. In talking to a representative at gmc he stated that although that was dangerous at 40 mph to happen they did not consider that a safety issue

Recall 03v159000component: visibility:windshield wiper/washer is related to the failure. The dealer confirmed that the vin is not related to the recall. The dealer also wrote on the invoice that the windshield wipers are working temporarily and can fail at anytime. The corporate office of gm was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 147956 and current mileage was 148114.updated 01/08/09 the consumer stated the problems started when the vehicle would not start. It was determined the problem was the fuel pump. The headlights were not coming on. The consumer requested that the headlight switch be looked at.the vehicle began to shake and stall and white smoke emitted from the muffler. The check engine light also illuminated. Updated 01/09/09.

Consumer states that a defect in the mulitfunction switch, causes her to have no brake lights. Dealer replaced part 3 times, problem still occuring. Nlmserpentine belt tensioner coming apart.disconnect nipple fitting leaking.wipers slapping on windshield and has no speed and/or intermittent wiper operation.dealer found needs wiper motor and wiper transmission.
Water pump bracket installed wrong at factory, causing serpentine belt to wear through/break, as well as engine to overheat and radiator to overflow. *dh

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet tahoe. While driving 55 mph, the four wheel drive light illuminated and began flashing. There was smoke underneath the hood and the vehicle stalled. After opening the hood, the smoke continued to multipy; however, there was no fire present. A police report was filed. The contact provide more details after receiving a copy of the police report. The vehicle was towed to an auto repair shop. The failure and current mileage was 168,000.

Intake manifold leaks can lead to any number of very serious, and expensive, problems. While the part itself isn't costly, the labor to repair it is very intensive, and has been quoted around $800 usd (give or take a couple hundred depending on the vehicle). This is in addition to any other costly problem(s) the intake manifold gasket leak may have produced. We are demanding accountability from general motors. A nationwide backorder should be reason enough for gm to assemble a recall. We can only hope that the world's largest vehicle manufacturer who has been the world's automotive sales leader since 1931 will stand up and claim responsibility for a problem that is so prevalent among their vehicles. Recalls should be mandated in all cases of incompetence, not solely when it affects public safety.while some of us have been fortunate enough to have this problem occur within our warranty, there are many others of us that have had to pay for these expensive repairs just after the warranty expires. Because gm has refused to admit liability on this issue, we feel that this will be a repetitive problem. Once this gasket has been replaced, and customers pockets drained, gm service centers everywhere can expect to see consumers returning, for this same problem that hasn't been rectified due to a designing flaw on gm's part. This error should have been corrected, not the first time in for service, but before entering mass production in millions of vehicles.can one presume this is one way of keeping general motors patrons coming back time after time?*nlm

1996 tahoe headlight failure. When flipping the switch to turn o headlights they do not turn on. Spent almost $200 in diagnostic time. The repair shop says the wiring in the steering column is fatigued and frayed most likely due to repeated adjustments with the tilt steering wheel. Very expensive to repair. Using middle position with daytime running lights until i can get it repaired. This is a serious safety issue as the light cut out while i was driving home in the dark. Good thing the drl work.

The location of the brake line has caused a hole to rub in the gas tank. ) while driving at high speeds the headlights go off and eventually they come back on after the switch cools off. Service engine soon light illuminated and engine was running rough and misfiring, dealer replaced defective fuel injector, fuel filter, 3 injectors, distributor cap and a set of spark plug wires.

Replaced fuel pump on 7/27/02. Fuel pump failed due to electrical problems again on 7/28/02. Electrical connection to pump replaced and 2nd replacement pump installed on 7/30/02. Total cost of repairs $665.58. Safety recall tsb #98044, aug. 98 "fuel tank" - may contact body sill. I don't know if this was ever corrected on my vehicle. I am the second owner. It is possible that this recall was the cause of the problems with my vehicle.

Fuel pump electrical system failure.not sure if it is a defect but alarming just the same.wiring harness/connections on fuel pump and sending unit inside of fuel tank melted, overheated and burned. While this may be an isolated incident to my vehicle mechanics informed me that i was extremely lucky car did not catch on fire and tank ignite. .
The pump on this vehicle has gone out 8 times with the most recent the24 of decthe vehicle just dies or stops in traffic .it also leaves no codes in the computer .i have talked to other diesel owners who are also having problems with the diesel fuel pump .this is not unique to just tahoe all the gm 6.5 are affected , gm has sent out an extentsion of the warranty to 120000 on 1994-2000 vehicles w/ diesel enginesyet we continue to replace the pump every 8000-15000 miles.

Dt: the consumer stated that there is a faulty fuel pressure regulator in1996 chevrolet tahoe truck. This was noted on 7-12-05.a representative from the gm call center told the consumer that there was an upcoming recall on this part and that the fuel lines melt causing the fuel pressure regulator to go bad.

My problem is with the transmission,i have had two transmission installed in my chevy tahoe.i have a number of friends that either have the chevy tahoe ,or the suburban . We all had the same problem(transmission).i spoke with one of the service advisor at one of the local chevy dealers and he spoke of many problems that they had with the 60o series. My 3 year old daughter was able to shift the vehicle from park into neutral without the key in the ignition and without depressing the brake causing the vehicle to roll backward into the street.no accident or injuries occurred as my father was able to reach over and hit the brakes.

4th transmission failure in 4 years.on the last rebuild, i had the dealership repair the defective wire harness per the tsb but apparently it did not help.the dealership and chevrolet both say it is not their problem but i think there is a defect and it is their problem.

Since july of 2000 consumer has had transmission replaced 6 times.
Transmission failed as left parking space at low speed by making a loud rattling sound. Lost power to the wheels. Dealer confirms complete transmission failure and need to replace at cost of $2,000. This vehicle has not had heavy use and should not have a transmission failure until at least 100,000 miles instead of 44,000 miles. Warranty is 36,000 and no extended warranty purchased. This is the 2nd time within a2 years that transmission went out 1 year 7 months after i purchased a new transmission. This is the 3rd transmission with a 5 years period. Never hauled anything, normal driving on regular roads. Never been on a dirt road.
My 3 year old nephew was able to get into his parents 1996 chevy tahoe and was able to turn the key to the first click (before the click to turn on the radio and power windows, etc.).then without touching the brake, the toddler was able to pull the shifter into neutral and the vehicle was able to move.the toddler either was thrown from the vehicle or was scared and jumped and was run over by the vehicle and killed. All models and makes of vehicles can do this with the exception of honda, toyota and 2001 or newer dodge vehicles.

This model has the manual transfer case shift lever. Although the lever moves correctly in the various positions, such as 2wd., 4wd. High 4wd. Low, neutral and makes the usual noises when shifting, the four wheel drive is not engaging nor is the indicator light , showing the front axle is engaged, lighting up.this has caused several close calls in" almost accidents" and almost being stranded.we live in a rural setting where there is a 11 mile distance between some neighborsandvery sparse cell phone access.the point being that when we buy a vehicle with 4 wheel drive , we expect it to work and our lives depend on it!in this case a front wheel drive car would provide better traction, having the weight of the engine over the drive wheels, rather than having the light rear end wheels trying to push the heavy front end of a truck around.when you are driving a vehicle expecting it to perform as a four wheel drive vehicle, such as in steering and added grip and maneuverability, the unexpected surprise equals that of a brake failure!your help and researchin this matter is appreciated.i have had nothing but a ignorant, lying.and expensive experience with my local chevrolet dealer and have had to take itto another state for any repairs.thanks!
Electronic transfer case 4-wheel drive switch locked up all 4 wheels when disengaging 4-wheel drive.
Computer chip failed, and vehicle willnot start at all.dealership replaced computer chip, and noted that windshield wipers will not work. Consumer stated that the alternator, fuel pump, fuel filter, daytime running lamps, airconditioner, and computer brain were all replaced.
Took vehicle in for 4-wd problem, and when vehicle was picked up it had no power steering. Dealer calims failure was due to cold weather starts. Power steering units should not fail with only 44000 miles . Could have caused serious accident if it had failed while on the road. Dealer charged $350.00 to repair and dismissed concern that this should not happen.

I entered my vehicle and when i sat in the driver's seat the front left frame bracket on the seat snapped.the welding apparently broke.this vehicle has never been off-road and i am not obese.now, when i sit in the seat, it leans back in an uncomfortable and, most importantly, dangerous position.the seat moves back and forth everytime the accelerator and/or brake pedal is depressed.i tried to have gm fix this, because it is obviously a defect, as welding should not come undone under normal operating conditions.gm would not accept the responsibility to fix this defect.

Driver power seat will not operate . I have read similar complaints on the web about the failure of seat working properly and has there been a recall? i have owned the vehicle new and the only driver. I only weight 90lbs.

I have been made aware of failures in the power seat riser assembly in 95-96 chevy tahoes, causing the seat assembly to first become loose, and eventually fail. The outcome of the failure results in the driver faling backwards due to the fact that the seat is no longer intact with the rest of the assembly. The first indication of a problem is a "rocking" type movement in the seat mechanism when under acceleration/deceleration, which becomes obvious over a period of time. My truck was taken to the dealer for this complaint while it was under warranty, and of course they could not find the problem. It has since gotten progressively worse. From my understanding the cost for a consumer to replace the defective component to prevent a failure is in excess of $300. I am not aware of any crashes as a result of the seat failure, but there have been some close calls. From my understanding most of the failures occurred when the vehicle driver was seated and making a movement while the vehicle was not in motion.

My '96 chevrolet tahoe 2-door suffered complete brake system loss when a brake line burst while in-service.the tahoe, used primarily in illinois in the winter, suffered the failure in may of 2008 withabout 102,000 miles accumulated and with no with no priorindications of a problem prior to the complete failure.the brake line simplyburst/ failed completely when the line (mounted to the firewall below the radiator) completely failed, leaving blown out gapabout an inchlongin the line. The truck was slowing to a stop sign when then line failed and the brake pedal went down to the floor, so there was no collateral damage. The vehicle was towed immediately to a repair shop for estimation and repairs (not a chevy garage). These repairs required complete vehicle brake line replacement (except to the front ant-lock unit) and complete system component replacement (except for the master cylinder). I thought the failure was random until i recently saw an article on the topic in print by jerry hirsch, staff writerfor the los angeles times, business section where other similar failures on similar models were noted. The repairs cost close to $2,000 and, if there are other campaigns on this model, i would like to research them to determine if poor design by general motors/chevrolet division is responsible for these repairs and how to go about adding my vehicle to that campaign. I have kept the vehicle registered in my name and currently own a 2004 chevrolet, so my contact information would have been on-file with gm such that proper notifications could have been made. I had no idea that this type of failure was part of gms faulty design history or that any campaign was underway pertaining to brake line failures until i saw the article printed by mrjerry hirsch as note d above.

Accident ron a major highway. There was a sudden stop in traffic.we were a least at an eight second following distance. When we try to stop the rear passenger tire locked up. Our truck slammed into a full sized truck which then in turn crashed into a minivan. Damages totaled over $15,000 this is the second major accident with this vehicle.

If we drive in the nearby smokey mountains the brakes begin to smoke soon after starting downhill where more braking than usual is required. We have been told by the gmc dealer where we purchased the tahoe that the brakes on the 1996 vehicle were too small and have since been upgraded on later vehicles. Yet they charge us to replace the brake discs or cylinder. We basically can not drive in any mountain areas with just passengers, much less pulling anything.

At a speed of 50 mph i applied brakes on the approach of a stop light. The brake pedal went down about two inches and then catapulted up vary quickly. At this point the pedal was very hard. Which if the vacuum booster failed it should have left me with hydraulic manual brakes, and it did not. I had to stop the truck with the emergency brake after rolling through a red light at about 30 to 40 mph. I replaced the vacuum booster and it fixed the problem. Chevy customer service dept. Was called and a case was opened #c06749958. This is unacceptable like it failed, this could have been a loss of life issue. Vehicle's electronic 4-wheel drive switched from 2-wheel to 4-wheel drive by itself.
Was driving vehicle when steering wheel retracting rod came loose and vehicle lost control. Hit a tree after leaving road. Air bags did not deploy upon impact. Noticed under hood nut & bolt was left out from manufacturer.

I believe chevrolet is not concerned about this problem occuring in other tahoe/suburbans.i would like to see a recall on this type of vehicle, because i was very lucky in not causing any accidents or fatalities.
Took vehicle in for 4-wd problem, and when vehicle was picked up it had no power steering. Dealer calims failure was due to cold weather starts. Power steering units should not fail with only 44000 miles . Could have caused serious accident if it had failed while on the road. Dealer charged $350.00 to repair and dismissed concern that this should not happen.

The tread/belt on one tire started to separate from the inner casing.the saleman at discount tire spotted one other tire showing signs of impending failure.i still have a spare from the same set.the others have been replaced.with the ford/firestone problems, i thought this tire may be indicating another manufacturing problem.the salesman said he has seen quite a number of the same problem.thank you, chris mccrate. I had a 1996 tahoe that occasionally sped up while on cruise control.i sol this vehicle about four y ears ago.

The wiring harness that conects to the turn signal modual, the wires become brittle and are breaking. The first wire to cause me a problem was the wire for the headlights, the headlights would flicker on and off untill the wire finaly broke and then there were no lights at all. The next wire that broke is the wire for the cruise control broke. And now there is no cruise control. The headlights i was able to reroute the wire and reconect to the light switch to powerup the relay with the switch. Not the right way too do it but it works. Also my vehicle has tilt steering wheel.
The engine began accelerating on its own, it continued to get faster and faster, techometer red lined.had to ram the gear into park in orderto stop the car.

1996 chevrolet tahoe. The left windshield wiper works and the right windshield wiper does not. This began while my husband was driving in the rain and resulted in very limited visibility. He went to auto zone to replace the wipers and when they replaced the right wiper, it did not correct the problem.i am taking it in for repair today. I have been told that it is probably the wiper transmission.

The contact's mother owns a 1996 chevrolet tahoe. The windshield wipers were not operating normally. They were repaired in 2001. Recall 03v159000component: visibility:windshield wiper/washer is related to the failure. The dealer confirmed that the vin is not related to the recall. The dealer also wrote on the invoice that the windshield wipers are working temporarily and can fail at anytime. The corporate office of gm was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 147956 and current mileage was 148114.updated 01/08/09 the consumer stated the problems started when the vehicle would not start. It was determined the problem was the fuel pump. The headlights were not coming on. The consumer requested that the headlight switch be looked at.the vehicle began to shake and stall and white smoke emitted from the muffler. The check engine light also illuminated. Updated 01/09/09.

I replaced windshieldwiper motor at my own expense/ circuit board did not come with new motor and had to be transfered from old unit. This was covered under a recall nhtsa 98v15001 however it covered vehicles mfg. Up to 5/96 mine was mfg 6/96 yetit has the problem covered in the recall which is to correct an intermittent wiper failure. It's a real treet to be driving down the interstate and have your wipers quit. You can pull over, open the hood, and slap the wiper unit and it will resume working for a while. .

Windsheild wipers work in raining conditions for a certain amount of time and then stop.they will attempt to start back in 5 minutes , and start the same problem all over again.
